[0:00:03 – 0:00:08] Adam: Welcome to Tomahome Boundary Waters Podcast.
[0:00:09 – 0:00:11] Adam: Welcome to Tomahome Boundary Waters Podcast.
[0:00:12 – 0:00:16] Adam: My name is Adam, joined here in Studio O by my best man, Eric.
[0:00:16 – 0:00:16] Adam: Hello, Eric.
[0:00:16 – 0:00:18] Adam: Hello, deja vu.
[0:00:19 – 0:00:20] Adam: This is episode 0151.
[0:00:20 – 0:00:23] Adam: 151 episodes of Tomahome coming at you from the Northwoods.
[0:00:29 – 0:00:31] Erik: Yeah, not the North Shore, the North Woods.
[0:00:31 – 0:00:32] Erik: The Northern Wood.
[0:00:32 – 0:00:33] Erik: The Northern Wood.
[0:00:34 – 0:00:39] Adam: Got another field episode coming at you this week.
[0:00:39 – 0:00:41] Adam: What are the boys going to do today?
[0:00:41 – 0:00:43] Erik: Our past selves.
[0:00:43 – 0:00:44] Adam: I don’t even know where we’re at anymore.
[0:00:44 – 0:00:49] Adam: No, it’s so far from the actual trip that even I am like, what is going to happen on this next episode?
[0:00:49 – 0:00:50] Adam: Who’s to say?
[0:00:50 – 0:00:51] Erik: Who’s to say?
[0:00:52 – 0:00:52] Adam: Pretty exciting.
[0:00:53 – 0:00:56] Erik: Yeah, I think we’re catching up with ourselves on Thomas.
[0:00:57 – 0:00:59] Erik: Make our way to Ensign?
[0:00:59 – 0:01:01] Erik: Maybe there’s some elocutions?
[0:01:01 – 0:01:14] Adam: Well, there’s some Thomas, and then I believe there’s going to be just some looking back on how we got to Thomas, even talk of the fish dance, pictographs, pictured rocks, if you will.
[0:01:14 – 0:01:16] Adam: Magical day on the water for Cody.
[0:01:16 – 0:01:25] Adam: What we found there on the pictured rocks and how that might relate to the mysterious orb that we may or may not have hallucinated.
[0:01:26 – 0:01:27] Adam: It’s going to be exciting.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:30] Adam: Today is Ron Schera Outdoor Calendar Fact of the Day.
[0:01:31 – 0:01:37] Adam: For June 18th, 2021, the Minnesota State Flower, the Pink Lady Slipper, is now blooming.
[0:01:38 – 0:01:41] Adam: Sunset’s at 9.02 p.m. Only 9.02.
[0:01:41 – 0:01:43] Adam: That’s got to be, again, out of the cities.
[0:01:43 – 0:01:44] Adam: Ridiculous.
[0:01:44 – 0:01:45] Adam: I feel like it’s 10.15 up there.
[0:01:45 – 0:01:45] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:46 – 0:01:47] Adam: We were outside.
[0:01:47 – 0:01:51] Adam: I got pretty burnt up lounging on the deck the other day.
[0:01:53 – 0:01:55] Adam: My poor legs couldn’t handle that.
[0:01:55 – 0:02:00] Adam: And I go to Natalie, I said, is the sun just like way brighter this year?
[0:02:00 – 0:02:01] Adam: Has something happened?
[0:02:01 – 0:02:04] Adam: I was reading something about the magnetic anomalies again.
[0:02:05 – 0:02:06] Erik: The termination event?
[0:02:06 – 0:02:07] Erik: Did you read about that?
[0:02:07 – 0:02:08] Adam: Yeah, I’m not excited about that.
[0:02:08 – 0:02:12] Adam: Yeah, there’s a lot of magma moving around, and it’s not looking good.
[0:02:13 – 0:02:16] Adam: It somehow tilted the Earth even more towards the sun.
[0:02:16 – 0:02:19] Adam: I just feel like it’s right in my eyes all the time right now.
[0:02:19 – 0:02:20] Erik: It is very bright.
[0:02:20 – 0:02:22] Adam: Ever since we got off Alice, there’s too much sun.
[0:02:23 – 0:02:28] Erik: Maybe something about the orb affected your… Maybe my retinas got burned out.
[0:02:28 – 0:02:30] Adam: You accept light into your eyes.
[0:02:30 – 0:02:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:30 – 0:02:32] Adam: My receptors are…
[0:02:32 – 0:02:33] Erik: Rods and cones are all screwed up.
[0:02:34 – 0:02:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:36] Adam: My cones, Eric.
[0:02:37 – 0:02:37] Adam: I can feel them.
[0:02:38 – 0:02:39] Adam: They’re all open.
[0:02:39 – 0:02:41] Adam: They’re all too open.
[0:02:41 – 0:02:44] Adam: I got the big end of the cone out, not the small end.
[0:02:44 – 0:02:47] Adam: You got your cones all flipped like the Earth’s magnetic field.
[0:02:47 – 0:02:48] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:49] Adam: Not good.
[0:02:49 – 0:03:02] Erik: Yeah, we don’t necessarily need to get into it too much, but if you’re interested in the solar cycle and the aurora, there is some hypotheses and or hypothesis out there.
[0:03:02 – 0:03:03] Erik: Hypotenuse.
[0:03:03 – 0:03:14] Erik: Yeah, and a hypotenuse as well concerning the termination event, which is this thing where the polar opposites on the sun…
[0:03:16 – 0:03:28] Erik: They come together and when they meet in the middle, it could potentially kick off maybe one of the craziest solar cycles in recorded history.
[0:03:28 – 0:03:29] Erik: Yes.
[0:03:29 – 0:03:37] Erik: Or they could just be completely wrong because everything else that’s leading up to this next solar cycle suggests it’s going to be a very weak one.
[0:03:38 – 0:03:39] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:39 – 0:03:40] Adam: Who knows?
[0:03:40 – 0:03:52] Adam: No, I mean, there’s evidence that the poles, the polarity, Earth’s polarity, if you will, that it does shift and gyrate in the past.
[0:03:52 – 0:03:57] Adam: They’ve seen evidence of this in the rings of the trees, Eric.
[0:03:57 – 0:03:58] Adam: They dreamt they were old.
[0:03:59 – 0:04:00] SPEAKER_00: They were so old.
[0:04:01 – 0:04:02] Adam: It could happen again.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:06] Adam: There’s a lot of weird magma readings and magnetic anomalies being recorded.
[0:04:07 – 0:04:11] Adam: The magma of Earth is moving in a way it shouldn’t move.
[0:04:12 – 0:04:12] Adam: Or should it?
[0:04:13 – 0:04:14] Adam: It’s doing what it needs to do.
[0:04:14 – 0:04:15] Adam: That’s what magma does.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:26] Adam: Yeah, the inner workings of the earth and the bottoms of the oceans, mysterious things we’ll never fully understand probably in our lifetimes.
[0:04:26 – 0:04:34] Adam: But coming up in a few, we’re going to be talking about the cinematic smash hit Aquaman and the merpeople, all seven kingdoms of the mer, Eric.
[0:04:35 – 0:04:40] Adam: And how that relates to actual life here on earth in 2021.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:42 – 0:04:43] Adam: That’s coming up end of the month.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:50] Adam: Next up, though, on Tomahawk Cinema Classics, of course, the Big Lebowski.
[0:04:50 – 0:04:54] Erik: For all you patrons out there, thank you, sponsors.
[0:04:55 – 0:05:00] Erik: It’s $5 a month to essentially just listen to us review movies now.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:00] Erik: Ha ha.
[0:05:01 – 0:05:05] Erik: It took us 25 episodes to pretend like we were going to review camping and or outdoor movies.
[0:05:05 – 0:05:08] Adam: There’s only so many Kevin Bacon river movies out there.
[0:05:08 – 0:05:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:05:08 – 0:05:08] Adam: You know.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:09] Erik: And we did them both.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:14] Erik: And we also did all of the movies that have the song Yakety Yak in them.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:17] Adam: And every single movie that is Bart the Bear.
[0:05:17 – 0:05:18] Adam: Basically.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:20] Adam: So, I mean, now we’re kind of out of material.
[0:05:20 – 0:05:22] Adam: So we’re just going to open up the scope a little bit.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:25] Adam: We were saying we’ve got to do, we’ll probably do Moonrise Kingdom too.
[0:05:26 – 0:05:26] Erik: They camp.
[0:05:26 – 0:05:27] Adam: They camp.
[0:05:27 – 0:05:28] Adam: Like half the movie he’s camping.
[0:05:28 – 0:05:30] Adam: That’s a really fine set camp.
[0:05:31 – 0:05:31] Adam: Yes.
[0:05:31 – 0:05:32] Adam: Finest he’s ever seen.
[0:05:32 – 0:05:33] Adam: Commendable.
[0:05:33 – 0:05:34] Adam: Commendable.
[0:05:34 – 0:05:34] Adam: Commendable.
[0:05:34 – 0:05:36] Adam: I added Jaws to the list as well.
[0:05:38 – 0:05:38] Erik: Got to do Jaws.
[0:05:39 – 0:05:41] Erik: Just do all, just the entire filmography of Dreyfuss?
[0:05:41 – 0:05:41] Erik: Yes.
[0:05:42 – 0:05:43] Erik: All of the Dreyfusses.
[0:05:43 – 0:05:44] Adam: He’s their new Pesci.
[0:05:44 – 0:05:45] Adam: It’s 2021.
[0:05:45 – 0:05:46] Adam: Get with it.
[0:05:47 – 0:05:48] Adam: It’s hot Pesci summer.
[0:05:49 – 0:05:50] Adam: I mean, Dreyfuss.
[0:05:50 – 0:05:52] Adam: Hot Dreyfuss fall.
[0:05:52 – 0:05:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:05:53 – 0:05:54] Erik: Crispy.
[0:05:54 – 0:05:55] Erik: He’s still around, right?
[0:05:55 – 0:05:57] Erik: Yeah, he’s still doing things.
[0:05:57 – 0:06:00] Erik: He’s not making stuff, though, right?
[0:06:00 – 0:06:03] Erik: He seemed like old in Stand By Me, or did they make him old?
[0:06:03 – 0:06:05] Erik: Oh, yeah, he was crinkled.
[0:06:05 – 0:06:06] Adam: He was aged?
[0:06:06 – 0:06:08] Adam: Yeah, he was dusted.
[0:06:12 – 0:06:14] Adam: Get that Dreyfus dust on you.
[0:06:15 – 0:06:24] Adam: Yeah, I’m pretty excited to hear all our fishing adventures on Thomas this week and maybe get back to some sense of normalcy.
[0:06:25 – 0:06:34] Adam: You know, I always feel like day two, night two, day three, that section of the trip, it always gets a little jangled and weird sometimes.
[0:06:34 – 0:06:41] Adam: And then you kind of start to work your way back to sanity as the trip progresses from there.
[0:06:41 – 0:06:42] Erik: Sure, whatever you need to tell yourself.
[0:06:42 – 0:06:51] Adam: It’ll be interesting to see where this episode goes because, like Eric said, I’m not really sure the order of things.
[0:06:51 – 0:06:53] Adam: I know what’s coming, but I just don’t know the order of them.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:57] Adam: Eric’s in charge of the post-production, and we’re going to find out.
[0:06:58 – 0:07:14] Erik: even i don’t know what’s coming soon i haven’t even i haven’t listened since it went into the magic uh field mic so it could come out in any uh different variations and uh yeah i think uh i’m pretty excited i think this is gonna be a good one
[0:07:14 – 0:07:14] Adam: Sure.
[0:07:15 – 0:07:17] Adam: Well, yeah, you’ve really set us up for something now.
[0:07:18 – 0:07:19] Adam: It’s going to be a real banger.
[0:07:19 – 0:07:21] Erik: It’s going to be a grandmaster.
[0:07:21 – 0:07:27] Erik: If there’s podcast awards for individual episodes, this one should damn well better be nominated.
[0:07:27 – 0:07:30] Erik: And I’m saying that before I’ve even listened to it.
[0:07:30 – 0:07:33] Adam: It’s a feeling more than a knowledge.
[0:07:33 – 0:07:43] Erik: Well, speaking of feeling, I’m feeling this tall, cold can of sponsors in the studio here.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:50] Erik: And I don’t know, I kind of maybe lost track of when beers came in, so I’m a little off the board when it comes to chronology.
[0:07:51 – 0:07:54] Erik: in usually how I like to have sponsors roll in.
[0:07:54 – 0:08:02] Erik: But based on the Tumble Home Cinema Classics mezzanine that we’re going to get into here in just a minute, I thought these sounded appropriate.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:08] Erik: These are from Bad Weather Brewing Company out of St. Paul, Minnesota.
[0:08:09 – 0:08:14] Erik: and their Immortal Toast infused white stouts.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:21] Erik: 7.5% freshly ground coffee pairs with chocolate and vanilla beans for an intensely rich flavor.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:27] Erik: Made from a rediscovered recipe designed by our co-founder’s father, Greg Carpenter.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:29] Erik: We now brew it in his memory.
[0:08:30 – 0:08:34] Erik: Raise your glass to him and those gone but never forgotten.
[0:08:35 – 0:08:36] Erik: And these are from Mark.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:38] Adam: Thanks, Mark.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:43] Adam: Mark was a bowler and he enjoyed surfing all the way up to Pismo.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:50] Erik: Raise one if you got one out there.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:51] Erik: Cheers.
[0:08:51 – 0:08:52] Erik: Cheers.
[0:08:52 – 0:08:53] Erik: Stereo.
[0:08:56 – 0:08:57] SPEAKER_00: White stout.
[0:08:58 – 0:08:58] Adam: Yeah, I was in town.
[0:08:59 – 0:09:02] Adam: I did look for small white Russians.
[0:09:02 – 0:09:03] Adam: Yeah, just like to go.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:04] Adam: Just wanted like a one-shooter.
[0:09:04 – 0:09:05] Adam: Room temperature.
[0:09:05 – 0:09:10] Adam: Room temp, one-shooter Caucasians, no dice.
[0:09:10 – 0:09:12] Adam: Yeah, that would have been the perfect sponsor.
[0:09:12 – 0:09:19] Adam: I would have had to have bought like a .175, a Kalua, and gotten a half-and-half.
[0:09:19 – 0:09:25] Adam: Dwayne in the lodge said he got a half-and-half, but I didn’t come up with the Kalua or the Vati.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:28] Erik: Could have gotten some really good mustache sucking audio.
[0:09:28 – 0:09:29] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[0:09:29 – 0:09:33] Erik: I feel like that’s half of Jeff Bridges’ lines is just like mouth noises.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:34] Adam: Confused head tilt.
[0:09:35 – 0:09:36] SPEAKER_00: Man.
[0:09:36 – 0:09:38] Adam: Mix a hell of a Caucasian, Jackie.
[0:09:39 – 0:09:42] Erik: Yeah, so if you want to listen to us basically just quote The Big Lebowski.
[0:09:42 – 0:09:43] Erik: All our favorite quotes.
[0:09:43 – 0:09:46] Erik: You can become a $5 a month patron.
[0:09:46 – 0:10:00] Erik: Also, though, we are going to do an underrated, overrated, best, worst Coen Brothers breakdown to get a little bit more of a discussion in there besides us just like basically gushing over The Big Lebowski and quoting our favorite lines.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:03] Erik: Although Adam did assure me he noticed a few new things.
[0:10:03 – 0:10:07] Adam: I’ve watched it 110 times now and I’ve noticed something new every time I watched it.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:11] Adam: Got like three new things on this watch.
[0:10:11 – 0:10:14] Adam: I was doing a little more research, not just watching.
[0:10:15 – 0:10:18] Adam: I was digging in to the back end.
[0:10:18 – 0:10:23] Erik: You have a potential idea on who the stranger is?
[0:10:25 – 0:10:29] Adam: Yeah, we can definitely discuss what the stranger, what is the stranger.
[0:10:29 – 0:10:30] Adam: Yeah, okay.
[0:10:30 – 0:10:30] Adam: Not who.
[0:10:31 – 0:10:31] Erik: Great.
[0:10:31 – 0:10:31] Erik: What?
[0:10:32 – 0:10:35] Erik: A narrator that interacts with people in the movie.
[0:10:36 – 0:10:37] Erik: Very interesting concept.
[0:10:37 – 0:10:38] Erik: We’ll talk about that and more.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:47] Erik: On the TCC, in the meantime, listen to our leveling out.
[0:10:48 – 0:10:51] Erik: Our brains get unzotted, unjangled.
[0:10:52 – 0:10:54] Erik: Find out if we run into any fish.
[0:10:55 – 0:10:56] Erik: I don’t remember.
[0:10:56 – 0:10:56] Erik: Did we?
[0:10:57 – 0:10:58] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:10:58 – 0:10:59] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:10:59 – 0:11:02] Adam: See, I don’t know when this episode ends and when part four is going to begin.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:03] Adam: Eric said, well, I don’t know.
[0:11:03 – 0:11:06] Adam: It could just be the third and final part.
[0:11:07 – 0:11:13] Adam: But I believe there is enough material out there for two more parts, so we’re going to go ahead and plan on that.
[0:11:13 – 0:11:15] Adam: I think the fish don’t come until part four.
[0:11:16 – 0:11:17] Adam: Wow.
[0:11:18 – 0:11:19] Adam: But there might be some fish in this part.
[0:11:19 – 0:11:19] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:11:21 – 0:11:21] Erik: Well.
[0:11:21 – 0:11:22] Adam: I don’t know what’s out there.
[0:11:23 – 0:11:23] Erik: Let’s find out.
[0:11:24 – 0:11:27] Erik: Cue the loon song.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:38] Erik: What are you giving the Immortal Toast?
[0:11:38 – 0:11:44] Erik: I give the can artwork probably my favorite can artwork I’ve seen in a long time.
[0:11:45 – 0:11:47] Erik: 10 out of 10 can artwork.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:47] Erik: How many sips?
[0:11:47 – 0:11:49] Erik: Is that Impressionist, Eric?
[0:11:50 – 0:11:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:52] Adam: How many sips are you giving it?
[0:11:52 – 0:11:54] Adam: You’re giving it a 10 out of 10 on the artwork.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:58] Adam: I’m going to give it a 5 out of 5 sips.
[0:11:58 – 0:12:01] Erik: I’m going to give it a 5 out of 5 sips as well.
[0:12:01 – 0:12:07] Erik: Based on almost entirely what I thought it was going to taste like and what it actually tastes like.
[0:12:07 – 0:12:09] Erik: I was a little worried I wasn’t going to like it.
[0:12:09 – 0:12:13] Erik: Based on the fact that coffee, chocolate, and vanilla were mentioned.
[0:12:14 – 0:12:16] Adam: Not too much chocolate, but plenty of coffee.
[0:12:16 – 0:12:17] Erik: Lots of coffee.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:22] Erik: And it’s not too heavy, which I’m always worried about when I see all those words.
[0:12:23 – 0:12:25] Adam: All right, back to the loons.
[0:12:52 – 0:13:14] Erik: welcome to morning warmth positive reaffirmations of your life with spinny boone spin boone is here in studio a we’re talking the steve miller band this morning weren’t they great
[0:13:16 – 0:13:26] Adam: You’re going to want to go ahead and get your entry in to possibly win a seat on our exclusive cruise to Orlando in a bus.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:29] Erik: Cruise in a bus.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:31] Adam: We’re doing a land cruise to Orlando.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:37] Adam: You’re going to want to join us for seven days in paradise.
[0:13:37 – 0:13:39] Adam: Check our web blog for more details.
[0:13:40 – 0:13:42] Adam: What an exciting opportunity.
[0:13:43 – 0:13:45] Erik: We’ll see you at the Cheesecake Factory.
[0:13:45 – 0:13:46] Adam: That sounds nice.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:48] Erik: It’s going to be a great time.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:50] Erik: That’s been your morning warmth.
[0:13:51 – 0:13:52] Erik: You’re doing a great job.
[0:14:15 – 0:14:16] Adam: You can do a cold open.
[0:14:16 – 0:14:18] Adam: What you watching there, Wade?
[0:14:19 – 0:14:19] Adam: Gophers.
[0:14:20 – 0:14:20] Adam: That’s right.
[0:14:24 – 0:14:30] Adam: We’re here doing a little breakfast salad on Thomas.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:38] Adam: We were talking last night, all we packed was 18 different kinds of hot dogs and a bunch of smashed buns.
[0:14:40 – 0:14:49] Adam: But what we could really go for on night three already, and now especially morning four, is a nice Cobb salad.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:57] Adam: So we’re gonna definitely invest in looking into how to make a Cobb salad happen on day four.
[0:14:58 – 0:14:59] Adam: What’s going on with this thing?
[0:15:00 – 0:15:04] Adam: Anyways, I think maybe we do need a new can of gas, Eric.
[0:15:04 – 0:15:05] Erik: It’s feeling pretty light.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:29] Adam: pew pew pew pew pew pew anyhow this is episode welcome to tumble home a boundary waters podcast coming to you live in the field from thomas 13 this is episode 0151 of tumble home we’re getting a new can of gas out here cooking like dirty backpackers
[0:15:30 – 0:15:32] Adam: We’re definitely using a lot of gas.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:37] Adam: We stayed up pretty late last night and burned up pretty much all our wood.
[0:15:38 – 0:15:44] Adam: And it’s kind of windy, like blowing into camp this morning, and neither of us want to deal with doing a fire for breakfast.
[0:15:44 – 0:15:47] Adam: And frankly, neither of us even really want to deal with breakfast.
[0:15:47 – 0:15:54] Adam: We’re both full, but we got a lot of portaging today, so you got to have a good dinner.
[0:15:56 – 0:15:58] Adam: You got to eat a breakfast, Margie.
[0:15:59 – 0:16:01] Adam: You got to eat your eggs and beans.
[0:16:03 – 0:16:04] Adam: Oh, now we’re ripping them.
[0:16:04 – 0:16:05] Adam: So we got a half stick of butter.
[0:16:06 – 0:16:08] Adam: I’m going to just paint the picture for you here for breakfast.
[0:16:09 – 0:16:10] Adam: Here’s what we’re doing.
[0:16:10 – 0:16:12] Adam: We’re leaving the potatoes in the cooler.
[0:16:14 – 0:16:16] Adam: Got a half stick of butter going.
[0:16:16 – 0:16:20] Adam: Eric chopped up half a red onion and three scallion.
[0:16:21 – 0:16:24] Adam: And we got some dill on retainer still in the den.
[0:16:25 – 0:16:26] Adam: Calling him up.
[0:16:26 – 0:16:30] Adam: bringing in the rest of the fresh dill and the rest of the fresh cilantro.
[0:16:30 – 0:16:33] Adam: We’re pretty much going all our freshies we got left.
[0:16:34 – 0:16:42] Adam: And then we’re going to plop seven to eight egg whites worth because Eric sucked all the yolks out of the Nalgene in the night.
[0:16:43 – 0:16:44] Adam: In the night?
[0:16:44 – 0:16:49] Erik: Yeah, I reversed the bun blower and sucked those yolks right out of the container.
[0:16:49 – 0:16:50] Adam: You can do that.
[0:16:50 – 0:16:51] Adam: You alter the schnozzle.
[0:16:52 – 0:16:54] Adam: You can multipurpose that deal.
[0:16:55 – 0:16:59] Adam: So, yeah, we’re going to have, like, just a nice egg scramble.
[0:16:59 – 0:16:59] Adam: No potato.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:01] Erik: I don’t need any more filler.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:05] Erik: I’m, like, we’re eating, like, high.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:10] Erik: Not necessarily high on the hog, but, like, quantity on the hog.
[0:17:10 – 0:17:15] Adam: We got to have food to keep hauling for nine to ten days, I would say.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:16] Adam: We always do this.
[0:17:16 – 0:17:18] Adam: We always bring way too much food.
[0:17:19 – 0:17:20] Adam: We have so many snacks.
[0:17:20 – 0:17:22] Adam: The snack bag overfloweth.
[0:17:23 – 0:17:31] Erik: I’m probably still going to go out and kill a bunch of buffalo until I can’t carry any more meat and never, ever have to trade with the locals for fruit.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:33] Adam: Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:17:33 – 0:17:34] Adam: He’s got so many bullets.
[0:17:34 – 0:17:37] Adam: That’s an Oregon Trail reference getting on there.
[0:17:38 – 0:17:44] Adam: As always, Tumble Home is sponsored by our fine friends on Patreon.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:49] Adam: Without your support and love and affection, this show would not be possible.
[0:17:49 – 0:17:52] Adam: Thank you for helping us.
[0:17:52 – 0:18:22] Adam: be maintain being an independent a proud independent heritage podcast out here live in the field for you and for us it’s a little bit selfish we’re doing a four-day five-day trip just doing dropping whatever coming out here and camping leaving all our worries behind i haven’t thought about uh work in four days i haven’t checked the price of bitcoin in four days eric that’s incredible
[0:18:23 – 0:18:27] Erik: That is pretty incredible, the amount of cryptocurrency chat that you usually involve me in.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:31] Erik: I’m sure it’s really been a relief to not have to worry about it.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:33] Erik: But it has been.
[0:18:33 – 0:18:34] Erik: Thank you for asking.
[0:18:34 – 0:18:35] Erik: It has been.
[0:18:36 – 0:18:41] Erik: Also brought to you by Instant Coffee, which is now gone.
[0:18:41 – 0:18:44] Adam: And we’ll just go ahead and say get that thing.
[0:18:45 – 0:18:45] Erik: Morning.
[0:18:46 – 0:18:47] Erik: Morning red wine.
[0:18:47 – 0:18:49] Adam: What are you working with there?
[0:18:49 – 0:18:51] Adam: Is that a Merlot?
[0:18:53 – 0:18:55] SPEAKER_00: I’m not drinking any Merlot.
[0:18:56 – 0:18:57] Adam: Yeah, all right, I’ll drink it.
[0:18:58 – 0:18:59] Erik: It is a Merlot.
[0:19:01 – 0:19:06] Erik: We got maybe the windiest day on the trip so far.
[0:19:07 – 0:19:13] Erik: Coming out of the southwest, I do not have any real concerns over it.
[0:19:13 – 0:19:15] Erik: Essentially a tailwind getting out of here.
[0:19:16 – 0:19:20] Adam: The weather radio said 5 to 10 southwest.
[0:19:21 – 0:19:22] Adam: We did crank it up last night.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:50] Erik: couple times we cranked it up and uh yeah it sounds like five to ten southwest and then by like friday a record high temps in the 99 to 100 degree range yeah and we were talking out of here i don’t understand i do not know if i could handle a boundary waters trip if it was 98 degrees out here and that i mean nick lachey or no no 98 degrees needs to exist in the boundary waters
[0:19:53 – 0:19:54] Erik: How do you like that reference?
[0:19:55 – 0:19:58] Erik: I’m like the Dennis Miller of podcast references.
[0:19:58 – 0:20:01] Adam: The Steve Miller band of podcasts.
[0:20:01 – 0:20:02] Erik: Anybody out there?
[0:20:02 – 0:20:04] Erik: Is your favorite band the Steve Miller band?
[0:20:05 – 0:20:07] Erik: If so, tumblehomecasts at gmail.com.
[0:20:09 – 0:20:12] Erik: I can’t imagine that it’s anybody’s favorite band.
[0:20:12 – 0:20:22] Erik: This morning I woke up with whatever, for whatever reason, the song Fly Like an Eagle in my head.
[0:20:22 – 0:20:25] Erik: And then I was like, was that their only song?
[0:20:25 – 0:20:30] Erik: And then over the course of 20 minutes, I thought of four more.
[0:20:31 – 0:20:35] Erik: And Adam isn’t convinced that Take the Money and Run is a Steve Miller band song?
[0:20:35 – 0:20:36] Erik: It might be the Eagles.
[0:20:36 – 0:20:38] Erik: I’m on the fence, though, too.
[0:20:38 – 0:20:38] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:20:38 – 0:20:44] Erik: I feel like it is a Steve Miller band song, but it could very easily be an Eagles song as well.
[0:20:44 – 0:20:51] Adam: Is there anybody out there who the only band or group you’ll sing at karaoke is the Steve Miller band?
[0:20:52 – 0:20:53] Erik: Yeah, these are all good questions.
[0:20:53 – 0:21:00] Erik: I don’t know if these people exist, but we want to hear from you this weekend in Orlando when we’re all on the road coach.
[0:21:00 – 0:21:02] Adam: The motor coach to Orlando.
[0:21:03 – 0:21:05] Adam: We’re going to have a real fun time in paradise.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:08] Adam: Might stop over in Tampa to see the flamingos.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:09] Adam: We might.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:10] Adam: We might have time.
[0:21:11 – 0:21:12] Adam: It’s all up to you, though.
[0:21:12 – 0:21:14] Erik: If you’re good, we can go.
[0:21:15 – 0:21:16] Adam: You better behave.
[0:21:17 – 0:21:18] Adam: It’s day four of the trip.
[0:21:18 – 0:21:20] Adam: We’re sick of the shenanigans.
[0:21:22 – 0:21:24] Adam: Sit down and be quiet.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:25] Erik: This motor coach is a living hell.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:29] Adam: Motor coach isn’t driving itself to Jacksonville.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:34] Erik: So we’ll bring you up to speed, obviously, out on Thomas at this point.
[0:21:34 – 0:21:42] Erik: When we last left you, I think we were on Thomas, but we didn’t really give you a good description on how we got here and what we did.
[0:21:42 – 0:21:51] Erik: It was a shorter day up from Alice, but we did make the backtrack down to the fish dance pictured rocks.
[0:21:52 – 0:21:54] Erik: And that is how it is labeled on the Fisher map.
[0:21:54 – 0:21:56] Erik: I’m not sure if that’s a good description of them.
[0:21:57 – 0:21:59] Erik: I don’t know what is politically correct.
[0:21:59 – 0:22:00] Adam: Pictographs?
[0:22:00 – 0:22:00] Adam: Pictographs.
[0:22:01 – 0:22:03] Adam: But pictured rocks is acceptable.
[0:22:04 – 0:22:06] Erik: Is there anything that’s not acceptable?
[0:22:07 – 0:22:07] Adam: Yes.
[0:22:08 – 0:22:09] Erik: Ooh, I almost had you there.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:15] Adam: We’ve got to go ahead and say Fisher is the only one to list them.
[0:22:15 – 0:22:17] Adam: McKenzie and Nat Geo.
[0:22:17 – 0:22:19] Adam: No mention of any pictured rocks.
[0:22:20 – 0:22:30] Erik: So, yeah, we were on that beach site on Alice, got up, packed up, portaged without gear, just kind of the, like, I’m just going to leave my gear here for 45 minutes.
[0:22:32 – 0:22:35] Erik: I’m sure it’ll be fine, but also it’s sort of weird to just, like, leave gear.
[0:22:36 – 0:22:38] Adam: Leave all your possessions behind.
[0:22:38 – 0:22:39] Adam: Yeah.
[0:22:39 – 0:22:46] Erik: So yeah, there’s two portages off of Alice to the south into Fish Dance, and so we just packed up and left our gear in that first short portage.
[0:22:46 – 0:22:58] Erik: A couple of nice portages into Fish Dance, and then to the south, almost immediately, you wouldn’t necessarily believe it if you didn’t see it, because when you come into Fish Dance, it’s just like…
[0:22:58 – 0:23:21] Erik: yeah kind of a section of water with uh yeah some woods nothing really crazy no rocks and then if you paddle just to the south of that 95 rod portage it just opens up into this massive like sheer face cliff wall which just on its own is it was cool awesome but i think we kind of determined that
[0:23:22 – 0:23:27] Erik: It’s up there with the LLC pictos that we saw last year.
[0:23:27 – 0:23:36] Erik: Maybe not quite as, like, deep and red and defined, but some of the coolest actual, like, pictos that I think I’ve seen.
[0:23:36 – 0:23:37] Erik: Some that are creepy.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:41] Erik: Yeah, there’s definitely some interesting forms in there.
[0:23:42 – 0:23:42] Erik: We’re, uh…
[0:23:44 – 0:24:08] Erik: coming around i don’t want to describe them too much but there was there was one thing on there that may have been the red light you experienced which was just like a football shape with lines coming out of the top and the bottom yeah like uh uh yeah i i can still see it now i got a picture of it maybe we’ll post it on the gram later uh yeah i don’t know it was weird that
[0:24:09 – 0:24:10] Adam: To see that.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:18] Adam: And then the Mamaguese that was there was like the gangliest, very army, very leggy.
[0:24:18 – 0:24:22] Adam: It was a real leggy Mamaguese, but almost like an oblong head, too.
[0:24:23 – 0:24:25] Adam: Borderline looked like an alien, not going to lie.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:27] Erik: Yeah, it was very, very…
[0:24:27 – 0:24:27] Erik: Looked like a gray.
[0:24:27 – 0:24:29] Erik: Looked like a gray, I was just going to say that, yep.
[0:24:30 – 0:24:32] Erik: And then one of the other cool…
[0:24:34 – 0:25:03] Adam: pictos that we saw which was very like very defined but also like very unique like i’ve never seen that the gate yeah it’s a gate slash it looks like a fire grate honestly but it’s a gate i believe reading from uh furtman mansplains at all uh the magic on the rocks book that uh furtman said is some sort of like lodge which would signify a spiritual like awakening but uh
[0:25:04 – 0:25:08] Adam: I have to recheck my notes on that one, but that one was very vivid.
[0:25:09 – 0:25:10] Adam: Yes, it was.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:16] Adam: On its own, and its own little mini panel, too, which also does imply great significance, I believe.
[0:25:17 – 0:25:18] Erik: Yeah, there was nothing else around it.
[0:25:18 – 0:25:20] Adam: It was on its own.
[0:25:20 – 0:25:24] Adam: There was a couple critters, which I always like to see the critter ones.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:31] Adam: One of them looked like a weird elephant with pig fingers, and maybe, I’m guessing it was some sort of bear, though.
[0:25:32 – 0:25:32] Adam: Probably.
[0:25:33 – 0:25:36] Erik: And then there was just the classic two people in a canoe.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:36] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[0:25:37 – 0:25:45] Erik: And then the ones that get me the most, the ones that give me the Jimmy feelings is just the hand prints.
[0:25:45 – 0:25:46] Erik: For sure.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:48] Erik: Especially because they were very small.
[0:25:48 – 0:25:49] Erik: Yeah, they were small.
[0:25:50 – 0:25:51] Erik: Child’s hands.
[0:25:51 – 0:25:54] Erik: Implying that they were either children or somebody just had small hands.
[0:25:55 – 0:25:58] Erik: Petite hands, feminine steps.
[0:25:59 – 0:26:03] Erik: So I think it was entirely worth it to go down there.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:05] Adam: It was really worth it.
[0:26:06 – 0:26:08] Adam: I was going back and forth on it.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:10] Adam: Do we want to go backwards?
[0:26:10 – 0:26:12] Adam: I don’t like going backwards if I can avoid it.
[0:26:12 – 0:26:19] Erik: Yeah, honestly, it didn’t feel good right away in the morning to paddle away from where we were eventually going to be going.
[0:26:19 – 0:26:23] Adam: It was dead calm, though, and I was driven to see these pictos.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:27] Adam: After the experience on Alice, I was feeling magical and needed to see them.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:29] Erik: It was pretty magical.
[0:26:29 – 0:26:30] Adam: How many eggs do you want?
[0:26:30 – 0:26:31] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:26:31 – 0:26:33] Erik: Just plop until the plopping stops.
[0:26:33 – 0:26:36] Adam: I think we got five.
[0:26:37 – 0:26:38] Erik: Looks perfect.
[0:26:38 – 0:26:39] Erik: Maybe I’ll do one more.
[0:26:39 – 0:26:40] Erik: One more.
[0:26:40 – 0:26:42] Erik: Plopping eggs on morning four.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:46] Adam: We’re having egg white omelets out here.
[0:26:46 – 0:26:48] Adam: No salad, but I wish we did have a salad.
[0:26:49 – 0:26:50] Adam: Yeah, the pictos are sweet.
[0:26:50 – 0:26:52] Erik: The pictos were awesome.
[0:26:52 – 0:26:57] Erik: We’ll boil it down and just say if you’re in the area, highly recommended.
[0:26:57 – 0:27:03] Adam: Yeah, shout out to a friend of the show on Instagram who suggested, like, you going to dance?
[0:27:04 – 0:27:04] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:27:04 – 0:27:06] Adam: And I was looking into it at the time.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:07] Adam: I was like, yeah, absolutely.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:08] Adam: I think we got it.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:10] Adam: It’s high on the list, I think is what it said.
[0:27:11 – 0:27:15] Adam: So, you know, nothing’s a guarantee, but I was really happy we made it.
[0:27:17 – 0:27:22] Adam: We did recommend it, too, to the aluminum boys that we were interacting with.
[0:27:22 – 0:27:36] Adam: We were kind of leapfrogging these aluminum boys on Insula, and we did give them the, hey, if you’re in the neighborhood, because I think they said they’re on a six-day trip, like, hey, you should definitely get to Fish Dance.
[0:27:36 – 0:27:41] Adam: We’re recommending it to people before we even saw them, based on the recommendations of others.
[0:27:41 – 0:27:42] Erik: Yep.
[0:27:42 – 0:27:45] Adam: But definitely a good recommendation.
[0:27:45 – 0:27:46] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:48] Erik: You know, it was well worth it.
[0:27:48 – 0:27:51] Erik: But then we turned back.
[0:27:52 – 0:28:16] Erik: recollected our gear and by the time we were heading back past our beach campsite somebody was like procuring it it must have been like 11 in the morning somebody was just shutting her down because that sweet beach campsite was just beckoning them i would yeah i can’t argue with that decision yeah and then on the way out i think every other site that we went by on that eastern shore of alice including those two peninsula sites were taken
[0:28:17 – 0:28:17] SPEAKER_00: It was packed.
[0:28:18 – 0:28:18] SPEAKER_00: It was packed.
[0:28:18 – 0:28:20] Erik: There was multiple canoes out fishing.
[0:28:20 – 0:28:32] Erik: It was, yeah, like, it felt like, man, we definitely did not have Alice to ourselves as opposed to how it felt like out here last night where we definitely had this lower half of Thomas to ourselves.
[0:28:32 – 0:28:35] Erik: Like, I did not get a sense that there was anybody else down here.
[0:28:36 – 0:28:36] Erik: Yeah, not a peep.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:38] Erik: Not a peep down here.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:39] Erik: Not a peep.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:44] Erik: No campfires in the distance, no lights of any color, red or otherwise.
[0:28:44 – 0:28:48] Adam: Nobody else cranking the radio listening to AM dial, that’s for sure.
[0:28:49 – 0:28:49] Adam: No.
[0:28:50 – 0:28:55] Erik: But, yeah, we up through the Narrows and Alice and then the short little portage up into Kakabik.
[0:28:56 – 0:29:05] Erik: And then the relatively straightforward 232 on the McKenzie, 240 on the Fisher, Kakabik to Thomas portage, the longest of the trip.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:14] Erik: Straight forward into the gin-clear waters of Thomas and that nice, nice beach landing.
[0:29:14 – 0:29:17] Adam: Always sweet after a long portage to come out to a beautiful beach landing.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:29:19 – 0:29:19] Erik: That was nice.
[0:29:19 – 0:29:23] Erik: I just took my chacos off immediately and just got into beach mode.
[0:29:23 – 0:29:26] Adam: Here’s a pro tip for you breakfast cooks out there.
[0:29:27 – 0:29:29] Adam: Normally, I had to shut this thing down.
[0:29:29 – 0:29:34] Adam: I like my eggs a little, even for scramblies, like a little soft scramble.
[0:29:34 – 0:29:40] Adam: But being as it is, it’s day four, practicing a little egg safety for professional cooks out there.
[0:29:40 – 0:29:44] Adam: We’re going to get these eggs up to 165 degrees.
[0:29:44 – 0:29:45] Adam: I got my thermometer here.
[0:29:45 – 0:29:46] Adam: Infrared thermometer.
[0:29:46 – 0:29:50] Adam: We’re going to make sure we get these nice and cooked.
[0:29:50 – 0:29:52] Adam: We do have some hot sauce and mayonnaise packets.
[0:29:52 – 0:29:55] Adam: And as we said, the fresh dill is on standby.
[0:29:56 – 0:29:58] Erik: Fresh dill is on standby.
[0:29:58 – 0:30:06] Erik: We then made it to the southwest of the 232 rod portage into Thomas out onto the point.
[0:30:06 – 0:30:08] Erik: If you’re following along at home, you’ll see it.
[0:30:08 – 0:30:23] Erik: It’s just north and east of an island with two campsites on it, which we did actually kind of, you know, beggared and choosered our way over to the island just to see if maybe, just maybe, the island site would have been nicer because…
[0:30:24 – 0:30:34] Erik: Off in that distance, we could see these massive erratics that had fallen into the lake that have probably the largest and brightest orange lichen on them.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:36] Erik: And so those were kind of calling us in.
[0:30:37 – 0:30:44] Erik: But upon closer inspection, the western site on the island was not as nice as where we are now.
[0:30:45 – 0:30:49] Erik: And we will get into a full review of this site.
[0:30:49 – 0:30:54] Erik: I don’t know if this is our third A in a row, but it’s close.
[0:30:55 – 0:31:01] Erik: And breakfast is done, and I might need to make a latrine trot before breakfast, so we’re going to leave it there.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:02] Adam: It’s a real light frittata.
[0:31:03 – 0:31:04] Adam: No potatoes in this frittata.
[0:31:05 – 0:31:06] Adam: Not even a frittata then, is it?
[0:31:06 – 0:31:06] Adam: Nope.
[0:31:06 – 0:31:08] Adam: More of a breakfast scrambler.
[0:31:08 – 0:31:09] Erik: It’s just scrambled eggs.
[0:31:09 – 0:31:15] Erik: I’m going to reach out and grab you.
[0:31:18 – 0:31:24] Erik: A well-known scientist, some say it was Bertrand Russell, once gave a public lecture on astronomy.
[0:31:25 – 0:31:33] Erik: He described how the Earth orbits around the Sun, and how the Sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
[0:31:34 – 0:31:40] Erik: At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said, What you have told us is rubbish.
[0:31:41 – 0:31:45] SPEAKER_00: The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.
[0:31:46 – 0:31:51] Erik: The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, What is the tortoise standing on?
[0:31:52 – 0:31:56] SPEAKER_00: You’re very clever, young man, very clever indeed, said the old lady.
[0:31:57 – 0:31:59] SPEAKER_00: But it’s turtles all the way down!
[0:32:05 – 0:32:08] Erik: We need to take a moment of silence.
[0:32:09 – 0:32:13] Erik: The one-year anniversary of the horrible loss.
[0:32:14 – 0:32:15] Erik: This one’s for you, Toadie.
[0:32:16 – 0:32:17] Erik: The Kweet gang misses you.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:18] Erik: Pour one out.
[0:32:24 – 0:32:24] Adam: Ashes for the Kweets.
[0:32:27 – 0:32:30] Erik: Just about to disembark here from Tommy13.
[0:32:34 – 0:32:38] Adam: We’re going to, of course, give you our in-the-field campsite review.
[0:32:39 – 0:32:43] Adam: Before we get to that, though, going to give a little fishing update.
[0:32:44 – 0:32:46] Adam: Yeah, laugh all you want.
[0:32:46 – 0:32:51] Adam: We’re still on the skunkaroo and didn’t somehow manage to not catch a fish on Thomas.
[0:32:52 – 0:32:59] Adam: But to be fair to the fish, we didn’t really try that hard, so don’t pat yourselves on your vents too hard, Namekush.
[0:32:59 – 0:33:02] Adam: I’d also go ahead and say, Eric, that…
[0:33:03 – 0:33:04] Adam: It’s way too warm.
[0:33:04 – 0:33:08] Adam: We both swam on Alice, and Eric was jumping off cliffs yesterday.
[0:33:09 – 0:33:11] Adam: The days of fishing for cush are over.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:12] Adam: Especially from shore.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:13] Adam: They’re out deep.
[0:33:13 – 0:33:21] Adam: Although, now that the sun’s back up higher, and I’m looking off this cliff, we were probably fishing in 50 feet of water right off the campsite here.
[0:33:21 – 0:33:22] Adam: We picked a good one.
[0:33:23 – 0:33:26] Adam: And the salted minnows I was pretty pleased with.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:30] Adam: I just want to say I tried a couple different varieties of rigs.
[0:33:30 – 0:33:32] Adam: But here’s what I basically ended.
[0:33:32 – 0:33:37] Adam: Well, I started with lanky weights, which are like these long stick looking weights that are supposed to be able to slide.
[0:33:37 – 0:33:41] Adam: But it turns out they just like twist up somehow and like never slide.
[0:33:42 – 0:33:49] Adam: But I will end up getting that one out a few times and got it back and then I finally did lose it, horrendous snag.
[0:33:50 – 0:33:55] Adam: So then I went to the little, it looks like a little bullet weight, slidey bullet weights.
[0:33:56 – 0:33:58] Adam: I think this is more of a Carolina rig.
[0:34:00 – 0:34:07] Adam: And hooked that up and then I was using Ed’s floaty jigs on like a fluorocarbon leader.
[0:34:09 – 0:34:35] Adam: version one and then I wasn’t getting any action but the minnows like I said they they held up really nicely like they’re very like firm stayed on the hook good multiple casts on a few of them that I went off the pink and white floaty jigs to like a smaller it’s like Northland gumdrop floaty jig and what I would call the the pattern is just tumble home which is also Eric’s favorite Rapala color and
[0:34:36 – 0:34:37] Adam: What’s it called in Rapala?
[0:34:37 – 0:34:38] Adam: It’s like hot steel.
[0:34:38 – 0:34:39] Adam: Hot, is it?
[0:34:40 – 0:34:40] Adam: Or cold steel.
[0:34:41 – 0:34:41] Adam: It’s one of those.
[0:34:42 – 0:34:52] Adam: So I went with that and threw it in with like the biggest salted chub I had in the arsenal and hooked it on, set up the rock.
[0:34:52 – 0:34:55] Adam: And literally before I even like, I barely got back over to my chair and sat down.
[0:34:57 – 0:35:03] Adam: And Eric heard it because I had to like, basically I just like had set the drag way down as low as it could go.
[0:35:05 – 0:35:09] Adam: And just so then you’d hear it be able to take line off and Eric both heard it take line off.
[0:35:09 – 0:35:13] Adam: And then I saw like the rod tip going and we both thought the rod was going in the drink.
[0:35:13 – 0:35:23] Erik: Yeah, and we got over to it just in time, and you did have the wherewithal to crank the drag back down so that if a hook set would have happened, you would have actually set a hook.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:28] Erik: But I think that what happened is the line got, like, pulled around a boulder.
[0:35:28 – 0:35:32] Erik: So, like, as soon as you even attempted setting the hook, it just, like, clean cut the line.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:36] Adam: Yeah, it was an instant break on the braid, the backing braid, honestly.
[0:35:36 – 0:35:37] Adam: So I lost some line on that one.
[0:35:38 – 0:35:46] Adam: I re-rigged one more time, and I left that thing sitting there basically until dark, and there was no further action from Thomas.
[0:35:46 – 0:35:50] Adam: We gave it a good couple hours worth of actually having lions in the waters.
[0:35:50 – 0:35:51] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:52] Adam: Yeah, that was really it.
[0:35:52 – 0:35:53] Adam: The bobber, I don’t think, ever went down.
[0:35:53 – 0:35:59] Adam: One time we looked, and the bobber had been consistently drifting over to the right slash back to the east, I guess.
[0:36:01 – 0:36:04] Adam: And at one time I came over here and it was like way over to the left though.
[0:36:04 – 0:36:08] Adam: And I was like, well, neither of us saw it go down, but it was almost implied that something had to have taken it over there.
[0:36:09 – 0:36:13] Adam: There’s just no way like it would have betrayed the wind and like the current drift pattern.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:21] Adam: So that was a little odd, but yeah, so still no fish, but, uh, you know, we got enough food to go like eight more days still.
[0:36:21 – 0:36:22] Adam: And this is day four.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:26] Adam: Like we easily do a two week trip with the amount of provisions we have in our barrels.
[0:36:26 – 0:36:27] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:27 – 0:36:28] Adam: Monk would be proud.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:29] Adam: Monk.
[0:36:29 – 0:36:30] Adam: Would be proud.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:32] Adam: Monk is proud.
[0:36:32 – 0:36:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:33 – 0:36:33] Adam: Shout out to Monk.
[0:36:34 – 0:36:36] Adam: Once again, favorite Paragus employee.
[0:36:36 – 0:36:37] Adam: Check him out.
[0:36:38 – 0:36:45] Adam: Ask him where they have a baby axe on display, but if you ask him politely, he’ll show you the baby, baby axe.
[0:36:45 – 0:36:46] Erik: Even smaller than the baby.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:46] Adam: It’s smaller.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:49] Adam: It’s like, yeah, a little tiny axe for twigs only.
[0:36:49 – 0:36:51] Adam: That one’s for twig stoves, Monk.
[0:36:52 – 0:36:52] Adam: We know.
[0:36:53 – 0:36:54] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:54 – 0:36:55] Erik: Campsite review?
[0:36:55 – 0:36:57] Adam: Yeah, we’ll get into the campsite review.
[0:36:57 – 0:37:00] Adam: So yeah, the fishing looked promising.
[0:37:00 – 0:37:07] Adam: We’re on a really steep drop off here and sitting up on some beautiful sitting rocks.
[0:37:07 – 0:37:10] Adam: But the landing is over back behind us here.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:15] Adam: There’s a dual channel sandy gravel landing.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:16] Adam: It’s pretty nice.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:21] Erik: This kind of reminds me of that campsite from two years ago, the Heart of the Park trip on Little Sag.
[0:37:21 – 0:37:22] Adam: Little Sag, yeah.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:28] Erik: First site where there was that lower, kind of nicer, gravelly landing, and then you climb up to a nice little overlook.
[0:37:28 – 0:37:31] Adam: Yeah, it’s facing pretty much the exact same direction as that site as well.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:38] Adam: And kind of looking at the same kind of scene, I would say.
[0:37:38 – 0:37:39] Erik: Same sort of view.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:40] Erik: Pretty positive.
[0:37:40 – 0:37:43] Erik: We were the only ones down here last night, so that was an added bonus.
[0:37:43 – 0:37:46] Erik: But the site itself, yeah, I don’t know if I can go full A, but…
[0:37:47 – 0:37:51] Adam: The fire grade is old and the legs are decrepit, but it served us well.
[0:37:51 – 0:37:53] Adam: We had a pretty nice fire going.
[0:37:54 – 0:38:01] Adam: We had a great view of the stars and the planets last night, which are on a fixed axis and never oscillate.
[0:38:01 – 0:38:02] Erik: Nope, never.
[0:38:02 – 0:38:05] Adam: They just go around and around on the same angle the whole time.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:08] Adam: And we could see them all last night.
[0:38:08 – 0:38:09] Adam: Venus, Jupiter…
[0:38:10 – 0:38:28] Adam: mars yep more we’ve seen them all so that was nice uh plenty of tent options plenty of hammock options although no big trees no big trees and unfortunately i ended up hanging in a birch to balsam combo and i think you did double balsam is this right
[0:38:28 – 0:38:32] Erik: Yeah, you don’t want to do the reverse polarity of balsam to birch like you did.
[0:38:32 – 0:38:35] Erik: You just want to either go all balsam or all birch.
[0:38:35 – 0:38:37] Adam: We both got sticky.
[0:38:38 – 0:38:40] Adam: We got residue on our straps now.
[0:38:40 – 0:38:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:38:41 – 0:38:41] Erik: You sure do.
[0:38:41 – 0:38:45] Erik: It’s no white pine set or, gosh, no cedar set, I’ll tell you that much.
[0:38:46 – 0:39:00] Adam: The one problem here was, where we were fishing over in the shade to start the day, over yonder, that, we, they had, like, a small hop-down rock you could have gotten to, like, to land something, but, like, honest to God, like, I’m assuming what bit was probably a large pike, because, uh…
[0:39:01 – 0:39:26] Adam: i don’t know like i said i think we’re i think we’re a couple weeks too late on the name of kush to be real the char they’re too deep i just don’t see it really happening from shore when you’re when you’re in the swimming temperatures and like we’re past the first two waves of black flies already eric’s swimming um i just think we’re probably a little late on the shoreline trout thing but uh excuse me char fact check that on the fly
[0:39:27 – 0:39:30] Adam: Um, but so I’m thinking, cause it was like literally hit on the drop.
[0:39:30 – 0:39:32] Adam: So we’re both thinking like probably a big pike.
[0:39:33 – 0:39:34] Adam: I asked the guy, Eric, what would we have done?
[0:39:34 – 0:39:36] Adam: And I hooked into like a 33 inch pike right here.
[0:39:37 – 0:39:38] Adam: Cause they were up on top of a cliff.
[0:39:38 – 0:39:41] Adam: There’s really no easy way down without we’re joking.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:44] Adam: Like you’d have to go over there and I have to like throw you the rod with the fish on it.
[0:39:44 – 0:40:01] Erik: active rod toss never tried that before no that would have been tumble home first but yeah it’s like a i would say at least 10 foot cliff shelf just the whole way around it’s nice and flat so it does give you a commanding view but yeah fishing we’ve kind of gone from one extreme to the other with the sand beach on alice to like cliff
[0:40:02 – 0:40:12] Erik: fishing where you literally would need a 12-foot bamboo rod and nylon steel core 100-pound test to rip something out of the water from that height.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:17] Adam: Yeah, we did not bring the big net with the extended arm attachment either.
[0:40:17 – 0:40:18] Erik: No gaff either?
[0:40:18 – 0:40:19] Adam: No large gaff.
[0:40:19 – 0:40:22] Adam: You would need a large gaff to fish this spot effectively.
[0:40:22 – 0:40:25] Adam: But like I said, it’s got a really insane-looking drop-off.
[0:40:25 – 0:40:29] Adam: It would be set out there, and then I’d go, I’m going to check it.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:30] Adam: I’d give it like an hour.
[0:40:31 – 0:40:32] Adam: No action.
[0:40:32 – 0:40:34] Adam: I’d go, I’m going to check it, make sure we’re sitting all right.
[0:40:34 – 0:40:38] Adam: And I’d pull them up, and the angle of line coming out of the drink was like.
[0:40:39 – 0:40:40] Erik: Beyond 45.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:42] Adam: No, it’s like, how deep is it out there?
[0:40:42 – 0:40:43] Adam: This is ridiculous.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:45] Adam: It’s right there, but it’s just coming up, straight up.
[0:40:46 – 0:40:46] Erik: Yeah.
[0:40:47 – 0:40:47] Erik: A little spooky.
[0:40:47 – 0:40:50] Erik: It does make for a nice elevated view.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:53] Erik: We had some perfect west breezes.
[0:40:53 – 0:40:55] Erik: Have not really been affected by any bugs.
[0:40:55 – 0:40:56] Erik: I don’t know if we’ve mentioned that yet.
[0:40:56 – 0:40:58] Erik: Bug report, relatively manageable.
[0:40:59 – 0:41:01] Adam: We had some no-see-ums, getting a little blood.
[0:41:02 – 0:41:04] Adam: But yeah, overall, very light bug.
[0:41:04 – 0:41:05] Erik: Very light bug.
[0:41:06 – 0:41:10] Erik: The head net has been packed with for the third straight year and has not been deployed yet.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:12] Adam: Yeah, no head nets being worn.
[0:41:12 – 0:41:14] Adam: Even Eric went unsheathed.
[0:41:15 – 0:41:17] Adam: No bug net on the hammock even last night.
[0:41:18 – 0:41:20] Erik: A couple of little morning skeeters buzzing around.
[0:41:20 – 0:41:26] Erik: More than anything else, they just like the humming next to your ear keeps you awake more than like them actually affecting you.
[0:41:26 – 0:41:27] Adam: They can’t actually get at you, yeah.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:28] Adam: It was warm last night too.
[0:41:28 – 0:41:32] Adam: Like I did try, we think we both tried to like throw the flap over this morning.
[0:41:32 – 0:41:36] Adam: trying to keep those morning skaters out, but it was like too hot with the flap over.
[0:41:36 – 0:41:36] Erik: Yeah.
[0:41:37 – 0:41:41] Adam: I was actually finally put on long johns before bed last night, and it was by far the warmest night.
[0:41:42 – 0:41:43] Adam: My feet weren’t even close to cold.
[0:41:44 – 0:41:45] Adam: So it must have been in the 50s last night.
[0:41:46 – 0:41:46] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:41:47 – 0:41:50] Erik: It’s only supposed to get warmer, and boy, oh, boy, I think we’re getting out just in time.
[0:41:50 – 0:41:52] Erik: No 98-degree camping for me.
[0:41:53 – 0:41:55] Adam: What was the guy’s name that was in 98 degrees?
[0:41:55 – 0:41:56] Adam: Lachey?
[0:41:56 – 0:41:57] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
[0:41:58 – 0:41:58] SPEAKER_00: Nick.
[0:41:59 – 0:42:01] SPEAKER_00: Do-do-do-do-do.
[0:42:02 – 0:42:02] Erik: Lachey.
[0:42:03 – 0:42:04] Erik: We’re not prepared to get Lacheyed out here.
[0:42:05 – 0:42:08] Adam: That’ll be our next celebrity we’re inviting on the show.
[0:42:08 – 0:42:11] Adam: Nick Lachey, if you’re listening, reach out to us.
[0:42:12 – 0:42:14] Adam: tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:42:14 – 0:42:15] Adam: Nick, are you out there?
[0:42:16 – 0:42:16] Adam: Nick?
[0:42:16 – 0:42:17] Adam: We’d love to take you camping.
[0:42:18 – 0:42:18] Adam: You can come out.
[0:42:19 – 0:42:20] Adam: You seem cool.
[0:42:21 – 0:42:22] Adam: Do you know any tricks about fishing?
[0:42:22 – 0:42:24] Adam: Anyways, I feel like we let T down, though.
[0:42:25 – 0:42:28] Adam: We got out here probably two weeks too late this year.
[0:42:28 – 0:42:29] Adam: I used to always early.
[0:42:29 – 0:42:31] Adam: It’s just been ahead of schedule by two weeks.
[0:42:31 – 0:42:35] Adam: We were talking about this almost complete lack of snowfall this winter.
[0:42:36 – 0:42:41] Adam: I think we’re a little too late on the Namekush, so sorry, T. We’re probably not going to have any.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:46] Adam: I’ll throw some minnows out when we get to Ensign, but I’m not even sure there’s lake trout in Ensign.
[0:42:46 – 0:42:47] Adam: Anybody out there know?
[0:42:47 – 0:42:50] Adam: Is there a Namekush in Ensign?
[0:42:50 – 0:42:51] Adam: Any char out there?
[0:42:52 – 0:42:57] Erik: We definitely know that there’s walleye in there, so we’re going to get some slip bobbers in for the last hurrah and a hopeful fish dinner.
[0:42:58 – 0:43:04] Adam: Yeah, we got everything we need for a fish dinner, including tartar and a whole extra pack of fresh dill still waiting.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:05] Adam: Double dill.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:06] Adam: Double dill, always.
[0:43:06 – 0:43:09] Adam: Now go with one thing of dill when you can get two.
[0:43:09 – 0:43:12] Adam: That’s a message from your friends at Tummel Home.
[0:43:13 – 0:43:16] Adam: And what are we going to get on the grade here, Eric?
[0:43:16 – 0:43:19] Adam: I would say it’s a B.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Adam: Solid B?
[0:43:20 – 0:43:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:23] Adam: If we had caught a fish, maybe that would have bumped it.
[0:43:24 – 0:43:25] Adam: But I’m not going to say no.
[0:43:25 – 0:43:26] Adam: It’s just a solid B.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:27] Erik: It’s a little scorchy here too.
[0:43:27 – 0:43:31] Erik: Like by the time the sun comes over the trees, you’re just like, you’re sort of at the mercy.
[0:43:32 – 0:43:36] Erik: There’s some trees, but you got to be wary at this site to not get zotted.
[0:43:37 – 0:43:39] Adam: Truer words were nair spoke.
[0:43:40 – 0:43:41] Adam: True words, Renee, are spoke.
[0:43:42 – 0:43:43] Adam: We’re about packed up here.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:45] Adam: Pretty much ready to roll, actually.
[0:43:46 – 0:43:50] Adam: Might just have a little bit more refreshment and then hit the trail.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:53] Adam: Going hard up to Hatchet.
[0:43:53 – 0:43:58] Adam: Five small portages just to get to Hatchet, and then another portage out of there to get to Ima.
[0:43:58 – 0:43:58] UNKNOWN: Ima.
[0:43:59 – 0:44:08] Adam: And then it looks like on the McKenzie, I was looking at the McKenzie this morning, and it looks like most of the portages that are going over today are listed as rapids.
[0:44:09 – 0:44:12] Adam: And then the one from Iama to Jordan says Falls.
[0:44:13 – 0:44:13] Adam: Falls.
[0:44:13 – 0:44:15] Adam: We might stop in at the Falls for a lunch break.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:24] Adam: And there is reportedly more pictured rocks on Jordan, although these are not supposed to be as Trey Tasty ammo, but we’re going to look for them.
[0:44:24 – 0:44:27] Adam: A lot of people on the ones on Jordan especially are like,
[0:44:27 – 0:44:30] Adam: We were joking yesterday, like, how could anybody come down to Fish Dance?
[0:44:30 – 0:44:32] Adam: Like, we’d heard they’re pretty faded.
[0:44:32 – 0:44:33] Adam: I don’t know, hard to find.
[0:44:33 – 0:44:35] Adam: It’s like, how can anybody come down here and not find these?
[0:44:35 – 0:44:36] Adam: They’re clear as day.
[0:44:37 – 0:44:38] Adam: Those are very nice.
[0:44:38 – 0:44:40] Adam: I’ve heard the ones on Jordan are a little hard to find, though.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:45] Adam: And they’re, like, mislabeled, possibly, even in a few of the guides out there.
[0:44:46 – 0:44:53] Adam: But from everything I was reading, they’re in the narrows, like, once we get into Jordan from IMA, below the falls.
[0:44:53 – 0:44:55] Adam: So we’re going to look for those today, too.
[0:44:56 – 0:45:20] Adam: um just going back to those fish dance ones i would say they’re not as good as hegman or lack latroy but uh they’re pretty dang good they’re tasty pictos i would say the pictos are a pluses yep for sure but yeah i i’m i can feel you on a b here maybe b plus but i don’t know a run of a’s is would uh would i even maybe we get a b plus if we caught one you know
[0:45:20 – 0:45:45] Erik: but i don’t know considering the other campsites we’ve seen in the area this is probably the nicest one in this this section sector yeah we’re you know it’s definitely better than the island ones over there yeah i think so we’re definitely a little bit more on the beggar side of choosers or whatever that statement means but yeah i think uh this would serve most people just fine you want to make any bold predictions for day four
[0:45:45 – 0:45:48] Erik: How many times are we going to hear Dodd yelled across the lake?
[0:45:49 – 0:45:50] Adam: We’re probably going to run into more people for sure.
[0:45:50 – 0:45:54] Adam: We just had two people buzz by us here while we were doing the campsite report.
[0:45:55 – 0:45:57] Adam: I’m sorry, four people in two canoes.
[0:45:57 – 0:46:00] Adam: They’re going to look at that island site, it looks like.
[0:46:00 – 0:46:05] Erik: Maybe they’re just going over to look at those cool orange erratics.
[0:46:05 – 0:46:06] Adam: Maybe they are.
[0:46:06 – 0:46:07] Adam: They’re very worthy of attention.
[0:46:09 – 0:46:10] Adam: A visit, for sure.
[0:46:11 – 0:46:15] Adam: My bold prediction, are we going to end up, well, here’s, I have a.
[0:46:15 – 0:46:18] Erik: The over-under on Dodds yelled across the lake.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:18] Erik: Four.
[0:46:19 – 0:46:20] Erik: You’re putting it at four?
[0:46:20 – 0:46:22] Adam: Four is the over-under on yelled Dodds.
[0:46:23 – 0:46:25] Adam: And we will never allow Gordy.
[0:46:25 – 0:46:28] Adam: We would never raise him like that to yell loudly across the lake.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:31] Adam: So Gordy won’t be contributing to that at all.
[0:46:31 – 0:46:35] Adam: First son of the show, Gordy, is still hanging in there looking great.
[0:46:36 – 0:46:38] Adam: He had potatoes in his frittata this morning.
[0:46:39 – 0:46:44] Adam: Are we going to end up on the east end of Henson, or are we going to make it to Isle des Sives?
[0:46:45 – 0:46:53] Erik: I prefer to be on the east side, but knowing that we’ve got a relatively early tow tomorrow, it might be nicer to be on the west end just to jet boogie earlier.
[0:46:54 – 0:47:05] Adam: I asked Eric if he wanted to go for the solo site on Splash just to avoid Ensign, but I think it was determined that no, we owe it to ourselves and to the listeners to crash pad on Ensign.
[0:47:05 – 0:47:06] Erik: We have to.
[0:47:06 – 0:47:09] Adam: I’m aiming for the Isle of Seve.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:12] Adam: But is it Seve or Sif?
[0:47:13 – 0:47:13] Adam: Sif.
[0:47:13 – 0:47:14] Adam: Isle de Sif.
[0:47:15 – 0:47:17] Adam: And Eric wants the east side.
[0:47:17 – 0:47:19] Adam: We’re going to see how those east side ones look first.
[0:47:19 – 0:47:25] Adam: And the 10-mile-an-hour southwest wind that was talked about, nonexistent so far.
[0:47:25 – 0:47:26] Adam: Still pretty calm out here.
[0:47:26 – 0:47:28] Adam: It was a little gusty this morning.
[0:47:29 – 0:47:30] Adam: But it’s looking pretty nice right now.
[0:47:30 – 0:47:32] Adam: It’s tailwind out of Thomas for sure.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:33] Erik: Tailwind out of Thomas.
[0:47:33 – 0:47:36] Erik: Let’s go on, get on that watery trail.
[0:47:36 – 0:47:39] Adam: All right, we’ll check in with you probably, I would say, from Ensign.
[0:47:39 – 0:47:43] Adam: So we’ll see what happened next up on Tumble Home.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:46] Adam: What happened in your opinion exactly?
[0:47:48 – 0:47:49] Adam: That’s your first question?
[0:47:51 – 0:47:53] Erik: Hot town, summer in the city.
[0:47:55 – 0:47:59] Erik: Is your back of your neck getting dirt and gritty?
[0:47:59 – 0:48:01] Erik: It is.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:02] Erik: It is.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:03] Erik: Out here with the Kweet Gang.
[0:48:03 – 0:48:11] Erik: This snack track is brought to you by Dan and Sogo Snacks.
[0:48:11 – 0:48:14] Erik: Meat sticks from Decorah.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:15] Erik: Down there.
[0:48:15 – 0:48:16] Erik: Meat capital of the world.
[0:48:17 – 0:48:20] Erik: Meat and IPA capital of Iowa, at least.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:21] Adam: For sure.
[0:48:21 – 0:48:24] Adam: We were discussing yesterday how they got the
[0:48:25 – 0:48:26] Adam: What was the degree at Luther?
[0:48:27 – 0:48:28] Adam: Meat sciences?
[0:48:29 – 0:48:31] Adam: Yes.
[0:48:31 – 0:48:33] Adam: Snack stick industries.
[0:48:34 – 0:48:35] Erik: Snack stick industries.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:38] Erik: Yeah, no, these honestly were sent to us from Dan.
[0:48:38 – 0:48:39] Erik: Thanks.
[0:48:39 – 0:48:44] Erik: A whole box of meat sticks, snacks, bits, grass-fed, and or free-range.
[0:48:45 – 0:48:47] Erik: Or, I don’t know, the and isn’t in there.
[0:48:47 – 0:48:50] Adam: Yeah, I had some disc golfing already.
[0:48:50 – 0:48:51] Erik: I’ve got a…
[0:48:52 – 0:48:53] Adam: They’re pretty good turkey sticks.
[0:48:53 – 0:48:55] Erik: A Tex-Mex smoked snack stick.
[0:48:56 – 0:48:57] Erik: You’ve got a chimichurri.
[0:48:57 – 0:48:58] Erik: Got chimichurri.
[0:48:58 – 0:48:59] Erik: Nice.
[0:48:59 – 0:49:02] Erik: And we’re on Jordan, looking down the narrows.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:03] Erik: Need some boost.
[0:49:03 – 0:49:07] Erik: Haven’t spied any pictos yet, but we’ve been told they’re there.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:11] Erik: And if you believe they’re there, then they’re there.
[0:49:11 – 0:49:11] Erik: They’ll be there.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:14] Erik: Snap into a Sogo.
[0:49:17 – 0:49:19] Adam: That’s some feistiness.
[0:49:19 – 0:49:20] Adam: Yeah, chimichurri.
[0:49:20 – 0:49:20] Adam: Got some feisty.
[0:49:24 – 0:49:25] Erik: Just got off of IMA.
[0:49:26 – 0:49:26] Erik: IMA?
[0:49:26 – 0:49:27] SPEAKER_00: IMA.
[0:49:27 – 0:49:32] Erik: Saw some ZRE, Zeveril Racing Panels in the wild.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:34] Erik: Yeah, somebody else has one.
[0:49:34 – 0:49:36] Adam: They have the original stickers on them and everything.
[0:49:36 – 0:49:38] Erik: They look like they’re in mint condition.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:39] Erik: They did look like they were very nice.
[0:49:40 – 0:49:43] Erik: I don’t think they make those anymore, so hang on to those, boys, if you’re out there listening.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:49] Adam: We had multiple people shout out Gordy, finally.
[0:49:49 – 0:49:51] Erik: We finally did get some duck comments.
[0:49:52 – 0:49:58] Erik: He has been good today, so we haven’t had to call him by his Christian name, Gordon F. Bombay.
[0:49:58 – 0:50:02] Erik: Yeah, we’re talking about you, Gordy.
[0:50:04 – 0:50:05] SPEAKER_00: Oh, boy.
[0:50:05 – 0:50:06] SPEAKER_00: What an adventure.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:10] SPEAKER_00: Can’t wait until I get a hat, though.
[0:50:11 – 0:50:12] SPEAKER_00: It’s hot out here.
[0:50:12 – 0:50:13] SPEAKER_00: The sun’s beating down.
[0:50:13 – 0:50:14] SPEAKER_00: We’re a little duck head.
[0:50:14 – 0:50:16] SPEAKER_00: It’s getting quite roasted.
[0:50:17 – 0:50:20] Erik: Just wait until we jam some easy cheese in that brain of yours, Gordy.
[0:50:20 – 0:50:21] SPEAKER_00: What?
[0:50:22 – 0:50:23] Adam: Nothing.
[0:50:23 – 0:50:25] Erik: I meant a hat just coming your way.
[0:50:25 – 0:50:25] Adam: I’m joking.
[0:50:25 – 0:50:26] Adam: We’re getting you a hat.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:30] Erik: What do you give these beefsteaks?
[0:50:30 – 0:50:31] Erik: This one’s spicy.
[0:50:31 – 0:50:32] Erik: I kind of like it.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:33] Adam: What was yours?
[0:50:33 – 0:50:34] Erik: Tex-Mex.
[0:50:34 – 0:50:36] Adam: Oh, I thought my chimichurri was going to be spicy, but…
[0:50:37 – 0:50:39] Adam: It was a good medium spicy.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:43] Adam: I’m going to give it a six out of five.
[0:50:43 – 0:50:47] Erik: I’m satisfied.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:52] Erik: The Fisher map does mark the portage from Ima into Jordan as having falls present.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:54] Adam: No, the McKenzie has falls.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:55] Adam: McKenzie, sorry.
[0:50:55 – 0:50:58] Adam: So we were like, oh, we’ll sit here by the waterfall and have lunch.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:01] Adam: Maybe it was overstating it a bit.
[0:51:01 – 0:51:03] Adam: There are some rapids, but…
[0:51:04 – 0:51:07] Adam: Looks like we’re all going with the flow the rest of the day here too.
[0:51:08 – 0:51:09] Adam: Got like four more portages.
[0:51:10 – 0:51:12] Adam: Moving water on all of them, I think.
[0:51:12 – 0:51:14] Adam: All the way down to Ensign.
[0:51:15 – 0:51:19] Adam: Just the guys with the Zavarals also said they were banging walleyes.
[0:51:19 – 0:51:20] Erik: That was the report.
[0:51:20 – 0:51:24] Adam: Give us a little hope for tonight that we’re going to still get that fish dinner.
[0:51:24 – 0:51:29] Erik: I just want to catch one so we can bust out the Wilderness Effects fillet knife.
[0:51:29 – 0:51:30] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:51:30 – 0:51:34] Adam: I’m going to take this moment too to give a shout out to Paige.
[0:51:34 – 0:51:38] Adam: For my Giotto kitchen knife I got from him last year.
[0:51:39 – 0:51:41] Adam: Thing’s a real boss in the kitchen.
[0:51:41 – 0:51:45] Adam: When I first got it, it was like, it’s too nice to use.
[0:51:45 – 0:51:48] Adam: But you can’t think like that when you buy the finer things in life.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:51] Adam: You just got to get them a little dirty sometimes.
[0:51:51 – 0:51:54] Adam: Natalie got like a literal machete.
[0:51:55 – 0:52:00] Adam: I can’t remember the actual name of that one, but it’s like literally the size of her arm.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:05] Adam: She carries that hiking because there’s like a weird van driving up and down the road one day.
[0:52:06 – 0:52:07] Adam: Can’t really be too careful out there.
[0:52:08 – 0:52:15] Erik: Didn’t the, uh, the Gyoto kitchen knife come with a, like, special uh, terrycloth for drying it?
[0:52:15 – 0:52:15] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:16 – 0:52:19] Adam: It’s made out of a special suede only found on Burntside Lake.
[0:52:19 – 0:52:24] Adam: I thought it was, uh… Oh, no, it’s actually harvested right from the moose’s antler.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:24] Erik: Ah, yes.
[0:52:25 – 0:52:26] Adam: That’s what you use to clean that blade.
[0:52:26 – 0:52:29] Erik: Harvested in the spring, of course, from the north side of Burntside.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:30] Erik: Right, right.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:32] Erik: It’s the only place you get your Gyoto shams.
[0:52:32 – 0:52:33] Adam: Dude makes a fine blade.
[0:52:33 – 0:52:34] Adam: Well, he makes the…
[0:52:34 – 0:52:36] Adam: He puts them all together, actually.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:37] Adam: There’s another guy that’s making the blades.
[0:52:38 – 0:52:38] Adam: He’s
[0:52:39 – 0:53:02] Adam: talk about smithing well this guy you can smith talk about smithing he’s got the smithy and then he gets the blades from the smithy and he artfully puts them all together and uh boy oh boy there’s something else man these meat sticks hit the spot i think i’m gonna have some more you’ve never you’ve never seen a tang so fine nailed it i know my knife parts
[0:53:26 – 0:53:53] Erik: welcome to another installment of eric’s elocutions it’s just me under the canoe i shouldn’t say that it’s just me it’s me and gordon f bombay up in the nose ghost is on my back we’re gonna see how long 105 rod portage takes
[0:53:56 – 0:54:02] Erik: Just got off of Gibson, heading north towards Ashigan.
[0:54:07 – 0:54:09] Erik: Seen a few people over here.
[0:54:09 – 0:54:19] Erik: We were on Jordan and we went by seven canoes in a row, 16 people.
[0:54:21 – 0:54:26] Erik: And I don’t think we’ve gone across the portage without interacting with others.
[0:54:28 – 0:54:30] Erik: So there’s some folks out here.
[0:54:30 – 0:54:33] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:54:35 – 0:54:42] Erik: I feel like sometimes that bothers me, but I mean, it’s to be expected.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:44] Erik: We’re closing in on Ensign.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:48] Erik: I can hear him setting up the circus tents right now.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:50] Erik: Yep.
[0:54:51 – 0:54:53] Erik: That’s distant calliope music.
[0:54:56 – 0:55:00] Erik: So, you know, it was to be expected.
[0:55:00 – 0:55:13] Erik: It’d be a different story if we were out here in the middle of October, 10 portages in, and I saw a train of 16 people and a dog and a canoe go by.
[0:55:13 – 0:55:18] Erik: I might be like, well, this is highly unexpected, but…
[0:55:20 – 0:55:21] Erik: We know what we’re getting ourselves into.
[0:55:21 – 0:55:28] Erik: These west side portages though, I tell ya.
[0:55:28 – 0:55:32] Erik: This thing’s a garden walk.
[0:55:32 – 0:55:33] Erik: The landings?
[0:55:35 – 0:55:35] Erik: My lord.
[0:55:35 – 0:55:38] Erik: They are, they’re spoiling us.
[0:55:39 – 0:55:43] Erik: Like, you don’t even have to think about them.
[0:55:45 – 0:55:48] Erik: There was a little stretch just out of Thomas to the north that, looking on the map,
[0:55:49 – 0:55:53] Erik: It was like rapid fire river portages where you just see that and you’re like, oh gosh.
[0:55:53 – 0:55:58] Erik: We’re going to be clambering in and out of the canoe in a sludge pit.
[0:55:59 – 0:56:05] Erik: But between Thomas and Hatcha, that river was actually like kind of a dream to get in and out of.
[0:56:05 – 0:56:12] Erik: Super gravelly bottom with very clear water on a very hot day.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:14] Erik: It felt great to get out in that.
[0:56:16 – 0:56:18] Erik: It’s probably got to be close to 80 at this point.
[0:56:19 – 0:56:47] Erik: light winds one more portage to ensign and then we’ll see how many screen houses we’re gonna run into we’re gonna try to go down to the west end take our chances down there toyed with the idea of just going for the one campsite on splash being set up for a real real early morning pickup
[0:56:49 – 0:56:49] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:56:51 – 0:56:52] Erik: It’ll be interesting to see what’s going on out here.
[0:56:56 – 0:56:57] Erik: Feeling good though mostly.
[0:56:57 – 0:57:01] Erik: I think a lot has to do with these portage landings.
[0:57:02 – 0:57:16] Erik: You’re not like struggling to find a good rock to stand on while there’s like a 15 foot drop off on your right and it’s just like a tiny little notch.
[0:57:17 – 0:57:21] Erik: Where you have to, like, walk to the front of the canoe from the back.
[0:57:23 – 0:57:25] Erik: Oh, boardwalk empire coming up here.
[0:57:25 – 0:57:27] Erik: This is three boards wide.
[0:57:27 – 0:57:29] Erik: Nice.
[0:57:42 – 0:57:47] Erik: We did, in fact, locate the pictographs on Jordan, but…
[0:57:48 – 0:57:50] Erik: We’ll talk about those when we get back together.
[0:57:50 – 0:58:09] Erik: Just figured I’d take this moment of solitude to basically use this microphone and the audience to keep my mind off of this portage, which isn’t really that bad.
[0:58:09 – 0:58:11] Erik: It’s just kind of…
[0:58:13 – 0:58:20] Erik: weight of this gel coat min 2’s at least 10 pounds heavier than a than a freshie.
[0:58:23 – 0:58:34] Erik: and we’ve seen some fresh canoes and it is disheartening to see the way that they’re getting dragged on the rocks.
[0:58:36 – 0:58:40] Erik: just had a fresh shipment of Winona min 2’s at Clearwater.
[0:58:43 – 0:58:46] Erik: Can’t imagine what they’re going through at this point.
[0:58:48 – 0:58:50] Erik: Godspeed, brave souls.
[0:59:03 – 0:59:05] Erik: It’s a little dry out here.
[0:59:05 – 0:59:07] Erik: Remember the last time I’ve seen mud?
[0:59:07 – 0:59:11] Erik: It’s supposed to be 100 degrees by this weekend.
[0:59:13 – 0:59:14] SPEAKER_00: It’d be nice to get some more rain.
[0:59:15 – 0:59:16] Erik: Tell you that much.
[0:59:16 – 0:59:28] Erik: This is the last long portage of the trip.
[0:59:29 – 0:59:36] Erik: Only three more portages to the pickup from Hall & Oates Outfitters.
[0:59:42 – 0:59:44] Erik: I’m not ready to be done, I’ll tell you that.
[0:59:46 – 0:59:49] Erik: Can’t go any longer.
[0:59:50 – 0:59:53] Erik: I am needed, as is Adam.
[1:00:14 – 1:00:21] Erik: Classic 2 p.m. beaver flyover heading east.
[1:00:22 – 1:00:24] Erik: Not even commenting on it anymore.
[1:00:24 – 1:00:27] Erik: It’s just to be expected that you’re going to get flown over.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:32] Erik: So we don’t even waste our breath anymore.
[1:00:32 – 1:00:35] SPEAKER_00: But just in case you were wondering, it did happen.
[1:00:36 – 1:00:37] Erik: Watch it, Gordy.
[1:00:40 – 1:00:40] Erik: He’s all right.
[1:00:43 – 1:00:44] Erik: Oh, there’s the lake.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:51] Erik: Oh, what do you know?
[1:00:53 – 1:00:56] Erik: Another picture perfect landing.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:02] Erik: Took us eight minutes to portage that bad boy.
[1:01:02 – 1:01:06] Adam: Oh, wow.
[1:01:06 – 1:01:07] Adam: Elocutions.
[1:01:07 – 1:01:09] Erik: Elocutions.
[1:01:10 – 1:01:11] Erik: Over and out.
[1:01:11 – 1:01:12] Erik: This is a sweet looking lake.
