Episode Transcript

[0:00:38 – 0:00:43] Adam: Welcome to Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast.
[0:00:44 – 0:00:44] Adam: Wow.
[0:00:45 – 0:00:50] Adam: My name is Adam, and joining me here in Studio K is my good friend Eric.
[0:00:50 – 0:00:51] Adam: Hello.
[0:00:51 – 0:00:52] Adam: And welcome.
[0:00:54 – 0:00:54] Erik: Season two.
[0:00:55 – 0:00:56] Erik: I’m kind of nervous.
[0:00:56 – 0:00:58] Erik: I haven’t been nervous on the show in a long time.
[0:00:58 – 0:00:58] Erik: Yeah.
[0:00:58 – 0:01:00] Erik: I got a lot of things going here.
[0:01:00 – 0:01:03] Adam: I don’t feel like I’m prepared at all for a show of this magnitude.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:04] Adam: No.
[0:01:05 – 0:01:08] Adam: Well, the only way to know if you’re ready is just to hit record.
[0:01:08 – 0:01:08] Erik: Just to go.
[0:01:08 – 0:01:10] Erik: Start pressing the red buttons and see what happens.
[0:01:10 – 0:01:11] Adam: There’s a lot of buttons now.
[0:01:12 – 0:01:18] Erik: Yeah, so worst case scenario, this will come out as a podcast, obviously.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:19] Erik: We’ve got that figured out.
[0:01:20 – 0:01:22] Erik: But there’s also this little camera over here.
[0:01:23 – 0:01:26] Erik: We’ll see what ends up happening with that.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:32] Erik: Hopefully we can get that up onto a YouTube channel for people to see if they want to…
[0:01:33 – 0:01:55] Erik: see us it’s like everything else we’ve done kind of a learning process so i think it’s only going to get better but you got to start somewhere so but if you are listening that’s cool too most people are probably just listening yeah hopefully i didn’t do my hair at all we are all about this red blinking light i’m just gonna it’s gonna take some getting used to
[0:01:55 – 0:01:57] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:57 – 0:02:08] Erik: Yeah, you can’t be picking the nose or… We really might have to wear actual pants and not just like… Well, I think from the waist up, we’re being recorded right now.
[0:02:08 – 0:02:10] Adam: I’m pretty respectable from the waist up.
[0:02:10 – 0:02:12] Adam: I got a button shirt on today.
[0:02:12 – 0:02:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:02:13 – 0:02:15] Adam: So we are, as always…
[0:02:16 – 0:02:24] Erik: sponsored by Clearwater Historic Lodge and Canoe Outfitters, as well as listeners just like you.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:28] Erik: We are on that beautiful thing called Patreon.
[0:02:29 – 0:02:32] Erik: Information on that in the show notes if you’d like to support us.
[0:02:32 – 0:02:35] Erik: We’re going to be shouting out some patrons at the end of the show.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:35] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:02:36 – 0:02:41] Erik: And maybe running down what those fine patrons are going to be getting coming their way here soon.
[0:02:42 – 0:02:42] Erik: And…
[0:02:44 – 0:02:47] Erik: It is the season two premiere.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:54] Erik: So we’re getting fancy today with the beer sponsorship.
[0:02:55 – 0:02:56] Erik: Do you want to say who this one’s from?
[0:02:57 – 0:02:58] Adam: Yeah, sure.
[0:02:58 – 0:03:00] Adam: So it’s from my father.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:00] Adam: Dodd.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:01] Adam: Dodd.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:06] Adam: We’ve been hanging on to this for like half of a year.
[0:03:06 – 0:03:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:08 – 0:03:09] Adam: I didn’t even know what it was.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:15] Adam: And he apparently gave it to Eric on my wedding day.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:16] Erik: He didn’t trust you with it.
[0:03:16 – 0:03:19] Adam: He said, I don’t trust Adam with this.
[0:03:19 – 0:03:20] Adam: You hang on to it.
[0:03:20 – 0:03:21] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:22 – 0:03:23] Adam: Yeah, we’ve been hanging on to it.
[0:03:23 – 0:03:28] Adam: I think you pretty much immediately, I don’t think you ever told me exactly what it was.
[0:03:28 – 0:03:34] Adam: It’s just that we had some very fancy beers lined up for the season two premiere, and they’re from my dad.
[0:03:34 – 0:03:36] Adam: So anyways, thanks, Dad.
[0:03:37 – 0:03:45] Adam: You could have trusted me, I think, but it worked out, and so we got ourselves a beautiful Chimay.
[0:03:46 – 0:03:48] Adam: Grand Reserve Ale.
[0:03:49 – 0:03:50] Erik: Yeah, it’s Trappist.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:52] Erik: Oh, I love this stuff.
[0:03:53 – 0:03:59] Erik: We’re going to hopefully get some sweet audio here of kind of why we hung on to it.
[0:04:00 – 0:04:03] Erik: It’s something worth getting the nice audio on.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:05] Adam: To cork.
[0:04:06 – 0:04:06] Erik: Here we go.
[0:04:09 – 0:04:09] Erik: Season two.
[0:04:10 – 0:04:10] Erik: Thanks, everybody.
[0:04:10 – 0:04:13] Erik: We’re back every Sunday.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:14] Erik: You can look forward to hearing.
[0:04:14 – 0:04:17] Erik: And if you really, really want seeing us.
[0:04:17 – 0:04:19] Erik: But so.
[0:04:21 – 0:04:22] Erik: Pour these into some glasses.
[0:04:22 – 0:04:24] Adam: We actually got some glasses out.
[0:04:25 – 0:04:30] Adam: I hope these are appropriate for this lovely ale.
[0:04:30 – 0:04:32] Adam: I think they’ll do the trick.
[0:04:33 – 0:04:34] Erik: I think so.
[0:04:34 – 0:04:35] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:39] Adam: That’s like 50% beer, 50% head.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:42] Erik: Man, oh, man, these things.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:48] Erik: You got to pour them at like a 179-degree angle, like almost flat.
[0:04:49 – 0:04:50] Erik: Yeah.
[0:04:51 – 0:04:51] Erik: If you want to trade.
[0:04:52 – 0:04:53] Erik: Sure, I’ll trade you back.
[0:04:55 – 0:05:02] Adam: Yeah, I think that he got these directly in France from Trappist.
[0:05:02 – 0:05:03] Erik: Oh, wow.
[0:05:03 – 0:05:04] Erik: Really?
[0:05:04 – 0:05:04] Erik: Belgium.
[0:05:05 – 0:05:05] Adam: That was embarrassing.
[0:05:05 – 0:05:06] Adam: Can you edit that out?
[0:05:07 – 0:05:07] Erik: No.
[0:05:07 – 0:05:11] Erik: This is all, like, that’s going to be the tricky thing going forward.
[0:05:12 – 0:05:13] Erik: The video that might…
[0:05:13 – 0:05:14] Adam: The video won’t lie.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:15] Adam: The video won’t lie.
[0:05:15 – 0:05:23] Erik: I can definitely edit the recordings here, but the video… Edit that Starbucks cup out of the scene, please.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:24] Adam: Oh, geez.
[0:05:24 – 0:05:25] Adam: All right.
[0:05:25 – 0:05:25] Adam: All right, here we go.
[0:05:25 – 0:05:27] Adam: From Belgium, this beautiful ale.
[0:05:27 – 0:05:28] Adam: Thank you.
[0:05:28 – 0:05:28] Adam: Cheers.
[0:05:37 – 0:05:37] Erik: Oh, man.
[0:05:38 – 0:05:42] Erik: Do you remember the trip we took?
[0:05:43 – 0:05:52] Erik: We were the month in Cuetico, and we bought one of these Chimays in Ely and met up with some…
[0:05:54 – 0:05:54] Erik: Solid.
[0:05:55 – 0:05:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:05:55 – 0:05:57] Erik: Shout out Mike’s Liquors in Ely.
[0:05:57 – 0:05:58] Erik: Beautiful selection.
[0:05:59 – 0:06:06] Erik: And we ended up in the parking lot at the Fall Lake Campground with some friends of Paige and just like passed around a bottle of Chimay.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:08] Adam: Real classy.
[0:06:08 – 0:06:09] Adam: Real classy.
[0:06:09 – 0:06:13] Adam: And then we paddled out to our campsite and slept for a whole day.
[0:06:14 – 0:06:14] Adam: Yep.
[0:06:14 – 0:06:20] Erik: So it is the season premiere of season two.
[0:06:21 – 0:06:25] Erik: We’re going to be getting to some of your comments via Reddit.
[0:06:26 – 0:06:26] Erik: Where are you heading?
[0:06:27 – 0:06:28] Erik: What are your plans?
[0:06:28 – 0:06:31] Erik: The open water season is upon us.
[0:06:32 – 0:06:39] Erik: As of today, May 8th, things are a bit icy on some of the larger border lakes.
[0:06:39 – 0:06:42] Erik: Clearwater is still about 85% iced in.
[0:06:45 – 0:06:47] Erik: But I did see a loon.
[0:06:48 – 0:06:48] Erik: You did.
[0:06:48 – 0:06:52] Erik: So, you know, that’s, I mean, we… That was going to be my first question.
[0:06:52 – 0:06:54] Adam: I have not yet.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:56] Erik: Yes, there was a loon on Swamper.
[0:06:56 – 0:06:57] Erik: So we are coming in.
[0:06:58 – 0:06:58] Erik: Yes.
[0:06:58 – 0:07:00] Erik: Well, you listeners already know.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:01] Erik: They’ve heard it.
[0:07:01 – 0:07:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:02 – 0:07:02] Erik: They’ve heard it.
[0:07:03 – 0:07:04] Adam: I’m truly surprised.
[0:07:05 – 0:07:05] Adam: I was wondering.
[0:07:06 – 0:07:07] Adam: I’m not surprised.
[0:07:07 – 0:07:09] Adam: I thought maybe it was a chance.
[0:07:09 – 0:07:12] Erik: I haven’t actually heard one, but I saw a big loon on Swamper.
[0:07:13 – 0:07:13] Erik: So…
[0:07:13 – 0:07:20] Adam: Yeah, see, Natalie thought she had heard one back here around the river on the Cayadence itself.
[0:07:20 – 0:07:24] Adam: And that one’s been open for a while, but I don’t know.
[0:07:24 – 0:07:27] Adam: I’ve seen some loons on some very small bodies of water.
[0:07:27 – 0:07:28] Adam: They need a lot of room to take off.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:30] Adam: All right, I can see how you got in here.
[0:07:30 – 0:07:32] Adam: Anyone can land in there.
[0:07:32 – 0:07:32] Erik: Yeah, right.
[0:07:32 – 0:07:34] Adam: You know, a loon takes off.
[0:07:34 – 0:07:35] Erik: Circling, circling.
[0:07:35 – 0:07:35] Erik: Oh, my God.
[0:07:36 – 0:07:41] Erik: Kind of push themselves through the woods to a larger opening.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:47] Adam: You know my little pond on the land over yonder, over by Devil’s Track?
[0:07:47 – 0:07:47] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:48 – 0:07:52] Adam: There’s that little vernal pond about the size of my house, maybe.
[0:07:53 – 0:08:00] Adam: And there was, Joshipu saw a loon in there one time when there was some water standing there in the spring.
[0:08:00 – 0:08:02] Adam: And they were like, how did it get out of there?
[0:08:02 – 0:08:03] Adam: That’s crazy.
[0:08:03 – 0:08:05] Adam: It’s surrounded by very tall trees, too.
[0:08:05 – 0:08:06] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:07] Adam: So who knows?
[0:08:07 – 0:08:08] Adam: They’re loons.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:08] Adam: They can handle it.
[0:08:09 – 0:08:13] Adam: So I would say they probably could have been on the river, no problem, if they could land on that pond.
[0:08:13 – 0:08:17] Erik: Probably easier to take off in a little bit more of a straight shot like that.
[0:08:17 – 0:08:17] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:17 – 0:08:18] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:08:18 – 0:08:20] Adam: So we’ve got a possible hearing of a loon.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:21] Adam: I’ll say probable.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:24] Adam: She’s pretty good with her bird song, so…
[0:08:24 – 0:08:27] Adam: She heard one back here and you saw one.
[0:08:27 – 0:08:28] Adam: Definitely saw one.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:28] Adam: It’s loon season.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:29] Erik: The loons are back.
[0:08:29 – 0:08:29] Erik: All right.
[0:08:30 – 0:08:32] Erik: Loon intro is in full effect.
[0:08:36 – 0:08:40] Erik: Now I only have to find one chiptune song every week instead of two.
[0:08:42 – 0:08:50] Erik: So I think we should start with our recap thoughts.
[0:08:51 – 0:09:14] Erik: and shout outs from our experiences at midwest mountaineering outdoor expo yeah that’s a good place to start before we get to i think we’ll get to the what are you doing this year i’m really looking forward to that it’s one of those things where we put it out and then i just never look at it again because i want to come through and like just be surprised and yeah take it on first read yeah but um
[0:09:15 – 0:09:17] Erik: So I think just first of all, let’s recap.
[0:09:17 – 0:09:18] Erik: It was a couple of weekends ago.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:22] Erik: Now we were down in Minneapolis and at the Midwest Mountaineering Expo.
[0:09:22 – 0:09:23] Erik: It was great.
[0:09:23 – 0:09:24] Erik: It was awesome.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:30] Erik: Super surprised at the amount of people that came out.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:34] Adam: See, I didn’t know what to expect.
[0:09:34 – 0:09:35] Adam: It seemed pretty busy.
[0:09:35 – 0:09:35] Erik: Yeah.
[0:09:35 – 0:09:36] Adam: I’ve never been.
[0:09:36 – 0:09:42] Adam: I’ve been to Canoacopia before, and it seems like that’s about how many people are at one of those things.
[0:09:43 – 0:09:47] Erik: It seems like the people out at Midwest Mountaineering, they know a little bit more.
[0:09:47 – 0:09:51] Erik: There aren’t those first two, wait, wait, what?
[0:09:51 – 0:09:52] Erik: Where’s Cook County?
[0:09:52 – 0:09:54] Adam: What’s the Boundary Waters?
[0:09:54 – 0:09:57] Erik: You don’t have to go through that first initial setup.
[0:09:57 – 0:10:00] Erik: It’s like the conversations were a step further.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:22] Erik: beyond that initial tell me about where you are as soon as the boundary waters okay as soon as you said gunflint trail like most people you could see the light go on like yeah yeah okay yeah canucopia is like cook county you mean more like crook county illinois am i right no not the one down in talking about shy to illinois yeah no we’re up on the gunflint yeah
[0:10:22 – 0:10:23] Erik: Oh, is it a trail?
[0:10:23 – 0:10:24] Erik: Do you bike it?
[0:10:24 – 0:10:25] Erik: Do you hike it?
[0:10:25 – 0:10:26] Erik: Is it a paddling trail?
[0:10:26 – 0:10:27] Erik: It’s a paddling trail.
[0:10:27 – 0:10:32] Erik: And that’s fine that people are needing a little bit more of an explanation, but there’s also…
[0:10:32 – 0:10:38] Adam: So it’s not that they’re bozies in Madison, but it’s just that it’s a different level of show.
[0:10:38 – 0:10:38] Adam: Is there more?
[0:10:38 – 0:10:40] Adam: It’s called Canoe Copia, though.
[0:10:40 – 0:10:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:43] Adam: So it should be all about people who know about canoeing, really.
[0:10:43 – 0:10:46] Adam: But it’s probably half kayak-copia at this point, am I wrong?
[0:10:46 – 0:10:48] Erik: Yeah, paddle-copia.
[0:10:48 – 0:10:59] Adam: Whereas Midwest mountaineering, there was like booths for African safaris and climbing a mountain to stop forms of cancer?
[0:10:59 – 0:11:00] Adam: I guess it was climbing a mountain to…
[0:11:01 – 0:11:02] Adam: help with cancer research.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:03] Erik: Something like that.
[0:11:03 – 0:11:06] Adam: Yeah, you’re raising funds via climbing of mountains.
[0:11:07 – 0:11:13] Adam: And then there was quite a few different paddling booths, both for, like, lodging, outfitters.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:15] Adam: I saw one for…
[0:11:16 – 0:11:37] Erik: voyagers national park was right next door they were right next to us yep um we also on the way down we got up real early the friday morning of that show and as we were driving we were kind of joking about like because we knew the other boundary waters podcast was going to be there we heard rumors yeah rumors and pretty certain that we were going to see them
[0:11:37 – 0:11:40] Erik: And so we’re talking like, man, what if we end up like right across from them?
[0:11:41 – 0:11:44] Erik: Like we’re on, we’re not like, it’s just a funny little thing.
[0:11:44 – 0:11:46] Erik: It’s obviously they’re two different shows.
[0:11:46 – 0:11:47] Erik: We do two different things.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:52] Erik: But of course we get, we get checked in and we’re kind of walking down the aisle.
[0:11:52 – 0:11:53] Erik: Booth 48 or whatever we were.
[0:11:53 – 0:11:53] Erik: Yeah.
[0:11:54 – 0:11:55] Erik: And I’m like, oh no, there they are.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:56] Adam: They’re right there.
[0:11:56 – 0:11:57] Adam: We were right next to each other.
[0:11:58 – 0:12:00] Adam: And the booths are pretty small.
[0:12:00 – 0:12:03] Adam: So we were basically just hanging out all in one area right there.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:03] Adam: Yeah.
[0:12:04 – 0:12:32] Erik: podcaster’s row yep but it was funny because you’d have people coming from either direction where they’d start and be talking to us and they’re like oh a Boundary Waters podcast oh that’s cool and then you overhear them just the next booth down yeah oh you also have a Boundary Waters podcast it’s like how many Boundary Waters podcasts are there the joke was yeah these are the best two though yes for sure hands down the best two Boundary Waters podcasts there are so yeah we’re the best one that comes out every week
[0:12:33 – 0:12:47] Adam: every week starting starting this sunday what was the most awkward though is that you could the booths are very small and so you could definitely like hear each other talking at times if like you weren’t currently engaged with speaking with somebody so you could hear their like
[0:12:50 – 0:12:53] Adam: I don’t know what to call it, you know, just like their banter.
[0:12:53 – 0:12:55] Adam: And then I’m sure they could hear us talking to people.
[0:12:56 – 0:12:56] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:12:56 – 0:12:59] Adam: It was a little, it was interesting just to hear the approach.
[0:12:59 – 0:13:03] Erik: I mean, and they were there just with the podcast.
[0:13:03 – 0:13:05] Erik: So they were selling it.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:08] Adam: The North shore community radio for sure.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:10] Adam: Like the station manager was there for a while.
[0:13:11 – 0:13:39] Erik: yeah and like it is more than it’s more of a joke than anything else like it’s not like we’re i mean we’re on good terms obviously we were like talking back and forth they there’s plenty of of park out there for two podcasts for sure yeah and they do a different kind of show so it was just funny like of course there’s like 75 booths in here and we ended up right next to theirs so um but yeah like we were there as clearwater canoe outfitters and uh the
[0:13:40 – 0:14:05] Erik: the podcast yeah we mentioned it here for like a few weeks straight but um it wasn’t that huge like we didn’t push it that much so i was very surprised that the number of people that came out it was great um we ran into some people that we had only ever known as uh screen names on reddit yeah reddit friends which was very fun um people friends
[0:14:06 – 0:14:09] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know how many of them we want to shout out necessarily or not.
[0:14:10 – 0:14:15] Erik: I think we definitely need to shout out Claire.
[0:14:16 – 0:14:16] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:14:17 – 0:14:19] Adam: And I think we should try to… Top shout out from the show.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:23] Erik: Yeah, I think we should try to pull it off the wall, at least for the video.
[0:14:23 – 0:14:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:23 – 0:14:25] Erik: We’ll take a picture of it.
[0:14:25 – 0:14:25] Erik: Let’s do it.
[0:14:26 – 0:14:27] Erik: We were there for…
[0:14:27 – 0:14:29] Erik: I think it was like the middle of the second day.
[0:14:30 – 0:14:31] Adam: It was on Saturday, yeah.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:32] Erik: And…
[0:14:33 – 0:14:42] Erik: She came over and just, like, gave us this, like, box, like, just thanking us for doing the show and wanted to give us this gift.
[0:14:42 – 0:14:51] Erik: And it’s, like, this amazing, like, laser-etched, like, circle, like, custom-made tumble home of Boundary Waters Podcasts.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:58] Erik: little logo thing that now that we’re doing a video is like perfectly like hung in the middle of the map here.
[0:14:59 – 0:15:02] Erik: Um, the way that this camera works, it is like super far away.
[0:15:03 – 0:15:03] Erik: So,
[0:15:03 – 0:15:07] Adam: Yeah, it’s like a multi-layered wooden wall sculpture.
[0:15:07 – 0:15:08] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:15:09 – 0:15:10] Adam: Here, I got it pinned up here on top.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:12] Adam: I’ll just pull that pin.
[0:15:13 – 0:15:19] Adam: So we have it hanging up on the map wall, and it’s just south of the Fungus Lake PMA.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:21] Adam: We’re not covering up anything too important.
[0:15:21 – 0:15:28] Adam: Bunny Lake, Sylvania Lake, you know, I mean, you can still see the timber-free air loop off to the right there.
[0:15:28 – 0:15:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:29 – 0:15:31] Adam: Isabella is getting kind of pinched out there, but…
[0:15:32 – 0:15:33] Adam: Yeah, it’s really nice.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:37] Adam: It had an inscription on the back too, which I didn’t notice at the time.
[0:15:37 – 0:15:41] Adam: And so that was pretty nice as well, a little personalized inscription.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:42] Erik: It’s super cool.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:51] Erik: I mean, there was certain points during that show where I was like – I mean, it was like borderline emotional for me where I was like, oh, man.
[0:15:51 – 0:16:02] Erik: I mean, yeah, we definitely do this for fun, but there was a lot of people that we talked to who were like, yeah, you – there’s something about the way that you guys do that show and what you talk about that –
[0:16:02 – 0:16:27] Erik: like brings me to the boundary waters relaxes me there was one person that we talked to who has like a 16 year old daughter who like she comes home from like school and she’s stressed out and she uses it to kind of decompress at the end of the day and just to kind of take her mind off of i mean i can’t even imagine what high school is like now but i remember when in high school was like every other day there was something else like some deadline or something so
[0:16:27 – 0:16:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:16:28 – 0:16:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:16:28 – 0:16:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:16:48 – 0:16:59] Erik: Um, not that there’s anything wrong with spending time with your own thoughts, obviously, but, um, I prefer to be like, you know, using some of those times to, to listen to something.
[0:16:59 – 0:17:06] Erik: And even if there’s just two people out there, um, that get something out of the show, it’s amazing, but it sounds like there’s a lot more than that.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:08] Erik: So, um,
[0:17:08 – 0:17:11] Erik: Yeah, and I mean, I don’t know what else to say besides thanks.
[0:17:12 – 0:17:13] Erik: And so we’re going to hang this back up.
[0:17:14 – 0:17:15] Erik: It’s going to be in the studio.
[0:17:16 – 0:17:22] Erik: Now that we have the video going, I think it’s a perfect little centerpiece with the big map wall there.
[0:17:22 – 0:17:23] Adam: Yeah, it’s incredible.
[0:17:24 – 0:17:29] Adam: I still don’t really understand how lasers could do something like that, but very talented.
[0:17:29 – 0:17:30] Adam: It’s not the lasers, obviously.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:33] Adam: It’s a piece of artwork there.
[0:17:34 – 0:17:35] Erik: Yeah, the thought is amazing.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:35] Erik: Thank you, Claire.
[0:17:36 – 0:17:38] Adam: We got a wolf on there on the bottom.
[0:17:38 – 0:17:40] Adam: And then… Maybe us.
[0:17:40 – 0:17:42] Adam: Two people paddling a canoe.
[0:17:42 – 0:17:44] Adam: So that’s probably…
[0:17:44 – 0:17:45] Adam: I can imagine it being us.
[0:17:46 – 0:17:47] Adam: I think I can tell anybody.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:50] Erik: That’s me in the back because you can tell that person’s paddling on the right.
[0:17:51 – 0:18:14] Adam: yeah i mean it’s truly uh magnificent so thank you to claire that was really claire and uh who’s um tyler tyler dropped off some beers yeah shout out to tyler for dropping off beers shout out to tyler and the uh what was it the tamarack brew pub that he gave us uh if i have those on me
[0:18:14 – 0:18:36] Erik: i i had them somewhere but now all of a sudden we’re just like in the studio here and i i think they’re like we’re not totally they’re just like six feet away i think it was like the tamarack brew pub and woodbury and fact check us yeah those beers have not been cracked and you will get an official sponsorship tyler don’t you worry yeah we hung on to them we were good yeah um we had uh
[0:18:37 – 0:18:38] Adam: Rojo Ryder.
[0:18:38 – 0:18:39] Erik: Rojo Ryder.
[0:18:39 – 0:18:42] Erik: We haven’t been on to Reddit yet, but I’m assuming he’s left a comment.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:43] Erik: I hope so.
[0:18:43 – 0:18:46] Erik: We met him, his family, and his friends.
[0:18:47 – 0:18:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:47 – 0:18:49] Adam: And they did buy us a beer.
[0:18:50 – 0:18:50] Adam: They did?
[0:18:50 – 0:18:53] Adam: There was a couple taps at the show.
[0:18:54 – 0:18:57] Adam: It felt like Tori… Tori maybe… Kind of cajoled them into doing that.
[0:18:58 – 0:19:00] Adam: But, you know, nevertheless.
[0:19:00 – 0:19:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:01 – 0:19:05] Adam: She really got them to like… She got in their ear somehow and they came back with beers.
[0:19:05 – 0:19:05] Adam: Yes.
[0:19:05 – 0:19:06] Adam: So…
[0:19:07 – 0:19:12] Erik: And then we saw them the next day as well when we were out in the sunshine on the street drinking at the… At the beer garden.
[0:19:13 – 0:19:16] Erik: Whatever the name of the Republic pub or whatever that was up the road.
[0:19:17 – 0:19:20] Adam: Yeah, just down the way in the seven corners.
[0:19:20 – 0:19:21] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:21 – 0:19:22] Adam: Right across from Bullwinkle’s.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:24] Erik: Oh, we never got into Bullwinkle’s.
[0:19:24 – 0:19:25] Erik: We never did go to Bullwinkle’s.
[0:19:25 – 0:19:26] Erik: Man, oh man.
[0:19:27 – 0:19:28] Adam: And the cabaret.
[0:19:28 – 0:19:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:30 – 0:19:33] Adam: Every Saturday at midnight, Balls Cabaret.
[0:19:33 – 0:19:34] Adam: Balls Cabaret?
[0:19:34 – 0:19:34] Adam: What’s that?
[0:19:34 – 0:19:40] Adam: We had to walk underneath that sign like 12 times on the weekend, and I still don’t know what a Balls Cabaret is.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:41] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:19:41 – 0:19:43] Erik: I’m not really prepared to find out.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:44] Erik: I just want to leave it a mystery.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:46] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:46 – 0:19:51] Erik: The hashtag women conquering the man chain, women stopped by.
[0:19:51 – 0:19:53] Adam: That was a really good conversation.
[0:19:53 – 0:19:55] Adam: They got some big plans.
[0:19:55 – 0:19:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:55 – 0:19:57] Erik: They’re like eyeing up big rivers in Canada.
[0:19:57 – 0:19:57] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:59 – 0:20:02] Adam: Yeah, they’re shooting for the moon this year.
[0:20:02 – 0:20:06] Adam: I don’t feel like I’m shooting for much compared to them.
[0:20:06 – 0:20:10] Erik: Well, it’s just like I haven’t had enough time to think about more than just the next trip.
[0:20:10 – 0:20:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:20:11 – 0:20:14] Erik: And it does involve a river, but not quite to their extent.
[0:20:14 – 0:20:17] Erik: So it was really nice to see them because we missed them last summer.
[0:20:17 – 0:20:20] Erik: They dropped by the Laser Loon beers.
[0:20:24 – 0:20:34] Erik: so yeah it was great to see them i mean so many other people too that just like i mean we’re probably missing like another couple dozen people we could have kept a pretty extensive list but uh
[0:20:35 – 0:20:58] Adam: know we appreciate everybody who stopped by you could always kind of tell somebody to stop by and then be like i love the show yeah and then you know we did just get right into talking about something either a trip or something about the show or start looking at the map immediately and pointing stuff out so and that was just great times it could be a little overwhelming sitting there getting excited and talking with that many people about something over the course of three days yeah um
[0:21:00 – 0:21:03] Adam: But I do like to talk a lot, and especially I like to look at maps.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:05] Adam: It was a lot of fun.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:07] Adam: For the most part, that’s what it is.
[0:21:08 – 0:21:15] Adam: People come up, you enthusiastically look at maps together and talk about paddling and getting in the park.
[0:21:16 – 0:21:17] Erik: Yes, it was great.
[0:21:17 – 0:21:23] Erik: I think the last episode we were talking about, like, oh, April is the worst month or whatever.
[0:21:23 – 0:21:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:38] Erik: But that was really nice to get that kind of energy from others injected into my psyche in terms of looking forward to the upcoming season, which is like it’s here.
[0:21:38 – 0:21:41] Erik: I mean, I guarantee there’s people doing trips over out of Ely.
[0:21:42 – 0:21:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:42 – 0:22:07] Adam: yeah i feel a lot more real about it now though because when we were down there still it was a ways off you know it’s still april yeah well when we left it was yeah it was there’s everybody’s like i don’t know there’s chance of some pretty good snow when you guys get back oh and then oh snow it did so that kind of socked me in the guts a little bit when we uh picked up like 14 inches here at studio k and i think you guys had more than that up the
[0:22:07 – 0:22:09] Erik: No, you had more.
[0:22:09 – 0:22:10] Erik: I think we only had like 8 or 10.
[0:22:10 – 0:22:11] Erik: Oh, my God.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:12] Erik: Demoralizing.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:23] Erik: It was just like one of those things, the worst part about it, it was one of those forecasts where it’s like, eh, maybe like 2 to 5 inches, and then you’re thinking, well, the ground’s been warming up so much, we probably won’t even get half that.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:26] Erik: And then later on in that day when it was just still snowing.
[0:22:26 – 0:22:28] Adam: No, Monday I left for work.
[0:22:28 – 0:22:32] Adam: I was working later, and I left at about 10, and we had like 4 or 5 already.
[0:22:33 – 0:22:34] Adam: And then by…
[0:22:34 – 0:22:49] Adam: you know five or six it was like there’s a foot of snow up the hell now what yeah i think saw bill got 16 yeah i literally i was about to like leave work early i had an interview scheduled though i like couldn’t cancel so i just stuck around and
[0:22:51 – 0:22:57] Adam: I made it, but if I had met another car coming home, I would have been in the ditch somehow.
[0:22:57 – 0:22:57] Adam: No way.
[0:22:58 – 0:23:07] Erik: And it was right in that time of year where the plows aren’t going to be super excited about getting out and plowing some of these dirt roads because they’re super soft.
[0:23:07 – 0:23:10] Erik: And if they do that, they get messed up.
[0:23:10 – 0:23:12] Erik: Yeah, home road is wrecked right now.
[0:23:12 – 0:23:13] Erik: Everything’s wrecked.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:16] Erik: I feel like half my car is falling apart every time I go over a bump.
[0:23:17 – 0:23:19] Erik: And the back windshield is going to fall out any moment.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:26] Adam: So it was really nice to get down to the cities, even though that all happened later.
[0:23:26 – 0:23:30] Adam: But at the moment, it was great just seeing the trees budding out.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:32] Adam: It was just a little bit warmer.
[0:23:32 – 0:23:35] Adam: I think I got a pretty good amount of sun on Friday.
[0:23:36 – 0:23:38] Erik: We did get a couple of rounds in it.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:41] Erik: Shout out to Acorn Park in Roseville.
[0:23:41 – 0:23:45] Adam: That is a beautiful 18 holes of disc golf down there.
[0:23:45 – 0:23:49] Adam: Really a lot of timber, even without the trees totally leafed in.
[0:23:49 – 0:23:54] Adam: I can’t imagine what that course play is like fully fullished out.
[0:23:54 – 0:23:56] Erik: Yeah, lots of water hazards, a little wet this time of year.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:58] Adam: Yeah, pretty puddly.
[0:23:58 – 0:24:03] Adam: And I think I hit about 15 or 16 trees in the first three holes.
[0:24:03 – 0:24:03] Erik: At least.
[0:24:04 – 0:24:06] Adam: But I still managed to play a pretty nice round.
[0:24:07 – 0:24:09] Adam: I rang up like three birdies in a row at one point.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:12] Adam: Yeah, made some solid putts.
[0:24:12 – 0:24:14] Erik: I made better putts down there than I’ve ever made at Lutzen.
[0:24:14 – 0:24:15] Erik: I don’t know what was going on.
[0:24:15 – 0:24:16] Adam: Pressure’s off.
[0:24:16 – 0:24:18] Adam: You’re just on a vacation course.
[0:24:18 – 0:24:19] Adam: You’re not in league play.
[0:24:19 – 0:24:22] Erik: Surrounded by a bunch of fellow much better throwers.
[0:24:23 – 0:24:25] Adam: No, we were just out there playing a loose round.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:27] Adam: It was a good course, good fun, got some sun in.
[0:24:28 – 0:24:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:28 – 0:24:34] Adam: And I think the worst part of the trip was just stressing over parking in the monster truck.
[0:24:34 – 0:24:34] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:24:35 – 0:24:46] Erik: The Clearwater, that huge four-door extended cab F-150, that thing is not meant to be driven around in anything closer than Hinkley, Minnesota to the cities.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:50] Erik: There should be a 250-mile radius where the car battery just dies.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:51] Erik: You’re not allowed to even exit.
[0:24:52 – 0:24:52] Erik: No, you need to keep…
[0:24:53 – 0:25:18] Erik: this on two lane highways or dirt roads because that was yeah that was a drag i’ve never seen anybody hit one of those things in a parking garage oh the dangling the danglers yeah like clearance signs the canoe rack yeah the canoe rack r.i.p dangler yeah that was a oh man dropping that thing off and knowing that i was going to be done with it for the weekend was a great feeling um
[0:25:19 – 0:25:31] Erik: So yeah, anything else that you want to say on the show a couple weeks ago before we get into the season at hand and where some of our listeners and responders are coming from?
[0:25:32 – 0:25:33] Adam: No, I don’t know.
[0:25:33 – 0:25:36] Adam: I enjoyed the good food and the walk down by the river, too.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:39] Adam: That was a nice highlight of Saturday.
[0:25:39 – 0:25:43] Adam: We did get to meet up with some friends, but we didn’t stay out too late.
[0:25:43 – 0:25:49] Adam: I honestly thought we were going to stay out later, and then we ended up like, well, still kind of razzed up.
[0:25:49 – 0:25:51] Adam: Let’s go for a walk down by the river.
[0:25:51 – 0:25:53] Adam: I’ve never been down by the Mississippi.
[0:25:54 – 0:26:19] Erik: in the city there it’s a really a cool waterfront area yeah the stone arch walking bridge is a fun place to spend some time with all the lights and all the teens hold on prom oh it was prom prom shenanigans everywhere oh yeah we saw some shout out to uh quangs as well down there and uh i don’t even know where that we got we got driven around while we were down there so i don’t know where that was um
[0:26:21 – 0:26:22] Adam: Eat Street, whatever that means.
[0:26:22 – 0:26:23] Adam: Somewhere down in Eat Street, yeah.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:25] Erik: We go to Minneapolis like once a year.
[0:26:25 – 0:26:26] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:26:26 – 0:26:35] Adam: I have a pretty good sense of direction when I’m in the Boundary Waters, but you put me in the middle of the city with a bunch of streets going north-south and I somehow get all perplexed.
[0:26:35 – 0:26:35] Erik: Yeah.
[0:26:36 – 0:26:39] Adam: So anyhow, yeah, I think that says enough about it.
[0:26:39 – 0:26:40] Adam: We sure did have a good time.
[0:26:40 – 0:26:42] Adam: It was awesome.
[0:26:42 – 0:26:44] Adam: You know, yeah, thanks, sir.
[0:26:44 – 0:26:51] Adam: It was fun talking with everybody and, I don’t know, got some cool stickers and gave out a few stickers.
[0:26:51 – 0:26:54] Adam: So I’m hoping to see some Tumble Home stickers somewhere.
[0:26:55 – 0:26:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:26:55 – 0:27:01] Adam: Like I want to like be at an entry point this summer and there’s somebody with a Tumble Home sticker on their car.
[0:27:01 – 0:27:02] Adam: That’s going to really make my day.
[0:27:02 – 0:27:10] Erik: Well, yeah, we’ll, we’ll talk about this more in depth at the end of this show, but we do have, um, there’s only two of these in existence.
[0:27:10 – 0:27:12] Adam: Oh, I know what you’re talking about already then.
[0:27:12 – 0:27:18] Erik: So there’s a potential for patrons of the show to get access to this very special.
[0:27:18 – 0:27:19] Erik: Exclusive.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:20] Erik: Exclusive club.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:24] Adam: Yeah, we’re giving away the Tumble Home stickers, but this one, this is special stuff.
[0:27:24 – 0:27:25] Adam: This is special stuff.
[0:27:25 – 0:27:26] Adam: We’ll get to that later.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:27] Erik: We will.
[0:27:27 – 0:27:28] Erik: We’ll finish up with that.
[0:27:29 – 0:27:32] Erik: I think in the meantime, I’m very excited to go through.
[0:27:33 – 0:27:38] Erik: Got a lot of responses on Reddit from where people are planning on heading this summer.
[0:27:38 – 0:27:39] Erik: Do you want to read those?
[0:27:40 – 0:27:42] Erik: Should we do a little quick pause?
[0:27:43 – 0:27:45] Adam: Digital Reddit.
[0:27:45 – 0:27:47] Adam: Yeah, we should pause.
[0:27:47 – 0:27:48] Adam: That was not good enough.
[0:27:49 – 0:27:50] Erik: I mean, yeah, we’ll pause.
[0:27:50 – 0:27:55] Erik: We’ll let you get a little breath back in you.
[0:27:55 – 0:27:55] Erik: A little more steam.
[0:27:56 – 0:28:00] Erik: A little bit of steam back in for the first actually digital Reddit.
[0:28:00 – 0:28:01] Erik: No printed Reddit today.
[0:28:01 – 0:28:04] Erik: Yeah, we got good internet here.
[0:28:04 – 0:28:06] Erik: Make sure everything’s in order.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:18] Erik: And, yeah, if you’re really interested in seeing what happens when we take these breaks, you’re going to find out if you want to go to the YouTube page and watch this video because we are not stopping that video button until we’re done.
[0:28:21 – 0:28:21] Adam: Digital Reddit.
[0:28:26 – 0:28:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:28:26 – 0:28:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:28:27 – 0:28:27] Adam: All right.
[0:28:28 – 0:28:30] Adam: So, yeah, we have the Reddit pulled up.
[0:28:30 – 0:28:34] Adam: We haven’t really not been on the Reddit much lately.
[0:28:34 – 0:28:40] Adam: I don’t know how I’ve avoided this because I’ve been on Reddit reading people crying about Game of Thrones nonstop.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:41] Erik: Everybody is so upset about it.
[0:28:41 – 0:28:42] Adam: What is wrong with people?
[0:28:42 – 0:28:46] Adam: Just enjoy the good parts and, you know, don’t take it so seriously.
[0:28:46 – 0:28:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:52] Adam: Hopefully he finishes the books, but I know a lot of people are like, he’s never going to finish the books.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:53] Adam: This is the ending we get.
[0:28:53 – 0:29:18] Adam: yeah how do you explain that i’m not gonna give any spoilers there’s no spoilers here but we’re yes that is like basically that’s what reddit is doing now lately i haven’t seen the boundary waters i saw one on there and it was like i’m not even gonna bring it up it was some a lot of the questions you see on boundary waters reddit are like kind of ridiculous what’s the worst what’s the worst dehydrated food is it mountain house is that the brand i’m thinking of
[0:29:18 – 0:29:20] Erik: Mountain House is pretty bad, yeah.
[0:29:20 – 0:29:22] Adam: Yeah, it was just like, where’s the best deal on Mountain House?
[0:29:22 – 0:29:24] Adam: That was like a question I saw the other day.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:28] Adam: Like, oh, God, there’s so many things wrong with just the premise of this question.
[0:29:28 – 0:29:31] Erik: There’s definitely better versions of dried food, too.
[0:29:32 – 0:29:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:32 – 0:29:34] Erik: Shout out Camp Chow.
[0:29:34 – 0:29:36] Erik: Shout out Cache Lake.
[0:29:36 – 0:29:37] Erik: Those are two local dehydrated food sources.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:58] Adam: There is some stand of dehydrated food at the show, given a pudding sample, like dehydrated pudding, and then anti-shutout to the old fellow who wandered over with a sample of pudding and then licked it like an old cat in front of us.
[0:29:58 – 0:29:59] Adam: Gross.
[0:30:00 – 0:30:01] Adam: Not cool.
[0:30:01 – 0:30:02] Adam: I don’t care.
[0:30:02 – 0:30:03] Adam: I don’t think he listens to the show.
[0:30:03 – 0:30:06] Adam: If he listens to the show, I’m sorry, man.
[0:30:06 – 0:30:06] Adam: That wasn’t cool.
[0:30:07 – 0:30:10] Adam: Yeah, it’s one of the worst sounds in nature right there.
[0:30:11 – 0:30:12] Adam: All right, sorry.
[0:30:12 – 0:30:14] Adam: Let’s get to the questions and answers.
[0:30:14 – 0:30:15] Erik: Questions.
[0:30:15 – 0:30:16] Adam: What was the question?
[0:30:16 – 0:30:23] Erik: Well, the question was kind of where we started last year, which was essentially, what are your plans for visiting the BWCA this year?
[0:30:23 – 0:30:25] Erik: Can we tilt the computer just a smidge?
[0:30:25 – 0:30:28] Erik: I think we can definitely get it a little tilted for you.
[0:30:28 – 0:30:30] Erik: And we’ll switch off like we always do.
[0:30:30 – 0:30:32] Erik: It’s been a long time since we’ve done this.
[0:30:32 – 0:30:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:30:35 – 0:30:35] Erik: I’ll start.
[0:30:36 – 0:30:40] Erik: So this is from Rono underscore clock.
[0:30:42 – 0:30:43] Erik: Six points.
[0:30:43 – 0:30:45] Erik: Going in order of points here.
[0:30:45 – 0:30:46] Erik: Always.
[0:30:46 – 0:30:48] Erik: Then this one’s coming up soon.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:53] Erik: Numbered Lakes, entry point 30 on 517.
[0:30:53 – 0:30:54] Erik: That’s just next week.
[0:30:55 – 0:30:57] Erik: Easy few days of base camping.
[0:30:57 – 0:31:01] Erik: Looking to have some adventurous day trips into the PMAs in the area.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:02] Erik: Very nice.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:06] Erik: For sure going down the powwow to the Rock of Ages.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:08] Erik: Big fan of the pod.
[0:31:08 – 0:31:12] Erik: You guys take me to the woods during my daily horrific urban commute.
[0:31:12 – 0:31:17] Adam: We do live in a dystopian nightmare, Romo Cluck.
[0:31:17 – 0:31:18] Erik: That’s awesome.
[0:31:18 – 0:31:23] Erik: That’s super timely with the powwow and the rock of ages.
[0:31:23 – 0:31:33] Erik: You’re going to go and try to find the Jason Rasmussen commemorative memorial trail marker so people don’t end up going.
[0:31:34 – 0:31:36] Adam: Don’t J-Rass this thing.
[0:31:36 – 0:31:36] Adam: Go left.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:37] Erik: Awesome.
[0:31:38 – 0:31:39] Erik: Easy few days of base camping.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:40] Erik: That’s always nice.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:43] Erik: Start the season off easy.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:44] Adam: It’s like in disc golf.
[0:31:44 – 0:31:47] Adam: You don’t want to come out and start ripping your 14 speed on May.
[0:31:48 – 0:31:49] Adam: Hold on.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:50] Adam: Play with the mid-ranges for a couple weeks.
[0:31:51 – 0:31:52] Erik: There’s nothing wrong with that.
[0:31:52 – 0:31:55] Adam: Get your arms, get your legs loose.
[0:31:55 – 0:31:56] Adam: Then do your big trips in the fall.
[0:31:57 – 0:31:57] Adam: I love it.
[0:31:57 – 0:31:58] Erik: Distracts.
[0:32:05 – 0:32:06] Adam: Five points.
[0:32:07 – 0:32:14] Adam: I just confirmed my first trip to the BWCA in mid-June, going in on SAG and hope to base camp on Esther for a week.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:16] Adam: Have you guys dealt with that area much?
[0:32:17 – 0:32:20] Adam: I heard Cherry is beautiful, but has a nasty portage.
[0:32:21 – 0:32:21] Adam: We can confirm.
[0:32:22 – 0:32:23] Adam: Yeah, we’ve been to Cherry.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:24] Adam: Everything in that statement, I think.
[0:32:24 – 0:32:25] Erik: Those are cool lakes.
[0:32:25 – 0:32:26] Adam: Cherry is beautiful.
[0:32:27 – 0:32:29] Adam: Let’s take a look up here at the map.
[0:32:29 – 0:32:30] Adam: Where’s our laser pointer?
[0:32:30 – 0:32:31] Erik: Yeah, there are a few.
[0:32:31 – 0:32:33] Erik: I think there’s two different ways into Cherry.
[0:32:35 – 0:32:40] Erik: And Esther and Hanson, very good lakes to set up for a base camp.
[0:32:40 – 0:32:42] Erik: Excellent campsites and fishing.
[0:32:42 – 0:32:47] Adam: Yeah, it’s not a bad paddle in there if you’re doing a tow, especially.
[0:32:47 – 0:32:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:50 – 0:32:51] Adam: Even then, it’s not bad.
[0:32:52 – 0:33:00] Erik: I guess there’s not really… You can come in from Hanson into like whatever is just south of Lunar there.
[0:33:01 – 0:33:03] Erik: Or you can come in from Amaber.
[0:33:03 – 0:33:05] Erik: Amaber.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:06] Erik: Kind of like Gogibik.
[0:33:07 – 0:33:08] Erik: How do you pronounce that one?
[0:33:08 – 0:33:08] Erik: Omiber?
[0:33:09 – 0:33:11] Erik: Multi-pronunciational.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:14] Erik: The campsites on Cherry are so-so.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:18] Erik: I remember when we went by there a couple years ago after we came down from our Lake of the Clouds.
[0:33:18 – 0:33:19] Erik: We got lost up in the
[0:33:19 – 0:33:21] Adam: Yeah, we were lost on Lake of the Clouds.
[0:33:21 – 0:33:22] Adam: That was the nasty portage I remembered.
[0:33:22 – 0:33:24] Erik: Yeah, out of Kijikiki.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:27] Erik: Beautiful lakes, though.
[0:33:27 – 0:33:35] Erik: Esther, there’s a really nice set of campsites on the island on Hanson.
[0:33:37 – 0:33:46] Erik: And, yeah, a day trip up into Cherry would be fun, but I don’t remember what was going on in terms of fishing.
[0:33:46 – 0:33:49] Adam: I would rather go and do a day trip into the pitfall.
[0:33:49 – 0:33:52] Adam: But, yeah, I mean… You’re right at the doorstep of the pitfall there.
[0:33:52 – 0:33:57] Erik: The pitfall PMA definitely seems like it had a little bit more in the way of, like, portages.
[0:33:57 – 0:33:58] Erik: Actual portages.
[0:33:58 – 0:34:00] Erik: Like, old portages and actually maybe some campsites.
[0:34:00 – 0:34:04] Adam: There’s definitely campsites marked there on Paddle Planner for sure.
[0:34:04 – 0:34:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:34:05 – 0:34:08] Adam: There’s old fissures that show campsites there.
[0:34:08 – 0:34:10] Adam: I think half of it’s burnt, though.
[0:34:10 – 0:34:11] Adam: Pitfall…
[0:34:11 – 0:34:13] Erik: Pitfall got a little bit of the burn from the…
[0:34:13 – 0:34:13] Adam: I can’t see it.
[0:34:13 – 0:34:14] Adam: I don’t know how you’re looking at this.
[0:34:14 – 0:34:16] Adam: I need, like, a flashlight or something.
[0:34:17 – 0:34:26] Erik: It’s definitely been a little burned, which kind of takes away from… Yeah, I think Fish Lake is totally burnt, and then…
[0:34:29 – 0:34:30] Erik: Yeah, it’s Nakawaka.
[0:34:31 – 0:34:36] Adam: That has a nice campsite on the north side is what it looked like, and that one actually still had some trees to it.
[0:34:36 – 0:34:37] Erik: Nakawaka.
[0:34:37 – 0:34:45] Adam: If I was going to a pitfall PMA or base camping at Esther, I would try to make a run up for a picnic lunch at Nakawaka.
[0:34:45 – 0:34:53] Erik: Well, the other thing to consider distracts is if you have a week on Esther, take a day trip down to the South Arm of Knife.
[0:34:54 – 0:34:57] Erik: We always talk about how SAC is just an amazing fishing lake.
[0:34:57 – 0:35:00] Adam: Esther is already pretty knife-ish.
[0:35:00 – 0:35:04] Adam: Yeah, like you’re already into that neighborhood proper at that point.
[0:35:05 – 0:35:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:35:05 – 0:35:07] Adam: So it’s already good in that respect.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:09] Adam: I was going to just tie that in, but you’re right.
[0:35:09 – 0:35:11] Adam: I mean, you have that kind of time.
[0:35:11 – 0:35:16] Erik: You could go down and you could get a grand slam on a day down there.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:24] Adam: You could do an Otter Track knife, South Arm of Knife back up, a little loop if you really had a low wind day and wanted to go for a cruise.
[0:35:25 – 0:35:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:35:25 – 0:35:26] Adam: Do some trolling.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:29] Erik: But Esther and Hanson, both really great lake trout lakes.
[0:35:29 – 0:35:30] Erik: Mid-June should still be good.
[0:35:31 – 0:35:35] Erik: Bring a big copper spoon, like a big three-quarter ounce.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:37] Adam: I somehow missed that they were going for a whole week.
[0:35:37 – 0:35:38] Adam: I’m super jealous now.
[0:35:38 – 0:35:39] Adam: Yeah, I know.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:48] Erik: So like a big three-quarter ounce Daredevil, one of those pockmarked copper spoons.
[0:35:49 – 0:35:49] Adam: Dimpled.
[0:35:49 – 0:35:50] Adam: Dimpled.
[0:35:50 – 0:35:51] Adam: It’s called dimpled.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:54] Erik: I’ve had zit-faced spoons.
[0:35:54 – 0:35:55] Erik: Bring one of those.
[0:35:56 – 0:35:58] Erik: Those I’ve had really good luck with.
[0:35:58 – 0:36:04] Erik: The bigger spoon, the better I find in those lakes for the lake trout.
[0:36:04 – 0:36:06] Erik: Got some really nice lake trouts.
[0:36:09 – 0:36:10] Erik: Really nice sized lake trout.
[0:36:10 – 0:36:12] Erik: We got something beeping at us here.
[0:36:12 – 0:36:16] Adam: The EVP meter is going as there’s someone here with us.
[0:36:17 – 0:36:18] Adam: Is there a presence?
[0:36:19 – 0:36:19] Erik: Yep.
[0:36:19 – 0:36:21] Adam: Do you need to pause and check the video?
[0:36:21 – 0:36:21] Adam: What happened?
[0:36:22 – 0:36:23] Adam: I’ll look at it.
[0:36:23 – 0:36:24] Adam: You just…
[0:36:24 – 0:36:25] Adam: I’ll keep rambling.
[0:36:25 – 0:36:26] Adam: Yeah, you read about…
[0:36:27 – 0:36:28] Adam: I’ll do back-to-backs here.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:30] Adam: Yeah, paddle faster.
[0:36:30 – 0:36:31] Adam: Paddle faster.
[0:36:32 – 0:36:32] Adam: Five points.
[0:36:34 – 0:36:42] Adam: No soft water season visit for me planned, but I’m super excited about coming up to Northern Tier next Christmas break for a week stay.
[0:36:43 – 0:36:43] Adam: Woof.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:45] Adam: A week around Christmas.
[0:36:48 – 0:36:49] Adam: That’s some good stuff.
[0:36:49 – 0:36:52] Adam: I don’t know what he’s doing over here.
[0:36:54 – 0:36:54] Adam: It’s going now.
[0:36:58 – 0:37:10] Adam: He doesn’t say if our friend Paddle Faster is going to be doing any fishing or what their mode of transport is.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:12] Adam: Yeah.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:20] Erik: Well, we might be finding out that the video situation here is a potential…
[0:37:22 – 0:37:23] Adam: It’s catastrophic failure.
[0:37:23 – 0:37:24] Erik: Potentially not happening.
[0:37:24 – 0:37:26] Erik: I think it’s super hot.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:27] Adam: Is it?
[0:37:27 – 0:37:31] Adam: Yeah, so I think it’s… Because this podcast is super hot right now.
[0:37:31 – 0:37:36] Erik: There’s too much warmth.
[0:37:36 – 0:37:37] Adam: Is it because it’s plugged in?
[0:37:37 – 0:37:38] Erik: Well, that’s…
[0:37:38 – 0:37:39] Erik: It shouldn’t be.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:41] Erik: I mean, it needs to be plugged in.
[0:37:41 – 0:37:42] Erik: We don’t need to…
[0:37:43 – 0:38:08] Erik: get into the details on why it’s not working but um if you’re disappointed in the fact that there isn’t video this week um just know that we’ll try to figure something out i don’t know i feel better about not doing my hair now all right uh well let’s address this one and then it looks like we we may have a second sponsor of the week to get to here oh really yeah
[0:38:09 – 0:38:10] Erik: Oh, yes.
[0:38:10 – 0:38:11] Adam: Oh, yes.
[0:38:11 – 0:38:12] Erik: Oh, yes.
[0:38:12 – 0:38:14] Adam: You got anything on Northern Tier?
[0:38:16 – 0:38:18] Erik: Well, Northern Tier is the Boy Scout base over on Moose.
[0:38:19 – 0:38:21] Adam: So they just let people stay there for Christmas?
[0:38:21 – 0:38:23] Erik: I don’t know what their story is over there.
[0:38:23 – 0:38:24] Erik: That’s where Jay Rass is from.
[0:38:25 – 0:38:27] Erik: Maybe Paddle Faster is Jason Rasmussen.
[0:38:27 – 0:38:28] Erik: Oh, dear.
[0:38:28 – 0:38:30] Erik: Send us a message, Paddle Faster.
[0:38:30 – 0:38:31] Erik: Are you Jason Rasmussen?
[0:38:32 – 0:38:34] Erik: And how is Georgia this time of year?
[0:38:35 – 0:38:40] Adam: Yeah, well, anyways, I don’t know what you’re going to do up there, but awesome time to be around early winter.
[0:38:40 – 0:38:41] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:38:41 – 0:38:44] Adam: Definitely go out and try and catch a walleye or something if there’s good ice.
[0:38:44 – 0:38:46] Adam: There should be plenty of good ice by Christmas.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:47] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Erik: For sure.
[0:38:50 – 0:38:53] Erik: Yeah, before we get to the next comment here, let’s get to…
[0:38:53 – 0:38:56] Erik: These were both from Father.
[0:38:57 – 0:39:03] Erik: This is another Belgian Abbey Monastery Ale.
[0:39:03 – 0:39:04] Erik: This is St…
[0:39:05 – 0:39:06] Adam: Santa Bernardus.
[0:39:06 – 0:39:08] Adam: Santa Bernardus.
[0:39:09 – 0:39:10] Erik: I’m going to punch a hole in your ceiling here.
[0:39:10 – 0:39:11] Erik: Are you ready?
[0:39:12 – 0:39:12] Adam: Yeah, go for it.
[0:39:19 – 0:39:20] Adam: Very nice.
[0:39:26 – 0:39:27] Adam: All right, I’ll read the next one while you pour.
[0:39:27 – 0:39:29] Adam: You’re doing three in a row.
[0:39:29 – 0:39:32] Adam: I’m going three in a row, and then you can have the next two.
[0:39:32 – 0:39:34] Adam: Okay.
[0:39:34 – 0:39:35] Adam: Deal.
[0:39:35 – 0:39:37] Adam: PV, 79, three points.
[0:39:39 – 0:39:41] Adam: My wife are in the planning stages.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:49] Adam: I’m going to go ahead and say my wife and I are in the planning stages for a seven-day trip in early September, but haven’t fully decided on the route.
[0:39:51 – 0:39:52] Adam: Seven days, September.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:52] Adam: Okay.
[0:39:53 – 0:40:02] Adam: Currently leaning towards putting around on Round Lake to Tuscarora, Little Sag, up through Knife to Sag, then making our way back down to Round via Segal.
[0:40:03 – 0:40:04] Adam: That sounds awesome.
[0:40:05 – 0:40:12] Adam: This general route seems to offer options for more or less paddling should we find ourselves ahead of or behind schedule.
[0:40:13 – 0:40:15] Adam: Can’t wait for September regardless of the route.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:18] Adam: Yeah, I’d just do that.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:19] Adam: I’m not going to argue with that route at all.
[0:40:20 – 0:40:22] Erik: No, I don’t think I could argue with that.
[0:40:22 – 0:40:24] Erik: That’s one of the nicest things about the…
[0:40:25 – 0:40:26] Adam: Seven days, too.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:29] Erik: Yeah, seven days is… A lot of flexibility there.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:32] Erik: But up in that area, there are tons of different options.
[0:40:32 – 0:40:43] Erik: You don’t get into a loop where it’s so A to B, where you have to get to a point where once you start, you have to finish it.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:48] Erik: That area, there are so many different… Every lake has two or three portages off of it.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:54] Erik: Um, and little sag is like a underappreciated lake.
[0:40:54 – 0:41:03] Erik: I think that’s like, we’ll finish talking about where some of the plans that we have, but one of them I know for sure is I’d like to get out to little sag.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:04] Erik: It’s been a long time.
[0:41:04 – 0:41:06] Erik: It’s been like five years since I’ve been out there.
[0:41:06 – 0:41:07] Adam: Can I tell you something?
[0:41:07 – 0:41:07] Erik: No.
[0:41:08 – 0:41:08] Adam: Okay.
[0:41:09 – 0:41:10] Adam: Yes, what would you like to say?
[0:41:11 – 0:41:12] Adam: I’ve never been to Little Sag.
[0:41:12 – 0:41:14] Erik: Oh, well, we have to go.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:17] Adam: Yeah, that’s why I was like, yeah, we definitely should go.
[0:41:17 – 0:41:22] Erik: Yeah, it’s kind of in between those two, like Frost Route, Frost River.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:27] Adam: Yeah, if we had one more day on the Frost trip, I think we probably would have scooted over there.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:27] Adam: Yeah.
[0:41:28 – 0:41:30] Adam: And then we were camped at our last site.
[0:41:30 – 0:41:32] Adam: There was a group of youth went by,
[0:41:33 – 0:41:53] Adam: loudly yelling about going to little sag i remember you telling we’re heading in you know the next morning and it was like go get them kids go get them get them yeah awesome anyway that sounds like a really good time i uh again super jealous that one that one sounds ideal
[0:41:54 – 0:42:01] Erik: So, I think I was gone when you ran into Dew042 at the show.
[0:42:01 – 0:42:02] Erik: Is that right?
[0:42:02 – 0:42:03] Adam: No, no.
[0:42:03 – 0:42:05] Adam: I don’t believe I met Dew042.
[0:42:05 – 0:42:06] Adam: We never met Dew?
[0:42:06 – 0:42:06] Adam: No.
[0:42:07 – 0:42:12] Erik: It was somebody else that I was gone and you said, oh, I met so-and-so.
[0:42:12 – 0:42:15] Erik: Anyway, this next comment is from Dew042.
[0:42:15 – 0:42:18] Erik: I’m planning on hitting the Sioux Hustler Trail sometime.
[0:42:19 – 0:42:21] Erik: Nice thing about hiking in the BWCA.
[0:42:21 – 0:42:23] Erik: No permit planning required.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:29] Erik: Well, there’s some permits, but it’s way easier than overnight camping on the water.
[0:42:30 – 0:42:36] Erik: Speaking of which, I’m still hearing rumblings of Recreation.gov still not having all the kinks out of their system.
[0:42:36 – 0:42:37] Adam: I heard that from a few people.
[0:42:37 – 0:42:40] Erik: Most recently calling people and making them rebook.
[0:42:40 – 0:42:41] Erik: Rumor is they overbooked the quotas.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:43] Erik: Yeah.
[0:42:45 – 0:42:46] Erik: Excuse me.
[0:42:46 – 0:42:47] Erik: I’m not going to read all the responses here.
[0:42:49 – 0:42:49] Erik: There’s a couple.
[0:42:51 – 0:42:52] Erik: Yeah, there’s a few.
[0:42:52 – 0:42:55] Erik: And, yeah, it’s a real, I don’t know.
[0:42:57 – 0:42:58] Erik: It’s a real.
[0:42:59 – 0:43:01] Adam: Is it a conundrum?
[0:43:01 – 0:43:02] Erik: Pain in the ass.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:06] Adam: That sounds worse than a conundrum.
[0:43:06 – 0:43:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:07 – 0:43:08] Adam: It’s worse than a conundrum.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:08] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:12] Adam: I haven’t had to deal with it yet, so I’m just kind of ignoring it.
[0:43:12 – 0:43:13] Erik: What was it?
[0:43:13 – 0:43:13] Erik: 42?
[0:43:13 – 0:43:14] Erik: We’re at 42.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:15] Erik: Mark it down.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:15] Erik: 42.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:16] Adam: Where’s my notebook?
[0:43:17 – 0:43:30] Adam: Yeah, a few people at the show had said something about some funniness going on still at the site, and I didn’t have anything to offer because I honestly haven’t tried to get a permit yet, and I don’t have people calling me every day asking about their permits.
[0:43:30 – 0:43:30] Adam: I do.
[0:43:30 – 0:43:31] Adam: So I’ll let you field this one.
[0:43:32 – 0:43:32] Erik: I do.
[0:43:33 – 0:43:45] Erik: I’m telling everybody to go and get their own permits on their own computers because the way that they’ve got that system set up for outfitters to get permits for people,
[0:43:46 – 0:44:12] Erik: um is so it’s like it’s only you can only do it from one computer and so well you can do it from multiple computers but it has to have this special credit card reader hooked up to it which at this point we it’s just basically our front desk computer so if somebody calls and there’s a bunch of people at the front desk it’s like okay so now i have to wait to get in there
[0:44:12 – 0:44:14] Erik: to even look at what’s available for permits.
[0:44:14 – 0:44:15] Adam: You can’t just do it on your laptop.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:17] Erik: No, I can’t.
[0:44:17 – 0:44:18] Erik: There’s no flexibility with it.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:25] Erik: And then, yes, I do know that there has been a ton of overbooking of permits.
[0:44:26 – 0:44:33] Erik: I know Clearwater, there’s multiple days that I’ve already seen where there are four permits per day.
[0:44:33 – 0:44:36] Erik: That’s a three-permit per day quota.
[0:44:36 – 0:44:36] Adam: So what’s going to happen?
[0:44:36 – 0:44:37] Adam: They’re just going to have to honor that?
[0:44:38 – 0:44:38] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:44:38 – 0:44:39] Erik: I have no idea.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:41] Erik: It’s their problem.
[0:44:42 – 0:44:44] Erik: I mean, they’re the ones that regulate it.
[0:44:45 – 0:44:49] Erik: So I don’t know what else to do besides just issue the permits if people have gotten them.
[0:44:49 – 0:44:50] Adam: I got a quick question.
[0:44:50 – 0:44:52] Adam: So what was wrong with the old system?
[0:44:52 – 0:44:52] Adam: Nothing.
[0:44:53 – 0:44:54] Adam: Oh, that’s nice.
[0:44:54 – 0:44:55] Erik: Nothing.
[0:44:55 – 0:44:58] Erik: The only thing that was wrong with the old system was that they were worried about…
[0:44:58 – 0:44:59] Adam: It always worked for me.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:01] Adam: They were worried about security.
[0:45:01 – 0:45:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:45:01 – 0:45:02] Erik: It’s a security thing.
[0:45:02 – 0:45:06] Erik: It’s a PCI thing, which is like a credit card safety acronym.
[0:45:06 – 0:45:08] Adam: Well, I can get that then, though.
[0:45:08 – 0:45:10] Adam: You got to protect your behinds there.
[0:45:10 – 0:45:11] Erik: Yeah, whatever.
[0:45:11 – 0:45:14] Erik: People’s credit card information is being bought and sold on a constant basis.
[0:45:15 – 0:45:21] Erik: Like the credit card companies are just essentially assuming that your information is going to be stolen at some point.
[0:45:22 – 0:45:24] Erik: It’s just built into the way we do business.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:31] Erik: I’m not saying like that they shouldn’t really care about it, but to go as far as they have.
[0:45:31 – 0:45:34] Adam: There’s accepting it will happen and deal with it when it happens.
[0:45:34 – 0:45:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:45:35 – 0:45:40] Erik: It’s like you basically took something that was working completely fine.
[0:45:40 – 0:46:02] Erik: yeah and i never had a problem with the old system once no and now that’s all there’s nothing but problems they took all the numbers away from the entry points so like when you’re going on there to look for them now it’s just the which is alphabetical uh i don’t know i think they do it random what which is like because they want to keep it fair for everybody
[0:46:02 – 0:46:04] Erik: That’s the same thing that they do with the outfitters.
[0:46:05 – 0:46:09] Erik: There’s nothing pragmatic about it.
[0:46:10 – 0:46:14] Erik: I didn’t think this was going to turn into another rehash of the new Bon Jovi’s permitting system.
[0:46:14 – 0:46:24] Erik: But whenever you go in to select the canoe outfitter where you’d like your permit to be issued from, they don’t take into account where your permit is.
[0:46:24 – 0:46:26] Erik: So they just randomize all of the outfitters.
[0:46:26 – 0:46:31] Erik: So you’ve got to scroll through because they want to keep it fine until you find…
[0:46:32 – 0:47:00] Adam: your outfitter so it’s like if you get a east bearskin permit bearskin outfitters is not going to be the first one proximity is no proximity plays no role oh because they want to they want to randomize it for fairness well that’s a stupid i’m looking to get a u-haul trailer for this weekend and yeah i literally pulled it up and they like knew my zip code and told me exactly where the nearest u-haul was before i even like asked it a question right easy peasy
[0:47:01 – 0:47:02] Erik: So, yeah, that’s about all I know.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:06] Erik: I don’t know what they’re planning on doing with that going forward.
[0:47:07 – 0:47:09] Erik: I guess you got to start somewhere, but you do.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:10] Erik: I mean.
[0:47:11 – 0:47:11] Erik: So it’s a conundrum.
[0:47:12 – 0:47:12] Erik: It’s a conundrum.
[0:47:13 – 0:47:16] Erik: It’s also more work for me to go back and loon bleep.
[0:47:16 – 0:47:18] Erik: But it’s the first loon bleep of the season.
[0:47:18 – 0:47:19] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:47:19 – 0:47:19] Adam: Good.
[0:47:19 – 0:47:20] Adam: I’m glad to hear that.
[0:47:20 – 0:47:21] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:21 – 0:47:22] Erik: I had to get that in there.
[0:47:22 – 0:47:22] Erik: So we got…
[0:47:22 – 0:47:24] Adam: So he’s going hiking on the Sioux Hustler.
[0:47:25 – 0:47:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:25 – 0:47:28] Adam: I don’t think you have to worry about the permits there, point being.
[0:47:28 – 0:47:29] Adam: No, you do.
[0:47:29 – 0:47:29] Erik: You probably get it.
[0:47:29 – 0:47:31] Erik: Overnight hiking permits are still required.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:31] Erik: Yeah, you still need one.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:32] Adam: I’m just saying.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:33] Adam: But you don’t have to worry about it.
[0:47:33 – 0:47:34] Adam: You don’t have to worry about that one being overbooked, at least.
[0:47:35 – 0:47:35] Adam: Probably.
[0:47:35 – 0:47:36] Erik: No, definitely not.
[0:47:37 – 0:47:37] Erik: Okay.
[0:47:37 – 0:47:44] Erik: Aldi won Snowbank to Thomas over Memorial Day, looking forward to getting the paddle in the water.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:46] Erik: Yeah, there is the feeling.
[0:47:47 – 0:47:58] Erik: There is like a textile, like the softness and the pressure of like putting water against the wooden paddle with your hands on it.
[0:47:58 – 0:48:01] Erik: That’s not something that you feel for like half of a year.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:03] Adam: It’s great.
[0:48:03 – 0:48:04] Adam: The cooled waters.
[0:48:04 – 0:48:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:48:05 – 0:48:10] Erik: Yeah, and Snowbank to Thomas, you’re going to run into some big lake trout, I bet.
[0:48:10 – 0:48:11] Adam: Uh-huh.
[0:48:11 – 0:48:12] Adam: Very nice.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:12] Adam: Yeah.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:15] Erik: Am I doing one more here?
[0:48:16 – 0:48:17] Adam: Yeah, I think that’s fair.
[0:48:17 – 0:48:19] Erik: One more and then we go back and forth?
[0:48:19 – 0:48:19] Adam: Yeah, we’ll try.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:20] Erik: All right.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:22] Erik: Min, for you.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:27] Erik: I’m planning a solo in June through 51 missing link.
[0:48:28 – 0:48:33] Erik: We have reservations at Sawbill Lake Campground in July and a cabin on Round Lake in August for the family.
[0:48:34 – 0:48:34] Erik: Very nice.
[0:48:34 – 0:48:35] Erik: Missing link.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:37] Erik: Underappreciated entry point.
[0:48:37 – 0:48:40] Erik: Kind of one of those ones that’s almost always available, honestly.
[0:48:40 – 0:48:42] Adam: Yeah, why is that?
[0:48:42 – 0:48:46] Erik: I don’t know why.
[0:48:46 – 0:48:48] Erik: You can go two ways off of round off of the Gunflint.
[0:48:48 – 0:48:51] Erik: You got Missing Link and you got the Brant.
[0:48:52 – 0:48:55] Erik: And they’re both like kind of always available.
[0:48:55 – 0:48:57] Adam: Yeah, that’s a good place to go.
[0:48:57 – 0:48:58] Erik: It’s a great place to go.
[0:48:58 – 0:49:00] Erik: You can get into just about anything from there.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:02] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:05] Adam: Are people just avoiding the long portage into Tuscarora or what?
[0:49:06 – 0:49:07] Erik: Maybe it’s either that.
[0:49:07 – 0:49:13] Erik: It’s like so there’s a super long portage into Tuscarora or then like the brand entry point is like a bunch of minis.
[0:49:14 – 0:49:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:14 – 0:49:14] Erik: Rapid fire.
[0:49:14 – 0:49:17] Erik: Before you even get to a lake that has a campsite on it.
[0:49:17 – 0:49:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:21] Adam: You’re spending more time mucking around.
[0:49:21 – 0:49:23] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:24 – 0:49:26] Adam: We’re at Mike Modesto.
[0:49:27 – 0:49:28] Adam: Two points.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:29] Adam: Hi, guys.
[0:49:30 – 0:49:31] Adam: Glad to have found your podcast.
[0:49:32 – 0:49:35] Adam: Heading up to the lock for the third time in three years.
[0:49:36 – 0:49:42] Adam: Going with a different buddy this year than the last two, but still going to meet up and have a fish fry with original cohort and his girlfriend.
[0:49:42 – 0:49:44] Adam: Hopefully at a great site in Tiger Bay.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:48] Adam: If timing works, another friend of his buddy will be up there too.
[0:49:49 – 0:49:55] Adam: Heading out of Ely, renting a lightweight canoe, which will be the first on the canoe.
[0:49:56 – 0:49:58] Adam: Only used in Old Town before.
[0:49:58 – 0:49:59] Adam: Did I read that wrong?
[0:49:59 – 0:50:01] Adam: Or is it written wrong?
[0:50:01 – 0:50:01] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:50:02 – 0:50:22] Adam: anyways i get it we’ll blame it on you yeah i sorry i messed up he’s so they’re getting a nice lightweight canoe instead of the old town yeah good choice uh but going to the lack on a shuttle from crane lake for the last two years but paddling up the moose river into the need of moose agnes and up this year check out last year’s vid hey oh we got a youtube link
[0:50:22 – 0:50:23] Erik: We do have a YouTube link.
[0:50:23 – 0:50:24] Erik: We’ll maybe check that out later.
[0:50:25 – 0:50:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:25 – 0:50:26] Adam: That’s awesome.
[0:50:26 – 0:50:26] Adam: The Lack.
[0:50:27 – 0:50:28] Adam: The Lack.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:28] Adam: I like that.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:29] Adam: Just The Lack.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:30] Erik: The Lack.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:30] Erik: Yes.
[0:50:31 – 0:50:32] Erik: We know which Lack.
[0:50:32 – 0:50:32] Erik: We know.
[0:50:32 – 0:50:34] Erik: LLC Lack La Croix.
[0:50:35 – 0:50:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:36 – 0:50:38] Adam: I’d love to do the Nina Moose sometime.
[0:50:38 – 0:50:39] Adam: That one’s another one I hear a lot about.
[0:50:39 – 0:50:43] Erik: Yeah, this is a great Reddit username, Shoveling Water.
[0:50:43 – 0:50:44] Erik: I like that.
[0:50:45 – 0:50:48] Erik: Snowbank to Imon early June will be my first trip of the season.
[0:50:49 – 0:50:51] Erik: Hoping for good weather and good fishing.
[0:50:51 – 0:50:58] Erik: It will be my girlfriend’s first time ever in the BWCA, so I’m looking forward to watching her experience for the park for the first time.
[0:50:59 – 0:50:59] Erik: Nice.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:08] Erik: That’s like anything, living vicariously through somebody else, whether it’s a movie, whether it’s music.
[0:51:08 – 0:51:17] Erik: But the intensity of the boundary waters, I mean, I would say generally it’s a good thing.
[0:51:17 – 0:51:18] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:18 – 0:51:20] Erik: Maybe end up in a situation where…
[0:51:21 – 0:51:23] Adam: It’s got to be the calming presence.
[0:51:23 – 0:51:26] Erik: Yeah, they don’t have as good of a time as you thought they did.
[0:51:26 – 0:51:31] Erik: I’m not suggesting that, but that’s always kind of the worst case scenario for me.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:34] Adam: It’s like anybody or anything trying to introduce them.
[0:51:34 – 0:51:36] Adam: You want to make sure you have a good time for conformers.
[0:51:36 – 0:51:37] Erik: Have you seen this movie?
[0:51:37 – 0:51:38] Erik: I really like it.
[0:51:38 – 0:51:39] Erik: Eh, it was okay.
[0:51:39 – 0:51:40] Erik: I didn’t care for it.
[0:51:41 – 0:51:41] Erik: Okay, well, that’s fine.
[0:51:42 – 0:51:44] Erik: But it’s like, it’s even harder if it’s like…
[0:51:44 – 0:51:45] Erik: Okay, we can’t be friends then.
[0:51:45 – 0:51:48] Erik: Yeah, like… Hey, here’s this awesome place that I’d really love.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:51] Erik: You want to come up and see it with me for like three days?
[0:51:51 – 0:51:51] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:51:52 – 0:51:53] Erik: Yeah, it was all right.
[0:51:54 – 0:51:56] Erik: I don’t really want to go back to be like, oh.
[0:51:56 – 0:51:57] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:51:57 – 0:52:01] Adam: Paddling together is really an important part of everything, right?
[0:52:01 – 0:52:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:02] Adam: But good luck.
[0:52:02 – 0:52:03] Erik: Nevertheless, you’ll be fine.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Erik: You’re fine, yeah.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:09] Erik: I mean, making mountains out of molehills there for you.
[0:52:09 – 0:52:12] Adam: Yeah, yeah.
[0:52:12 – 0:52:13] Adam: All right.
[0:52:13 – 0:52:15] Adam: Does that say what I think it says?
[0:52:15 – 0:52:16] Erik: I think so.
[0:52:17 – 0:52:20] Adam: Fat guy, pod oppo, pod coppo.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:23] Erik: Podocalypse?
[0:52:24 – 0:52:28] Adam: I think it’s like apocalypse with pod.
[0:52:28 – 0:52:30] Erik: Yeah, apocalypse except with pod.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:32] Adam: Yeah, I would agree.
[0:52:32 – 0:52:33] Adam: I can’t say it.
[0:52:34 – 0:52:34] Erik: I can’t either.
[0:52:35 – 0:52:39] Adam: I can just by giving another extra point.
[0:52:40 – 0:52:40] Adam: I can’t say the name.
[0:52:41 – 0:52:41] Adam: Howdy.
[0:52:42 – 0:52:43] Adam: New listener here.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:47] Adam: I’m heading out in mid-May and we’ll be stopping at the Isle of Pines during our trip.
[0:52:47 – 0:52:51] Adam: Do you have any recommendations of places to stop or see while out there?
[0:52:51 – 0:52:55] Adam: I’m really excited to see the root beer ladies home and didn’t want to miss anything visiting the island.
[0:52:56 – 0:52:57] Adam: Thanks a bunch for your podcast.
[0:52:58 – 0:52:59] Adam: And sorry for butchering your name.
[0:53:02 – 0:53:02] Adam: I get it.
[0:53:02 – 0:53:04] Adam: I just can’t say it for some reason.
[0:53:04 – 0:53:05] Erik: Yeah, Podocalips?
[0:53:06 – 0:53:07] Adam: That’s as close as we’ve gotten.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:08] Adam: We’re going to go with that one.
[0:53:08 – 0:53:12] Erik: I don’t know if there’s anything out on Isle of Pines to really see anymore.
[0:53:12 – 0:53:15] Erik: I mean, if you’re interested in the root beer, lady, there’s the museum in Ely.
[0:53:16 – 0:53:18] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[0:53:18 – 0:53:24] Erik: One of the more forgotten grandfathered in residents of the Bon Jovi was…
[0:53:25 – 0:53:39] Erik: benny ambrose so depending on how far up knife you’re going uh you could stop at dorothy’s island and there is a plaque on the canadian side of benny otter track yeah right across from where he lived um
[0:53:42 – 0:54:09] Erik: kind of mid otter track yeah a little on the west side yeah i don’t think i don’t think either besides the plaque for benny which it’s in canada and looks like super homemade i don’t know if there’s anything on either of their old homesteads that you would really be able to like stop and see outside of like maybe an old footing or something um you can maybe stop and you know like read a poem to their to them yeah i mean see if you can contact them i don’t know
[0:54:09 – 0:54:24] Erik: I think stopping at her museum where they’ve extracted her old cabin in Ely would be, to do that on the way out, would be a really cool combination of experiences where you stop there and then you go out and actually see the island.
[0:54:25 – 0:54:28] Adam: Yeah, I like the idea of doing it on the way out after you’ve been out there.
[0:54:28 – 0:54:29] Erik: We’re on the way out.
[0:54:29 – 0:54:31] Erik: Either way, I think you could take… Whatever works best timing-wise.
[0:54:32 – 0:54:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:54:33 – 0:54:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:54:33 – 0:54:38] Erik: So I don’t know if I have much more to say on the rip-ear lady on her island.
[0:54:38 – 0:54:38] Erik: I’ve stopped there.
[0:54:39 – 0:54:40] Erik: I’ve never really found anything.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:40] Adam: You have?
[0:54:41 – 0:54:42] Adam: I have not stopped there either.
[0:54:42 – 0:54:43] Erik: Yeah, I’ve been there multiple times.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:43] Erik: It’s great.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:47] Erik: I mean, to know, but there’s nothing like… Yeah, it was pretty cool.
[0:54:47 – 0:54:48] Erik: There’s nothing to see, really.
[0:54:49 – 0:54:49] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:50] Erik: Um…
[0:54:52 – 0:54:53] Erik: Do you want to read this one?
[0:54:54 – 0:54:55] Erik: He stopped by the show.
[0:54:56 – 0:54:59] Erik: I think he got a good chuckle about how you pronounced the…
[0:55:00 – 0:55:04] Adam: I thought this was the guy you were earlier talking about, Link, that stopped by, but you were there.
[0:55:04 – 0:55:05] Adam: Jarlik.
[0:55:05 – 0:55:06] Erik: No, yeah.
[0:55:06 – 0:55:07] Adam: What is it?
[0:55:07 – 0:55:08] Adam: It’s not Jarlik.
[0:55:09 – 0:55:11] Erik: I would say it’s Jarlik.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:11] Erik: Jarlik.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:16] Erik: If you were just pronouncing it from front to back based on… Jarlik.
[0:55:16 – 0:55:16] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:16 – 0:55:17] Adam: One point.
[0:55:17 – 0:55:18] Adam: Yes.
[0:55:18 – 0:55:28] Adam: Mudro to Crooked in June, Ram to Little Trout with my three and five-year-old daughters in July, and Cross Bay to Frost in August.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:30] Adam: Excited for season two.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:30] Adam: Woo!
[0:55:31 – 0:55:31] Erik: Very nice.
[0:55:31 – 0:55:32] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:32 – 0:55:33] Erik: Those are three trips.
[0:55:33 – 0:55:34] Erik: Three.
[0:55:34 – 0:55:35] Adam: He’s got three planned already.
[0:55:35 – 0:55:35] Erik: Awesome.
[0:55:36 – 0:55:55] Erik: Yeah, that ram to Little Trout, that’s a, I mean, it’s not easy, but once you get into Little Trout, it’s a great, it feels super secluded and quiet just because there’s only one entry permit per day on ram.
[0:55:55 – 0:55:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:55 – 0:55:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:56 – 0:56:01] Adam: I still regret not camping on Little Trout on that one trip I did that route.
[0:56:01 – 0:56:07] Adam: We made it to Little Trout pretty early and decided to push on, and I still regret that we didn’t just stay.
[0:56:07 – 0:56:08] Adam: We had the island site.
[0:56:09 – 0:56:12] Adam: And we were sitting there eating lunch, and we’re like, we could just set up and hang out and fish.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:14] Adam: And it’s like, no, let’s just push on.
[0:56:15 – 0:56:17] Adam: Ended up on the worst site on Vista.
[0:56:17 – 0:56:20] Adam: So I hope you get that island site on Little Trout.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:22] Erik: Awesome.
[0:56:23 – 0:56:30] Erik: There’s like one really nice site on Vista, and then all the other ones are like pretty so-so slash bad.
[0:56:31 – 0:56:36] Adam: Yeah, so yeah, there’s a couple tricky ones getting down the hill into Little Trout.
[0:56:37 – 0:56:41] Adam: It’s a lot of up and down, I felt like, but they’re all pretty short.
[0:56:41 – 0:56:42] Adam: So take your time.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:44] Adam: You’re going to have a lot of fun.
[0:56:45 – 0:56:46] Erik: Hopalicious.
[0:56:46 – 0:56:48] Erik: Haven’t heard from Hopalicious in a while.
[0:56:49 – 0:56:50] Erik: Thanks for responding.
[0:56:51 – 0:56:53] Erik: Late June fishing trip to Ensign or Basswood.
[0:56:54 – 0:56:55] Erik: Stick to Basswood.
[0:56:56 – 0:56:59] Erik: If it was me, I will never camp on Ensign ever again.
[0:56:59 – 0:57:00] Adam: Yeah, we all know how Eric feels about Ensign.
[0:57:01 – 0:57:01] Erik: I hate that lake.
[0:57:01 – 0:57:03] Erik: There’s no Bonjour Waters lakes that I hate.
[0:57:04 – 0:57:04] Erik: More than Ensign.
[0:57:04 – 0:57:05] Erik: More than Ensign.
[0:57:05 – 0:57:07] Erik: And I don’t hate any other ones.
[0:57:07 – 0:57:07] Erik: The scorn.
[0:57:07 – 0:57:09] Erik: It’s literally the one I hate.
[0:57:09 – 0:57:14] Erik: I got attacked by a dirty, dirty family of bears.
[0:57:14 – 0:57:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:17] Erik: And there’s too many cab sites.
[0:57:17 – 0:57:18] Erik: It’s too busy.
[0:57:18 – 0:57:19] Erik: It’s junky.
[0:57:19 – 0:57:20] Erik: It’s blown down.
[0:57:20 – 0:57:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:57:20 – 0:57:22] Erik: Do you want my honest opinion on it?
[0:57:23 – 0:57:24] Erik: Loon bleep.
[0:57:24 – 0:57:30] Adam: They need to get the people at redesignedrecreation.gov to redesign Ensign.
[0:57:30 – 0:57:34] Erik: Yeah, they need to redesign Ensign.
[0:57:34 – 0:57:35] Adam: It’s not possible.
[0:57:35 – 0:57:40] Erik: No, I think with that entry, it’s like a Moose Lake entry permit that you would need to get to Ensign.
[0:57:40 – 0:57:41] Erik: Yeah.
[0:57:43 – 0:57:48] Erik: We’ll do a whole episode on Ensign like mid-season when it really blow off some steam.
[0:57:50 – 0:57:52] Adam: Like a first week of August, we should do Ensign.
[0:57:52 – 0:57:56] Erik: It’ll just be me just ranting and raving, pounding on the wall.
[0:57:56 – 0:58:00] Adam: I think we may have to return to Ensign so you can get some closure.
[0:58:00 – 0:58:01] Erik: Yeah, we’ll go out there.
[0:58:01 – 0:58:02] Erik: That would be fun.
[0:58:02 – 0:58:03] Erik: In August.
[0:58:03 – 0:58:05] Erik: Go out with the field recorder to the site that I went.
[0:58:06 – 0:58:07] Erik: Relive the whole scenario.
[0:58:07 – 0:58:09] Adam: Yeah, we can recreate that scenario.
[0:58:09 – 0:58:14] Adam: Then we can probably get in like 80 to 100 interviews with other people that are camped out there in August.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:16] Erik: At least, yeah.
[0:58:16 – 0:58:17] Erik: It’s like a water parade.
[0:58:17 – 0:58:18] Erik: That looks like a bear pack.
[0:58:19 – 0:58:21] Adam: Max Cavan, one point.
[0:58:21 – 0:58:31] Adam: Been going to my grandpa’s cabin on Gunflint Lake my whole life, but so far I’ve only done some camping on a few of the U.S. forest sites on the lake and some simple day trips into the park.
[0:58:32 – 0:58:39] Adam: So me and a good friend are doing our first real trip at the end of May, going into Missing Link, be around, and have a few potential routes planned.
[0:58:40 – 0:58:43] Adam: But ideally, we would love to make it to the island campsite on Snipe.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:46] Adam: I think it was mentioned on episode 25.
[0:58:47 – 0:58:48] Adam: You are correct.
[0:58:50 – 0:58:53] Adam: Side note, I seriously can’t tell you guys how much joy this show brings me.
[0:58:54 – 0:58:55] Adam: Thank you.
[0:58:56 – 0:58:59] Adam: Anytime a new episode drops, it’s an instant play.
[0:58:59 – 0:59:00] Adam: Anything else gets paused.
[0:59:00 – 0:59:01] Adam: Keep up the good work.
[0:59:01 – 0:59:01] Adam: Wow.
[0:59:02 – 0:59:04] Adam: I should have read that ahead and skipped it.
[0:59:04 – 0:59:06] Adam: I self-bragged.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:09] Adam: But thank you for the compliment.
[0:59:10 – 0:59:14] Erik: I’m assuming your name is Max, but let’s just say we’ll use your name Max Cavan.
[0:59:14 – 0:59:15] Erik: Max Cavan.
[0:59:16 – 0:59:40] Adam: that is a great compliment again very fine we have hit on this multiple times you should just title this episode thank you thanks yeah and uh just make sure if you’re gonna be um planning on the island on snipe there’s only one thing you gotta remember max coven it’s the pizza biters yeah oh don’t even don’t even think about going out there without a bag of pizza biters for night one
[0:59:40 – 0:59:45] Erik: We ran into somebody at the show who was like, this guy turned me on to pizza biters.
[0:59:45 – 0:59:47] Adam: That’s the only thing we’re known for.
[0:59:47 – 0:59:49] Adam: Or just myself in particular.
[0:59:49 – 0:59:50] Erik: Yeah.
[0:59:50 – 0:59:56] Adam: If that’s what we get known for is getting people to bring pizza biters, then I think our job is done here.
[0:59:56 – 0:59:58] Adam: So anyways, yeah.
[0:59:59 – 1:00:07] Adam: That’s a really good campsite, but you’re going to definitely want a doodle pad and make sure you got at least a jumbo bag of pizza biters.
[1:00:07 – 1:00:14] Erik: Yeah, if you have the grandpa’s cabin on Gunflint Lake, you know, stop in Clearwater and say hi.
[1:00:14 – 1:00:18] Erik: You’ll for sure get to see, well, not for sure, but most likely you’ll get to see me.
[1:00:20 – 1:00:25] Erik: Or you can lurk around the back alleys of Grand Moraine and maybe find Adam.
[1:00:26 – 1:00:28] Adam: I’m always there somewhere.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:31] Erik: Getting down there in terms of comments.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:35] Erik: I think this might be the most commented on just straight up.
[1:00:35 – 1:00:36] Adam: It’s been live for a while now.
[1:00:36 – 1:00:37] Erik: It’s been almost two weeks.
[1:00:38 – 1:00:39] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:40 – 1:00:43] Erik: Somniferosh dash dash.
[1:00:45 – 1:00:47] Erik: That’s – I’m going to call that good.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:48] Adam: You nailed it, yeah.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:49] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:57] Erik: The closest thing this year to a BWCA trip is a backpack camping trip at Bearhead Lake State Park where we will be portaging our canoe to the lake we’re staying on.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:00] Erik: That’s kind of cool though.
[1:01:00 – 1:01:00] Erik: I think –
[1:01:02 – 1:01:07] Erik: I didn’t realize that there were campsites out on the lake like that.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:09] Erik: I know there was like a campground.
[1:01:09 – 1:01:14] Adam: There’s a lot of little mini opportunities to portage and camp, like if you can’t get all the way to the Boundary Waters.
[1:01:14 – 1:01:25] Adam: I know when I was living in Madison, I was always seeking out opportunities for, you know, it’s like a, you know, it’s just a mini Boundary Waters, you know.
[1:01:26 – 1:01:28] Adam: Sometimes that’s the best you can get to, and that’s pretty good.
[1:01:29 – 1:01:30] Erik: Like the Timber Freer?
[1:01:32 – 1:01:34] Adam: The home of the pizza biters.
[1:01:35 – 1:01:35] Adam: Yeah.
[1:01:35 – 1:01:37] Adam: That’s where the pizza biters thing all began.
[1:01:38 – 1:01:41] Adam: I’m thinking of stuff like Sylvania and upper UP.
[1:01:41 – 1:01:43] Erik: Oh, yeah, Porcupine Mountain.
[1:01:43 – 1:01:45] Adam: Yeah, or just doing, like, the Namakagan River.
[1:01:45 – 1:01:49] Adam: I mean, there’s not really portaging there unless you get around one of the dams.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:50] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:51] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[1:01:52 – 1:02:00] Adam: There’s a little chain of lakes, like, out north of Minocqua that you can do some portaging on and, like, technically backcountry camping.
[1:02:00 – 1:02:05] Adam: I mean, none of it’s, you know, very big compared to the Boundary Waters.
[1:02:05 – 1:02:06] Adam: It’s nothing but…
[1:02:07 – 1:02:10] Adam: it still gives you the experience and a lot of those places are pretty untouched.
[1:02:10 – 1:02:19] Erik: So I’ve never done bear Island, but it’s just like West of Ely and like pretty close to where we used to live off the grid, um, over when I used to run dogs.
[1:02:20 – 1:02:26] Erik: Um, and I, you can kind of see it, uh, just South and West of Ely bear head, bear head.
[1:02:26 – 1:02:27] Adam: There it is.
[1:02:28 – 1:02:29] Erik: There’s a nice fire tower over there.
[1:02:30 – 1:02:35] Erik: One of the few remaining that isn’t on in a reservation kind of right between tower and
[1:02:36 – 1:02:40] Erik: and Ely that you can actually walk up to the top of.
[1:02:40 – 1:02:42] Erik: I love me some fire towers.
[1:02:43 – 1:02:47] Erik: Yeah, good stuff.
[1:02:48 – 1:02:50] Erik: I like the name of this user.
[1:02:50 – 1:02:52] Erik: If you want to read that one, I’ll finish up with the last one here.
[1:02:53 – 1:02:53] Adam: Chef Cycle?
[1:02:54 – 1:02:54] Adam: Chef Cycle.
[1:02:55 – 1:02:55] Adam: One point.
[1:02:57 – 1:02:59] Erik: Three hours ago, he barely got it in.
[1:02:59 – 1:03:00] Adam: What?
[1:03:00 – 1:03:00] Erik: Is that real?
[1:03:00 – 1:03:02] Erik: We got a couple there.
[1:03:02 – 1:03:03] Adam: And an hour ago.
[1:03:03 – 1:03:03] Adam: Man.
[1:03:03 – 1:03:05] Adam: So these could add a lot more points than they got in earlier.
[1:03:06 – 1:03:10] Adam: So we’re not going to judge them on their points here so much as that they got in.
[1:03:10 – 1:03:10] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:11 – 1:03:15] Adam: One trip in June with a girlfriend and two-year-old and one in September with my brother.
[1:03:16 – 1:03:20] Adam: It’ll be everybody else’s first time, so just nice and easy trips.
[1:03:21 – 1:03:22] Adam: Hopefully I can get one more trip in.
[1:03:23 – 1:03:23] Adam: That’s a real hard one.
[1:03:24 – 1:03:24] Adam: Nice.
[1:03:24 – 1:03:26] Adam: That’s a really good goal right there.
[1:03:26 – 1:03:31] Adam: Introduce a few more new people to the park and then one for yourself.
[1:03:31 – 1:03:31] Erik: Yep.
[1:03:32 – 1:03:33] Adam: So nice job.
[1:03:34 – 1:03:36] Adam: I hope you have safe travels.
[1:03:36 – 1:03:43] Adam: Always fun to get out with the special lady, the kid, and especially brother.
[1:03:43 – 1:03:45] Adam: I always enjoy my trips when brother comes up.
[1:03:45 – 1:03:46] Erik: Tailwinds.
[1:03:46 – 1:03:48] Erik: Yeah, tailwinds for days.
[1:03:48 – 1:03:53] Erik: Valak232 looking for an easy trip into Lake 2 or 3 for some fishing.
[1:03:53 – 1:03:56] Erik: This is my first trip into the park in four years.
[1:03:56 – 1:03:57] Adam: He’s back.
[1:03:57 – 1:03:59] Adam: Our friend Valak is back.
[1:03:59 – 1:04:00] Adam: Welcome back, Valak.
[1:04:01 – 1:04:02] Erik: We’ve heard from Valak before.
[1:04:03 – 1:04:03] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:04:04 – 1:04:06] Adam: He or she is a friend of the show.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:06] Adam: Yes.
[1:04:07 – 1:04:10] Adam: If they’ve commented once, this was one hour ago.
[1:04:11 – 1:04:12] Erik: One hour ago.
[1:04:12 – 1:04:16] Erik: Valak, you just squozed in just under the wire.
[1:04:18 – 1:04:18] Adam: That’s everybody.
[1:04:18 – 1:04:21] Adam: We’re going to get some clues into when our recording schedules are.
[1:04:22 – 1:04:23] Erik: We didn’t hear from Rojo Ryder.
[1:04:23 – 1:04:24] Adam: That’s right.
[1:04:25 – 1:04:26] Adam: We heard from Rojo.
[1:04:27 – 1:04:29] Erik: Yeah, I think they’re going up into Quetico.
[1:04:30 – 1:04:30] Erik: We talked to them.
[1:04:30 – 1:04:34] Erik: They’re going up into Old Connipy.
[1:04:35 – 1:04:38] Erik: That Old Connipy.
[1:04:38 – 1:04:39] Adam: Personal check-in.
[1:04:39 – 1:04:41] Adam: He didn’t need no Reddit to let us know.
[1:04:42 – 1:04:45] Adam: Rojo stopped in and also super jealous of that trip.
[1:04:45 – 1:04:47] Erik: They’re going up into Connipy in mid-June.
[1:04:47 – 1:04:48] Erik: They’re going to like…
[1:04:49 – 1:04:49] Erik: Oh man.
[1:04:49 – 1:04:53] Erik: They’re going to be like, you could like, don’t even have to bring a sleeping bag.
[1:04:53 – 1:04:57] Erik: You could just like lay in a bed of walleye that whole trip.
[1:04:57 – 1:04:58] Erik: The fishing is going to be insane.
[1:04:58 – 1:05:05] Adam: You just sing that song you sang and then the walleye will come right up to your camp and you just lay on them like a pillow of walleye.
[1:05:05 – 1:05:12] Erik: You sing old man river just with con nippy replaced.
[1:05:12 – 1:05:12] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:12 – 1:05:12] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:13 – 1:05:16] Erik: And they’ll just like jump into the frying pan and skin themselves on the way.
[1:05:16 – 1:05:39] Erik: that’s a jam that’s a real jam yeah fall chain man falls chain just throughout kenny the campsite on kenny oh yeah makes yeah it’s definitely got me i mean obviously that’s quite a go but you know it’s the same realm what we’re talking about here got me very jealous but
[1:05:41 – 1:05:44] Erik: So, I guess we can kind of… Have we got so far ahead?
[1:05:45 – 1:05:46] Erik: Ahead of what?
[1:05:48 – 1:05:49] Adam: Beer ahead.
[1:05:49 – 1:05:50] Erik: Beer ahead.
[1:05:50 – 1:05:56] Erik: Well, we’ve been talking about how there’s maybe like some video happening.
[1:05:57 – 1:06:07] Erik: Until we get some of the kinks worked out, the video that you’re going to see this week is maybe going to be a little bit, a little jangly until we can figure out why this thing.
[1:06:07 – 1:06:09] Adam: Are you going to post it though anyways?
[1:06:09 – 1:06:09] Erik: I’ll throw it up.
[1:06:09 – 1:06:10] Erik: Why not?
[1:06:10 – 1:06:11] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:06:11 – 1:06:11] Erik: Yeah.
[1:06:12 – 1:06:14] Erik: Like I said, everything else we’ve done.
[1:06:15 – 1:06:16] Erik: Go back and listen to episode two.
[1:06:16 – 1:06:18] Erik: Do you want to listen to episode two?
[1:06:19 – 1:06:21] Adam: I’m never listening to any single digit episodes.
[1:06:21 – 1:06:21] Adam: That’s for sure.
[1:06:21 – 1:06:24] Erik: We need to do Clearwater Lake again.
[1:06:24 – 1:06:26] Adam: Yeah, we need to redo that one for justice.
[1:06:27 – 1:06:28] Adam: Maybe in season three.
[1:06:28 – 1:06:30] Adam: Come back and hit it when we know what we’re doing.
[1:06:30 – 1:06:31] Adam: That was embarrassing.
[1:06:31 – 1:06:32] Adam: We should have started with some crap lakes.
[1:06:33 – 1:06:34] Erik: No, I don’t know.
[1:06:34 – 1:06:36] Erik: Like, we had to, I mean, it’s always a balance.
[1:06:36 – 1:06:42] Erik: You have to start with what you know, but we also were, we didn’t know anything about, like, how it was going to sound.
[1:06:43 – 1:06:47] Erik: Like, your refrigerator kicks on, like, ten times during that episode.
[1:06:47 – 1:06:48] Erik: And it’s so slow.
[1:06:48 – 1:06:52] Erik: Like, it’s just, like, I can’t even imagine, like, there’s no energy.
[1:06:52 – 1:06:57] Erik: I mean, I don’t even know how people were, like, listening to that and being like, I’m going to keep listening to this.
[1:06:59 – 1:07:00] Adam: I sense great potential.
[1:07:00 – 1:07:00] Erik: Yeah.
[1:07:01 – 1:07:02] Erik: I mean, I don’t know.
[1:07:02 – 1:07:03] Adam: I’m not saying that.
[1:07:03 – 1:07:06] Adam: See, I’ve never gone back to listen to any of the single digit ones.
[1:07:06 – 1:07:06] Adam: I won’t do it.
[1:07:07 – 1:07:13] Erik: I’m not saying what we’re doing now is like 10 times better, but it’s definitely better than those first few.
[1:07:14 – 1:07:15] Adam: Practice makes perfect.
[1:07:15 – 1:07:15] Erik: Yeah.
[1:07:16 – 1:07:18] Erik: Yeah, so the video, it’s coming along.
[1:07:18 – 1:07:19] Erik: It’s going to be what it is for a little while.
[1:07:20 – 1:07:23] Erik: Nothing is going to change in terms of the podcast.
[1:07:24 – 1:07:33] Erik: But if you haven’t heard, you didn’t see, we should take this time to shout out that we are now on Spotify.
[1:07:33 – 1:07:34] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:07:35 – 1:07:36] Adam: I’m pretty proud of that.
[1:07:36 – 1:07:45] Erik: That’s awesome because it’s always been kind of a pain with the iTunes.
[1:07:45 – 1:07:48] Erik: It’s all super device-based.
[1:07:48 – 1:07:52] Erik: Do you have an Android or Apple, iOS, whatever?
[1:07:52 – 1:07:56] Erik: So you have to try to address all these different devices.
[1:07:57 – 1:07:58] Erik: Anybody can download Spotify.
[1:07:58 – 1:07:58] Erik: Yeah.
[1:07:59 – 1:08:08] Erik: I don’t know what kind of a Spotify account you have, what you pay for, but Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast, easily searchable.
[1:08:08 – 1:08:16] Erik: And anytime an episode comes out, will now be commensurately published on Spotify.
[1:08:16 – 1:08:20] Erik: Which for me personally, that is such a nice easy go-to.
[1:08:20 – 1:08:26] Erik: I would much rather just listen to it right from Spotify because I use Spotify for everything else.
[1:08:26 – 1:08:52] Adam: yeah i haven’t made the switch yet just because we haven’t had a new episode out since the that became a thing so yeah uh i’ve been listening to everything on stitcher and i’m definitely not not crazy about the app it’s fine maybe keep using it if like some of the ones i like to listen to aren’t on spotify but i think now i’m just gonna switch all my podcast i kind of was doing all my podcasts on stitcher because that’s where ours was right yeah i do listen to them now
[1:08:52 – 1:08:56] Adam: I listen to them at work when I’m cleaning the kitchen by myself.
[1:08:56 – 1:08:59] Adam: It’s my time to listen to Tumble Home.
[1:08:59 – 1:09:00] Adam: Everybody’s got their own time.
[1:09:01 – 1:09:02] Adam: Everybody’s got their own tumble time.
[1:09:03 – 1:09:05] Erik: How has tumble time not become a thing yet?
[1:09:05 – 1:09:06] Erik: Oh, my God.
[1:09:08 – 1:09:10] Adam: It’s tumble time.
[1:09:10 – 1:09:13] Adam: We’re in hour two of season two.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:15] Adam: Cheers, Eric.
[1:09:16 – 1:09:17] Adam: It’s tumble time.
[1:09:17 – 1:09:19] Adam: Yeah, so everybody’s got their own tumble time.
[1:09:22 – 1:09:27] Adam: And I’m going to start doing my tumble time on Spotify personally just because, yeah.
[1:09:27 – 1:09:28] Erik: It’s just way easier to use.
[1:09:28 – 1:09:29] Erik: Everything’s there.
[1:09:29 – 1:09:30] Adam: I’m hooked up there.
[1:09:30 – 1:09:36] Adam: If any of the other podcasts I listen to aren’t on Spotify, then see you later, suckers.
[1:09:37 – 1:09:37] Adam: No, I’m just kidding.
[1:09:38 – 1:09:39] Adam: I’ll keep listening.
[1:09:39 – 1:09:40] Adam: See you later, suckers.
[1:09:40 – 1:09:42] Adam: I’m a loyal listener.
[1:09:42 – 1:09:45] Erik: Yeah, so Spotify, that’s fun.
[1:09:45 – 1:09:47] Erik: That’s, I mean, super easy.
[1:09:48 – 1:09:53] Erik: Do we want to quick talk about what maybe our potential plans are in the next month?
[1:09:53 – 1:09:55] Erik: That’s kind of what this episode has been about.
[1:09:56 – 1:09:58] Erik: We’re going to go over our stuff?
[1:09:59 – 1:10:01] Erik: I think we’ve teased it a couple of times already.
[1:10:01 – 1:10:02] Erik: Oh, absolutely.
[1:10:03 – 1:10:23] Erik: I think the thinking is hopefully by about this time next month, we will have traversed the Pigeon River and ceremonially portaged the Grand Portage to complete from Lake Superior to Lac La Croix, the border lakes for both of us.
[1:10:23 – 1:10:27] Adam: Yes, that will absolutely fill in the last section for me.
[1:10:28 – 1:10:29] Erik: which is awesome.
[1:10:29 – 1:10:29] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:29 – 1:10:33] Adam: I can’t believe, uh, I honestly can’t believe that’s a thing.
[1:10:34 – 1:10:39] Adam: I’ve even, you know, I’ve been up to crane Sandpoint and Namikin, um, but in a motor boat.
[1:10:40 – 1:10:40] Erik: Yeah.
[1:10:40 – 1:10:42] Adam: And so it doesn’t really count, but, um,
[1:10:43 – 1:10:48] Adam: So I didn’t really do the section between Crane and the Lack, as our good friend called it.
[1:10:49 – 1:10:55] Adam: But everything in between there from Lack down now, I’ve basically gotten to South Fowl.
[1:10:55 – 1:10:57] Adam: So I need that Pigeon River.
[1:10:58 – 1:10:59] Erik: Need that Pigeon River.
[1:10:59 – 1:10:59] Adam: I love a river.
[1:11:00 – 1:11:01] Erik: And that’s the plan.
[1:11:01 – 1:11:02] Adam: So we’re going to do that.
[1:11:02 – 1:11:07] Adam: That’s our first trip, I think, of the year, unless we do some day trip stuff before then.
[1:11:07 – 1:11:13] Adam: Because, yeah, we want to do it in high water, but we don’t need to do it in flood stage.
[1:11:14 – 1:11:16] Erik: Which is kind of what it’s at right now.
[1:11:16 – 1:11:18] Adam: Yeah, we wouldn’t want to go now on the Pigeon River.
[1:11:18 – 1:11:18] Erik: Yeah.
[1:11:19 – 1:11:21] Adam: I’m not that hardcore anymore.
[1:11:22 – 1:11:24] Erik: I mean, we did the one flood stage.
[1:11:24 – 1:11:24] Erik: That was enough.
[1:11:25 – 1:11:27] Adam: We’ve proved our flood stage worth.
[1:11:27 – 1:11:29] Adam: I’m going to keep our perfect record intact.
[1:11:30 – 1:11:31] Erik: Just barely.
[1:11:31 – 1:11:32] Adam: We never capsized.
[1:11:32 – 1:11:36] Adam: I’ve only 98% capsized.
[1:11:36 – 1:11:37] Adam: Brought it back from the abyss.
[1:11:37 – 1:11:41] Erik: So yeah, we’ve got the Grand Portage as a completion.
[1:11:41 – 1:11:50] Erik: We might try to do some fun things with the camera, obviously some field recordings to put together some things.
[1:11:50 – 1:11:56] Erik: You know, if these videos never really come together in a solid full episode,
[1:11:57 – 1:12:04] Erik: We might just have it be a part of what you get access to as a patron of the show.
[1:12:05 – 1:12:05] Erik: Sure.
[1:12:06 – 1:12:08] Erik: And maybe just an occasional behind the scenes.
[1:12:09 – 1:12:11] Adam: If you want to see my fresh looks.
[1:12:11 – 1:12:15] Erik: If you want to hear Adam swearing off screen, like off the mic.
[1:12:15 – 1:12:23] Adam: I’ll be giving out disc golf recommendations, showing off some of my sculpture pieces, just only on the video.
[1:12:24 – 1:12:32] Adam: You get a little extra glimpse into the madness that is Studio K. I think that’s the fun of it and just the madness that is us in the field.
[1:12:33 – 1:12:37] Erik: The Madness of Us in the Field, yeah, that’s definitely something.
[1:12:38 – 1:12:38] Erik: It’s a lot of fun.
[1:12:39 – 1:12:45] Erik: I mean, I don’t really re-listen to any episodes besides the In the Field episodes.
[1:12:45 – 1:12:52] Erik: I have re-listened to those, and those are – like even for me, obviously, like there’s maybe a – Well, yeah, you get to listen to them in post.
[1:12:53 – 1:12:57] Adam: I always – I do once they get – once they’re up, I will go and listen to them.
[1:12:57 – 1:12:59] Erik: I listen to them on like four times speed in post, though.
[1:12:59 – 1:13:00] Erik: It’s not like an enjoyment thing.
[1:13:01 – 1:13:01] Erik: It’s just like a go-through.
[1:13:02 – 1:13:02] Erik: Keep it sharp.
[1:13:03 – 1:13:10] Erik: But yeah, the In the Field, like the PMA episode, like this winter when I was just like, I can’t handle this cold darkness anymore.
[1:13:10 – 1:13:11] Erik: Crashing through the brush.
[1:13:11 – 1:13:12] Erik: I need to listen.
[1:13:12 – 1:13:21] Erik: And so it’s just like, I love the sounds, like just like it doesn’t seem like a big deal at the time, but just getting the recordings of like…
[1:13:21 – 1:13:34] Erik: birds in the trees or just like the sound of water is like amazing it’s great so um but before shoveling water shoveling water yeah um
[1:13:35 – 1:13:38] Erik: So let’s shout out some patrons.
[1:13:38 – 1:13:39] Erik: This is awesome.
[1:13:39 – 1:13:46] Erik: We’ve got some people who are willing to donate, essentially.
[1:13:46 – 1:13:48] Adam: So we’re shouting out their full name and their birthday?
[1:13:48 – 1:13:49] Adam: That seems dangerous.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:56] Erik: Full name, birthday, social security card, and the 16-digit credit card number that they provided.
[1:13:57 – 1:14:00] Adam: I can’t believe Patreon’s giving this out like that.
[1:14:00 – 1:14:01] Erik: That’s crazy.
[1:14:01 – 1:14:06] Erik: These are the billing addresses for our patrons.
[1:14:06 – 1:14:10] Adam: I honestly can’t believe that we’ve got some patrons.
[1:14:10 – 1:14:11] Erik: We do.
[1:14:11 – 1:14:12] Adam: I can believe it, but…
[1:14:13 – 1:14:14] Adam: I also can’t believe it.
[1:14:15 – 1:14:17] Adam: Just like I can’t believe we’re actually in Season 2 right now.
[1:14:17 – 1:14:18] Adam: Season 2.
[1:14:18 – 1:14:19] Adam: We have a legit studio.
[1:14:19 – 1:14:21] Erik: We have boom mics.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:30] Erik: Yes, we do have mics that are attached to a table, and part of this episode has been recorded on video.
[1:14:32 – 1:14:40] Erik: I don’t know how much we want to give away in terms of what we’re going to do next week, but this month I want to do…
[1:14:41 – 1:14:45] Erik: I want to do the kind of like what’s in our bag episode where we talk about that.
[1:14:45 – 1:14:46] Erik: I also want to do…
[1:14:46 – 1:14:51] Erik: I kind of want to do another top 10 episode for waterfalls.
[1:14:53 – 1:14:56] Erik: And then probably get a lake episode in there.
[1:14:56 – 1:14:59] Erik: It’s been a while since we’ve just done a lake episode.
[1:14:59 – 1:14:59] Erik: Yeah.
[1:15:00 – 1:15:06] Erik: But for now, let’s finish with shouting out some…
[1:15:08 – 1:15:08] Erik: Some patrons.
[1:15:08 – 1:15:12] Erik: So we got some friends of Tumble Home.
[1:15:12 – 1:15:14] Erik: These are the $1 folks.
[1:15:15 – 1:15:21] Erik: Our undying gratitude goes to Josh S. Thank you, Josh.
[1:15:22 – 1:15:26] Erik: Lisa S. I’m thinking I’m going to just not give away full last names.
[1:15:27 – 1:15:29] Adam: That sounds smart.
[1:15:30 – 1:15:34] Erik: I tricked those Nigerian scammers who were just right.
[1:15:34 – 1:15:38] Erik: They had the pen on the paper thinking that they were going to get credit card numbers.
[1:15:38 – 1:15:38] Erik: Sorry, guys.
[1:15:38 – 1:15:41] Erik: You’re not getting credit card numbers or birthdays.
[1:15:42 – 1:15:49] Erik: And then Scott M. We’ve also got the $3 a month.
[1:15:49 – 1:15:51] Erik: These are the Happy Paddler’s.
[1:15:51 – 1:16:13] Erik: i love the term happy paddlers these are the happy paddlers this is where i think this is the the biggest portion of the patrons uh jacob n jared s lane l and that’s it well can i give out a party horn though yeah for the for the next level

[1:16:38 – 1:16:41] Erik: These are the $5 a month Coglin campers.
[1:16:42 – 1:16:47] Erik: They get a personalized selection of a Coglin’s brand product.
[1:16:48 – 1:16:53] Erik: We’re going to be selecting those for each individual one of these Coglin campers.
[1:16:53 – 1:16:54] Adam: I’m really excited.
[1:16:54 – 1:16:56] Adam: Are you doing egg holders for anybody?
[1:16:57 – 1:16:57] Erik: Maybe.
[1:16:57 – 1:16:57] Adam: Maybe.
[1:16:58 – 1:17:00] Erik: You feel lucky if you get an egg holder in the mail.
[1:17:00 – 1:17:00] Erik: Yeah.
[1:17:01 – 1:17:01] Erik: Yeah.
[1:17:01 – 1:17:03] Adam: Oh, what do you do with an egg holder, though?
[1:17:04 – 1:17:04] Adam: Oh, man.
[1:17:04 – 1:17:05] Adam: Don’t put eggs in it.
[1:17:06 – 1:17:06] Erik: Yeah.
[1:17:07 – 1:17:08] Adam: Store some knickknacks, though.
[1:17:08 – 1:17:14] Erik: We’ve got Dane C. Shout out to Dane C. He’s the Coghlan camper.
[1:17:14 – 1:17:17] Adam: Is this the order that they signed up to be Coghlan campers?
[1:17:17 – 1:17:19] Erik: Yeah, it’s order of date.
[1:17:19 – 1:17:22] Adam: So Dane was the first Coghlan’s camper.
[1:17:22 – 1:17:22] Adam: Is that right?
[1:17:23 – 1:17:24] Adam: That sounds about right.
[1:17:24 – 1:17:25] Adam: What up, Dane?
[1:17:25 – 1:17:25] Adam: Yes.
[1:17:26 – 1:17:26] Erik: Kyle.
[1:17:27 – 1:17:28] Erik: Kyle.
[1:17:28 – 1:17:28] Adam: We know Kyle.
[1:17:28 – 1:17:29] Adam: We know that Kyle.
[1:17:29 – 1:17:30] Adam: Friend of the show, Kyle.
[1:17:30 – 1:17:31] Adam: Friend of the show.
[1:17:31 – 1:17:32] Adam: Also a Coghlan’s camper friend.
[1:17:33 – 1:17:36] Erik: We better be prepared for one of those air horns, Kyle.
[1:17:36 – 1:17:36] Erik: It’s coming.
[1:17:38 – 1:17:43] Erik: And, oh, it’s, yeah, his name must be Max C. Oh, no.
[1:17:43 – 1:17:44] Adam: Now we give it all away.
[1:17:45 – 1:17:50] Erik: If there’s a real, yeah, if there’s a sleuth out there, you’d be able to tell who that is.
[1:17:51 – 1:18:13] Adam: got the double whammy from max got a reddit comment and a shout out on the show is he the show mvp i think at this point i think he is are we gonna start doing uh fantasy tumble home i don’t know what would that be you get points for shout outs or comments on the show or yeah what kind of comments whether we disparage you or not the quality of the cork
[1:18:14 – 1:18:20] Erik: Yeah, the cork is under four decibels, so you don’t get as many points.
[1:18:21 – 1:18:25] Erik: And then these are the… We teased this at the beginning of the show.
[1:18:25 – 1:18:31] Erik: These are the people that are getting a true piece of Tumble Home history.
[1:18:32 – 1:18:36] Erik: There are only two of these that currently exist.
[1:18:37 – 1:18:39] Adam: How long is this offer available for, for one?
[1:18:40 – 1:18:42] Adam: In perpetuity?
[1:18:42 – 1:18:42] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:43 – 1:18:47] Erik: Yeah, I think the Poppin’ a Wheeler crew… Poppin’ a wheel!
[1:18:48 – 1:19:02] Erik: You guys get access to whatever this video ends up being, an extra episode, a Tumble Home t-shirt, which we are still finalizing.
[1:19:02 – 1:19:06] Erik: I think we should maybe send out a picture of what that’s going to look like this week.
[1:19:06 – 1:19:07] Adam: We can send out a picture.
[1:19:07 – 1:19:10] Adam: I haven’t been able to get a hold of the local screen printer.
[1:19:10 – 1:19:11] Adam: We’re trying to keep it local.
[1:19:12 – 1:19:16] Erik: Yeah, it is a 100% unique design.
[1:19:16 – 1:19:21] Adam: I’m wandering around Grand Marais with my sketchbook looking for a screen printer.
[1:19:21 – 1:19:24] Erik: Yeah, he’s just knocking on all the doors asking, will you print this t-shirt?
[1:19:25 – 1:19:29] Adam: Do you have Photoshop and an old silkscreen printer?
[1:19:29 – 1:19:41] Erik: Yeah, so there are going to be three people getting access to these 100% unique exclusive t-shirts, which I think are loon bleep.
[1:19:43 – 1:19:43] Erik: Awesome.
[1:19:43 – 1:19:44] Erik: I love them.
[1:19:44 – 1:19:45] Erik: Loon bleep.
[1:19:46 – 1:19:46] Erik: Loon bleep.
[1:19:47 – 1:19:54] Erik: And then also what I’ve been teasing is the Poppin’ a Wheel bumper sticker.
[1:19:54 – 1:19:57] Adam: I’ve had so many people ask me, what the hell is Poppin’ a Wheel?
[1:19:57 – 1:19:58] Erik: What’s Poppin’ a Wheel?
[1:19:58 – 1:20:00] Erik: What does that mean?
[1:20:00 – 1:20:03] Erik: It’s very vague, but it sounds exciting.
[1:20:03 – 1:20:07] Erik: Yeah, so we got John B. John B. John B.
[1:20:09 – 1:20:15] Erik: Michael D. Michael D. And Mike K. Oh, we know who Mike K is.
[1:20:15 – 1:20:17] Erik: Come on, Mike K. We’re like friends.
[1:20:17 – 1:20:18] Erik: You don’t have to give us money.
[1:20:18 – 1:20:19] Erik: Thanks, though.
[1:20:19 – 1:20:20] Adam: Thanks, though.
[1:20:20 – 1:20:21] Adam: You do get a t-shirt.
[1:20:21 – 1:20:22] Adam: We’ll give you a t-shirt.
[1:20:22 – 1:20:23] Adam: All right, buddy.
[1:20:23 – 1:20:25] Erik: Heck, yeah.
[1:20:25 – 1:20:25] Erik: So, yeah.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:30] Erik: I mean, this was kind of a start of season two.
[1:20:31 – 1:20:33] Erik: Wrap up the end of the winter season.
[1:20:35 – 1:20:37] Erik: The show wrap up, what everything…
[1:20:38 – 1:20:47] Erik: It was a little bit of just kind of tying a bunch of knots, finishing up a bunch of little aspects of where we’ve been coming from, where we want to go.
[1:20:47 – 1:20:51] Erik: And I think from moving forward, they’re probably going to be…
[1:20:52 – 1:20:59] Erik: Kind of like we did last summer where it was one episode would be either field recording or kind of standalone.
[1:20:59 – 1:21:03] Erik: And then the next one was going to be hearing from the listeners.
[1:21:03 – 1:21:04] Erik: Interactive.
[1:21:04 – 1:21:05] Erik: Question of the week.
[1:21:06 – 1:21:15] Erik: I think we’re probably going to do a standalone one next week and then throw out the question of the week sometime in the next few days.
[1:21:16 – 1:21:17] Erik: So we’re ready for that.
[1:21:17 – 1:21:22] Erik: And I think it’s probably going to be the… Just no guarantees.
[1:21:23 – 1:21:28] Erik: If you hear it on here and you don’t see it anywhere, I think it’s probably going to be…
[1:21:30 – 1:21:31] Erik: I think it should be the waterfall one.
[1:21:32 – 1:21:33] Erik: I think that’s a…
[1:21:34 – 1:21:36] Adam: This is the waterfall season.
[1:21:36 – 1:21:37] Adam: It is waterfall season.
[1:21:37 – 1:21:38] Adam: Wave of the future, dude.
[1:21:38 – 1:21:39] Adam: Wave of the future.
[1:21:39 – 1:21:58] Erik: future but that’s 100 interactive do we want it to like i know when we did the top 10 vistas we did we included the north shore are we including the north shore with waterfalls i could easily come up with 10 without it yeah
[1:21:59 – 1:22:02] Adam: But, yeah, we don’t need to, but there’s some good ones.
[1:22:03 – 1:22:07] Erik: I think we should only include Bon Jovi’s and Quetico Waterfalls.
[1:22:08 – 1:22:14] Erik: If anybody else wants to throw down on their opinions, go ahead.
[1:22:14 – 1:22:15] Adam: I mean, High Falls, man.
[1:22:16 – 1:22:16] Adam: Come on.
[1:22:16 – 1:22:17] Erik: High Falls is tough to beat.
[1:22:18 – 1:22:22] Erik: You know, Gooseberry, overrated, unpopular opinion.
[1:22:24 – 1:22:26] Adam: Take that crap to Burger King, Gooseberry.
[1:22:26 – 1:22:27] Adam: Yeah.
[1:22:27 – 1:22:29] Erik: That might be a… That was a…
[1:22:29 – 1:22:31] Erik: Your spicy nuggets are crap.
[1:22:32 – 1:22:33] UNKNOWN: What?
[1:22:33 – 1:22:41] Erik: We were talking about some questions for this summer, and that was one of the things I thought would be fun was an unpopular opinion episode.
[1:22:41 – 1:22:43] Adam: Sure, well, that’s a teaser.
[1:22:43 – 1:22:46] Erik: It’s an ultimate teaser for, like, months down the road.
[1:22:47 – 1:22:51] Erik: Gooseberry’s not as cool as it’s cracked up to be, and lighthouses are dumb.
[1:22:51 – 1:22:53] Erik: Split rock can burn.
[1:22:53 – 1:23:00] Adam: All right, well, I think Gooseberry actually is cool, but I agree with you 100% that lighthouses are really overrated.
[1:23:01 – 1:23:04] Adam: Unless they’re on a Ghost Hunters episode.
[1:23:04 – 1:23:05] Adam: They’re chock full of spirits.
[1:23:05 – 1:23:07] Adam: Great AVP sessions.
[1:23:07 – 1:23:08] Erik: Gooseberry is pretty sweet.
[1:23:09 – 1:23:10] Erik: I’ve never understood lighthouses.
[1:23:10 – 1:23:11] Adam: Is there anybody here?
[1:23:12 – 1:23:13] Adam: I just saw something up there.
[1:23:14 – 1:23:17] Erik: I just got a chilly… You have goosebumps.
[1:23:17 – 1:23:18] Erik: Oh, look at those goosebumps.
[1:23:19 – 1:23:20] Adam: Must be the old keeper.
[1:23:20 – 1:23:21] Erik: There they are.
[1:23:21 – 1:23:25] Erik: There’s going to be like an hour missing from this video, but you’re getting it.
[1:23:25 – 1:23:26] Adam: Splice it all together.
[1:23:26 – 1:23:27] Erik: Splice it all together.
[1:23:27 – 1:23:29] Adam: Yeah, I’m down with the waterfalls.
[1:23:29 – 1:23:30] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:23:30 – 1:23:31] Adam: Yeah, we’ll try and keep it.
[1:23:32 – 1:23:38] Adam: I will say I’ll try and keep it all off the shore, but I’m going to have a hard time keeping high falls off of it.
[1:23:38 – 1:23:39] Erik: Yeah, well, that’s fine.
[1:23:39 – 1:23:41] Erik: That’s like ponder waters adjacent.
[1:23:42 – 1:23:42] Adam: Well, yeah.
[1:23:42 – 1:23:45] Adam: Especially if we’re going to do a Pigeon River trip this spring.
[1:23:45 – 1:23:45] Adam: Yeah.
[1:23:47 – 1:23:52] Erik: What’s the… What’s the state park down, like, south of Duluth that’s, like, got a bunch of crazy falls?
[1:23:53 – 1:23:56] Erik: Like, that’s, like, right outside of, like… You can’t include that.
[1:23:56 – 1:23:56] Erik: No.
[1:23:56 – 1:23:56] Adam: South of Duluth.
[1:23:56 – 1:23:57] Adam: Jake Cook.
[1:23:57 – 1:23:58] Adam: Jake Cook State Park.
[1:23:58 – 1:24:01] Adam: Honestly, I don’t even consider anything south of the first tunnel real, so…
[1:24:03 – 1:24:03] Erik: It’s all a hologram.
[1:24:04 – 1:24:05] Erik: It’s all a matrix.
[1:24:06 – 1:24:06] Erik: Yeah.
[1:24:07 – 1:24:07] Erik: Yeah.
[1:24:07 – 1:24:08] Erik: So…
[1:24:09 – 1:24:14] Erik: I think we’ve got every, like we’re, I feel like comfortable with everything being on a level playing field now.
[1:24:15 – 1:24:18] Erik: There’s been like for the last two weeks I’ve been like, I want to talk about this.
[1:24:18 – 1:24:19] Erik: I got to get this.
[1:24:19 – 1:24:22] Erik: We got to talk about Spotify, all the amazing people we saw at the show.
[1:24:23 – 1:24:25] Erik: And then we’ve got to talk about what we’re doing.
[1:24:25 – 1:24:30] Adam: Episode one of Game of Thrones where you got to kind of get everybody reacquainted to where everybody is.
[1:24:30 – 1:24:31] Adam: Yeah.
[1:24:31 – 1:24:37] Adam: Ducks in a row, you know, get it together and then we can proceed.
[1:24:37 – 1:24:42] Erik: Yeah, it was like the Goodwill hunting, like equation chalkboard.
[1:24:43 – 1:24:44] Erik: We just erased it.
[1:24:44 – 1:24:45] Erik: It’s all erased.
[1:24:45 – 1:24:45] Erik: It’s all clean.
[1:24:46 – 1:24:46] Erik: Fresh.
[1:24:46 – 1:24:47] Erik: We’re going forward.
[1:24:47 – 1:24:49] Erik: It’s going to be an awesome season.
[1:24:50 – 1:24:51] Erik: Open water is here.
[1:24:51 – 1:24:52] Adam: It is.
[1:24:52 – 1:24:52] Adam: It’s official.
[1:24:52 – 1:24:53] Adam: Pretty much.
[1:24:53 – 1:24:54] Adam: It’s official.
[1:24:54 – 1:24:54] Erik: Essentially.
[1:24:55 – 1:25:01] Erik: By the time this comes out on Sunday, there’s not going to be more than like a little ice cube floating around in a lake.
[1:25:01 – 1:25:06] Adam: Do you think that people are going to be upset that we didn’t really consider talking about fishing more?
[1:25:06 – 1:25:09] Adam: Although it is fishing opener up here this weekend.
[1:25:10 – 1:25:32] Adam: i don’t know we kind of dabbled in it with a few little cleo takes but you know i think last year we kind of featured fishing on opener and what happened we got skunked yeah the water is like somehow 30 40 degrees 2.1 degrees no the fish aren’t even alive i think we’re fine yeah we’ll get to fishing later honestly i don’t fish on opener that much or that hard at least
[1:25:32 – 1:25:35] Erik: No, fishing opener up here is like two days after ice out.
[1:25:35 – 1:25:37] Erik: Fish are just barely waking up.
[1:25:38 – 1:25:41] Erik: They’re not ready to do anything.
[1:25:41 – 1:25:44] Adam: Do we want to maybe jam the social media a little bit?
[1:25:45 – 1:25:47] Adam: I think we were talking about this on the ride back from the cities.
[1:25:47 – 1:25:48] Adam: Oh, sure.
[1:25:48 – 1:25:51] Adam: We haven’t really plugged our actual ways to get a hold of us.
[1:25:51 – 1:25:52] Adam: Obviously, we’re on Reddit.
[1:25:53 – 1:25:54] Adam: Check out RBWCA.
[1:25:54 – 1:25:57] Erik: RBWCA is a fun place to be these days.
[1:25:57 – 1:25:58] Erik: Don’t ruin it, please.
[1:26:00 – 1:26:02] Erik: Those subreddits, they can get ruined.
[1:26:03 – 1:26:17] Adam: sidetracked a little bit but it’s like this one’s pretty solid that’s all so we’re on there a lot we are obviously on Facebook and Eric is handling a lot of the Facebook side of it if you want to make a comment or send a message that way
[1:26:18 – 1:26:21] Adam: I got the Instagram site locked down.
[1:26:22 – 1:26:36] Adam: So you will notice, and I think we were talking about this on the ride, and I wanted to mention this, that a lot of places that you may follow their social media, like their Facebook and Instagram and everything else, it’s all the same stuff, just jamming every platform with the same stuff.
[1:26:36 – 1:26:40] Erik: Yeah, there’s the option to share via Instagram and Facebook.
[1:26:40 – 1:26:43] Erik: So it’s like you share the same thing on two different spots.
[1:26:43 – 1:26:46] Adam: Right, and a lot of people do this all the time.
[1:26:46 – 1:26:48] Adam: So then you’re like, I already saw this.
[1:26:48 – 1:26:48] Erik: Yeah.
[1:26:49 – 1:26:59] Adam: But I don’t know how many people follow us on both though, but I just want to say that very rarely are the material you see on those two feeds different.
[1:26:59 – 1:27:01] Adam: Did I say that wrong?
[1:27:01 – 1:27:02] Adam: They’re always different.
[1:27:02 – 1:27:03] Erik: They’re always different.
[1:27:03 – 1:27:08] Adam: We rarely actually double share onto both.
[1:27:09 – 1:27:13] Adam: We kind of both handle each thread in our own way.
[1:27:13 – 1:27:16] Adam: You get a little bit of a unique perspective that way.
[1:27:16 – 1:27:20] Adam: We definitely recommend if you’re on one or on the other, that’s cool and you can get a hold of us that way.
[1:27:20 – 1:27:22] Adam: If you’re on both, it’s worth a follow on both.
[1:27:22 – 1:27:25] Adam: I don’t do that for a lot of things.
[1:27:25 – 1:27:26] Adam: I’ll follow them here or there.
[1:27:26 – 1:27:47] Erik: yeah well we i mean we recognize we recognize that facebook is like the dying platform it’s stupid like honestly it’s just here’s the yeah season two the truth come out yeah well i mean the truth has always been just below the surface we’re there for you honestly yes we’re down to we’re down to chat but
[1:27:48 – 1:27:57] Erik: But I also don’t need to have another comment when I post a picture of snow in April where somebody’s like, yeah, so much for global warming.
[1:27:59 – 1:27:59] Adam: All right.
[1:27:59 – 1:28:01] Erik: That’s not what Facebook’s for.
[1:28:01 – 1:28:02] Adam: Right, uncle.
[1:28:02 – 1:28:02] Erik: Yeah.
[1:28:02 – 1:28:06] Erik: But I think we got a pretty good community on there regardless.
[1:28:06 – 1:28:07] Erik: It’s not.
[1:28:07 – 1:28:07] Adam: Yeah, no.
[1:28:07 – 1:28:08] Adam: I mean, it’s awesome.
[1:28:08 – 1:28:10] Adam: And we’re on Instagram.
[1:28:10 – 1:28:11] Adam: We don’t have a Snapchat yet.
[1:28:12 – 1:28:13] Adam: Yet.
[1:28:13 – 1:28:13] Erik: Yet.
[1:28:13 – 1:28:14] Erik: Yeah, whatever.
[1:28:14 – 1:28:15] Adam: I have a phone that can support it now.
[1:28:15 – 1:28:16] Adam: So watch out.
[1:28:16 – 1:28:17] Adam: Yeah.
[1:28:17 – 1:28:19] Adam: This might be the next big thing.
[1:28:19 – 1:28:26] Erik: Apparently, we can record for like 30 minutes before the camera gets like so hot that it has to like shut down.
[1:28:26 – 1:28:29] Adam: We already have a YouTube channel for those hot cameras.
[1:28:29 – 1:28:38] Erik: Yeah, it’s basically just going to be the most random, like, 30 minutes of, like, oh, we really cut there from what they were talking about.
[1:28:38 – 1:28:39] Adam: I don’t understand what they’re going for with this.
[1:28:39 – 1:28:43] Adam: All of a sudden, they’re just complaining about Facebook these days.
[1:28:43 – 1:28:43] Adam: So choppy.
[1:28:44 – 1:28:48] Adam: So we’re on YouTube, too, and Gmail, of course.
[1:28:48 – 1:28:50] Erik: TumbleHomeCast at Gmail.com.
[1:28:50 – 1:28:52] Adam: That is TumbleHomeCast at Gmail.com.
[1:28:52 – 1:28:54] Adam: I think Gmail is always going to be classic.
[1:28:54 – 1:28:57] Erik: Yeah, and I think we do have a voicemail or two.
[1:28:58 – 1:28:59] Erik: Oh, do we?
[1:28:59 – 1:29:01] Erik: Yeah, we’ll get to those next week.
[1:29:01 – 1:29:03] Erik: Kind of forgot about that.
[1:29:03 – 1:29:03] Adam: Yeah, I’m not ready.
[1:29:04 – 1:29:04] Adam: Voicemails.
[1:29:05 – 1:29:07] Adam: We didn’t get that many in season one.
[1:29:07 – 1:29:08] Adam: I don’t know if that’s going to be a real thing.
[1:29:08 – 1:29:14] Erik: Well, they kind of came around like halfway through, but we do have a number that you can call us at.
[1:29:14 – 1:29:18] Erik: We won’t answer, but you can leave a message.
[1:29:18 – 1:29:19] Adam: You sure can.
[1:29:19 – 1:29:20] Adam: That’s the whole point.
[1:29:20 – 1:29:20] Erik: Yeah.
[1:29:21 – 1:29:35] Erik: If you want your voice to be heard on a podcast, either start your own podcast or call us and we will play it and respond to it if it requires responding to.
[1:29:35 – 1:29:36] Erik: Or you can always just email us with questions.
[1:29:37 – 1:29:39] Erik: I talk to a lot of people on email who are just like, I like the show.
[1:29:40 – 1:29:43] Erik: I’m thinking about doing this kind of a trip.
[1:29:43 – 1:29:47] Erik: We’re not just here to completely take all of your content.
[1:29:47 – 1:29:48] Erik: We’re here to answer questions too.
[1:29:48 – 1:29:55] Erik: So if you want to just send me an email with a question on a trip that you’re going on, I’ll try to respond to it.
[1:29:56 – 1:30:03] Erik: And hopefully we can get to a point where maybe we’re even responding to it on the air where it will help more people.
[1:30:04 – 1:30:04] Adam: Right on.
[1:30:05 – 1:30:07] Erik: I think that covers them.
[1:30:07 – 1:30:07] Erik: Yeah.
[1:30:08 – 1:30:09] Erik: I think, yeah, that’s everything.
[1:30:09 – 1:30:15] Erik: iTunes, obviously, whatever reviews or stars do that.
[1:30:16 – 1:30:16] Adam: Do the stars.
[1:30:17 – 1:30:18] Erik: Spotify is the future, though.
[1:30:18 – 1:30:20] Erik: Honestly, we’re on there.
[1:30:21 – 1:30:24] Adam: Beyonce’s new album from two years ago is finally on there.
[1:30:24 – 1:30:27] Adam: I mean, we got on Spotify before Lemonade.
[1:30:28 – 1:30:28] Adam: Think about that.
[1:30:29 – 1:30:30] Erik: Yeah, it was right about the same time, I think.
[1:30:31 – 1:30:33] Adam: Well, Lemonade came out two years ago.
[1:30:34 – 1:30:38] Adam: We came out one year ago, and we beat her to Spotify.
[1:30:38 – 1:30:40] Adam: Oh, sure, in that regard.
[1:30:41 – 1:30:44] Erik: We’re even cooler than the platform itself.
[1:30:46 – 1:30:47] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[1:30:47 – 1:30:48] Erik: Is that it?
[1:30:48 – 1:30:48] Adam: That’s it.
[1:30:49 – 1:30:49] Adam: All right.
[1:30:49 – 1:31:02] Adam: Well, for Tumble Home and for Season 2 of Tumble Home from Studio K, we surely thank you for being with us through the whole first season.
[1:31:03 – 1:31:05] Adam: Shout out to everybody who’s listened in the first season.
[1:31:06 – 1:31:10] Adam: And welcome to all our new friends that find us in Season 2.
[1:31:11 – 1:31:12] Adam: We’re happy to have you here.
[1:31:12 – 1:31:13] Adam: This is about the park.
