[0:00:51 – 0:00:53] Adam: A beautiful night here in the last day of November.
[0:00:53 – 0:00:54] Adam: My name is Adam.
[0:00:55 – 0:01:01] Adam: Joining me here in the shed with Old Arrow is my dearest friend, Eric.
[0:01:01 – 0:01:01] Adam: Hello, Eric.
[0:01:02 – 0:01:02] Adam: Hello.
[0:01:02 – 0:01:02] Adam: Hi.
[0:01:02 – 0:01:03] Adam: Still cold.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:03] Adam: Still November.
[0:01:05 – 0:01:05] Erik: Still November.
[0:01:07 – 0:01:08] Erik: For just a little bit longer.
[0:01:08 – 0:01:10] Erik: For just a couple more hours.
[0:01:10 – 0:01:11] Erik: It’s after dark.
[0:01:11 – 0:01:13] Erik: Skeletons are still hanging on the wall.
[0:01:15 – 0:01:16] Erik: Heater’s been on for a week straight.
[0:01:17 – 0:01:18] Adam: Trevor came back.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:18] Adam: Thank God.
[0:01:19 – 0:01:22] Adam: We put out a little bowl of tuna.
[0:01:23 – 0:01:24] Erik: Oh, is that what we did?
[0:01:24 – 0:01:26] Erik: We didn’t involve the authorities at all.
[0:01:26 – 0:01:29] Erik: We just put out a little tin of tuna.
[0:01:29 – 0:01:30] Erik: Yeah, spoiler.
[0:01:30 – 0:01:31] Erik: Big…
[0:01:34 – 0:02:02] Adam: twist ending turns out trevor and this whole time he was a cat oh is that what was going on yeah i thought for sure you’re gonna say like we sent him to the olympics oh wow what uh would he be contending in what figure skating for sure he’s a regular db sweeney in the making yeah can’t quit you did you know there’s more than one cutting edge uh yeah i did i didn’t know this yeah there’s a lot of them i watched the trailer
[0:02:03 – 0:02:07] Adam: Oh, wait, which trailer did you play at the end of the last episode?
[0:02:07 – 0:02:07] Adam: Was that for one or two?
[0:02:07 – 0:02:08] Erik: That was the original.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:11] Adam: Okay, I thought so.
[0:02:11 – 0:02:12] Adam: Hard to tell, though, just from the audio.
[0:02:12 – 0:02:13] Erik: I could have been fooled.
[0:02:13 – 0:02:15] Erik: It could have been anything, yeah, I’m sure.
[0:02:15 – 0:02:16] Adam: It could have been any of the cutting edges.
[0:02:16 – 0:02:18] Erik: Pretty basic format there.
[0:02:18 – 0:02:25] Erik: Plug and play any old DB Sweeney you want into that format there.
[0:02:27 – 0:02:32] Adam: We’re going to be, of course, ranking our favorite ice skating and hockey movies in this episode.
[0:02:32 – 0:02:33] Erik: Are we?
[0:02:33 – 0:02:34] Adam: This is the season finale.
[0:02:34 – 0:02:35] Adam: I’ve written a haiku.
[0:02:36 – 0:02:47] Adam: We’ve got an extra special art sponsor, and we’re going to be reading the epic emails and starting with Sam Squinch, the finale of the question of the year tonight.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:48] Adam: That’s right.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:52] Erik: It is one email, but it is so long you probably could say emails.
[0:02:53 – 0:02:55] Adam: We’re going to have to take turns reading the email, I think.
[0:02:56 – 0:02:56] Erik: Yeah, probably.
[0:02:59 – 0:03:08] Adam: Tonight’s Ronald Schera outdoor calendar fact of the night for November 30th, 2020 X is Ron Schera.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:11] Adam: Minnesota calendar makes a great gift.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:12] Adam: Order now.
[0:03:12 – 0:03:12] AdamPewPew: Hmm.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:14] AdamPewPew: Okay.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:22] Adam: Sunset is at 4.33 p.m. That makes this officially tumble home after… What is this now?
[0:03:22 – 0:03:26] Erik: I’ve also got the November 2021 calendar, Eric.
[0:03:26 – 0:03:28] Erik: Almost like you don’t need to buy it, actually, because…
[0:03:29 – 0:03:33] Adam: November 30th, 2021.
[0:03:33 – 0:03:35] Adam: Don’t forget to order the Ronald Chera calendar.
[0:03:36 – 0:03:38] Adam: Sunsets at 4.33 p.m.
[0:03:39 – 0:03:42] Erik: It only took us three years to get to the bottom of you.
[0:03:44 – 0:03:48] Adam: And that’s what happens when you don’t have a good intern like Trevor over here.
[0:03:49 – 0:03:55] Adam: Ron’s probably hiring second-rate interns or just giving out internships to his buddy’s kids or whatever.
[0:03:57 – 0:04:01] Adam: Trevor earned this internship, and we’re glad he’s back because the kid’s a hard worker.
[0:04:01 – 0:04:02] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:03] Adam: I mean, the cat.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:03] Erik: The cat.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:05] Adam: He’s a good cat.
[0:04:05 – 0:04:09] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:09 – 0:04:12] Adam: So anyways, it makes a great gift, though.
[0:04:12 – 0:04:13] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:14] Adam: Thank you, Ron.
[0:04:14 – 0:04:36] Adam: or you just buy one and keep it for years to come oh we couldn’t find the 2023 and then i was digging around the shed and i found the 2021 and then i later found the 23 and i was like huh yeah i see how this is yeah i see it’s no shocker you’ve been on we pretty much had that figured out for a while now yeah it’s been kind of an ongoing joke of tumble home yeah
[0:04:37 – 0:04:40] Adam: Ron, if you’re out there and listening, please hit us up on the email.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:40] Adam: It’s fine.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:41] Adam: We want to meet you.
[0:04:41 – 0:04:41] Adam: Yeah, it’s fine.
[0:04:41 – 0:04:42] Adam: We do want to meet you.
[0:04:42 – 0:04:43] Adam: We’re big fans.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:46] Adam: That’s tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:04:46 – 0:04:50] Adam: You can also reach us at tumblehomecast on Instagram picture app.
[0:04:51 – 0:04:53] Adam: And that’s about it at this point.
[0:04:53 – 0:04:54] Adam: Or on the Discord.
[0:04:54 – 0:04:55] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:04:55 – 0:04:58] Adam: We’re pretty, the Discord’s pretty active.
[0:04:58 – 0:05:03] Adam: And the subreddit’s almost, it’s at like 987, Eric, the tumblehomecast subreddit.
[0:05:03 – 0:05:04] Erik: I don’t know if we’re going to get there.
[0:05:04 – 0:05:06] Adam: How many of those are real, though?
[0:05:07 – 0:05:10] Erik: Well, I mean, I think a human at some point had to join.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:13] Adam: Who knows how many are still active.
[0:05:13 – 0:05:15] Adam: I’d say at least half of those are real humans.
[0:05:15 – 0:05:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:21] Adam: Episode 244, probably the season finale.
[0:05:21 – 0:05:22] Adam: It’s getting too cold.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:26] Adam: I think the loons, this is probably the last night a loon could be in Cook County.
[0:05:26 – 0:05:47] Adam: yeah that’s official doesn’t say it on the calendar but uh that’s a real fact yeah that’s an actual fact and everybody knows the show is tied to the loon yeah and uh so you know we’re speculating on some ice skating locations and probably the big lakes are still open but maybe for another day or two it was kind of warm today actually
[0:05:47 – 0:06:14] Erik: yeah yeah it’s right on the verge it is one uh one more cool like single digit close to zero night i feel like everything’s with a little yeah with a light wind and it’s all gonna lock up yeah something of beauty as of right now a little bit above freezing every day 20s at night i mean that’s manageable uh we have an extra special uh
[0:06:16 – 0:06:37] Adam: art supply sponsor tonight show sponsor of the year we saved it for the final episode of the season here in the cold shed this is from dearest friend of the show hopalicious and i’m looking at a large bottle of whiskey yeah i am too
[0:06:39 – 0:06:40] Adam: I’m trying to figure out what it’s called.
[0:06:40 – 0:06:42] Erik: I think there’s a label.
[0:06:42 – 0:06:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:06:43 – 0:06:44] Adam: Maybe I should just read off the label.
[0:06:45 – 0:06:50] Adam: Um, I was like texting with Hopalicious trying to like sound wise about whiskey.
[0:06:50 – 0:06:51] Erik: Oh, don’t reveal that.
[0:06:53 – 0:06:54] Adam: That’s the whole secret.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:54] Adam: Yeah.
[0:06:55 – 0:06:55] Adam: Communication.
[0:06:56 – 0:06:58] Adam: Uh, this is Redwood Empire.
[0:06:59 – 0:07:00] Adam: From California?
[0:07:00 – 0:07:00] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:19] Adam: Sonoma yeah it’s got a picture of John it’s like a woodcut of John Muir nice on the on the label here with like trees growing out of his mind very good yes I’ve been staring at that up above your head on top of the cabinets back there for I don’t know how long you’ve had that the whole summer pretty much
[0:07:20 – 0:07:22] Adam: This came in early, yeah.
[0:07:22 – 0:07:28] Adam: It’s still June when I met Hopalicious in the parking lot of the co-op.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:29] Adam: That’s right.
[0:07:29 – 0:07:34] Adam: And we ate trail mix and talked about the trips and all that.
[0:07:35 – 0:07:39] Adam: Yeah, there’s a quote on the top.
[0:07:39 – 0:07:44] Adam: This is the Lost Monarch from Redwood Empire blend of straight whiskeys.
[0:07:46 – 0:07:49] Adam: Hoplish has texted me what it’s supposed to be called, so I will look that up.
[0:07:49 – 0:07:51] Adam: But there’s a Muir quote on the cover.
[0:07:52 – 0:07:58] Adam: In every walk with nature, our receivers far more than he’s… Three…
[0:08:00 – 0:08:25] Adam: what kind of font is this i don’t know handwritten handwritten font and uh three two one yeah and on the cover there’s the quote from john muir here eric okay in every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks john muir well it was way shorter than i thought it was going to be considering how badly you bungled it the first time
[0:08:27 – 0:08:27] Erik: That’s a good message.
[0:08:27 – 0:08:29] Adam: There’s a lot on the back, too, yeah.
[0:08:29 – 0:08:30] Adam: This thing’s pretty cold.
[0:08:31 – 0:08:38] Adam: Hop said serve it at room temp, but didn’t say what the average temperature of a room should be.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:40] Adam: Yeah, room temp?
[0:08:41 – 0:08:42] Adam: What’s a room, really?
[0:08:42 – 0:08:45] Adam: What would John Muir say about rooms?
[0:08:45 – 0:08:46] Erik: Yeah, that’s a good question.
[0:08:47 – 0:08:49] Adam: This is a blend of straight whiskeys.
[0:08:49 – 0:08:56] Adam: The Lost Monarch is a blend of straight rye whiskeys and straight bourbon whiskeys aged at least three years.
[0:08:57 – 0:09:13] Adam: Aging or barrels in the temperate climate of the Northern California coast allows for a slow and even extraction of flavor, producing a whiskey of exceptional balance and complexity from the land of ancient giants, Eric.
[0:09:14 – 0:09:15] Erik: Very nice.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:19] Adam: My favorite thing about big trees out West is they all have names.
[0:09:19 – 0:09:24] Adam: Like, uh, they have names like, uh, cabins on the North shore or racehorses.
[0:09:24 – 0:09:24] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:26] Adam: The cabins, the lost monarch.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:27 – 0:09:29] Adam: That’s a, that’s a tree.
[0:09:30 – 0:09:32] Adam: One of the biggest in the Grove.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:33] Adam: Very nice.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:33] Erik: I like it.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:35] Erik: I mean, even all the Groves have names.
[0:09:35 – 0:09:41] Erik: They’re usually named after like wealthy philanthropists, which that’s fine, but.
[0:09:42 – 0:09:45] Adam: This is, I think, the biggest tree in the Grove of Titans.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:48] Adam: Wow.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:52] Adam: It’s the world’s largest coastal redwood by volume.
[0:09:52 – 0:09:53] Erik: Volume.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:54] Adam: At 321 feet tall and 26 feet in diameter.
[0:09:58 – 0:10:07] Adam: Lost Monarch can be found in the Grove of Titans, a legendary stand of ancient conifers in Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:09] Adam: Hear, hear.
[0:10:09 – 0:10:10] Erik: Nice.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:10] Erik: All right.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:12] Erik: I’ve been to Jedediah.
[0:10:12 – 0:10:12] Erik: Have you?
[0:10:12 – 0:10:14] Erik: It’s like right in the national park.
[0:10:15 – 0:10:16] Adam: All right.
[0:10:16 – 0:10:16] Adam: I’m popping this cork.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:17] Adam: Do it.
[0:10:18 – 0:10:21] Adam: On the last day of November.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:24] Adam: I’m, of course, using a little ash pottery.
[0:10:24 – 0:10:25] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:10:25 – 0:10:25] Adam: That’s right.
[0:10:25 – 0:10:25] Adam: Sipper.
[0:10:26 – 0:10:26] Adam: Sipper.
[0:10:29 – 0:10:30] Adam: It’s cold, Eric.
[0:10:30 – 0:10:31] Adam: It’s too cold.
[0:10:31 – 0:10:33] Erik: Why don’t you just bring it to room temperature in your mouth?
[0:10:34 – 0:10:35] Adam: There you go.
[0:10:35 – 0:10:36] Adam: Thank you.
[0:10:36 – 0:10:37] Adam: Thank you, Hopalicious.
[0:10:37 – 0:10:38] Adam: Yeah, thanks, Hopalicious.
[0:10:39 – 0:10:40] Adam: Holy moly, hot dog.
[0:10:42 – 0:10:43] Adam: Put that down by the heater, maybe.
[0:10:43 – 0:10:45] Adam: Let Eric see the bottle.
[0:10:45 – 0:10:47] Erik: Stick it under my armpit here for a little while for you.
[0:10:47 – 0:10:52] Erik: Warm it in the pit of your heart.
[0:10:52 – 0:10:53] Adam: All right, let’s have it.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:22] Adam: smells like booze that’s smooth camped inside the redwood that one time that’s right remember when we saw the sequoia yeah remember when we saw the bobcat in the morning oh yeah yeah coming down that massive we’re the only one in that whole campsite
[0:11:23 – 0:11:25] Erik: Yeah, where was that?
[0:11:25 – 0:11:27] Erik: What kind of a campground was that?
[0:11:27 – 0:11:29] Adam: It was in between Death Valley and Santa Barbara.
[0:11:30 – 0:11:33] Erik: Yeah, but I can’t remember what kind of a campground or whatever it was.
[0:11:33 – 0:11:35] Adam: I think it was like a national forest up there.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:36] Erik: There was like…
[0:11:36 – 0:11:37] Erik: There was nobody.
[0:11:37 – 0:11:42] Erik: No, it was like a little tiny… Yeah, it was kind of like your superior national forest.
[0:11:42 – 0:11:45] Adam: Then they yelled at us in Santa Barbara for swimming.
[0:11:46 – 0:11:47] Erik: In the middle of winter, apparently.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:49] Erik: The amount of side eyes.
[0:11:49 – 0:11:51] Erik: They might as well have been yelling.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:53] Erik: What are you, from Wisconsin or something?
[0:11:53 – 0:11:56] Erik: Buying beach towels on November 20th in California when it’s 60 degrees.
[0:12:01 – 0:12:27] Adam: it’s great for us i remember when i was little seeing the big trees and like you can drive your like they have like tunnels carved out of them in yosemite where you can like drive there’s a couple of those out in the redwoods too yeah but i don’t remember seeing anything like that but i mean these trees are still just mind-boggling every time you see them yeah oh yeah puts you in a real different headspace than any other national park for sure yeah the biggest trees yeah you in the world
[0:12:28 – 0:12:46] Adam: yeah i mean i think yeah on like the grand scheme of big tree species on this world at least yeah yeah i don’t think there’s anything on planet earth bigger than the those guys no on average probably not maybe like older ones but we’re talking volume
[0:12:46 – 0:12:51] Adam: I like about them, too, that the biggest ones that they know about, they keep it top secret.
[0:12:52 – 0:12:54] Adam: Yeah, the very biggest one is not.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:56] Adam: Humans can’t be trusted with this knowledge.
[0:12:56 – 0:12:58] Adam: No, no.
[0:12:58 – 0:13:05] Adam: I’m not okay with black budgets and secret military stuff so much, but I’m cool with them keeping the big trees secret.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:07] Adam: That’s a national secret that we must keep.
[0:13:07 – 0:13:08] Erik: Yeah, keep that classified.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:08] Erik: That’s fine.
[0:13:09 – 0:13:10] Erik: There’s big enough ones out there.
[0:13:11 – 0:13:12] Erik: I don’t need to see the biggest ones.
[0:13:13 – 0:13:14] Adam: We don’t even know their names.
[0:13:15 – 0:13:15] Adam: No?
[0:13:15 – 0:13:17] Adam: The big ones, you don’t even know their names.
[0:13:17 – 0:13:25] Erik: The big one does have a name, but the location is definitely very obfuscated.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:29] Erik: I don’t think there’s a road or a trail to it.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:31] Adam: It’s just out in the middle somewhere.
[0:13:32 – 0:13:41] Erik: I think there was a story back in the day where they were, before they really learned how old they were and like how to do dating, they were just like, oh, this one looks like it’s old.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:42] Erik: We should cut it down.
[0:13:42 – 0:13:45] Erik: And they cut it down and it turned out it was actually the biggest one.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:46] Erik: Ooh.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:48] Erik: But then it was, all right, well, it’s gone now.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:55] Erik: We’ve grown a little bit as a tree age testing society.
[0:13:56 – 0:13:57] Erik: Imagine the boards we can make with this.
[0:13:58 – 0:13:59] Erik: Imagine all of the boards.
[0:13:59 – 0:14:01] Erik: I’m sure there’s still a board or two out of that tree on a floor somewhere.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:03] Adam: I would hope so, yeah.
[0:14:03 – 0:14:07] Erik: Hopefully in a wall somewhere holding up a decent building.
[0:14:08 – 0:14:08] AdamPewPew: Yeah.
[0:14:10 – 0:14:13] Adam: Yeah, it’s kind of mind-boggling how old they are.
[0:14:14 – 0:14:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:15 – 0:14:17] Erik: Yeah, it kind of gives ours perspective when you come back.
[0:14:17 – 0:14:19] Erik: You’re just like, well, the big white pine’s
[0:14:24 – 0:14:25] Erik: What is that?
[0:14:25 – 0:14:25] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:14:26 – 0:14:26] Erik: What is that?
[0:14:26 – 0:14:29] Erik: Something’s outside scratching at the door.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:31] Adam: Trevor?
[0:14:32 – 0:14:34] Adam: Trevor’s just giving us a look like, I don’t know.
[0:14:34 – 0:14:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:38 – 0:14:39] Adam: Come on, Bill.
[0:14:40 – 0:14:42] Adam: Let us know where you are next time, maybe.
[0:14:42 – 0:14:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:43 – 0:14:44] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:45] Erik: Let’s Sam Squanch it.
[0:14:46 – 0:14:47] Erik: It’s question of the year time, right?
[0:14:48 – 0:14:49] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:14:49 – 0:14:51] Erik: Did you grade that whiskey yet?
[0:14:52 – 0:14:53] Adam: What’s the tallest?
[0:14:53 – 0:14:55] Adam: 399 out of 1,000 rings.
[0:14:55 – 0:15:00] Adam: 321 volume board feet trunk out of 321.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:01] Adam: That’s what I’m giving it.
[0:15:01 – 0:15:02] Adam: It’s a perfect 321.
[0:15:02 – 0:15:03] Adam: Sounds very official.
[0:15:04 – 0:15:08] Adam: Thank you, Hopalicious, for all your work with the show.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:11] Adam: This is really a treat.
[0:15:11 – 0:15:12] Adam: Appreciate it.
[0:15:13 – 0:15:14] Adam: I’ll try and read my best.
[0:15:14 – 0:15:17] Adam: As everybody who listens to Tumble Home knows, when
[0:15:18 – 0:15:19] Adam: You go with the sipping glasses.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:22] Adam: The reading gets so smooth, it’s almost painful to listen to.
[0:15:22 – 0:15:25] Adam: You might want to take one ear bud out for this one.
[0:15:26 – 0:15:28] Adam: Yeah, maybe just go with one ear for this episode.
[0:15:28 – 0:15:31] Adam: Otherwise, it might just shatter your drums.
[0:15:31 – 0:15:33] Erik: Yeah, or it just might melt your brain.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:33] Erik: Or that.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:35] Erik: Into a smooth paste.
[0:15:35 – 0:15:36] Adam: Yeah, it’s real good.
[0:15:36 – 0:15:36] Adam: Thank you.
[0:15:38 – 0:15:38] Erik: You’re welcome.
[0:15:40 – 0:15:40] Erik: Sam Squatch.
[0:15:41 – 0:15:42] Erik: Dash 22.
[0:15:43 – 0:15:46] Erik: Starting on the Reddit, and you all know what is happening.
[0:15:46 – 0:15:47] Erik: It’s question of the year time.
[0:15:47 – 0:15:48] Erik: Where’d you go?
[0:15:48 – 0:15:50] Erik: What’d you see?
[0:15:50 – 0:15:51] Erik: Haikus?
[0:15:51 – 0:15:52] Erik: Optional?
[0:15:53 – 0:15:56] Erik: Some may say requirement, but no, not.
[0:15:58 – 0:15:58] Erik: Doggo.
[0:15:59 – 0:15:59] Erik: Wife.
[0:15:59 – 0:16:00] Erik: And I…
[0:16:02 – 0:16:08] Erik: Departed from Wood Lake to paddle and portage 50 miles over five days to Seagull Lake.
[0:16:09 – 0:16:11] Erik: No surprise, the park was fantastic.
[0:16:12 – 0:16:13] Erik: The weather was perfect.
[0:16:13 – 0:16:14] Erik: The border lakes were busy.
[0:16:15 – 0:16:20] Erik: It’s amazing to me that so many people have seven other friends that are willing to take on the B-dub.
[0:16:20 – 0:16:22] Erik: Yeah, I feel like that every time I see groups of nine.
[0:16:22 – 0:16:25] Erik: Anytime I see groups of people anywhere, I’m like…
[0:16:25 – 0:16:25] Erik: Anywhere.
[0:16:27 – 0:16:29] Erik: Where do you know all those people from?
[0:16:30 – 0:16:32] Erik: And why would you want to go out into public with them together as a group?
[0:16:34 – 0:16:35] Erik: Especially into the wilderness.
[0:16:35 – 0:16:36] Erik: That’s just…
[0:16:37 – 0:16:38] Erik: Crazy to me.
[0:16:38 – 0:16:38] Adam: Stupifying.
[0:16:39 – 0:16:40] Erik: Stupifying.
[0:16:40 – 0:16:40] Erik: Not stupid.
[0:16:41 – 0:16:42] Erik: It’s just stupifying to me.
[0:16:42 – 0:16:43] Erik: More power to you.
[0:16:43 – 0:16:43] Erik: Have fun.
[0:16:44 – 0:16:52] Erik: Anyway, not once, not twice, but thrice, we caught up with groups consisting of four canoes huddled together route planning.
[0:16:53 – 0:16:53] Erik: That’s in quotes.
[0:16:54 – 0:16:55] Erik: Route planning on the fly?
[0:16:56 – 0:16:56] Erik: I guess.
[0:16:57 – 0:16:58] Erik: Trying to figure out where they’re at.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:01] Adam: Pointing at the horizon.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:06] Erik: All three times we ended up in the middle of what was now a five canoe armada.
[0:17:07 – 0:17:12] Erik: First time it was kind of awkward as they talked over us as we traveled eastward at the same exact speed.
[0:17:13 – 0:17:16] Erik: The next day during the second grouping we started passing the bag of wine.
[0:17:17 – 0:17:21] Erik: The third time, I pulled out my legal Minnesota Mary Jane and lit it up.
[0:17:21 – 0:17:25] Erik: They were all very nice, but clueless to the awkwardness they’d created.
[0:17:25 – 0:17:28] Erik: At the end of the day, we found it to be pretty damn funny.
[0:17:28 – 0:17:33] Erik: It was a great trip with eventually some much-needed solitude after we ditched our oversized groups.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:39] Erik: Yeah, I’ve never gotten intermingling into the…
[0:17:39 – 0:17:41] Adam: Sounds like you got yourself in a bit of a jackpot there.
[0:17:42 – 0:17:44] Erik: Yeah, you got to just take a wider berth.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:45] Erik: Or go faster.
[0:17:45 – 0:17:46] Erik: Or just go faster.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:52] Adam: Usually the way to deal with that is just to paddle real fast and then portage really fast too.
[0:17:52 – 0:17:54] Adam: Both lose them and impress.
[0:17:55 – 0:17:56] Erik: Keep your head down.
[0:17:57 – 0:18:00] Adam: You want to roast those bozos and impress them at the same time.
[0:18:00 – 0:18:01] Adam: Just fly.
[0:18:01 – 0:18:02] Adam: Yeah, let’s go.
[0:18:02 – 0:18:03] Erik: Bozo roasting out there.
[0:18:03 – 0:18:03] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:04 – 0:18:08] Erik: I mean, sometimes it’s nice to have a little interaction with people, but… You gotta read the situation, yeah.
[0:18:09 – 0:18:14] Adam: Sounds like you’re… Usually people out in the middle of a lake in the Boundary Waters are pretty cool as a general rule, so…
[0:18:14 – 0:18:37] Erik: usually that’s kind of a starting point it’s like well you probably are gonna make good friends right yeah we’re okay you’re out here i’m out here there’s without saying anything we kind of have a big thing in common to begin this or nod and paddle and be like all right you’re cool but yeah i get it like that’s awkward i don’t need to spend that much time with you especially if you’re gonna start pulling on maps and really getting into conversation it’s like well yeah
[0:18:38 – 0:18:47] Adam: did they ask to borrow your compass i mean that’s too far too far my compass is in the back of that pack who uses a compass anyway
[0:18:48 – 0:18:49] Adam: I got a whiskey update from Hopalicious.
[0:18:50 – 0:18:50] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:18:50 – 0:18:51] Adam: Live updates.
[0:18:51 – 0:18:55] Adam: It’s 60% rye whiskey, 40% bourbon.
[0:18:55 – 0:18:57] Adam: It’s known as a boo rye.
[0:18:57 – 0:18:58] Erik: A boo rye.
[0:18:59 – 0:18:59] Erik: All right.
[0:19:00 – 0:19:01] Erik: First time ever live update.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:02] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:03] Erik: Thank you, Hopalicious.
[0:19:04 – 0:19:05] Erik: Hey, we’re podcasting right now.
[0:19:05 – 0:19:06] Adam: Hey, get it right.
[0:19:06 – 0:19:10] Adam: I didn’t know Hopalicious had the live feed like that.
[0:19:10 – 0:19:11] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:11 – 0:19:12] Adam: Thank you, Trevor.
[0:19:12 – 0:19:14] Adam: And Trevor’s finally getting together.
[0:19:14 – 0:19:16] Adam: He’s got the live feed going here.
[0:19:16 – 0:19:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:16 – 0:19:19] Erik: Too bad he’s morphed back into his cat form.
[0:19:19 – 0:19:23] Adam: Assured us we are live on YouTube or maybe on MeowTube.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:23] Adam: I’m not sure.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:25] Adam: MeowTube.

[0:19:32 – 0:19:32] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:33 – 0:19:36] Adam: Thank you for the catnip.
[0:19:37 – 0:19:38] Adam: Sir Meows.
[0:19:38 – 0:19:39] Adam: Sir Meows a lot.
[0:19:39 – 0:19:40] Adam: Just donate.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:41 – 0:19:43] Adam: The Duke of Paws has donated.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:45] Adam: Thank you very much for the kibble.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:47] Adam: Duke of Paws.
[0:19:47 – 0:19:52] Erik: What’s the fancy wet stuff that they put into the crystal chalice that you always see?
[0:19:53 – 0:19:53] Erik: Fancy Feast.
[0:19:53 – 0:19:54] Erik: It’s Fancy Feast.
[0:19:56 – 0:19:58] Erik: Thank you for the fancy feast, Trevor.
[0:19:58 – 0:19:58] Adam: Fancy feast.
[0:19:59 – 0:20:01] Adam: You really do spoil us, producer now.
[0:20:02 – 0:20:03] Adam: Yeah, he’s worked his way up.
[0:20:03 – 0:20:10] Adam: Fast forward to 2058 or whatever, and Trevor’s worked his way up from intern to executive producer of Tumble Home.
[0:20:10 – 0:20:11] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:11 – 0:20:13] Adam: And we’re feeding him fancy feast.
[0:20:15 – 0:20:17] Erik: It’s glistening so much, that fancy feast.
[0:20:18 – 0:20:20] Adam: Your whiskers are looking lovely tonight.
[0:20:20 – 0:20:21] Adam: Thank you very much.
[0:20:21 – 0:20:25] Adam: Next up on the show, Cabin After, dear friend of the show.
[0:20:26 – 0:20:36] Adam: Over the 4th of July, my wife and I did the Entry Point 14 loop of Loon, Bear Trek, Finger, Gibi, Oyster, and Shell.
[0:20:37 – 0:20:38] Adam: It was incredibly hot and buggy.
[0:20:39 – 0:20:44] Adam: We bought two original bug shirts for the trip, and they were the MVP.
[0:20:45 – 0:20:47] Adam: I hadn’t been through Shell in a couple years.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:51] Adam: That beaver dam portage into Pawness has completely closed off the river.
[0:20:52 – 0:20:56] Adam: You now walk right across the river bedrock, and it’s incredible.
[0:20:57 – 0:21:02] Adam: Also, the southeast side of Upper Pawness has been completely grown over with lily pads and muck.
[0:21:02 – 0:21:03] Adam: The end.
[0:21:03 – 0:21:04] Adam: And I did add the end there.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:06] Adam: Thank you for the comment, cabin after.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:12] Adam: Yeah, well, you got a little extra bedrock, but then a little bit more muck.
[0:21:13 – 0:21:14] Adam: Paw Ness update.
[0:21:15 – 0:21:16] Adam: Ain’t that just the way.
[0:21:16 – 0:21:18] Adam: Yeah, up there by Oyster, huh?
[0:21:19 – 0:21:19] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:21] Erik: Well, Paw Ness is down here.
[0:21:22 – 0:21:27] Erik: It’s just like one kind of major entry point over from the…
[0:21:29 – 0:21:33] Erik: Nina Moose entry point, so beware all Pawness entry.
[0:21:33 – 0:21:34] Erik: I mean, who knows, though?
[0:21:34 – 0:21:36] Adam: Watch Upper Pawness.
[0:21:36 – 0:21:41] Adam: This is 25 days ago, a pretty recent recon from the 4th of July this year.
[0:21:41 – 0:21:44] Erik: By the time anybody else gets up there next spring, I’m sure it’ll be…
[0:21:44 – 0:21:46] Erik: It could be… Who knows?
[0:21:46 – 0:21:48] Adam: You never know what the beavers are up to, as we learned.
[0:21:49 – 0:21:57] Adam: They can be a formidable pack, maintaining their water level one day, and then the next…
[0:21:58 – 0:21:59] Adam: Like that?
[0:21:59 – 0:22:00] Erik: They’re gone.
[0:22:00 – 0:22:00] Erik: They’re gone.
[0:22:02 – 0:22:07] Adam: Next up on the show, oh my, Dirty Dodd Bod 5-2-3.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:09] Erik: Was there always the 5-2-3?
[0:22:09 – 0:22:11] Erik: Must be from Cincinnati, I think.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:11] Erik: Ah.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:13] Erik: What’s the chili?
[0:22:14 – 0:22:15] Erik: Skyline.
[0:22:15 – 0:22:22] Erik: He loves his watery, sugar-watery meat sauce on cold noodles.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:27] Adam: Next up on the show, dear friend of the show, Dirty Dodd Bod 5-2-3.
[0:22:28 – 0:22:30] Adam: It’s a haiku, baby.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:30] Adam: Let’s go.
[0:22:33 – 0:22:34] Adam: Trip to Big Winchy.
[0:22:35 – 0:22:37] Adam: Mysterious flash in the sky.
[0:22:38 – 0:22:40] Adam: No fire, no problem.
[0:22:42 – 0:22:43] Adam: I can do better.
[0:22:43 – 0:22:43] Adam: I can do better.
[0:22:44 – 0:22:45] Adam: Give me one more shot at it, Eric.
[0:22:46 – 0:22:47] Adam: Can I get a second run?
[0:22:47 – 0:22:48] Erik: All right, fine.
[0:22:50 – 0:22:51] Adam: Trip to Big Winchy.
[0:22:52 – 0:22:54] Adam: Mysterious flash in sky.
[0:22:55 – 0:22:57] Adam: No fire, no problem.
[0:22:58 – 0:22:59] Adam: I wonder what the flash was.
[0:23:00 – 0:23:01] Erik: Could have been Big Winchie.
[0:23:01 – 0:23:02] Erik: That’s close enough.
[0:23:02 – 0:23:04] Erik: You get some right clouds.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:06] Erik: If it was just one flash, then who knows?
[0:23:06 – 0:23:07] Adam: Grand Marais International.
[0:23:07 – 0:23:08] Adam: Just thinking it could be the airport.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:11] Adam: Grand Marais International, probably.
[0:23:11 – 0:23:12] Erik: We’ve seen that.
[0:23:12 – 0:23:13] Adam: I’ve seen the flash on Poplar.
[0:23:14 – 0:23:14] Erik: We’ve seen that.
[0:23:14 – 0:23:17] Erik: Yeah, I was going to say halfway up the Gunflint Trail, Winchie’s south of there.
[0:23:19 – 0:23:20] Adam: No fire, no problem.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:21] Adam: Love it.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:22] Erik: Not for everybody.
[0:23:24 – 0:23:24] Adam: All right.
[0:23:25 – 0:23:26] Adam: No fire.
[0:23:26 – 0:23:29] Adam: This next commenter is not doing a haiku.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:30] Erik: Nah, yeah.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:31] Erik: Haiku?
[0:23:31 – 0:23:31] Erik: Nah.
[0:23:33 – 0:23:34] Erik: Eagle, 98.
[0:23:36 – 0:23:37] Erik: Minnesota.
[0:23:37 – 0:23:39] Erik: Is the MN always there?
[0:23:39 – 0:23:40] Erik: Haikus.
[0:23:41 – 0:23:41] Erik: Nah.
[0:23:42 – 0:23:46] Erik: I’m not going to be concise about the park, and I like hearing details from everyone.
[0:23:46 – 0:23:50] Erik: Anyways, so take a swig and paddle along with me.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:51] Erik: All right.
[0:23:52 – 0:24:02] Erik: In August, my brother and I took my two boys, 10 and 7, in at Gunflint and paddled to Hungry Jack Outfitters over four days, three nights, which was all new waters for me.
[0:24:02 – 0:24:07] Erik: We got dropped off at Heston’s and then paddled under overcast skies to Bridal Falls.
[0:24:07 – 0:24:09] Erik: I wasn’t expecting it to be so wide.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:18] Erik: I wish I could have found my way to the top to see the waters as they were flowing to the edge before the falls, but it seems really wide from down below.
[0:24:18 – 0:24:19] Erik: That’s a very wide falls.
[0:24:20 – 0:24:23] Erik: Yeah, it’s kind of just like over a whole hillside, really.
[0:24:23 – 0:24:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:24 – 0:24:26] Erik: It’s always different, too, depending on how much water is out there.
[0:24:26 – 0:24:28] Adam: Yeah, that’s one of the best falls.
[0:24:29 – 0:24:29] Adam: It’s fun.
[0:24:30 – 0:24:31] Adam: See your falls ranker episode.
[0:24:31 – 0:24:31] Adam: You can really get in there.
[0:24:32 – 0:24:32] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:24:32 – 0:24:33] Adam: You can get underneath it.
[0:24:33 – 0:24:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:24:34 – 0:24:40] Erik: Kids had fun scrambling over rocks before we left and set up camp on the island furthest to the northeast.
[0:24:40 – 0:24:45] Erik: Charcuterie and wine hit the spot as we played the travel-size version of Catan.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:46] Erik: Ooh.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:52] Erik: And then enjoyed switching between northern and southern stargazing when the skies cleared.
[0:24:53 – 0:25:00] Erik: Day two, we headed over to south, stopping at the height of land to officially dub my crew Voyageurs with a cedar branch.
[0:25:01 – 0:25:01] Adam: Yes.
[0:25:02 – 0:25:12] Erik: Light storms blew up past that afternoon, blew past that afternoon as we relaxed around camp and explored the surrounding woods at South Lake number six.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:13] Adam: South six.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:14] Erik: South six.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:18] Erik: Day three, we moved campsites to rows across from the stairway portage.
[0:25:19 – 0:25:21] Erik: We made sure… Oh, I don’t see…
[0:25:21 – 0:25:23] Erik: I’ve just done a quick scan.
[0:25:23 – 0:25:25] Erik: I don’t see any…
[0:25:26 – 0:25:33] Erik: Yeah, made sure to get the bear bag hung with reports that Yogi was in the area, but I don’t see any references to Brutus.
[0:25:34 – 0:25:36] Erik: Or Gerald.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:38] Erik: Or Gerald, yeah.
[0:25:38 – 0:25:39] Erik: How do you say that?
[0:25:39 – 0:25:40] Erik: Gerald.
[0:25:41 – 0:25:42] Erik: Not reported here.
[0:25:43 – 0:25:47] Erik: The South Rose Vista didn’t disappoint after Eric talked it up way back in episode 037.
[0:25:49 – 0:25:50] Adam: Wow, those were the days, huh?
[0:25:50 – 0:25:53] Erik: I was younger and so much more wise back then.
[0:25:54 – 0:25:57] Erik: Yes, if I said it, it must be true.
[0:25:57 – 0:25:58] Erik: It’s true.
[0:25:58 – 0:26:03] Erik: We hit both vistas on either side of the stairway portage, too, before heading back to camp and playing more Catan.
[0:26:05 – 0:26:08] Erik: Day four, we exited through Duncan to Hungry Jack and headed home.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:12] Erik: Falls and vistas along this route will be talked about for many years to come.
[0:26:12 – 0:26:13] Erik: That’s a good route.
[0:26:13 – 0:26:14] Erik: Solid route.
[0:26:14 – 0:26:19] Adam: I never thought about just leaving from Gunflint on like a multi-day trip like that.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:21] Adam: Multi-trip.
[0:26:21 – 0:26:22] Adam: That’s a beautiful route.
[0:26:22 – 0:26:23] Adam: Multi-trip deal.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:26] Adam: That’s a multi-trip kind of deal there, Wade.
[0:26:26 – 0:26:28] Erik: In September, multi-trip deal.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:28] Erik: Wow.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:31] Erik: My friend and I headed back into the park for our 10th trip in 10 years.
[0:26:32 – 0:26:32] Erik: Yes.
[0:26:33 – 0:26:37] Erik: To celebrate, we headed back to our first PWCA Lake Adams.
[0:26:38 – 0:26:39] Erik: Lake.
[0:26:39 – 0:26:39] AdamPewPew: Your lake.
[0:26:40 – 0:26:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:41 – 0:26:48] Erik: Ten years ago, we approached it from Kawishawi, so this year we decided to approach from Snowbank, since that would be new waters for both of us.
[0:26:49 – 0:26:56] Erik: We drove up from the cities and were on the water by 2 p.m. and ended up setting up camp on Jordan, a campsite just north of the portage to Cattyman.
[0:26:57 – 0:26:58] Adam: Some pictos up there.
[0:26:59 – 0:27:01] Erik: Along the way, we stopped at Cattyman Falls.
[0:27:02 – 0:27:03] Adam: Ah, Cattyman Falls.
[0:27:03 – 0:27:05] Erik: Oh, Cattyman Falls.
[0:27:06 – 0:27:06] Erik: Can’t trust them.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:09] Erik: It was a nice little falls after my August trip.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:14] Erik: I was spoiled, so this one merely got a smile of appreciation and a quick photo before we moved on.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:18] Erik: Yeah, just a little smile and nod.
[0:27:18 – 0:27:20] Adam: Remember those, like, disposable cameras?
[0:27:20 – 0:27:21] Erik: Oh, of course.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:21] Erik: One of them.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:23] Adam: You just kind of hold it up.
[0:27:23 – 0:27:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:27] Erik: Yeah, that’s about it.
[0:27:28 – 0:27:30] Erik: The next morning, we made the push from Jordan to Adams.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:35] Erik: We were ready to be done when we made it to Adams and headed to the campsite we had camped at 10 years ago.
[0:27:35 – 0:27:37] Erik: Was it on the island?
[0:27:37 – 0:27:39] Erik: It says that it would be campsite three or four.
[0:27:41 – 0:27:42] Erik: On the Danielson scale?
[0:27:42 – 0:27:43] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:44 – 0:27:44] Erik: Makes sense.
[0:27:44 – 0:27:52] Erik: Can’t remember if you number north or south first, but it was the more northern of the two on that western shoreline, so not the island site.
[0:27:52 – 0:27:52] Erik: All right.
[0:27:53 – 0:27:58] Erik: Anyway, I had marked that campsite a four on Paddle Planner many years ago based on what I remembered from my first trip.
[0:27:59 – 0:28:06] Erik: And wow, was it disappointing to paddle up and find it small, brushy, and barely warranting a two.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:07] Erik: Wow.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:08] Erik: Yeah, it’s crazy.
[0:28:08 – 0:28:10] Adam: Perspectives change on those.
[0:28:10 – 0:28:16] Erik: The images that you build up in your memory, specifically as they relate to Bon Jovi’s campsites.
[0:28:16 – 0:28:21] Adam: A four when you’re like 19 years old can also turn into a two by the time you’re 30.
[0:28:22 – 0:28:23] Adam: You never know.
[0:28:23 – 0:28:24] Erik: No, it always goes that way.
[0:28:24 – 0:28:26] Erik: Everything diminishes as you get older.
[0:28:26 – 0:28:26] Erik: You think so?
[0:28:27 – 0:28:27] Erik: Well, I mean.
[0:28:28 – 0:28:32] Adam: What about the really good ones that were actually good and then you come back later and you’re like, damn.
[0:28:32 – 0:28:33] Adam: This was good.
[0:28:33 – 0:28:34] Adam: This was good.
[0:28:34 – 0:28:36] Adam: That’s a five and a half banger.
[0:28:36 – 0:28:37] Erik: It probably does just run the gamut.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:43] Erik: Have you guys ever visited a campsite and then returned to later realize you remember it being way nicer than it was?
[0:28:46 – 0:28:47] Erik: Yeah, that was kind of my point.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:49] Erik: I don’t think that it typically goes that way for me.
[0:28:51 – 0:28:52] Adam: For the good ones, it does, though.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:53] Adam: Yeah, maybe.
[0:28:53 – 0:28:55] Adam: Then you see, like, damn, that was really good.
[0:28:55 – 0:28:59] Erik: But it’s never as good as you have the memory in your head, for me at least.
[0:28:59 – 0:29:02] Adam: Well, nothing’s ever as good as the first time you stayed there either, so there’s that.
[0:29:03 – 0:29:03] Erik: It’s tough.
[0:29:04 – 0:29:11] Erik: It’s got to be, yeah, I mean, I don’t know what scenario would lead me to end up at a campsite where I was like, I was way off.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:14] Erik: This is a five-star site, even though at the time I thought it was a one.
[0:29:14 – 0:29:15] Erik: Usually it’s the other way around.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:16] Adam: Right, sure, but…
[0:29:17 – 0:29:20] Adam: Usually you got it right the first time and the second time.
[0:29:20 – 0:29:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:31] Erik: But I’m going to chalk it up to my rookie eyes not knowing what a truly great campsite looked like as well as the fun we had while we stayed there back in 2013.
[0:29:31 – 0:29:32] Erik: There you go.
[0:29:32 – 0:29:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:33 – 0:29:37] Erik: Forgoing our nostalgia, we set up on the island instead for two nights of fishing and fun.
[0:29:38 – 0:29:38] Erik: There you go.
[0:29:38 – 0:29:39] Erik: They did another one.
[0:29:39 – 0:29:39] Adam: Adam’s Island.
[0:29:39 – 0:29:40] Adam: There you go.
[0:29:40 – 0:29:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:42] Erik: Bobby… Bobby’s Island.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:43] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:43 – 0:29:43] Erik: Bobby and Rex.
[0:29:44 – 0:29:44] Erik: That’s…
[0:29:45 – 0:29:46] Adam: The origin story.
[0:29:46 – 0:29:47] Adam: The origin story.
[0:29:47 – 0:29:48] Adam: It’s all about the underwear.
[0:29:49 – 0:29:50] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:50 – 0:29:52] Adam: We’ll never forget that pair of tighty-whities.
[0:29:54 – 0:30:00] Erik: With winds gusting to 30 miles an hour out of the east, gave us an unlikely push all the way out to Lake One.
[0:30:00 – 0:30:01] Erik: Wow, that’s nice.
[0:30:01 – 0:30:02] Adam: Yeesh.
[0:30:02 – 0:30:08] Erik: Last two days, that was Mother Nature balancing the scales for us after she dumped three and a half inches of rain on us last year.
[0:30:10 – 0:30:16] Erik: Got a fun fact, bullet point stats from decades of trips.
[0:30:16 – 0:30:20] Erik: We’ve got 19 trips total, 675 miles, 200 named lakes paddled, 17 named rivers paddled.
[0:30:27 – 0:30:34] Erik: Longest day traveled, 24 miles, West Bearskin to Moose, with a stop on the Border Rock Trail for the Mountain Lake Vista.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:35] Erik: Yeah, that’s a big day.
[0:30:35 – 0:30:36] Erik: Wow.
[0:30:36 – 0:30:39] Erik: Shortest day, 3.5 miles.
[0:30:39 – 0:30:46] Erik: 24 different tripmates, 23 entry points visited, 43 campsites, and 59 nights in the barter waters.
[0:30:46 – 0:30:47] Adam: You know I love the data.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:50] Erik: Hot stats.
[0:30:51 – 0:30:54] Erik: Thank you so much, Eagle98mn.
[0:30:54 – 0:30:56] Erik: Heck of a response.
[0:30:56 – 0:30:57] Erik: Very thorough.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:04] Erik: So glad my… That haiku is straight cash money.
[0:31:05 – 0:31:07] Erik: Nah, no haikus for EagleNM.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:09] Adam: The longest haiku I’ve ever heard.
[0:31:09 – 0:31:11] Erik: Yeah, that was a very long, wordy haiku.
[0:31:14 – 0:31:19] Adam: Next up on the show, dear friend of the show, Fazmada, 13 days ago.
[0:31:21 – 0:31:21] Adam: Is this real?
[0:31:22 – 0:31:22] Adam: Yes.
[0:31:22 – 0:31:23] Adam: Is the internet on?
[0:31:23 – 0:31:24] Adam: 13 days ago, for real?
[0:31:24 – 0:31:25] Erik: For real.
[0:31:27 – 0:31:36] Adam: 2023 was a light year for me, but in September I did a spontaneous trip to the Island River entry with a friend who could spare two nights to get away.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:41] Adam: I didn’t have high expectations, and I was very pleasantly surprised.
[0:31:42 – 0:31:48] Adam: We camped at the first site where the Isabella and Island Rivers meet and did a day trip up to Rice Lake during our one full day.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:49] Adam: Almost absurd.
[0:32:07 – 0:32:22] Adam: We discovered that the campsite immediately west of Rice Lake is one of the coolest sites we’ve seen with a unique firing and an open site surrounded by large rocks, including a massive erratic that can be climbed for a spectacular view of the river.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:23] AdamPewPew: Wow.
[0:32:24 – 0:32:28] Adam: My friend wants to go back and do more in that area, and I agree.
[0:32:28 – 0:32:41] Adam: We were kept company all weekend by tundra swans and bald eagles, got visited by an endangered rusty patch bumblebee, and my friend spotted a pine marten by our camp as well.
[0:32:43 – 0:32:50] Adam: The nearby pictos didn’t make the cut, but we will be going back to explore that area more thoroughly next year.
[0:32:51 – 0:32:55] Adam: I think this is the first instance of a bumblebee being shouted out on Tumblehome.
[0:32:55 – 0:32:59] Erik: I think, yeah, any insects are usually being derided.
[0:32:59 – 0:33:02] Erik: It’s an endangered rusty patch bumblebee.
[0:33:02 – 0:33:02] Erik: Crazy.
[0:33:02 – 0:33:03] Erik: Is there any books on this?
[0:33:03 – 0:33:05] Erik: I’ve never heard of it.
[0:33:06 – 0:33:07] Adam: Must be endangered.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:09] Adam: Yeah, the Island River.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:11] Adam: It’s down there.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:12] Adam: It’s down there in the middle of nowhere.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:13] Adam: Hard to get to.
[0:33:13 – 0:33:13] Adam: Soft underbelly.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:20] Adam: I tried to get into Comfort Lake with Natalie this year, and it was rough country back there.
[0:33:21 – 0:33:22] Adam: Yeah.
[0:33:22 – 0:33:24] Adam: Scraping the sides of the Pontiac vibe.
[0:33:24 – 0:33:25] Adam: I’ll tell you what.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:27] Erik: Burned, blowdown, lightly traveled.
[0:33:27 – 0:33:28] Adam: Yeah.
[0:33:28 – 0:33:29] Adam: Denied.
[0:33:29 – 0:33:30] Adam: Like nobody’s in there.
[0:33:30 – 0:33:33] Adam: And we ran into like a blown out culvert, you know.
[0:33:33 – 0:33:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:33:33 – 0:33:39] Adam: I was trying to get to Comfort, but I think, yeah, up by Isabella, there’s reasonable entries there.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:47] Adam: I believe Phasmata had posted pictures of this trip with a little bit of like shouting out the, you know, the Island River area.
[0:33:48 – 0:33:48] Adam: It’s pretty cool.
[0:33:49 – 0:33:50] Adam: Old Pagami burn there.
[0:33:51 – 0:33:51] Adam: Yeah.
[0:33:51 – 0:33:53] Adam: Well, now it is old, I guess.
[0:33:53 – 0:33:53] Adam: Not that old.
[0:33:54 – 0:33:55] Adam: Yeah, it ain’t that old.
[0:33:55 – 0:33:58] Erik: You can still see the remnants, obviously, but yeah.
[0:33:58 – 0:33:59] Erik: What is that?
[0:33:59 – 0:34:00] Erik: 15 years old now?
[0:34:03 – 0:34:03] Erik: Something like that.
[0:34:05 – 0:34:05] Adam: 2008?
[0:34:05 – 0:34:06] Adam: 2008?
[0:34:09 – 0:34:09] Adam: The Pagme?
[0:34:09 – 0:34:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:10 – 0:34:11] Erik: I think it was 11.
[0:34:11 – 0:34:12] Erik: 2010, 11.
[0:34:13 – 0:34:14] Erik: I think it was 12 or 13 years now.
[0:34:14 – 0:34:17] Erik: Yeah, it was the same year we did our Quetico trip, wasn’t it?
[0:34:17 – 0:34:20] Adam: Yeah, it was early.
[0:34:20 – 0:34:24] Adam: The next comment is from the person who sent the long email.
[0:34:24 – 0:34:26] Adam: We’re going to skip that comment.
[0:34:26 – 0:34:26] Adam: Wow.
[0:34:27 – 0:34:31] Adam: And I will take the next comment from Aldi1.
[0:34:32 – 0:34:32] Adam: All right.
[0:34:33 – 0:34:33] Adam: If you’re okay with that.
[0:34:34 – 0:34:35] Erik: I guess it’s going to have to do.
[0:34:36 – 0:34:45] Adam: Aldiwan, 12 days ago, first trip was to Gull Lake via Mudro in May.
[0:34:45 – 0:34:47] Adam: Saw the northern lights for the first time.
[0:34:48 – 0:34:48] Adam: Amazing.
[0:34:49 – 0:34:53] Adam: Also, met Vinnie Mink, the local mink.
[0:34:54 – 0:34:55] Erik: Oh, no, another named animal.
[0:34:55 – 0:34:55] Erik: Minks.
[0:34:56 – 0:34:56] Adam: Minks.
[0:34:57 – 0:34:58] Adam: Vinnie Mink.
[0:34:58 – 0:34:59] Adam: Stinko or Vinnie?
[0:35:01 – 0:35:04] Adam: Yeah, he’s playing bass in, what was the name of the band?
[0:35:04 – 0:35:05] Adam: I don’t remember.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:07] Erik: What was that?
[0:35:07 – 0:35:08] Adam: Jeff Stinko’s band.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:10] Erik: I don’t even remember what that was a reference to.
[0:35:10 – 0:35:12] Adam: No, no, no, no.
[0:35:12 – 0:35:15] Adam: Second trip was to Insula in August.
[0:35:15 – 0:35:19] Adam: This would be the 10th year anniversary trip with the original crew.
[0:35:19 – 0:35:20] Adam: The original crew.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:21] Adam: The OGC.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:22] AdamPewPew: Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:35:22 – 0:35:26] Adam: Huzzah, huzzah, and a big chee-hoo.
[0:35:28 – 0:35:32] Adam: The other canoe in our group hit a rock on lake one and it punctured the canoe.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:33] Erik: No, no, that’s not a chute.
[0:35:33 – 0:35:35] Adam: Pretty decent gash.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:37] Adam: Several inches of water got in.
[0:35:37 – 0:35:41] Adam: When we got to the first portage, we did our best to duct tape it up.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:45] Adam: We had a comical amount of duct tape, enough to make a belt for a mouse.
[0:35:47 – 0:35:47] Adam: It worked well enough.
[0:35:47 – 0:35:48] Erik: Didn’t have much.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:53] Adam: It worked well enough until we came across another group with tape a couple portages later.
[0:35:53 – 0:35:58] Adam: $90 patch fee is upon return for the tape.
[0:35:59 – 0:36:00] Adam: Oh, so it was a rental?
[0:36:01 – 0:36:04] Adam: You rented tape on the numbers chain?
[0:36:04 – 0:36:07] Erik: Or was it a $90 patch job from the outfitter?
[0:36:07 – 0:36:09] Adam: Oh, maybe that’s what we’re talking about here.
[0:36:10 – 0:36:11] Adam: That makes more sense, Eric.
[0:36:12 – 0:36:13] Adam: That’s a pretty screaming deal.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:14 – 0:36:16] Adam: Food and gear highlights for Maldi One.
[0:36:17 – 0:36:20] Adam: We brought a cast iron on both trips, which is new for us.
[0:36:21 – 0:36:21] Adam: Wow.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:22] Adam: Game changer.
[0:36:23 – 0:36:24] Adam: I did not carry it, however.
[0:36:25 – 0:36:29] Adam: I believe we may be the first group to eat tuna tartare out in the Boundary Waters.
[0:36:30 – 0:36:33] Adam: A nice little appetizer while sipping margaritas.
[0:36:33 – 0:36:34] Adam: Wow.
[0:36:34 – 0:36:35] Adam: Very elegant.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:36] Adam: High class.
[0:36:36 – 0:36:36] Adam: Tartare.
[0:36:36 – 0:36:37] Erik: Tuna tartare.
[0:36:37 – 0:36:39] Adam: Yeah, you spelled tartare correctly as well.
[0:36:39 – 0:36:40] Adam: I’m very impressed.
[0:36:40 – 0:36:41] Adam: Thank you for the comment.
[0:36:42 – 0:36:44] Adam: Huzzah, huzzah, indeed.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:44] Adam: Tar-tar.
[0:36:45 – 0:36:46] Adam: And chi-hoo.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:46] Adam: Yes.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:47] Adam: And tar-tar.
[0:36:48 – 0:36:51] Adam: All our favorite sounds to make on Tumble Home in one comment.
[0:36:52 – 0:36:53] Erik: Chi-hoo and tar-tar.
[0:36:53 – 0:36:54] Adam: Yeah, what a beautiful comment.
[0:36:56 – 0:36:57] Adam: Oh, that’s pretty impressive.
[0:36:58 – 0:36:58] Adam: Mudro, though.
[0:36:58 – 0:37:01] Adam: Boy, it just reminds me that we didn’t actually go to Mudro.
[0:37:01 – 0:37:03] Erik: It just reminds me of our own personal failures.
[0:37:04 – 0:37:06] Adam: What is the deal?
[0:37:07 – 0:37:08] Adam: Why so much wind?
[0:37:08 – 0:37:08] Adam: Wind.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:12] Adam: We should have more days off, Eric.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:14] Erik: It doesn’t make any sense.
[0:37:14 – 0:37:15] Erik: No, it never does.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:18] Erik: November 30th.
[0:37:19 – 0:37:20] Erik: Paddle faster.
[0:37:20 – 0:37:22] Erik: Haiku.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:28] Erik: Quetico dreams turned into 10-day basswood float.
[0:37:29 – 0:37:31] Erik: At least was canoe trip.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:33] AdamPewPew: Hmm.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:35] Erik: So didn’t end up going to Quetico.
[0:37:36 – 0:37:38] Erik: Just floating around on basswood for 10 days.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:40] Erik: With a bunch of chains.
[0:37:41 – 0:37:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:46] Erik: That wasn’t mentioned, but I could sense that there was chains involved.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:46] Erik: Yeah.
[0:37:48 – 0:37:48] Erik: Wow.
[0:37:49 – 0:37:49] Adam: What was the last line?
[0:37:50 – 0:37:51] Adam: At least it was a canoe trip.
[0:37:52 – 0:37:52] Erik: Oh, there we go.
[0:37:52 – 0:37:53] Erik: Yeah, it was.
[0:37:54 – 0:37:56] Erik: You’re on the border waters by definition.
[0:37:58 – 0:37:58] Erik: The most.
[0:37:58 – 0:38:00] Adam: The Quetico Superior, my friend.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:01] Erik: The borderiest of waters.
[0:38:02 – 0:38:02] Erik: Basswood.
[0:38:03 – 0:38:04] Adam: You’re on Basswood.
[0:38:05 – 0:38:06] Adam: You know what Basswood even means?
[0:38:08 – 0:38:10] Erik: I didn’t really think it had a deeper meaning.
[0:38:11 – 0:38:13] Adam: It’s like white trees, basically.
[0:38:13 – 0:38:14] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:38:14 – 0:38:15] Erik: Isn’t it just a kind of tree?
[0:38:16 – 0:38:18] Adam: Yeah, there’s not actually Basswood trees.
[0:38:18 – 0:38:20] Adam: It’s just a name for a tree.
[0:38:21 – 0:38:44] Adam: so like a colloquialism for a tree i don’t know i remember it from portage into the past they’re like what is the basswood tree they’re debating on what it could have meant why would you name a lake basswood there’s no such thing it is what are you thinking such a huge and beautiful lake like what is the basswood yeah the basswood is um it’s a state of mind he’s touching his yeah he’s touching his temple it’s a state of mind
[0:38:45 – 0:38:46] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:47] Adam: Buckle up.
[0:38:48 – 0:38:55] Adam: I was trying to explain to somebody today the movie Escanaba in the moonlight, and they had no idea what I was talking about.
[0:38:56 – 0:38:56] Adam: It was quite fun.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:00] Erik: Yeah.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:02] Erik: That’s a pretty…
[0:39:02 – 0:39:04] Adam: I started out trying to explain the Buckless Yooper.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:05] Adam: Sure.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:09] Adam: It’s the guy who’s never shot a buck going on a hunting trip with his Yooper buddies.
[0:39:09 – 0:39:11] Adam: You’ve never seen Escanaba in the moonlight?
[0:39:11 – 0:39:12] Erik: I don’t think it’s a movie that’s been well…
[0:39:13 – 0:39:14] Erik: Viewed by many people.
[0:39:14 – 0:39:16] Adam: You don’t know about Jiminer from Indominy?
[0:39:19 – 0:39:20] Erik: Jiminer!
[0:39:22 – 0:39:23] Erik: You remember Eric, you know.
[0:39:23 – 0:39:24] Erik: Oh, I do.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:32] Erik: I’m just thinking, I think the per capita tumble homie I’m sure is high for that movie, but the general public is probably quite low.
[0:39:33 – 0:39:33] Adam: Perhaps.
[0:39:34 – 0:39:40] Adam: Anyways, the next comment is from TheBigSag, and it starts with, How is she going by?
[0:39:40 – 0:39:41] Erik: How is she going by?
[0:39:41 – 0:39:42] Adam: How is she going by, Eric?
[0:39:43 – 0:39:44] Adam: Five days ago.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:47] Adam: How’s she going by?
[0:39:47 – 0:39:52] Adam: I’m the lucky bastard that finds a way to make it into the park quite a bit.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:54] Adam: And 2023 did not disappoint.
[0:39:55 – 0:39:58] Adam: 29 glorious nights in the boundary waters.
[0:39:58 – 0:40:00] Adam: I’m sorry, the border waters.
[0:40:00 – 0:40:01] Adam: It’s like almost a whole month.
[0:40:01 – 0:40:06] Adam: At 300 plus miles and no grizzly attacks and no canoes lost.
[0:40:06 – 0:40:07] Adam: That’s pretty good.
[0:40:09 – 0:40:10] Adam: A few highlights.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:11] Adam: All right.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:12] Adam: Are you ready for this, Eric?
[0:40:12 – 0:40:12] Adam: Okay.
[0:40:14 – 0:40:16] Adam: I’m going to have a sip before we start the highlights.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:21] Erik: Yeah, I saw the response before I switched the computer.
[0:40:21 – 0:40:22] Erik: It looks hefty.
[0:40:24 – 0:40:28] Adam: As you can tell, Big Zag, I’m both impressed and I’m a little jealous.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:31] Adam: I’ll take a moment.
[0:40:32 – 0:40:32] Adam: A few highlights.
[0:40:33 – 0:40:36] Adam: May solo out of Sawbell just after ice out.
[0:40:36 – 0:40:40] Adam: Cherokee Loop, damn, the water was high and fast.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:44] Adam: Just a few days after the WTIP guys had their scare.
[0:40:44 – 0:40:47] Adam: New appreciation for safety and taking your time.
[0:40:48 – 0:40:48] Adam: Two.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:57] Adam: spent some time in the Vento in June, and received warnings left and right about B-B-B-B-B-Brutus.
[0:40:57 – 0:40:58] Erik: Uh-oh, Brutus is back.
[0:40:59 – 0:41:01] Adam: Every group we encountered had a story about this bear.
[0:41:02 – 0:41:07] Adam: We arrived at Clearwater, number six, mid-afternoon as a dad and son were leaving.
[0:41:08 – 0:41:12] Adam: We ain’t staying at no site with bears, they told us.
[0:41:13 – 0:41:19] Adam: As we scoped out the site, we found the word bear written in two-inch letters using sticks and twigs.
[0:41:19 – 0:41:21] Adam: I think that says two-foot letters.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:22] Erik: Wow.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:24] Adam: That’s even, eh, that’s maybe less scary.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:32] Adam: As we scoped out the site, we found the word bear written in two-foot letters using sticks and twigs.
[0:41:32 – 0:41:32] Adam: Nice.
[0:41:32 – 0:41:34] Adam: I don’t think I got either of those right.
[0:41:34 – 0:41:35] Adam: I’m scared.
[0:41:35 – 0:41:36] Adam: Stwigs and twigs?
[0:41:36 – 0:41:37] UNKNOWN: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
[0:41:38 – 0:41:40] Adam: The letters made for some nice firewood that night.
[0:41:40 – 0:41:41] Adam: There we go.
[0:41:41 – 0:41:44] Adam: Just immediately heard the warning.
[0:41:45 – 0:41:50] Adam: Despite hearing more of the same over the four-day trip, we never saw Brutus.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:51] Erik: Wow.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:52] Erik: Disappointing.
[0:41:52 – 0:41:55] Adam: Hit the numbers chain in July with seven other dudes.
[0:41:56 – 0:41:57] Adam: Lake won the snow bank.
[0:41:58 – 0:42:01] Adam: I’ve never seen that park so busy, and it was annoying.
[0:42:02 – 0:42:05] Adam: Couldn’t swing a dead cat without running into another large group.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:09] Adam: Nearly every portage had two to three groups at a time.
[0:42:09 – 0:42:13] Adam: Campsites were scarce, and we saw many groups camped at portages.
[0:42:15 – 0:42:16] Adam: Despite my whining.
[0:42:17 – 0:42:17] Adam: When was this?
[0:42:17 – 0:42:18] Adam: It was a great trip.
[0:42:19 – 0:42:20] Adam: Mid-July.
[0:42:21 – 0:42:22] Adam: Numbers chain in July?
[0:42:22 – 0:42:22] Adam: Yeah.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:23] Erik: Well, what do you expect?
[0:42:23 – 0:42:24] Adam: It was a great trip.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:26] Adam: Solid weather, an excellent company.
[0:42:26 – 0:42:27] Adam: Yeah, that’s July.
[0:42:27 – 0:42:28] Erik: Yeah, in the numbers chain.
[0:42:29 – 0:42:29] Adam: In the numbers chain.
[0:42:29 – 0:42:30] Adam: But it’s just also July.
[0:42:31 – 0:42:32] Adam: Four.
[0:42:32 – 0:42:35] Adam: Tried out the Snake River entry, number 84.
[0:42:35 – 0:42:37] AdamPewPew: Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:48] Adam: It’s about time somebody brought the Snake River entry on this show.
[0:42:48 – 0:42:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:42:48 – 0:42:49] Adam: Besides us.
[0:42:50 – 0:42:52] Adam: We’re always talking about the Snake River.
[0:42:52 – 0:42:53] Adam: We love it.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:55] Adam: Nobody else ever talks about Snake River.
[0:42:55 – 0:42:56] Erik: I don’t even know where the hell it is.
[0:42:57 – 0:42:57] Erik: It’s down there.
[0:42:58 – 0:42:58] Erik: There it is.
[0:42:58 – 0:42:59] AdamPewPew: I’m pointing right at it.
[0:43:00 – 0:43:04] Adam: He sees it now.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:07] Adam: First time in August with two other dads and our five boys.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:13] Adam: Unique and rewarding, but probably don’t need to do that again when the water is low.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:18] Adam: Fish were practically jumping in the canoe on the Isabella River.
[0:43:18 – 0:43:26] Adam: We were followed nearly the whole trip by a pair of bobby swans that honked annoyingly at all hours of the day.
[0:43:27 – 0:43:32] Adam: I think the swans were pissed about our five human bobbies that were competing for noise domination.
[0:43:34 – 0:43:41] Adam: If anyone listening was in the Gabbro bald eagle area in late August, we are sorry about that.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:42] Erik: All right.
[0:43:42 – 0:43:42] Erik: Thank you.
[0:43:43 – 0:43:45] Adam: And we’d own it.
[0:43:45 – 0:43:46] Erik: Number five.
[0:43:46 – 0:43:47] Erik: Yeah, that’s Snake River.
[0:43:47 – 0:43:48] Erik: Now that’s coming over.
[0:43:48 – 0:43:49] Erik: That’s ringing a bell now.
[0:43:49 – 0:43:53] Erik: That’s where we used to put it for doing dog side runs up into that part.
[0:43:53 – 0:43:54] Adam: There you go.
[0:43:54 – 0:44:02] Adam: You go like Island River, Isabella River, Snake River in a loop until your legs are tired and your dogs are thirsty.
[0:44:04 – 0:44:05] AdamPewPew: Snakes.
[0:44:06 – 0:44:17] Adam: Number five, highlight of the summer was a nine-day trip to the Quetico in mid-September with fellow Tumble Homies, Crawl Space, and Grizzies and Twizzies.
[0:44:17 – 0:44:18] Adam: Dear friends of the show.
[0:44:18 – 0:44:18] Erik: Dear friends.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:19] Adam: We all love them.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:44:20 – 0:44:22] Adam: Absolutely unbelievable.
[0:44:23 – 0:44:32] Adam: Cache Bay Entry, up the Falls Chain, down through Agnes, through Prairie Portage, and back up through the Man Chain.
[0:44:33 – 0:44:34] Erik: Sounds great.
[0:44:34 – 0:44:36] Adam: Definitely a trip to remember.
[0:44:36 – 0:44:38] Adam: Way too many stories for a post.
[0:44:38 – 0:44:40] Adam: Looking forward to Open Water 2024.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:41] Adam: The end.
[0:44:41 – 0:44:41] Adam: And thank you.
[0:44:41 – 0:44:42] Adam: That was a real the end.
[0:44:43 – 0:44:44] Adam: The end.
[0:44:44 – 0:44:44] Adam: Period.
[0:44:44 – 0:44:45] Adam: Five boxes of wine.
[0:44:45 – 0:44:46] Adam: From the author.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:48 – 0:44:50] Adam: It means a lot more when it’s from the author, Eric.
[0:44:51 – 0:44:51] Erik: Yeah.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:52] Erik: Wow.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:54] Adam: That’s quite the Quetico trip.
[0:44:54 – 0:44:56] Adam: False chain, back the man chain.
[0:44:56 – 0:44:58] Adam: You really can’t write it up any better.
[0:44:58 – 0:44:59] Erik: Yeah, that might be like one more trip.
[0:44:59 – 0:45:00] Adam: That might be the best trip ever.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:03] Erik: Before they send you off to the front lines.
[0:45:03 – 0:45:04] Erik: That would be a show.
[0:45:04 – 0:45:05] Erik: Probably.
[0:45:05 – 0:45:06] Adam: You get one route left.
[0:45:06 – 0:45:30] Adam: yeah before you go to the front lines to fight the water wars against the terminator yeah it’s probably that’s yeah that’s on the trail chain a man chain that’s the trip yeah i mean that’s you tell me there’s a better trip out there oh do we get a whole maybe we get 10 days we do the whole hunter’s island yeah and then back through the man chain at the end man chain’s involved in some way
[0:45:30 – 0:45:32] Adam: The man-chain variant of the Hunter’s Island.
[0:45:33 – 0:45:35] Adam: That’s my trip before we go off to fight the Terminator.
[0:45:35 – 0:45:38] Erik: I don’t like the sound of the man-chain variant, though.
[0:45:39 – 0:45:41] Adam: Yeah, it’s not looking good for us.
[0:45:42 – 0:45:44] Adam: If you’re fighting the man-chain variant.
[0:45:44 – 0:45:46] Erik: You need a booster for that.
[0:45:46 – 0:45:47] Adam: You are, yeah.
[0:45:47 – 0:45:47] Adam: Several.
[0:45:48 – 0:45:50] Erik: Musky Eater.
[0:45:50 – 0:45:53] Erik: This is like a run-on haiku.
[0:45:54 – 0:45:55] Erik: Still poetic looking, though.
[0:45:57 – 0:45:58] Erik: Frost river in May.
[0:45:58 – 0:46:00] Erik: Snow on portages.
[0:46:00 – 0:46:01] Erik: Clear skies.
[0:46:02 – 0:46:03] Erik: Northern lights dancing.
[0:46:04 – 0:46:05] Erik: Mudrow.
[0:46:05 – 0:46:06] Erik: Basswood Falls.
[0:46:07 – 0:46:09] Erik: Took the border to crooked.
[0:46:10 – 0:46:11] Erik: Sunburn to cold rain.
[0:46:12 – 0:46:14] Erik: Wife and sons came with.
[0:46:15 – 0:46:17] Erik: Lost on lake one exit.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:20] Erik: Rain and raspberries.
[0:46:21 – 0:46:22] Erik: My first solo trip.
[0:46:23 – 0:46:25] Erik: Enjoyed traveling alone.
[0:46:26 – 0:46:26] Erik: Mudrow.
[0:46:27 – 0:46:28] Erik: Horse.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:29] Erik: Foretown.
[0:46:32 – 0:46:32] Erik: All right.
[0:46:33 – 0:46:34] Erik: Very nice.
[0:46:34 – 0:46:35] Adam: Sunburned to what?
[0:46:36 – 0:46:38] Erik: Sunburned to what?
[0:46:38 – 0:46:39] Erik: Rain?
[0:46:39 – 0:46:39] Erik: Cold rain?
[0:46:40 – 0:46:41] Erik: Sunburned to cold rain.
[0:46:41 – 0:46:44] Adam: That’s a beautiful turn of phrase right there.
[0:46:44 – 0:46:44] Adam: Yep.
[0:46:46 – 0:46:47] Adam: It does give me goosebumps.
[0:46:47 – 0:46:48] Erik: Yeah, I can feel it.
[0:46:50 – 0:46:51] Erik: Kobe in my pants.
[0:46:51 – 0:46:53] Erik: Last comment from Reddit ever.
[0:46:53 – 0:46:53] Adam: Ever.
[0:46:54 – 0:46:55] Adam: At least for this year.
[0:46:55 – 0:46:57] Erik: I too had a baby this year.
[0:46:57 – 0:46:58] Erik: All right.
[0:46:58 – 0:46:58] Erik: Way to go.
[0:46:58 – 0:47:00] Erik: Didn’t even touch the water.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:00] Erik: All right.
[0:47:01 – 0:47:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:01 – 0:47:02] Adam: Well, that’s what happens.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:03] Erik: Yep.
[0:47:04 – 0:47:05] Adam: Hard to paddle with a baby.
[0:47:05 – 0:47:08] Adam: They don’t know how to handle a canoe or a paddle.
[0:47:09 – 0:47:11] Erik: Barely even know how to swim.
[0:47:11 – 0:47:13] Adam: They don’t even know how to make rub-a-boo.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:14] Adam: Rub-a-boo.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:16] Adam: Those babies, they’re so silly.
[0:47:17 – 0:47:27] Adam: Congratulations to all our listeners who had babies this year, future paddlers, and we’re all very happy for you, and I hope you get some sleep.
[0:47:30 – 0:47:31] Erik: That was a joke, Eric.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:33] Adam: That was a joke?
[0:47:33 – 0:47:34] Adam: He’s staring at the laptop.
[0:47:35 – 0:47:37] Erik: Sorry.
[0:47:37 – 0:47:40] Adam: Congratulations, and thank you for all the Reddit comments.
[0:47:42 – 0:47:43] Adam: Those were pretty damn good.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:50] Adam: The haiku game in this Tumble Home subreddit community is on point right now.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:56] Adam: I don’t know if there’s another subreddit out there kicking out these kinds of high-level haikus about nature on a regular basis.
[0:47:57 – 0:48:07] Adam: I don’t think many people realize, Eric, that a haiku must have an element of nature and preferably a personal experience involved to truly be a haiku.
[0:48:07 – 0:48:12] Adam: A lot of people just think it’s the 5-7-5, but there’s a lot more to a haiku.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:13] Adam: So much more.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:17] Adam: It’s perfectly captured by these haikus here on the Tumble Home subreddit.
[0:48:18 – 0:48:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:20] Erik: Well done.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:20] Adam: At least.
[0:48:21 – 0:48:22] Adam: Yeah, so very well done.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:24] Erik: Thanks, y’all.
[0:48:24 – 0:48:25] Erik: Thanks, everybody.
[0:48:26 – 0:48:26] Erik: Email?
[0:48:27 – 0:48:28] Erik: Emails?
[0:48:28 – 0:48:29] Erik: Emails.
[0:48:29 – 0:48:33] Erik: This is the big one, but I just noticed that there is one from earlier in November.
[0:48:33 – 0:48:34] Erik: The Paddle and Portage…
[0:48:35 – 0:48:35] Erik: Oh.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:37] Erik: In Madison, we were talking about that.
[0:48:37 – 0:48:42] Adam: Didn’t we used to have a typewriter sound effect before we’d read a long email?
[0:48:42 – 0:48:43] Adam: Correspondence.
[0:48:43 – 0:48:43] Adam: Correspondence.
[0:48:44 – 0:48:44] Adam: There it is.
[0:48:44 – 0:48:45] Adam: Where’s that drop in?
[0:48:45 – 0:48:46] Adam: I think I got lost in time.
[0:48:53 – 0:48:54] Erik: Trevor made off with it.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:57] Adam: Trevor’s back, and he brought the correspondence with him.
[0:48:57 – 0:48:58] Erik: Yeah, he dug it up.
[0:48:58 – 0:49:00] Adam: Got the bag old mail going.
[0:49:00 – 0:49:02] Adam: Bag old mail.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:07] Adam: He took the dog team down to Beaver Bay and picked up some correspondence.
[0:49:07 – 0:49:08] Adam: Way to go, Trevor.
[0:49:09 – 0:49:10] Adam: He’s nodding.
[0:49:10 – 0:49:13] Adam: He’s giving the Robert Redford nod of approval over there.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:16] Adam: He’s just sitting up in one of the canoes in the rafters.
[0:49:16 – 0:49:18] Erik: It does not seem like it’s a load-bearing rope.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:20] Adam: I don’t think you should be up there, Trevor.
[0:49:20 – 0:49:20] Adam: No.
[0:49:20 – 0:49:21] Adam: You can’t tell him what to do.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:22] Erik: It’s from John, though.
[0:49:23 – 0:49:27] Erik: Unfortunately, 2022 was the last year for the paddle and portage event.
[0:49:27 – 0:49:27] Erik: What?
[0:49:28 – 0:49:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:28 – 0:49:29] Erik: Officially canceled in 2023.
[0:49:32 – 0:49:32] Erik: Shame.
[0:49:32 – 0:49:33] Erik: You’re kidding me.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:34 – 0:49:37] Erik: This is coming from John via… From Madison?
[0:49:37 – 0:49:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:39] Erik: John from Madison.
[0:49:39 – 0:49:40] Erik: John from Madison.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:42] Erik: You got to be kidding me.
[0:49:42 – 0:49:45] Adam: And yeah, this is also direct verbatim.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:48] Erik: And yeah, it had been a few years since it was on the square and that was the best part.
[0:49:48 – 0:49:55] Erik: Presumably the condo owners played into it, but I assume the permitting process is more onerous up there as well.
[0:49:55 – 0:49:55] Erik: So…
[0:49:57 – 0:50:20] Erik: oh my god yeah the baby boomers ruined the paddle portage is what you’re telling me that’s uh the condo owners on the square yeah i guess i don’t know i can’t i have no frame of reference for what it looks like but i can picture it you know i can see the gentrification yeah i could smell it from here i can’t right now well that’s sick
[0:50:21 – 0:50:28] Erik: It is disappointing, but I mean, it hasn’t been as canceled for as long as maybe you had sounded like you were thinking it hadn’t been happening.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:29] Erik: Maybe it’ll be back.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:30] Erik: Let’s have hope.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:31] Erik: There’s definitely hope.
[0:50:32 – 0:50:32] Erik: It’ll be back.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:34] Erik: It’s going to be back.
[0:50:34 – 0:50:35] Adam: It’s going to be back, Eric.
[0:50:36 – 0:50:36] Adam: All right.
[0:50:37 – 0:50:39] Erik: Do we want to get to the long email?
[0:50:39 – 0:50:39] Erik: This is from Joel.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:46] Adam: Yeah, let’s go check the Northern Lights first, and then we’ll get into the long email.
[0:50:46 – 0:50:46] Adam: All right.
[0:50:46 – 0:50:48] Erik: Well, you yell if you see them.
[0:50:48 – 0:50:48] Adam: I will.
[0:50:48 – 0:50:49] Adam: I’ll whistle and yell.
[0:50:50 – 0:50:51] Erik: Whistle and yell simultaneously?
[0:50:52 – 0:50:52] Erik: A yell whistle.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:53] Adam: I can do it.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:54] Erik: All right.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:58] Erik: Well, I really hope the Northern Lights are out now so I can hear a yell whistle.
[0:51:00 – 0:51:01] Adam: The friendships we make along the way.
[0:51:01 – 0:51:03] Erik: That’s what it’s all about, the home run.
[0:51:03 – 0:51:04] Erik: It’s not about catching that home run ball.
[0:51:04 – 0:51:05] Erik: It’s about the hot dogs, remember?
[0:51:06 – 0:51:06] Adam: That’s right, yeah.
[0:51:06 – 0:51:08] Erik: Yeah, it’s all about those dollar dogs.
[0:51:08 – 0:51:09] Adam: It’s about the relish.
[0:51:09 – 0:51:13] Erik: It’s about that neon green Chicago relish.
[0:51:14 – 0:51:17] AdamPewPew: Split this up into two, I think.
[0:51:18 – 0:51:25] Erik: You gotta, you know, you gotta share a little bit of this massive response from Joel.
[0:51:25 – 0:51:26] Erik: Thank you, Joel.
[0:51:26 – 0:51:30] Erik: One of the only emails on the question of the year.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:32] Erik: Hopefully this reaches you.
[0:51:32 – 0:51:33] Erik: It has.
[0:51:33 – 0:51:34] Erik: We got it.
[0:51:34 – 0:51:34] Erik: Currently.
[0:51:35 – 0:51:37] Erik: It has too many characters for the subreddit.
[0:51:37 – 0:51:38] Erik: Is there a limit?
[0:51:39 – 0:51:41] Adam: Apparently the limit’s 10,000.
[0:51:41 – 0:51:42] Adam: Is it?
[0:51:42 – 0:51:42] Adam: Characters.
[0:51:43 – 0:51:43] Erik: Dang.
[0:51:44 – 0:51:47] Erik: Yeah, well, that’s fine.
[0:51:47 – 0:51:49] Erik: I’m glad you still took the time.
[0:51:49 – 0:51:51] Adam: We’re all about the long form here on Tumble Home.
[0:51:51 – 0:51:52] Adam: Yes.
[0:51:53 – 0:51:56] Erik: Well, I’ll try and decide what it looks like halfway.
[0:51:56 – 0:51:58] Adam: We’ll try and stop and you can finish it up.
[0:51:58 – 0:51:59] Adam: It’s like the olden days.
[0:51:59 – 0:52:00] Adam: This is how we used to do it.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:01] Erik: Is it?
[0:52:01 – 0:52:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:02 – 0:52:02] Adam: Eyeballing it.
[0:52:03 – 0:52:03] Erik: What was it?
[0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Adam: It’s like the portage technique.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:06] Adam: You got to eyeball the halfway.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:08] Adam: That’s what I’m saying.
[0:52:08 – 0:52:11] Erik: Oh, I was thinking of the thing back in the day where you do popcorn.
[0:52:12 – 0:52:12] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:52:13 – 0:52:14] Adam: I had that, right?
[0:52:14 – 0:52:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:14 – 0:52:15] Adam: Nobody likes that.
[0:52:15 – 0:52:15] Erik: No.
[0:52:16 – 0:52:17] Erik: And then I’ll popcorn you.
[0:52:18 – 0:52:18] Adam: All right.
[0:52:18 – 0:52:19] Adam: That’s fine, though.
[0:52:19 – 0:52:19] Erik: All right.
[0:52:19 – 0:52:22] Erik: This time a year ago.
[0:52:22 – 0:52:23] Erik: We’re going back.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:28] Erik: Cue Wayne’s World time travel sound effect.
[0:52:29 – 0:52:30] Erik: Thank you, Trevin.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:31] Erik: Got it.
[0:52:31 – 0:52:43] Erik: I had the privilege of hearing you read my regaling from my first solo trip where I successfully quit smoking cigarettes on Pizza Biter Lake, commonly referred to as Rib.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:43] Erik: Rib.
[0:52:44 – 0:52:45] Erik: I do remember that comment.
[0:52:47 – 0:52:48] Adam: All-time great comments on the show.
[0:52:49 – 0:52:50] Erik: It’s already been a year since that.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:51] Erik: I feel like we just did this.
[0:52:52 – 0:52:53] Erik: That’s how it happens.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:54] Erik: What’s going on?
[0:52:55 – 0:52:55] Erik: Rib.
[0:52:56 – 0:53:05] Erik: What an experience to kick the habit in the woods and I am still going strong 16 months later while benefiting me and my family in ways that I never expected.
[0:53:06 – 0:53:08] Erik: Ways you dare not dream of.
[0:53:09 – 0:53:14] Erik: Part of my motivation was to also show my ailing father that I could quit smoking before he passed away.
[0:53:14 – 0:53:25] Erik: When he did die a few months later, I was going through his old tackle box and found the Canadian fishing license from my first trip on the border route with him when I was just seven years old.
[0:53:26 – 0:53:27] Erik: Wow.
[0:53:28 – 0:53:31] Erik: My wife ended up framing the permit for me to cherish, and I do.
[0:53:32 – 0:53:39] Erik: Ironically, my first night ever in the park on that trip was also the same date that I quit smoking, just separated by 33 years.
[0:53:40 – 0:53:41] Adam: Kind of like the Ronald Chera calendar.
[0:53:42 – 0:53:43] Erik: Yeah, eerie.
[0:53:43 – 0:53:44] Erik: Really eerie.
[0:53:46 – 0:53:47] Erik: Well, congrats on the smoking, the…
[0:53:49 – 0:54:06] Erik: amazing find of the og fishing license for a seven-year-old i thought they just needed to be with uh maybe things were back in 30 different 30 years they were a little bit different for the fishing license you’re probably just listed as like a part of the luggage ceremonial fishing license yeah yeah
[0:54:08 – 0:54:14] Adam: Yeah, I would assume they have to list everybody going, but probably you didn’t have to be paid for it.
[0:54:14 – 0:54:14] Adam: I’m sure it was.
[0:54:14 – 0:54:15] Adam: It didn’t cost anything.
[0:54:16 – 0:54:17] Adam: I’m not calling you luggage.
[0:54:19 – 0:54:21] Adam: You’re so much more than that.
[0:54:21 – 0:54:22] Erik: Yeah, the opposite, in fact.
[0:54:23 – 0:54:25] Erik: On this year’s paddling season…
[0:54:25 – 0:54:35] Erik: Somehow, I convinced my wife and two kids along with three others, three other of our best friends’ families to join me at the end of the Gunflint Trail for a lodge stay.
[0:54:35 – 0:54:36] Erik: Well, that’s how you convince them.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:38] Erik: The lodge.
[0:54:38 – 0:54:39] Adam: It’s going to be real nice.
[0:54:41 – 0:54:41] Erik: See that?
[0:54:42 – 0:54:42] Erik: Cozy bed.
[0:54:42 – 0:54:43] Erik: That’s a wall.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:46] Erik: And that up there, that’s a roof.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:46] Adam: Yeah, yeah.
[0:54:47 – 0:54:47] Erik: Yeah.
[0:54:48 – 0:54:49] Erik: Didn’t take much convincing though, did it?
[0:54:50 – 0:54:55] Erik: We rented the entire Sag Lodge just next to EP55’s boat launch.
[0:54:55 – 0:54:56] Erik: I know the one.
[0:54:57 – 0:54:57] Erik: Ah.
[0:54:58 – 0:54:59] Erik: You know the one too.
[0:54:59 – 0:55:00] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:00 – 0:55:02] Erik: I can see.
[0:55:02 – 0:55:05] Erik: For a full week with a total of 17.
[0:55:05 – 0:55:05] Erik: Wow.
[0:55:05 – 0:55:06] Adam: Holy smokes.
[0:55:07 – 0:55:10] Erik: I think I could probably see myself doing that way more than I could doing.
[0:55:10 – 0:55:12] Erik: I’d rather do 17 in a big cabin.
[0:55:12 – 0:55:13] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:13 – 0:55:23] Erik: with like access to boats and canoes and a car than like nine on a canoe trip where I’m like, well, we’re kind of locked in here, people.
[0:55:23 – 0:55:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:23 – 0:55:24] Adam: You can’t like dip out.
[0:55:24 – 0:55:26] Adam: I’d rather do the home alone.
[0:55:26 – 0:55:27] Erik: Oh, sure.
[0:55:27 – 0:55:29] Erik: I do that every day already, though.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:30] Erik: I don’t need that.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:38] Erik: I mean, if I’m going to be doing like a trip of some sort, it’s usually going to involve maybe another group of friends or at least another couple.
[0:55:38 – 0:55:41] Adam: No, I mean by like home alone, like you’re taking your whole family to Paris.
[0:55:41 – 0:55:43] Erik: Oh, the people that weren’t at the home.
[0:55:43 – 0:55:44] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:51] Adam: Everybody else that got to go on the trip, that’s the kind of trip we’re talking about here, I think.
[0:55:51 – 0:55:55] Adam: It’s car camping and luxury life in a big group.
[0:55:55 – 0:55:56] Erik: We got the cheapskate uncle.
[0:55:57 – 0:56:01] Adam: Because that’s the only way I’m getting a trip with that amount of people is if it’s with family.
[0:56:02 – 0:56:02] Erik: Right.
[0:56:02 – 0:56:03] Adam: I don’t have that many friends.
[0:56:03 – 0:56:05] Erik: But there’s options for…
[0:56:05 – 0:56:07] Erik: There’s exit strategies in the 17 on the cabin.
[0:56:07 – 0:56:09] Adam: Yeah, you can go off on your own.
[0:56:09 – 0:56:11] Erik: You could drive to Grand Marais from there.
[0:56:11 – 0:56:12] Erik: You’d be gone for half the day.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:13] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:56:13 – 0:56:13] Adam: We got to go down.
[0:56:13 – 0:56:15] Adam: We need… We need leeches.
[0:56:15 – 0:56:16] Adam: And lard.
[0:56:17 – 0:56:18] Adam: Lard leeches.
[0:56:18 – 0:56:19] Adam: We need lard leeches.
[0:56:19 – 0:56:21] Adam: Probably like a nerd’s rope or two.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:24] Erik: These are hard, critical things we need for the weekend.
[0:56:25 – 0:56:26] Adam: Yeah, ice cream cake probably.
[0:56:26 – 0:56:27] Adam: We got to go.
[0:56:28 – 0:56:28] Adam: We’ll be back.
[0:56:28 – 0:56:29] Adam: The DQ rope.
[0:56:29 – 0:56:30] Adam: We’ll be back at dark.
[0:56:30 – 0:56:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:31 – 0:56:33] Erik: But it’s 8 a.m. Yeah, you know, it gets dark early up here.
[0:56:33 – 0:56:34] Erik: It’s an hour and a half away.
[0:56:35 – 0:56:36] Erik: Traffic, you know.
[0:56:38 – 0:56:38] Erik: All right.
[0:56:38 – 0:56:40] Erik: Originally planning to have a total of 22.
[0:56:40 – 0:56:40] Erik: Jeez.
[0:56:40 – 0:56:41] Erik: Wow.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:43] Erik: All right.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:43] Erik: That’s crazy.
[0:56:44 – 0:56:44] Erik: I mean.
[0:56:44 – 0:56:45] Adam: Now you’re bragging.
[0:56:45 – 0:56:45] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:45 – 0:56:48] Erik: Now you’re going to need two ice cream cakes.
[0:56:48 – 0:56:48] Adam: Yep.
[0:56:49 – 0:56:53] Erik: But unfortunately, one of my paddling partners and his family could not make the trip up north.
[0:56:54 – 0:57:10] Erik: This group of friends are more like family than friends and we all go back to high school and some much earlier and now get to watch our kids become best friends with each other with their relationships being further forged during our group family vacations that rarely get pulled off like this year’s trip.
[0:57:11 – 0:57:13] Erik: Yeah, I mean that’s crazy to get that many people together ever.
[0:57:14 – 0:57:15] Erik: On one place too.
[0:57:15 – 0:57:16] Erik: Throw in some youngsters.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:18] Adam: Yeah, that’s a way to get close for sure.
[0:57:18 – 0:57:19] AdamPewPew: Schedules, yeah.
[0:57:19 – 0:57:29] Erik: It was very rewarding having introduced everyone to my favorite place on earth and watching them all enjoy themselves, and for most, seeing them fall in love for similar reasons that I had decades ago as a youth.
[0:57:30 – 0:57:37] Erik: Brought my old town, a couple paddle boards, some inflatables, rented a motorboat, turned that portion of the Seagull River into our own playground.
[0:57:38 – 0:57:39] Erik: Respectfully.
[0:57:39 – 0:57:39] Erik: Respectfully.
[0:57:39 – 0:57:41] Erik: Depending on who’s judging, I suppose.
[0:57:41 – 0:57:42] Erik: I mean, you’re in the corridor there.
[0:57:42 – 0:57:43] Erik: You can see cabins.
[0:57:43 – 0:57:44] Erik: You’re in the corridor.
[0:57:44 – 0:57:45] Erik: Do whatever you want.
[0:57:46 – 0:57:46] Adam: Exactly.
[0:57:46 – 0:57:47] Erik: Jet skis.
[0:57:48 – 0:57:59] Erik: I did secure a missing link permit for the middle of the week and was able to spend one night in the park with my two kids, six and nine, and one of my closest friends and his 10-year-old daughter.
[0:57:59 – 0:58:00] Erik: See, that’s the other nice thing.
[0:58:00 – 0:58:01] Adam: Just going for an overnighter.
[0:58:01 – 0:58:02] Adam: Yeah, one night.
[0:58:02 – 0:58:03] Erik: You got the cabin.
[0:58:03 – 0:58:05] Erik: You don’t got to load into a truck afterwards.
[0:58:06 – 0:58:07] Erik: That’s ideal.
[0:58:07 – 0:58:09] Erik: Drive 10 hours back to wherever.
[0:58:09 – 0:58:10] Erik: This is genius.
[0:58:11 – 0:58:11] Erik: Got it all figured out.
[0:58:13 – 0:58:13] Erik: Put it on round.
[0:58:14 – 0:58:14] Erik: Help from Andy.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:16] Erik: Shout out to Andy at Tuscarora.
[0:58:16 – 0:58:17] Erik: Andy.
[0:58:18 – 0:58:19] Erik: Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:58:19 – 0:58:25] Erik: Two Northwind 17s and traveled the couple hour long trek to the island site on Snipe.
[0:58:25 – 0:58:25] Erik: Snipe.
[0:58:26 – 0:58:26] Erik: We love it.
[0:58:27 – 0:58:27] Adam: Big fan.
[0:58:27 – 0:58:29] Erik: Back to back island sites we have also stayed at.
[0:58:30 – 0:58:32] Adam: Yeah, Snipe is a friend of the snow.
[0:58:32 – 0:58:33] Adam: A friend of the snow.
[0:58:33 – 0:58:34] Erik: A friend of the snow.
[0:58:35 – 0:58:39] Erik: This was the third time that I had been to Snipe, the first time spending the night.
[0:58:40 – 0:58:43] Erik: We’re at a magical lake, and I was very proud.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:48] Erik: I was a very proud dad watching the kids handle that morning’s journey to get there.
[0:58:48 – 0:58:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:58:49 – 0:58:56] Erik: As soon as we landed on Snipe 1, the grasshoppers treated us promptly with a mass exodus that looked like a choreographed dance routine.
[0:58:57 – 0:59:20] Erik: the grasshoppers the last couple of years have been kind of crazy up here yeah we must be in like grasshopper maximum right now yeah i wonder what how that relates to the uh the borer schedule or the cicada or the solar cycle or the hairs there we go all of it they’re all connected eric it’s all connected
[0:59:22 – 0:59:27] Erik: My friend and I spent some time unloading and setting up camp while the three kids explored the island.
[0:59:27 – 0:59:32] Erik: When they returned, they all described how fun they had had getting lost and then finding their way back.
[0:59:32 – 0:59:37] Erik: We weren’t concerned as we were clearly, we would clearly hear them the whole time and they could do
[0:59:39 – 0:59:41] Erik: And likely so could the folks at Snipe 2.
[0:59:41 – 0:59:41] Erik: All right.
[0:59:42 – 0:59:50] Erik: Just as we finished setting up camp, we got a late afternoon storm that rolled in from the west, forced us into our tents, and under a rain fly for about an hour.
[0:59:50 – 0:59:56] Erik: It was at this point that I realized my friend’s 10-year-old daughter had T-Mobile service.
[0:59:56 – 1:00:00] Erik: How does the most janky of phone providers have service in my sanctuary?
[1:00:01 – 1:00:03] Erik: No offense, T-Mobile customers.”
[1:00:05 – 1:00:32] Erik: g mark i have t-mobile and it does fine yeah uses all the towers that’s the point yeah janky i’m done reading this comment he attacked my oh yeah you’re making fun of t-mobile big massive corporation that i just happen to have my phone through no that’s fine i think that’s funny like 10 years ago i’ve been like goddamn cell phone service in the park you know i’m like yeah t-mobile in the park hilarious yeah
[1:00:34 – 1:00:34] Adam: It happens.
[1:00:34 – 1:00:39] Adam: I got home the other day and somehow I connected to the Canadian towers at my house.
[1:00:39 – 1:00:40] Adam: I’m not that close to Thunder Bay.
[1:00:41 – 1:00:42] Adam: Welcome to Canada.
[1:00:42 – 1:00:43] Erik: I was like, what time is it?
[1:00:43 – 1:00:44] Erik: Oh, Jesus.
[1:00:44 – 1:00:44] Adam: Yeah.
[1:00:44 – 1:00:48] Adam: Like, oh, I somehow snagged a Canadian service tower.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:48] Adam: Yeah.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:53] Adam: You never know how these waves are going to fly through the atmosphere.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:54] Adam: Tell you what.
[1:00:55 – 1:00:55] Adam: Tell you what.
[1:00:55 – 1:00:56] Adam: I’ll tell you what.
[1:00:56 – 1:00:57] Adam: You just can’t trust them.
[1:00:58 – 1:01:04] Erik: She was able to talk to her mom back at the lodge and let the group know we were just fine hanging out in our tents during the storm.
[1:01:05 – 1:01:07] Erik: That’s not how this is supposed to work.
[1:01:07 – 1:01:14] Erik: They were all to be left to wonder how we were faring until we could update them in person upon our return.
[1:01:15 – 1:01:24] Erik: Anyways cutting that rant short the storm did stop for just enough time for us to get the cast iron out and cook our dinner of burgers and hot dogs.
[1:01:24 – 1:01:30] Erik: Like clockwork as soon as we finished cleaning up after dinner the next storm rolled in and this one continued throughout most of the night.
[1:01:34 – 1:01:37] Erik: I’ll read one more paragraph here, and then it’s you.
[1:01:39 – 1:01:47] Erik: The next morning was absolutely lovely, and we enjoyed our coffee and egg breakfast before packing up and making our journey out of the park via Cross Bay Rivers parking lot.
[1:01:48 – 1:02:03] Erik: Besides watching my two young kids power through the handful of portages on the second day, I watched my best friend and his daughter bond together and fall in love with the BWCA over a rather short period of time, and we’re talking about what they would like to do on their next trip.
[1:02:04 – 1:02:21] Erik: The most sketchy moment occurred near the end of our trip on Ham Lake when I short-arm tossed a beef jerky up to my son in the middle spot of our canoe and leaned too far right when trying to keep it from falling off the pack behind him and into the water.
[1:02:22 – 1:02:27] Erik: I’m sure this was great entertainment for the folks that were watching as we passed their campsite seconds earlier.
[1:02:28 – 1:02:33] Erik: All in all, it was a great trip with the kids for the first time and can’t wait to get them back next year.
[1:02:34 – 1:02:37] Erik: And hopefully, yearly trips a tradition.
[1:02:39 – 1:02:42] Erik: So the jerky didn’t cause a swamping, though, it didn’t sound like?
[1:02:42 – 1:02:45] Erik: It sounded like it was close to a jerky swamping.
[1:02:45 – 1:02:47] Erik: Jerky swamping with spectators.
[1:02:48 – 1:02:49] Erik: Ham Lake spectators.
[1:02:49 – 1:02:50] Erik: Not even technically in the park.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:51] Erik: Could have been anybody.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:52] Adam: That’s all right.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:53] Adam: Ham Lake’s in the park.
[1:02:53 – 1:02:54] Erik: Yeah, basically.
[1:02:54 – 1:02:56] Adam: If you ask me, Ham Lake counts.
[1:02:57 – 1:02:58] Erik: Old Posniak.
[1:02:58 – 1:03:06] Adam: Don’t do it, but it’s all, you know, the tradition of getting a trip together every year like this sounds really good.
[1:03:06 – 1:03:06] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:06 – 1:03:07] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:09 – 1:03:10] Adam: You’re saying this is halfway?
[1:03:10 – 1:03:13] Erik: Yeah, I think I maybe even went a little over halfway.
[1:03:14 – 1:03:16] Adam: All right, part two.
[1:03:18 – 1:03:21] Adam: We’re going to add like a Coghlan’s ad in between there probably?
[1:03:21 – 1:03:22] Adam: Yeah, maybe.
[1:03:22 – 1:03:24] Adam: For a snake bite kit.
[1:03:25 – 1:03:25] Adam: Just snakes.
[1:03:26 – 1:03:28] Erik: Coghlan’s snake pack.
[1:03:29 – 1:03:31] Erik: Snake luring kit.
[1:03:31 – 1:03:32] UNKNOWN: Snake.
[1:03:35 – 1:03:41] Adam: Next time you’re out camping and you want some friends, send out the Coghlan Snake Luring Kit.
[1:03:41 – 1:03:46] Adam: They call in all the snakes from the neighboring wood or desert.
[1:03:47 – 1:03:49] Adam: Only $3.99.
[1:03:49 – 1:03:52] Erik: Just a capsule of stinky snake pus.
[1:03:52 – 1:03:53] Erik: That’s what they want.
[1:03:53 – 1:03:54] Erik: Hang on a log.
[1:03:55 – 1:03:57] Adam: That and like gentle jazz.
[1:03:58 – 1:04:06] Erik: Yeah, and ground, big pounding bass, Barry White speakers flipped over onto the ground.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:10] Adam: It’s got like one LED light that just slowly pulses different colors.
[1:04:12 – 1:04:14] Erik: Here comes the snakes.
[1:04:14 – 1:04:16] Erik: Sounds like a screaming deal for $4.
[1:04:17 – 1:04:18] Erik: Thanks, Coglins.
[1:04:18 – 1:04:22] Erik: Yeah, you get a stinky pill and a wireless Bluetooth speaker.
[1:04:22 – 1:04:25] Adam: Pretty much guaranteed going to get snakes every night.
[1:04:25 – 1:04:25] Adam: Pretty much.
[1:04:25 – 1:04:26] Adam: And who doesn’t want that?
[1:04:28 – 1:04:32] Adam: All right, next up on the show, it’s the second half of the email.
[1:04:32 – 1:04:33] Adam: It’s still Joel.
[1:04:33 – 1:04:34] Adam: All right.
[1:04:35 – 1:04:38] Adam: Welcome back to Tumble Home Border Waters Podcast.
[1:04:38 – 1:04:44] Adam: This is the season finale, episode 244, and we’re digging into the second half of this epic email.
[1:04:46 – 1:04:47] Adam: Thank you for writing.
[1:04:47 – 1:04:58] Adam: As far as the rest of the lodge stay, the group enjoyed taking over the back patio of the Poplar House, where I now have an obsession for their house burger.
[1:04:58 – 1:05:01] Erik: It’s a real obsession.
[1:05:02 – 1:05:02] Erik: Pickles.
[1:05:03 – 1:05:05] Erik: It’s the only thing that keeps me coming back to meat.
[1:05:06 – 1:05:06] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:07 – 1:05:12] Adam: We had a great hike, which took us to maybe the middle cliffs behind Gunflint.
[1:05:12 – 1:05:20] Adam: We tried to get to the high cliffs, but decided to double back based on our group having younger kids.
[1:05:21 – 1:05:27] Adam: We did make it to a beautiful overlook, though, that was right off the border route trail and peered towards Canada.
[1:05:28 – 1:05:33] Adam: Spent an afternoon at Chick Walk and a morning on an island on Sag where I…
[1:05:33 – 1:05:37] Adam: Got hopelessly lost while shuttling the group from lodge to island site.
[1:05:37 – 1:05:37] Erik: Oh, no.
[1:05:38 – 1:05:47] Adam: On our way out of town, I made my wife drop off the few remaining beers and the Girl Scout cookies that I stashed away from my daughter’s troops’ sails.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:48] Adam: There we go.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:49] Adam: So that explains that.
[1:05:49 – 1:05:50] Adam: Nice.
[1:05:51 – 1:05:51] Adam: Tied that one up.
[1:05:52 – 1:05:55] Erik: Everything’s getting tied up in a neat little package.
[1:05:56 – 1:06:03] Adam: Three weeks later, I returned for my five-night border route trip with my friend, who I haven’t spent this much time with for 25 years.
[1:06:04 – 1:06:17] Adam: We met during my first attempt at college in Vermont, and without divulging too much of his life without permission, I’ll just say that I have a lot of respect for him and have even named my son the same name as his.
[1:06:18 – 1:06:24] Adam: After six solid days, it was great to share the wilderness with him on my new-to-me entry point and route.
[1:06:25 – 1:06:30] Adam: We paddled the entire length of Gunflint and ended up staying at our favorite site of the trip on night one.
[1:06:31 – 1:06:41] Adam: The island site that faces the beach at Bridal Falls on Gunflint is spectacular and certainly helped my impression by having mass amounts of axe-split cedar.
[1:06:41 – 1:06:45] Adam: Oh, that’s axe-split cedar.
[1:06:45 – 1:06:46] Erik: It’s one of those boat-in sites.
[1:06:47 – 1:07:05] Adam: it is yeah i mean that’s a motorboat site yeah maybe i have to go to the eye doctor you know you ever think of that yeah maybe you never had to wear glasses as far as i know redwood but some more redwood whiskey though maybe that’s the problem
[1:07:06 – 1:07:07] Adam: I only had the one little glass.
[1:07:07 – 1:07:08] Adam: No, I was saying that you need more.
[1:07:08 – 1:07:09] Adam: And I switched back to light beer.
[1:07:09 – 1:07:11] Adam: You need more light beer.
[1:07:11 – 1:07:13] Adam: Oh, yeah, I should go switch back to more whiskey.
[1:07:13 – 1:07:14] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:14 – 1:07:15] Adam: I might as well.
[1:07:15 – 1:07:17] Erik: To hone in or just close an eye.
[1:07:17 – 1:07:21] Adam: Yeah, maybe just go one eye.
[1:07:22 – 1:07:26] Adam: Yeah, that’s why in Wisconsin they don’t name their highways after numbers.
[1:07:27 – 1:07:28] Adam: They just use lots of H’s and S’s.
[1:07:30 – 1:07:31] Erik: And then why they’re all double letters.
[1:07:32 – 1:07:36] Adam: So when you close the one eye and just go for a triple H highway.
[1:07:36 – 1:07:36] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:37 – 1:07:37] Adam: That’s where I live.
[1:07:38 – 1:07:39] Adam: All right.
[1:07:39 – 1:07:39] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:39 – 1:07:39] Adam: Fine.
[1:07:39 – 1:07:40] Adam: Pass it up.
[1:07:40 – 1:07:45] Adam: I’ll have one more little sip, but after I finished the comment, there’s two more paragraphs.
[1:07:45 – 1:07:46] Adam: Holy moly.
[1:07:51 – 1:07:52] Adam: All right.
[1:07:52 – 1:07:52] Adam: I can do this.
[1:07:54 – 1:07:54] Adam: It’s really small.
[1:07:55 – 1:07:56] Adam: It is really small font though.
[1:07:56 – 1:07:57] Erik: You can zoom in on it if you want.
[1:07:58 – 1:07:59] Adam: Yeah, but not up there.
[1:07:59 – 1:08:00] Adam: Down in the track pad?
[1:08:01 – 1:08:02] Adam: See, it ain’t working, man.
[1:08:02 – 1:08:02] Adam: Oh.
[1:08:03 – 1:08:04] Adam: Oh, no.
[1:08:04 – 1:08:04] Adam: There we go.
[1:08:04 – 1:08:05] Adam: All right.
[1:08:05 – 1:08:05] Adam: This is much better.
[1:08:05 – 1:08:07] Adam: Ooh, yeah.
[1:08:07 – 1:08:07] Adam: There we go.
[1:08:07 – 1:08:09] Erik: You got it on Jitterbug setting now?
[1:08:09 – 1:08:12] Adam: Yeah.
[1:08:13 – 1:08:16] Adam: Yeah, the podcast is now sponsored by Jitterbug.
[1:08:17 – 1:08:25] Adam: Our journey from Gunflint Lodge to West Bearskin took us by way of the predictable route, which included one night on South and a couple nights on Rose.
[1:08:26 – 1:08:35] Adam: Our time on Rose included a lot of hiking nearby overlooks, including the Bearskin Trail Hiking, Rose Falls, and Stairway Portage Exploring.
[1:08:37 – 1:08:38] Erik: Eric.
[1:08:39 – 1:08:39] Erik: What?
[1:08:39 – 1:08:42] Erik: Do you need me to… All right, I got it.
[1:08:43 – 1:08:43] Adam: I got it.
[1:08:45 – 1:08:46] Adam: Okay, it’s perfect now.
[1:08:48 – 1:08:48] Adam: All right.
[1:08:49 – 1:08:49] Adam: I swear.
[1:08:49 – 1:08:50] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:51 – 1:09:05] Adam: This portion of our trip was mostly covered during the Brutus and Gerald episode, as that was our tale encountering the bobby log with the ominous bear and camp messages written in ash along with the visitor log of the bear and mouse tales.
[1:09:06 – 1:09:08] Adam: What a beautiful area of the park.
[1:09:09 – 1:09:19] Adam: Definitely would like to pick of the border route where I left off and head east from there and experience the rest of the vento.
[1:09:20 – 1:09:25] Adam: Would be excited to re-listen to the first seasons again as research for that trip.
[1:09:26 – 1:09:29] Adam: Maybe I just decide my next season’s trip as I write this?
[1:09:32 – 1:09:46] Adam: Some of the new areas of opportunities that I was bringing with me to this trip were centered around eating better while in the park, but also gleaning from the show and its community on simply being an all-around better canoe camper.
[1:09:49 – 1:09:52] Adam: We brought a backpack cooler that I had researched once.
[1:09:52 – 1:09:56] Adam: Dirty Dad Bod turned me on to the idea from a Discord conversation.
[1:09:57 – 1:10:04] Adam: Brought out ursac bear bags and liners after private messaging with Phasmata on CCS packs and food storage.
[1:10:05 – 1:10:11] Adam: Brought an MSR gravity filter and never had to sawyer squeeze at all during the entire trip.
[1:10:12 – 1:10:25] Adam: Also brought my well-seasoned home cast iron skillet and was cooking Nalgene stored eggs in my day four, into day four, and had pork chops when they finally thought on night three.
[1:10:25 – 1:10:26] Adam: There we go.
[1:10:28 – 1:10:34] Adam: I have learned so much from listening to the show and from the greater community of the fans and contributors.
[1:10:34 – 1:10:42] Adam: I’m so grateful that I’m able to share this special place with those that mean the most to me and to this community especially.
[1:10:42 – 1:10:48] Adam: I would like to say thank you for all your help in making me a better BWCA camper.
[1:10:49 – 1:10:49] AdamPewPew: Huzzah!
[1:10:50 – 1:10:50] Adam: Happy paddling.
[1:10:51 – 1:10:54] Adam: And has anyone suggested the beach for TCC?
[1:10:54 – 1:10:57] Adam: I can’t believe you tricked me into reading that, Joel.
[1:10:58 – 1:10:59] Adam: All right, fine.
[1:10:59 – 1:11:03] Adam: I guess we’re going to have to put the beach on the next up list.
[1:11:04 – 1:11:09] Adam: I wanted to watch I, Tonya, but I guess we’re going to watch the beach next, Eric.
[1:11:09 – 1:11:12] Erik: You were claiming it was a documentary, first of all.
[1:11:12 – 1:11:13] Erik: Which one?
[1:11:13 – 1:11:37] Adam: they’re both a documentary the beach and itania are both real stories that really happen to real people while traveling in indonesia and lily hammer france precisely thank you for the comment joel thank you for the massive comment i kind of i gotta give myself a pretty bad grade on the read on that one but it’s a real long um
[1:11:37 – 1:11:40] Adam: A lot of, as we know on Tumblr, a lot of excuses.
[1:11:41 – 1:11:43] Adam: These are very long paragraphs.
[1:11:43 – 1:11:50] Erik: Yeah, well, it’s also the email form, which fills up the whole page, versus the subreddit, which is just like a thin column.
[1:11:50 – 1:11:57] Adam: And I was all primed up to read haikus, and I tried my best, but I really don’t think I did a very good job reading that email.
[1:11:57 – 1:12:01] Adam: I probably didn’t do it justice, but it was a really nicely written email.
[1:12:01 – 1:12:03] Erik: Yeah, I couldn’t have said it better myself at the end.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:13] Erik: Grateful for the community, grateful for everybody being involved, again, in wrapping up another open water season while we’re all still here.
[1:12:15 – 1:12:16] Erik: What else is there to say?
[1:12:18 – 1:12:19] Erik: Besides your haiku?
[1:12:19 – 1:12:21] Adam: Yeah, I have a haiku to read yet.
[1:12:22 – 1:12:24] Erik: Okay, well, I haven’t pressed stop yet.
[1:12:27 – 1:12:27] AdamPewPew: Not yet.
[1:12:28 – 1:12:30] Adam: Actually, I have a couple of notes.
[1:12:30 – 1:12:32] Adam: How long are we at right now?
[1:12:32 – 1:12:33] Adam: Do you have any battery left?
[1:12:35 – 1:12:35] Erik: Yeah.
[1:12:36 – 1:12:37] Erik: Well, it’s not charging.
[1:12:37 – 1:12:38] Erik: We’re sitting at 67%.
[1:12:38 – 1:12:40] Adam: Oh, we got plenty.
[1:12:40 – 1:12:41] Adam: We got plenty.
[1:12:41 – 1:12:48] Adam: I mean, I did want to rank ice skating movies if you’re okay with doing that.
[1:12:49 – 1:12:50] Erik: I mean, sure.
[1:12:50 – 1:12:50] Erik: We can do that.
[1:12:50 – 1:12:52] Erik: I don’t really have…
[1:12:52 – 1:12:55] Erik: These are going to be me responding to your rankings because I didn’t… That’s fine.
[1:12:55 – 1:12:58] Adam: I probably have guaranteed the top…
[1:12:58 – 1:13:22] Adam: like top eight best ice skating movies okay maybe you can help me rank them because i didn’t really rank them i just recorded them sure and we were talking a lot about um cutting edge last week obviously one of the great i think might be the greatest so that we’re gonna start there cutting that’s your number one well that’s just the first one i had written down oh we’re gonna rank them as we go oh you don’t have them ranked in any order
[1:13:22 – 1:13:25] Adam: No, we’re going top nine ice skating movies.
[1:13:25 – 1:13:26] Adam: As far as you can remember?
[1:13:27 – 1:13:31] Adam: I just have eight ice skating movies, and then we’ll rank them as we go.
[1:13:31 – 1:13:31] Erik: All right.
[1:13:32 – 1:13:34] Erik: It’s not hockey specific, just ice skating.
[1:13:34 – 1:13:36] Adam: There’s only two kinds of ice skating movies.
[1:13:36 – 1:13:38] Adam: It’s hockey and figure skating.
[1:13:38 – 1:13:43] Adam: And then there’s The Cutting Edge, which is just a movie about figure skating, actually.
[1:13:43 – 1:13:44] Adam: Not really hockey.
[1:13:45 – 1:13:45] Adam: All right.
[1:13:45 – 1:13:48] Adam: So Cutting Edge is probably number one for me.
[1:13:48 – 1:13:49] Adam: What about Mighty Ducks, though?
[1:13:49 – 1:13:51] Adam: Is Mighty Ducks better than Cutting Edge?
[1:13:51 – 1:13:53] Erik: I haven’t seen Cutting Edge.
[1:13:53 – 1:13:55] Adam: All right, so Mighty Ducks is probably number one.
[1:13:56 – 1:13:58] Adam: What about Charlie Brown Christmas, though?
[1:14:00 – 1:14:04] Erik: I mean, it’s not an ice skating film, though.
[1:14:05 – 1:14:06] Erik: I wouldn’t say that’s the theme.
[1:14:08 – 1:14:10] Adam: I think it counts by the metrics.
[1:14:10 – 1:14:18] Erik: It can count, but I mean, in terms of its importance to the art, it’s not that important to it.
[1:14:18 – 1:14:21] Adam: I did like that you put the Charlie Brown on the last episode, though.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:21] Adam: Classic, yeah.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:23] Adam: Thank you.
[1:14:23 – 1:14:27] Adam: The other ones I had were Blades of Glory, Slapshot,
[1:14:29 – 1:14:29] Adam: Miracle.
[1:14:30 – 1:14:31] Adam: Have you seen Miracle?
[1:14:31 – 1:14:32] Erik: I have, yeah.
[1:14:33 – 1:14:33] Adam: Ice Princess.
[1:14:33 – 1:14:35] Adam: I don’t even know what that is.
[1:14:36 – 1:14:50] Adam: It’s a math student at Harvard decides to train figure skaters and then falls in love with figure skating herself and becomes a champion.
[1:14:50 – 1:14:51] Adam: You haven’t seen it?
[1:14:52 – 1:14:52] Erik: No.
[1:14:53 – 1:14:53] Erik: Becomes a champion.
[1:14:54 – 1:14:55] Adam: Which Mighty Ducks, too.
[1:14:55 – 1:14:56] Adam: There’s three of them.
[1:14:56 – 1:14:57] Adam: Only Mighty Ducks won.
[1:14:57 – 1:14:58] Adam: Okay.
[1:14:59 – 1:15:00] Adam: Gordy’s Revenge.
[1:15:01 – 1:15:01] Erik: Well, that would be three.
[1:15:01 – 1:15:04] Adam: Trevor’s shaking his head vigorously, I guess.
[1:15:04 – 1:15:04] Adam: That’s the one.
[1:15:05 – 1:15:06] Adam: I, Tonya.
[1:15:06 – 1:15:07] Adam: Have you seen I, Tonya?
[1:15:07 – 1:15:09] Adam: The Nancy Kerrigan.
[1:15:09 – 1:15:09] Adam: Yeah.
[1:15:10 – 1:15:11] Adam: You have seen it?
[1:15:11 – 1:15:11] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[1:15:11 – 1:15:12] Adam: Is it good?
[1:15:12 – 1:15:13] Erik: No, it’s fine.
[1:15:13 – 1:15:14] Adam: I saw it’s on HBO.
[1:15:14 – 1:15:16] Adam: I was like, I haven’t seen it yet.
[1:15:16 – 1:15:17] Adam: I put it on the list.
[1:15:17 – 1:15:19] Erik: I don’t think I’ll ever re-watch it, but it’s fine.
[1:15:19 – 1:15:21] Adam: And then Charlie Brown Christmas.
[1:15:21 – 1:15:21] Adam: Those are the eight.
[1:15:22 – 1:15:48] Adam: hmm the only other one i mean i’m sure there’s like a probably at least a couple more than that oh there’s like 50 more than that that’s just the top eight as far as i deduced i asked everybody in town today and that was the top eight answers you get anybody throwing goon in there nobody said goon i like that one i was surprised yeah all right i’ll add it top nine putting goon on there
[1:15:49 – 1:16:12] Erik: yeah in terms of like more recent have you seen mystery alaska because that one was mentioned and i haven’t seen it mystery alaska is pretty good all right i’ll put that on there we go we got pretty good it’s kind of like your adult bad news bears of hockey sort of okay all right i’m intrigued sort of with a like uh there’s definitely some uh rom-com aspects to it as well all right not bad
[1:16:14 – 1:16:17] Erik: I don’t know if I have any disagreements besides the cutting edge.
[1:16:18 – 1:16:20] Erik: I’m sure that should not be near the top.
[1:16:21 – 1:16:22] Adam: I like cutting edge, though.
[1:16:23 – 1:16:24] Adam: I mean, it’s no slap shot.
[1:16:25 – 1:16:26] Erik: I think that’s the standard.
[1:16:28 – 1:16:31] Adam: Yeah, I think Mighty Ducks is probably number one, though.
[1:16:31 – 1:16:32] Erik: Yeah, it’s fine.
[1:16:32 – 1:16:32] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:16:33 – 1:16:37] Erik: It’s one of those tough ones where it’s got, it’s like the campsite that you went to when you were in high school that you think is amazing.
[1:16:37 – 1:16:43] Erik: And then you go back to it and you’re like, well, not as good as I remembered it being.
[1:16:44 – 1:16:46] Erik: I don’t think that those movies were meant for adults.
[1:16:46 – 1:16:52] Erik: So to go back and try and watch them now and like actually like analyze it or even have a good time with it, probably not as much.
[1:16:52 – 1:16:53] Adam: Yeah, that’s true.
[1:16:54 – 1:17:15] Erik: i mean if you can watch it with friends and like other people yeah then they’re really funny because it’s the whole concept is pretty ridiculous i mean a drunk lawyer gets pulled over for dui and his punishment is to coach or volunteer for coaching community little like peewee hockey that seems like a reward down to punish not a punishment
[1:17:15 – 1:17:24] Erik: Yeah, and he takes a team who is essentially just basically skating on boots on an outdoor pond.
[1:17:25 – 1:17:26] Adam: Yeah, they don’t even have skates.
[1:17:26 – 1:17:32] Erik: And within a year is representing the United States in the Olympics in D2.
[1:17:33 – 1:17:34] Adam: Yeah, you have that right.
[1:17:35 – 1:17:36] Erik: They add a few.
[1:17:37 – 1:17:42] Erik: They add Cat, the goalie, the fast Texan who can’t stop.
[1:17:44 – 1:17:45] Erik: You don’t need to stop.
[1:17:45 – 1:17:46] Erik: Who’s the other one that they add?
[1:17:47 – 1:17:49] Erik: Don’t they add like another goon of some sort?
[1:17:50 – 1:17:51] Erik: Another big guy?
[1:17:52 – 1:17:54] Erik: For the most part, it’s that whole team.
[1:17:55 – 1:18:03] Erik: And say what you will about Will and Hart and Gordon Bombay and his demons.
[1:18:05 – 1:18:06] Erik: And second chances, yeah.
[1:18:06 – 1:18:10] Erik: Yeah, that doesn’t make up for an entire United States team.
[1:18:10 – 1:18:26] Erik: hockey players with actual skill like it some runty little team from to Tina or wherever they were from down in the cities would not be representing majority of US Olympic hockey team and the best team to beat would have not been Iceland
[1:18:28 – 1:18:30] Adam: That’s the worst part, yeah, that they played Iceland.
[1:18:31 – 1:18:33] Adam: Iceland, not really known for… No shade.
[1:18:33 – 1:18:35] Adam: I don’t know if anybody in Iceland listens to Tumble.
[1:18:36 – 1:18:38] Adam: I’d say zero, probably, if we looked at the stats.
[1:18:38 – 1:18:44] Erik: I mean, say what you will about Iceland as a hockey country, but they get represented as so evil.
[1:18:44 – 1:18:45] Erik: Iceland’s never been like…
[1:18:46 – 1:18:46] Erik: They’re so nice.
[1:18:46 – 1:18:51] Erik: Why don’t they go… That’s the heyday of the Russians are the baddies.
[1:18:52 – 1:18:53] Erik: I mean, I guess it’s a unique twist.
[1:18:54 – 1:18:55] Erik: They’re just black and…
[1:18:56 – 1:18:59] Erik: Just seem like they’re absolutely the scariest team ever.
[1:18:59 – 1:19:00] Erik: From Iceland.
[1:19:00 – 1:19:00] AdamPewPew: Yeah.
[1:19:00 – 1:19:01] AdamPewPew: It seemed like the Iceland people.
[1:19:02 – 1:19:02] AdamPewPew: It’s so cold.
[1:19:02 – 1:19:03] AdamPewPew: Icelandics are nice.
[1:19:03 – 1:19:04] Erik: It’s so cold.
[1:19:05 – 1:19:06] Erik: It makes me want to shiver.
[1:19:06 – 1:19:12] Erik: Listening to their Sear Ross and toasting marshmallows over open magma pools.
[1:19:12 – 1:19:12] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[1:19:13 – 1:19:13] Adam: There you go.
[1:19:13 – 1:19:14] Adam: The magma.
[1:19:14 – 1:19:15] Erik: What else could you want?
[1:19:18 – 1:19:19] Erik: All right.
[1:19:19 – 1:19:20] Erik: Well, I do have a haiku.
[1:19:20 – 1:19:22] Erik: Okay.
[1:19:22 – 1:19:24] Erik: Going out on a haiku.
[1:19:25 – 1:19:27] Erik: On a high note coup?
[1:19:29 – 1:19:30] Adam: Yeah.
[1:19:30 – 1:19:32] Adam: Or is that asking too much?
[1:19:32 – 1:19:35] Adam: No, before I do the haiku, my nail fell off on my dead toe.
[1:19:38 – 1:19:40] Erik: Oh, that’s not even a surprise anymore.
[1:19:40 – 1:19:43] Adam: So somebody last week mentioned dead toes again.
[1:19:43 – 1:19:44] Adam: That’s right.
[1:19:44 – 1:19:46] Adam: It’s a plague of Boundary Waters campers.
[1:19:46 – 1:19:47] Adam: It’s an elite club.
[1:19:48 – 1:19:49] Adam: So I got a fresh toe coming in.
[1:19:49 – 1:19:51] Adam: So it’s actually an exciting time.
[1:19:51 – 1:19:51] Erik: All right.
[1:19:51 – 1:19:53] Erik: Well, let me know in two years when it’s fully grown back.
[1:19:53 – 1:19:54] Adam: I will.
[1:19:54 – 1:19:54] Adam: I will.
[1:19:54 – 1:19:56] Adam: I’m going to keep it nice.
[1:19:57 – 1:19:58] Adam: Here’s my haiku.
[1:19:59 – 1:20:05] Adam: And as always with a haiku, it should be based in nature and in personal experience.
[1:20:07 – 1:20:15] Adam: Crab Lake Leisure Trip, Snapping Turtle Deep Breathing, Labrador Tea Horse.
[1:20:18 – 1:20:18] Erik: That’s good.
[1:20:19 – 1:20:19] Adam: Thank you.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:31] Adam: I still can’t get over that snapping turtle and how much noise it could make by breathing.
[1:20:33 – 1:20:34] Erik: Yeah, that was something else.
[1:20:35 – 1:20:37] Adam: I was looking back at the pictures from that trip last night.
[1:20:37 – 1:20:41] Adam: I was just like, that damn snapping turtle.
[1:20:41 – 1:20:43] Adam: You could hear it way back in the back of camp.
[1:20:44 – 1:20:47] Adam: You’d be back there messing with your hammock, and you’d hear it go…
[1:20:49 – 1:20:51] Erik: Yeah, even though I still don’t think I got any good audio.
[1:20:52 – 1:20:58] Adam: Yeah, you couldn’t capture it, but you could hear it in the campsite so clearly that it was infuriating.
[1:20:58 – 1:21:01] Adam: We couldn’t get better audio of its breathing.
[1:21:01 – 1:21:04] Adam: It was such a beautiful breathing turtle.
[1:21:04 – 1:21:05] Erik: Yeah, it was.
[1:21:06 – 1:21:09] Adam: That was a really good trip.
[1:21:11 – 1:21:11] Erik: It was.
[1:21:12 – 1:21:14] Erik: No mention of Chaney in the haiku.
[1:21:14 – 1:21:15] Erik: It’s probably a good thing.
[1:21:16 – 1:21:21] Adam: It’s too bad we didn’t make it to Mudro, but we’ll go in the spring.
[1:21:22 – 1:21:26] Adam: We didn’t go in the fall like we wanted to go, but you can’t fight the wind.
[1:21:28 – 1:21:31] Adam: You have little windows of time, and if the wind’s bad, you’re just not going to make it.
[1:21:31 – 1:21:35] Adam: But we’ll keep it on the list because it’s something I always wanted to do.
[1:21:35 – 1:21:36] Adam: It’s not going anywhere.
[1:21:36 – 1:21:37] Adam: I want to go to Mudro.
[1:21:37 – 1:21:37] Adam: Mudro.
[1:21:39 – 1:21:56] Erik: mud draw mud draw all right well my toes are frozen as usual still rocking the uh the extra toughs not known for their uh r value necessarily but do you get the fleece lined ones uh
[1:21:57 – 1:21:57] Erik: No.
[1:21:58 – 1:21:59] Erik: I got a pair coming.
[1:21:59 – 1:22:00] Erik: They’re fleece lined.
[1:22:00 – 1:22:02] Erik: I hope they’re just a little bit toastier.
[1:22:02 – 1:22:06] Adam: Thank you to Hopalicious for the Redwood Empire Lost Monarch.
[1:22:07 – 1:22:08] Adam: Bless your heart, sir.
[1:22:10 – 1:22:10] Adam: Thank you.
[1:22:10 – 1:22:11] Adam: Cheers.
[1:22:17 – 1:22:22] Adam: And, yeah, it’s about time to turn off the lights and the heater for the season.
[1:22:23 – 1:22:24] Adam: The loons are all gone, Eric.
[1:22:24 – 1:22:24] Erik: Yeah, they are.
[1:22:25 – 1:22:27] Adam: Thanks to everybody who listens to Tumble Home.
[1:22:28 – 1:22:31] Adam: As always, it’s a pleasure to be here in the shed with you, Eric.
[1:22:32 – 1:22:34] Adam: As with you, as always.
[1:22:34 – 1:22:43] Adam: And we’ll be back when the loons come back and, you know, when we can get back in the shed after all the snow melts probably.
[1:22:43 – 1:22:43] Adam: Yeah.
[1:22:44 – 1:22:46] Erik: No snow currently, but… You know it’s on its way.
[1:22:47 – 1:22:47] Erik: It’s coming.
[1:22:49 – 1:22:50] Erik: Yeah, and who knows?
[1:22:50 – 1:22:56] Erik: You might hear our voices sometime between now and then, but maybe not.
[1:22:57 – 1:22:57] Adam: Maybe not.
[1:22:57 – 1:22:58] Adam: You never know.
[1:22:58 – 1:22:59] Adam: That’s how winter usually goes.
[1:22:59 – 1:23:02] Erik: Yeah, winter is a fickle thing.
[1:23:02 – 1:23:09] Erik: But yeah, thanks everybody for the responses, the haikus, and the obvious support.
[1:23:09 – 1:23:11] Erik: We don’t need to talk about it for…
[1:23:13 – 1:23:20] Erik: 10 minutes like we seem to always do at the end of every season, but you all know what’s up.
[1:23:21 – 1:23:21] Erik: Thanks.
[1:23:22 – 1:23:22] Erik: Thank you.
[1:23:23 – 1:23:24] Adam: And good night.
[1:23:46 – 1:23:47] UNKNOWN: do
[1:24:24 – 1:24:25] UNKNOWN: Thank you.
[1:24:58 – 1:24:58] UNKNOWN: Bye.
[1:25:14 – 1:25:14] AdamPewPew: Thank you.
