[0:00:45 – 0:01:09] Folk Music: If you’re traveling in the North Country fire Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true lover of mine
[0:01:17 – 0:01:29] Erik: Welcome to Tumble Home episode 202.
[0:01:32 – 0:01:33] Erik: We are in the field.
[0:01:33 – 0:01:35] Adam: Thunder in the distance.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:46] Erik: My name is Eric, joined as always and forever shall be with my fine friend and paddling partner, Adam.
[0:01:48 – 0:01:48] Erik: Hello, Eric.
[0:01:49 – 0:01:53] Bob: We’re here at the entry point with our friend Bob as well.
[0:01:55 – 0:01:56] Erik: What a shame.
[0:01:56 – 0:01:57] Adam: And the skeets.
[0:01:57 – 0:01:58] Erik: And the skeets.
[0:01:59 – 0:02:02] Erik: 202, I believe, 202 episodes plus.
[0:02:03 – 0:02:10] Erik: It has taken us to get to our good friend Robert Zimmerman on the mic.
[0:02:11 – 0:02:12] Erik: It might be our final downfall.
[0:02:12 – 0:02:14] Erik: We will finally get copyrighted.
[0:02:16 – 0:02:18] Adam: That’s what’s going to get us.
[0:02:19 – 0:02:21] Adam: It’s actually our 200th episode together, I believe, as well.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:31] Adam: So saved a special one for this in-the-field audio coming to you here on Tumble Home Sports Network.
[0:02:33 – 0:02:34] Erik: Sports Network in the field.
[0:02:34 – 0:02:35] Erik: Thank you all for listening.
[0:02:36 – 0:02:39] Erik: And, boy, it’s been – we were doing the math on the way up.
[0:02:40 – 0:02:44] Erik: I feel we came to the conclusion it’s been over a year.
[0:02:59 – 0:03:03] Erik: That’s our derelict attorney on the mic.
[0:03:03 – 0:03:04] Adam: On the mouth harp.
[0:03:04 – 0:03:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:05 – 0:03:09] Adam: Derelict attorney on the field audio mouth harp.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:13] Adam: Yeah, been over a year since we’ve been in the field, at least on an overnight together.
[0:03:13 – 0:03:21] Adam: A lot of good field audio out there, but, you know, it’s been all the way since we left Ensign.
[0:03:22 – 0:03:29] Adam: And our good friends at Hall & Oates Outfitters on Moose that we’ve been back in the field together with a canoe at least.
[0:03:29 – 0:03:30] Erik: Yeah, overnight with a canoe.
[0:03:30 – 0:03:31] Erik: It is the plan.
[0:03:32 – 0:03:39] Erik: And if you can’t tell by the episode title and or the description, it is a final assault on Davis.
[0:03:40 – 0:03:41] Erik: It’s happening.
[0:03:42 – 0:03:46] Adam: Yeah, one of the only lakes out there that Eric and I have never been to.
[0:03:47 – 0:03:50] Adam: In this sector, at least, on the F-13.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:52] Adam: So we both have an F-13, and…
[0:03:54 – 0:03:55] Adam: We’re heading to Davis.
[0:03:55 – 0:03:56] Adam: It’s a long run.
[0:03:56 – 0:03:57] Adam: I don’t think we’re going to make it tonight.
[0:03:58 – 0:04:00] Adam: We’re kind of getting after it a little late.
[0:04:00 – 0:04:02] Adam: We both had to work today.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:03] Adam: Boo hoo.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:04] Adam: Well, we’re here now.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:05] Adam: It’s raining.
[0:04:06 – 0:04:08] Adam: And we have our Bob Dylan going.
[0:04:08 – 0:04:15] Adam: And we also have some good art supplies here we’re going to have to get into before we head out into the park.
[0:04:16 – 0:04:19] Adam: Eric, what do we have with us here on the bumper of the Vibe?
[0:04:19 – 0:04:21] Erik: Ooh, who knows?
[0:04:22 – 0:04:23] Erik: These could be years old.
[0:04:23 – 0:04:24] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:04:24 – 0:04:28] Erik: But it does say that it is correctly spelled Eric and Adam.
[0:04:29 – 0:04:40] Erik: I couldn’t fit a full set of art supplies in my suitcase from Colorado, but I could fit two of my favorites for you to try.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:42] Erik: This is from Andrew.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:44] Erik: Surveyor909.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:46] Erik: There you go.
[0:04:46 – 0:04:46] Erik: P.S.,
[0:04:50 – 0:04:51] Erik: We will be getting into these.
[0:04:53 – 0:04:56] Erik: I included your favorite mouth mixers.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:01] Erik: Just in case.
[0:05:02 – 0:05:04] Adam: You can play this to Bob Dylan.
[0:05:04 – 0:05:06] Adam: I think he does use some oatmeal packets.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:08] Adam: Just for percussion purposes?
[0:05:08 – 0:05:10] Erik: Definitely on 27 and 9, I’m freewheeling.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:13] Erik: Somebody’s got to remix that track.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:15] Erik: Re-mouth mix it.
[0:05:15 – 0:05:18] Erik: The oatmeal packets are just too loud.
[0:05:19 – 0:05:21] Erik: We’ve got some… Yeah, level 8 those packs.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:23] Erik: Level 8 those mouth mixing packs.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:28] Erik: Station 26 Brewing Co. Bang, bang, double IPA.
[0:05:28 – 0:05:30] Erik: Drink me now.
[0:05:30 – 0:05:30] Erik: Will do.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:35] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:37] Erik: Cheers, my good man.
[0:05:37 – 0:05:37] Erik: Cheers, hombre.
[0:05:37 – 0:05:38] Erik: Feels good to be out here.
[0:05:39 – 0:05:39] Adam: Garty’s here.
[0:05:40 – 0:05:40] Adam: Shout out to Garty.
[0:05:41 – 0:05:41] SPEAKER_01: Hey, guys.
[0:05:41 – 0:05:42] SPEAKER_01: I’m doing great.
[0:05:45 – 0:05:48] Erik: Don’t worry, we’ll pour a little in your sombrero, friend.
[0:05:49 – 0:05:58] Erik: The sombrero is rocking, keeping the rain off of Gordy’s head, even though I do believe he does have the feathers that can allow him to slough off the rain.
[0:05:58 – 0:06:00] Adam: I’m not worried about the rain, it’s just the damage of the sun.
[0:06:00 – 0:06:04] Adam: All this sun we’re going to get here in the next couple of days, for sure.
[0:06:04 – 0:06:10] Erik: Yeah, really, based on the forecast, I feel like it’s going to be a sunlight trip.
[0:06:11 – 0:06:12] Adam: I bought SPF 50, though.
[0:06:13 – 0:06:13] Erik: Oh, man.
[0:06:13 – 0:06:16] Erik: You have a mosquito on your under chin that is, ooh.
[0:06:17 – 0:06:17] Erik: Yeah, you got him.
[0:06:18 – 0:06:19] Adam: Now I really got him.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:21] Adam: Blood is everywhere.
[0:06:21 – 0:06:22] Adam: Blood is everywhere.
[0:06:22 – 0:06:24] Erik: The feeding frenzy has begun.
[0:06:25 – 0:06:29] Erik: We’re going to try to not contract malaria.
[0:06:30 – 0:06:33] Erik: We’ve got our off deep woods dry spray.
[0:06:33 – 0:06:34] Erik: We’ve got some rubs.
[0:06:35 – 0:06:37] Erik: We’ve got some salves.
[0:06:38 – 0:06:39] Erik: We’ve got some unguents.
[0:06:40 – 0:06:46] Adam: We got some special items in the culinary bucket that I’m pretty delighted about.
[0:06:47 – 0:06:47] Adam: Oh, yes.
[0:06:47 – 0:06:49] Adam: What’s that mean?
[0:06:49 – 0:06:50] Erik: Stay tuned.
[0:06:50 – 0:06:52] Erik: There are some surprises coming your way.
[0:06:52 – 0:06:53] Adam: Culinary delights, multiple.
[0:06:53 – 0:06:56] Adam: That’s plural, culinary delights on this trip.
[0:06:56 – 0:07:08] Adam: And, yeah, we’ll get into this more later, but we literally just picked the route, figuratively, I think you mean, on the drive out here, essentially.
[0:07:08 – 0:07:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:07:08 – 0:07:09] Erik: What do you mean?
[0:07:09 – 0:07:24] Erik: I mean, considering the date, obviously when this is going to come out, you all know when we’re out here, it went from a potential sneaky trip into a lake that will probably in the future be named for its sneakiness.
[0:07:24 – 0:07:27] Erik: And if you’ve been paying attention, you probably know the lake.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:31] Erik: We were going to head in that direction, and it just didn’t end up working out.
[0:07:31 – 0:07:37] Erik: But last second, pulled up the old recreation.gov website, and what do you know?
[0:07:38 – 0:07:42] Erik: There were two permits available, close to in the entire park.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:07:43 – 0:07:44] Erik: Incredible.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:44] Erik: Clearwater.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:46] Erik: What?
[0:07:46 – 0:07:48] Erik: Wow.
[0:07:48 – 0:07:48] Erik: Two.
[0:07:49 – 0:07:52] Erik: They’re down to two a day on Clearwater, and one of them was available for today.
[0:07:53 – 0:07:54] Erik: But…
[0:07:55 – 0:08:20] Erik: davis remains to be claimed and we want to claim it i want to visit you davis oh i want to want that i want to visit you so hard so the alternative and the only other permit available on the entire gunflint trail was a liz and swamp permit like how it’s gotta be the top two and like in terms of
[0:08:20 – 0:08:38] Adam: rareness in the middle of summer i would say of course yeah yeah i uh got into work pretty early today and i immediately uh got busy looking at the internet on the company laptop and saw that these two permits were available somehow i i could not believe it when i saw it i screen grabbed what i could
[0:08:39 – 0:08:40] Adam: And sent it to Eric.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:44] Adam: And, yeah, about noon, I think, we made the call.
[0:08:44 – 0:08:48] Adam: Like, okay, well, we’re going to, I think, just grab this Liz Swamp.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:48] Erik: 47?
[0:08:48 – 0:08:49] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:49 – 0:08:50] Erik: EP47?
[0:08:50 – 0:08:52] Erik: We’re sneaking in the back entrance into Swamp.
[0:08:52 – 0:08:56] Erik: The last time we were out on Swamp together was the Madness of Winter with a Vengeance.
[0:08:57 – 0:08:57] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:57 – 0:08:58] Erik: The Derelict Attorney.
[0:08:58 – 0:08:59] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:59 – 0:09:00] Adam: If you remember.
[0:09:00 – 0:09:02] Adam: We were out here catching some walleye, too, last winter.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:04] Adam: Blowing it up.
[0:09:04 – 0:09:05] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[0:09:05 – 0:09:13] Adam: But, yeah, we’re on the sneaky back door, Bandedad Ski Trail entrance here drinking some fine beer in the wood.
[0:09:14 – 0:09:19] Adam: We’re going to go into Swamp Caribou, you know, the usual way out of Swamp.
[0:09:20 – 0:09:41] Adam: the why do people hate on that portage so much i’ll never understand it’s not that bad and then immediately from caribou down to horseshoe and then we’ll see but that was basically all we had when we got to the car today and i think we’ve already settled on a pretty good idea based on the time of day what the weather’s doing and our ultimate goals are for the next three days
[0:09:41 – 0:09:54] Erik: Yeah, based on the forecast, based on the lakes we’ve seen, the lakes you’ve seen, we are going to find ourselves, I believe, for the most part, on light version waters for you.
[0:09:54 – 0:09:57] Adam: Yeah, there’s going to be some new water on this route for me, not just Davis.
[0:09:58 – 0:09:59] Adam: I’ve never been to Hanson.
[0:09:59 – 0:10:02] Adam: I’ve never been to… Pillsbury.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:03] Adam: Pillsbury.
[0:10:03 – 0:10:07] Adam: I’ve never been to Omega or Ogema, whichever one you like.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:09] Adam: I’m going to call it Omega.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:11] Adam: There is an Elpha nearby.
[0:10:11 – 0:10:17] Erik: Yeah, we’re taking the northern route down to… My God, the mosquitoes are…
[0:10:17 – 0:10:22] Adam: They’re going to be in here working on our glove box warmies, I’m afraid.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:28] Adam: We’re going to get back and they’re going to have a lot of little straw holes poked in the oil can, so to speak.
[0:10:28 – 0:10:41] Erik: Yeah, there’s definitely some glove box warmies waiting for us, but these old 26ers, the Bang Bang Double IPAs from Station 26 Brewing out of Denver, Colorado.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:42] Adam: Drink me now.
[0:10:47 – 0:10:50] Erik: How lucky do you feel, Andrew, for having your beers?
[0:10:51 – 0:10:55] Erik: Whoever knows how long they’ve been sitting in storage, cool, cold storage.
[0:10:56 – 0:10:56] Erik: It tastes great.
[0:10:56 – 0:11:05] Erik: They taste amazing, and they just happen to find themselves on a first in over a year, in the field, overnight summer Boundary Waters trip.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:09] Erik: You must feel, you’re probably just buzzing right now, Andrew.
[0:11:09 – 0:11:12] Adam: Well, that’s what happens when you include the oatmeal mouth mixers.
[0:11:13 – 0:11:13] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:27] Adam: pretty good reason to bring them along because who you always could use a little extra oatmeal on your trip so we’re just gonna put those in our dildons and get on going but uh there’s a little bit of traffic out here um
[0:11:30 – 0:11:33] Adam: Yeah, we didn’t bring any fresh dill on this trip, it turns out.
[0:11:33 – 0:11:35] Adam: But we’re doing, like I said, culinary adventure trip.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:37] Adam: So we’re going to go the opposite way.
[0:11:38 – 0:11:42] Adam: We’re going to zig where we used to zag when it comes to the food on this trip.
[0:11:42 – 0:11:44] Adam: And so we’ll try the oatmeal mouth mixer.
[0:11:44 – 0:11:46] Adam: I mean, I’ve never done it before, so we’re going to do it.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:50] Erik: Yeah, we’re not going to mouth mix in the parking lot here like heathens.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:54] Erik: We will save that for tomorrow morning.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:59] Erik: Or maybe when we just need a jolt of sugary Quaker energy.
[0:11:59 – 0:12:01] Adam: You never know, it might be on the Port of June to Davis.
[0:12:01 – 0:12:05] Adam: We’re going to have to stop and put one down the hatch, you know.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:09] Adam: Where are you giving these bang-bangs, Eric?
[0:12:09 – 0:12:11] Erik: I mean, it’s hard to give anything at this point.
[0:12:11 – 0:12:21] Erik: I could literally be drinking warm, hard Mountain Dews right now, and they would taste amazing, knowing what we’re about to get ourselves into.
[0:12:21 – 0:12:23] Erik: Everything tastes better when you’re at the entry point.
[0:12:23 – 0:12:27] Erik: Everything tastes better when you’re right about at the cusp of a wilderness.
[0:12:28 – 0:12:28] Erik: exploration.
[0:12:29 – 0:12:50] Erik: And honestly, there’s a part of me to not blather on too much longer in the parking lot here that has in the last year or so kind of been a little bit jaded on travels into entry points in and around and off of the Gunflint Trail that has had me not so excited just because I’ve paddled all of these lakes so much.
[0:12:51 – 0:12:55] Erik: But there’s something about the destination and the seeing of
[0:12:56 – 0:13:25] Erik: of davis and it’s also been a long time since i’ve done that like middle vein of the north of big winchy south of the banadad i haven’t been on those lakes in over a decade it’s gonna be new waters for you it’s gonna basically be like almost only second time for me on some of those it’s gonna be fresh lakes all around almost uh almost like it’s the first time for for both of us really i would say and uh
[0:13:26 – 0:13:30] Adam: I can’t say, um, I was, I was pretty excited about our first plan.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:31] Adam: That was a solid plan.
[0:13:33 – 0:13:42] Adam: But I mean, for one, I can’t, I can’t get enough of like this, the old thunder in the distance and the Bob Dylan while we’re getting ready to go to like, I am amped up.
[0:13:42 – 0:13:43] Adam: I’ve got the goosebumps going.
[0:13:43 – 0:13:44] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:44 – 0:13:45] Adam: New water ahead.
[0:13:45 – 0:13:51] Adam: And, um, I just love how it all came together at the last kind of perfect second for us on this trip.
[0:13:52 – 0:13:55] Adam: So episode two or two, you’re here with us live in the field.
[0:13:56 – 0:14:01] Adam: We have yet to really finalize the packs, but Gordy’s here.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:04] Adam: The boat’s off the top of the car.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:06] Adam: Everything’s about ready.
[0:14:06 – 0:14:11] Adam: Everybody out there who’s been on a Boundary Waters trip knows this feeling, and here we are.
[0:14:12 – 0:14:17] Erik: Yeah, right on the cusp, there really is only so many other things that you can make a decision on.
[0:14:18 – 0:14:22] Erik: If things have been forgotten, they are forgotten.
[0:14:23 – 0:14:29] Erik: And we will only find out in the future that we may need to bushcraft an item or two.
[0:14:33 – 0:14:33] Adam: And with that…
[0:14:33 – 0:14:36] Adam: I’m going to give this beer 10 out of 10.
[0:14:36 – 0:14:37] Erik: Ban a dance.
[0:14:38 – 0:14:41] Erik: Yeah, I don’t think we gave it a full grade, but I had alluded to it.
[0:14:41 – 0:14:46] Erik: It is, whatever it is, it’s always going to be a 10 out of 10 in a parking lot of a Bon Jovi’s entry point.
[0:14:47 – 0:14:51] Erik: And coming in on the back sneaky way, we don’t have to worry about the…
[0:14:54 – 0:15:19] Erik: powered walkway that is the liz portages we don’t have to worry about the light kind of not necessarily pointless but almost disappointing to be just kind of starting out on poplar just to like get right back out of the canoe right away we’re going to be basically plunging right in portaging and crossing that borderline it’s right there i can see it
[0:15:19 – 0:15:22] Erik: crossing that line that does designate the wilderness.
[0:15:23 – 0:15:31] Erik: And as you all know, if you are longtime listeners, who knows what the future holds.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:33] Erik: Stay tuned.
[0:15:59 – 0:16:01] Adam: Yeah, that’s a good spot.
[0:16:20 – 0:16:25] Erik: Immediate waylay, immediate waylay.
[0:16:26 – 0:16:29] Erik: Don’t get too big for your barrel.
[0:16:30 – 0:16:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:16:32 – 0:16:33] Erik: We’re here.
[0:16:33 – 0:16:45] Erik: Yeah, we could probably still be out there paddling, but I don’t know if that thunder came through, but if you didn’t hear it, it’s a crackin’.
[0:16:46 – 0:16:48] Erik: And it’s a rainin’.
[0:16:49 – 0:16:52] Erik: It’s not so much the rain that causes us to stop.
[0:16:54 – 0:16:57] Erik: It is the omnipresent…
[0:17:00 – 0:17:24] Erik: tunders yeah we uh we’re two portages in we we joined you again once again here on tumble home under the canoe do you remember our first canoe waylay uh was that like on the monument portage oh here we go stay tuned ladies and gentlemen portage going into out of sag and uh
[0:17:32 – 0:17:34] Adam: There’s a big pine over there.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:35] Bob: Nice.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:39] Adam: Yeah, that’s the sound of experienced paddlers knowing when to waylay themselves.
[0:17:40 – 0:17:43] Adam: You don’t want to hear that noise out on the water.
[0:17:43 – 0:17:46] Adam: Made it in here in about 12 minutes on the good.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:53] Erik: You don’t want to start seeing St. Elmo’s fire on the front of your sunglasses and just keep trying to push it.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:56] Erik: We’ve got plenty of daylight, although it seems dark.
[0:17:56 – 0:17:58] Erik: It is just because of the weather.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:04] Erik: I believe our first waylay was the first fourth of Brulai trip.
[0:18:05 – 0:18:06] Adam: Oh, with Pup?
[0:18:06 – 0:18:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:07 – 0:18:08] Erik: Young Pup.
[0:18:08 – 0:18:10] Adam: Yeah, I feel like our trip to Knife with…
[0:18:13 – 0:18:16] Adam: Torian Heaven was before that, and we got waylaid on that portage.
[0:18:16 – 0:18:19] Adam: We did a similar move with the boat and the tree and the wine.
[0:18:20 – 0:18:21] Erik: Oh, I don’t think, all right.
[0:18:21 – 0:18:23] Erik: I don’t know if that’s a total waylaid, though.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:27] Erik: Well, I don’t know if we, I don’t think we were also, we were not recording that either.
[0:18:27 – 0:18:28] Erik: Oh, true, yeah.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:29] Erik: Yeah, I guess I meant like.
[0:18:30 – 0:18:31] Erik: Total waylaids.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:32] Erik: Waylaid, Tumble Home waylaids.
[0:18:33 – 0:18:34] Erik: There’s been a number of them.
[0:18:34 – 0:18:36] Erik: Top 10 waylaids next week.
[0:18:37 – 0:18:38] Adam: Waylaid linkers.
[0:18:40 – 0:18:41] Erik: Waylay rankers.
[0:18:41 – 0:18:41] Adam: Yes.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:46] Adam: We got our expected waylay above average is through the roof.
[0:18:48 – 0:18:49] Adam: We just know how to find them.
[0:18:49 – 0:18:52] Adam: We nestle right into the waylay.
[0:18:52 – 0:18:53] Adam: I’m not even under the canoe.
[0:18:53 – 0:18:54] Adam: I’m going to definitely get struck.
[0:18:58 – 0:18:59] UNKNOWN: Here comes the rain.
[0:18:59 – 0:19:01] Adam: I’m going to snuggle in here, bud.
[0:19:01 – 0:19:02] Erik: There it is.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:03] Erik: Heck yeah.
[0:19:05 – 0:19:15] Erik: This was probably, in terms of waylay rankers, close to the desperation.
[0:19:15 – 0:19:16] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:19:16 – 0:19:18] Erik: Don’t tip it too far.
[0:19:18 – 0:19:19] Erik: Gordy.
[0:19:19 – 0:19:20] SPEAKER_01: Gordy, get it together.
[0:19:22 – 0:19:23] Erik: Now I got to hold on to it.
[0:19:25 – 0:19:31] Erik: The waylay on the Pigeon River where we just had to plunge it into the woods immediately.
[0:19:31 – 0:19:33] Adam: There’s no good waylay trees here.
[0:19:34 – 0:19:36] Adam: This portage gets a 6 out of 10.
[0:19:37 – 0:19:38] Adam: Great landing.
[0:19:39 – 0:19:40] Adam: Excellent embouchure.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:44] Adam: And zero waylay tree, but a good boulder we got nestled into.
[0:19:44 – 0:19:45] Erik: Got a solid boulder.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:47] Adam: A boulder and like a half stump.
[0:19:47 – 0:19:55] Erik: Do you want to hang on to the mic maybe and I can try to like reposition the… Yeah, I think we just lost our support tree here a little bit.
[0:19:56 – 0:19:57] Adam: Eric’s on top of this.
[0:19:59 – 0:20:00] Adam: If we haven’t…
[0:20:01 – 0:20:04] Adam: I think… Oh, there we go.
[0:20:04 – 0:20:05] Adam: Oh, now I’m really in here.
[0:20:05 – 0:20:08] Adam: Oh, the sound acoustics.
[0:20:08 – 0:20:09] SPEAKER_01: Oh, gosh.
[0:20:14 – 0:20:19] Erik: This might be our most appropriate waylay, though, considering the sounds of the cracks.
[0:20:19 – 0:20:20] Erik: My god.
[0:20:20 – 0:20:22] Erik: Yeah, good thing we did stop.
[0:20:22 – 0:20:26] Adam: We were like, eh, we can… Well, okay, so did you even say where we are?
[0:20:26 – 0:20:27] Erik: Yeah, we’re on the… Two legs in.
[0:20:28 – 0:20:29] Erik: Two legs in, two portages.
[0:20:29 – 0:20:36] Erik: And my legs and my body and my lungs can definitely tell that I have not portaged in over a year.
[0:20:36 – 0:20:42] Erik: That was a rough 150 out of swamp into caribou.
[0:20:43 – 0:20:52] Adam: Yeah, so we got to Caribou, and it’s a short little paddle around the bend to the Caribou to Horseshoe Portage, which is where you find us.
[0:20:53 – 0:20:56] Adam: And you may wonder, what are you doing out there?
[0:20:57 – 0:20:59] Adam: Well, this is just the beginning, really.
[0:20:59 – 0:21:04] Adam: We didn’t really plan to stop here for a break, but as we always say here on Tumble Home…
[0:21:06 – 0:21:30] Adam: with the flow and you gotta go with the storm sometimes yeah i i felt like that 150 from swamp into caribou is more like a two i feel it felt way longer but there’s so many like slight rises and drops and the footing is terrible it’s a little overgrown it’s not like the worst portage in the world but yeah that one gets a bad rap and uh that was the first time through it where i was really like now i see what they’re talking about
[0:21:31 – 0:21:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:31 – 0:21:33] Erik: No, and I mean, oh man.
[0:21:33 – 0:21:36] Erik: I’m very happy we’re under the canoe right now.
[0:21:36 – 0:21:37] Erik: Oh man.
[0:21:38 – 0:21:41] Erik: I can’t even, like right away you were like, maybe we should flip the canoe over.
[0:21:41 – 0:21:42] Erik: It was kind of like lightly raining.
[0:21:42 – 0:21:44] Erik: I was like, I think we’ll be fine.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:55] Erik: And then within like five minutes we had like five ultimate thunderclaps and it is literally, God is shitting his pants right now.
[0:21:59 – 0:22:17] Adam: tumble home a boundary waters podcast coming to you live in the field this is july 26th 2022 this is my latest first trip ever oh yeah i would say for sure for me too in like since i started paddling as in an overnight yeah oh yeah for sure
[0:22:19 – 0:22:20] Erik: Latest overnight ever.
[0:22:20 – 0:22:22] Erik: Like, I’m surprised we even got this snuck in before August.
[0:22:22 – 0:22:23] Erik: It’s insane.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:25] Erik: I mean, maybe we spoke too soon.
[0:22:25 – 0:22:28] Erik: We might end up crawling back to the car and crying.
[0:22:29 – 0:22:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:32] Erik: When does Poplar House close?
[0:22:33 – 0:22:35] Adam: You guys have any rooms in the inn?
[0:22:35 – 0:22:36] Erik: Oh, man.
[0:22:36 – 0:22:37] Adam: We’re wet.
[0:22:37 – 0:22:41] Erik: Yeah, we could probably curl up like wet dogs in the back of the vibe.
[0:22:42 – 0:22:44] Adam: I’ve done that before for sure.
[0:22:46 – 0:22:47] Adam: Well, there you go.
[0:22:47 – 0:22:48] Adam: That was the peak of the storm.
[0:22:48 – 0:22:53] Adam: You can clearly tell from the audio that we’re now on to the good side of this storm front.
[0:22:53 – 0:23:00] Adam: And the barometer, yep, I’m looking at my barometer in the dill den, and it is rising again, so I think we’re okay.
[0:23:00 – 0:23:01] Erik: I think we’re good.
[0:23:01 – 0:23:07] Erik: Let me make sure we didn’t run into a snafu that we had last year.
[0:23:11 – 0:23:14] Erik: Oh, we’re still recording.
[0:23:14 – 0:23:14] Erik: We’re slashing.
[0:23:16 – 0:23:17] Adam: Special edition bag.
[0:23:17 – 0:23:23] Erik: I was going to say, all right, yeah, I was going to say, we’re just going to tease the special edition bag that we do have at our disposal.
[0:23:24 – 0:23:28] Erik: I have been off the wine for months at this point.
[0:23:28 – 0:23:33] Erik: I am very excited to taste the sweet nectar, the sweet fruit nectar.
[0:23:33 – 0:23:37] Adam: You got to guess what kind of vintage this is.
[0:23:37 – 0:23:40] Adam: This is a fine bag that was gifted to us.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:51] Adam: But it’s obscured in a way, which, again, we can’t say more, unfortunately, until tomorrow for part two.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:55] Adam: But we don’t know what kind of Franzia this is.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:58] Erik: It tastes like a Franzia.
[0:23:58 – 0:23:58] Erik: Very…
[0:24:01 – 0:24:28] Erik: very weak on all fronts it’s almost like i would say very sippable you mean that’s kind of where i was going towards i was thinking uh uh chalable red i was i always hoped for a chalable in my life yeah that’s what i’m thinking nothing really strikes me it’s just like it just tastes like light it’s like coors light red wine yeah you’re like a baby hummingbird at the feeder in june
[0:24:29 – 0:24:31] Erik: Just like a baby hummingbird at the feeder in June.
[0:24:31 – 0:24:36] Adam: All right, my name is Adam.
[0:24:36 – 0:24:40] Adam: Joining me here underneath the Min 2, my best man, Eric.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:42] Adam: Coming to you live in the field.
[0:24:43 – 0:24:45] Adam: It’s feeling really good out here.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:49] Adam: And honestly, I don’t even mind getting waylaid anymore, do you?
[0:24:49 – 0:24:51] Erik: No, I think it adds to the entire experience.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:52] Erik: It’s just part of it.
[0:24:52 – 0:24:53] Erik: I love the audio.
[0:24:53 – 0:24:55] Erik: I love the sound of it under the canoe.
[0:24:55 – 0:24:58] Erik: A couple of those cracks were just cool to experience.
[0:24:59 – 0:25:02] Erik: I know last week we thought we were actually going to be putting this trip together.
[0:25:02 – 0:25:05] Erik: If you can’t tell, put the puzzle together as to…
[0:25:06 – 0:25:25] Erik: the entire like timeline of the last few weeks of this show but we were planning on going out last week and it seems like our days off align wednesdays thursdays and we work obviously in between those days and in between those days for the last month it has just been perfect
[0:25:25 – 0:25:26] SPEAKER_01: Just dead calm.
[0:25:26 – 0:25:26] Erik: Bangers.
[0:25:27 – 0:25:28] Erik: Just banger days.
[0:25:28 – 0:25:31] Erik: Like a little warm maybe, but like no wind.
[0:25:31 – 0:25:32] Erik: Nothing in the sky.
[0:25:32 – 0:25:33] Erik: Like perfect paddling.
[0:25:34 – 0:25:40] Erik: And every time Tuesdays roll around, it’s like 60% chance of storms and rain.
[0:25:40 – 0:25:43] Adam: 25 mile an hour gusts out of the northwest.
[0:25:43 – 0:25:44] Erik: It’s Tuesday.
[0:25:44 – 0:25:46] Erik: Will.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:49] Erik: Yeah, and then obviously after the rain, the winds move in.
[0:25:49 – 0:25:52] Erik: And then last week we kind of like shuttered the trip because of it.
[0:25:52 – 0:25:55] Erik: But then this week I saw it was going to do the same thing.
[0:25:56 – 0:25:57] Erik: But I just was like, whatever.
[0:25:57 – 0:25:58] Adam: I don’t believe it.
[0:25:58 – 0:25:59] Erik: First of all, I don’t believe it.
[0:25:59 – 0:26:00] Erik: Obviously, we’ve been… Not anymore.
[0:26:01 – 0:26:01] Erik: I believe it.
[0:26:01 – 0:26:06] Erik: But at the same time… Now I do a little bit, but…
[0:26:06 – 0:26:09] Erik: There’s something about just being out in it and just being like, well, whatever.
[0:26:10 – 0:26:15] Erik: We can’t just sit here with our thumbs up our butts all summer waiting for the perfect trip.
[0:26:15 – 0:26:16] Erik: Let’s just do it.
[0:26:16 – 0:26:17] Erik: Let’s just go.
[0:26:17 – 0:26:18] Erik: Most people don’t get the opportunity to…
[0:26:20 – 0:26:43] Erik: wait until a perfect two days come out of the blue and here we are and i think it like adds to it yeah and then makes a permit yeah and the last second permit was just like gem permit cherry on top we have not seen obviously we’ve been out here for 30 minutes but we have not seen anybody we pulled on the caribou and it’s pouring you know and i’m like i look around i’m like nobody’s fishing huh
[0:26:47 – 0:27:10] Adam: bunch of lazy bums get out those guys to be had i’m sure they’re hungry right now oh this would probably be a really good time to have a bobber in but uh probably an appropriate time to mention that we didn’t even bring fishing gear oh no here goes the listens the downloads just dropped eric they don’t even fish they go paddling every 12 to 16 months and they don’t even fish
[0:27:12 – 0:27:12] Adam: What is this?
[0:27:12 – 0:27:17] Erik: We’ve always said we’re not a fishing podcast, but we are a Boundary Waters podcast.
[0:27:18 – 0:27:18] Adam: Enthusiasts.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:20] Adam: We’re currently coming to you live in the park.
[0:27:20 – 0:27:26] Erik: Yeah, this harkens back to many previous trips of sitting under the canoe.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:30] Erik: It’s a tradition unlike any other at this point.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:33] Erik: Yeah, it’s almost up there with the tumble turning.
[0:27:34 – 0:27:57] Erik: quite up there with album of the summer the tumble attorney uh my back is wet my ass is also wet i’m not that cold but i don’t know if there’s any place that i would rather be right now this is great i wholeheartedly agree sir for tumble home live in the field we’re gonna it seems like it is lighting up here so i think we’re gonna
[0:27:59 – 0:28:26] Adam: turn this track down just a notch maybe have a few more sips of wine and proceed down to the other side here see what horseshoe has to offer uh i’m guessing it’s gonna offer all sorts of joy and gratitude and uh i’m sure it’s gonna be filled with dead moose and a bunch of people camping all right we’ll catch you on the other side we got one more cracker coming our way
[0:28:31 – 0:28:32] Erik: Ah, wait for it.
[0:28:39 – 0:28:39] SPEAKER_01: Wow.
[0:28:41 – 0:28:45] Erik: It’s like a disappointing shit.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:48] SPEAKER_01: The clouds, they start to scream.
[0:29:48 – 0:29:51] SPEAKER_01: Dirt is in the track.
[0:29:51 – 0:29:54] SPEAKER_01: And the river starts to run.
[0:29:54 – 0:29:56] SPEAKER_01: Strange as it seems.
[0:29:56 – 0:30:00] SPEAKER_01: The clouds, they start to scream.
[0:30:00 – 0:30:03] UNKNOWN: What if you’re wrong?
[0:30:03 – 0:30:04] UNKNOWN: I think I’m nothing on the ground.
[0:31:12 – 0:31:16] Erik: Couple of wet boys out here.
[0:31:17 – 0:31:18] Erik: Whaley.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:19] Erik: Times three.
[0:31:20 – 0:31:24] Erik: We’ve made it 30 rods down the portage.
[0:31:26 – 0:31:28] Erik: And it is off and on.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:33] Erik: It teases us with lightning up and then continuing to dump.
[0:31:35 – 0:31:40] Adam: Yeah, we probably got two and a half inches of rain just since we got to this portage at this point.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:42] Adam: I think that’s, I’m not even exaggerating.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:49] Adam: We’re here on beautiful Horseshoe Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
[0:31:51 – 0:31:51] Erik: We’re having a good time.
[0:31:52 – 0:31:53] Erik: We are having a good time.
[0:31:53 – 0:31:56] Erik: I love that we bailed on last week’s trip and it rained for like 20 minutes.
[0:31:57 – 0:31:58] Erik: And we’re like, we’re doing it this week.
[0:31:58 – 0:31:59] Erik: It’s probably going to be the same thing.
[0:32:00 – 0:32:03] Erik: And it’s been raining for like an hour and 20 minutes straight.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:04] Erik: Hard.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:06] Erik: Hard rain, too.
[0:32:06 – 0:32:07] Erik: But no wind, at least.
[0:32:07 – 0:32:08] Erik: No.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:09] Erik: I’d rather no wind.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:11] Erik: If we…
[0:32:11 – 0:32:14] Erik: Which, I mean, there’s no backing out now.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:16] Erik: If we have to, like…
[0:32:17 – 0:32:24] Erik: We could press on and just like sit in a canoe in a pouring hard rain.
[0:32:25 – 0:32:30] Adam: Problematic is that we got a late start on the day because we both worked.
[0:32:30 – 0:32:34] Adam: So there’s only like a good hour of moving time at this point.
[0:32:35 – 0:32:37] Adam: Still at the landing here on the portage.
[0:32:38 – 0:32:43] Adam: You start to do the math and look at the map a little more closely in this position.
[0:32:45 – 0:32:48] Adam: Probably a lot of you listening to this show have been in this position.
[0:32:48 – 0:32:49] Adam: Do you push on?
[0:32:50 – 0:32:51] Adam: How far are you trying to get?
[0:32:51 – 0:32:53] Adam: At this point, we’re just trying to get to a campsite.
[0:32:54 – 0:32:57] Adam: How many people listening to Tumblum have been in that position?
[0:32:57 – 0:33:01] Adam: Like, I just got to get to the next available campsite and shut her down for the night.
[0:33:02 – 0:33:04] Adam: So we’re in kind of that position.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:09] Adam: There’s three to four good targets in front of us at this point.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:10] Erik: The…
[0:33:12 – 0:33:26] Erik: What seems to be now clear shutting it down early, for reasons entirely outside of our control, seem to be maybe making for a bit of a longer day tomorrow.
[0:33:27 – 0:33:28] Erik: What the fuck, Davis?
[0:33:29 – 0:33:31] Erik: Why do you have to be such an asshole?
[0:33:31 – 0:33:32] Erik: Davis eludes us.
[0:33:33 – 0:33:37] Erik: Also, Gordy tried to shed his tiny sombrero.
[0:33:37 – 0:33:43] Adam: Luckily, Eric saw it because of the earlier waylay position, and we do have the sombrero.
[0:33:43 – 0:33:43] Adam: Don’t worry.
[0:33:45 – 0:33:46] Adam: Davis, you’re going to see it.
[0:33:46 – 0:33:47] Adam: I think it’s going to happen either way.
[0:33:48 – 0:33:56] Adam: It’s just going to be, you know, just going to be sweeter than ever when we finally have steak lunch at Davis.
[0:33:57 – 0:33:58] Adam: Here it comes again.
[0:33:58 – 0:33:59] Adam: The last, this is probably the last.
[0:33:59 – 0:34:00] Erik: This is probably the last of it.
[0:34:01 – 0:34:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:01 – 0:34:02] Erik: I’ve been saying that for an hour.
[0:34:09 – 0:34:21] Erik: Yeah, I would say you lightly touched on it off mic, but for sure the first time we’ve dealt with a scenario of such on this podcast where the trip starts.
[0:34:23 – 0:34:26] Erik: with constant and continual rain.
[0:34:27 – 0:34:29] SPEAKER_01: It’s not even like a, eh, it might pass.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:30] Erik: I think it’s passing.
[0:34:31 – 0:34:41] Erik: No, this has been like a constant rain event for close to, like I said, I think it may be exaggerated at an hour and a half, but like for sure close to an hour now.
[0:34:42 – 0:34:44] Erik: And the portage- Yeah, I would say that’s legit.
[0:34:44 – 0:34:46] Erik: It’s been an hour straight of this.
[0:34:46 – 0:34:50] Erik: Yeah, when we portaged over here, it was in a, it was standing water.
[0:34:51 – 0:34:53] Erik: borderline river at times.
[0:34:55 – 0:35:02] Erik: And this country doesn’t really soak up the water all that well, so it is running down the portage landing right now.
[0:35:04 – 0:35:05] Erik: Like Willy Wonka’s
[0:35:07 – 0:35:11] Adam: We’ve got to do Willy Wonka on Tumblewum Cinema Classics after Red Dawn, I think.
[0:35:11 – 0:35:16] Adam: It’s been three weeks in a row with a Willy Wonka reference on the show.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:18] Adam: I’m going to go ahead and make it my pick.
[0:35:19 – 0:35:20] Bob: Okay.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:21] Bob: Is it raining?
[0:35:21 – 0:35:22] Bob: Is it pouring?
[0:35:22 – 0:35:25] Adam: This chocolate is full of poison.
[0:35:25 – 0:35:25] Adam: Is it?
[0:35:25 – 0:35:26] Adam: Oh, no!
[0:35:26 – 0:35:26] Adam: Oh, no!
[0:35:31 – 0:35:34] Erik: Oompa, oompa, doo-ba-dee-doo.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:38] Erik: This man likes to eat chocolate poison.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:43] Adam: I like to paddle a canoe in the rain.
[0:35:44 – 0:35:49] Adam: Then I know what it feels like pain.
[0:35:50 – 0:35:51] Bob: Feels like pain.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:52] Adam: That’s it.
[0:35:53 – 0:35:56] Erik: Yeah, we are, I mean, there’s a part of me that’s like, well, we already really…
[0:35:57 – 0:36:05] Erik: have gotten completely soaked, but then when you go out in this, it’s like, it’s a completely different level of getting wet.
[0:36:08 – 0:36:13] Adam: Yeah, you’re in the danger zone of getting a little cold right now, because it’s not quite that hot.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:13] Adam: No.
[0:36:14 – 0:36:24] Adam: You also have to think about that, and we have plenty of rainflies at our disposal, but you’ve got to get somewhere for the night to deploy those, so…
[0:36:25 – 0:36:31] Adam: You know, good thing I always have a headlamp with high-powered batteries into it.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:35] Adam: So if we have to push it a little deep into the darkness tonight, we’ll figure a way out.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:41] Adam: But the thing is, in this position, it’s like the temptation is there.
[0:36:42 – 0:36:42] Adam: We got to go.
[0:36:42 – 0:36:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:36:43 – 0:36:44] Adam: We got to go.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:45] Adam: It’s almost getting dark.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:46] Adam: Trust me.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:47] Adam: It’s the middle of summer.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:48] Adam: It’s not getting that dark.
[0:36:49 – 0:36:50] Adam: Everything’s fine.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:53] Adam: We’re just going to, you know, hold steady.
[0:36:54 – 0:37:05] Erik: But my God, I would trade my soul for a radar app right now just to see where, like, it’s pouring.
[0:37:05 – 0:37:06] Adam: We’re in a flash flood zone now.
[0:37:06 – 0:37:10] Erik: It is raining harder than it’s rained before up to this point, I feel.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:12] Erik: I love that we were like, yeah, I guess letting off.
[0:37:12 – 0:37:13] Adam: We might have to go, yeah.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:15] Adam: And then it’s like, I don’t know.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:16] Adam: Hold out.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:18] Adam: Hold out just for five more minutes.
[0:37:18 – 0:37:21] Erik: Well, I mean, I hope, I mean, I’m assuming you can hear this.
[0:37:29 – 0:37:32] Erik: Because the rain on the top of the canoe is always misleading.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:33] Erik: It is.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:36] Erik: But the rain on the surface of the lake right now is…
[0:37:38 – 0:37:38] Erik: I don’t even know what…
[0:37:39 – 0:37:41] Erik: It’s like the ceiling’s on shitty…
[0:37:43 – 0:38:09] Erik: 80s and 90s homes those like popcorn ceilings where it’s just like pockmarked with little like sharp points it’s like when you let the oil in the pan get a little too hot in the cast iron and you go to flick a little water in it yeah but that but the whole world is a cast iron pan my lord yeah this portage is a if if
[0:38:10 – 0:38:15] Adam: I already had to pack away the camera due to it being too wet.
[0:38:15 – 0:38:18] Adam: There’s like a delta forming.
[0:38:18 – 0:38:31] Erik: Yeah, I was going to say, if there were citizens on the bottom of this portage in the form of small animals, this is a, I would have to imagine, generational flood that’s happening right now for them.
[0:38:32 – 0:38:34] Erik: They’re getting wiped out.
[0:38:36 – 0:38:39] Erik: That is some brown water that is fully flowing down
[0:38:42 – 0:38:47] Erik: We have some active erosion events happening currently on this portage.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Erik: It’s lightening up, though.
[0:38:48 – 0:38:49] Erik: I think it’s going to let up.
[0:38:49 – 0:38:50] Erik: I think it’s going to let up.
[0:38:51 – 0:38:52] Adam: Yeah, I think so.
[0:38:52 – 0:38:53] Erik: Yeah?
[0:38:53 – 0:38:53] Erik: We think we’re good?
[0:38:55 – 0:38:59] Adam: Yeah, like we said at the top, we’re not going to let that get us down.
[0:38:59 – 0:39:07] Adam: We’re just enjoying it as much as you can, hanging out underneath an upturned canoe in the rain.
[0:39:07 – 0:39:11] Adam: It’s been a lot of fun, and it is going to let up, and we’re moving on here shortly.
[0:39:12 – 0:39:16] Adam: I mean, honestly, Eric, if we have to, we’ll paddle in the dark to get to a campsite.
[0:39:17 – 0:39:19] Adam: It can’t rain all night, can it?
[0:39:19 – 0:39:20] Adam: Fast forward now.
[0:39:20 – 0:39:24] Adam: Tomorrow at 3 p.m. We’re still here at this partage.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:25] Adam: We’re all wrinkly fingered.
[0:39:26 – 0:39:28] Adam: Yeah.
[0:39:29 – 0:39:30] Adam: I’m pretty wrinkle-free right now.
[0:39:30 – 0:39:35] Erik: Yeah, I’m not that wrinkly, but I have that odd…
[0:39:36 – 0:39:37] Adam: You have that funny feeling.
[0:39:38 – 0:39:43] Erik: That funny feeling where you paddle and portage for an hour and then just have to shut it down for an hour?
[0:39:43 – 0:39:44] Erik: Like, that’s not natural.
[0:39:45 – 0:39:46] Erik: I was ready to go.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:53] Adam: No, I was just starting to get warmed up as we got into this, but honestly, it’s probably for the best.
[0:39:55 – 0:40:04] Adam: Now once we get going again, we’ll really be like the rubber band that’s the tension of the twisted band.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:09] Adam: That’s what’s going to happen as soon as we hit the water.
[0:40:09 – 0:40:11] Adam: It’s going to be like, zip.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:12] Adam: There we go.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:13] Adam: There they go.
[0:40:13 – 0:40:14] Adam: I think it really is letting up.
[0:40:14 – 0:40:16] Adam: Now it truly does look light out here.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:20] Adam: And you can see a, I don’t mean, that white pine’s probably 200 years old.
[0:40:20 – 0:40:21] Adam: It’s right there.
[0:40:21 – 0:40:22] Adam: I hadn’t seen it until just now.
[0:40:23 – 0:40:24] Adam: So it clearly is letting up.
[0:40:24 – 0:40:25] Adam: And here’s a mosquito.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:26] Adam: There’s your first sign.
[0:40:28 – 0:40:29] Erik: Well, you know what they say.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:32] Erik: My friends think it’s darkest before dawn.
[0:40:33 – 0:40:38] Erik: But, I know that they’re all wrong.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:41] Erik: Butchered the mountain goat’s quote.
[0:40:41 – 0:40:44] Erik: It’s in there somewhere, and you know what I’m talking about.
[0:40:45 – 0:40:49] Erik: But, we’re going to take advantage of this window, and we’re going to flee!
[0:40:50 – 0:40:56] Adam: For Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast, coming to you from the Waylaid Mintoo.
[0:40:57 – 0:41:05] Adam: Want to give a special shout-out to all our friends on Patreon who are with us here on this incredible portage landing, watching the water flow.
[0:41:06 – 0:41:11] Adam: As always, go with the flow, and we’ll catch you whenever we find a campsite, wherever that may be.
[0:41:12 – 0:41:13] Adam: This is very exciting.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:16] Adam: This is very exciting.
[0:41:16 – 0:41:17] Adam: Rub shoulders vigorously.
[0:41:17 – 0:41:18] Adam: Ooh.
[0:41:18 – 0:41:18] Adam: Yeah, it’s over.
[0:41:19 – 0:41:21] Adam: All right, look at that.
[0:41:29 – 0:41:31] Erik: It’s the first time I’ve seen you with a head net on.
[0:41:33 – 0:41:40] Adam: Yeah, and it was like the last thing I packed, and I just kind of threw it in as an afterthought.
[0:41:40 – 0:41:46] Adam: At the very end, I was like, ah, I just saw it out of the corner of my eye up on the shelf, and I was like, ah, throw it in.
[0:41:47 – 0:41:48] Adam: I might want that.
[0:41:48 – 0:41:55] Adam: I’ve never ever been on a camping trip and been like, you know what, I’m glad I packed that head net until tonight.
[0:41:55 – 0:41:57] Adam: And then I was like, thank God I brought this thing.
[0:41:59 – 0:42:04] Erik: Holy smokes, Gus.
[0:42:04 – 0:42:08] Erik: Honestly, right now, it seems like it’s kind of a little bit better, but it’s not.
[0:42:09 – 0:42:23] Erik: We’re just getting more used to it, and we’ve been guzzling wine to try and make up for the fact that we’re still wearing wet clothes because we have not had the opportunity to get into dry clothes because we have been swarmed by…
[0:42:23 – 0:42:24] Erik: I mean, how many times…
[0:42:26 – 0:42:30] Erik: I feel like I’ve camped in the Boundary Waters, like, a lot.
[0:42:30 – 0:42:31] Erik: A lot.
[0:42:31 – 0:42:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:42:31 – 0:42:37] Erik: And this is up there with the worst bug experience of my life.
[0:42:38 – 0:42:41] Adam: Even with the bug net on, they’re, like, getting me.
[0:42:41 – 0:42:44] Adam: And you’re not wearing one, so I don’t know how you’re even operating.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:46] Adam: And just living in a cloud of smoke.
[0:42:47 – 0:42:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:42:47 – 0:42:57] Adam: Trying to move around just enough, but cloud of smoke and just constantly spraying D to this is definitely, uh, Alan at its worst.
[0:42:57 – 0:43:02] Adam: Welcome to Alan one, one and only Alan.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:05] Adam: Oh, Alan for the good times.
[0:43:06 – 0:43:07] Adam: Oh, Alan.
[0:43:09 – 0:43:09] Adam: Um,
[0:43:10 – 0:43:14] Adam: Yeah, Eric’s, like, fogging deep around camp.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:15] Adam: Like, we have ten bottles.
[0:43:16 – 0:43:18] Adam: And it doesn’t really matter, you know.
[0:43:18 – 0:43:19] Adam: Got to use them up right now.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Adam: But I’m, like, buttoned up.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:22] Adam: I got the bug net on.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:24] Adam: Even then, I’m itchy.
[0:43:25 – 0:43:30] Adam: And, yeah, I’m starting to wonder, like, how am I going to get into the net of the hammock?
[0:43:30 – 0:43:34] Adam: And this brings me to my first point of tonight’s adventure.
[0:43:34 – 0:43:35] Adam: Hammocks.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:35] Adam: Hammocks.
[0:43:36 – 0:43:51] Adam: They’re pretty nice, but if you’re in this kind of bug scenario, and you’ve got two guys trying to work overtime getting their hammocks and their bug nets, and we’ve got to set the rainflies up, although it does appear to be clearing here.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:53] Adam: I still don’t trust it.
[0:43:53 – 0:43:53] Bob: For now.
[0:43:53 – 0:43:57] Adam: There could be like a 4 a.m. thundercloud coming through, so…
[0:43:58 – 0:44:09] Adam: Yeah, all that effort between Eric and I to get our hammocks, bug nets, and rainflies up, plus the communal rainfly that Eric set up, I mean, that’s a lot of work.
[0:44:09 – 0:44:14] Adam: Like, we could have just, honestly, I told him earlier, I was like, I wish we just had a tent.
[0:44:14 – 0:44:14] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[0:44:14 – 0:44:19] Adam: We would have had that thing up half as much time, and we would have had, like, a refuge from the bug.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:24] Adam: But, again, we’ve been camping a long time, and I can’t remember very many nights where
[0:44:25 – 0:44:28] Adam: if any, that were, you know, this kind of bug level.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:30] Adam: This is a little obscene.
[0:44:31 – 0:44:31] Erik: It is obscene.
[0:44:32 – 0:44:38] Erik: And even if we had a tent, though, this site I don’t think accommodates a tent.
[0:44:39 – 0:44:43] Adam: There’s one spot back up when I was looking for wood way back on the other side.
[0:44:43 – 0:44:45] Adam: We’re kind of on a peninsula.
[0:44:46 – 0:44:50] Adam: So back by that other landing, there is, like, one site that could handle a smallish tent.
[0:44:50 – 0:44:50] Adam: Hmm.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:56] Adam: But, yeah, it’s not like a swamp or a bog out back either.
[0:44:56 – 0:44:57] Adam: It all just goes uphill.
[0:44:58 – 0:44:59] Adam: We’re on this peninsula.
[0:45:01 – 0:45:02] Adam: There’s zero wind.
[0:45:02 – 0:45:04] Adam: I just ate a bug somehow inside the net.
[0:45:05 – 0:45:09] Adam: There’s zero wind at all, and it just rained two and a half inches.
[0:45:09 – 0:45:13] Adam: So I think we just kind of caught one there, you know.
[0:45:13 – 0:45:14] Adam: That’s how it goes.
[0:45:14 – 0:45:15] Erik: Well, yeah, that’s the other thing, too.
[0:45:15 – 0:45:20] Erik: It’s like we kind of wanted to get a little bit farther than we did today, but…
[0:45:21 – 0:45:23] Erik: It was purring.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:30] Adam: It makes it even weirder that when we were stuck under the canoe, waylaid, that there was no bugs.
[0:45:30 – 0:45:34] Adam: You had commented on that earlier, how it was, like, bizarre.
[0:45:34 – 0:45:35] Adam: We’re in this heavy rain.
[0:45:36 – 0:45:44] Adam: No wind at all, just dead still, lightning around, and there’s not one mosquito to be found under this trapped canoe.
[0:45:44 – 0:45:48] Adam: And then we get here, and it was immediately like, well, now we know where they all were.
[0:45:48 – 0:45:49] Adam: They were on Allen.
[0:45:50 – 0:45:52] Adam: Allen won for the good times.
[0:45:52 – 0:45:59] Erik: Yeah, let it be known, Allen in the summer, not a place to be if you don’t like bugs.
[0:46:00 – 0:46:01] Adam: I mean, who knows?
[0:46:01 – 0:46:05] Adam: It could just be we’re catching Allen 1 on its worst possible bug night.
[0:46:05 – 0:46:08] Adam: But, I mean, I don’t know.
[0:46:08 – 0:46:09] Adam: It just seems like…
[0:46:10 – 0:46:12] Adam: From the lake, it looks like a butte, you know.
[0:46:12 – 0:46:15] Adam: And even pulling up, it looks like a butte.
[0:46:15 – 0:46:18] Adam: And even setting up, it’s really nice.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:19] Adam: It is a really nice spot, actually.
[0:46:19 – 0:46:23] Adam: I’m fortunate that all the firewood’s extremely wet.
[0:46:24 – 0:46:27] Adam: I mean, even the birch bark won’t burn right now.
[0:46:27 – 0:46:27] Adam: Yeah.
[0:46:27 – 0:46:31] Adam: And the bugs are 100 out of 100 bad.
[0:46:32 – 0:46:34] Adam: But anyhow.
[0:46:34 – 0:46:41] Erik: Yeah, we had the – there was a bit of an opportunity to maybe get a fire going, and that just kind of, like, smoldered out.
[0:46:42 – 0:46:52] Erik: Everything is – on top of the amount of rain that we’ve had up here lately, it also then rained, I don’t know, maybe an inch, two inches in the last, like, three hours.
[0:46:52 – 0:46:53] Erik: Yeah.
[0:46:53 – 0:46:55] Erik: It’s just dumped.
[0:46:56 – 0:47:23] Adam: was pretty good even the birch bark we were trying to like eat the birch bark we were peeling we weren’t hey hey we weren’t peeling it it was that stuff on the ground we were yeah that’s right and even that stuff was just like well it was on the ground you know we got just got dumped on so yeah that was a something just splashed something just splashed in the lake i just spend the rest of the night it’s just out in that lake bugs can’t get you underneath the water
[0:47:25 – 0:47:53] Adam: it sounds kind of nice actually right now forget yeah forget hammocks what about uh little mini submarine tubes that you sleep in yeah it’s like a underwater hammock and then the bugs can’t get you neither can the bad dreams either eric no more screaming no more screaming in the night yeah we’re pretty close we’re pretty closely set up over there in hammock town you’re gonna hear me screaming all night you can’t hear the screams underwater
[0:47:54 – 0:47:54] Erik: No, nobody can.
[0:47:55 – 0:47:56] Adam: Just the pike.
[0:47:56 – 0:47:57] Adam: What’s that mean?
[0:47:57 – 0:47:58] Adam: Just the pike.
[0:47:59 – 0:48:02] Adam: Yeah, just the fish and the dragonfly larvae.
[0:48:04 – 0:48:06] Adam: Alan, is everybody out there?
[0:48:06 – 0:48:07] Adam: Are you listening?
[0:48:07 – 0:48:11] Erik: I feel like that’s our biggest downfall right now is we don’t have the dragonflies around.
[0:48:11 – 0:48:17] Erik: The population of dragonflies is just zero, and the mosquitoes have taken over.
[0:48:17 – 0:48:18] Adam: Yeah, what’s going on, dragonflies?
[0:48:19 – 0:48:19] Adam: Get it together.
[0:48:19 – 0:48:20] Erik: New world order.
[0:48:21 – 0:48:25] Erik: The mosquitoes have taken back over, and it is…
[0:48:25 – 0:48:28] Adam: I think I did see one damselfly, though.
[0:48:28 – 0:48:32] Adam: I’ll have to get the book out later, figure out what that was.
[0:48:32 – 0:48:34] Erik: I think I got a picture of it.
[0:48:35 – 0:48:39] Erik: Well, for the rest of the night, we are going to be finding ourselves…
[0:48:41 – 0:48:50] Erik: Trying to get out of these wet clothes in a way that does not allow thousands of mosquitoes to bite our very…
[0:48:51 – 0:49:02] Erik: The tiniest bits of us that have not been bitten up may very well be bitten up here in the near future when these clothes come off and we quickly jump into hammocks.
[0:49:03 – 0:49:11] Adam: Yeah, I think I’m going to get inside the hammock, inside the net, and then take off the white clothes and just sleep naked inside.
[0:49:11 – 0:49:13] Adam: Hopefully that works.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:15] Adam: I feel like I’m being bit so much that…
[0:49:16 – 0:49:17] Adam: My body is turned off the bite meter.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:23] Adam: My bite meters are turned all the way down because I’m like, I’m sure I’m being bit right now, but I can’t even feel anything.
[0:49:23 – 0:49:24] Adam: I’m numb to it, Eric.
[0:49:25 – 0:49:30] Erik: My elbows are, I can feel my elbows getting consistently bit during this entire conversation.
[0:49:30 – 0:49:33] Erik: I’m sure they just look like cottage cheese at this point.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:35] Adam: Good thing we didn’t bring that for the salad.
[0:49:37 – 0:49:38] Adam: No cottage cheese for the salad.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:39] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:49:39 – 0:49:41] Adam: Just scrape some of your elbow in there, though.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:45] Erik: Did you, before we leave, want to say anything else about what we had for dinner?
[0:49:46 – 0:49:48] Erik: One of the saddest dinners we’ve ever experienced.
[0:49:49 – 0:49:49] Adam: Give me the microphone.
[0:49:50 – 0:49:51] Adam: Give me the microphone.
[0:49:52 – 0:49:53] Adam: Yeah, are we going to talk about it?
[0:49:55 – 0:49:58] Adam: Literally the worst camp dinner I’ve ever had.
[0:49:58 – 0:50:00] Bob: No, I mean, let’s take that back.
[0:50:01 – 0:50:01] Adam: I mean, at least…
[0:50:02 – 0:50:03] Adam: At least it was fresh meat.
[0:50:04 – 0:50:05] Adam: It was pretty sad, though.
[0:50:05 – 0:50:06] Adam: So here’s what we had.
[0:50:07 – 0:50:09] Adam: We had all these good ideas.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:13] Adam: We still have them, and we’re going to make them come true tomorrow, I think.
[0:50:13 – 0:50:14] Adam: But we rolled in here.
[0:50:14 – 0:50:16] Adam: Couldn’t get the fire going very well.
[0:50:18 – 0:50:20] Adam: Barely got set up.
[0:50:20 – 0:50:22] Adam: Eric almost got dragged out to sea by the mosquitoes.
[0:50:24 – 0:50:25] Adam: And we’re like, what are we going to do?
[0:50:25 – 0:50:29] Adam: But we had this three-pack of really nice bison burger.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:31] Adam: Burgered meat.
[0:50:31 – 0:50:32] Adam: Burgered meat.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:36] Adam: And they’re frozen when we started.
[0:50:36 – 0:50:41] Adam: But clearly thawed now in good packaging.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:44] Adam: I had to take a pretty sharp stick and really jam it in there.
[0:50:46 – 0:50:51] Adam: Keeping that stick sharp and freedom from…
[0:50:51 – 0:50:53] Adam: It was a pretty high-grade package it was in, but…
[0:50:55 – 0:50:56] Adam: Here’s the problem, though.
[0:50:56 – 0:51:00] Adam: Couldn’t get that fire started, though, so I still have this, like, bloody plastic.
[0:51:00 – 0:51:01] Adam: What are we going to do about it?
[0:51:03 – 0:51:04] Adam: He’s shaking his head.
[0:51:04 – 0:51:06] Erik: I’m just hoping that we get taken away by bears.
[0:51:07 – 0:51:08] Erik: Brother Andrew, are you out there?
[0:51:08 – 0:51:09] Erik: Are you listening?
[0:51:12 – 0:51:27] Adam: So I’m literally frying up the three bison burgers on the gas with the frying pan on top of the fire grate, which is a new style fire grate, of course, Allen 1.
[0:51:28 – 0:51:30] Erik: Paying attention at home, it’s a Nina foundry.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:37] Adam: Nina crap, but it does allow you to just set up the little gas burner right on top.
[0:51:38 – 0:51:40] Adam: Got these three burgers going.
[0:51:40 – 0:51:45] Adam: Three 8-inch white flour tortillas.
[0:51:46 – 0:51:47] Adam: Tortillas.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:48] Adam: That’s what we got going on.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:51] Adam: Then I’m chopping these burgers in half as they’re frying.
[0:51:52 – 0:51:59] Adam: Eric’s, like, setting up his hammock and trying to get the bug net up as, you know, as best he could.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:01] Adam: And we got it going.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:04] Adam: I’m like, we swore we had some hot sauce.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:27] Adam: any kind of seasoning there’s nothing so it was just ended up this is the final product it’s it’s literally one of the funnier dinners i’ve ever had in the entire history of me going in this park just burgered bison chopped up inside of white flour tortilla yeah just meat meat and tortilla that’s all it was
[0:52:28 – 0:52:34] Adam: While I’m, like, I just, like, kind of lift the bug net up, jam a little in, chew on it.
[0:52:34 – 0:52:35] Adam: That was the dinner.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:39] Adam: So that’s how that’s going.
[0:52:40 – 0:52:45] Adam: But, you know, it’s all uphill from here, more downhill depending on your perspective.
[0:52:48 – 0:52:51] Adam: It does seem like the bugs are kind of lightening up here.
[0:52:51 – 0:52:53] Adam: Heading back into the woods.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:53] Adam: Yeah, right.
[0:52:54 – 0:52:55] Adam: They’re just waiting for us.
[0:52:55 – 0:52:56] Adam: They’re laying in wait.
[0:52:59 – 0:52:59] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:52:59 – 0:53:01] Adam: We’re going to do a lot better for breakfast, that’s for sure.
[0:53:02 – 0:53:07] Adam: And we’re not going to let this, you know, get us down in any way, you know.
[0:53:08 – 0:53:10] Adam: If anything, it’ll just make the trip a lot more fun.
[0:53:11 – 0:53:12] Adam: Yeah.
[0:53:12 – 0:53:13] Adam: It does.
[0:53:13 – 0:53:19] Adam: It makes it funnier, you know, because at the end of the trip, we’re going to be like, you know, remember that first night on Allen?
[0:53:19 – 0:53:20] Adam: Allen won.
[0:53:21 – 0:53:25] Adam: Allen won and only socked in with bugs.
[0:53:27 – 0:53:29] Adam: Yeah, we’re going to be like, man, that was nuts.
[0:53:30 – 0:53:31] Adam: That was nuts.
[0:53:31 – 0:53:32] Adam: There was a couple of times…
[0:53:32 – 0:53:36] Adam: Remember when we ate the burger meat with no hot sauce?
[0:53:36 – 0:53:39] Adam: We don’t even have one mayonnaise packet in the whole food barrel.
[0:53:39 – 0:53:41] Adam: I don’t know what’s going on right now, but…
[0:53:42 – 0:53:44] Adam: It was so buggy you could barely even, like, try and dig.
[0:53:44 – 0:53:46] Adam: So we might find the hot sauce eventually.
[0:53:47 – 0:53:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:53:47 – 0:53:53] Adam: That would be funnier if we found it tomorrow, like, having steak dinner on Davis, steak lunch.
[0:53:53 – 0:53:58] Erik: I swear, I can picture me throwing that bottle of hot sauce into the food barrel.
[0:53:58 – 0:53:59] Erik: I know.
[0:53:59 – 0:54:00] Adam: I don’t know where it is.
[0:54:00 – 0:54:05] Adam: Well, it’s probably, like, it’s probably just, like, in your, you know, Stolquist or something.
[0:54:05 – 0:54:06] Adam: It’s probably in the Dilden.
[0:54:06 – 0:54:07] Adam: Did you check there?
[0:54:08 – 0:54:10] Erik: I haven’t yet, but at this point it’s too late.
[0:54:10 – 0:54:13] Erik: All of the bison meat has been consumed.
[0:54:14 – 0:54:23] Adam: All right, coming to you live for Tumble Home in the field from the one and only Allen campsite.
[0:54:24 – 0:54:25] Adam: It’s a real treat.
[0:54:25 – 0:54:28] Adam: We’re going to give you the full campsite review tomorrow, obviously.
[0:54:29 – 0:54:30] Adam: Got to wait until morning.
[0:54:31 – 0:54:36] Adam: But this has been a live report from Skeeter Camp here.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:43] Adam: on the Laurentian Divide, coming to you from the high country, covered in rain.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:45] Adam: Any last words, Eric?
[0:54:46 – 0:54:53] Adam: So far, I give this campsite an F. Hey, we’ve got to wait until morning, though, and that’s the way the system works.
[0:54:53 – 0:55:03] Adam: So until morning, we’re going to get some good rest and come back with fresh eyes and open hearts.
[0:55:04 – 0:55:13] Adam: Open Heart Surgery, that’s the name of our next podcast in which we try and kill as many mosquitoes as we can in one hour.
[0:55:15 – 0:55:18] Adam: And we turn them into humans by biting them.
[0:55:18 – 0:55:22] Adam: It’s a reverse vampire drama.
[0:55:22 – 0:55:26] Adam: Open Heart Surgery next season on Tumblewom Sports Network.
[0:55:28 – 0:55:29] Adam: He’s speechless.
[0:55:33 – 0:55:37] Bob: The stars in the sky had traversed a good part of their nightly path.
[0:55:37 – 0:55:39] Bob: It was long after midnight.
[0:55:39 – 0:55:43] Bob: Hours followed hours as we sat talking by the campfire.
[0:55:43 – 0:55:45] Bob: It was mostly Dersu who spoke.
[0:55:45 – 0:55:46] Bob: I listened with genuine pleasure.
[0:55:47 – 0:55:56] Bob: He told me about his hunting experiences, about his encounters with tigers, whom men should not shoot, for they were the gods who protected ginseng from evil people.
[0:55:57 – 0:56:00] Bob: And he spoke of spirits, floods, and many other things.
[0:56:01 – 0:56:04] Bob: On one of his taiga trips, he was attacked by a tiger and badly mauled.
[0:56:04 – 0:56:11] Bob: His wife searched for him for several days, traversing more than 125 miles, and found him finally, weak from loss of blood.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:15] Bob: She did all their hunting while he was recovering from his wounds.
[0:56:16 – 0:56:19] Bob: Then I asked him about the place where we had made our camp.
[0:56:20 – 0:56:25] Bob: He said it was close to the source of the Leifu, and that the next day we should come to our first hunting lodge.
[0:56:26 – 0:56:32] Bob: One of my companions woke up, stared at us in surprise, mumbled something, smiled, and went back to sleep.
[0:56:33 – 0:56:38] Bob: A new dawn was creeping up from where the twinkling stars kept rising in quick succession.
[0:56:39 – 0:56:44] Bob: A solemn silence reigned, and an abundant dew fell to the earth, a sure sign of fine weather.
[0:56:45 – 0:56:47] Bob: Nature, it seemed, was in repose.
[0:56:48 – 0:56:50] Bob: An hour later, the east turned red.
[0:56:50 – 0:56:51] Bob: I looked at my watch.
[0:56:51 – 0:56:53] Bob: It was six, time to rouse the cook.
[0:56:54 – 0:56:55] Bob: I shook him by his shoulder.
[0:56:56 – 0:57:01] Bob: He sat up and stretched himself with a wry face, averting his eyes from the bright blaze of the campfire.
[0:57:02 – 0:57:09] Bob: Then he noticed Dersu and murmured smilingly, look at that, a stranger, and pulled on his boots.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:15] Erik: All right, faculties.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:17] Erik: back in 100%?
[0:57:17 – 0:57:22] Erik: I don’t know if you could tell, but last night we were a little frazzled.
[0:57:23 – 0:57:24] Erik: It is morning on Allen.
[0:57:24 – 0:57:25] Erik: Only one.
[0:57:25 – 0:57:27] Erik: The one and only Allen.
[0:57:27 – 0:57:32] Erik: Yeah, the rain was replaced in frequency and heaviness by mosquitoes and one of the
[0:57:44 – 0:57:45] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:57:45 – 0:57:47] Erik: I don’t know if sad is the word.
[0:57:50 – 0:57:51] Erik: How would you describe last night’s dinner?
[0:57:52 – 0:57:52] Erik: Forlorn.
[0:57:54 – 0:57:55] Adam: Loathsome.
[0:57:55 – 0:57:55] Adam: Loathsome.
[0:57:56 – 0:57:57] Adam: No, it was really good, actually.
[0:57:57 – 0:58:01] Adam: And I’m still kind of full, actually, so it did its job.
[0:58:01 – 0:58:02] Adam: It was austere.
[0:58:02 – 0:58:02] Erik: There you go.
[0:58:03 – 0:58:05] Erik: Much like this campsite, it was Spartan.
[0:58:10 – 0:58:39] Erik: oh boy we gotta stick with that for at least through breakfast uh yeah yeah so uh yeah i love uh we were joking uh already about how we uh we’re regaling you with uh tales of future culinary exquisitries and we just ended up just horsing half patties of burgered bison meat with nothing on a tortilla into our faces while like pacing to try to like kind of think we were getting away from the bugs i feel kind of bad for the bison
[0:58:41 – 0:59:03] Adam: we did that bison dirty yeah what did that bison die for it was a really fine burger if we’re gonna have burger dinner you know that was probably the nicest way we could have done it uh eric did find the hot sauce this morning so just plain i think that was the worst part like we have like some stuff but we wanted to save it for future um you know meals so like we just didn’t put anything on them that’s the
[0:59:05 – 0:59:06] Adam: But it got the job done.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:14] Adam: Sometimes when you find yourself in that situation, you just got to get a quick and fast dinner in there and then head for bed.
[0:59:14 – 0:59:17] Adam: So I made the right call because it was horrible out here with the amount of bugs.
[0:59:17 – 0:59:20] Adam: But they’re not so bad this morning.
[0:59:20 – 0:59:20] Erik: They aren’t.
[0:59:20 – 0:59:22] Erik: They come in light waves.
[0:59:22 – 0:59:33] Erik: But I did rip open one of those adult Lunchables with the cheese and prosciutto and whatever else and just shoved a bunch of that into a tortilla at the end because I was like, I need something in here.
[0:59:33 – 0:59:37] Erik: So I was just biting into half-inch thick sliced…
[0:59:38 – 0:59:40] Erik: I didn’t even pull the slices apart.
[0:59:40 – 0:59:44] Erik: I just grabbed the whole wad of prosciutto and mashed it into the burger.
[0:59:44 – 0:59:44] Erik: Yeah.
[0:59:45 – 0:59:50] Adam: I didn’t add anything, but I did have an adult Lunchable, so I had, like, chocolate-covered almonds at one point.
[0:59:50 – 0:59:52] Adam: So, I mean, it wasn’t just burger meat dinner.
[0:59:52 – 0:59:57] Adam: We had, you know, some nice wine, too, and good times out here in Allen.
[0:59:57 – 0:59:59] Erik: Yeah, it was fine.
[0:59:59 – 1:00:00] Erik: We got chased early.
[1:00:00 – 1:00:05] Erik: Didn’t get a fire started, so going back to Ensign 4.
[1:00:06 – 1:00:07] Adam: Yeah, that’s disturbing.
[1:00:07 – 1:00:15] Erik: Well, ensign one, night four, back-to-back nights camping out here without a fire, one of our own choosing.
[1:00:16 – 1:00:24] Erik: Last night was, I have nary been skunked on the getting a fire going in some of the most inclement conditions.
[1:00:24 – 1:00:26] Erik: There’s been some days up in Quetico that…
[1:00:27 – 1:00:29] Erik: I am shocked we were able to get a fire started.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:37] Adam: If we had a little bit more daylight to look around or maybe go for a paddle to find something a little more dry, there’s just not a whole lot to choose from in here.
[1:00:37 – 1:00:43] Adam: I went way back behind the brown volcano, came back with a pretty wet piece of wood that was very sad.
[1:00:43 – 1:00:47] Adam: I mean, it was throwing dust when you sawed it, but it probably was no good.
[1:00:47 – 1:00:54] Adam: So, yeah, I can’t remember the last time, if ever, that I just didn’t have a fire because we couldn’t get one to light.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:55] Adam: Eric tried hard.
[1:00:56 – 1:01:03] Adam: Well, I messed around with some other stuff, and, you know, the Grand Forest Brook was splitting it pretty nice, though.
[1:01:04 – 1:01:04] Adam: It was.
[1:01:04 – 1:01:07] Adam: I mean, we had some, like, super thin little kindlings made up.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:09] Adam: Just wouldn’t go.
[1:01:09 – 1:01:21] Erik: Yeah, I couldn’t believe it, and I think that the, yeah, we mentioned this last night, but even the birch bark, like when that’s soaking wet, will eventually kind of just catch and go, and even that was just like, no.
[1:01:21 – 1:01:31] Erik: I don’t know if that would have helped the situation with the bugs, if a fire would have really been the best situation for us to, it probably would have encouraged us to sit out here and just get even more burger chewed, which…
[1:01:32 – 1:01:40] Erik: Speaking of which, my right arm looked like cottaged meat this morning because it was pressing up against the hammock and getting freely suckled on.
[1:01:41 – 1:01:43] Adam: Yeah, I did pretty good at burrowing in.
[1:01:43 – 1:01:46] Adam: I don’t think I got too chewed on in the night.
[1:01:46 – 1:01:49] Adam: But boy, it’s always a horrible feeling when you wake up.
[1:01:49 – 1:01:53] Adam: It’s sort of a, I don’t know, what do you call this?
[1:01:53 – 1:01:54] Adam: It’s a horrible feeling.
[1:01:54 – 1:02:00] Adam: You wake up and see literally 111 mosquitoes right in front of your face on the netting.
[1:02:00 – 1:02:03] Adam: But it’s also like, well, good thing I have the netting, right?
[1:02:04 – 1:02:08] Adam: So I don’t know what you call that feeling because it’s not a good one, but it is also sort of satisfying.
[1:02:09 – 1:02:21] Erik: Well, it’s satisfying if you don’t have to get out of the netting anytime soon, but it is a horrifying feeling if you are dreaming, like basically having dreams where you’re wetting the bed, but you’re not actually wetting the bed.
[1:02:22 – 1:02:23] Erik: You can just tell you have to pee that bad.
[1:02:23 – 1:02:24] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[1:02:25 – 1:02:30] Erik: Like, that is the situation where you just, like, you consider it.
[1:02:30 – 1:02:33] Erik: You consider rolling over and pressing it through the screen.
[1:02:33 – 1:02:34] Erik: I’m not going to lie.
[1:02:35 – 1:02:41] Adam: I was having dreams on the other side of the spectrum of, like, we were in, like, the desert southwest committing crimes.
[1:02:41 – 1:02:42] Adam: Water?
[1:02:43 – 1:02:45] Adam: Yeah, well, water crimes in the west.
[1:02:45 – 1:02:48] Adam: I was so thirsty, like, our mule couldn’t find the water.
[1:02:49 – 1:02:49] Adam: It was horrible.
[1:02:49 – 1:02:50] Adam: I had to get up pretty early.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:52] Adam: I didn’t have the best set.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:53] Adam: It was a little too loose, maybe, and…
[1:02:54 – 1:02:58] Adam: The bugs were after me, and I just wanted to get out of there and start my day.
[1:02:58 – 1:03:03] Adam: So I did get out here and got some water heating for the cowboy coffee.
[1:03:03 – 1:03:06] Adam: And then Eric comes out, and he had these fancy guiseppi.
[1:03:06 – 1:03:07] Bob: Hey, guiseppi.
[1:03:07 – 1:03:08] Bob: What are they called?
[1:03:09 – 1:03:09] Erik: Oh.
[1:03:09 – 1:03:10] Adam: The fancy coffees?
[1:03:10 – 1:03:12] Erik: The Vias from Starbucks.
[1:03:12 – 1:03:14] Erik: You were out here drinking the horse coffee.
[1:03:14 – 1:03:16] Adam: The stupid horse coffee.
[1:03:17 – 1:03:18] Adam: Very coarse grind.
[1:03:19 – 1:03:19] Adam: Instant coffee.
[1:03:20 – 1:03:22] Adam: And here comes Eric with the fancy Italian blends.
[1:03:23 – 1:03:26] Adam: But I did get to see Loon take off.
[1:03:26 – 1:03:28] Adam: I think Eric heard it from the hammock.
[1:03:28 – 1:03:34] Adam: And then he came back around and landed like 30 minutes later in the same exact spot he had taken off from.
[1:03:34 – 1:03:34] Bob: Very…
[1:03:35 – 1:03:35] Adam: Very magical.
[1:03:36 – 1:03:38] Erik: I heard it land as majestically as Sully on the Hudson.
[1:03:41 – 1:03:43] Adam: Glider on in.
[1:03:43 – 1:03:45] Adam: So we had some coffee.
[1:03:45 – 1:03:48] Adam: It was like kind of a triple W kind of morning.
[1:03:50 – 1:03:53] Adam: Water, wine, and some other stuff.
[1:03:53 – 1:03:55] Adam: And now we got some coffee.
[1:03:56 – 1:03:57] Adam: Juanis.
[1:03:57 – 1:03:58] Adam: Juanis.
[1:03:59 – 1:04:01] Adam: Anyhow, it’s…
[1:04:01 – 1:04:05] Adam: We’re going to, of course, do a beautiful campsite review of Allen 1.
[1:04:08 – 1:04:08] Adam: It’s okay.
[1:04:08 – 1:04:10] Adam: What was the phrase from that site?
[1:04:10 – 1:04:11] Adam: For the good times.
[1:04:12 – 1:04:13] Adam: I don’t know what we were saying.
[1:04:14 – 1:04:14] Adam: We’re going to get there.
[1:04:14 – 1:04:18] Adam: But, yeah, first off, we’ve got to have some breakfast, I think.
[1:04:18 – 1:04:25] Adam: So in honor of Andrew, the proud sponsor of the –
[1:04:26 – 1:04:27] Adam: the beers in the lot.
[1:04:27 – 1:04:28] Adam: Lot beers.
[1:04:28 – 1:04:30] Adam: Lot beers to start this show.
[1:04:31 – 1:04:33] Adam: This may be the final track of this show.
[1:04:33 – 1:04:44] Adam: I think we’re going to close her out with a tribute to Andrew, which, of course, he included some oatmeal in the bag with the beers intended, I assume, for mouth mixing.
[1:04:45 – 1:04:54] Adam: And in the interest of just getting out of this campsite as fast as possible, and we’ve got a longer day planned, and we still have, like, basically no wind, so…
[1:04:55 – 1:04:59] Adam: We’re just going to try and, like, do the classic mouth mixer departure.
[1:04:59 – 1:05:05] Adam: Have ourselves a little bit of oatmeal straight into the mouth, and then we’ll do the campster review.
[1:05:05 – 1:05:08] Adam: I guess we could… Do we want to do the mouth mixer on camera?
[1:05:08 – 1:05:13] Adam: This will be our first in-the-field mouth mixer, but I think we already, like, captured mouth mixer audio.
[1:05:13 – 1:05:16] Adam: I don’t know if we need to really do that to our listeners, but we can shake the packets.
[1:05:18 – 1:05:18] Adam: There they are.
[1:05:18 – 1:05:19] Adam: We got them ready.
[1:05:19 – 1:05:23] Adam: So after we do the campster review, I guess we’ll… We don’t need to do that on the mics, but…
[1:05:25 – 1:05:27] Adam: Somebody could start and then pass the mic.
[1:05:27 – 1:05:27] Adam: I’ll pass the mic.
[1:05:27 – 1:05:28] Adam: I’ll start.
[1:05:29 – 1:05:29] Adam: I am hungry.
[1:05:30 – 1:05:30] Erik: There you go.
[1:05:30 – 1:05:36] Erik: Yeah, I believe we did mix some oatmeal in the mouth in studio, but never in the field.
[1:05:38 – 1:05:48] Erik: Yeah, I remember it starts out very dry, takes a little bit for your mouth to come to terms with the amount of seasoning that’s in there and what have you.
[1:05:49 – 1:05:54] Erik: Powdered sugars and we’re doing apples and cinnamon this morning.
[1:05:55 – 1:05:55] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:05:55 – 1:05:57] Erik: He’s got the technique down.
[1:05:57 – 1:06:01] Erik: What do you think about this?
[1:06:02 – 1:06:04] Erik: What are we so far this morning?
[1:06:05 – 1:06:05] Erik: It’s amazing.
[1:06:05 – 1:06:11] Erik: Less than 24 hours in, the mind’s just kind of out here in the park without…
[1:06:12 – 1:06:23] Erik: immediate connections to screens or needs of being places or lists or, God forbid, a post office or a bank.
[1:06:24 – 1:06:25] Erik: Where the mind wanders.
[1:06:26 – 1:06:32] Erik: We’ve already had some incredible off-the-cuff jukebox experiences.
[1:06:32 – 1:06:34] Erik: We’ve been singing some Crazy Town.
[1:06:36 – 1:06:37] Erik: TumbleHomeCast at gmail.com.
[1:06:37 – 1:06:40] Erik: Does anybody remember Butterfly by Crazy Town?
[1:06:40 – 1:06:40] Erik: No.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:44] Erik: How would you describe that genre of music?
[1:06:44 – 1:06:52] Erik: The early 2000s were just a wild, wild west of throwing anything up against the wall and seeing if it was going to stick.
[1:06:53 – 1:06:53] Erik: Remember Len?
[1:06:53 – 1:06:56] Erik: No.
[1:06:56 – 1:07:03] Erik: They were the brother and sister duo that were riding around on, speaking of Italian, Vespa down the street.
[1:07:03 – 1:07:04] Erik: Steal My Sunshine, remember that one?
[1:07:04 – 1:07:08] Adam: Oh, yeah, yeah.
[1:07:09 – 1:07:10] SPEAKER_01: Steal My Sunshine.
[1:07:10 – 1:07:11] Erik: Exactly.
[1:07:11 – 1:07:11] Erik: Nailed it.
[1:07:12 – 1:07:18] Erik: Marcy Playground we sang, Closing Time, and you were trying to figure out the lyrics to a Sublime song.
[1:07:19 – 1:07:20] Erik: We did figure those out.
[1:07:20 – 1:07:21] Erik: No, and we never will.
[1:07:22 – 1:07:25] Erik: We’ll never speak of Sublime ever again.
[1:07:26 – 1:07:26] Adam: There you go.
[1:07:28 – 1:07:30] Erik: But Crazy Town is alive and well in my heart.
[1:07:31 – 1:07:31] Erik: Yeah, I get that.
[1:07:31 – 1:07:32] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:32 – 1:07:34] Adam: I don’t think I have that downloaded.
[1:07:34 – 1:07:36] Adam: I do have some albums downloaded.
[1:07:37 – 1:07:40] Adam: Always have Dark Side of the Moon on there for sure.
[1:07:40 – 1:07:48] Adam: You heard earlier, Eric’s requested album was Freewheel and Bob Dylan.
[1:07:48 – 1:07:52] Adam: Of course, we have Drip Field by Goose and the Grace Ives album.
[1:07:53 – 1:07:54] Adam: What’s the Grace Ives album, Eric?
[1:07:55 – 1:07:55] Adam: Janky Star.
[1:07:55 – 1:07:56] Adam: Janky Star.
[1:07:58 – 1:07:58] Adam: Yes.
[1:07:59 – 1:08:01] Adam: Everybody in the sector heard that.
[1:08:02 – 1:08:04] Adam: We still haven’t seen anybody, which has been a nice thing.
[1:08:04 – 1:08:08] Adam: And there’s, like I said, pretty much dead calm reflections out here.
[1:08:08 – 1:08:10] Adam: A little bit of DCR with some morning mist.
[1:08:11 – 1:08:12] Adam: And…
[1:08:13 – 1:08:19] Adam: Yeah, we’re supposed to get some west wind here eventually, and we still have quite a bit westward motion to get to.
[1:08:19 – 1:08:25] Adam: So hopefully we can get west and beat that afternoon west wind before we make our turn.
[1:08:25 – 1:08:29] Adam: We have our special destination planned for lunch, which I cannot say.
[1:08:30 – 1:08:30] Adam: I’ve said too much already.
[1:08:33 – 1:08:34] Adam: Well, maybe we did.
[1:08:34 – 1:08:35] Erik: Dried apple.
[1:08:36 – 1:08:37] Erik: Take it easy.
[1:08:38 – 1:08:41] Erik: We said we were assaulting our second assault on Davis.
[1:08:41 – 1:08:42] Adam: All right, so we’re aiming for Davis for lunch.
[1:08:44 – 1:08:49] Erik: We won’t reveal the secret culinary delights that are going to occur on Davis.
[1:08:50 – 1:08:53] Adam: 202, the culinary delights are not going to appear in 202.
[1:08:54 – 1:08:58] Adam: If you’ve listened this far waiting for them, you just have to wait another week for 203.
[1:08:59 – 1:09:00] Adam: What was that?
[1:09:00 – 1:09:06] Adam: We just had a baby bass coming right up on our shoreline.
[1:09:07 – 1:09:09] Erik: Salt in these, I think.
[1:09:09 – 1:09:09] Erik: They are salty.
[1:09:09 – 1:09:10] Adam: Oh, they’re salty.
[1:09:11 – 1:09:12] Adam: Well, that’s how I get you going.
[1:09:12 – 1:09:14] Adam: I need those electrolytes.
[1:09:15 – 1:09:22] Erik: I don’t know if my faculties were just so out of whack last night when we were recording in the cloud of mosquitoes.
[1:09:22 – 1:09:23] UNKNOWN: Mm-hmm.
[1:09:23 – 1:09:29] Erik: I remember at one point there was one that was, like, growing to the size of a goiter on your neck, and I just, like, couldn’t get around to, like, telling you to get it.
[1:09:30 – 1:09:31] Erik: It was, like, entirely…
[1:09:31 – 1:09:33] Erik: It was, like, ballooned up.
[1:09:33 – 1:09:36] Erik: It was like that Gary Larson cartoon where the one hits an artery or whatever.
[1:09:36 – 1:09:39] Erik: Yeah, he got it right.
[1:09:39 – 1:09:40] Adam: Man lining.
[1:09:40 – 1:09:42] Erik: Yeah, he was on the carotid.
[1:09:42 – 1:09:42] Erik: I feel.
[1:09:42 – 1:09:48] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[1:09:48 – 1:09:49] Adam: It sounds about…
[1:09:51 – 1:09:53] Adam: One hand above the trees over here now.
[1:09:54 – 1:09:55] Adam: It’s still pretty early.
[1:09:55 – 1:09:57] Adam: I feel like we have a long day ahead.
[1:09:57 – 1:09:57] Adam: 6.05.
[1:09:57 – 1:09:58] Bob: Yeah, I know.
[1:09:58 – 1:10:05] Adam: I mean, I was up pretty much at the crack of dawn reading some Dursu by the lack of the fire.
[1:10:05 – 1:10:06] Adam: Just sitting out here on the rocks.
[1:10:07 – 1:10:08] Adam: I guess we could start there.
[1:10:09 – 1:10:10] Adam: The landing here on Allen 1.
[1:10:11 – 1:10:17] Adam: There’s a pretty nice flatted rock with a medium slope down into the lake facing north.
[1:10:18 – 1:10:43] Adam: um we did get some stars last night um so yeah this would be our had we hadn’t uh you know some vindley’s out this would be a good spot for vindley viewing it’s pure northern view maybe a little northeast off the rock here if you’re following at home on your fisher map you can see where we are we call the apples and salt apples and salt no cinnamon it’s all salt ingredients list salt but comes before cinnamon
[1:10:43 – 1:10:46] Erik: Cinnamon’s the last ingredient.
[1:10:46 – 1:10:47] Adam: Cinnamon ain’t cheap.
[1:10:48 – 1:10:49] Adam: What kind of cinnamon?
[1:10:49 – 1:10:50] Adam: Just say cinnamon?
[1:10:50 – 1:10:51] Erik: Turkish cinnamon.
[1:10:51 – 1:10:52] Adam: Turkish cinnamon.
[1:10:52 – 1:10:53] Adam: That stuff ain’t cheap.
[1:10:55 – 1:10:56] Adam: So that’s why it’s last.
[1:10:57 – 1:10:59] Adam: Just a pinch of the Turkish cinnamon in there.
[1:11:00 – 1:11:01] Adam: Landing’s pretty good, though.
[1:11:01 – 1:11:08] Adam: I mean, you know, it’s one of those where you pull up to it, it’s kind of slippery because it was raining, you know, and so the whole rock face was wet, but…
[1:11:09 – 1:11:18] Erik: I mean, it’s fine if you’re, if you’re, uh, if you don’t have your fine, your finest, uh, leather boots that you’re trying to keep dry.
[1:11:19 – 1:11:27] Erik: But yeah, if you’re looking to get that dry foot experience, it’s, uh, yeah, it’s, it’s your classic sloping Canadian shield.
[1:11:27 – 1:11:33] Erik: So like, am I gonna blow out a groin trying to stretch between the canoe as it drifts away from shore?
[1:11:33 – 1:11:36] Erik: Or am I going to just get in the water?
[1:11:36 – 1:11:38] Erik: And if that’s the case, then it’s a fine landing.
[1:11:38 – 1:11:47] Adam: Well, there’s kind of like a shelf because the front part is just slopey straight down in, but then there is a little bit of a shelf over here, which is where we ended up unloading.
[1:11:47 – 1:11:49] Adam: So actually that worked out just fine.
[1:11:50 – 1:11:57] Adam: I did walk back because we’re on kind of a peninsula and there is sort of an alternate landing off the backside, but I don’t know if that would like bump the grade up at all.
[1:11:57 – 1:12:00] Adam: So we’re not going to include that, but it is back there.
[1:12:01 – 1:12:03] Adam: C plus landing for Eric.
[1:12:03 – 1:12:04] Adam: I’ll concur.
[1:12:05 – 1:12:06] Adam: It’s a nice rock to sit on though.
[1:12:07 – 1:12:09] Adam: But we don’t really grade sit and rock.
[1:12:10 – 1:12:12] Adam: But yeah, this would be a good spot to throw some slip bobbers for sure.
[1:12:12 – 1:12:15] Adam: Of course, as we mentioned, we just left the fishing rods at home.
[1:12:15 – 1:12:19] Erik: I don’t think there’s anything worthwhile in Allen though.
[1:12:19 – 1:12:20] Erik: I think there’s walleye.
[1:12:20 – 1:12:21] Adam: Really?
[1:12:21 – 1:12:21] Erik: Yeah.
[1:12:21 – 1:12:22] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:12:22 – 1:12:24] Erik: Well, C plus.
[1:12:24 – 1:12:27] Erik: Let’s get that green fishing book out and see what it says.
[1:12:27 – 1:12:27] Erik: All right.
[1:12:28 – 1:12:28] Adam: We’ll do that.
[1:12:30 – 1:12:33] Adam: And the next track, fire grate.
[1:12:33 – 1:12:34] Adam: Lack of a fire.
[1:12:34 – 1:12:36] Adam: I don’t think we can hold that against this fire grate.
[1:12:37 – 1:12:40] Adam: Because it’s right behind us here, kind of just at the edge of this rock.
[1:12:41 – 1:12:42] Adam: It’s in a good spot.
[1:12:43 – 1:12:45] Adam: You know, it’s a new style Nina.
[1:12:46 – 1:12:47] Adam: Pretty good shape.
[1:12:48 – 1:12:50] Adam: I’d say it’s in great condition.
[1:12:50 – 1:12:53] Adam: It’s level and a decent amount of rock around it.
[1:12:53 – 1:12:55] Adam: Plenty of clearance in there.
[1:12:55 – 1:13:00] Adam: I can’t really say that the fire grade is the problem with the lack of the fire.
[1:13:00 – 1:13:01] Adam: But we just weren’t able to enjoy it.
[1:13:02 – 1:13:04] Adam: you know, to its full potential.
[1:13:05 – 1:13:08] Adam: So that hurts, you know, that hurts a little, but I’m going to try not to hold it against it.
[1:13:08 – 1:13:10] Adam: Uh, it’s got a fun little bench.
[1:13:10 – 1:13:11] Adam: What’d you describe?
[1:13:11 – 1:13:13] Adam: You think this is some sort of logging operation bench?
[1:13:13 – 1:13:17] Erik: It’s like gotta be something from an old, I don’t know.
[1:13:17 – 1:13:21] Erik: You know, you see all kinds of camp furniture, but rarely do you see the, uh,
[1:13:22 – 1:13:26] Erik: uh, holes in logs filled with wooden dowels.
[1:13:26 – 1:13:29] Erik: Like they seem like they came from something else.
[1:13:29 – 1:13:39] Erik: It seems like too, uh, it seems too manufactured for somebody to like spend the time to like whittle down a wooden dowel to like fill in a screw hole.
[1:13:39 – 1:13:45] Erik: Cause there, and there, there’s two of them on either end and it is like a perfect half log, uh,
[1:13:45 – 1:13:47] Erik: I have no idea what it could have come from, though.
[1:13:47 – 1:13:53] Erik: Maybe it’s from Charlie’s old trapping cabin, which is in this neck of the woods up on Moon, West Moon.
[1:13:53 – 1:13:56] Adam: Yeah, I agree, too.
[1:13:56 – 1:13:59] Adam: It looks like it’s out of place here, but it is nice and flat.
[1:14:00 – 1:14:09] Adam: And we’ve got the cowboy coffee, the map, a cup, the entire silverware roll, and then the plate and the old frying panel hanging out over there.
[1:14:10 – 1:14:10] Adam: No problems.
[1:14:10 – 1:14:11] Adam: Nothing’s rolling off that thing.
[1:14:12 – 1:14:13] Adam: But it didn’t really sit on it.
[1:14:13 – 1:14:15] Adam: It was more of a table than a bench.
[1:14:15 – 1:14:16] Adam: We do have our chairs, of course.
[1:14:16 – 1:14:20] Erik: This is the perfect amount, in my opinion, of camp furniture.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:22] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:14:22 – 1:14:26] Erik: Sometimes it’s nice when you get the full enclosed square of…
[1:14:28 – 1:14:49] Adam: stacked logs but i don’t like that i don’t either i don’t need a corral i like this it’s one bench facing the nice looking fire uh great like looking out over the lake with this rock we’re sitting on it’s the perfect amount i’m gonna give that pretty high marks for the fire grade it’s probably the best feature of this campsite yeah and that that’s a personal uh that’s subjective i feel the uh
[1:14:50 – 1:15:11] Erik: the camp furniture gets a little out of hand sometimes at the more popular sites where it’s just like logs stacked on logs and all it does is just it’s just asking for you to like lose something or not care if like a wrapper falls in it it’s almost like they turn into like like wood couches where it’s like god who knows what’s in there yeah if you’re finding change
[1:15:12 – 1:15:17] Erik: If you’re finding change at a Boundary Waters campsite, it’s too far gone.
[1:15:17 – 1:15:18] Erik: Maybe take a couple of logs off.
[1:15:18 – 1:15:27] Erik: It’s a fine line, though, because sometimes you do find that site up on Gogebic where it’s the nice little rock recliners.
[1:15:27 – 1:15:28] Erik: There’s just two of them, and it’s kind of nice.
[1:15:28 – 1:15:29] Erik: It’s not overblown.
[1:15:30 – 1:15:37] Erik: But then you get to some of those where it’s half of a fucking cabin built up where it’s just fully enclosed.
[1:15:37 – 1:15:40] Erik: You have to go through a gate to get into the fire area.
[1:15:40 – 1:15:41] Adam: It’s a combination.
[1:15:41 – 1:15:42] Adam: Yeah, right?
[1:15:43 – 1:15:44] Bob: Yeah, I agree.
[1:15:44 – 1:15:46] Bob: These are matters of taste.
[1:15:46 – 1:15:48] Adam: But I’m going to give the fire pit area a solid A.
[1:15:49 – 1:15:49] Adam: Just a solid A.
[1:15:49 – 1:15:52] Adam: It’s a really nice fire pit area.
[1:15:52 – 1:15:53] Adam: I remember paddling by this.
[1:15:53 – 1:15:54] Adam: It must have been 2013.
[1:15:56 – 1:16:23] Adam: somewhere around them so you know darn near a decade ago was the only other time i’ve been on allen paddled through here in a solo canoe uh ty are you listening the solo canoe you now have who got he got from the other guy that i sold it to the old mad uh river solo boat that uh fiberglass number that was a real fast one it still is yeah it’s still out there i don’t own that boat anymore um but uh ty if you’re listening
[1:16:24 – 1:16:26] Adam: That boat was on Allen the last time I was here.
[1:16:27 – 1:16:39] Adam: 2013, I’m going to say, and paddled through, and I remember just looking back and seeing this campsite and thinking, that looks like a pretty nice fire-grade area right up on the lake, and I’d like to stay there someday.
[1:16:39 – 1:16:46] Adam: And I never thought that it would be under the circumstances we arrived in last night, but I’m glad we finally got here.
[1:16:46 – 1:16:48] Adam: I’ve always wanted to stay on this site.
[1:16:48 – 1:16:52] Adam: Just for seeing this fire great.
[1:16:52 – 1:16:53] Erik: No, yeah, exactly.
[1:16:53 – 1:16:59] Erik: I feel the same way on trips that I’ve gone by this in the past where it’s never been right timing and just never really has made sense.
[1:17:00 – 1:17:15] Erik: And, yeah, it’s always kind of been noticeable because I knew as I was looking at the map, I’m like, well, I know there’s a decent-looking site on Allen, or we could push it to Pillsbury where I’m pretty sure the sites are just your –
[1:17:17 – 1:17:18] Erik: You’re substandard.
[1:17:18 – 1:17:23] Erik: You can picture, all of you listening can picture them where they’re just like up on a flat shoreline.
[1:17:23 – 1:17:32] Erik: Yeah, they’re like those first like three sites on Caribou out of Liz where they’re just like all the same kind of layout.
[1:17:32 – 1:17:38] Erik: They’re all just a slanted rock and maybe, yeah, nothing necessarily unique about it.
[1:17:38 – 1:17:41] Erik: Um, that’s what I picture the ones on Pillsbury.
[1:17:41 – 1:17:45] Erik: Now, when we go by in a little bit here, I could be wrong, but that’s what I feel like we would have ended up running into.
[1:17:45 – 1:17:49] Erik: And I didn’t necessarily feel like portaging another hundred rods yesterday.
[1:17:49 – 1:17:53] Adam: We were running out of light, you know, like we always say, you gotta go with the flow and.
[1:17:53 – 1:17:55] Adam: The flow directed us perfectly here to Allen.
[1:17:56 – 1:17:58] Adam: And so I finally got back here.
[1:17:58 – 1:18:00] Adam: It’s funny how that works.
[1:18:00 – 1:18:06] Adam: You know, at the time I’d gone by there, I was like, oh, I’m certain I’ll come back to Allen within the next year or two and try that site out.
[1:18:06 – 1:18:10] Adam: And then one year turned into eight real quick.
[1:18:11 – 1:18:12] Erik: Yeah, that’ll happen.
[1:18:12 – 1:18:14] Adam: So it’s just interesting how that works.
[1:18:14 – 1:18:20] Adam: So this isn’t necessarily new water, but it does sort of feel like new water when it’s been that long since you’ve been somewhere, you know.
[1:18:21 – 1:18:24] Erik: Yeah, well, it’s all new water from here to the west for you for a little while.
[1:18:24 – 1:18:27] Adam: Actually, I was looking at the map this morning, and that’s not entirely true.
[1:18:27 – 1:18:36] Bob: I am getting some new water, but then we did at one point go through Kiskadena and Omega going down to Winchell after we had stayed at Bandedad that one time.
[1:18:36 – 1:18:38] Adam: So we’re going to go through a couple new.
[1:18:38 – 1:18:44] Adam: Henson and Pillsbury will be new for me, and anything west of this campsite on Allen is all new water technically.
[1:18:44 – 1:18:49] Adam: But then we’ll reenter Omega once we get past the spot where you go down to Winchell.
[1:18:50 – 1:18:52] Adam: Then we’ll be back kind of on the map for a little bit.
[1:18:52 – 1:18:55] Adam: But then we’re back into new water once we go south off of Kiskadena.
[1:18:56 – 1:19:09] Erik: Yeah, I would say in terms of portages and campsites and, like, clearly this is on a route.
[1:19:11 – 1:19:13] Erik: I’m not going to say it’s a guarantee, but I would say…
[1:19:14 – 1:19:24] Erik: Outside of maybe another two or three lakes I can think of, like, I feel like Davis might be close to the last lake that I have not been on on a major route.
[1:19:24 – 1:19:28] Adam: I was looking too, like, then there’s one north of Pillsbury going to Mead.
[1:19:28 – 1:19:31] Adam: I never went through there and whatever that lake is on the map in front of me, but…
[1:19:32 – 1:19:49] Erik: Yeah, that’s the one that the Portage, I remember I did a trip with a guy I used to work at Clearwater with early on in the days, and the Portage is mislabeled, so we just had to, we tried walking up a creek, and it was a pretty horrible experience, but it was mid-August, and it was super hot.
[1:19:49 – 1:19:50] Erik: Swallow.
[1:19:50 – 1:19:57] Erik: Yeah, the Portage from Pillsbury to Swallow is definitely much farther east on the map, and we just dragged it up a creek to get there.
[1:19:57 – 1:19:59] Adam: Not going to get to Swallow, unfortunately, today.
[1:19:59 – 1:20:01] Adam: I don’t think we’re going to do that.
[1:20:01 – 1:20:02] Adam: So I’ll be missing that one.
[1:20:02 – 1:20:05] Adam: But otherwise, yeah, all sorts of new stuff.
[1:20:05 – 1:20:06] Adam: I can’t wait to see Henson.
[1:20:06 – 1:20:07] Erik: Yeah.
[1:20:07 – 1:20:08] Erik: Henson’s fun.
[1:20:08 – 1:20:09] Erik: Omega is cool.
[1:20:09 – 1:20:11] Erik: I think Kiskadena is a little meh.
[1:20:12 – 1:20:17] Adam: Kiskadena I don’t really remember because that portage from Muskeg up to Kiskadena almost killed me.
[1:20:17 – 1:20:21] Adam: And I think I was in a mild state of shock for that paddle going through there.
[1:20:21 – 1:20:23] Adam: So that’ll be fun to see it in the other direction at least.
[1:20:24 – 1:20:26] Bob: And we’ll get some fresh memories made.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:29] Bob: Fresh memories made at Cascadena.
[1:20:29 – 1:20:30] Adam: That was pretty good.
[1:20:31 – 1:20:32] Bob: Off the fly, on the fly.
[1:20:32 – 1:20:34] Adam: What do you think about the hammock potential in here?
[1:20:34 – 1:20:37] Adam: We clearly, we got a real tight set in here.
[1:20:37 – 1:20:40] Adam: Our hammocks are right behind the fire grate area.
[1:20:40 – 1:20:42] Adam: Eric got up a nice CCS.
[1:20:43 – 1:20:45] Adam: Cook Custom Sewing.
[1:20:47 – 1:20:47] Adam: Rainfly.
[1:20:47 – 1:20:50] Adam: It looks like a 12 by 12 here right over the bench.
[1:20:50 – 1:20:53] Adam: He got that up right away because it was still raining when we got here.
[1:20:53 – 1:20:56] Adam: Eventually the rain did quit.
[1:20:56 – 1:21:02] Adam: But Eric got that up right away, and then we both got our hammock rainflies up kind of just behind that.
[1:21:02 – 1:21:06] Adam: There’s plenty of cedar, so I’ll give it high marks on the cedar.
[1:21:06 – 1:21:11] Adam: It looks like there’s maybe two reasonably sized spruce tree further back.
[1:21:13 – 1:21:16] Adam: But we’re kind of on this peninsula, so it’s a lot of balsam, a lot of cedar.
[1:21:16 – 1:21:23] Adam: But it’s open enough, and I think you could easily get a couple more hammocks back there on top of the ones we slung.
[1:21:23 – 1:21:34] Erik: I feel like the sleeping potential in this site is probably its biggest downfall, and it probably gets its lowest grade.
[1:21:34 – 1:21:35] Erik: If you’ve got a tent, good luck.
[1:21:35 – 1:21:37] Erik: There’s maybe a tiny little pad back up in there.
[1:21:38 – 1:21:38] Adam: There is.
[1:21:38 – 1:21:41] Adam: When I went back looking for wood, back by that back…
[1:21:41 – 1:21:48] Adam: like landing that I described earlier, there is a one little like flat, beautiful green spot, but it would be a small tent only.
[1:21:48 – 1:21:48] Adam: Yeah.
[1:21:48 – 1:21:51] Adam: You got a big old Coleman three room deal.
[1:21:51 – 1:21:53] Adam: You’re not going to find a spot for it here.
[1:21:54 – 1:21:56] Adam: Um, as a hammock spot, pretty good.
[1:21:58 – 1:21:59] Erik: I’d miss it.
[1:22:01 – 1:22:10] Erik: You’ve gotten better, but I love the flick of the microphone in my direction, like it’s my time to talk, and then you just bring it back immediately.
[1:22:11 – 1:22:12] Erik: Why are you letting me hold this thing?
[1:22:12 – 1:22:16] Erik: you didn’t ask me a question and then just flick it and then return it immediately to you.
[1:22:17 – 1:22:21] Erik: The dynamics of the field, Mike, are something else that I’ve missed for sure.
[1:22:24 – 1:22:30] Erik: Even the hammock setup, we’re not on any kind of really truly inspiring trees, though, either.
[1:22:31 – 1:22:36] Erik: They’re like smallish cedars and kind of a… At least you were cedar to cedar.
[1:22:36 – 1:22:39] Erik: I am cedar to cedar, so I completed the circle.
[1:22:39 – 1:22:42] Erik: Yeah, and we are sharing cedar, too.
[1:22:42 – 1:23:09] Erik: yeah but it’s nothing you know we sometimes you get those nice big pines that feels good yes this isn’t we’re not there are some white pines in the vicinity and coming down last night through the narrows of horseshoe and into allen here was just like yeah there’s some nice big whiteys out there but yeah the view here is nice i think we are we either are like right on it or we’re like a lake off the laurentian divide here so it’s just one of those skylines it’s
[1:23:10 – 1:23:11] Adam: You know, pretty flat.
[1:23:11 – 1:23:14] Adam: It’s just trees in every direction in the same level, you know.
[1:23:14 – 1:23:14] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[1:23:16 – 1:23:19] Adam: Anyhow, I’m going to say the hammocks are great, medium to great.
[1:23:20 – 1:23:21] Adam: We’re going to give the hammock potential a B.
[1:23:23 – 1:23:26] Adam: There’s plenty out there, but I was set like cedar to balsam.
[1:23:28 – 1:23:30] Adam: I need to actually have a sip of wine now that I’m thinking about that.
[1:23:31 – 1:23:33] Adam: I got sap all over my hands taking down the straps this morning.
[1:23:33 – 1:23:35] Erik: Oh, no, that’s not good.
[1:23:35 – 1:23:49] Erik: Like, I mean, if it wasn’t raining, I think I would give the hammock setup a better grade, but it’s so tight, and there’s so many trees that getting the rain fly up and, like, kind of tied out right, like, you had to find a root solution, which is.
[1:23:49 – 1:23:50] Adam: Oh, I did.
[1:23:50 – 1:24:11] Adam: double router yeah double router which is fine but it’s not great for like walking around you got to be like you got to have high vis poly cord for that if you’re going to be root solutioning it yeah but mine was pretty steep lines i didn’t i was kind of just in a very steep pitched uh roof in there yeah like i said i wasn’t very happy with my hammock set even though i’m doing at high grades
[1:24:12 – 1:24:16] Adam: Just didn’t have a lot of time to get it right, so I just got it good enough last night.
[1:24:16 – 1:24:17] Adam: I’m going to be honest.
[1:24:17 – 1:24:22] Adam: I’m going to give my hammock set grade a C- because it was just good enough.
[1:24:23 – 1:24:27] Erik: Yeah, somehow mine came together and I had one of the better night’s sleeps in a hammock.
[1:24:27 – 1:24:30] Erik: I didn’t even need like any kind of like cushioning on my head.
[1:24:30 – 1:24:39] Erik: I got in there, got all zipped up and I was like, I usually ball up like a down vest, Marty McFly back to the future vest as my pillow.
[1:24:39 – 1:24:42] Erik: And I got in there and I realized I had not grabbed it out of the bag yet.
[1:24:42 – 1:24:44] Erik: And I was just like, I can’t go back out there.
[1:24:44 – 1:24:45] Erik: It’s just maddening.
[1:24:45 – 1:24:47] Erik: I need to just forget about it.
[1:24:47 – 1:24:49] Adam: I did say I was like, I don’t care.
[1:24:49 – 1:24:53] Adam: I’ll pee my pants before I get out of there because the bugs are so bad.
[1:24:54 – 1:24:55] Adam: All lies.
[1:24:55 – 1:24:56] Adam: No, all lies.
[1:24:56 – 1:24:56] Adam: I actually did.
[1:24:57 – 1:24:59] Adam: Yeah, I did pee my pants, but I got it out of the net first.
[1:25:00 – 1:25:13] Erik: Yeah, I mean, I think good enough is probably how I would describe most things about this camp, except the one final thing we will grade, unless you’ve got anything else to say, is I feel like it is one of the nicer latrines I’ve been in in a while.
[1:25:13 – 1:25:15] Erik: I was going to say the latrine’s an A. Yeah.
[1:25:15 – 1:25:16] Erik: A solid A.
[1:25:16 – 1:25:18] Erik: It’s a nice little path up there for whatever reason.
[1:25:18 – 1:25:19] Erik: There are, like, no bugs.
[1:25:20 – 1:25:20] Adam: Yeah, no.
[1:25:20 – 1:25:22] Erik: I thought you were lying when you said there were no bugs.
[1:25:22 – 1:25:24] Adam: When I come back, he’s like, how are the bugs?
[1:25:24 – 1:25:26] Adam: I was like, there wasn’t any, kind of with a smile.
[1:25:27 – 1:25:28] Adam: And he’s just like, sure, sure.
[1:25:28 – 1:25:30] Adam: No, there really wasn’t any bugs at all.
[1:25:30 – 1:25:31] Adam: I could have sat up there all day.
[1:25:31 – 1:25:38] Erik: Well, this is another, we’ve probably discussed it considering we’ve had entire episodes devoted to latrines.
[1:25:39 – 1:25:43] Erik: But I think there’s a little bit more of a dynamic in terms of peaking.
[1:25:43 – 1:25:48] Erik: I did not because I definitely don’t want to peak after my paddling partner has been.
[1:25:48 – 1:25:51] Adam: Yeah, you don’t want to peak later.
[1:25:51 – 1:25:52] Erik: But you were up there.
[1:25:52 – 1:25:53] Erik: Did you look before you?
[1:25:53 – 1:25:55] Erik: So, like, what was the state of it?
[1:25:55 – 1:25:58] Erik: Could you tell if this site has been occupied very much?
[1:25:58 – 1:25:59] Adam: I don’t think so.
[1:25:59 – 1:26:04] Adam: You know, I’ve been reading Dersu, and it’s all about tracking and, like, noticing the small little things around you.
[1:26:04 – 1:26:07] Adam: And so I think, you know, peaking is part of that.
[1:26:08 – 1:26:10] Adam: It gives you a little bit of information about the site you’re in.
[1:26:11 – 1:26:12] Adam: Tells a story.
[1:26:12 – 1:26:12] SPEAKER_01: Yes.
[1:26:13 – 1:26:15] Adam: And the story here is I don’t think anybody’s been here in a while.
[1:26:16 – 1:26:18] Adam: Frankly, there was no wood gnoming to be had.
[1:26:18 – 1:26:22] Adam: It doesn’t look like there’s any obvious sign that I haven’t seen one bit of micro litter.
[1:26:24 – 1:26:29] Adam: I don’t think that this site gets stayed on very often because I peeked and it looked like it had been a while.
[1:26:30 – 1:26:30] Erik: Nice.
[1:26:31 – 1:26:32] Adam: Which is always nice.
[1:26:32 – 1:26:37] Adam: I kind of just, you look, you know, expecting the worst and sometimes you look and you’re like, that’s nice.
[1:26:37 – 1:26:38] Adam: That’s real nice.
[1:26:38 – 1:26:40] Erik: A nice flat bottom.
[1:26:40 – 1:26:41] Adam: It’s always nice to see.
[1:26:41 – 1:26:44] Adam: I mean, it probably did get rained in pretty hard because there’s, of course, no lid.
[1:26:45 – 1:26:47] Erik: It does have vent holes on the back.
[1:26:47 – 1:26:49] Erik: I love it when there’s vent holes but then also no lid.
[1:26:49 – 1:26:49] Adam: Yeah.
[1:26:50 – 1:26:50] Bob: Right.
[1:26:51 – 1:26:54] Adam: I mean, like I said, it’s in good shape and it’s in a really nice spot.
[1:26:54 – 1:26:59] Adam: From the volcano, you get a view of the lake out in front of you.
[1:27:00 – 1:27:04] Adam: And if you peek back over your right shoulder, you get the back view of the bay going to Jump Lake.
[1:27:05 – 1:27:10] Adam: So a double water view with some nice trees and there’s like some mossy rocks around.
[1:27:10 – 1:27:14] Adam: Like I said, it was a pretty nice environment and atmosphere up there, I thought.
[1:27:15 – 1:27:15] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[1:27:15 – 1:27:22] Adam: Yeah, I’d say of all, when I saw this site in 2013, I never thought I’d eventually stay here and then say this.
[1:27:22 – 1:27:24] Adam: The best part about this campsite was the latrine.
[1:27:25 – 1:27:25] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[1:27:26 – 1:27:29] Adam: Real nice box shitter there on Allen 1.
[1:27:29 – 1:27:32] Erik: It’s an A-plus box shitter.
[1:27:33 – 1:27:39] Erik: When you paddled by in 2013, you never realized that you would return almost 10 years later and blow…
[1:27:39 – 1:27:41] Adam: Doing a podcast where we view box shitters?
[1:27:41 – 1:27:43] Adam: No, I didn’t think that.
[1:27:43 – 1:27:45] Erik: Blowing a bunch of burger out your ass?
[1:27:49 – 1:27:50] Erik: There it is.
[1:27:50 – 1:27:51] Adam: And on that note.
[1:27:52 – 1:27:56] Adam: I’m going to give the site overall a good B. Yeah, I mean.
[1:27:56 – 1:27:57] Erik: A good B for burger.
[1:27:58 – 1:28:01] Erik: Yes, it has to get a B, of course, for burger.
[1:28:02 – 1:28:03] Erik: I would say it’s like a, I would say.
[1:28:03 – 1:28:05] Erik: How about a double B for burger butt?
[1:28:06 – 1:28:07] Adam: Yeah, burger butt.
[1:28:07 – 1:28:08] Adam: Yeah.
[1:28:08 – 1:28:09] Adam: Real mature here on Tumble Home.
[1:28:10 – 1:28:10] Erik: Yeah, we are.
[1:28:10 – 1:28:12] Erik: It’s, well, it’s, you know.
[1:28:12 – 1:28:12] Adam: I’m not lying for breakfast.
[1:28:12 – 1:28:13] Adam: I can say whatever I want.
[1:28:14 – 1:28:14] Erik: Yeah.
[1:28:14 – 1:28:17] Erik: I can say whatever I want right now.
[1:28:17 – 1:28:20] Erik: Yeah, I would say, it’d be tough.
[1:28:20 – 1:28:24] Erik: I would say I’d probably go solid B, even though in my heart of.
[1:28:24 – 1:28:25] Erik: Solid B.
[1:28:25 – 1:28:26] Erik: Solid burger.
[1:28:26 – 1:28:27] Erik: Solid burger.
[1:28:27 – 1:28:30] Erik: Heart of hearts, probably B minus, but it’s like, you know.
[1:28:31 – 1:28:34] Adam: Is that the B in like, you know, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot?
[1:28:34 – 1:28:37] Adam: The B in airport language is burger, I think.
[1:28:37 – 1:28:38] Erik: Is it?
[1:28:38 – 1:28:38] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:28:38 – 1:28:39] Adam: We’ve got to look that up.
[1:28:39 – 1:28:40] Adam: Anybody out there know?
[1:28:40 – 1:28:42] Adam: Tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[1:28:42 – 1:28:44] Adam: Yankee Hotel Burger?
[1:28:44 – 1:28:45] Adam: What is that?
[1:28:45 – 1:28:46] Adam: Is that Winnipeg?
[1:28:47 – 1:28:48] Adam: YHB?
[1:28:48 – 1:28:51] Erik: What’s… Alpha?
[1:28:51 – 1:28:54] Adam: Omega are in there too, so we’re going to hit at least Omega today.
[1:28:54 – 1:28:56] Erik: What’s airport language?
[1:28:57 – 1:28:59] Adam: Like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, whatever that is.
[1:29:00 – 1:29:01] Bob: Yeah, that’s just Army.
[1:29:01 – 1:29:02] Adam: Is that Army language?
[1:29:02 – 1:29:02] Adam: Yeah.
[1:29:02 – 1:29:04] Bob: Well, pilots use it too, I would say.
[1:29:04 – 1:29:06] Bob: But yeah, B is… And like all airports have a code.
[1:29:06 – 1:29:06] Adam: Yeah.
[1:29:07 – 1:29:08] Adam: So whatever, you know.
[1:29:08 – 1:29:09] Erik: But B is Bravo.
[1:29:09 – 1:29:10] Adam: Bravo.
[1:29:10 – 1:29:11] Adam: Not a burger.
[1:29:11 – 1:29:15] Adam: Well, we should maybe… Who do we call about getting that changed?
[1:29:15 – 1:29:17] Erik: I think we should probably write somebody and get it changed.
[1:29:17 – 1:29:23] Adam: We should write a letter, a strongly worded letter to the Airport Language Commission.
[1:29:24 – 1:29:25] Adam: We got to get this changed.
[1:29:25 – 1:29:25] Adam: Army.
[1:29:26 – 1:29:28] Adam: Anybody in the Army, tell your superiors.
[1:29:28 – 1:29:30] Adam: We got to change that from Bravo to Burger.
[1:29:31 – 1:29:32] Erik: Yeah, we should try.
[1:29:32 – 1:29:34] Erik: We should enlist.
[1:29:34 – 1:29:36] Erik: Yeah, maybe we should.
[1:29:36 – 1:29:40] Erik: That might be the craziest thing you’ve ever said on this podcast.
[1:29:40 – 1:29:41] Erik: 202 episodes.
[1:29:42 – 1:29:44] Erik: You’ve just said the worst thing ever.
[1:29:44 – 1:29:47] Adam: We’re going to enlist in the Army just so we can get Bravo changed to Burger.
[1:29:47 – 1:29:49] Adam: That seems like a solid plan.
[1:29:49 – 1:29:52] Adam: I mean, you know, 20 years, we’ll both be generals probably.
[1:29:52 – 1:29:53] Adam: Yeah, we could probably.
[1:29:53 – 1:29:55] Erik: Then we can really affect some real change.
[1:29:55 – 1:29:56] Erik: Yeah, we could call the shots.
[1:29:56 – 1:29:59] Erik: What do you guys want for letters of the Army alphabet?
[1:29:59 – 1:30:00] Erik: What would you like to see changed?
[1:30:01 – 1:30:03] Erik: I’m sure there’s other things we could change about the Army.
[1:30:03 – 1:30:05] Adam: No disrespect or nothing.
[1:30:05 – 1:30:06] Adam: Just the alphabet.
[1:30:06 – 1:30:09] Adam: Just the alphabet is number one for me personally.
[1:30:09 – 1:30:12] Adam: But once we get to be generals, we could probably look at changing some other stuff too.
[1:30:13 – 1:30:14] Adam: Tumble Homecast on Instagram.
[1:30:15 – 1:30:16] Adam: What should we change?
[1:30:16 – 1:30:18] Adam: When do we become generals 20 years from now?
[1:30:19 – 1:30:23] Adam: Trent Reznor, you’re welcome to send us money or suggestions in this one.
[1:30:24 – 1:30:26] Adam: Hit us up on the DMs.
[1:30:26 – 1:30:27] Erik: I’m going to go as far as I can.
[1:30:27 – 1:30:29] Erik: I think it’s Alpha Bravo.
[1:30:30 – 1:30:30] Erik: Charlie.
[1:30:30 – 1:30:31] Erik: Charlie.
[1:30:31 – 1:30:32] Erik: Delta.
[1:30:33 – 1:30:33] Adam: Echo.
[1:30:33 – 1:30:34] Adam: Echo.
[1:30:36 – 1:30:36] Erik: What’s F?
[1:30:37 – 1:30:37] Erik: Frank?
[1:30:38 – 1:30:38] Erik: No.
[1:30:39 – 1:30:40] Erik: Foxtrot.
[1:30:40 – 1:30:41] Erik: Foxtrot, of course.
[1:30:42 – 1:30:43] Erik: We just said it two minutes ago.
[1:30:43 – 1:30:44] Erik: That’s how my brain works.
[1:30:44 – 1:30:45] Adam: Geronimo?
[1:30:46 – 1:30:46] Erik: No.
[1:30:48 – 1:30:48] Erik: Gizmo.
[1:30:48 – 1:30:50] Erik: It’s not Gamma, is it?
[1:30:50 – 1:30:50] Erik: No.
[1:30:50 – 1:30:51] Erik: No, I doubt it.
[1:30:51 – 1:30:51] Erik: Gamma.
[1:30:51 – 1:30:52] Erik: All right.
[1:30:52 – 1:30:53] Erik: Well, we’re stuck on G. All right.
[1:30:53 – 1:30:54] Erik: We’re going to end it there.
[1:30:54 – 1:30:56] Adam: All right.
[1:30:56 – 1:31:02] Adam: For Tumble Home Boundary Waters Podcast, I think this will probably put a cap on episode 202, live in the field.
[1:31:02 – 1:31:04] Adam: Thanks for being here with us.
[1:31:05 – 1:31:09] Adam: Patreons, we love you, and thank you for your support of the show.
[1:31:10 – 1:31:12] Erik: Also, general listeners are fine, too.
[1:31:12 – 1:31:13] Erik: We also appreciate you.
[1:31:13 – 1:31:18] Adam: Anybody listening, you know, I run into somebody in the grocery store, and they’re like, hey, I listened to your show.
[1:31:18 – 1:31:20] Adam: I’m always like, well, thank you for listening.
[1:31:20 – 1:31:24] Adam: I don’t know why anybody listens to this, but I do appreciate it because I like doing it.
[1:31:24 – 1:31:24] Adam: It’s a lot of fun.
[1:31:25 – 1:31:26] Erik: It is, especially out here.
[1:31:26 – 1:31:30] Erik: It’s incredible that we’ve gone as long as we have without the field mic.
[1:31:30 – 1:31:34] Erik: Under the sun, probably need to put on that light as air.
[1:31:35 – 1:31:35] Erik: SPF spray.
[1:31:35 – 1:31:37] Erik: Sitting right there.
[1:31:37 – 1:31:37] Erik: 50.
[1:31:37 – 1:31:38] Erik: Put that 50 on.
[1:31:39 – 1:31:39] Erik: Yes.
[1:31:39 – 1:31:40] Erik: Thanks for being here.
[1:31:40 – 1:31:49] Erik: I’m sure we will only continue to get more coherent, but just so you know, your favorite podcast can only count to F in army language.
[1:31:49 – 1:31:49] Erik: Yeah.
[1:31:50 – 1:31:51] Adam: It’s not good.
[1:31:51 – 1:31:52] Adam: We’re going to work on that.
[1:31:52 – 1:31:53] Adam: All right.
[1:31:53 – 1:31:58] Adam: Again, thank you to Andrew for the beer sponsor and the oatmeal sponsor for breakfast.
[1:31:59 – 1:32:03] Adam: And with that, we’ll leave you here on Allen 1.
[1:32:03 – 1:32:06] Adam: And who knows where we’ll be next time.
[1:32:07 – 1:32:08] Adam: Good morning.
[1:32:09 – 1:32:11] Adam: And as always, enjoy paddling.
[1:32:17 – 1:32:24] Bob: The horses had to be fed, and while the men took care of them, I reclined in the shade of a huge Siberian cedar and promptly fell asleep.
[1:32:25 – 1:32:27] Bob: Olentyev roused me some two hours later.
[1:32:27 – 1:32:32] Bob: I noticed that Dersu had chopped wood and stacked it in the shed, and had gathered birch bark.
[1:32:33 – 1:32:37] Bob: I had the notion that he wanted to burn down the lodge, and started talking him out of the idea.
[1:32:38 – 1:32:42] Bob: But instead of replying, he asked me for a pinch of salt and a handful of rice.
[1:32:43 – 1:32:46] Bob: I was curious to know why he wanted them, and I told my men to give him what he asked.
[1:32:47 – 1:32:53] Bob: The gold carefully wrapped some matches in birch bark, and then made separate birch bark parcels of the salt and rice.
[1:32:53 – 1:32:59] Bob: Then he hung them all in the shed, adjusted the bark of the shed’s roof, and made ready to depart.
[1:33:00 – 1:33:02] Bob: You probably expect to return, I asked him.
[1:33:03 – 1:33:04] Bob: He shook his head negatively.
[1:33:05 – 1:33:06] Bob: I asked him why, then.
[1:33:06 – 1:33:08] Bob: He was leaving the rice, salt, and matches.
[1:33:08 – 1:33:10] Bob: Other man, come, Dersu replied.
[1:33:11 – 1:33:14] Bob: Find shed, find wood, find matches, find food.
[1:33:15 – 1:33:16] Bob: No die.
[1:33:16 – 1:33:17] Bob: I was astounded.
[1:33:18 – 1:33:24] Bob: The gold worried about some stranger whom he had never seen and who would never know who had chopped the wood and provided the food for him.
[1:33:26 – 1:33:34] Bob: I recall that my men always burned all the discarded bark when leaving a campfire, not out of ill will, of course, simply for the fun of seeing it burn, and I had never stopped them.
[1:33:35 – 1:33:38] Bob: This savage, indeed, was more a humanitarian than we.
