[0:00:04 – 0:00:25] Adam: welcome to tomahawk express we’re coming live from studio k we’re talking about bauer trout entry point today folks thanks for being here and thank you for supporting this proud independent podcast we’re not selling out and we’re giving you the straight dope on bauer trout lake and entry point today eric what do you think about bauer trout how many times have you used a bauer trout permit
[0:00:29 – 0:00:29] Adam: To enter?
[0:00:29 – 0:00:32] Adam: I think only once.
[0:00:32 – 0:00:33] Adam: I’ve got one.
[0:00:33 – 0:00:34] Adam: Yeah, I’ve got one under my belt.
[0:00:34 – 0:00:37] Erik: I think only once, and I think it was that guided trip I did.
[0:00:39 – 0:00:42] Adam: There is one permit a day for Bower Trout.
[0:00:42 – 0:00:45] Erik: Yeah, I have one entry permit a day on Bower Trout.
[0:00:45 – 0:00:49] Adam: So if you get it, you know you’re the only one going in there to do the boardwalk entry.
[0:00:50 – 0:00:51] Erik: Yeah, it does.
[0:00:52 – 0:00:59] Adam: It’s a weird one in that you kind of drive in off the Lima, and then there’s a parking area back in there just a bit.
[0:01:00 – 0:01:03] Erik: It’s, again, another pretty remote entry point.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:04] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:04 – 0:01:26] Erik: It’s on the, like, southeast, little southeast tail of the main unit of the Bowery Waters, accessible from off the Gunflint Trail via Grand Marais, also via the South Brule River Road would probably be the most direct non-paved road off the Gunflint to get here.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:33] Erik: But yeah, and then you turn off the Gunflint and South Brew River Road is pretty wide and nice.
[0:01:33 – 0:01:34] Erik: Yeah, it’s a nice road.
[0:01:34 – 0:01:35] Erik: Well marked.
[0:01:35 – 0:01:40] Erik: A little left on the Lima Grade, which is fine, but you’re not on that for very far.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:46] Erik: But then that turn down Bower Trout, it’s just like, gee, this is a single lane old pothole highway.
[0:01:47 – 0:01:51] Erik: It’s narrow in there and there’s room for like three vehicles to park.
[0:01:52 – 0:01:55] Erik: I can’t even imagine what that entry point parking lot would look like this year.
[0:01:55 – 0:01:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:56 – 0:01:58] Adam: They’re all up and down the road.
[0:01:58 – 0:01:59] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:59 – 0:02:03] Adam: And then once you start on your way in, it’s a portage into the lake.
[0:02:04 – 0:02:08] Adam: And then there’s, from what I remember, a lot of board, a lot of boardwalk.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:09] Erik: Lots of board.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:15] Erik: And I think you actually even end with like a little kind of like a dock thing.
[0:02:15 – 0:02:22] Adam: Yeah, there’s a little dock on that side, and then getting out of Bower Trout on the other end, there’s another little, like, pier almost.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:28] Erik: Yeah, I remember because that guided trip I did, they thought all of the landings were going to just come with little docks.
[0:02:28 – 0:02:30] Adam: They’re all going to be like this, Dodd?
[0:02:30 – 0:02:31] Adam: No.
[0:02:31 – 0:02:32] Adam: Don’t get used to this.
[0:02:33 – 0:03:02] Erik: um yeah so pampered the access to it um yeah it’s it’s i would say relatively remote still yeah it’s fine it’s not impossible to get to and it’s you know you’re right there you will be entering in so it’s kind of uh it could be a a last second weekend style trip drive up put in that like dusk get out to one of those sites highly unlikely all of them would be taken i think there’s three in the lake there are yeah there’s three
[0:03:02 – 0:03:04] Erik: None of them are really anything worth…
[0:03:05 – 0:03:09] Adam: They’re good for night ones because it doesn’t matter what kind of campsite you’re in on night one.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:12] Adam: You’re going to be jazzed and excited to be out.
[0:03:13 – 0:03:14] Adam: Especially that’s exactly what we did.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:18] Adam: My friend Chinwhisker Charles came up and did a trip.
[0:03:18 – 0:03:19] Adam: We went to Swan.
[0:03:20 – 0:03:22] Adam: And yeah, he was going to get up kind of late.
[0:03:22 – 0:03:23] Adam: And I think I had to work all day.
[0:03:24 – 0:03:28] Adam: And so then we just kind of like threw everything in the car and drove down there and entered pretty late.
[0:03:28 – 0:03:30] Adam: And then we just grabbed the one on…
[0:03:31 – 0:03:31] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:03:31 – 0:03:32] Adam: We should have a map up in front of us.
[0:03:32 – 0:03:33] Adam: But it was like…
[0:03:34 – 0:03:55] Adam: western southern shore sort of yeah there’s uh two on the lake actually two so yeah we went on the one that’s farther to the west i believe and i think both were open and we just grabbed that one because it looked fine and we got out and we had like plastic 40s with our dinner yeah which is uh pretty nice pretty nice pretty nice
[0:03:55 – 0:03:56] Adam: We were just living.
[0:03:56 – 0:04:00] Adam: We were excited because it was like, oh, it’s the first night of the trip, and we hadn’t seen each other in a long time.
[0:04:00 – 0:04:01] Adam: It was a buddy from down south.
[0:04:01 – 0:04:02] Adam: Good times.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:04] Adam: So, yeah, we had a real good time out there.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:06] Adam: It wouldn’t have mattered if we were just camping in a swamp.
[0:04:06 – 0:04:07] Adam: We would have had a fine time.
[0:04:07 – 0:04:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:08 – 0:04:11] Adam: But, yeah, neither of the campsites are anything special.
[0:04:11 – 0:04:19] Erik: Yeah, so neither of the sites on Bower Trout are really great, and neither is the, there’s one, if you, worst case scenario, somehow both sites on Bower Trout are taken.
[0:04:20 – 0:04:25] Erik: You can portage into Marshall, where you will find another campsite, which again is middling at best.
[0:04:25 – 0:04:26] Adam: Yeah, it’s not any better.
[0:04:27 – 0:04:29] Adam: Is that one like right on the portage almost?
[0:04:29 – 0:04:31] Erik: It’s like right adjacent to the portage, yeah.
[0:04:31 – 0:04:32] Adam: If I remember that.
[0:04:32 – 0:04:33] Adam: That one’s fine too.
[0:04:33 – 0:04:34] Adam: They’re all all right.
[0:04:34 – 0:04:36] Adam: You’re not going to, you know, you’ll be all right.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:36] Erik: Yeah.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:41] Erik: But so popularity of this entry point.
[0:04:42 – 0:04:43] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:43] Erik: Low.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:44] Erik: We need to get it.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:44] Erik: Yeah.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:48] Erik: Is there a medium scale that we are medium and low?
[0:04:48 – 0:04:49] Erik: I think just high, medium and low.
[0:04:49 – 0:04:51] Adam: This one’s pretty low popularity.
[0:04:51 – 0:05:06] Erik: yeah again it’s a green 2020 just don’t count it but like yeah most years i would say it’s low the this it’s a color thing so like green to red yeah green is less use yes blue to red
[0:05:07 – 0:05:10] Adam: Red is like never a permit available.
[0:05:10 – 0:05:11] Erik: Yeah.
[0:05:12 – 0:05:14] Adam: You gotta bribe somebody to get that permit.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:21] Erik: Yeah, I would put the Bower Trout entry point popularity in like the low to medium popularity.
[0:05:21 – 0:05:24] Erik: It’s hard to say with an entry point that only allows one a day to really tell.
[0:05:25 – 0:05:29] Erik: It’s like almost default low because it can’t really get busy.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:30] Erik: Yeah.
[0:05:30 – 0:05:34] Erik: But it’s a commonly taken one though too.
[0:05:36 – 0:05:36] Adam: Just because of
[0:05:37 – 0:05:59] Erik: the access that it allows you a string of lakes that you really can’t get to from any other entry point unless you get um you know a brule lake entry point which is you know getting into route options um off of bower trout is it’s impossible to do a loop
[0:05:59 – 0:06:01] Adam: Yeah, you really can’t get back to it.
[0:06:01 – 0:06:07] Adam: The only thing you could do is somehow loop all the way around and come out at Ram and then just walk the road back.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:10] Adam: It wouldn’t be that terrible of a walk back to Bower Trout from Ram.
[0:06:10 – 0:06:11] Erik: No, people do that.
[0:06:11 – 0:06:17] Adam: You could do a real convoluted loop up into Winchell eventually and then back out to Ram.
[0:06:17 – 0:06:17] Erik: Yeah.
[0:06:18 – 0:06:18] Adam: That would work.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:19] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:24] Erik: And that’s, um, you know, before we get too far into hardcore trip.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:06:25 – 0:06:36] Erik: But yeah, before we get too far into like the route options, just in terms of access popularity and how to get a canoe to and from, uh, any of your mid gun Flint trail outfitters will service this entry point.
[0:06:36 – 0:06:43] Erik: As far as I know, closest one, just like by as the way that crow flies, probably Rockwood.
[0:06:45 – 0:06:46] Adam: Maybe Hungry Jack.
[0:06:46 – 0:06:47] Adam: What about the B&B?
[0:06:47 – 0:06:48] Adam: Do they still rent a few canoes?
[0:06:48 – 0:06:52] Erik: I can’t speak to what they’ve got in terms of canoe rentals available.
[0:06:53 – 0:06:53] Adam: Poplar Creek.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:54] Adam: Yeah.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:55] Erik: Shout out.
[0:06:56 – 0:07:09] Erik: So this one, unless you’re doing the loop, unless you’re doing the out and back, this Bauer Trout entry point probably will involve a shuttle at some point, you know, based on what’s available in routing.
[0:07:09 – 0:07:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:11 – 0:07:32] Erik: um that might be a you know like in that bower trout out on poplar that’s where i would do it and then you got a couple options on how to get a ride back down the grade a few different places on poplar that we have discussed in the past check out the poplar lake episode yeah you can basically start at bower trout and then end your trip with a ice cold beer and a burger yeah and then get a ride
[0:07:33 – 0:07:36] Erik: Yeah, and then obviously if you’ve got multiple vehicles, drop one.
[0:07:37 – 0:07:38] Erik: Right, wherever you’re going.
[0:07:38 – 0:07:40] Erik: And add it, yeah.
[0:07:40 – 0:07:52] Erik: But otherwise, it is essentially an out and back kind of a situation, which in other cases, other places might be fine.
[0:07:53 – 0:08:07] Erik: This one’s probably not ideal just because of how rugged the portages are and what you have to contend with if you, like, say you’re going to enter in at Bower Trout, paddle to Brule, and then come back out at Bower Trout.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:19] Erik: I mean, you’re going to have to do that Swan Lake portage, which is like 300-plus rods, and then the Vernon Lake portage, which is like straight uphill into Brule, just to turn around and do it all again.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:21] Adam: It’s not as exciting to do the old in-and-out.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:22] Erik: It’s also…
[0:08:22 – 0:08:25] Erik: Yeah, there’s that whole dynamic of paddling the same lakes again.
[0:08:25 – 0:08:30] Adam: I mean, it all looks different going the other direction, sure, but it’s definitely not as exciting as a loop.
[0:08:30 – 0:08:34] Adam: And the section between like Marshall and Swan, there’s like this- It’s rough.
[0:08:35 – 0:08:38] Adam: Rough river section where you got to constantly be looking out for gougers.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:43] Erik: There’s huge gougers in there and I was not anticipating or prepared for that on that guided trip I was with.
[0:08:43 – 0:08:44] Adam: Oh, it’s bad.
[0:08:44 – 0:08:46] Adam: It’s some of the worst gouger terrain I’ve ever seen.
[0:08:46 – 0:08:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:47 – 0:08:48] Adam: And then they had to do that twice.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:52] Adam: So then you’re kind of like more on edge going through there the second time because-
[0:08:52 – 0:08:57] Adam: Sure, the first time through, you’re, you know, again, full of piss and vinegar and you’re ready to go.
[0:08:57 – 0:08:57] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:58 – 0:09:02] Adam: But then you’re coming back through and it’s like, I really don’t want to, like, you could straight up do some serious damage to your boat in there.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:05] Erik: Yeah, there’s some lurkers in there for sure.
[0:09:05 – 0:09:06] Adam: Some brown water lurkers.
[0:09:06 – 0:09:12] Adam: Yeah, no color on top at all, just straight dark death.
[0:09:12 – 0:09:15] Erik: Those portages through there, though, feel very Quetico-esque.
[0:09:15 – 0:09:18] Adam: Yeah, and then it’s just a lot of little portages in that river section.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:23] Adam: And then just getting to Swan, I remember it being way harder than I had anticipated.
[0:09:24 – 0:09:26] Adam: We were only doing Swan and back, and we had to do that.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:36] Adam: That wasn’t that bad, really, but we packed heavy because it was like, well, it’s a short little run in and out, and we’re just going to plan on getting in there and fishing a bunch, which worked out fine.
[0:09:36 – 0:09:39] Adam: But, I mean, it was, like I said, way tougher than anticipated.
[0:09:39 – 0:09:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:09:40 – 0:09:46] Erik: And Swan, I think, underappreciated gem of that section of the Boundary Waters.
[0:09:46 – 0:09:48] Erik: That is… Yeah, that was a sweet lake.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:50] Erik: Two amazing campsites on it.
[0:09:50 – 0:09:52] Erik: It’s got incredible fishing.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:53] Adam: Absolutely great.
[0:09:54 – 0:09:56] Erik: It’s in the middle of nowhere for how…
[0:09:57 – 0:09:59] Erik: like, quote-unquote, accessible, it is.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:11] Erik: It’s a wild lake, and if you’re just going out to go to Swan and back, I think if you push it any farther past Swan, you’re turning it into a loop situation.
[0:10:12 – 0:10:19] Adam: Yeah, there’s really a great trip, and we had really good fishing in Swan, and just generally had a really good trip in there.
[0:10:20 – 0:10:22] Adam: I would highly recommend just doing that.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:25] Adam: Bower trout to Swan, stay on Swan, and then come back.
[0:10:25 – 0:10:29] Erik: Yeah, weekend trip, just two nights, head out to Swan, even if you get out late that first night.
[0:10:29 – 0:10:31] Adam: We did it, yeah, first night late on Bower Trout.
[0:10:31 – 0:10:38] Adam: Got up early and pushed her into Swan, like fished all day and then fished a little the next morning and came back and that was all we did.
[0:10:39 – 0:10:39] Adam: Two nights.
[0:10:39 – 0:10:45] Erik: Wasn’t Swan the Lake where your buddy picked up a walleye like midday with like a spoon and you were just shocked?
[0:10:46 – 0:10:56] Adam: He was shooting like a double cowbell, like spinner on like with like a bait caster, like 1230, you know, high noon, basically in a sunny day.
[0:10:57 – 0:10:58] Erik: You didn’t believe him when he said it was a walleye?
[0:10:58 – 0:10:58] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:59 – 0:11:00] Adam: He hooked this walleye.
[0:11:00 – 0:11:01] Adam: He’s like, it’s a nice walleye.
[0:11:01 – 0:11:03] Adam: I go, no, it’s not.
[0:11:04 – 0:11:05] Adam: Holy, holy heck it is.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:08] Adam: Like we even had a net with us and everything.
[0:11:08 – 0:11:10] Adam: And so, yeah, it was a beautiful fish.
[0:11:10 – 0:11:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:12] Adam: Fish of the trip for sure.
[0:11:12 – 0:11:15] Adam: And yeah, but really funny that it just came in the middle of the day.
[0:11:16 – 0:11:22] Adam: Sometimes like I’ve seen a lot of big walleyes that just get caught in the complete opposite time you’d think you’d catch a big walleye.
[0:11:22 – 0:11:24] Erik: Randomly in the middle of the day.
[0:11:24 – 0:11:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:11:24 – 0:11:26] Adam: You’re not catching like a 15 inch walleye at noon.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:27] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:29] Adam: If you catch a walleye at noon, it’s going to be plus 20.
[0:11:30 – 0:11:31] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:11:31 – 0:11:33] Erik: I mean, that’s at least my experience too.
[0:11:33 – 0:11:44] Erik: Yeah, I think if you’re working with more than two nights, you can do the out to Brule as your turn and then either up through grassy
[0:11:46 – 0:11:52] Erik: or all the way over to the cones, and then back through Winchell, and then exit via Ram.
[0:11:54 – 0:12:04] Erik: That would be a pretty boss trip, but I would say four nights at least you’d want to give yourself for that, unless… You could do it in three nights, but all you’re doing is getting up and moving every day.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:13] Erik: And you’re probably going to be pretty worn down by the end of it, because the portages in the middle of that trip, probably…
[0:12:14 – 0:12:37] Erik: fine but both the getting in at bower trout and at ram there that’s that’s some rough terrain in there so um but really like logistically distance wise exiting at ram to walk back to bower trout it’s probably maybe in 45 minutes maybe an hour walk if yeah road walking is never fun after a trip
[0:12:37 – 0:13:00] Adam: yeah it’s a little anticlimactic to end and then have to walk all the way back i think the way to do it would be like drop all your stuff in the bower trout parking lot then like go drop the car off and walk down and grab your gear yeah do the walk to start and so you have already like placed your car there yeah that would again not the way you really want to start a trip but at least you’re you don’t have to end it that way then right or or uh leave a bike
[0:13:01 – 0:13:03] Adam: Oh, yeah, the old bike drop.
[0:13:03 – 0:13:03] Adam: The old bike drop.
[0:13:03 – 0:13:04] Adam: That would work.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:04] Erik: Yeah.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:06] Adam: Stealth bike moves.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:11] Erik: Yeah, did that on the second trip I ever took on the Granite River.
[0:13:14 – 0:13:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:14 – 0:13:16] Adam: Yeah, I have a pro tip.
[0:13:16 – 0:13:19] Adam: I have a pro tip, and don’t wait.
[0:13:19 – 0:13:20] Adam: Are we not to pro tips yet?
[0:13:20 – 0:13:23] Erik: Well, I was just going to ask you, what the hell is Bauer Trout?
[0:13:23 – 0:13:25] Adam: Yeah, there’s not trout in it.
[0:13:25 – 0:13:26] Erik: What does the name mean?
[0:13:26 – 0:13:27] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:29] Adam: It’s a goofy named lake for sure.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:31] Adam: One of the goofiest named lakes I’ve seen.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:34] Erik: Yeah, it’s B-O-W-E-R.
[0:13:34 – 0:13:39] Erik: I’ve seen on one old map, just one, where it was lower trout.
[0:13:40 – 0:13:45] Erik: I’m just, maybe, maybe there’s a chance that, like, it got, like, misnamed.
[0:13:45 – 0:13:53] Adam: Isn’t Bauer and Sheepshead, like, the other, you know, the, you know, it’s not your, you know, the queen of clubs.
[0:13:53 – 0:13:55] Adam: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[0:13:55 – 0:13:57] Adam: I think it’s, like, an off Trump.
[0:13:57 – 0:13:58] Adam: Yes.
[0:13:58 – 0:13:59] Adam: It’s like a self-trump.
[0:13:59 – 0:14:00] Erik: It’s the Bauer.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:02] Adam: It’s the Jack.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:08] Adam: I’m sorry to everybody in eastern Wisconsin right now listening who is screaming at their device.
[0:14:09 – 0:14:12] Adam: As I butcher the rules, I could not play Sheepshead ever.
[0:14:13 – 0:14:32] Adam: no and i certainly won’t play it now so i can’t do it i’m pretty sure bauer is involved in games like sheep’s head or um i think it’s sheep’s head but it might be the other one that’s like sheep’s head though oh god euchre i don’t think it’s a euchre if i haven’t learned how to play euchre yet i’m like i’m not gonna all i remember from playing sheep’s head at christmas and like
[0:14:32 – 0:14:38] Adam: Basically, it’s Grandpa just calling out at the cards as I’m playing them what I should play.
[0:14:38 – 0:14:39] Adam: He doesn’t know, but he knows.
[0:14:39 – 0:14:41] Erik: Yeah, he’s played luck thousands of times.
[0:14:41 – 0:14:42] Adam: You have to play the Bauer now.
[0:14:43 – 0:14:44] Adam: Something like that.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:45] Adam: That’s my memory on Bowers.
[0:14:45 – 0:14:48] Adam: So yeah, I think it’s a lower denominator.
[0:14:49 – 0:14:50] Erik: But that’s still like…
[0:14:51 – 0:14:54] Adam: I could see it being called Little Brule or something, too.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:58] Adam: Because it’s all part of the Brule River system, basically, coming out of Brule down there.
[0:14:58 – 0:15:02] Erik: Yeah, it’s like four or five lakes removed from the headwaters of the Brule River.
[0:15:02 – 0:15:05] Adam: It must have had trout in it at some point, but it does not currently have trout.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:08] Adam: But he caught a really nice smallmouth in there, too.
[0:15:09 – 0:15:10] Erik: It’s mostly smallies in any of the lakes.
[0:15:11 – 0:15:13] Adam: Yeah, it’s a really, like, really nice smallie.
[0:15:13 – 0:15:15] Erik: Until you get up into Swan, I think.
[0:15:15 – 0:15:18] Adam: Yeah, right where the river comes in to Bower Trout.
[0:15:18 – 0:15:26] Adam: We were fishing that, you know, inlet there right before we portaged out that next morning, and he just slammed this, like, ridiculous 20-plus-inch smallmouth.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:27] Erik: Nice.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:37] Erik: It’s probably filled with suckers, too, because I know that the bridge where the Brule River goes under in the spring, you can go and just throw rocks at them.
[0:15:37 – 0:15:38] Erik: They’re just packed on the surface, those suckers.
[0:15:38 – 0:15:41] Adam: Just grab handfuls of them for fertilizer for your pumpkin patch.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:45] Erik: Yep, or dog food for your dog.
[0:15:45 – 0:15:46] Erik: You got a pro tip, it sounds like.
[0:15:47 – 0:15:51] Adam: Pro tip is if you do make it to Swan Lake, do not be afraid to throw musky lures.
[0:15:52 – 0:15:52] Adam: Midday.
[0:15:52 – 0:15:54] Adam: Middle of the day, any time of the day.
[0:15:54 – 0:15:59] Adam: But Trevor was unafraid, and he was rewarded.
[0:15:59 – 0:16:00] Adam: So that’s the pro tip.
[0:16:01 – 0:16:01] Adam: Pro tip.
[0:16:02 – 0:16:19] Adam: uh yeah i guess i don’t know uh pro tip is good pike in there too i’m just you know he happened to hilariously catch a walleye on a spinner like a big bucktail double bladed bucktail but uh you know we did have some really nice pike action in there too same lure same lure what time of year was that
[0:16:20 – 0:16:37] Adam: that was a like late june trip that was the one where you went in with the yeti and like had to dump we had the yeti full of ice that we hauled in all the way in there like filled with ice and plastic 40s of like you know high life or whatever he brought from milwaukee yeah and then yeah at the end of the trip like had so much ice left we just dumped the ice out
[0:16:39 – 0:16:42] Erik: That was at the beginning of the Yeti cooler days.
[0:16:42 – 0:16:42] Adam: It was.
[0:16:42 – 0:16:45] Adam: He was the first person I knew to have a Yeti cooler.
[0:16:45 – 0:16:47] Adam: He’s an early adopter of all great tech.
[0:16:48 – 0:16:51] Adam: If you want to know what’s coming up in the camping world, he has Chinwhisker Charles.
[0:16:52 – 0:16:52] Adam: Shout out.
[0:16:53 – 0:16:56] Erik: Is he the guy that you got the camp chair from?
[0:16:56 – 0:17:00] Adam: Yeah, my first high-tech camp chair.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:01] Erik: Yeah, the high-tech camp chair.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:03] Erik: He was ahead of the curve on that one, too.
[0:17:03 – 0:17:05] Adam: He’s always ahead of the curve.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:32] Erik: my pro tip I guess I’ll just do a vague two pro tips take your time on the portages between Bower Trout and Swan because they’re they’re about as rough as some of those inter those in between lakes rock wise yeah some real snappers in there they’re a doozy if you’re just with regular packs they’re really a doozy if you’re trying to like two person carry a massive Yeti cooler let me tell you yeah
[0:17:34 – 0:17:38] Adam: So, yeah, they are a challenge, like I said, much more difficult than I was anticipating.
[0:17:39 – 0:17:43] Erik: Yeah, and then Dark Horse, Walleye Lakes, Swan, and Vernon, both.
[0:17:43 – 0:17:45] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[0:17:45 – 0:17:50] Erik: That first day on that guided trip I did, we were just like, I kind of was just like, eh, let’s just go out and troll.
[0:17:51 – 0:17:55] Erik: I don’t really have much hopes for anything here, just threw some X-Wraps on and…
[0:17:55 – 0:18:07] Erik: around the big island on Vernon, like within an hour caught a, uh, an eater, like a big eater for three people, walleye and like a, like 30 plus inch pike.
[0:18:07 – 0:18:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:08 – 0:18:10] Erik: And that was like within an hour of just fishing.
[0:18:10 – 0:18:11] Erik: And it wasn’t even a fishing trip.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:12] Erik: It was kind of just a,
[0:18:13 – 0:18:20] Adam: We had heard really good things about swan fishing and, you know, he was basically coming up like, let’s just go somewhere and fish for a whole day, you know?
[0:18:20 – 0:18:23] Adam: And I was like, all right, this is the spot I’ve heard a lot of good things about.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:27] Adam: And that’s always a great feeling when like a buddy comes up a long drive.
[0:18:27 – 0:18:27] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:28] Adam: Do a trip.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:34] Adam: And then, you know, especially since he caught the big walleye, it was like, just don’t mess up the net job, baby.
[0:18:34 – 0:18:35] Adam: Get this thing in there.
[0:18:36 – 0:18:37] Adam: We got some nice pictures.
[0:18:38 – 0:18:41] Adam: Yeah, and the funny story about me being like, no, it’s not a wall.
[0:18:41 – 0:18:42] Erik: It is a wall.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:42] Erik: Get the net.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:44] Erik: Get the net.
[0:18:45 – 0:18:45] Adam: It still gets me charged up.
[0:18:45 – 0:18:49] Adam: That was a long time ago now, and still every time I remember that day.
[0:18:49 – 0:18:49] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:49 – 0:18:52] Adam: It always gives the goosebumps a bit.
[0:18:54 – 0:18:56] Adam: That’ll wrap it up for Tumble Home Express.
[0:18:58 – 0:18:59] Adam: Bauer Trout edition.
[0:18:59 – 0:19:06] Adam: Thanks for being with us here in Studio K. If you have any questions on Bauer Trout, just call Eric up.
[0:19:07 – 0:19:08] Adam: Here’s his phone number.

[0:19:13 – 0:19:16] Adam: He’s always answering the phone and wants to talk all the time.
[0:19:16 – 0:19:20] Erik: You know where to find us, but just don’t find me for a little bit.
[0:19:20 – 0:19:22] Adam: It’s kind of my break time.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:23] Erik: Thanks.
