Tumblehome is a design feature where the sides of a structure, such as a ship’s hull, canoe, or car, curve or taper inward as they go upward from the waterline or the widest point. This inward slope creates a narrower profile at the top.
Canoe and kayak paddlers, especially soloists, favor tumblehome because it brings the gunwales closer to the center of the boat. This allows you to keep your paddle much closer to the hull for a more vertical, efficient forward stroke.
