[0:00:44 – 0:00:46] Adam: He’s playing the guitar.
[0:00:48 – 0:00:49] Adam: Maybe an accordion.
[0:00:49 – 0:00:50] Adam: We need an accordion in the band.
[0:00:50 – 0:00:53] Adam: I’ve heard it’s very hard to learn the accordion.
[0:00:53 – 0:00:56] Erik: Gotta learn those keys on the squeeze box, Eric.
[0:00:56 – 0:01:01] Erik: Welcome to Squeeze Talk, an accordion podcast.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:07] Erik: We are talking all things accordions.
[0:01:08 – 0:01:09] Erik: No.
[0:01:09 – 0:01:12] Erik: We are talking open water season activities.
[0:01:13 – 0:01:14] Erik: Where are you going?
[0:01:14 – 0:01:15] Erik: What are you heading?
[0:01:15 – 0:01:17] Erik: You got any big plans?
[0:01:17 – 0:01:18] Erik: New plans?
[0:01:19 – 0:01:40] Erik: pieces of equipment what is the meaning of life how many biters are you anticipating being needed this is the first episode that or the first one of these uh season openers that we’ve done where the ice is out and has been out it’s may 6th ice has been out for a couple of weeks there’s probably some trips that have been done
[0:01:41 – 0:01:43] Adam: Yeah, a lot of paddling going on for sure.
[0:01:44 – 0:01:46] Adam: Have you seen anybody out on Clearwater?
[0:01:46 – 0:01:47] Erik: I have not.
[0:01:47 – 0:01:49] Erik: It’s been surprisingly quiet.
[0:01:49 – 0:01:52] Erik: The public access, I’ve taken a couple of walks down there.
[0:01:52 – 0:01:57] Erik: Have not seen any actual vehicles parked, implying overnight trips.
[0:01:58 – 0:02:03] Erik: And we, as an outfitter, are not actually open until next Thursday.
[0:02:03 – 0:02:03] Erik: We’ve got a week.
[0:02:06 – 0:02:07] Adam: I’ll be.
[0:02:07 – 0:02:09] Adam: I guarantee they’re out there, though.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:09] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:02:10 – 0:02:14] Adam: I know in-laws were out paddling on Clearwater, just a big day trip.
[0:02:14 – 0:02:15] Erik: Nice.
[0:02:15 – 0:02:19] Adam: They got pretty far down there, and they said it was reported that it was quite windy.
[0:02:20 – 0:02:20] Erik: What do you know?
[0:02:20 – 0:02:22] Adam: And cold on the hand.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:25] Erik: Yes, it has still been relatively cold.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:26] Erik: The ice has gone out.
[0:02:27 – 0:02:30] Erik: We’re still in the 50s in the day and mid-20s at night.
[0:02:30 – 0:02:37] Erik: I mean, it’s not ideal, but if the water is soft, why not dip a paddle?
[0:02:38 – 0:02:41] Adam: I haven’t been in a boat yet myself, but I have been out camping.
[0:02:43 – 0:02:46] Adam: And yeah, I’ve gotten a few nights out in the tent.
[0:02:46 – 0:02:47] Adam: No hammock camping yet.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:51] Adam: I was out camping in a sleet storm a couple weekends ago.
[0:02:51 – 0:02:52] Adam: That was nice.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:55] Erik: It seems like every day there’s a little bit of a sleet storm here.
[0:02:55 – 0:02:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:02:56 – 0:02:56] Erik: This time of year.
[0:02:57 – 0:03:00] Erik: Better than accumulating snow, which we have had in the past.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:04] Erik: It’s been a relatively mild, if not amiable, spring.
[0:03:05 – 0:03:08] Erik: Has allowed us to get a lot down that Clearwater.
[0:03:08 – 0:03:09] Erik: We’re roofing.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:10] Erik: We’re sanding.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:11] Erik: We’re painting.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:13] Erik: We’re doing all the things.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:15] Erik: Will we open in time?
[0:03:17 – 0:03:17] Erik: Who knows?
[0:03:17 – 0:03:18] Erik: Who’s to say?
[0:03:18 – 0:03:18] Erik: Who’s to say?
[0:03:18 – 0:03:19] Erik: Who’s to say?
[0:03:21 – 0:03:24] Erik: We are, as always, sponsored by our fine friends on Patreon.
[0:03:25 – 0:03:26] Erik: Thank you, patrons.
[0:03:26 – 0:03:35] Erik: Thank you for listening to us talk about Love, Liza for no reason really at all.
[0:03:35 – 0:03:40] Erik: Besides a scene where there are some really crappy tents in the background of a RC boat race scene.
[0:03:43 – 0:03:44] Adam: I haven’t listened to it.
[0:03:44 – 0:03:45] Adam: I haven’t listened back.
[0:03:46 – 0:03:47] Adam: I don’t think I need to.
[0:03:48 – 0:03:50] Adam: But I thought about asking you for the link.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:54] Adam: Yeah, you usually ask me for all the other ones, but you have not asked me for the Lovelizer.
[0:03:54 – 0:04:00] Adam: I’m not a Patreon, so I have to be like, Eric, can you email me the Tumble Home Cinema Classics over to my mezzanine?
[0:04:01 – 0:04:09] Adam: But I was working the other night, and I was like, eh, I’d rather listen to Slow Burn about the debacle that was the Iraqi invasion.
[0:04:10 – 0:04:10] Adam: Ah, so…
[0:04:11 – 0:04:34] Erik: yeah yeah i don’t know uh i’ll get to it i’ll get to it eventually no it doesn’t say a lot it just i wasn’t in the right mood for it okay we just recorded it all right i’ll listen to it next week all right i thought it was a pretty good movie i thought it was well we i mean become a five dollar a month patreon and find out what grade we give it we we have a lot of scales on this show the tcc grade scale that’s out of a hundred
[0:04:36 – 0:04:36] Adam: Why is that?
[0:04:37 – 0:04:38] Adam: I got a list I started.
[0:04:38 – 0:04:40] Adam: I was going through my notebook here.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:42] Adam: The black notebook is about spent.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:45] Adam: I have to start a new one by the time we hit like one.
[0:04:46 – 0:04:54] Adam: I was going back through just getting future episode ideas kind of consolidated and then looking through some of our future TCC episode ideas.
[0:04:55 – 0:05:03] Adam: Somebody on the subreddit was suggesting we revisit the 1989 classic Always with Richard Dreyfuss as a
[0:05:03 – 0:05:21] Erik: uh scooper pilot uh with a b-17 fighting fires well we did just cover the ham lake fire series uh thank you for all of the great feedback we got on that series um yeah a little bit of a change of pace in regards to um you know the seriousness of the the whole story but we
[0:05:22 – 0:05:26] Erik: We still had some fun with it, but yeah, we’re definitely going to lighten things up.
[0:05:26 – 0:05:35] Erik: But, you know, with that just having been a series we did, we thought maybe the Tumble Home Cinema Classics for May could be…
[0:05:38 – 0:05:54] Adam: fire based movies i i am not aware of always i’m always looked really really good okay i’ve never heard of it it looks amazing is it easy enough to find somewhere i haven’t looked to where it’s available i think they have it on uh at the library on vhs
[0:05:55 – 0:06:09] Adam: But then the other one I’ve been wanting to see ever since I read the article about it in Outside Magazine was Only the Brave about the firefighter tragedy that occurred out in the desert southwest.
[0:06:10 – 0:06:15] Erik: Yeah, that one would be, again, on the serious side, I imagine.
[0:06:15 – 0:06:18] Adam: We’ll get there, but we could do a firefighting movie.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:20] Erik: We should definitely do Always.
[0:06:20 – 0:06:21] Erik: I’m looking at this cast right now.
[0:06:21 – 0:06:23] Erik: Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:25] Erik: How is Audrey Hepburn in this?
[0:06:26 – 0:06:29] Adam: I think it’s like a… John Goodman?
[0:06:29 – 0:06:36] Adam: I think she’s like a hologram in it, kind of like how they had Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, no?
[0:06:37 – 0:06:39] Erik: Yes, that was Prince.
[0:06:39 – 0:06:39] Erik: Prince.
[0:06:40 – 0:06:42] Adam: I got the Jacksons on my mind, all right?
[0:06:43 – 0:06:46] Erik: Yeah, it’s listed as romance slash fantasy.
[0:06:47 – 0:06:50] Erik: Are you sure there’s going to be much firefighting in it?
[0:06:50 – 0:06:51] Erik: No, I’m not.
[0:06:51 – 0:06:58] Adam: But somebody on the subreddit, we always try and follow up through when somebody suggests a movie for the TCC series.
[0:06:58 – 0:06:59] Adam: I’d like to get to it.
[0:06:59 – 0:07:00] Adam: I have honestly never heard of this movie.
[0:07:01 – 0:07:03] Adam: The movie poster looks incredible.
[0:07:03 – 0:07:03] Adam: It does.
[0:07:03 – 0:07:08] Adam: It involves a World War II bomber converted as a firefighting scooper.
[0:07:09 – 0:07:11] Adam: So, I don’t know, I’m intrigued for sure.
[0:07:11 – 0:07:13] Adam: So that one’s going to the top of the list right now.
[0:07:13 – 0:07:15] Adam: I got a pretty good list here started.
[0:07:15 – 0:07:24] Erik: We also have a suggestion of a 1954 action and adventure movie with Robert Mitchum and… Night of the Hunter?
[0:07:25 – 0:07:28] Erik: No, Marilyn Monroe, River of No Return.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:52] Erik: river of no return huh yeah matt calder is a rugged widower with a questionable past who decides it’s time to start a new life with his young son mark what that took a weird turn halfway through how do you take such a drastic turn just one half of the way through a sentence it’s 1954 for you yeah
[0:07:53 – 0:07:56] Adam: Yeah, Mitchum, I believe, is in Night of the Hunter.
[0:07:56 – 0:08:00] Adam: I think the kids camp and they’re in a boat while they’re hiding from the scary man.
[0:08:01 – 0:08:02] Adam: The scary man.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:05] Adam: I had to watch that in a film class back in the day.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:07] Adam: I had to.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:08] Adam: I got to.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:11] Adam: Night of the Hunter, I think, is on the top 100 for sure.
[0:08:12 – 0:08:13] Adam: On what list?
[0:08:14 – 0:08:15] Adam: Top films of all time.
[0:08:15 – 0:08:16] Erik: Not on the AFI list.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:19] Adam: All those idiots that do not understand the play of Shadow.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:20] Erik: Is it not an American film?
[0:08:20 – 0:08:21] Erik: Yeah, it is.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:22] Erik: Oh, well.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:23] Erik: Anyways.
[0:08:23 – 0:08:24] Adam: Just didn’t make the cut.
[0:08:24 – 0:08:26] Adam: River of No Return and Night of the Hunter.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:28] Adam: That could be our double feature for like July.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:29] Erik: Ooh, double feature.
[0:08:29 – 0:08:30] Adam: I’m going to put it on the list.
[0:08:30 – 0:08:31] Adam: Any other suggestions out there?
[0:08:32 – 0:08:33] Erik: Well, yes, there is one.
[0:08:33 – 0:08:42] Erik: I don’t know if I necessarily want to drop it right now, but it was somebody that… Kind of going off of the fact that it’s maybe up there…
[0:08:44 – 0:08:52] Erik: Considering the level of references that we make on the show to movies that we’ve seen, we’ve done Zissou.
[0:08:52 – 0:09:00] Erik: We’ve done the Greg and Wirt over the garden wall, which are two big ones.
[0:09:00 – 0:09:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:09:01 – 0:09:12] Erik: But I would say up in that top five of movies and or shows that we reference the most, Big Lebowski was suggested.
[0:09:12 – 0:09:13] Erik: We just go ahead and do it.
[0:09:13 – 0:09:14] Erik: Wow.
[0:09:14 – 0:09:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:15 – 0:09:16] Adam: It doesn’t have to be like a four-parter.
[0:09:17 – 0:09:21] Erik: Well, they suggested that we do one just based on our remembrance.
[0:09:22 – 0:09:22] Erik: Don’t even watch it?
[0:09:23 – 0:09:24] Erik: Just based on our memory.
[0:09:24 – 0:09:25] Erik: That’s the word.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:26] Erik: Not remembrance.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:29] Erik: Based on our memory and then do one after we watch it.
[0:09:30 – 0:09:37] Adam: Yeah, there’s so many little details in that movie that I am aware of now that I don’t know if I would need to watch it again.
[0:09:38 – 0:09:41] Adam: I could easily talk about The Big Lebowski for an hour or two.
[0:09:41 – 0:09:42] Erik: no problem.
[0:09:42 – 0:09:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:09:43 – 0:09:54] Erik: And then the other one that would probably, this wasn’t suggested, but just going off of like heavy hitter references that we make, like doing Fargo at some point probably has to happen to the list too.
[0:09:55 – 0:09:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:56 – 0:09:57] Adam: I like that.
[0:09:57 – 0:10:00] Adam: The, uh, Denny from love Liza was the landlord from big Lebowski.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:03] Adam: I don’t know how much we talked about this in the love Liza episode.
[0:10:03 – 0:10:03] Erik: A little bit.
[0:10:03 – 0:10:04] Erik: I love Denny.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:07] Erik: I got my, uh, my program.
[0:10:07 – 0:10:08] Erik: Sure.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:08] Erik: Mean a lot to me.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:10] Erik: If you could come and, uh, give me notes.
[0:10:12 – 0:10:15] Adam: His dance sequence in The Big Lebowski, I mean, it’s really on par.
[0:10:15 – 0:10:17] Adam: Like, he could be Denny, you know?
[0:10:18 – 0:10:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:18 – 0:10:20] Adam: I don’t think they ever give the landlord’s name.
[0:10:20 – 0:10:21] Adam: They think they might.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:24] Adam: See, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Big Lebowski.
[0:10:24 – 0:10:25] Adam: I’m a little rusty.
[0:10:25 – 0:10:31] Erik: It seems like those movies couldn’t, like, they seem like they exist in roughly the same time frame.
[0:10:31 – 0:10:37] Adam: Yeah, like he could be Denny from Love, Liza could be the landlord of Jeffrey Lebowski as well.
[0:10:39 – 0:10:47] Adam: He’s into exotic dance performance and camping and RC racing.
[0:10:47 – 0:10:52] Erik: But doesn’t the landlord from the Big Lebowski, he lives in LA, right?
[0:10:53 – 0:10:53] Erik: Yeah, that’s true.
[0:10:54 – 0:10:55] Erik: Not then.
[0:10:55 – 0:10:58] Erik: Well, I think that that’s roughly around the same time, like late 90s, early 2000s.
[0:10:59 – 0:11:03] Erik: Because Denny from Love Liza, they live in like Mobile, Alabama.
[0:11:03 – 0:11:08] Adam: Maybe his run in with Philip Seymour Hoffman just made him like, you know what, I’m going to move to the ocean.
[0:11:09 – 0:11:11] Erik: And then Philip Seymour Hoffman also ran.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:12] Erik: Brand.
[0:11:13 – 0:11:16] Erik: The last scene from Love, Liza where he’s just walking down the street.
[0:11:16 – 0:11:17] Adam: She’s a free spirit.
[0:11:17 – 0:11:18] Adam: We love her very much.
[0:11:20 – 0:11:27] Erik: He somehow got involved in the assistant game and is working for a rich philanthropist somehow.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:29] Erik: They’re all connected there.
[0:11:29 – 0:11:30] Adam: They’re all connected.
[0:11:31 – 0:11:34] Erik: Well, this is going to be a two-part series on the season at large.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:40] Erik: We’ve decided we’re not going to hide that fact from you where we say we’re going to get it in all at once.
[0:11:40 – 0:11:41] Erik: No, it’s not going to be.
[0:11:42 – 0:11:43] Erik: So you’ve got two weeks of…
[0:11:46 – 0:11:49] Erik: Everybody else’s thoughts and their plans coming at you.
[0:11:50 – 0:11:51] Erik: Ours will be in part two.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:54] Adam: We’ll talk about our… Everybody knows we’re going to Lake One.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:56] Adam: I already…
[0:11:56 – 0:12:01] Adam: I traded in some of my Dogecoin and I acquired some edibles on the Silk Road.
[0:12:01 – 0:12:03] Erik: So they’re…
[0:12:04 – 0:12:08] Adam: They’re being mailed to me in this discreet package labeled as art supplies.
[0:12:08 – 0:12:10] Adam: And we’ll have them in time for that trip.
[0:12:10 – 0:12:12] Adam: So I have never done edibles before.
[0:12:12 – 0:12:14] Adam: I can’t wait to find out.
[0:12:14 – 0:12:16] Adam: Hopefully we don’t get arrested, Eric.
[0:12:16 – 0:12:17] Adam: We’re going to be escorted from the park.
[0:12:17 – 0:12:18] Adam: No, we’re not.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:20] Adam: We’ll at least make it to Lake 2.
[0:12:20 – 0:12:21] Adam: Make it hard for them to find us.
[0:12:21 – 0:12:23] Erik: What do you think that whole situation looked like?
[0:12:23 – 0:12:24] Erik: All right, you guys have to leave.
[0:12:25 – 0:12:29] Erik: Then they get into canoes all like, I’m assuming, hammered and messed up.
[0:12:29 – 0:12:30] Adam: Yeah, it would have been hilarious.
[0:12:30 – 0:12:33] Adam: No, I’m only half joking.
[0:12:34 – 0:12:38] Adam: I don’t know about what part, but we’re definitely doing Lake One entry point later this month.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:39] Adam: It’s coming up.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:41] Adam: Only like 20, not even 20 days.
[0:12:42 – 0:12:42] Erik: It’s crazy.
[0:12:42 – 0:12:49] Erik: I didn’t even realize when I booked that permit that it was the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend because Memorial Day weekend is extremely late this year.
[0:12:49 – 0:12:49] Adam: It’s really late.
[0:12:49 – 0:12:53] Adam: Yeah, I feel a little bad that I’m going to be missing out on that at work, but not that bad.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:55] Adam: That’s what PTO is for.
[0:12:56 – 0:12:57] Adam: Sorry, it’s already in the system.
[0:12:57 – 0:12:58] Adam: Can’t take it back.
[0:12:58 – 0:12:59] Adam: No take back sees.
[0:12:59 – 0:12:59] Adam: I’m going to like one.
[0:13:00 – 0:13:02] Adam: I got a few other things off the Silk Road.
[0:13:02 – 0:13:04] Adam: I’m not going to talk about it on this podcast.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:06] Adam: Stay tuned for the… Maybe in part two.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:07] Erik: Well, in the field.
[0:13:07 – 0:13:09] Adam: In the field recordings, we’ll share.
[0:13:09 – 0:13:12] Adam: So that episode, oh boy, that trip is going to be four nights.
[0:13:13 – 0:13:17] Adam: And so that means at least five episodes of field recording coming out.
[0:13:17 – 0:13:21] Erik: Longest trip ever I think we’ve ever taken since Connecticut, right?
[0:13:21 – 0:13:22] Adam: We got a lot to say about that.
[0:13:23 – 0:13:26] Erik: Even the big trip last year was still only three nights.
[0:13:26 – 0:13:27] Erik: Yeah, we’ve been pulling some three-nighters.
[0:13:28 – 0:13:28] Erik: Four?
[0:13:28 – 0:13:30] Erik: No.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:31] Adam: We might never come back.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:32] Adam: They have to fend for themselves at work.
[0:13:33 – 0:13:35] Adam: I’m going out in the park.
[0:13:35 – 0:13:37] Adam: So we’ll talk more about that in part two.
[0:13:37 – 0:13:40] Adam: I would say we’ll probably start with the Facebook.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:45] Adam: We’ve still got a handful of people on Facebook that are friends of the show.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:50] Adam: And then get into the subreddit responses.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:55] Adam: I glanced at the post and it looked to have about 300 messages on there.
[0:13:55 – 0:13:58] Adam: I know a lot of those are replies, but I did not open it.
[0:13:58 – 0:13:59] Adam: I’m a little scared to open that.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:05] Erik: Well, we have, of course, if you’re listening, Hopalicious, I know you are.
[0:14:05 – 0:14:10] Erik: You had to wait until the 14th minute to get to this week’s sponsorship.
[0:14:11 – 0:14:24] Erik: And this is a little bit of a goof on our part, but I feel like it’s going to good service, even more so than what the suggested usage for this sponsorship was.
[0:14:25 – 0:14:26] Erik: This is from Brad.
[0:14:27 – 0:14:29] Erik: He has sponsored us in the past.
[0:14:29 – 0:14:35] Erik: He is a longtime listener and also a longtime patron of Clearwater Lodge.
[0:14:36 – 0:14:37] Erik: And he dropped this off last August.
[0:14:39 – 0:14:47] Erik: This is a 15, almost now 16-year-old single malt scotch whiskey from The.
[0:14:47 – 0:14:50] Erik: It’s like the football guys.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:51] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:51 – 0:14:53] Erik: It’s not just Glenlivet.
[0:14:53 – 0:14:54] Erik: It’s The Glenlivet.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:55 – 0:14:57] Erik: It’s like the Ohio State University.
[0:14:57 – 0:14:59] Erik: The Brad Levitt.
[0:14:59 – 0:15:00] Erik: The Brad Levitt.
[0:15:02 – 0:15:03] Adam: Super fan.
[0:15:03 – 0:15:05] Erik: The Glenn LeVay.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:08] Erik: Single malt scotch whiskey, 15 years.
[0:15:08 – 0:15:10] Erik: This is a French oak reserve.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:11] Erik: Ooh, boy.
[0:15:11 – 0:15:16] Erik: This was earmarked, according to Brad, for the Pronto Pup Lodge.
[0:15:17 – 0:15:23] Erik: But, you know, see, when I got this, I stored it in outfitting, and that outfitting got buried.
[0:15:23 – 0:15:24] Erik: It’s aged 16 years now.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:30] Erik: So, sorry, Brad, totally forgot to bring this out to ProntoPup, but if you’ve listened to the episode…
[0:15:30 – 0:15:30] Adam: Didn’t need it.
[0:15:31 – 0:15:32] Adam: We were doing just fine.
[0:15:32 – 0:15:38] Adam: We didn’t need it to waste this beautiful brown liquor on our dumb heads.
[0:15:39 – 0:15:47] Adam: So, we’re going to pour a couple, three, four, two tree fingers worth and sip on it like gentlemen here today and…
[0:15:48 – 0:16:12] Adam: studio k2 and then the rest of you is gonna come out with us on our pairs well with uh dude with uh mango gummy on lake three you guys can try and find us out there you’re not gonna be able to keep up because we paddle fast even though i’m probably i’m at this point we got to get out and at least do a warm-up paddle i played tennis the other day
[0:16:13 – 0:16:17] Erik: Yeah, somebody reported that they saw you guys out on the tennis court.
[0:16:17 – 0:16:17] Erik: I was like, what?
[0:16:17 – 0:16:18] Erik: Are you sure?
[0:16:18 – 0:16:23] Adam: I haven’t played tennis in like 12 years, and I’m like, Adrian, we got to go play some tennis after work.
[0:16:23 – 0:16:24] Adam: We got Barb out there.
[0:16:24 – 0:16:25] Adam: We’re shooting them around.
[0:16:25 – 0:16:25] Adam: Cheers.
[0:16:26 – 0:16:26] Adam: Cheers.
[0:16:28 – 0:16:29] Adam: Cheers to you, Brad.
[0:16:32 – 0:16:32] Adam: The Brad.
[0:16:35 – 0:16:35] Adam: Wow.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:36] Adam: That’s fine.
[0:16:37 – 0:16:37] Adam: That’s…
[0:16:40 – 0:16:43] Erik: I’m going to give that 7 out of 5 forehand winners.
[0:16:44 – 0:16:48] Erik: That’s some smooth stuff there.
[0:16:49 – 0:16:50] Erik: French oak.
[0:16:51 – 0:16:51] Erik: Yeah.
[0:16:51 – 0:16:52] Erik: It’s the finest of oaks.
[0:16:52 – 0:16:54] Erik: A little sweetness to it.
[0:16:56 – 0:17:02] Erik: Yeah, so the 15-year Glenn Livet is going to sponsor this episode.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:06] Erik: It might sponsor the next because… Oh, yeah, maybe.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:06] Erik: Spoiler.
[0:17:07 – 0:17:08] Erik: We’re doing two today.
[0:17:08 – 0:17:12] Erik: We’re going to just hit stop and then record another episode.
[0:17:12 – 0:17:13] Erik: That’s how you do it.
[0:17:13 – 0:17:15] Erik: That’s how the magic happens.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:18] Erik: That’s what they call the old flip-em-up.
[0:17:18 – 0:17:20] Erik: It’s a podcasting thing.
[0:17:20 – 0:17:20] Erik: You wouldn’t understand.
[0:17:20 – 0:17:24] Adam: Yeah, well, Eric has his master’s degree in podcastology.
[0:17:24 – 0:17:25] Adam: He’s learned it.
[0:17:25 – 0:17:30] Adam: Today’s Ron and Cher Outdoor Calendar Fact of the Day for May 6th, 2021.
[0:17:31 – 0:17:33] Adam: Steelhead Run peaks North Shore.
[0:17:33 – 0:17:35] Adam: Sunset is at 825 p.m. Fire danger is high.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:35] Adam: And…
[0:17:42 – 0:17:42] Adam: Steelhead or myth?
[0:17:43 – 0:17:43] Adam: I’m going to go ahead and say that.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:47] Adam: Ron Cher is full of baloney.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:53] Adam: I did take a moment to stop and chuck a few casts on the way over here.
[0:17:54 – 0:17:54] Adam: Nothing.
[0:17:54 – 0:17:55] Adam: I’m still skunked, Eric.
[0:17:56 – 0:17:59] Adam: Sad and I’m a little embarrassed.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:01] Adam: I’m a little mad, if I’m being honest.
[0:18:01 – 0:18:05] Adam: And I’m starting to think, you know, what the heck did I do?
[0:18:07 – 0:18:07] Erik: Do they exist?
[0:18:07 – 0:18:08] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:14] Adam: Does anybody just not like me anymore?
[0:18:16 – 0:18:17] Erik: Well, I mean, at least the steelhead don’t.
[0:18:18 – 0:18:18] Adam: They don’t.
[0:18:18 – 0:18:19] Adam: I don’t think they’re out there.
[0:18:20 – 0:18:26] Adam: Even the fishermen in town said strange reports for this time of year.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:27] Adam: They said the currents have shifted.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:31] Adam: The Menominee, they’re not out there like they should be.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:33] Erik: I’ve seen the Menominee flags.
[0:18:33 – 0:18:35] Adam: We did get some fresh Menominee in today.
[0:18:35 – 0:18:36] Adam: But…
[0:18:38 – 0:18:58] Adam: yeah they’re not getting them like they should uh it’s been a weird year out there for fishing not just for me but for the professionals so i’m not gonna take it too personal that this is four straight springs in which i’ve been unable to land a steelhead um but anyways the season is peaking now so that means i still got some time yeah according to ron shara
[0:18:59 – 0:19:00] Adam: Yeah, I think the season’s a little early this year.
[0:19:01 – 0:19:08] Adam: Normally the peak would be about now, but I think it’s a little past peak already just based on my trucks per bridge calibration.
[0:19:09 – 0:19:17] Adam: I see a lot of bridges and I see a lot of streams, but the trucks, they’re just a little fewer and far between the last couple of days.
[0:19:18 – 0:19:20] Adam: So I’m thinking we’re past peak, but I don’t know.
[0:19:20 – 0:19:20] Adam: They’re still out there.
[0:19:21 – 0:19:27] Erik: Yeah, you never really can tell, but yeah, it seems like the weekends, there’s still a lot of old waiter boys out there.
[0:19:28 – 0:19:29] Adam: Yeah, you know, it’s fun, though.
[0:19:29 – 0:19:31] Adam: I haven’t caught a damn steelhead.
[0:19:32 – 0:19:39] Adam: But it’s fun to see how I basically stop at the same couple streams, you know, and cast, bombing them into the lake.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:44] Adam: And it’s fun to see how, like, the streams, like, change in the way that they reach the big lake.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:47] Adam: Like the final confluence.
[0:19:47 – 0:19:49] Adam: You know, it’s always kind of shifting day by day.
[0:19:50 – 0:19:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:50 – 0:19:51] Adam: I found a cool agate today.
[0:19:51 – 0:19:52] Adam: Like a monster.
[0:19:52 – 0:19:53] Adam: Like fist size agate.
[0:19:54 – 0:19:54] Erik: Boom.
[0:19:54 – 0:19:55] Adam: Shakalaka.
[0:19:55 – 0:19:56] Erik: Fist size?
[0:19:57 – 0:19:57] Erik: No.
[0:19:58 – 0:19:58] Erik: I need to see this.
[0:19:58 – 0:20:00] Erik: It’s the biggest, biggest in my head.
[0:20:00 – 0:20:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:01 – 0:20:05] Adam: Uh, no, it wasn’t, it’s not that big, but it was like, it was a pretty impressive agate.
[0:20:05 – 0:20:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:05 – 0:20:09] Erik: I mean, that’s, uh, I mean, for me at least that’s half the fun.
[0:20:09 – 0:20:09] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:10 – 0:20:18] Adam: Um, you know, it was a beautiful day to be out on the, on the shore wearing my muckies and, uh, bombing some big old spoon.
[0:20:19 – 0:20:21] Erik: So, uh, do you have the extra tufts yet?
[0:20:22 – 0:20:45] Adam: no i don’t they’re all the talk they’re all the rage in town yeah they’re that’s they’re so hot right now uh no my the monkeys i have they’re perfect for this time of year it’s not too hot yet and they’re still waterproof and i’m not gonna just get rid of them so i’m definitely in the market though and i threw my next time i’m re-upping on boot i’m definitely uh i’ll be thinking about it but uh
[0:20:46 – 0:20:47] Erik: Yeah, they’re holding up.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:51] Erik: My front toe on the sole had come undone.
[0:20:52 – 0:20:58] Erik: So like when you were walking through like especially slushy snow, it would slowly pack in under your foot.
[0:20:58 – 0:21:00] Erik: So then it felt like you were walking on a rock.
[0:21:01 – 0:21:03] Adam: Yeah, I might have a lot of glue and duct tape on them at this point.
[0:21:03 – 0:21:04] Adam: No doubt.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:09] Adam: I mean, they got one more good spring in them, but I’m thinking by next fall I’m going to be in the boot market for sure.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:14] Adam: I’m going to give this the Glenn Livet 15.
[0:21:15 – 0:21:17] Adam: Are there different years of Livet, I assume?
[0:21:18 – 0:21:20] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:21:20 – 0:21:20] Adam: Yeah.
[0:21:20 – 0:21:23] Adam: I’m going to give this 7 out of 5 Swansons.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:28] Erik: Yeah, we should be hacking into some kind of a large steak right now.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:33] Adam: Speaking of meat, let’s get into the meat.
[0:21:33 – 0:21:37] Adam: I got to fact check before we get to the don’t throw the meat on the grill.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:39] Erik: Did you just make me tease the meat?
[0:21:39 – 0:21:41] Erik: You just sizzled the meat a little bit.
[0:21:41 – 0:21:43] Adam: Pull it off the grill.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:45] Adam: Because I got a serious fact check.
[0:21:45 – 0:21:47] Adam: I had to write this one down to make sure I get it right.
[0:21:47 – 0:21:57] Adam: So on last week’s episode, I erroneously reported that Janet Jackson’s 1993 smash hit album was titled It, or I’m sorry, If.
[0:21:58 – 0:21:58] Adam: Oh, Jesus.
[0:21:58 – 0:21:59] Adam: Fact checked on the fact check.
[0:22:01 – 0:22:03] Adam: I said the album was titled If.
[0:22:04 – 0:22:09] Adam: In fact, the hit single If was track on the album.
[0:22:10 – 0:22:11] Adam: It was a self-titled release, Eric.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:12] Adam: Janet.
[0:22:13 – 0:22:20] Erik: Yeah, I’m not saying that I didn’t believe you at the time, but when you were talking about that, I was like, I don’t remember that album.
[0:22:20 – 0:22:22] Erik: I don’t remember an album called If.
[0:22:22 – 0:22:26] Adam: Yeah, no, If was a single, and I don’t know what I was talking about.
[0:22:26 – 0:22:29] Adam: I knew what I was talking about at the time, but then I was listening to it again.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:42] Adam: I’m pretty sure, no, the album and the world tour, which was a phenomenal show I saw with my mother at the Summerfest Grounds in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, they were both self-titled.
[0:22:42 – 0:22:45] Adam: Janet and Janet World Tour.
[0:22:45 – 0:22:46] Adam: Uh-huh.
[0:22:46 – 0:22:51] Adam: That said, though, I ran into another Tumble homie and Janet Jackson fan, Cody.
[0:22:52 – 0:22:55] Adam: He argued that Rhythm Nation is the superior album.
[0:22:56 – 0:22:59] Adam: And I was listening to it the other day, and I think I agree.
[0:23:00 – 0:23:05] Adam: One could also argue, Eric, that 1997’s Velvet Rope was the pinnacle of Janet Jackson’s career.
[0:23:05 – 0:23:10] Adam: The genre-bending album is one of the defining LPs of the 1990s.
[0:23:10 – 0:23:10] Adam: Wouldn’t you agree?
[0:23:11 – 0:23:13] Erik: Yeah, I guess I would, Patrick Bateman.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:15] Adam: Both commercially and artistically.
[0:23:17 – 0:23:20] Adam: Together Again is an undisputed masterpiece.
[0:23:20 – 0:23:24] Adam: It is hard to choose a favorite among so many amazing tracks.
[0:23:24 – 0:23:33] Adam: Its universal message crosses all boundaries, instills one with the hope that it is not too late to better ourselves.
[0:23:35 – 0:23:36] Erik: That was beautiful.
[0:23:36 – 0:23:38] Erik: I love that…
[0:23:38 – 0:23:39] Erik: When are we doing that movie?
[0:23:40 – 0:23:40] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:23:40 – 0:23:43] Erik: I’m putting it on the list for sure.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:44] Erik: I love his…
[0:23:44 – 0:23:47] Erik: He also has great commentary on… You have a Whitney Houston album?
[0:23:48 – 0:23:49] Erik: CD?
[0:23:50 – 0:23:52] Erik: Genesis and Phil Collins.
[0:23:53 – 0:23:54] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:23:54 – 0:23:54] Erik: Yeah.
[0:23:54 – 0:23:56] Erik: They’re a greatly underappreciated album.
[0:23:57 – 0:23:57] Erik: Duke.
[0:23:57 – 0:23:58] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:23:58 – 0:24:01] Erik: He also really likes Huey Lewis and the News.
[0:24:01 – 0:24:02] Erik: Oh, for sure.
[0:24:03 – 0:24:05] Adam: All right, American Psycho is definitely on the list.
[0:24:05 – 0:24:10] Adam: Anyways, shout out to Cody, huge Jackson fan, and thanks for listening.
[0:24:11 – 0:24:18] Erik: Yeah, Janet Jackson doesn’t necessarily do it for me all that much, but I can appreciate it as a music fan.
[0:24:18 – 0:24:24] Adam: This is why I didn’t want to listen to the Love Lies episode the other night at work, because I was listening to all the Janet Jackson albums of the 90s.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:28] Adam: I’d say all three of her albums from the 90s, those are probably the top three.
[0:24:30 – 0:24:31] Adam: Top three albums from the 90s?
[0:24:31 – 0:24:33] Adam: No, just of Janet Jackson’s career.
[0:24:33 – 0:24:34] Adam: Oh, yeah, yeah, probably.
[0:24:34 – 0:24:35] Adam: Her three 90s albums.
[0:24:36 – 0:24:38] Adam: Well, see, fact-checked again.
[0:24:39 – 0:24:39] Adam: Rhythm Nation was 1989.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:42] Adam: You get what I’m saying.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:46] Adam: Those three were in a row, though, and that was really like she was just hitting it.
[0:24:47 – 0:24:49] Adam: What’s Janet Jackson up to these days?
[0:24:51 – 0:24:51] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:52] Adam: You think she’s a tumble homie?
[0:24:53 – 0:24:55] Erik: She’s 54, born in Gary, Indiana.
[0:24:56 – 0:24:56] Erik: Of course.
[0:24:56 – 0:25:05] Adam: If so, Janet, if you’re listening, if you’re a social media, recovering social media user, you can email us, tumblehome at gmail.com.
[0:25:06 – 0:25:07] Adam: Is it tumblehomecast at gmail.com?
[0:25:07 – 0:25:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:25:09 – 0:25:10] Erik: Tumble Home Cast.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:11] Erik: She never emailed the show.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:15] Erik: Yeah, Janet’s a good album.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:16] Erik: I do remember that one.
[0:25:17 – 0:25:18] Erik: We’re not going to get into this.
[0:25:19 – 0:25:21] Adam: Control is really good, too.
[0:25:21 – 0:25:22] Adam: I’d shout out Control as well.
[0:25:22 – 0:25:24] Adam: But yeah.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:26] Adam: She’s the most successful Jackson, right?
[0:25:27 – 0:25:28] Erik: Absolutely.
[0:25:29 – 0:25:31] Erik: Why can’t we name another one?
[0:25:31 – 0:25:34] Erik: I’ve never heard of them.
[0:25:34 – 0:25:38] Erik: Yeah, well, can we cut that meat now?
[0:25:39 – 0:25:41] Adam: All right, yeah, take it out of the marinade.
[0:25:42 – 0:25:46] Erik: Maybe we’ll have a Janet Jackson chiptune.
[0:25:47 – 0:25:48] Adam: I was hoping so, yeah.
[0:25:48 – 0:25:52] Adam: I was looking to see if I could find a chiptune version of Together Again.
[0:25:52 – 0:25:53] Erik: Well, there we go.
[0:25:53 – 0:26:00] Erik: Let’s put it out to our chiptune master in chief, Matt.
[0:26:02 – 0:26:04] Erik: Maybe not in time, obviously, for this episode.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:08] Erik: That would be weird if somehow he was able to get this before it comes out.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:08] Adam: Maybe by part two.
[0:26:09 – 0:26:10] Erik: Part two, though.
[0:26:10 – 0:26:11] Adam: Part two, you got two weeks.
[0:26:11 – 0:26:14] Erik: Yeah, I don’t think that that has been chiptuned.
[0:26:14 – 0:26:15] Erik: And that is one of the requirements.
[0:26:16 – 0:26:20] Erik: And I’m sure it would make his wife’s eyes roll, which is another requirement.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:23] Adam: Just read her what I said about the song.
[0:26:23 – 0:26:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:26] Erik: Speaking of Matt and the meat, let’s start with him.
[0:26:27 – 0:26:31] Erik: He sent us an email on his 2021 open water season plans.
[0:26:31 – 0:26:32] Erik: Are you ready?
[0:26:32 – 0:26:32] Erik: I’m ready.
[0:26:32 – 0:26:33] Adam: Hit it.
[0:26:34 – 0:26:36] Adam: Wait, wait.
[0:26:37 – 0:26:38] Adam: Let’s get to the meat.
[0:26:39 – 0:26:40] Erik: That was pretty bad.
[0:26:40 – 0:26:42] Erik: That was okay.
[0:26:42 – 0:26:42] Erik: That’s all right.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:43] Erik: Let’s do it.
[0:26:44 – 0:26:47] Erik: Matt’s got three open water trips scheduled.
[0:26:47 – 0:26:48] Erik: Man.
[0:26:48 – 0:26:51] Erik: These guys and their multi-trip deals.
[0:26:51 – 0:26:59] Erik: Trip one, first week of June, Brule to Winchell or Vernon with the wife for our six-year wedding anniversary.
[0:27:00 – 0:27:04] Erik: We have moved five times and had two kids since getting married.
[0:27:05 – 0:27:07] Erik: Yikes, the five-time moving thing.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:09] Erik: I’m kind of like halfway moving right now.
[0:27:10 – 0:27:11] Erik: How many tubs does that take?
[0:27:11 – 0:27:12] Erik: How many, yeah.
[0:27:12 – 0:27:13] Adam: How do people move before tubs?
[0:27:14 – 0:27:15] Adam: Before plastic bins?
[0:27:15 – 0:27:17] Erik: I think it was all cardboard boxes and tape.
[0:27:18 – 0:27:19] Adam: Crazy.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:20] Adam: Can you imagine?
[0:27:20 – 0:27:21] Erik: It’s just absolutely nuts.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:23 – 0:27:26] Erik: This will be our first trip alone since our honeymoon.
[0:27:27 – 0:27:29] Erik: Seriously, don’t ever have kids or careers if you can help it.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:31] Erik: Wow.
[0:27:31 – 0:27:34] Erik: Well, I hope your wife isn’t a listener or your child.
[0:27:35 – 0:27:37] Erik: This will be my wife’s first trip to the BWCA.
[0:27:37 – 0:27:38] Erik: Well, that’s awesome.
[0:27:39 – 0:27:39] Erik: Man.
[0:27:40 – 0:27:46] Erik: Trip two, mid-August, with dad, brother, and some buddies, taking the John Deere loop.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:47] Erik: I like the naming of that.
[0:27:47 – 0:27:53] Erik: Heading from John Lake into Pine, targeting Johnson Falls via Aldrin Canoe.
[0:27:53 – 0:27:59] Erik: This will be a first attempt for all six of us to earn our level one Fento badge.
[0:27:59 – 0:28:00] Adam: Got to make sure you actually go to Deere.
[0:28:01 – 0:28:02] Erik: Yes, the John Deere one.
[0:28:02 – 0:28:05] Adam: Make sure you get the Primo campsite on Deere for their final night.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:08] Adam: One of my favorites.
[0:28:08 – 0:28:09] Erik: One of those Primo sites on Deere.
[0:28:10 – 0:28:12] Adam: It’s the Primo site on Deere.
[0:28:14 – 0:28:21] Erik: Trip three, dad accidentally, that’s in quotes, purchased a second John Lake permit for late September while planning trip number two.
[0:28:21 – 0:28:21] Erik: Oops.
[0:28:22 – 0:28:23] Erik: Oopsie.
[0:28:23 – 0:28:28] Erik: After gaining full approval from the wives, we’re booked for five more days in the park.
[0:28:28 – 0:28:29] Erik: I’m really looking forward to this one.
[0:28:30 – 0:28:33] Erik: The solo time with dad in the park will be tough to beat.
[0:28:33 – 0:28:34] Erik: Yes.
[0:28:34 – 0:28:35] Erik: Also late September.
[0:28:36 – 0:28:38] Erik: That is a chef’s kiss.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:39] Erik: Time of year.
[0:28:41 – 0:28:43] Erik: New Tumble Home-inspired gear for this season.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:44] Erik: Platypus gravity filter.
[0:28:45 – 0:28:46] Erik: FU pump.
[0:28:48 – 0:28:50] Erik: Kirkland knockoff Helinox chair.
[0:28:50 – 0:28:55] Erik: Wine in bag for all Cook County-related day trips moving forward.
[0:28:56 – 0:28:57] Erik: Cheers, Matt.
[0:28:58 – 0:28:59] Erik: Sounds like some great trips.
[0:29:00 – 0:29:01] Erik: Mostly on the east side.
[0:29:01 – 0:29:06] Erik: A couple of Vento-focused trips with that accidental John thing.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:07] Adam: I like that.
[0:29:07 – 0:29:09] Adam: I’ve never heard of the accidentally.
[0:29:09 – 0:29:11] Adam: I don’t know if I believe that or not on that one.
[0:29:12 – 0:29:12] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:29:12 – 0:29:13] Adam: John, are you listening?
[0:29:13 – 0:29:15] Adam: That was a full month off.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:18] Adam: Is it the same exact date both months?
[0:29:18 – 0:29:19] Adam: Then I guess I’d believe it.
[0:29:19 – 0:29:21] Adam: Didn’t get any exact dates.
[0:29:21 – 0:29:22] Adam: It goes close.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:23 – 0:29:24] Adam: That’s plausible.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:32] Erik: I believe that was the only recovering social media user.
[0:29:34 – 0:29:57] Erik: response that we got in the form of emails so we can move on oh no no yes never mind that’s it i’m sure there’s one in there that i’m missing and i will find it and it’ll be in part two moving on to facebook it’s been a while since we’ve heard from our face book friends starting at the top there with ted
[0:29:58 – 0:30:00] Adam: We’re not saying the last names, right?
[0:30:00 – 0:30:01] Adam: I don’t think so.
[0:30:01 – 0:30:01] Adam: We don’t need to.
[0:30:01 – 0:30:03] Adam: You can go on Facebook and check it out.
[0:30:06 – 0:30:10] Adam: I’ve heard Facebook is really good at their privacy, although they wouldn’t violate it.
[0:30:11 – 0:30:13] Adam: Definitely, we won’t violate it.
[0:30:13 – 0:30:14] Adam: We won’t read last names.
[0:30:16 – 0:30:18] Adam: Yeah, when was the last time we had Facebook on the show, Eric?
[0:30:18 – 0:30:19] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:30:20 – 0:30:21] Adam: How do you work this scrolly boy here?
[0:30:22 – 0:30:22] Erik: Two fingers.
[0:30:22 – 0:30:23] Adam: Do not scroll.
[0:30:23 – 0:30:24] Adam: Just read.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:26] Adam: All right.
[0:30:27 – 0:30:28] Adam: Ted is up.
[0:30:28 – 0:30:29] Adam: Ted’s first on the show.
[0:30:32 – 0:30:32] Adam: Zero likes?
[0:30:33 – 0:30:33] Adam: How is this possible?
[0:30:34 – 0:30:36] Adam: Are they just in order of the…
[0:30:37 – 0:30:39] Erik: In the order that they were received, more or less?
[0:30:39 – 0:30:40] Adam: I’m rusty.
[0:30:40 – 0:30:41] Adam: I’m rusty.
[0:30:41 – 0:30:42] Erik: Don’t try to think about how Facebook works.
[0:30:42 – 0:30:43] Erik: Just read.
[0:30:43 – 0:30:44] Erik: Just read the damn comment.
[0:30:46 – 0:30:47] Adam: Ted Zuck’s on the show.
[0:30:47 – 0:30:48] Adam: Welcome to the show, Ted.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:53] Adam: Early June trip to base camp and fish in the Alder Canoe Lake area.
[0:30:53 – 0:30:56] Adam: Probably take a day trip to Johnson Falls while we are there.
[0:30:57 – 0:31:01] Adam: Our camp cook couldn’t make it this year, so I am taking a stab at all the meal planning.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:02] Adam: Wish me luck.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:03] Adam: Good luck, Ted.
[0:31:03 – 0:31:03] Adam: Good luck.
[0:31:04 – 0:31:12] Adam: Fall trip up the Gunflint, staying at a lodge and taking some BWCA rookies out on some day trips to introduce them to this great place.
[0:31:12 – 0:31:13] Adam: Love it.
[0:31:13 – 0:31:14] Adam: I love it.
[0:31:14 – 0:31:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:31:14 – 0:31:16] Adam: You’re definitely going to Johnson Falls.
[0:31:16 – 0:31:17] Adam: What is this maybe stuff, Ted?
[0:31:18 – 0:31:19] Adam: Early June, Johnson Falls.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:20] Adam: Thumbs up.
[0:31:20 – 0:31:22] Adam: I’m going to give him a thumbs up.
[0:31:22 – 0:31:23] Adam: I can like it.
[0:31:23 – 0:31:24] Adam: I just liked it.
[0:31:24 – 0:31:24] Adam: All right.
[0:31:24 – 0:31:25] Adam: You can do that?
[0:31:25 – 0:31:25] Erik: Yep.
[0:31:25 – 0:31:29] Erik: I have the ability to just provide one like.
[0:31:30 – 0:31:30] Erik: No more.
[0:31:31 – 0:31:32] Erik: No less.
[0:31:33 – 0:31:35] Erik: Well, yes, I could not like it, and that would be less, I suppose.
[0:31:36 – 0:31:37] Adam: Well, I could go like it, too.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:41] Erik: You could, but you’d have to figure out how to get your Facebook account reactivated.
[0:31:42 – 0:31:42] Adam: Where did it go?
[0:31:43 – 0:31:50] Erik: William, starting at Moose Lake, getting a tow to Basswood, then following the border all the way to Lac La Croix.
[0:31:50 – 0:31:56] Adam: Make sure you get yourself some either Canadian or American apparel to wrap that border out.
[0:31:56 – 0:32:03] Erik: Yeah, make sure you stop at some of those sap processing islands up on Lac La Croix.
[0:32:03 – 0:32:04] Erik: Look for red pines.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:06] Erik: Look for some scars.
[0:32:07 – 0:32:09] Erik: I know I will the next time I’m up on LLC.
[0:32:09 – 0:32:09] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:14] Erik: Having never been west of Moose before, this is all new territory for me.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:18] Erik: That’s some Christmas morning vibes there, that new territory.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:20] Adam: Especially that new territory.
[0:32:20 – 0:32:21] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:21 – 0:32:22] Adam: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:32] Erik: Warrior Hill, which probably won’t allow you to do the run-up, but at least you can see it, and you can probably sidle up under those pictograph cliffs.
[0:32:32 – 0:32:40] Erik: I think that’s still probably, maybe somewhat frowned upon, but you’re in a canoe like 40 yards off the border.
[0:32:40 – 0:32:43] Adam: Just cover up your canoe serial number.
[0:32:43 – 0:32:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:43 – 0:32:45] Adam: Just go ahead and put some duct tape over that thing.
[0:32:45 – 0:32:48] Adam: Yeah, as a Bajewaters pod… Don’t let the birds see in that.
[0:32:48 – 0:32:52] Erik: As a Bajewaters podcast, I think we are officially saying don’t do that, but…
[0:32:53 – 0:32:55] Adam: Yeah, I was joking.
[0:32:55 – 0:32:57] Erik: Yeah, our lawyer just texted.
[0:32:57 – 0:33:04] Adam: Our attorney, who we did rehire, our derelict attorney even, said that was terrible advice.
[0:33:04 – 0:33:07] Adam: He seems to have straightened things out.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:11] Adam: I think he’s right on the straight path again.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:18] Erik: Yeah, he’s always listening in, and he just sent us that gif of Jonah Hill doing that, like, nod with the cutout on the neck.
[0:33:18 – 0:33:19] Erik: Like, no, no, no.
[0:33:19 – 0:33:19] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:20 – 0:33:24] Erik: Yeah, so no, do not go anywhere, even on the water, into Canada.
[0:33:24 – 0:33:25] Erik: But still, Lac La Croix.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:27] Adam: Don’t even think about it.
[0:33:27 – 0:33:28] Erik: Even the American side.
[0:33:29 – 0:33:30] Erik: Topps.
[0:33:30 – 0:33:30] Erik: Pretty neat.
[0:33:31 – 0:33:32] Erik: It’s Topps.
[0:33:32 – 0:33:39] Erik: He’s looking to catch the Grand Slam, find a brook trout lake, and see the chairs on Gaby.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:41] Erik: Gaby Oniquette.
[0:33:42 – 0:33:43] Adam: I’m a little salty.
[0:33:43 – 0:33:46] Adam: We missed the Gaby Oniquette.
[0:33:46 – 0:33:50] Erik: 23-day solo with an open end as far as exit point.
[0:33:50 – 0:33:50] Adam: What?
[0:33:51 – 0:33:56] Erik: Yeah, that’s the joy of having a garment in reach and a wife willing to meet me at whatever end.
[0:33:57 – 0:33:59] Erik: This guy’s got a dream scenario.
[0:33:59 – 0:34:02] Erik: He’s got a wife just willing to meet him at any entry point that he ends up at.
[0:34:05 – 0:34:12] Erik: The idea of an open-ended trip like that, I have not experienced since the days of Quetico, where it was just like, hmm, this looks cool.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:13] Erik: Let’s go down this way.
[0:34:13 – 0:34:21] Adam: I assume there’s people out there at these in-reaches now who are just like texting in like shopping lists and just calling in airdrops.
[0:34:21 – 0:34:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:24] Erik: Well, I met William last year.
[0:34:24 – 0:34:27] Erik: I know he’s retired and he paid his dues.
[0:34:28 – 0:34:29] Erik: He’s allowed to do this.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:31] Erik: But some of these kids these days, they just like…
[0:34:32 – 0:34:33] Erik: Does anybody work anymore?
[0:34:34 – 0:34:36] Erik: Everybody just seems to be on vacation.
[0:34:37 – 0:34:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:34:38 – 0:34:43] Adam: There’s like 100 places and things I want to do, and I might get to get a couple of them in this year.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:45] Adam: It doesn’t feel like there’s never enough time off.
[0:34:46 – 0:34:46] Erik: No.
[0:34:47 – 0:34:52] Erik: I mean, I’m going to cherish literally my five days off the first five days in June.
[0:34:52 – 0:34:56] Adam: I assume everybody’s just like stacked with PTO after a year not traveling.
[0:34:57 – 0:35:01] Adam: And now they’re burning it up in April and just doing whatever, going on five trips.
[0:35:02 – 0:35:04] Adam: It’s like I would too if I had that much stacked.
[0:35:04 – 0:35:12] Erik: It could be even worse this year because last year it was like, okay, there’s some people that are just still working, but then there’s everybody that just literally can’t work.
[0:35:13 – 0:35:19] Erik: And now it’s like also those people who can’t work or are fine just being paid unemployment.
[0:35:19 – 0:35:26] Erik: And then everybody who had to work last year who now is going to take advantage of like a bunch of backlogged vacation days.
[0:35:26 – 0:35:27] Erik: Yeah.
[0:35:28 – 0:35:29] Erik: Can’t wait.
[0:35:29 – 0:35:33] Erik: I’ve got one more week before the slaughter begins.
[0:35:34 – 0:35:35] Erik: I’ve got you queued up there.
[0:35:36 – 0:35:36] Erik: Thanks.
[0:35:36 – 0:35:37] Erik: Do I sound excited?
[0:35:37 – 0:35:39] Erik: Yeah, I’m pumped.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:41] Adam: I’m not fretting.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:42] Adam: I’m not going to fret.
[0:35:42 – 0:35:43] Adam: It’s all going to be fine.
[0:35:43 – 0:35:43] Adam: You can’t fret.
[0:35:44 – 0:35:46] Adam: You know, life is precious, Eric.
[0:35:47 – 0:35:47] Adam: Every day is a miracle.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:49] Erik: Life is a miracle.
[0:35:49 – 0:35:50] Adam: Andy knows this.
[0:35:50 – 0:35:51] Adam: Andy’s next on the show.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:52] Adam: Duncan to Clearwater.
[0:35:52 – 0:35:54] Adam: Hopefully we can survive the long portage.
[0:35:56 – 0:36:15] Adam: you’ll be fine it’s mostly flat just uh try not to double portage it we will have day trips hiking the border out trail with some fishing mixed in hopefully last year it was like 106 degrees most of our trips so the motivation to explore was low fingers crossed for the great sight looking at the cliffs at rose lake
[0:36:16 – 0:36:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:17 – 0:36:17] Adam: Good luck to that.
[0:36:18 – 0:36:21] Erik: I stayed at that one last year on a guided trip.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:22] Adam: Wow.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:23] Erik: He did your job.
[0:36:24 – 0:36:26] Erik: I’m assuming are the cliffs he’s referring to.
[0:36:27 – 0:36:30] Adam: Yeah, just as the cliffs at Rose Lake.
[0:36:30 – 0:36:30] Adam: So, yeah.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:32] Adam: I know.
[0:36:32 – 0:36:33] Erik: We all know the ones.
[0:36:33 – 0:36:35] Erik: Man, these are all Eastsiders.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:44] Erik: It almost feels like there might be some kind of an effect that we may have had on people over the last couple of years.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:46] Erik: It’s skewing to the east.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:46] Erik: East.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:49] Adam: You know, when they zig, though, we got to zag.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:52] Adam: Everybody’s going for the Vento this year.
[0:36:53 – 0:36:55] Adam: We’ll be over in the quiet Lake 2 area.
[0:36:55 – 0:36:56] Erik: Just docile.
[0:36:58 – 0:37:01] Erik: Nobody’s getting freaked out on edibles.
[0:37:02 – 0:37:05] Adam: We will get the site on Lake 2, I think.
[0:37:06 – 0:37:06] Adam: The site?
[0:37:07 – 0:37:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:37:07 – 0:37:09] Adam: There’s like one site.
[0:37:09 – 0:37:16] Erik: We’ll talk about it in part two or maybe some plans for how we’re going to stage that trip.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:19] Erik: But I would prefer not to camp on Lake 1.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:26] Adam: Yeah, I mean, we were going in at like 9 a.m. We better not camp on Lake 1.
[0:37:26 – 0:37:27] Erik: Let’s wrap it up.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:27] Erik: Okay.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:29] Erik: Just call it a day here.
[0:37:29 – 0:37:29] Erik: Yeah, that looks good.
[0:37:30 – 0:37:32] Erik: Josh, four trips this year.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:37] Erik: Memorial Day weekend with coworkers from Missing Link to Lil Sag.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:47] Erik: Long June fishing trip with my sons from Little Indian Sioux North through Oyster, LLC, Iron and Crooked.
[0:37:47 – 0:37:48] Erik: Hey, that’s where we were last year.
[0:37:49 – 0:37:53] Erik: I can’t give you any suggestions on fishing because we didn’t really catch any fish.
[0:37:53 – 0:37:56] Erik: But from what I’ve heard, they’re out there.
[0:37:57 – 0:37:59] Erik: We did have some decent fishing on.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:00] Erik: Oh, shoot.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:02] Erik: I’m totally dropping the ball on that walleye.
[0:38:03 – 0:38:26] Adam: pocket pocket yeah how can i never how can i never remember pocket there’s good walleye redemption yeah that was we we got them there middle campsite on pocket slip bobbers and leeches that was sick yeah that’s a very reminiscent of tip ripper island out on south arm and it’s never not worked the one time we were there it’s bad it’s a perfect spot perfect
[0:38:27 – 0:38:32] Erik: Also goes on, he’s got an August trip with daughters to Caribou from Clearwater.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:40] Erik: And then a September solo into Little Gabbro, Bald Eagle, and maybe the Kawishawi Triangle.
[0:38:42 – 0:38:42] Erik: Nice.
[0:38:44 – 0:38:47] Erik: Yeah, that’s on like all great trips.
[0:38:49 – 0:38:54] Erik: I think the least familiar I am summer paddling wise is the Little Gabbro and Bald Eagle area.
[0:38:55 – 0:38:59] Erik: I’ve only traversed those lakes with ice on them.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:02] Erik: I’ll do one more because then you can finish up with the last two.
[0:39:02 – 0:39:04] Erik: This one’s from Tom.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:07] Erik: 62 to caribou to find some smallies.
[0:39:08 – 0:39:12] Erik: Highly unlikely that you will not find smallies on caribou.
[0:39:12 – 0:39:13] Erik: You’re going to get them.
[0:39:13 – 0:39:16] Erik: The only question is, how many 20-inchers are you going to get?
[0:39:16 – 0:39:20] Erik: Yeah, I was going to say, there’s some slabs over there.
[0:39:20 – 0:39:21] Erik: Or slobs.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:22] Erik: Slob-os?
[0:39:22 – 0:39:23] Erik: Slob-os.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:25] Erik: Footballs.
[0:39:25 – 0:39:27] Erik: Some little footballs.
[0:39:30 – 0:39:31] Adam: What the heck’s that?
[0:39:31 – 0:39:32] Adam: We’re being haunted.
[0:39:33 – 0:39:34] Adam: We are being haunted.
[0:39:34 – 0:39:36] UNKNOWN: Update Adobe Flash Player.
[0:39:36 – 0:39:37] Adam: What’s that?
[0:39:37 – 0:39:38] Adam: Did you hear something?
[0:39:38 – 0:39:39] Adam: That was super weird.
[0:39:40 – 0:39:42] Adam: It’s like a whistling noise in the studio here.
[0:39:43 – 0:39:46] Adam: Next up on the show, friend of the show, Ben.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:48] Adam: I’m not sure if he’s actually a friend of the show.
[0:39:48 – 0:39:49] Adam: Are you a friend, Ben?
[0:39:49 – 0:39:50] Adam: He likes us.
[0:39:50 – 0:39:51] Adam: All right.
[0:39:51 – 0:39:52] Adam: He’s a friend.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:53] Adam: Ben.
[0:39:53 – 0:39:54] Erik: Definitely not a foe.
[0:39:55 – 0:39:56] Erik: What are you up to, Ben?
[0:39:56 – 0:39:57] Adam: Oh, I’m sorry.
[0:39:58 – 0:40:02] Adam: Ben’s going to IMA Thomas the week before Memorial Day.
[0:40:03 – 0:40:07] Adam: So, for sure, shoot us a message on how Thomas was.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:09] Erik: The week before Memorial Day.
[0:40:09 – 0:40:10] Adam: If you get back before we leave.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:16] Erik: It’s probably going to be, based on when the ice has gone out, probably right about prime time Laker.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:17] Adam: Pretty good, I bet.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:40:20 – 0:40:26] Adam: And closing out the Facebook segment as Anthony, next on the show.
[0:40:27 – 0:40:28] Adam: Welcome, Anthony.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:31] Adam: Entry point 64 for my first trip ever.
[0:40:31 – 0:40:32] Adam: Wow.
[0:40:32 – 0:40:32] Adam: Ding, ding, ding.
[0:40:32 – 0:40:34] Adam: Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:40:34 – 0:40:35] Adam: East Bearskin.
[0:40:35 – 0:40:36] Erik: Pew, pew, pew.
[0:40:36 – 0:40:40] Adam: Doing the loop out to Pine and the stop at Johnson Falls.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:40] Adam: Can’t wait.
[0:40:41 – 0:40:42] Adam: I’m very excited.
[0:40:42 – 0:40:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:40:44 – 0:40:45] Erik: It gives me chills.
[0:40:45 – 0:40:49] Erik: Bless yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:51] Adam: I mean, Johnson Falls.
[0:40:52 – 0:40:53] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:40:53 – 0:40:54] Adam: Yeah, that’s going to be awesome.
[0:40:56 – 0:40:58] Adam: A couple mentions for Johnson Falls.
[0:40:58 – 0:41:01] Adam: Definitely a few shout-outs for new water and new territory.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:05] Adam: I think that’s the early theme of…
[0:41:05 – 0:41:06] Adam: of the show.
[0:41:06 – 0:41:09] Adam: And that doesn’t have the theme of like all new open water seasons.
[0:41:09 – 0:41:14] Adam: You know, you’re kind of like, Hey, what, where can we get to this year that we haven’t been able to check out yet?
[0:41:15 – 0:41:16] Adam: Isn’t that what you’re always really trying to do?
[0:41:16 – 0:41:17] Adam: Yes.
[0:41:17 – 0:41:22] Erik: The excitement of fresh territory coloring in the map.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:48] Adam: yeah but there’s something to be said about like knowing where you’re going and like especially you know i got a good couple fishing spots in here or or something like that you know the comfort of knowing where you’re going is also there but um at least for me i’m pumped for that new water yeah you got a lot of new water a lot for me too i’ve never been on the number chain i’ve been up through like alice and thomas and kind of back around but it’s been yeah you’ve never been to free air either
[0:41:49 – 0:41:51] Erik: Never been to Timberfree Air.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:53] Erik: That’s the other trip we’re taking this year.
[0:41:53 – 0:41:54] Adam: Oh, that’s for sure on there.
[0:41:54 – 0:41:56] Adam: I got a short list, and that one’s on there.
[0:41:56 – 0:41:57] Erik: You bring the biters.
[0:41:58 – 0:41:58] Erik: I’ll be there.
[0:42:01 – 0:42:01] Adam: Glen Levitt.
[0:42:02 – 0:42:03] Adam: The Glen Levitt.
[0:42:03 – 0:42:06] Adam: This stuff’s almost too smooth.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:06] Erik: Yep.
[0:42:07 – 0:42:18] Erik: Can’t wait to bring the rest of this bottle out in a Boundary Waters U.S. Forest Service Ranger approved, Barry Huber approved plastic container.
[0:42:19 – 0:42:20] Erik: Huber report.
[0:42:20 – 0:42:21] Erik: Huber report.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:29] Adam: You know, the timber-free air trip we’re going to do in, like, jean shorts and, you know, old hoodies.
[0:42:30 – 0:42:40] Adam: But we should also do an Agent Cooper kind of, like, FBI trip where we just do a trip in, like, three-piece suits with sharp-looking ties and, like, slick our hair back.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:42] Erik: Sure.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:44] Erik: I mean, we could do whatever we want.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:46] Adam: We could, like, pretend to be the men in black.
[0:42:47 – 0:42:51] Erik: Not the movie, but the black-eyed kids associated.
[0:42:51 – 0:42:58] Adam: Yeah, we should get those black contacts and then dress up like Agent Cooper and just do a trip like that sometime.
[0:42:58 – 0:43:00] Adam: Costume trips.
[0:43:00 – 0:43:02] Adam: I’m going to put that on the list for future episode ideas.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:03] Adam: Costume trips.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:04] Erik: Costume trips.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:08] Adam: I mean, we’ve dressed in costume while camping, but do an entire theme.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:10] Adam: Not on a portage.
[0:43:11 – 0:43:15] Erik: No, I remember, I think we’ve told this story on the show.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:17] Erik: I think I’ve told all my stories.
[0:43:17 – 0:43:19] Erik: Listeners out there, you know everything about me.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Erik: I have no stories anymore.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:26] Erik: So if you’re looking for new ones, you just have to wait for me to physically create them.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:27] Erik: Except for the ones that are mine.
[0:43:28 – 0:43:29] Erik: That’s how we’ve always done it.
[0:43:29 – 0:43:30] Erik: You’ll never get those.
[0:43:31 – 0:43:33] Erik: But I remember we were driving through Death Valley.
[0:43:33 – 0:43:34] Erik: You were there.
[0:43:34 – 0:43:35] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:35] Erik: The freaks.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:37] Erik: And we were out in the middle of nowhere.
[0:43:37 – 0:43:37] Erik: Miles.
[0:43:38 – 0:43:39] Erik: I meant the freaks.
[0:43:39 – 0:43:40] Erik: I meant that in the nicest possible way.
[0:43:40 – 0:43:41] Erik: Well, it was freaky.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:47] Erik: Because all of a sudden, we came across a tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:43:47 – 0:43:48] Erik: If you know the story on…
[0:43:48 – 0:43:50] Erik: If anybody’s got any information out there on this, we need to know.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:57] Erik: What this would possibly mean, it is just honestly like Death Valley.
[0:43:57 – 0:43:58] Erik: If you’ve been, you know.
[0:43:58 – 0:43:58] Erik: It’s vast.
[0:43:58 – 0:44:07] Erik: You get out there 10 miles off the pavement onto any of those dirt roads, and it is just a vast wasteland of dirt and no water.
[0:44:07 – 0:44:10] Erik: And we were out there heading out to some dunes.
[0:44:11 – 0:44:15] Erik: And all of a sudden on the horizon, here come these little blips coming towards us.
[0:44:15 – 0:44:23] Erik: And all of a sudden we kind of slow down and pull over because it is a group of like six or seven people on mountain bikes.
[0:44:23 – 0:44:25] Erik: They weren’t even like nice mountain bikes.
[0:44:25 – 0:44:26] Erik: Well, no, they weren’t.
[0:44:26 – 0:44:34] Erik: They were like Schwinn single speed, single chain almost bikes, which would be kind of weird enough on its own.
[0:44:34 – 0:44:35] Adam: The bikes were kind of shabby.
[0:44:36 – 0:44:42] Erik: But the weirdest part was that they were all decked out in Prohibition era suits.
[0:44:43 – 0:44:45] Erik: What were the flappers?
[0:44:45 – 0:44:48] Erik: They were dressed very well.
[0:44:49 – 0:44:51] Erik: Yeah, there was a handsome crew.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:53] Erik: It was a little too handsome.
[0:44:53 – 0:44:57] Erik: Yeah, and it was like blazing hot, middle-of-the-day sun, and they just went biking by.
[0:44:57 – 0:45:00] Erik: Yeah, they just waved, casual.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:01] Erik: They didn’t need help.
[0:45:01 – 0:45:02] Erik: They seemed like they knew what they were doing.
[0:45:03 – 0:45:04] Adam: Yeah, it was bizarre.
[0:45:04 – 0:45:06] Erik: Yeah, so that would be fun.
[0:45:06 – 0:45:09] Adam: I’d forgotten all about that, but yeah, kind of like that.
[0:45:09 – 0:45:11] Adam: Except for we get the black contacts.
[0:45:11 – 0:45:14] Adam: I’ve always wanted to try those on ever since Carnival.
[0:45:14 – 0:45:15] Adam: Anybody out there remember Carnival?
[0:45:15 – 0:45:17] Erik: I’ve always wanted to try those on ever since the…
[0:45:18 – 0:45:20] Adam: They’re not camping so much as RV camping and carnival.
[0:45:20 – 0:45:24] Erik: Ever since the Limp Bizkit bassist.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:25] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:26] Adam: He was real crazy.
[0:45:27 – 0:45:30] Adam: I mean, I never looked into this, but I assume they’re not that expensive these days.
[0:45:31 – 0:45:32] Erik: No, probably not.
[0:45:32 – 0:45:35] Erik: I would just have to get over the idea of putting a finger in my eye.
[0:45:36 – 0:45:38] Erik: You don’t wear contacts.
[0:45:38 – 0:45:40] Erik: I have been blessed with good vision.
[0:45:41 – 0:45:42] Adam: Freak.
[0:45:42 – 0:45:43] Erik: You freak.
[0:45:43 – 0:45:43] Erik: Freak.
[0:45:45 – 0:45:48] Erik: Do we want to move on to a couple of comments off of the subreddit?
[0:45:49 – 0:45:50] Erik: We can do a few here.
[0:45:51 – 0:45:51] Erik: We’ve got time.
[0:45:52 – 0:45:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:45:52 – 0:45:58] Erik: And the top upvoted folks should get their due diligence.
[0:45:59 – 0:46:00] Erik: I don’t even know if that makes sense.
[0:46:00 – 0:46:06] Erik: But they should get mentioned on episode one of the open water season question of the week.
[0:46:06 – 0:46:12] Erik: Moving on to Tumble Homecast on Reddit.
[0:46:12 – 0:46:13] Erik: Have you seen this?
[0:46:13 – 0:46:14] Erik: You heard about this Reddit website?
[0:46:15 – 0:46:19] Erik: Only a couple of weeks ago, we were trying to pump the numbers to get up over 400.
[0:46:19 – 0:46:20] Erik: We’re already at 445.
[0:46:22 – 0:46:23] Erik: Let’s get to 500 by June.
[0:46:25 – 0:46:26] Adam: Where are all these people coming from?
[0:46:26 – 0:46:27] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:29] Erik: But I will eat a hat.
[0:46:29 – 0:46:31] Adam: You’re going to eat a hat.
[0:46:31 – 0:46:33] Erik: I’ll eat that hat off of your head.
[0:46:33 – 0:46:35] Erik: It deserves to be retired from usage.
[0:46:35 – 0:46:36] Adam: I just washed this one.
[0:46:36 – 0:46:37] Erik: I can tell.
[0:46:37 – 0:46:38] Adam: It’s pearly white.
[0:46:40 – 0:46:43] Adam: Yeah, you don’t get to eat this hat, but Eric has to eat a hat if we get to 500.
[0:46:43 – 0:46:51] Erik: If we get to 500 by June, I will take a very sharp knife and fork and eat part of the bill off of your hat.
[0:46:51 – 0:46:55] Adam: Why don’t you just carve a tiny little hat out of a carrot or something?
[0:46:55 – 0:46:58] Erik: No, I need to physically eat a hat.
[0:46:58 – 0:46:58] Erik: All right.
[0:46:59 – 0:47:00] Erik: You know, you’ve heard that statement.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:01] Erik: I want to see somebody actually eat a hat.
[0:47:01 – 0:47:04] Adam: So you don’t think we’re going to get there or you want to eat a hat?
[0:47:05 – 0:47:07] Erik: I’m just saying I think it’s incentive.
[0:47:08 – 0:47:09] Erik: It sure is.
[0:47:09 – 0:47:11] Erik: 55 people to watch me eat part of a hat.
[0:47:12 – 0:47:12] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:47:12 – 0:47:16] Adam: You could just do something sensible like I’ll just wear a mustache.
[0:47:17 – 0:47:19] Adam: I’ll just cut off my beard and only have a mustache.
[0:47:19 – 0:47:22] Erik: That’s way more… That’s way less sensible than eating a hat.
[0:47:23 – 0:47:25] Erik: I’ve had a beard for like…
[0:47:26 – 0:47:27] Erik: I don’t even…
[0:47:27 – 0:47:29] Erik: I don’t think Tori has ever like touched my chin.
[0:47:30 – 0:47:30] Erik: See?
[0:47:30 – 0:47:31] Erik: Finger to skin.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:35] Adam: That makes it even better than first time ever.
[0:47:36 – 0:47:37] Adam: Mustache.
[0:47:37 – 0:47:38] Adam: First mustache ever.
[0:47:38 – 0:47:41] Adam: I’ll shave down to a mustache and I’ll eat a hat.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:42] Erik: I just really want to eat a hat.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:43] Adam: All right.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:44] Adam: You can eat the hat too.
[0:47:44 – 0:47:45] Adam: Jesus.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:46] Adam: Sorry, but not this one.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:47] Adam: I like this hat.
[0:47:47 – 0:47:49] Adam: Well, you can choose.
[0:47:49 – 0:47:50] Adam: I got a different hat you can eat.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:51] Adam: Okay.
[0:47:51 – 0:47:52] Adam: I’ll find you a better hat to eat.
[0:47:52 – 0:47:53] Erik: If we get to 500 members.
[0:47:53 – 0:47:54] Erik: That’s a deal.
[0:47:54 – 0:48:02] Erik: On Tumble Homecast, I will eat a hat of Adam’s choosing and shave my beard down to just a mustache.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:03] Adam: This is great.
[0:48:03 – 0:48:05] Adam: Yeah, let’s make it happen, folks.
[0:48:05 – 0:48:10] Adam: Okay, that’s 55 people in 25 days.
[0:48:10 – 0:48:14] Adam: People are just going to make second accounts to do it now.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:15] Adam: You’re definitely eating a hat.
[0:48:16 – 0:48:18] Erik: I have the ability to look into that.
[0:48:18 – 0:48:19] Erik: Oh, really?
[0:48:19 – 0:48:19] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:21] Adam: I’ve never checked out the mod tools once.
[0:48:22 – 0:48:25] Erik: Yeah, I think I’m close to stripping you of your mods.
[0:48:25 – 0:48:27] Erik: You didn’t bring anything to the table as a mod.
[0:48:28 – 0:48:39] Erik: i’m active i just don’t i don’t know how the mod stuff works yeah well you are on there you do contribute but uh in terms of not enough modding not enough it’s here
[0:48:40 – 0:48:43] Erik: The open water season is upon us and it’s that time of year.
[0:48:44 – 0:48:53] Erik: And we would love to hear from all of you about where you’re heading and what your BWCA slash Q, probably not though, plans are.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:55] Erik: Is it a multi-trip deal?
[0:48:56 – 0:48:56] Erik: Something new?
[0:48:57 – 0:48:59] Erik: How much beer will you be dropping off at Clearwater?
[0:49:00 – 0:49:03] Erik: We would love to try and answer any questions if you’ve got them.
[0:49:04 – 0:49:05] Erik: This isn’t an AMA thing.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:08] Erik: I just figured if you’re heading into an area that we’ve been…
[0:49:09 – 0:49:39] Adam: be happy to lend any advice if we have it i’ll do my best yeah guy just emailed me today it was like a guy i know buddy buddy buddy is emailing he’s like doing this uh mountain trip where he’s got to get water from a stream asking about walter filtration walter filtration or water who would want to filter out the walters yeah no you want those keep the walters uh yeah there’s those good questions out there what’s the newest gear yep how’s she going by
[0:49:39 – 0:49:43] Erik: How’s she going, my cheap underscore dancer?
[0:49:44 – 0:49:46] Erik: Top voted comment.
[0:49:48 – 0:49:52] Erik: This year’s trip, I’m finally going to find out which is better.
[0:49:53 – 0:49:54] Erik: Wet slash dry foot.
[0:49:55 – 0:49:57] Erik: Left foot will be a muck boot.
[0:49:58 – 0:50:01] Erik: Right foot will be a chaco for the duration of the trip.
[0:50:01 – 0:50:03] Erik: May the best foot win.
[0:50:04 – 0:50:06] Adam: This is one of those freak scenarios.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:11] Adam: This is like somebody’s going to see this and then 10 years later be like, what was that all about?
[0:50:11 – 0:50:12] Adam: Still never knew.
[0:50:13 – 0:50:14] Adam: Is it serious?
[0:50:14 – 0:50:14] Adam: I wouldn’t know.
[0:50:15 – 0:50:16] Erik: It’s cheap to answer.
[0:50:16 – 0:50:17] Erik: You know it’s not serious, but I would love to see proof.
[0:50:18 – 0:50:18] Erik: He got me.
[0:50:18 – 0:50:19] Erik: Proof where it didn’t happen.
[0:50:20 – 0:50:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:50:21 – 0:50:27] Adam: Can you switch back and forth so, like, right foot gets a little cold, you can switch them up?
[0:50:28 – 0:50:31] Adam: Or you got to stay with the one foot on each the whole way?
[0:50:32 – 0:50:35] Erik: It doesn’t say when the trip was happening.
[0:50:35 – 0:50:39] Erik: So, you know, if it’s mid-season.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:45] Erik: You could probably just keep them on the same feet and not really ever notice a difference.
[0:50:46 – 0:50:48] Erik: But if it’s early season, you could maybe get a cold foot.
[0:50:49 – 0:50:50] Erik: I don’t really get cold feet.
[0:50:50 – 0:50:54] Erik: I’ve seen that mentioned a few different places about the wet foot niche.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:50:55 – 0:51:02] Erik: And I mean, it’s just a foot and it’s only for like 30 seconds or a minute, even if it’s a couple of minutes.
[0:51:03 – 0:51:04] Erik: I don’t like…
[0:51:04 – 0:51:06] Erik: It does not affect me…
[0:51:07 – 0:51:35] Adam: For the duration To be in cold water for a little bit Honestly I think a lot of times It kind of feels good It’s like a natural air conditioning Yeah and my feet are nasty little hot toasters So I like to cool them off as much as possible Get them out of the boot Get them in the water Yeah I more and more That’s another reason to get rid of the muck boots And go to a lighter boot Because it’s like more and more It’s just like whatever Just go to the astrals Yeah
[0:51:38 – 0:52:02] Adam: want to move on next up on the show acid diarrhea 612 friend of the show good to hear from you acid diarrhea 612 my family and i have a sawbill permit for mid-june i wanted to see the underbelly of the bwca as opposed to the gunflint area but our old dog is becoming rather helpless so i’m afraid we will likely have to put the canoeing with him on hold
[0:52:04 – 0:52:07] Adam: But we did purchase 25 acres in Cook County.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:08] Adam: Holy moly.
[0:52:09 – 0:52:17] Adam: Which was largely inspired by the podcast, so we’ll probably be doing some serious border route and superior hiking trips with some day paddles here and there.
[0:52:17 – 0:52:19] Adam: The old doggy should be good on foot.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:25] Adam: But either way, we’re pumped to stake our claim just south of the park itself and maybe call ourselves locals soon.
[0:52:25 – 0:52:30] Adam: All right, go ahead and take my extra upvote, and you can just call yourself a local.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:30] Erik: Nice.
[0:52:31 – 0:52:32] Adam: Right away.
[0:52:32 – 0:52:41] Erik: You have to produce at least two lines of kin, and then maybe your grandchildren can be referred to as locals.
[0:52:41 – 0:52:43] Adam: Well, that is the actual answer, yes.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:44] Erik: Unfortunately.
[0:52:44 – 0:52:45] Erik: Unfortunately.
[0:52:45 – 0:52:49] Adam: But, you know, if I see you in town twice, then, yeah, you’re probably local.
[0:52:49 – 0:52:50] Erik: Well, to me, yes.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:59] Erik: But to actual locals, like, I think you need a road named after you before you get to be allowed to be accepted as a true local.
[0:52:59 – 0:53:02] Adam: You can tell if somebody lives here by how dusty the car is usually.
[0:53:04 – 0:53:05] Erik: That, for sure.
[0:53:05 – 0:53:08] Adam: The dustier, the more local.
[0:53:09 – 0:53:12] Adam: I would say that is probably a good way to judge it, but…
[0:53:13 – 0:53:35] Adam: uh you know some people do actually wash their cars so i don’t want to that’s not the end all be all there anyways welcome to the county congratulations on the land haul yes 25 acres you could do a lot with that it’s probably a better investment than dogecoin i would say could probably use another uh putt putt this is not financial advice but yeah we are not financial advisors um build a disc golf course
[0:53:36 – 0:53:39] Erik: 25 acres would be more than enough for a disc golf course.
[0:53:39 – 0:53:41] Erik: Oh, you have plenty of room.
[0:53:41 – 0:53:44] Adam: And they have a little campsite there, so then you’ve got a place to stay when you come up.
[0:53:44 – 0:53:46] Erik: What’s the one that’s currently happening?
[0:53:46 – 0:53:48] Erik: I’ve been watching those highlights on YouTube.
[0:53:49 – 0:53:50] Erik: Dynamic Disc Tournament.
[0:53:50 – 0:53:52] Adam: DDO and Emporia, yeah.
[0:53:52 – 0:53:53] Erik: That one seems like fun.
[0:53:53 – 0:53:54] Erik: I like the…
[0:53:55 – 0:53:56] Erik: I don’t have that kind of arm.
[0:53:58 – 0:53:59] Adam: Some big throws on that.
[0:53:59 – 0:54:03] Adam: Yeah, that’s not my style these days, but it is fun to watch.
[0:54:03 – 0:54:03] Erik: Yeah.
[0:54:04 – 0:54:08] Erik: Yeah, we won’t get too far down the rabbit hole on disc golf.
[0:54:08 – 0:54:08] Adam: 25 acres.
[0:54:09 – 0:54:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:54:11 – 0:54:12] Erik: Land is gold.
[0:54:12 – 0:54:13] Erik: Send us a message.
[0:54:14 – 0:54:15] Erik: Acid diarrhea.
[0:54:15 – 0:54:24] Erik: Tumblehomecast.gmail can point you in the right direction of any kind of needs you may have for getting that land up and running.
[0:54:24 – 0:54:28] Erik: But it sounds like probably is mostly off grid.
[0:54:29 – 0:54:32] Erik: Probably not too many great opportunities for water and or electricity right away.
[0:54:33 – 0:54:34] Erik: But someday.
[0:54:34 – 0:54:34] Erik: Okay.
[0:54:35 – 0:54:37] Adam: Invest in a good lopper.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:38] Adam: That’s my first advice.
[0:54:38 – 0:54:39] Erik: Multiple loppers.
[0:54:39 – 0:54:41] Adam: Get the best lopper money can buy.
[0:54:41 – 0:54:44] Adam: That’s the first thing you should buy when moving up here.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:46] Erik: Also, tumblehomecast.gmail.com.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:48] Erik: Where do you come down on chainsaw?
[0:54:48 – 0:54:48] Erik: Husqvarna?
[0:54:49 – 0:54:49] Erik: Steel?
[0:54:50 – 0:54:51] Adam: What about these electric ones?
[0:54:51 – 0:54:52] Erik: No.
[0:54:52 – 0:54:52] Erik: Get out of here.
[0:54:52 – 0:54:53] Erik: Battery powered?
[0:54:54 – 0:54:56] Erik: To cut down like two alders?
[0:54:56 – 0:54:56] Erik: Maybe.
[0:54:57 – 0:54:57] Erik: Yeah.
[0:54:58 – 0:54:59] Erik: I mean, maybe that’s all you need.
[0:54:59 – 0:55:01] Erik: Team husk, team steel.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:03] Erik: Next year we should have a chainsaw in the tourney.
[0:55:03 – 0:55:05] Adam: Yeah, why not?
[0:55:05 – 0:55:07] Adam: Can you bring an electric chainsaw in the Boundary Waters?
[0:55:08 – 0:55:08] Adam: No.
[0:55:08 – 0:55:09] Erik: No, you cannot.
[0:55:09 – 0:55:10] Erik: You can’t bring an electric auger.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:11] Adam: No.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:11] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:12 – 0:55:13] Adam: Same deal.
[0:55:14 – 0:55:14] Adam: Can you bring a Vexilar?
[0:55:15 – 0:55:15] Adam: Yes.
[0:55:15 – 0:55:17] Erik: Yes, for some reason.
[0:55:19 – 0:55:23] Adam: Does anybody bring a Vexilar in the summer and like put it on the bottom of the boat or you have the…
[0:55:24 – 0:55:27] Adam: You know, the attachment with the transducer and the little suction cup?
[0:55:28 – 0:55:29] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:34] Erik: I mean, I know that there are suction cup options for the sides of boats and stuff and probably canoes.
[0:55:34 – 0:55:35] Erik: I’ve also seen…
[0:55:35 – 0:55:37] Erik: It’s pretty rudimentary just telling you the depth, though.
[0:55:38 – 0:55:40] Adam: I mean, I don’t know how much it would mark fish when you’re moving.
[0:55:40 – 0:55:41] Erik: I mean, depth is huge, though, still.
[0:55:42 – 0:55:44] Adam: That’s all you really need to know.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:46] Erik: I don’t need to see, like, right where a fish is.
[0:55:48 – 0:55:49] Adam: There’s one down there.
[0:55:50 – 0:55:50] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:50 – 0:55:51] Adam: Yeah, right.
[0:55:51 – 0:55:52] Adam: That’s just a bubble.
[0:55:52 – 0:55:57] Erik: A friend of mine that used to come up, he doesn’t as much anymore, and I know he doesn’t listen to this show.
[0:55:57 – 0:56:01] Erik: So, Nate, if you’re listening, I miss you.
[0:56:01 – 0:56:01] Erik: Nate, are you out there?
[0:56:02 – 0:56:02] Erik: I miss you.
[0:56:03 – 0:56:11] Erik: He used to have this thing that you could clip on to the end of basically any fishing line and cast it.
[0:56:11 – 0:56:12] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:13] Erik: And it was like a little ball.
[0:56:13 – 0:56:17] Erik: Basically, it looked like a bobber.
[0:56:17 – 0:56:17] Erik: Yeah.
[0:56:17 – 0:56:21] Erik: And then wherever you cast it, then it would transmit back to your device.
[0:56:23 – 0:56:50] Erik: a phone or ipod or whatever it would tell you like what the depth was there i thought that was kind of fun it’s almost better you can get like a quick read of the structure not just the place you’re in now yeah well i mean especially with the movement moving it around with the boat you just move it around with some line yeah that’s kind of smart yeah are we moving on well now i have lost my place now we’re in trouble
[0:56:52 – 0:57:00] Erik: Always be… You gotta compose yourself, Eric.
[0:57:01 – 0:57:01] Adam: Be a professional.
[0:57:02 – 0:57:03] Erik: I mean, do you want to read that?
[0:57:03 – 0:57:04] Erik: I’ll read it, but I just…
[0:57:04 – 0:57:05] Erik: I mean, I think that’s…
[0:57:11 – 0:57:11] Adam: All right, I’ll take it.
[0:57:12 – 0:57:12] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:14] Erik: Do you want to just read the name?
[0:57:14 – 0:57:22] Erik: And then you can read the comment, but I don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with it, but I’m not 100% sure why anybody would choose a username as such.
[0:57:24 – 0:57:26] Adam: Maybe it’s just always Boing.
[0:57:27 – 0:57:29] Erik: Always poing.
[0:57:29 – 0:57:30] Erik: There you go.
[0:57:30 – 0:57:33] Erik: All right.
[0:57:33 – 0:57:36] Erik: I’ve been listening to Tumble Home for the last two years.
[0:57:36 – 0:57:41] Erik: I’m now able to take my first trip to the BWCA on June 20th.
[0:57:41 – 0:57:42] Erik: I’m upvoting right now.
[0:57:43 – 0:57:55] Erik: Because of the first trip, we will be going up the Nina Moose with plans to stop on Oyster one night and then base camp three nights on Gay Bay on Aquette.
[0:57:56 – 0:57:59] Erik: And then back to Oyster or Agnes for a night and then out.
[0:58:00 – 0:58:10] Erik: Being it is my first trip, I am just keeping an open mind and taking what the wind, water, and group ability gives us.
[0:58:10 – 0:58:12] Erik: Yeah, I mean, that’s the right idea.
[0:58:12 – 0:58:13] Erik: That’s huge.
[0:58:13 – 0:58:21] Erik: You got to stay open minded on multiple fronts, especially if you’ve got a number of people out on that trip with you.
[0:58:21 – 0:58:22] Erik: A lot can change.
[0:58:24 – 0:58:25] Erik: Stay flexible.
[0:58:25 – 0:58:29] Erik: Anytime you try to get a an itinerary hammered in place.
[0:58:31 – 0:58:35] Erik: It can turn into a square peg in a round hole or vice versa.
[0:58:35 – 0:58:41] Erik: And if the wind doesn’t allow it, you can just end up being frustrated more than you necessarily should be.
[0:58:41 – 0:58:42] Erik: You’re in the boundary waters.
[0:58:42 – 0:58:43] Erik: Go with the flow.
[0:58:43 – 0:58:44] Adam: That’s right.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:44] Adam: Go with the flow.
[0:58:45 – 0:58:51] Erik: And then what is one thing a novice can work on prior to paddle slapping the water?
[0:58:53 – 0:58:54] Adam: As far as paddling itself?
[0:58:55 – 0:59:00] Erik: Yeah, I mean, it’s just one thing that a novice can work on prior to paddle slap in the water.
[0:59:00 – 0:59:01] Adam: Tennis.
[0:59:01 – 0:59:02] Adam: You just play a lot of tennis.
[0:59:02 – 0:59:03] Adam: Just play a lot of tennis.
[0:59:03 – 0:59:04] Adam: Get that arm warmed up.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:30] Adam: i’m kind of serious chop wood chop some wood some wood work on your yeah i mean core strength is more important than arm strength i would say like uh yeah like you know pick up some heavy stuff and kind of carry it around yeah i mean that’s my favorite workout pick up a ladder and just walk around the yard a bunch yeah just i mean just generally being in like
[0:59:34 – 0:59:52] Adam: moderately well-rounded shape will go all joking aside like yeah just like do a bunch of hikes yeah just be your arm will be sore the first day either way no paddling so just as long as you’re like get your legs going good then you command the portage yeah then the lakes will take care of themselves
[0:59:52 – 0:59:53] Erik: Well, that’s what I was going to say.
[0:59:53 – 0:59:55] Erik: It’s, like, no matter how much… And you could be…
[0:59:55 – 1:00:01] Erik: I mean, I’m sure you could be a fully jacked, like, world’s strongest man UFC guy.
[1:00:01 – 1:00:02] Erik: Still isn’t hard to hike.
[1:00:02 – 1:00:05] Erik: And not be affected by a Bon Jovi trip.
[1:00:05 – 1:00:10] Erik: But, like, even for myself personally, like, I keep myself in, like, relatively, like, well-rounded shape.
[1:00:10 – 1:00:11] Erik: I’m not, like…
[1:00:12 – 1:00:23] Erik: Working on specific areas to showcase, but like just to kind of stay limber and any first trip, my first trip every year, I’m still sore for like two or three days.
[1:00:23 – 1:00:27] Erik: Every day of the trip, I’ll wake up and I’m like, I don’t use these muscles ever.
[1:00:27 – 1:00:28] Erik: And not for that long.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:30] Erik: Lifting.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:31] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:32 – 1:00:34] Erik: Paddling, just paddling in general.
[1:00:34 – 1:00:41] Erik: If you get the opportunity to get in a canoe for even just an afternoon, like that can help like hands too.
[1:00:42 – 1:00:45] Erik: Like, uh, you’ll for sure you’re going to end up with blisters.
[1:00:46 – 1:00:54] Erik: So if there’s anything that you can do like with your hands to like kind of build up a little bit of a, a homemade glove, uh,
[1:00:55 – 1:00:58] Erik: Split some wood, move some rocks with our gloves.
[1:00:58 – 1:00:59] Adam: I’ve never heard that term before.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:00] Adam: You’ve got to get the homemade glove going.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:03] Adam: That sounds pretty good.
[1:01:03 – 1:01:04] Adam: It sounds wise.
[1:01:05 – 1:01:09] Erik: The homemade glove is maybe the first time I’ve ever said it in those words.
[1:01:09 – 1:01:13] Erik: But the idea comes from, I remember when I was working at a kennel.
[1:01:14 – 1:01:23] Erik: And we were moving big blocks of frozen chunks of frozen mink meat that we fed to the dogs.
[1:01:23 – 1:01:24] Erik: And I was wearing gloves.
[1:01:25 – 1:01:27] Erik: And the other guy that I was with was not wearing gloves.
[1:01:27 – 1:01:30] Erik: And I was like, man, how are you doing this without gloves?
[1:01:30 – 1:01:32] Erik: And he’s like, why buy them when you can grow them?
[1:01:36 – 1:01:37] Erik: He said that was what his grandpa always said.
[1:01:38 – 1:01:39] Erik: He’s like, why buy gloves when you can grow them?
[1:01:39 – 1:01:42] Adam: Just use your hands and you will build calluses.
[1:01:42 – 1:01:42] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:01:43 – 1:01:47] Adam: I was in the walk-in for five minutes and my hands were froze.
[1:01:47 – 1:01:49] Adam: I ice fish all the time.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:52] Adam: I don’t think you ever get used to the cold with the hands.
[1:01:53 – 1:01:54] Adam: That’s a mind game.
[1:01:54 – 1:01:56] Adam: You’re playing with yourself thinking you can grow a glove.
[1:01:57 – 1:02:00] Erik: Well, also mostly just like the roughness.
[1:02:00 – 1:02:02] Erik: Not necessarily your effect from cold.
[1:02:02 – 1:02:04] Adam: Sensitivity to cold, but the toughness, sure.
[1:02:05 – 1:02:05] Adam: I can see that.
[1:02:06 – 1:02:08] Erik: Build up those calluses.
[1:02:08 – 1:02:09] Adam: Grow some gloves.
[1:02:09 – 1:02:11] Erik: Grow your own gloves.
[1:02:12 – 1:02:12] Erik: Holy smokes.
[1:02:12 – 1:02:15] Erik: It’s also kind of gross to think about growing your own gloves.
[1:02:17 – 1:02:17] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[1:02:17 – 1:02:20] Erik: Besides that, I think you’ve kind of nailed it.
[1:02:20 – 1:02:29] Erik: Always be hoeing with the open mind that you’ve suggested on the especially first time trip.
[1:02:30 – 1:02:30] Erik: Yeah.
[1:02:32 – 1:02:41] Erik: Yeah, and with the amount of time you have, three nights of a base camp and a night on either end, kind of in and out, shouldn’t be too much that should really affect that.
[1:02:43 – 1:02:46] Erik: So you’ve got the, it sounds like the right mind frame, mindset.
[1:02:47 – 1:02:51] Adam: Yeah, a good mindset can overcome any physical soreness that you might experience.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:52] Adam: Yeah.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:53] Adam: So you’ve got that going for you.
[1:02:54 – 1:02:56] Adam: Positive mental attitude, Eric.
[1:02:56 – 1:02:58] Adam: You’ve got to have it, always.
[1:02:58 – 1:02:58] Adam: PMA.
[1:02:58 – 1:02:58] Adam: PMA.
[1:02:59 – 1:03:22] Adam: pma we should get back into a pma one of these days yeah maybe the timber free air pma what would that be a good way to get a little warm-up tripping because i would like to get it on the water regardless and like at least get a short paddle in before we hit like one can’t hit that first uh trip of the year having not been on the water yet what’s the opposite of primitive um
[1:03:26 – 1:03:29] Adam: I want to say futuristic, but I don’t think that’s right.
[1:03:29 – 1:03:30] Adam: Developed?
[1:03:31 – 1:03:33] Adam: Advanced?
[1:03:33 – 1:03:33] Adam: No.
[1:03:34 – 1:03:34] Adam: Enlightened.
[1:03:34 – 1:03:35] Adam: I think it’s enlightened.
[1:03:35 – 1:03:37] Erik: So it’s an enlightened management area?
[1:03:37 – 1:03:38] Erik: The freer loop?
[1:03:39 – 1:03:40] Adam: Yeah.
[1:03:40 – 1:03:42] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[1:03:43 – 1:03:44] Adam: The ELMs.
[1:03:47 – 1:03:48] Erik: What is it?
[1:03:48 – 1:03:50] Erik: An enlightened management area.
[1:03:50 – 1:03:50] Erik: EMA.
[1:03:51 – 1:03:53] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[1:03:53 – 1:03:54] Adam: EMA.
[1:03:55 – 1:03:56] Adam: I like EMA better.
[1:03:56 – 1:03:57] Adam: EMA.
[1:03:57 – 1:03:59] Adam: All right.
[1:03:59 – 1:04:01] Adam: We got to get to one of those.
[1:04:02 – 1:04:04] Adam: Here they got one up at the free air.
[1:04:05 – 1:04:06] Erik: The free air.
[1:04:07 – 1:04:09] Erik: We’re going to end part one with Aldi one.
[1:04:14 – 1:04:15] Adam: Oh, that’s a good way to end it.
[1:04:16 – 1:04:18] Erik: Champion of the tumble tourney.
[1:04:18 – 1:04:21] Adam: We got 10 boxes of wine for the champ.
[1:04:22 – 1:04:22] Adam: Welcome back, champ.
[1:04:22 – 1:04:31] Erik: I also love the fact that the verb has started becoming more apparent on the subreddit of franzia-ing people.
[1:04:31 – 1:04:34] Adam: Yeah, that’s one of the better things that happened in the last year.
[1:04:34 – 1:04:39] Adam: Yeah, I’m sure Aldi’s going to franzia this comment to end the show.
[1:04:39 – 1:04:42] Adam: I’m confident with 10 boxes of wine.
[1:04:43 – 1:04:45] Adam: I love the season opener episode.
[1:04:46 – 1:04:47] Adam: So much optimism and excitement in the air.
[1:04:48 – 1:04:50] Adam: I’m headed up to Clearwater for the first time in May.
[1:04:51 – 1:04:56] Adam: I’m looking to do a mini loop over to West Pike and back down through Pine via that long portage.
[1:04:57 – 1:05:01] Adam: Outside of this Vento unit trip, I have two others planned for later in the summer.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:05] Adam: My excitement for this year revolves around the BWCA basics.
[1:05:06 – 1:05:13] Adam: I have no new gear to try out, no revolutionary methods, just hoping to get some quality time out in the woods with friends.
[1:05:14 – 1:05:15] Adam: Happy paddling, everyone.
[1:05:15 – 1:05:16] Adam: And wear your life jacket.
[1:05:17 – 1:05:18] Erik: Heck yeah.
[1:05:18 – 1:05:19] Erik: That’s good advice.
[1:05:19 – 1:05:19] Erik: Huzzah.
[1:05:19 – 1:05:20] Adam: Huzzah.
[1:05:20 – 1:05:21] Adam: I’ll do one.
[1:05:21 – 1:05:26] Erik: I like the sentiment that you don’t always have to bring in something new.
[1:05:28 – 1:05:38] Erik: If you’ve got a comfortable trip style, you got your gear figured out, then you can focus on all of the other good things that the Boundary Waters has to offer.
[1:05:39 – 1:05:47] Erik: And sometimes that’s better than messing around with some kind of a new tactic, new trick, new gimmick.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:50] Erik: Just focus on why you’re there.
[1:05:50 – 1:05:56] Adam: Yeah, I’d much rather be going to a new place than having a new gear, but sometimes you can have both.
[1:05:56 – 1:05:58] Erik: Yeah, I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve got.
[1:05:58 – 1:06:01] Adam: There always just seems to be something that’s worn out, right?
[1:06:01 – 1:06:02] Erik: Kind of.
[1:06:02 – 1:06:05] Erik: I mean, for me, it doesn’t necessarily have the same…
[1:06:06 – 1:06:07] Erik: I don’t really think that way.
[1:06:07 – 1:06:12] Erik: As an outfitter, I can take stuff that’s brand new for myself anytime that I want, but like…
[1:06:13 – 1:06:30] Adam: yes i get what you’re saying like yeah sometimes most of my new stuff is just replacing old stuff now and still count it as new but yeah yeah i don’t know you don’t need new tactics though just enjoy the basics i like that yep enjoy the basics you’re going to pike to pine portage though i mean
[1:06:31 – 1:06:35] Erik: Pike to Pine Portage, honestly, isn’t that bad.
[1:06:35 – 1:06:37] Erik: It’s a bit of a climb, but it’s straight.
[1:06:37 – 1:06:39] Erik: Doesn’t it come into McFarland, really?
[1:06:39 – 1:06:39] Erik: Is that the one?
[1:06:39 – 1:06:41] Erik: No, that’s the bad one.
[1:06:41 – 1:06:42] Erik: That’s the…
[1:06:43 – 1:06:43] Erik: He’s doing…
[1:06:44 – 1:06:45] Erik: There’s one down the middle?
[1:06:45 – 1:06:45] Erik: Yes.
[1:06:46 – 1:06:50] Erik: So from West Pike to East Pike, there’s a portage, obviously.
[1:06:50 – 1:06:50] Erik: Right.
[1:06:51 – 1:06:56] Erik: And then within the first, I think, 40 rods out of West Pike towards East Pike…
[1:06:57 – 1:07:01] Erik: There is a trail to the right that cuts up over to the border route trail.
[1:07:02 – 1:07:02] Erik: Yes.
[1:07:02 – 1:07:04] Erik: And then back down to Pine.
[1:07:05 – 1:07:07] Adam: Okay, yeah, no, I’ve been up to the Border Out Trail there.
[1:07:07 – 1:07:08] Adam: Yeah, yeah, we did that.
[1:07:08 – 1:07:09] Adam: But not any farther.
[1:07:09 – 1:07:09] Adam: Yeah.
[1:07:10 – 1:07:11] Adam: That continues downhill to Pine.
[1:07:11 – 1:07:14] Adam: That continues downhill to Pine where there is a… That’s not that bad if you’re going that way.
[1:07:14 – 1:07:17] Erik: Yeah, there’s a hike-in only campsite on the other side on Pine.
[1:07:17 – 1:07:18] Erik: Oh, yeah, sure.
[1:07:18 – 1:07:26] Adam: And it is not that East Pike to McFarland abandoned portage, which is… That one’s also haunted now.
[1:07:26 – 1:07:27] Adam: That one’s no bueno.
[1:07:27 – 1:07:30] Adam: In fact, there’s a few specters, and they’re not friendly.
[1:07:31 – 1:07:31] Adam: They’re a foe.
[1:07:33 – 1:07:33] Erik: They are a foe.
[1:07:34 – 1:07:40] Erik: Well, we’ve got about 30 more comments.
[1:07:40 – 1:07:41] Adam: Are you kidding me?
[1:07:42 – 1:07:45] Adam: At one point there, I was like, I don’t know, maybe we will do this in one.
[1:07:45 – 1:07:46] Erik: No, there’s a lot.
[1:07:46 – 1:07:47] Erik: There’s still quite a few.
[1:07:47 – 1:07:51] Adam: Let’s go get some fresh air and then come on back for part two.
[1:07:51 – 1:07:59] Erik: Yeah, we’ve got Squarejaw77, Smooth Operator, some new names I have not seen.
[1:08:00 – 1:08:06] Erik: Nobody’s mentioned the number of beers they’re bringing to Clearwater, so that’s disappointing.
[1:08:06 – 1:08:10] Adam: I have it on good authority that some beers are on their way and some ciders, I think.
[1:08:10 – 1:08:14] Adam: And I also have some beers in hand for a future episode.
[1:08:15 – 1:08:16] Adam: New friend of the show.
[1:08:17 – 1:08:17] Adam: New friend?
[1:08:18 – 1:08:20] Adam: Yeah, they’re on their way, I think.
[1:08:20 – 1:08:21] Adam: It’s the summer season now.
[1:08:21 – 1:08:24] Erik: Yeah, we’ve upgraded the fridge system.
[1:08:26 – 1:08:27] Adam: I’m sorry, what were you going to say about the fridge?
[1:08:27 – 1:08:30] Erik: We’ve got a new fridge to be able to accommodate more beers.
[1:08:31 – 1:08:32] Erik: Oh, holy smokes.
[1:08:32 – 1:08:41] Erik: Yeah, it was like taking up space in the outfitting room, so I was unable to pack out food for people.
[1:08:41 – 1:08:44] Erik: So I want to give those beers a good home.
[1:08:44 – 1:08:48] Erik: So there is a larger refrigerator this year to house them.
[1:08:49 – 1:08:58] Adam: I would say if we ever, like when the new Studio K is finished, it’s a pretty small little studio on its own, but like half of that should be refrigeration.
[1:08:59 – 1:08:59] Adam: Yes.
[1:09:00 – 1:09:03] Erik: Studio K is just half refrigerated.
[1:09:03 – 1:09:04] Erik: One of those big coolers.
[1:09:04 – 1:09:05] Erik: Big sliders.
[1:09:05 – 1:09:07] Adam: We sit in a walk-in cooler and record.
[1:09:08 – 1:09:13] Adam: The whole thing could be a walk-in cooler and we could just, more impervious to the cold anyhow.
[1:09:13 – 1:09:15] Adam: It’d be better for the equipment.
[1:09:16 – 1:09:16] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:09:16 – 1:09:17] Erik: For sure.
[1:09:17 – 1:09:19] Erik: Electronics always run better than the cold.
[1:09:20 – 1:09:21] Adam: Yeah, sounds like a plan.
[1:09:22 – 1:09:23] Erik: Or so I have been told.
[1:09:23 – 1:09:25] Adam: All right, well, I’m pumped for part two.
[1:09:26 – 1:09:29] Adam: Thanks for everybody who contributed to part one.
[1:09:30 – 1:09:34] Adam: And I hope a lot of people going on their first trips out there, good luck on those trips.
[1:09:34 – 1:09:35] Adam: Sounds like it.
[1:09:35 – 1:09:36] Adam: You’re going to have a good time.
[1:09:37 – 1:09:41] Adam: And, yeah, sounds like some really cool trips going on out there.
[1:09:41 – 1:09:42] Adam: I’m getting pretty jacked.
[1:09:42 – 1:09:45] Erik: I am very excited for our trip.
[1:09:45 – 1:09:48] Erik: I’m honestly very excited for the season to start.
[1:09:48 – 1:09:59] Erik: The nervousness of knowing if we’re going to be having half of the projects that we’re working on right now finished is what’s stressing me out more than anything else.
[1:10:00 – 1:10:12] Erik: But once things are in place, I am definitely looking forward to what sounds like will eventually be a mostly normal season at Clearwater Lodge.
[1:10:13 – 1:10:20] Erik: If you haven’t gotten a vaccine, go ahead and do the right thing and get that.
[1:10:20 – 1:10:28] Erik: I think most of our listeners have good heads on their shoulders, I’d like to think, from all perspectives.
[1:10:30 – 1:10:31] Erik: From everything that I’ve heard, it sounds like that.
[1:10:32 – 1:10:37] Erik: I don’t necessarily know that I’m preaching anybody that hasn’t, but if you know somebody that hasn’t, maybe try to convince them.
[1:10:38 – 1:10:39] Erik: Go on ahead and get that.
[1:10:39 – 1:10:40] Erik: They’re everywhere now.
[1:10:41 – 1:10:42] Adam: Yeah, they’re pretty easy to get.
[1:10:42 – 1:10:45] Adam: I trust the doctors.
[1:10:45 – 1:10:46] Erik: Yeah.
[1:10:47 – 1:10:48] Erik: Why not trust them in this case?
[1:10:48 – 1:10:51] Erik: We trust them for a lot of other things.
[1:10:51 – 1:10:56] Erik: So we’re not going to have a vaccine chat here, but just a little light PSA.
[1:10:57 – 1:10:58] Erik: Get that jab.
[1:10:58 – 1:11:01] Erik: Whether it’s one or two, don’t jab shot.
[1:11:01 – 1:11:02] Erik: Just get it.
[1:11:03 – 1:11:06] Erik: And with that, that’s going to wrap 0145.
[1:11:06 – 1:11:07] Erik: And if you’re in this room…
[1:11:10 – 1:11:13] Erik: You’re going to be able to hear us come right back and do 0146.
[1:11:13 – 1:11:16] Erik: If you’re not, you’re going to have to wait a week.
[1:11:18 – 1:11:23] Adam: Oh, yeah, that’s pretty neat that you and I get to just now do the next one.
[1:11:24 – 1:11:25] Adam: We get to hear the podcast?
[1:11:25 – 1:11:27] Adam: Yeah, we get to hear the podcast live.
[1:11:27 – 1:11:27] Adam: It’s pretty neat.
[1:11:27 – 1:11:31] Erik: Yep, you have to be either me or Adam to get early access.
[1:11:32 – 1:11:33] Adam: Life sure is crazy, Eric.
[1:11:33 – 1:11:33] Erik: It is crazy.
[1:11:33 – 1:11:36] Erik: I’m so fortunate that we get early access to Tumble Home.
[1:11:36 – 1:11:38] Adam: Yeah, wow, super premium.
[1:11:38 – 1:11:43] Adam: All right, happy paddling, everyone, and see you next week.
[1:11:43 – 1:11:44] Adam: Bye.
[1:11:48 – 1:11:51] Erik: Send us that Janet Jackson chip tune, Matt.
[1:11:51 – 1:11:52] Adam: Janet Jackson chips.
[1:11:52 – 1:11:53] Erik: We’ll get it.
[1:11:53 – 1:11:54] UNKNOWN: Chip, chip, chip, chip, chip.
[1:11:55 – 1:11:55] Adam: Hold on.
[1:11:55 – 1:11:56] Adam: I can play.
[1:11:56 – 1:11:57] Adam: I had it queued up, actually.
[1:11:58 – 1:11:59] Erik: We can just talk a little bit.
[1:11:59 – 1:12:00] Erik: Oh, man.
[1:12:01 – 1:12:02] Erik: Oh, man.
