[1:12:24 – 1:12:30] SPEAKER_03: Paddling until arms ache, back hurts, skin is burned, legs are cramped, and butt falls asleep.
[1:12:31 – 1:12:36] SPEAKER_03: Finally, a portage and a chance to stop paddling, stretch legs, and get out of the sun.
[1:12:38 – 1:12:43] SPEAKER_03: Also a chance to deal with black flies, deer flies, and various other versions of evil incarnate.
[1:12:44 – 1:12:53] SPEAKER_03: A chance to climb up and down hills with loads that would crush a burrow, that strain neck, back, and hamstrings, and threaten to drive shoulder blades through hips.

[1:14:14 – 1:14:18] SPEAKER_03: and drink in a warm and happy trance of pure bliss and satisfaction.
[1:14:19 – 1:14:22] SPEAKER_03: This lasts some moments.
[1:14:22 – 1:14:33] SPEAKER_03: With the arrival of the evening watch of mosquitoes, the cooking gear is up gathered and washed, the food repacked, the pack hoisted and hung safe from bears, mini bears, a.k.a.

[1:14:36 – 1:14:36] SPEAKER_03: mice,
[1:14:37 – 1:14:39] SPEAKER_03: Personal hygiene is attended to.

[1:14:40 – 1:14:44] SPEAKER_03: Tent-invading mosquitoes dispatched, except for three which are never found.
[1:14:45 – 1:14:49] SPEAKER_03: The sleeping bag snuggled into, and finally, sleep.
[1:14:50 – 1:14:57] SPEAKER_03: The sweet, dark, wonderful nothingness of rock, root, pinecone.
[1:14:59 – 1:15:04] SPEAKER_03: These are nemesises that will be there, along with three renegade mosquitoes, all through the night.
[1:15:05 – 1:15:18] SPEAKER_03: They will become intimate with black sides and stomach, with muscles, bones, and insides, and loom ever larger and sharper and more offensive in the imagination and the anatomy until dawn cannot come too soon.
[1:15:19 – 1:15:31] SPEAKER_03: And with the arrival of dawn, the pack is lowered, many bears found it anyway, breakfast cooked, dishes cleaned, tent taken down, the canoe loaded, and back to paddling once more.

[1:18:17 – 1:18:18] SPEAKER_03: Where did I get my start?
[1:18:18 – 1:18:19] SPEAKER_03: What do you mean, where did I get my start?
[1:18:21 – 1:18:23] SPEAKER_03: Alright, man.
[1:18:24 – 1:18:31] SPEAKER_03: So I first came to the Boundary Waters in 2016, May 23rd, 2016 to be exact.
[1:18:34 – 1:18:42] SPEAKER_03: As a wee little gal from Tennessee, I grew up doing some light whitewater canoeing with my dad.
[1:18:43 – 1:18:47] SPEAKER_03: And so we knew about the Boundary Waters, but didn’t necessarily know exactly what it was, but…
[1:18:48 – 1:18:53] SPEAKER_03: My dad surprised me right after my freshman year of college with a trip to come up here.
[1:18:53 – 1:19:01] SPEAKER_03: And so we packed the car with my dad, my stepmom, and my aunt and uncle, and our dog, Ava.
[1:19:02 – 1:19:07] SPEAKER_03: And we came up, went out of Seagull Canoe Outfitters onto Seagull Lake.
[1:19:07 – 1:19:10] SPEAKER_03: We were going to go out, I think we had planned for four or five days.
[1:19:11 – 1:19:15] SPEAKER_03: We were only out for like two or three nights.
[1:19:15 – 1:19:17] SPEAKER_03: As it will, the weather…
[1:19:17 – 1:19:19] SPEAKER_03: Really took its toll.
[1:19:19 – 1:19:21] SPEAKER_03: It was nice and windy on the first day.
[1:19:21 – 1:19:29] SPEAKER_03: And so we went to the north landing just off Trails End to enter Seagull to avoid some of the wind on the big water.
[1:19:29 – 1:19:36] SPEAKER_03: And my uncle and I were in a 3P canoe and got through the chute, if you know what the chute is.
[1:19:37 – 1:19:45] SPEAKER_03: It’s a narrow bit of land with water rushing through it that goes north up the Seagull River into Sag.
[1:19:45 – 1:19:47] SPEAKER_03: And you’ve got to really push hard through it.
[1:19:47 – 1:19:51] SPEAKER_03: But my dad and my stepmom and dog Ava didn’t get so lucky.
[1:19:52 – 1:19:53] SPEAKER_03: And they flipped the canoe.
[1:19:53 – 1:19:57] SPEAKER_03: And we all know that water was extremely cold on May 23rd.
[1:19:57 – 1:19:57] SPEAKER_03: And…
[1:20:00 – 1:20:07] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so we got through that, camped on that first little spot just inside the Boundary Waters line before you get to the Palisades.
[1:20:09 – 1:20:10] SPEAKER_03: Caught some bass.
[1:20:11 – 1:20:12] SPEAKER_03: Had a good time.
[1:20:12 – 1:20:12] SPEAKER_03: Felt better.
[1:20:13 – 1:20:16] SPEAKER_03: Made it to Alpine the next day.
[1:20:16 – 1:20:23] SPEAKER_03: And that through highway of a portage felt like hell on earth because my dad packed so much stuff.
[1:20:24 – 1:20:25] SPEAKER_03: It took so long to get across.
[1:20:25 – 1:20:28] SPEAKER_03: It was so painful in all the ways.
[1:20:28 – 1:20:30] SPEAKER_03: And then we got into Alpine.
[1:20:30 – 1:20:34] SPEAKER_03: We got one of the last sites at the very, very back of the lake.
[1:20:35 – 1:20:39] SPEAKER_03: And then a big old wall cloud came in and we just watched it roll over.
[1:20:40 – 1:20:42] SPEAKER_03: And yeah, it torrentially downpoured.
[1:20:43 – 1:20:48] SPEAKER_03: My aunt and uncle’s tent got soaked and they came and got in the tent with us.
[1:20:49 – 1:20:49] SPEAKER_03: So that was a great time.
[1:20:49 – 1:20:52] SPEAKER_03: We came off the water the next day as fast as possible.
[1:20:53 – 1:20:57] SPEAKER_03: And when I came off the water, nothing out of the ordinary.
[1:20:58 – 1:21:01] SPEAKER_03: We just said, thanks, great, we’re going to head back to Tennessee.
[1:21:02 – 1:21:06] SPEAKER_03: And on our way back, my dad got a phone call from the owner of the outfitter.
[1:21:07 – 1:21:11] SPEAKER_03: And she was like, oh, sorry, didn’t mean to call you.
[1:21:11 – 1:21:18] SPEAKER_03: And my dad, being who he is, was like, oh, what would it take for my daughter to work up there next year?
[1:21:18 – 1:21:19] SPEAKER_03: Can she apply?
[1:21:20 – 1:21:20] SPEAKER_03: How does that work?
[1:21:21 – 1:21:22] SPEAKER_03: And she said, well, does she want to come back this year?
[1:21:23 – 1:21:27] SPEAKER_03: And my dad said, oh, let me talk to her.
[1:21:27 – 1:21:28] SPEAKER_03: Give her 24 hours.
[1:21:28 – 1:21:30] SPEAKER_03: She’ll call you in the morning.
[1:21:30 – 1:21:31] SPEAKER_03: So not even 24 hours.
[1:21:31 – 1:21:31] SPEAKER_03: And
[1:21:35 – 1:21:39] SPEAKER_03: I talked it over and told my mom.
[1:21:39 – 1:21:40] SPEAKER_03: She wasn’t happy about that, didn’t want me to go.
[1:21:40 – 1:21:43] SPEAKER_03: But my dad was like, you need to take this opportunity.
[1:21:43 – 1:21:44] SPEAKER_03: And I was itching to do it.
[1:21:45 – 1:21:47] SPEAKER_03: So I said yes, packed my stuff.
[1:21:47 – 1:22:00] SPEAKER_03: And a few days later, turned around, left Tennessee and made that arduous 17-hour drive all the way back up to the top of the Gunflint Trail and spent my first summer at Segal Outfitters.
[1:22:00 – 1:22:01] SPEAKER_03: And then I would spend…
[1:22:02 – 1:22:11] SPEAKER_03: That summer as well, this is the next two summers, 2017 and 2018, between college semesters, yeah, up in the Boundary Waters.
[1:22:11 – 1:22:20] SPEAKER_03: And made a lot of great friends and people that I’d call family and memories and learned a lot and grew up and finished college.
[1:22:20 – 1:22:27] SPEAKER_03: And right after I graduated, I spent my last summer in Tennessee and moved up here full time.
[1:22:27 – 1:22:30] SPEAKER_03: And worked on the trail again around mid-trail and…
[1:22:32 – 1:22:41] SPEAKER_03: figured it all out, came back towards Grand Marais in the Lutzen area and got my start and we are going on year 10 here now.

[1:22:50 – 1:22:59] SPEAKER_03: I got my wife, my dogs and my house and man, an amazing community of folks who also love the Boundary Waters and the Big Lake.

[1:24:13 – 1:24:24] SPEAKER_04: I offered Tori a tarp to wrap around her body and she said, no, she said, Oh, I’ll be so warm in my zero degree bag in my really thick, uh, sleeping pad.

[1:24:29 – 1:24:30] SPEAKER_04: And then I started brushing my teeth.
[1:24:31 – 1:24:31] SPEAKER_04: And then here we are.
