Episode Transcript

[0:00:54 – 0:00:55] Adam: It’s mildly sweet.
[0:00:57 – 0:01:00] Adam: Am I detecting a hint of honey?
[0:01:03 – 0:01:04] Erik: We don’t have any honey.
[0:01:06 – 0:01:07] Erik: This Labrador tea for you.
[0:01:08 – 0:01:12] Erik: Steeped at the lowest possible temperature, welcome to Tummelholm in the field.
[0:01:12 – 0:01:13] Erik: It is morning on day four.
[0:01:14 – 0:01:15] Erik: Buckyburgers are in sight.
[0:01:15 – 0:01:18] Erik: Our stove is barely making water warm.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:20] Erik: I’m going to smash that thing with a rock when it’s done.
[0:01:21 – 0:01:22] Erik: I’m drinking tea.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:23] Erik: You’re drinking tea?
[0:01:24 – 0:01:26] Erik: That was pure in the field tea audio.
[0:01:26 – 0:01:28] Erik: I am Eric, joined as always by Adam.
[0:01:29 – 0:01:53] Adam: i’m the t-horse we’re gonna find out maybe over the course of this track if you find any ill effects or maybe all of your ailments will be cured yeah i mean there i don’t have many ailments to complain about other than my general um all of this everything all of this yeah uh but i guess my like my voice feels a little like raspy this morning i think like a
[0:01:54 – 0:01:57] Adam: Maybe I had a little too much crab salve last night around the fire.
[0:01:57 – 0:01:58] Erik: Yeah, maybe.
[0:01:58 – 0:02:01] Erik: We did put a serious beat down on that 5-liter sack.
[0:02:01 – 0:02:09] Erik: We were sipping the, you know, I don’t know what you call the light versions of the wine that the Franzias and the Velas put out.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:15] Erik: Your chillable reds, your refreshing blushes, your kind of not as high potency.
[0:02:15 – 0:02:16] Erik: Crisp white.
[0:02:16 – 0:02:18] Erik: Your buttery Chardonnays.
[0:02:18 – 0:02:24] Erik: This was a pure cab salve, so it was hitting a little harder, but we still showed it who’s boss.
[0:02:24 – 0:02:26] Adam: Yeah, well, it got nice and cold last night.
[0:02:26 – 0:02:31] Adam: And, yeah, last night of the trip, you just have a lot of extra, like, powers that get activated.
[0:02:31 – 0:02:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:02:32 – 0:02:35] Erik: The bugs, like, fully went away for the first time.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:38] Erik: Like, 100% gone the whole trip.
[0:02:39 – 0:02:41] Erik: Really got the fire stoked up real nice.
[0:02:41 – 0:02:44] Erik: I’m sure some people out here on Crab were loving it.
[0:02:44 – 0:02:45] Erik: But we didn’t stay up that late, honestly.
[0:02:45 – 0:02:46] Erik: It wasn’t, like, the first night.
[0:02:47 – 0:02:49] Adam: Yeah, it doesn’t say on the permit you can’t laugh after dark.
[0:02:50 – 0:02:52] Adam: Sorry, but it’s not on the permit.
[0:02:53 – 0:02:54] Adam: That is leaving a trace, though.
[0:02:54 – 0:02:54] Adam: Laughter.
[0:02:55 – 0:02:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:56 – 0:02:57] Adam: No laughing.
[0:02:57 – 0:02:59] Erik: You want to laugh, you go to Canada.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:02] Adam: Go dig a hole and laugh in it.
[0:03:03 – 0:03:04] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:04 – 0:03:05] Erik: Make sure you bury it, though.
[0:03:06 – 0:03:08] Adam: Definitely bury it three feet deep.
[0:03:08 – 0:03:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:12] Adam: I’m going to give this tea four out of ten.
[0:03:13 – 0:03:14] Adam: Tea is gross.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:19] Erik: He hasn’t been swayed on tea because that was a real solid effort, too.
[0:03:20 – 0:03:21] Adam: It wasn’t bad, though.
[0:03:21 – 0:03:24] Adam: I didn’t give it a one, but I’m looking forward to my coffee now.
[0:03:24 – 0:03:27] Adam: I’m just going to double into this with some coffee, I think.
[0:03:27 – 0:03:32] Erik: I think, honestly, if you would have steeped it a little bit warmer, you probably would have gotten a little bit more out of it.
[0:03:32 – 0:03:38] Erik: But, I mean, it is just a full wad of leaves and sticks, too.
[0:03:39 – 0:03:42] Erik: Like, you went full Yule Gibbons on that one.
[0:03:42 – 0:03:44] Erik: You got to take advantage of the full, the whole plant.
[0:03:47 – 0:03:48] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:03:48 – 0:03:49] Erik: There’s some heat to that water now.
[0:03:50 – 0:03:51] Erik: It’s only been an hour.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:51] Erik: God.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:58] Erik: I don’t know what’s wrong with the thing, but it almost blew Adam’s face off when he went to light it, too.
[0:04:00 – 0:04:01] Adam: Almost.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:03] Adam: Didn’t get me, though.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:03] Erik: Didn’t get you.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:07] Adam: It’s going to take a lot more than that to take me out.
[0:04:08 – 0:04:17] Erik: So, yeah, we’re going to slowly get packed up here, make our way back across the one portage that we hauled gear across on this trip.
[0:04:19 – 0:04:20] Erik: A lot lighter.
[0:04:20 – 0:04:24] Erik: We are 15 liters lighter on wine.
[0:04:24 – 0:04:26] Erik: Well, you didn’t have to tell them that part.
[0:04:26 – 0:04:28] Erik: I think I underestimated it, too, even.
[0:04:28 – 0:04:35] Erik: I went a little lower just for the sakes of people’s concern for our health.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:36] Adam: We’re alive.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:37] Adam: We’re fine.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:37] Erik: We’re fine.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:38] Erik: We’re doing it.
[0:04:38 – 0:04:41] Erik: We’re going to do a little, we’ve had animal roundup.
[0:04:42 – 0:04:47] Erik: We’re going to get a full proper food roundup because I know you’re all just sitting at home just clamoring.
[0:04:48 – 0:04:49] Erik: What have they been eating?
[0:04:49 – 0:04:50] Erik: What have they been eating?
[0:04:50 – 0:04:52] Erik: How has the walk performed?
[0:04:53 – 0:04:53] Erik: Biters.
[0:04:53 – 0:04:55] Erik: Where have the biters been?
[0:04:55 – 0:04:56] Adam: Well, that’s a good place.
[0:04:57 – 0:04:59] Adam: Good spot to start would be at the walk in the biters area.
[0:04:59 – 0:05:02] Erik: We should, but we’ll make a small mention here.
[0:05:02 – 0:05:06] Erik: We had a true loss and sadness in the Tumble Home family last night.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:09] Erik: Well, just dicking around with the field mic.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:14] Erik: Somehow we managed to delete the Castaway TCC track.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:18] Erik: All of that beautiful energy is lost from this world.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:20] Erik: It is poignant almost in a way.
[0:05:20 – 0:05:21] Erik: It’s almost like…
[0:05:21 – 0:05:29] Erik: Tom Hanks and the way he has to process the loss of the relationship with his sweetie Helen Hunt upon coming home.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:32] Erik: It’s just something we’re going to have to live with and move forward.
[0:05:32 – 0:05:33] Erik: The energy is just going to be different.
[0:05:34 – 0:05:35] Erik: We’re going to definitely still do it again, but…
[0:05:36 – 0:05:41] Adam: I can just tell you for sure that I said that Tom Hanks had a real stick up his butt like multiple times.
[0:05:41 – 0:05:46] Adam: And we got overflown by military aircraft while recording it.
[0:05:46 – 0:05:48] Erik: I think that was probably why it’s gone.
[0:05:48 – 0:05:51] Erik: I think there’s probably technology in this world that we captured them.
[0:05:51 – 0:05:55] Erik: I think we literally like pointed the field mic at a Chinook helicopter.
[0:05:55 – 0:05:55] Adam: I don’t think we did.
[0:05:55 – 0:05:59] Adam: I know you pointed it directly at them and yelled, what are you doing?
[0:06:01 – 0:06:04] Adam: So yeah, Eric postulated they have some sort of…
[0:06:05 – 0:06:25] Erik: laser technology that they maybe just deleted that track from us but specific track that they knew their audio was on because we got flown over while talking about a movie where planes crash and a man gets trapped on a desert island two like hyper beavers flew over they weren’t like your classic beaver they were bigger a little quieter i don’t know what they were yeah
[0:06:26 – 0:06:30] Erik: And they were flying in direct formations, one right behind the other.
[0:06:30 – 0:06:36] Erik: And then, what, 10 minutes later, a big double-propped helicopter.
[0:06:36 – 0:06:38] Erik: You’re thinking it was a Chinook.
[0:06:38 – 0:06:43] Adam: Yeah, on the track, for sure, I was boldly and confidently proclaiming, it’s a Chinook!
[0:06:44 – 0:06:47] Adam: Which I think that’s what it was, and I’m going to still go with that as my best guess.
[0:06:47 – 0:06:49] Adam: But, yeah, big, like, double helicopter.
[0:06:51 – 0:06:58] Erik: And then it had the refueling slash water-sucking dangler just dragging below it.
[0:06:58 – 0:06:59] Erik: What’s going on?
[0:06:59 – 0:07:01] Erik: You’d think you’d retract that thing for flight, yeah?
[0:07:02 – 0:07:03] Adam: What’s going on?
[0:07:03 – 0:07:04] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:07:04 – 0:07:05] Adam: He forgot to bring up the dangler.
[0:07:05 – 0:07:06] Erik: Yeah, and then?
[0:07:07 – 0:07:08] Adam: That happens sometimes.
[0:07:08 – 0:07:13] Adam: It’s like you ever leave a cup of coffee or a cup of tea on top of your truck before you drive off?
[0:07:13 – 0:07:13] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:07:14 – 0:07:40] Adam: it happens and then you just get to your destination and somehow it’s still there that’s embarrassing oh god angler was down probably all those campers saw it we better go back and delete their that’s why they came back so they could shoot the you know better name for the hypothetical weapon they used against us um last night but yeah some sort of like jamming technology they’re able to like hyper focus on just this field audio recorder and delete the castaway track yeah
[0:07:41 – 0:07:43] Adam: Probably one of the better things we’ve ever recorded.
[0:07:43 – 0:07:49] Adam: And for sure one of the hardest things to hear that got accidentally deleted before even we got to listen to it.
[0:07:49 – 0:07:51] Adam: So nobody will ever hear that one.
[0:07:51 – 0:07:54] Adam: But we’re going to re-record the Castaway one.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:57] Adam: But it’s definitely not going to be as good, unfortunately.
[0:07:57 – 0:07:58] Erik: You heard it here first.
[0:07:58 – 0:08:02] Adam: Anybody who’s ever had something get deleted by accident like that knows what we’re talking about.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:04] Adam: There’s just no way it could be as good.
[0:08:04 – 0:08:04] Adam: But I don’t know.
[0:08:04 – 0:08:05] Adam: Maybe it will be better in some way.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:06] Erik: Yeah, you never know.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:07] Erik: We’ll find out.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:10] Erik: But that’s a tale for another time.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:18] Erik: We should say that the planes then made a return flight about an hour later, almost like right at dusk.
[0:08:18 – 0:08:21] Erik: You could see the light coming just right over the treetops.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:26] Adam: Eric spotted the flashing light coming from way over there, and I’m like, oh, no, it’s the orbs again.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:32] Adam: This one was a white flashing light, and then Eric quickly deduced that it was probably the planes, which it was.
[0:08:33 – 0:08:39] Adam: And only the front one had the flashing light on, but then as they, like, neared us, they turned off the flashing light, which was weird.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:39] Field Mic: Yeah.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:43] Adam: So they went all back over us, and then, yeah, here comes the Chinook.
[0:08:43 – 0:08:50] Erik: And then there was a random solo unicopter that was just, like, doing its own thing.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:50] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:08:51 – 0:08:52] Erik: It was a weird night.
[0:08:52 – 0:08:54] Erik: Flight operations are happening over here.
[0:08:55 – 0:08:57] Erik: We were, like, honestly thinking, like, maybe, like,
[0:08:57 – 0:09:13] Adam: yellowstone erupted or something and all hands were on deck just heading towards the blast site but yeah the clouds last night were really wild too and it was just like what’s going on right now eric i remember thinking that a few times last night but everything seems calm now yeah
[0:09:13 – 0:09:15] Adam: We did get to DCRs last night.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:20] Erik: Yeah, we had to stay up until dang near pure darkness.
[0:09:20 – 0:09:25] Erik: It wasn’t DCR plus stars.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:34] Erik: That’s an idea we had for the new tumble tourney is we just start combining teams.
[0:09:34 – 0:09:35] Erik: Combining teams, yeah.
[0:09:35 – 0:09:36] Erik: DCR, Milky Way.
[0:09:36 – 0:09:38] Erik: I mean, who’s going to beat that team?
[0:09:41 – 0:09:42] Erik: We didn’t quite get to that point, though.
[0:09:42 – 0:09:45] Erik: There was always a light haze in the sky last night.
[0:09:45 – 0:09:55] Erik: You could see the big dipper was there, planets occasionally, but it wasn’t that full, crisp, milky cloud that we kind of were hoping for.
[0:09:55 – 0:09:59] Erik: But it was still a beautiful night, and it was dead, quiet, calm.
[0:09:59 – 0:10:02] Erik: I’m sure they could hear us over at the boathouse last night, but whatever.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:03] Erik: Absolutely, yeah.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:04] Erik: They were enthralled.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:05] Field Mic: Yeah.
[0:10:06 – 0:10:15] Erik: Maybe everybody was just listening with bated breath for the next hilarious thing we had to say.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:22] Erik: Yeah, so we thought maybe we were going to wood numb this site, but we burned it all up.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:23] Erik: It’s all gone.
[0:10:23 – 0:10:24] Adam: Yeah, we did have a nice pile.
[0:10:25 – 0:10:25] Adam: It looked impressive.
[0:10:26 – 0:10:28] Adam: I think I may have taken a picture of that wood pile.
[0:10:28 – 0:10:30] Adam: But yeah, it’s all gone.
[0:10:32 – 0:10:35] Adam: That big pine cone I captured for Firestar, that’s still there.
[0:10:36 – 0:10:37] Adam: There’s a couple pieces of…
[0:10:38 – 0:10:39] Adam: There’s some kindling laying around.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:42] Adam: We’re not totally burning everything, but…
[0:10:43 – 0:10:57] Erik: And there’s a couple of, there’s a true Bobby pile back there of your, uh, your railroad timbers that have been lightly scorched to fully charred, but, uh, still remain shocking that those things are even, uh, as burned as they are.
[0:10:57 – 0:10:58] Adam: That one had a real good effort on it.
[0:10:58 – 0:11:04] Adam: It looks like they really worked on that one for like a couple of days, but alas, they were not able to burn it up.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:06] Adam: Got the bobber out.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:11] Adam: Uh, I’m looking for one last chance at a walleye here this morning.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:11] Adam: Um,
[0:11:13 – 0:11:14] Adam: Yeah, just been bass so far.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:25] Adam: We’re not going to have a very in-depth fishing report for you on this trip, but all we really did was just dangle the slip bobber off this campsite intermittently throughout the trip.
[0:11:25 – 0:11:28] Adam: And it’s produced some nice bass.
[0:11:28 – 0:11:31] Adam: The best one was probably the first one that first night.
[0:11:31 – 0:11:55] Erik: big bass yeah i was a little surprised that we didn’t run into more but it’s been just enough to keep ourselves entertained and feed some turtles um so yeah no no firewood this morning nothing to get a fire going with and we’re just uh you know we want it we need to save ourselves for those burgered meats that’s right so just the coffee and the uh the sweet sweet tea
[0:11:57 – 0:11:59] Adam: Yeah, the tea is the official show sponsor, I suppose.
[0:11:59 – 0:12:00] Adam: Labrador tea.
[0:12:00 – 0:12:03] Adam: Yeah, sponsored by wild Labrador tea.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:04] Adam: There you go, Hopalicious.
[0:12:04 – 0:12:05] Adam: And tea horses.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:06] Erik: Here, hold this for me.
[0:12:06 – 0:12:08] Erik: I need to get another round of the old black stuff.
[0:12:10 – 0:12:22] Adam: Yeah, so we do have Zup’s breakfast sausages in the pack, but like Eric said, we don’t really have any firewood left yet.
[0:12:23 – 0:12:26] Adam: the stove isn’t cooperating enough to be able to like cook sausages.
[0:12:26 – 0:12:32] Adam: If we wanted, even if we had a fire going, I don’t even know if I could eat a breakfast sausage right now.
[0:12:33 – 0:12:34] Adam: I am, but not right now.
[0:12:34 – 0:12:37] Adam: Yeah, I guess maybe I think you are more in the park.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:39] Erik: You like your breakfast.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:43] Adam: Yeah, I usually do a frittata or something, and we didn’t do any breakfast on this trip.
[0:12:44 – 0:12:45] Erik: No fresh dill.
[0:12:45 – 0:12:48] Erik: The dill dens have only been used for practical things.
[0:12:48 – 0:12:52] Adam: Yeah, just bug nets and cameras.
[0:12:52 – 0:13:03] Erik: Bug nets and field recorders and protected 1991 Topps Desert Storm trading cards.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:06] Adam: So that’s still in the pack.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:07] Adam: We never got to the salads either.
[0:13:09 – 0:13:18] Erik: We got back and we pushed her a little too far with leaving that salad just not in a cooler in a bare barrel baking in the sun all day.
[0:13:18 – 0:13:20] Erik: And my God, it turned into a nightmare.
[0:13:20 – 0:13:23] Erik: You know the look of when spring mix gets that color.
[0:13:23 – 0:13:26] Erik: If you open that, it’s basically like a dead body.
[0:13:26 – 0:13:27] Adam: Yeah, I can’t do it.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:31] Adam: So that one’s still sealed in a sarcophagus in the bottom of the garbage pack.
[0:13:32 – 0:13:35] Adam: The tomb that they built over Chernobyl at this point.
[0:13:35 – 0:13:39] Adam: We’re going to have to go buy some quickcrete when we get back into Ely just to take care of that one.
[0:13:39 – 0:13:40] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:13:40 – 0:13:42] Adam: Rotten lettuce is the worst.
[0:13:42 – 0:13:51] Adam: Yeah, we did have a whole head of iceberg, too, and an aforementioned small teensy bottle of real legit ranch dressing.
[0:13:52 – 0:13:53] Adam: Diesel and warm.
[0:13:53 – 0:14:00] Adam: There’s probably some cherry tomatoes left in there, a little bit of red pepper, I suspect.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:00] Adam: Cucumber?
[0:14:00 – 0:14:01] Erik: Do we have a cucumber?
[0:14:01 – 0:14:05] Erik: Little baby cucumbers, but red pepper got fully used up in the dinner menu.
[0:14:06 – 0:14:09] Erik: Two nights ago, which was a sweeping success.
[0:14:09 – 0:14:10] Erik: Probably the best meal of the trip.
[0:14:10 – 0:14:17] Erik: Only a couple of nitpicks that I have, and that’s just because I didn’t really feel like buying a specific sauce to bring it all together.
[0:14:17 – 0:14:24] Erik: But, yeah, we had with the wok, which has been performing beautifully, I would say.
[0:14:24 – 0:14:25] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:14:25 – 0:14:27] Erik: We had some fried rice.
[0:14:27 – 0:14:33] Erik: Got a couple of those pre-cooked and bagged little rice packets so that they’re already dried out.
[0:14:33 – 0:14:37] Erik: Because the secret to fried rice is if you’re cooking it at home, you’ve got to cook it the night before.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:38] Erik: You’ve got to plan.
[0:14:38 – 0:14:40] Erik: Let that rice dry out.
[0:14:41 – 0:14:44] Erik: So we just bought those and then shrimp.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:47] Erik: A whole bag of shrimp.
[0:14:47 – 0:14:48] Erik: A whole bag of salad shrimp.
[0:14:48 – 0:14:52] Erik: Tails off, de-veined everything so we didn’t have to be picking that shrimp out here.
[0:14:53 – 0:14:54] Erik: Red pepper.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:56] Erik: Started with red pepper, onion.
[0:14:57 – 0:15:01] Erik: And then… Oh, he actually started with the eggs.
[0:15:01 – 0:15:11] Erik: And that was the true test of the walk and the non-stick factor is what I would say is whether a walk is performing well and if you’ve gotten a good season on it.
[0:15:11 – 0:15:15] Erik: And I feel like, if anything, the pressed…
[0:15:16 – 0:15:25] Erik: potato crunchers that we had on night one with all that oil was probably the key to getting a nice first layer of seasoning on it.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:29] Erik: So, yeah, eggs, lightly beat eggs into the pan.
[0:15:30 – 0:15:31] Erik: Kind of just let those cook.
[0:15:31 – 0:15:32] Erik: Didn’t even stick a tiny bit.
[0:15:32 – 0:15:33] Erik: You could just slide them around.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:40] Erik: It looked like one of those, as seen on TV ads, like the copper pan where they’re like, you can’t even get cheese to stick to this.
[0:15:40 – 0:15:42] Erik: Couldn’t burn cheese on here if you wanted to.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:49] Erik: There’s a bunch of shoe, sole from a shoe is melted on this, and look, it just drips right out.
[0:15:49 – 0:15:50] Erik: It was that nonstick.
[0:15:51 – 0:15:52] Adam: Eggs are a thing of beauty.
[0:15:53 – 0:16:00] Erik: But yeah, you cook the eggs, toss those out just to the side, and then you do onions, peppers, and then rice, shrimp.
[0:16:01 – 0:16:02] Erik: Bring it all together with a little…
[0:16:04 – 0:16:29] Erik: know what the brand was the sauce yeah the blue hoisin teriyaki sauce super garlic i think it’s yeah it was garlicky but i think my only nitpick and then you dump the eggs back in of course and bring those back up to temp uh was uh there wasn’t enough fish sauce wasn’t enough soy a little too sweet for my liking needed a little salt and or some kind of a vinegar but yeah we didn’t bring a hot sauce of any kind
[0:16:29 – 0:16:54] Erik: also shocking no hot sauce on the trip that was an oversight not on purpose no yeah right but everything you know it’s like you got to buy like your jumbo glass bottle of a hot sauce when you’re at the the new uh the fancy new zups i should have gotten some packets those we can get in packets yeah i’m sure we probably could have looked hard if we really had hot sauce on the list but it just failed to go on the list so it wasn’t even on the radar yeah our packet game was light on this trip for sure
[0:16:55 – 0:16:58] Erik: Yeah, no mayo, no hot sauce.
[0:16:59 – 0:16:59] Erik: What are we doing?
[0:17:00 – 0:17:01] Adam: We’re evolving.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:05] Adam: Now I’m drinking tea instead of having mayonnaise packets.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:06] Adam: I don’t like it.
[0:17:08 – 0:17:08] Erik: I don’t like that.
[0:17:09 – 0:17:12] Adam: I did like this trip a lot, though, but that part, it’s regrettable.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:16] Adam: I don’t think I got poisoned.
[0:17:16 – 0:17:17] Adam: I still feel fine, by the way.
[0:17:17 – 0:17:18] Adam: It’s a slow burn.
[0:17:19 – 0:17:23] Adam: We’ll see if I can make it back across that beaver pond on the portage this morning.
[0:17:25 – 0:17:26] Erik: At least we know what we’re expecting now.
[0:17:26 – 0:17:29] Erik: Now we know how to plan for it and not try and go through it.
[0:17:29 – 0:17:37] Adam: We’re still at a loss as to whether or not the old man on the portage the first night, if he was trying to tell us not to go across or challenging us to walk through it.
[0:17:37 – 0:17:37] Adam: I’m not sure.
[0:17:38 – 0:17:43] Adam: I was under the impression that they had already taken their packs across that and were coming back to get the canoe.
[0:17:43 – 0:17:44] Adam: So I just assumed they walked through it.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:46] Adam: But in hindsight, they were just like,
[0:17:47 – 0:17:48] Adam: messing around and didn’t even have packs.
[0:17:49 – 0:17:53] Erik: Yeah, Adam’s outing himself as a real ageist here.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:55] Erik: He’s like, if the old man can do it, I can do it too.
[0:17:55 – 0:18:05] Adam: He was short too, and I was like, well, if he made it through those little teensy little legs wearing white sneakers and white socks.
[0:18:06 – 0:18:12] Erik: And then I guess we just kind of decided that they had just taken a little afternoon slash early evening, well, full-blown evening.
[0:18:12 – 0:18:13] Erik: It was late in the day.
[0:18:14 – 0:18:16] Erik: Just paddled over from the old boathouse.
[0:18:17 – 0:18:19] Erik: Let’s take out the old girl for a night paddle, hun.
[0:18:19 – 0:18:21] Adam: Let’s go see how that beaver dam’s looking.
[0:18:21 – 0:18:22] Erik: Yeah, and then they just walked it.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:23] Adam: And then also.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:25] Adam: One of the buggiest nights of the year.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:28] Erik: Testing how deep the beaver dam waters were.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:29] Erik: For fun.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:29] Erik: I guess.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:30] Erik: Because they didn’t have anything.
[0:18:30 – 0:18:31] Erik: They just had paddles.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:33] Adam: They didn’t look like they were all covered in mud either.
[0:18:33 – 0:18:37] Adam: And dark water stains on their white sneakers at all.
[0:18:37 – 0:18:39] Adam: So in hindsight, I don’t think they even got in.
[0:18:39 – 0:18:40] Adam: They just like eyeballed it.
[0:18:41 – 0:19:01] Erik: it looks deep yeah that black like it’s there’s still like a little light line of sludge on the canoe from putting the boat in that thing i’m not even my boat shorts are like permanently ruined like they have just like a dark stain on them from where i went into the water you can tell how deep i got in right up to the bottom of my butt there’s a full line on those things
[0:19:02 – 0:19:04] Adam: Like that’s what, what’s that from?
[0:19:04 – 0:19:08] Adam: Oh, it’s from the beaver pond on the, on the old crab portage.
[0:19:08 – 0:19:11] Erik: Oil slick from the beaver pond, which is barely, it’s not even on the map.
[0:19:11 – 0:19:17] Erik: There’s nothing on the map, even to suggest that there might be water anywhere along, like halfway along that portage.
[0:19:17 – 0:19:20] Erik: I don’t know what that is, but anyway, um,
[0:19:22 – 0:19:30] Erik: I think the only other bit of food roundup news is the mysterious biters that we ended up out here with.
[0:19:30 – 0:19:32] Adam: People are worried right now.
[0:19:32 – 0:19:34] Adam: They didn’t bring mayonnaise packets.
[0:19:34 – 0:19:35] Adam: What are these guys doing?
[0:19:35 – 0:19:35] Adam: Don’t worry.
[0:19:35 – 0:19:36] Adam: We did have biters.
[0:19:36 – 0:19:38] Erik: This isn’t the tumble home I grew up with.
[0:19:39 – 0:19:43] Erik: We were in the biter aisle looking for maybe something fun and unique maybe to change it up.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:45] Erik: A different biter even.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:47] Erik: They had like eight different products from White Castle.
[0:19:48 – 0:19:50] Erik: We were kind of looking for that burger.
[0:19:50 – 0:19:51] Adam: We were looking for the burger biter.
[0:19:51 – 0:19:54] Adam: I thought if anybody’s going to have this, it’s going to be Zups and Ely.
[0:19:55 – 0:20:06] Erik: They had chicken rings and, like, full sliders and other random things you would never even possibly imagine from your White Castle freezer aisle options.
[0:20:07 – 0:20:18] Adam: People are going to start thinking, like, in Castaway, how, like, we were questioning whether or not FedEx even wanted to be in the movie or if they had paid to be in the movie or if they just got… How that happened.
[0:20:18 – 0:20:21] Adam: Like, people are wondering, like, did Zups pay to be on these episodes?
[0:20:21 – 0:20:23] Adam: Because how often we’ve talked about the…
[0:20:23 – 0:20:46] Erik: fine selection and fair pricing at zups the fair pricing we didn’t even slow down to look at the what the meat tubes were priced at at this point but they don’t have the two-way mirror in front of the meat tubes anymore which i do miss i do hope that the new true value that’s taking its place up on the top of the hill in ely does keep the two-way mirrors just in the back by the tractor parts or whatever by your batteries
[0:20:47 – 0:20:50] Adam: Tractor parts and batteries.
[0:20:50 – 0:20:51] Erik: That’s what’s into True Value, right?
[0:20:51 – 0:20:52] Adam: That’s what they do.
[0:20:54 – 0:21:12] Erik: So the biter selection was there, but nothing really piqued our interest until we looked just a little bit closer and we saw your classic yellow 50-pack biters, but it was branded with what we still do not have any idea what it is.
[0:21:13 – 0:21:13] Erik: It just happened to be
[0:21:15 – 0:21:19] Erik: buffalo chicken flavored, but the whole packaging just was black.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:22] Erik: And it had FaZe Clan written on it.
[0:21:22 – 0:21:24] Erik: And we don’t have any idea what that is.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:27] Adam: We’re definitely not white supremacists or anything.
[0:21:27 – 0:21:33] Adam: If this is like a code word for gamers or something that has a negative connotation, we aren’t aware of it at all.
[0:21:33 – 0:21:35] Adam: Or if it has a good connotation, we can’t take credit for it.
[0:21:35 – 0:21:37] Adam: What is FaZe Clan?
[0:21:37 – 0:21:39] Erik: We’re assuming it’s gotta be like…
[0:21:40 – 0:21:40] Erik: It’s a…
[0:21:45 – 0:21:47] Erik: It’s like a Zoomer thing, right?
[0:21:48 – 0:21:49] Erik: It’s got that game font.
[0:21:50 – 0:21:59] Erik: It seems like something that you would find on the side of a mountain dew flavor that’s like gamer juice for the phase clanners.
[0:21:59 – 0:22:01] Adam: Yeah, that’s what I’m assuming it is.
[0:22:01 – 0:22:03] Adam: Some sort of, what’s the hot new game?
[0:22:03 – 0:22:06] Adam: It definitely has nothing to do with Minecraft.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:10] Erik: I was like, well, we’ll just grab it and then there’s probably more information on the back.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:11] Erik: No information.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:18] Erik: You can scan a QR code to get more, like, Tostino points and learn more about FaZe Clan.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:23] Erik: Which is just, like, shockingly, like, a lack of information.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:24] Erik: Like, what the…
[0:22:24 – 0:22:25] Adam: It’s got me intrigued, though.
[0:22:25 – 0:22:26] Adam: It’s doing its job.
[0:22:27 – 0:22:27] Erik: Yeah.
[0:22:27 – 0:22:30] Erik: I don’t even know if I want to go home and look it up and find out what it is.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:32] Adam: Let’s just… That one might be best left a mystery.
[0:22:32 – 0:22:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:22:33 – 0:22:35] Erik: But, yeah, there is a potential that it’s a Jorp situation.
[0:22:37 – 0:22:44] Erik: And like we said, we had no preconceived knowledge of what this term is, and if we are offending anybody out there, we will issue an apology.
[0:22:44 – 0:22:45] Erik: Let’s put it in the show notes.
[0:22:45 – 0:22:46] Adam: We’re sorry.
[0:22:46 – 0:22:47] Adam: Let’s just say it ahead of time.
[0:22:47 – 0:22:48] Adam: I’m sorry.
[0:22:48 – 0:22:48] Adam: We’re sorry.
[0:22:48 – 0:22:50] Adam: We’re sorry for talking about FaZe Clan.
[0:22:51 – 0:22:51] Adam: We didn’t know.
[0:22:51 – 0:22:52] Adam: We didn’t know.
[0:22:52 – 0:22:54] Adam: That’s a good enough excuse, right?
[0:22:54 – 0:22:55] Adam: I don’t have to put it in the show notes.
[0:22:55 – 0:22:56] Adam: Yeah, all right.
[0:22:56 – 0:23:01] Adam: This is episode 224 of Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast coming to you live in the field.
[0:23:03 – 0:23:04] Adam: We’re sorry.
[0:23:06 – 0:23:06] Adam: We’re sorry.
[0:23:06 – 0:23:08] Adam: Please don’t cancel us over biters.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:10] Adam: Over the weirdest biters.
[0:23:10 – 0:23:11] Adam: But they were really good.
[0:23:11 – 0:23:13] Adam: They were actually maybe the best ones.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:14] Adam: One of my favorite biters.
[0:23:14 – 0:23:15] Adam: And maybe it was the Wok.
[0:23:15 – 0:23:16] Adam: Maybe it was the Fez Clan, Erica.
[0:23:17 – 0:23:37] Erik: bleep that out now we have to go back and moon bleep all the mentions of phase clan yeah we uh we’ve spent uh five years weeding out uh people that we uh deem as uh unworthy of listening to this show and then all of a sudden we get canceled from the other side by being phase clanned again we are sorry
[0:23:39 – 0:23:41] Erik: But, yeah, I think the wok had a lot to do with it.
[0:23:41 – 0:23:43] Erik: They were fried in a lot of butter.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:44] Erik: But I think it was also the innards.
[0:23:45 – 0:23:49] Erik: It had, like, just the right amount of spicy.
[0:23:49 – 0:23:51] Erik: I was like, ooh, spicy biter.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:55] Erik: I didn’t get, like, full, like, buffalo chicken flavor.
[0:23:55 – 0:23:57] Adam: I didn’t even know they were buffalo chicken, honestly.
[0:23:57 – 0:23:58] Adam: It was just biter flavored.
[0:24:01 – 0:24:25] Erik: it’s also like yeah it’s not like oh yeah pepperoni when you eat the pepperoni like the zups meat stick from the from the meat chain yeah where you’re like hey that’s teriyaki like i don’t know was it i don’t know i guess phase clan yeah so the last two days all we’ve been referencing is how something is a phase clan no idea what it means but it’s funny so uh
[0:24:26 – 0:24:31] Adam: It’s probably the world championship team of the most popular video game.
[0:24:31 – 0:24:34] Adam: And those guys are actually more famous than Taylor Swift, really.
[0:24:34 – 0:24:36] Adam: If you do the numbers.
[0:24:36 – 0:24:38] Adam: It’s like the World Cup guys.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:40] Adam: More people watch the World Cup than the Super Bowl.
[0:24:40 – 0:24:40] Adam: Shut up.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:41] Erik: Yeah, right.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:42] Adam: I don’t care.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:43] Adam: I watch them both.
[0:24:43 – 0:24:45] Adam: What’s wrong with you?
[0:24:45 – 0:24:47] Adam: You can FaZe Clan and listen to Taylor Swift.
[0:24:48 – 0:24:49] Adam: You definitely can’t.
[0:24:49 – 0:24:50] Adam: You have to bleep this whole track.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:51] Adam: Yeah.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:52] Adam: Ugh.
[0:24:52 – 0:24:53] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:24:53 – 0:24:57] Erik: So we don’t know what to make of that, but it was a solid, successful biter adventure in the park.
[0:24:58 – 0:25:00] Erik: Once again, some things don’t change.
[0:25:00 – 0:25:04] Erik: We have grown and changed, or maybe just gotten lazier in some ways.
[0:25:04 – 0:25:04] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:25:04 – 0:25:05] Erik: Smarter.
[0:25:05 – 0:25:08] Erik: Smarter, but we still are bringing biters into the park.
[0:25:08 – 0:25:10] Erik: Pushed the salads to the limit.
[0:25:11 – 0:25:13] Erik: Got a little greedy on that one.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:14] Erik: Should have known.
[0:25:14 – 0:25:15] Erik: Should have done that earlier, I guess, but…
[0:25:16 – 0:25:18] Adam: I can’t let the shrimp go to waste.
[0:25:19 – 0:25:20] Erik: Yeah, we had all that shrimp.
[0:25:20 – 0:25:21] Erik: Ate all that shrimp.
[0:25:21 – 0:25:25] Adam: The only thing I really feel bad about is those breakfast sausages not getting eaten up.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:26] Adam: We should have had those one of these days.
[0:25:26 – 0:25:28] Adam: But, you know, that’s just the way it goes.
[0:25:28 – 0:25:30] Adam: You’re always going to have some stuff left in the food pack.
[0:25:30 – 0:25:31] Adam: What happened with the Jarlsberg?
[0:25:32 – 0:25:34] Adam: Have we ever demolished that, or is there still a hunk left?
[0:25:34 – 0:25:35] Erik: We pretty much killed it.
[0:25:35 – 0:25:42] Erik: There is, like, a light hunk up against the, what do you call that part of the heel of the cheese?
[0:25:43 – 0:25:43] Erik: The rind.
[0:25:43 – 0:25:44] Erik: Yes, there it is.
[0:25:44 – 0:25:45] Erik: There is a word for it.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:48] Erik: But it was so good, like, warm and in the sun yesterday.
[0:25:49 – 0:25:57] Erik: Man, it just brought me right back to Quetico, except that yarrow’s bird was a much firmer, cooler, October level of cheese, like…
[0:25:57 – 0:26:00] Adam: Yeah, you can tell the weather forecast based on your Jarlsberg.
[0:26:00 – 0:26:04] Adam: Yeah, your Jarlsberg thickness and consistency is the only thermometer we need.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:06] Adam: Yeah, it’s a camp barometer, really.
[0:26:06 – 0:26:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:08] Erik: That was delicious.
[0:26:09 – 0:26:15] Erik: Yeah, nothing really in the form of big extravagant breakfasts, you know.
[0:26:15 – 0:26:22] Erik: I guess that’s the one thing with the walk is you don’t really get your – you could probably still do a frittata.
[0:26:22 – 0:26:24] Adam: You could do some sort of scrambler or something.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:25] Adam: It would probably be more of a scrambler, yeah.
[0:26:25 – 0:26:26] Adam: Yeah, that would be good, though.
[0:26:27 – 0:26:28] Adam: I love the way those eggs came out.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:34] Adam: I would be excited to see what we could do with a breakfast, but, again, it’s not in us today to do that.
[0:26:34 – 0:26:36] Adam: So that will be a future trip.
[0:26:36 – 0:26:39] Adam: Do you have the walk?
[0:26:39 – 0:26:41] Adam: Has he joined the team then?
[0:26:41 – 0:26:42] Erik: In your mind?
[0:26:42 – 0:26:43] Adam: Yeah, I’m a big fan of the walk.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:47] Adam: It weighs nothing, and it did great work for us when called upon.
[0:26:47 – 0:26:49] Adam: So I’m all in on the walk.
[0:26:50 – 0:26:57] Erik: Yeah, it is definitely, it literally does weigh like less than the aluminum, like little pot nesting kit that we have here.
[0:26:57 – 0:27:09] Erik: I think the only thing that we failed to bring, which is not the biggest deal in the world because we’re heading out today, but you definitely need to put that thing in its own specific sheath of some sort because after it’s been on the fire, it just turns everything black.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:11] Adam: Yeah, that’s what I always did with the cast iron.
[0:27:11 – 0:27:12] Adam: I had its own little bag.
[0:27:12 – 0:27:16] Adam: The only thing that ever went in that bag was the cast iron skillet.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:20] Adam: That was the skillet bag, and, yeah, you need one for the walk for sure.
[0:27:22 – 0:27:25] Adam: But, yeah, I would be excited to see what you could do for a little breakfast with that thing.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:28] Adam: I think it would work just wonderfully.
[0:27:28 – 0:27:28] Erik: I think so, too.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:32] Erik: That’s your food roundup, ladies and gentlemen.
[0:27:32 – 0:27:33] Erik: We’ve rounded it up.
[0:27:33 – 0:27:43] Erik: We’ve just got a few things to shove into packs here before we roll on out of the crab and man chain adventure.
[0:27:43 – 0:27:48] Erik: You know you are, of course, going to be still following along at home.
[0:27:48 – 0:27:53] Erik: We have some warmies waiting for us and looking forward to that.
[0:27:54 – 0:27:58] Erik: You don’t have anything else on your notes that we needed to get to before we pack up?
[0:28:00 – 0:28:01] Erik: He’s checking notes.
[0:28:01 – 0:28:04] Erik: No, we got all the notes checked off, sir.
[0:28:04 – 0:28:05] Erik: All right.
[0:28:05 – 0:28:09] Erik: Well, we’ll see you at the boathouse, I guess.
[0:28:18 – 0:28:19] Adam: Another mission accomplished.
[0:28:21 – 0:28:22] Erik: Back off the water.
[0:28:22 – 0:28:24] Erik: So many missions were accomplished on this trip.
[0:28:24 – 0:28:26] Erik: We’re making people look bad.
[0:28:27 – 0:28:29] Adam: Burned up all my checklists because they’re all done.
[0:28:29 – 0:28:30] Adam: They’re all completed.
[0:28:31 – 0:28:33] Erik: Fully checked, crossed off, and burnt.
[0:28:34 – 0:28:34] Erik: On burnt side.
[0:28:34 – 0:28:36] Erik: Burnt on boathouse.
[0:28:36 – 0:28:37] Erik: Boathouse lake.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:39] Erik: Yeah, but it is the moment of truth.
[0:28:39 – 0:28:43] Erik: We as always return to the vehicle.
[0:28:44 – 0:28:47] Erik: It is the moment of truth, though, because we’ve got a unique situation here.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:48] Adam: We do.
[0:28:48 – 0:28:50] Adam: We always have one thing up our sleeve.
[0:28:51 – 0:28:52] Erik: You always keep you guessing.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:54] Adam: I went and put on fresh clothes.
[0:28:54 – 0:28:59] Adam: I might have to burn my leggings and that entire pair of underwear from this trip.
[0:29:00 – 0:29:06] Adam: But I’m changing to fresh gear, and this shirt’s got something up its sleeve, Eric, and it involves a culvert.
[0:29:07 – 0:29:08] Adam: Nobody’s ever seen moves like this.
[0:29:08 – 0:29:16] Adam: We usually like to get back and have a glove box warming, which we do have a technical glove box warming, but we have something else to share with you.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:19] Adam: Today, dear friends, it’s culvert warmies.
[0:29:20 – 0:29:22] Erik: Culvert warmies.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:29] Erik: Our livers couldn’t possibly handle processing any more of the big bruiser beers that we started the trip off with.
[0:29:29 – 0:29:34] Erik: And we had parked the vehicle and we didn’t really feel like obviously bringing glass into the park.
[0:29:34 – 0:29:35] Field Mic: Not going to do it.
[0:29:35 – 0:29:36] Erik: So we found…
[0:29:37 – 0:29:41] Adam: I didn’t want to walk them back up because you’ve got to park like a mile and a half straight up a hill.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:43] Adam: So I didn’t want to walk them back up there.
[0:29:44 – 0:29:48] Adam: So we’re kind of looking around and this boat launch is really nice if you’re trying to launch a motorboat.
[0:29:49 – 0:29:50] Adam: And it works great for a canoe too.
[0:29:51 – 0:29:54] Adam: But there is, under the boat ramp itself, there’s a culvert.
[0:29:55 – 0:30:22] Adam: um this is like way over engineered i’m gonna say this whole complex they spent way too much money on this yeah i was gonna say there was no expenses spared at all for this it’s just like this culvert alone probably costs more than two of my cars and the canoe yeah just for the culvert piece but terrorists like walkway down to like a treated lumber decking like just for what like just for what we’re doing right now yeah so we weren’t sure what we’re like i don’t know let’s hide these last two beers from ghost of ed abby dear friend of the show
[0:30:23 – 0:30:25] Adam: So sneak deal, we’re not having Labrador.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:26] Adam: Labrador tea was the fake.
[0:30:27 – 0:30:28] Adam: Uh-oh.
[0:30:28 – 0:30:29] Adam: There’s somebody coming.
[0:30:29 – 0:30:29] Adam: Uh-oh.
[0:30:30 – 0:30:30] Erik: Well, quick good, you know.
[0:30:31 – 0:30:31] Adam: It’s too late.
[0:30:32 – 0:30:32] Erik: It’s too late.
[0:30:32 – 0:30:33] Adam: What’s this guy doing?
[0:30:33 – 0:30:34] Adam: Just a truck.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:36] Erik: Just a quick ripping and tearing.
[0:30:36 – 0:30:38] Adam: There’s a lot of traffic in here, too.
[0:30:38 – 0:30:41] Adam: It’s, like, really hard to, like, get a little peace and quiet down here.
[0:30:41 – 0:30:41] Adam: What’s this guy doing?
[0:30:41 – 0:30:42] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:30:42 – 0:30:54] Erik: I don’t know, maybe it’s Kentucky coming down to use the quad-sized Port-A-John that would probably have just helped Tom Hanks fly completely all the way home if he would have found one of that size.
[0:30:55 – 0:30:58] Adam: Yeah, that one he would have had no problem escaping the island.
[0:31:00 – 0:31:02] Adam: He just gave a wave and it’s just turning around here, it looks like.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:03] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:31:03 – 0:31:04] Erik: There’s no parking spots.
[0:31:04 – 0:31:05] Erik: You’re not allowed to park down here, sir.
[0:31:06 – 0:31:07] Erik: Back to Kentucky.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:08] Adam: Let’s quick go look.
[0:31:09 – 0:31:11] Adam: So yeah, it’s over here, like to the side.
[0:31:11 – 0:31:18] Adam: So we’ve been gone four days, you know, there’s a chance somebody else found these, but I kind of threw, I threw them down in there and then I threw a stick over them.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:19] Erik: A stick.
[0:31:20 – 0:31:21] Erik: They’re there.
[0:31:21 – 0:31:21] Erik: Yes.
[0:31:21 – 0:31:22] Erik: All right.
[0:31:23 – 0:31:26] Erik: I’m getting down, crouching.
[0:31:26 – 0:31:27] Erik: Oh, they’re way back in there.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:28] Adam: Oh, sorry.
[0:31:29 – 0:31:31] Adam: I threw this nice piece of lumber in front of them.
[0:31:34 – 0:31:35] Adam: They feel pretty good and cold too.
[0:31:35 – 0:31:36] Erik: Ooh, nice.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:43] Adam: We ran into some people on the portage out of crab and they told us it was 38 last night was the low.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:46] Adam: And we reported earlier that it was a nice cool night.
[0:31:47 – 0:32:10] Adam: oh look at this culvert sludge we even got no we got a snail oh my god there’s a culvert sludge rinse them off and let’s go around yeah rinse those things off well it did rain a tiny bit so i felt like the culvert was pretty dry maybe the high end of the culvert maybe that’s why they slid in there a little bit more maybe what if it would have just downpoured and they would have shot out the other side of the culvert we found them but they’re not where we thought
[0:32:14 – 0:32:16] Erik: Well, it didn’t really do…
[0:32:16 – 0:32:17] Adam: It’ll work.
[0:32:17 – 0:32:19] Erik: As long as the tops are fine.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:27] Adam: Alright, so what we have left is a Founders Backwoods Bastard Ale Age and Oak Bourbon Barrels.
[0:32:28 – 0:32:29] Adam: Ale though, it’s just an ale.
[0:32:30 – 0:32:34] Erik: I have the Ale Brewed with Molasses and Oak Age.
[0:32:34 – 0:32:35] Erik: These are both from Founders.
[0:32:36 – 0:32:40] Erik: I got the Curmudgeon and you have the Backwoods Bastard.
[0:32:40 – 0:32:42] Adam: I don’t got an ABV on this one.
[0:32:44 – 0:32:45] Erik: They’re high, I’m sure.
[0:32:45 – 0:32:45] Erik: This is 9.8.
[0:32:46 – 0:32:48] Erik: There’s no way I can drink this whole thing.
[0:32:49 – 0:32:49] Erik: It’s not happening.
[0:32:50 – 0:32:50] Erik: Jeez.
[0:32:51 – 0:32:57] Erik: This is like a summer rental insanity out here.
[0:32:57 – 0:32:58] Erik: Look at that beard guy.
[0:32:58 – 0:33:00] Erik: Look at that beard guy just giving us the stare down.
[0:33:00 – 0:33:02] Erik: The beard is whipping sideways.
[0:33:04 – 0:33:06] Adam: That’s probably us from the future or something.
[0:33:07 – 0:33:08] Adam: Wow.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:12] Adam: I’m waiting for John Candy to come through with a jet boat.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:28] Erik: i’m way out the uh uh water ski hijinks or something you got the lighter i do there we go let’s get one opened i think wound management was uh mostly successful on the trip you hold that yeah your hand is wrapped but it looks all right
[0:33:28 – 0:33:31] Erik: It’s not any worse than when I started.
[0:33:31 – 0:33:36] Erik: It’s a little pussy today, but I think that’s because I fell asleep with it in the hammock not closed.
[0:33:38 – 0:33:42] Erik: And it kind of like, I think it got just like some light like lint and stuff kind of.
[0:33:42 – 0:33:43] Erik: I woke up this morning.
[0:33:43 – 0:33:44] Erik: Cheers, my good man.
[0:33:44 – 0:33:45] Adam: Another successful trip.
[0:33:48 – 0:33:49] Adam: It’s really not that warm.
[0:33:51 – 0:33:52] Adam: I had some culvert stuff in that one.
[0:33:52 – 0:33:53] Erik: No, it’s not.
[0:33:53 – 0:33:54] Erik: But it’s not hot.
[0:33:55 – 0:33:56] Erik: It’s not hot.
[0:33:56 – 0:33:59] Erik: There’s no way I’d be able to do any more than like a sip or two of this.
[0:34:00 – 0:34:01] Erik: I don’t know why.
[0:34:01 – 0:34:02] Adam: What is that boat doing?
[0:34:02 – 0:34:04] Adam: Oh, God.
[0:34:05 – 0:34:07] Erik: It sounds, well, I think it’s the dock.
[0:34:07 – 0:34:08] Adam: The dock is racking.
[0:34:08 – 0:34:11] Erik: It sounded like a flat john boat just slapping the water.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:12] Adam: All right.
[0:34:13 – 0:34:19] Adam: Anyways, thanks to Ghost of Abbey and apologies to Hopalicious for hiding the real show sponsor late.
[0:34:19 – 0:34:20] Adam: Deep, deep in the shag.
[0:34:20 – 0:34:24] Adam: This is probably not going to end up being too long of an episode, so he won’t have to look too hard.
[0:34:24 – 0:34:24] Adam: Right.
[0:34:25 – 0:34:52] Erik: thems thems won’t have to look too hard eric we also have a backup just in case this um these were found or something you know um we weren’t really sure what we were doing honestly so we had already acquired glove box warmies anyways and switching back over to the original glove box warmies these are uh surly lemonades refreshing ale your malt uh beverage with natural flavors added this is way more my jam especially yeah this is very heavy it’s hot
[0:34:53 – 0:35:14] Erik: like out you know the sun is out it is a beautiful day though it’s a goddamn picturesque like i don’t think you could paint a better day if you had an ai generator to make it it’s perfect last night was by far the best night of the trip and then oh yeah today the last day of the trip this is a trip that was blessed by amazing weather the whole way this is the best day of the whole trip
[0:35:14 – 0:35:15] Erik: Low humidity, low winds.
[0:35:15 – 0:35:17] Erik: We had like a light south two maybe.
[0:35:18 – 0:35:27] Erik: We were a little concerned about getting out and having to deal with the maw that is the multi-lobed giant sneaky big burnt side.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:30] Adam: I think I’m going to join you with the lemonade.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:31] Adam: I can’t right now.
[0:35:31 – 0:35:33] Adam: I got to ease into it with a lemonade beer first.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:39] Adam: But yeah, we, I don’t know, let me take that.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:42] Adam: We ran into, so I’ll just tell you how the portage went.
[0:35:42 – 0:35:45] Adam: We were a lot smarter about that big portage this time out.
[0:35:45 – 0:35:47] Adam: We treated it as two portages, which is what it is.
[0:35:47 – 0:35:52] Adam: If you’ve got your map in front of you, you can just mark it as two 200-rod portages with a beaver pond in the middle.
[0:35:54 – 0:35:59] Adam: So we just, Eric heroically just took the boat and the gear pack, which is feeling pretty good.
[0:35:59 – 0:36:00] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:36:00 – 0:36:00] Adam: How’d that go for you?
[0:36:01 – 0:36:03] Adam: You took it all the way to the beaver pond and won.
[0:36:03 – 0:36:03] Erik: Pretty solid.
[0:36:03 – 0:36:05] Erik: I was counting to 50 by the end of it.
[0:36:05 – 0:36:08] Erik: And just like, if I can just go another 50, then I’ll go another 50.
[0:36:09 – 0:36:12] Erik: And then I’m like, I was getting pretty close to being like, I just got to drop this.
[0:36:12 – 0:36:14] Erik: The shoulders, the shoulders just can’t do it anymore.
[0:36:14 – 0:36:18] Adam: But right as I was like getting right to that point, I looked up and I was like, there’s the sludge pond.
[0:36:18 – 0:36:19] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:19 – 0:36:20] Adam: The sludge pond.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:23] Adam: There it is.
[0:36:24 – 0:36:28] Adam: Um, and I just took the food barrel, which is pretty feeling pretty good.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:30] Adam: The food barrel and the paddles is what I had.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:36] Adam: So I ran down there and Eric threw it right in the beaver pond and we quickly got across it.
[0:36:36 – 0:36:42] Adam: It was a real pro maneuver, but then from the beaver pond all the way back to burnt side, we did a one and a half there.
[0:36:43 – 0:37:00] Adam: and so i took the food barrel all the way across and then i ran into a tandem group that was going in and then there’s a very strange old man in short shorts we’re gonna have to pause here there’s another big boat coming here with a tow handle on it we might be talking some toes here these guys we’ll come back to you in a second
[0:37:01 – 0:37:02] Adam: All right, we’re back.
[0:37:03 – 0:37:03] Adam: Jesus Lord.
[0:37:04 – 0:37:07] Adam: What are we at, like a boat launch here or something?
[0:37:08 – 0:37:13] Adam: Every three and a half minutes, there’s a new truck or somebody pulling up to the dock down there.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:14] Adam: You can’t get a moment of peace.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:17] Adam: So we’ve driven up to the second terrace.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:20] Adam: It says it’s vehicle with trailer parking only.
[0:37:20 – 0:37:22] Erik: Yeah, F minus to this boat landing.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:23] Erik: Like, get a bigger boat landing.
[0:37:23 – 0:37:23] Erik: Come on.
[0:37:23 – 0:37:24] Adam: Well.
[0:37:24 – 0:37:26] Adam: There’s like a thousand houses on it.
[0:37:26 – 0:37:28] Adam: Well, that’s, why are we acting surprised?
[0:37:28 – 0:37:32] Adam: There’s a bunch of, it’s like one of two launches on this whole lake, and it’s on a steep hill.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:34] Adam: Like, what are they supposed to do with this?
[0:37:34 – 0:37:42] Adam: I just feel bad for these poor bastards next door with their fancy house and beautiful lawn, and they got to live next to the pores at the boat launch.
[0:37:43 – 0:37:46] Adam: Yeah, we got you.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:57] Adam: Before I get back to the story, we just pulled up here next to this beautiful first-generation Toyota Tundra with the crew cab with the suicide doors.
[0:37:57 – 0:37:59] Adam: But he’s got just a aluminum…
[0:37:59 – 0:38:00] Adam: I don’t know what kind of canoe this is.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:01] Adam: It’s like a Grumman.
[0:38:01 – 0:38:09] Adam: It’s a Grumman aluminum canoe, just bare metal on the roof, like halfway, you know, and then just ratchet-strapped down, like, real hard.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:10] Adam: It doesn’t look…
[0:38:12 – 0:38:14] Adam: Doesn’t look great, but I guess it gets the job done.
[0:38:14 – 0:38:15] Adam: No pads.
[0:38:15 – 0:38:16] Erik: Nothing.
[0:38:16 – 0:38:18] Erik: Nothing to protect the metal on metal.
[0:38:19 – 0:38:19] Adam: Whatever.
[0:38:19 – 0:38:21] Adam: You do you.
[0:38:21 – 0:38:22] Adam: But there’s fishing rods in there.
[0:38:22 – 0:38:23] Adam: Why is it here, though?
[0:38:24 – 0:38:25] Adam: Shouldn’t the boat be in the water?
[0:38:25 – 0:38:28] Erik: He’s out working on sprinkler systems or something.
[0:38:28 – 0:38:30] Adam: That’s the only thing people are doing out there is just working.
[0:38:31 – 0:38:33] Adam: Yeah, a lot of contractors.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:35] Adam: Back in the day, everybody loved contractors.
[0:38:36 – 0:38:59] Adam: anymore not anymore we’re against them but i love the tundra i don’t appreciate the bare metal on metal but you know it’s a first generation tundra it’s gonna have some dings in it at this point back to the story though so the two guys with the one of them had the canoe on i think they left a bunch of fishing gear and an extra pack they were definitely coming back i don’t know if they knew the situation with the beaver dime uh beaver pond or whatever but
[0:38:59 – 0:39:10] Adam: Then it was just this old guy wearing like short shorts and like joggers, you know, and I was like, so we like, I dropped the food pack and I’m going back to find Gordy, you know, at the halfway point.
[0:39:11 – 0:39:18] Adam: And he’s like just walking right with me and talking the whole way, you know, and I talk a lot, but this guy really talked a lot.
[0:39:19 – 0:39:21] Adam: You know, people that talk a lot know other people.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:24] Adam: You can recognize it when you’re talking too much and when other people are doing it.
[0:39:25 – 0:39:26] Erik: Game recognizes game.
[0:39:26 – 0:39:26] Adam: Exactly.
[0:39:27 – 0:39:32] Adam: So the short, short man, he was even older than the first ghost we saw on the portage on Monday.
[0:39:32 – 0:39:38] Adam: And we’re walking, and, yeah, he goes, I was kind of asking him about that beaver pond.
[0:39:38 – 0:39:39] Adam: I was like, what’s the deal with that?
[0:39:39 – 0:39:41] Adam: He’s like, I put in a complaint to the Forest Service about that.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:46] Adam: Last year, an 8-year-old fell in and lost his shoe and was crying on the portage.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:46] Adam: I found him.
[0:39:47 – 0:39:49] Adam: He didn’t say anything about anybody else being with this kid.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:53] Adam: He just found an eight-year-old crying in the beaver pond with a missing one shoe.
[0:39:53 – 0:39:54] Adam: The old sludge pond.
[0:39:55 – 0:39:55] Erik: Poor 8-year-old.
[0:39:55 – 0:40:02] Adam: He tells me, he goes, there’s actually a buried plank bridge in there of 2x6s, two 2×6 boards.
[0:40:03 – 0:40:05] Adam: You’ve seen these on a lot of portages in the Boundary Waters.
[0:40:05 – 0:40:07] Adam: Apparently, there’s a boardwalk somewhere down there.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:08] Adam: Jeez.
[0:40:08 – 0:40:10] Adam: And you can, like, people have gotten there, like, stuck in it.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:13] Adam: Or if you, like, fall off the boardwalk and miss it.
[0:40:13 – 0:40:14] Adam: I was like, I never saw a boardwalk.
[0:40:14 – 0:40:16] Adam: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:17] Adam: But I definitely fell in almost.
[0:40:17 – 0:40:19] Adam: And he was like, yeah, it happens a lot.
[0:40:20 – 0:40:37] Adam: yeah apparently this guy just walks portages for a living well this is weird because we saw like basically a couple out there on monday that was just doing the same thing like we thought they were tripping and we got no they just were there with their canoe walking the portage yeah the uh burnside the cummings portage is the new mall walker that’s the crab of the north crab yeah
[0:40:37 – 0:40:39] Erik: That would be a hell of a portage.
[0:40:39 – 0:40:40] Erik: That’s a long one.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:43] Erik: On the way in and on the way out, we just saw people walking the portage.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:44] Adam: Walking it, yeah.
[0:40:44 – 0:40:46] Adam: Getting a little steps in.
[0:40:46 – 0:40:52] Adam: So then when I came back with the canoe, I saw, oh yeah, sure, he’s got just a motorboat tied up off to the side of the landing.
[0:40:52 – 0:40:54] Adam: He’s like, yeah, I got a place on Burntside.
[0:40:55 – 0:40:57] Adam: I just come over here and walk it a couple times a week.
[0:40:57 – 0:40:58] Adam: It’s a nice trail.
[0:40:59 – 0:41:01] Adam: And other than the beaver pond, it is a pretty nice trail.
[0:41:01 – 0:41:03] Adam: And a bunch of big pines in there, it’s pretty.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:08] Erik: Yeah, I just was wondering, did we talk about the power boxes on Burntside?
[0:41:08 – 0:41:09] Erik: I don’t know if we did.
[0:41:09 – 0:41:14] Erik: If anybody knows, is there underwater electrical cords just all over the lake?
[0:41:14 – 0:41:20] Erik: Because you see those big green humming, you see them in suburban neighborhoods, and they’re all over out there.
[0:41:20 – 0:41:22] Erik: It’s a weird scene out here on Burntside, man.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:24] Adam: You’ve got to power all these boathouses.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:25] Erik: There’s red lights on rocks.
[0:41:25 – 0:41:27] Erik: We’re like, where’s the electricity coming from for that thing?
[0:41:28 – 0:41:37] Erik: I mean, I get the buoys marking the rocks and stuff to make sure you’re not dinging a prop or whatever, but there’s literal aircraft runway lights on some of these rocks out there in the middle of the lake.
[0:41:38 – 0:41:38] Field Mic: Yeah.
[0:41:39 – 0:41:42] Adam: You know, and so I said something like, what’s up with all these?
[0:41:42 – 0:41:43] Adam: I asked the old guy with the short shorts.
[0:41:44 – 0:41:48] Adam: Mr. Short Shorts, I said, what’s up with all these boathouses out here?
[0:41:48 – 0:41:52] Adam: I’m from over on the east side, and I’ve never seen so many boathouses in my life.
[0:41:52 – 0:41:54] Adam: And he goes, yeah, they’re illegal now.
[0:41:54 – 0:41:57] Adam: And I go, well, I saw one that was clearly under construction.
[0:41:57 – 0:41:58] Adam: He goes, that’s the loophole.
[0:41:59 – 0:42:01] Erik: Yeah, you just build it on the old footprint.
[0:42:01 – 0:42:02] Adam: Put it on the old footprint.
[0:42:02 – 0:42:05] Adam: You’re right as rain is according to the law, he says.
[0:42:05 – 0:42:08] Erik: You just build straight up 10 stories if you want.
[0:42:08 – 0:42:11] Adam: I was like, yeah, it looks like we got pretty good weather and not too much wind.
[0:42:11 – 0:42:14] Adam: And he’s like, yeah, I was a little worried about like paddling across Burnside.
[0:42:14 – 0:42:18] Adam: If we had some big wind, I wasn’t expecting how much fetch is out there.
[0:42:19 – 0:42:21] Adam: He just goes, yeah, a lot of people die out there.
[0:42:23 – 0:42:51] Adam: matter of fact this is like this is just as uh you know as he hiked a lot of people die out there that’s true and then there’s like a big like um barricade just on a boulder that you paddle by leaving out of this thing and like somebody must have like flipped a snowmobile or something the classic orange and white reflector like road construction barricade just like welded into a rock pile yeah somebody must have smoked that with a sled or whatever in the winter and died for sure
[0:42:51 – 0:42:52] Adam: This guy just grassed it.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:53] Adam: I love it.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:54] Field Mic: Yeah.
[0:42:54 – 0:42:56] Field Mic: So this is, I mean, the parking up here is nice.
[0:42:57 – 0:42:57] Erik: It’s fine.
[0:42:58 – 0:42:59] Adam: But it seems like they need more of it.
[0:43:00 – 0:43:01] Adam: Well, they just need more down by the lake.
[0:43:02 – 0:43:02] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:43:02 – 0:43:03] Adam: It’s goofy.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:07] Adam: I wonder, I’m assuming there used to be an old version of the Boulangerie that was like way worse.
[0:43:07 – 0:43:10] Adam: And this is like a vast improvement on what they had.
[0:43:10 – 0:43:10] Adam: And it is nice.
[0:43:10 – 0:43:14] Adam: It looked like, I think we know this, it looked like something was stamped 2020.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:15] Erik: It looks new.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:18] Erik: It’s fresh and new and no expenses spared.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Adam: But, um.
[0:43:22 – 0:43:23] Adam: Yeah, these beers are pretty good.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:25] Adam: And what are you giving these surly lemonades refreshing ale?
[0:43:26 – 0:43:29] Erik: It’s a 5.5%, so we’ll go ahead and give it 5.5 out of 6.
[0:43:30 – 0:43:33] Adam: There’s an eyeball popping out of a lemon, it looks like.
[0:43:33 – 0:43:34] Adam: And then there’s lemon pizza?
[0:43:34 – 0:43:35] Adam: What’s going on here?
[0:43:35 – 0:43:36] Adam: A lemon sword?
[0:43:37 – 0:43:39] Adam: Yeah, and a skull on a lemon.
[0:43:39 – 0:43:41] Adam: It’s just a sword going through the lemon.
[0:43:42 – 0:43:48] Adam: The goofiest part about this ridiculous terrace system is that you’ve got to park up here, but there’s not like a legit trail to get down there.
[0:43:48 – 0:43:50] Adam: There sort of like is a bushwhacker’s trail.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:55] Adam: Because the road S-curves up and down this hill.
[0:43:55 – 0:43:59] Adam: So you just basically have to walk the road to get back down there.
[0:43:59 – 0:44:03] Adam: There’s not a direct route for after you’ve parked your vehicle to just get back down to the launch.
[0:44:04 – 0:44:26] Adam: i don’t know you know they’re working with what they got here i just wasn’t happy about having to park like literally a mile away up on literally out on the van back what the hell yeah yeah we were maybe thinking there was like a closer one we saw on the map maybe there is one on the nat geo we were looking at that last night and there is one marked but it looks like you gotta take like a pretty rough gravel road to get up to that one and it’s probably even a closer it’s probably a farther paddle yeah yeah
[0:44:27 – 0:44:28] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:33] Adam: I think this is the right one to use for what we’re doing, but there’s certainly not a whole lot of other canoe campers parked here.
[0:44:33 – 0:44:35] Adam: There’s a couple cars up in the
[0:44:35 – 0:45:02] Erik: in the pores a lot up there but i mean considering what some of these public access points have looked like in the past where it’s just packed to the brim with other people canoeing like we definitely i feel out of place here every vehicle has a big boat trailer and is like clearly like working on something they got all kinds of like lumber and it’s just a bunch of contractors and we’re like is this this doesn’t feel like the right place but i think it is yeah i wonder how many boat houses are on this lake and what’s up with the undersea cable system and um
[0:45:03 – 0:45:05] Adam: Yeah, we saw a barge at one house.
[0:45:05 – 0:45:11] Adam: A literal barge that I assume was used to bring a whole excavator over or something to an island house.
[0:45:11 – 0:45:15] Erik: And that was the one that had the four-stall boathouse with fresh, brand-new lumber.
[0:45:15 – 0:45:19] Erik: And you can see that they were clearly putting in joists to then build on top of it.
[0:45:19 – 0:45:24] Adam: Yeah, they were putting in a game room arcade with a hot tub or something out there.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:25] Erik: Yeah, it’s great.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:25] Erik: I love it.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:27] Erik: I mean, yeah, it’s the old footprint.
[0:45:28 – 0:45:32] Adam: Yeah, but the old man in the short shorts didn’t seem too impressed with boathouses.
[0:45:32 – 0:45:33] Adam: He was like, I don’t have one.
[0:45:33 – 0:45:35] Erik: Yeah, he said he was kind of lightly against it.
[0:45:35 – 0:45:42] Adam: Yeah, but he was a nice old guy and then walked around the next corner and there’s Gordy sitting on the side porch.
[0:45:42 – 0:45:43] Adam: I was like, well, this is where I get off.
[0:45:44 – 0:45:46] Adam: Have a great walk, sir.
[0:45:46 – 0:45:47] Adam: And a good day to you, sir.
[0:45:48 – 0:45:51] Erik: Yeah, the 1.5, I don’t know if we’ve ever met closer.
[0:45:51 – 0:45:56] Adam: The two guys that were going in ahead of me, we all met right at the Gordy boat.
[0:45:56 – 0:45:57] Erik: Yeah, there was like five of us there at one point.
[0:45:57 – 0:45:58] Adam: Yeah, it was pretty awesome.
[0:45:59 – 0:46:02] Erik: Yeah, by the time you lifted the canoe up, I didn’t even have to break stride.
[0:46:02 – 0:46:06] Erik: You turned and you just started walking and I just was right behind you.
[0:46:06 – 0:46:08] Erik: It was like, this is how it’s supposed to work.
[0:46:08 – 0:46:10] Adam: That’s exactly how 1.5 should be done.
[0:46:10 – 0:46:12] Adam: It was perfectly executed, a great way to end the trip.
[0:46:13 – 0:46:17] Adam: But we had one more thing in store, which is the crossing of Burntside slash Boathouse Lake.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:20] Adam: And yeah, it’s damn near glass calm out there.
[0:46:20 – 0:46:23] Adam: I mean, it was just a perfect day for a paddle across Burnside.
[0:46:23 – 0:46:24] Erik: It is a pretty lake.
[0:46:24 – 0:46:25] Erik: It’s a very pretty lake.
[0:46:25 – 0:46:28] Erik: It’s quintessential Bonjou waters, especially on a day like today.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:37] Adam: Yeah, I wonder how much a cabin with a boathouse on one of these islands with full power and utilities, what’s that going for on the open real estate market right now?
[0:46:37 – 0:46:41] Erik: Yeah, well, hopefully the steakhouse has some real estate listings on the TV.
[0:46:41 – 0:46:46] Adam: Yeah, I’m going to grab one of those free papers if they don’t have the TV real estate.
[0:46:46 – 0:46:46] Adam: But I want to look.
[0:46:46 – 0:46:50] Adam: I want to find out what it costs to own one of these islands on Burntside.
[0:46:50 – 0:46:53] Erik: I’m thinking half mil gets you in the door, and who knows what you get after that.
[0:46:53 – 0:46:54] Erik: For an island?
[0:46:54 – 0:46:55] Adam: Oof, I don’t know.
[0:46:55 – 0:46:56] Adam: Probably a boathouse.
[0:46:56 – 0:46:59] Adam: One of those old boathouse footprints is worth a half mil alone.
[0:46:59 – 0:47:00] Adam: Well, that’s what I mean.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:01] Adam: I’m just saying, like, that’s entry point.
[0:47:01 – 0:47:03] Adam: Just for a boathouse and some land.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:04] Field Mic: Yeah.
[0:47:04 – 0:47:06] Adam: Do you need to have a cabin to have a boathouse?
[0:47:07 – 0:47:07] Erik: Who knows?
[0:47:07 – 0:47:09] Erik: There’s probably so many loopholes.
[0:47:09 – 0:47:10] Erik: Lackner’s got the books all cooked.
[0:47:11 – 0:47:16] Erik: And, you know, it’s just probably lawless land out there, even though they say there’s regulations.
[0:47:16 – 0:47:16] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:17 – 0:47:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:18 – 0:47:21] Adam: If you have a quiver of canoes and you keep them indoors, it’s called a shed.
[0:47:22 – 0:47:26] Adam: But if you have a quiver of motor boats and pontoons, then that’s when you upgrade to a boathouse.
[0:47:26 – 0:47:28] Adam: It’s the motors that makes the house in this case.
[0:47:28 – 0:47:30] Erik: I believe that’s an accurate statement.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:33] Erik: So, yeah, we just have a shed, you know.
[0:47:33 – 0:47:36] Adam: We got two boats in there right now, or we will once we get home.
[0:47:36 – 0:47:41] Adam: But, yeah, it’s a real eye-opener, the whole thing.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:43] Adam: All new water, you know.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:44] Adam: I did ask him.
[0:47:44 – 0:47:45] Adam: I asked old short shorts.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:49] Adam: I go, we seen a helicopter with double blades with his straw down.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:50] Adam: He knew exactly.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:53] Adam: He’s like, oh, yeah, I’ve seen them, you know.
[0:47:53 – 0:47:56] Adam: Just like that was the everyday occurrence for somebody over here on Burntside.
[0:47:56 – 0:47:57] Adam: And I go…
[0:47:57 – 0:47:58] Adam: Is there a fire or something?
[0:47:58 – 0:48:02] Adam: Like, if it was accompanied by two, like, planes and then another helicopter shows up?
[0:48:02 – 0:48:03] Adam: He’s like, not that I’ve heard of.
[0:48:03 – 0:48:04] Adam: I don’t think so.
[0:48:04 – 0:48:05] Adam: It is dry here, though.
[0:48:05 – 0:48:07] Adam: Yeah, well, what are they doing?
[0:48:07 – 0:48:11] Erik: Local legend says no fires, so we’re going to go ahead and just believe him until we hear otherwise.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:15] Adam: Yeah, he said, like, oh, it seemed a little smoky the other day, but I don’t think so.
[0:48:15 – 0:48:23] Adam: And then, oh, he informed me that the East Coast is currently inundated with bad smoke from Canada and that New York City has got its worst smoke conditions ever.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:24] Erik: Oh, wow.
[0:48:24 – 0:48:25] Erik: Currently.
[0:48:25 – 0:48:26] Adam: That’s what we missed in the news cycle.
[0:48:26 – 0:48:29] Erik: I was going to say, that’s where I prefer to get my news from.
[0:48:29 – 0:48:30] Field Mic: Old man with short shorts.
[0:48:33 – 0:48:35] Adam: Yeah, it’s a beautiful thing.
[0:48:35 – 0:48:38] Adam: And then we ran into, while we’re sitting here at the launch…
[0:48:39 – 0:48:42] Adam: Before we started recording, the irrigation guys come down.
[0:48:42 – 0:48:45] Adam: It turns out they know Eric, basically.
[0:48:45 – 0:48:46] Erik: He knows somebody.
[0:48:46 – 0:48:46] Adam: I know somebody.
[0:48:46 – 0:48:49] Erik: Yeah, the wildfire sprinklers that know somebody that I know.
[0:48:49 – 0:48:52] Erik: And he’s like, oh, I’m going over to Grand Bray next week.
[0:48:52 – 0:48:54] Erik: I’m working up on the Gunflint Trail.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:55] Erik: So it’s like, yeah, well, shit.
[0:48:55 – 0:48:56] Erik: You never know what’s going to happen out here.
[0:48:57 – 0:48:57] Adam: He was pretty cool.
[0:48:57 – 0:48:59] Adam: He was like, what’s the first on the agenda?
[0:48:59 – 0:49:01] Adam: Didn’t we see you guys early in the week?
[0:49:01 – 0:49:02] Adam: How’d the trip go?
[0:49:02 – 0:49:05] Adam: And he’s like, well, what’s the first on the agenda, a shower or a burger?
[0:49:06 – 0:49:06] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:06 – 0:49:08] Erik: And we’re sitting there drinking beers already.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:13] Erik: He knew, yeah, he knew beers, that check mark has been, uh, that box has been checked.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:13] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:22] Erik: But I, yeah, if there was a shower, I don’t know if you could, if you could have the absolute option to take one or the other, I think I’d still go burger, but there’s not really a great shower option.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:25] Erik: I’m not going to the Ely family sauna.
[0:49:25 – 0:49:26] Adam: No, I don’t think so.
[0:49:26 – 0:49:28] Adam: I just changed clothes in the outhouse down by the landing.
[0:49:28 – 0:49:28] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:29] Adam: We would.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:32] Adam: Fresh clothes makes a, makes a big world of difference for me.
[0:49:32 – 0:49:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:38] Erik: I can’t imagine when you burn those leggings and underwear, you’re probably going to release some demons into the air.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:42] Adam: I don’t want to do that too close to the house.
[0:49:42 – 0:49:44] Adam: Maybe go down and do that on the beach or something.
[0:49:48 – 0:49:50] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:49:50 – 0:49:57] Adam: We have no idea on mileage or total portages done on this trip, but I feel like we did have a lot of missions accomplished in the last four days.
[0:49:57 – 0:49:58] Adam: It’s been a real gem of a trip here.
[0:49:59 – 0:50:03] Adam: I hope we’re not blowing up the crab sector or whatever, but it’s a pretty nice little spot.
[0:50:03 – 0:50:10] Adam: And if you can manage that first portage in a little bit more intelligent way, yeah, you’re rewarded with a sand beach landing on crab.
[0:50:10 – 0:50:12] Adam: And then you got a lot of options once you get the crab.
[0:50:12 – 0:50:14] Adam: And I don’t know, I just really enjoyed our time out there.
[0:50:15 – 0:50:18] Erik: Yeah, the sidekick portion is your oyster once you just get into it.
[0:50:18 – 0:50:29] Erik: There are definitely some mega portages beyond, but you can have plenty easy-ish trip just getting past that first big one in from almost all directions.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:33] Erik: I think it’s a relatively tough section to just kind of like pop into.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:34] Erik: But once you’re in there…
[0:50:35 – 0:50:36] Erik: yeah, can’t recommend it enough.
[0:50:36 – 0:50:38] Erik: I definitely think we will be back.
[0:50:38 – 0:50:43] Erik: Um, but yeah, it’s, uh, it is, it’s a little, it’s a little sneaky entry point though.
[0:50:44 – 0:50:45] Erik: Pretty nice out there.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:50] Adam: Well, that I think leaves us when it’s time to go to Burger Town.
[0:50:50 – 0:50:55] Adam: So you have anything else for our listeners, uh, of Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast?
[0:50:55 – 0:50:58] Adam: No, I think all of my thoughts are on the table at this point.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:00] Adam: Thanks for listening.
[0:51:00 – 0:51:03] Adam: It’s been a real fun time and, uh,
[0:51:03 – 0:51:05] Adam: Shout out to everybody on the Patreon.
[0:51:06 – 0:51:06] Adam: Big fans.
[0:51:07 – 0:51:10] Adam: If you have anything to say on any of what we’ve done, we appreciate a voicemail.
[0:51:10 – 0:51:12] Adam: It’s in the show notes.
[0:51:12 – 0:51:16] Adam: Or give us an email, tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:51:17 – 0:51:18] Adam: But, yeah, we’ve got to go.
[0:51:18 – 0:51:19] Adam: I’m really hungry.
[0:51:20 – 0:51:23] Adam: As we always say on Tumble Home, every day is precious and life is a miracle.
[0:51:24 – 0:51:25] Adam: Enjoy paddling.
[0:51:25 – 0:51:26] Erik: And happy Fourth of July.
