[0:00:42 – 0:00:52] Erik: Welcome to Van Vac Road 404, destination not found. [0:00:54 – 0:00:56] Erik: The shores of Burntside Lake. [0:00:57 – 0:00:58] Adam: Beautiful. [0:00:59 – 0:01:04] Erik: I am Eric, of course, as always, joined for the first time in a year? [0:01:06 – 0:01:06] Erik: About a year. [0:01:06 – 0:01:07] Erik: We’re in the field. [0:01:08 – 0:01:11] Erik: Just sitting here outside. [0:01:13 – 0:01:13] Erik: My good friend Adam. [0:01:13 – 0:01:14] Erik: Hello. [0:01:14 – 0:01:17] Adam: Hey, we’re sitting at a nice boat launch here. [0:01:17 – 0:01:21] Adam: This is more of a motorboat launch, apparently. [0:01:22 – 0:01:26] Adam: But it’s a beautiful day here on Burnside Lake. [0:01:26 – 0:01:28] Adam: Got a gentle breeze coming in. [0:01:28 – 0:01:29] Adam: The birds are chirping. [0:01:29 – 0:01:32] Adam: Just smells good out here. [0:01:33 – 0:01:36] Adam: And we’re just sitting here watching people launch and load boats. [0:01:36 – 0:01:37] Adam: It’s been pretty fun. [0:01:38 – 0:01:38] Erik: Yeah, we’ve been… [0:01:40 – 0:01:44] Erik: I’m kind of surprised at the situation here at the Burnside Public Access. [0:01:44 – 0:01:51] Erik: There’s a three-tiered parking system where boats with trailers have… Top, top priority. [0:01:51 – 0:01:52] Erik: Top priority. [0:01:52 – 0:01:54] Erik: There’s four parking spots right next to the lake. [0:01:54 – 0:01:58] Erik: There’s a mid-parking area, which is more trailer parking. [0:01:58 – 0:02:03] Erik: You basically have to park in Ely and hike back to the actual landing. [0:02:04 – 0:02:09] Adam: No, I mean, for single vehicle parking, you literally have to drive a couple miles back up the hill. [0:02:10 – 0:02:12] Adam: And then they said there’s a shuttle, but actually the joke’s on us. [0:02:12 – 0:02:16] Adam: It was one of them little, like, hot dog carts with the pedals that you have to pedal. [0:02:17 – 0:02:18] Adam: You have to pedal yourself. [0:02:19 – 0:02:19] Adam: Self-shuttled. [0:02:20 – 0:02:24] Adam: But it was down here, so I had to walk back down here, get the shuttle, and ride it down the hill. [0:02:25 – 0:02:27] Adam: So we’re all set now, though, Eric. [0:02:28 – 0:02:33] Erik: Yeah, it’s only 4 o’clock in the afternoon, so we got 5, 6 hours of daylight still. [0:02:33 – 0:02:36] Erik: And that’s not even an exaggeration. [0:02:36 – 0:02:37] Adam: Not really, yeah. [0:02:37 – 0:02:40] Adam: We’ve taken our sweet time today on Entry Point Day. [0:02:40 – 0:02:46] Adam: We went to the Gunflint… What is the name of it, actually? [0:02:46 – 0:02:47] Adam: The Gunflint Ranger Station. [0:02:47 – 0:02:48] Adam: There it is. [0:02:49 – 0:02:51] Adam: Superior National Forest, and we were issued a permit. [0:02:51 – 0:02:52] Adam: Got to watch the video. [0:02:53 – 0:02:54] Adam: Enjoyed watching the video. [0:02:55 – 0:02:56] Adam: And taking the quiz… [0:02:56 – 0:02:58] Erik: We did the full-blown quiz. [0:02:58 – 0:03:00] Erik: I’ve never been actually fully quizzed before. [0:03:01 – 0:03:08] Erik: But we have a card now that says we don’t need to watch the video again until next year when they change the rules just ever so slightly. [0:03:08 – 0:03:13] Adam: It is episode 222 of Tumble Home, Eric. [0:03:13 – 0:03:13] Adam: Can you believe that? [0:03:17 – 0:03:19] Erik: I mean, I can, but I can’t. [0:03:19 – 0:03:20] Adam: It’s wild. [0:03:21 – 0:03:25] Adam: And we are coming to you live from Burnside Lake in the field. [0:03:25 – 0:03:27] Adam: And this is episode 222. [0:03:27 – 0:03:32] Adam: The show’s sponsor, we’ve got some Pliny the elders, big guys. [0:03:33 – 0:03:48] Adam: biggins here we got a little note here and we’re probably about to get launched on again so we’re gonna try and read this note and then hit the hit the water we actually we’re doing double trouble summer here too um just because it’s warm it’s beautiful and uh i’m working on my tan [0:03:49 – 0:03:54] Adam: The Pliny the Elders are coming in here from Lieutenant Choppin’ Broccoli. [0:03:54 – 0:03:55] Adam: And I’ve got a letter here. [0:03:55 – 0:03:56] Adam: Eric and Adam. [0:03:57 – 0:03:58] Adam: Actually, it’s E and A. [0:03:59 – 0:04:00] Adam: First time, long time. [0:04:00 – 0:04:03] Adam: Like most folks, the last two years saw a lot of big changes for me. [0:04:07 – 0:04:11] Adam: I’m now out in California, but still Minnesota dreaming. [0:04:11 – 0:04:13] Adam: There isn’t much water to paddle. [0:04:13 – 0:04:15] Adam: However, not everything is a loss. [0:04:15 – 0:04:19] Adam: Since I’m in your neck of the woods, I brought you one of the good things. [0:04:19 – 0:04:21] Adam: Enjoy these, Pliny the Elder. [0:04:21 – 0:04:24] Adam: And keep up the good work, you guys, or my sanity check every Sunday. [0:04:25 – 0:04:27] Adam: Lieutenant Choppin’ Broccoli. [0:04:28 – 0:04:30] Adam: This is from September 2, 2022. [0:04:30 – 0:04:30] Adam: Thank you. [0:04:30 – 0:04:31] Adam: We’re catching up. [0:04:37 – 0:04:39] Erik: I had some Pliny’s when I was out in California. [0:04:39 – 0:04:41] Erik: I was so excited when I saw that these were on the sponsorship board. [0:04:41 – 0:04:55] Adam: Yeah, as soon as we kind of did the math and did a couple of the Double Trouble Summer episodes in the shed, then it was like it’s lining up pretty good for the Pliny’s to be the launch beers, as you will. [0:04:56 – 0:04:57] Erik: Yeah. [0:04:57 – 0:05:01] Adam: It’s the bookend and the mirror image to the Glovebox Warmy at the end. [0:05:01 – 0:05:03] Erik: Yeah. [0:05:04 – 0:05:10] Erik: Yeah, this is another one of those ones where it says, like, drink fresh, do not age, exclamation point. [0:05:10 – 0:05:12] Erik: But September, eh, I think we’re still okay. [0:05:12 – 0:05:13] Erik: We’re within the year. [0:05:13 – 0:05:14] Erik: Yeah, and they’re cold. [0:05:20 – 0:05:21] Adam: This looks like a brand new boat launch. [0:05:21 – 0:05:22] Adam: Anybody know about this? [0:05:23 – 0:05:30] Adam: We both have the distinct feeling sitting here that there is probably a different boat launch that’s for canoeists or something farther to the west. [0:05:31 – 0:05:34] Adam: But there’s nothing on the map, and we’re just… [0:05:35 – 0:05:36] Adam: A lot of motor. [0:05:36 – 0:05:37] Adam: We’re the only paddlers in here. [0:05:38 – 0:05:40] Adam: And these pineys, oh my. [0:05:41 – 0:05:41] Erik: So good. [0:05:41 – 0:05:52] Erik: Yeah, there is a, I mean, there is one of those Forest Service, like, placard maps that shows the whole general area with campsites and portages and launches, and this is the only one listed on the map. [0:05:52 – 0:05:52] Adam: You are here. [0:05:53 – 0:05:59] Erik: Yeah, we’re here, and I don’t think there’s going to be, there’s like a slight, a single percent chance. [0:05:59 – 0:06:06] Erik: I’m sure if we lived in the area and we, like, knew the lay of the land, yeah, there’s probably a little bit of a closer entry point to, like, get closer. [0:06:06 – 0:06:09] Erik: Yeah, you can go in through Chucks 40 down there. [0:06:09 – 0:06:32] Erik: yeah exactly like but we don’t know any chucks over here we’re kind of in the dark yeah we’re out of our element here on the west side here in the glenmore estates yeah whatever you want to call them what was uh wally one calling it uh the sidekick region just totally what it is a little sidecar bonjour sidecar unit yeah over here sitting with my doggles on just just enjoying it it’s [0:06:32 – 0:06:33] Adam: Pretty funny. [0:06:33 – 0:06:37] Adam: I posted a picture of us at the ranger station in Grand Marais before we left. [0:06:37 – 0:06:39] Adam: And then when we got to Ely, there was quite a few comments. [0:06:39 – 0:06:47] Adam: And then we ran into a good friend of the show who had donated the snake bite kits at Zupps. [0:06:47 – 0:06:48] Adam: Just in the field. [0:06:48 – 0:06:49] Adam: Hello. [0:06:49 – 0:06:51] Adam: And the Zupps moved, by the way. [0:06:51 – 0:06:54] Adam: So anybody listening to this may want to update their maps. [0:06:54 – 0:06:56] Adam: But the new Zupps is where the Shopko used to be. [0:06:57 – 0:07:03] Erik: And the old Zups is now a true value for all of your home, lawn, and garden needs. [0:07:04 – 0:07:05] Adam: What a world, Eric. [0:07:06 – 0:07:10] Adam: Yeah, we’ve seen now seven to eight motorboats and not one canoer. [0:07:11 – 0:07:17] Adam: But we just got to do a couple four miles that-a-way to reach the portage into Crab. [0:07:18 – 0:07:19] Adam: But it’s so nice here. [0:07:20 – 0:07:23] Adam: We had one motorboat just came in right before we hit record yesterday. [0:07:24 – 0:07:26] Adam: They’re like, are you guys just finishing your trip? [0:07:26 – 0:07:28] Adam: I’m like, no, we’re just drinking beers and hanging out here. [0:07:28 – 0:07:31] Adam: So it gets a little windy. [0:07:31 – 0:07:32] Adam: Like, we’re not really waiting out the wind at all. [0:07:32 – 0:07:34] Adam: We’re just enjoying ourselves. [0:07:35 – 0:07:37] Erik: Yeah, he made it sound like it was choppy out there. [0:07:37 – 0:07:39] Erik: I mean, I can see the bulk of the lake here. [0:07:39 – 0:07:41] Erik: It’s not looking too bad at all. [0:07:41 – 0:07:44] Erik: It’s kind of a weird, it might be like a weird side wind, but… [0:07:44 – 0:07:50] Adam: Maybe if you have a John boat full of fire repression systems and diesel motors, it’s a little choppy up there. [0:07:50 – 0:07:55] Adam: If you’re in a Min 2 with a four horse, I’m sorry, we have a four and a half horse. [0:07:55 – 0:07:58] Adam: Eric and I each have one horse attached to each shoulder. [0:07:58 – 0:08:05] Adam: And then Gordy with his morals and great attitude up front is generating an extra .5 horse. [0:08:06 – 0:08:09] Adam: So we have a 4.5 horse on this Min 2. [0:08:09 – 0:08:10] Adam: And that’s the legal 4.5. [0:08:11 – 0:08:12] Erik: Yeah, that’s legal. [0:08:12 – 0:08:14] Erik: Nature’s 4.5. [0:08:15 – 0:08:16] Erik: Nature’s 4.5. [0:08:16 – 0:08:18] Erik: Yeah, borderline 4.5. [0:08:18 – 0:08:20] Erik: It’s a borderline 4.5. [0:08:21 – 0:08:24] Erik: We need to get more arms so we can just have a borderline 11. [0:08:25 – 0:08:30] Erik: It’s definitely the warmest I think I’ve felt since I’ve been back in the Northwoods. [0:08:31 – 0:08:31] Erik: Yeah, I’m hot. [0:08:31 – 0:08:32] Erik: The sun is… [0:08:33 – 0:08:38] Erik: It’s not even like the air isn’t too terribly hot, but that sun, it is potent. [0:08:38 – 0:08:45] Adam: Yeah, we’re only bringing one rain fly, but we’re mostly bringing it in case we need shade because there’s almost a 0% chance of rain. [0:08:46 – 0:08:47] Adam: I’m not knocking on anything. [0:08:47 – 0:08:53] Adam: It’s looking pretty good for the forecast here for the next four days, but we might need some shade out there. [0:08:53 – 0:09:00] Adam: It’s quite hot, but I think today is also probably forecast to be the hottest of the days out there, but still, I’m not used to this. [0:09:00 – 0:09:05] Erik: I think it was supposed to cool off as the week went on, and as of right now, [0:09:06 – 0:09:12] Erik: have not seen or heard of anything more than one or two random black flies that kind of came through. [0:09:12 – 0:09:14] Adam: I knew it. [0:09:14 – 0:09:15] Adam: We were both worried. [0:09:15 – 0:09:16] Adam: I’m not going to say Eric was just worried. [0:09:16 – 0:09:19] Adam: We were both a little worried about the bug situation at home. [0:09:19 – 0:09:20] Adam: It’s pretty bad right now. [0:09:20 – 0:09:22] Erik: But let’s remember this. [0:09:23 – 0:09:30] Adam: Burnside Lake and all the snow that was here was gone three weeks before all the ice and snow was gone at our houses. [0:09:31 – 0:09:35] Adam: And so they, in theory, should be like three weeks ahead on the bug cycle, right? [0:09:35 – 0:09:38] Erik: Yeah, I mean, and it is dry, you know. [0:09:38 – 0:09:40] Erik: It’s not like there’s a ton of water hanging around all that much, but… [0:09:41 – 0:10:06] Erik: i don’t know the science behind it you know you’d think you kind of have it figured out and then all of a sudden it’s like well i don’t know the mosquitoes are the worst they’ve ever been and that’s all you saw online any of the message boards any of like other i mean not that i go to any of these places but any of the other like subreddits that talk about the bunch waters all the posts are just like the bugs are the worst on record all the old timers agree it’s insane like my grandma got carried off it’s like what [0:10:06 – 0:10:34] Adam: there she goes bye and now we’re here and it’s like well this is really the first time in a week and a half maybe two weeks where i’ve actually felt a breeze and we’re kind of sitting in the perfect spot here we got a bit of a east northeast five to seven northeast i would say uh not too much but it’s more breeze than i’ve uh felt in a while and even with that coming in here and maybe it’s helping the bugs or whatever but even then it still feels just like real hot [0:10:34 – 0:10:38] Erik: Yeah, it’s hitting hard right now, I can for sure. [0:10:38 – 0:10:40] Erik: There’s a cloud coming in. [0:10:40 – 0:10:41] Erik: That would be appreciated. [0:10:41 – 0:10:48] Erik: A little cloud to keep myself and yourself from getting absolutely zapped here too early. [0:10:49 – 0:10:54] Adam: Neither of us have a sombrero, but I think we’re both wearing new hats for episode 222. [0:10:54 – 0:10:56] Adam: You want to tell me a little bit about your hat? [0:10:57 – 0:11:05] Erik: Well, the main reason I’m wearing this is because Hector chewed my go-to hat that I’ve been wearing for about two months straight. [0:11:05 – 0:11:07] Erik: So just absolutely destroyed. [0:11:07 – 0:11:10] Erik: It wasn’t even one of those things where it’s like, well, I think we could maybe piece this back together. [0:11:10 – 0:11:11] Erik: No, it was just destroyed. [0:11:11 – 0:11:13] Adam: It must have smelled real nice. [0:11:13 – 0:11:14] Erik: I mean, yeah, I guess, maybe. [0:11:14 – 0:11:20] Erik: Just that anxious puppy energy where at 5 in the morning he feels like he needs to chew on something. [0:11:20 – 0:11:22] Erik: So, yeah, I replaced it. [0:11:22 – 0:11:24] Erik: First time ever wearing this hat. [0:11:24 – 0:11:31] Erik: And it’s just a nice black hat, which is probably not the greatest color for a hat right now. [0:11:31 – 0:11:33] Erik: Maybe that’s why my head is feeling so hot. [0:11:33 – 0:11:35] Adam: Well, it’s not just the hat. [0:11:35 – 0:11:36] Adam: It’s definitely hot out here. [0:11:36 – 0:11:44] Adam: I got a new, like, blue and green weird abstract tree hat I acquired in the co-op in Grand Marais. [0:11:45 – 0:11:49] Adam: And they even had one in Packers colors, but I said, I got enough Packers hats. [0:11:49 – 0:11:52] Adam: I want something in real fun summer colors, so that’s what I’m wearing. [0:11:53 – 0:11:59] Adam: And then, of course, Gordy, we took this umbrella off for the drive over on Highway 1, but… [0:12:00 – 0:12:01] Adam: Well, we pulled up here. [0:12:01 – 0:12:03] Adam: There was, like, multiple motorboats. [0:12:04 – 0:12:17] Adam: We took the canoe off the car first and laid it on this nice veranda here, and then I carefully came out and reattached Gordy’s sombrero, and I watched the lady in the pontoon boat just looking at me, just thinking, like, what in the hell is going on here? [0:12:17 – 0:12:19] Erik: Yeah, there was a lot of sideways looks over here. [0:12:20 – 0:12:23] Erik: I feel like there’s a different energy over on the west side. [0:12:23 – 0:12:28] Erik: We were just texting with a friend who lived over here for a little bit, and he’s like, man, I don’t know. [0:12:28 – 0:12:31] Erik: He’s like, no, I don’t live there anymore because we were seeing if he was in town. [0:12:31 – 0:12:34] Erik: And he’s like, yeah, just be careful. [0:12:34 – 0:12:34] Erik: Don’t get in any fights. [0:12:35 – 0:12:42] Erik: I don’t know what it is about Ely, but everybody wants to start fights over there about motors and snowmobiles and what’s a wilderness and where you can go and what you can’t do. [0:12:42 – 0:12:45] Erik: It’s just like, why does everything have to be so contentious? [0:12:45 – 0:12:46] Erik: And it feels like that. [0:12:46 – 0:12:47] Erik: It literally does. [0:12:47 – 0:13:13] Adam: any conversation you’re kind of hearing you can tell it’s like oh that’s a local who like yeah well reason hates the boundary waters it’s like why why it’s a loser’s mentality eric we’re gonna keep positive mental attitude positive mental attitude and thoughts on this trip but gordy’s guys had on and the lady in the pontoon was amused by it and she enjoyed it i’m sure but she wasn’t driving the boat uh she had her boat man going up to grab something i guess and then off they went [0:13:14 – 0:13:40] Adam: boat man she had her little boat boy going we stopped in at the boathouse for lunch we tried to go to the ely steakhouse on a real audible to go but we weren’t going to get bucky burgers we had agreed ahead of time we would not get bucky burgers but we’re like let’s do ely steakhouse before a trip let’s just see how it goes pull up all their neon signs are on we park the car and walk across and the doors are locked one of the most humiliating things that can ever happen to you as a patron of a [0:13:43 – 0:13:44] Adam: So we’re like, I don’t know, what are we going to do? [0:13:44 – 0:13:46] Adam: The boathouse is open, so we went in there. [0:13:46 – 0:13:50] Erik: Yeah, the only place in town really, like, I don’t know, it’s just so weird. [0:13:50 – 0:13:54] Erik: I mean, it’s like this in Grand Marais where you find places that are just closed random days. [0:13:54 – 0:13:55] Erik: Mondays are pretty common. [0:13:55 – 0:14:00] Erik: While we were in there, they were like, we’re the only one open on Mondays, so you’re going to have to be patient with us. [0:14:00 – 0:14:01] Adam: There’s a whole table. [0:14:01 – 0:14:05] Adam: We were guessing, are they coming off a trip, or are they just about to go on a trip like us? [0:14:05 – 0:14:11] Adam: But you could tell they had just come off a trip but hadn’t gotten a shower in, and then they were passing out gift cards, Eric. [0:14:11 – 0:14:14] Adam: to each other for, like, biggest bass, and they had, like, prize categories. [0:14:14 – 0:14:19] Adam: They were announcing it was a little bit of a mini Tumblies award show going on over there at Table 5. [0:14:19 – 0:14:23] Erik: Yeah, somebody got, like, a $25, like, Dunkin’ Donuts gift card. [0:14:23 – 0:14:25] Erik: I’m like, it was a big table. [0:14:25 – 0:14:26] Erik: I think it was eight or nine people. [0:14:26 – 0:14:28] Erik: For best wood gnoming, I thought I heard. [0:14:28 – 0:14:29] Erik: Yeah, I think I heard that, too. [0:14:29 – 0:14:36] Erik: But, like, it’s such a fun… That would be such a fun thing to do with a big group like that is to have, like, awards at the end of the trip. [0:14:36 – 0:14:39] Erik: Everybody gets something, but then you bring it back. [0:14:39 – 0:14:41] Erik: You reminisce about the trip. [0:14:41 – 0:14:48] Erik: It’s still, like, you know, you’re not honestly, like, truly awarding things for any reason that somebody would get, like… [0:14:49 – 0:15:17] Erik: jealous over it’s more in recognition yeah yeah and you could easily find eight reasons to give out gift cards for different things i was like oh that’s kind of a fun idea absolutely we’re gonna have to incorporate that into the boxcar trip of the the big one yeah when we get all the tumble the yeah the unlimited tumble homie trip that we’re uh putting together you stay tuned 2028 2028 that sounds about right that sounds about right i’m gonna i yeah you know usually my intuition on these things is right [0:15:19 – 0:15:20] Adam: But thank you. [0:15:20 – 0:15:22] Adam: What are you going to give these piney, the elders? [0:15:22 – 0:15:25] Adam: We kept them reasonably cold on the drive over. [0:15:25 – 0:15:33] Adam: We had them in the little soft-sided cooler, which is packed now full of meat and delicious treasures from the zups. [0:15:34 – 0:15:36] Adam: But we had the beers in there on the drive over. [0:15:36 – 0:15:39] Adam: These are pretty good and cold, and you’ve got to love it. [0:15:39 – 0:15:42] Erik: I can’t wait to get to some of our purchases out in the field. [0:15:43 – 0:15:44] Erik: Obviously, we just… [0:15:45 – 0:15:52] Erik: For no reason other than we were kind of hungry, decided to reward ourselves for doing no work. [0:15:52 – 0:15:59] Erik: It feels backwards to start a trip by going out to eat and getting cold beers, but that’s just the kind of trip this is going to be, I think. [0:15:59 – 0:16:03] Adam: I believe it, and, you know, it was fun, and we had to eat something, you know. [0:16:03 – 0:16:05] Adam: It was just kind of the timing worked out perfectly. [0:16:05 – 0:16:06] Adam: Like, let’s go get lunch. [0:16:07 – 0:16:07] Erik: Yeah. [0:16:07 – 0:16:08] Erik: No, but we’ve got some fun things. [0:16:09 – 0:16:11] Erik: We have the THC gravy. [0:16:11 – 0:16:12] Erik: We have cheese curds. [0:16:12 – 0:16:13] Erik: We have fries. [0:16:13 – 0:16:24] Erik: We have the wok, which I tried seasoning at home on the grill outside, but it wasn’t getting hot enough, and I didn’t really feel like filling my house with… [0:16:25 – 0:16:25] Erik: smoking oil. [0:16:26 – 0:16:30] Erik: So we’re going to be seasoning it on the fly in camp tonight, hopefully. [0:16:31 – 0:16:31] Erik: Oh my. [0:16:31 – 0:16:34] Erik: I have a screenshot of instructions from friend of the show. [0:16:36 – 0:16:36] Erik: You know who you are. [0:16:37 – 0:16:43] Erik: He was also giving feedback on the dog wound bite. [0:16:44 – 0:16:45] Erik: Dog wound bite. [0:16:45 – 0:16:46] Erik: That’s what it is. [0:16:46 – 0:16:47] Erik: Dog brain man. [0:16:47 – 0:16:48] Erik: Man brain dog. [0:16:48 – 0:16:48] Erik: Remember that? [0:16:49 – 0:16:49] Adam: I do. [0:16:50 – 0:16:57] Erik: He was like, yeah, just make sure you get, he’s like, you got to kind of massage that scar tissue flesh around the wound so it doesn’t get tight and hard packed. [0:16:57 – 0:17:01] Erik: And then once it heals, it’ll like, it’ll heal better. [0:17:01 – 0:17:05] Erik: And then his, the best bit of advice was keep it loose and keep it clean. [0:17:06 – 0:17:08] Erik: Keep it loose and keep it clean. [0:17:08 – 0:17:11] Adam: I’m giving this piney, the elder, 88 out of 100. [0:17:11 – 0:17:20] Erik: Yeah, you did ask me what the rating I was going to give it, and I essentially went and said five different things that had nothing to do with the rating. [0:17:20 – 0:17:24] Erik: I’m going to go ahead and give it, I don’t know, 73 out of 100 degrees. [0:17:29 – 0:17:30] Adam: Yeah, it feels like it’s 100. [0:17:30 – 0:17:32] Adam: It’s probably 73, though, really. [0:17:32 – 0:17:33] Erik: Yeah. [0:17:33 – 0:17:33] Erik: In the sun? [0:17:33 – 0:17:34] Erik: Yeah. [0:17:34 – 0:17:35] Erik: For sure in the 80s. [0:17:36 – 0:17:37] Erik: We’re in the cloud right now? [0:17:37 – 0:17:37] Erik: It’s in the 70s. [0:17:37 – 0:17:42] Adam: It’s mostly cloudy, a little hazy, and I don’t think it’s smoke haze either. [0:17:42 – 0:17:46] Adam: We did check the weather before we left, and I think it was just the humidity. [0:17:46 – 0:17:53] Erik: Yeah, no, this morning’s drive down the shore was foggy almost, to that point where you’re thinking, is this… [0:17:54 – 0:18:20] Erik: smoke from somewhere and i did see some air quality warnings for like northwestern wisconsin but i think it was just fog just thick air which makes you think it feels like a storm could like pop up at any point like it could just crop up with the kind of feeling in the air but it’s like 10 to 20 chance of rain at this point and then none for the rest of the week yeah what’s the dew point doing thick dew point [0:18:20 – 0:18:21] Adam: I don’t like it. [0:18:21 – 0:18:22] Adam: I don’t like it. [0:18:22 – 0:18:32] Adam: Well, we’re in double trouble summer in this thing, I think, and get two in here because we got them with us, and they’re glass bottles, so we can’t bring them with. [0:18:32 – 0:18:35] Adam: So we’re having a bit of a party now that we’re done driving the vehicle around. [0:18:36 – 0:18:54] Adam: and about to get into the boat we did go down to paragas and maybe we’ll get into that a little bit but uh we are still drinking the pineys but we also have a wonderful set of show sponsors it was labeled as um delicious mystery box number six from great friend of the show ghost of n abbey [0:18:55 – 0:19:04] Adam: It was the Oak Barrel Sampler 4-Pack Mystery 6, or something to that effect is how it was labeled. [0:19:05 – 0:19:06] Adam: I’m just going to list them off here. [0:19:07 – 0:19:11] Erik: It’s a disturbing amount of alcohol in some of these. [0:19:11 – 0:19:17] Adam: Boulevard Brewing from Kansas City, which Eric and I have been to Boulevard way back in the day. [0:19:18 – 0:19:22] Adam: We got a bourbon-barreled quad barrel-aged ale. [0:19:24 – 0:19:24] Adam: It’s quite strong. [0:19:25 – 0:19:27] Erik: At what point can you not call it here? [0:19:27 – 0:19:28] Erik: I feel like it’s right on the edge because that’s 12.2%. [0:19:30 – 0:19:36] Adam: Yeah, I’m currently brewing some pears up at home, and I don’t know whether or not they’re a pear wine or a pear cider. [0:19:37 – 0:19:39] Adam: It’s the where is the line there. [0:19:40 – 0:19:42] Adam: And then, again, where’s the line with beer? [0:19:43 – 0:19:46] Adam: Also a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot barley wine. [0:19:46 – 0:19:54] Adam: We’ve had one of these on the show, but this is a new version of the label with a silly old man with a donkey cart. [0:19:54 – 0:19:54] Adam: Very funny. [0:19:55 – 0:20:01] Adam: We have a Founders Backwoods Bastard Ale Aged in Oak Bourbon Barrels. [0:20:03 – 0:20:03] Adam: And? [0:20:03 – 0:20:03] Adam: Two Founders. [0:20:04 – 0:20:05] Adam: Another Founders. [0:20:05 – 0:20:12] Adam: This is the Comerigin Old Ale Brewed with the Molasses and the Oak Aged. [0:20:14 – 0:20:17] Adam: That was real sea shantied. [0:20:18 – 0:20:20] Erik: It’s got your Ken Burns font on this one, too. [0:20:20 – 0:20:31] Erik: What is it about, like, oak-aged, stout, deep, dark, syrupy, heavy beers where it’s like, yeah, we’ve got to go with the Ken Burns font? [0:20:31 – 0:20:32] Adam: That’s just the way it is. [0:20:32 – 0:20:34] Adam: It goes perfect with the violin. [0:20:34 – 0:20:38] Adam: And what’s the difference between the Ken Burns font and the font in the Simple Plan? [0:20:38 – 0:20:41] Adam: A Simple Plan. [0:20:42 – 0:20:51] Erik: Yeah, that was the first comment I sent to you when I was watching that movie, is I said the font for the credits for A Simple Plan are an affront to humanity. [0:20:51 – 0:21:01] Adam: Yeah, you could sub in Ashokan Farewell or just the Fargo soundtrack entirely into that font, and the aesthetic would range perfectly. [0:21:01 – 0:21:02] Erik: No, I hated it. [0:21:02 – 0:21:04] Erik: I hated that font so much. [0:21:05 – 0:21:08] Erik: It was like kitschy Comic Sans. [0:21:08 – 0:21:09] Erik: It did not fit. [0:21:09 – 0:21:11] Erik: It was damn near Comic Sans. [0:21:11 – 0:21:12] Erik: This is Avatar. [0:21:12 – 0:21:13] Erik: It did not. [0:21:13 – 0:21:14] Erik: Papyrus. [0:21:14 – 0:21:15] Adam: It’s Papyrus. [0:21:16 – 0:21:18] Adam: It’s always been Papyrus on Burnside. [0:21:18 – 0:21:20] Adam: They’re making a sequel? [0:21:20 – 0:21:20] Erik: What do you mean? [0:21:22 – 0:21:23] Erik: Yeah, no, I don’t know. [0:21:23 – 0:21:25] Erik: It didn’t fit the vibe of that movie at all. [0:21:25 – 0:21:26] Erik: We’ll talk about A Simple Plan. [0:21:26 – 0:21:28] Erik: We’re going to talk about Cast Away. [0:21:29 – 0:21:31] Erik: Stayed up till one in the morning watching Castaway last night. [0:21:32 – 0:21:32] Erik: I feel great. [0:21:33 – 0:21:33] Erik: Yeah, I did too. [0:21:34 – 0:21:34] Erik: It was crazy. [0:21:34 – 0:21:37] Erik: I was like, oh, damn, two and a half hours long. [0:21:37 – 0:21:38] Erik: All right. [0:21:39 – 0:21:40] Erik: Chipmunk just came out of the culvert. [0:21:40 – 0:21:41] Erik: Culvert chipmunk. [0:21:41 – 0:21:42] UNKNOWN: Hey, buddy. [0:21:43 – 0:21:44] Adam: You want to come with? [0:21:44 – 0:21:45] Erik: First wildlife sighting. [0:21:46 – 0:21:48] Erik: We’ll get you a Glock and a sombrero. [0:21:49 – 0:21:51] Adam: All the chipmunks get a Glock? [0:21:51 – 0:21:52] Adam: Oh, they all share one, actually. [0:21:52 – 0:21:54] Erik: Do you think you can get one down that small? [0:21:54 – 0:21:58] Erik: Did you see any other variations on sizes when you purchased Cordy’s? [0:21:59 – 0:22:01] Adam: Yeah, they have one at Paragus. [0:22:01 – 0:22:01] Adam: Chipmunk size? [0:22:01 – 0:22:02] Adam: Absolutely, yeah. [0:22:02 – 0:22:05] Adam: It’s back in the back right corner by the bug nets. [0:22:05 – 0:22:09] Adam: There’s a Coghlan’s bug net back there, too, if anybody’s needing some protection. [0:22:10 – 0:22:17] Erik: Yeah, we thought we may find like a perfect bug net tent shelter scenario. [0:22:18 – 0:22:24] Erik: I’m feeling a lot better that we didn’t find anything because these bugs out here right now are non-existent. [0:22:24 – 0:22:25] Erik: We’ll find out. [0:22:25 – 0:22:28] Erik: Obviously, we’re sitting in like 50% water, 50% asphalt. [0:22:29 – 0:22:31] Erik: Yeah, it’s primo wind. [0:22:31 – 0:22:32] Adam: Primo wind conditions here. [0:22:32 – 0:22:35] Adam: So we’ve got to find a campsite that’s oriented the same way here. [0:22:36 – 0:22:38] Adam: We’ve got to find something that’s oriented properly. [0:22:38 – 0:22:41] Adam: Like the sauce we’re going to put on our dinner on night two. [0:22:41 – 0:22:42] Erik: Dinner sauce. [0:22:43 – 0:22:47] Erik: But I was thinking, oh, maybe we should just pick up like a little bug house thing. [0:22:47 – 0:22:48] Erik: Didn’t find anything. [0:22:49 – 0:22:51] Erik: And I think we just bought a map. [0:22:51 – 0:22:53] Erik: We just bought the F9 map. [0:22:54 – 0:22:58] Adam: F9 Fisher, and that’s where we’re going to start the trip here on Burntside Lake. [0:22:59 – 0:23:00] Adam: Pretty excited. [0:23:00 – 0:23:09] Adam: If we end up pushing off of F9, we do have the Westside Nat Geos to assist us, and it should be reasonable to do that, but it’s always nice to have that Fisher. [0:23:09 – 0:23:17] Adam: Eric prefers to navigate, and it sounds like your hand is feeling up for the challenge, at least of going across Burntside here for these four miles. [0:23:18 – 0:23:19] Erik: Yeah, I’m going to start in the back. [0:23:19 – 0:23:20] Erik: We’ll see how it goes. [0:23:20 – 0:23:23] Erik: I’m honestly more worried about the 400 rod portage. [0:23:23 – 0:23:31] Erik: It looked like a pretty easy walk in, but you know, 400 rods is still 400 rods, no matter what the portage is like. [0:23:33 – 0:23:36] Erik: Getting that sweet, sweet dock audio. [0:23:36 – 0:23:39] Adam: Yeah, that’s what it’s all about. [0:23:40 – 0:23:50] Adam: Yeah, first time ever on Burnside Lake, and really the first time ever I had taken Highway 1 west out of Ely. [0:23:50 – 0:23:50] Erik: 169. [0:23:51 – 0:23:52] Adam: And 169. [0:23:52 – 0:23:53] Adam: Yeah. [0:23:53 – 0:23:58] Adam: Pretty sweet out here, and I can’t wait to see what happens out on Crab Lake tonight. [0:23:58 – 0:24:01] Erik: Yeah, we’re basically in North Dakota at this point, so far west. [0:24:02 – 0:24:10] Adam: All right, well, thank you to the show sponsors for the Plineys and the Founders and the Boulevard and, of course, the barley wine. [0:24:11 – 0:24:12] Adam: We all love the barley wine. [0:24:14 – 0:24:18] Adam: Shout-out to all the motor boaters we ran into very friendly here at Burnside Lake. [0:24:18 – 0:24:23] Adam: And shout-out to Gordy for kicking in that extra .5 on the horses. [0:24:24 – 0:24:28] Adam: But we’re going to finish these up, I think, and probably get this boat in the water. [0:24:29 – 0:24:32] Adam: We’ve got to get out there at some point and find what we forgot. [0:24:32 – 0:24:34] Erik: I mean, that’s why we’re here. [0:24:34 – 0:24:35] Adam: Exactly. [0:24:35 – 0:24:35] Adam: All right. [0:24:35 – 0:24:39] Adam: We will see you out on crab, I assume, tonight. [0:24:40 – 0:24:47] Adam: But as always, we will go with the flow, and we’ll catch you at the next trek. [0:24:47 – 0:24:49] Adam: Until then, from Tumble Home, my name is Adam. [0:24:50 – 0:24:51] Adam: Gordy and Eric is here. [0:24:51 – 0:24:53] Erik: Are you going swimming on this trip, you think? [0:24:53 – 0:24:55] Adam: Probably, almost certainly. [0:24:55 – 0:24:56] Erik: All right. [0:24:56 – 0:24:57] Erik: That makes two of us. [0:24:57 – 0:24:57] Erik: All right. [0:24:58 – 0:24:59] Adam: Adios, friends. [0:25:00 – 0:25:01] Adam: Thanks for listening. [0:25:25 – 0:25:26] Erik: Rangoons. [0:25:28 – 0:25:29] Erik: On crab. [0:25:30 – 0:25:32] Erik: Supposedly there’s crab meat in them. [0:25:33 – 0:25:34] Erik: We’re going to find out. [0:25:34 – 0:25:37] Erik: Oh yeah. [0:25:37 – 0:25:39] Erik: I dug deep for that ingredient list. [0:25:40 – 0:25:41] Erik: We made it to crab. [0:25:42 – 0:25:47] Erik: We’re not going to tell you where exactly we are because there might be a Chaney in the chamber. [0:25:51 – 0:25:52] Adam: The ultimate crabs. [0:25:52 – 0:25:53] Adam: Mr. Crabs himself. [0:25:54 – 0:25:57] Erik: Mr. Krabs himself, he’s with us. [0:25:58 – 0:26:00] Adam: He is with us right now, we can’t lie. [0:26:01 – 0:26:02] Adam: He’s still with us right now. [0:26:02 – 0:26:06] Erik: Maybe he’s here, maybe he’s not. [0:26:07 – 0:26:10] Erik: You’re just going to have to come out here and find out for yourself. [0:26:12 – 0:26:19] Erik: We just scorched a bunch of Pagoda brand crab rangoons. [0:26:20 – 0:26:23] Erik: Adam’s not comfortable with the pronunciation. [0:26:23 – 0:26:24] Adam: I don’t know how to say it. [0:26:25 – 0:26:26] Erik: I think I just nailed it. [0:26:26 – 0:26:26] Erik: Rangoons. [0:26:27 – 0:26:27] Erik: Rangoon. [0:26:27 – 0:26:27] Erik: Rangoons. [0:26:29 – 0:26:29] Adam: Crab. [0:26:31 – 0:26:31] Adam: Crab. [0:26:33 – 0:26:34] Adam: All this sauce. [0:26:34 – 0:26:35] Adam: Do you want any sauce? [0:26:35 – 0:26:36] Erik: Sure. [0:26:37 – 0:26:38] Adam: Look at all this sauce going. [0:26:41 – 0:26:46] Erik: Yeah, it’s a real night of treats so far. [0:26:46 – 0:26:47] Erik: Culinary delights. [0:26:50 – 0:26:53] Erik: Yeah, we bobbed and weaved our way across Burnside. [0:26:53 – 0:27:00] Erik: We almost got clipped by Vic and his boat filled with giddy teens. [0:27:01 – 0:27:05] Erik: Jet skiing and water skiing on the way in. [0:27:08 – 0:27:11] Adam: That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a water skier in a canoe. [0:27:12 – 0:27:13] Adam: Burnside today. [0:27:13 – 0:27:14] Erik: That was wild. [0:27:15 – 0:27:17] Erik: I was like, it’s June 5th. [0:27:18 – 0:27:18] Erik: I swear. [0:27:18 – 0:27:19] Erik: There you go. [0:27:19 – 0:27:21] Erik: I’m sure everybody loves the eating on Mike. [0:27:21 – 0:27:22] Adam: Sauce. [0:27:23 – 0:27:23] Adam: It’s the sauce. [0:27:24 – 0:27:24] Erik: Yeah, you’re getting it. [0:27:26 – 0:27:30] Erik: I feel like the Gunflint side, it would be insane to see somebody water skiing right now. [0:27:31 – 0:27:33] Erik: It’s cold over there still. [0:27:34 – 0:27:35] Erik: But it’s over here, apparently. [0:27:36 – 0:27:37] Erik: The water’s nice here. [0:27:37 – 0:27:39] Erik: It’s full-blown summertime vacation. [0:27:39 – 0:27:41] Adam: Yeah, I was in up to my waist today. [0:27:41 – 0:27:41] Adam: It’s beautiful. [0:27:43 – 0:27:43] Erik: Yeah. [0:27:47 – 0:27:49] Erik: The years have taken their toll on us. [0:27:50 – 0:28:04] Erik: The portage, even the paddle on the way in, and definitely the portage, had us questioning our desires as to whether or not we really want to be out here anymore. [0:28:04 – 0:28:09] Adam: Yeah, I was wondering on the portage for sure, like, am I fit enough for this, Eric? [0:28:10 – 0:28:12] Adam: Is my fitness in check? [0:28:12 – 0:28:15] Adam: I was seriously thinking it wasn’t, but we made it. [0:28:15 – 0:28:16] Adam: We did make it through. [0:28:17 – 0:28:17] Adam: Yeah. [0:28:18 – 0:28:18] Erik: Yeah, we did. [0:28:18 – 0:28:18] Erik: We made it. [0:28:19 – 0:28:19] Erik: We barely made it. [0:28:19 – 0:28:22] Erik: We got into camp at about 8 p.m. [0:28:22 – 0:28:29] Adam: It was 8 p.m. We did eventually check, and it was like 8.12, like, after we’d been in here for a bit. [0:28:29 – 0:28:30] Adam: So, 8-ish. [0:28:30 – 0:28:32] Erik: Now, there isn’t any… Ooh. [0:28:32 – 0:28:34] Erik: Did you guys hear that bat? [0:28:38 – 0:28:39] Erik: Bat audio. [0:28:40 – 0:28:41] Erik: First time… [0:28:41 – 0:28:42] Erik: I’m sure I picked it up. [0:28:42 – 0:28:44] Erik: First time on Tumble Home. [0:28:44 – 0:28:45] Erik: Bat audio. [0:28:46 – 0:28:49] Erik: Now, there’s nothing about this trip that feels… [0:28:52 – 0:28:53] Erik: Excuse me. [0:28:53 – 0:28:54] Erik: Like, it feels real. [0:28:55 – 0:28:56] Erik: You know what I mean? [0:28:56 – 0:28:59] Erik: Like, it just is like a, I don’t know what it is. [0:28:59 – 0:29:03] Erik: Like, we paddled next to water skiers. [0:29:03 – 0:29:06] Erik: You were waist deep in a beaver dam. [0:29:07 – 0:29:13] Erik: I texted my wife from camp because there’s cell phone service here. [0:29:13 – 0:29:14] Erik: Like, what is going on? [0:29:14 – 0:29:15] Adam: Yeah, but my phone doesn’t work. [0:29:17 – 0:29:21] Adam: So if you’re in the Crab Rangoon section, you don’t want to have Verizon. [0:29:21 – 0:29:22] Adam: Let me tell you, it doesn’t work. [0:29:24 – 0:29:27] Erik: Yeah, I guess if you’re coming to Crab, you want to text your family. [0:29:28 – 0:29:30] Erik: Make sure you got T-Mobile. [0:29:30 – 0:29:32] Erik: It’s a big shout out for T-Mobile. [0:29:32 – 0:29:33] Erik: The purple company. [0:29:33 – 0:29:34] Adam: Give us a call, T-Mobile. [0:29:38 – 0:29:39] Adam: This is pretty good, actually. [0:29:39 – 0:29:40] Adam: The wok did a good job. [0:29:41 – 0:29:43] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know if we talked enough at the landing. [0:29:44 – 0:29:46] Erik: We were a little out of sorts at the landing, to be honest. [0:29:46 – 0:29:53] Erik: If it didn’t come through on the mic, I feel like I was just, like, not feeling 100%. [0:29:53 – 0:30:01] Erik: And I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that that Zub’s trip was just a wild ride of, like, [0:30:03 – 0:30:12] Erik: I don’t know, just grocery shopping for, like, such a serious purpose like that is kind of, like, anxiety producing and, like, you’ve got your list. [0:30:13 – 0:30:14] Adam: I hear you, bud. [0:30:14 – 0:30:15] Adam: You’ve got a big list, too. [0:30:15 – 0:30:16] Adam: Yeah. [0:30:16 – 0:30:17] Adam: That list was serious. [0:30:18 – 0:30:19] Erik: We nailed it, though. [0:30:19 – 0:30:20] Erik: I think we knocked it out. [0:30:20 – 0:30:20] Erik: We’ll see. [0:30:20 – 0:30:22] Erik: Obviously, we’re going to find out. [0:30:22 – 0:30:23] Erik: But, like, so far, so good. [0:30:23 – 0:30:24] Erik: But they were, like… [0:30:26 – 0:30:33] Erik: Yeah, there were multiple other people in there clearly planning food menus for their trip as well. [0:30:33 – 0:30:35] Adam: Yeah, they didn’t have lists either. [0:30:35 – 0:30:38] Adam: They were just winging it, which makes me very nervous. [0:30:38 – 0:30:38] Erik: Yeah. [0:30:39 – 0:30:40] Erik: We got in, we got out. [0:30:40 – 0:30:44] Erik: The freezer section is always the most fun part of the grocery store. [0:30:44 – 0:30:44] Erik: I don’t know. [0:30:46 – 0:30:49] Erik: You never know what you’re going to find out there in the freezer section. [0:30:49 – 0:30:53] Erik: Freezer section, it’s just a wonderland, a parade wonderland. [0:30:53 – 0:30:55] Erik: You never know what’s coming around the next turn. [0:30:55 – 0:30:56] Erik: What’s the next float going to be? [0:30:58 – 0:31:00] Erik: We got a screaming deal on shrimp. [0:31:00 – 0:31:01] Erik: We did. [0:31:01 – 0:31:03] Erik: We got some salad-sized shrimp. [0:31:04 – 0:31:06] Adam: Normally $14.99. [0:31:06 – 0:31:10] Adam: We got this huge sack of shrimp for $7.99. [0:31:10 – 0:31:11] Adam: What a steal. [0:31:11 – 0:31:11] Erik: Screaming deal. [0:31:12 – 0:31:15] Erik: The most expensive thing we bought was that half log of salami. [0:31:16 – 0:31:19] Erik: And then second was Jarlsberg. [0:31:20 – 0:31:26] Erik: Coming in at $11 for a decent-sized wedge, but not that big. [0:31:27 – 0:31:28] Adam: That’s the way it goes. [0:31:28 – 0:31:29] Erik: Yeah, there’s no… [0:31:29 – 0:31:35] Adam: I’ve seen like three to four dairies just completely, not go out of business, just disappear. [0:31:36 – 0:31:37] Adam: Like, hey, what happened to them? [0:31:37 – 0:31:39] Adam: They’re like, well, they don’t make cheese no more. [0:31:40 – 0:31:40] Erik: Oh, that’s what, okay. [0:31:41 – 0:31:44] Adam: And they’re like, well, that’s why cheese costs that much. [0:31:44 – 0:31:50] Adam: Not easy to keep it going like Jarlsberg has for… A thousand years or whatever? [0:31:50 – 0:31:51] Adam: At least a thousand. [0:31:51 – 0:31:51] Adam: Right. [0:31:53 – 0:32:01] Erik: Yeah, so I think just the whole day has kind of had this weird, not in a bad way necessarily, feel to it. [0:32:02 – 0:32:11] Erik: It’s just been kind of like, you know, you do something so rarely like this and it really cuts into the overall, like… [0:32:12 – 0:32:36] Erik: feeling of your life that you’re like well i’m so used to going on these banjo water strips it’s gonna be fine we’re just gonna go and do what we do but like it’s still kind of like snuck up on us and then all of a sudden like i woke up this morning and it was just like we’re going oh it’s happening today this is we got to do this and like we haven’t at that time done nearly enough planning for like what we’re gonna do but at the same time i was like [0:32:37 – 0:32:39] Erik: I think we know what we’re doing. [0:32:39 – 0:32:43] Erik: And we basically just, like, kind of, like, menu planned on the ride over. [0:32:44 – 0:32:45] Adam: And… Yeah, while driving. [0:32:45 – 0:32:46] Adam: No problem with that. [0:32:47 – 0:32:48] Erik: Yeah, while driving. [0:32:49 – 0:32:50] Erik: And so far, so good. [0:32:51 – 0:32:51] Erik: We’ll see. [0:32:51 – 0:32:53] Adam: We’re having crab rangoon on crab. [0:32:53 – 0:32:54] Adam: Yeah. [0:32:54 – 0:32:54] Adam: Crabs on crabs. [0:32:55 – 0:32:56] Erik: Crabs on crab. [0:32:56 – 0:32:56] Erik: We were… [0:32:56 – 0:32:56] Erik: Pretty good. [0:32:57 – 0:32:57] Erik: Yeah, they’re all right. [0:32:57 – 0:32:59] Erik: We were hoping for crab cakes. [0:33:00 – 0:33:02] Erik: Apparently, you can’t find those in the Northland. [0:33:02 – 0:33:03] Adam: We could have made our own. [0:33:03 – 0:33:04] Adam: We could have. [0:33:04 – 0:33:04] Adam: We had crab. [0:33:05 – 0:33:05] Adam: Yeah. [0:33:05 – 0:33:06] Adam: You know, they had… [0:33:06 – 0:33:08] Adam: minced crab meat in a pouch or whatever. [0:33:09 – 0:33:09] Erik: Pouch of meat? [0:33:10 – 0:33:11] Adam: Nothing wrong with that either. [0:33:12 – 0:33:16] Adam: Yeah, it’s the old mystery of new water. [0:33:16 – 0:33:23] Adam: You think you know what you’re going to do, and then you head to new water, and you’re like, what the heck is all this all about? [0:33:24 – 0:33:26] Adam: It takes three hours longer than you thought. [0:33:27 – 0:33:30] Adam: But ultimately, you pull into the campsite, you’re like, this is what we’re talking about. [0:33:31 – 0:33:31] Erik: Yeah. [0:33:31 – 0:33:33] Erik: Yeah, that was the thinking I had. [0:33:33 – 0:33:36] Erik: Like, the whole day today, I was like, we got on the water. [0:33:36 – 0:33:42] Adam: I was, like, thinking, I had intrusive thoughts about, like, we should just turn this thing around. [0:33:42 – 0:33:44] Adam: This portage is junk. [0:33:44 – 0:33:46] Adam: Like, it took us way too long to find it. [0:33:46 – 0:33:47] Adam: What are we doing out here? [0:33:48 – 0:33:50] Adam: But also, it’s a beautiful day, you know? [0:33:50 – 0:33:54] Adam: And then you fight through that little mini urge you have in the middle of… [0:33:54 – 0:33:57] Adam: It’s a bit of a portage tantrum you might have. [0:33:58 – 0:34:03] Adam: And then you get to the beach landing here on Crab, and you’re like, okay, all right, we’re here. [0:34:04 – 0:34:04] Adam: It’s fine. [0:34:04 – 0:34:05] Adam: We’re going to make it. [0:34:06 – 0:34:08] Adam: Everybody has these thoughts, I think, on a portage. [0:34:08 – 0:34:08] Erik: I think so. [0:34:08 – 0:34:12] Erik: And then you come around the corner, and you find a nice spot, and it’s like, well, that looks nice. [0:34:13 – 0:34:16] Erik: And then you get your hammock set up, and you’re like, well, that’s really nice. [0:34:16 – 0:34:17] Erik: I cannot wait to get in that thing. [0:34:18 – 0:34:20] Erik: And then the bugs kind of… [0:34:20 – 0:34:23] Erik: Honestly, we were saying at the landing… [0:34:24 – 0:34:27] Erik: when we last left you, how the bugs were like basically non-existent. [0:34:28 – 0:34:31] Erik: I think it was just because it was like kind of a breezy shoreline or whatever. [0:34:31 – 0:34:32] Erik: It wasn’t, it wasn’t fine. [0:34:32 – 0:34:33] Erik: It was great. [0:34:33 – 0:34:38] Erik: And then we got to the portage and it was mildly heinous. [0:34:40 – 0:35:04] Erik: uh like kind of insane at moments but it was like intermittent you know you put your head net on and i just like fully went like wet dripping deet skin and we we got through it and any kind of a any 420 rod portage regardless is going to be is you’re going to end up hating it at some point you’re going to hate it you know you gotta hate a portage like that to love it [0:35:05 – 0:35:27] Adam: you know yeah and it wasn’t really that bad for 420 rods like it’s basically two portages with a beaver pond in the middle yeah we ran you should just get in the canoe for don’t even try no matter what the old ghost says on the trail it’s deep but you can make it i’m like thanks old ghost and you can’t you know i almost flipped over like a turtle in the stream [0:35:27 – 0:35:35] Erik: Yeah, Adam had a near-death experience where he tried fording the Beaver Creek River and finding his way, and… [0:35:35 – 0:35:39] Adam: The food pack, I wasn’t near death, and the food pack was only 180 pounds minimum. [0:35:39 – 0:35:45] Erik: The food pack is, I mean, obviously, people out there, you know, we’ve been on some trips. [0:35:46 – 0:35:47] Erik: We know what heavy packs feel like. [0:35:47 – 0:35:50] Erik: It’s a wine pack with some food on top. [0:35:50 – 0:35:53] Erik: Somehow, somehow we’ve managed to create… [0:35:54 – 0:36:00] Erik: Yet again, one of the most concentrated, like a dying sun weight food packs. [0:36:01 – 0:36:02] Erik: It’s insane. [0:36:02 – 0:36:08] Erik: Like, I don’t know if maybe it’s because we’re just weaker and older, but like this thing is absurd. [0:36:08 – 0:36:14] Adam: Like we need to like spend some time, you know, but then I was trying to get across that pond and everything was going all right. [0:36:14 – 0:36:17] Adam: But then I got to a deep spot, you know, and it was still all right. [0:36:17 – 0:36:19] Adam: But then I just stepped in a hole of like, [0:36:19 – 0:36:27] Adam: cold and mysterious water and I almost went in you know I don’t know I honestly don’t know how I was able to like pull my leg back and get my footing again [0:36:28 – 0:36:31] Adam: And then I said, well, you know, I’m going to turn back here and wait for the boat. [0:36:32 – 0:36:33] Adam: I was shocked. [0:36:33 – 0:36:34] Adam: Let’s be smart here, you know. [0:36:35 – 0:36:39] Erik: I was shocked because we were like, let’s just do like the hopscotch one and a half style. [0:36:39 – 0:36:43] Erik: I’ll take the pack to where we think is about halfway, and then I’ll go back for the canoe. [0:36:43 – 0:36:44] Erik: You continue on. [0:36:44 – 0:36:49] Erik: And when I came back to about the spot that we had left stuff, you were just like kind of standing there. [0:36:50 – 0:36:56] Erik: And this is after we, like you said, had ran into the mysterious portage ghost who was like, the water gets deep. [0:36:56 – 0:36:57] Adam: Watch and beware. [0:36:57 – 0:36:58] Erik: Beware. [0:36:58 – 0:37:02] Erik: And I was like, oh, well, how bad can this beaver dam really be? [0:37:03 – 0:37:08] Erik: And then when I kept walking with the canoe up to where this beaver dam had flooded, it was… [0:37:09 – 0:37:09] Erik: It’s a full… [0:37:09 – 0:37:10] Erik: It looks like… [0:37:11 – 0:37:11] Erik: It’s like a lake. [0:37:11 – 0:37:12] Erik: It’s a portage landing. [0:37:13 – 0:37:13] Erik: Yeah. [0:37:13 – 0:37:15] Erik: And you were like, yeah, I made it over that log. [0:37:15 – 0:37:17] Erik: I was like, you walked all the way through that? [0:37:18 – 0:37:18] Erik: This is like… [0:37:19 – 0:37:46] Adam: three feet of water i was shocked i was like it was past my knees right away and then yeah eventually i was soaked all the way up to my um up to my waist for sure yeah i luckily i was carrying the bag of wine in the satchel from good friend of the show tree craft luckily luckily i was able to like i had my wits about me enough to like keep that above the water level at least but i somehow did nearly a backflip while wearing the food pack to like avoid falling completely in [0:37:47 – 0:37:51] Erik: And then I just retreated to the shoreline and waited for Eric, which was the smart play. [0:37:51 – 0:37:55] Erik: And it ended up, I feel like, being maybe just a little over halfway. [0:37:55 – 0:37:56] Adam: Yeah. [0:37:56 – 0:37:58] Erik: The river, essentially, it’s a river. [0:37:58 – 0:38:03] Erik: It’s not flowing or anything, but it’s full-blown waist-deep water. [0:38:03 – 0:38:10] Erik: It sounds like full-blown deep pits, and it’s not on the map at all. [0:38:10 – 0:38:11] Adam: It’s not a 410. [0:38:11 – 0:38:13] Adam: It’s two 220s, basically, with a beaver pond in the middle. [0:38:14 – 0:38:16] Erik: You have to get in the canoe and literally paddle. [0:38:17 – 0:38:17] Erik: What have we got? [0:38:18 – 0:38:19] Adam: It’s probably Mars. [0:38:20 – 0:38:20] Erik: Oh, nice. [0:38:20 – 0:38:23] Adam: Clouds are starting to clear out here, and it is dark. [0:38:23 – 0:38:27] Adam: This is Tumulam after dark now, and we’ve got our first, like, planetoid sighting over here. [0:38:27 – 0:38:32] Adam: I believe it’s Mars probably striking up from the west here. [0:38:34 – 0:38:36] Adam: Yeah, we have a really nice campsite, which we haven’t even gotten to. [0:38:37 – 0:38:40] Erik: Well, there’ll be a full discussion in the light of day. [0:38:40 – 0:38:46] Erik: We just wanted to bring you up to speed in terms of our scalded crab rangoons. [0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Adam: I thought they were pretty good. [0:38:48 – 0:38:49] Erik: They were pretty good. [0:38:49 – 0:38:51] Adam: You know, I’m going to give them a 7 out of 10. [0:38:52 – 0:38:52] Erik: Yeah. [0:38:52 – 0:38:55] Adam: As far as the crab rangoons I’ve had in my life. [0:38:55 – 0:38:58] Erik: So far, so good on the walk, cookery. [0:38:58 – 0:39:04] Erik: But yeah, that paddle in, even to find the portage today, we had a bit of trouble. [0:39:06 – 0:39:10] Adam: Jet skiers and water skiers like bamboozling us out there on the big water. [0:39:10 – 0:39:15] Erik: Yeah, there was like a full scow at one point, like a two, like a double-decker pontoon. [0:39:16 – 0:39:18] Erik: Like, what? [0:39:18 – 0:39:20] Adam: I’ve never seen this sort of thing on the gunpoint trail. [0:39:20 – 0:39:21] Adam: I’m going to say that. [0:39:21 – 0:39:22] Adam: Oh, for sure. [0:39:22 – 0:39:29] Adam: The jet skiers, I’ve seen a jet skier, you know, but all of them together, the jet skier, the party decks. [0:39:29 – 0:39:33] Adam: The people water skiing off of the ramps. [0:39:33 – 0:39:40] Erik: It’s like one of those James Bond villain boats where the middle of the boat is hollowed out and everything’s on top. [0:39:40 – 0:39:41] Erik: It’s like a reverse catamaran. [0:39:42 – 0:39:43] Erik: I swear we saw one of those today. [0:39:44 – 0:39:45] Erik: What was going on out there? [0:39:45 – 0:39:46] Adam: I was like, what the hell is that? [0:39:47 – 0:39:48] Adam: I don’t even know what this is. [0:39:48 – 0:39:50] Erik: You know, what are we looking at here? [0:39:50 – 0:39:50] Erik: Yeah. [0:39:50 – 0:39:56] Erik: And there’s all the cabins and boathouses that are like on top of the water. [0:39:56 – 0:40:01] Adam: There’s literally seen an A-frame that was on an island and the A-frame was bigger than the island. [0:40:02 – 0:40:04] Erik: They wouldn’t allow that to be a Boundary Waters campsite. [0:40:04 – 0:40:05] Erik: Maybe Aquatico campsite, obviously. [0:40:05 – 0:40:07] Erik: You can camp wherever you want up there. [0:40:07 – 0:40:12] Erik: But, like, that would be, like, for sure, this island is too small for people to camp at intermittently. [0:40:13 – 0:40:14] Erik: And there’s an A-frame on it. [0:40:14 – 0:40:17] Adam: With somehow, like, a box for electricity? [0:40:17 – 0:40:20] Adam: Do they have underwater cables for electric? [0:40:20 – 0:40:20] Adam: I have no idea. [0:40:21 – 0:40:26] Erik: There’s the big green, like, those buzzing boxes that you used to see when you were, like, growing up as a kid in the neighborhood. [0:40:27 – 0:40:28] Erik: Like, oh, don’t mess with that. [0:40:28 – 0:40:31] Erik: But it was, like, they’re always, like, buzzing and hot. [0:40:31 – 0:40:38] Adam: Plus I saw like two or three signs on islands that was like, my granddaddy bought this island for 10 cents. [0:40:38 – 0:40:40] Adam: Get your hippie asses off of it. [0:40:40 – 0:40:41] Erik: Yeah, basically. [0:40:41 – 0:40:42] Adam: Skull and crossbones. [0:40:43 – 0:40:43] Adam: Yeah. [0:40:43 – 0:40:45] Adam: I was like, okay, Jesus. [0:40:45 – 0:40:48] Erik: I traded for a cup of pudding to own this island. [0:40:49 – 0:40:50] Erik: Get away. [0:40:50 – 0:40:51] Erik: Hey, that was good pudding. [0:40:51 – 0:40:52] Erik: Yeah. [0:40:52 – 0:40:58] Adam: Yeah, a lot of no trespassing signs and weird things being spotted out on Burnside. [0:40:59 – 0:41:02] Adam: It was really an eye-opening paddle on Burnside this morning. [0:41:02 – 0:41:02] Adam: It sure was. [0:41:02 – 0:41:07] Adam: This afternoon, I guess, in a lot of ways, both introspective and… [0:41:08 – 0:41:09] Adam: The other thing. [0:41:09 – 0:41:16] Erik: Yeah, I mean, it was eye-opening and like, oh, boy, I got to really hone, really got to rein in the navigation skills here. [0:41:16 – 0:41:17] Erik: I am all over the map. [0:41:17 – 0:41:20] Erik: I was full-blown lost at one point. [0:41:21 – 0:41:24] Erik: I had to pull out the phone and get… [0:41:24 – 0:41:33] Adam: This is great because the video we were forced to watch at the actual Forest Service headquarters was like, make sure you have a compass and know how to use it. [0:41:33 – 0:41:33] Adam: Yeah. [0:41:33 – 0:41:35] Adam: And we’re out there and we’re like, wait, where the heck are we? [0:41:36 – 0:41:36] Adam: Yeah. [0:41:36 – 0:41:38] Erik: We were way up in school, if you’re following along at home. [0:41:39 – 0:41:43] Erik: We completely, we ended up in school, what was school section bay? [0:41:44 – 0:41:45] SPEAKER_01: I don’t think you nailed it. [0:41:45 – 0:41:53] Erik: Yeah, we, I was like, I was like, I don’t believe what I’m seeing when I fired up the phone and just pulled up Google Maps. [0:41:53 – 0:41:55] Adam: That wasn’t when the trouble started really. [0:41:55 – 0:42:02] Adam: Like we already were like questioning where we were earlier and then we decided collectively to like head in that direction. [0:42:03 – 0:42:05] Adam: And then we’re like, well, this doesn’t look right either. [0:42:05 – 0:42:06] Adam: Like, how did we get turned? [0:42:07 – 0:42:12] Adam: We should have known when the tailwind became a headwind that we had done something wrong probably. [0:42:12 – 0:42:16] Adam: But, you know, sometimes you’re so wrong that you’re right. [0:42:17 – 0:42:19] Adam: And sometimes it’s the other thing. [0:42:20 – 0:42:21] Erik: Yeah, no, totally. [0:42:21 – 0:42:24] Erik: And I was like, we were so close just making a decision to go the other way. [0:42:24 – 0:42:27] Erik: We would have found the portage, like, in another five minutes. [0:42:27 – 0:42:29] Erik: But instead it added, like, almost an hour later. [0:42:30 – 0:42:34] Adam: What’s funny is that we’ve seen this little, like, bay that narrowed down. [0:42:34 – 0:42:36] Adam: Yeah, there we go. [0:42:36 – 0:42:47] Adam: We’ve seen this little bay that narrowed down, which is kind of halfway in between where we wanted to be, and we thought maybe we could sneak through there and that this was an island or something. [0:42:47 – 0:42:58] Adam: We were truly a little lost, and it turns out then after we’d done the whole, like, ridiculous portage up here on the crab, I was looking at the map, and actually you can, like, [0:42:59 – 0:43:12] Adam: I don’t know if this is a good idea or not, but apparently you can run the creek from Crab back down to Burnside, and there’s two small portages along the way, and then it comes out right in the bay we had originally ended up in, like, looking for the portage. [0:43:12 – 0:43:12] Adam: Like, where is it? [0:43:13 – 0:43:21] Adam: We’re a little off here, and we could see this little creek entrance, or what we thought was maybe a Narrows at that point, you know. [0:43:22 – 0:43:25] Adam: And it turns out it’s the alternate route into Crab, actually. [0:43:26 – 0:43:29] Adam: And it’s not the electrocuted fence alternate route. [0:43:29 – 0:43:31] Adam: That’s farther north up there in school. [0:43:31 – 0:43:33] Adam: That’s probably where our school section comes into this. [0:43:33 – 0:43:38] Adam: But then I was like, well, we could maybe try, like, running that out of here later. [0:43:38 – 0:43:48] Adam: But I guarantee you, I guarantee you that would take 18 times longer than what we tried to do just going the normal route through the beaver pond and the 414. [0:43:49 – 0:43:55] Adam: Tell you what, what are you going to give these crabs, these beautiful crab appetizers, Eric, on a scale of 1 to 10? [0:43:56 – 0:43:58] Erik: I thought they were pretty well fried. [0:43:58 – 0:44:04] Erik: Yeah, I would say, obviously, the cooking of them, impeccably cooked. [0:44:05 – 0:44:06] Adam: Obviously, where do you think the crab’s from? [0:44:06 – 0:44:08] Adam: A plant? [0:44:11 – 0:44:12] Adam: Some lab? [0:44:12 – 0:44:13] Adam: Crab farm? [0:44:13 – 0:44:15] Adam: Do they even farm crab? [0:44:15 – 0:44:16] Adam: They probably do. [0:44:16 – 0:44:19] Erik: I’m going to go ahead and give them 7 rands out of 10 goons. [0:44:21 – 0:44:21] Adam: Thank you. [0:44:21 – 0:44:22] Adam: That’s a beautiful ranking. [0:44:23 – 0:44:25] Adam: The wok did great. [0:44:25 – 0:44:29] Adam: We are going to go ahead and do the poutine deluxe and the gravy here later. [0:44:30 – 0:44:35] Erik: Are we prepared for THC gravy at this hour, or are we just going to do the non-THC gravy? [0:44:36 – 0:44:42] Adam: Well, yeah, Eric did, like, eventually find some regular gravy, so… Just in case. [0:44:42 – 0:44:45] Erik: Because I feel like the THC could maybe be an afterthought. [0:44:45 – 0:44:47] Erik: They weren’t taking the gravy seriously. [0:44:48 – 0:44:48] Erik: Right. [0:44:48 – 0:44:53] Erik: And not that, like, your McCormick brand brown gravy packet is going to be excellent. [0:44:53 – 0:44:55] Erik: But I could see maybe, like… [0:44:56 – 0:44:58] Erik: oh, I’m a weed company, let’s make some weed gravy. [0:44:58 – 0:45:01] Erik: That’d be funny, but, like, they don’t know how to make the weed gravy. [0:45:02 – 0:45:03] Adam: They don’t know how to make gravy. [0:45:03 – 0:45:09] Adam: I just figured they bought some gravy packets and then added some, sprinkled some THC in them and then, like, sealed them back up, no? [0:45:10 – 0:45:11] Adam: Just like the ranch dressing? [0:45:11 – 0:45:11] Adam: Yeah. [0:45:14 – 0:45:17] Adam: Had a little ranch dressing in there, a little extra corn syrup, and steal her back up. [0:45:18 – 0:45:20] Adam: Yeah, now it’s your proprietary ownership over that recipe. [0:45:20 – 0:45:32] Adam: I like that you’re concerned about the quality of the gravy and not, like, what it would do to us at this point because I was in a real, like, sour state of mind on that portage, but actually, you know, I’m feeling a lot better. [0:45:32 – 0:45:34] Adam: You know, I caught a bass. [0:45:34 – 0:45:34] Erik: Oh, yeah. [0:45:35 – 0:45:36] UNKNOWN: The loons are out. [0:45:39 – 0:45:41] Adam: We’ve seen their moon that was red as a pizza pie. [0:45:42 – 0:45:44] Adam: Sun, but yeah, that was insane. [0:45:44 – 0:45:47] Erik: The sunset was straight out of Star Wars. [0:45:48 – 0:45:48] Erik: It was. [0:45:48 – 0:45:50] Adam: I was like, how many suns are there up there? [0:45:50 – 0:45:52] Erik: They were just, it was blood red. [0:45:54 – 0:46:23] Erik: coming down in between clouds intermittently just the haze in the air it just hasn’t like it’s it’s been a weird day honestly man like i tell you from like from the get-go when i woke up to here i’m happy to be here i’m so happy that we’re here but like it’s just been like an odd day it was an odd day and really from like the moment i woke up until 8 p.m i was really questioning all the existence of the universe but ever since we arrived here in crab i’m feeling pretty good about things [0:46:23 – 0:46:25] Erik: Yeah, no, I feel great. [0:46:25 – 0:46:37] Erik: Like, I was trying to say, not on mic, but earlier, I was just like, man, when we were coming across that portage, even when we were paddling, I was just like, because we’ve been joking, like, let’s just go stay at the jail. [0:46:37 – 0:46:39] Erik: Let’s just go to the Grand Elite Lodge. [0:46:39 – 0:46:40] Erik: We’ll get crab stuffed walleyes. [0:46:40 – 0:46:43] Erik: We’ll, like, we can fabricate some in the field audio. [0:46:43 – 0:46:45] Erik: Like, we’re too old for this. [0:46:45 – 0:46:46] Erik: What are we doing? [0:46:46 – 0:46:47] Erik: And, like, even today, I was like… [0:46:49 – 0:47:18] Adam: that’s an option we could do that let’s do it but then as soon as we got to this campsite as soon as we got like things set up i was like oh yeah okay so this is why we did what we did yeah it feels good it does to hear the loons going again uh everything’s going pretty good again and we’ve got one of the weirdest fire grates i’ve ever seen we will get to that on the campsite review in the morning but this is one of the weirdest little fire grates we’ve ever piled up to you [0:47:38 – 0:47:41] Adam: Yeah, the stars are kind of starting to peek through. [0:47:41 – 0:47:43] Adam: The clouds appear to be moving off. [0:47:43 – 0:47:50] Adam: We had a lot of sun on the paddle over, but we’ve also had some clouds. [0:47:50 – 0:47:50] Adam: It was weird. [0:47:51 – 0:47:57] Adam: Like Eric said, it was a weird day just in general for the light, but even when we got here, we didn’t. [0:47:58 – 0:48:26] Adam: basically just agreed to only bring one rain fly only to bring it for shade we’re not gonna have any rain and then we got here and it was like well it kind of looks like it might rain but it didn’t you know it just sort of dissipated and moved off but yeah now we’re getting some good we’re getting some good stars here and just that it’s that time of night where it finally gets dark enough in june where you can see the stars start to pop out we first saw mars over here [0:48:27 – 0:48:31] Adam: And now we’re starting to get them up top here and the clouds are just moving off in the right way. [0:48:31 – 0:48:34] Erik: It’s so that means it’s 1 30 AM. [0:48:35 – 0:48:36] Adam: We’re not looking at the clock. [0:48:36 – 0:48:43] Adam: Both of our phones are off at this point and we don’t know what time it is, but it’s probably really, really late. [0:48:43 – 0:48:43] Adam: Probably. [0:48:44 – 0:48:48] Erik: We do have a deep distance to neighbor for a hot minute. [0:48:48 – 0:48:56] Erik: We thought we were the only ones here, but there is distant headlamps on the opposite shore. [0:48:57 – 0:49:00] Adam: We saw him, you know, we’re like, we’re rescued. [0:49:02 – 0:49:02] SPEAKER_01: Wilson. [0:49:03 – 0:49:03] SPEAKER_01: Wilson. [0:49:05 – 0:49:05] UNKNOWN: Never again. [0:49:06 – 0:49:06] Adam: Never again. [0:49:06 – 0:49:10] Erik: We’ll talk about that later. [0:49:11 – 0:49:12] Erik: That’s a story for another day. [0:49:12 – 0:49:14] Adam: All right. [0:49:14 – 0:49:19] Adam: It’s time for us to start frying up some French fried potato and the gravy. [0:49:19 – 0:49:22] Adam: So we’re going to have to leave you here for now. [0:49:22 – 0:49:24] Adam: And we’ll probably just update you in the morning at this point. [0:49:25 – 0:49:27] Adam: I don’t think we’re going to do any TCCs, are we? [0:49:27 – 0:49:29] Erik: I don’t know if I’ve got it in me at this point. [0:49:29 – 0:49:32] Erik: I’m probably going to get pretty poutines down. [0:49:32 – 0:49:33] Adam: We’ll see, though. [0:49:33 – 0:49:35] Adam: Sometimes the gravy gives you extra power, though, right? [0:49:36 – 0:49:37] Erik: THC gravy, you never know. [0:49:38 – 0:49:42] Adam: Oh, we’ll have a blind gravy taste test, and we’ll let you know how that all went in the morning. [0:49:42 – 0:49:43] Adam: Thanks for being here. [0:49:43 – 0:49:47] Adam: Tell my homies, time for us to get busy on this gravy. [0:49:47 – 0:49:48] Adam: Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye. [0:49:54 – 0:49:54] Erik: Can you hear it? [0:49:56 – 0:50:03] Erik: We’re in between waves, and we have fully embraced Bobbyism into our lives. [0:50:06 – 0:50:07] Erik: It’s morning. [0:50:08 – 0:50:10] Erik: Well, technically it’s 2.30 in the afternoon. [0:50:13 – 0:50:15] Adam: Eric looked at the clock finally. [0:50:15 – 0:50:16] Adam: It’s been cloudy all morning. [0:50:16 – 0:50:21] Adam: I just did get a glimpse of the sun, which appears to be kind of directly overhead, but [0:50:22 – 0:50:26] Adam: Yeah, it’s apparently early afternoon now here on Crab Lake. [0:50:27 – 0:50:29] Adam: And we’re not going anywhere. [0:50:29 – 0:50:30] Erik: We’re just going to hang out. [0:50:31 – 0:50:44] Erik: Yeah, first time in a long time, if not first time ever, that we have, obviously, I’m sure you can tell just by listening, damn near dead calm out there. [0:50:45 – 0:50:47] Erik: We could be racking up the miles right now. [0:50:47 – 0:50:47] Erik: Could be. [0:50:48 – 0:50:49] UNKNOWN: But we’re not. [0:50:50 – 0:50:51] Adam: Yeah, we’re going to play it smart. [0:50:52 – 0:50:52] Erik: Mm-hmm. [0:50:53 – 0:50:55] Adam: We did a really good work on the hand last night. [0:50:56 – 0:50:57] Adam: That sounds great. [0:50:58 – 0:51:02] Adam: Eric oiled his whole hand up with seal blubber. [0:51:03 – 0:51:03] Adam: Ambergris. [0:51:03 – 0:51:06] Adam: And then put a glove over it, and he said, that’s my soft hand. [0:51:06 – 0:51:07] Adam: Yep. [0:51:08 – 0:51:11] Adam: And then he slept like that, and it looks really good this morning. [0:51:11 – 0:51:12] Erik: It’s looking good. [0:51:12 – 0:51:17] Erik: Last night I pulled the bandage off, and you were mildly shocked at what you saw. [0:51:17 – 0:51:18] Adam: Some of it came with, yeah. [0:51:19 – 0:51:19] Erik: Some of it came with. [0:51:19 – 0:51:28] Erik: There was a new layer, like the kind of hue, a color that you don’t want to see being discharged from your body. [0:51:28 – 0:51:34] Erik: It kind of reminded me of what that THC gravy that we had last night looked like, which we have to talk about. [0:51:35 – 0:51:35] Adam: We will. [0:51:35 – 0:51:46] Adam: And it also kind of reminded me of when Tom Hanks finally catches that crab on Castaway, and he doesn’t cook it, though, and he just cracks one open, and it’s got this weird sort of just goo on the inside. [0:51:47 – 0:51:48] Adam: Crab’s goo. [0:51:48 – 0:51:51] Adam: That’s not to be confused with crab rangoon. [0:51:51 – 0:51:53] Erik: Completely different. [0:51:53 – 0:51:53] Erik: Is that real? [0:51:54 – 0:51:57] Erik: Like, do you have to cook… To make the meat firm? [0:51:57 – 0:51:57] Erik: To firm the meat up? [0:51:57 – 0:51:58] Erik: Is it like Arby’s meat? [0:52:01 – 0:52:02] Erik: We have the crabs. [0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Adam: We have the goo. [0:52:05 – 0:52:10] Adam: I don’t know, but it seemed to be better once he had figured out a way to cook them, is all I’m saying. [0:52:10 – 0:52:13] Adam: But that’s what it kind of looked like when he peeled the bandage off last night. [0:52:14 – 0:52:19] Adam: But I thought you got some pretty good wound care management last night. [0:52:19 – 0:52:22] Adam: Fresh wrap before bed, and we stayed up pretty late last night. [0:52:23 – 0:52:23] SPEAKER_01: What was that? [0:52:23 – 0:52:26] Erik: Turns out, stayed up pretty late. [0:52:27 – 0:52:28] Erik: But, yeah, I don’t know. [0:52:28 – 0:52:28] Erik: We got up this morning. [0:52:28 – 0:52:36] Erik: We were feeling fine, but it kind of just, like, slowly, because we never really sat down last night and made, like, a definitive plan on what we were going to do. [0:52:37 – 0:52:42] Erik: We have options, and they’ve been slowly ratcheting back based on how things are going. [0:52:43 – 0:52:51] Adam: Yeah, the little orb around Gordy on the track or on the canoe is slowly, like, closing in on us the longer we sit here. [0:52:52 – 0:52:54] Adam: And that’s just the case always. [0:52:54 – 0:52:57] Adam: But, wow, it’s going to be nice. [0:52:57 – 0:53:02] Adam: When was the last time we just sat in the campsite all day on a nice day where we could have paddled? [0:53:02 – 0:53:04] Adam: Like, I can’t remember the last time we did this. [0:53:04 – 0:53:10] Erik: Well, the only real examples don’t really fit with us because they’re anomalies. [0:53:10 – 0:53:14] Erik: But the Fourth of Brulai trips, but that’s a whole different thing. [0:53:14 – 0:53:17] Erik: That’s like a, you know, that’s borderline… [0:53:18 – 0:53:42] Erik: dare-like behavior that we’re on levy right there but yeah we really haven’t just ever like i don’t know you just we’ve never just sat back and like enjoyed being in a place and i think it’s already paid off we’ve got some great animal encounters that we’re going to talk about we definitely need to start by talking about the the the plan and the walk and [0:53:43 – 0:53:44] Erik: And the… [0:53:45 – 0:53:50] Erik: I think you are not as disappointed in the end product that I am. [0:53:51 – 0:53:51] Erik: The poutine? [0:53:51 – 0:53:53] Erik: The poutine we had last night. [0:53:53 – 0:53:54] Erik: It was late. [0:53:54 – 0:53:55] Erik: It was a late poutine. [0:53:55 – 0:53:56] Erik: Yeah. [0:53:56 – 0:53:59] Adam: Probably pushed an 11 p.m. by the time we really ate the poutine. [0:53:59 – 0:53:59] Erik: Yeah. [0:54:00 – 0:54:01] Erik: We had the Rangoons. [0:54:01 – 0:54:02] Erik: We ranked the Rangoons. [0:54:03 – 0:54:03] Erik: Yes. [0:54:03 – 0:54:06] Erik: And then we got the walk going with a little bit more oil and… [0:54:08 – 0:54:11] Erik: My biggest disappointment was I’m calling them out. [0:54:12 – 0:54:13] Erik: I’m calling out Orida. [0:54:13 – 0:54:14] Erik: Orida, you’re on blast. [0:54:15 – 0:54:15] Erik: Get it together. [0:54:16 – 0:54:20] Erik: I mean, what they call fries, these, I think, are a variety of their fries. [0:54:20 – 0:54:26] Erik: They probably have better ones, but they look like crinkle cut fries, which is what I needed, what I wanted. [0:54:26 – 0:54:27] Adam: I saw the picture. [0:54:27 – 0:54:29] Adam: The picture on this is the problem. [0:54:29 – 0:54:35] Adam: They just need to have a clear bag and like a real plain Dharma Initiative style label on everything. [0:54:35 – 0:54:39] Adam: Nowadays, you know, it’s more about how the bag looks than what’s inside. [0:54:39 – 0:54:47] Erik: Yeah, I want to just make sure that anybody that’s out there at home listening knows, beware, do not buy golden crispers from Ore-Ida. [0:54:47 – 0:54:48] Erik: These are not french fries. [0:54:48 – 0:54:52] Erik: These are pressed sweepings that they probably dredge up from the floor at the potato factory. [0:54:52 – 0:54:55] Adam: Yeah, we figure this is from, like, the third vat. [0:54:56 – 0:55:01] Adam: It’s third vat dregs that they repressed into what basically looks like a bunch of Cheetos. [0:55:02 – 0:55:03] Adam: It’s really weird. [0:55:03 – 0:55:06] Adam: I was telling Eric this morning, I was thinking about it a lot. [0:55:07 – 0:55:10] Adam: They probably don’t intend, most people aren’t probably actually going to deep fry them. [0:55:10 – 0:55:15] Adam: And maybe if you just throw them in the oven, they kind of like puffed up. [0:55:15 – 0:55:20] Erik: They’re very crunchy on the outside, but the inside is just like a soft… [0:55:21 – 0:55:39] Erik: mush it’s not like you know there’s no like potato like you kind of get like even the lightest little slightest bit of like a kind of like a break or like a snap where it’s like this is the original this is still potato material it wasn’t potato it was like like you said it was like pressed peanut sweepings it was like potato product [0:55:39 – 0:55:39] Erik: Yeah. [0:55:40 – 0:55:41] Erik: Which is just absurd. [0:55:41 – 0:55:45] Erik: Like, is that the level that we’re at now with food where we’re just, we have to use every tiny bit. [0:55:45 – 0:55:46] Erik: So we’re going to make these fries. [0:55:46 – 0:55:49] Erik: We’re going to press them in the shape of fries, but they are definitely not. [0:55:49 – 0:55:50] Adam: Chicken nuggets of fries. [0:55:51 – 0:55:52] Erik: It’s the chicken nuggets of fries. [0:55:52 – 0:55:54] Erik: And it’s like, if anybody. [0:55:54 – 0:55:56] Adam: We don’t have potatoes, just cut some regular French fries out. [0:55:56 – 0:55:57] Erik: Right. [0:55:57 – 0:55:58] Erik: It’s not like meat. [0:55:58 – 0:55:59] Erik: You’re like, okay, fine, I get it. [0:55:59 – 0:56:01] Erik: It’s a chicken nugget. [0:56:01 – 0:56:02] Erik: You’ve got to reuse the meat. [0:56:02 – 0:56:03] Erik: That’s probably a good thing. [0:56:03 – 0:56:04] Erik: These are potatoes. [0:56:04 – 0:56:06] Erik: We can’t just be cutting fresh potatoes. [0:56:06 – 0:56:12] Adam: Well, I don’t want to waste anything either, but at least don’t promise one thing on the bag. [0:56:12 – 0:56:14] Adam: As you were saying earlier, it’s about expectations. [0:56:14 – 0:56:16] Adam: The picture on the front looks like you’re getting crinkle cuts. [0:56:17 – 0:56:19] Adam: It does sort of look like they’re breaded a little or something maybe. [0:56:19 – 0:56:20] Adam: I don’t know. [0:56:20 – 0:56:21] Adam: It’s hard to tell from that. [0:56:22 – 0:56:51] Erik: that packaging but yeah it’s um i’m claiming i’m calling false advertising on this one they’re calling yeah we’re calling you out yeah and anyway it definitely affected my just to finish up describing it with one more thing if you’ve ever worked a fry later and after like a big rush of food you end up with all like the bits that have been crispy bits yeah that have been in the fryer for like way too long you just got to clean them out with the little spider like the little cleaner sieve thing that’s literally what it felt like i was eating yeah well those aren’t bad to eat like one or two [0:56:52 – 0:57:16] Adam: right not a whole plate of them yeah and then gravy was good you know the cheese curds were pretty good i don’t know the gravy was it didn’t really taste like anything though it was just like salty it was like it tasted salty yeah it was i wasn’t impressed with the flavor on the gravy but i’m pretty sure they weren’t trying to impress me with the flavor on the thc gravy but at least you know you [0:57:17 – 0:57:19] Adam: I was expecting a little bit more on that too, but I don’t know. [0:57:19 – 0:57:21] Adam: It was still pretty novel and interesting. [0:57:21 – 0:57:26] Adam: And I couldn’t really tell it was THC gravy, but I did sleep very well last night in the hammock. [0:57:26 – 0:57:28] Adam: So I was relaxed. [0:57:28 – 0:57:34] Erik: I was going to say, I don’t think we were at the point last night to be feeling five milligrams of THC at that point. [0:57:34 – 0:57:36] Erik: I had the sweet dreams. [0:57:36 – 0:57:37] Adam: The sweet, sweet dreams. [0:57:40 – 0:57:45] Erik: Um, but yeah, I think I was disappointed in the amount of gravy too, which could have just used a little bit more coverage. [0:57:46 – 0:57:47] Erik: The idea was there. [0:57:47 – 0:57:48] Erik: It just didn’t come fully together. [0:57:48 – 0:57:52] Erik: And then I was just generally disappointed in, in the whole execution. [0:57:52 – 0:57:52] Adam: Yeah. [0:57:52 – 0:57:52] Adam: Yeah. [0:57:53 – 0:57:56] Adam: I mean, you know, we both have like high expectations for ourselves. [0:57:56 – 0:58:05] Adam: I think that’s key to anything on a good trip, you know, be reasonable with yourself, you know, set reasonable expectations, but also like have high expectations for yourself. [0:58:05 – 0:58:11] Adam: Even if you don’t hit the mark, it’s not the end of the world, but you always want to be trying to have that banger of a trip where everything goes right. [0:58:11 – 0:58:15] Adam: In this case, we’d probably make some adjustments to the poutine deluxe recipe if we’re going to try it again. [0:58:16 – 0:58:18] Erik: Well, it for sure would go with a different fry brand. [0:58:18 – 0:58:19] Adam: We could have just brought our own potatoes. [0:58:19 – 0:58:22] Adam: I could have gotten my hands on a 50-pound box of potatoes, no problem. [0:58:22 – 0:58:24] Adam: It’s not like there’s a potato shortage. [0:58:24 – 0:58:25] Erik: That’s what we should do next time. [0:58:26 – 0:58:33] Erik: We should just go full-blown fresh potato, more gravy, do it maybe a little bit earlier in the night. [0:58:33 – 0:58:37] Erik: Maybe not wait until 11. [0:58:37 – 0:58:43] Erik: I feel like we’ve had experiences in the past where we’re like, hey, let’s do this, and then it just turns out great, like the salads. [0:58:43 – 0:58:44] Erik: We’re like, okay, that’s fine. [0:58:45 – 0:58:45] Erik: We did it. [0:58:45 – 0:58:47] Adam: Sometimes it takes a few tries to get something just right. [0:58:48 – 0:58:49] Adam: It’s a brand-new wok, too. [0:58:50 – 0:58:55] Adam: Um, first fire of the year, you know, I felt like the fire was adequate, a lot of good heat coming out of there, but. [0:58:56 – 0:58:57] Erik: Yeah, we were definitely frying. [0:58:57 – 0:58:58] Erik: I mean, it was deep. [0:58:58 – 0:59:04] Erik: We had deep fried French fries last night, but it’s just a little, a little underwhelming. [0:59:04 – 0:59:09] Adam: Chopped up some, uh, cherry tomato and some red pepper, uh, threw that on top. [0:59:11 – 0:59:15] Adam: Overall, it was a pretty good dinner, but, you know, yeah, we could do it better for sure. [0:59:15 – 0:59:20] Erik: Yeah, I guess at the end of the day, it boils down to we could have, it could be better. [0:59:20 – 0:59:27] Erik: I don’t know if we could have done better given the scenario last night, but going forward, moving forward, it could be improved, and we will. [0:59:27 – 0:59:29] Adam: My Amok set could have been better last night. [0:59:29 – 0:59:30] Adam: I moved it. [0:59:30 – 0:59:32] Adam: It’s going to be better tonight for sure, you know. [0:59:32 – 0:59:35] Adam: Just take what you got and then move forward as best you can. [0:59:35 – 0:59:36] Adam: That’s what we do. [0:59:36 – 0:59:39] Adam: Remember seeing that Lunamoth crash into the lake last night? [0:59:39 – 0:59:41] Adam: Oh, yeah, we should do Animal Roundup. [0:59:41 – 0:59:45] Adam: We should start with… [0:59:45 – 0:59:49] Adam: Animal Roundup, Animal Roundup, Animal, Animal, Animal Roundup. [0:59:50 – 0:59:51] Erik: There it is. [0:59:51 – 0:59:54] Erik: Somebody take that, and we need a light theme song. [0:59:54 – 0:59:56] Erik: Tumblehomecast at gmail.com. [0:59:57 – 0:59:58] Erik: Chiptune Guy, are you still out there? [0:59:58 – 0:59:59] Erik: I think he is still out there. [1:00:00 – 1:00:01] Erik: Bless your heart. [1:00:03 – 1:00:04] Erik: Chiptune Guy is enough. [1:00:04 – 1:00:06] Erik: I think I used to know your name. [1:00:06 – 1:00:07] Adam: Don’t dox him. [1:00:08 – 1:00:08] Adam: No. [1:00:08 – 1:00:09] Adam: Here’s his home address. [1:00:10 – 1:00:11] Adam: He’s got really nice equipment. [1:00:12 – 1:00:13] Erik: Yeah, no. [1:00:13 – 1:00:17] Erik: We should start with the Portage Inn yesterday. [1:00:17 – 1:00:18] Erik: You had an experience? [1:00:19 – 1:00:26] Adam: Yeah, well, so we ended up having to break the 400 plus into crab into two shorter portages. [1:00:27 – 1:00:33] Adam: I think we described last night how a possible ghost man or ghost couple warned us of the depths of the beaver pond in the middle. [1:00:34 – 1:00:38] Adam: And I think that was generally about halfway on that portage was where we hit that beaver pond and [1:00:39 – 1:00:41] Adam: So we had to break that into two. [1:00:41 – 1:00:43] Adam: So then we were always doing one and a half. [1:00:43 – 1:00:44] Adam: People go back and listen. [1:00:44 – 1:00:51] Adam: You know, one and a half is a well-established theory and generally what we go to based on our procedures and loads. [1:00:52 – 1:00:56] Adam: And so it was the second half from the beaver pond to crab. [1:00:57 – 1:00:59] Adam: And it was my turn to go back and do the half. [1:01:00 – 1:01:06] Adam: So I’m coming back and there’s a long stretch in there that’s just like generally at a 5% grade uphill. [1:01:07 – 1:01:07] Erik: And like straight. [1:01:08 – 1:01:09] Adam: Shockingly uphill. [1:01:09 – 1:01:11] Adam: Like I wasn’t expecting to have to do that much climbing. [1:01:11 – 1:01:15] Adam: So the first time through at the pack, it was like, what the hell is going on with this, this hill? [1:01:16 – 1:01:18] Adam: And you get to the top and there’s some like rock cairns. [1:01:18 – 1:01:24] Adam: And then you generally are downhill like maybe another 70 rods from the cairns back down to the sand beach landing. [1:01:25 – 1:01:26] Adam: So I put the pack down. [1:01:26 – 1:01:27] Adam: Eric’s there. [1:01:27 – 1:01:28] Adam: I go back and get the canoe. [1:01:28 – 1:01:29] Adam: I’m going up that hill with the canoe. [1:01:30 – 1:01:32] Adam: So the nose of the boat is actually up a little bit. [1:01:32 – 1:01:37] Adam: And you can kind of see ahead more than you normally would if you were on flat ground or especially going downhill. [1:01:38 – 1:01:41] Adam: And all of a sudden this like bird swooped down, right? [1:01:42 – 1:01:45] Adam: Like a couple of feet off the deck, right? [1:01:45 – 1:01:47] Adam: Just flying down the portage towards me. [1:01:47 – 1:01:51] Adam: And it saw me and I saw it and I kind of like lifted the nose up even more. [1:01:51 – 1:01:52] Adam: And then it like flew off to the left. [1:01:54 – 1:01:54] Adam: I don’t know. [1:01:54 – 1:02:01] Adam: It was either some sort of barred owl is my best guess, but it was some sort of hawk or owl combo. [1:02:01 – 1:02:01] Adam: I can’t tell. [1:02:01 – 1:02:05] Adam: It was late in the day where it makes me believe it could have been an owl. [1:02:05 – 1:02:08] Adam: We were getting there on light. [1:02:08 – 1:02:11] Erik: It’s not like they only can survive at night. [1:02:11 – 1:02:12] Erik: It happens. [1:02:12 – 1:02:14] Erik: If it was a good size… [1:02:14 – 1:02:15] Adam: It was a good size. [1:02:15 – 1:02:23] Erik: There’s not too many animals that are swooping through the forest like that, that are that big, like a bird of prey, that is not an owl. [1:02:23 – 1:02:29] Adam: I’m definitely not strong on my bird IDs, and I got just barely a glimpse of it, and then it was gone. [1:02:30 – 1:02:30] Adam: One of those things. [1:02:31 – 1:02:50] Adam: either way it was a cool experience i’ve never i’m in my whole life been going down a portage and just had a bird swoop down and like flying at me at like knee level and then and then it was gone so pretty much a new experience for me having a bird encounter on the portage like that so that was a special start to our adventures here into crab [1:02:50 – 1:02:57] Erik: Yeah, and we had two mildly aggressive painted turtles just right on the portage. [1:02:57 – 1:02:57] Adam: That’s true. [1:02:57 – 1:02:59] Adam: We should have taken that as a hint right away. [1:02:59 – 1:03:01] Adam: The turtles were after us a little bit. [1:03:01 – 1:03:04] Adam: They were out there with little signs saying, like, go back. [1:03:04 – 1:03:06] Erik: Yeah, you don’t want to mess. [1:03:06 – 1:03:08] Erik: Little hand-picked signs. [1:03:08 – 1:03:11] Erik: You don’t want to mess with the turtle that’s out on crab. [1:03:11 – 1:03:12] Erik: The painted turtles are our friends. [1:03:13 – 1:03:18] Erik: But we have been slowly working on a new friend, a different form of a turtle. [1:03:19 – 1:03:26] Erik: This guy Adam was spending some time with this morning, a big snapper right off camp here that I was kind of laying in the hammock and just like looking out at. [1:03:26 – 1:03:31] Erik: And you would see its nose for a little bit, but we never got a real good solid look at its body. [1:03:31 – 1:03:35] Erik: And then until we brought out the cheese curds. [1:03:35 – 1:03:35] Adam: Yeah. [1:03:35 – 1:03:44] Adam: Well, I was, I was, I got up, you know, not quite early, but I was up and I threw the bobber in and I was, I moved my chair out here on this nice rock. [1:03:45 – 1:03:52] Adam: And, uh, all of a sudden I heard some splash in and I was like, oh, and then, then I saw it, you know, it’s this massive snapping turtle. [1:03:53 – 1:03:56] Adam: And it’s clearly like milling around this rock. [1:03:56 – 1:03:59] Adam: It kind of keeps popping up every once in a while. [1:03:59 – 1:04:04] Adam: Like it’s got this little snout and these little beady eyes and just the tip of the beak. [1:04:04 – 1:04:07] Adam: It comes up above the water and it like it’s begging for treats almost. [1:04:08 – 1:04:13] Adam: It clearly is begging for treats because we’re not that far into the boundary waters right now. [1:04:13 – 1:04:15] Adam: And it’s all over the place. [1:04:15 – 1:04:20] Adam: And it’s both terrifying to look at, but it’s also sort of cute, Eric. [1:04:21 – 1:04:23] Erik: He is kind of cute and also terrifying. [1:04:25 – 1:04:29] Erik: There’s so many different parts about this thing that’s just kind of crazy to me. [1:04:30 – 1:04:34] Erik: Because right away I threw a little, yeah, we’re full-blown Bobby. [1:04:34 – 1:04:35] Erik: We’re feeding the wild. [1:04:36 – 1:04:36] Erik: Yeah. [1:04:37 – 1:04:41] Erik: We gave some cheese curds to what I thought right away was the snapping turtle eating it. [1:04:41 – 1:04:42] Adam: I thought the turtle was taking them. [1:04:42 – 1:04:47] Erik: Because you just see the orange slowly start drifting to the bottom of the lake and you see it disappear and kind of scoot away. [1:04:48 – 1:04:55] Erik: But then upon closer inspection, we went over and it’s little bluegills that are snapping up right around this snapping turtle. [1:04:55 – 1:04:55] Erik: It’s [1:04:55 – 1:05:17] Erik: pretty crazy how close they’re willing to get to the snapping turtle to get a cheese curd is what we saw yeah so then i took little bits of cheese curds and strategically tried throwing them so that the bluegills would swim close to the turtle and he made a couple of swipes and maybe the most terrifying thing about this snapping turtle and i’m assuming snapping turtles in general is when they want to they can move quick [1:05:17 – 1:05:25] Adam: I noticed it earlier, and this is this morning, and you were still asleep, and I was fishing, and I thought he was trying to nip at my line or something. [1:05:25 – 1:05:28] Adam: But then I’d get up to just get a look at him. [1:05:28 – 1:05:31] Adam: I’m not going to mess with him, obviously, and he would just be like, he’s gone. [1:05:31 – 1:05:34] Adam: I’m like, wow, he’s a big boy, but he can move. [1:05:34 – 1:05:37] Erik: Yeah, the way that his neck just darted. [1:05:37 – 1:05:44] Adam: Yeah, it’s like watching a Venus flytrap or like a praying mantis in ultra HD slow-mo. [1:05:45 – 1:05:48] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know if he ever actually got a hold of a bluegill. [1:05:48 – 1:05:50] Adam: I think he got that first one. [1:05:50 – 1:05:54] Adam: That looked like he swam right in front of him, and then he just went like, and it was gone. [1:05:54 – 1:05:56] Adam: And we’re like, whoa, did he just get that bluegill? [1:05:56 – 1:05:58] Adam: He swallowed it whole. [1:05:58 – 1:05:59] Adam: That’s how big this thing is. [1:05:59 – 1:05:59] Erik: It’s massive. [1:05:59 – 1:06:01] Adam: It’s like bigger than the walk. [1:06:01 – 1:06:25] Adam: it is bigger than the walk and then eric even landed a little piece of cheese curd right on his head yeah no no you could still tell the bluegills were like i should get it that’s actually maybe a safe spot you know they were keeping their distance yeah stay behind the beak that’s what they teach you in the first day of bluegill safety class when you’re just starting out they’re like yeah always stay behind the beak for safety [1:06:25 – 1:06:26] Erik: Yeah, for sure. [1:06:26 – 1:06:32] Erik: And then I think the other thing that I noticed that I’ve never experienced before was this thing that was so close to shore. [1:06:32 – 1:06:33] Erik: I was just standing down on the rock. [1:06:33 – 1:06:34] Erik: I think you were up in camp. [1:06:35 – 1:06:39] Erik: And he came up with his little beak, his little nostril, and I could hear him taking in a breath. [1:06:40 – 1:06:47] Erik: And it kind of gave me the feeling that you get when you see like a bunch of crawly things, like a bunch of ants or something. [1:06:47 – 1:06:48] Erik: There’s a word for it. [1:06:48 – 1:06:51] Erik: It kind of gave me the, like, oh, no. [1:06:52 – 1:06:52] Erik: It was just like… [1:06:58 – 1:06:58] Erik: All in. [1:06:59 – 1:07:00] Erik: No out. [1:07:02 – 1:07:13] Erik: And then, so we didn’t get a for sure sighting of, we don’t have a name for him either, but I think we’re just fine having him be Rogue, unnamed Turtle. [1:07:14 – 1:07:15] Erik: And then you… [1:07:16 – 1:07:16] Adam: Turtle Gang. [1:07:17 – 1:07:19] Adam: We’re now, we’re done with Queet Gang. [1:07:19 – 1:07:22] Adam: We’re no longer friends with Queet Gang. [1:07:22 – 1:07:23] Adam: We’re now in Turtle Gang. [1:07:23 – 1:07:23] Erik: Yeah. [1:07:24 – 1:07:25] Adam: That’s official. [1:07:26 – 1:07:26] Erik: Turtle Gang. [1:07:28 – 1:07:29] Erik: What was the… Oh, gosh. [1:07:29 – 1:07:33] Erik: We have another product that will probably be consumed today. [1:07:34 – 1:07:39] Erik: A new biter to us that has words and phrases on it that neither of us are familiar with. [1:07:39 – 1:07:43] Erik: So we’re going to need the Zoomers to come out and help us with… [1:07:45 – 1:08:02] Erik: decrypting the the language on this biter bag it’s it seems like it’s in it’s based in the gamer realm so we’ll get to that later but anyway adam hooked in gut hooked a tiny little bass and it was like well yeah wall wall eric’s feeding cheese skirts to the bluegills yeah [1:08:03 – 1:08:08] Erik: And so we’re like, well, let’s see if big boy wants a fish. [1:08:08 – 1:08:10] Adam: It was really gut-hooked. [1:08:11 – 1:08:12] Adam: I have my pliers with me. [1:08:13 – 1:08:15] Adam: I’m usually pretty good with the pliers, but it was way down in there. [1:08:16 – 1:08:18] Adam: Honestly, I was watching the bobber, too. [1:08:18 – 1:08:21] Adam: It wasn’t like one of those things where I had left the bobber alone for a minute or something. [1:08:22 – 1:08:25] Adam: I think I swear that those tiny fish just go crazy, you know? [1:08:25 – 1:08:28] Adam: They’re a little too aggressive. [1:08:28 – 1:08:30] Adam: They need to show some restraint. [1:08:30 – 1:08:31] Erik: I just want this in my stomach. [1:08:31 – 1:08:31] Erik: No! [1:08:32 – 1:08:59] Adam: immediately i want to eat this so we uh yeah we tossed it out to our our friend and yeah he was kind of stunned this little bass and we tossed it out to the friend it was a pretty good toss eric it was right in the right in the kill zone because i used to be a world ranked cornhole player back in the day i was like when cornhole was first starting out i was like in the top 100 in the world in cornhole so i got a pretty good stroke [1:08:59 – 1:09:20] Adam: was that before it was uh taken over by bush’s beans as a big sponsored pro league it was a like a real like dark alley kind of sport for only for tailgating and youtube yeah no sponsors no sponsors at all like the top tournaments were just being played in like really dirty bars like the quasi wabbit and uh ely don’t ever go there [1:09:21 – 1:09:24] Erik: Definitely don’t go there wearing a N95 mask, that’s for sure. [1:09:25 – 1:09:29] Erik: But, yeah, he didn’t actually go as crazy. [1:09:30 – 1:09:31] Erik: He snapped the thing up immediately. [1:09:31 – 1:09:32] Erik: Grabbed it. [1:09:32 – 1:09:34] Erik: But he kind of just, like, was rooting around with it. [1:09:34 – 1:09:36] Erik: Those claws on that thing. [1:09:36 – 1:09:37] Adam: Oh, watching the claw work. [1:09:37 – 1:09:42] Adam: Yeah, going on both sides like he was a hungry boy eating a full corn of cob. [1:09:42 – 1:09:45] Erik: Yeah, it’s like a little lake dog kind of. [1:09:45 – 1:09:45] Erik: It is. [1:09:45 – 1:09:47] Erik: He has a little root, and he’s kind of grinding it a little bit. [1:09:47 – 1:09:49] Erik: And then all of a sudden, he just decided. [1:09:49 – 1:09:50] Erik: Now is the time. [1:09:50 – 1:09:51] Erik: He just snorted the whole thing down. [1:09:51 – 1:09:52] Erik: It was gone in an instant. [1:09:52 – 1:09:54] Adam: Yeah. [1:09:54 – 1:09:55] Adam: Very impressive to watch that thing work. [1:09:56 – 1:09:57] Erik: It was highly impressive. [1:09:57 – 1:10:02] Erik: We were like, if we would have had the GoPro, I could have stuck that thing in the lake for a bass feasting cam. [1:10:02 – 1:10:03] Adam: That was our idea. [1:10:03 – 1:10:08] Adam: At first, I was like, well, I could just put a bass on the stringer and then attach the GoPro right to the stringer. [1:10:08 – 1:10:09] Adam: Stringer cam. [1:10:09 – 1:10:10] Adam: Pew, pew, pew. [1:10:11 – 1:10:14] Adam: That would have been some insane footage. [1:10:14 – 1:10:21] Adam: Your GoPro probably wouldn’t survive the attempt, but it would be impressive to see for sure because this thing is a real magnificent beast. [1:10:22 – 1:10:22] Adam: Turtle gang. [1:10:23 – 1:10:24] Adam: Turtle gangs. [1:10:25 – 1:10:37] Erik: So, yeah, that was, I would say, by far the highlight of the morning and has, I would say, completely made up for any, like, regret for like, well, we could be out there paddling, seeing some things. [1:10:37 – 1:10:43] Erik: It’s like sometimes you can experience things by just not going anywhere, getting a little bit more familiar with your surroundings. [1:10:43 – 1:10:43] Erik: Yeah. [1:10:43 – 1:11:06] Adam: you realize it’s like with the mosquitoes like if you keep moving around the mosquitoes follow you but if you just sit still for five minutes they get bored with you eventually and move on move on off it’s the same kind of like concept why i’m not very good at hunting because i’m not very good at sitting still and just doing nothing right but when you do that the things come to you exactly instead of you going to the things eric [1:11:06 – 1:11:22] Erik: Yeah, and as you were moving your hammock, we had another cool nature experience with the borderline within, I would say, minutes of a dragonfly hatch cracking out of its hellgrammite shell. [1:11:23 – 1:11:26] Erik: And it was sitting on this pine tree that you were tied to at the time. [1:11:27 – 1:11:32] Erik: And you could see the wings were, like, still glisteningly moist and fresh. [1:11:32 – 1:11:33] Erik: And he was doing this little, like… [1:11:35 – 1:11:37] Erik: just kind of like drying them off. [1:11:37 – 1:11:39] Erik: And you can see that [1:11:40 – 1:11:43] Erik: The husk was attached to one of your hammock straps. [1:11:43 – 1:11:50] Adam: My old slap strap, which we were just briefly, I was just talking about how I need to get rid of these and get better straps. [1:11:50 – 1:11:53] Adam: But now I found out they’re friendly to the helgerbite. [1:11:53 – 1:11:56] Adam: They had two of them actually on there, latched on. [1:11:57 – 1:12:07] Adam: So what apparently happened was we set up last night, and then these dragonflies crawled out of the lake and up the red pine I was attached to, which is, I’d say, six feet from the lake. [1:12:08 – 1:12:09] Adam: There was that one. [1:12:10 – 1:12:19] Adam: Um, and then crawled up and then got onto my slap strap and that’s where they like latched on and perform their final, uh, metamorphosis. [1:12:20 – 1:12:22] Erik: It’s such an, that’s pretty insane. [1:12:22 – 1:12:27] Adam: We did have, I was sleeping, they were in there growing their wings and like cracking open the shells. [1:12:27 – 1:12:27] Adam: Like, yeah. [1:12:28 – 1:12:54] Erik: wow you know for the amount of mosquitoes that are out there is a shocking paucity of airborne assaults from the dragonflies like we need more of them come on dudes are they just like a little bit behind like just in the life cycle they can’t they always are so we’re in that perfect phase where the mosquitoes are insane but the dragonflies are still like we’re waiting for the like reinforcements you know and it’s they’re coming but we’re hunkered down but it’s good to see a couple of them like [1:12:55 – 1:13:05] Adam: So we’re kind of watching because if you remember the dragonfly episodes, this is their most vulnerable time as a being is when they like latch themselves onto a tree to dry their wings out. [1:13:06 – 1:13:13] Adam: And they have a hardening process to the little veins that act as the supports in the wing structure. [1:13:13 – 1:13:16] Adam: It takes a couple hours and then they’re able to fly. [1:13:17 – 1:13:23] Adam: And so we’re kind of watching because the number one predator right now would be a bird could come down here and snatch this poor guy up. [1:13:23 – 1:13:26] Adam: Well, we want him to stick around and help us out tonight. [1:13:26 – 1:13:30] Adam: So we’re kind of, we’re guarding this beautiful creature here on the red pine. [1:13:30 – 1:13:38] Erik: Yeah, and there has actually been not nearly as many of the songbirds as you usually get this time of year. [1:13:38 – 1:13:39] Erik: I haven’t heard a thrush. [1:13:41 – 1:13:44] Erik: There was a corvus in camp that was talking to us for a little bit. [1:13:44 – 1:13:47] Erik: He was going low occasionally. [1:13:47 – 1:13:49] Adam: We tried to give him a cheese curd, too. [1:13:49 – 1:13:49] Adam: He didn’t want it. [1:13:50 – 1:14:14] Erik: yeah just out here feeding the animals cheese who doesn’t like cheese everybody likes cheese except for snapping turtles and ravens apparently and small moth bass the bass turned it down too but the bluegills came over and and got it that bass is uh protecting its nest though out there so it’s got other problems to be concerning itself with right now there’s also a garter snake that lives in the fire great which is sweet that’s fine i’ll keep my distance [1:14:14 – 1:14:41] Adam: yeah it’s a pretty good size one too we just noticed that like at the very end but uh overall the fire grate itself as we’ve described last night is right at the edge of the water here by the fishing rock and the uh smith it’s not a smith it’s uh the new age foundry it’s set in here the wrong way which led me to believe last night that somebody had moved it and placed it here on their own the feet especially in the back have uh [1:14:42 – 1:14:49] Adam: some degradation to them, which suggests that it’s either just been here a long time or that somebody has messed with it in the recent past. [1:14:50 – 1:14:51] Adam: What do you think about this fire grate? [1:14:54 – 1:14:57] Erik: I do, yeah, I do like the proximity to the water. [1:14:57 – 1:15:04] Erik: I think mainly for the bugs, the reason, you know, that I wouldn’t want to be up in camp anymore. [1:15:04 – 1:15:05] Erik: So that’s great. [1:15:05 – 1:15:11] Erik: It kind of, you know, anytime a fire grate is anywhere, you just, because that’s where all the furniture gets built, it seems like where you spend the most time. [1:15:13 – 1:15:14] Erik: It’s like the kitchen of the camp, you know? [1:15:14 – 1:15:14] Adam: It is. [1:15:15 – 1:15:23] Adam: And, you know, part of the reason why we’re okay just hanging here today is because no matter which way the wind blows here, we’re going to get some kind of breeze on this point. [1:15:24 – 1:15:26] Adam: And so it’s just like a nice spot. [1:15:26 – 1:15:31] Adam: Our hammocks are set just like a couple paces from the water in both directions here from the fire grate. [1:15:31 – 1:15:31] Adam: Yeah. [1:15:32 – 1:15:38] Adam: Especially since the mosquitoes are kind of bad and the wind is light, you know, we want to take advantage of whatever little breeze we can get. [1:15:38 – 1:15:43] Adam: So the whole thing being right down here on the water and kind of open makes it attractive. [1:15:43 – 1:15:50] Adam: But also, like, we’re not going to find anything better than this in this section of the park as far as, like, openness to the breeze. [1:15:50 – 1:15:51] Erik: Right, that’s for sure. [1:15:51 – 1:15:53] Erik: And just based on… [1:15:54 – 1:15:58] Erik: How the bodies are feeling and how we felt getting in here last night. [1:15:58 – 1:16:04] Erik: And just finally, because we talk about it all the time, like, well, we like to just like chill and camp for a day. [1:16:04 – 1:16:05] Erik: Like, well, let’s go. [1:16:05 – 1:16:07] Erik: Let’s do 40 miles. [1:16:09 – 1:16:13] Erik: And yeah, it is, I would say, an above average campsite. [1:16:13 – 1:16:17] Erik: The fire grade itself is fine if you’re just like sitting back. [1:16:17 – 1:16:19] Erik: Sitting around a fire, maybe. [1:16:19 – 1:16:22] Erik: I don’t think this is a great site if you had, like, nine people, though. [1:16:23 – 1:16:24] Erik: It’s kind of tight. [1:16:24 – 1:16:28] Erik: Considering how out in the open it is, it is still, like, weirdly cramped. [1:16:29 – 1:16:33] Erik: It’s not the greatest for, like, getting in and out of for cooking purposes. [1:16:33 – 1:16:34] Erik: It’s, like, super hemmed in by rocks. [1:16:34 – 1:16:37] Erik: Like, that’s obviously things people have done to it. [1:16:37 – 1:16:41] Erik: But you only have, like, the… You have the… You know, it’s obviously… [1:16:41 – 1:16:42] Erik: It’s a rectangle. [1:16:42 – 1:16:46] Erik: And we only have access to, like, the narrow… One narrow end. [1:16:46 – 1:16:47] Erik: So… [1:16:47 – 1:16:49] Adam: Yeah, feeding it’s a little bit weird. [1:16:49 – 1:16:51] Adam: That’s why it’s set in there the wrong way. [1:16:51 – 1:16:55] Adam: When I say that, I just mean we’re working off the end cap and not the main middle piece, right? [1:16:55 – 1:16:56] Erik: I just heard him breathe again. [1:16:57 – 1:16:57] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I see him. [1:16:58 – 1:16:58] SPEAKER_01: There he is. [1:16:58 – 1:16:59] Erik: Hello. [1:17:00 – 1:17:00] UNKNOWN: God. [1:17:01 – 1:17:04] Adam: We’ll try and get down there with the microphone later and capture some of these breaths. [1:17:04 – 1:17:08] Adam: It’s more of a snapping turtle inhales. [1:17:10 – 1:17:14] Adam: Yeah, overall, though, I mean, the fire grate’s pretty unique and pretty neat here. [1:17:15 – 1:17:18] Adam: And, you know, we’re going to take advantage of whatever breeze we can get here. [1:17:19 – 1:17:22] Adam: And the hammock sets are impeccable on this site. [1:17:22 – 1:17:23] Erik: Oh, red pines for days. [1:17:23 – 1:17:32] Erik: These aren’t your big Sigurd Olsen, dreamy, breezy Lac La Croix jumbo red pines. [1:17:33 – 1:17:35] Erik: But they’re stout enough for hammocks. [1:17:35 – 1:17:36] Erik: They work perfectly fine. [1:17:36 – 1:17:37] Adam: There’s some half-huggers in here. [1:17:38 – 1:17:39] Adam: There’s some quarter-hugs. [1:17:40 – 1:17:42] Adam: That’s what I’m set on now. [1:17:42 – 1:17:43] Adam: So I moved my hammock. [1:17:43 – 1:17:44] Adam: I wasn’t totally happy with it. [1:17:45 – 1:17:51] Adam: I have old straps, and I was like a half-loop off on the set I picked last night in the dark. [1:17:52 – 1:17:53] Adam: That’s what you get for setting up in the dark. [1:17:53 – 1:17:58] Adam: So I moved over here to this bigger red pine, and there’s plenty of options. [1:17:58 – 1:18:03] Adam: There’s a couple decent tent pads in here if you wanted them. [1:18:03 – 1:18:12] Adam: And then when I was going up to the brown volcano this morning, there is another flat spot just up the hill that either could be a tent spot or a really neat one. [1:18:13 – 1:18:19] Adam: If you’re in here on a cold, windy night or something, that would be the spot to set your hammock on a get-out-of-the-breeze kind of day. [1:18:19 – 1:18:20] Erik: Yeah. [1:18:20 – 1:18:27] Erik: You don’t want to go up there for any reason but the Braun Volcano right now because it’s madness up there when it comes to the bugs. [1:18:28 – 1:18:35] Erik: And the number of times the latrine has been moved has got to be in the highest percentile that I’ve ever seen. [1:18:35 – 1:18:37] Erik: There’s at least four old holes up there. [1:18:38 – 1:18:39] Adam: Old holes. [1:18:39 – 1:18:40] Adam: Hashtag old holes. [1:18:41 – 1:18:42] Adam: Don’t do that. [1:18:42 – 1:18:43] Adam: Don’t search that hashtag. [1:18:43 – 1:18:44] Erik: Yeah, no, I wouldn’t suggest it. [1:18:45 – 1:18:48] Erik: And then the current volcano is almost to the brim. [1:18:48 – 1:18:50] Erik: We might have to start, like, hovering. [1:18:50 – 1:18:51] Erik: Got a lid, though. [1:18:51 – 1:18:52] Erik: It does have a lid. [1:18:52 – 1:18:54] Erik: It’s mildly broken, but it does have a lid. [1:18:55 – 1:19:00] Erik: And the fillings, the dirty fillings, are kind of creeping up towards the top. [1:19:00 – 1:19:01] Erik: It’s not a pit anymore. [1:19:02 – 1:19:07] Adam: No, I feel like this is probably a very, like, I don’t feel like this entry point is all that heavily used. [1:19:07 – 1:19:09] Adam: Three permits a day is what we’re told. [1:19:10 – 1:19:23] Adam: for crab and um we’ve seen some people in here today but i don’t feel like this quota is being met on most days of this lake and although this is probably the best campsite close to the portage we’re not going to really um [1:19:24 – 1:19:28] Adam: It didn’t appear to me just being down on the campsite that it was like that heavily used. [1:19:28 – 1:19:37] Adam: But yeah, when you see the Brown Volcano like history, you got your data points and your trackers up there on the Brown Volcano. [1:19:38 – 1:19:42] Adam: Clearly like a lot of people are visiting this Brown Volcano. [1:19:42 – 1:19:53] Erik: Yeah, the gravy history and the amount of stripped birch bark kind of suggests that more people are probably camping here than it really… [1:19:53 – 1:19:54] Erik: I don’t know. [1:19:54 – 1:19:58] Erik: It’s tough because it doesn’t feel super overused. [1:19:58 – 1:19:58] Adam: Right. [1:19:59 – 1:20:03] Erik: But it also seems like it has been. [1:20:03 – 1:20:16] Erik: Like, there’s definitely a massive cut tree right on the shore’s edge, but we were maybe pontificating that it was a Forest Service choice to cut it down because it kind of looked like it was, before it was cut, was like maybe leaning in a bad angle, but… [1:20:17 – 1:20:22] Adam: Yeah, it definitely had a lean, and if it was dead, you know, they would probably elect to take that one out. [1:20:22 – 1:20:25] Erik: But it’s also, like, still, like, a two-foot stump. [1:20:25 – 1:20:28] Erik: Would the Forest Service just leave, like, a big stump like that? [1:20:28 – 1:20:28] Erik: I don’t know. [1:20:29 – 1:20:33] Erik: Because it seems like a lot of work for somebody to take down a tree like that just on… For fun. [1:20:33 – 1:20:34] Erik: Just an afternoon in camp. [1:20:35 – 1:20:40] Erik: For, like, how much wood would you, like… That’s, like, a winter’s worth of wood to cut down a tree of that size. [1:20:40 – 1:20:41] Erik: It just never has made sense to me. [1:20:42 – 1:20:42] Erik: But… [1:20:43 – 1:20:44] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know. [1:20:44 – 1:20:46] Erik: The fire grate is kind of a toss-up. [1:20:46 – 1:20:56] Erik: It’s not super functional, but it is also unique, and you can’t deny the fact that it is, as the crow flies, like three feet away from the water. [1:20:57 – 1:20:59] Adam: Yeah, it’s pretty sweet in that respect. [1:21:00 – 1:21:08] Adam: It’s been a while since we really sat up late around the fire, so there’s obviously some sort of magical… Hey, friend. [1:21:10 – 1:21:11] Adam: There’s obviously some sort of… [1:21:13 – 1:21:26] Adam: magical powers to this odd fire grate that kept me up till one in the morning and plus one morning plus like been a long time since I’ve stayed up that late and I still felt I got up reasonably early I thought but [1:21:27 – 1:21:29] Adam: Maybe we slept in more than we thought. [1:21:29 – 1:21:29] Adam: I don’t know. [1:21:29 – 1:21:32] Adam: And that all kind of started the momentum of the day of, like, you know what? [1:21:32 – 1:21:34] Adam: Why don’t we just, like, do nothing today, really? [1:21:34 – 1:21:35] Adam: It would be great. [1:21:35 – 1:21:41] Adam: We’re going to fish, witness the wildlife that comes into this campsite through the course of the day, see the paddlers that go by. [1:21:41 – 1:21:43] Adam: We’ve had two groups go by us. [1:21:45 – 1:21:46] Adam: Um… [1:21:46 – 1:21:50] Erik: And that should probably be about it for the day unless there’s a late entry. [1:21:50 – 1:21:51] Erik: If three permits is the amount. [1:21:51 – 1:21:59] Adam: The people across the bay from us last night that we did see some lights over there at that campsite across from us kind of late last night. [1:22:00 – 1:22:07] Adam: I never did see them move unless they like paddled back past us or went out the other way like real early before I was up. [1:22:08 – 1:22:10] Adam: Maybe that’s a thing, or they might still be over there. [1:22:10 – 1:22:13] Adam: I’m not really sure how that campsite sits. [1:22:13 – 1:22:16] Adam: Where we saw the lights could have just been the backside of that campsite or something. [1:22:17 – 1:22:24] Adam: But, yeah, I mean, overall, the latrine is fine. [1:22:25 – 1:22:26] Adam: It’s a pretty nice latrine, actually. [1:22:26 – 1:22:29] Adam: It’s just one of the buggiest latrines I’ve ever seen. [1:22:29 – 1:22:31] Adam: The hammock and tent setup is nice. [1:22:32 – 1:22:33] Adam: The fire grate’s really nice. [1:22:33 – 1:22:36] Adam: The landing, also very nice. [1:22:36 – 1:22:38] Adam: And there’s a good fishing rock right here. [1:22:38 – 1:22:42] Adam: So, I mean, the marina section of this campsite, pretty good. [1:22:43 – 1:22:45] Adam: Overall, what do you think you’re going to give this campsite grade? [1:22:45 – 1:22:47] Adam: Are you prepared to grade it? [1:22:47 – 1:22:48] Erik: Yeah, I could just do an overall. [1:22:48 – 1:22:59] Erik: Sometimes we grade individual aspects, but as a whole, and this is after being here for whatever, not even a day. [1:23:01 – 1:23:02] Erik: We might stay here again. [1:23:02 – 1:23:02] Erik: Who knows? [1:23:02 – 1:23:03] Erik: It might be home the whole trip. [1:23:04 – 1:23:06] Erik: We’re going to go and do some kind of an adventure tomorrow. [1:23:06 – 1:23:08] Erik: It might involve moving a camp. [1:23:08 – 1:23:09] Erik: It might not. [1:23:09 – 1:23:12] Erik: But we are going to get our hands back on the paddles tomorrow. [1:23:12 – 1:23:14] Erik: But for now, I’m feeling like a B, maybe B+. [1:23:17 – 1:23:18] Adam: Yeah, that seems fair to me. [1:23:19 – 1:23:22] Adam: It’s definitely not the nicest site we’ve ever been on, but good enough. [1:23:22 – 1:23:27] Adam: And sometimes that’s all you need, you know, is the best site you can get in the spot you want it. [1:23:27 – 1:23:29] Adam: I think a B-plus is acceptable. [1:23:29 – 1:23:31] Adam: A lot of nice big red pine in here. [1:23:32 – 1:23:33] Adam: Some nice openings, you know. [1:23:34 – 1:23:37] Adam: Got Gordy parked up here on the pine needles. [1:23:38 – 1:23:40] Adam: And he’s looking great, you know. [1:23:40 – 1:23:41] Adam: Everybody’s having a good time out here. [1:23:43 – 1:23:47] Adam: So yeah, I don’t really see any reason to move or do anything really too strenuous today. [1:23:48 – 1:24:01] Erik: Yeah, I know a lot of times we do feel there’s a part of me that gets motivated by the fact that we are kind of out here recording what we’re doing to feel like, well, we got to go do something. [1:24:01 – 1:24:04] Erik: Why is anybody going to listen to this if we just sit and camp? [1:24:04 – 1:24:08] Erik: But at the same time, like, when’s the last time we’ve done this? [1:24:08 – 1:24:08] Erik: Cuetico? [1:24:08 – 1:24:09] Erik: And that was by force. [1:24:09 – 1:24:11] Adam: Have we ever just chilled at a campsite? [1:24:11 – 1:24:12] Adam: Because we couldn’t. [1:24:12 – 1:24:16] Adam: The only time I can remember that we ever just stayed in a campsite was because we couldn’t leave. [1:24:16 – 1:24:16] Erik: Right. [1:24:17 – 1:24:18] Erik: We were just trapped. [1:24:18 – 1:24:21] Adam: And that way, I think it’s probably some sort of milestone for us. [1:24:22 – 1:24:32] Adam: Sometimes it is hard to just actually sit back, relax, and do nothing when you’ve been primed your whole paddling career to just do as much as you can. [1:24:32 – 1:24:32] Erik: Yeah. [1:24:32 – 1:24:37] Adam: And we’re still going to get to see a lot of extra new water on top of this beautiful lake being new water for us. [1:24:37 – 1:24:38] Adam: Yeah. [1:24:38 – 1:25:00] Adam: yeah it’s just like it’s been over 10 years since we’ve just not gotten in the canoe in the boundary waters i drank like four cups of coffee today oh yeah there might even be another one there might even be a gd nap what the hell we might take a little nap this afternoon which would be something else so uh yeah however all i really like this spot i’m glad we’re here and yeah we’re primed to do something as far as moving around tomorrow but [1:25:01 – 1:25:10] Erik: We have to find a home for our leader and captain of warmongering Tricky Dick. [1:25:10 – 1:25:11] Erik: He’s got to find a home yet. [1:25:11 – 1:25:15] Erik: We might have to go out there and find a nice little cozy spot for him somewhere. [1:25:16 – 1:25:20] Adam: We will leave clues on that one, but we definitely won’t feed him to the snapping turtle. [1:25:20 – 1:25:22] Adam: That would be cruel and unusual. [1:25:22 – 1:25:23] Adam: To the snapping turtle? [1:25:23 – 1:25:25] Adam: Yeah, to the snapping turtle. [1:25:25 – 1:25:26] Adam: That would be really a dirty trick. [1:25:26 – 1:25:27] SPEAKER_01: Yeah. [1:25:28 – 1:25:30] Adam: It’s a real dick move, guys. [1:25:30 – 1:25:30] Adam: Yeah. [1:25:31 – 1:25:32] Adam: All right. [1:25:32 – 1:25:36] Adam: Well, I think that’s a good spot to leave this episode. [1:25:36 – 1:25:41] Adam: Thanks for being here on episode 222 of Tumble Home and Boundary Waters podcast. [1:25:42 – 1:26:08] Erik: oh my yeah it’s uh some wind picking up here i like it yeah i do too i’ve been in a hoodie all day like it’s definitely not like too hot and i do think we’re gonna see some sun here this afternoon but it has been mostly overcast today actually kind of surprised i thought maybe based on the forecast it was going to be uh getting kind of close to the zapper zone but i don’t know i’ve been comfortable all day a little bit of a breeze picks up right now that would just be perfect [1:26:08 – 1:26:11] Adam: Yeah, it’s kind of still blowing out of the same direction, it looks like. [1:26:11 – 1:26:13] Adam: Still kind of going straight east. [1:26:13 – 1:26:15] Adam: Blowing right in from Boathouse Lake. [1:26:15 – 1:26:21] Adam: Yeah, we are getting a little bit of the noise with that wind that you will get being this close to the entry, and we’re just going to choose to ignore it. [1:26:21 – 1:26:27] Adam: We thought like a whole troop of Boy Scouts was coming in here with aluminum boats this morning, and it turns out somebody was just working on their boathouse, I guess. [1:26:27 – 1:26:31] Erik: Adding an aluminum wing to their boathouse function. [1:26:31 – 1:26:32] Erik: Yeah. [1:26:32 – 1:26:34] Erik: The boathouse is just such an insane concept. [1:26:35 – 1:26:41] Erik: That’s got to be like peak money if you can afford building an enclosure above your dock right on the water. [1:26:42 – 1:26:48] Erik: It’s got to be a county by county thing because I know Cook County up at Clearwater, there’s no boathouses allowed. [1:26:48 – 1:26:50] Erik: You can’t build that close to the water. [1:26:50 – 1:26:55] Adam: You can maybe improve upon an existing footprint or something, but you’re definitely not putting in new boathouse construction there. [1:26:55 – 1:26:57] Erik: No, yeah, there was new, brand new. [1:26:57 – 1:26:59] Adam: Yesterday we saw one going in, like, fresh. [1:27:00 – 1:27:04] Adam: Looks like they’re going to put, like, a whole, like, billiards lounge on top of it or something. [1:27:04 – 1:27:07] Erik: Probably, at the very least, a cigar smoking studio. [1:27:07 – 1:27:08] Erik: Absolutely. [1:27:08 – 1:27:09] Erik: Yeah, it’s kind of crazy. [1:27:09 – 1:27:13] Erik: I think we bragged on it a little bit last night, but, yeah. [1:27:13 – 1:27:14] Erik: Still not over it, though. [1:27:14 – 1:27:17] Erik: The boathouse crossing last night, or yesterday afternoon, was just wild. [1:27:18 – 1:27:22] Erik: It was like, this is not, this doesn’t feel like anything that I am used to. [1:27:22 – 1:27:23] Erik: But… [1:27:24 – 1:27:26] Erik: We’re going to make a crossing back out in a couple of days, but… [1:27:27 – 1:27:31] Adam: I’m guessing the wind will switch back and push us the other way across the boat lake anyway, so… Yeah. [1:27:32 – 1:27:40] Adam: We’ll probably be sitting pretty, and, yeah, when, you know, when the wind’s going in your favor, you can just ride it, you know, see what happens. [1:27:40 – 1:27:50] Adam: But, yeah, the wind didn’t really do anything today, so that also made it really easy to sort of sit here and enjoy the beautiful silence and observe the nature that just is occurring naturally in this campsite. [1:27:51 – 1:27:53] Adam: Kind of neat to just do that, you know, but… [1:27:53 – 1:27:59] Erik: Yeah, I think that’s honestly, I think most people do this, I would say, more than others on Boundary Writers trips. [1:27:59 – 1:28:00] Erik: At least a day. [1:28:00 – 1:28:02] Adam: I need to do this more often, you know? [1:28:02 – 1:28:13] Erik: Yeah, I think the days of biting off more than we can chew and just still having to force ourselves to do it because we got ourselves into that situation are maybe mostly behind us. [1:28:13 – 1:28:17] Erik: I’m sure there’s going to be some big tripping days in our future still, but the day of… [1:28:19 – 1:28:47] Adam: taking easy taking it easy and enjoying where we are and actually like not having to worry about just doing all the things that go into moving a campsite i think those are probably more there’s gonna be more of those days in the future i have one more thing to report before the end of this episode i want to make sure i get this in here um this morning we have 30 seconds i was reading part two of dersu urzala which i honestly did try and finish in the last nine months and i was unable to [1:28:47 – 1:29:01] Adam: And so I was sitting there, you know, and I brought it on the trip, and I finished part two, and once again, Vladimir and Dersu have parted ways at the end of part two, but they made plans at least this time to meet back up, so I’m confident that they will because there’s a whole third part of the book. [1:29:02 – 1:29:07] Adam: They meet tigers in the second part, which is exciting, and I enjoyed seeing that. [1:29:08 – 1:29:08] Erik: What was the tiger’s name? [1:29:10 – 1:29:11] Adam: Uh… [1:29:11 – 1:29:12] Erik: Not Benji. [1:29:12 – 1:29:13] Adam: Not Benji. [1:29:13 – 1:29:14] Adam: It was like Amri. [1:29:15 – 1:29:15] Adam: Amri. [1:29:15 – 1:29:17] Adam: Amri is following us. [1:29:17 – 1:29:18] Erik: That was like Omut or something. [1:29:18 – 1:29:27] Adam: But my favorite part of part two is the tigers, of course, but also that Vladimir accidentally shoots Dersu. [1:29:28 – 1:29:28] UNKNOWN: Oh. [1:29:28 – 1:29:29] Adam: But he lives. [1:29:30 – 1:29:30] Erik: Spoiler. [1:29:31 – 1:29:36] Adam: But then he made Dersu apologize to him because that’s just how Vladimir rolls. [1:29:37 – 1:29:39] Adam: Sounds like somebody else we know. [1:29:40 – 1:29:41] Erik: I have a book that I brought, too. [1:29:41 – 1:29:43] Erik: I’m definitely hoping I’m getting into it. [1:29:44 – 1:29:54] Erik: It’s a real lighthearted World War III, post-apocalyptic, unimaginable nightmare of a book, it sounds like. [1:29:54 – 1:29:55] Erik: I’ve not started it yet. [1:29:55 – 1:29:58] Erik: It’s On the Beach by Neville Shute, so we’ll see how that one goes. [1:29:58 – 1:30:02] Adam: That’s awesome, and you were describing it to me, and that rang a bell, and I was like, that’s right. [1:30:02 – 1:30:16] Adam: That person I know, and I don’t know if you listen to this show, but the person, one person I know in my life that was all in on the horse paste thing being a solution to COVID was also somebody who recommended the beach to me. [1:30:16 – 1:30:17] Erik: On the beach. [1:30:17 – 1:30:18] Adam: On the beach. [1:30:19 – 1:30:19] Adam: Submarine crew. [1:30:20 – 1:30:24] Erik: Yeah, not to be confused with the Leonardo DiCaprio film from the early 2000s of the beach. [1:30:24 – 1:30:30] Adam: And that will be, it is on the whiteboard and will be done for Tummelholm Cinema Classics in the near future, I’m sure. [1:30:31 – 1:30:39] Adam: Probably the only other thing we’re going to record today while we sit here and eat beer nuts and mojito out of a bag is probably going to be a couple of Tummelholm Cinema Classics. [1:30:39 – 1:30:40] Adam: You all know the ones at this point. [1:30:43 – 1:30:45] Adam: A Simple Plan and Castaway. [1:30:45 – 1:30:47] SPEAKER_01: And Castaway, Billy Bob Thornton’s finest role. [1:30:48 – 1:30:49] Adam: Maybe so. [1:30:49 – 1:30:51] Adam: So that’s our plans for this afternoon. [1:30:51 – 1:30:53] Adam: If you’re a patron, you can check those out. [1:30:53 – 1:30:55] Adam: They’ll be posted when this episode is posted. [1:30:56 – 1:30:59] Adam: And we’ll catch you probably then tomorrow for episode 223. [1:30:59 – 1:31:00] Adam: For Tumbo. [1:31:00 – 1:31:01] Adam: For them. [1:31:02 – 1:31:04] Adam: Well, that’s how it usually goes. [1:31:04 – 1:31:06] Adam: But for us, it’s tomorrow, which is exciting. [1:31:09 – 1:31:11] Adam: I’m still wearing the same thing I was wearing yesterday. [1:31:11 – 1:31:12] Adam: So is Eric. [1:31:12 – 1:31:13] Adam: And this is Tumble Home. [1:31:13 – 1:31:14] Adam: We’re alive in the field. [1:31:14 – 1:31:15] Adam: Thank you for being here. [1:31:16 – 1:31:25] Adam: And we’re going to snack on some of these beer nuts and maybe get that slip bobber back out there, catch some more bass for our friend, the turtle. [1:31:25 – 1:31:29] Erik: I’m just going to sit down there with the field mic and try to time out getting one of his breaths recorded. [1:31:29 – 1:31:29] Erik: There we go. [1:31:29 – 1:31:30] Adam: All right. [1:31:30 – 1:31:31] Adam: Thank you, and good night. [1:31:52 – 1:32:06] SPEAKER_01: I’m drinkin’ hot drink, boulder rollin’ Bombay gin I’ll sleep when I’m dead Straight from the bar Twisted again I’ll sleep when I’m dead [1:32:19 – 1:32:20] SPEAKER_01: I won’t. [1:32:23 – 1:32:24] SPEAKER_01: I won’t. [1:32:24 – 1:32:25] SPEAKER_01: I won’t. [1:32:26 – 1:32:27] SPEAKER_01: I won’t. [1:32:27 – 1:32:27] SPEAKER_01: I won’t. [1:32:27 – 1:32:28] SPEAKER_01: I won’t. [1:32:28 – 1:32:28] SPEAKER_01: I won’t.
