[0:00:37 – 0:00:40] Erik: Mary Brombus and welcome, one and all.
[0:00:41 – 0:00:41] Erik: My name’s Eric.
[0:00:42 – 0:00:46] Erik: It is Saturday, February 22nd.
[0:00:47 – 0:00:55] Erik: It’s Tumble Home, and I’m joined, as always, by my fine partner and snowmobile master,
[0:00:57 – 0:00:58] Adam: Adam, hello.
[0:00:59 – 0:01:00] Adam: Vroom, vroom, Eric.
[0:01:00 – 0:01:01] Adam: Vroom, vroom.
[0:01:01 – 0:01:03] Adam: I’m hungry for the bramble boar.
[0:01:04 – 0:01:04] Adam: Yes.
[0:01:05 – 0:01:06] Adam: It’s a very good bramble boar.
[0:01:06 – 0:01:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:07 – 0:01:08] Adam: Can I have a bite of that bramble?
[0:01:09 – 0:01:11] Erik: Uh-oh.
[0:01:11 – 0:01:12] Erik: What are they doing now?
[0:01:12 – 0:01:13] Erik: Oh, God.
[0:01:14 – 0:01:19] Adam: What a beautiful day out there on the trails, as they say.
[0:01:19 – 0:01:20] Adam: Just shredding them.
[0:01:20 – 0:01:20] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:20 – 0:01:21] Adam: I don’t think they say that.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:22] Adam: Brapping.
[0:01:23 – 0:01:26] Adam: Oh, I was going a hearty 12 miles an hour all the way over here.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:27] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:28] Erik: Negative brapping.
[0:01:28 – 0:01:34] Adam: I don’t know what they call my style of riding an Articat, but it’s not brapping.
[0:01:34 – 0:01:34] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:36 – 0:01:39] Erik: It’s an anti-brap zone up here in the… Yeah, no way.
[0:01:39 – 0:01:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:41] Adam: Nice and easy.
[0:01:42 – 0:01:43] Erik: Nice and easy.
[0:01:43 – 0:01:44] Adam: Leisurely ride through the wood.
[0:01:45 – 0:01:46] Adam: It is nice out there.
[0:01:46 – 0:01:46] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:01:46 – 0:01:47] Erik: It is beautiful out there.
[0:01:47 – 0:01:47] Erik: The sun’s out.
[0:01:48 – 0:01:50] Erik: It’s not… My God.
[0:01:51 – 0:01:52] Adam: I put the bibs on, but I didn’t need to.
[0:01:52 – 0:01:53] Adam: I’ll tell you that much for free.
[0:01:53 – 0:01:55] Erik: Bit of a stretch of…
[0:01:56 – 0:01:58] Erik: It feels depressingly cold.
[0:01:58 – 0:02:02] Adam: That was one of the longer stretches of real cold.
[0:02:02 – 0:02:03] Adam: We had ice on the lake, for crying out loud.
[0:02:04 – 0:02:26] Erik: yeah though i walked on lake superior ice this week yesterday two days ago i was rolling into town and it was just like the night before it looked like you know yeah like superior does 360 days of the year yep and then i looked out there i was just like my god it was huge sheets of white ice yeah it was iced all the way out past five mile rock for sure
[0:02:26 – 0:02:29] Erik: And then that wind came up and it turned into like an insane like…
[0:02:29 – 0:02:39] Erik: I was like, I like looked out at Five Mile Rock and knowing that we had paddled out there, it was just like four foot rollers and it was all just like broken up ice.
[0:02:39 – 0:02:39] Erik: Ice rollers.
[0:02:40 – 0:02:42] Erik: My God, that just looks like the worst place to be ever.
[0:02:43 – 0:02:46] Erik: And Five Mile Rock is just like caked in ice.
[0:02:46 – 0:02:49] Erik: You wouldn’t survive a second out there right now.
[0:02:49 – 0:02:55] Adam: No, you would definitely slide off of that right into the lake trying to set a net in those conditions.
[0:02:55 – 0:02:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:02:56 – 0:02:56] Erik: Yeah.
[0:02:57 – 0:03:12] Erik: It’s sliding right off into what I’m feeling like is going to be a disappointing tease from the intro of the Tumbalone series that we’re doing.
[0:03:12 – 0:03:14] Erik: I don’t think we’re getting the guy sliding off the rock.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:15] Erik: I don’t think we are either.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:21] Erik: We’re well into Frozen Lake and that whole image is like very early on.
[0:03:21 – 0:03:23] Erik: It had to have happened already.
[0:03:23 – 0:03:24] Erik: Did we miss it?
[0:03:24 – 0:03:25] Erik: No.
[0:03:26 – 0:03:28] Erik: How do you include something like that in the intro?
[0:03:28 – 0:03:29] Adam: Maybe it was in the Colby show.
[0:03:30 – 0:03:31] Adam: Yeah, maybe we should.
[0:03:31 – 0:03:32] Adam: A lot of unaired footage in the Colby show.
[0:03:33 – 0:03:40] Erik: Yeah, they’re always very quick to tell you that this is previously unaired footage.
[0:03:40 – 0:03:41] Erik: Donaldson.
[0:03:42 – 0:03:43] Adam: You’ve been Donaldson.
[0:03:45 – 0:03:45] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:03:45 – 0:03:46] Adam: Yeah, I don’t think we’re going to see it.
[0:03:46 – 0:03:49] Adam: If it was going to happen, it would have happened in this episode.
[0:03:49 – 0:03:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:50 – 0:03:52] Adam: Nobody has slid into the lake yet.
[0:03:52 – 0:03:54] Erik: Yeah, I don’t really think it can happen.
[0:03:54 – 0:03:56] Erik: It’s full-blown white ice.
[0:03:56 – 0:03:58] Erik: That’s an open lake behind that person sliding in.
[0:03:59 – 0:04:02] Adam: Maybe the winter sticks around until the next year, and then that’s how they go out.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:27] Erik: yeah we didn’t have any of those contestants on this season of alone there there’s always one especially in the early days yeah one person who’s like i’m just gonna live here i’m never leaving i’ll be here till spring give me the money i’ll just bury it in the yard nobody ever they all leave yeah you’re gonna live i miss chocolate and burgers yeah i’m going back uh yeah so we’re talking to you uh episode nine this week the wolf
[0:04:28 – 0:04:28] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:04:29 – 0:04:35] Erik: The title, the names of their episodes are a little lackluster, I think.
[0:04:35 – 0:04:36] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:36] Erik: Amos.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:39] Erik: Amos, Kylan, I guess.
[0:04:39 – 0:04:40] Adam: It’s Kylan and Amos.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:43] Adam: I did end up seeing some of the Colby show this week.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:44] Adam: The Colby show.
[0:04:45 – 0:04:48] Adam: They introduced themselves, so then you know how you’re supposed to say it.
[0:04:49 – 0:04:51] Adam: We got it right finally after nine episodes.
[0:04:51 – 0:04:52] Adam: Fact check.
[0:04:53 – 0:04:54] Adam: On the fly.
[0:04:54 – 0:04:57] Adam: I have a programming note.
[0:04:58 – 0:05:05] Adam: I received a message from the person who, I guess, donated the Big Eddies last week.
[0:05:05 – 0:05:07] Adam: I was like, I guess I didn’t do it right, huh?
[0:05:07 – 0:05:08] Adam: It’s like, yeah, leave your name.
[0:05:08 – 0:05:11] Adam: So I left it with so-and-so at the co-op.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:12] Adam: And I’m like, well, they didn’t tell me that.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:17] Adam: You dropped it off while I was on paternity leave, and all I got was a ripped bag.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:19] Adam: Ryan Murray.
[0:05:19 – 0:05:20] Erik: Yes, I was going to say.
[0:05:20 – 0:05:23] Adam: Thank you, Ryan, for the Big Eddies.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:28] Adam: They did go down real nice on a cold, dark evening in February.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:54] Adam: and uh thank you for your support of tumble home and shout out to murray glassworks i guess that’s uh he’s making pipes now sure he’s got a mushroom business a pipe business uh he also it does nude modeling on the side wow yeah real costanza quite the figure you got to diversify your uh needs to work on his poems though you know could have used a poem with that bag of beer but thank you very much uh
[0:05:55 – 0:06:13] Adam: we are uh looking at the what was on the whiteboard is the white bag but as eric said it looks like um we’re about to get a present uh at an engagement party yeah it does look uh like a really elegant bag stapled shot with five staples yeah it’s a hard stapling job on the top of that thing
[0:06:13 – 0:06:14] Adam: What’s going to come out of here?
[0:06:15 – 0:06:16] Adam: Who knows?
[0:06:16 – 0:06:21] Adam: But it’s got my name on it, and this came into the co-op in October.
[0:06:21 – 0:06:27] Adam: This concludes, I believe, the October supplies.
[0:06:27 – 0:06:48] Erik: these were in the fridge looks like we got a nice i don’t know we got two different there’s a note signed by the brewmaster signed signed on the can by the brewmaster the note is stuck well these are like two opposite ends of the spectrum here when it comes to uh
[0:06:51 – 0:06:51] Adam: Oh, this is great.
[0:06:52 – 0:06:53] Adam: This is really great.
[0:06:53 – 0:06:59] Adam: Enjoy the sponsorships from Squirt Fruit and Joie de Poisson.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:01] Adam: Congratulations on the baby.
[0:07:01 – 0:07:02] SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
[0:07:02 – 0:07:05] Adam: Nice handwriting on loose-leaf paper.
[0:07:06 – 0:07:16] Adam: And I believe Jouer des Poissons did correctly identify the main gang of Thunder Bay being the Hell’s Angels.
[0:07:17 – 0:07:17] Adam: Oh, sure.
[0:07:17 – 0:07:20] Adam: And various First Nations syndicates.
[0:07:21 – 0:07:21] Adam: I’m not sure.
[0:07:21 – 0:07:23] Erik: Yeah, I’m sure there’s many syndicates up there.
[0:07:23 – 0:07:24] Adam: Yeah, the Hells Angels.
[0:07:24 – 0:07:25] Adam: Just go OG.
[0:07:25 – 0:07:27] Adam: Yeah, the Hells Angels, I guess.
[0:07:27 – 0:07:29] Adam: Still got a firm grip on Thunder Bay.
[0:07:29 – 0:07:32] Adam: What kind of dance do they do on the graves of their enemy?
[0:07:33 – 0:07:36] Adam: It probably involves chain link fencing.
[0:07:36 – 0:07:37] Erik: Yeah, I’m sure.
[0:07:37 – 0:07:39] Erik: The Canadian Hells Angels.
[0:07:41 – 0:07:47] Adam: And I believe Jouer Day has got the first comment on the question of the year thread that we were going to wrap up here.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:48] Erik: I thought it was Frere.
[0:07:48 – 0:07:53] Adam: Oh, maybe I got my French tumble homies all mixed up.
[0:07:53 – 0:07:54] Adam: My bad.
[0:07:55 – 0:07:58] Adam: I don’t know how to say my bad in French, but I would do it if I could.
[0:07:58 – 0:08:02] Adam: We got ourselves here a Mighty Eagle lager beer.
[0:08:03 – 0:08:06] Adam: This is very patriotic with an eagle on there.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:10] Adam: It’s from Blood Brothers Brewing in Toronto, Canada.
[0:08:11 – 0:08:11] Adam: What do you got?
[0:08:11 – 0:08:12] Adam: What are you holding there?
[0:08:12 – 0:08:14] Erik: It’s a Sawdust City Brewing Company.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:16] Erik: Twin Pines, West Coast style.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:18] Erik: This is extra strong.
[0:08:18 – 0:08:18] Erik: 8.8.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:20] Erik: Is that legal in Canada?
[0:08:20 – 0:08:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:27] Adam: As we found out on our trip to Toronto, yeah, Strong and Delicious IPAs now exist in Ontario.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:28] Adam: They do.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:32] Adam: So I hadn’t seen that one at the Longo’s.
[0:08:33 – 0:08:36] Adam: I guess we didn’t get our beer at the Longo’s.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:37] Erik: We could have.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:38] Erik: We could have.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:39] Adam: The Longo’s has everything.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:44] Erik: I mean, it’s just down, the LCBO is just upstairs.
[0:08:44 – 0:08:44] Erik: Go to there.
[0:08:44 – 0:08:45] Adam: Which one are you going for?
[0:08:45 – 0:08:46] Adam: Are you…
[0:08:46 – 0:09:07] Adam: i guess go big timer i’ll go big timer i’ll go mighty mighty eagle thank you for the thank you for your support of the show and uh for the information on the gangs of thunder bay i think it’s uh twin pines is that like uh in reference to something
[0:09:09 – 0:09:11] Erik: I’m surprised it doesn’t say on the back.
[0:09:11 – 0:09:19] Erik: Well, it says, if you like hops, and we know you do, you’re going to want to get reacquainted with Twin Pines IIPA.
[0:09:19 – 0:09:24] Erik: It’s a tribute to one of Sawdust City’s favorite sci-fi flicks.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:31] Erik: I don’t know what sci-fi flick is referencing Twin Pines.
[0:09:31 – 0:09:35] Erik: Am I missing out on something grievously obvious?
[0:09:36 – 0:09:40] Adam: You’re going to have to add it to the Tumble Home Cinema Classics list.
[0:09:40 – 0:09:41] Adam: I did…
[0:09:42 – 0:09:44] Erik: Twin Pines, is that just like sci-fi, though?
[0:09:44 – 0:09:47] Erik: I’m thinking that’s the name of the camp that Jason murders.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:49] Adam: I don’t think that’s right.
[0:09:49 – 0:09:50] Adam: That’s not sci-fi, either.
[0:09:51 – 0:09:53] Adam: Is it a Twin Peaks reference?
[0:09:53 – 0:09:54] Erik: I guess.
[0:09:54 – 0:09:55] Adam: There is a Twin Peaks movie.
[0:09:55 – 0:09:56] Adam: There’s a log on it.
[0:09:57 – 0:09:59] Adam: It is with pine cones.
[0:09:59 – 0:10:01] Erik: Log Lady’s not in Fire Walk With Me.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:02] Erik: She’s just in the show.
[0:10:06 – 0:10:07] Erik: I’m not sure.
[0:10:07 – 0:10:09] Erik: Tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:12] Adam: We did add a couple movies to the whiteboard.
[0:10:13 – 0:10:17] Adam: One of them was a 1981 Ringo Starr movie.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:18] Adam: We did this?
[0:10:18 – 0:10:21] Adam: It was recommended on the Discord to be added.
[0:10:23 – 0:10:27] Adam: I can go back and find it, but I should probably do that.
[0:10:28 – 0:10:31] Erik: Is it what, like Ringo goes camping?
[0:10:31 – 0:10:36] Adam: Yeah, I’m going to find the title for us here on the Discord.
[0:10:36 – 0:10:41] Adam: But the other one was somebody recommended we add Into the Wild.
[0:10:42 – 0:10:49] Adam: But the movie, which I don’t know if you’ve read the book, like Krakauer, Into the Wild, about Alexander Supertramp.
[0:10:50 – 0:10:51] Adam: I have, yes.
[0:10:51 – 0:10:52] Adam: I’ve seen the movie.
[0:10:52 – 0:10:55] Adam: Abandoned bus in the middle of Alaska.
[0:10:55 – 0:11:14] Erik: yeah i’ve seen the movie i read the book i was uh you’ve seen the movie i believe i’ve seen the movie too apparently sean penn and emile hirsch are problematic though uh what do you mean uh in real life yeah i guess they’re horrible i know sean penn is a very problematic i never really heard emile hirsch is he judd hirsch’s kid
[0:11:15 – 0:11:15] Adam: No idea.
[0:11:15 – 0:11:17] Adam: Yeah, we’ll say yeah.
[0:11:17 – 0:11:18] Erik: Okay.
[0:11:19 – 0:11:20] Adam: I just…
[0:11:33 – 0:11:38] Adam: it was just like a great conversation on like how that, that story still resonates with people.
[0:11:39 – 0:11:39] Erik: Yeah.
[0:11:39 – 0:11:44] Adam: Like most people, uh, the book, most people like admire him for following his dreams.
[0:11:44 – 0:11:47] Adam: But a lot of people, especially Alaskans, apparently they’re just like, what an idiot.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:49] Adam: Well, that’s very divisive.
[0:11:49 – 0:11:55] Erik: That’s the, I think that’s the whole point of why that book is worth reading.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:59] Erik: Is it, it leaves that up to you more or less.
[0:11:59 – 0:12:02] Adam: Uh, this was a, you’re wrong about podcast.
[0:12:02 – 0:12:03] Adam: Um,
[0:12:04 – 0:12:30] Adam: blair braverman and sarah what’s the host name it just says sarah but uh it was a hell of a conversation um it’s in the discord go ahead and find that one but uh not a huge fan of the movie i remember being well yeah i mean it would make for a good tumble home cinema classic film i would think i think i did add it to the where is this thing i did add it to the list though
[0:12:33 – 0:12:35] Adam: Happy People was mentioned as well.
[0:12:37 – 0:12:38] Adam: And it’s still on the board, though.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:45] Adam: I thought Brother Andrew had recommended Happy People, and then somehow we just hadn’t got to it for five years, so we just erased it.
[0:12:46 – 0:12:49] Erik: That’s probably what happened, if I were to guess, yeah.
[0:12:50 – 0:12:52] Adam: The Ringo Starr movie is 1981 Caveman.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:56] Adam: There’s a picture of Ringo.
[0:12:56 – 0:12:58] Adam: I don’t know what that is that’s attacking him.
[0:12:58 – 0:12:58] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:12:58 – 0:13:02] Adam: Ringo Starr and Shelley Long, Hopalicious says, what’s not to like?
[0:13:02 – 0:13:03] Erik: Shelley Long?
[0:13:03 – 0:13:04] Adam: I said it looks like a gem.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:07] Adam: I went right to the shed and added it to the list.
[0:13:07 – 0:13:11] Adam: We do have a lot of titles still in the Tumulam Cinema Classics whiteboard out in the shed.
[0:13:12 – 0:13:13] Adam: The shed has not been abandoned.
[0:13:13 – 0:13:15] Adam: It’s just too cold for recording this winter.
[0:13:16 – 0:13:38] Erik: but they’re up there so after we finish alone we’ll have to you know dive back into the whiteboard and pick a few more titles for the rest of winter yeah shelly long of uh night shift fame where they uh uh henry winkler and michael keaton turn a morgue into a uh place uh uh for prostitutes to uh
[0:13:40 – 0:13:47] Erik: literally using the caskets, the cooling drawers as like, uh, that’s where you, you know, turn your trick.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:50] Erik: It’s a comedy, early eighties comedy.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:50] Erik: Come on.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:51] Adam: Sounds like it.
[0:13:52 – 0:13:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:52 – 0:13:53] Adam: God, this one, it just won.
[0:13:54 – 0:13:57] Adam: Oh, it’s Sarah Marshall is the host of you’re wrong about.
[0:13:58 – 0:14:03] Adam: And, yeah, they basically, it’s one of those where one tells the story and the other kind of reacts.
[0:14:03 – 0:14:04] Adam: It was a great conversation.
[0:14:05 – 0:14:06] Adam: I listened to that last night.
[0:14:06 – 0:14:12] Adam: I ended up listening to episode 83, the first Pronto Pup episode.
[0:14:14 – 0:14:16] Adam: Yeah, I stayed up pretty late last night, Eric.
[0:14:16 – 0:14:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:16 – 0:14:18] Adam: It was a wild Friday night.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:19] Erik: It’s February.
[0:14:20 – 0:14:22] Erik: We got only a few more days.
[0:14:22 – 0:14:30] Erik: Next week, this time, we will officially be into March and we can all forget that this horrible, horrible month ever happened.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:32] Adam: Yeah, the February guy.
[0:14:34 – 0:14:35] Adam: February guy.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:36] Adam: Everybody’s itchy.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:37] Adam: It’s true.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:39] Adam: I’ve been incredibly itchy.
[0:14:39 – 0:14:41] Erik: Carbohydrates are popular this time of year.
[0:14:41 – 0:14:45] Adam: I’ve seen so many people getting paper cuts in the last week.
[0:14:46 – 0:14:48] Adam: People’s skin is just turning to dust.
[0:14:48 – 0:14:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:49 – 0:14:49] Adam: It’s horrible.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:54] Adam: I do have a bird of the week and one more announcement if we have time.
[0:14:55 – 0:14:56] SPEAKER_01: We’re not doing too bad.
[0:14:56 – 0:14:56] SPEAKER_01: If we have time.
[0:14:57 – 0:14:58] Adam: We always have time.
[0:14:58 – 0:14:58] Adam: We’re out of time.
[0:14:58 – 0:14:59] Adam: Come home.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:03] Adam: Trevor has given up trying to wrangle us to get to the meet.
[0:15:04 – 0:15:06] Adam: I have a programming note.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:12] Adam: Phasmata, the Phasmata form, I spelled form P-H-O-R-M. Oh, nice.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:15] Adam: Is live on the Discord.
[0:15:15 – 0:15:16] Erik: What is that for?
[0:15:16 – 0:15:20] Adam: If you’re interested in getting on to Tumble Home Live 25 in September…
[0:15:21 – 0:15:27] Adam: Fosmata form should be filled out for logistical planning purposes just to get all our, you know, gordies in a row.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:28] Erik: Is there a deadline?
[0:15:29 – 0:15:33] Adam: Not really, but the sooner you get in, you lock your place in if you fill out the Fosmata form.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:41] Adam: So when you are sure, when you’ve finagled the other trip into place, then you can go fill out your form, Eric, and join us.
[0:15:41 – 0:16:02] Adam: join us there won’t be any rangers out there so i guess we can all just camp at one campsite and we’ll just be the police sure we’re gonna it’s gonna be like lonesome dove out there and uh your call and i’m old gus and we’re gonna go around wrangling up the other campers um because uh well i don’t go around here no more bud
[0:16:03 – 0:16:05] Erik: Yeah, let’s just put, well, I mean.
[0:16:05 – 0:16:08] Adam: We’ll just become park rangers.
[0:16:08 – 0:16:09] Adam: Not Texas rangers, though.
[0:16:09 – 0:16:10] Adam: We’re park rangers.
[0:16:11 – 0:16:13] Adam: And we ain’t herding cattle, if you know what I mean, bud.
[0:16:13 – 0:16:14] Erik: I know exactly what you mean.
[0:16:14 – 0:16:15] Erik: I know it.
[0:16:15 – 0:16:19] Erik: When’s the last time policing yourselves has not worked out?
[0:16:20 – 0:16:22] Adam: It’s going to be mayhem out there this summer.
[0:16:23 – 0:16:29] Adam: There’s apparently nobody working at the Gunfoot and Ranger Station currently, and don’t expect they’re going to be hiring anybody.
[0:16:29 – 0:16:31] Adam: So I don’t know how that’s all going to work, but…
[0:16:33 – 0:16:33] Adam: Take care out there.
[0:16:34 – 0:16:34] Erik: Yeah, take care.
[0:16:35 – 0:16:37] Adam: Please wood gnome respectfully.
[0:16:39 – 0:16:41] Adam: I did see, I got a bird of the week, and then I’ll seed the floor.
[0:16:42 – 0:16:43] Adam: Seed the floor.
[0:16:43 – 0:16:48] Adam: I got another owl, but it’s not a great gray and not a snowy.
[0:16:48 – 0:16:50] Adam: I got a boreal owl.
[0:16:50 – 0:16:50] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:16:51 – 0:16:52] Adam: Which is apparently super rare.
[0:16:52 – 0:16:53] Adam: Super rare.
[0:16:53 – 0:16:59] Adam: And I’ve been told by serious birders that I’m not allowed to count this one, possibly even though I have video footage of it.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:07] Adam: which I did post onto the discord and it’s, it’s a chunky medium sized owl is what Merlin describes it as.
[0:17:08 – 0:17:08] Adam: Why can’t you count it?
[0:17:09 – 0:17:09] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:17:10 – 0:17:12] Adam: It’s not good enough video.
[0:17:12 – 0:17:12] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:17:13 – 0:17:14] Adam: I don’t know my birds enough.
[0:17:14 – 0:17:14] Adam: Like,
[0:17:15 – 0:17:16] Erik: Not blistering HD.
[0:17:16 – 0:17:20] Adam: I have very loose standards for my personal life list, so I’m definitely adding it on there.
[0:17:20 – 0:17:21] Adam: There’s nothing else it could be.
[0:17:22 – 0:17:25] Adam: First, I thought maybe a northern hawk owl, but it didn’t have a long tail.
[0:17:26 – 0:17:28] Adam: It’s just squatty looking, so go check it out.
[0:17:28 – 0:17:29] Adam: I have a video posted on the Discord.
[0:17:30 – 0:17:31] Adam: Let me know if I’m wrong.
[0:17:31 – 0:17:32] Adam: Is it not a boreal owl?
[0:17:33 – 0:17:40] Erik: It sounds like people have been saying that you’re not wrong, but that the quality is not good enough to claim that it is.
[0:17:40 – 0:17:43] Adam: It flew right in front of my truck with a good amount of light left in the sky.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:48] Adam: I slammed on the brakes, rolled down the window, immediately got my phone on it, and I got one picture.
[0:17:48 – 0:17:56] Adam: And then I got a little three-second video, and it flew out of the tree and landed in another tree very, very close.
[0:17:56 – 0:17:58] Adam: No, I think it’s pretty good video.
[0:17:58 – 0:18:01] Adam: I just think the person I was trying to bounce it off of really takes birding seriously.
[0:18:02 – 0:18:02] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[0:18:02 – 0:18:04] Adam: And it’s like, if you’re not a hundred percent sure, you’re not sure.
[0:18:05 – 0:18:09] Adam: So even though I’m 99% sure, you know, I’ll just leave it with that.
[0:18:09 – 0:18:11] Adam: I’m 99% sure I saw a boreal.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:16] Adam: It was really cute and odd looking like to see it’s like a little teddy bear flying through the sky.
[0:18:17 – 0:18:18] Erik: Little flying Ewok.
[0:18:18 – 0:18:21] Adam: Yeah, it’s too stubby and chunky and fat.
[0:18:22 – 0:18:23] Erik: What makes it rare?
[0:18:23 – 0:18:26] Adam: It’s just it’s not usually down in this neck of the woods.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:27] Adam: Well, I mean, that’s…
[0:18:28 – 0:18:29] Adam: Same reason the great greys are around.
[0:18:30 – 0:18:31] Erik: Lack of shrew.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:32] Adam: Lack of shrew.
[0:18:32 – 0:18:35] Erik: Well, it would make sense that you would have a higher light.
[0:18:35 – 0:18:42] Erik: It’d be an entirely different scenario if it was just like any other winter where nobody was seeing owls and you were like, oh, I saw a boreal owl.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:43] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
[0:18:43 – 0:18:43] SPEAKER_01: Sure you did.
[0:18:43 – 0:18:44] SPEAKER_01: All the owls are down there right now.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:45] Adam: No, other people are seeing…
[0:18:46 – 0:19:11] Adam: boreal owls too but i’ve never seen one and yeah my parents are pretty serious birders and they’re like we’ve never seen one that’s super lucky so i don’t know i feel i’m blessed you must be wrong i’m bird blessed bird blessed yeah so that’s your bird of the week that’s very nice yeah it’s been a good week it’s been a good week it’s been a hell of a week eric yeah sure has real hockey’s back on
[0:19:12 – 0:19:15] Adam: Yeah, you’re still sticking by that you don’t like the Four Nations?
[0:19:15 – 0:19:15] Adam: Well, it’s over.
[0:19:16 – 0:19:17] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:17 – 0:19:18] Adam: I was just listening to that episode, though.
[0:19:18 – 0:19:20] Adam: You’re really coming down hard on the Four Nations.
[0:19:20 – 0:19:21] Erik: I got a little heated.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:24] Adam: You still feel that way?
[0:19:24 – 0:19:26] Adam: I thought it was some incredible hockey.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:26] Erik: No, I don’t.
[0:19:27 – 0:19:34] Erik: I mean, I don’t think I have any real change in my base opinion on how excited can you get about something that’s just been made up.
[0:19:35 – 0:20:02] Adam: yeah it’s not a gold medal it’s all kind of made in the olympics but i mean that was the the players seem to be taking it very seriously and it resulted in some pretty fine hockey and there’s some fun games to watch there um i don’t know just the talent on the ice was it uh it was evident yeah well it just makes me game if anything it makes me more excited for when they let all countries be involved next winter i saw the like the
[0:20:02 – 0:20:23] Erik: the table the proposed tables so it’s like that’s next February yeah I’ll be I’ll be in on that it’s gonna be pretty cool for sure it’s like well you know we do have like Iceland’s not in 30 other players who are arguably like best in the world but they’re not in they’re not involved we’re not gonna involve them
[0:20:24 – 0:20:30] Erik: You are the best of the four countries we deemed eligible for this tournament.
[0:20:30 – 0:20:31] Erik: Out of what?
[0:20:31 – 0:20:32] Adam: Nowhere?
[0:20:32 – 0:20:37] Adam: Those are the four countries that had the most players in the NHL, and the idea was to feature NHL players.
[0:20:37 – 0:20:39] Erik: No, I mean, yeah, I get it.
[0:20:40 – 0:20:46] Adam: Logistically, you can pull it off in one week, whereas the Olympics, I think the NHL is off for like three weeks for the Olympics.
[0:20:47 – 0:20:49] Erik: Well, yeah, I guess that’s the one thing.
[0:20:49 – 0:20:51] Adam: So you get time working against it.
[0:20:51 – 0:20:56] Erik: Yeah, with only four teams, it does allow you to get it in in like 10 days versus the Olympics, which is like, yeah, you got to have.
[0:20:56 – 0:20:59] Adam: Did you have anybody seriously injured for fantasy?
[0:20:59 – 0:21:02] Adam: Because there’s like numerous horrible injuries.
[0:21:02 – 0:21:03] Adam: What happened to Charlie McAvoy?
[0:21:03 – 0:21:05] Erik: Shay Theodore, I lost, yeah.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:06] Adam: Oh, you had Shay, yeah.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:07] Erik: That’s a bummer.
[0:21:08 – 0:21:11] Adam: I had a couple guys that were dinged up, but I guess they’re going to be okay.
[0:21:12 – 0:21:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:12 – 0:21:16] Erik: Also, another reason that the whole thing is stupid, just give them 10 days off.
[0:21:16 – 0:21:16] Adam: I don’t care.
[0:21:16 – 0:21:17] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:21:17 – 0:21:18] Adam: It was pretty cool.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:24] Erik: Or you got injured trying to win a trophy that’s been around for five months.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:25] Adam: Prestigious.
[0:21:26 – 0:21:27] Adam: Be a different story.
[0:21:27 – 0:21:30] Adam: Can either of us name the name of the trophy for the Four Nations Cup?
[0:21:30 – 0:21:33] Erik: I blew out my knee trying to get a gold medal at the Olympics.
[0:21:33 – 0:21:33] Erik: Okay.
[0:21:34 – 0:21:35] Erik: That makes sense.
[0:21:35 – 0:21:36] Adam: It’s made with real meniscus.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:21:38 – 0:21:40] Adam: And gold-plated meniscus.
[0:21:40 – 0:21:41] Erik: Where did they even…
[0:21:41 – 0:21:43] Erik: I don’t even know where it was being played.
[0:21:43 – 0:21:47] Adam: Montreal and then the last couple games were in Boston.
[0:21:47 – 0:21:47] Adam: Okay.
[0:21:47 – 0:21:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:21:48 – 0:21:50] Erik: It’s a real world event.
[0:21:51 – 0:21:52] Adam: Yeah, big time.
[0:21:52 – 0:21:53] Adam: Yeah, big time.
[0:21:53 – 0:21:55] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:21:55 – 0:21:56] Adam: It was great.
[0:21:57 – 0:21:58] Adam: We’re getting back into hockey.
[0:21:58 – 0:22:02] Adam: The homestretch for the Fantasy League is here, so buckle up, buckaroos.
[0:22:02 – 0:22:05] Adam: Trade deadline’s Wednesday, if you’re hearing this on Sunday.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:09] Adam: Matt, go ahead and send me that trade offer back.
[0:22:09 – 0:22:10] Adam: You coward.
[0:22:10 – 0:22:11] Adam: You coward.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:12] Adam: He doesn’t listen to the podcast.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:12] Adam: No, he doesn’t.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:16] Adam: He’s only here for the community and for the hockey.
[0:22:16 – 0:22:32] Erik: that’s it just discord chat he’s just a discord humble he’s the first ever only discord only tumble home yeah he sure i mean unless this comes out and other people uh announce themselves as being discord only discord only i never listened to the podcast what
[0:22:33 – 0:23:01] Erik: uh you know it’s still yeah it’s a good discord to be on sure yeah that’s i could see it that’s when you do feel like it skews a little bit more towards a meme group than not a community if you don’t listen to the podcast there’s like 150 people on the discord now 150 plus i just looked yesterday it’s really gaining in popularity and it’s an active group too so yeah i’m on i feel like i’ve been on there even more lately
[0:23:01 – 0:23:02] Adam: Yeah, it’s the middle of winter.
[0:23:02 – 0:23:04] Adam: It’s a good time to be on the Discord for sure.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:06] Adam: I got nothing else left in my life.
[0:23:07 – 0:23:08] SPEAKER_03: Grill me.
[0:23:08 – 0:23:09] Adam: Grill me.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:10] Adam: Shut up.
[0:23:10 – 0:23:12] SPEAKER_01: Don’t open the lid.
[0:23:12 – 0:23:13] SPEAKER_01: Don’t let me out.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:13] SPEAKER_01: Don’t let me out.
[0:23:15 – 0:23:16] Adam: It must be done.
[0:23:16 – 0:23:17] Adam: It must be done.
[0:23:17 – 0:23:18] Adam: It must be done.
[0:23:20 – 0:23:21] Erik: We got to finish this up.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:22] Adam: Are you going to be a fit on this grill?
[0:23:23 – 0:23:24] Adam: How dare you?
[0:23:24 – 0:23:29] Adam: You’re not man enough to grill me.
[0:23:31 – 0:23:31] Adam: All right.
[0:23:31 – 0:23:32] Erik: We’re going to finish it up.
[0:23:32 – 0:23:33] Erik: We have to finish it up.
[0:23:33 – 0:23:34] Adam: We’re definitely finishing it up.
[0:23:34 – 0:23:37] Erik: I don’t know what we’re going to do after we finish it, but we’re going to do it.
[0:23:37 – 0:23:38] Erik: It’s going to happen today.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:39] Erik: Then we’re going to talk about kindling.
[0:23:39 – 0:23:43] Erik: And then you’re all going to have to wait and find out what we move on to next.
[0:23:44 – 0:23:46] Adam: It’s the bear grease next week, Eric.
[0:23:46 – 0:23:47] Erik: Yeah, that’s true.
[0:23:47 – 0:23:48] Adam: It’s a big timer.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:48] Adam: It’s here.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:53] Adam: After this is over, we’re going to do nothing but listen to Marie Champagne and talk about dogs for a month.
[0:23:54 – 0:23:56] Erik: Yeah, we did look, we went on Discogs.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:59] Erik: Maurice Champagne was never pressed onto vinyl.
[0:23:59 – 0:24:00] Erik: It’s a real shame.
[0:24:01 – 0:24:03] Erik: It’s too much of a deep cut for Discogs.
[0:24:03 – 0:24:08] Erik: If anybody out there has the Maurice Champagne Sled Doggies, what’s the name of the album?
[0:24:09 – 0:24:10] Erik: Shoe Dog and Friends.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:11] Erik: Shoe Dog and Friends.
[0:24:11 – 0:24:12] Adam: Yeah.
[0:24:12 – 0:24:15] Adam: If anybody’s got it on vinyl, I’ll grill a live human to get that.
[0:24:16 – 0:24:16] Adam: Let’s do it.
[0:24:17 – 0:24:17] Adam: What?
[0:24:18 – 0:24:19] Adam: Let’s take it easy.
[0:24:19 – 0:24:21] Adam: I’m just… No, I wouldn’t do it.
[0:24:21 – 0:24:23] Erik: You’ll shut the lid for me?
[0:24:23 – 0:24:27] Adam: I would commit heinous crimes to get my hands on that album if it’s available.
[0:24:28 – 0:24:30] SPEAKER_03: What have you done to my daddy?
[0:24:32 – 0:24:38] Adam: He had the only copy of Maurice Champagne’s Shoe Dog and Friends on premium vinyl.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:40] Erik: If only he would have cleaned out that grease trap.
[0:24:40 – 0:24:43] Adam: With original artwork signed by Maurice himself.
[0:24:43 – 0:24:45] Adam: Came out in 2016.
[0:24:47 – 0:24:48] Adam: It’s a rare gem right there.
[0:24:48 – 0:24:50] Erik: Epic collector’s edition.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:52] Erik: What color is the vinyl?
[0:24:54 – 0:24:55] Erik: We’re starting with Friere.
[0:24:56 – 0:24:57] Erik: Jacuzzi.
[0:24:57 – 0:24:58] Erik: Dear friend of the show.
[0:25:00 – 0:25:01] Erik: Picking up where we left off, I hope.
[0:25:02 – 0:25:03] Erik: I do hope.
[0:25:04 – 0:25:09] Erik: I was fortunate enough to get into the park six times this year, plus once in Voyagers.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:12] Erik: 20 nights, all told.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:16] Erik: I got to introduce the BWCA to a girlfriend and friend.
[0:25:18 – 0:25:24] Erik: I visited the Vento for the first time, battled two-foot waves on Pine with a bowman in a busted seat.
[0:25:26 – 0:25:26] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:25:27 – 0:25:27] Adam: Sounds about right.
[0:25:27 – 0:25:29] Adam: Hopefully you find a bungee cord on the next portage.
[0:25:30 – 0:25:30] Erik: Yeah, hopefully.
[0:25:31 – 0:25:37] Erik: I watched a hell of a thunderstorm come in from a distance at the site perched over Indian Sioux North.
[0:25:38 – 0:25:43] Erik: I endured some awful mid-June mazis, but was rewarded with pink lady slippers on horse.
[0:25:43 – 0:25:48] Erik: The Picto’s on crooked and an Arctic woodpecker feeding its chicks on basswood.
[0:25:48 – 0:25:48] Erik: What?
[0:25:49 – 0:25:51] Erik: My, an Arctic woodpecker.
[0:25:51 – 0:25:53] Erik: I might have to do a little research on what that looks like.
[0:25:53 – 0:25:55] Adam: Basswood’s its own ecosystem up there.
[0:25:56 – 0:25:56] Adam: Yeah.
[0:25:56 – 0:25:58] Adam: They got mythical trees and woodpeckers.
[0:25:58 – 0:25:58] Adam: Yeah.
[0:25:58 – 0:26:01] Erik: Endemic woodpeckers only found on basswood.
[0:26:02 – 0:26:03] Erik: I climbed the windchill.
[0:26:03 – 0:26:05] Adam: The only nest in a basswood tree, Eric.
[0:26:05 – 0:26:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:06 – 0:26:13] Erik: I climbed the windchill overlook at sunset and paddled on to camp in the dark of a new moon with shooting stars overhead.
[0:26:14 – 0:26:15] Erik: Dang.
[0:26:15 – 0:26:16] Erik: Sounds like…
[0:26:16 – 0:26:17] Erik: I can picture it now.
[0:26:17 – 0:26:18] Erik: I saw…
[0:26:19 – 0:26:27] Erik: Those incredible October northern lights on Long Island passed through the Vesperian Hills on a brilliantly sunny afternoon of peak fall colors.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:29] Erik: This guy’s just rattling off hits here.
[0:26:30 – 0:26:33] Erik: I had a moose encounter of a lifetime in the far west of the park.
[0:26:33 – 0:26:37] Erik: A month later, saw a pack of four otters catching fish and playing in the same spot.
[0:26:38 – 0:26:43] Erik: And in April, watched a fisher hunt a snowshoe hare on the Kawishui River.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:43] Erik: You’ve been right.
[0:26:44 – 0:26:53] Erik: One thing I always say about wilderness, can’t predict what you’ll encounter, but if you keep going out, you’ll encounter great things.
[0:26:53 – 0:26:56] Adam: Wow, that is a great saying, as you always say.
[0:26:56 – 0:27:01] Erik: Yeah, here’s to a year of that and another to come for us all.
[0:27:01 – 0:27:04] Adam: Is that quote going to be the longest episode title ever?
[0:27:04 – 0:27:04] Adam: Yeah.
[0:27:05 – 0:27:09] Erik: You can’t predict what you’ll encounter, but if you keep going out, you’ll encounter great things.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:09] Adam: Yeah.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:10] Adam: Episode 280.
[0:27:10 – 0:27:15] Adam: Yeah, that’s going to be the new longest episode usurping the weird moose episodes from the fall.
[0:27:15 – 0:27:16] Adam: Oh, yes.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:17] Adam: The radio head titles?
[0:27:17 – 0:27:19] Adam: Yeah, it’s a full story of a headline.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:25] Erik: Yeah, I’ll just copy and paste the third paragraph from Frere Jacuzzi.
[0:27:25 – 0:27:25] Erik: Thank you.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:27] Erik: That was very well written.
[0:27:27 – 0:27:29] Erik: Sounds, yeah, geesh.
[0:27:29 – 0:27:30] Erik: Magical.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:33] Erik: Sounds like some burnt-in memories there.
[0:27:34 – 0:27:35] Erik: Insane wildlife encounters.
[0:27:35 – 0:27:36] Erik: Jeez.
[0:27:36 – 0:27:38] Erik: That’s a nice hunk of gouda.
[0:27:38 – 0:27:39] Erik: That’s a nice hunk of gouda.
[0:27:39 – 0:27:40] Adam: That’s how I always say.
[0:27:41 – 0:27:44] Adam: As I always say, that’s a real nice hunk of gouda.
[0:27:44 – 0:27:48] Erik: Heard it here first many years ago, and he’s still saying it to this day.
[0:27:49 – 0:27:51] Adam: Go back and listen to the old tapes.
[0:27:51 – 0:27:51] Adam: It’s in there.
[0:27:52 – 0:27:53] Adam: It’s all in there.
[0:27:53 – 0:27:58] Adam: Next up on the show, dear friend of the show, Gobi in my pants.
[0:27:59 – 0:28:01] Adam: Two months ago with 10 boxes of wine.
[0:28:02 – 0:28:03] SPEAKER_01: Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:28:04 – 0:28:05] Adam: Let me have a sip of this mighty eagle.
[0:28:05 – 0:28:06] Adam: This is a long one, Eric.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:07] Erik: Yeah, it is.
[0:28:08 – 0:28:09] Erik: Got your work cut out for you there.
[0:28:10 – 0:28:13] Adam: These are real question of the year quality responses here.
[0:28:13 – 0:28:13] Adam: These are…
[0:28:15 – 0:28:17] Erik: Fretting over every word you can tell.
[0:28:18 – 0:28:19] Adam: Every word matters.
[0:28:19 – 0:28:26] Adam: Every sentence flows into the next with the precision of a mighty eagle flying through the sky.
[0:28:26 – 0:28:30] Adam: This year, I made it back to the Boundary Waters after a four-year hiatus.
[0:28:31 – 0:28:34] Adam: My trip companions were my dad, wife, and eldest son.
[0:28:34 – 0:28:40] Adam: I wanted to give them an easy trip, especially for my dad and son, since long physical days wouldn’t work for them.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:42] Adam: For myself, I wanted to see new water.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:48] Adam: The answer for this was a Liz permit down to Horseshoe or Vista, depending on how we felt once we hit Horseshoe.
[0:28:49 – 0:28:53] Adam: So, in late July, my parents flew in from South Carolina.
[0:28:53 – 0:28:58] Adam: My mom would watch our youngest while everyone else drove north for a five-day trip in the wilderness.
[0:28:59 – 0:29:04] Adam: Before driving up, I picked up some art supplies and apparently put the wrong date of my trip on it.
[0:29:04 – 0:29:09] Adam: Oops, my typos continue even when I handwrite them, lol.
[0:29:10 – 0:29:18] Adam: We stopped by the co-op and got breakfast for the next day and then headed up to Rockwood Outfitters after dinner at Poplar House and some outstanding birria quesadilla.
[0:29:19 – 0:29:20] Adam: Did I say that right, Eric?
[0:29:20 – 0:29:21] Adam: Yeah.
[0:29:21 – 0:29:21] Adam: Birria.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:22] Erik: Yeah, you nailed it.
[0:29:23 – 0:29:25] Erik: You’re really good at rolling your R’s.
[0:29:25 – 0:29:28] Adam: Yeah, you got the wrong guy for this one.
[0:29:30 – 0:29:32] Adam: We went back to Rockwood and got settled.
[0:29:33 – 0:29:35] Adam: Early the next morning, we hit the water and headed south.
[0:29:35 – 0:29:40] Adam: The very first portage had me extremely concerned about my dad’s ability for this little trip.
[0:29:40 – 0:29:47] Adam: He had our lightest pack, maybe 20-pound stops, and was stopping every 20 feet on a 70-ish rod portage that was essentially flat.
[0:29:47 – 0:29:51] Adam: I ended up quadruple portaging that one just to get things moving.
[0:29:52 – 0:29:54] Adam: Our pace so far was embarrassingly slow.
[0:29:54 – 0:29:57] Adam: One thing we noticed was that every group coming out was wearing hats.
[0:29:57 – 0:30:25] Adam: headnets oh the bugs must be bad they’re all wearing headnets that’s not a good sign on caribou the wind picked up a little and i soon realized i couldn’t steer the canoe if my younger bowman didn’t paddle thankfully he dug in and paddled hard when we had uh round a point and head for horseshoe we got to that lake at least at noon and quickly found an open site across the lake across the lake from the a plus site on the middle portion of the lake
[0:30:25 – 0:30:33] Adam: My wife thought this was just our spot for night one and was pleasantly surprised when she learned we would be base camping instead of always moving like her first trip.
[0:30:33 – 0:30:34] Erik: Pleasantly surprised.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:34] Adam: That’s nice.
[0:30:36 – 0:30:47] Adam: The five days on the lake brought us good fishing, cool wet weather, a snapping turtle stealing walleye off our stringer, an eagle roosting in camp, and a lot of mosquitoes.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:49] Adam: Eureka Bug House for the win there.
[0:30:50 – 0:30:55] Adam: One of the more memorable parts of the trip was two young rangers who dug a new latrine for us.
[0:30:55 – 0:30:56] Erik: Wow, while you were there?
[0:30:57 – 0:30:58] Erik: What service.
[0:30:58 – 0:30:59] Erik: Don’t expect that in the future.
[0:30:59 – 0:31:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:01] Adam: Did you peek?
[0:31:03 – 0:31:03] Erik: Just a quick peek.
[0:31:04 – 0:31:05] Erik: Yeah, she’s bone dry.
[0:31:05 – 0:31:06] Adam: That’s more like inspection.
[0:31:06 – 0:31:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:31:08 – 0:31:15] Adam: These two college-aged girls dug what can only be described as a cavernous hole for the brown volcano in just a few short hours.
[0:31:16 – 0:31:18] Adam: I gave them some packaroons as thank you.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:22] Adam: Our whole group promptly christened the volcano as soon as they left.
[0:31:23 – 0:31:24] Erik: Let’s all line up and fill it.
[0:31:26 – 0:31:28] Adam: You all sit there like rubbing your tummies.
[0:31:29 – 0:31:30] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:31:31 – 0:31:32] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:31:32 – 0:31:33] Adam: I’m ready.
[0:31:37 – 0:32:00] Adam: uh i can’t say i’ve ever experienced something like that in the park that’s great yeah it just manifests the need to go once you get a nice clean pit like that especially when it was just freshly dug yeah oh yeah strange enough though at the bottom of the pit they did dig up a uh a portrait of dick cheney oh he actually lives in the bottom of all pits yeah
[0:32:00 – 0:32:03] Erik: That’s when you know you can stop digging is when you get to the Chaney.
[0:32:03 – 0:32:05] Erik: When you reach Chaney level.
[0:32:06 – 0:32:07] Adam: Yeah, we’re down in the good clay.
[0:32:07 – 0:32:08] Adam: Yes.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:09] Adam: We’re going to go ahead and stop.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:11] Adam: This is the good stuff.
[0:32:11 – 0:32:12] Adam: They went out.
[0:32:13 – 0:32:18] Adam: The way out went quickly, but resulted in a broken paddle when an older gentleman fell, putting a…
[0:32:19 – 0:32:45] Adam: putting on a pack and landing on our gear off to the side oh no no it sounds like a horrible like awkward situation where it’s another person falls into your crap in your group jeez i mean those portages can be crowded at the landings for sure that’s a corridor right there yeah my bb special was leaned up against a small spruce but it took a direct hit and the paddle broke on the blade thankfully we only had to get a crest poplar and it managed to still properly propel me
[0:32:46 – 0:32:50] Adam: Everyone had a great time, and best of all, my six-year-old wants to go back again.
[0:32:51 – 0:32:55] Adam: The wife wants to go again, too, so more plans are being made.
[0:32:56 – 0:32:58] Adam: Thank you for the wonderful story.
[0:32:59 – 0:33:02] Adam: I’m awarding you an extra box of wine on behalf of Eric’s account.
[0:33:03 – 0:33:04] Adam: He’s got a six-day streak going.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:05] Adam: This guy upvotes.
[0:33:06 – 0:33:07] Erik: End of story.
[0:33:07 – 0:33:08] Adam: End of story.
[0:33:09 – 0:33:10] Adam: That’s pretty good.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:12] Adam: I’m glad you managed to get all the way down to Horseshoe.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:16] Adam: And honestly, yeah, you made the right call to stay in there and base camping.
[0:33:17 – 0:33:20] Adam: Vista’s a fine lake, but Horseshoe, it’s got everything you need.
[0:33:21 – 0:33:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:22 – 0:33:23] Adam: That’s their slogan.
[0:33:23 – 0:33:24] Adam: They’ve been saying it forever.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:25] Adam: A horseshoe.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:26] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:32] Adam: Can you just picture an outline of a horseshoe with little feet and just walking down a porch?
[0:33:32 – 0:33:33] SPEAKER_01: It’s just like, I’m a horseshoe.
[0:33:33 – 0:33:35] SPEAKER_01: I got everything you need.
[0:33:35 – 0:33:36] SPEAKER_01: I can picture it.
[0:33:37 – 0:33:39] Adam: It tips its little hat at you and it’s got like a bandana.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:43] Adam: Horseshoe would never fall on your paddle and break your BB special.
[0:33:43 – 0:33:43] Adam: No.
[0:33:43 – 0:33:46] Adam: Horseshoe’s got strong footing.
[0:33:46 – 0:33:46] Adam: Good boots.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:47] Adam: Good boots.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:48] Adam: That’s right.
[0:33:51 – 0:33:53] SPEAKER_01: Howdy, I’m Horseshoe.
[0:33:53 – 0:33:55] SPEAKER_01: I got everything you need.
[0:33:55 – 0:33:57] SPEAKER_01: Just stop right here, friend.
[0:33:57 – 0:34:01] Erik: Sounds a little too close to the Pillsbury Doughboy.
[0:34:02 – 0:34:02] Adam: It is.
[0:34:03 – 0:34:07] Adam: Maybe the Pillsbury Doughboy is up to more than we even could imagine, Eric.
[0:34:07 – 0:34:10] Erik: I think he’s still up here somewhere.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:13] Erik: Making an appearance.
[0:34:14 – 0:34:15] Adam: There’s an eagle reference.
[0:34:16 – 0:34:16] Adam: Oh, no.
[0:34:17 – 0:34:19] SPEAKER_01: Stop on my horseshoe.
[0:34:20 – 0:34:21] SPEAKER_01: You can’t trust me.
[0:34:21 – 0:34:22] SPEAKER_01: I’m a rascal.
[0:34:24 – 0:34:25] SPEAKER_01: Never do trust me.
[0:34:27 – 0:34:29] SPEAKER_01: Don’t turn your back on me.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:29] SPEAKER_01: I’m horseshoe.
[0:34:30 – 0:34:32] Erik: I don’t know what’s going on right now.
[0:34:32 – 0:34:33] Erik: Horseshoe, take it easy.
[0:34:33 – 0:34:35] Erik: Tables have turned dramatically.
[0:34:35 – 0:34:36] Erik: I don’t like this at all.
[0:34:37 – 0:34:38] Erik: You can’t trust me.
[0:34:39 – 0:34:40] Erik: I’m horseshoe.
[0:34:41 – 0:34:43] Erik: I got everything you need.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:43] Adam: Grill me.
[0:34:44 – 0:34:44] Adam: Don’t.
[0:34:46 – 0:34:47] Adam: Jesus Christ, horseshoe.
[0:34:47 – 0:34:48] Adam: You don’t have the guts.
[0:34:48 – 0:34:50] Erik: Whatever you do, don’t turn me upside down.
[0:34:50 – 0:34:52] Erik: All your luck will fall out.
[0:34:52 – 0:34:54] Erik: One supermarket.
[0:34:54 – 0:34:56] Erik: 7-2-2-1, I believe.
[0:34:57 – 0:34:58] Erik: First time.
[0:34:59 – 0:34:59] Erik: Welcome.
[0:35:00 – 0:35:01] Erik: One supermarket.
[0:35:03 – 0:35:06] Erik: Hello from Southern Indiana.
[0:35:06 – 0:35:07] Erik: God’s country.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:13] Erik: My brother, cousin, friend, and myself, mid-30s, went to the BWCA in mid-September.
[0:35:14 – 0:35:15] Erik: Mid-30s, mid-September.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:18] Erik: We went to the Ely side for the first time.
[0:35:19 – 0:35:20] Erik: Sorry, no art supplies.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:22] Erik: Camped at Canoe Country.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:24] Erik: Four heading out.
[0:35:25 – 0:35:26] Erik: Camped at Knife the first night.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:28] Erik: Then went to…
[0:35:28 – 0:35:30] Erik: They went to Wissini for two nights.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:30] Adam: All right.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:31] Adam: Looking good.
[0:35:31 – 0:35:31] Adam: Feeling good.
[0:35:31 – 0:35:32] Erik: Sorry.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:33] Erik: Night two.
[0:35:34 – 0:35:38] Erik: Then we stayed two days on Ashigan.
[0:35:39 – 0:35:39] Erik: Oh, yes.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:41] Erik: How appropriate.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:42] Erik: You can’t trust us.
[0:35:42 – 0:35:45] Erik: The most trustful lake opposite of Horseshoe.
[0:35:46 – 0:35:47] Erik: We’re paddling back out.
[0:35:47 – 0:35:51] Erik: Few highlights and comical things that go into a guy’s trip.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:51] Erik: One.
[0:35:52 – 0:36:02] Erik: My cousin laid his fishing pole down on day one in the canoe, and within five minutes of fishing, his pole got snagged and plopped off the side of the boat.
[0:36:04 – 0:36:05] Erik: We looked at each other in shock.
[0:36:06 – 0:36:08] Erik: Then we were cackling like schoolgirls.
[0:36:09 – 0:36:10] Erik: Yeah, that’s what schoolgirls do.
[0:36:11 – 0:36:12] Erik: At what we witnessed.
[0:36:12 – 0:36:14] Erik: Those old cackling schoolgirls.
[0:36:15 – 0:36:19] Erik: He naively thought we’d find it the next morning on knife, but after an hour and a half, he gave up.
[0:36:20 – 0:36:22] Erik: Turns out it was like 30 feet of water, not 10.
[0:36:23 – 0:36:24] Erik: The wind was pretty strong.
[0:36:24 – 0:36:25] Adam: That’s a tough snag.
[0:36:25 – 0:36:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:26 – 0:36:34] Erik: Two, we didn’t get as far as we wanted on day two of the trip, so stopped at the four-star site on Wissini.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:38] Erik: It is a bitch to get your stuff up that cliff, but it is an amazing site.
[0:36:39 – 0:36:40] Erik: Yeah, I can picture that site.
[0:36:40 – 0:36:45] Erik: It is like a terrorist cliff situation.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:46] Erik: You gonna vouch for it?
[0:36:47 – 0:36:47] Erik: I’ll vouch for it.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:48] Erik: He’s vouching for it.
[0:36:48 – 0:36:49] Erik: I vouch for it.
[0:36:49 – 0:36:50] Erik: You got my vouch.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:51] Erik: Stamp it.
[0:36:51 – 0:36:51] Erik: Three.
[0:36:52 – 0:36:54] Erik: We were trying to make it to Jordan on day three.
[0:36:54 – 0:36:58] Erik: After being pretty gassed when we got there, we found all sites taken.
[0:36:58 – 0:37:05] Erik: Demoralizing realization that we had three more portages to the next campsite was tough, but we persevered.
[0:37:05 – 0:37:07] Erik: Did you see the pictos, though?
[0:37:07 – 0:37:08] Erik: No comment on that yet.
[0:37:09 – 0:37:11] Erik: Got to the south side of Ashigan for two days.
[0:37:12 – 0:37:13] Erik: Ashigan.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:14] Erik: Always trustful.
[0:37:14 – 0:37:15] Adam: Always welcoming.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:16] Adam: The good times.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:17] Adam: You can trust them.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:18] Adam: You can trust them.
[0:37:18 – 0:37:19] Adam: There’s a campsite, I’m guessing.
[0:37:19 – 0:37:19] Erik: Always.
[0:37:20 – 0:37:20] Adam: They got it.
[0:37:20 – 0:37:21] Erik: Four.
[0:37:21 – 0:37:24] Erik: Paddled all the way back to canoe country on the last day through Ensign.
[0:37:24 – 0:37:30] Erik: And on the last two miles in the middle of Moose, my six-foot-six cousin, his paddle broke.
[0:37:31 – 0:37:32] Adam: What’s going on today?
[0:37:33 – 0:37:33] Erik: Just in the hands.
[0:37:34 – 0:37:35] Erik: Just a little bending.
[0:37:35 – 0:37:36] Erik: Two…
[0:37:37 – 0:37:38] Erik: Too many horsepowers.
[0:37:38 – 0:37:40] Erik: Ease up, cousin.
[0:37:40 – 0:37:41] Adam: Ease up there, big cousin.
[0:37:41 – 0:37:42] Adam: Take it easy.
[0:37:43 – 0:37:44] Adam: Take it easy there, big Gouda.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:47] Adam: Too much muscle.
[0:37:48 – 0:37:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:37:48 – 0:37:49] Adam: Not enough finesse.
[0:37:49 – 0:37:55] Erik: There was a pretty strong headwind, so him hunched over paddling with just the end of the paddle was hilarious.
[0:37:56 – 0:37:57] Erik: That is pretty hilarious.
[0:37:57 – 0:37:58] Adam: Keep with it.
[0:37:58 – 0:37:59] Adam: Yeah, just keep digging.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:00] Erik: Oh.
[0:38:01 – 0:38:04] Erik: We made it, but Bruce at Canoe Country wasn’t too happy that it was broke.
[0:38:05 – 0:38:09] Erik: Ah, canoe outfitters should be pretty used to broken paddles at this point.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:13] Adam: Yeah, you give a guy a 6’6″, a paddle, you expect it’s coming back snapped in half.
[0:38:13 – 0:38:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:14 – 0:38:18] Erik: Duluth Interstate was closed for a rollerblading race?
[0:38:18 – 0:38:20] Erik: Question mark, question mark, question mark.
[0:38:20 – 0:38:21] Erik: WTF, Duluth?
[0:38:22 – 0:38:22] Adam: What?
[0:38:23 – 0:38:24] Adam: Yeah, I guess.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:24] Adam: That’s just thrown in there.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:26] Adam: Is that a new category in the marathon?
[0:38:27 – 0:38:55] Erik: rollerblading yes i actually am aware of this a guy i worked with at the the trout last summer went and did that rollerblading um i like that event because the shorts are real short yeah you’re not allowed to have any shorts that are like longer than two inches basically the grandma’s marathon route just a rollerblade yeah that’s a good category they’re broadening there it’s like the rollerblade it’s the berkey binder of rollerblades i didn’t realize that they would have shut down the interstate though
[0:38:56 – 0:39:01] Adam: That’s got the best, yeah, can you imagine getting a blade down 35 through the tunnels?
[0:39:02 – 0:39:03] Erik: Through the tunnels would be sweet.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:15] Erik: And six, one dedicated beer barrel to wine, whiskey, nicotine, and green vices that aren’t legal in Indiana got some quizzical looks from canoe country, but was worth it.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:18] Erik: Canoe country has seen that before, I’m sure.
[0:39:18 – 0:39:21] Adam: They’re not scoffing at your barrel of sin.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:27] Erik: I remember there was full-blown, like, number four packs of sin that I used to send out on the water with people.
[0:39:28 – 0:39:29] SPEAKER_01: One, I remember one group.
[0:39:29 – 0:39:29] Erik: None of my business.
[0:39:30 – 0:39:40] Erik: That used to come up from Wisconsin, and it was an entire Duluth pack just filled with plastic 1.75 squirt tops of, like, all the boozes.
[0:39:40 – 0:39:41] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:41] Erik: Just.
[0:39:42 – 0:39:42] Erik: It’s the bar barrel.
[0:39:43 – 0:39:43] SPEAKER_01: Ugh.
[0:39:43 – 0:39:43] SPEAKER_01: Oof.
[0:39:45 – 0:39:46] Adam: Yeah.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:47] Adam: Gordons.
[0:39:47 – 0:39:48] Adam: Yeah, pretty much.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:50] Adam: McMasters.
[0:39:50 – 0:39:52] Adam: That’s a Gordon Bombay barrel right there.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:53] Erik: Gray Wolf Vodka.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:59] Adam: You can drive your convertible straight off a Hennepin with a barrel like that.
[0:39:59 – 0:40:00] Erik: Yep.
[0:40:00 – 0:40:02] Erik: It was a great time, and thanks for the show, fellas.
[0:40:02 – 0:40:06] Erik: Hopefully, we’ll go down the gun flint next year, and we’ll bring some art supplies.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:08] Erik: Thanks, Tyler.
[0:40:08 – 0:40:10] Adam: We’ll look forward to seeing you, Tyler.
[0:40:10 – 0:40:11] Erik: Thank you for the response.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:13] Adam: We’ll keep the light on for you.
[0:40:13 – 0:40:14] Erik: We’ll keep the light on for you.
[0:40:15 – 0:40:16] Erik: We sure will.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:19] Erik: Where are we at here?
[0:40:21 – 0:40:21] Erik: Oh, God.
[0:40:23 – 0:40:24] Erik: It’s going to have to happen.
[0:40:24 – 0:40:24] Erik: We’re moving on.
[0:40:25 – 0:40:26] Adam: Moving on.
[0:40:27 – 0:40:27] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:40:30 – 0:40:31] Adam: Good thing I got a tall beer.
[0:40:33 – 0:40:35] Adam: We got ourselves a real doozy coming up.
[0:40:35 – 0:40:36] Adam: It’s all one paragraph.
[0:40:36 – 0:40:38] Adam: It’s all one paragraph.
[0:40:38 – 0:40:43] Adam: Luckily, I wore my contacts today due to the snowmobile helmet.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:46] Adam: The goggles I have, they don’t fit over my glasses, Eric.
[0:40:46 – 0:40:47] Adam: The goggles.
[0:40:47 – 0:40:48] Adam: So I had to wear the contacts.
[0:40:48 – 0:40:50] Adam: They do nothing.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:54] Adam: If I’m going out blapping, I got to have the contacts in.
[0:40:54 – 0:40:54] Adam: So I got eagle eyes.
[0:40:56 – 0:40:59] Adam: And I’m drinking a Mighty Eagle lager beer.
[0:40:59 – 0:40:59] Adam: This is really good.
[0:41:00 – 0:41:00] Adam: Blood Brothers.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:03] Adam: Indeed.
[0:41:04 – 0:41:05] SPEAKER_01: You know what’s up, Hector.
[0:41:06 – 0:41:09] Adam: Next up on the show, a dear friend of the show, Squarejaw77.
[0:41:10 – 0:41:21] Adam: Two months ago, with five boxes of wine, we did three trips this year, but had planned four.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:26] Adam: And the first trip was with my brother-in-law, and it was his very first BWCA experience.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:31] Adam: Eventually, I want to spend 10 plus days in Wabakimi sometime in the next few years.
[0:41:32 – 0:41:36] Adam: And being that my wife is not interested, my brother-in-law is filling that role.
[0:41:36 – 0:41:39] Adam: Yeah, you got to train them up.
[0:41:39 – 0:41:42] Adam: 2028 sounds like a great year to visit Wabakimi as an aside.
[0:41:44 – 0:41:48] Adam: Since he has no experience, I figure a few BWCA trips would do the trick.
[0:41:49 – 0:41:52] Adam: The spring trip was the end of May and a Moodrow entry point.
[0:41:52 – 0:42:00] Adam: We spent the first night on the north end of Moose, the second night on Basswood River, and the third night on the south end of Foretown.
[0:42:01 – 0:42:04] Adam: The highlight of this trip was the fantastic trek from Horse to Basswood.
[0:42:05 – 0:42:08] Adam: And then securing the campsite across the bay from the falls.
[0:42:08 – 0:42:08] Adam: Oh, yes.
[0:42:09 – 0:42:10] Adam: What a magical sight.
[0:42:10 – 0:42:18] Adam: We braved some pretty hairy winds to go see the pictos on Basswood and managed to catch and eat some quality walleye each night.
[0:42:18 – 0:42:19] Adam: Brother-in-law Chris…
[0:42:19 – 0:42:22] Adam: had an absolute great time, and was hooked from the get-go.
[0:42:23 – 0:42:26] Adam: I don’t know how you can’t be with a route like that out of Mudro.
[0:42:27 – 0:42:30] Adam: I’ve never started there before, and now I can see what the hype is all about.
[0:42:31 – 0:42:34] Adam: The second trip was a seven-day trip in the Huetico.
[0:42:35 – 0:42:38] Adam: This was a group of four, including my wife and two friends.
[0:42:38 – 0:42:44] Adam: We decided on the Falls chain and camped on Sagonegans, the site next to the Bald Rock Falls.
[0:42:44 – 0:43:14] Adam: kenny lake and cash bay we went and dipped our toes in the con nippy and turned around to head back highlights include that campsite next to bald rock falls overall fishing and the solitude of the queue that campsite next to the falls was so amazing we decided to stay an extra night that was wise we put on life jackets and floated down the rapids which was fun until my wife got out of the water covered from waist down and baby leeches yeah
[0:43:16 – 0:43:16] Erik: No.
[0:43:16 – 0:43:17] SPEAKER_01: What?
[0:43:18 – 0:43:19] SPEAKER_01: The false chain did that to you?
[0:43:20 – 0:43:20] UNKNOWN: No.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:22] SPEAKER_01: Did you know about this, Eric?
[0:43:22 – 0:43:23] SPEAKER_01: I don’t like that.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:24] Adam: It was game over.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:28] Adam: Did you know there’s baby leeches in the false chain?
[0:43:28 – 0:43:39] Erik: I mean, I’ve seen the big leech with all the baby leeches on the bottom, and it makes me want to throw up in my butt, but I didn’t think that the baby leeches would ever want to attach, go away from mom.
[0:43:39 – 0:43:41] Adam: They are going after people now.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:41] Erik: Ugh.
[0:43:43 – 0:43:45] Adam: It was game over for fishing after that.
[0:43:45 – 0:43:52] Adam: Additionally, there was a big snake den on the rock outcropping in front of the falls, and my wife is very terrified of snakes.
[0:43:52 – 0:43:53] Erik: Snake den?
[0:43:53 – 0:43:54] Erik: A hibernaculum?
[0:43:54 – 0:43:55] Adam: It’s a hibernaculum.
[0:43:55 – 0:43:55] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:43:56 – 0:44:00] Adam: We were able to keep her distracted the first day, but she saw them the second.
[0:44:00 – 0:44:04] Adam: It still went just fine, sure.
[0:44:05 – 0:44:09] Adam: That same campsite in layover day, we had some of the best fishing of my life.
[0:44:09 – 0:44:14] Adam: So many huge bass, a couple large walleyes, and some of the biggest northerns we have ever seen.
[0:44:14 – 0:44:16] Adam: We caught many of them.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:17] Adam: It was amazing.
[0:44:17 – 0:44:23] Adam: The only drawback of the Quetico trip was that it rained about half the time, and that makes the wife a little crabby.
[0:44:23 – 0:44:31] Adam: Side note, my wife was going to tell me during this trip that it might be her last trip because she has lost her zeal for it.
[0:44:32 – 0:44:40] Adam: However, she loved the falls trip so much, she just told me about that and said that she will still come if I can include more exciting waterfalls and such.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:41] Adam: There we go.
[0:44:42 – 0:44:46] Erik: You kind of hit the top of the ceiling in terms of trips that revolve around falls.
[0:44:46 – 0:44:47] Adam: That’s the best one out there.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:49] Erik: Maybe do the Malign River.
[0:44:49 – 0:44:51] Erik: There’s a lot of moving water over there.
[0:44:51 – 0:44:53] Adam: I think she’s tired of tough grinding trips.
[0:44:53 – 0:44:54] Adam: It works for me.
[0:44:54 – 0:45:00] Adam: The last trip was again with my brother-in-law, Chris, and this was a simple three-day base camp fishing trip.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:04] Adam: We entered Moose River South and made camp on Big Moose Lake.
[0:45:05 – 0:45:09] Adam: It was nonstop smallmouth bass all day, all night, every day.
[0:45:11 – 0:45:12] Erik: Non-stop?
[0:45:12 – 0:45:13] Erik: I added the night thing.
[0:45:13 – 0:45:14] Erik: I got a little excited.
[0:45:14 – 0:45:15] Erik: All night.
[0:45:15 – 0:45:16] Adam: They were jumping in the hammocks.
[0:45:17 – 0:45:18] Adam: Jeez.
[0:45:20 – 0:45:23] Adam: We caught two very nice walleyes the second night and then ate them.
[0:45:23 – 0:45:26] Adam: But otherwise, nothing but smallmouth bass and rock bass.
[0:45:26 – 0:45:30] Adam: The wind picked up while we were on the leeward side and it caught us off guard.
[0:45:31 – 0:45:35] Adam: Brother-in-law Chris got to experience how to manage some high winds and how to maneuver them.
[0:45:36 – 0:45:38] Adam: He was a great learner and we made it safe.
[0:45:39 – 0:45:45] Adam: I was sweating in the back but he was hooting and hollering in the front even when the waves were crashing over the front of the canoe.
[0:45:45 – 0:45:49] Adam: To me, it was terrifying but he thought it was a blast.
[0:45:49 – 0:45:53] Adam: The drawback of Big Moose was that the water was really gross.
[0:45:53 – 0:45:54] Adam: I didn’t even want to filter it.
[0:45:54 – 0:45:58] Adam: It seemed very boggy and full of floating sediment and debris.
[0:45:59 – 0:46:02] Adam: All in all, I enjoyed three really great trips.
[0:46:03 – 0:46:06] Adam: I had never been to the Quetico before and will absolutely be back.
[0:46:07 – 0:46:10] Adam: And that Mudro trip is in my top five trips of all time.
[0:46:11 – 0:46:15] Adam: Had great fishing during all three trips, and everyone stayed safe and injury-free.
[0:46:16 – 0:46:18] Adam: Very excited for next year.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:19] Adam: The end.
[0:46:20 – 0:46:20] Adam: Thank you.
[0:46:21 – 0:46:21] Erik: The end.
[0:46:22 – 0:46:23] Erik: Wow, first time.
[0:46:23 – 0:46:26] Adam: I think I remember hearing about that last spring.
[0:46:26 – 0:46:30] Adam: So you had like two top five trips of your life this year or last year.
[0:46:31 – 0:46:33] Erik: Yeah, first time quite a go.
[0:46:33 – 0:46:37] Adam: Makes me want to rededicate ourselves to trying to get into Mudro, Eric.
[0:46:38 – 0:46:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:46:39 – 0:47:02] Adam: i want to see the horse river before i die we didn’t get on the get on permit day somebody will drop one oh yeah if the permit is still permitting it’s never really been our style is anybody gonna be checking permits this year we’re not advocating for uh skullduggery or lawlessness but uh if the permit system is down how does that all work
[0:47:03 – 0:47:05] Erik: I don’t know if the system will be down.
[0:47:05 – 0:47:05] Adam: It’s up for now.
[0:47:06 – 0:47:07] Adam: So let’s just play by the rules.
[0:47:08 – 0:47:13] Adam: We’ll keep our eyes peeled for a Mudro permit, though, for June because we have yet to acquire a permit for June.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:21] Adam: And we are legally obligated with our contract with Tumble Home LLC to do a trip every June and see how bad the bugs are.
[0:47:22 – 0:47:26] Adam: It’s also we’re doing like a mosquito survey for the state of Minnesota.
[0:47:26 – 0:47:27] Erik: Yeah, legally obligated.
[0:47:28 – 0:47:30] Adam: So that’s all part of the contract we signed.
[0:47:30 – 0:47:33] Adam: Our lawyer is amongst the best in the business.
[0:47:33 – 0:47:34] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:34 – 0:47:43] Erik: Trevor is just over in the corner tapping his very not concealed concealed carry weapon on his back, imploring us.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:45] Erik: We are legally obligated.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:46] Adam: Must go.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:47] Adam: Taps the gun.
[0:47:47 – 0:47:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:48 – 0:47:51] Adam: Remember who really runs things around here, boys.
[0:47:52 – 0:47:53] Adam: Take it easy, Trevor.
[0:47:53 – 0:47:54] Adam: Yikes.
[0:47:54 – 0:47:55] Adam: Giving us that look again, Eric.
[0:47:55 – 0:47:57] Adam: He’s got that crazy look in his eye.
[0:47:57 – 0:48:01] Erik: Yeah, I think it might be time for another European sojourn for you.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:05] SPEAKER_01: You’re telling us we paddled halfway across Mudro in the wrong direction?
[0:48:05 – 0:48:08] Adam: How are we doing?
[0:48:08 – 0:48:09] Adam: How many more comments do we got to go here?
[0:48:09 – 0:48:11] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:48:11 – 0:48:12] Erik: A couple.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:13] Erik: Yeah, we got to get through.
[0:48:13 – 0:48:13] Adam: We’re done.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:14] Erik: We’re done.
[0:48:15 – 0:48:15] Erik: Good night.
[0:48:16 – 0:48:17] Adam: Sorry, last two.
[0:48:17 – 0:48:18] Adam: You’re too late.
[0:48:19 – 0:48:20] Adam: Not enough votes.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:20] Adam: You didn’t make the show.
[0:48:21 – 0:48:22] Adam: We should always cut the last comment off.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:25] Adam: Sorry, you didn’t make the show, Basmata.
[0:48:26 – 0:48:28] Adam: You’re out.
[0:48:29 – 0:48:32] Adam: You’ve been sent home to Great Slave Lake, you bum.
[0:48:32 – 0:48:36] Adam: Yeah, it used to be a little point of… Yeah, you’re not the Red Lantern.
[0:48:37 – 0:48:39] Adam: You just don’t even get mentioned.
[0:48:40 – 0:48:40] Erik: Sorry.
[0:48:41 – 0:48:42] Erik: Cheap Dancer?
[0:48:43 – 0:48:44] Erik: Never heard of him.
[0:48:44 – 0:48:45] Erik: Good evening, tumble homies.
[0:48:47 – 0:48:51] Erik: As I lounge in my favorite leathery armchair reflecting on this past year…
[0:48:53 – 0:49:08] Erik: through my Coghlan’s camp lens, can’t help but become overwhelmed with feelings of joy and gratitude to the Red Orb for allowing me to enjoy two excursions into the Tumblewaters this year.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:09] Adam: Tumblewaters?
[0:49:09 – 0:49:11] Adam: That’s got to be a first use of that term.
[0:49:11 – 0:49:12] Adam: It might be.
[0:49:12 – 0:49:13] Adam: That’s really catchy.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:14] Adam: How has nobody ever come up with that before?
[0:49:15 – 0:49:18] Erik: You can put that word in front of just about anything and it makes sense.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:19] Erik: That’s such a good word.
[0:49:20 – 0:49:28] Erik: In May, I made a super secret assault on the pig heart with three spies as my campmates.
[0:49:28 – 0:49:29] Adam: That was only a year ago?
[0:49:29 – 0:49:31] Erik: Yeah, not even.
[0:49:31 – 0:49:32] Erik: Less than a year.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:36] Erik: This trip has been reported on the podcast already.
[0:49:37 – 0:49:38] Erik: No need to fret.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:41] Erik: I will not be leaving any clues.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:44] Erik: This sun is really making reading a little challenging here.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:46] Erik: Put the sunglasses on, maybe.
[0:49:47 – 0:49:48] Erik: You should wear your contacts.
[0:49:48 – 0:49:51] Erik: I will not be leaving any clues to the location today.
[0:49:52 – 0:49:59] Erik: As far as I know, we are still at three homies finding the pig heart that I know of.
[0:49:59 – 0:50:02] Adam: Yeah, we didn’t have any fall chainies.
[0:50:02 – 0:50:09] Erik: Yeah, myself, frequent walk, 1893, and fishing with dynamite.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:10] Erik: Who’s to say?
[0:50:11 – 0:50:12] Erik: Maybe he’s been moved.
[0:50:13 – 0:50:32] Erik: maybe from the spring shoulder to the autumn shoulder my next trip was in september daughter and son-in-law joined my wife and i into our point of entering at 45 in search of wet cat uh-huh uh 45 what is that morgan
[0:50:35 – 0:50:59] Adam: yeah i think that’s morgan is instead we found a dead moose oh which also brought wolf howling is that a reference to the links i saw swimming in morgan like yeah in 2014 weird uh yeah wet cat lake wet cat yeah that’s we’re changing the name officially we’ll call up uh our friends and make it happen
[0:51:00 – 0:51:01] Adam: Bird of the trip.
[0:51:01 – 0:51:02] Adam: Bird of the trip.
[0:51:03 – 0:51:10] Erik: Was a camp saw wet owl singing to us around the evening fire on Vista.
[0:51:11 – 0:51:12] Adam: They got the nicest owl song.
[0:51:13 – 0:51:13] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:51:13 – 0:51:19] Erik: It’s a little too monotone for me.
[0:51:20 – 0:51:22] Erik: Give me a winter wren.
[0:51:22 – 0:51:24] Erik: The wild winter wren every day.
[0:51:25 – 0:51:25] Erik: Sure.
[0:51:25 – 0:51:26] Erik: Surprise of the trip.
[0:51:27 – 0:51:31] Erik: Last night, brownies cooked in a Coghlan’s camp cooker on Caribou Lake.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:33] Erik: Tres Tasty Ammo.
[0:51:33 – 0:51:34] Adam: Cooker brownies?
[0:51:34 – 0:51:35] Adam: Cooker brownies.
[0:51:35 – 0:51:36] Adam: We gotta make that happen.
[0:51:36 – 0:51:37] Adam: That sounds great.
[0:51:37 – 0:51:42] Adam: We were, I think, caught off guard in the amount of treats and sweets that people are making.
[0:51:43 – 0:51:46] Adam: But that one seems really achievable.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:50] Erik: Just a little bit of batter in the cooker?
[0:51:50 – 0:51:50] Adam: Sure.
[0:51:52 – 0:51:53] Adam: Maybe a little canola oil.
[0:51:53 – 0:51:58] Erik: Yeah, maybe you mess a couple up, but, you know, I’m sure you get one figured out just perfectly.
[0:51:58 – 0:51:59] Adam: Perfect camp brownie.
[0:51:59 – 0:52:00] Erik: Yes.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:01] Adam: I think I can handle that.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:01] Adam: Sure.
[0:52:02 – 0:52:03] Adam: I’m no cobbler, man.
[0:52:03 – 0:52:04] Adam: I’m a simple man, Eric.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Adam: You’re no cobbler man?
[0:52:05 – 0:52:06] Adam: I ain’t no cobbler man.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:08] Adam: I’m a brony man.
[0:52:09 – 0:52:10] Adam: Yee-haw!
[0:52:11 – 0:52:13] Adam: Cheap Dancer always brings out the best in us.
[0:52:14 – 0:52:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:14 – 0:52:17] Erik: Here’s how our group stands on some controversial topics.
[0:52:17 – 0:52:18] Adam: Hmm.
[0:52:19 – 0:52:20] Erik: Now we’re getting to it.
[0:52:22 – 0:52:23] Erik: I don’t know what the equal sign means.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:27] Erik: Equals four wet feet.
[0:52:27 – 0:52:29] Erik: Underscore two dirt nappers.
[0:52:31 – 0:52:35] Adam: What’s the little curlicue hyphen that’s curlied?
[0:52:36 – 0:52:38] Erik: This one right there?
[0:52:38 – 0:52:39] Adam: It just means ish.
[0:52:39 – 0:52:41] Erik: Two skysleepers.
[0:52:41 – 0:52:42] Erik: Two-ish.
[0:52:44 – 0:52:44] Erik: Bullet point.
[0:52:45 – 0:52:46] Erik: Three bagel eaters.
[0:52:46 – 0:52:47] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:52:47 – 0:52:50] Erik: And then equal sign one bagel balker.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:51] SPEAKER_01: Bark at the bagel.
[0:52:51 – 0:52:52] SPEAKER_01: I bark at that bagel.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:56] Adam: I recoil from this sloppy bagel.
[0:52:58 – 0:53:02] Erik: Awesome to meet Invisible Biscuit for a merch drop in Duluth on the way up.
[0:53:03 – 0:53:09] Erik: Fun experience trading some bootleg merch slaps for a legitimate Tumble Home sticker with Mike at Rockwood.
[0:53:10 – 0:53:14] Erik: For anybody who was wondering, three bootleg stickers are worth one legit Tumble Home sticker.
[0:53:15 – 0:53:15] Adam: That’s the exchange rate.
[0:53:16 – 0:53:16] Adam: That makes sense.
[0:53:16 – 0:53:17] Adam: It’s going to never change.
[0:53:17 – 0:53:19] Adam: It’s baked into the code.
[0:53:20 – 0:53:29] Erik: Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with Eric or Adam and Graham Ray, as is tradition, but I was able to drop an egg box full of merch at the co-op.
[0:53:29 – 0:53:30] Erik: I’m pretty sure, what?
[0:53:30 – 0:53:31] Erik: I’m pretty sure I did see you.
[0:53:32 – 0:53:35] Erik: I told the woman who took the box from me that it was not art supplies.
[0:53:35 – 0:53:41] Erik: The smiley wink she gave me is now tattooed on my heart.
[0:53:41 – 0:53:42] Adam: Oh, that’s great.
[0:53:42 – 0:53:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:53:43 – 0:53:45] Adam: You can trust the comrades.
[0:53:46 – 0:53:47] Erik: P.S.
[0:53:47 – 0:53:48] Erik: Gordy patches are still available.
[0:53:48 – 0:53:52] Erik: Contact me in the Reddit, the Discord, or ask the Red Orb for guidance.
[0:53:53 – 0:53:58] Adam: Oh, Orb, tell me the way and the answer.
[0:53:58 – 0:54:00] Erik: Edited after sobering up.
[0:54:00 – 0:54:01] Adam: Thank you.
[0:54:01 – 0:54:02] Adam: The Hemingway way.
[0:54:04 – 0:54:06] Adam: What’s the Hemingway way to sober up?
[0:54:06 – 0:54:08] Erik: I don’t know about how he sobers up.
[0:54:08 – 0:54:11] Adam: Keep drinking until the sun comes up and come around the other side?
[0:54:12 – 0:54:13] Erik: Just many hairs of the dog.
[0:54:13 – 0:54:14] Adam: There you go.
[0:54:15 – 0:54:15] Erik: Not one.
[0:54:16 – 0:54:16] Erik: Not two.
[0:54:17 – 0:54:19] Adam: It’s like Ouroboros of orbs.
[0:54:21 – 0:54:21] Adam: Ouroboros?
[0:54:22 – 0:54:23] Adam: Orbo-boros.
[0:54:23 – 0:54:24] Adam: Orbo-boros.
[0:54:24 – 0:54:25] SPEAKER_01: Of orbs.
[0:54:26 – 0:54:27] SPEAKER_01: That’s the Hemingway way.
[0:54:28 – 0:54:29] SPEAKER_01: The Hemingway way.
[0:54:29 – 0:54:34] Adam: That’s why the cats have six toes and the drinks have little umbrellas in them, Eric.
[0:54:35 – 0:54:37] Erik: Still some of his cats roaming around.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:38] Erik: I saw him.
[0:54:38 – 0:54:39] Erik: His house.
[0:54:39 – 0:54:40] Adam: I seen him.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:54:41 – 0:54:42] Adam: Holy moly.
[0:54:42 – 0:54:43] Adam: I know.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:44] Adam: Next up on the show.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:45] Adam: Four-part series.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:48] Adam: Dear friend of the show, Bob Ross Paddler.
[0:54:48 – 0:54:55] Adam: This is a mini-series that actually won more awards, this comment, than Lonesome Dove did in the 90s.
[0:54:55 – 0:54:58] Erik: I was going to say, this is the Lonesome Dove version of podcasting series.
[0:54:59 – 0:55:00] Adam: It just will never end.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:08] Adam: Chris Cooper stars as Bob Ross Paddler two months ago with three boxes of wine.
[0:55:08 – 0:55:09] Adam: Jason Bourne’s boss?
[0:55:09 – 0:55:12] Adam: My wife ran off with a whiskey boat, man.
[0:55:13 – 0:55:15] Adam: What in the tarnation?
[0:55:15 – 0:55:18] Adam: These darn whiskey boats.
[0:55:20 – 0:55:22] Adam: That was a July Johnson reference.
[0:55:22 – 0:55:26] Adam: If anybody out there is confused as to what the hell is going on right now, we barely know.
[0:55:26 – 0:55:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:26 – 0:55:27] Adam: Next up on the show.
[0:55:27 – 0:55:28] SPEAKER_01: Just stay that way.
[0:55:28 – 0:55:29] Adam: Thank you.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:36] Adam: Thank you, and thank you for Bob Ross Paddler for submitting this comment.
[0:55:37 – 0:55:39] Adam: I’m going to read it unedited now like a good boy.
[0:55:39 – 0:55:40] Adam: I’m a lad.
[0:55:41 – 0:55:46] Adam: One trip this year, the week before Memorial Day, solo down the Frost River.
[0:55:46 – 0:55:48] Erik: Sounds like high water.
[0:55:50 – 0:55:50] Adam: Yee-haw.
[0:55:51 – 0:55:53] Adam: There, I already edited it, so I take it back.
[0:55:53 – 0:55:54] Adam: Damn.
[0:55:54 – 0:55:55] Adam: You made it one sentence.
[0:55:57 – 0:55:58] Adam: Have you no self-control?
[0:56:00 – 0:56:12] Adam: Entered at Missing Link, got a bit lost on Snipe, did some impromptu canoe surfing on Rib, bulldozed my way through Whitecaps on Long Island and Frost, and then snagged Campsite One on Frost.
[0:56:13 – 0:56:18] Adam: The raven family kept me entertained, and I also heard the pumping of an American bittern here.
[0:56:18 – 0:56:19] Adam: All right.
[0:56:19 – 0:56:20] Adam: Some bittern pumps.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:25] Adam: It was fun hearing you guys describe this campsite just a few days after my visit.
[0:56:26 – 0:56:31] Adam: I left a perfectly triangular rock near the screwy home-brewed fire grate there.
[0:56:32 – 0:56:33] Adam: Did you see the triangular rock?
[0:56:33 – 0:56:34] Erik: I don’t recall.
[0:56:35 – 0:56:37] Adam: I’ll have to review the evidence.
[0:56:37 – 0:56:38] Adam: I don’t recall that either.
[0:56:39 – 0:56:42] Adam: I was too transfixed by the raven nest.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:44] Adam: And a few other things.
[0:56:45 – 0:56:52] Adam: I ran the Frost River in a couple hours, thanks to high water levels that allowed me to bypass over ten beaver dams in the section after Pencil.
[0:56:53 – 0:57:06] Adam: While I had hoped to spend a night on Bologna, the weather radio was spewing portents of doom for the rest of the week, so I chose to push on, eventually making camp at an incredible campsite on the north end of Little Sag.
[0:57:07 – 0:57:11] Adam: The Morroda Little Sag Portage was the MVP of the trip.
[0:57:12 – 0:57:13] Adam: Gorgeous, I agree.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:14] Adam: It’s one of my favorites.
[0:57:14 – 0:57:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:57:15 – 0:57:19] Adam: I spent two nights there preparing for then riding out the deluge.
[0:57:20 – 0:57:24] Adam: Then I got antsy and pushed to a completely exposed campsite on Alpine in the tail end of the storm.
[0:57:25 – 0:57:30] Adam: That was a day unlike any other, which included some struggles finding portages.
[0:57:30 – 0:57:33] Adam: A stunning view of a raging Mueller Falls.
[0:57:33 – 0:57:43] Adam: then staggering into camp late and realizing I was too exposed, too cold, too wet, and needed to figure out a way to get warmed up pronto.
[0:57:44 – 0:57:51] Adam: The full story was relayed in the storms episode earlier in the year, so I will not elaborate further.
[0:57:51 – 0:57:55] Erik: I was going to say, I feel like I did recognize some parts of that story.
[0:57:55 – 0:58:00] Erik: The solo pushing into weather when you maybe shouldn’t have.
[0:58:01 – 0:58:03] Erik: Yes, it’s all coming back to me now.
[0:58:03 – 0:58:06] Erik: It’s all coming back to us now.
[0:58:07 – 0:58:14] Adam: The highlight was spending my final two nights on Grandpa, fishing as much as possible for pike when it wasn’t too windy.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:20] Adam: After another hair-raising paddle out on Seagull to the exit, I was ready to take a break from cold, wet, and windy.
[0:58:21 – 0:58:23] Adam: And now, I can’t wait to go back again.
[0:58:25 – 0:58:29] Adam: The beauty of traveling solo is the freedom to make the most of each moment, however you wish.
[0:58:30 – 0:58:36] Adam: This year’s trip didn’t go at all as planned, but the challenges and successes were products of my own decisions…
[0:58:37 – 0:58:57] Adam: some stupider than others dealing with challenges is a lot more entertaining when you know that you’re the only one to put yourself in that situation now you get to figure out how to get through it next year will be my first year to bring my son up here though we have already spent a lot of time planning the perfect trip i’m sure we’ll make our share of bad decisions too
[0:58:58 – 0:59:06] Adam: The wilderness will hold us accountable for those decisions, we’ll muddle through, and when it’s done, we’ll have a story to share together.
[0:59:07 – 0:59:09] Adam: Entry Day can’t come soon enough.
[0:59:11 – 0:59:12] Adam: Indeed.
[0:59:13 – 0:59:13] Adam: Indeed.
[0:59:13 – 0:59:15] Adam: Yeah, soon enough.
[0:59:16 – 0:59:17] Adam: We’ve got a show sponsor coming up next.
[0:59:20 – 0:59:20] Erik: Oh, boy.
[0:59:22 – 0:59:22] Adam: Wow.
[0:59:22 – 0:59:29] Adam: Thank you for the comment, and I am looking forward to hearing how your trip with your son goes next year.
[0:59:29 – 0:59:33] Erik: It’s all just going to turn into, we just do two questions a year.
[0:59:33 – 0:59:34] Erik: Where are you going?
[0:59:35 – 0:59:36] Erik: And then where did you go?
[0:59:36 – 0:59:38] Erik: And it’ll take up the whole year.
[0:59:38 – 0:59:39] Erik: It’s perfect.
[0:59:39 – 0:59:39] Erik: It’s all we need.
[0:59:39 – 0:59:41] Erik: It’s easy.
[0:59:42 – 0:59:43] Erik: Free content.
[0:59:43 – 0:59:44] Erik: Two months ago.
[0:59:44 – 0:59:45] Erik: Edited two months ago.
[0:59:46 – 0:59:46] Erik: Squirt fruit.
[0:59:48 – 0:59:49] Erik: Take a deep breath here.
[0:59:51 – 0:59:55] Erik: If you remember… Oh, he’s already putting us to work here?
[0:59:55 – 1:00:02] Erik: From my early season pre-panel post, I had two main trips planned this past year.
[1:00:02 – 1:00:05] Erik: One to Beaver House, Cirrus, and Quetico with the kids.
[1:00:06 – 1:00:09] Erik: And the other was the infamous Chartered Shuttle.
[1:00:10 – 1:00:10] Erik: That’s right.
[1:00:11 – 1:00:13] Erik: Chartering success.
[1:00:13 – 1:00:14] Erik: Yes.
[1:00:14 – 1:00:15] Adam: Episode title.
[1:00:15 – 1:00:15] Erik: Yep.
[1:00:16 – 1:00:23] Erik: Out to the archipelago on the north shore of Kichigumi for our 20-year anniversary.
[1:00:25 – 1:00:29] Erik: Unfortunately, there were a few interesting curveballs this season.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:31] Erik: First, I broke three ribs at the end of June.
[1:00:33 – 1:00:36] Adam: Did an old man fall into you on a portage?
[1:00:36 – 1:00:42] Erik: Yeah, were you leaning up against a poplar on the end of the portage from Caribou?
[1:00:44 – 1:00:49] Erik: So I wasn’t sure I would be fit to paddle a big trip at all.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:57] Erik: And second, the affordable quote-unquote mom-and-pop shuttle operation based out of Terrace Bay, Ontario, shut down.
[1:00:58 – 1:01:01] Erik: And the other boat charter option quoted me $2,500.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:02] Erik: For a boat ride?
[1:01:02 – 1:01:02] Erik: My God.
[1:01:07 – 1:01:09] Adam: You only need one penny to get on the frog ferry.
[1:01:10 – 1:01:12] Erik: Yeah, that’s true.
[1:01:12 – 1:01:13] Adam: I ain’t got no sense, Eric.
[1:01:14 – 1:01:15] Adam: No sense at all.
[1:01:16 – 1:01:20] Erik: These two hiccups had me worried that none of our plans were going to transpire at all.
[1:01:21 – 1:01:26] Erik: Fast forward four weeks, and we decided to press on with our family Quetico trip.
[1:01:27 – 1:01:31] Erik: As we turned onto the access road, we were dealt one final curveball.
[1:01:32 – 1:01:40] Erik: J. Dwayne Poussoance texted us to let us know that we were departing during an active tornado watch.
[1:01:40 – 1:01:40] Erik: What?
[1:01:41 – 1:01:42] Erik: Perfect, I thought.
[1:01:42 – 1:01:45] Erik: Why the loon bleep can’t anything work out for me this year?
[1:01:46 – 1:01:47] SPEAKER_01: I just need a win.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:58] Erik: Long story short, we assessed the weather situation when we got to the access point and made the call to head into the park.
[1:01:58 – 1:01:59] Erik: Yeah, Quetico tornado.
[1:01:59 – 1:02:00] Erik: It’s never happened.
[1:02:00 – 1:02:01] Erik: Just press on.
[1:02:02 – 1:02:08] Erik: Our goal was to get to the first site on Cirrus as fast as we could since the wind wasn’t too bad at that point.
[1:02:08 – 1:02:30] Erik: and it seemed safe what ribs were relatively sore at first and with the quadruple carry i was scared i made a big mistake but then the weirdest thing happened the paddling portaging sleeping on the ground for the next nine days actually made them better hmm forest healing forest healing
[1:02:31 – 1:02:41] Erik: Whether it was the increased blood flow to the fractures, or the dopamine releases from being in my happy place, or whether it was something deeper and more magical, I will never know for certain.
[1:02:41 – 1:02:43] Adam: A little barometer from a twister.
[1:02:44 – 1:02:46] Erik: Yeah, maybe it was just that deep low.
[1:02:47 – 1:02:48] Erik: But I do know this.
[1:02:48 – 1:02:50] Erik: Somehow Quetico made me better.
[1:02:50 – 1:02:51] Erik: It always does.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:57] Erik: But by the end of the trip, I was operating at 110% and ready to take on the world.
[1:02:58 – 1:03:06] Erik: I have since learned what the local indigenous have historically referred to Quetico as land of the benevolent spirit.
[1:03:07 – 1:03:10] Erik: Quetico healing.
[1:03:10 – 1:03:11] Erik: What was it?
[1:03:11 – 1:03:13] Erik: The Quebec Timber Company?
[1:03:14 – 1:03:18] Erik: That was one of the… We, I think, talked about where the name came from at some point.
[1:03:18 – 1:03:18] Erik: Oh, right.
[1:03:18 – 1:03:19] Erik: That was…
[1:03:20 – 1:03:25] Erik: One of the theories, but I think the land of the benevolent spirit is really…
[1:03:27 – 1:03:27] Erik: Much more appropriate.
[1:03:28 – 1:03:30] SPEAKER_01: I got that feeling.
[1:03:30 – 1:03:31] Erik: We had a wonderful trip.
[1:03:31 – 1:03:32] Erik: Weather was perfect.
[1:03:32 – 1:03:36] Erik: Many memories were made with our two younger children.
[1:03:36 – 1:03:38] Erik: And I was full of gratitude.
[1:03:39 – 1:03:41] Erik: Overflowing with gratitude.
[1:03:41 – 1:03:41] Erik: Yes.
[1:03:42 – 1:03:43] Erik: I even got a 27-inch linker.
[1:03:43 – 1:03:44] Erik: Just trolling along.
[1:03:44 – 1:03:47] Adam: Minding my own business.
[1:03:47 – 1:03:48] Adam: It’s like 10 days of food there.
[1:03:49 – 1:03:49] Adam: In August.
[1:03:49 – 1:03:50] Adam: That’ll keep you going.
[1:03:51 – 1:03:54] Adam: Where’s the thermocline on Cirrus in August?
[1:03:54 – 1:03:55] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:03:55 – 1:04:06] Erik: I thought to myself that it would be impossible to top that trip and was worried my wife and I would be disappointed with our alternative anniversary trip planned later in August.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:07] Erik: But boy, was I wrong.
[1:04:08 – 1:04:12] Erik: Instead of Gitche Gumee, we headed north to Wabakimi.
[1:04:12 – 1:04:12] Erik: All right.
[1:04:12 – 1:04:13] Erik: Oh, boy.
[1:04:13 – 1:04:15] Erik: For my favorite canoe trip so far.
[1:04:16 – 1:04:20] Erik: We’re not new to the area and have done several Wabakimi adjacent trips.
[1:04:21 – 1:04:21] Erik: Adjacent?
[1:04:22 – 1:04:23] Erik: What’s adjacent?
[1:04:23 – 1:04:24] Erik: The Wabakimi?
[1:04:24 – 1:04:27] Erik: Just the Canadian lake at that point, right?
[1:04:29 – 1:04:32] Erik: This was the first time we actually ventured into the park itself.
[1:04:33 – 1:04:36] Erik: I’m such a, I just don’t know how Wabakimi works.
[1:04:37 – 1:04:41] Erik: Still enough adjacent lakes, like a Superior National Park situation.
[1:04:41 – 1:04:42] Adam: Multiple tiers and rings.
[1:04:42 – 1:04:42] Adam: Yeah.
[1:04:43 – 1:04:43] Erik: Yeah.
[1:04:44 – 1:04:47] Erik: The wife and I did an out and back six day river trip.
[1:04:48 – 1:04:53] Erik: A mix of some more technical portages, lining, light whitewater, and a bit of type two fun.
[1:04:54 – 1:04:55] Erik: I know what you mean.
[1:04:55 – 1:04:58] Erik: Yeah, not fun in the moment, but fun afterwards.
[1:04:59 – 1:04:59] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:00 – 1:05:07] Erik: And I can honestly say that this trip had the most beautiful lake I’ve ever experienced in my life to date.
[1:05:08 – 1:05:09] Erik: Big Lake excluded, of course.
[1:05:09 – 1:05:11] Erik: You go ahead and keep your secrets.
[1:05:11 – 1:05:13] Erik: It was sacred and special, and I will never forget it.
[1:05:14 – 1:05:17] Erik: In fact, I keep thinking about elements of this trip every few days.
[1:05:17 – 1:05:18] Erik: I can’t wait to go back.
[1:05:19 – 1:05:20] Adam: Waba Kimi.
[1:05:20 – 1:05:21] Erik: Selling some Waba Kimi.
[1:05:21 – 1:05:24] Erik: Forget the Mudro, Eric.
[1:05:24 – 1:05:25] Erik: I want that Waba Kimi.
[1:05:26 – 1:05:27] Erik: Well, 2026, Waba Kimi.
[1:05:27 – 1:05:28] Erik: Tumble Home, Waba Kimi.
[1:05:29 – 1:05:29] Erik: Let’s go.
[1:05:29 – 1:05:31] Erik: Here we go.
[1:05:31 – 1:05:35] Erik: If you need a guide for the Tumble Home Waba Kimi trip and don’t want to do a little…
[1:05:35 – 1:05:36] SPEAKER_01: He’s in.
[1:05:36 – 1:05:36] SPEAKER_01: You’re in.
[1:05:37 – 1:05:38] Adam: Say no more.
[1:05:38 – 1:05:39] Adam: Squirtfruit’s in.
[1:05:39 – 1:05:40] Adam: Squirtfruit just punched his ticket.
[1:05:41 – 1:05:41] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:41 – 1:05:42] Adam: Or their ticket.
[1:05:42 – 1:05:43] Erik: Well, yeah.
[1:05:43 – 1:05:44] Erik: Squirtfruit’s in.
[1:05:44 – 1:05:45] Erik: Just let me know.
[1:05:45 – 1:05:46] Erik: All right.
[1:05:46 – 1:05:46] Erik: You’re in.
[1:05:47 – 1:05:48] Erik: J.D.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:50] Erik: Puissance and I were talking.
[1:05:50 – 1:05:52] Erik: We have a few ideas that are shorter and doable.
[1:05:52 – 1:05:53] Adam: J.D.
[1:05:54 – 1:05:57] Adam: Puissance coming with two.
[1:05:58 – 1:05:58] Adam: Punch them.
[1:05:58 – 1:05:59] SPEAKER_01: They’re coming with.
[1:06:00 – 1:06:03] Adam: We’ve just taken a vote, and it was unanimous.
[1:06:03 – 1:06:05] Adam: Me, Eric, and Trevor all agree.
[1:06:05 – 1:06:06] Adam: You’re in.
[1:06:06 – 1:06:09] Erik: How many people are on this trip at this point now?
[1:06:09 – 1:06:10] Adam: We’re getting close to the limit.
[1:06:11 – 1:06:11] Erik: Is there a limit?
[1:06:11 – 1:06:12] Adam: I have a document.
[1:06:13 – 1:06:14] Erik: You just got a document?
[1:06:14 – 1:06:17] Adam: I got a document on my external hard drive.
[1:06:17 – 1:06:20] Adam: I’ll have to dig it out of the yard in the spring, and I’ll update it.
[1:06:20 – 1:06:21] Erik: Sure.
[1:06:21 – 1:06:23] Erik: That’s where I keep my hard drives, too.
[1:06:23 – 1:06:24] Erik: Buried in the yard.
[1:06:25 – 1:06:27] Adam: Like all the good things in life.
[1:06:27 – 1:06:28] Erik: Buried in the yard.
[1:06:28 – 1:06:29] Erik: Grill me.
[1:06:30 – 1:06:30] Erik: Grill me.
[1:06:32 – 1:06:33] SPEAKER_01: You’re not mad enough to grill me.
[1:06:33 – 1:06:37] SPEAKER_01: You sure that grill’s big enough?
[1:06:37 – 1:06:38] SPEAKER_01: What’d you say?
[1:06:38 – 1:06:41] SPEAKER_01: Thank you for the comment.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:42] Adam: That was great.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:43] Adam: That was good.
[1:06:43 – 1:06:44] Adam: It’s got me excited for Waba Kimi.
[1:06:44 – 1:06:45] Adam: I want that Waba Kimi, baby.
[1:06:45 – 1:06:47] Erik: Yeah, I want some Waba Kimi in my life.
[1:06:47 – 1:06:49] Adam: Next up on the show, Amateur Camper.
[1:06:50 – 1:06:53] Adam: One month ago, hey, three boxes of wine.
[1:06:53 – 1:06:53] Adam: We’re getting there.
[1:06:53 – 1:06:56] Adam: A lot of firsts this year in the park.
[1:06:56 – 1:06:59] Adam: First trip with our kids, age three and six.
[1:06:59 – 1:07:01] Adam: First trip with our new canoe.
[1:07:01 – 1:07:06] Adam: And first time making YouTube videos of our trips, which has been a lot of fun.
[1:07:06 – 1:07:09] Adam: Our first trip was the Frost River in June with my wife.
[1:07:10 – 1:07:14] Adam: We were out on the Frost River the same days as Eric and Adam, which we found out after the fact.
[1:07:15 – 1:07:17] Adam: but we never crossed paths.
[1:07:17 – 1:07:23] Adam: It was fun to hear them describe their trip and relate to some of the same things and people we encountered along the way.
[1:07:24 – 1:07:24] Adam: The solo man?
[1:07:25 – 1:07:26] Erik: Did you encounter the solo man?
[1:07:26 – 1:07:27] Adam: Yeah, what about that?
[1:07:27 – 1:07:28] Adam: That freak.
[1:07:31 – 1:07:32] Adam: You’re going the wrong way.
[1:07:33 – 1:07:37] Adam: Second trip was Baker Lake with the wife and kids in July.
[1:07:37 – 1:07:41] Adam: We did a one-night trip to get them some experience without committing to a larger route.
[1:07:41 – 1:07:45] Adam: We ended up staying on Kelly Lake, which was perfect, and the kids had a blast.
[1:07:46 – 1:07:53] Adam: We saw a husband and wife paddle by our campsite in a fully loaded tandem canoe, towing a kayak that was also overflowing with gear.
[1:07:54 – 1:07:57] Adam: I’d never seen anyone towing a second watercraft before.
[1:07:57 – 1:08:05] Adam: Also, on our way home, we stopped by Gooseberry Falls, which shattered whatever peace and serenity had been achieved in the Boundary Waters.
[1:08:06 – 1:08:10] Adam: There must have been 10,000 people there all standing or laying in ankle-deep water.
[1:08:11 – 1:08:14] Adam: Our third trip was in August with my wife and another couple.
[1:08:14 – 1:08:17] Adam: We did a Johnson Falls loop out of East Bearskin.
[1:08:17 – 1:08:23] Adam: We did a day trip up to the Clearwater Palisades, which was amazing, and we had fantastic swimming weather.
[1:08:24 – 1:08:32] Adam: We only got to swim in the lower falls because there was a guy skinny dipping with his family in the upper falls, and we didn’t want to intrude.
[1:08:33 – 1:08:34] Adam: This is Johnson Falls?
[1:08:35 – 1:08:36] Adam: That’s what it says here.
[1:08:37 – 1:08:39] Adam: Just one man skinny dipping?
[1:08:39 – 1:08:40] Adam: With his family.
[1:08:40 – 1:08:42] Adam: A whole family skinny dipping in the Upper Falls.
[1:08:42 – 1:08:46] Erik: But is just the man nude or is the entire family nude?
[1:08:46 – 1:08:49] Adam: The way I’m reading this, Eric, I think the whole family was nude.
[1:08:49 – 1:08:50] Adam: My God.
[1:08:50 – 1:08:52] Adam: Nude family in the Upper Falls.
[1:08:52 – 1:08:53] Erik: I don’t like that at all.
[1:08:54 – 1:08:54] Adam: That’s rude.
[1:08:54 – 1:08:55] Erik: That’s public.
[1:08:55 – 1:08:57] Erik: See, if you’re at a campsite.
[1:08:57 – 1:08:58] Adam: It’s indecent.
[1:08:58 – 1:08:59] Erik: You can do whatever you want.
[1:08:59 – 1:09:01] Adam: You can do whatever you want, and then you can do more.
[1:09:01 – 1:09:06] Erik: You walk around nude, fully clothed, anywhere in between.
[1:09:07 – 1:09:09] Erik: When you’re in a public space like that, which it is.
[1:09:10 – 1:09:12] Adam: Johnson Falls is a shared public space.
[1:09:12 – 1:09:13] Erik: You don’t get to get nude.
[1:09:13 – 1:09:14] Erik: I’m sorry.
[1:09:15 – 1:09:16] Erik: Unacceptable.
[1:09:17 – 1:09:19] Adam: The park rangers are here.
[1:09:19 – 1:09:19] Adam: Yeah.
[1:09:19 – 1:09:22] Adam: And you’re going to the gallows, nude family.
[1:09:23 – 1:09:24] Erik: Yeah, I’d take them to the gallows.
[1:09:24 – 1:09:27] Adam: We’re going to hang you right next to a blue duck, you son of a bitch.
[1:09:29 – 1:09:32] Adam: Our third… Yeah, that’s not good.
[1:09:33 – 1:09:33] Adam: Our third…
[1:09:38 – 1:09:40] Adam: That was my first trip to the Vento.
[1:09:40 – 1:09:43] Adam: Looking forward to coming back and doing some of the hiking trails.
[1:09:44 – 1:09:46] Adam: And looking forward to the 2025 season.
[1:09:47 – 1:09:50] Adam: In the meantime, I’m loving the Tumbalone TCC content.
[1:09:50 – 1:09:51] Adam: Keep it up, boys.
[1:09:51 – 1:09:51] Adam: Thank you very much.
[1:09:53 – 1:09:56] Adam: And I’m glad you at least got to swim in the lower falls.
[1:09:57 – 1:09:57] Erik: Yeah.
[1:09:58 – 1:09:59] Erik: There’s nudes everywhere.
[1:09:59 – 1:10:02] Erik: Upper falls, lower falls, mid falls.
[1:10:02 – 1:10:04] Erik: The falls I didn’t even know existed.
[1:10:04 – 1:10:05] Erik: Packed with nudes.
[1:10:06 – 1:10:08] Erik: Portage Runner, 27 days ago.
[1:10:08 – 1:10:09] Erik: Now we’re doing it.
[1:10:09 – 1:10:11] Erik: Now we’re getting down there.
[1:10:11 – 1:10:17] Erik: Two comments left and we will never speak of any of this ever again.
[1:10:18 – 1:10:20] Adam: Especially the nudes.
[1:10:20 – 1:10:21] Erik: Especially the nudes.
[1:10:22 – 1:10:23] Erik: My God, the nudes.
[1:10:24 – 1:10:25] Erik: Portage Runner.
[1:10:26 – 1:10:32] Erik: Enjoyed a great year in the park, venturing in five times before the calendar churned.
[1:10:32 – 1:10:43] Erik: While two week-long trips were planned from Permit Day 2024, the other three trips were more of the impromptu variety, which I hope becomes more of a regular occurrence.
[1:10:45 – 1:10:47] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, give me the impromptu.
[1:10:47 – 1:10:48] Erik: Yes, chef.
[1:10:49 – 1:10:52] Erik: In between Permit Day and impromptu.
[1:10:53 – 1:10:54] Erik: That’s kind of where I come down.
[1:10:55 – 1:10:59] Erik: One, Memorial Day weekend with my boys, 8 and 10, on Sawbill and Alton.
[1:11:00 – 1:11:02] Erik: This was their second trip with me into the park.
[1:11:02 – 1:11:08] Erik: Highlights included great weather, minimal bugs, and my oldest catching his first B-dub walleye.
[1:11:09 – 1:11:09] Erik: Huzzah.
[1:11:09 – 1:11:10] Erik: Huzzah.
[1:11:10 – 1:11:10] Erik: Huzzah.
[1:11:12 – 1:11:21] Erik: Week out of Kawishui Lake entry point with my annual since high school group up to Malberg, River Lake, and Fish Dance.
[1:11:22 – 1:11:22] Erik: All right.
[1:11:22 – 1:11:23] Erik: Pictos?
[1:11:23 – 1:11:24] Erik: I hope so.
[1:11:24 – 1:11:28] Erik: Despite many years of tripping in canoe country, this is my first time seeing pictographs.
[1:11:29 – 1:11:30] Erik: Now we’re talking.
[1:11:30 – 1:11:30] Erik: Here we go.
[1:11:32 – 1:11:33] Erik: Three.
[1:11:33 – 1:11:35] Erik: That’s orb country over there.
[1:11:35 – 1:11:35] Erik: That is.
[1:11:35 – 1:11:36] Adam: Now we’re talking.
[1:11:36 – 1:11:36] Adam: Yeah.
[1:11:36 – 1:11:37] Adam: Do you see any orbs?
[1:11:38 – 1:11:39] Erik: No comments on orbs.
[1:11:39 – 1:11:39] Erik: Three.
[1:11:39 – 1:11:40] Erik: Week entering…
[1:11:41 – 1:11:53] Erik: Through the Moose River, end of July, and making the lollipop loop through Nina, Agnes, Oyster, Gay Bay, LLC, and back out.
[1:11:54 – 1:11:54] Erik: No pocket, though.
[1:11:55 – 1:11:56] Erik: Missed out on the pocket.
[1:11:56 – 1:11:59] Erik: Missed out on Toadie and the Squeak Gang.
[1:12:01 – 1:12:05] Adam: Oh, Toadies out there somewhere riding the frog ferry for a penny.
[1:12:05 – 1:12:08] Erik: Nobody stops in and ever checks on the Queet Gang.
[1:12:08 – 1:12:11] Erik: See how they do it.
[1:12:12 – 1:12:15] Erik: Hit the sites along the way, including the Pictos on Rocky and LLC.
[1:12:15 – 1:12:16] Erik: All right.
[1:12:16 – 1:12:19] Erik: Stone Chairs on Gay Bay on Equette.
[1:12:20 – 1:12:22] Erik: Warrior Hill and the Moose River Vista.
[1:12:22 – 1:12:23] Erik: Such a good trip.
[1:12:24 – 1:12:24] Erik: It is.
[1:12:24 – 1:12:27] Erik: That’s top five.
[1:12:27 – 1:12:46] Erik: That’s got to be up there in terms of like if you’re going to do an easy, not easy, but like it’s easy to point to that trip as like you want to just get the Boundary Waters feeling, the vibe, and have things along the way to like keep first-timers or kids entertained.
[1:12:46 – 1:12:48] Erik: There’s something along the way of that whole loop.
[1:12:49 – 1:12:50] Erik: That one’s medium chunky.
[1:12:51 – 1:12:51] Erik: Yeah.
[1:12:51 – 1:12:55] Erik: Best fishing, and then obviously fishing, best fishing I’ve ever had in the B-Dub on this trip.
[1:12:56 – 1:13:00] Erik: Four, end of September, long weekend on Seagull with the wife and kiddos.
[1:13:01 – 1:13:04] Erik: Two days of glass on Seagull was a welcome surprise.
[1:13:04 – 1:13:12] Erik: It was almost too hot during the day, but given the calm waters, no bugs, few people, and cool nights, I wasn’t about to complain.
[1:13:14 – 1:13:14] SPEAKER_01: There you go.
[1:13:15 – 1:13:15] SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
[1:13:15 – 1:13:16] SPEAKER_01: Five.
[1:13:16 – 1:13:17] SPEAKER_01: End of December.
[1:13:17 – 1:13:20] Erik: Snowshoe day trip to the Hegman Lake pictographs.
[1:13:21 – 1:13:21] Adam: Good choice.
[1:13:21 – 1:13:22] Adam: Yeah.
[1:13:22 – 1:13:25] SPEAKER_01: Shout out to the Winter Maker episode for the idea.
[1:13:26 – 1:13:35] Erik: And yes, if you’re counting, I managed to make it to four different lakes with pictographs this season after having never seen any, which was a real treat.
[1:13:36 – 1:13:38] Erik: Here’s to another great season of 2025.
[1:13:38 – 1:13:39] Erik: Safe travels.
[1:13:39 – 1:13:42] Adam: Here’s a regular modern day Furtman over here.
[1:13:42 – 1:13:43] Erik: Yeah.
[1:13:44 – 1:13:46] Adam: Magic on the rocks with this one.
[1:13:46 – 1:13:49] Erik: Yeah, he’s crossing them off.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:51] Adam: Finding new ones.
[1:13:51 – 1:13:57] Adam: You didn’t really offer this up, but what did you take away from the experience of seeing those?
[1:13:57 – 1:13:58] Adam: Thoughts on meaning.
[1:13:59 – 1:14:00] Adam: What does it all mean?
[1:14:01 – 1:14:03] Adam: More importantly, what does it mean to you?
[1:14:03 – 1:14:05] Erik: I don’t remember what the ones on Rocky were like.
[1:14:05 – 1:14:09] Adam: That was like a little cross with indecipherable markage.
[1:14:10 – 1:14:11] Adam: Tally marks.
[1:14:11 – 1:14:12] Adam: Made by children, maybe.
[1:14:14 – 1:14:19] Adam: Just what’s left from something that was much grander.
[1:14:20 – 1:14:20] Erik: That’s gone now.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:22] Adam: That’s gone now.
[1:14:25 – 1:14:51] Adam: uh last comment with the red lantern and uh thank you and welcome to the show demon squirrel 22 nine days ago holy schmoly two boxes of wine we only had time for one overnight trip to the bwca this year but it was a special one an 85 year old friend heard my friend jeff and i talking about our last trip he told us he had never had a chance to travel in the
[1:14:54 – 1:14:57] Adam: Jeff and I decided our mission would be to make that happen.
[1:14:58 – 1:15:02] Adam: Our friend wanted to avoid bugs, so we planned a September trip.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:07] Adam: We would keep it simple, with easy access to the entry point and one simple portage.
[1:15:07 – 1:15:13] Adam: Unfortunately, in a September of wonderfully warm and dry weather, we picked the three coldest, wettest, and windiest days.
[1:15:14 – 1:15:28] Adam: We had a party of five, 185, 170, who had maybe been in the BWCA on a day trip decades earlier, a 40-something who had canoed a bit growing up in Arkansas, but not much since then, and then Jeff and I.
[1:15:29 – 1:15:34] Adam: We picked up a Northstar B19 from Sawbill Outfitters and had Jeff’s Min 2.
[1:15:35 – 1:15:42] Adam: The rain started as we watched the obligatory Forest Service video, and a strong wind from the north was barreling down Sawbill as we put in.
[1:15:42 – 1:15:45] Adam: Fortunately, it was a quick paddle of the portage to Alton.
[1:15:46 – 1:15:52] Adam: A quick stroll on the short path gave the guys a chance to say that they had portaged in the BWCA.
[1:15:53 – 1:16:03] Adam: The first campsites sheltered from the north wind on Alton were occupied, so not wanting to spend too much time on the windy lake with novice paddlers, we grabbed the next spot we found on the west side.
[1:16:04 – 1:16:09] Adam: We spent two nights at that campsite, windy and cold the first two days, but the skies gradually cleared.
[1:16:10 – 1:16:12] Adam: Despite the weather, everyone had a good time.
[1:16:12 – 1:16:17] Adam: We ate well and had some special times and conversations just sitting around the campfire.
[1:16:17 – 1:16:19] Adam: The stars were glorious the last night.
[1:16:21 – 1:16:26] Adam: The last morning was calm and sunny, and our 85-year-old friend really wanted a chance to paddle.
[1:16:26 – 1:16:31] Adam: So instead of a duffer in the middle seat on the B19, he got the bow on Jeff’s Min 2.
[1:16:32 – 1:16:39] Adam: I think it might be hard to match the feeling I had watching the joy spread across his face as he paddled out of the BWCA.
[1:16:41 – 1:16:46] Adam: That is quite the story, and I think a great place to leave this conversation.
[1:16:46 – 1:16:47] Adam: Perfect ending.
[1:16:47 – 1:16:48] Adam: Beautiful.
[1:16:48 – 1:16:51] Adam: Thank you, DemonSquirrel22, for the eloquent prose.
[1:16:52 – 1:16:52] Erik: Yeah.
[1:16:52 – 1:16:55] Adam: What was your highlight of 2024?
[1:16:55 – 1:16:56] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:17:09 – 1:17:11] Adam: I thought you were going to say the Space Needle for sure.
[1:17:12 – 1:17:14] Erik: Oh, just the whole year?
[1:17:14 – 1:17:17] Erik: I was thinking closer to like…
[1:17:17 – 1:17:25] Adam: I ultimately meant it as what was your highlight of the Boundary Waters for 2024, but I purposely left it wide open for you.
[1:17:25 – 1:17:28] Erik: Yeah, well, if it’s all encompassing, yeah.
[1:17:28 – 1:17:30] Erik: I mean, space noodles up there.
[1:17:30 – 1:17:35] Adam: Can’t believe we allowed us to paddle a canoe on the top of the observation deck like that.
[1:17:35 – 1:17:35] Adam: It was crazy.
[1:17:35 – 1:17:37] Erik: Yeah, no, I don’t…
[1:17:37 – 1:17:39] Erik: I mean, it was just the one trip.
[1:17:41 – 1:17:41] Adam: It was.
[1:17:42 – 1:17:42] Adam: It was a great one.
[1:17:43 – 1:17:48] Erik: It was, and I’m looking to rectify that in many ways, 2025.
[1:17:48 – 1:17:56] Erik: 2024 might go down in history as my least time spent in a canoe.
[1:17:57 – 1:18:03] Adam: Yeah, that’s true, but it was amazing getting to paddle the Frost River with you.
[1:18:03 – 1:18:04] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[1:18:04 – 1:18:15] Adam: After all these times of talking about it and having done that trip with other people to get to do that trip, and it was inaudible at the last second in which we did not have a permit on permit day for that.
[1:18:16 – 1:18:25] Adam: Just managed to get the right one at the right time based on the wind forecast, and ultimately got to get that sweet spot on Frost after…
[1:18:27 – 1:18:31] Adam: And we’re having a look at a couple other ones and paddling on, which we normally don’t do, I’d say.
[1:18:31 – 1:18:33] Adam: Yeah, usually not.
[1:18:33 – 1:18:36] Adam: We usually are just, we pick a campsite and stop.
[1:18:36 – 1:18:44] Adam: But that day, we were a little choosy, and I’m glad we were because it ended up with us on Frost 1 with the Raven’s Nest.
[1:18:45 – 1:18:45] Adam: Raven Camp.
[1:18:45 – 1:18:51] Adam: And it was a pretty cool campsite, and that was my highlight of the year for the Boundary Waters for sure.
[1:18:51 – 1:19:00] Erik: Yeah, I mean, I don’t really have anything else to measure up against it, but not to say that that doesn’t really take away from it at all.
[1:19:00 – 1:19:02] Erik: That was a great trip.
[1:19:02 – 1:19:13] Erik: Looking forward to probably putting together a trip not much unlike that one in terms of finding a permit that’s available based on weather.
[1:19:14 – 1:19:16] Erik: there’s always permits out there, you know?
[1:19:17 – 1:19:19] Adam: Well, they become available every day.
[1:19:19 – 1:19:36] Adam: You just got to be, once you figure out what day looks good for you and your group and the weather, and then you can kind of dial it in and go with whatever comes your way, which I think really, you know, dials into what we’re all about here in Tomahawk.
[1:19:36 – 1:19:36] Adam: Yeah.
[1:19:37 – 1:19:37] Adam: And, uh,
[1:19:38 – 1:19:55] Adam: going with the flow and uh you know i’m sure we’ll find something for june like we did with the frost river trip that sort of just came out of nowhere and was a true delight i’m a little saddened we were like a week late on getting to just ride the rapids over the top of all the beaver dams below pencil
[1:19:55 – 1:19:56] Adam: Just a little late, but.
[1:19:56 – 1:20:05] Adam: But, you know, we were able to, like, dam ram a couple of them bad boys, and we made pretty quick work of the Frost River once we got going through it.
[1:20:05 – 1:20:10] Adam: So, yeah, that was a pretty great trip and quite the route.
[1:20:10 – 1:20:23] Adam: So all the stories that people were sending in were pretty magical, though, and it’s one of those magical things about Tumble Home, getting to live vicariously through our friends in the park.
[1:20:23 – 1:20:34] Erik: Greatly appreciate, yeah, all of you well thought out, lengthy, wordy, girth-wordy responses from all of your travels from last year.
[1:20:35 – 1:20:36] Erik: Then that’s all over now.
[1:20:39 – 1:20:40] SPEAKER_01: We’re only looking forward.
[1:20:42 – 1:20:47] Erik: So yeah, basically now it’s transitioning into where are you going in 2025?
[1:20:47 – 1:20:49] Erik: But we probably won’t get there for a few months.
[1:20:50 – 1:20:50] Adam: We’ll wait.
[1:20:50 – 1:20:51] Adam: It’s going to be a bit.
[1:20:51 – 1:20:55] Adam: It’s transitioning into dog sledding season is what it’s doing.
[1:20:55 – 1:20:59] Adam: So quick plug that Fantasy at Ditterod is live.
[1:21:00 – 1:21:02] Adam: Go ahead and spend your gold nuggets wisely.
[1:21:03 – 1:21:08] Adam: We’ll have another episode out on Sunday, which will be the beginning of the Bear Grease.
[1:21:09 – 1:21:19] Adam: And, of course, we’ll be out on the trail handing out corndogs and beer to all mushers that make it to our post and hospitality stop.
[1:21:20 – 1:21:23] Adam: If you have time, the Fantasy Mushing is open.
[1:21:23 – 1:21:29] Adam: Fantasy Iditarod is now a staple of the Tumlum community, and go ahead and pick your team.
[1:21:29 – 1:21:32] Adam: There’s not that many teams in the Iditarod this year.
[1:21:33 – 1:21:40] Adam: There is quite a few teams in the Bear Grease, but there’s not that many teams in the Bear Grease that have won it.
[1:21:40 – 1:21:45] Adam: So it’s going to be an interesting year for both races, and they normally don’t occur at the same time.
[1:21:46 – 1:21:49] Adam: So it’s going to be a lot of dog sledding coming up here.
[1:21:49 – 1:21:50] Erik: It’s exciting.
[1:21:50 – 1:21:51] Adam: It is exciting.
[1:21:52 – 1:21:56] Adam: But, yeah, there’s not that many teams in Iditarod, so you normally get, like, way more gold nuggets to spend.
[1:21:57 – 1:22:07] Adam: And so it’s a lot of rookies and $2,000 teams, 2,000 nugget teams, and very few teams that are very spendy.
[1:22:08 – 1:22:12] Adam: So it’s an odd year in Fantasy Iditarod and also an odd route.
[1:22:12 – 1:22:16] Adam: They, due to complete lack of snow on the backside of the Alaska range, have –
[1:22:17 – 1:22:44] Adam: move this start to fairbanks and they’re going to just run the river pretty much all the way to you know the cleat um and they do the caltech portage so it’s like a huge river race and then a mild portage mild it’s a very difficult portage over to over the cleat and then uh running the coast it’s gonna be a weird year for the for the iditarod but get in there and spend your gold nuggets wisely and i will say no more
[1:22:45 – 1:22:45] Erik: Yeah.
[1:22:45 – 1:22:53] Erik: You can get online and purchase your physical copies of the Willem Dafoe classic Togo.
[1:22:53 – 1:22:55] Adam: I cannot believe they took Togo off of Disney Plus.
[1:22:55 – 1:22:57] Erik: It’s not on Disney Plus anymore streaming.
[1:22:57 – 1:22:58] Adam: Ridiculous.
[1:22:58 – 1:22:58] Adam: Yeah.
[1:22:59 – 1:23:00] Adam: Their best movie they ever made.
[1:23:00 – 1:23:01] Adam: Disney?
[1:23:01 – 1:23:02] Adam: Not on Disney Plus.
[1:23:02 – 1:23:02] Adam: Yeah.
[1:23:03 – 1:23:04] Adam: The best Disney movie ever made.
[1:23:04 – 1:23:05] Adam: Togo.
[1:23:05 – 1:23:06] Erik: That’s a great comment.
[1:23:06 – 1:23:06] Erik: Yeah.
[1:23:06 – 1:23:07] Erik: That’s great.
[1:23:07 – 1:23:09] Adam: I’ll stand by that until the day that I die.
[1:23:09 – 1:23:11] Erik: The hottest take of all time.
[1:23:11 – 1:23:13] Erik: Togo is the greatest Disney film ever made.
[1:23:13 – 1:23:15] Adam: Balto’s a phony.
[1:23:15 – 1:23:16] Adam: That’s true.
[1:23:16 – 1:23:18] Adam: Togo’s real.
[1:23:18 – 1:23:19] Adam: Yes, also true.
[1:23:19 – 1:23:20] Adam: Thank you.
[1:23:20 – 1:23:21] Adam: Thank you.
[1:23:21 – 1:23:21] Adam: Drop the mic.
[1:23:21 – 1:23:22] Adam: Good night.
[1:23:22 – 1:23:26] Adam: Really?
[1:23:26 – 1:23:26] Erik: Really.
[1:23:35 – 1:23:36] UNKNOWN: Bye.
[1:23:36 – 1:23:37] UNKNOWN: Bye.
[1:24:12 – 1:24:15] SPEAKER_03: Shoo-bee-bop, shoo-bee-bop, bop, bop, bop-a-doo.
[1:24:15 – 1:24:19] SPEAKER_03: Shoo-bee-bop, shoo-bee-bop, bop, bop, bop-a-doo.
