Episode Transcript

[0:00:33 – 0:00:41] Adam: Welcome to Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast.
[0:00:41 – 0:00:43] Erik: I am Andrew Byrd.
[0:00:56 – 0:01:04] Adam: And I am Francois Le Castor, coming to you live from Studio K. Welcome, welcome, friends.
[0:01:06 – 0:01:06] Adam: Welly, welly.
[0:01:08 – 0:01:15] Adam: Tomahome is, as always, sponsored by our truest friends on Patreon.
[0:01:16 – 0:01:18] Adam: Together, we are all experts on the Boundary Waters.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:20] Adam: Thank you for joining us, friends.
[0:01:20 – 0:01:21] Erik: Enthusiasts.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:25] Adam: Well, we are enthusiasts as discussed on maps too.
[0:01:25 – 0:01:27] Adam: All of us together, we are experts.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:31] Adam: That’s how you truly achieve expertise.
[0:01:32 – 0:01:34] Erik: Not on your own, as a group.
[0:01:36 – 0:01:37] Adam: Merci.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:37] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:38] Erik: Thank you, patrons.
[0:01:38 – 0:01:40] Erik: But also, thank you if you’re just listening.
[0:01:41 – 0:01:41] Erik: That’s cool, too.
[0:01:41 – 0:01:42] Erik: Nothing wrong with that.
[0:01:43 – 0:01:47] Adam: There’s plenty of podcasts I listen to that I am not a patron of theirs.
[0:01:48 – 0:01:49] Adam: We can be friends, too.
[0:01:49 – 0:01:51] Adam: We can always… We’re very friendly.
[0:01:51 – 0:01:51] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:52 – 0:01:58] Erik: So, I can already tell we’ve got a little bit more pep in our step this week.
[0:01:58 – 0:01:59] Adam: I feel a lot better.
[0:02:00 – 0:02:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:00 – 0:02:04] Adam: I have not actually listened to episode 70 yet.
[0:02:05 – 0:02:28] Erik: literally just posted it in studio here which is a really weird i’ve never actually done that in here and i it took twice as long as it should have because the work space was not typically where i do cross the streams yeah if there’s spelling errors or yeah duncan lake will go down as uh it’s a real it’s just really funked up we were in a funk
[0:02:29 – 0:02:34] Adam: I’m not going to say it was low effort, but it was definitely chill.
[0:02:34 – 0:02:36] Erik: It was low energy, that’s for sure.
[0:02:36 – 0:02:41] Adam: Well, we didn’t have any energy, but we reported and we did our best.
[0:02:41 – 0:02:44] Adam: We showed up, and that’s sometimes what it’s all about.
[0:02:44 – 0:02:49] Adam: Maybe there’s been days in the Boundary Waters where I’ve definitely not felt my best.
[0:02:49 – 0:02:52] Adam: You can’t just sit and camp.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:57] Adam: You just got to move forward one foot in front of the other and keep the paddle wet.
[0:02:58 – 0:02:58] Adam: Oh, yes.
[0:02:59 – 0:03:00] Adam: Keep that paddle wet.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:02] Erik: The paddles are going to get real wet today.
[0:03:02 – 0:03:03] Adam: That’s right.
[0:03:04 – 0:03:08] Erik: Who knows how long the rest of our day is going to be here.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:14] Erik: Another marathon recording day ahead of us here.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:16] Erik: This is episode 071.
[0:03:20 – 0:03:31] Erik: And it is focused on a question that I brought up to you on a recent WTIP local community radio.
[0:03:32 – 0:03:32] Erik: That’s right.
[0:03:32 – 0:03:34] Erik: Broadcasting at 90.9, sorry.
[0:03:34 – 0:03:36] Erik: Yeah, we were on the radio.
[0:03:36 – 0:03:37] Adam: We were on the radio.
[0:03:37 – 0:03:38] Adam: We do have a show.
[0:03:39 – 0:03:41] Adam: We volunteer at the local station from time to time.
[0:03:42 – 0:03:44] Erik: And it came to my attention recently.
[0:03:45 – 0:03:48] Erik: Something that was a game changer for me.
[0:03:49 – 0:04:12] Erik: And I think that the question I posed to the fine folks on our BWCA was pretty open-ended, but obviously revolving around the boundary waters and something, whether it be gear and experience, a strategy that you bring to the table that changes the way you experience life.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:42] Erik: camping in the botched waters essentially it could be a mentality yeah it could be I said in the question like this is very open ended because that was what when I brought that question to the table to you guys on the radio my big game changer was noise cancelling headphones yes and yours was like camping on lakes or having a dinner on Lake Superior and then Quaz the other host on the show was like in a relationship
[0:04:42 – 0:05:04] Adam: yeah you guys both blew my game changers out of the water mine was just a dumb product and yours was like mine was yeah i had a few experiences mine was yeah like watching the milky way from on the big lake at night yeah having a bonfire on the beach and then also i wanted to give a shout out to strawbell gardening oh that was my other big one that was martin natalie’s uh you had a bunch i
[0:05:05 – 0:05:07] Adam: Because you posed the question and then you played a set.
[0:05:08 – 0:05:10] Adam: And so we had a good 10 minutes, 12 minutes to think about it.
[0:05:10 – 0:05:12] Adam: So I ended up making a pretty decent list.
[0:05:12 – 0:05:15] Adam: But those are my top two, I think.
[0:05:15 – 0:05:19] Adam: Straw bale gardening is really great for us living up here in zone zero.
[0:05:20 – 0:05:21] Erik: I think it’s one or two.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:23] Adam: Zero is like none of it.
[0:05:25 – 0:05:47] Erik: maybe yeah that’s the expert uh gardening uh advice you’re gonna get on tumble home here we don’t even know what zone we’re in i just know that the bean crop is looking amazing good bean crop all right cool well we so yeah it’s most likely gonna be two parts on game changers
[0:05:47 – 0:05:48] Erik: Game changers.
[0:05:48 – 0:05:50] Erik: I’m thinking most people are going with gear.
[0:05:50 – 0:06:04] Erik: Your game changers and then our game changers because based on the number of responses, I think it’s going to take us close to an hour if not more because we still have, if you can believe it, two more things to wrap up in terms of maps.
[0:06:05 – 0:06:06] Adam: We’re never truly done with maps.
[0:06:06 – 0:06:07] Erik: No, that’s true.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:12] Erik: We could start the show every week with like one more thing on maps.
[0:06:12 – 0:06:17] Erik: But we do have another sponsor besides our fine folks on Patreon.
[0:06:18 – 0:06:20] Erik: And that is some beers as usual.
[0:06:23 – 0:06:31] Erik: I will crack these beers and then I will tell a quick anecdote that happened to me just this morning on another beer sponsorship.
[0:06:32 – 0:06:36] Adam: Beer, beer, beer, beer, beer of the week.
[0:06:37 – 0:06:42] Erik: So, this is another Ballast Point Brewing Company.
[0:06:43 – 0:06:45] Adam: For a while, I was kind of worried because we’ve gotten a bunch of these.
[0:06:46 – 0:06:48] Erik: How many different ones are there?
[0:06:48 – 0:06:49] Erik: There’s quite a few, I think.
[0:06:49 – 0:06:50] Erik: I love it.
[0:06:51 – 0:06:56] Erik: So, yeah, these were just literally two bottles of Ballast Point Brewing Company.
[0:06:56 – 0:07:00] Erik: Spruce Tip Sculpin IPA.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:28] Erik: that were left love it on the table and outfitting yes this note just taped to it yeah the note just mysteriously when did this appear i don’t know like early july oh okay it’s like four podcast guys todd black river falls wisconsin thank you tom tom nice so oh man black river falls is a very pretty area of wisconsin
[0:07:28 – 0:07:30] Adam: Yeah, so another ballast point.
[0:07:30 – 0:07:36] Erik: I think there’s even a third kind in the fridge still that needs to be sponsored.
[0:07:36 – 0:07:38] Adam: Another ballast point.
[0:07:38 – 0:07:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:39 – 0:07:39] Erik: Oof.
[0:07:39 – 0:07:41] Erik: Yeah, so I don’t know when we’ll get to those.
[0:07:41 – 0:07:43] Adam: I used to do a bit of camping around Black River Falls.
[0:07:43 – 0:07:45] Adam: You’re hung up on Black River Falls, I can tell.
[0:07:45 – 0:07:47] Adam: I’m going to crack these beers.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:51] Adam: There’s still some good remote camping opportunities.
[0:07:51 – 0:07:52] Adam: I’ll leave it at that.
[0:07:54 – 0:08:02] Erik: See, so we’ve got the wine bottle opener here, which is nice, but it does not provide the satisfactory popping.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:03] Adam: It’ll make a noise.
[0:08:03 – 0:08:05] Erik: Maybe I can use the end here for a… No.
[0:08:05 – 0:08:06] Adam: Just pop it regular.
[0:08:09 – 0:08:09] Adam: There’s one.
[0:08:09 – 0:08:10] Adam: Beer.
[0:08:12 – 0:08:14] Adam: Beer of the week.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:14] Adam: Two.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:17] Adam: I’m going to go back to the first drop.
[0:08:18 – 0:08:19] Adam: All right.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:19] Adam: Cheers, friend.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:29] Adam: Can we hang that note up here in the studio for the show?
[0:08:29 – 0:08:30] Adam: Just for this episode.
[0:08:30 – 0:08:31] Adam: We’ll hang it up.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:33] Erik: Oh, that’s smooth.
[0:08:34 – 0:08:38] Adam: Yeah, it’s sprucey.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:41] Adam: I like that.
[0:08:41 – 0:08:41] Adam: Creamy?
[0:08:42 – 0:08:43] Adam: Yeah, that’s crazy.
[0:08:43 – 0:08:44] Adam: It’s very creamy.
[0:08:45 – 0:08:46] Erik: It’s super smooth.
[0:08:46 – 0:08:48] Erik: Creamy is the right word.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:49] Erik: But it’s smooth.
[0:08:49 – 0:08:50] Erik: Thank you, Todd.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:51] Erik: Jeez, that’s good.
[0:08:51 – 0:08:55] Erik: Because we’ve had that, what was it, Standard out of Duluth?
[0:08:56 – 0:08:58] Erik: Does a spruce tip IPA.
[0:08:58 – 0:09:01] Erik: That’s very good, but it’s also very hoppy.
[0:09:01 – 0:09:04] Erik: And maybe a little bit too perfumey for me.
[0:09:04 – 0:09:05] Erik: This is like super smooth.
[0:09:05 – 0:09:09] Erik: The only spruce tip one I think I can remember having is from Blacklist.
[0:09:09 – 0:09:09] Erik: Blacklist.
[0:09:10 – 0:09:15] Erik: But they have that one beer that they call is the Blacklist Standard IPA.
[0:09:15 – 0:09:16] Erik: Oh, I see.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:18] Erik: I was confusing the name of the beer with the brewery.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:19] Erik: Indeed.
[0:09:20 – 0:09:21] Erik: We should cheers to these a second time.
[0:09:21 – 0:09:22] Erik: Dang.
[0:09:22 – 0:09:22] Erik: Cheers.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:26] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:09:27 – 0:09:27] Adam: Solid.
[0:09:27 – 0:09:31] Adam: Well, this day is taking a turn in the right direction.
[0:09:31 – 0:09:32] Erik: Scalping.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:33] Adam: And it’s been a pretty good day already.
[0:09:34 – 0:09:35] Erik: Yes, it has.
[0:09:35 – 0:09:37] Adam: We got the dog out dog-joring, Eric.
[0:09:37 – 0:09:38] Erik: Dog-joring.
[0:09:38 – 0:09:39] Adam: Bike-joring.
[0:09:39 – 0:09:40] Adam: Yeah, bike-joring.
[0:09:40 – 0:09:40] Adam: Dog-joring?
[0:09:40 – 0:09:43] Erik: I think dog-joring would be a dog pulling a dog.
[0:09:43 – 0:09:43] UNKNOWN: Ha ha ha.
[0:09:44 – 0:09:48] Adam: They got this young fast dog pulling this old slow dog.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:49 – 0:09:54] Adam: I think any form of dog-joring can be called dog-joring, but then you have ski-jor or bike-jor.
[0:09:54 – 0:10:03] Adam: And then I was informed earlier this month that there is, out west, they have people get pulled on skis by horses and go off jumps.
[0:10:03 – 0:10:04] Erik: Horse-joring?
[0:10:04 – 0:10:07] Adam: Yeah, I thought ski-joring with a husky was dangerous.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:09] Adam: These people are wearing full-on helmets.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:10] Adam: I would imagine.
[0:10:11 – 0:10:12] Adam: You could blow a leg out doing that.
[0:10:12 – 0:10:14] Erik: Yeah, they should be in hockey gear.
[0:10:14 – 0:10:39] Adam: yeah pads it was pretty intimidating so anyways in the interest of just trying it’s cooling off around here fall is in the air and uh yeah we got out and did some dog enjoying today so my day has already been off to a great start yeah and then todd donated these wonderful ballast points excellent excellent beers yeah i’m feeling pretty good too now that i am off the work farm uh that is clear water um for uh
[0:10:40 – 0:10:55] Erik: half of a day and then also tomorrow uh full day off the first full day off i have had in a month taking it off boss yeah taking it off congratulations that’s a good feeling
[0:10:56 – 0:10:56] Adam: It is good.
[0:10:56 – 0:10:58] Adam: I was on like a 10…
[0:10:58 – 0:11:04] Adam: I had like a pretty long run here around Labor Day where I was, but it was not nearly a month.
[0:11:04 – 0:11:05] Adam: I can’t imagine that.
[0:11:05 – 0:11:08] Erik: Well, and my day off still includes…
[0:11:08 – 0:11:10] Erik: I have the Clearwater truck filled with recycling.
[0:11:10 – 0:11:16] Erik: It does still include going to the recycling center tomorrow and then going back to Clearwater to drop off the truck.
[0:11:16 – 0:11:17] Erik: Yeah, so…
[0:11:19 – 0:11:30] Adam: Yesterday was my first day off in a long time, and I just chopped down a bunch of trees willy-nilly, just taking out random balsams around the yard and exercising the dog and myself.
[0:11:30 – 0:11:31] Erik: Fresh air is important.
[0:11:32 – 0:11:32] Erik: It is.
[0:11:32 – 0:11:35] Erik: So we have to finish a few things on maps.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:36] Erik: What do we got to wrap up?
[0:11:36 – 0:11:38] Erik: We have an email that I couldn’t let go.
[0:11:38 – 0:11:39] Erik: It’s just too good.
[0:11:40 – 0:11:45] Erik: And then also one more map to introduce into the conversation.
[0:11:46 – 0:11:46] Adam: Okay.
[0:11:46 – 0:11:47] Adam: If you can believe that.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:51] Adam: I got a couple of communications on the Instagram, too.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:53] Adam: Maybe we can bring those up while we’re getting back.
[0:11:53 – 0:11:54] Adam: Why don’t you start with this email?
[0:11:54 – 0:11:57] Erik: I’ll start the email, and then I’ll go over and open up this map.
[0:11:57 – 0:12:01] Erik: And when I’m doing that, you can give your little tip that you’ve got.
[0:12:01 – 0:12:02] Erik: So this is from Evan.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:04] Erik: You remember Evan.
[0:12:04 – 0:12:04] Erik: Or maybe you don’t.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:08] Erik: He’s the fine friend who donated the dragon’s milk.
[0:12:09 – 0:12:10] Adam: Oh, thank you, Evan.
[0:12:11 – 0:12:12] Erik: So much for that.
[0:12:13 – 0:12:16] Erik: He has this to say, maps, one final thought.
[0:12:17 – 0:12:30] Erik: Every evening as we wrap up dinner and gather around the campfire in the BWCA, each camper slash paddler gets a chance to write their thoughts slash observations slash memories from the day on the group map.
[0:12:31 – 0:12:32] Erik: Usually a Fisher.
[0:12:32 – 0:12:33] Erik: Nice.
[0:12:34 – 0:12:42] Erik: The map becomes a record of the trip, route, timings, memories that gets pulled out whenever friends and family can get together.
[0:12:43 – 0:12:49] Erik: No experience is too embarrassing to leave off the map, and different opinions of what happened are allowed on the map.
[0:12:50 – 0:12:53] Erik: Lots of laughter when we look at the map in the following years.
[0:12:53 – 0:12:54] Erik: Absolutely.
[0:12:54 – 0:13:02] Erik: This map is always carried in the yellow backpack in a zipper lock bag, so it’s easy to unfold and ready to receive new memories.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:07] Adam: I like this is my favorite part.
[0:13:07 – 0:13:08] Erik: P.S.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:10] Erik: You are what you remember.
[0:13:11 – 0:13:14] Erik: Let’s remember more by writing it down.
[0:13:16 – 0:13:16] Adam: Evan, absolutely.
[0:13:17 – 0:13:19] Adam: And that’s not just a map or a memory.
[0:13:19 – 0:13:21] Adam: That’s also an art project, it sounds like.
[0:13:21 – 0:13:22] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:22 – 0:13:23] Adam: I like that a lot.
[0:13:24 – 0:13:25] Adam: Very nice.
[0:13:25 – 0:13:30] Adam: We had a couple communications on the Instagram from TumblehomeCast.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:48] Adam: For one, we were talking about the Tumblehome the board game, and then Aldi1, who has chimed in before, sent me a map, and it’s a Ticket to Ride board game prototype that was made by this.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:54] Adam: It looked like on some sort of computer program, but anyways, I was like, that’s incredible.
[0:13:54 – 0:14:05] Adam: i’m glad we went the carcass on route because i don’t know if i could compete with that it really it was like over my basswood anyway so shout out to that thanks for saying it over and uh
[0:14:08 – 0:14:20] Adam: Yeah, we had Cravelets11 came in with a couple comments chiming in saying the Gaia and trying to tell me how to pronounce Gaia because we couldn’t get that right.
[0:14:20 – 0:14:21] Erik: What were you saying?
[0:14:21 – 0:14:21] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:14:21 – 0:14:23] Adam: I was like Gaia.
[0:14:24 – 0:14:26] Adam: We both messed it up on the maps episode.
[0:14:27 – 0:14:29] Adam: It’s an app they recommend and then…
[0:14:31 – 0:14:37] Adam: This is Corey who has dropped off a beer I don’t think we’ve used, so I’ll leave that alone.
[0:14:39 – 0:14:46] Erik: The problem with that one is it’s been transported and it is at a different place.
[0:14:47 – 0:14:50] Erik: It’s down in my fridge at the house.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:51] Erik: We’ll get to it.
[0:14:51 – 0:14:54] Erik: I was going to grab it today and I didn’t have time to get down to the house.
[0:14:55 – 0:15:06] Adam: But anyways, they also had found a great stock of Voyager’s maps at Stone Harbor, which we had mentioned, but we didn’t think they’re still making them.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:08] Adam: Are they maybe a collector’s item?
[0:15:08 – 0:15:08] Adam: Maybe.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:11] Adam: They might have a gem there.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:12] Erik: They might.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:22] Erik: Every time I’ve talked to people at Clearwater about how the Voyager maps don’t exist anymore, every few conversations I have, somebody’s like, no, you just go to…
[0:15:23 – 0:15:24] Erik: call the guy or write him a direct email.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:26] Erik: It’s like, well, then they’re kind of still…
[0:15:26 – 0:15:28] Adam: They found some at Stone Harbor, apparently.
[0:15:28 – 0:15:28] Adam: Yeah.
[0:15:29 – 0:15:31] Erik: So you got to know who to know to get those.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:33] Erik: And then…
[0:15:33 – 0:15:36] Erik: So the final thing on maps is like, a few days ago…
[0:15:38 – 0:15:39] Erik: This guy came in.
[0:15:39 – 0:15:46] Erik: I was in the kitchen at Clearwater, and my dad came back, and he’s like, yeah, some guy is here trying to hawk some maps.
[0:15:48 – 0:15:49] Erik: I’m like, all right.
[0:15:49 – 0:15:50] Erik: Craig, come on.
[0:15:51 – 0:15:54] Erik: Because we get people coming around trying to do that, and most of the time it’s like, nah, not interested.
[0:15:54 – 0:15:55] Erik: Apply my wares?
[0:15:55 – 0:15:56] Erik: Whatever.
[0:15:56 – 0:16:10] Erik: But I went up there and he’s just like, yeah, so I got these maps of like specifically like hiking trails in the area, Superior Hiking Trail, Border Rock Trail, Keck, and then all the other little miscellaneous ones.
[0:16:11 – 0:16:15] Erik: And he’s like a kind of like a design architect.
[0:16:15 – 0:16:22] Erik: So he kind of took his knowledge of the area, his knowledge of being an architect and sort of a little bit of his artistic flair and
[0:16:23 – 0:16:42] Erik: and produce these maps which are pretty cool i think they’re more like a is this the hand-drawn like really tall map it’s not sure no uh i have one of those this is the move those beers quick so you can see these this is uh what
[0:16:43 – 0:16:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:16:44 – 0:16:47] Adam: Oh, we were just talking about how much we like hand-drawn maps.
[0:16:47 – 0:16:48] Erik: Yeah, this is definitely…
[0:16:48 – 0:16:53] Erik: I think it’s hand-drawn and accompanied with some GIS stuff.
[0:16:53 – 0:16:54] Erik: Yeah.
[0:16:54 – 0:16:58] Erik: So it’s got basically the major hiking trails.
[0:16:59 – 0:17:00] Erik: In pink here.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:04] Erik: Along with lighter pink, like some of the other smaller ones.
[0:17:04 – 0:17:04] Erik: Sure.
[0:17:05 – 0:17:06] Adam: The Eagle Mountain Trail here.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:07] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:17:08 – 0:17:14] Erik: It’s got, like, the closer you look, the more detail you’ll find.
[0:17:14 – 0:17:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:22] Erik: It’s got cell phone towers and their ranges, which is, like, kind of weird and interesting.
[0:17:24 – 0:17:24] Erik: Oh, dear.
[0:17:24 – 0:17:26] Erik: It does have campsites.
[0:17:26 – 0:17:33] Erik: It’s got vistas listed, like the little Xs on the trail, especially for the border route trail.
[0:17:33 – 0:17:34] Adam: Yes.
[0:17:34 – 0:17:34] Adam: Yes.
[0:17:36 – 0:17:42] Erik: And the name of this map is Mermal Maps.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:46] Erik: I’m assuming it’s his last name.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:49] Adam: There’s a trampled by turtles like lyrics down here.
[0:17:49 – 0:17:51] Erik: So yeah, around the edge of the map as well.
[0:17:52 – 0:17:52] Erik: Next to Shakespeare.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:59] Erik: Yeah, there’s a bunch of quotes like kind of wildernessy leave no trace kind of quotes.
[0:18:00 – 0:18:08] Erik: It’s got the like mileage for the border route trail and everything from like different points.
[0:18:08 – 0:18:12] Erik: M-Y-R-M-E-L. Mermel maps.
[0:18:12 – 0:18:14] Erik: Do you want to each pick a quote?
[0:18:15 – 0:18:23] Erik: And then it also continues on the backside to include everything over on Ely as well.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:26] Erik: So, double-sided map.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:27] Erik: Printed on like…
[0:18:27 – 0:18:27] Erik: It’s pretty thin.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:28] Adam: Pretty thin.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:29] Adam: It is thin, but it is definitely…
[0:18:29 – 0:18:31] Adam: I wouldn’t want to take that in the field.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:32] Adam: That’s a collector’s item.
[0:18:32 – 0:18:36] Erik: It’s definitely more of a display map, I would say, for sure.
[0:18:36 – 0:18:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:38 – 0:18:39] Erik: This is a real piece of art.
[0:18:39 – 0:18:40] Erik: They’re cool, yeah.
[0:18:40 – 0:18:42] Erik: Got a good chunk of Quedi in there, too.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:43] Erik: I…
[0:18:43 – 0:19:04] Erik: purchased a few from him to sell in the store they have a really good look to them and i like i like how it looks hand-drawn yeah i mean it is obviously yeah and it is one of those things where it’s like yeah the closer you look it’s like the more detail you can find and he also does have a strictly like
[0:19:06 – 0:19:29] Adam: superior hiking trail map which just kind of goes up the whole shore and it is like a super long like wall i’ve seen that one too um and that’s really cool yeah it’s obviously the same maker yes mer what is it myrmal it’s obviously myrmal myrmal all right here’s the one i’ve picked it’s john muir the sun shines not on us but in us
[0:19:31 – 0:19:36] Erik: Well, you were looking at it from the right side, so I’ll have to flip it over.
[0:19:36 – 0:19:37] Adam: You can’t read upside down?
[0:19:37 – 0:19:38] Adam: Hand font?
[0:19:39 – 0:19:40] Adam: It’s a nice font.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:41 – 0:19:44] Erik: Yeah, a lot of it is just really well done.
[0:19:44 – 0:19:46] Erik: I like the fonts, the colors.
[0:19:46 – 0:19:47] Erik: It’s very unique.
[0:19:49 – 0:19:50] Erik: It’s a piece of art.
[0:19:53 – 0:19:56] Erik: Walking is man’s best medicine.
[0:19:58 – 0:19:59] Erik: That’s Hippocrates.
[0:20:01 – 0:20:11] Erik: So yeah, I figured it was like crazy that you just walked in here with these new maps like two days after we just got done recording like three hours ago.
[0:20:11 – 0:20:13] Erik: You’re a week late, Mermel.
[0:20:13 – 0:20:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:20:16 – 0:20:17] Adam: So, yeah, I don’t know.
[0:20:17 – 0:20:18] Erik: Right on time.
[0:20:18 – 0:20:20] Erik: You got room for another map on the wall somewhere?
[0:20:20 – 0:20:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:20:21 – 0:20:22] Adam: You can have that if you want.
[0:20:22 – 0:20:23] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:20:23 – 0:20:23] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:23 – 0:20:25] Adam: We got room for a myrtle.
[0:20:25 – 0:20:25] Adam: We got room.
[0:20:26 – 0:20:27] Adam: Always room for a myrtle.
[0:20:27 – 0:20:28] Adam: We got to shift a few things around in here.
[0:20:29 – 0:20:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:30 – 0:20:30] Adam: No doubt.
[0:20:30 – 0:20:31] Adam: All right.
[0:20:31 – 0:20:32] Adam: Well, that’s nice.
[0:20:32 – 0:20:33] Adam: Yeah, very nice.
[0:20:35 – 0:20:44] Erik: So, I think that’s all we have to pre-address before we get to the 23 responses.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:50] Erik: What is your biggest game changer?
[0:20:51 – 0:20:52] Adam: All right.
[0:20:52 – 0:20:53] Adam: Time for the… Is it time?
[0:20:53 – 0:20:54] Erik: Are you ready?
[0:20:58 – 0:21:02] Adam: Game changers.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:04] Erik: All right.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:05] Erik: Sweet.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:10] Adam: I think they look like they’re mostly… Can we just get the question reread as it was posted?
[0:21:10 – 0:21:11] Adam: Yeah.
[0:21:11 – 0:21:12] Erik: To start.
[0:21:12 – 0:21:14] Erik: Let’s get Reddit into a more reasonable…
[0:21:16 – 0:21:18] Erik: Visit old Reddit because new Reddit.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:21] Erik: Digital Reddit is no good.
[0:21:21 – 0:21:24] Erik: I’m going to go right to the question.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:30] Erik: Last week or whatever, we were just reading right from my… Oh, there’s a total.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:33] Erik: So 23 responses with a total of 50 comments.
[0:21:34 – 0:21:36] Adam: So this sounds like there were some spinoffs here.
[0:21:36 – 0:21:37] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:39] Adam: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[0:21:39 – 0:21:39] Erik: All right.
[0:21:42 – 0:21:45] Erik: We’re talking biggest BWCA slash Q…
[0:21:47 – 0:21:48] Erik: Game changers next week.
[0:21:48 – 0:21:55] Erik: What piece of equipment, strategy, or revelation has been the biggest game changer in the way you experience the wilderness?
[0:21:56 – 0:21:59] Erik: This one is definitely open to interpretation.
[0:22:01 – 0:22:03] Adam: Happy paddling.
[0:22:04 – 0:22:04] Erik: Nice.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:07] Adam: Okay.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:13] Erik: So I don’t know how much we want to really delve into the responses.
[0:22:14 – 0:22:15] Adam: Depends on how many points they have.
[0:22:16 – 0:22:16] Erik: That’s true.
[0:22:17 – 0:22:18] Adam: That’s how Reddit works.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:22] Adam: It won’t even show us the responses unless they’re worth our time, right?
[0:22:24 – 0:22:24] Erik: Wait, no.
[0:22:24 – 0:22:25] Adam: That’s not how it works at all.
[0:22:26 – 0:22:27] Erik: We’ll be the judge of that.
[0:22:27 – 0:22:28] Adam: We’ll be the judge.
[0:22:29 – 0:22:29] Erik: Well…
[0:22:30 – 0:22:36] Erik: Yeah, so if it’s not already clear, we’re going to just do our own, probably in the… Not probably, in part two.
[0:22:38 – 0:22:48] Erik: We’re definitely going to have our hands full with the responses from y’all, and it might help us illuminate and maybe clarify some of our biggest game changers.
[0:22:48 – 0:22:49] Erik: I have some in mind, but…
[0:22:50 – 0:23:14] Adam: the fine folks on rbwca always bring something to light that i hadn’t thought of so i’m looking forward to going through these i have not read one response i’m going to start if that’s okay i haven’t read also for the record i have not read one response either okay i’ve not even looked at this i had that’s why i had to like literally send you a message like what exactly was the question i was trying to like work on my personal list yeah but how was it asked
[0:23:14 – 0:23:16] Adam: Wow, 14 points.
[0:23:16 – 0:23:18] Adam: Holy moly, hot dog.
[0:23:18 – 0:23:19] Adam: Might be a new record.
[0:23:20 – 0:23:22] Erik: New record for working in a coal mine.
[0:23:24 – 0:23:25] Erik: Nice and short here.
[0:23:26 – 0:23:31] Erik: Helinox chair, so great to relax after a long day of paddling.
[0:23:32 – 0:23:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:23:34 – 0:23:35] Erik: Wow.
[0:23:35 – 0:23:37] Adam: How’d that even make my own list?
[0:23:37 – 0:23:41] Erik: Yeah, my biggest game changes I think are going to revolve around comfort.
[0:23:41 – 0:23:44] Adam: Yeah, well, Helinox is definitely up there for me.
[0:23:44 – 0:23:48] Adam: It hadn’t been on my list, but it should have been.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:49] Adam: It really is.
[0:23:49 – 0:23:51] Adam: It is now.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:52] Adam: You know what I used to sit on.
[0:23:53 – 0:23:56] Adam: And since I wasn’t going to talk about this later, we can just bring this up now.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:58] Adam: I used to have like an old crazy creak.
[0:23:58 – 0:24:00] Adam: that lost one of its poles.
[0:24:00 – 0:24:09] Adam: So it was just a floppy kind of fabric taco that I would just throw in the back of the pack.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:14] Adam: And then only when we got to camp, I’d lean it up against a log and call it a chair.
[0:24:14 – 0:24:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:14 – 0:24:15] Adam: It was sad.
[0:24:15 – 0:24:20] Erik: Just in terms of my perspectives on the Helinox chairs, I send them out.
[0:24:20 – 0:24:24] Erik: If you’re not aware of what they are, they’re basically like aluminum poles, fold up.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:25] Erik: They all kind of come apart.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:28] Erik: It’s like mini tent, you know, they’re little bungee cords in there.
[0:24:29 – 0:24:36] Erik: And then the fabric chair part kind of tightens out around to be just a little like, yeah, like a butt scoop, like, you know.
[0:24:37 – 0:24:38] Adam: Yeah, it’s like a butt hammock.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:53] Erik: Yeah, but the thing for me as an outfitter that gets to send out this equipment on a day-to-day, year-to-year basis is I can usually tell pretty quick what’s going to stand up to the rigors of camping and what’s not.
[0:24:53 – 0:24:55] Adam: Yeah, the laboratory is open.
[0:24:56 – 0:25:02] Erik: I purchased for the lodge and the outfitters at Clearwater like 15 of those three years ago.
[0:25:02 – 0:25:02] Erik: Yeah.
[0:25:03 – 0:25:05] Erik: And I still have 15 of them.
[0:25:05 – 0:25:06] Erik: Not one has broken.
[0:25:06 – 0:25:08] Adam: That’s a ringing endorsement.
[0:25:08 – 0:25:13] Erik: It’s probably one of the finest pieces of equipment that I send out in terms of durability.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:14] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[0:25:14 – 0:25:15] Erik: About as high praise as you can get.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:23] Erik: Those things are almost indestructible as long as you move them away from the fires at the end of the night so they don’t get the little burn holes.
[0:25:24 – 0:25:32] Erik: But the poles, like, I mean, I send them out to like some pretty big dudes and to not have any poles have broken up to this point is miraculous.
[0:25:32 – 0:25:34] Erik: Do you have all the standard size ones?
[0:25:34 – 0:25:35] Erik: Standards, yeah.
[0:25:35 – 0:25:36] Erik: You don’t have any of the jumbo, super luxury.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:39] Erik: I don’t have the sparkle lounger like you do.
[0:25:39 – 0:25:40] Adam: It’s the throne.
[0:25:40 – 0:25:41] Erik: Yeah.
[0:25:41 – 0:25:41] Erik: Yeah.
[0:25:42 – 0:25:46] Adam: All right, next up, Monk Rome, 13 points.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:47] Adam: Holy moly.
[0:25:48 – 0:25:49] Adam: We’re getting some votes in here.
[0:25:51 – 0:25:53] Adam: Monk Rome chimes in.
[0:25:54 – 0:25:55] Adam: Lightweight canoes.
[0:25:55 – 0:26:05] Adam: When I was much younger, I would put an aluminum canoe, a gear backpack on my back, and a personal bag on each arm, probably a combined of 140 plus pounds.
[0:26:05 – 0:26:05] Adam: Jeez.
[0:26:06 – 0:26:08] Adam: As some misguided show of toughness.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:13] Adam: If I’m being honest with myself, I’m still proud of being able to carry that through half mile portages.
[0:26:14 – 0:26:26] Adam: now that i’m much older and not nearly in shape i really like being able to throw a 42 pound boat on my shoulders with only one backpack i’m happy to do the extra trip it’s a lot easier on the body yes
[0:26:27 – 0:26:27] Erik: Yeah.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:29 – 0:26:31] Adam: I definitely consider that’s a very big picture.
[0:26:31 – 0:26:32] Adam: It’s the boat.
[0:26:32 – 0:26:35] Adam: I mean, it’s probably the most important piece of gear you take.
[0:26:35 – 0:26:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:35 – 0:26:44] Erik: I think, I mean, it probably would be higher up on my list if it was, if I had more experience with like the bigger, heavier canoes.
[0:26:44 – 0:26:45] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:45 – 0:26:52] Adam: I’m glad that I also had the chance to, like, take three-person aluminum grummins over to Caribou in the mud.
[0:26:52 – 0:26:56] Adam: But, yeah, I mean, you got to take care of the old body.
[0:26:57 – 0:26:57] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:57 – 0:26:59] Adam: Now that I’m in the fall of my life.
[0:27:01 – 0:27:12] Adam: There’s a response on here saying it’s a youngster that never had to endure these hardships and said, you know, I would never probably have mustered the courage to try the Boundary Waters without Kevlar, so…
[0:27:12 – 0:27:15] Adam: I always say… That’s a paraphrase from Long Blue Veil.
[0:27:15 – 0:27:16] Erik: Thank you.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:16] Erik: Three points.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:18] Erik: Yeah, lots of conversation.
[0:27:18 – 0:27:22] Erik: I like that there was a lot of conversation had.
[0:27:23 – 0:27:29] Erik: I like that the RBWCA community seems like there’s just more and more activity on it.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:30] Erik: Yeah, that’s good to see.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:49] Erik: If it has anything to do with us or not, but it’s just great to see it being, I think, two, well, a year and a half ago when I kind of started sniffing around the place, there was a lot of users and it was active, but it was like, you know, I think like maybe 700 or 800 people on there.
[0:27:49 – 0:27:50] Adam: I think it’s 1,800 now.
[0:27:51 – 0:28:03] Erik: Yeah, you go quite a long time without seeing any new posts, and maybe it’s just because it is the summer and people are out there in the park that there’s pretty regular posts, even if it’s just like, hey, look at this picture I took.
[0:28:03 – 0:28:04] Erik: I think it’s cool.
[0:28:04 – 0:28:07] Adam: If there’s anything, people love to talk about gear, too.
[0:28:08 – 0:28:09] Adam: Yeah, that’s true.
[0:28:09 – 0:28:12] Adam: Off-season, middle of the season, doesn’t matter.
[0:28:12 – 0:28:13] Adam: People love to talk about gear.
[0:28:13 – 0:28:16] Adam: That’s why I figured it was going to just be more gear-centric.
[0:28:16 – 0:28:16] Adam: I assume they’ll…
[0:28:17 – 0:28:17] Adam: It seems like it is so far.
[0:28:17 – 0:28:19] Adam: It’s going to be some posts of the mind, too.
[0:28:20 – 0:28:23] Erik: Well, I’m sure there’ll be somebody down at the very end.
[0:28:23 – 0:28:26] Erik: I’m sure printing, printing will come in with the last second.
[0:28:26 – 0:28:27] Erik: On strategy.
[0:28:27 – 0:28:28] Erik: Yeah, real metaphorical.
[0:28:28 – 0:28:29] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:28:30 – 0:28:39] Adam: Part of that one was saying instead of trying to do everything at once in single portage, just admitting that it’s easier to double portage and what’s the hurry?
[0:28:39 – 0:28:40] Adam: Yeah, I had that.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:42] Adam: That’s part of the new wave, too, I think.
[0:28:42 – 0:28:44] Erik: I had that change.
[0:28:44 – 0:28:47] Erik: I started the first big trip up into Coetico.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:52] Erik: It was all single portages and then halfway through it was just, this is insane.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:54] Erik: Let’s just start breaking this up.
[0:28:54 – 0:28:56] Adam: There’s no reason.
[0:28:56 – 0:28:57] Erik: We don’t have anywhere to be.
[0:28:58 – 0:28:58] Erik: No.
[0:28:59 – 0:29:01] Adam: So that’s a part of the strategy.
[0:29:01 – 0:29:07] Adam: That was the main part of that comment was on gear being the boat itself, but also a bit of strategy.
[0:29:08 – 0:29:09] Adam: A shift in mentality.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:11] Adam: That’s a good thing.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:14] Adam: It shows that we’re learning and evolving.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:16] Erik: Yeah, I think that’s the point.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:18] Erik: Smoke Chaser, 10 points.
[0:29:19 – 0:29:27] Erik: My biggest game changer was when I committed to breaking camp and being on the water during sunrise on travel days in the wilderness.
[0:29:28 – 0:29:40] Erik: You know you’re going to be moving that day anyway, so why not break camp in the pre-dawn half-light, eat a warm bowl of oatmeal as you load the canoe, and dip your paddle in the flat, calm water as the fog lifts.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:48] Erik: My best photos, wildlife sightings, and quiet moments of reflection happen as the wilderness wakes up around you.
[0:29:49 – 0:29:56] Erik: Arriving at your destination lake by lunchtime or early afternoon feels great too as an added side benefit.
[0:29:57 – 0:29:57] Adam: Yeah.
[0:29:58 – 0:30:04] Adam: Yeah, that’s nice, but anytime I pull that trick, I end up in bed at first as soon as it’s dark.
[0:30:04 – 0:30:05] Adam: That’s true, too.
[0:30:06 – 0:30:06] Adam: Which is fine.
[0:30:06 – 0:30:20] Erik: Yeah, I mean, you’ve got to weigh your options on that, but I’ve taken trips on both sides where it’s up before the sun, usually during the heat of the summer where I’m worried about campsites, and we talked about this a few weeks ago.
[0:30:20 – 0:30:48] Erik: oh yeah getting out on the water early but it is nice you know you don’t have to worry about that wind it’s just something so unsettling about you know sitting in the hammock and you’re kind of maybe just roll over one more time and then that next time you wake up you hear that like yeah yeah shoot and we haven’t even started to break down camp yeah the little sag uh quantum helix trip we did we really got it after it early drinking beer in the round like parking lot at like 5 30 in the morning
[0:30:48 – 0:30:53] Erik: Well, we had the fortune of knowing the forecast at the time.
[0:30:54 – 0:30:57] Adam: But that was probably the last time I’ve really been moving that early in the day.
[0:30:57 – 0:30:58] Erik: Yeah.
[0:31:00 – 0:31:01] Adam: Other than for work.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:02] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:31:06 – 0:31:09] Adam: Caribou Lover, 9 points.
[0:31:10 – 0:31:15] Adam: What’s had the most overall impact for me is the small NOAA weather radio.
[0:31:16 – 0:31:25] Adam: This allows me to know if any crazy storms are coming or are forecasted, and also what the wind situation is going to be for the next few hours or the next day.
[0:31:26 – 0:31:35] Adam: If I’m on a big lake and it’s been several days into the trip, I can get an updated forecast and know if I should get out especially early to avoid the afternoon winds.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:45] Adam: Regarding storms, I was on Horse Lake with my family a few Julys ago, and the radio was saying the whole weekend, big storms are coming Sunday night.
[0:31:46 – 0:31:46] Adam: I can do better.
[0:31:47 – 0:31:49] Adam: Big storms coming Sunday night.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:31:51 – 0:32:01] Adam: We exited Sunday afternoon and checked the radar as soon as we hit Ely, and the radar was lit up with huge oncoming storms, which turned out to be one of the bigger wind events up here over the last decade.
[0:32:01 – 0:32:02] Adam: Super nice to know what’s coming.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:04] Adam: Yes.
[0:32:06 – 0:32:08] Adam: Yeah, that’s timely.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:10] Adam: We literally just were talking about it.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:12] Erik: Yeah, I think the… Caribou Lumber.
[0:32:13 – 0:32:19] Erik: Bringing out of the weather radio is a for sure thing for me, especially on guided trips.
[0:32:20 – 0:32:23] Erik: And then anything over like four or five days.
[0:32:24 – 0:32:29] Erik: If it’s just like a three-day trip, I don’t worry about it too much because I get a pretty good idea of like what the forecast is going out.
[0:32:30 – 0:32:41] Erik: But like those month-long trips, I was talking with a guy that works for North Star Canoes though about some longer trips that he likes to take.
[0:32:42 – 0:32:54] Erik: And he likes not taking the weather radio because of some of the things that helps you connect with more.
[0:32:56 – 0:33:01] Erik: Like you pay attention to things a little bit more in the weather and the rain.
[0:33:01 – 0:33:08] Erik: And I guess to a certain extent, if it’s July and it’s thunderstorm season, that can be maybe borderline bad.
[0:33:09 – 0:33:10] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:15] Erik: But if you’re out just you and somebody else in the fall, I don’t know.
[0:33:15 – 0:33:24] Erik: I kind of got where he was coming from where it’s like, it’s kind of fun to just be out there for a few weeks and then all of a sudden you’re just like, I have no idea what tomorrow is going to bring.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:26] Erik: I don’t have anywhere to be.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:28] Erik: I think that’s probably the biggest…
[0:33:30 – 0:33:49] Erik: differentiation between a five day trip where you have to be back in the office on Monday or whatever you don’t want to mess around with just like whatever the weather does is fine versus like we’re out here for a month like if it takes us 33 days versus 29 it doesn’t really matter it’s kind of fun to just be like whatever the weather does
[0:33:49 – 0:33:57] Erik: You kind of can get a little bit more into the flow of like the season and the nature and cooling down.
[0:33:57 – 0:33:59] Erik: What kind of a weather system is this?
[0:33:59 – 0:34:00] Erik: Is this just passing?
[0:34:00 – 0:34:01] Erik: Is it going to hang out?
[0:34:02 – 0:34:02] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:34:02 – 0:34:03] Adam: I always like having it.
[0:34:04 – 0:34:08] Adam: It doesn’t hurt to have a little update on what’s expected.
[0:34:08 – 0:34:10] Adam: It might not always be what pans out.
[0:34:10 – 0:34:14] Adam: I also just love to scroll the AM dial at night in camp.
[0:34:14 – 0:34:19] Adam: If I’m on a long trip, it’s better than a book sometimes.
[0:34:19 – 0:34:25] Adam: I’ve mentioned I like to tune into the Packers radio network from time to time if possible.
[0:34:26 – 0:34:27] Adam: I enjoy having the radio with me.
[0:34:27 – 0:34:29] Adam: That said, I don’t want it on the whole time either.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:30] Erik: Right.
[0:34:30 – 0:34:30] Adam: Check it.
[0:34:30 – 0:34:30] Adam: All right.
[0:34:31 – 0:34:31] Adam: Put it away.
[0:34:32 – 0:34:34] Adam: So we had a couple of comments in there.
[0:34:35 – 0:34:38] Erik: Oh, some interesting comments of some storm.
[0:34:38 – 0:34:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:34:39 – 0:34:43] Adam: More people chiming in on, you know, just wind events.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:34:44 – 0:34:47] Erik: So if you’re interested in reading more on the responses.
[0:34:48 – 0:34:49] Erik: R-B-W-C-A.
[0:34:50 – 0:34:50] Erik: Check that out.
[0:34:50 – 0:34:54] Adam: Yeah, we’re not going to be able to get to everything here, obviously.
[0:34:54 – 0:34:55] Adam: We got to talk, too.
[0:34:55 – 0:35:04] Erik: Yeah, the full responses, the actual responses, any of the comments below them, those are yours.
[0:35:05 – 0:35:07] Erik: Oh, boy, here’s another.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:11] Erik: We’ve had this conversation before about the usernames.
[0:35:11 – 0:35:14] Erik: Here’s you, paintswithsmegma.
[0:35:14 – 0:35:14] Erik: Thank you.
[0:35:14 – 0:35:16] Adam: Yeah, I don’t have to bleep that.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:17] Erik: I’m not going to have to bleep that.
[0:35:17 – 0:35:19] Adam: Yeah, you can’t say that on the radio.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:20] Erik: I’m not bleeping it.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:21] Erik: We’re too far in.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:23] Adam: You can bleep at 35.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:24] Adam: I’m going to note that.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:25] Adam: I’m going to write that down.
[0:35:25 – 0:35:26] Adam: We’ve said his name.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:27] Adam: I know.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:29] Adam: We’ve said it plenty of times before.
[0:35:29 – 0:35:32] Adam: I know, but I’m pretty sure that it’s too dirty.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:33] Adam: It’s not that dirty.
[0:35:34 – 0:35:37] Erik: If you didn’t say anything, it wouldn’t even be a thing.
[0:35:37 – 0:35:41] Erik: Now we have to go back and definitely bleep it because everybody’s going to know.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:42] Adam: What’s the name?
[0:35:42 – 0:35:45] Adam: Well, then go on Reddit and you’ll be able to find out if it’s dirty or not.
[0:35:45 – 0:35:46] Adam: It’s up to you to judge.
[0:35:46 – 0:35:48] Adam: It’s not dirty, actually, at all.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:50] Adam: It’s not vulgar.
[0:35:50 – 0:35:50] Erik: Is it?
[0:35:51 – 0:35:51] Erik: No.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:52] Erik: There’s nothing vulgar about it.
[0:35:54 – 0:35:55] Adam: It’s not like…
[0:35:55 – 0:35:56] Adam: It’s a matter of opinion.
[0:35:57 – 0:35:58] Adam: It’s definitely a matter of opinion.
[0:35:58 – 0:35:59] Adam: I don’t care.
[0:35:59 – 0:36:01] Adam: You can have whatever you want for your Reddit name.
[0:36:01 – 0:36:03] Erik: Stay tuned for Tumble Home After Hours.
[0:36:03 – 0:36:05] Erik: We’re going to decide whether or not the…
[0:36:05 – 0:36:07] Adam: The thought police are coming into Studio K. Yeah.
[0:36:07 – 0:36:10] Adam: What’s okay to say on a podcast.
[0:36:10 – 0:36:17] Erik: Actually, Tumble Home After Hours this week is going to be a conversation that I open up to you.
[0:36:18 – 0:36:19] Erik: It’s a business idea.
[0:36:19 – 0:36:20] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:36:20 – 0:36:24] Adam: We may or may not be starting a new business.
[0:36:25 – 0:36:26] Adam: Does it involve board games?
[0:36:26 – 0:36:27] Erik: Does not.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:29] Erik: It’s the dumb business idea.
[0:36:30 – 0:36:30] Adam: Oh, okay.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:34] Adam: Should definitely form an LLC and invest.
[0:36:34 – 0:36:34] Erik: Okay.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:38] Erik: So previously said user.
[0:36:38 – 0:36:39] Erik: Nine points.
[0:36:40 – 0:36:42] Erik: Platypus gravity filter.
[0:36:45 – 0:36:45] Erik: That is good.
[0:36:45 – 0:36:46] Erik: This is funny.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:48] Erik: This is just a list of big game changers.
[0:36:48 – 0:36:49] Erik: The second one is great.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:53] Erik: Extra long spoon for reaching the bottom of stuff.
[0:36:54 – 0:36:54] Adam: Yes.
[0:36:55 – 0:36:55] Adam: Yes.
[0:36:55 – 0:36:56] Adam: That’s probably the best one.
[0:36:56 – 0:36:57] Adam: I’m going to write that one down.
[0:36:58 – 0:37:04] Erik: hammock with straps and a tarp, bear barrel with a ratchet strap, dehydrated dog food.
[0:37:06 – 0:37:07] Erik: Yeah, okay.
[0:37:08 – 0:37:09] Adam: I’ve not tried that.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:13] Erik: There is a question, dehydrated dog food, question mark?
[0:37:13 – 0:37:16] Adam: Isn’t dog food already dehydrated?
[0:37:16 – 0:37:17] Adam: Kind of already, yeah.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:23] Adam: Or is he literally just taking the stuff in the can and throwing it in the dehydrator?
[0:37:23 – 0:37:24] Erik: Dehydrating the wet stuff?
[0:37:24 – 0:37:25] Erik: He’s dehydrated.
[0:37:25 – 0:37:29] Erik: Could you imagine how horrible putting a can of alcohol on the dehydrator would be?
[0:37:29 – 0:37:30] Erik: It already smells bad.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:34] Erik: Yeah.
[0:37:34 – 0:37:38] Erik: You would need a shed or just put it outside.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:40] Adam: I think it’s fine.
[0:37:41 – 0:37:41] Adam: Here’s better.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:45] Adam: You just get one of those little dog vests and then dog can carry their own food weight.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:49] Adam: And then you don’t have to ruin your dehydrator.
[0:37:50 – 0:37:50] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:37:51 – 0:37:51] Adam: Dehydrate.
[0:37:51 – 0:37:56] Erik: I mean, I’m still trying to read the comments here on what.
[0:37:57 – 0:38:01] Adam: You’re going to need an extra long spoon to dehydrate that food properly.
[0:38:04 – 0:38:05] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:07] Erik: You might need more information.
[0:38:07 – 0:38:08] Erik: Ah, here we go.
[0:38:08 – 0:38:15] Erik: The brand is called Honest Kitchen and it reconstitutes into oatmeal like sludge.
[0:38:16 – 0:38:19] Erik: Doesn’t look great, but yeah, the dog doesn’t care.
[0:38:19 – 0:38:20] Erik: My dog goes bonkers for it.
[0:38:21 – 0:38:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:21 – 0:38:21] Erik: Wow.
[0:38:23 – 0:38:23] Erik: Huh.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:25] Adam: I mean, I guess, yeah.
[0:38:25 – 0:38:27] Adam: Can’t the dog just eat dehydrated spaghetti?
[0:38:30 – 0:38:32] Adam: What was the stuff we made, the old?
[0:38:32 – 0:38:35] Erik: Oh, the crap we ate on the first episode of the Bums Patreon?
[0:38:35 – 0:38:36] Erik: Cramp more, yeah.
[0:38:36 – 0:38:38] Erik: Dehydrate, yeah, I think it was just camp more.
[0:38:38 – 0:38:40] Erik: Expired spaghetti.
[0:38:42 – 0:38:57] Erik: pasta spaghetti interesting yeah the dehydrated dog food i guess that i mean if you’re out there for a while that can make a big difference yeah that’s why we got the vest for arrow so i think my favorite she carries her own food my favorite response is the extra long spoon so oh i see
[0:38:59 – 0:39:02] Adam: Yeah, I have to upvote the Gravity Filter, too.
[0:39:03 – 0:39:04] Adam: I had that in my notes.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:07] Adam: That’s one of my favorite new pieces of gear was the Gravity.
[0:39:07 – 0:39:09] Adam: I have an MSP.
[0:39:10 – 0:39:12] Erik: Gravity Filters in general are kind of the easiest.
[0:39:12 – 0:39:13] Adam: Just because it was on sale that week.
[0:39:13 – 0:39:16] Adam: The Platypus has excellent reviews as well.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:21] Adam: My buddy Trevor, he got me on the Gravity Filter.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:21] Adam: Way back when.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:23] Adam: He was also one of the first people…
[0:39:23 – 0:39:27] Adam: This was on our way back when we did the trip to Swan, and he caught the big walleye.
[0:39:27 – 0:39:27] Erik: Yeah.
[0:39:28 – 0:39:33] Adam: And he was one of the first people to have one of the Helinox-style camp chairs.
[0:39:33 – 0:39:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:39:34 – 0:39:34] Adam: And…
[0:39:34 – 0:39:35] Erik: It wasn’t a Helinox.
[0:39:35 – 0:39:36] Erik: It wasn’t a Helinox.
[0:39:36 – 0:39:37] Adam: I don’t remember the brand.
[0:39:37 – 0:39:38] Adam: What?
[0:39:38 – 0:39:39] Adam: Didn’t he give that to you?
[0:39:39 – 0:39:41] Adam: Well, I ended up buying that one from him because he had a new one.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:42] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:39:42 – 0:39:42] Erik: You bought it from him.
[0:39:42 – 0:39:45] Adam: And then I bought that little one off him, and then I ended up…
[0:39:45 – 0:39:46] Adam: It did break eventually.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:46] Adam: It did break.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:47] Adam: And I tried to like…
[0:39:48 – 0:40:03] Adam: uh jb weld it back together and jb well that lasted about no no five minutes yeah wasn’t it like a the i remember the logo was like a butterfly or something yeah it was like a nice yellow and white striped looking it was a nice looking chair
[0:40:03 – 0:40:05] Erik: Helinox is the way to go on.
[0:40:05 – 0:40:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:40:05 – 0:40:08] Adam: Trevor, you know, huge shout out to Trevor.
[0:40:08 – 0:40:12] Adam: He’s always been like a very forward thinking gear minded person.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:19] Erik: Well, he had the, the Yeti on that trip too, which is also like, we still had ice at the end of the trip somehow.
[0:40:20 – 0:40:20] Adam: Amazing.
[0:40:21 – 0:40:27] Adam: Uh, we going farther into the, uh, no, we’re not going farther into the comments here on the comments already there.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:29] Adam: Yes.
[0:40:30 – 0:40:30] Adam: All right.
[0:40:31 – 0:40:32] Adam: Moving on.
[0:40:33 – 0:40:35] Adam: Shoveling water.
[0:40:36 – 0:40:36] Adam: Nine points.
[0:40:37 – 0:40:42] Adam: Switching from a straight shaft paddle to a bent shaft has been a game changer for me.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:49] Adam: The shoulder pain I used to experience during every long paddle is now almost non-existent after making the switch.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:56] Adam: The other change in my setup that I made this year was turning my water filter into a gravity system.
[0:40:57 – 0:41:04] Adam: Simply filling up a bag with a filter attached, hanging it from a branch, and walking away while gravity does all the work.
[0:41:04 – 0:41:07] Adam: It’s hands down the best way I’ve found to filter water.
[0:41:08 – 0:41:12] Adam: Never again will I mess around with pumps, tablets, or any of that other nonsense.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:15] Adam: Huzzah, huzzah, shoveling water.
[0:41:15 – 0:41:18] Adam: Nine points, and I will award an extra point.
[0:41:19 – 0:41:20] Adam: Well written.
[0:41:20 – 0:41:20] Adam: Yeah.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:27] Adam: So that’s two votes for gravity water filter systems, and I also am throwing my vote in on gravity water.
[0:41:28 – 0:41:34] Adam: If you’re still pumping or tableting or any of the other nonsense, time to up your game.
[0:41:34 – 0:41:34] Erik: If you’re still boiling.
[0:41:35 – 0:41:36] Adam: Let gravity do the work.
[0:41:39 – 0:42:01] Adam: uh yeah i mean i think the gravity filter takes basically everything out of the equation i love the gravity filter and i’m gonna i will not mention it as one of mine i guess but i had it written down as one of my potential game changers but uh i’m on board big deal oh i’m gonna read two because these are both like one sentence as long and this is um
[0:42:03 – 0:42:04] Erik: This is very sweet.
[0:42:04 – 0:42:08] Erik: This is from Ghost of Ed Abbey, listening to Tumble Home.
[0:42:11 – 0:42:14] Adam: I think Ghost of Ed Abbey is my favorite friend on Reddit.
[0:42:15 – 0:42:15] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:42:16 – 0:42:20] Adam: They’ve had numerous eloquent comments on the show.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:23] Erik: We have so many friends, though.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:25] Erik: Well, I’m just saying.
[0:42:25 – 0:42:26] Adam: It’s a great username.
[0:42:26 – 0:42:26] Erik: All right.
[0:42:26 – 0:42:28] Erik: It does have that going for it.
[0:42:28 – 0:42:29] Adam: And they…
[0:42:29 – 0:42:29] Adam: It.
[0:42:31 – 0:42:32] Erik: That’s the way I’ve gotten my friend.
[0:42:32 – 0:42:36] Adam: You just say that our friend is very eloquent.
[0:42:36 – 0:42:38] Adam: Keeping it androgynous.
[0:42:38 – 0:42:44] Adam: Never hurts to stoke the ego of Eric or I.
[0:42:45 – 0:42:46] Erik: Thanks, Ghost of Ed Abbey.
[0:42:47 – 0:42:50] Erik: I’m going to go back to back here because the next one’s pretty short too.
[0:42:50 – 0:42:53] Erik: This is from David hyphen Putty.
[0:42:54 – 0:42:54] Erik: Six points.
[0:42:55 – 0:42:58] Erik: LED battery powered lights are amazing.
[0:42:58 – 0:42:59] Erik: Party lights?
[0:42:59 – 0:42:59] Erik: Yes.
[0:42:59 – 0:43:00] Erik: Are you serious?
[0:43:00 – 0:43:02] Erik: I can’t imagine going on a trip without them.
[0:43:02 – 0:43:04] Erik: They’ve made lanterns obsolete.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:05] Adam: Putty.
[0:43:06 – 0:43:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:07 – 0:43:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:09 – 0:43:13] Adam: Can you imagine the olden days of bringing a propane lantern out?
[0:43:13 – 0:43:15] Adam: I used to do that when I car camped a lot.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:16] Erik: God, those things are such a pain.
[0:43:17 – 0:43:17] Erik: How many garbs?
[0:43:17 – 0:43:19] Adam: You had to like garb the mantle?
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Adam: Yeah, mantles have I gone through in my life.
[0:43:20 – 0:43:24] Erik: And then they’re just like, it gets knocked a little too hard and then it just shatters.
[0:43:24 – 0:43:30] Adam: The Coleman powerhouse is a fine lantern, but gee whiz, that thing, it just, nonstop headaches.
[0:43:30 – 0:43:31] Adam: Remember?
[0:43:31 – 0:43:34] Adam: You jostle it the wrong way, you spill a little gas.
[0:43:36 – 0:43:38] Adam: Man, it really lights up the forest at night.
[0:43:38 – 0:43:39] Erik: Yeah, that’s the other thing.
[0:43:39 – 0:43:40] Erik: You don’t need that much light.
[0:43:40 – 0:43:40] Erik: No.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:44] Adam: We’re trying to play a night badminton game for some reason.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:51] Erik: It is insanely bright, and the one time that we definitely did appreciate having the brightness was the second trip I ever took.
[0:43:52 – 0:43:53] Erik: We got to our first campsite.
[0:43:53 – 0:44:01] Erik: We were doing the Granite River, and we got out there, and the bag of headlights, sunscreen, bug spray got forgotten.
[0:44:01 – 0:44:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:44:02 – 0:44:05] Erik: So all we had for light was the big Coleman gas lantern.
[0:44:06 – 0:44:13] Erik: And so we had to like, anytime anybody wanted to like go somewhere, you had to like travel with a lantern.
[0:44:14 – 0:44:18] Adam: You should have somebody assigned as designated lantern keeper.
[0:44:18 – 0:44:19] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:22] Adam: I will fight back the darkness for you.
[0:44:22 – 0:44:26] Erik: But it was insanely bright when that thing was at full blast.
[0:44:26 – 0:44:31] Adam: Coleman powerhouse is literally the like, it’s one twelfth of a neutron star.
[0:44:32 – 0:44:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:44:32 – 0:44:41] Erik: But then now like they still have the like eight D cell battery plastic crap lanterns too.
[0:44:41 – 0:44:42] Adam: Those things are terrible.
[0:44:42 – 0:44:43] Erik: They’re the worst.
[0:44:43 – 0:44:49] Erik: They’re not half as bright and they weigh like maybe even a little bit more and they don’t last half as long.
[0:44:49 – 0:44:57] Erik: But the LED like lighting just in general, like you’ve got a couple of little strips of the party lights, like obviously headlamps.
[0:44:58 – 0:44:58] Erik: Yeah.
[0:44:58 – 0:44:59] Erik: Huge.
[0:44:59 – 0:45:01] Erik: Like I couldn’t even imagine going out without a headlamp.
[0:45:02 – 0:45:08] Adam: Remember back in the day you’d see people with these headlamps that looked like they were going into a coal mine circa 1840.
[0:45:08 – 0:45:09] Erik: Oh, yeah, the big round ones.
[0:45:09 – 0:45:13] Adam: Got like a hand crank headlamp.
[0:45:13 – 0:45:15] Adam: He’s not firing up a weather radio over there.
[0:45:16 – 0:45:20] Adam: He’s going 1,200 feet below ground to extract minerals.
[0:45:22 – 0:45:23] Adam: Moving on.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:28] Adam: Do042, friend of the show, five points.
[0:45:28 – 0:45:28] Adam: Yes.
[0:45:31 – 0:45:38] Adam: I’m sure this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but a battery-operated radio has become a staple for me.
[0:45:38 – 0:45:44] Adam: Still plenty of quiet time to go around while hiking and paddling, but when in the campsite, it’s a fun distraction.
[0:45:46 – 0:45:48] Adam: Even more so when I’m solo.
[0:45:48 – 0:45:51] Adam: Dew has mentioned he enjoys solo camping quite a bit.
[0:45:53 – 0:45:55] Adam: Not to mention the weather band benefits.
[0:45:56 – 0:45:59] Adam: Not totally guessing the weather is a game-changer.
[0:46:01 – 0:46:02] Adam: We have a response.
[0:46:02 – 0:46:04] Adam: And you can listen to WTIP.
[0:46:05 – 0:46:06] Adam: Thank you, MN, for you.
[0:46:06 – 0:46:08] Adam: Four points for that response.
[0:46:09 – 0:46:10] Adam: Yes, absolutely.
[0:46:10 – 0:46:13] Adam: You can listen to our next radio show.
[0:46:14 – 0:46:14] Adam: Monday.
[0:46:14 – 0:46:17] Adam: Which we will never tell you.
[0:46:17 – 0:46:19] Erik: It will never be possible for you to hear this.
[0:46:19 – 0:46:20] Erik: It’s next Monday.
[0:46:20 – 0:46:22] Adam: Which was last Monday.
[0:46:23 – 0:46:26] Adam: If you’re scoring at home, you missed our Best of 1990 podcast.
[0:46:27 – 0:46:28] Erik: You’re not missing out on much.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:37] Adam: Well, there’s Vanilla Ice, Ice Ice Baby, MC Hammer came out, and the third New Kids on the Block album came out.
[0:46:37 – 0:46:38] Erik: Public Enemy has an album, I think.
[0:46:39 – 0:46:40] Erik: What’s the one…
[0:46:42 – 0:47:11] Erik: uh women’s band that was like the number one hit from the night wilson phillips wilson the women’s band you mean wilson phillips all right sorry all i could picture was the album cover which is like four ladies and jeans and like it’s so good denim vests wilson phillips had a song hold on and then in vogue yeah it was in vogue also had an album out when their number one single was called hold on i think all that’s all i’m just every song i’m just gonna play wilson phillips
[0:47:11 – 0:47:23] Adam: So, yeah, you could have listened to us playing Wilson Phillips and En Vogue and possibly some MC Hammer on WTIP if you have a battery-powered radio.
[0:47:23 – 0:47:32] Adam: I’m fine with a hand crank radio, but sometimes those things, especially if it’s cold, you can crank and crank and crank, and then, like, after a minute, it starts to get a little fuzzy.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:35] Adam: And you got to keep cranking, and it’s like, are we even listening to something here?
[0:47:35 – 0:47:40] Adam: You can’t even get through the French weather band out of Quetico once before you got to re-crank.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:42 – 0:47:52] Erik: Yeah, the weather band circuit, the format that they have, it’s like, get to the actual weather.
[0:47:53 – 0:48:04] Erik: They talk about, especially when you’re close to the shore, like 90% of it is like marine weather, which I guess is probably important for the guys out on the lake.
[0:48:04 – 0:48:05] Erik: Swells of 5 to 10.
[0:48:05 – 0:48:06] Erik: What’s that even mean?
[0:48:08 – 0:48:09] Erik: Doesn’t affect me.
[0:48:09 – 0:48:11] Erik: I’m on the inland waters.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:19] Erik: We’ve got five points coming in from union underscore thug underscore.
[0:48:19 – 0:48:21] Erik: That deserves a party horn.
[0:48:21 – 0:48:22] Erik: Additional underscore.
[0:48:22 – 0:48:23] Erik: Yeah, at the end.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:27] Erik: For nothing, for underscoring into nothing else.
[0:48:27 – 0:48:29] Erik: That’s a table for our beer of the week.
[0:48:30 – 0:48:31] Adam: That’s ballast points.
[0:48:31 – 0:48:33] Adam: Spruce tipped scope and IPA.
[0:48:34 – 0:48:34] Adam: Shout out, Todd.
[0:48:34 – 0:48:35] Adam: They’re going down well.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:37] Adam: Shout out, Todd.
[0:48:37 – 0:48:39] Adam: It is a smooth IPA.
[0:48:39 – 0:48:40] Adam: Well, mine’s gone.
[0:48:40 – 0:48:42] Adam: Eric still has half of his somehow.
[0:48:42 – 0:48:42] Erik: I do.
[0:48:43 – 0:48:46] Erik: I had a little bit more of the iced coffee yet to work on here.
[0:48:48 – 0:48:50] Adam: Bear vault, period.
[0:48:52 – 0:48:52] Adam: End of statement.
[0:48:52 – 0:48:58] Erik: Not needing to hang a bear bag without a doubt has changed my experience the most.
[0:48:59 – 0:49:00] Adam: Yeah, that’s a good point.
[0:49:00 – 0:49:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:01 – 0:49:03] Adam: Hanging a bear bag is a pain in the buns.
[0:49:04 – 0:49:04] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:05] Adam: Pain in the buns.
[0:49:06 – 0:49:08] Erik: And there’s a website, the Bear Vault.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:11] Erik: He is referring to are those like hard plastic ones.
[0:49:12 – 0:49:12] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:12 – 0:49:17] Erik: With like the lid that has like the little notch on top.
[0:49:17 – 0:49:17] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:17 – 0:49:19] Erik: Not the big blue barrels that we use.
[0:49:19 – 0:49:21] Erik: Those are not 100% bear proof, I would say.
[0:49:23 – 0:49:25] Erik: What are they, bear resistant?
[0:49:25 – 0:49:26] Erik: Bear resistant.
[0:49:27 – 0:49:42] Erik: And if you know where to line up the top strap in terms of like where the big lever comes out, I would say it’s bear proof enough that I’m going to know something is going on before the bear is actually like ripping into it.
[0:49:43 – 0:50:11] Erik: yeah um the the bear vaults are those like clear blue plastic ones with the crazy like hard black top uh-huh like i think those are definitely like 100 bear proof um but they’re like the sizes of them and how they fit into packs is a little awkward sometimes so the big blue barrel is where i’m at with that but the bear vault over niagara falls inside of one and still be okay
[0:50:12 – 0:50:13] Erik: No, definitely not.
[0:50:14 – 0:50:14] Erik: All right.
[0:50:14 – 0:50:18] Erik: The same reason why football helmets will never alleviate concussions.
[0:50:18 – 0:50:19] Erik: It’s not the contact.
[0:50:20 – 0:50:25] Erik: It’s the going from moving to stopping as fast as you do and the sloshing of the brain.
[0:50:27 – 0:50:28] Adam: Yeah, you don’t want that.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:34] Erik: So the Bear Vault would not keep your brain slash aorta from sloshing away from your heart going over the Niagara.
[0:50:34 – 0:50:37] Adam: Do you think I need a bike helmet to be bike-joring with the dog?
[0:50:37 – 0:50:38] Adam: How fast are you going?
[0:50:39 – 0:50:40] Adam: I don’t have a GPS.
[0:50:40 – 0:50:41] Adam: You should take out a GPS.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:43] Adam: My paper maps don’t tell me anything on this.
[0:50:45 – 0:50:46] Erik: Never rely on a GPS.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:48] Erik: Well, I don’t know.
[0:50:48 – 0:50:51] Adam: I would say we’re maybe doing 10 miles an hour.
[0:50:51 – 0:50:52] Erik: Yeah, you should definitely have a helmet on.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:53] Erik: Well…
[0:50:55 – 0:51:00] Adam: I’ll have to go down to the recycling center and see if I can get an old snowmobile helmet for a quarter.
[0:51:00 – 0:51:01] Erik: Old football helmet.
[0:51:02 – 0:51:04] Adam: All right.
[0:51:04 – 0:51:05] Adam: Where’s my cursor here?
[0:51:06 – 0:51:09] Adam: Digital Reddit.
[0:51:10 – 0:51:14] Adam: Advsock1.
[0:51:14 – 0:51:15] Adam: Five points.
[0:51:17 – 0:51:18] Adam: Pocket bellows.
[0:51:19 – 0:51:20] Adam: Packing lighter.
[0:51:21 – 0:51:24] Adam: Tang Neos for tequila sunrises.
[0:51:26 – 0:51:31] Adam: But most of all, a Seenock bag and Sawyer Squeeze for water.
[0:51:33 – 0:51:34] Erik: More on the water.
[0:51:35 – 0:51:40] Erik: Is it kind of an in-between gravity slash pump filter?
[0:51:42 – 0:51:43] Adam: I’m not exactly sure.
[0:51:43 – 0:51:44] Adam: Should we take a break and look this up?
[0:51:47 – 0:51:47] Adam: Nah.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:51] Adam: Seenock bag and a Sawyer squeeze for water.
[0:51:51 – 0:51:54] Adam: We don’t know what that is, but we’ll take your word for it.
[0:51:54 – 0:51:54] Adam: We’ll look it up later.
[0:51:54 – 0:51:57] Adam: It is some sort of advanced water delivery system.
[0:51:57 – 0:51:59] Erik: We’ll look it up and get back to you.
[0:51:59 – 0:52:00] Erik: We’re on a roll here.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:03] Adam: We can’t just take a break and go on the Google.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:04] Adam: No.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:07] Adam: MN4U is coming up for you.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:12] Erik: MN4U, our NEMA Bugout 12×12 screen tarp.
[0:52:14 – 0:52:39] Erik: oh what and powdered bloody mary mix were a good pair this year this is all that powdered alcohol uh craze wow that sounds amazing bloody mary mix powdered where do i find this huh it probably it can’t be the alcohol it’s got to just be like the tomatoes yeah it’s just got to be the spice yeah yeah okay
[0:52:41 – 0:52:43] Erik: Oh, no, there’s a tangent here.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:45] Erik: Another response from Ghost of Ed Abbey.
[0:52:46 – 0:52:51] Erik: Then also a little spinoff regarding pizza biters.
[0:52:51 – 0:52:52] Erik: Yeah, hashtag.
[0:52:52 – 0:52:55] Erik: It’s been too long since we talked about pizza biters.
[0:52:55 – 0:52:57] Adam: Ghost of Ed Abbey, five points.
[0:52:58 – 0:53:02] Adam: Not really a strategy or a revaluation.
[0:53:03 – 0:53:05] Adam: I think that was supposed to be a revelation.
[0:53:06 – 0:53:07] Erik: Or a re-evaluation.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:17] Adam: Not really a strategy or a re-evaluation, but having the kids on the trip this year, seven-year-old, five-year-old, and the wife too, was awesome to have them sharing the experience.
[0:53:19 – 0:53:19] Adam: A huge game changer.
[0:53:21 – 0:53:25] Adam: And pizza biters.
[0:53:26 – 0:53:26] Adam: Yes.
[0:53:26 – 0:53:31] Adam: You got probably three points for the pizza biters and two points for bringing the newbies out.
[0:53:32 – 0:53:33] Adam: We got a response.
[0:53:34 – 0:53:36] Adam: Three points for somebody asking, what is a pizza biter?
[0:53:37 – 0:53:37] Adam: Come on.
[0:53:39 – 0:53:45] Adam: All right, but Ghost of Ed Abbey has the response, which we’ll read in full.
[0:53:46 – 0:53:48] Adam: Totino’s pizza rolls are similar.
[0:53:49 – 0:53:50] Adam: That’s what the Tumble Home guys call them.
[0:53:51 – 0:53:52] Adam: We pan-fried them.
[0:53:52 – 0:53:57] Adam: Newer fire grates apparently have a tight enough grill to avoid falling through, but we didn’t try that.
[0:53:57 – 0:53:58] Adam: Well, you could have.
[0:53:58 – 0:53:59] Adam: They definitely do.
[0:53:59 – 0:54:01] Adam: You got to trust us on this one.
[0:54:01 – 0:54:06] Adam: The new grates, you can definitely just dump your bag of pizza biters right on there, so…
[0:54:07 – 0:54:09] Adam: Thanks for the response, Ghost of Ed Abbey.
[0:54:10 – 0:54:14] Adam: And great job getting the youngins out on the trail.
[0:54:15 – 0:54:18] Adam: And thank you for being part of hashtag PBNash.
[0:54:19 – 0:54:19] Erik: Yes.
[0:54:20 – 0:54:31] Adam: Yeah, living vicariously through newbies, especially if they’re your… How lucky are those kids and the wife also to have gone on their first Boundary Waters trip and to get pizza biters on their first trip?
[0:54:31 – 0:54:36] Adam: It took me decades of camping in the Boundary Waters to be able to have pizza biters on a trip.
[0:54:36 – 0:54:37] Erik: Yep.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:40] Adam: So I’m glad people are enjoying PBNash.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:41] Adam: It’s fun.
[0:54:41 – 0:54:42] Adam: Get on board, folks.
[0:54:42 – 0:54:44] Erik: Hashtag PBNash.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:44] Erik: Yes.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:47] Adam: Hashtag sizzle.
[0:54:48 – 0:54:51] Erik: Hashtag ironsquirrel2683.
[0:54:52 – 0:54:55] Erik: Definitely the Platypus gravity-fed water filter.
[0:54:56 – 0:54:58] Adam: Four votes for gravity filters.
[0:54:58 – 0:55:00] Erik: And my twig stove.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:02] Erik: Twig stove.
[0:55:02 – 0:55:03] Erik: Oh, I’ve heard about those.
[0:55:03 – 0:55:08] Erik: Twisty gear tie-downs are a must for securing fishing rods and loose equipment.
[0:55:08 – 0:55:08] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:09 – 0:55:11] Erik: Shout out bungee dealie bobs.
[0:55:20 – 0:55:24] Erik: Oh, still got some responses here.
[0:55:24 – 0:55:25] Erik: I’ll just do this one.
[0:55:25 – 0:55:30] Erik: This is one word, and then I’ll turn it over for Northbound underscore paddler for you.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:32] Erik: This is from Fat Tire Bike.
[0:55:32 – 0:55:35] Erik: One word, Prima Loft.
[0:55:37 – 0:55:38] Adam: What’s the Prima Loft?
[0:55:38 – 0:55:40] Adam: I think it’s the material in a sleeping bag.
[0:55:41 – 0:55:42] Adam: It’s like a synthetic.
[0:55:43 – 0:55:44] Erik: Air mat?
[0:55:44 – 0:55:46] Erik: No, it’s like synthetic material in sleeping bags.
[0:55:48 – 0:55:48] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:55:48 – 0:55:52] Erik: Or jackets or anything.
[0:55:52 – 0:55:53] Adam: Primaloft.
[0:55:53 – 0:55:53] Adam: Primaloft.
[0:55:54 – 0:55:54] Adam: Pillows.
[0:55:55 – 0:55:56] Adam: Modern down.
[0:55:56 – 0:55:57] Adam: Yes.
[0:55:59 – 0:56:02] Adam: Northbound underscore paddler.
[0:56:02 – 0:56:03] Adam: Three points.
[0:56:04 – 0:56:05] Adam: Two things.
[0:56:06 – 0:56:10] Adam: A collapsible camp sink and a 12×12 screened in tarp.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:17] Adam: One makes the worst camp chore more bearable, and the other makes the worst bug problems non-existent.
[0:56:20 – 0:56:20] Adam: Well said.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:21] Erik: Thank you.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:22] Erik: Nice.
[0:56:22 – 0:56:22] Adam: Very nice.
[0:56:23 – 0:56:29] Erik: I don’t travel enough in the buggy times of the year to have a full-blown, like, tent house.
[0:56:30 – 0:56:30] Erik: Yeah.
[0:56:30 – 0:56:39] Erik: Obviously, I bring out, like, the screen for the hammock, but I don’t have any kind of, like, daytime, like, hangout tent house screen area.
[0:56:39 – 0:56:41] Adam: I’ve only done that on, like, no portage trips.
[0:56:41 – 0:56:42] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:43] Adam: Just brulee.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:44] Adam: Basically, I’m brulee.
[0:56:44 – 0:56:44] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:45 – 0:56:46] Adam: Brulee.
[0:56:46 – 0:56:46] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:47 – 0:56:49] Adam: We have a response from MN4U.
[0:56:49 – 0:56:52] Adam: I’m still trying to understand the collapsible stuff.
[0:56:53 – 0:56:54] Adam: Yes, me too.
[0:56:55 – 0:56:58] Adam: You think it’s like this, it’s like your cup we had on the Grand Portage, right?
[0:56:58 – 0:57:02] Erik: Well, the collapsible sink is like, it only… Is it just a bigger version of your cup you had?
[0:57:02 – 0:57:10] Erik: No, it’s just, I mean, it’s basically just like a fabric, like, bucket, and it fills, like, when there’s water in it, it holds its shape.
[0:57:11 – 0:57:13] Adam: Yeah, okay, no, it’s like a tub.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:57:15 – 0:57:16] Adam: I see what you’re saying.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:57:17 – 0:57:17] Adam: Got it.
[0:57:19 – 0:57:22] Erik: Three points from Harry underscore Dream Team.
[0:57:23 – 0:57:23] Erik: Big picture.
[0:57:24 – 0:57:32] Erik: Getting on the water before the sun is up, coupled with single portaging, has allowed our group to get away from the crowds on day one.
[0:57:33 – 0:57:37] Erik: Yeah, those are all very big game-changing strategies there.
[0:57:37 – 0:57:37] Erik: Canoe.
[0:57:38 – 0:57:41] Erik: Pool noodles on the gunnels are a necessity for the bowmen.
[0:57:42 – 0:57:49] Erik: I personally like having a short piece of rope on the front to hold onto while portaging the 42-pound Kevlar’s.
[0:57:50 – 0:58:00] Erik: it’s also nice if you have that rope up there too just for if you’re at the landing and the if you have like a quick like um
[0:58:01 – 0:58:19] Erik: carabiner style clip on on the end of a rope you can just quick clip it onto like a tree so you don’t have to worry like you know how frustrating it is sometimes on those portages where you’re just like you set the canoe down for a second and even though it’s like dead calm it just somehow like starts drifting out into the lake and you’re like in the opposite direction yeah
[0:58:19 – 0:58:23] Erik: And all you want to do is you’re horsing a pack off the shore over to the canoe.
[0:58:23 – 0:58:23] Erik: I know.
[0:58:23 – 0:58:24] Erik: And it’s starting to drift away.
[0:58:24 – 0:58:28] Adam: Or somehow when you pull the pack out, it nudges the canoe off the rock just a smidge.
[0:58:29 – 0:58:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:58:30 – 0:58:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:58:30 – 0:58:34] Adam: That’s the anti-sage.
[0:58:34 – 0:58:35] Adam: Okay.
[0:58:35 – 0:58:36] Adam: It’s like an air sage.
[0:58:36 – 0:58:37] Erik: Yeah.
[0:58:37 – 0:58:41] Adam: It’s just like a- It’s a fickle and terrible thing.
[0:58:41 – 0:58:42] Erik: I hate wind.
[0:58:42 – 0:58:42] UNKNOWN: Okay.
[0:58:42 – 0:59:00] Erik: canoe ghost or something the guy was out just for a day this spring who i took out fishing had a little uh nice setup that he attached it was uh big d clips on both ends with like a bungee ish cord so you just clip it up onto the front of the canoe and then when you get
[0:59:00 – 0:59:11] Erik: Two, wherever you want to, if you’re portaging or if you’re just at camp or whatever, you wrap it around a tree and then take the big clip and loop it around the rope itself.
[0:59:11 – 0:59:21] Erik: And then we don’t have to worry about, I mean, it’s not like a long-term option, but it’s just one of those things where you can focus on getting paddles and gear and stuff organized without the canoe drifting away.
[0:59:21 – 0:59:23] Adam: Yeah, it’s happened to everyone.
[0:59:23 – 0:59:23] Erik: It has.
[0:59:24 – 0:59:25] Erik: Anyway.
[0:59:25 – 0:59:25] Adam: Squirrely boat.
[0:59:26 – 0:59:31] Erik: Fishing rods strapped to the underside of the support bars so they aren’t flopping around while portaging.
[0:59:32 – 0:59:32] Erik: Yes.
[0:59:33 – 0:59:36] Erik: Basketball net for an anchor and a brush clip.
[0:59:37 – 0:59:39] Erik: Yeah, the basketball net, I’ve seen a few of those.
[0:59:39 – 0:59:39] Erik: Those are nice.
[0:59:40 – 0:59:44] Adam: An old potato bag or something works pretty nice too.
[0:59:44 – 0:59:45] Erik: Fishing.
[0:59:45 – 0:59:45] Erik: Fishing.
[0:59:47 – 0:59:52] Erik: Depth slash fish finder, no bait casters, and extra eyelets.
[0:59:53 – 0:59:55] Adam: Yeah, you may want extra eyelets.
[0:59:56 – 0:59:57] Adam: I can vouch for that one.
[0:59:57 – 0:59:59] Adam: Yep.
[0:59:59 – 1:00:01] Erik: End up fishing with a two-footer.
[1:00:01 – 1:00:02] Erik: Oh, God, yeah.
[1:00:02 – 1:00:02] Erik: One eyelet.
[1:00:03 – 1:00:04] Erik: Tent slash sleeping.
[1:00:05 – 1:00:09] Erik: Spray down of Camp Dry is a must before every trip.
[1:00:11 – 1:00:39] Erik: tarp under tent with tarp edges folded under the tent climate sleeping bag and inflatable pillow earplugs are now a must depends on who you’re with I suppose I’m not a huge fan of the inflatable pillow I just feel like I’m like bobbing too much on that thing and I always just end up it always ends up just like sliding out from under my head I always just bring all my maps and my bag of wine and the hammock with me
[1:00:41 – 1:00:43] Erik: I think I mentioned it on the gear episode.
[1:00:43 – 1:00:49] Erik: What’s in the bag is the down vest is used for warmth and then folded up as a pillow.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:50] Adam: Works nice.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:53] Erik: Harry underscore dream team continues.
[1:00:53 – 1:00:54] Erik: Camp.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:56] Erik: Rain tarp along with a lightweight chair.
[1:00:57 – 1:00:58] Erik: Bow saw.
[1:00:58 – 1:00:59] Erik: Or silky.
[1:01:00 – 1:01:01] Erik: Silky boy.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:02] Erik: Was that the silky boy?
[1:01:02 – 1:01:02] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:02 – 1:01:03] Erik: Katana boy?
[1:01:03 – 1:01:04] Erik: Katana.
[1:01:04 – 1:01:04] Erik: Tree saw.
[1:01:05 – 1:01:07] Erik: And then food.
[1:01:07 – 1:01:08] Erik: Leather pot holder.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:09] Erik: Jet boil.
[1:01:09 – 1:01:11] Erik: Packets of country gravy.
[1:01:11 – 1:01:12] Erik: Hell yeah.
[1:01:12 – 1:01:13] Erik: Yes.
[1:01:13 – 1:01:14] Erik: Red chili sauce.
[1:01:14 – 1:01:15] Erik: I don’t know what that is.
[1:01:15 – 1:01:16] Erik: Tortillas.
[1:01:16 – 1:01:17] Erik: So versatile.
[1:01:18 – 1:01:18] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:18 – 1:01:22] Erik: You really, I mean, you can throw a pack of tortillas and just jam them in the corner of the pack.
[1:01:22 – 1:01:25] Adam: You have to be our first student in the adventure school.
[1:01:25 – 1:01:51] Adam: yeah tortillas uh you could make quesadillas with anything can you imagine a beaver with a silky katana boy i can’t they would have like a whole civilization set up at this point if they were just picturing jedi beavers at this point jedi beavers holding silky katana boys get to work on that nice robes yes oh yeah very sage it’ll be a tile and tumble on the board game with a jedi beaver
[1:01:54 – 1:01:57] Erik: And squeeze energy drink enhancer.
[1:01:57 – 1:01:59] Erik: All right.
[1:01:59 – 1:01:59] Erik: All right.
[1:02:00 – 1:02:01] Erik: Game changers.
[1:02:03 – 1:02:05] Adam: Game changers.
[1:02:06 – 1:02:12] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know how there was ever a thought in my mind that this wasn’t going to be two episodes.
[1:02:12 – 1:02:14] Erik: We’re still reading responses.
[1:02:14 – 1:02:14] Erik: This is great.
[1:02:14 – 1:02:15] Erik: How far are we doing?
[1:02:16 – 1:02:16] Erik: Right on the top.
[1:02:17 – 1:02:17] Adam: I gotcha.
[1:02:18 – 1:02:19] Adam: I just made this disc.
[1:02:20 – 1:02:20] Adam: Two points.
[1:02:21 – 1:02:22] Adam: What kind of disc?
[1:02:23 – 1:02:24] Adam: Costoplast?
[1:02:26 – 1:02:27] Adam: Hopefully so.
[1:02:28 – 1:02:28] Adam: Two points.
[1:02:28 – 1:02:29] Adam: One word.
[1:02:31 – 1:02:32] Adam: Gatorade powder.
[1:02:32 – 1:02:34] Adam: All right.
[1:02:34 – 1:02:35] Adam: That’s your game changer?
[1:02:35 – 1:02:36] Adam: I like the cut of your jib.
[1:02:39 – 1:02:39] Erik: One word.
[1:02:40 – 1:02:42] Erik: One word is actually two words.
[1:02:42 – 1:02:43] Erik: Gatorade powder.
[1:02:44 – 1:02:44] Adam: Powder.
[1:02:44 – 1:02:45] Erik: I can’t tell.
[1:02:45 – 1:02:47] Adam: I have power thinking about this.
[1:02:47 – 1:02:48] Erik: Gatorade powder.
[1:02:50 – 1:02:50] Erik: Read another one.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:52] Adam: Yeah.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:55] Adam: Yeah, I mean, powdered drinks are always nice.
[1:02:55 – 1:02:59] Adam: You know how I feel about obscure versions of Tang.
[1:03:01 – 1:03:04] Adam: Next up, TJS1987.
[1:03:04 – 1:03:05] Adam: Two points.
[1:03:05 – 1:03:06] Adam: Life straw.
[1:03:07 – 1:03:07] Adam: Water.
[1:03:08 – 1:03:08] Adam: Bottle.
[1:03:09 – 1:03:09] Adam: Drink at will.
[1:03:10 – 1:03:11] Adam: No pumping.
[1:03:12 – 1:03:13] Adam: No waiting.
[1:03:14 – 1:03:14] Erik: Nice.
[1:03:14 – 1:03:15] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:15 – 1:03:15] Erik: Yeah, good tempo.
[1:03:15 – 1:03:25] Erik: I’ve always thought, like, the LifeStraw, the ad or the picture that they produce for, like, you can just suck right out of a stream.
[1:03:25 – 1:03:26] Erik: It’s like, yeah, that looks dumb.
[1:03:26 – 1:03:31] Erik: Like, I wouldn’t want to be hunched over in the rocks right along, like, yeah, like, no, the…
[1:03:32 – 1:03:44] Erik: The way you should advertise that is you just take your water bottle, scoop it like a human, and then you can drink out of it with the straw, not down like in a puddle on your hands and knees like some kind of an animal.
[1:03:45 – 1:03:46] Adam: Yeah, I agree.
[1:03:46 – 1:03:47] Adam: I think that’d make more sense.
[1:03:47 – 1:03:49] Adam: I think that’s how you’re probably supposed to do it.
[1:03:50 – 1:03:57] Erik: Yeah, that’s like the equivalent of like instead of filling up your cup with a soda at the Burger King, you just suck right off of the fountain.
[1:03:57 – 1:03:57] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:58 – 1:04:00] Erik: No, you fill a cup and then use a straw.
[1:04:00 – 1:04:00] Erik: Whew.
[1:04:01 – 1:04:04] Erik: The people that produce the LifeStraw don’t understand that, though.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:08] Erik: But you could just suckle right off of the river if you wanted, I guess.
[1:04:09 – 1:04:09] Adam: You could.
[1:04:09 – 1:04:11] Adam: Well, that’s to each their own.
[1:04:11 – 1:04:12] Adam: You can do that if you want.
[1:04:12 – 1:04:12] Adam: Yeah.
[1:04:13 – 1:04:14] Adam: Thank you for the comment.
[1:04:15 – 1:04:16] Adam: We agree.
[1:04:16 – 1:04:18] Adam: We’re not making fun of the LifeStraw.
[1:04:18 – 1:04:19] Adam: No, I’m just making fun of the picture.
[1:04:19 – 1:04:20] Erik: We’re making fun of their marketing.
[1:04:20 – 1:04:22] Erik: Yes, the marketing for the LifeStraw is terrible.
[1:04:22 – 1:04:22] Adam: Yeah.
[1:04:23 – 1:04:27] Adam: Well, yeah, TJS said water bottle and you drink at will.
[1:04:28 – 1:04:28] Erik: Yes.
[1:04:28 – 1:04:29] Erik: They got it right.
[1:04:29 – 1:04:30] Erik: They know what’s got…
[1:04:30 – 1:04:32] Erik: They’re not down there at the lakeshore every time they want to get a drink.
[1:04:32 – 1:04:33] Erik: They’re not going down to the lake.
[1:04:33 – 1:04:39] Adam: We’re awarding you one extra point for… And you should also get an interview with Lifestraw’s marketing department.
[1:04:41 – 1:04:42] Erik: Show the bottle.
[1:04:42 – 1:04:43] Adam: Yeah.
[1:04:43 – 1:04:45] Adam: I’m going to read the next one.
[1:04:45 – 1:04:45] Adam: It’s kind of long.
[1:04:45 – 1:04:47] Adam: And then there’s two more it looks like to end.
[1:04:48 – 1:04:48] Adam: So I’ll read them.
[1:04:48 – 1:04:50] Adam: Those two were pretty short.
[1:04:50 – 1:04:51] Erik: Sounds like a plan.
[1:04:51 – 1:04:51] Erik: Yeah.
[1:04:52 – 1:04:55] Adam: I will read this next one, and then you can have the last two.
[1:04:55 – 1:04:56] Adam: I’m not reading ahead.
[1:04:59 – 1:04:59] Erik: Okay, good.
[1:04:59 – 1:05:00] Erik: As long as you’re not reading ahead.
[1:05:00 – 1:05:01] Erik: I’m just wetting the whistle.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:02] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:03 – 1:05:04] Adam: Somniferous dash.
[1:05:05 – 1:05:05] Adam: Two points.
[1:05:07 – 1:05:11] Adam: I’m sure I’m missing some things, but the top few things I can think of are… Thermosel.
[1:05:11 – 1:05:14] Adam: After a few years of using it, I’ve given up on being suspicious.
[1:05:15 – 1:05:19] Adam: It just seems to work to keep mosquitoes away, although I would still try to hide at dusk.
[1:05:20 – 1:05:21] Adam: I don’t know if anything can stop them.
[1:05:23 – 1:05:43] Adam: cadigan cadidin be free water filters especially if you bring it with a hydropack secret container which are more durable than the cadidin collapsible bottle they filter a lot of water and are small and light enough that you can fit them anywhere okay so more another that’s another vote for water systems
[1:05:44 – 1:05:45] Adam: There’s a clear trend.
[1:05:45 – 1:05:48] Adam: People like easy-to-use water systems.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:48] Erik: I think so.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:54] Adam: Three, an outdoorsman hunting pack or any heavy-duty western big-game hunting pack.
[1:05:54 – 1:06:02] Adam: The reason I love having one of these, even though they’re much heavier than your usual backpacking pack, is because they’re built out of material that is very strong.
[1:06:03 – 1:06:06] Adam: For this reason, I use mine while hiking throughout the day to collect firewood.
[1:06:07 – 1:06:11] Adam: I could load it with as much wood as I can carry, and the material would hold up.
[1:06:13 – 1:06:22] Adam: Obviously, this is more applicable to those doing the BWCA trails instead of paddling, but I would still take it paddling as well because of the dependability.
[1:06:22 – 1:06:22] Adam: Yeah.
[1:06:23 – 1:06:27] Adam: Something that’s very well made and that you can count on.
[1:06:27 – 1:06:28] Adam: It’s always satisfying.
[1:06:28 – 1:06:28] Adam: It is.
[1:06:29 – 1:06:30] Adam: It’s a very satisfying feeling.
[1:06:30 – 1:06:36] Adam: So if you have that pack in your life, then you are a very lucky paddler or hiker.
[1:06:36 – 1:06:37] Erik: What do you know?
[1:06:37 – 1:06:38] Erik: Printing, printing is last.
[1:06:39 – 1:06:40] Erik: But before we get to printing.
[1:06:40 – 1:06:42] Erik: Are you printing, printing?
[1:06:42 – 1:06:42] Erik: Printing, printing.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:44] Adam: What are you just swooping in one point?
[1:06:47 – 1:06:51] Erik: This is from Sandy’s Crafts.
[1:06:51 – 1:06:52] Erik: Two points.
[1:06:52 – 1:06:53] Erik: Two days ago.
[1:06:56 – 1:06:58] Adam: Why’d you have to say it like that?
[1:06:58 – 1:06:59] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:07:00 – 1:07:02] Adam: I think it was the hand motion more than the way you said it.
[1:07:03 – 1:07:04] Erik: Were you crafting?
[1:07:04 – 1:07:04] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:04 – 1:07:08] Adam: He’s virtual crafting folks here in Studio K. Thanks a lot.
[1:07:09 – 1:07:09] Erik: Sandy’s Crafts.
[1:07:11 – 1:07:13] Erik: Mozzie Nets or Mosquito Netting.
[1:07:16 – 1:07:18] Adam: Oh, Sandy, you got me cracking up over here.
[1:07:18 – 1:07:19] Erik: I’ll try and compose myself.
[1:07:19 – 1:07:26] Erik: Smoky fire just can’t hold back the monsters and having a place to retreat to during the evening hours is a place of bliss.
[1:07:27 – 1:07:31] Erik: Maybe I’m weird, but listening to the buzz behind safe netting is a wonderful thing.
[1:07:31 – 1:07:32] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:32 – 1:07:32] Adam: It is.
[1:07:32 – 1:07:37] Erik: It’s up there with the pitter patter of rain on the rain fly or the roof.
[1:07:38 – 1:07:40] Erik: There’s a satisfaction in knowing you are protected.
[1:07:41 – 1:07:41] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:42 – 1:07:42] Erik: I like that.
[1:07:42 – 1:07:43] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[1:07:45 – 1:07:46] Erik: I’m going to finish it up here.
[1:07:46 – 1:07:52] Erik: Let’s see how many of these questions of the week we can go with Printing Printing coming in last.
[1:07:52 – 1:07:55] Erik: The final word from Printing Printing.
[1:07:56 – 1:07:58] Erik: They’re getting their own segment.
[1:08:03 – 1:08:06] Erik: The final word with Printing Printing.
[1:08:06 – 1:08:07] Adam: Printing Printing.
[1:08:07 – 1:08:13] Erik: We had two game changers this season, the first being a 10×10 CCS tarp.
[1:08:14 – 1:08:15] Erik: Those things are magical.
[1:08:15 – 1:08:16] Erik: I have one of those.
[1:08:16 – 1:08:17] Erik: Yeah, I’ve got a few of my own.
[1:08:17 – 1:08:21] Erik: Things are still in impeccable shape.
[1:08:21 – 1:08:21] Erik: They’re great.
[1:08:21 – 1:08:24] Erik: Shout out Custom Sewing.
[1:08:25 – 1:08:28] Adam: Incredible tarps, locally made.
[1:08:29 – 1:08:32] Adam: Can’t believe they make those tarps and the best hockey skates.
[1:08:33 – 1:08:33] Erik: That’s CCM.
[1:08:34 – 1:08:34] Adam: Oh, I’m sorry.
[1:08:35 – 1:08:36] Adam: I was confused.
[1:08:36 – 1:08:39] Erik: And the second camp chairs, Helinox chair one.
[1:08:39 – 1:08:41] Erik: That’s three boats for camp chairs.
[1:08:41 – 1:08:41] Erik: And the knockoff one.
[1:08:42 – 1:08:43] Erik: Both great.
[1:08:43 – 1:08:48] Erik: It was nice spending the day in the rain at camp sitting under the tarp and not in the tent all cramped together.
[1:08:49 – 1:08:52] Erik: I am looking forward to learning many ways to set up the tarp.
[1:08:52 – 1:08:53] Erik: Any tips would be welcomed.
[1:08:55 – 1:09:17] Erik: uh i don’t have any tips uh straight away it’s super dependent on like what where you are yeah what the campsite’s like sometimes you gotta use rocks sometimes you can find a stump or like a route to go under yeah i think um if you ever get the chance if you’re at like midwest mountaineering or any of those canoe shows i know uh dan from custom sewing he’s the guy that
[1:09:18 – 1:09:18] Adam: Dan the man.
[1:09:18 – 1:09:20] Erik: Dan Cook makes all those.
[1:09:20 – 1:09:34] Erik: He will typically do a few different days or a few different times during the day a display slash kind of instructional display of how to set up the tarps, best strategies for that.
[1:09:35 – 1:09:40] Erik: I know the biggest thing is just don’t always assume that you need to go right down the middle with them.
[1:09:41 – 1:09:56] Erik: You can set them up in almost endless number of ways where you can set it off to a third where you draw a line between two trees and then have a third of it as a roof and then a steep drop.
[1:09:56 – 1:10:02] Erik: Biggest thing is knowing that you’re going to have to just go around and adjust after your first setup.
[1:10:02 – 1:10:09] Adam: That was going to be my point is don’t be afraid to go back and redo your tensions and knots and various points.
[1:10:10 – 1:10:10] Erik: Yes.
[1:10:10 – 1:10:11] Erik: And learn the trucker’s hitch.
[1:10:12 – 1:10:12] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:12 – 1:10:13] Adam: Eric’s really good at that one.
[1:10:13 – 1:10:15] Adam: I always have Eric do the trucker’s hitch.
[1:10:16 – 1:10:16] Adam: I don’t know that.
[1:10:16 – 1:10:22] Adam: I just end up tying like five box knots and then just applying some duct tape to it.
[1:10:22 – 1:10:23] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:23 – 1:10:25] Adam: If all else fails, just duct tape it.
[1:10:25 – 1:10:27] Adam: Stick a pine cone in there and it’s good to go.
[1:10:28 – 1:10:31] Erik: Well, you can, I’m sure, find a YouTube video somewhere on a trucker’s hitch.
[1:10:31 – 1:10:38] Erik: Essentially, it’s just an overhand knot loop halfway, or not halfway, but somewhere in between what you’re tying off to and the tree.
[1:10:38 – 1:10:41] Erik: And then you use that loop as tension.
[1:10:41 – 1:10:46] Erik: And then you just do a couple of other slip knots on that to adjust.
[1:10:46 – 1:10:48] Erik: And it’s very easy to adjust them.
[1:10:48 – 1:10:54] Erik: Once you get your four corners slash maybe your peak set up, then you can adjust a trucker’s hitch very easily.
[1:10:55 – 1:10:58] Erik: I am nodding, and I don’t know what he’s talking about.
[1:10:58 – 1:10:59] Erik: He’s nodding?
[1:10:59 – 1:10:59] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:10:59 – 1:11:03] Erik: He’s nodding about nodding.
[1:11:03 – 1:11:08] Adam: Okay, so in hindsight, going back, not in hindsight.
[1:11:08 – 1:11:09] Adam: Scratch that.
[1:11:09 – 1:11:10] Adam: You’re going to have to loon bleep that.
[1:11:10 – 1:11:11] Adam: Just make it seem like I cursed.
[1:11:13 – 1:11:18] Adam: Going back over the scorecard here, we have got, like, five votes for…
[1:11:19 – 1:11:23] Adam: I’m going to say, like, four of them were for sure for the Helinox chairs.
[1:11:23 – 1:11:24] Erik: There were definitely multiple camp chairs.
[1:11:24 – 1:11:28] Adam: But we have multiple, like, five or six votes for just lightweight camp chairs.
[1:11:28 – 1:11:30] Adam: I think that one wins.
[1:11:31 – 1:11:37] Adam: We had, like, five votes for gravity or just, like, high-tech water filtration systems, too, though.
[1:11:37 – 1:11:41] Adam: But not all of them were specifically for gravity unless the squeeze box or whatever…
[1:11:42 – 1:11:42] Adam: That was.
[1:11:43 – 1:11:43] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[1:11:43 – 1:11:44] Adam: What was it called again?
[1:11:44 – 1:11:45] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:11:45 – 1:11:46] Adam: It was halfway up the list there.
[1:11:46 – 1:11:47] Adam: Dang.
[1:11:47 – 1:11:50] Adam: Platypus Squeezebox 2.0.
[1:11:52 – 1:11:56] Adam: Either way, I think those were the two clear winners from digital Reddit.
[1:11:56 – 1:12:00] Adam: It was fancy camp chairs and water systems.
[1:12:01 – 1:12:04] Adam: Got to be comfortable, and you got to stay hydrated.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:15] Erik: Well, I mean, I’m really happy that we started with the listeners’ responses to this, but I think my main, my biggest game changer was not mentioned.
[1:12:15 – 1:12:17] Adam: Well, yeah, I had a few.
[1:12:17 – 1:12:19] Adam: I have like a very fluid list, so.
[1:12:19 – 1:12:20] Adam: Yes.
[1:12:20 – 1:12:23] Adam: I also give a big shout out to the extra long spoon.
[1:12:24 – 1:12:25] Adam: Yes.
[1:12:25 – 1:12:26] Adam: Hell yeah.
[1:12:26 – 1:12:26] Adam: Hell yeah.
[1:12:26 – 1:12:27] Adam: I think I’m going to get one.
[1:12:27 – 1:12:32] Adam: I have a big spatula, but I think I’m really missing is an extra long spoon.
[1:12:32 – 1:12:33] Adam: I have one for winemaking.
[1:12:34 – 1:12:38] Adam: You can maybe hear in the background a couple stone fruit wines bubbling away.
[1:12:39 – 1:12:43] Adam: Had one kind of over-ferment and blow a lid the other day.
[1:12:43 – 1:12:50] Adam: Made quite the mess, but you always need a long spoon for winemaking, and I think that applies to Boundary Waters Camping as well.
[1:12:50 – 1:12:57] Adam: Lastly, I’ll give a shout-out to our friend Putty, David Putty, with the shout-out for party lights.
[1:12:57 – 1:12:59] Adam: You’re getting a shout-out for your shout-out.
[1:12:59 – 1:12:59] Erik: Yes.
[1:13:00 – 1:13:01] Adam: That’s real meta.
[1:13:02 – 1:13:02] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:13:02 – 1:13:03] Adam: LED party lights.
[1:13:04 – 1:13:07] Adam: If you don’t have LED party lights, you’re just not doing it right.
[1:13:07 – 1:13:10] Adam: They literally cost you nothing, and they add so much.
[1:13:11 – 1:13:13] Adam: So that was definitely one of mine that got sniped.
[1:13:14 – 1:13:16] Adam: But shout out to Putty on that one.
[1:13:17 – 1:13:19] Adam: So, well, that was fun.
[1:13:20 – 1:13:22] Adam: We’re going to get into next week.
[1:13:23 – 1:13:24] Adam: What are our game changers?
[1:13:24 – 1:13:25] Erik: Yes.
[1:13:26 – 1:13:27] Adam: And…
[1:13:31 – 1:13:34] Adam: I got a couple, but I don’t know how to wrap this up, I guess.
[1:13:35 – 1:13:44] Erik: I don’t know if there’s too much to wrap up besides saying I am going to explode if I don’t get to the bathroom here in a second.
[1:13:44 – 1:13:44] Adam: All right.
[1:13:45 – 1:13:47] Adam: Well, let’s cue the chiptunes then.
[1:13:48 – 1:13:50] Erik: It’s been a while since we’ve actually had chiptunes.
[1:13:50 – 1:13:51] Erik: Can we do it?
[1:13:52 – 1:13:53] Erik: Yeah, sure.
[1:13:53 – 1:13:54] Erik: We can do chiptunes this week.
[1:13:54 – 1:13:55] Erik: I love chiptunes.
[1:13:55 – 1:13:55] Erik: Yeah.
[1:13:56 – 1:14:04] Erik: Problem is I have been working on the shows in places that I don’t have access to the internet where you can get all of the free stuff.
[1:14:04 – 1:14:11] Erik: So it’s all like previously downloaded free music stuff with maybe a borderline…
[1:14:13 – 1:14:19] Erik: summer rental soundtrack that I ended a show with maybe last week, two weeks ago.
[1:14:20 – 1:14:23] Erik: Probably get some copyright infringement email on that at some point.
[1:14:23 – 1:14:25] Adam: Yeah, nobody really cares.
[1:14:25 – 1:14:26] Erik: We’re not big enough at this point.
[1:14:26 – 1:14:28] Adam: Do I have to worry about that?
[1:14:28 – 1:14:29] Adam: I wouldn’t worry about it.
[1:14:31 – 1:14:33] Adam: Okay, well, thank you for listening.
[1:14:33 – 1:14:35] Adam: This has been Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast.
[1:14:35 – 1:14:38] Adam: Thank you to all our friends on RBWCA.
[1:14:39 – 1:14:40] Adam: You’re the best.
[1:14:40 – 1:14:43] Adam: Also, shout out to our friends on Patreon.
[1:14:44 – 1:14:48] Adam: Together, we are experts in this grand experiment in life and wilderness camping.
[1:14:49 – 1:14:51] Adam: We sure appreciate your support.
[1:14:51 – 1:14:53] Adam: and for you to listen every week.
[1:14:53 – 1:14:57] Adam: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules.
[1:14:57 – 1:14:58] Adam: I’m feeling a lot better.
[1:14:58 – 1:14:59] Adam: I hope you can tell.
[1:15:00 – 1:15:02] Adam: I’ve gotten those sniffles out of here.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:03] Adam: I said, go on and get sniffles.
[1:15:03 – 1:15:04] Adam: Eric’s feeling a lot better.
[1:15:05 – 1:15:05] Adam: I am.
[1:15:05 – 1:15:07] Adam: Both got a little bit of light back in our eyes.
[1:15:08 – 1:15:08] Adam: Twinkles.
[1:15:08 – 1:15:09] Erik: Yeah, our twinkle is back.
[1:15:09 – 1:15:12] Erik: Want to learn about our potential business plan?
[1:15:13 – 1:15:16] Erik: Become a patron, or if you are a patron, look forward to that.
[1:15:16 – 1:15:17] Erik: It is coming out this week.
[1:15:17 – 1:15:19] Adam: I’m excited to learn about this as well.
[1:15:19 – 1:15:23] Adam: Shout out to Todd for these fine beers and have fun down there in Black River Falls.
[1:15:23 – 1:15:25] Adam: Hope you get a musky this season.
[1:15:26 – 1:15:27] Adam: All right.
[1:15:27 – 1:15:29] Adam: We’re going to get on and go.
[1:15:30 – 1:15:31] Adam: Arrivederci, friends.
[1:15:32 – 1:15:33] Adam: Happy paddling.
[1:15:33 – 1:15:36] Adam: Every day is precious and life is a miracle.
[1:15:37 – 1:15:38] Adam: Hashtag PBNash.
[1:15:40 – 1:15:40] Adam: Good night.
[1:15:41 – 1:15:42] Adam: Auf Wiedersehen.
[1:15:42 – 1:15:43] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[1:15:43 – 1:15:44] Adam: Oui.
[1:15:45 – 1:15:45] Adam: Oui.
[1:15:47 – 1:15:48] Adam: Das ist gut.
