[0:00:01 – 0:00:06] AdamSnowLog: Nuwattan resumed playing, but by now he had grown tired of shooting at targets he could not hit.
[0:00:07 – 0:00:13] AdamSnowLog: He found a new sport in firing his arrow into the sky to see how high he could send the arrow and then watch it fall back to earth.
[0:00:14 – 0:00:20] AdamSnowLog: The last time he drew the arrow back to his ear and let it fly, he then watched it fall into a clump of bushes near the oak tree.
[0:00:21 – 0:00:26] AdamSnowLog: Nuwattan unstrung his bow and hung it by the entrance to the lodge, just as his father had told him to do.
[0:00:27 – 0:00:29] AdamSnowLog: Then he went in search of his arrow.
[0:00:30 – 0:00:31] AdamSnowLog: It was strange.
[0:00:31 – 0:00:35] AdamSnowLog: Nawatin could not find the arrow in the clump of bushes where he had seen it fall.
[0:00:36 – 0:00:44] AdamSnowLog: It was not until his father asked him how his marksmanship had gone that day that Nawatin made mention of his futile attempts and the loss of his arrow.
[0:00:45 – 0:00:50] AdamSnowLog: Pawagan consoled his son by telling him that marksmanship did not come in a day or several days.
[0:00:51 – 0:00:54] AdamSnowLog: As for the loss of the arrow, Pawagan was stern.
[0:00:55 – 0:00:57] AdamSnowLog: Hunters do not lose their equipment.
[0:00:57 – 0:01:00] AdamSnowLog: They look after their bows and arrows, he told his son.
[0:01:02 – 0:01:10] AdamSnowLog: Even though Nowatton eventually shot a squirrel the following day and was filled with a momentary sense of triumph, he soon grew tired of the sport.
[0:01:12 – 0:01:15] AdamSnowLog: Before he put away his bow and arrow, he fired one last time.
[0:01:15 – 0:01:21] AdamSnowLog: He watched his new arrow come down into the same clump of bushes where the other arrow had fallen the previous day.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:26] AdamSnowLog: To his astonishment, Nwantan saw a little boy standing by the bushes.
[0:01:26 – 0:01:30] AdamSnowLog: This little boy caught the arrow just as it fell to the ground and made off with it.
[0:01:31 – 0:01:36] AdamSnowLog: The strange little boy ran directly towards the great oak, into which he vanished.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:43] AdamSnowLog: The instant the little boy disappeared into the tree, Nwantan ran, shouting, My arrow!

[0:01:51 – 0:01:56] AdamSnowLog: Nowatton walked around it deliberately, looking at it from every angle and sounding it with his knuckle.
[0:01:58 – 0:02:01] AdamSnowLog: The tree was solid, yet Nowatton had seen the strange little boy enter it.
[0:02:03 – 0:02:11] AdamSnowLog: As far as Nowatton knew, the little boy was still somewhere in the tree and would answer if Nowatton, with the faith of a six-year-old, would only speak to him.
[0:02:13 – 0:02:14] AdamSnowLog: Give me back my arrow.
[0:02:15 – 0:02:17] AdamSnowLog: Father will be angry with me for losing my arrow.
[0:02:17 – 0:02:19] AdamSnowLog: I have nothing else to play with.
[0:02:19 – 0:02:21] AdamSnowLog: I need it so I can practice to be a hunter.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:23] AdamSnowLog: Why have you taken my arrow?
[0:02:24 – 0:02:30] AdamSnowLog: As Nwatin talked, the image of a boy’s face appeared on the trunk of the oak, like a reflection in a pool of water.
[0:02:31 – 0:02:34] AdamSnowLog: Nwatin continued, but he changed his plea.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:35] AdamSnowLog: Come out.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:36] AdamSnowLog: Come out and play.

[0:05:45 – 0:06:13] AdamSnowLog: there’s some fresh stuff on top again so it was really pretty there for a little bit brings us to 68 inches of total snow for the winter and yeah it was just idyllic out there trails were looking really nice almost just a lot of snow trying to snowshoe the the trails back in and and then yeah we hit that crazy wind
[0:06:15 – 0:06:26] AdamSnowLog: And we had four inches of snow this week, but I think we had a full inch of spruce tips and twigs on top of that.

[0:06:30 – 0:06:47] AdamSnowLog: uh… came down on top of that and budget i don’t know there’s no major trees down but uh… i was out today and it was definitely uh… bunch of like branches and trees tipped over and uh… just generally like must have been mayhem out in the woods uh…

[0:07:22 – 0:07:30] AdamSnowLog: And then a couple guys were going out lake trout fishing, and they dropped off some art supplies.

[0:07:38 – 0:07:41] AdamSnowLog: So it was always nice to talk to Tomohomis in the co-op.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:45] AdamSnowLog: And, you know, you don’t get a lot of actual visitors in the wintertime.

[0:07:53 – 0:07:59] AdamSnowLog: Well, yeah, you get some visitors in the summer, like, pretty regularly because there are a lot of people up here doing a canoe trip.

[0:08:17 – 0:08:30] AdamSnowLog: Um, but then, uh, in the mail this week too, at the co-op, I got a package and it was like a big, a big, like official looking envelope, like pretty sturdy looking envelope.

[0:08:35 – 0:08:40] AdamSnowLog: Yeah, I did open it right away because it was addressed to me, I think.

[0:08:45 – 0:08:48] AdamSnowLog: There’s a letter involved, which is to the both of us, so I’m going to read the letter.

[0:10:46 – 0:10:49] AdamSnowLog: We planned our first ever trip to the Boundary Waters.
[0:10:49 – 0:10:53] AdamSnowLog: On the way into the wild, we land at the airport, rent a car, drive to Duluth.
[0:10:54 – 0:10:57] AdamSnowLog: Leaving the wild, we took a minute and explored the city before heading home.
[0:10:58 – 0:11:01] AdamSnowLog: The last time I was in Minneapolis was for a family reunion at my aunt’s house.
[0:11:03 – 0:11:09] AdamSnowLog: It was my first time on an airplane, and I remember the plane turning and looking like it was going to land right in town.
[0:11:10 – 0:11:15] AdamSnowLog: On the way to the house, rain lit up, and the sun poked out, creating a double rainbow just over the river.
[0:11:15 – 0:11:17] AdamSnowLog: A very impactful memory.
[0:11:18 – 0:11:22] AdamSnowLog: Fifty years later, we were staying at the very posh Hewing Hotel, using the rooftop sauna.
[0:11:23 – 0:11:27] AdamSnowLog: After steaming off days of dirt, we went and browsed at Birchbark Books.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:33] AdamSnowLog: The neighborhood where we parked had ribbons around all the trees, remembering the terrible shooting a month earlier at the church.
[0:11:34 – 0:11:38] AdamSnowLog: This beautiful day, kids were all over riding bikes and walking dogs.
[0:11:39 – 0:11:46] AdamSnowLog: We walked along the river, not far enough to see the outdoor sculptures, but to make a dinner reservation at Owamni.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:48] AdamSnowLog: It’s a warm night.
[0:11:48 – 0:11:50] AdamSnowLog: Loads of people are walking around.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:54] AdamSnowLog: Back at the hotel, we head to the roof where Dessa has just finished a set.

[0:11:56 – 0:12:02] AdamSnowLog: I fangirled my way over and, with Dessa’s help, snapped a pic and sent it immediately to my daughters.

[0:12:07 – 0:12:11] AdamSnowLog: Everything seems vibrant and there’s a lot of positive and independent energy.

[0:12:18 – 0:12:22] AdamSnowLog: Like everyone, I felt so helpless and devastated when the invasion began.
[0:12:23 – 0:12:26] AdamSnowLog: Just so you know, no one here in our town thinks this is okay.

[0:12:28 – 0:12:33] AdamSnowLog: Trying to stop doom scrolling, but also wanting to make sure I can bear witness, even from afar.

[0:12:35 – 0:12:38] AdamSnowLog: Endless hours of stitching help me calm my mind and focus.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:45] AdamSnowLog: Initially I was only going to do four, two for my cousin and two for Lois’s good friends, but it morphed.

[0:12:48 – 0:12:53] AdamSnowLog: I tried to make a pattern that would take about two hours to stitch, but it turned out to be more like six hours.

[0:25:28 – 0:25:50] AdamSnowLog: um but yeah today was just sunny and it was like a mild breeze and it was like a high of nine or something i don’t know if it ever hit double digits today but it was like seven get out there and it’s like let’s go got the green wax out um and got all ready to go and hit the trails i’m like yeah the trails right by the house are looking really good

[0:25:56 – 0:26:08] AdamSnowLog: I thought somebody had gone through and broken that trail open, but we got to the spot, not quite up to the road crossing area, and nobody’s gone through there.

[0:26:13 – 0:26:16] AdamSnowLog: So yeah, we had a whole spectrum of different kind of trail out there.
[0:26:18 – 0:26:27] AdamSnowLog: Um, we had just really good looking, um, groomed by a snowmobile with a little fresh snow on top, pretty reasonably level, um, really good footing.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:29] AdamSnowLog: Yeah, really good trail.
[0:26:30 – 0:26:33] AdamSnowLog: And then all of a sudden you’re breaking trail and the dog is swimming.
[0:26:34 – 0:26:57] AdamSnowLog: um and you’re moving like you’re barely moving um huffing and puffing too like it was cold out but I mean I was that’s an uphill section of the trail too it’s all the sneaky uphill so I was really like going I was getting a workout in there and finally connecting back up get across the road and then there we’re just following like a snowshoe trail for a little bit
[0:26:58 – 0:27:18] AdamSnowLog: um just nobody on machine had gone through this this is like um i don’t know i mean it’s not a state trail or something but i mean it’s a pretty well used trail and just nobody’s gone through there somehow this week so yeah just following a snowshoe trail and then that connects into an actual dog sled trail somebody had run um
[0:27:20 – 0:27:21] AdamSnowLog: probably yesterday.
[0:27:22 – 0:27:24] AdamSnowLog: Somebody had ran a team through there.
[0:27:25 – 0:27:31] AdamSnowLog: And so then you’re on like, just following somebody’s like drag mat, which is pretty flat, but it’s not perfect.
[0:27:31 – 0:27:42] AdamSnowLog: And then, so you got like half of a groomed trail, half of a soft trail, which is just, you know, it’s hard to keep your feet steady in that.
[0:27:43 – 0:27:46] AdamSnowLog: You’re always like working and wobbling in that kind of a setup.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:49] AdamSnowLog: And then on top of that, it was just because it had gotten so cold,
[0:27:50 – 0:28:15] AdamSnowLog: um after the last snow came through and then it was just sort of just icy it was weird and then on top of all that as i mentioned earlier there’s just like an absurd amount of debris and so i had to stop a few times like full stop um just like heaving trees and branches off the trail as best i could there’s one spot where i just sort of had to push one over to the side and
[0:28:15 – 0:28:38] AdamSnowLog: Sneak around it and then there’s another one where we just had to like go off the trail and make our new trail Because I was not equipped, uh to clear that one um So, I don’t know I mean, I don’t know I don’t think I had any kick wax left on my skis by like By the time we got to the king pine probably like almost all my kick wax is just gone.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:44] AdamSnowLog: It’s icy poor footing that whole back section of that trail was kind of uh,
[0:28:45 – 0:29:06] AdamSnowLog: kind of just a work you’re just working and barely staying up but it did not fall arrow did great just steady pulling and made it all the way back around to then you’re on to kind of a major snowmobile route again this was groomed but it was also icy but you’re at that point you’re mostly going downhill so
[0:29:07 – 0:29:16] AdamSnowLog: That part was fun and that’s the cool part where you’re going through like a really neat maple stand and so it’s kind of open and there’s a lot less like debris in there because there’s a lot less spruce.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:22] AdamSnowLog: It’s really just spruce just like puke, they’re just puking twigs all over the place in the wind.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:27] AdamSnowLog: The other trees tend to hold up better, I think.
[0:29:27 – 0:29:34] AdamSnowLog: But yeah, when you’re getting to those thick areas of spruce, it was honestly like just a carpet of sticks.
[0:29:35 – 0:29:39] AdamSnowLog: So, you know, the skis were kind of all messed up from that.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:43] AdamSnowLog: Yeah, it was just odd.
[0:29:44 – 0:29:44] AdamSnowLog: So you got everything.
[0:29:45 – 0:29:46] AdamSnowLog: Got back across the road.
[0:29:47 – 0:29:51] AdamSnowLog: Then you’re back following the broken trail, but at least it’s like half broken open this time.
[0:29:52 – 0:30:15] AdamSnowLog: um yeah made it all the way back home though we did okay i did a similar loop no i did the exact same loop i don’t know a couple weeks ago we made it through there and i was boasting because it was really good trails on that run and we were averaging like six miles an hour moving speed
[0:30:16 – 0:30:31] AdamSnowLog: and then today I got back and I was like, wow, we were out there a lot longer, and I felt like we took less breaks because we were barely moving when we were moving, and so we were just sort of crawling our way around the loop.
[0:30:31 – 0:30:39] AdamSnowLog: Not a really satisfying ski jour, but still a beautiful day to be out there, and Arrow did great, of course, and she could care less what the trails were looking like.
[0:30:39 – 0:30:40] AdamSnowLog: She just wants to go.
[0:30:41 – 0:31:06] AdamSnowLog: and Goshi did got back though and I did check and we were hitting like 4.6 miles an hour on this run so significantly slower but still that’s like seven and three-quarter mile on that loop and then last week or whatever this week we had done just a shorter loop like almost three miles and
[0:31:08 – 0:31:11] AdamSnowLog: So yeah, we did like 10 and a half miles this week.
[0:31:13 – 0:31:17] AdamSnowLog: Yeah, I did take on that earlier, the little short one.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:28] AdamSnowLog: Those trails weren’t good either just because it was after the snow had come down and then the neighbor had run the snow machine through, but it was before we got the next three inches.
[0:31:29 – 0:31:31] AdamSnowLog: It was like in between the two storms.
[0:31:31 – 0:31:57] AdamSnowLog: and that was just like running on like packed snowmobile trail which is if they go out and back and they’re not they’re trying to like overlap them to like widen the trail you get some crazy ruts in that scenario plus there’s just like it’s the the ability to like speed check or like really um you know put a ski out sideways at all you’re just basically at the mercy of that trail and so we’re coming back onto the beaver pond

[0:32:01 – 0:32:07] AdamSnowLog: And I don’t know why, but when you get to the bottom of the hill, you hit the beaver pond and then the trail immediately veers hard right.
[0:32:09 – 0:32:12] AdamSnowLog: Um, and that’s just always where the trail has gone.
[0:32:12 – 0:32:18] AdamSnowLog: It’s the traditional beaver pond crossing trail and, uh, it’s not going to change and I’m not going to be the one to change it.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:20] AdamSnowLog: So you got to make that hard right turn.
[0:32:20 – 0:32:25] AdamSnowLog: But if you are cooking down the hill like that, it’s an icy terrain like that.
[0:32:25 – 0:32:28] AdamSnowLog: I pretty much, we got like halfway down the hill and I was just
[0:32:29 – 0:32:47] AdamSnowLog: like well i’m not going to make that turn i’m just going to have to go you know just go straight out into the deep snow on the pond and so that’s what we did now get the bottom of the hill arrow goes right uh follows the trail and i just like i just like go shooting off into this deep snow and
[0:32:47 – 0:32:50] AdamSnowLog: It felt like water skiing, actually, if anybody’s done that.
[0:32:50 – 0:33:01] AdamSnowLog: Yeah, you’re like all of a sudden just a feeling that you’re floating and losing speed as you go through the deep stuff and then eventually just like fell backwards into the side.
[0:33:01 – 0:33:05] AdamSnowLog: And Arrow’s just looking at me on the trail like, what the hell are you doing?
[0:33:06 – 0:33:07] AdamSnowLog: She just stopped.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:10] AdamSnowLog: And we’re attached by the bungee cord.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:12] AdamSnowLog: So at least I had that going for me.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:19] AdamSnowLog: And I put my hand down to push off and it just goes all the way down.

[0:34:03 – 0:34:10] AdamSnowLog: So I had to curl up and pop the skis off and then roll over and basically swim back to the trail.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:16] AdamSnowLog: So yeah, once you get off the pack stuff, it is really deep and gnarly out there.
[0:34:17 – 0:34:18] AdamSnowLog: So it is a lot of fun.
