[0:06:31 – 0:06:41] Erik: Kind of our experiences as the teams went by because inevitably what happens is you get out there, you start really excited and record a bunch.
[0:06:41 – 0:06:47] Erik: And then all of a sudden the teams start going by and you just lose track of like, did somebody pull the recorder out?
[0:06:47 – 0:06:48] Erik: Like, no.
[0:06:48 – 0:06:49] Erik: No, we didn’t.
[0:06:50 – 0:06:55] Erik: And I also don’t really know what, you know, what you would get from just hearing a dog team go by.
[0:06:55 – 0:06:57] Erik: They’re pretty quiet when they go by.
[0:06:57 – 0:07:02] Adam: They’re not like barking and… That’s some of the neatest part of it is like how sneaky they can be.
[0:07:02 – 0:07:04] Adam: Yeah, I feel like… You see them, but you don’t hear them coming.
[0:07:04 – 0:07:06] Erik: We did improve on like…
[0:07:07 – 0:07:16] Erik: Especially the first half of the, we didn’t get to experience the whole field go by, but we saw 10 teams go by over the course of.
[0:07:16 – 0:07:18] Adam: 10 out of 17 that started the race.
[0:07:18 – 0:07:20] Adam: And 13 that finished.
[0:07:20 – 0:07:21] Adam: So we missed three teams.
[0:07:22 – 0:07:23] Adam: Yeah, we had a couple scratches.
[0:07:23 – 0:07:28] Adam: But, yeah, I mean, it was a heck of a field this year in the race.
[0:07:29 – 0:07:41] Adam: And, yeah, but there’s, like, you could have, like, overlapping, like, graphs of excitement for the race and then overlaid with, like, sleep deprivation and then the quality of the, you know…
[0:07:42 – 0:07:47] Adam: the field audio that you’re going to get out of that equation pretty much explains itself.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:53] Adam: It’s just, you get, as the day goes on, you do less and less recording as you become more and more sleep deprived.
[0:07:53 – 0:07:59] Adam: And, uh, you know, and then the excitement is, you know, the first couple of teams coming through and it’s a brand new day.
[0:08:00 – 0:08:02] Adam: Usually they’re coming through early in the, in the day.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:02] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:03 – 0:08:05] Adam: And, uh, then, you know, by afternoon, uh,
[0:08:06 – 0:08:08] Adam: By afternoon, they’re so spaced out.
[0:08:09 – 0:08:10] Adam: We were blind out there.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:16] Adam: Our radio communications did not appear to be picking up the race radio.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:19] Adam: We had pushed some buttons incorrectly.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:21] Adam: We may have a visit from the FCC.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:25] Adam: It didn’t appear to be alerting us.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:32] Adam: And we had a little bit of recon with the arrival of some fresh eyes and ears in the morning.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:33 – 0:08:34] Adam: But that only can get you so much.
[0:08:34 – 0:08:38] Adam: And so, yeah, by the end of the race, it’s like, I don’t know, the next team could be four hours out.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:38] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:39] Adam: Right.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:44] Adam: You’re just sitting there slowly and slowly getting more and more tired.
[0:08:45 – 0:08:53] Adam: It is hard to keep the morale up as the sun is then starting to set later in the day, which is about where we made it the last two years.
[0:08:53 – 0:08:53] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:54 – 0:09:00] Adam: Well, let’s get out of here while we still have a little daylight and our wherewithals and wits.
[0:09:00 – 0:09:21] Erik: Yeah, and not that it’s going to for sure be a thing that happens, but we are toying with the idea of maybe just reevaluating and adjusting when to go out there and spend the night of the race basically ending and not going out the day before to get a little bit of that fresh energy carrying over the course of the day versus like…
[0:09:21 – 0:09:23] Adam: Because I didn’t sleep.
[0:09:23 – 0:09:25] Adam: I did not sleep well at all.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:27] Adam: Both years now.
[0:09:27 – 0:09:38] Adam: For one year, I tried to sleep on the Davenport and failed and got about two hours to three hours of poor sleep before being kicked awake by the groomer.
[0:09:38 – 0:09:42] Adam: And then this year, I got to bed at a reasonable time.
[0:09:43 – 0:09:53] Adam: Uh, but then like woke up at like two, you know, and Josh was already out around the fire and, uh, I couldn’t, you know, I kept rolling back and forth and I just like, couldn’t get back to bed.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:56] Adam: You know, I was, I was just up and they’re like, well, it’s, it’s Barry’s day.
[0:09:56 – 0:09:58] Adam: Like, how are you supposed to go back to bed now?
[0:09:58 – 0:09:59] Adam: So I just got up.
[0:09:59 – 0:09:59] Erik: Yeah.
[0:09:59 – 0:10:01] Adam: So again, I got maybe two hours of sleep.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:09] Erik: Yeah, I think it was like around 3.30 for me, and I just heard you guys talking, and I was just laying there like, all right, and I’m just listening to conversations laying in the tent.

[0:10:21 – 0:10:40] Adam: Maybe next year we just sleep in our own beds Monday and set an alarm so we get actually quality rest and go out there real early on Tuesday, just beat them out there, set up, and then stay the whole day so we get to see teams 12 and 13 and 14 go by because we’re always gone by then.
[0:10:40 – 0:10:46] Adam: And then if you’re sitting out there all day enjoying the refreshments, then you can just –

[0:11:37 – 0:12:00] Adam: you know get your equilibrium back about you yep it’s now thursday two days removed from race day and i’m still like still feeling a little weird you know two solid nights of sleep after and it’s still yeah i think it’s gonna be one more i need three yeah i need three good sleeps to recover fully but uh i don’t know how those mushers do it it’s crazy that’s insane so yeah um
[0:12:02 – 0:12:08] Erik: Let’s, do you want to start with the fantasy bear grease or do you want to go through who we ran into over the course of the morning?
[0:12:08 – 0:12:12] Adam: Let’s do the real bear grease and then we’ll end with the fantasy bear grease.

[0:12:13 – 0:12:14] Erik: Well, yeah.
[0:12:14 – 0:12:16] Adam: You wouldn’t have the fantasy bear grease without the real bear grease.

[0:12:19 – 0:12:39] Erik: simulation yeah simulated uh so we had um little to no knowledge um as to who we were going to run into first at the pronto roadhouse we were given a little bit of information but it was still it was close between people leaving skyport and getting to our location and a lot can happen in there

[0:12:42 – 0:12:42] Adam: Also that, yeah.
[0:12:43 – 0:12:48] Adam: We kind of knew there was kind of four teams that had sort of begun to separate on their way up to trail center.
[0:12:49 – 0:12:52] Adam: And so I would have been surprised if those four weren’t the top four at that point.
[0:12:52 – 0:12:58] Adam: But there was really six people that we felt could still win when we were like departing for camp.
[0:12:59 – 0:13:02] Adam: And they ended up being the top six through still.
[0:13:02 – 0:13:08] Adam: So, I mean, we kind of have an idea by the time they’re leaving for trail center where everybody’s kind of,
[0:13:08 – 0:13:24] Erik: lined up but yeah i mean you go out there you’re essentially going 24 hours without any real update exactly yeah and uh i think we did end up determining that i don’t think even if we could get it to work if i would want the ham radio right it is kind of fun not knowing
[0:13:24 – 0:13:27] Erik: Way more exciting because we’re right at the other side of a road crossing.
[0:13:28 – 0:13:30] Erik: So we would basically hear 30 seconds in advance.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:33] Erik: And we have such a long view down the trail.
[0:13:33 – 0:13:36] Erik: We don’t really need that much advance notice.
[0:13:36 – 0:13:42] Erik: Like we get to see them and then we still get like almost close to a minute to get like the beer, the corn dogs ready.
[0:13:42 – 0:13:43] Erik: The cash.
[0:13:43 – 0:13:44] Erik: The cash.
[0:13:44 – 0:13:48] Erik: So yeah, the first team that went through was Aaron Letstring.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:53] Erik: And she went through right around – was it 9 or was it 8?
[0:13:53 – 0:13:55] Erik: I couldn’t remember because – Yeah, I lost my notes.
[0:13:57 – 0:14:00] Erik: Somebody’s phone was like picking up Canadian time.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:02] Erik: So I think it was 9 a.m. roughly.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:06] Adam: Yeah, so they’re a little later than normal, and it turned out there’d been some slow trail.
[0:14:07 – 0:14:18] Erik: The first half of the trail, we got a report from the Sawbill checkpoint boss that the trail leading up to Sawbill, at least, was pretty greasy, wet.
[0:14:18 – 0:14:26] Erik: I mean, the day that the main part of the day on Monday was pretty, like, right around freezing, often on sun, and just, like,
[0:14:26 – 0:14:27] Field Mic Adam: You know, that greasy snow.
[0:14:28 – 0:14:28] Erik: That’s slow.
[0:14:28 – 0:14:34] Erik: But by the time they got up to our parts, the trail was in pretty amazing shape, I thought.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:37] Erik: And we had a rapid fire succession.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:43] Erik: So Aaron Letzring, Sarah Kiefer, and Ryan Reddington all came in within three minutes of each other.
[0:14:44 – 0:15:02] Erik: Um, and yeah, so we had the, the $100, uh, golden pronto pup prize, um, in an envelope thanks to, um, Jessica and I’m dropping, I’m blanking on her husband’s name, but, uh, essentially the, the, the, he got in touch last year.

[0:15:03 – 0:15:13] Erik: wanted to buy the Pronto pup lodge sign at the time, and we said, well, whatever you want to pay for it will match, and that’ll be the prize money.

[0:15:18 – 0:15:23] Adam: I’d basically drawn a corndog wearing a top hat and a bow tie on it.

[0:17:01 – 0:17:05] Adam: Yeah, you know, and, you know, that was close.
[0:17:05 – 0:17:11] Adam: Had we been 12 miles back down the trail, maybe somebody else would have been first to the roadhouse.
[0:17:11 – 0:17:15] Adam: But Aaron Letzring came around the corner, bib 13.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:16] Adam: We could see it right away.
[0:17:17 – 0:17:20] Adam: It’s a 13, and we had our bib number list out.
[0:17:20 – 0:17:27] Adam: And so we got the cash out, got out a couple corn dogs, probably one breakfast corn dog.
[0:17:27 – 0:17:29] Adam: We had the breakfast ones going early.
[0:17:29 – 0:17:31] Adam: We had a double boiler system, too, going this year.
[0:17:31 – 0:17:33] Erik: Yeah, we kept them from burning as much.
[0:17:33 – 0:17:35] Adam: Not as much char on the dogs this year.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:44] Adam: But yeah, I got out on the trail, and we didn’t know that there’s two more teams within a couple minutes right behind.
[0:17:45 – 0:17:45] Field Mic Adam: Yeah.
[0:17:45 – 0:17:50] Adam: And so we don’t want to impede anybody, especially at the top of the race.
[0:17:50 – 0:17:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:17:51 – 0:17:55] Adam: Got out there and I don’t know, somebody, we kind of were lined up.
[0:17:56 – 0:17:59] Adam: And so she got the corndogs and then I was like, you won the cash prize.
[0:18:00 – 0:18:03] Adam: And like slapped the envelope into her mitten.
[0:18:03 – 0:18:06] Adam: And somehow it still just like, it went right through her mitten.
[0:18:06 – 0:18:08] Adam: Like it was a time warp or something.

[0:18:09 – 0:18:10] Adam: It landed on the ground.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:11] Adam: And I was like, oh no.

[0:18:14 – 0:18:17] Adam: And so I like lickety split, like picked it up and turned and she had like,

[0:18:39 – 0:18:45] Adam: She had taken second by a couple seconds at the end of the race, but it didn’t end up mattering.
[0:18:45 – 0:18:51] Adam: That cash probably gave her a little extra boost, I would think, going down the final stretch.
[0:18:51 – 0:18:51] Erik: Yeah, maybe.
[0:18:52 – 0:18:54] Erik: Or maybe it was just a combination of the whole thing.
[0:18:55 – 0:19:07] Erik: You get a couple of corndogs, a bush light in you, and then right when you think you’re back into the groove of just having to be all by yourself out there on the trail, you come around the corner to the hang in there sign and you get a nice little extra boost.

[0:19:08 – 0:19:23] Adam: Yeah, so we did listen back on last year’s coverage, and one of our suggestions to ourselves in the future was that we have the sign before camp that says free beer and corn dogs ahead, well ahead, so they know what they’re getting into.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:31] Adam: A lot of the mushers had been there last year, but we had quite a few mushers that this had been their first visit to the Pronto Roadhouse.
[0:19:31 – 0:19:36] Adam: So we want to have the advertisement out there on the trail, right when you’re kind of coming around the corner where you would see like our fire.
[0:19:37 – 0:19:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:38 – 0:19:39] Adam: Oh, free beer and corndogs ahead.

[0:20:14 – 0:20:36] Adam: it was a little freaky but it was still very glittery which how i mean how freaky can glitter i only used about two to three full vials of pink glitter on this year’s artwork yeah um so yeah then our kind of our joke as they were like going away from us with their corn dogs and beer and then as they’re kind of approaching the sign like two or three of us would just yell out hey in

[0:23:16 – 0:23:25] Erik: So then close to 50 minutes after Aaron Lettsring went by, Aaron Altimus went by, who had a very fine race.
[0:23:25 – 0:23:34] Erik: It sounded like there was maybe some snafu at some point on a skyport that unfortunately may have caused her to not be as near the lead.
[0:23:34 – 0:23:35] Erik: Yeah, I was watching.
[0:23:35 – 0:23:43] Adam: I was watching the shrimp highlights from the shrimp tracker and they had some video up.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:50] Adam: Greg was like doing voiceover from Anchorage and they must have had some, they brought their HD cameras, but left the honor talent at home this year.
[0:23:50 – 0:23:56] Adam: but yeah, they had like little two or they had one little like highlight video for each day of the race.
[0:23:56 – 0:24:05] Adam: And so on day three, it was like, yeah, no, she kind of like fell off the sled and arrow wall and like picked her up and gave her a ride up until they were caught up to her team.
[0:24:06 – 0:24:08] Adam: And we had no idea about any of this.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:10] Adam: And I’m like watching this video this morning.
[0:24:11 – 0:24:16] Adam: So we went back and looked at the tracker and like, you can clearly see where it happened, like going out of Skyport.

[0:24:16 – 0:24:19] Adam: So that’s kind of scary, but luckily it seemed to have worked out.

[0:24:41 – 0:24:54] Erik: Um, she went by behind by about 50 minutes and then she finished the race and had closed in by, I think she almost only finished like 20 minutes after that pack of three in the beginning there that all finished within like five, six minutes of each other.

[0:25:25 – 0:25:29] Erik: Um, and, uh, yeah, he, well, legendary.
[0:25:29 – 0:25:35] Adam: I mean, he apparently he lended a hand in retrieving a dog team.
[0:25:35 – 0:25:37] Erik: Helped another dog team on the trail.

[0:25:39 – 0:25:43] Adam: And then, you know, still made it into Pronto Roadhouse in fifth.

[0:50:48 – 0:51:00] Erik: And I would have expected a snowshoe hare who found themselves out on the barren wasteland of an ice, icy lake, to want to get off of it very quickly.

[0:51:40 – 0:52:04] Erik: five minutes later like after it was on the opposite side of the lake a pine martin kind of was scooting along the edges of the shore and then actually did venture out onto the lake a couple of times with the follow the trail it went after it it was like oh i’m gonna go after this old hair but it will only go so far and then it saw us and kept like bouncing boy back and back and forth

[0:52:06 – 0:52:15] Erik: I couldn’t tell if it was that the Pine Martin had done that, or if it was the Pine Martin swooping in and trying to take advantage of an easier kill.

[0:52:18 – 0:52:22] Field Mic Adam: But, yeah, the hair got away, you know.
