[0:01:31 – 0:01:32] Admiral Geary: Are you actually recording?
[0:01:35 – 0:01:36] Admiral Geary: This is Admiral Geary.
[0:01:36 – 0:01:37] SPEAKER_03: We’re live in the field.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:39] SPEAKER_03: How is it?
[0:01:39 – 0:01:40] SPEAKER_03: You bit off the corners.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:42] SPEAKER_03: You haven’t even had any of the combo goop.
[0:01:42 – 0:01:44] Admiral Geary: I don’t want to burn my mouth.
[0:01:44 – 0:01:47] Admiral Geary: I don’t want stalagmites, stalagtites, you know?
[0:01:47 – 0:01:48] SPEAKER_03: Stalag bites.
[0:01:49 – 0:01:50] SPEAKER_03: Stalag bites.
[0:01:51 – 0:01:52] SPEAKER_03: Are you just going to keep flirting with it?
[0:01:53 – 0:01:55] SPEAKER_03: Just a little nibble on the side.
[0:01:56 – 0:01:57] SPEAKER_05: Full send.
[0:01:57 – 0:01:58] SPEAKER_05: He’s edging the biter.
[0:01:58 – 0:02:01] SPEAKER_05: There it is.
[0:02:01 – 0:02:01] SPEAKER_03: How is it?
[0:02:01 – 0:02:03] SPEAKER_03: Did the dad bod ruin it?
[0:02:05 – 0:02:05] Hoplicious: Excellent.
[0:02:05 – 0:02:08] SPEAKER_05: If anyone knows how to make biters, it’s probably a dad bod.
[0:02:10 – 0:02:12] SPEAKER_05: Though I haven’t made pizza biters in so goddamn long.
[0:02:14 – 0:02:15] SPEAKER_03: The only time I eat them anymore is out here.
[0:02:15 – 0:02:17] Hoplicious: Alright, we’re good on fire.
[0:02:20 – 0:02:21] SPEAKER_03: Give me the stalactites.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:23] SPEAKER_03: Not quite.
[0:02:23 – 0:02:24] SPEAKER_03: I mean, it’s fine.
[0:02:24 – 0:02:28] SPEAKER_03: You’re not eating biters correctly if you’re not having to do the rapid inhale a little bit.
[0:02:30 – 0:02:32] SPEAKER_05: I will never understand people who microwave biters.
[0:02:33 – 0:02:34] SPEAKER_05: Or chicken nuggets.
[0:02:34 – 0:02:37] SPEAKER_05: Or anything that’s just, like, objectively better.
[0:02:38 – 0:02:41] SPEAKER_03: If you want stalagmites, the thing to do is bagel bites.
[0:02:42 – 0:02:44] SPEAKER_05: Cap’n Crunch will do it to you, too.
[0:02:44 – 0:02:46] SPEAKER_05: Eat your Cap’n Crunch really fast before it sogs out.
[0:02:47 – 0:02:49] SPEAKER_05: I get the stalagmites on my tongue from sour Skittles.
[0:02:51 – 0:02:52] SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, yeah.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:54] SPEAKER_05: Turns into sandpaper.
[0:02:55 – 0:02:56] SPEAKER_05: What is that?
[0:02:58 – 0:03:00] SPEAKER_03: Mango, pineapple.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:03] SPEAKER_03: I love how he’s just like hole fisting that bottle.
[0:03:07 – 0:03:09] SPEAKER_03: Mango pineapple hot sauce?
[0:03:09 – 0:03:11] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it’s from the sleeping giant.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:12] SPEAKER_03: What’s the hot from?
[0:03:12 – 0:03:14] SPEAKER_03: I mean, is there habanero?
[0:03:14 – 0:03:14] SPEAKER_03: Habanero.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:15] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sweet pepper.
[0:03:16 – 0:03:19] Hoplicious: But it tastes like it’s pineapple, yellow belt peppers,
[0:03:20 – 0:03:27] Hoplicious: Onion, distilled vinegar, habaneros, organic cane sugar, lime juice, sea salt, garlic, canola oil, ale.
[0:03:28 – 0:03:28] Hoplicious: Yeah.
[0:03:29 – 0:03:30] SPEAKER_06: Ale?
[0:03:32 – 0:03:35] Hoplicious: Yeah, they use some IPA from some brewery.
[0:03:35 – 0:03:38] Hoplicious: I think Sleeping Giant Brewery or something like that.
[0:03:38 – 0:03:42] SPEAKER_03: This tumble homie trip sponsored by Heartbeat Hot Sauce.
[0:03:42 – 0:03:42] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[0:03:43 – 0:03:44] SPEAKER_03: Really good.
[0:03:47 – 0:03:50] SPEAKER_03: Man, the nutrition information is just zeros across the board.
[0:03:50 – 0:03:51] SPEAKER_03: This gives you nothing.
[0:03:54 – 0:03:57] SPEAKER_03: Except for four milligrams of vitamin C. Yeah, that’s negative calories.
[0:03:57 – 0:03:59] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it’s mostly pineapple.
[0:04:08 – 0:04:10] Admiral Geary: Was that from the co-op, or did you go to Thunder Bay?
[0:04:11 – 0:04:12] Hoplicious: No, it’s pretty…
[0:04:13 – 0:04:15] Hoplicious: I got it at World Market.
[0:04:16 – 0:04:16] Hoplicious: Oh.
[0:04:16 – 0:04:17] Hoplicious: Yeah, they sell it.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:20] Hoplicious: And you can just buy it on Amazon, too.
[0:04:20 – 0:04:22] SPEAKER_05: Oh, you’re putting it right in the pouch.
[0:04:22 – 0:04:23] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right in the pouch.
[0:04:24 – 0:04:27] SPEAKER_05: This kind of looks like the Papa John’s sauce.
[0:04:27 – 0:04:28] SPEAKER_05: It’s not super hot either.
[0:04:29 – 0:04:33] SPEAKER_03: I recently discovered that Papa John’s is still a thing.
[0:04:33 – 0:04:40] SPEAKER_03: It’s so much still a thing that there’s a sign that just went up where I live that says Papa John’s coming soon.
[0:04:41 – 0:04:42] SPEAKER_03: Wow, they’re still building them?
[0:04:42 – 0:04:43] SPEAKER_03: Right, yeah, a new one.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:46] SPEAKER_03: As if anybody out there is hyped for Papa John’s.
[0:04:47 – 0:04:52] Hoplicious: I went to a Noodle’s once during COVID and I walk up to the counter and he’s like, sorry sir, we’re only doing online orders.
[0:04:53 – 0:04:56] Hoplicious: But I’m like, I’m right at the point of sale.
[0:04:56 – 0:05:00] Hoplicious: You just take out your phone and order?
[0:05:00 – 0:05:08] Hoplicious: No, I had to download the Noodle’s app, like create an account and then order my food and then sit down.
[0:05:08 – 0:05:09] Hoplicious: I don’t know why I just didn’t leave.
[0:05:10 – 0:05:19] Admiral Geary: That’s one of Van Neistat, Casey Neistat’s brother, that’s one of his rules is if I have to download an app to order my food, just no.
[0:05:19 – 0:05:21] Admiral Geary: That’s a deep cut, Van Neistat.
[0:05:26 – 0:05:28] Erik: Okay, I’ll ask this question.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:40] Admiral Geary: When you guys make spaghetti, do you cook the meat, put the sauce in the meat, boil the noodles, and then do you combine and fry it all together before you serve it?
[0:05:41 – 0:05:41] Admiral Geary: No.
[0:05:42 – 0:05:43] SPEAKER_06: Depends.
[0:05:43 – 0:05:44] Admiral Geary: So you do sometimes?
[0:05:46 – 0:05:48] SPEAKER_06: I mean, I put it back in the…
[0:05:49 – 0:05:50] Admiral Geary: So you combine it all?
[0:05:50 – 0:05:52] SPEAKER_06: I put it back in the pan I was cooking it on.
[0:05:52 – 0:05:55] Admiral Geary: But you don’t, like, actively then fry them together?
[0:05:55 – 0:05:57] Admiral Geary: You dump the meat into the water.
[0:05:57 – 0:05:59] SPEAKER_03: Okay, what is the proposed order of operations?
[0:06:00 – 0:06:03] Admiral Geary: So, the order of operation at the Admiral Geary house is…
[0:06:05 – 0:06:12] Admiral Geary: You cook the meat, build your sauce in with the meat there, and then you boil your noodles separate, right?
[0:06:13 – 0:06:18] Admiral Geary: And then you have a new skillet that you combine the hot…
[0:06:18 – 0:06:19] Admiral Geary: Wait, why aren’t we done already?
[0:06:21 – 0:06:24] SPEAKER_03: Like, you’ve made the sauce, the noodles, now you put them together and eat them.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:25] SPEAKER_03: Why is there another step here?
[0:06:25 – 0:06:30] Admiral Geary: So you further infuse the noodles and the sauce and all of it together in a pan.
[0:06:30 – 0:06:32] SPEAKER_03: Okay, you don’t fully cook them separately, right?
[0:06:32 – 0:06:35] SPEAKER_03: No, they’re cooked, like you could serve it at the point.
[0:06:35 – 0:06:36] SPEAKER_03: How mushy are your noodles when they’re done?
[0:06:36 – 0:06:37] Admiral Geary: They’re not mushy.
[0:06:37 – 0:06:38] Admiral Geary: Okay.
[0:06:38 – 0:06:39] Admiral Geary: They’re crispy.
[0:06:40 – 0:06:41] Admiral Geary: I wouldn’t say they’re crispy either.
[0:06:41 – 0:06:44] Admiral Geary: They’re just like infused with the flavor.
[0:06:44 – 0:06:46] Admiral Geary: Like you, I don’t know, saute them together.
[0:06:46 – 0:06:49] Admiral Geary: I mean, I feel like they get pretty infused just sitting there.
[0:06:49 – 0:06:51] SPEAKER_06: You need to step it up and put it in a pressure cooker.
[0:06:52 – 0:06:53] SPEAKER_06: Push the sauce into the noodle.
[0:06:53 – 0:06:55] SPEAKER_03: You guys ever air fry your spaghetti?
[0:06:57 – 0:06:58] SPEAKER_03: I sous vide my spaghetti.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:08] SPEAKER_06: I was in a meme group for a while that we were like the meme of… No talking about other meme groups in front of the homies?
[0:07:08 – 0:07:09] SPEAKER_06: The meme of the week was cold brew?
[0:07:11 – 0:07:15] Admiral Geary: This is a community, not a meme group.
[0:07:15 – 0:07:17] Admiral Geary: Please put that as a cold open.
[0:07:17 – 0:07:26] SPEAKER_06: Someone made cold brew spaghetti by just leaving noodles in water for like a day and then ate it as a meme.
[0:07:26 – 0:07:27] SPEAKER_06: It was not…
[0:07:27 – 0:07:28] SPEAKER_06: It seemed…
[0:07:28 – 0:07:32] SPEAKER_06: They said it wasn’t, like, as bad as you would think.
[0:07:32 – 0:07:34] SPEAKER_03: Sounds like they were also saying that it was still bad.
[0:07:35 – 0:07:36] SPEAKER_03: What did they do again?
[0:07:36 – 0:07:37] SPEAKER_03: They soaked…
[0:07:37 – 0:07:40] SPEAKER_06: They just soaked the noodles in water for, like, a day.
[0:07:40 – 0:07:42] SPEAKER_06: And then… Like, in cool water.
[0:07:43 – 0:07:43] SPEAKER_06: And then ate it.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:44] SPEAKER_06: Right.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:47] SPEAKER_06: Pasta… Oh, I was thinking, like, a coffee connection.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:48] Admiral Geary: Is it that a…
[0:07:48 – 0:07:51] Admiral Geary: So, when you buy pasta at the store…
[0:07:51 – 0:07:53] SPEAKER_03: It’s not dehydrated pasta.
[0:07:53 – 0:07:55] SPEAKER_03: It still needs to be cooked.
[0:07:55 – 0:07:56] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it’s dried.
[0:07:56 – 0:07:57] SPEAKER_03: So…
[0:07:58 – 0:08:04] Admiral Geary: But isn’t there an Appalachian Trail strategy with, like, ramen or something where you do cold soak it?
[0:08:04 – 0:08:07] SPEAKER_03: Dude, those thru-hikers that do cold soaks are psychopaths.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:11] SPEAKER_03: It’s not my favorite kind of soaking.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:14] SPEAKER_05: Oh, no.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:15] SPEAKER_05: Are you a Mormon?
[0:08:16 – 0:08:18] Admiral Geary: Number three.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:21] SPEAKER_03: The sun is way too high for that.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:27] Hoplicious: We ate 100 biters.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:28] Hoplicious: 130?
[0:08:28 – 0:08:32] Hoplicious: No, that was just 100.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:34] Hoplicious: There was one bigger bag.
[0:08:34 – 0:08:39] SPEAKER_03: So they make a 100 pack, and then they looked at that and said, we’ve got to give people an option for 30 more.
[0:08:42 – 0:08:45] SPEAKER_03: How many are in the smaller pack?
[0:08:45 – 0:08:45] SPEAKER_03: 50?
[0:08:45 – 0:08:47] Hoplicious: Yeah, 50 milligrams.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:59] SPEAKER_03: So what they’re saying is somebody bought a 100 pack and they want more, but they don’t want 150 from the combination of just buying a big one and a small one.
[0:08:59 – 0:09:01] SPEAKER_06: Maybe that’s why the 30 is there.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:04] Hoplicious: I didn’t know those were combo.
[0:09:04 – 0:09:04] Hoplicious: I forgot.
[0:09:04 – 0:09:07] Hoplicious: That just tasted like every other biter I’ve ever had.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:07] Hoplicious: They all taste the same.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:09] SPEAKER_03: They taste exactly the same.
[0:09:09 – 0:09:12] Hoplicious: They probably all come out of a different machine and they just put them in different boxes.
[0:09:13 – 0:09:14] Hoplicious: Yeah, the face plant.
[0:09:15 – 0:09:16] Hoplicious: I don’t trust.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:18] Hoplicious: I don’t want buffalo chicken biters up here.
[0:09:22 – 0:09:23] SPEAKER_06: Pork chicken.
[0:09:24 – 0:09:27] SPEAKER_06: Super nitrated beef.
[0:09:28 – 0:09:29] SPEAKER_08: Amen.
[0:09:29 – 0:09:30] SPEAKER_08: Hallelujah.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:35] Admiral Geary: The glorious sacrament of the tumble, homie.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:06] Hoplicious: Cook the biters too, you’re like Chef Boyardee.
[0:10:07 – 0:10:08] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I like cooking here.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:10] SPEAKER_03: That’s like my one thing I really enjoy doing.
[0:10:11 – 0:10:13] SPEAKER_03: Man, then he’s on every tumble homie trip.
[0:10:13 – 0:10:14] Hoplicious: Alright, there you go.
[0:10:14 – 0:10:16] Hoplicious: You just punched your ticket to Wabakini.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:18] Hoplicious: Just punched your ticket.
[0:10:23 – 0:10:23] Admiral Geary: We’re gonna…
[0:10:25 – 0:10:27] SPEAKER_03: This fry is so f***ing good.
[0:10:28 – 0:10:29] SPEAKER_05: Do I dare to?
[0:10:29 – 0:10:30] SPEAKER_05: Is there two in there?
[0:10:31 – 0:10:32] SPEAKER_03: There’s more on the fire.
[0:10:33 – 0:10:35] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there’s enough for everyone to have at least two.
[0:10:36 – 0:10:41] Hoplicious: It’s so good because I’m four portages in on Knob Creek right now.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:44] Hoplicious: God damn, you guys weren’t kidding about the sauce on the brats.
[0:10:44 – 0:10:45] Hoplicious: Right?
[0:10:45 – 0:10:47] Hoplicious: This hot sauce is the best.
[0:10:49 – 0:10:50] Admiral Geary: I was really into…
[0:10:50 – 0:10:51] SPEAKER_03: I don’t know if I got it on recording before.
[0:10:51 – 0:10:55] Hoplicious: I think this was on Hot Bloods for a season and people really liked it.
[0:10:55 – 0:10:56] SPEAKER_03: Heartbeat Hot Sauce.
[0:10:57 – 0:10:58] Hoplicious: Yeah, it’s in Thunder Bay.
[0:10:59 – 0:11:00] SPEAKER_03: Thunder Bay.
[0:11:01 – 0:11:01] Hoplicious: Thunder Box.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:03] SPEAKER_03: Pineapple habanero.
[0:11:05 – 0:11:08] SPEAKER_03: Made with sleeping giant beaver duck session IPA.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:13] SPEAKER_05: I had a little too much water, sorry gents.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:15] SPEAKER_05: They’re just taking a little while.
[0:11:16 – 0:11:17] Hoplicious: It’s fine, I’m good.
[0:11:17 – 0:11:22] Hoplicious: I’ve been dreaming about these brats since I’ve been carrying a boat through.
[0:11:22 – 0:11:26] Hoplicious: At one point, I hit a tree, it just stopped me dead.
[0:11:28 – 0:11:29] Hoplicious: Saloon bleep.
[0:11:30 – 0:11:33] SPEAKER_06: Time for the… What’s the French… Lower that boat.
[0:11:33 – 0:11:39] SPEAKER_06: Especially the P. Where you put it in the wedge of the tree and take a break.
[0:11:39 – 0:11:41] Hoplicious: Oh, I never thought of that.
[0:11:41 – 0:11:42] Hoplicious: No, it’s a French word.
[0:11:42 – 0:11:44] SPEAKER_06: It’s like taking a…
[0:11:46 – 0:11:48] SPEAKER_06: It’s something like that, yeah.
[0:11:50 – 0:11:51] Hoplicious: How do these brats…
[0:11:52 – 0:11:53] Hoplicious: They’re fine.
[0:11:53 – 0:11:54] Hoplicious: Are they Sheboygan quality?
[0:11:54 – 0:11:55] Hoplicious: They’re real bangers.
[0:11:57 – 0:12:02] SPEAKER_03: I don’t generally eat my brats with pineapple habanero hot sauce, so it changes the whole game.
[0:12:02 – 0:12:03] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it does.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:06] SPEAKER_03: I’m not even, I can’t compare.
[0:12:06 – 0:12:07] Hoplicious: Yeah.
[0:12:09 – 0:12:14] SPEAKER_03: It’s a big variable to toss into the calculations.
[0:12:16 – 0:12:23] SPEAKER_03: Also, everything tastes better when you’re camping, and then everything tastes better when you’re camping, and then you just hawked a canoe through eight portages.
[0:12:23 – 0:12:25] Hoplicious: I think I ate 18 biters last night.
[0:12:25 – 0:12:29] Hoplicious: I don’t think I could do that at home and be feeling good about myself.
[0:12:31 – 0:12:31] Hoplicious: Nope.
[0:12:34 – 0:12:35] SPEAKER_03: How many biters are you supposed to have?
[0:12:36 – 0:12:38] SPEAKER_03: I don’t know.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:40] Hoplicious: We had a hundred pack the whole day last night.
[0:12:41 – 0:12:43] Hoplicious: I mean, yeah, I’d eat the whole bag and I’d feel no shame.
[0:12:43 – 0:12:44] Hoplicious: We all averaged 20 biters.
[0:12:47 – 0:12:48] SPEAKER_03: I don’t feel like I ate 20.
[0:12:49 – 0:12:50] SPEAKER_03: I don’t remember eating 20.
[0:12:50 – 0:12:55] Hoplicious: Yeah, I don’t either.
[0:12:56 – 0:12:59] SPEAKER_03: That’s what the combination biters do to you.
[0:12:59 – 0:12:59] SPEAKER_03: You lose time.
[0:12:59 – 0:13:03] Admiral Geary: We did get visited by a red orb.
[0:13:03 – 0:13:04] Admiral Geary: Lost time.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:05] Admiral Geary: One of the signs.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:10] SPEAKER_03: Still wish I would have read the ingredients of combination biters into the record.
[0:13:11 – 0:13:12] SPEAKER_05: While we have service, you still can.
[0:13:12 – 0:13:14] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we’ll get it later.
[0:13:14 – 0:13:21] SPEAKER_03: Or we’ll just let all the tumble homies look it up themselves and be just as perplexed by what pork chicken.
[0:13:21 – 0:13:22] Admiral Geary: What episode is this?
[0:13:23 – 0:13:24] Admiral Geary: What is pork chicken?
[0:13:24 – 0:13:25] SPEAKER_03: Or chicken pork?
[0:13:25 – 0:13:26] SPEAKER_03: I don’t know.
[0:13:26 – 0:13:27] SPEAKER_03: Doesn’t matter.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:27] SPEAKER_03: Either way.
[0:13:28 – 0:13:29] SPEAKER_03: There was no comma.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:29] SPEAKER_03: They weren’t listing.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:31] Hoplicious: Yeah, pork chicken.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:33] Hoplicious: You don’t know what pork chicken is?
[0:13:33 – 0:13:38] Hoplicious: We’ve completely crossbred the pork and the chicken.
[0:13:39 – 0:13:45] Admiral Geary: Please email Popalicious and tell us what the pork chicken is.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:46] SPEAKER_05: What?
[0:13:46 – 0:13:46] SPEAKER_05: What?
[0:13:47 – 0:13:48] SPEAKER_05: Who did that?
[0:13:48 – 0:13:49] SPEAKER_05: If anyone knows the answer, send it in.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:51] SPEAKER_05: Tumblewomcast at Gmail.
[0:13:51 – 0:13:52] Admiral Geary: Sir, please contact Popalicious.
[0:13:52 – 0:13:53] SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
[0:13:53 – 0:13:53] SPEAKER_05: All right.
[0:13:53 – 0:13:55] SPEAKER_05: I thought that was a question somebody asked.
[0:13:58 – 0:13:59] Hoplicious: Only Totino’s knows the answer to this.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:07] SPEAKER_03: If any of this makes it to the podcast or the Discord or the subreddit, they’re going to have so many questions.
[0:14:07 – 0:14:08] Hoplicious: That’s why I love that picture.
[0:14:09 – 0:14:10] Hoplicious: There’s so much intrigue.
[0:14:10 – 0:14:15] Hoplicious: They’re like, oh, I totally want to go next year.
[0:14:17 – 0:14:19] Hoplicious: The pig or the dildo?
[0:14:19 – 0:14:19] Admiral Geary: All of it.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:21] Hoplicious: All of it.
[0:14:22 – 0:14:26] Hoplicious: They’re like, clearly these, whoever these people are, they’re having way too much.
[0:14:27 – 0:14:30] Hoplicious: People are sitting at home like, these guys are having so much fun right now.
[0:14:30 – 0:14:46] Hoplicious: Something just lit up.
[0:14:48 – 0:14:48] Hoplicious: Which horizon?
[0:14:49 – 0:14:50] Hoplicious: Like straight ahead.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:52] Hoplicious: There was something that just lit and then went away.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:54] Hoplicious: That was weird.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:58] SPEAKER_03: The guys across the lake have been messing with their lights.
[0:14:58 – 0:15:00] Hoplicious: No, that was way over here.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:01] Hoplicious: This was like right there.
[0:15:01 – 0:15:03] SPEAKER_03: Do you think I can see where you’re pointing?
[0:15:03 – 0:15:04] SPEAKER_03: It’s dark.
[0:15:05 – 0:15:07] Hoplicious: Like 12 o’clock.
[0:15:08 – 0:15:08] Erik: Whose clock?
[0:15:09 – 0:15:09] Hoplicious: Mine.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:13] Hoplicious: So probably, I don’t know, 1130, your clock.
[0:15:14 – 0:15:15] Hoplicious: Just look straight ahead.
[0:15:15 – 0:15:15] Hoplicious: I don’t know.
[0:15:16 – 0:15:17] Hoplicious: It was just a weird light and then went away.
[0:15:18 – 0:15:18] SPEAKER_08: Okay.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:23] SPEAKER_03: And I can still see their headlamps or something twinkling at their campsite.
[0:15:23 – 0:15:24] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:27] SPEAKER_03: If you listen, you can hear them, too.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:27] SPEAKER_03: They’re talking.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:30] SPEAKER_03: I wonder if they can hear us or if they’re… Oh, they probably can.
[0:15:30 – 0:15:31] Hoplicious: Or if they’re loud.
[0:15:31 – 0:15:34] Hoplicious: Then maybe that’s why we’re seeing their lights, because they’re like, what the…
[0:15:34 – 0:15:34] Hoplicious: Balloon bleep.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:35] Hoplicious: …is going on over there?
[0:15:35 – 0:15:37] Hoplicious: People keep talking about dill.
[0:15:43 – 0:15:44] SPEAKER_03: They got binoculars.
[0:15:44 – 0:15:48] SPEAKER_03: They were watching me and you crouching down photographing dill.
[0:15:50 – 0:15:53] Hoplicious: Are they taking a picture of hunks of weed?
[0:15:53 – 0:15:54] Hoplicious: It has to be weed.
[0:15:54 – 0:15:55] Hoplicious: They’re not taking a picture of dill.
[0:15:55 – 0:15:56] Hoplicious: Why would they be doing dill?
[0:15:57 – 0:15:58] Hoplicious: It makes no sense.
[0:16:13 – 0:16:30] Hoplicious: Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with the poor soul spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows nor victory nor defeat.
[0:16:31 – 0:16:32] Hoplicious: Teddy Roosevelt.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:39] SPEAKER_03: You just read that from memory, huh?
[0:16:40 – 0:16:41] Hoplicious: I hope so, man.
[0:16:41 – 0:16:43] Hoplicious: People talked different back then.
[0:16:43 – 0:16:45] Hoplicious: People were so much more eloquent.
[0:16:45 – 0:16:47] SPEAKER_03: You weren’t just reading that off of your phone now?
[0:16:48 – 0:16:49] Hoplicious: I absolutely was.
[0:16:51 – 0:16:55] Hoplicious: But the beer I gave Adam was dare-mighty things.
[0:16:57 – 0:16:59] Hoplicious: There’s a brewery in Eau Claire called Brewing Project.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:02] Hoplicious: And their marquee beer is called Dear Marty Things.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:06] Hoplicious: And in the brewery, on like an exposed brick wall, they have that whole quote just printed.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:10] SPEAKER_03: I don’t think Teddy was talking about beer when he… No, he definitely wasn’t.
[0:17:11 – 0:17:12] Hoplicious: He was talking about, you know…
[0:17:13 – 0:17:39] Hoplicious: doing shit like you’re dare mighty things here like shit can go wrong dare dare to visit snus box dare to yeah yeah like if we would have explained that to nine out of ten people they would have gone the fuck are you doing what is the point yeah like why why would you do that because literally it boils down to just to say we went to snus box and we didn’t
[0:17:40 – 0:17:41] SPEAKER_03: We didn’t even.
[0:17:41 – 0:17:42] Hoplicious: We didn’t even get to peerless.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:45] SPEAKER_03: I don’t believe peerless exists.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:51] Hoplicious: That tree, it’s such a great lake that somebody collapsed a tree just a block.
[0:17:52 – 0:17:53] Hoplicious: What was beyond that?
[0:17:53 – 0:17:54] Hoplicious: Did it look like there was anything beyond that?
[0:17:55 – 0:18:04] SPEAKER_03: It was, you know, canoe width channel of water sort of went around a bend, you know, teasing you with the possibility.
[0:18:04 – 0:18:05] SPEAKER_03: Of progress?
[0:18:05 – 0:18:06] SPEAKER_03: Of progress.
[0:18:06 – 0:18:10] SPEAKER_03: I’m sure only to turn the corner and find another giant pine tree across the way.
[0:18:10 – 0:18:13] Hoplicious: Yeah, there seemed like a lot of dashed hopes on that one.
[0:18:14 – 0:18:17] SPEAKER_03: That was not, that big tree that was down was a jack pine.
[0:18:17 – 0:18:18] SPEAKER_03: Was it?
[0:18:18 – 0:18:21] SPEAKER_03: How long ago did that tree die and fall?
[0:18:21 – 0:18:22] Hoplicious: Yeah.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:24] Hoplicious: Not a lot of people trying to go to Peerless.
[0:18:25 – 0:18:29] Hoplicious: There’s probably nine moose just chilling up there playing poker.
[0:18:30 – 0:18:31] Hoplicious: They’re playing Texas Hold’em.
[0:18:33 – 0:18:34] SPEAKER_03: There’s a painting for the tumble shed.
[0:18:35 – 0:18:37] SPEAKER_03: Moose playing poker, like dogs playing poker.
[0:18:38 – 0:18:39] SPEAKER_03: On Snusbox.
[0:18:40 – 0:18:42] SPEAKER_03: A noose playing moose.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:44] Hoplicious: And one of them saying, no one will believe us.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:47] Hoplicious: But another one going, who’s going to ever come here?
[0:18:50 – 0:18:54] Hoplicious: And Sasquatch are like bringing them drinks.
[0:18:55 – 0:18:56] Hoplicious: Sasquatch is the staff.
[0:18:57 – 0:18:58] Hoplicious: Squatch butlers.
[0:18:59 – 0:19:00] Hoplicious: Squatches in tuxedo.
[0:19:01 – 0:19:04] Hoplicious: Just cummerbunds, not like full tuxedos.
[0:19:04 – 0:19:07] Hoplicious: Cumberbunds in like a little tuxedo, a sleeveless tuxedo.
[0:19:09 – 0:19:10] Hoplicious: All right, who can draw that?
[0:19:15 – 0:19:17] SPEAKER_03: I think we’re getting moon burned here.
[0:19:19 – 0:19:21] SPEAKER_03: It’s still pretty crispy, though.
[0:19:21 – 0:19:26] Hoplicious: I know, with the light from… Yeah, it looks like the light that was over there is getting replaced by…
[0:19:26 – 0:19:27] SPEAKER_03: There’s a light over here.
[0:19:27 – 0:19:27] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[0:19:29 – 0:19:30] Hoplicious: You guys got the fire going?
[0:19:33 – 0:19:35] SPEAKER_05: All right.
[0:19:35 – 0:19:36] SPEAKER_05: It’s huge?
[0:19:36 – 0:19:37] Hoplicious: That sounded like sarcasm.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:41] SPEAKER_03: I don’t see any fire.
[0:19:42 – 0:19:43] SPEAKER_03: I don’t think they want a fire.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:48] SPEAKER_03: I think they were just monitoring it so it doesn’t burn the forest down.
[0:20:17 – 0:20:20] Hoplicious: Morning, day three with Hopalicious.
[0:20:22 – 0:20:23] Hoplicious: Great campsite on Parent.
[0:20:24 – 0:20:30] Hoplicious: It might be the Eric and Tori campsite from way back, episode 30-something.
[0:20:31 – 0:20:36] Hoplicious: And I think I’m sitting on the Show Your Bits rock face right now.
[0:20:38 – 0:20:40] Hoplicious: Yesterday we did the assault on Snusboxx.
[0:20:41 – 0:21:05] Hoplicious: We left camp too late and after about 3 o’clock we realized we didn’t want to be paddling back at dusk so we audibled and tried to go to Peerless but up that river there was almost immediately a big ass tree had fallen so we killed off that idea and came back to camp and had way too much fun.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:09] Hoplicious: There was an assault on Knob Creek last night.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:11] Hoplicious: I was the captain of that
[0:21:12 – 0:21:14] Hoplicious: That assault, that assault went much better.
[0:21:14 – 0:21:19] Hoplicious: And today we finally got the lake to lay down a little bit.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:21] Hoplicious: It was pretty windy the days before.
[0:21:21 – 0:21:25] Hoplicious: But today is walleye.
[0:21:27 – 0:21:32] Hoplicious: We’re gonna get some walleye and have some tacos and eat tacos and chili.
[0:21:36 – 0:21:38] SPEAKER_05: It’s like the cinnamon challenge.
[0:21:38 – 0:21:38] SPEAKER_05: Not that bad.
[0:21:41 – 0:21:43] SPEAKER_05: Hey, you cheated.
[0:21:43 – 0:21:44] SPEAKER_05: You added water.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:45] SPEAKER_05: You have to add water.
[0:21:46 – 0:21:47] SPEAKER_05: It’s mouth mixing.
[0:21:47 – 0:21:48] Admiral Geary: That’s how mouth mixing works.
[0:21:48 – 0:21:50] Admiral Geary: You just used your saliva.
[0:21:50 – 0:21:54] SPEAKER_03: Oh, you thought this whole time mouth mixing was saliva only?
[0:21:54 – 0:21:55] SPEAKER_03: Yes.
[0:21:55 – 0:21:56] Hoplicious: No.
[0:21:56 – 0:21:57] Hoplicious: You know what?
[0:21:57 – 0:21:57] Hoplicious: It’s not that bad.
[0:21:57 – 0:21:58] Hoplicious: I’m going back for another one.
[0:21:59 – 0:22:00] Hoplicious: Oh, boy.
[0:22:00 – 0:22:06] SPEAKER_03: No, you can mix the liquid and the thing in your mouth.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:07] Admiral Geary: It just tastes like scrambled eggs.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:10] Admiral Geary: It’s unnaturally Coughlin’s Yellow.
[0:22:10 – 0:22:10] SPEAKER_03: Oh, my God.
[0:22:10 – 0:22:12] SPEAKER_03: It is Coughlin’s Yellow.
[0:22:13 – 0:22:14] Admiral Geary: Is that thermoplastic?
[0:22:15 – 0:22:16] Hoplicious: It might be a powdered thermoplastic.
[0:22:16 – 0:22:17] SPEAKER_03: You got video over there?
[0:22:17 – 0:22:18] SPEAKER_03: Nice.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:20] SPEAKER_03: It’s really not bad.
[0:22:20 – 0:22:21] Hoplicious: It tastes like McDonald’s eggs.
[0:22:22 – 0:22:23] Hoplicious: That wouldn’t surprise me.
[0:22:24 – 0:22:24] Hoplicious: All right.
[0:22:24 – 0:22:25] Hoplicious: Straight out of Cargill.
[0:22:25 – 0:22:27] Hoplicious: Now I gotta wait 20 minutes for the onset.
[0:22:28 – 0:22:29] Hoplicious: Five mgs in there.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:31] Hoplicious: That is a giant silica pack.
[0:22:31 – 0:22:34] SPEAKER_06: You’re putting a plastic bag over my wicker seats.
[0:22:35 – 0:22:35] Hoplicious: Now it’s just cut.
[0:22:35 – 0:22:38] Hoplicious: Oh my god, it feels like I have braces on now.
[0:22:38 – 0:22:39] Hoplicious: It’s just all stuck to my teeth.
[0:22:44 – 0:22:45] SPEAKER_06: You’ve been stringing that thing for a while.
[0:22:45 – 0:22:48] SPEAKER_06: I had to un-string it.
[0:22:48 – 0:22:52] SPEAKER_03: For context, that was Hopalicious mouth-mixing powdered eggs.
[0:22:54 – 0:22:58] Admiral Geary: Please check the picture app for the video.
[0:22:58 – 0:22:59] SPEAKER_03: Gary’s got video.
[0:23:01 – 0:23:01] Admiral Geary: Just kidding.
[0:23:01 – 0:23:03] Admiral Geary: I won’t dox Hopalicious’ face.
[0:23:06 – 0:23:07] Admiral Geary: Just his mouth.
[0:23:07 – 0:23:08] SPEAKER_06: Just his mouth.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:09] SPEAKER_06: What’d that mouth mix do?
[0:23:09 – 0:23:10] SPEAKER_06: I recognize those lips.
[0:23:10 – 0:23:14] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you should have zoomed, like 20x zoomed just right on his mouth.
[0:23:16 – 0:23:19] Hoplicious: Slow motion it now.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:25] SPEAKER_03: He’s getting all Denethor, a little powdered egg just kind of slopping out of his mouth.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:33] Admiral Geary: Gotta race, race the Tumble Home live flag.
[0:23:34 – 0:23:35] Admiral Geary: Sounds like we got rain coming.
[0:23:36 – 0:23:38] Hoplicious: Oh, the wind’s coming too.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:39] Hoplicious: We got public.
[0:23:39 – 0:23:40] Hoplicious: Public?
[0:23:41 – 0:23:41] SPEAKER_05: Where?
[0:23:42 – 0:23:43] SPEAKER_05: No, just in general.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:45] SPEAKER_03: You can’t just call out false public.
[0:23:46 – 0:23:48] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that’s a boy who cried public.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:49] SPEAKER_05: It’s a war crime.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:57] Hoplicious: So last night, and this is by far the windiest trip I’ve ever had.
[0:23:59 – 0:24:00] Hoplicious: Sorry, I’m clipping.
[0:24:00 – 0:24:01] Hoplicious: Whatever that means.
[0:24:02 – 0:24:02] Hoplicious: But…
[0:24:03 – 0:24:09] Hoplicious: I’m gonna pass it around to see if anyone else has had a trip that was windier than this.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:13] Hoplicious: I’m not sure that’s possible, but we shall see.
[0:24:13 – 0:24:19] SPEAKER_05: Dad bod’s most windy trip was probably not this one.
[0:24:22 – 0:24:25] SPEAKER_05: But, I mean it’s been windy.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:29] SPEAKER_05: But we haven’t really had to travel, so it hasn’t really been that bad.
[0:24:30 – 0:24:32] SPEAKER_05: Fishing it was a little annoying, but it was fine.
[0:24:33 – 0:24:42] SPEAKER_05: I’ve had worse experiences with the wind when it was a must-travel day, but it was not horrible.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:43] SPEAKER_05: I’m sure people have worse stories.
[0:24:45 – 0:24:45] SPEAKER_03: I don’t know.
[0:24:45 – 0:24:46] SPEAKER_03: No big consecutive.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:48] Admiral Geary: Admiral Geary, have you had a windier trip than this?
[0:24:49 – 0:24:54] Admiral Geary: Yes, I had a windier trip the same year that the boardwalk…
[0:24:55 – 0:24:59] Admiral Geary: in Duluth got trashed by wind and waves from Lake Superior.
[0:24:59 – 0:25:03] Admiral Geary: I was on Gaskin Lake, I believe.
[0:25:03 – 0:25:07] Admiral Geary: You enter in at Horseshoe, or Poplar, Horseshoe, Gaskin.
[0:25:08 – 0:25:11] Admiral Geary: And we couldn’t have a fire.
[0:25:11 – 0:25:12] Admiral Geary: It rained the entire time.
[0:25:12 – 0:25:13] Admiral Geary: It was so windy.
[0:25:14 – 0:25:26] Admiral Geary: that the mist from the rain in the lake was coming up off of Gaskin and under my rain fly on my hammock and onto my quilt sleeping bag.
[0:25:27 – 0:25:30] Admiral Geary: That was definitely a windier time than this for me.
[0:25:31 – 0:25:33] Hoplicious: And last but not least, Mr.
[0:25:34 – 0:25:36] Hoplicious: The man, the myth, the legend, Phasmata.
[0:25:37 – 0:25:38] SPEAKER_03: Last and least.
[0:25:39 – 0:25:42] SPEAKER_03: I’ve not had a windier trip than this in the Boundary Waters.
[0:25:44 – 0:25:53] SPEAKER_03: Though in the wilderness of the UP, I definitely had a trip that I should have canceled the minute I arrived.
[0:25:55 – 0:26:02] SPEAKER_03: Instead, decided to go out solo into big ass swells in a solo canoe I had never paddled before.
[0:26:05 – 0:26:07] SPEAKER_03: And managed to at least
[0:26:09 – 0:26:17] SPEAKER_03: survive without capsizing, though I had some gear literally blow out of my canoe that I ended up having to chase downwind.
[0:26:22 – 0:26:27] Admiral Geary: I’d like to list Tumble Home Live sponsorship for this trip.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:31] Admiral Geary: First and foremost, big shout out to Knob Creek.
[0:26:33 – 0:26:38] Admiral Geary: And then we got Mini Grown THC Gummies.
[0:26:39 – 0:26:41] Admiral Geary: They’re a proud supporter of Dumble Home Live.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:46] Admiral Geary: We also have Fireball Whiskey.
[0:26:46 – 0:26:52] SPEAKER_05: Mr. 305.
[0:26:52 – 0:27:00] Admiral Geary: And the Disney Corporation for providing us with Ham, the mascot for Hog Creek.
[0:27:05 – 0:27:09] Hoplicious: Tumble Homey trip, 2024, back in the parking lot.
[0:27:10 – 0:27:10] Hoplicious: We made it.
[0:27:12 – 0:27:12] Hoplicious: Thoughts?
[0:27:14 – 0:27:14] Hoplicious: No.
[0:27:15 – 0:27:16] SPEAKER_05: Thoughts?
[0:27:16 – 0:27:18] SPEAKER_05: It was an absolute disaster.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:20] SPEAKER_05: Absolute disaster.
[0:27:34 – 0:27:34] UNKNOWN: … …
[0:28:11 – 0:28:13] Erik: It’s not a meme group.
[0:28:13 – 0:28:14] Erik: It’s a community.
[0:28:14 – 0:28:15] Adam: It is a community.
[0:28:16 – 0:28:17] Erik: Welcome to the community.
[0:28:18 – 0:28:23] Erik: The community that is a Boundary Waters podcast named Dumble Home.
[0:28:23 – 0:28:24] Erik: Hello.
[0:28:24 – 0:28:24] Erik: My name is Eric.
[0:28:25 – 0:28:26] Adam: My name is Adam.
[0:28:26 – 0:28:30] Adam: This is a community and this is a show about eating while in the park.
[0:28:30 – 0:28:30] Erik: Pretty much.
[0:28:31 – 0:28:37] Erik: We are finally, the long-laid plans are finally coming to fruition.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:43] Erik: You, the listener, now do half the work for us.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:46] Adam: Episode 267, we finally achieved the right formula here.
[0:28:46 – 0:28:55] Erik: You guys can just send in a half hour to an hour’s worth of free, easy, great content.
[0:28:55 – 0:28:56] Erik: It has to be great.
[0:28:56 – 0:28:57] Adam: It has to be great.
[0:28:57 – 0:29:01] Erik: We will hijack it and use it as our own.
[0:29:01 – 0:29:05] Adam: This has got to be like a pineapple habanero level great.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:06] Erik: Yes.
[0:29:08 – 0:29:09] Adam: Thank you for the audio, though.
[0:29:09 – 0:29:09] Adam: Yes.
[0:29:10 – 0:29:13] Adam: And I’d say you did punch your tickets to Wabakimi.
[0:29:13 – 0:29:19] Erik: Yeah, that was a hot topic, I think, with the Wabakimi lineup.
[0:29:19 – 0:29:21] Adam: Yeah, you’re all in.
[0:29:21 – 0:29:22] Adam: Yeah.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:23] Adam: You heard it here first.
[0:29:23 – 0:29:24] Adam: Yeah.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:29] Adam: Thank you for the audio, and I wish I could have been out there on Parent Lake, on the Hog Creek.
[0:29:29 – 0:29:37] Erik: Yeah, it sounded great, and it also, yeah, I’m more interested than ever to join 2025’s trip.
[0:29:37 – 0:29:39] Erik: It sounded like I needed it.
[0:29:39 – 0:29:40] Adam: Going to Long Island, it sounds like.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:42] Adam: Crossroads of the park.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:43] Adam: That’s right.
[0:29:43 – 0:29:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:29:45 – 0:29:46] Adam: You can come at it from a lot of different directions.
[0:29:46 – 0:29:48] Adam: Which way to Long Island, though?
[0:29:48 – 0:29:51] Erik: Yeah, that’s, yeah, Boy Scout in Paradise.
[0:29:51 – 0:29:53] Erik: Maybe we need to have some kind of a winter meetup.
[0:29:53 – 0:29:54] Erik: We look at maps.
[0:29:55 – 0:30:01] Adam: What if we had, like, yeah, three different subgroups all depart from different entry points and meet at Long Island?
[0:30:01 – 0:30:02] Erik: Ooh, yeah.
[0:30:02 – 0:30:03] Adam: X marks the spot.
[0:30:03 – 0:30:04] Adam: Let’s do it.
[0:30:04 – 0:30:05] Adam: Type of trip there.
[0:30:05 – 0:30:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:30:08 – 0:30:11] Adam: Everybody, no, I’m not going to say any further on what I was just going through my mind.
[0:30:12 – 0:30:13] Adam: It involved hot sauce, though.
[0:30:13 – 0:30:13] Adam: Okay.
[0:30:14 – 0:30:15] Adam: And squirting it.
[0:30:17 – 0:30:18] Adam: I’ve said too much.
[0:30:19 – 0:30:41] Adam: and squirting it x marks the spot indeed uh shout out uh phasmata peak peak peak quad c pod dirty dad bod admiral gary and hopalicious for making the uh the dream a reality yeah that was great live in the field audio is always a real treat
[0:30:41 – 0:30:44] Erik: It is, especially as we move into the dark months.
[0:30:45 – 0:30:49] Erik: Those are ever-cherished episodes.
[0:30:50 – 0:30:56] Adam: I was listening to it, and I could not figure out… Somebody’s oinking in the background.
[0:30:56 – 0:30:57] Adam: They just keep oinking.
[0:30:58 – 0:30:58] Adam: Yeah.
[0:30:58 – 0:30:58] Adam: And…
[0:30:59 – 0:31:02] Adam: And I said something to Eric about it when I got here.
[0:31:03 – 0:31:05] Adam: And he said, no, that’s the loon bleep, Adam.
[0:31:05 – 0:31:07] Adam: It took me a while to figure it out, too.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:12] Adam: So I bleeped Phasmata with the expert oink editing.
[0:31:12 – 0:31:13] Adam: That was very nice.
[0:31:13 – 0:31:16] Adam: Shout out, because I thought somebody was just oinking the whole time.
[0:31:16 – 0:31:19] Erik: I don’t even remember the last time we’ve used a loon bleep.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:21] Adam: We just cleaned up our act and stuff.
[0:31:21 – 0:31:21] Adam: Is that what we’ve done?
[0:31:22 – 0:31:23] Adam: And or we just ignore the curses.
[0:31:24 – 0:31:30] Adam: I think it’s a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B. Yeah, mostly A, but yeah.
[0:31:30 – 0:31:36] Erik: We don’t actually, yeah, we really don’t swear at all anymore, but man, wait until we get into the mezzanine tonight.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:38] Erik: Oh boy.
[0:31:38 – 0:31:40] Adam: The point break conversation.
[0:31:42 – 0:31:46] Adam: Yeah, I watched Point Break with both kids at like 5 in the morning.
[0:31:46 – 0:31:47] Adam: Nice.
[0:31:47 – 0:31:51] Adam: And halfway through the movie, I was like, I probably shouldn’t be watching this with a toddler and an infant.
[0:31:52 – 0:31:52] Erik: Yeah.
[0:31:52 – 0:31:54] Adam: There’s a lot of lewd language.
[0:31:55 – 0:31:56] Erik: Yeah, I guess, the language.
[0:31:56 – 0:31:57] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:31:57 – 0:32:02] Adam: And the 2 1ââ€ž2-year-old now, you do have to watch what you’re saying around him because he’s a little parrot.
[0:32:03 – 0:32:03] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:03 – 0:32:06] Erik: I mean, was there much in the way of…
[0:32:08 – 0:32:09] Erik: There’s a little bit of violence.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:11] Erik: It’s not that crazy.
[0:32:12 – 0:32:14] Erik: There’s really no nudity?
[0:32:15 – 0:32:15] Adam: Very little.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:17] Erik: Very little, if any.
[0:32:17 – 0:32:17] Adam: For a surfing movie.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:22] Erik: For a surfing movie where there’s multiple… Bonfires.
[0:32:22 – 0:32:27] Erik: Multiple beach bonfires and swimsuit derobings on the beach.
[0:32:28 – 0:32:30] Erik: But yeah, I guess there’s a good amount of swearing.
[0:32:31 – 0:32:32] Erik: But, you know.
[0:32:33 – 0:32:35] Erik: We’ll get into that later.
[0:32:35 – 0:32:36] Erik: This week’s TCC Point Break.
[0:32:36 – 0:32:38] Erik: What are the… How…
[0:32:39 – 0:32:56] Adam: crazy the things line up we were like just talking about waves yeah and then all of a sudden the waves are sticky out there on bell’s beach yeah stay those no spoilers the 50-year storm oh my god i think the ending of point break may have made it for me because that was wavering
[0:32:57 – 0:32:58] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:32:58 – 0:33:05] Adam: I was like, are they not going to revisit the 50-year storm thing that they dropped into the first act?
[0:33:05 – 0:33:05] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[0:33:06 – 0:33:07] Adam: And no worries.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:09] Adam: No worries.
[0:33:09 – 0:33:11] Adam: Bigelow is not going to do us dirty like that.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:11] Adam: No.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:19] Adam: I don’t know who’s the screenplay writer for this one off the top of my head, but Bigelow knows how to direct a hit.
[0:33:19 – 0:33:24] Adam: You’re not going to toss us a nugget about 50-year storms and massive waves and then not go to there by the end.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:25] Erik: No, right.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:31] Erik: One of my favorite line reads from the whole movie comes in the last two minutes.
[0:33:31 – 0:33:35] Erik: You’ll have to tune in to become a $5 a month patron to find out.
[0:33:36 – 0:33:38] Adam: Wow, you’re very savvy.
[0:33:38 – 0:33:39] Adam: Piqued the interest.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:41] Adam: Now I’ve got to find out.
[0:33:41 – 0:33:46] Adam: What is it?
[0:33:46 – 0:33:47] Adam: Point Break, though, yeah.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:48] Adam: Really good.
[0:33:48 – 0:33:50] Adam: Really, really good at 5 in the morning.
[0:33:50 – 0:34:15] Adam: i bet good the other movie i watched another like pretty like r-rated movie at five in the morning and i was like i probably shouldn’t be watching this with the kid something for tcc or just a general r rating i don’t remember i’ve been doing a lot of movie watching and like very early in the morning so i watched uh frozen this morning though that one’s pretty pretty easy on the eyes i bet compared to point break yeah i’ve never seen frozen
[0:34:16 – 0:34:19] Erik: I don’t think I have either, actually.
[0:34:19 – 0:34:20] Adam: There’s a good boat sinking in there.
[0:34:20 – 0:34:22] Erik: A good boat sinking.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:25] Adam: You might miss it, though, but it’s very incredible boat sinkage.
[0:34:25 – 0:34:32] Adam: A couple of different boat sinks in there, but mostly frozen ice, not liquid water.
[0:34:32 – 0:34:34] Adam: When the water is frozen, it’s especially sticky.
[0:34:35 – 0:34:42] Erik: I have some youngish cousins that when that movie came out, all I remember is them.
[0:34:42 – 0:34:47] Erik: Anytime we were together, like around the holidays, they were just all constantly singing the songs from that.
[0:34:47 – 0:34:51] Erik: So that’s my main relationship with that movie is the songs.
[0:34:51 – 0:34:52] Adam: The songs are pretty catchy.
[0:34:53 – 0:35:15] Adam: yeah but yeah i don’t know we just got like a really bad like children’s book that’s based on frozen that i it’s one of my books where when kid picks it out i’m like pick it everyone i hate that book it’s very if they mailed it in for sure it’s a cash grab and so i’ve just been because that book is so bad i’m like i don’t want to watch frozen even though i heard it’s a good one but it’s really good not as good as point break though
[0:35:17 – 0:35:21] Erik: Well, you’ve got two close comparisons, so I trust your judgment on that one.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:23] Adam: I’d say give it a whirl if you have access to Disney.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:25] Adam: Point Break or Frozen?
[0:35:25 – 0:35:26] Adam: Frozen, yeah.
[0:35:26 – 0:35:27] Adam: Where did you find Point Break?
[0:35:27 – 0:35:30] Adam: Point Break I watched on like Tubi or something.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:34] Adam: There’s multiple free movie sites that have a few ads on them, but free.
[0:35:35 – 0:36:00] Erik: i got a physical copy i popped it i fired up the dvd you have a dvd of point break yeah no any special uh features i did not get that far i should have though i could have added a real nice color to the conversation later what’s the director’s cut i have to say about this uh yeah i don’t know i think uh the cut is the cut there’s no director that’s just this is it 91 yeah and 91 they didn’t do director’s cuts back then
[0:36:01 – 0:36:23] Adam: right on um well i am excited to talk about point break later um i watched it like i said a couple mornings ago so it’s still very fresh for me and uh yeah bro you gotta learn to speak their language oh my god which just involves saying bro a few times and yeah i don’t know like the way you walk the way you carry yourself on the beach
[0:36:24 – 0:36:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:24 – 0:36:25] Erik: Tyler’s got it all figured out.
[0:36:25 – 0:36:26] Erik: She knows.
[0:36:26 – 0:36:26] Erik: She knows.
[0:36:27 – 0:36:28] Erik: She can see it in his face.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:32] Erik: We get a mildly restrained Busey performance, which is great.
[0:36:33 – 0:36:33] Adam: Subtle Busey.
[0:36:34 – 0:36:34] Erik: Subtle Busey.
[0:36:34 – 0:36:40] Erik: Still a crazy wild card, but much more subtle than most Gary Busey performances.
[0:36:40 – 0:36:40] Erik: Unhinged.
[0:36:40 – 0:36:42] Erik: This is before he had his near-death experience.
[0:36:43 – 0:36:44] Erik: I didn’t know about that.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:45] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:45 – 0:36:51] Erik: Ever since then, he’s just come back and he’s just been spitting straight truths from the universe.
[0:36:54 – 0:36:59] Adam: Yeah, it sounded like they had a lot of good treats and snacks out there on the Tumble Homey trip.
[0:36:59 – 0:37:00] Adam: Oink, oink.
[0:37:01 – 0:37:04] Adam: They had a lot of fun out there, it sounds like.
[0:37:04 – 0:37:06] Adam: So I would like to join next year as well.
[0:37:07 – 0:37:08] Erik: Yeah, lots of biter chat.
[0:37:09 – 0:37:09] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:13] Erik: The mouth mixing of powdered eggs sounded disgusting.
[0:37:14 – 0:37:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:37:14 – 0:37:15] Erik: Not interested in that.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:16] Erik: Strange lights.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:17] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:25] Erik: They felt like they were talking pretty definitively about the existence of needing to add water to the mouth mixing equation.
[0:37:25 – 0:37:27] Erik: I don’t know if it’s cut and dry.
[0:37:28 – 0:37:31] Erik: It can be, yeah, if you need a little auxiliary water, sure.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:35] Erik: But I think the point of the mouth mixer is to mix it in your mouth.
[0:37:36 – 0:37:37] Erik: You don’t need to add water.
[0:37:37 – 0:37:38] Adam: Your mouth is 98% water.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:41] Erik: Yeah, you just got to let it come around.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:43] Adam: Just be patient.
[0:37:43 – 0:37:44] Adam: Yeah, be patient.
[0:37:45 – 0:37:46] Adam: It’ll wet itself.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:48] Adam: Let those eggs rehydrate in there.
[0:37:49 – 0:37:51] Adam: Your mouth is the oven and the skillet.
[0:37:51 – 0:37:51] Adam: Ew.
[0:37:53 – 0:37:54] SPEAKER_03: Why would you use an oven?
[0:37:55 – 0:37:56] Erik: The oven and the skillet.
[0:37:56 – 0:38:00] Adam: Your mouth is the butter and the skillet in this scenario.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:01] Erik: It’s a whole kitchen in there.
[0:38:01 – 0:38:02] Adam: And the spatula.
[0:38:02 – 0:38:03] Adam: Yep.
[0:38:03 – 0:38:04] Adam: Your tongue is the spatula.
[0:38:05 – 0:38:06] Adam: Your mouth is the skillet.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:38:07 – 0:38:09] Adam: Your mouth is the bowl.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:11] Adam: This is turning into an absolute disaster.
[0:38:11 – 0:38:12] Adam: Oh, God.
[0:38:14 – 0:38:15] Adam: Anyways, we have some treats here.
[0:38:16 – 0:38:21] Adam: It’s a beautiful, warm day here, and we are coming to you live from Studio V. Yeah, can you tell?
[0:38:21 – 0:38:25] Erik: Audio-wise, is it not sounding like the shed?
[0:38:25 – 0:38:25] Erik: Shed?
[0:38:26 – 0:38:26] Erik: Shed?
[0:38:26 – 0:38:30] Adam: I don’t hear any dogs yipping, and I don’t hear any wind rattling the door.
[0:38:30 – 0:38:31] Erik: Yeah, it’s too quiet.
[0:38:31 – 0:38:33] Erik: Just hear a distant refrigerator.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:35] Adam: This modern studio.
[0:38:37 – 0:38:38] Adam: We got some big boys here.
[0:38:38 – 0:38:39] SPEAKER_03: Oh, man.
[0:38:41 – 0:38:44] Adam: Eric just finished staining the spindles.
[0:38:44 – 0:38:47] Erik: Yeah, I was in spindle hell.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Adam: He sounds thirsty, actually.
[0:38:48 – 0:38:51] Adam: Episode 267.
[0:38:51 – 0:38:51] Adam: We have a note.
[0:38:52 – 0:38:56] Adam: Eric and Adam, please enjoy the best Des Moines has to offer.
[0:38:56 – 0:39:00] Adam: You can also use the bag on any upcoming trips into the park.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:03] Adam: Enjoy the podcast.
[0:39:03 – 0:39:04] Adam: Your neighbor to the south.
[0:39:07 – 0:39:08] Adam: Enter John Cube.
[0:39:08 – 0:39:10] Adam: Enter John Cube?
[0:39:10 – 0:39:11] Erik: Enter John Cube?
[0:39:13 – 0:39:14] Adam: I thought it was from John.
[0:39:14 – 0:39:14] Adam: Hold on.
[0:39:14 – 0:39:16] Adam: I did take a picture of the whiteboard before.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:19] Adam: I grabbed these and the microphones out of the whiteboard, and then I took a picture.
[0:39:19 – 0:39:23] Adam: I grabbed these out of the shed, and then I took a picture.
[0:39:23 – 0:39:23] Adam: It’s from John.
[0:39:25 – 0:39:30] Erik: I’m sorry, but it is in a beautiful come-and-go bag.
[0:39:30 – 0:39:36] Erik: The flimsiest little tiny come-and-go bag that you immediately shredded open.
[0:39:36 – 0:39:37] Erik: So much for that.
[0:39:37 – 0:39:41] Adam: Sorry, so we’re not going to be using this in place of a tump line.
[0:39:42 – 0:39:53] Erik: You can use it as one of those auxiliary, you know, when sometimes you need a little bit of extra moisture, like an extra barrier, and you screw on some plastic onto a lid.
[0:39:53 – 0:39:54] Adam: Oh, right.
[0:39:55 – 0:39:55] Adam: We could still use it.
[0:39:55 – 0:39:57] Adam: I’m going to hang on to this bad boy.
[0:39:57 – 0:39:58] Adam: So what do we got here?
[0:39:58 – 0:39:59] Adam: It’s from Confluence Brewing.
[0:39:59 – 0:40:01] Adam: We’ve had something from Confluence Brewing before.
[0:40:02 – 0:40:02] Erik: Yeah, have we?
[0:40:03 – 0:40:06] Adam: Yeah, I recognize the… Maybe there’s more than one Confluence Brewing.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:09] Erik: I don’t know how I feel about… Where good things come together.
[0:40:10 – 0:40:11] Adam: The Confluence Brewing.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:19] Erik: I don’t know how I feel about the, the logo strikes me as very, um, uh, what’s the, what’s the best way to describe it?
[0:40:21 – 0:40:26] Erik: Uh, like business, like, uh, it’s like a, it’s not like, like Marriott, like
[0:40:27 – 0:40:47] Adam: like cheap hotel like fancied up vibes you know what i mean the confluence brewing logo yes yeah it looks like the bad versions of the state flag a little bit that people are like why didn’t the one with the wavy river win it’s like because and every comment on that is like because it looks like a cheap hotel’s logo yeah it looks like a clarion inn or something
[0:40:49 – 0:40:53] Adam: Overall, the can, though, just looks like it has a lot of current and water happening.
[0:40:53 – 0:40:54] Erik: I mean, I like the blue.
[0:40:54 – 0:40:55] Erik: We’ll see.
[0:40:55 – 0:40:56] Erik: This is the best Iowa has to offer.
[0:40:56 – 0:40:58] Adam: This is a Des Moines India Pale Ale.
[0:40:59 – 0:40:59] Adam: That’s it.
[0:41:00 – 0:41:02] Adam: I don’t know if it’s the Des Moines is the name or…
[0:41:07 – 0:41:08] Adam: Des Moines IPA.
[0:41:08 – 0:41:11] Adam: It’s a diaper, but not a double.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:11] Erik: Wow.
[0:41:12 – 0:41:13] Adam: It’s a DM IPA.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:15] Adam: Demypa.
[0:41:15 – 0:41:16] Erik: Demypa.
[0:41:16 – 0:41:18] Adam: From Confluence.
[0:41:18 – 0:41:19] Adam: Thanks, John.
[0:41:20 – 0:41:27] Adam: This donation in the Come and Go bag came in on August 7th, and it looked like you were heading out to Seagull.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:28] Adam: How was Seagull?
[0:41:28 – 0:41:29] Adam: How did that treat you?
[0:41:32 – 0:41:34] Adam: Doesn’t say this was dropped off before the trip.
[0:41:35 – 0:41:37] Adam: I hope your trip to Seagull was amazing.
[0:41:38 – 0:41:47] Adam: August on Seagull, though, I’m going to say you probably got some good swimming in and saw a bear on an island and some really good stargazing.
[0:41:48 – 0:41:50] Erik: Jumped from the Palisades.
[0:41:50 – 0:41:52] Erik: Jumped from the Palisade.
[0:41:53 – 0:42:00] Adam: That was just like a week or two after Brother Andrew was up and we stayed at the Trails End campground up in that neck of the woods.
[0:42:00 – 0:42:02] Adam: Really nice time of the year to be up at the top of the trail.
[0:42:03 – 0:42:03] Erik: Yeah.
[0:42:04 – 0:42:05] Erik: It’s been a solid few months, really.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:12] Erik: Again, I will reiterate the craving for…
[0:42:12 – 0:42:19] Erik: I’ve been tuning in extra hard more than I usually do to the hurricane.
[0:42:20 – 0:42:24] Erik: Not to date this podcast for any future listeners, but just fill in the blank.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:29] Erik: Any hurricane that is the one that everybody’s talking about this week…
[0:42:30 – 0:42:37] Erik: But mostly just because it’s always interesting to me to see how those things develop and weather is obviously always an interesting thing to me.
[0:42:38 – 0:42:44] Erik: But also just because there hasn’t been anything in our parts to even be like, oh, all right, here we go.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:44] Erik: Let’s watch this storm.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:45] Erik: Let’s see what it does.
[0:42:45 – 0:42:52] Erik: It’s just like the only thing that’s really fluctuated in the last like changed in the last month has been it’s gotten just a little colder.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:55] Erik: Not like really that cold.
[0:42:55 – 0:42:56] Erik: Yeah, just some frosty mornings.
[0:42:56 – 0:42:58] Erik: A little light frost here and there.
[0:42:58 – 0:42:59] Erik: Nothing too crazy.
[0:42:59 – 0:43:01] Erik: Nothing even that crazy with wind.
[0:43:01 – 0:43:02] Erik: I mean, it has been beautiful.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:10] Adam: I am wearing long underwear under my shorts right now, but I’ve been mainly just wearing shorts the whole month of September and most of October so far.
[0:43:10 – 0:43:15] Erik: Yeah, early-ish October staining project.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:19] Erik: Couldn’t find the staining mitt, so those spindles gave me a real…
[0:43:20 – 0:43:45] Erik: spindled sir damn spindles i feel like we had the conversation about staining spindles on this podcast like the last time we were both involved in staining and i think it was your deck the last time i said famous i’d rather rip the entire deck off my house than never restain the spindles again i have a lot of spindles but you’ve got me beat by about four times on your deck why they build that deck so big i mean it’s a nice big deck but geez that’s too much deck for that house almost
[0:43:45 – 0:43:46] Erik: Too many spindles.
[0:43:46 – 0:43:47] Adam: Too many spindles.
[0:43:47 – 0:43:50] Adam: I’d get rid of the spindles and just replace it with that wire or whatever.
[0:43:50 – 0:43:51] Erik: Yeah, I’m never standing them again.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:52] Adam: Anything but spindles again.
[0:43:52 – 0:43:53] Erik: It’s the last time.
[0:43:53 – 0:43:57] Adam: Yeah, you’re still holding on to the microphone, though, and seem to be handling yourself okay.
[0:43:57 – 0:43:57] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:57 – 0:44:01] Adam: Because, yeah, my hands were, like, destroyed for a good week after that project.
[0:44:01 – 0:44:03] Erik: Yeah, you get a little bit of the… You get spindle hands.
[0:44:03 – 0:44:05] Erik: Spindle hand, big splinters.
[0:44:07 – 0:44:11] Erik: Yeah, you think it’s just going to take a little bit and it always takes way longer.
[0:44:11 – 0:44:12] Erik: That’s the one trick.
[0:44:12 – 0:44:18] Erik: If you’re ever getting into a staining project, plan on four times longer than you think it’s going to take.
[0:44:18 – 0:44:19] Erik: Just don’t.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:20] Erik: Yeah, or just don’t.
[0:44:21 – 0:44:22] Erik: The wood will be fine.
[0:44:22 – 0:44:25] Adam: The sun will just give it a real nice patina on there.
[0:44:25 – 0:44:26] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:29] Adam: Did you see, we had some wind.
[0:44:29 – 0:44:40] Adam: I don’t know if you saw any boats in here, but yeah, that’s the only weather we’ve had recently was we had some good northwest wind a couple days ago, which did get some boats in close on the shore here.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:46] Adam: And there was some mild thunder and lightning on Saturday.
[0:44:46 – 0:44:46] Adam: Okay.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:49] Erik: Yeah, it’s really been the only measurable rain.
[0:44:50 – 0:44:52] Adam: We got a quarter inch because I got the weather station going.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:53] Adam: Did you get your weather station yet?
[0:44:53 – 0:44:54] Adam: I did, yeah.
[0:44:54 – 0:44:54] Adam: It’s up.
[0:44:55 – 0:44:55] Adam: What did you measure here?
[0:44:57 – 0:44:59] Adam: A quarter inch on Saturday night.
[0:44:59 – 0:45:00] Adam: I can go back and look.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:01] Adam: It was all like in an hour though.
[0:45:01 – 0:45:02] Erik: It was measurable.
[0:45:02 – 0:45:05] Erik: I think it was like close to a quarter of an inch, two tenths maybe.
[0:45:05 – 0:45:07] Adam: I think mine was like 0.28 inches.
[0:45:08 – 0:45:10] Adam: Most of that all came down in one flurry.
[0:45:11 – 0:45:25] Adam: But there must have been some lightning and thunder in there because I took Pike down to the beach yesterday, and we were coming home, and right by the Trout Lake Road, I looked north, and I thought, that’s weird.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:26] Adam: It looks like smoke.
[0:45:28 – 0:45:30] Adam: It’s like, eh, it’s just a weird cloud or something.
[0:45:31 – 0:45:32] Adam: I didn’t even think anything of it.
[0:45:32 – 0:45:32] Adam: I went home.
[0:45:33 – 0:45:40] Adam: This morning, I get up and take the dog out, and me and Arrow are out in the driveway, and I’m like, I smell smoke.
[0:45:41 – 0:46:09] Erik: like somebody have a bonfire last night or that’s what i thought when i was going to bed last night i kind of stuck my well i stuck my whole body outside for my uh my nightly commune with the earth yeah you know pee in the grass and i that’s what i was just like oh maybe a i was like i didn’t even think twice about it i was like oh it’s just somebody’s old like brush fire that got put out yeah but i know that the burn restrictions are like really strict right now so i would have thought i should have been like well who the hell is having a fire
[0:46:09 – 0:46:37] Adam: the hog creek trip just got in before they put the burn pan on the boundary waters and i don’t know like what the actual restrictions are for superior national forest or like here at your house but you could have a bonfire in a pit i guess but that’s what i thought i was like huh weird i smell smoke and then i never i didn’t think anything of it i went back inside and then i got a message from my neighbor like 10 10 in the morning like there’s a pretty good fire up by bogus bogus lake that’s right in the backyard it’s
[0:46:37 – 0:47:04] Adam: right in the backyard like real close uh we’ve been here for a while and that is that is easily the closest we’ve ever had a fire to the tumble shed yeah and it was like 10 acres last night it was spotted by a plane um i guess i could have called it in because it was about the time it was reported to have been called in was about when i was like coming back from the beach uh yesterday and i saw smoke for sure now in hindsight it’s so obvious
[0:47:05 – 0:47:08] Adam: It just didn’t click to me last night.
[0:47:08 – 0:47:14] Adam: By this morning, they checked on again this morning and posted something.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:18] Adam: It’s now estimated at 45 acres in size.
[0:47:18 – 0:47:19] Adam: I took the bike up.
[0:47:20 – 0:47:21] Adam: the trout Lake road.
[0:47:21 – 0:47:25] Adam: And I went all the way up to the bogus Lake road and there was no like road.
[0:47:25 – 0:47:32] Adam: I was thinking that road was going to be closed or something that I didn’t even see a vehicle, let alone any like signage or closures or anything like that.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:35] Adam: And you can definitely see the smoke, but it was pretty faint.
[0:47:35 – 0:47:41] Adam: And the wind had shifted from like a Northern wind down to like a gentle South wind Southeast.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:41] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:48] Erik: It didn’t seem like anything, any of the, any current conditions are going to amplify it too much.
[0:47:49 – 0:47:56] Adam: There’s a couple other fires out there, though, so just be noted that we have no sizable rain in the forecast.
[0:47:56 – 0:47:58] Adam: It dries a bone out there.
[0:47:58 – 0:48:12] Erik: Yeah, the last campfire restriction notification I’ve got here on the local boreal.org says that campfires are allowed only in established fire rings associated with a home, cabin, or permanent campground.
[0:48:13 – 0:48:15] Erik: So everything else is…
[0:48:15 – 0:48:19] Adam: Where this is, though, you know, it’s like north of Bogus.
[0:48:19 – 0:48:21] Adam: I mean, there’s nothing out there.
[0:48:21 – 0:48:30] Adam: There’s maybe an ATV trail or an old dog mushing trail that kind of, you know, squirrels its way through the woods north of Bogus and like Trout Lake there.
[0:48:30 – 0:48:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:48:31 – 0:48:38] Adam: I’m pretty sure there’s some sort of trail that I have not gotten to up in that neck of the woods, but like there’s no, nobody’s doing anything up there.
[0:48:39 – 0:48:53] Adam: I was riding around on Saturday, Sunday, um, on the trout Lake and there was, I mean, we ran into like seven or eight different parties of like truck hunters and
[0:48:53 – 0:48:53] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:48:53 – 0:48:55] Adam: There’s a lot of people on four-wheelers.
[0:48:55 – 0:48:56] Adam: Sporting boomers.
[0:48:57 – 0:49:05] Adam: It’s like boomer with a white goatee on a four-wheeler or a big white pickup truck just shooting grouse right out of the ditch.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:07] Adam: Like a true sportsman.
[0:49:07 – 0:49:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:10] Adam: They’re all over the place up there.
[0:49:10 – 0:49:10] Adam: So, I mean…
[0:49:11 – 0:49:13] Erik: They’re training for season 12 of Alone.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:15] Erik: And one of the 10 items on the list is a Ford F-150.
[0:49:15 – 0:49:18] Erik: A Ford F-150 with a 410 on the dash.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:18] Adam: Yep.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:19] Adam: Loaded.
[0:49:19 – 0:49:19] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:31] Adam: Shotgun shells all over the place, of course.
[0:49:31 – 0:49:34] Adam: I saw a couple just crumpled up cans of bush latte.
[0:49:34 – 0:49:36] Adam: These guys are real pieces of work.
[0:49:37 – 0:49:39] Adam: This isn’t Tumble Homies, obviously.
[0:49:39 – 0:49:43] Adam: Nobody in the community would do this, but you know.
[0:49:43 – 0:49:44] Adam: Saw a bunch of them up there.
[0:49:44 – 0:49:47] Adam: I mean, there’s people in the area, but there’s nothing, like, back there.
[0:49:47 – 0:49:58] Adam: Even if you were an intrepid grouse hunter who is shooting them from a four-wheeler back off the road, you know, still, like, what are the chances, like, a spark from ATV or something?
[0:49:58 – 0:50:00] Adam: I think this is probably a lightning strike fire.
[0:50:00 – 0:50:01] Adam: They haven’t said the cause.
[0:50:01 – 0:50:02] Erik: Right.
[0:50:02 – 0:50:03] Adam: You know, there’s nobody camping back there.
[0:50:04 – 0:50:05] Adam: You know, these guys all just camp on the road.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:06] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:08] Adam: In the back of their little truck camper.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:20] Erik: I can’t corroborate the veracity of the claims that my weather station makes, but it does give lightning strikes and how far away they were.
[0:50:21 – 0:50:24] Erik: And that last Saturday night storm, it was…
[0:50:24 – 0:50:48] Erik: it was light not pretty good in terms of like how many it was saying were in the in the vicinity so that’s i mean that’s really the only thing that’s happened in the last week that could be anything but somebody freakishly being way off like in the middle of the woods starting a fire so it’s got to be some lightning maybe it’s molded for a couple days and now then we got that wind kicked up after that storm came through and kind of stirred it you know just enough to be noticeable now
[0:50:48 – 0:51:16] Adam: yeah and now it’s just it was just basically sounds like it’s just burning you know leaf litter and you know understory brush i’ve been up in them sections though and it’s beautiful like big maple country up in there by bogus and it’s kind of open woods actually so i kind of got like a piece of me wants to go up there and just kind of poke around but it’s far enough off the road where i really don’t have the time or the will to deal with that or to investigate further so
[0:51:17 – 0:51:22] Erik: Yeah, it’s kind of one of those auxiliary maple vein tendrils.
[0:51:22 – 0:51:30] Erik: It’s not like the main vein down near like in the Lutes and Mountains or even up farther up on Grand Portage.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:36] Erik: You get up far enough off the lake and it’s just festooned with the maples and the hardwoods.
[0:51:37 – 0:51:41] Erik: And then it kind of tapers a little bit in our neck of the woods.
[0:51:41 – 0:51:46] Erik: But up by Bogus there and along that Trout Lake Road, there’s a pretty good section of them.
[0:51:46 – 0:51:51] Erik: And especially that road going up to the little repeater tower at Bogus Lake.
[0:51:51 – 0:51:55] Erik: I remember always, anytime I did a shuttle and I knew I was going to be in that neck of the woods.
[0:51:56 – 0:51:57] Erik: It’s a cool little road.
[0:51:57 – 0:52:06] Erik: But I would always make sure to bring the camera with and take a little side trip up the Bogus Lake Road and get some sweet, sweet fall color shots, which…
[0:52:08 – 0:52:08] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:52:09 – 0:52:20] Erik: I feel like fall color rankers for this year, I mean, it’s been fine, but compared to the last five years, it’s been kind of ho-hum.
[0:52:23 – 0:52:29] Adam: It was like the last two weeks of September and then just the beginning of October before we hit that rain and wind.
[0:52:29 – 0:52:32] Adam: And then it got real windy and everything kind of just came down.
[0:52:32 – 0:52:36] Adam: I mean, there’s still some nice colors out there, but yeah, I’d say we’re past peak now.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:37] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:37 – 0:52:37] Adam: Under three weeks.
[0:52:38 – 0:52:45] Erik: Could also just be a combination of me not having much time to go out and fully explore, get on a nice fall color drive.
[0:52:45 – 0:52:45] Erik: Yeah, me too.
[0:52:46 – 0:52:46] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:52:46 – 0:52:50] Erik: It just feels like they, they kind of just got like tired and fell off the trees this year.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:53] Erik: Like it hasn’t rained and like substantially in like two months.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:57] Adam: It was dusty to begin with, you know, and then I don’t know.
[0:52:57 – 0:53:02] Adam: There’s a couple of like a good week there where it was just, you know, perfect around the house.
[0:53:02 – 0:53:03] Erik: Yeah, it kind of started late.
[0:53:03 – 0:53:05] Erik: I feel like they didn’t start like really changing.
[0:53:05 – 0:53:10] Erik: And then if you go back and look at, you know, I don’t know exactly how the state does it, but they have the map up.
[0:53:10 – 0:53:11] Erik: Yeah.
[0:53:11 – 0:53:13] Erik: And you can go back and compare other years.
[0:53:13 – 0:53:20] Erik: And it was like tracking about a week farther, like I think just because it’s been so warm and…
[0:53:21 – 0:53:28] Erik: I know it’s always a little bit more based on the actual angle of light than temperatures, but temperatures can make a difference and wind makes a difference.
[0:53:28 – 0:53:31] Erik: And it felt like they were not turning as quickly.
[0:53:32 – 0:53:35] Erik: And then when they did, they kind of just went, it wasn’t like a hang on.
[0:53:36 – 0:53:43] Erik: It’s already feeling like it’s much later in the fall for how long they were really around, but I’m fine with that.
[0:53:44 – 0:53:49] Erik: The classic fall smell going now, a little bit of moisture always adds to that.
[0:53:49 – 0:54:12] Adam: not really seeing anything until maybe this weekend for more rain a little bit of rain i won’t feel like good about anything until we get some really good rain up here i’m gonna be worried about that damn fire it’s only a couple miles from the tumble shed yeah and you know it’s hilly and you know it’s near other houses so they’re gonna they’ll they’ll dump resources onto it if it actually starts moving but
[0:54:12 – 0:54:14] Erik: I mean, the nights are getting so long, though.
[0:54:15 – 0:54:28] Erik: The other thing is those fires pretty much almost all but die down with 14 hours of darkness now, especially when you’ve got the dew points where they’re at, and then you get a little bit of that frost in the morning.
[0:54:29 – 0:54:31] Erik: It’s not going to go ravaging anywhere.
[0:54:31 – 0:54:36] Adam: Oh, I’m not packing up my important documents or anything into the truck, but I mean…
[0:54:37 – 0:54:37] Erik: You don’t have a fire safe?
[0:54:38 – 0:54:38] Adam: I don’t.
[0:54:39 – 0:54:39] Adam: No.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:42] Adam: I don’t have a bug out bag neither.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:49] Adam: But I’m still going to be a little worried about it just because it’s so close to the house.
[0:54:49 – 0:54:49] Adam: Yeah.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:50] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:54:51 – 0:54:52] Adam: It’s also just kind of neat.
[0:54:52 – 0:54:53] Adam: I drove up there on the bike.
[0:54:54 – 0:54:59] Adam: I told you, if you didn’t know there was a fire there right now, you maybe wouldn’t even notice it.
[0:54:59 – 0:54:59] Adam: Yeah.
[0:54:59 – 0:55:03] Adam: But if you’re looking for where the smoke is, you can definitely see it.
[0:55:03 – 0:55:04] Adam: It’s just very faint.
[0:55:04 – 0:55:08] Adam: It’s on the backside of the hill by Bogus, kind of blowing north now.
[0:55:08 – 0:55:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:10 – 0:55:32] Adam: where we’re at uh you don’t have a great look at it but it’s both at the same time like kind of neat and fascinating but also a little scary um just having a fire that close but yeah there’s like four other fires i think just in the boundary waters in general vicinity of the boundary waters right now and yeah if you’re going in the park for a late season trip here no fires are allowed in the boundary waters so
[0:55:32 – 0:55:44] Erik: Yeah, which really, I mean, I had some mild intentions on, like, maybe doing a solo trip, and then I think the whole fire band thing kind of… Yeah, this time of year, no fire.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:45] Erik: I don’t know what I would do.
[0:55:45 – 0:55:47] Erik: Like, it gets dark at, like, 6 now.
[0:55:47 – 0:55:47] Erik: Right.
[0:55:48 – 0:55:48] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:55:48 – 0:55:55] Erik: I don’t want to just sit… And I’m not bringing a tent, so it’s like, what, am I going to just hang in a hammock for 14 hours reading?
[0:55:55 – 0:55:56] Erik: Like, I don’t know.
[0:55:56 – 0:55:57] Erik: Like, if I can’t, like…
[0:55:58 – 0:56:26] Erik: collect some firewood and sit around the campfire like i don’t really do not know what else i would do with my time and i am still like pretty much mostly off the sauce i’m not going to go out there and just like pound whiskey in the dark so there’s nothing that’s really drawing me out there by myself like if there was somebody else who wanted to go with me or you could make it into a group trip you would totally have some fun without a fire but solo fall banjo artist trip with long nights no fire no thanks
[0:56:27 – 0:56:28] Erik: What about an SHT?
[0:56:28 – 0:56:28] Adam: Shut up.
[0:56:29 – 0:56:30] Adam: You always bring that up.
[0:56:30 – 0:56:31] SPEAKER_06: Why don’t you go do a through hike?
[0:56:31 – 0:56:31] SPEAKER_06: Start now.
[0:56:31 – 0:56:34] Erik: You’d make it to Duluth by Christmas.
[0:56:34 – 0:56:38] Adam: When we were down on the beach yesterday, there was a guy who walked by because we were on the beach walk section.
[0:56:38 – 0:56:39] Adam: Yeah, and it looked like he was having a great time.
[0:56:39 – 0:56:40] Adam: He was having a great time.
[0:56:40 – 0:56:42] Adam: He really wanted to talk with us.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:43] Adam: It’s like, get away from me, you lonely weirdo.
[0:56:46 – 0:56:46] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:46 – 0:56:49] Adam: Lonely weirdo, if you’re listening to this, I take it back.
[0:56:49 – 0:56:51] Adam: You were really nice and enthusiastic.
[0:56:52 – 0:56:59] Erik: Also, what a slap in the face of the banjo artist if my first solo camping experience is on the trail, just backpacking.
[0:57:00 – 0:57:01] Erik: There’s no water out there.
[0:57:01 – 0:57:06] Erik: You have to pack in all your water unless you’re really close to Lake Superior.
[0:57:06 – 0:57:12] Erik: There is no water in any of the places where I walk around my backyard where it’s like, oh, there’s a little…
[0:57:13 – 0:57:40] Erik: almost always like a little moving water or a little pool here or there it’s just like it’s there’s not even puddles in places where there’s like always some kind of water it’s down to like bare rock just dry just dry the confluence is dry uh i’m gonna give this confluence des moines india pale ale from jean um what are you gonna give it eric i’m gonna give it eight out of eight dry pebbles
[0:57:41 – 0:58:04] Erik: eight out of eight dry pebbles yeah that’s a good thing you can put them in your mouth um i’m gonna go ahead and give it uh it’s pretty solid yeah i mean just an actual an actual it is actually good we’ll say that my biggest complaint is the uh i’ll give it seven out of eight um country and sweets logo
[0:58:06 – 0:58:11] Adam: Yeah, I mean, the logo is, you know, I get what you’re saying about it.
[0:58:11 – 0:58:13] Adam: The can itself is a beaut, though.
[0:58:13 – 0:58:14] Adam: And you know what I mean?
[0:58:14 – 0:58:17] Adam: I always love a tall can of IPA.
[0:58:17 – 0:58:17] Erik: Yeah.
[0:58:18 – 0:58:19] Adam: Thank you for the donation.
[0:58:19 – 0:58:21] Adam: This is truly Des Moines’ finest.
[0:58:22 – 0:58:26] Erik: Yeah, I mean, I don’t know if I can compare or even think of another one off the top of my head.
[0:58:26 – 0:58:29] Erik: So just on a technicality, it is.
[0:58:30 – 0:58:30] Erik: It’s the best.
[0:58:30 – 0:58:35] Adam: I drove through Des Moines a few times in the dark, so this is better than that.
[0:58:36 – 0:58:37] Erik: That’s all anybody can ever say.
[0:58:38 – 0:58:40] Erik: Yeah, I’ve driven through Des Moines.
[0:58:40 – 0:58:43] Adam: Have you ever been to Des Moines?
[0:58:43 – 0:58:45] Erik: Yeah, I drove through it a couple times.
[0:58:45 – 0:58:47] Erik: Very familiar with the interstate around it.
[0:58:48 – 0:58:48] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:58:48 – 0:58:50] Erik: And how quickly you can move through that area.
[0:58:51 – 0:58:52] Adam: You can recognize the skyline here on the can.
[0:58:53 – 0:58:56] Erik: Oh, yeah, the iconic skyline.
[0:58:56 – 0:58:58] Adam: Yeah, what’s this tower?
[0:58:59 – 0:59:02] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:59:02 – 0:59:03] Erik: What’s a defunct bank?
[0:59:04 – 0:59:07] Erik: I’m trying to think of a Northwest bank headquarters.
[0:59:07 – 0:59:07] Adam: Hawkeye State Bank.
[0:59:08 – 0:59:09] Erik: Hawkeye State Bank, probably.
[0:59:09 – 0:59:10] Erik: Headquarters.
[0:59:10 – 0:59:12] Erik: I’m sure it is a bank of some sort that nobody works in anymore.
[0:59:12 – 0:59:14] Adam: They went under and got bailed out.
[0:59:14 – 0:59:16] Erik: Yeah, it’s just empty, liminal space.
[0:59:17 – 0:59:18] Adam: That’s not socialism, though.
[0:59:19 – 0:59:20] Adam: No.
[0:59:20 – 0:59:21] Adam: Give the banks all the money.
[0:59:21 – 0:59:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:59:22 – 0:59:23] Erik: They’ll know what to do.
[0:59:23 – 0:59:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:59:24 – 0:59:25] Erik: I mean, they have it all already.
[0:59:26 – 0:59:26] Erik: Might as well let them…
[0:59:27 – 0:59:30] Adam: They’ll trickle down like Patrick Swayze wearing a Reagan mask.
[0:59:31 – 0:59:31] Adam: Man.
[0:59:31 – 0:59:35] Erik: Did you know how… You knew it was… Well, we don’t need to get into it.
[0:59:35 – 0:59:35] Erik: We’ll talk about it later.
[0:59:35 – 0:59:36] Adam: Yeah, we’ll talk about that.
[0:59:37 – 0:59:37] Adam: I can’t…
[0:59:37 – 0:59:43] Adam: I’ll tell you what I thought about the presidents and their choices on tonight’s Tom Holland Cinema Classics.
[0:59:43 – 0:59:44] Erik: Yeah.
[0:59:44 – 0:59:45] Adam: From the ex-presidents’ robber gang.
[0:59:45 – 0:59:49] Erik: We’ll find out if Adam is pro or anti-Nazi surfer.
[0:59:50 – 0:59:54] Adam: We’ll find out if I’m pro or anti-Ronald Reagan tonight on Tumblewom Cinema Classics.
[0:59:55 – 0:59:57] Adam: I’m going to finally weigh in on politics.
[0:59:57 – 0:59:58] Erik: Finally.
[0:59:58 – 1:00:00] Erik: You’ve all been waiting with bated breaths.
[1:00:01 – 1:00:02] Erik: What does he think?
[1:00:02 – 1:00:05] Erik: Where does he come down on some of these issues?
[1:00:05 – 1:00:07] Adam: Where does he come down on sulfide mining?
[1:00:07 – 1:00:10] Erik: I don’t know about you, but I am undecided.
[1:00:10 – 1:00:11] Erik: I’m still weighing my options.
[1:00:12 – 1:00:12] Adam: Are you going to vote?
[1:00:13 – 1:00:15] Erik: Feverishly watching every debate.
[1:00:15 – 1:00:16] Adam: I got my ballot.
[1:00:16 – 1:00:17] Adam: Am I going to vote?
[1:00:17 – 1:00:18] Adam: Are you going to vote?
[1:00:18 – 1:00:18] Erik: Yes.
[1:00:19 – 1:00:19] Adam: Okay, cool.
[1:00:19 – 1:00:20] Erik: What do you mean?
[1:00:21 – 1:00:22] Erik: You asked me that.
[1:00:22 – 1:00:25] Adam: We’re not going to talk about that, but I’m glad to hear you’re going to vote.
[1:00:26 – 1:00:27] Erik: Yeah, I am going to vote.
[1:00:27 – 1:00:32] Adam: Because nothing really matters except for, you know, who we send to Congress from this district.
[1:00:35 – 1:00:37] Erik: Stares intensify.
[1:00:37 – 1:00:37] Erik: Mmm.
[1:00:38 – 1:00:48] Erik: Not much that we can really say beyond the fact that the Northern Lights have been something real special the last few nights.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:53] Adam: I’m not a single-issue voter, but the Boundary Waters are one of my most important issues.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:54] Adam: Sure.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:58] Adam: It’s pretty easy to figure out who you’re voting for if you actually care about the Boundary Waters.
[1:00:58 – 1:01:01] Erik: Yeah, or just the environment in general.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:01] Erik: Or that.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:02] Erik: I mean…
[1:01:03 – 1:01:04] Adam: Yeah, we did get some Northern Lights.
[1:01:06 – 1:01:09] Adam: So it’s been a celestial wonderland this fall.
[1:01:09 – 1:01:09] Adam: It has been.
[1:01:10 – 1:01:10] Adam: Sunday night.
[1:01:10 – 1:01:15] Adam: So Saturday we got the rain with the lightning that probably caused a fire by the shed.
[1:01:15 – 1:01:15] Adam: Yeah.
[1:01:15 – 1:01:23] Erik: Well, when I was looking at it, the way that that whole CME, the X-Flare, been the first X-Flare in like a long time.
[1:01:23 – 1:01:25] Erik: We’ve got like back-to-back big X-Flares.
[1:01:25 – 1:01:27] Adam: Three X-Flares this week.
[1:01:27 – 1:01:28] Adam: Yeah.
[1:01:28 – 1:01:31] Adam: A 7.1, a 9.3, and there’s just another one.
[1:01:31 – 1:01:33] Adam: I think it’s another like X-4 or something.
[1:01:33 – 1:01:36] Erik: I thought it was just a big M, but I could be wrong.
[1:01:37 – 1:01:43] Erik: Go back to the episode 90 and 91 where we talked about the Northern Lights.
[1:01:44 – 1:01:48] Erik: And Christiane Birkeland, if you need a refresher on your solar flare classes.
[1:01:49 – 1:01:52] Adam: X is the most powerful solar flares, though.
[1:01:52 – 1:01:52] Erik: Good.
[1:01:52 – 1:01:53] Erik: I like it.
[1:01:53 – 1:01:59] Adam: There has been three, including that 9.3 X flare was the most prominent of this solar cycle so far, I believe.
[1:02:00 – 1:02:02] Adam: There was one back in the spring that was another X flare.
[1:02:02 – 1:02:03] Adam: It was pretty good.
[1:02:03 – 1:02:04] Adam: But, yeah, a 9.3.
[1:02:05 – 1:02:13] Adam: When you get to like X10s and above, that’s when you got to start worrying about like sparks flying off the wires and like the grid kind of having problems.
[1:02:13 – 1:02:15] Erik: GPS system collapsing.
[1:02:15 – 1:02:19] Adam: The power is not going to work in Montreal for a couple hours, you know, that kind of stuff.
[1:02:19 – 1:02:20] Erik: Yeah.
[1:02:21 – 1:02:26] Erik: But like the forecast for that flare was like leading into last weekend.
[1:02:26 – 1:02:28] Erik: And it was like Friday, Saturday.
[1:02:28 – 1:02:33] Erik: It’s like, of course, it’s been crystal crispy clear for the last six weeks.
[1:02:33 – 1:02:36] Erik: And it’s going to coincide with the one night it’s going to be cloudy and rainy.
[1:02:36 – 1:02:37] Adam: Right.
[1:02:37 – 1:02:41] Adam: Because it was saying at first it was like looking like Friday night, the first one could arrive.
[1:02:41 – 1:02:45] Adam: And then maybe like Saturday or Sunday night, the big one, the X9 would arrive.
[1:02:46 – 1:02:48] Adam: And Friday night comes and goes, there’s nothing.
[1:02:48 – 1:02:49] Erik: They’re always later than they forecast.
[1:02:49 – 1:02:51] Adam: Yeah, it takes them longer to get here.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:55] Erik: They had to stop at the come and go out in Des Moines before they pick up some treats.
[1:02:56 – 1:02:59] Erik: Tickling the ionosphere takes a little bit longer than you think.
[1:03:01 – 1:03:01] Adam: Uh, so yeah.
[1:03:01 – 1:03:03] Adam: And then Friday night, nothing happens.
[1:03:03 – 1:03:08] Adam: And then Saturday, as Eric said, it was like clouded up pretty good and it was definitely going to rain.
[1:03:08 – 1:03:09] Adam: It rained pretty hard.
[1:03:09 – 1:03:13] Erik: And then the clouds just lingered immediately, like cleared out though, after that storm.
[1:03:13 – 1:03:15] Erik: So I was like, Oh, Saturday night.
[1:03:15 – 1:03:15] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:16 – 1:03:18] Erik: And then still not really, there was nothing, nothing.
[1:03:19 – 1:03:20] Adam: I was like, dang, what’s going on with this thing?
[1:03:20 – 1:03:22] Adam: Like, without for sure, we’re going to get whammied.
[1:03:23 – 1:03:24] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was looking forward to it.
[1:03:24 – 1:03:27] Adam: And then it was Sunday night, like kind of late.
[1:03:29 – 1:03:32] Adam: And I went outside and it was like red.
[1:03:33 – 1:03:33] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:33 – 1:03:34] SPEAKER_03: Just red.
[1:03:35 – 1:03:36] Erik: It was back-to-back nights.
[1:03:36 – 1:03:37] Erik: Was it Sunday and Monday?
[1:03:37 – 1:03:38] Adam: Sunday, Monday.
[1:03:38 – 1:03:41] Adam: So, yeah, Sunday was the one where it was the real red ones.
[1:03:41 – 1:03:44] Erik: And Monday was the one where it was just, like, pulsing.
[1:03:44 – 1:03:45] Adam: Monday.
[1:03:45 – 1:03:53] Erik: It was, like, a distant, like, Miami was just over the closest treetops where it was, like, pulsing and moving like I’ve never seen.
[1:03:53 – 1:03:55] Erik: It wasn’t, like, really crazy intense bands.
[1:03:56 – 1:03:56] Erik: No.
[1:03:56 – 1:04:00] Erik: But the flashing and the movement was, like, you couldn’t stop watching it.
[1:04:00 – 1:04:03] Erik: It was, like, oh, my God, I’m freezing, but I can’t.
[1:04:03 – 1:04:29] Adam: look away yeah it was bright enough out there where you could have walked around the woods on monday night there was not any moon up at that time it was perfect it’s like a sliver of a moon anyway perfect conditions but yeah it was like it was almost too bright yeah like those are the kinds of northern lights that they were like directly overhead and even like pushing into the southern sky oh yeah be like getting tired of looking in one direction and then you just turn and you’re like well there’s full snow globe effect going on yeah
[1:04:29 – 1:04:48] Erik: I think it’s been since the last big solar cycle peak when we were at Clearwater that I think I’ve had such, for sure, like that far overhead, that intense for that long of a Northern Lights experience.
[1:04:48 – 1:04:49] Erik: And I kind of was like…
[1:04:50 – 1:04:55] Erik: For the longest time, like since then, you know, you get like the little KP2.
[1:04:56 – 1:04:56] Erik: Oh, that’s cute.
[1:04:56 – 1:04:57] Erik: Yeah.
[1:04:57 – 1:04:58] Erik: I’m not even going to worry about it.
[1:04:58 – 1:04:59] Erik: Like whatever.
[1:04:59 – 1:04:59] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:04:59 – 1:05:00] Erik: There’s some glow in the distance.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:01] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:03] Erik: And then you kind of get jaded after a while.
[1:05:03 – 1:05:05] Erik: We’re just like, no, I only want the big ones.
[1:05:05 – 1:05:06] Erik: Like, I don’t care.
[1:05:06 – 1:05:10] Erik: And then when you get around to getting another big event like that, you get like re-hooked in.
[1:05:11 – 1:05:11] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:11 – 1:05:12] Erik: All I want is just more.
[1:05:13 – 1:05:17] Adam: The Sunday ones, you know, so, like, my brother was like, what’s it actually look like to the eye, though?
[1:05:17 – 1:05:18] Adam: Because I’m sending him pictures, you know?
[1:05:18 – 1:05:18] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:18 – 1:05:23] SPEAKER_03: And it’s like, well, I can either take a picture on my phone, which I have an iPhone 12, I think.
[1:05:23 – 1:05:26] Adam: It’s kind of old at this point, but it takes nice pictures.
[1:05:27 – 1:05:30] Adam: And you can either just take a picture, you know, and it’s like, snap.
[1:05:31 – 1:05:31] Adam: That’s the picture.
[1:05:31 – 1:05:35] Adam: And it’s like, okay, you can see a little bit of a green glow.
[1:05:35 – 1:05:37] Adam: Or you can do the three-second night mode shot.
[1:05:37 – 1:05:38] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:38 – 1:05:38] Adam: And it’s like…
[1:05:38 – 1:05:42] SPEAKER_03: wow, holy moly, hot dog.
[1:05:42 – 1:05:45] SPEAKER_03: That is a real electrified night sky.
[1:05:45 – 1:05:47] Adam: But it’s obviously enhanced.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:54] Adam: And it’s like, well, it’s somewhere in between those two, really, like what you’re actually seeing with your naked eye.
[1:05:55 – 1:06:04] Adam: It’s hard to tell people what is true when it comes to the Northern Lights, but that Sunday night storm, I stepped out and you could see red.
[1:06:05 – 1:06:15] Erik: I didn’t see any of the reds on Sunday, but I think by all accounts, it seemed like I had much more of an obstruction to the east, and it seemed like it was heavy to the east that Sunday night.
[1:06:15 – 1:06:16] Adam: It was like on the edges.
[1:06:16 – 1:06:18] Adam: Yeah, it was like east and west.
[1:06:18 – 1:06:24] Adam: I got pictures from the house from both directions, but all the red was kind of like northeast or northwest.
[1:06:25 – 1:06:53] Adam: yeah and I didn’t have great like big and they were lower in the sky it wasn’t like the Monday night storm where it was like over the top right I mean it was down like we have a pretty good view to the north from the house and yeah it was like it was closer to the horizon but it was like dark red and then of course with that three second shot on your phone it was like neon red yeah I got some really incredible shots that night and I was like that is the nicest like red northern lights I’ve seen in a long time
[1:06:53 – 1:06:54] Adam: So those are really cool.
[1:06:54 – 1:07:02] Adam: Plus, I just felt like because they were only on the horizon, the shots for like the background of the night sky, you can actually still see like darkness and stars.
[1:07:03 – 1:07:07] Adam: Whereas all my shots from Monday night, it’s just like the whole sky is just green flashing lights.
[1:07:09 – 1:07:30] Adam: got a plane overhead they’re looking for smoke yeah smoke jumpers um but yeah i it’s interesting just like because both nights were like kp of seven kp of six and a half um you know but it just different ways in which they interact and no two northern light events are ever the same
[1:07:31 – 1:07:31] Erik: No.
[1:07:31 – 1:07:34] Erik: And that’s like what you were saying, like trying to describe it.
[1:07:34 – 1:07:50] Erik: Like a lot of times I do feel like to the human eye, most Northern light, not most, but like the, I guess, yes, most like the more common ones are just kind of like faint glow on the horizon, which isn’t, you know, for anybody who hasn’t seen them.
[1:07:51 – 1:07:52] Erik: And then they’re like, Oh yeah, those are Northern lights.
[1:07:53 – 1:07:57] Erik: It’s kind of like, okay, well it just looks like a distant city.
[1:07:57 – 1:07:59] Erik: You know, it’s like nothing really that special.
[1:07:59 – 1:07:59] Erik: Um,
[1:08:00 – 1:08:11] Erik: And you kind of, after a while, if that’s all you’re seeing, which is kind of what it has been for a while, it’s like, well, unless I want to fire up a tripod and get the big camera out, like this isn’t really that crazy to me.
[1:08:12 – 1:08:18] Erik: But there isn’t really any way to describe when they’re like dancing straight overhead like that.
[1:08:18 – 1:08:25] Erik: Like there’s nothing like in the natural world that I’ve ever seen that does anything close to that where you’re just like, I have no idea what’s going on.
[1:08:26 – 1:08:26] Erik: You have no idea.
[1:08:26 – 1:08:27] Erik: It doesn’t.
[1:08:27 – 1:08:42] Erik: follow a rhythm or a pattern it’s just like crazy flashing beams shooting it’ll like fade it gets hard you’re like I don’t know how it can get any crazier and somehow it just gets crazier and the the movement I feel like is much more like
[1:08:43 – 1:08:46] Erik: That’s whenever I get excited about seeing Northern Lights.
[1:08:46 – 1:08:55] Erik: It’s the way that they move and dance is much more explainable than, well, it’s not really as bright as they look in the pictures.
[1:08:56 – 1:09:00] Erik: But when they’re moving like that, it’s like, well, it doesn’t matter what color they are.
[1:09:00 – 1:09:01] Erik: That’s the show.
[1:09:01 – 1:09:02] Erik: That’s the show.
[1:09:02 – 1:09:03] Erik: And that’s what I’m here for.
[1:09:03 – 1:09:04] Adam: That’s what we’re all here for.
[1:09:04 – 1:09:05] Adam: Give me that dance.
[1:09:05 – 1:09:06] Adam: Yep.
[1:09:06 – 1:09:08] Adam: Seeing them pulsations in the sky.
[1:09:09 – 1:09:09] Adam: Yeah.
[1:09:10 – 1:09:27] Adam: uh i was looking at uh the data though on these two and you know we talk about the kp index a lot on this show and i got a screen grab here it was like kp of five but i think at one point it had gone up to like a you know almost an eight at one point during those two nights sure
[1:09:28 – 1:09:32] Adam: And it’s always exciting when you pull up the KP and it’s like, oh, it’s a five and a half right now.
[1:09:33 – 1:09:35] Adam: And you look and you’re like, yeah, that’s kind of clear skies.
[1:09:35 – 1:09:37] Adam: I bet tonight we might be able to see them.
[1:09:38 – 1:09:40] Adam: And then you go outside and you see them.
[1:09:40 – 1:09:42] Adam: It’s always magical when that actually lines up.
[1:09:42 – 1:09:44] Adam: And then sometimes you see it and it’s like, it’s a KP of six.
[1:09:44 – 1:09:47] Adam: There’s clear skies and you go and there’s just nothing.
[1:09:48 – 1:09:52] Adam: And then sometimes it’s like, well, it’s a KP of seven, but it’s cloudy and I got nothing here.
[1:09:52 – 1:09:57] Adam: And then you later say that like, yeah, they did see them in Montana and I missed out.
[1:09:57 – 1:09:57] Erik: Yeah.
[1:09:58 – 1:09:59] Adam: So those are always a bummer.
[1:09:59 – 1:10:04] Erik: Or it’s just daytime where it’s like it’s fully storming, but it’s the middle of the day and there’s nothing you can do about it.
[1:10:05 – 1:10:08] Erik: No matter how hard you try, we have tried to see them during the day.
[1:10:08 – 1:10:09] Erik: It’s not possible.
[1:10:09 – 1:10:10] Adam: We have seen them during the day.
[1:10:13 – 1:10:35] Adam: intruder git oh god yeah it’s been a busy day up on the hill here there’s another uh if you guys are on i like going on space weather i always just have like the kp index like page bookmarked but um there’s another factor that i wanted to discuss briefly which is the interplanetary magnetic field eric how much do you know about that
[1:10:36 – 1:10:52] Erik: um just based on that description nothing i don’t think maybe maybe something will come to mind if you continue but based off of that just three words nothing it’s very important and we’ll discuss this more after the break teaser
[1:10:54 – 1:11:13] Adam: and we’re back okay so um on space weather if you look just below the kp index there’s another uh field called the interplanetary magnetic field and i took a screen grab on this is from sunday night it was b there’s two fields b total and bz
[1:11:14 – 1:11:43] Adam: b total was at a 12.3 and then the bz was at negative 8.16 south yeah that all makes sense do you like that what do you think um yeah i i texted my sister she studied the northern lights and is a genius i said what’s up with the bz and she sent me a link actually to her credit i didn’t want her to actually have to try and explain it to me she just sent me a really good link in which they explained what is the bz and what is the interplanetary magnetic field
[1:11:43 – 1:11:46] Erik: Yeah, I was going to say, I’m going to need a lot more context.
[1:11:46 – 1:11:50] Adam: We were talking about the flashing lights from the Monday night ones, and they’re just flashing.
[1:11:50 – 1:12:02] Adam: And that’s just energy pulsating against the Earth’s magnetic field, which runs from the poles and then in a big donut shape around the globe and then back down to the other pole and so forth.
[1:12:02 – 1:12:08] Adam: So that’s just energy from the sun hitting the magnetic fields and reactions are occurring that produce light.
[1:12:08 – 1:12:10] Adam: That’s the general idea of how they work.
[1:12:12 – 1:12:15] Adam: Generally, just looking at the KP, what’s the KP?
[1:12:15 – 1:12:16] Adam: We’ve talked about it forever.
[1:12:16 – 1:12:21] Adam: I don’t really ever pay any mind to the interplanetary magnetic field.
[1:12:21 – 1:12:21] Adam: The BZ.
[1:12:22 – 1:12:23] Adam: The BZ and the B.
[1:12:23 – 1:12:28] Adam: Basically, you want the B anywhere.
[1:12:28 – 1:12:32] Adam: When you’re approaching a B of 10 or higher, that’s good stuff.
[1:12:32 – 1:12:38] Adam: It means there’s a lot of magnet juice coming from the sun and or the Earth is putting out its own magnetic draw
[1:12:40 – 1:12:46] Adam: And so a high number in the B total, for instance, a 12.3 is looking pretty good.
[1:12:46 – 1:12:53] Adam: So but I’d always heard that like a negative BZ was good for Northern Lights.
[1:12:53 – 1:12:59] Adam: And but I never I just read that somewhere at one point that like, oh, a negative 10 on the BZ is really hot.
[1:13:00 – 1:13:22] Adam: so hot right now like yeah i’ve never so that’s mainly what i wanted to like find out about you can literally graph it so the article my sister sent was just like there’s a line from the sun to the earth and that’s like the by and then the bz axis is the like runs through the it runs through the pole from the south pole to the north pole and up yeah and uh
[1:13:23 – 1:13:28] Adam: Basically, it was just like, okay, listen, it’s like a fridge magnet.
[1:13:29 – 1:13:35] Adam: A negative on the BZ would be like a negative magnetic field.
[1:13:37 – 1:13:39] Adam: And a positive is attracted to a negative.
[1:13:40 – 1:13:43] Adam: And so the energy from the sun is a positive in this instance.
[1:13:44 – 1:13:49] Adam: And so a negative BZ polarity would draw in the juice.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:50] Erik: So it’s a good thing.
[1:13:50 – 1:13:55] Adam: Yeah, like if it’s a positive BZ, it’s more prone to like ricochet the energy off.
[1:13:56 – 1:13:59] Adam: And this is definitely not, go read the article for yourself.
[1:13:59 – 1:14:06] Adam: I’m not even going to try and pretend like I’m an expert here, but I’m just giving you the very basics, Eric, of how I understand the BZ.
[1:14:07 – 1:14:08] Erik: Well, I understand it a little bit more for sure.
[1:14:08 – 1:14:16] Adam: It’s like if your fridge is at a negative 12 and you put a magnet up to it, it’s going to suck the magnet to it.
[1:14:17 – 1:14:25] Adam: So the more negative the BZ reading is, the better chance are for Northern Lights is the gist of it, which is what I always thought.
[1:14:25 – 1:14:29] Adam: Anybody who’s more interested in that, just go look it up.
[1:14:29 – 1:14:32] Adam: There’s a lot of information on the BZ and the interplanetary magnetic field, but
[1:14:33 – 1:14:43] Adam: In this case, then Monday night I looked at it and it was like a B of like 15, the B total, and then the BZ was like all the way down to like a negative 13 or something insane.
[1:14:43 – 1:14:44] Erik: It’s a really suckin’.
[1:14:45 – 1:14:47] Erik: It was really pulling in the vindleys.
[1:14:47 – 1:14:48] Erik: Pulling in the vindleys.
[1:14:48 – 1:14:51] Adam: Vindley magnet was being activated hard.
[1:14:52 – 1:15:00] Adam: So yeah, if anybody’s ever looked at that and wondered about it, I was wondering too, and it was pretty neat.
[1:15:00 – 1:15:10] Adam: The only other one I wanted to talk about this week, and it’s more sky gazing tips, Jack Horkheimer stuff here.
[1:15:11 – 1:15:27] Adam: you ever watch the stargazer uh keep looking up guy on pbs back in the day no horkheimer no not oh my god so good um anyways i got the pirate tube i’m not gonna go into a horkheimer chat here we don’t have that kind of time
[1:15:28 – 1:15:28] Erik: No, not really.
[1:15:28 – 1:15:42] Erik: Somehow, it seems like when you start the episode with 30 minutes of free content from our tumble homies in the field, all of a sudden, they’re getting a little long.
[1:15:42 – 1:15:45] Erik: Although, we’re not getting too long yet.
[1:15:45 – 1:15:47] Erik: So, Horkheimer on.
[1:15:48 – 1:15:48] Adam: Horkheimer on.
[1:15:48 – 1:15:49] Adam: So, I got the pirate tube.
[1:15:50 – 1:15:52] Adam: And for one, a couple weeks ago…
[1:15:53 – 1:15:56] Adam: There was like a partial lunar eclipse during the harvest moon.
[1:15:57 – 1:15:57] Erik: Yes.
[1:15:57 – 1:15:59] Adam: I don’t know if you got your eyes on that thing.
[1:15:59 – 1:16:01] Erik: I got my eyes on the rise.
[1:16:01 – 1:16:06] Adam: Yeah, you could see the shadow on the top of the moon.
[1:16:06 – 1:16:07] Adam: Yeah.
[1:16:08 – 1:16:09] Adam: And just naked eye, no problem.
[1:16:09 – 1:16:09] Adam: It was like,
[1:16:10 – 1:16:37] Adam: wow i’m sitting out there looking at it you know it’s a nice clear night i go you know i got that pirate tube now eric yes i’m gonna go back in and grab the pirate tube and i got it and like the it’s i don’t know what the like what the power is of that scope but it’s a nice little scope and like the incredible level of detail you could see through that thing like you could see like the ripples in the shadow on the moon through that thing it was ridiculous dang it wasn’t being ai’d by uh samsung
[1:16:37 – 1:16:37] Adam: I hope not.
[1:16:38 – 1:16:38] SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
[1:16:38 – 1:16:39] Erik: Have you heard about that?
[1:16:39 – 1:16:39] Adam: No.
[1:16:40 – 1:16:43] Erik: Well, it’s sort of a throwaway thing.
[1:16:43 – 1:16:47] Adam: Is this like an iPhone filter on the Northern Lights kind of situation?
[1:16:47 – 1:16:50] Erik: Like Samsung’s thing with phones.
[1:16:50 – 1:16:50] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:16:50 – 1:16:51] Erik: I’ve seen this.
[1:16:51 – 1:16:52] Erik: Yeah.
[1:16:52 – 1:16:54] Adam: I used to have an S6 back in the day.
[1:16:54 – 1:16:54] Erik: Yeah.
[1:16:54 – 1:16:56] Erik: I’m probably just being like…
[1:16:57 – 1:17:23] Erik: i’m some color of a pill and i’m some kind of a cock or a beta by even having this information but i swear like like the i’ve seen that samsung has been always like it’s all about the cameras man we got this crazy zoom function uh-huh it’s better than any camera you can like zoom in on the moon and look at how crazy these moon shots are moon pictures are always dissatisfying
[1:17:23 – 1:17:24] Erik: But not with Samsung.
[1:17:24 – 1:17:25] Adam: Not with the Samsung.
[1:17:26 – 1:17:32] Erik: Yeah, but this guy, apparently on YouTube, this guy proved that Samsung was using AI to enhance moon pictures.
[1:17:33 – 1:17:46] Erik: So he just took a postcard-sized picture of just a white ball with a black background, set it up in his room, and then zoomed in on it with his phone.
[1:17:46 – 1:17:52] Erik: And then all of a sudden, it just appeared with moon craters on it because Samsung is AI-ing
[1:17:52 – 1:17:54] Erik: I can see the footprint.
[1:17:54 – 1:17:54] Erik: Yeah.
[1:17:54 – 1:17:56] Erik: Neil Armstrong, he’s still up there.
[1:17:56 – 1:17:56] Erik: The flag?
[1:17:57 – 1:17:58] Erik: It’s still waving.
[1:17:58 – 1:17:58] Erik: It’s not waving.
[1:17:59 – 1:18:00] Erik: It’s still.
[1:18:00 – 1:18:01] Erik: It’s down.
[1:18:01 – 1:18:05] Erik: So yeah, that’s apropos of nothing really.
[1:18:05 – 1:18:09] Erik: I just know that that’s the dirty, dirty world that…
[1:18:09 – 1:18:11] Adam: Well, actually, I did.
[1:18:11 – 1:18:17] Adam: I tried to take some pictures with my iPhone through the pirate tube, and I got some really weird results.
[1:18:18 – 1:18:18] Adam: Oh, weird.
[1:18:18 – 1:18:29] Adam: I’m not going to go post them onto Reddit or anything and say I saw a UFO on the moon, but it was odd, but I’m sure it was just sort of like an artifact of trying to take a picture through a pirate tube with a cell phone.
[1:18:29 – 1:18:30] Erik: Probably.
[1:18:30 – 1:18:30] Erik: Probably.
[1:18:30 – 1:18:33] Adam: But it was pretty interesting, the results he got through there.
[1:18:33 – 1:18:39] Adam: But when you’re just looking at the moon through the scope, I was impressed with the level of detail I could see.
[1:18:39 – 1:18:42] Adam: And I believe I was actually seeing it, Eric.
[1:18:42 – 1:18:45] Adam: Well, I mean, the eye can’t lie.
[1:18:45 – 1:18:46] Adam: So that’s two eclipses.
[1:18:46 – 1:18:47] Adam: That was not a full one.
[1:18:48 – 1:18:53] Adam: But still, I got to see a full solar eclipse and a partial lunar eclipse with my own eye this year.
[1:18:53 – 1:18:54] Adam: So that’s pretty special.
[1:18:54 – 1:18:55] Erik: My own eye.
[1:18:55 – 1:19:04] Adam: It wasn’t a full solar eclipse, but it was like one of those ring of fire solar eclipses where it’s 99% or whatever on Easter Island last week.
[1:19:04 – 1:19:05] Erik: Yes, that’s right.
[1:19:05 – 1:19:08] Adam: Can you imagine being out on Easter Island?
[1:19:08 – 1:19:09] Adam: I think we talked about these guys already.
[1:19:09 – 1:19:11] Adam: Never did go look them up with those.
[1:19:11 – 1:19:11] Erik: The heads.
[1:19:11 – 1:19:12] Erik: The heads are called.
[1:19:12 – 1:19:13] Adam: What they’re called, yeah.
[1:19:13 – 1:19:13] Adam: They’re buried.
[1:19:13 – 1:19:14] Adam: They’re a whole people, actually.
[1:19:15 – 1:19:15] Adam: I don’t know why.
[1:19:15 – 1:19:18] Adam: Just their heads are sticking above ground like a gopher.
[1:19:18 – 1:19:19] Adam: It’s time.
[1:19:19 – 1:19:20] Adam: Easter Island.
[1:19:21 – 1:19:22] Adam: Anyhow.
[1:19:23 – 1:19:24] Adam: That was a pretty cool one.
[1:19:25 – 1:19:36] Adam: So between the northern lights and the lunar eclipse and just the excellent fall weather we’ve been having, all droughts aside, it’s been quite the fall for stargazing.
[1:19:37 – 1:19:42] Adam: But I think one of the more interesting things we may get to see is yet to come here in a few days.
[1:19:43 – 1:19:43] Adam: What is it?
[1:19:43 – 1:19:44] Adam: Chinese comet?
[1:19:44 – 1:19:45] Adam: It’s not a Chinese.
[1:19:45 – 1:19:46] Adam: Yeah.
[1:19:46 – 1:19:46] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[1:19:47 – 1:19:48] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[1:19:48 – 1:19:50] Adam: The Chinese comet’s coming.
[1:19:50 – 1:19:52] Adam: We have a sip of this Des Moines beer.
[1:19:54 – 1:19:56] Adam: So what is it, the 8th?
[1:19:57 – 1:19:57] Adam: It’s the 8th today.
[1:19:58 – 1:19:58] Erik: Ninth.
[1:19:59 – 1:19:59] Adam: Ninth.
[1:19:59 – 1:20:01] Adam: So tomorrow, starting tomorrow.
[1:20:02 – 1:20:02] Adam: Hold on.
[1:20:02 – 1:20:02] Adam: Come back.
[1:20:03 – 1:20:03] Adam: Come back to me.
[1:20:04 – 1:20:05] Adam: Oh, my God.
[1:20:05 – 1:20:06] Adam: My phone locked up, Eric.
[1:20:07 – 1:20:08] Adam: This is a conspiracy.
[1:20:08 – 1:20:12] Adam: So I’m sure everybody has heard about this comet Shushishan.
[1:20:12 – 1:20:13] Erik: Told you it was Chinese.
[1:20:14 – 1:20:20] Adam: It’s from the Chinese observatory by the same name, which means Purple Mountain Observatory.
[1:20:21 – 1:20:21] Adam: No.
[1:20:21 – 1:20:23] Erik: Purple Mountain’s Majesty?
[1:20:24 – 1:20:26] Erik: Oh, it’s so majestic.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:28] Erik: Is this a three-body problem?
[1:20:28 – 1:20:29] Erik: Did they try sending a message to it?
[1:20:31 – 1:20:31] Adam: Oh, I don’t know.
[1:20:31 – 1:20:32] Adam: Maybe.
[1:20:32 – 1:20:33] SPEAKER_03: They’re trying to talk to it?
[1:20:33 – 1:20:36] SPEAKER_03: They wouldn’t tell us that if they were trying to talk to the comet.
[1:20:36 – 1:20:39] Adam: So it was discovered earlier this year.
[1:20:40 – 1:20:41] Adam: Never been cataloged before.
[1:20:41 – 1:20:45] Erik: It’s just crazy that it’s just like, oh, yeah, there’s a comet, and we just found out it was there.
[1:20:45 – 1:20:48] Adam: Right, and it’s going to come alarmingly close to this planet.
[1:20:49 – 1:20:49] Erik: What’s the next one?
[1:20:49 – 1:20:52] Erik: Isn’t there one that’s coming in 2029?
[1:20:53 – 1:20:54] Adam: It’s going to even be closer, yeah.
[1:20:55 – 1:20:58] Erik: And then again, they’re like, no, it’s not the 2029 one.
[1:20:58 – 1:20:59] Erik: It’s the 2035 one.
[1:20:59 – 1:21:07] Adam: This is like the melancholia thing where it’s going to just miss us, but then swing around and smoke us during the wedding while we’re riding the golf cart through a French villa.
[1:21:10 – 1:21:13] Adam: Yeah, just like melancholia.
[1:21:13 – 1:21:15] Adam: We should do melancholia for TCC.
[1:21:15 – 1:21:16] Erik: Oh, with all this?
[1:21:16 – 1:21:19] Erik: I mean, I think that’s a… Did we do Dogtown?
[1:21:20 – 1:21:22] Erik: No, God, we can’t do dogs.
[1:21:22 – 1:21:23] Erik: There’s no boats.
[1:21:23 – 1:21:25] Erik: Not even one boat.
[1:21:25 – 1:21:29] Erik: Melancholia could be in the spooky season.
[1:21:29 – 1:21:30] Adam: It’s very spooky.
[1:21:31 – 1:21:32] Erik: Cape Fear, Melancholia.
[1:21:33 – 1:21:33] Erik: Sure.
[1:21:33 – 1:21:33] Erik: Spooky.
[1:21:34 – 1:21:35] Erik: I’m scared thinking about it.
[1:21:35 – 1:21:42] Adam: Yeah, anyways, this one they just discovered at the Purple Mountain Observatory, Shushishan.
[1:21:43 – 1:21:48] Adam: And then for whatever reason, the Atlas Observatory had to confirm it.
[1:21:48 – 1:21:50] Adam: And so the official- Wait, wait, wait, wait.
[1:21:50 – 1:21:51] Erik: We got to confirm it.
[1:21:52 – 1:21:54] Erik: The Americans have to confirm it before it’s real.
[1:21:54 – 1:21:55] Adam: I don’t even know where Atlas is.
[1:21:55 – 1:22:01] Adam: But yeah, the white scientists had to get in there and mansplain the comet to the Chinese, I guess.
[1:22:01 – 1:22:01] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:22:01 – 1:22:01] SPEAKER_03: Whitesplain.
[1:22:02 – 1:22:10] Adam: I don’t know how the scientific process works for naming a comet, so I will refrain from further commentary on this, but the full name of the comet is… Comet Terry.
[1:22:10 – 1:22:11] Adam: Comet Terry.
[1:22:14 – 1:22:15] Adam: Comet Terry.
[1:22:19 – 1:22:21] Adam: The full name is the C…
[1:22:21 – 1:22:25] Adam: It’s C-2023 Shushashan Atlas.
[1:22:25 – 1:22:28] Adam: If you want to look it up in your sky-gazing apps.
[1:22:28 – 1:22:30] Erik: And it’s moving away from us, though.
[1:22:31 – 1:22:34] Adam: It’s currently between the sun and the earth.
[1:22:35 – 1:22:37] Adam: But it’s moving towards us.
[1:22:38 – 1:22:41] Adam: So they discovered it, and it was on its way towards the sun.
[1:22:41 – 1:22:50] Adam: And it has now gone around the sun and is now slingshotting back past earth, which will offer us our best opportunity to see it.
[1:22:50 – 1:22:55] Adam: Plus, the effects of going around the sun will amplify the comet’s tail, as we all know.
[1:22:55 – 1:22:56] Erik: Oh, yes, we all know that.
[1:22:56 – 1:22:59] Adam: Got to spice that tail up with some sun juice.
[1:22:59 – 1:23:01] Erik: A little sun basil.
[1:23:01 – 1:23:06] Adam: Give that little BZ, dial up the BZ on that comet tail, Eric.
[1:23:07 – 1:23:08] Erik: I don’t think that’s how that works.
[1:23:08 – 1:23:09] Erik: We got it all figured out.
[1:23:10 – 1:23:12] Adam: There’s a BY axis, a BZ axis, and a B.
[1:23:12 – 1:23:14] Adam: We don’t have time to talk about the BZ axis.
[1:23:14 – 1:23:16] Adam: Anyway, there’s too many axes.
[1:23:16 – 1:23:21] Adam: The only one that really matters is BZ on the comet or on the northern lights or on Earth.
[1:23:22 – 1:23:30] Adam: Anyways, it’s coming back around, and now the tail is going to be way bigger due to it got slingshotted, much like the Omama Maua or whatever.
[1:23:31 – 1:23:33] Adam: It got sped up and shot back towards Earth.
[1:23:34 – 1:23:36] Adam: The comet’s coming back for us.
[1:23:36 – 1:23:43] Adam: It’s currently between Sun and Earth, and right now you can’t see it, but starting tomorrow, the 10th,
[1:23:44 – 1:23:52] Adam: I think the 10th, 11th, and 12th are our best chances to see the naked eye, big tail comet.
[1:23:53 – 1:23:53] Erik: To the west.
[1:23:54 – 1:24:01] Adam: Right, because up until now, you could mostly see it in the southern hemisphere or equatorial viewing stations.
[1:24:03 – 1:24:09] Adam: But it would be in the very early morning hours, like before the sun comes up, it would be preceding the sunrise.
[1:24:09 – 1:24:09] Admiral Geary: Okay.
[1:24:10 – 1:24:17] Adam: But now, starting on the 10th, the comet will be after sunset in the west.
[1:24:17 – 1:24:17] Adam: Okay.
[1:24:17 – 1:24:28] Adam: So basically go figure out a good spot where you can see the sunset, hang out, and, uh, should be just sort of following the same track as the sun, just slightly behind it.
[1:24:28 – 1:24:33] Adam: And each day will be slightly like more and more behind the sun as we go forward.
[1:24:34 – 1:24:34] Adam: Um,
[1:24:34 – 1:24:39] Adam: But also then getting farther from the sun so the tail won’t be as amplified.
[1:24:39 – 1:24:40] Erik: Sure.
[1:24:40 – 1:24:45] Adam: So that’s my basic explainer on our comet situation here.
[1:24:45 – 1:24:46] Adam: Comet fact of the week.
[1:24:46 – 1:24:47] SPEAKER_03: The cometary.
[1:24:47 – 1:24:49] SPEAKER_03: Cometary of the week.
[1:24:49 – 1:24:50] SPEAKER_03: Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[1:24:50 – 1:24:51] SPEAKER_03: Cometary.
[1:24:52 – 1:24:53] SPEAKER_03: Perfect.
[1:24:53 – 1:24:53] Adam: All right.
[1:24:54 – 1:24:58] Adam: So get your tubes out and keep looking west.
[1:24:58 – 1:25:00] Adam: I’m going to do my best Horkheimer.
[1:25:00 – 1:25:03] SPEAKER_03: Keep looking west.
[1:25:03 – 1:25:04] Erik: Wait until the sun is down.
[1:25:05 – 1:25:08] Adam: Don’t point your tube right at the sun, you maniacs.
[1:25:09 – 1:25:09] Adam: Oh, God.
[1:25:10 – 1:25:12] Erik: Do not point your tube right at the sun.
[1:25:12 – 1:25:17] Adam: Put a little mango habanero pineapple salsa on your tube and point it west.
[1:25:17 – 1:25:21] Erik: Yeah, that’s some hot salsa right in the retina if you don’t point that in the right direction.
[1:25:21 – 1:25:25] Adam: Yeah, so I’m going to try it out starting tomorrow night.
[1:25:25 – 1:25:26] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:25:26 – 1:25:30] Adam: I got to find a good spot that has a really good view to the west, which is kind of hard to come by.
[1:25:31 – 1:25:32] Erik: It is sort of tough up here.
[1:25:32 – 1:25:32] Adam: Neck of the woods.
[1:25:33 – 1:25:35] Erik: You got to find a big body of water.
[1:25:35 – 1:25:39] Adam: Yeah, we got to go to the east end of Devil’s Track somehow.
[1:25:40 – 1:25:42] Erik: Yeah, go to Skyport or something?
[1:25:42 – 1:25:43] Adam: Yeah, I’m not sure.
[1:25:43 – 1:25:46] Adam: We’re going to figure something out.
[1:25:46 – 1:25:54] Adam: I know we’ve been recording a lot in the daytime, but an evening meetup has been tricky due to the baby situation.
[1:25:54 – 1:25:57] Erik: Can we charter a craft to go out onto the big lake?
[1:25:57 – 1:25:58] Erik: There we go.
[1:25:58 – 1:26:00] Erik: Let’s charter a comet viewing tour.
[1:26:02 – 1:26:23] Adam: hire that that gigantic otter i saw down on the beach have them tow us out in a min 2 the potential you know like superior freshwater seal that you saw it was maybe a seal it barked at me it barked at us it was confirmed barking very amplified whiskers what’s the bz component on those whiskers otter
[1:26:25 – 1:26:53] Adam: uh anyways yeah comet shushushan atlas is gonna be in your skies by the time this episode reaches you might be already on our doorstep knocking on the ionosphere in the worst way possible get out there and check it out one more connection and then we’ll leave it uh there was another x flare last yesterday during the day not too many x flares another x flare but i did read something and actually i saved a screen grab of this i’m just gonna read this for you and i think we’ll leave it there is that fair to you
[1:26:53 – 1:26:54] Erik: Oh, it’s more than fair.
[1:26:54 – 1:26:55] SPEAKER_03: Oh, it’s more than fair.
[1:26:58 – 1:27:00] Adam: The CME will hit Earth and a comet.
[1:27:01 – 1:27:07] Adam: On the 7th, sunspot 3842 produced an X2-class solar flare.
[1:27:07 – 1:27:14] Adam: The explosion hurled a significant CME into space, which captured both the sun and the passing comet.
[1:27:14 – 1:27:16] Adam: Oh, yeah, I saw that.
[1:27:16 – 1:27:17] Erik: That’s great.
[1:27:17 – 1:27:18] Adam: Yeah, it’s in there.
[1:27:19 – 1:27:20] Adam: I’m trying to scroll up.
[1:27:20 – 1:27:21] Erik: This is a screen grab, Grandpa.
[1:27:22 – 1:27:27] Erik: It’s like way brighter than what Saturn or Jupiter that’s also on there.
[1:27:27 – 1:27:28] Erik: Yeah.
[1:27:28 – 1:27:31] Erik: Just like this huge finger of light that comes in off the screen.
[1:27:31 – 1:27:31] Adam: Yeah.
[1:27:31 – 1:27:35] Adam: I like how the tail of the comet is going to kind of move around based on its orientation to the sun as well.
[1:27:36 – 1:27:37] Adam: Like this could be very exciting.
[1:27:37 – 1:27:38] Adam: But however…
[1:27:38 – 1:27:42] Adam: The CME is going to hit both the comet and the Earth in that order.
[1:27:42 – 1:27:44] Adam: The CME will strike the comet later today.
[1:27:45 – 1:27:47] Adam: The impact could actually rip off the comet’s tail.
[1:27:48 – 1:27:51] Adam: The same thing happened to comet Enkei in April of 2007.
[1:27:51 – 1:27:58] Adam: A broken tail is something astronomers should look for when comet Shushashan Atlas emerges from the sun’s glare later this week.
[1:27:59 – 1:28:00] Adam: There we go.
[1:28:00 – 1:28:02] Adam: So we had to wait at all this time.
[1:28:02 – 1:28:05] Adam: I was getting super excited for this comet, and I’m super excited for the Northern Lights.
[1:28:06 – 1:28:09] Adam: But that damn X-Flare gets you every time.
[1:28:09 – 1:28:12] Adam: It may have just ripped the tail right off the comet.
[1:28:12 – 1:28:18] Adam: Because a lot of people thought it wasn’t going to survive getting whipped around the sun in the first place.
[1:28:18 – 1:28:24] Adam: A lot of people out there being very pessimistic saying, this comet’s not going to survive that close pass to the sun.
[1:28:24 – 1:28:26] Adam: It’s going to come out the other side in just pieces.
[1:28:26 – 1:28:27] Erik: Comet truthers?
[1:28:27 – 1:28:27] Adam: Yep.
[1:28:28 – 1:28:30] Adam: And then it came out the other side looking just great.
[1:28:31 – 1:28:35] Adam: And it’s getting so close to the time when we’re going to be able to see it.
[1:28:35 – 1:28:36] Erik: With a glorious tail.
[1:28:36 – 1:28:38] Adam: But then an X-Flare got it in the very end.
[1:28:39 – 1:28:41] Erik: It knocked the tail off.
[1:28:41 – 1:28:41] Adam: My tail!
[1:28:42 – 1:28:44] Adam: My tail!
[1:28:45 – 1:28:46] Erik: That’s what comets sound like.
[1:28:46 – 1:28:49] Erik: It’s like holding a southerner down and cutting his mullet off.
[1:28:49 – 1:28:50] Adam: No!
[1:28:50 – 1:28:55] Erik: Not my tail, you dang dirty real blueski!
[1:28:55 – 1:28:57] Erik: It’s what gives me my powers.
[1:28:59 – 1:28:59] Adam: Dirty Yanks.
[1:29:00 – 1:29:01] Erik: There it is.
[1:29:03 – 1:29:05] Adam: All right, well, this has been an absolute disaster.
[1:29:05 – 1:29:06] Adam: What?
[1:29:07 – 1:29:10] Adam: From top to bottom, from BZ to BY.
[1:29:10 – 1:29:11] Erik: Absolute disaster.
[1:29:11 – 1:29:12] Erik: Yeah, it kind of has been.
[1:29:13 – 1:29:14] Adam: I loved it, though.
[1:29:14 – 1:29:15] Adam: I loved every minute of it.
[1:29:15 – 1:29:20] Adam: Thanks to the Tumble Homies for their delightful in-the-field audio.
[1:29:21 – 1:29:27] Adam: Phasmata, I believe, with the mix and the oink bleeps, which I appreciated.
[1:29:28 – 1:29:36] Adam: And thank you for the delicious Confluence Brewing Des Moines IPAs from John.
[1:29:36 – 1:29:40] Adam: I hope your seagull trip was everything you imagined it could be.
[1:29:40 – 1:29:44] Erik: The Hyundai of logos, but the beer is delicious.
[1:29:44 – 1:29:46] Adam: This is the Hyundai of logos.
[1:29:46 – 1:29:47] Adam: Hyundai.
[1:29:47 – 1:29:48] Adam: Keionda?
[1:29:48 – 1:29:49] Adam: Ah, Keionda.
[1:29:49 – 1:29:50] Adam: Keionda.
[1:29:50 – 1:29:51] Adam: De nada.
[1:29:52 – 1:29:55] Adam: How do you say, is that the Keionda?
[1:29:55 – 1:29:56] Adam: Keionda.
[1:29:56 – 1:29:57] Adam: Don’t worry about it.
[1:29:57 – 1:29:59] Erik: Keionda, no, it’s not don’t worry about it.
[1:30:00 – 1:30:00] Adam: What is it?
[1:30:01 – 1:30:01] Erik: Keionda?
[1:30:01 – 1:30:02] Erik: Yeah.
[1:30:03 – 1:30:04] Erik: What’s the vibe?
[1:30:04 – 1:30:05] Erik: Oh, yeah, what’s the vibe?
[1:30:07 – 1:30:08] Adam: You don’t have a tail no more?
[1:30:08 – 1:30:09] Adam: It’s okay.
[1:30:09 – 1:30:09] Adam: You can hang with us.
[1:30:11 – 1:30:14] Adam: All right, that’ll do it for episode 267.
[1:30:14 – 1:30:18] Adam: Thanks for having me over here in Studio V, Eric.
[1:30:19 – 1:30:26] Erik: Now it’s time to climb the ladder up to the mezzanine just to keep the kids out.
[1:30:27 – 1:30:27] Erik: That’s right.
[1:30:28 – 1:30:29] Erik: Climb up there and then we kick the ladder down.
[1:30:31 – 1:30:36] Erik: Talk all about Keanu Reeves and his incredible acting, his range.
[1:30:37 – 1:30:41] Adam: As somebody who’s suffered a major knee injury, I can say his limp is impeccable.
[1:30:42 – 1:30:44] Erik: Yeah, I wonder how realistic that was.
[1:30:45 – 1:30:47] Adam: He actually had his ACL removed for this movie.
[1:30:47 – 1:30:52] Erik: A pretty realistic, like, what would actually happen during, like, a crazy foot chase like that.
[1:30:52 – 1:30:54] Erik: It just blew out my knee.
[1:30:54 – 1:30:57] Adam: Yeah, tell you what, I ain’t climbing any fences anymore.
[1:30:57 – 1:30:57] Adam: No.
[1:30:57 – 1:30:59] Adam: But, you know, I ain’t no Johnny Utah.
[1:30:59 – 1:31:00] Erik: It is a great scene.
[1:31:00 – 1:31:03] Erik: One of the great foot chase scenes of all time.
[1:31:04 – 1:31:06] Erik: Spawned so many great foot chase scenes.
[1:31:06 – 1:31:08] Erik: What else we got?
[1:31:08 – 1:31:09] Erik: Some James Bond in there.
[1:31:10 – 1:31:11] Erik: Some Bourne.
[1:31:11 – 1:31:20] Adam: I was a little disappointed because I read something like most action movies when they’re having a foot chase, they end up running through a commercial kitchen somehow and banging into pots and pans.
[1:31:21 – 1:31:21] Adam: This one did not.
[1:31:22 – 1:31:24] Adam: They ran through maybe a couple home kitchens.
[1:31:24 – 1:31:31] Erik: Yeah, we had a Ferris Bueller style backyard chase scene where it was just like the afternoon happenings of the community.
[1:31:31 – 1:31:34] Erik: Some woman was vacuuming, doing some laundry.
[1:31:34 – 1:31:37] Erik: I believe a pit bull gets thrown at him at one point.
[1:31:37 – 1:31:39] Adam: Yeah, that’s a good diversionary tactic.
[1:31:40 – 1:31:43] Adam: Also, just sliding a door shut and then locking the door.
[1:31:43 – 1:31:46] Erik: And then just throwing a chair through it and just crashing into the horse.
[1:31:46 – 1:31:47] Adam: That didn’t work out so hot.
[1:31:48 – 1:31:48] Adam: No.
[1:31:49 – 1:31:49] Adam: All right.
[1:31:51 – 1:31:52] Adam: Well, thanks for listening, everybody.
[1:31:53 – 1:31:55] Adam: And we’ll be back at you next week.
[1:31:55 – 1:31:57] Adam: We have a story to tell you next week.
[1:31:58 – 1:31:58] Adam: Ooh.
[1:31:59 – 1:32:01] Adam: And it does involve paddling, so don’t worry.
[1:32:02 – 1:32:04] Erik: We still talk about paddling every once in a while.
[1:32:04 – 1:32:05] Erik: Every once in a while.
[1:32:05 – 1:32:07] Erik: It’s a Boundary Waters podcast.
[1:32:07 – 1:32:07] Adam: Yeah.
[1:32:07 – 1:32:09] Adam: Well, this was a Boundary Waters podcast.
[1:32:09 – 1:32:11] Adam: We came to you live from Parent Lake to start.
[1:32:11 – 1:32:13] Adam: And by we, that is the royal we.
[1:32:14 – 1:32:16] Adam: Thank you to our tumble homies.
[1:32:16 – 1:32:18] Adam: You did punch your ticket to Wabakimi.
[1:32:18 – 1:32:19] Erik: See you guys up there in 2027.
[1:32:20 – 1:32:23] Adam: We’re going to see you there, and we’ll see you all next week.
[1:32:24 – 1:32:28] Adam: Thanks for being here, as we always say on Tumulium.
[1:32:28 – 1:32:32] Adam: Happy paddling, and enjoy your miracles.
[1:32:32 – 1:32:35] Adam: Good night.
[1:32:35 – 1:32:36] SPEAKER_08: Good night.
[1:32:48 – 1:32:48] UNKNOWN: Thank you.
[1:33:16 – 1:33:17] SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
[1:33:53 – 1:33:58] UNKNOWN: Well, that’s about it for this episode.
