Episode Transcript
[0:00:01 – 0:00:22] Derek from STL: Hey, Eric with a K, Adam with two A’s, one D and one M. It’s Derek from STL, St. Louis, keeping the hotline hot or nice and muggy as it is down here, keeping the nut line nutty as the case may be.
[0:00:23 – 0:00:30] Derek from STL: I wish I was calling with a trip report, but our permit isn’t for about three weeks, so I’ll have to call back with that.
[0:00:31 – 0:00:40] Derek from STL: No, I wanted to call and ask if you guys, you know that sick kind of sinking feeling in your stomach when something bad is about to happen?
[0:00:41 – 0:00:44] Derek from STL: Have you ever had that happen when listening to your favorite podcast?
[0:00:46 – 0:01:00] Derek from STL: Yeah, that was me last Sunday when I fired up 199, the Dead Toe Club, and you started talking about some dusty old tall boys that have been kicking around the vibe since the video store.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:16] Derek from STL: At first, I was super excited, thinking this was going to be that magical episode when you finally got a round of the beers we dropped off at the old video store last Memorial Day 2021.
[0:01:17 – 0:01:25] Derek from STL: But then, as I listened a little more, that feeling of dread kicked in when the misspelling of Eric’s name was mentioned.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:30] Derek from STL: Oh man, somehow I knew immediately it just had to be me.
[0:01:31 – 0:01:36] Derek from STL: And sure enough, I felt like a total doofus, a Bobby, a Rex.
[0:01:38 – 0:01:47] Derek from STL: And as you described that urban chestnut can and how we butchered Eric’s name on the box.
[0:01:47 – 0:01:50] Derek from STL: Yeah, that was us.
[0:01:50 – 0:01:55] Derek from STL: So I’m somebody who gets my name misspelled a lot to making me feel doubly stupid.
[0:01:57 – 0:01:59] Derek from STL: Anyway, glad you guys enjoyed those beers.
[0:01:59 – 0:02:02] Derek from STL: Glad they weren’t totally skunked.
[0:02:02 – 0:02:08] Derek from STL: Wasn’t sure if Connor back at the video store stole them or what, so glad you guys have had a good supply.
[0:02:10 – 0:02:11] Derek from STL: This season’s been on a roll.
[0:02:12 – 0:02:17] Derek from STL: I’ve enjoyed the episodes, and thanks for not giving us too hard a time about that.
[0:02:18 – 0:02:24] Derek from STL: We’ll try to get some fresh art supplies and proper spellings up your way during that upcoming trip.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:29] Derek from STL: So until next time, guys, cheers and prost.
[0:02:59 – 0:03:10] Adam: Welcome to Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast coming to you live from the Tumble Shed.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:14] Adam: My name is Adam, joined here by my best man, Eric.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:15] Adam: Hello, Eric, with a…
[0:03:16 – 0:03:33] Erik: q u e eric that’s right eric and then a dame some think it’s c k or ck but in fact it is q u e people get it right it’s been that way it’s always been this way
[0:03:34 – 0:03:42] Adam: This is episode 201 of Tumble Home and never felt better.
[0:03:43 – 0:03:44] Adam: Never felt better here.
[0:03:44 – 0:03:46] Adam: It’s the middle of summer.
[0:03:46 – 0:03:48] Adam: It’s quite hot here in the shed today.
[0:03:48 – 0:03:49] Adam: Today!
[0:03:49 – 0:03:51] Adam: And it is Tumble Home in the daylight.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:52] Adam: The bright burning daylight.
[0:03:53 – 0:03:56] Adam: Remember this time last year, we were in the real haze.
[0:03:56 – 0:03:58] Adam: It’s been the opposite kind of summer.
[0:03:58 – 0:04:02] Adam: Been misting on and off all day, and the bugs have never been stronger.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:05] Adam: It’s a humid one out there.
[0:04:06 – 0:04:14] Erik: I’ve got a sneaking suspicion, and I’ve mentioned this in the past before, but I feel like
[0:04:15 – 0:04:21] Erik: This last year went by faster than any other, and I don’t think they’re going to slow down.
[0:04:22 – 0:04:25] Adam: Yeah, it’s like that Willy Wonka river ride.
[0:04:25 – 0:04:27] Erik: Is it raining?
[0:04:28 – 0:04:29] Erik: Is it snowing?
[0:04:31 – 0:04:37] Adam: I don’t know what is happening faster and faster.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:40] Adam: Don’t drink the river water.
[0:04:41 – 0:04:42] Erik: Yeah, was that chocolate?
[0:04:42 – 0:04:44] Adam: I think it was milk chocolate.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:46] Erik: Just the blood of Oompa Loompas?
[0:04:47 – 0:04:51] Adam: Today is Ronald Schera Outdoor Calendar Fact of the Day.
[0:04:51 – 0:04:53] Adam: For July 20th, 2022, parallel universes are colliding.
[0:04:57 – 0:04:59] Adam: Sunset is at 8.52 p.m.
[0:05:02 – 0:05:04] Adam: Even the Ronald Sherrick calendar is getting weird in the heat of the summer.
[0:05:04 – 0:05:06] Adam: Thank God.
[0:05:07 – 0:05:07] Adam: Yes.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:12] Adam: I saw you want to hear a fun tourist story.
[0:05:12 – 0:05:13] Adam: Now we’re in the heat of the summer.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:17] Adam: So at the co-op, I’m not even waiting for an answer.
[0:05:17 – 0:05:18] Adam: He doesn’t want to hear the story.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:19] Adam: What if I said no?
[0:05:20 – 0:05:21] Adam: Well, maybe the listeners want to hear it.
[0:05:21 – 0:05:22] Adam: Anyone out there?
[0:05:22 – 0:05:23] Adam: Are you listening?
[0:05:23 – 0:05:24] Adam: Do you want to hear this crazy story?
[0:05:25 – 0:05:29] Adam: So we have like a water tank out beyond the registers.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:30] Adam: There’s like a microwave.
[0:05:31 – 0:05:32] Adam: There’s like a water vessel.
[0:05:33 – 0:05:38] Adam: And then like a whole tray of little small cups for people to get a sip of water.
[0:05:38 – 0:05:40] Adam: And then, oh, by the seating area.
[0:05:40 – 0:05:49] Adam: So, you know, buy yourself a delicious item from the co-op grab-and-go deli case and have yourself a beautiful glass of water to wash it down.
[0:05:50 – 0:05:54] Adam: And there’s some silverware, a couple of varieties of hot sauce.
[0:05:56 – 0:06:04] Adam: And so it’s clearly drinking water in a like clear tank next to a whole tray of, I’m going to say 500 Dixie cups.
[0:06:05 – 0:06:07] Adam: Like a Culligan style, like office water cooler.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:19] Adam: It’s more of a square, you know, but it’s clearly like a big square, clear plastic water container with like five ounce, you know, sipping cups next to it on a tray.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:23] Adam: And then one of the people that works up front end, I don’t want to incriminate her.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:25] Adam: I don’t want to throw anyone under the bus and,
[0:06:26 – 0:06:28] Adam: This person is clearly crazy.
[0:06:28 – 0:06:32] Adam: If they ever get wind of this, there could be retaliation, I could see, for me telling the tale.
[0:06:33 – 0:06:36] Adam: They should be in prison, this person.
[0:06:36 – 0:06:36] Erik: Sure.
[0:06:37 – 0:06:42] Adam: But a lady wearing a t-shirt that said, God is alive.
[0:06:44 – 0:06:49] Adam: God is alive, which, you know, what were we talking about last week?
[0:06:49 – 0:06:54] Adam: I can’t believe people believe that the fossil record is fabricated by Satan or whatever.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:55] Adam: This is that kind of person, I’m guessing.
[0:06:55 – 0:06:56] Derek from STL: Sure, yeah.
[0:06:56 – 0:06:56] Adam: God lives.
[0:06:57 – 0:06:58] Adam: Anyways, it was something like that.
[0:06:58 – 0:06:59] Adam: I didn’t see the T-shirt.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:12] Adam: Jesus lives, and he looks over, and there’s nothing to catch the water other than a little tiny tray that maybe holds half a glass of water if somebody accidentally spills.
[0:07:13 – 0:07:14] Adam: She’s just got the faucet.
[0:07:14 – 0:07:16] Adam: You can just click those all the way down, and it’ll hold.
[0:07:17 – 0:07:19] Adam: She just has it on and is in there.
[0:07:21 – 0:07:25] Adam: Washing her hands in the drinking water and just running all over the table.
[0:07:25 – 0:07:26] Adam: Oh, my.
[0:07:26 – 0:07:27] Adam: And then this is the best part.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:31] Adam: He’s watching this whole thing and she’s got her back to him.
[0:07:31 – 0:07:37] Adam: And she just takes her hands all wet and just flicks them all over the drinking cups.
[0:07:37 – 0:07:39] Adam: So we had to throw away all these drinking cups.
[0:07:40 – 0:07:40] Adam: I mean, recycle.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:43] Adam: I think they’re recycled.
[0:07:43 – 0:07:44] Adam: Yeah, they’re wax-covered.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:46] Adam: Yeah, they’re wax-covered.
[0:07:46 – 0:07:49] Adam: I think they’re going straight in the landfill, thanks to the Jesus Lives lady.
[0:07:49 – 0:07:50] Erik: Always easily recycled.
[0:07:50 – 0:07:54] Adam: And then she just sheepishly looks back, I guess, and locks eyes with the cashier, and she’s like…
[0:07:56 – 0:08:00] Adam: And he just goes, you know, we have restrooms right there.
[0:08:00 – 0:08:02] Adam: Like, they’re literally right there.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:02] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:05] Adam: And she goes, oh.
[0:08:05 – 0:08:06] Adam: I thought this was a hand washing station.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:08] Adam: And it just shuffles out.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:10] Erik: Those are so common in grocery stores.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:15] Adam: Yeah, we always put hand washing stations right next to a 500 stack of small Dixie cups.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:16] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:17] Adam: And a microwave.
[0:08:17 – 0:08:19] Erik: Ice cold water and no soap.
[0:08:20 – 0:08:24] Erik: That’s usually where you wash your hands at a grocery store of any kind.
[0:08:24 – 0:08:25] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:08:25 – 0:08:27] Adam: This is a twofer.
[0:08:27 – 0:08:30] Adam: I got a second crazy story from tourist town today.
[0:08:31 – 0:08:37] Adam: Old guy in the deli case, like one of them guys who has to touch every single container.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:38] Erik: Lift it up, feel the weight.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:40] Erik: Here’s a hint there, Bozo.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:42] Adam: Every single one of these was made today.
[0:08:42 – 0:08:44] Adam: Nothing in here has lasted more than a day.
[0:08:45 – 0:08:47] Adam: We haven’t expired something in 14 years.
[0:08:47 – 0:08:48] Erik: I gotta get the freshest.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:48] Adam: It was made today.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:52] Erik: You don’t have to look at every, don’t touch every single goddamn package.
[0:08:52 – 0:08:53] Erik: You troglodyte.
[0:08:54 – 0:08:58] Adam: This old guy is just sitting in there like trying to sniff the tuna salad through the container.
[0:08:58 – 0:09:03] Adam: I mean, to be fair, I’ve seen old guys like actually open up the packaging, which has like a seal.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:04] Adam: You can’t reseal it.
[0:09:05 – 0:09:06] Adam: Just sniff the tuna salad.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:08] Adam: Get fucked.
[0:09:09 – 0:09:10] Adam: It’s fresh, baby.
[0:09:10 – 0:09:12] Adam: We use the finest possible tuna.
[0:09:12 – 0:09:13] Adam: This is a co-op.
[0:09:14 – 0:09:16] Adam: This isn’t a gas station tuna salad, you idiot.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:19] Erik: It’s in a cooler, and it says that it was made today.
[0:09:20 – 0:09:21] Adam: He just grabs one.
[0:09:21 – 0:09:24] Adam: He’s looking at them all, and finally he kicks the door open to the deli, which is great.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:26] Erik: I love it when people just do that.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:27] Erik: I’m sure you love it.
[0:09:27 – 0:09:29] Adam: What kind of psychopath do you have to be to do that?
[0:09:30 – 0:09:35] Erik: Kicks the door open, and he goes, will you make me some tuna salad without onion?
[0:09:35 – 0:09:36] Erik: Oh, God.
[0:09:37 – 0:09:40] Adam: I literally had to be restrained by my staff.
[0:09:40 – 0:09:41] Adam: I’m strangling this old man.
[0:09:41 – 0:09:42] Erik: Hold me.
[0:09:44 – 0:09:49] Erik: They had to break the glass on the tranquilizer and dart gun.
[0:09:49 – 0:09:51] Adam: I don’t like scallions.
[0:09:51 – 0:09:54] Adam: How about you go eat a bunch of broken glass?
[0:09:54 – 0:09:56] Erik: Why don’t you make your own tuna salad then?
[0:09:56 – 0:09:57] Adam: Or that.
[0:09:57 – 0:09:57] Adam: Make your own.
[0:09:58 – 0:09:58] Adam: My God.
[0:09:58 – 0:10:00] Adam: This is what’s available.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:04] Adam: You can go to one of the ten restaurants that are open in town and ask for your tuna salad without onion.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:05] Adam: Hell, they’ll make you whatever you want.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:06] Adam: To order.
[0:10:06 – 0:10:07] Adam: That’s how restaurants work.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:31] Adam: yeah this is how a deli works this is a grab and go deli do you have any molasses cookies how about you fucking go to hell where’s the loon bleeps eric i don’t know what happened with our loon button as we said last episode the loon button fell right off and that we looked and there’s no replacing that button well we’re in the upside down now so who’s to say what uh
[0:10:33 – 0:10:35] Erik: What disturbances may occur.
[0:10:37 – 0:10:40] Adam: But we should address the… At least we have ranch dressing available.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:43] Erik: Well, at least you do have the ranch dressing.
[0:10:45 – 0:10:49] Erik: The ranch dressing love of this country…
[0:10:49 – 0:10:51] Erik: It’s going to be our downfall, probably.
[0:10:51 – 0:10:52] Erik: …is disturbing to me.
[0:10:53 – 0:10:58] Erik: You know, everything doesn’t need to be dipped in ranch…
[0:10:58 – 0:10:59] Adam: It could be, though.
[0:11:00 – 0:11:01] Adam: But it doesn’t need to be.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:03] Adam: I’ll agree with you there.
[0:11:03 – 0:11:05] Adam: I’m from eastern Wisconsin.
[0:11:05 – 0:11:06] Adam: That’s my upbringing.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:11] Adam: And I find it hard to believe there’s something that wouldn’t be improved by ranch dressing.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:15] Adam: But I feel like I probably have matured a bit.
[0:11:15 – 0:11:16] Adam: And I can understand that.
[0:11:16 – 0:11:19] Adam: Maybe not everything does need to be dipped in ranch.
[0:11:19 – 0:11:21] Adam: It probably wouldn’t make me cry at this point.
[0:11:21 – 0:11:26] Adam: But you have seen somebody physically cry due to the lack of ranch dressing this summer.
[0:11:26 – 0:11:45] Erik: Well, I’ve gotten, yeah, I’ve had many people get about as close to tears as I think humanly possible at the lack of existence of a specific kind of dressing, which is really, at the end of the day, very easily replicated with a number of other options that are available and probably are better.
[0:11:45 – 0:11:46] Erik: Probably.
[0:11:46 – 0:11:46] Erik: Probably.
[0:11:46 – 0:11:47] Erik: Probably.
[0:11:48 – 0:11:53] Erik: Well, we should say before we get too farther along that we are sponsored, in fact, still by our fine friends.
[0:11:53 – 0:11:54] Erik: Hello, friends.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:56] Erik: Hey.
[0:11:56 – 0:11:57] Erik: On Patreon.
[0:11:58 – 0:11:59] Erik: Did you enjoy that 30 minutes?
[0:12:00 – 0:12:04] Erik: That’s about as much content as we could squeeze.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:12] Erik: Just like a chamois cloth of getting the most content out of talking about almost heroes.
[0:12:13 – 0:12:20] Adam: We put the ranch seed into the press, and we really gave it five cranks to the handle to get that dressing for you out of that one.
[0:12:20 – 0:12:21] Erik: God-awful movie.
[0:12:22 – 0:12:26] Adam: It was probably one of the worst ones we’ve done here on Tumble Home Cinema Classics.
[0:12:26 – 0:12:29] Erik: Yeah, and if you want to listen to us, try and just…
[0:12:29 – 0:12:37] Erik: It was like trying to extrapolate content from the meat of the turkey that Clark Griswold cooked in Christmas Vacation.
[0:12:37 – 0:12:38] Adam: There’s nothing here.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:39] Erik: This is nothing.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:43] Erik: It’s just a hollow husk of nothingness.
[0:12:43 – 0:12:44] Adam: I’m sorry.
[0:12:44 – 0:12:44] Adam: Just steam.
[0:12:44 – 0:12:46] Adam: It’s just steam at this point.
[0:12:46 – 0:12:49] Erik: Yeah, we tried to make it fun and funny, but we’re going to try again.
[0:12:50 – 0:12:52] Erik: I think we’ll have better luck next time.
[0:12:52 – 0:12:52] Erik: Better luck.
[0:12:52 – 0:12:58] Erik: We’re doing, and I feel like it’s appropriate, maybe a few months late, but it’s still happening, and I feel like it’s still appropriate.
[0:12:58 – 0:13:01] Erik: And we’re going, we’re doing, we’re getting back in the 80s.
[0:13:01 – 0:13:05] Erik: Leah Thompson and others in Red Dawn.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:06] Adam: Wow.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:07] Adam: Yes.
[0:13:07 – 0:13:09] Adam: That’s the official selection.
[0:13:09 – 0:13:09] Adam: The pick is in.
[0:13:10 – 0:13:11] Adam: You heard it here first.
[0:13:11 – 0:13:12] Adam: That’s also on the whiteboard.
[0:13:12 – 0:13:16] Adam: We’re just really doing some work on the board this summer.
[0:13:16 – 0:13:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:13:16 – 0:13:17] Adam: Proud of you.
[0:13:17 – 0:13:18] Adam: I’m proud of us.
[0:13:18 – 0:13:20] Erik: God help us when that board is empty.
[0:13:20 – 0:13:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:13:21 – 0:13:22] Adam: Then what do we do?
[0:13:22 – 0:13:23] Adam: Well, we keep adding to it.
[0:13:23 – 0:13:24] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:13:25 – 0:13:25] Adam: We’ll see.
[0:13:25 – 0:13:28] Adam: It’s like bailing water in a leaky canoe.
[0:13:28 – 0:13:30] Adam: It’ll never end.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:30] Adam: Who knows?
[0:13:32 – 0:13:38] Erik: Let’s do the beer sponsorship and then we’ll address the voicemail that started the show.
[0:13:38 – 0:13:40] Adam: We have a… Oh, yeah.
[0:13:40 – 0:13:41] Adam: I never even got to listen to it.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:43] Adam: I have no frame of reference here whatsoever.
[0:13:43 – 0:13:46] Erik: Well, I was going to ask, but we were already… Yeah, see, I was going to…
[0:13:46 – 0:13:47] Erik: The mics were hot.
[0:13:47 – 0:14:04] Erik: I was going to try and seamlessly pause before you said that, and then make it sound like we had listened to it, but I think we will now, after the beer sponsorship, be pausing the show to re-listen for… Well, for Adam’s sake.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:06] Erik: He hasn’t actually heard it, but re-listen for me.
[0:14:08 – 0:14:16] Erik: The spelling snafu and the beer sponsorship that I was shocked to hear has actually been in our possession for over a year.
[0:14:17 – 0:14:19] Erik: Oh, okay.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:36] Erik: And if you have not seen on the subreddit a shout out to multiple orphaned sponsors, if those are yours, please use your best judgment and do not take advantage of an open opportunity to get free sponsorships
[0:14:37 – 0:14:40] Adam: Yeah, the beer donor gods will know.
[0:14:40 – 0:14:46] Erik: I feel like we’ve got wholesome and well-intended listeners who won’t take advantage.
[0:14:46 – 0:14:49] Adam: As we said last week, we’re getting more wholesome with age.
[0:14:49 – 0:14:52] Adam: Obviously, our dear listeners are as well.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:54] Adam: I can’t imagine somebody would do that.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:54] Adam: But if you are the…
[0:14:55 – 0:14:57] Adam: The proud donor of one of those.
[0:14:57 – 0:15:00] Adam: I think there’s four of them that have just we don’t have notes for them.
[0:15:02 – 0:15:08] Adam: Maybe there was notes or they got lost along the way, but we still have them and they’re in all four of these are in the cooler right now.
[0:15:08 – 0:15:11] Adam: Yeah, the cooler, the mini fridge.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:17] Adam: Yeah, but we want to know who did them, who sent them our way, and how long have we had them.
[0:15:18 – 0:15:21] Adam: And any other details you could provide about why you chose them would be hilarious.
[0:15:22 – 0:15:29] Adam: So best case scenario would be if all four of you call into the voicemail hotline in the future and explain what happened.
[0:15:30 – 0:15:33] Adam: And we’ll try our best to also explain what exactly happened.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:34] UNKNOWN: What happened?
[0:15:35 – 0:15:45] Adam: But, you know, we want to make sure you get credit, so we’re just going to keep hanging on to them, and hopefully we can, you know, have a fine reunion of sorts eventually.
[0:15:45 – 0:15:51] Adam: But we do have an envelope for tonight’s beer sponsor, and it is addressed to Eric plus Adam.
[0:15:51 – 0:15:52] Erik: Wait, how is that spelled?
[0:15:53 – 0:16:09] Erik: eric is spelled e-r-i-c it’s almost like my name is spelled correctly on the logo of this podcast well you know adam spelled the usual way ladies and gentlemen i implore you it doesn’t take much more than a simple paying attention
[0:16:10 – 0:16:11] Erik: And it doesn’t even really bother me that much.
[0:16:12 – 0:16:15] Erik: It is almost just funny that it is so easily.
[0:16:15 – 0:16:20] Erik: I mean, in any other situation, if somebody was like on the phone with you and said, hey, my name’s Eric.
[0:16:21 – 0:16:22] Erik: Can you please text me?
[0:16:23 – 0:16:27] Erik: And then you just assumed, well, I’ll just go maybe with the most common spelling.
[0:16:27 – 0:16:31] Erik: But there is a very clear example of how the name is spelled in the world at large.
[0:16:31 – 0:16:36] Adam: Yeah, there’s one old guy that I won’t shout out too hard, but he’s a regular customer of the co-op.
[0:16:37 – 0:16:38] Adam: He’s totally a reasonable fellow.
[0:16:39 – 0:16:39] Adam: Nice dude.
[0:16:40 – 0:16:42] Adam: And he’s in there almost every day.
[0:16:42 – 0:16:47] Adam: And I’ve been working there for six years and I wear a name tag in like size 13.
[0:16:47 – 0:16:50] Adam: No, it’s like size 20 font.
[0:16:50 – 0:16:51] Adam: 24 maybe.
[0:16:51 – 0:16:54] Adam: It’s a big, bold sans serif font.
[0:16:55 – 0:16:57] Adam: It says my name right on my name tag there.
[0:16:58 – 0:17:01] Adam: And every single day he comes in, he goes, how’s it going, Andy?
[0:17:01 – 0:17:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:17:01 – 0:17:23] Adam: handy nice thanks carl wait i said i wasn’t gonna call him out yeah there was a guy uh this is just this uh the upside down this one does have an envelope which some good envelope tearing audio did it with the old uh studio uh nail yeah quite aggressive there well i wanted to make sure it made a lot of envelope noises yeah they want to just daintily open it
[0:17:24 – 0:17:26] Erik: Just one quick side tangent on names.
[0:17:27 – 0:17:36] Erik: When I worked up at Clearwater, my dad obviously worked alongside me and there was a guest, longtime guest that we had almost every year.
[0:17:37 – 0:17:39] Erik: And spoiler, my dad’s name is Craig.
[0:17:39 – 0:17:42] Erik: With a K. With a K. Also.
[0:17:43 – 0:17:46] Adam: Yeah, K and a Q-U-E. Craig.
[0:17:46 – 0:17:46] Adam: Craig.
[0:17:48 – 0:17:53] Erik: And this one guy, just every year he would come up and he would just…
[0:17:54 – 0:17:55] Erik: Hi, how’s it going, Wayne?
[0:17:55 – 0:17:57] Erik: He thought his name was Wayne.
[0:17:57 – 0:17:58] Erik: Your dad?
[0:17:58 – 0:17:58] Erik: Yes.
[0:18:00 – 0:18:01] Erik: Not even close.
[0:18:02 – 0:18:06] Erik: It’s not like Greg or even like… At least Andy’s sort of close.
[0:18:06 – 0:18:07] Erik: Kind of close.
[0:18:07 – 0:18:09] Erik: And Eric with a C is one letter off.
[0:18:09 – 0:18:10] Erik: You knew what they meant.
[0:18:10 – 0:18:12] Erik: It’s not even really worth getting upset about.
[0:18:12 – 0:18:15] Erik: It’s just funny that it’s printed on the logo.
[0:18:15 – 0:18:17] Adam: More people have gotten your name wrong than have gotten it right.
[0:18:17 – 0:18:19] Adam: And it’s not even close.
[0:18:19 – 0:18:19] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:19 – 0:18:26] Erik: But I just loved for the summers working up there, I always loved just calling my dad Wayne from time to time.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:26] Erik: Hey, Wayne.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:27] Erik: What’s up, Wayne?
[0:18:27 – 0:18:33] Adam: Next time I email your father about muffaletta sandwich ingredients, I’ll definitely address the email to Wayne.
[0:18:34 – 0:18:35] Adam: Sandwich expert Wayne.
[0:18:35 – 0:18:36] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:36 – 0:18:37] Adam: I haven’t seen your dad in a while.
[0:18:38 – 0:18:39] Adam: Anyways, there’s two slips.
[0:18:40 – 0:18:40] Adam: Where is your dad at?
[0:18:40 – 0:18:41] Adam: Are they around?
[0:18:41 – 0:18:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:43] Erik: I haven’t seen him.
[0:18:43 – 0:18:44] Erik: Yeah, he’s still at Clearwater.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:45] Erik: I’m the only one that left.
[0:18:47 – 0:18:48] Adam: Oh, that’s…
[0:18:49 – 0:18:49] Adam: Okay.
[0:18:51 – 0:18:53] Adam: Well, we should have done this one last week, it looks like.
[0:18:53 – 0:18:55] Adam: There’s two slips of paper in here.
[0:18:55 – 0:18:55] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:18:57 – 0:19:01] Adam: I’m going to read them both, even though this is sort of a… Let me just look to make sure.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:04] Adam: You will agree that this should have been read last week.
[0:19:06 – 0:19:30] Adam: it’s still appropriate oh yeah this is totally from henry who introduced the show last yeah this show this one is literally a i think a transcript of his voicemail from last week yeah and uh really sorry about the lack of the loon button these days henry but you’re gonna have to you know use those earmuffs or just um we apologize for the vulgar language you want to read that one or um i think i’ve got a secondary one here from uh paul it looks like
[0:19:32 – 0:19:34] Erik: These seem like they’re kind of personal notes.
[0:19:34 – 0:19:36] Erik: Let’s just say that they’re from Henry and Paul.
[0:19:36 – 0:19:39] Adam: Henry and Paul from last week’s voicemails.
[0:19:39 – 0:19:41] Adam: Well, Henry’s voicemail at least.
[0:19:41 – 0:19:45] Erik: And everybody knows at this point the lore of the podcast would not be…
[0:19:45 – 0:19:50] Erik: I don’t think you want to do the Abraham Lincoln argument.
[0:19:50 – 0:19:52] Erik: If he wouldn’t have freed the slaves, somebody would have.
[0:19:52 – 0:20:00] Erik: But I feel like if somebody would not have donated sponsorship beers like Paul did three years ago, we would not be here today overwhelmed with
[0:20:01 – 0:20:21] Adam: orphaned beers almost to the point where we don’t even know what to do with them yeah if you had told me like four years ago you’d be like posting on the subreddit looking for the owner the donors of the orphaned beer i would have gave you quite the look i don’t know what that means but yeah we’ve had a looks like a handwritten note from both henry and paul
[0:20:22 – 0:20:26] Adam: Thank you once again for everything you’ve done for the show, both of you.
[0:20:26 – 0:20:30] Adam: And we are sitting on a 12-er of Surly Furious.
[0:20:31 – 0:20:33] Adam: Actually, I’ll be honest with you.
[0:20:34 – 0:20:34] Adam: It’s time for honesty.
[0:20:34 – 0:20:37] Adam: Episode 201, we drank a couple.
[0:20:37 – 0:20:42] Adam: All right, so we’re not on a full 12-er, but we got most of them left at least, and they are ice cold.
[0:20:43 – 0:20:45] Adam: The last one I opened kind of exploded a bit.
[0:20:45 – 0:20:45] Adam: I don’t know what’s happening.
[0:20:46 – 0:20:50] Adam: It must be something to do with that Ronald Chera outdoor calendar fact of the day.
[0:20:50 – 0:20:58] Erik: And I am now lightly ashamed for berating the spelling of my name wrong, but… Dang it anyways, Henry.
[0:20:58 – 0:20:59] Adam: Nevertheless.
[0:20:59 – 0:21:00] Adam: You know, it doesn’t really matter.
[0:21:00 – 0:21:05] Adam: I used to work for a newspaper and really spelling errors don’t really irk me as much as they used to.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:07] Adam: You know, it really irks me, though, is font usage.
[0:21:08 – 0:21:14] Adam: If somebody sends you a document or an email and it’s got multiple kinds of fonts in it, it’s like, get it together.
[0:21:14 – 0:21:16] Adam: How hard is this?
[0:21:16 – 0:21:19] Adam: Or just any sort of weird formatting issues you see.
[0:21:20 – 0:21:21] Adam: That bothers me way more than spelling.
[0:21:21 – 0:21:24] Adam: I mean, I can’t remember the last time I used a capitalized letter.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:28] Adam: It’s kind of a form of protest against the English language, I guess.
[0:21:28 – 0:21:29] Erik: Oh, yeah, this one’s really fizzing.
[0:21:29 – 0:21:30] Erik: Don’t forget.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:30] Derek from STL: Oh, dear.
[0:21:31 – 0:21:31] Derek from STL: Oh, dear.
[0:21:32 – 0:21:33] Erik: They are some foamers.
[0:21:33 – 0:21:37] Adam: At least we didn’t hold them above the laptop for the opening.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:42] Erik: It only took us 200 plus episodes to learn.
[0:21:42 – 0:21:44] Erik: Don’t open beers above laptops.
[0:21:46 – 0:21:46] Adam: Ah, yes.
[0:21:47 – 0:21:48] Adam: So, there you go.
[0:21:48 – 0:21:50] Erik: Well, there’s one other thing to open.
[0:21:50 – 0:21:52] Adam: Right, Eric noticed something.
[0:21:52 – 0:21:53] Erik: Where’s that nail?
[0:21:53 – 0:21:54] Adam: Oh, here we go.
[0:21:54 – 0:21:56] Adam: The old famous studio nail.
[0:21:57 – 0:21:58] Erik: Everybody knows the lore of the nail.
[0:21:58 – 0:22:00] Erik: Yeah, that nail’s been with us a long time.
[0:22:00 – 0:22:01] Erik: It’s got a history.
[0:22:02 – 0:22:07] Adam: My nail’s been around here a long time by the Cadence River.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:08] Erik: I’ll tell you what.
[0:22:08 – 0:22:12] Erik: These beers have clearly been… Over-labeled.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:13] Erik: Over-labeled.
[0:22:14 – 0:22:37] Adam: he’s doing it let’s see the nail what we’ve got oh yeah it worked i’m peeling it is also it does happen to be still a surly beer oh interesting so surly like multi uh repurposed some old cans and with a one of them plastic uh labels nowadays you see they’re like vacuum sealed on there yeah oh my yeah wow
[0:22:37 – 0:22:59] Erik: freedom this is sort of like uh watching a phoenix rise from the ashes i’ve never heard of this beer before from previously unreleased beer yeah maybe maybe i should have opened it yeah these are probably we should maybe save a couple of these kept it in mint condition this is uh this is uh in fact a surly furious repackaged on top of a havoc machine
[0:22:59 – 0:23:00] Erik: Havoc machine?
[0:23:00 – 0:23:02] Erik: I have not heard of that.
[0:23:02 – 0:23:03] Erik: West Coast style IPA.
[0:23:03 – 0:23:06] Erik: 7.5% clean, happy, and devastating.
[0:23:06 – 0:23:07] Adam: Devastating.
[0:23:08 – 0:23:11] Adam: You could probably trade one of those for one of those Princess Diana beanie babies.
[0:23:12 – 0:23:12] Adam: That’s how rare that is.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:14] Erik: Yes.
[0:23:14 – 0:23:15] Erik: Good comparison.
[0:23:15 – 0:23:18] Adam: Or the Kermit the Frog baby Kermit.
[0:23:19 – 0:23:22] Adam: riding a skateboard from the Happy Meal way back in the day.
[0:23:22 – 0:23:23] Erik: Wow.
[0:23:23 – 0:23:25] Adam: That was the one I could never find.
[0:23:25 – 0:23:28] Adam: That was my white whale of Happy Meal toys.
[0:23:28 – 0:23:29] Adam: It was from Baby Muppets.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:30] Adam: Anybody remember?
[0:23:31 – 0:23:32] Adam: There’s the normal Muppets.
[0:23:32 – 0:23:32] Adam: Muppet Babies.
[0:23:33 – 0:23:34] Adam: What did I say?
[0:23:34 – 0:23:35] Adam: Baby Muppets.
[0:23:36 – 0:23:36] Adam: Yeah, them.
[0:23:36 – 0:23:38] Adam: Muppet Babies.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:39] Adam: Baby Muppets.
[0:23:40 – 0:23:42] Adam: Going around, walking around.
[0:23:42 – 0:23:43] Adam: Are they walking?
[0:23:43 – 0:23:44] Erik: What are they doing?
[0:23:44 – 0:23:44] Erik: Yeah, they were.
[0:23:45 – 0:23:45] Erik: Muppet Babies.
[0:23:45 – 0:23:48] Erik: It was a fully cartooned version.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:52] Adam: Oh, we’re going to have to find the Muppet Babies theme song to end this episode now, I think.
[0:23:52 – 0:23:52] Adam: You got it.
[0:23:52 – 0:23:53] Adam: We nailed it.
[0:23:53 – 0:23:58] Adam: We’ll scribble it onto the notes with the nail, because we don’t have a pen out here in the shed tonight.
[0:23:58 – 0:24:02] Erik: Yeah, we just scrawl on pieces of OSB out here in our notes.
[0:24:03 – 0:24:09] Erik: Well, let’s listen to that voicemail so we can move on with whatever the show is today.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:11] Erik: I think we’re talking music?
[0:24:12 – 0:24:13] Erik: Yeah, it’s Album of the Summer, baby.
[0:24:14 – 0:24:15] Erik: It’s been a year.
[0:24:15 – 0:24:16] Erik: Album of the Summer 2.
[0:24:16 – 0:24:20] Erik: Since we talked about albums of the summer, we’ve got thoughts.
[0:24:21 – 0:24:23] Erik: Do you have questions?
[0:24:23 – 0:24:25] Erik: We have concerns.
[0:24:26 – 0:24:30] Adam: Believe it or not, we had a schedule in mind for the summer, but it’s completely out of whack at this point.
[0:24:31 – 0:24:34] Adam: And what we thought was happening this week is probably happening next week.
[0:24:34 – 0:24:37] Adam: And so we’re just like, what are we going to do?
[0:24:37 – 0:24:38] Adam: Album of the summer.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:39] Derek from STL: Pew, pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:24:40 – 0:24:41] Derek from STL: Everybody loves it.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:42] Derek from STL: Everybody loves it.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:43] Adam: Everybody loves it.
[0:24:43 – 0:24:44] Adam: Everybody loves it.
[0:24:45 – 0:24:54] Erik: Light shout out to Aldi1, I believe, made a light request for something along these lines.
[0:24:54 – 0:25:01] Erik: And yeah, it’s a light Boundary Waters content episode this week.
[0:25:02 – 0:25:03] Erik: And you know what that means.
[0:25:04 – 0:25:05] Erik: We’ll make up for it next week.
[0:25:05 – 0:25:06] Adam: We always do.
[0:25:06 – 0:25:07] Adam: We promise.
[0:25:08 – 0:25:08] Adam: I do.
[0:25:09 – 0:25:11] Erik: Was that the title of the episode then?
[0:25:12 – 0:25:13] Erik: It’s Eric with a K.
[0:25:16 – 0:25:23] Erik: Now that we are beyond the portal, the loon bleeps have been lost.
[0:25:24 – 0:25:31] Erik: The full hospitality frustrations may come out, as you heard.
[0:25:33 – 0:25:35] Erik: But, no, honestly, I really don’t care.
[0:25:35 – 0:25:36] Erik: It’s just, what do you do?
[0:25:37 – 0:25:43] Erik: You take one little pen and you make one extra line and it turns a C right into a K.
[0:25:44 – 0:25:48] Adam: Yeah, I mean, we knew who you were talking about.
[0:25:48 – 0:25:49] Erik: Sounds the same.
[0:25:49 – 0:25:50] Adam: The Shlipas were amazing.
[0:25:53 – 0:25:54] Adam: So, good times.
[0:25:54 – 0:25:56] Erik: Good times, everybody.
[0:25:56 – 0:25:57] Adam: We appreciate everything.
[0:25:58 – 0:25:59] Erik: We appreciate everything.
[0:26:00 – 0:26:02] Adam: So don’t beat yourself up.
[0:26:02 – 0:26:03] Adam: It’s really not that big of a deal.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:10] Adam: As I tell my staff at the co-op, as we watch the insanity of the old people in town this time of year,
[0:26:10 – 0:26:11] Adam: You know, don’t worry about it.
[0:26:11 – 0:26:12] Adam: We’re not saving lives.
[0:26:13 – 0:26:13] Adam: Right.
[0:26:13 – 0:26:17] Adam: You know, nobody here needs to take it that serious, including ourselves.
[0:26:17 – 0:26:18] Erik: Yeah, we’re not saving lives.
[0:26:18 – 0:26:20] Adam: Take a long, hard look in the map.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:21] Erik: And we’re not building bombs.
[0:26:22 – 0:26:24] Erik: We’re right down there in the middle somewhere.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:29] Erik: Although I’m sure there’s some good people that build bombs.
[0:26:29 – 0:26:30] Erik: They just don’t know.
[0:26:31 – 0:26:31] Erik: The best.
[0:26:32 – 0:26:33] Erik: That they shouldn’t be.
[0:26:35 – 0:26:36] Adam: What’s your album in the summer?
[0:26:38 – 0:26:40] Erik: I mean, at this point, I think it’s got to be Grace Ives.
[0:26:41 – 0:26:41] Erik: Wow.
[0:26:41 – 0:26:41] Erik: All right.
[0:26:42 – 0:26:43] Erik: Just straight off the bat.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:44] Erik: I mean, good night.
[0:26:44 – 0:26:45] Erik: That’s it.
[0:26:45 – 0:26:45] Erik: That’s the end.
[0:26:46 – 0:26:47] Adam: That’s the end.
[0:26:47 – 0:26:48] Erik: I mean.
[0:26:48 – 0:26:48] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:26:49 – 0:26:52] Erik: It’s been the, you know, it’s sort of one of those things where.
[0:26:54 – 0:27:18] Erik: Yeah, you asked somebody that question, and I think the best way to think about it for myself personally is regardless of where you’re going or how long the trip is, whenever I’m in the car, whatever my little scrolling finger finds itself on most frequently has been that album.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:20] Adam: Grace Ives, there you go.
[0:27:22 – 0:27:25] Adam: I was asking this to everybody I could find yesterday in town.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:26] Adam: Everybody that you could find?
[0:27:26 – 0:27:27] Adam: I’m sure that wasn’t that hard.
[0:27:27 – 0:27:29] Adam: There was a couple people in town.
[0:27:29 – 0:27:30] Erik: Just out in the streets with a microphone?
[0:27:31 – 0:27:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:31 – 0:27:33] Erik: What do they call that?
[0:27:34 – 0:27:35] Erik: Man on the street.
[0:27:35 – 0:27:37] Erik: Yeah, you’re just man on the street in it.
[0:27:37 – 0:27:39] Adam: Hey, excuse me, ma’am?
[0:27:39 – 0:27:39] Adam: Champ?
[0:27:40 – 0:27:40] Adam: Champ?
[0:27:40 – 0:27:40] Adam: What do you think?
[0:27:41 – 0:27:41] Adam: Album of the Summer?
[0:27:42 – 0:27:42] Adam: Album of the Summer?
[0:27:42 – 0:27:42] Adam: What do you think?
[0:27:43 – 0:27:43] Adam: And they’re like, what?
[0:27:44 – 0:27:45] Adam: Most of them ran.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:48] Adam: A few people briskly walked away.
[0:27:48 – 0:27:54] Adam: I got a few good answers, though, from some coworkers, some friends in town.
[0:27:55 – 0:27:57] Adam: And what are you looking for there, Eric?
[0:27:57 – 0:27:58] Adam: My phone.
[0:27:59 – 0:27:59] Adam: I don’t have it.
[0:28:00 – 0:28:00] Adam: I don’t have it.
[0:28:00 – 0:28:05] Erik: I was going to put some music on maybe in the background just to continue…
[0:28:06 – 0:28:28] Adam: yeah we might as well the spotify algorithm take that whether or not we can continue getting away with playing some of the music that we have been i think uh when you ask somebody the album of the summer for one like i it’s one of my interview questions if you ever apply anybody out there ever applied at the co-op anybody if somebody actually listens to the show applied at the co-op that’d be pretty funny
[0:28:30 – 0:28:37] Adam: But I always ask in the interview, tell me about a recipe you’ve made lately, or what’s your favorite recipe?
[0:28:37 – 0:28:38] Adam: Favorite thing to cook.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:39] Adam: Favorite thing to cook.
[0:28:39 – 0:28:44] Adam: And ultimately, even for people who actually are very talented cooks, you don’t get great answers to that question.
[0:28:45 – 0:28:47] Adam: Never been able to figure out why that is.
[0:28:49 – 0:28:53] Adam: It seems to me a pretty straightforward answer, and I feel like I would be able to give a good answer.
[0:28:53 – 0:29:21] Adam: answer to that question but i’ve never been like satisfied with that as like an interview question and i was at a conference lately uh just a few weeks ago and i heard a better version of the question which was what’s in your fridge and i feel like that’s something that’s like more easily relatable so i don’t know you know a lot of people are like does it have to be an album from this year or from this summer itself and
[0:29:21 – 0:29:44] Adam: no no and then finally the the alternate the what’s in your fridge version of that question was like well what do you put on your car after a long shift at the co-op when you’re heading home yeah what’s the first song you go to sure doesn’t matter what year it came out and then that immediately was like getting better and you know getting better answers and engagement with people like they could i don’t know for whatever reason comprehend it better like what i was trying to ask
[0:29:44 – 0:29:45] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:45 – 0:29:48] Adam: Which, basically, that’s what I was trying to ask, because I know what the answer is for me.
[0:29:48 – 0:29:51] Adam: It wasn’t even a close one.
[0:29:51 – 0:29:51] Adam: It’s goose.
[0:29:52 – 0:29:52] Erik: Goose.
[0:29:52 – 0:29:57] Adam: What am I putting on after a long 10-hour shift of making sandwiches and gravy?
[0:29:59 – 0:29:59] Adam: And…
[0:30:00 – 0:30:02] Adam: And tuna salad with scallions.
[0:30:02 – 0:30:03] Adam: It’s Goose.
[0:30:04 – 0:30:10] Adam: I know I was telling you about Goose a couple of weeks ago, and I’m sure I’m really late to the game on Goose.
[0:30:11 – 0:30:13] Adam: I’m too old to be listening to Goose.
[0:30:14 – 0:30:19] Adam: I’m not hip enough to be listening to Goose, but I guess there’s a hot new jam band out there.
[0:30:19 – 0:30:21] Adam: But to me, they’re not that much of a jam.
[0:30:21 – 0:30:21] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:30:22 – 0:30:24] Adam: I mean, their live music is very jammy.
[0:30:24 – 0:30:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:32] Adam: But their studio albums are pretty fun, like riddled with piano, like good driving piano and guitar.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:34] Adam: Riffs?
[0:30:35 – 0:30:35] Adam: Riffs?
[0:30:35 – 0:30:36] Adam: Is it riffs or licks?
[0:30:37 – 0:30:37] Adam: Both.
[0:30:38 – 0:30:38] Adam: Well, they got them both.
[0:30:39 – 0:30:41] Adam: Goose has got the riffs and the licks.
[0:30:41 – 0:30:42] Adam: Licking those riffs.
[0:30:42 – 0:30:50] Adam: They’ve got, like, drums that remind me of Tame Impala, which is high praise when it comes to drumming.
[0:30:50 – 0:30:53] Adam: You know, to be compared to Kevin Parker, that’s pretty incredible.
[0:30:53 – 0:30:55] Adam: But there’s just something about the way they…
[0:30:56 – 0:30:57] Adam: I think it’s a lot of production.
[0:30:57 – 0:31:12] Adam: Like, I don’t know if that’s truly the way their drums sound live, but I’ve been mainly listening to their newest album, Drip Field, which is also, for whatever reason, I just love the album name Drip Field.
[0:31:12 – 0:31:15] Adam: And the album artwork is hot, and…
[0:31:16 – 0:31:27] Adam: For me, it is sort of reminiscent of Butterfly 3000, which is if you rewind 78 episodes or whatever to last year’s album of the summer, 52 episodes probably, that’s how it works.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:28] Derek from STL: Yeah, maybe.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:30] Derek from STL: How high is the International Space Station?
[0:31:31 – 0:31:33] Erik: Wow, that’s a deep, deep throwback.
[0:31:34 – 0:31:34] Erik: Like it.
[0:31:34 – 0:31:35] Erik: Love it.
[0:31:35 – 0:31:37] Adam: I do know how many weeks are in a year is all I’m getting at.
[0:31:38 – 0:31:43] Adam: I don’t know how high the ISS is seven miles up, tops.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:44] Erik: Yeah.
[0:31:45 – 0:31:49] Erik: Did you get any responses from strangers at all?
[0:31:49 – 0:31:51] Adam: Or was it all colleagues?
[0:31:51 – 0:31:55] Adam: No, all those strangers I asked, they just sort of slowly backed away.
[0:31:55 – 0:31:59] Adam: I said, you forgot your tuna salad, come back!
[0:31:59 – 0:32:02] Erik: Sans green onion.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:10] Adam: Yeah, I mean, to be fair, I didn’t ask that many strangers, but… Have you listened to the Grace Ive album?
[0:32:10 – 0:32:38] Adam: I think I played it a little bit in the shed here I haven’t actually sat down and listened to it myself in full to me I like to listen to a whole album all the way through to get the full effect I find it hard to find that kind of time but I’ll put it on the list for sure ringing endorsement if Eric is picking this as the album of the summer 27 minutes of just some pure pop bliss yeah
[0:32:39 – 0:32:40] Erik: Talk about percussion, though.
[0:32:41 – 0:32:41] Erik: Right.
[0:32:41 – 0:32:43] Erik: I mean, it’s a production.
[0:32:44 – 0:32:49] Erik: I don’t think if you were to go and see her live, there would be somebody on drums.
[0:32:50 – 0:32:58] Erik: So it does take away from a little bit of that, but it needed to be put together to a certain extent.
[0:32:58 – 0:32:59] Adam: Somebody drummed these drums.
[0:32:59 – 0:32:59] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:59 – 0:33:00] Erik: Drum me.
[0:33:00 – 0:33:00] Adam: Drum me.
[0:33:03 – 0:33:05] Erik: Yeah, the album is Janky Star.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:06] Erik: It came out a couple of months ago.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:48] Erik: How did you find out about Goose?
[0:33:49 – 0:34:17] Adam: um it was like on red i don’t know honestly like on some sort of indie music subreddit the the trey anastasio and my my my really good friend father john misty apparently showed up on stage on hallucinogens with goose at one of their recent live performances wow and that made it onto the reddit i’m a part of i guess which whatever i don’t know what that says about me
[0:34:18 – 0:34:40] Adam: but I’ve never heard of them so that’s why I said before I’m like not cool enough to listen to Goose probably but if that’s how I found out about them and I was like huh interesting I just like pulled up the I just typed it into Spotify and I am a sucker for album artwork though and the album artwork for Drip and the name Drip Field and the album artwork I was like alright I’m gonna listen to this on my drive to work
[0:34:41 – 0:34:43] Adam: And I put it on, and I was like, I don’t know.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:44] Adam: It’s speaking to me right now.
[0:34:45 – 0:34:47] Adam: I’m not much of a jam band man.
[0:34:48 – 0:34:49] Erik: Yeah, I’m not usually either.
[0:34:49 – 0:34:54] Adam: I have seen Phish live at Alpine Valley once in my life, and it was an experience.
[0:34:54 – 0:35:02] Adam: But I’m not going on tour with Phish, or I couldn’t even name you another jam band off the top of my head because I’m just not part of the scene.
[0:35:02 – 0:35:04] Adam: But I don’t know.
[0:35:04 – 0:35:05] Adam: Apparently Goose is something else.
[0:35:06 – 0:35:10] Erik: Oh, what’s the other one that’s still kind of currently touring?
[0:35:10 – 0:35:10] Erik: God.
[0:35:13 – 0:35:14] Adam: Yeah, no, I was trying to think of them before.
[0:35:14 – 0:35:17] Adam: Like, what are some other like jam band examples?
[0:35:17 – 0:35:21] Adam: And I feel like, yeah, I mean, Phish is probably, those guys are probably older than I am.
[0:35:22 – 0:35:22] Erik: Oh, for sure.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:24] Adam: They’re still out there doing their thing.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:26] Adam: But I don’t know.
[0:35:26 – 0:35:29] Adam: Like I said, I’m not, that’s not something I’d usually be interested in listening to.
[0:35:29 – 0:35:33] Adam: But there’s something about Drip Field that…
[0:35:33 – 0:35:34] Erik: Widespread panic.
[0:35:34 – 0:35:35] Erik: Widespread panic, yeah.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:35] Adam: That’s the other one.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:39] Adam: Like, the only one I could think of was, like, is Umphreys McGee a jam band?
[0:35:39 – 0:35:39] Adam: Yeah.
[0:35:39 – 0:35:39] Adam: Question mark?
[0:35:39 – 0:35:40] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:41] Adam: Are they still around?
[0:35:41 – 0:35:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:42] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:35:42 – 0:35:46] Adam: I feel like a lot of, like, bluegrass bands are trying to jam like that now.
[0:35:46 – 0:35:46] Adam: Whatever.
[0:35:47 – 0:35:49] Adam: But, yeah, so I don’t know.
[0:35:49 – 0:35:50] Adam: I just, like, heard them…
[0:35:50 – 0:35:51] Adam: just heard of them.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:52] Adam: And I was like, I don’t know.
[0:35:52 – 0:35:53] Adam: That sounds interesting.
[0:35:53 – 0:35:54] Adam: I looked it up.
[0:35:54 – 0:35:56] Adam: The album artwork sounded, looked sweet.
[0:35:56 – 0:35:57] Adam: And I was like, I’ll give it a try.
[0:35:57 – 0:36:03] Adam: And I’ve been literally putting on, uh, yeah, the third track is the title track drip field.
[0:36:03 – 0:36:09] Adam: And then the fourth track is, uh, slow ready as like a really nice driving piano to it.
[0:36:09 – 0:36:10] Adam: And, um,
[0:36:10 – 0:36:14] Adam: Yeah, I can usually get, like, three of their songs in on my commute.
[0:36:15 – 0:36:17] Adam: And, yeah, really good drums.
[0:36:17 – 0:36:19] Adam: Just, like, a lot of weird, like…
[0:36:19 – 0:36:21] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:36:21 – 0:36:25] Adam: It must be post-production, like… Just, like…
[0:36:25 – 0:36:27] Adam: I don’t know what you would call that.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:30] Adam: Just sort of, like, the way they…
[0:36:31 – 0:36:38] Adam: They sort of mess with space and time with their amplifications.
[0:36:40 – 0:36:40] Adam: I’m not a music guy.
[0:36:41 – 0:36:41] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:36:41 – 0:36:42] Adam: Well, I did just…
[0:36:42 – 0:36:42] Adam: This kind of stuff.
[0:36:42 – 0:36:43] Adam: I did just…
[0:36:44 – 0:36:48] Adam: It’s like they’re playing something in reverse and then distorting it.
[0:36:49 – 0:36:50] Adam: I appreciate all that stuff.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:55] Adam: It is like an abstract painting come to life in musical form.
[0:36:57 – 0:36:57] Adam: So…
[0:36:57 – 0:36:57] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:36:57 – 0:36:59] Erik: Did you just Google jam bands?
[0:36:59 – 0:37:00] Erik: Just straight up?
[0:37:00 – 0:37:01] Erik: No, don’t do it.
[0:37:01 – 0:37:03] Erik: The top result is the Allman Brothers.
[0:37:03 – 0:37:04] Erik: What?
[0:37:05 – 0:37:07] Erik: Second top is Widespread Panic.
[0:37:07 – 0:37:07] Erik: Really?
[0:37:08 – 0:37:10] Erik: And then… What about Grateful Dead?
[0:37:10 – 0:37:11] Adam: Umphreys McGee.
[0:37:11 – 0:37:14] Adam: Okay, so I wasn’t too far off.
[0:37:14 – 0:37:15] Erik: No, and then Moe.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:16] Adam: Yeah, oh yeah, Moe.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:18] Adam: Government Mule.
[0:37:19 – 0:37:20] Erik: Goose.
[0:37:20 – 0:37:21] Erik: Goose is in there.
[0:37:21 – 0:37:22] Erik: Sixth on the list.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:24] Erik: This one is troubling.
[0:37:25 – 0:37:26] Erik: Blues Traveler.
[0:37:26 – 0:37:29] Erik: Makes me question the entire list.
[0:37:29 – 0:37:30] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know about this list.
[0:37:31 – 0:37:33] Adam: Yeah, so no Grateful Dead or Fish on that list.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:35] Erik: My Morning Jacket’s on the list.
[0:37:35 – 0:37:36] Adam: Maybe, I guess.
[0:37:36 – 0:37:37] Adam: I’ve never seen them live.
[0:37:37 – 0:37:38] Erik: Primus is on the list.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:40] Erik: Definitely not a jam band, if you ask me.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:43] Erik: Hot Tuna.
[0:37:44 – 0:37:45] Erik: The Spin Doctors?
[0:37:45 – 0:37:46] Erik: Alright, this list is bogus.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:48] Adam: This list is garbage.
[0:37:49 – 0:37:50] Adam: Um, hmm.
[0:37:57 – 0:38:01] Adam: I just saw a meme because like Trey played with him or whatever.
[0:38:01 – 0:38:03] Adam: And it was just like…
[0:38:04 – 0:38:06] Adam: The meme was like Trey playing with…
[0:38:06 – 0:38:09] Adam: I couldn’t tell you the lead guitarist’s name of Goose.
[0:38:10 – 0:38:12] Adam: I just like the name Goose too.
[0:38:12 – 0:38:12] Adam: I’m a big fan.
[0:38:12 – 0:38:16] Adam: It was like Trey playing guitar with Goose on stage.
[0:38:16 – 0:38:17] Adam: And it was just like…
[0:38:18 – 0:38:24] Adam: We only play three sets on New Year’s Eve and Halloween.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:28] Adam: And then the other guy is just saying, okay, Terry, time for bed.
[0:38:28 – 0:38:34] Adam: Shout out to Matt at work for sharing that goose meme with me.
[0:38:34 – 0:38:37] Adam: But I just like that they called Trey Terry.
[0:38:37 – 0:38:43] Adam: So I guess Trey Anastasio is no longer cool or relevant and a goose is taking their place.
[0:38:44 – 0:38:45] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:38:45 – 0:38:46] Erik: Pass me the torch.
[0:38:46 – 0:38:47] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:49] Adam: Yeah, I mean, I thought it was neat that they played together.
[0:38:49 – 0:38:51] Adam: I don’t know what Father John Misty was doing there.
[0:38:51 – 0:38:52] Adam: I think just doing drugs.
[0:38:52 – 0:38:53] Erik: Probably.
[0:38:54 – 0:38:55] Adam: And that’s what summer’s for, isn’t it?
[0:38:56 – 0:38:57] Erik: Yeah, for some.
[0:38:57 – 0:38:58] Adam: So, I don’t know.
[0:38:58 – 0:39:01] Adam: I’m not probably going to a Goose concert or anything.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:06] Adam: And this is a mildly ringing endorsement for Drip Field, the studio album.
[0:39:06 – 0:39:07] Adam: I don’t know about the live show.
[0:39:07 – 0:39:14] Adam: I’m probably… My days of going to live jam band concerts are well, well behind me at this point.
[0:39:14 – 0:39:14] Adam: Probably.
[0:39:14 – 0:39:15] Adam: Yeah.
[0:39:15 – 0:39:21] Erik: The vocals have got, for whatever reason, are striking me with a little bit of Peter Gabriel vibes, to be honest.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:24] Adam: And they got that thumping drum, too.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:25] Adam: It is very Peter Gabriel in there.
[0:39:25 – 0:39:26] Adam: It’s actually kind of…
[0:39:32 – 0:39:43] Erik: A somewhat unique idea, and this is just me off the cuff thinking out loud, it almost sounds like 80s jam band.
[0:39:44 – 0:39:46] Erik: Like 80s sounding music, but in a jam band.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:48] Adam: Like they’ve fused two…
[0:39:48 – 0:39:51] Adam: This is like Phish meets Kiri.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:53] Erik: Yeah.
[0:39:55 – 0:39:56] Erik: Who is that?
[0:39:57 – 0:39:57] Erik: Mr. Mister.
[0:39:57 – 0:39:58] Adam: Mr. Mister.
[0:39:59 – 0:40:07] Adam: Yeah, we did a road trip together out west through Death Valley and up to the tallest sequoia we could find and back.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:11] Adam: And I think we played Mr. Mister every morning when we got into the Tahoe.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:13] Erik: Yeah, it was like before coffee.
[0:40:13 – 0:40:17] Adam: Yeah, we were taking Wayne’s Tahoe on a ride across the country.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:22] Adam: Before I even have my coffee, I got to listen to Kiri by Mr. Mister.
[0:40:22 – 0:40:25] Adam: And that’s what this… Yeah, it’s like that kind of feel to it.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:28] Adam: Yeah, no, it’s… 80s.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:38] Erik: Every time you kind of get to a certain point where you think like, well, I don’t know, drums, guitars, synthesizers, and a singer, whatever.
[0:40:38 – 0:40:42] Erik: How many different ways can you mix that into an interesting sound?
[0:40:43 – 0:40:48] Adam: Now that we’ve talked them up a bunch, Goose is probably going to be the one that copyrights this family and gets us shut down.
[0:40:49 – 0:40:50] Erik: We’re talking over it.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:51] Erik: You can do whatever you want if you’re talking over it.
[0:40:52 – 0:40:52] Erik: Right?
[0:40:53 – 0:40:53] Erik: We know the rules.
[0:40:53 – 0:40:54] Adam: That’s how it works.
[0:40:55 – 0:40:56] Erik: Yeah.
[0:40:56 – 0:40:59] Erik: Do you want to continue on with any other mentions of your own?
[0:40:59 – 0:41:00] Erik: Do you want to go to others?
[0:41:00 – 0:41:03] Adam: That’s the only one I wanted to mention, really.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:12] Adam: I mean, I’ve got some other ones on my list just from asking people around town what their albums of the summer are, but this is the one truly where I’ve been putting it on a lot.
[0:41:13 – 0:41:18] Adam: I have some other ones on here that other people mentioned that I am also listening to a lot of that I’m excited to talk about.
[0:41:19 – 0:41:21] Erik: Well, I didn’t go through and poll my coworkers.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:22] Erik: I should have.
[0:41:23 – 0:41:24] Adam: Yeah, you got some really cool coworkers.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:29] Erik: You’re much better at asking people than I am about stuff like this, but…
[0:41:29 – 0:41:38] Erik: And I know you’re not as, you were not and probably are not still as into this album, but it’s probably the second on the list that has been.
[0:41:39 – 0:41:46] Erik: At the end of the year, I wouldn’t be surprised if this one was up there with the, and who knows, Grace Ives could drop off.
[0:41:47 – 0:41:53] Erik: But right now, it’s just such a nice, quick, like, just basically drive home.
[0:41:53 – 0:41:53] Erik: Yeah, remember last year?
[0:41:54 – 0:41:59] Erik: It’s like I can almost listen to the entire album just on the drive home, which I kind of appreciate.
[0:42:00 – 0:42:14] Erik: But previously, I know you have been a fan of his work, maybe not so much on this album, but I have been listening a lot to the most recent Alex Cameron album.
[0:42:15 – 0:42:17] Adam: Yeah, I just haven’t had time for that.
[0:42:18 – 0:42:18] Erik: And…
[0:42:19 – 0:42:20] Erik: Yeah, it is…
[0:42:21 – 0:42:22] Erik: I think…
[0:42:22 – 0:42:23] Adam: I want to listen to it, though.
[0:42:23 – 0:42:34] Erik: There’s something about Alex Cameron that really speaks to me when it comes to his sense of humor and just the level at which…
[0:42:35 – 0:42:44] Erik: If you were to just hear a song of his in passing and not really understand kind of his…
[0:42:44 – 0:42:46] Erik: I don’t know what the word is…
[0:42:47 – 0:42:57] Erik: like his oeuvre to know exactly like, okay, he’s not 100% sincere.
[0:42:57 – 0:42:59] Adam: It’s this weird fine line that he walks.
[0:42:59 – 0:43:01] Adam: Yeah, he’s got a dry sense of humor.
[0:43:01 – 0:43:02] Adam: I know somebody like that.
[0:43:02 – 0:43:03] Adam: I’m looking at him right now.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:04] Adam: What?
[0:43:04 – 0:43:05] Erik: Where?
[0:43:05 – 0:43:07] Adam: Yeah, it’s probably Arrow, the dog.
[0:43:07 – 0:43:07] Adam: Probably.
[0:43:07 – 0:43:09] Adam: She’s looking pretty dry.
[0:43:09 – 0:43:10] Adam: She’s looking pretty dry right now and dusty.
[0:43:10 – 0:43:11] Adam: Dry and dusty.
[0:43:11 – 0:43:12] UNKNOWN: Ha, ha, ha.
[0:43:12 – 0:43:19] Erik: but sometimes it’s right on the nose and you’re just like, okay, clearly this is like kind of like a, like a, a Randy Newman ask.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:23] Erik: Like he doesn’t really hate short people.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:43:24 – 0:43:25] Adam: I just love it.
[0:43:25 – 0:43:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:25 – 0:43:31] Adam: When you, somebody is joking and if you’ve known them a long time, you know, they’re joking, but there are other people can’t tell they’re joking.
[0:43:31 – 0:43:31] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:32 – 0:43:35] Adam: That’s my, my, one of my favorite kinds of jokes really can get to people.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:38] Adam: But I also like find a lot of humor in that.
[0:43:38 – 0:43:42] Adam: And that’s, I think in the lyricism of Cameron, like there’s a lot of those kinds of,
[0:43:43 – 0:43:59] Erik: one-offs and they’re like wait a second what do you think yeah and i don’t think in the grand scheme of like his discography this would be up there i don’t think even in my top two i don’t think he’s only had like four albums probably it’s a slow burner though that can like get to you later
[0:43:59 – 0:44:23] Adam: uh i mean yeah maybe i remember last year when we were doing this and it was like we’re talking all these albums up and then uh montero came out like in september yeah like why wasn’t this released in the middle of summer this would have been by far the album of the summer so i’m hopeful the album there might be more contenders for album in the summer later in the year this will get to our new year’s top 10 uh you know list
[0:44:23 – 0:44:27] Erik: Yeah, when we fully dive in and have a full thought out top 10 list.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:28] Erik: This is just a little bit more.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:35] Adam: This is more of this off the cuff complaining about tourists and what music we’re enjoying right now in the heat of the summer kind of episode.
[0:44:35 – 0:44:41] Adam: I would be a big fan of making this a regular on the show going forward each summer.
[0:44:41 – 0:44:42] Erik: For sure, yeah.
[0:44:42 – 0:44:59] Erik: No, but like getting back to Alex Cameron, if you haven’t listened to him before, if you just take the music at face value, it’s probably, you know, if you’re not really going to like delve in and listen to the lyrics, it probably would just come across as like your standard kind of run-of-the-mill.
[0:45:01 – 0:45:03] Erik: Like, God, those Furiouses just spray.
[0:45:03 – 0:45:04] Adam: Something happened to these things.
[0:45:04 – 0:45:05] Adam: Well, maybe they aren’t Furiouses.
[0:45:05 – 0:45:06] Adam: What was it?
[0:45:07 – 0:45:07] Erik: The Vector?
[0:45:07 – 0:45:09] Erik: Havoc Reeker or something?
[0:45:09 – 0:45:09] Erik: Havoc.
[0:45:10 – 0:45:12] Adam: Yeah, they got a little bit of havoc.
[0:45:12 – 0:45:14] Adam: These are 90% furious, 10% havoc.
[0:45:14 – 0:45:15] Erik: Nice, yeah.
[0:45:15 – 0:45:17] Erik: They just had to kind of get rid of it somehow.
[0:45:19 – 0:45:22] Adam: But it’s just like this… Kind of a lounge act, almost.
[0:45:22 – 0:45:23] Adam: Yeah.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:26] Adam: Like a perverted lounge singer.
[0:45:26 – 0:45:32] Erik: He’s singing, but it’s weird because the lyrics that he’s singing are from a perspective of somebody that is definitely not him.
[0:45:33 – 0:45:56] Erik: Him in real life isn’t actually feeling a lot of these things, but there is some light influences clearly, especially on this album, because it does have a lot to do with, obviously based on the album title, Oxy Music, a lot to do with painkiller, heroin, drugs.
[0:45:56 – 0:46:15] Erik: drug culture and I don’t think he is singing about those as like a cry for help or even as like I’m making fun of these people and that’s sort of the thing about it that doesn’t necessarily strike me like some of his previous albums have been they’ve been more just like straight fun
[0:46:15 – 0:46:32] Erik: This one is a little bit more serious at times, like oddly, and there are parts of it that, yeah, I don’t really relate to as much in terms of like the sentiment, but through and through the music is always like the actual like sonic value of the album.
[0:46:33 – 0:46:48] Erik: is on almost any album from anybody is where i gravitate towards first and we’ve talked about this before like do you listen to the music do you follow the lyrics like and for me it’s almost always like how the how the music makes me feel first and right
[0:46:49 – 0:47:01] Erik: Alex Cameron is one of those, like, rare artists that I think, like, walks this really weird line of, like, how serious are these lyrics?
[0:47:01 – 0:47:01] Erik: Because he’s not…
[0:47:02 – 0:47:04] Erik: It’s not like a…
[0:47:04 – 0:47:06] Erik: I mean, you name basically any…
[0:47:07 – 0:47:14] Erik: And most of the time they’re speaking like from their version of the truth.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:15] Erik: Their perspective.
[0:47:15 – 0:47:16] Erik: Right.
[0:47:16 – 0:47:17] Adam: Very few people write in character.
[0:47:17 – 0:47:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:18 – 0:47:20] Adam: Or sing in character, I would say.
[0:47:20 – 0:47:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:21 – 0:47:26] Erik: And there’s maybe some artists that they’re doing what he’s doing to a higher level that I maybe not…
[0:47:27 – 0:47:28] Erik: I’m not grasping.
[0:47:28 – 0:47:29] Erik: Right.
[0:47:29 – 0:47:36] Erik: But I feel like his album’s like it’s there enough for you to see and to hear to know that it’s like, well, clearly this guy isn’t…
[0:47:37 – 0:47:53] Erik: the person that he’s portraying in his songs which is kind of I think a cool concept and I’ve often really gotten it’s a weird like enjoyment on a musical level but then also just straight up entertainment and at times very funny
[0:47:55 – 0:47:55] Adam: It is funny, yeah.
[0:47:56 – 0:48:04] Erik: Not very many artists that I listen to that I get, I don’t think I’m laughing out loud when I listen to Alex Cameron, but you know what I mean?
[0:48:04 – 0:48:09] Erik: It’s entertaining in a humorous fashion, but it’s not like comedy music either.
[0:48:09 – 0:48:13] Adam: No, it’s like it gives you a form of goose bump of the mind.
[0:48:13 – 0:48:13] Adam: Yeah.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:42] Erik: kind of finding this weird little groove of like you’ve said like kind of a lounge act where he’s putting on a character but he’s singing from a perspective of like other people to a certain extent but it’s I think really at the end of the day probably not one of my favorite of his but so far this summer there’s been a couple of tracks that have been on the regular rotation for sure we’ll play Best Life here in the background yeah
[0:48:49 – 0:48:54] Erik: I think this one might also just be maybe it’s too on the nose with some of his references.
[0:48:55 – 0:48:57] Adam: This is just a little bit clarinet.
[0:48:58 – 0:49:01] Erik: Kind of like internet culture commentary.
[0:49:01 – 0:49:02] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:49:23 – 0:49:31] Adam: I do love the line, like, what even is life?
[0:49:32 – 0:49:36] Erik: Because I feel like I think about it to myself almost every other day.
[0:49:36 – 0:49:36] Erik: Yeah.
[0:50:15 – 0:50:20] Erik: Like I feel like if you were just walking through a mall and you heard that line, like I’m just out here living my best life.
[0:50:21 – 0:50:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:50:21 – 0:50:27] Erik: Like you could clearly just misconstrue that for being like a top 40 pop hit.
[0:50:27 – 0:50:30] Adam: Yeah, it could be a top 40 pop hit where they mean it.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:33] Erik: Earnestly thinking, yeah, I’m out here living my best life.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:34] Erik: But the way that…
[0:50:35 – 0:50:37] Adam: The way it’s delivered, you mean you’re not.
[0:50:37 – 0:50:39] Adam: Or you think you are, but you actually aren’t.
[0:50:39 – 0:50:43] Adam: Or you’re aware enough to know it’s not true while you say it.
[0:50:43 – 0:50:45] Erik: Yeah, he’s just talking in internet jargon.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:48] Erik: Too long, I can’t read.
[0:50:48 – 0:50:51] Erik: Even a little bit of Reddit-isms in there.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:56] Adam: Yeah, I like Tim Heidecker a lot.
[0:50:56 – 0:51:00] Adam: He has sort of the same style, I would say, when we’re talking about this.
[0:51:00 – 0:51:02] Adam: He had a new album out.
[0:51:02 – 0:51:03] Adam: I think it’s called High School.
[0:51:03 – 0:51:04] Adam: It just came out.
[0:51:05 – 0:51:07] Adam: I played one of his songs on our last radio show.
[0:51:07 – 0:51:08] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:51:08 – 0:51:08] Adam: I really enjoyed it.
[0:51:08 – 0:51:11] Adam: Was that the one with… Sirens of Titan with… Kurt Weill.
[0:51:11 – 0:51:12] Adam: Kurt Weill, yeah.
[0:51:12 – 0:51:13] Adam: That’s a great song.
[0:51:13 – 0:51:16] Adam: Yeah, I’m not going to put that on the list, but I might as well.
[0:51:16 – 0:51:16] Adam: I just did.
[0:51:16 – 0:51:17] Adam: There he is.
[0:51:17 – 0:51:20] Adam: That song especially was really a banger for me.
[0:51:20 – 0:51:21] Adam: That was one of those…
[0:51:21 – 0:51:47] Adam: you know short flames real like one week where it’s all i listen to is sirens of titan by kurt vile and tim heidecker but yeah like when i listen to this you know and just the way we’re talking about the way his lyrics go like they are very similar in their like artistic approach yeah jokey jokey on the surface but like a layer of seriousness underneath with everything they say and and play
[0:51:47 – 0:51:48] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:48 – 0:52:04] Erik: I mean, I think in general, like nuance is underappreciated and that there is a lot of that in Alex Cameron and whether or not in the longterm, his latest album ever ends up on an end of the year list or one of my albums that I listened to a lot.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:14] Erik: Him as an artist has definitely been a major part of my, especially summers for whatever reason, listening habits over the course of the last four or five years.
[0:52:14 – 0:52:17] Erik: And we’ve never really talked about him.
[0:52:17 – 0:52:22] Erik: And just in how unique of a musician he is, in my opinion.
[0:52:23 – 0:52:26] Erik: And I think that, yeah, I think we’ve said all we need to say.
[0:52:26 – 0:52:27] Erik: Good shout out on Alex Cameron.
[0:52:28 – 0:52:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:52:29 – 0:52:36] Adam: I’m guessing most people that listen to the show, especially 201 episodes in, they’re sticking with us and they can appreciate your sense of humor.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:38] Adam: Would also appreciate like…
[0:52:38 – 0:52:40] Adam: Cameron’s lyricism, for sure.
[0:52:40 – 0:52:42] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:50] Adam: I’m more of a hitch over the head with it, but you’re more of that kind of sneaky, dry humor, which is why I think we work so well together, Eric.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:51] Adam: Sneaky and dry.
[0:52:51 – 0:52:53] Adam: Eric and Adime.
[0:52:54 – 0:52:55] Adam: Adime.
[0:52:55 – 0:52:59] Adam: I’ve got to put one of those teetle days on my M or something.
[0:53:00 – 0:53:00] Adam: There you go.
[0:53:00 – 0:53:01] Adam: Teetle days.
[0:53:01 – 0:53:01] Adam: Oh, my.
[0:53:01 – 0:53:04] Adam: Is that kind of an eyeball on a dragonfly?
[0:53:04 – 0:53:04] Adam: It is.
[0:53:08 – 0:53:15] Adam: I think we can both agree that Harry Styles, Harry’s House, is probably actually the album of the summer.
[0:53:15 – 0:53:20] Erik: I would say, yeah, probably at large in the world community.
[0:53:20 – 0:53:21] Adam: It’s got to be up there.
[0:53:21 – 0:53:22] Adam: It’s so good.
[0:53:22 – 0:53:24] Erik: Maybe not tops for people, but…
[0:53:24 – 0:53:27] Adam: It’s so good, and the more I listen to it, the more I like it.
[0:53:27 – 0:53:29] Adam: So that’s always a good indicator for me.
[0:53:29 – 0:53:34] Adam: If you can’t get yourself sick of an album in a week, then you know it’s a real jam.
[0:53:36 – 0:53:42] Erik: And I never… You would have told me or asked me even… Well, maybe not to.
[0:53:42 – 0:53:49] Erik: Let’s go any time prior to three years ago that I would ever be consistently listening to a Harry Styles album.
[0:53:49 – 0:53:49] Erik: Yeah.
[0:53:49 – 0:53:51] Erik: I would have called you a crazy person.
[0:53:51 – 0:53:52] Erik: I know.
[0:53:52 – 0:53:52] Erik: But I am.
[0:53:53 – 0:53:53] Erik: And it’s good.
[0:53:54 – 0:53:55] Erik: And he’s doing his own thing.
[0:53:55 – 0:53:58] Erik: And I think it’s not groundbreaking by any means.
[0:53:58 – 0:54:00] Adam: I’d love to know what the songwriting process is.
[0:54:01 – 0:54:05] Adam: I haven’t done any research into how Harry Styles is putting out these albums.
[0:54:05 – 0:54:05] Adam: But…
[0:54:06 – 0:54:31] Erik: hit after hit after hit clearly very influenced by vampire weekend yeah uh the strokes like obviously we’re gonna like this album because he is right he’s i mean there are so many songs on this where if you played if you just snuck it into like a vampire weekend album and be like right okay yeah this makes sense it’s perfect yeah and i love it i love it’s something about like
[0:54:33 – 0:54:53] Erik: i don’t know there’s i don’t understand people that are like this who just kind of like grow out of music or just even to begin with don’t listen to music right but like you think like at a certain point you’re just like well i just kind of i don’t really listen to music anymore well i’m like i deal with it one of the best parts busy living or get busy dying
[0:54:54 – 0:55:11] Erik: Yeah, one of the most fun parts about staying in tune with current music is following that progression of waves of where we’re at, influences, and hearing other musicians in current work.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:15] Erik: And I feel like that is why I really love this album.
[0:55:16 – 0:55:18] Erik: It’s not like somebody doing a…
[0:55:20 – 0:55:23] Erik: like a Beach Boys album, which would be fine and cool.
[0:55:23 – 0:55:30] Erik: I know she and him just came out with like a cool covers album of like deep cut, like B-side Beach Boys songs.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:32] Erik: But this is something that’s…
[0:55:32 – 0:55:36] Erik: It’s so close to some of the original material.
[0:55:36 – 0:55:40] Erik: And not to say that Harry Styles on this album isn’t being original, but the…
[0:55:41 – 0:55:44] Erik: influences are so very clearly within the last decade.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:44] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:45 – 0:55:48] Erik: I think that’s really cool because a lot of times, I don’t know, I’m not a musician.
[0:55:48 – 0:55:49] Erik: I don’t play music.
[0:55:49 – 0:55:59] Erik: I listen to a lot of it, but it seems like a lot of times artists feel like they need to give like a bit of a birth in between when something comes out and when they can start being like,
[0:56:00 – 0:56:11] Erik: Okay, I’m going to maybe try to take some of those styles, some of those sounds, some of that music writing, like that musicianship.
[0:56:11 – 0:56:13] Erik: I’m going to put that into my own style.
[0:56:13 – 0:56:15] Erik: I’m not going to just completely rip it off.
[0:56:15 – 0:56:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:56:16 – 0:56:17] Erik: But I’m going to make it a little bit of my own.
[0:56:18 – 0:56:23] Erik: But I can’t just do Vampire Weekend.
[0:56:23 – 0:56:24] Erik: They’ve only been around…
[0:56:24 – 0:56:27] Erik: But Harry Styles is like, what, he’s in his early 20s?
[0:56:27 – 0:56:33] Adam: Yeah, he’s by far bigger than Vampire Weekend will ever be at this point, too.
[0:56:33 – 0:56:34] Erik: Yeah, maybe.
[0:56:34 – 0:56:41] Erik: But I’m just thinking that music that we’ve been listening to in our late 20s, early 30s,
[0:56:42 – 0:57:06] Erik: which is i mean it’s hit us and affected us in a certain way has hit him in arguably the most like profound way which is i feel like your teenage years yeah we’re like the music from that time affects you so much more greatly and to hear him yeah if i had spotify when i was a teen though i could uh i feel like i would be a whole different person honestly
[0:57:06 – 0:57:07] Erik: That’s maybe true.
[0:57:07 – 0:57:10] Erik: Yeah, it’s one of those things where, like, yeah, you bought the CD.
[0:57:11 – 0:57:11] Erik: Right.
[0:57:11 – 0:57:12] Erik: And then that’s what you had.
[0:57:12 – 0:57:12] Adam: I’m sticking with it.
[0:57:12 – 0:57:13] Adam: I don’t care.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:15] Adam: I had to pay my good paper money for this.
[0:57:15 – 0:57:15] Erik: Yeah.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:17] Adam: I’m going to listen to it.
[0:57:17 – 0:57:20] Adam: I don’t care if it’s the worst Green Day album I’ve ever heard.
[0:57:21 – 0:57:21] Erik: Oh, man.
[0:57:21 – 0:57:24] Erik: Yeah, there were so many albums back in the day that I bought.
[0:57:25 – 0:57:28] Erik: That it was like, well, that was my $20 to spend.
[0:57:29 – 0:57:31] Erik: I’ve got it, so I’m listening to it.
[0:57:31 – 0:57:31] Adam: Yeah.
[0:57:32 – 0:57:32] Adam: What do you like?
[0:57:32 – 0:57:34] Adam: Do you like as it was?
[0:57:34 – 0:57:37] Adam: I love music for a sushi restaurant.
[0:57:37 – 0:57:37] Adam: I mean…
[0:57:37 – 0:57:40] Adam: Better like opening tracks on an album of all time, I would say.
[0:57:41 – 0:57:41] Erik: Yeah.
[0:57:42 – 0:57:43] Erik: There’s something about…
[0:57:46 – 0:57:53] Erik: The first time you listen to an album, and a lot of times it’s just like, eh, whatever, I put it on, and then it was over.
[0:57:53 – 0:57:57] Erik: But I can picture, I was mowing the lawn when that song came on.
[0:57:57 – 0:58:02] Erik: I had my noise-canceling headphones on, and I was just like, wow, I was not expecting this at all.
[0:58:02 – 0:58:03] Adam: The horn section.
[0:58:04 – 0:58:15] Erik: Yeah, I mean, I love a lot of the songs on this one, but I don’t think there’s a better encapsulation for what he’s doing on this album than that song.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:17] Erik: So we should probably play that one.
[0:58:17 – 0:58:17] Adam: Yeah, throw it on.
[0:58:17 – 0:58:18] Adam: Yeah, I would say…
[0:58:19 – 0:58:30] Adam: I’m not giving Baby a vote, because Baby hates Doja Cat for some reason, but anytime you put on the Harry Styles album, Big Smile…
[0:58:31 – 0:58:38] Adam: in the worst fit of his life, and you throw this on, he loves music for a sushi restaurant.
[0:58:39 – 0:58:39] Erik: It’s good.
[0:58:39 – 0:58:40] Erik: I mean, he scats.
[0:58:40 – 0:58:41] Adam: He’s dancing somehow.
[0:58:42 – 0:58:43] Adam: It’s amazing.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:50] Erik: If you were to tell me you’re going to really like a Harry Styles song and he scats in it, I would have told, like, anytime.
[0:58:50 – 0:58:52] Erik: I’d be like, no.
[0:58:52 – 0:58:56] Adam: If you had told me three years ago that my baby was going to love the new Harry Styles album and I would agree.
[0:58:57 – 0:58:58] Adam: That’s a big sentence.
[0:58:58 – 0:59:02] Adam: I would have thought you were a demon from another universe, but here we are.
[0:59:05 – 0:59:10] Erik: Yeah, I would say this is probably the most mainstream…
[0:59:10 – 0:59:13] Erik: This has got to be the most mainstream summer album out there.
[0:59:14 – 0:59:14] Erik: Yeah, I think so.
[0:59:15 – 0:59:21] Erik: But like I said slightly at the beginning, there’s nothing about it that’s like…
[0:59:24 – 0:59:25] Erik: Blowing the doors off the music.
[0:59:25 – 0:59:27] Adam: I can’t believe Tumble Home is endorsing Harry Styles.
[0:59:28 – 0:59:29] Adam: Or is it the other way around?
[0:59:30 – 0:59:30] Adam: Yeah, maybe.
[0:59:31 – 0:59:36] Adam: Harry, if you’re out there, you can maybe throw a plug for Tumble Home.
[0:59:36 – 0:59:38] Erik: Yeah, you’re going to pull the plug on Trent Reznor?
[0:59:39 – 0:59:40] Erik: Now it’s all Harry Styles.
[0:59:40 – 0:59:43] Adam: Trent clearly is never sending the envelope full of cash, but maybe Harry Styles?
[0:59:44 – 0:59:45] Adam: Harry Styles, you want to be part of this?
[0:59:52 – 1:00:15] Erik: it’s scatting this man is scatting pulling it off yeah and he’s pulling it off can’t even be mad i’m i’m honestly impressed i mean he has got it figured out in terms of when he dropped the album the sounds of it it just seems like it’s almost textbook album of a summer right like how can you not vote for this
[1:00:16 – 1:00:18] Erik: You could put it on, and you could do anything.
[1:00:18 – 1:00:20] Erik: You could be driving.
[1:00:20 – 1:00:24] Erik: You could be painting a house, mowing the lawn, actually at a party.
[1:00:24 – 1:00:26] Erik: This is just all music.
[1:00:27 – 1:00:27] Erik: Gardening.
[1:00:27 – 1:00:31] Erik: It’s easy to listen to, but it’s not background music either.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:41] Erik: It’s just solid, not boring pop music.
[1:00:41 – 1:00:41] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:00:42 – 1:00:43] Erik: It doesn’t fade into the background.
[1:00:44 – 1:00:51] Adam: Anybody out there listening to this point in the episode who hasn’t listened to Harry’s House, just pause this episode and go listen to Harry’s House right now.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:52] Adam: I don’t care what you’re doing.
[1:00:52 – 1:00:53] Adam: It’ll fit.
[1:00:53 – 1:00:54] Adam: It’ll fit with what you’re doing.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:56] Adam: As long as it’s hot.
[1:00:57 – 1:00:59] Adam: Keeping that hotline hot.
[1:01:02 – 1:01:03] Adam: Yeah.
[1:01:03 – 1:01:03] Adam: Big fan.
[1:01:04 – 1:01:04] Adam: Big fan.
[1:01:06 – 1:01:08] Adam: Can’t recommend it enough, honestly.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:13] Adam: It’s kind of crazy, but thems is the times we’re living in, Eric.
[1:01:13 – 1:01:18] Erik: Yeah, it’s like a good Saturday at your house album.
[1:01:18 – 1:01:19] Adam: Yeah.
[1:01:19 – 1:01:20] Adam: No matter what you’re doing.
[1:01:20 – 1:01:21] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:01:23 – 1:01:26] Adam: I don’t know when this came out.
[1:01:26 – 1:01:30] Adam: What about Crush, Charlie XCX?
[1:01:31 – 1:01:31] Adam: Crash.
[1:01:32 – 1:01:32] Adam: Crash.
[1:01:33 – 1:01:33] Adam: Yes.
[1:01:34 – 1:01:35] Adam: I’m sorry, I can’t read my own notes here.
[1:01:35 – 1:01:37] Adam: It’s Crash, the deluxe version.
[1:01:37 – 1:01:42] Adam: Yeah, I think it’s her weakest album in years, but I still love it.
[1:01:42 – 1:01:44] Erik: It’s still pretty fun in the summer.
[1:01:44 – 1:01:44] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:01:45 – 1:01:46] Erik: It’s a great summer album.
[1:01:46 – 1:01:49] Erik: There are some tracks on it that are just like, yeah, they’re…
[1:01:50 – 1:01:58] Erik: Turn it up as loud as possible, roll the windows down, and watch the fireflies fly by the windows.
[1:01:58 – 1:02:00] Erik: It’s a summer album for sure.
[1:02:01 – 1:02:05] Erik: I think there’s some so-so songs on it.
[1:02:05 – 1:02:10] Erik: I’m saying this along the same lines as my comments on Alex Cameron.
[1:02:10 – 1:02:14] Erik: I don’t think it’s my preferred album of hers.
[1:02:14 – 1:02:19] Erik: I think her previous two, Where I’m At Now.
[1:02:19 – 1:02:20] Erik: Was this out this year?
[1:02:21 – 1:02:43] Adam: yeah here’s that work was like this is the easy answer here yeah other than harry’s house nice it was like it’s it’s a crash yeah we i feel bad now that i i bungled the name it’s a one you know how do you mess up the album title well it is one letter i couldn’t i couldn’t read my own notes and i did just listen to it for the first time yesterday
[1:02:44 – 1:02:47] Adam: I was a little worried when you said that because I was like, I don’t know what he’s talking about.
[1:02:47 – 1:02:49] Adam: Dave Matthews Band.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:54] Adam: I always told people, it doesn’t have to be from this summer.
[1:02:54 – 1:02:56] Adam: You can pick anything.
[1:02:56 – 1:02:58] Adam: Nobody said Dave Matthews Band, though.
[1:02:58 – 1:02:58] Adam: Thank God.
[1:02:59 – 1:02:59] Erik: Thank God.
[1:02:59 – 1:03:06] Erik: Yeah, we saw her at the Palace Theater in late April, and it was a hell of a show.
[1:03:06 – 1:03:07] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:07 – 1:03:10] Erik: If you want to go and see just a straight up,
[1:03:11 – 1:03:35] Erik: pop dance massacre of your senses on that one oh it was insane yeah she’s got incredible backup dancers she has this like slightly tilted stage oh she’s always kind of like leaning towards the crowd so it feels like she’s closer and she’s got like the album artwork looks like four or five that windshield like on the hood of your car coming for you with the sounds of the summer
[1:03:35 – 1:03:36] Erik: Yeah.
[1:03:36 – 1:03:48] Erik: No, I think, I mean, over the course of the last five to 10 years, I’ve been a huge Charlie XCX fan and especially the last three albums.
[1:03:48 – 1:03:48] Erik: Definitely.
[1:03:48 – 1:03:55] Erik: I mean, right away it was almost seemed like she was kind of one of those like plucked out of like…
[1:03:56 – 1:03:57] Erik: I don’t know, like a lab.
[1:03:57 – 1:03:59] Erik: We’re going to just make you a pop star.
[1:03:59 – 1:03:59] Adam: Yeah.
[1:04:00 – 1:04:06] Erik: And this was the last album that she needed to produce for the current contract that she had with her record label.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:06] Erik: Okay.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:11] Erik: Which is kind of a lot of where the influences and lyrics come from on this.
[1:04:12 – 1:04:14] Erik: And so she kind of had to…
[1:04:14 – 1:04:15] Erik: Freedom now.
[1:04:15 – 1:04:24] Erik: Felt like she had to just put out this kind of music and not quite as on the head as Alex Cameron is about some of his humor.
[1:04:24 – 1:04:31] Erik: You can sense a little bit of like, I’m just pushing this out into the world so now I can do my own thing because I was under contract for six records.
[1:04:31 – 1:04:38] Erik: And she got super fed up with the timing of when these record labels…
[1:04:38 – 1:04:41] Erik: I don’t remember which one she’s under, but the way that they…
[1:04:42 – 1:04:43] Erik: They just wouldn’t let her be like…
[1:04:43 – 1:05:00] Erik: I want to put out an album this year they’re like no that’s not how this works you need to go 18 months or whatever between albums she was like I’m ready to put music out and they were like nope it’s gonna be on this time frame this schedule and so gotta be the album in the summer you gotta wait till May
[1:05:00 – 1:05:01] Erik: Well, right.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:01] Erik: There’s that.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:05] Erik: But a lot of the features on this, too.
[1:05:05 – 1:05:07] Erik: I really like Christina and the Queens.
[1:05:08 – 1:05:13] Erik: Rina Sawiyama is on this, who’s a great artist as well.
[1:05:14 – 1:05:20] Erik: Unfortunately, neither of them nor Lizzo showed up at the show.
[1:05:20 – 1:05:26] Erik: That was the one, fingers crossed, because she was a feature on an album of Charlie’s two albums ago.
[1:05:27 – 1:05:31] Erik: I was thinking maybe because she was in St. Paul, Lizzo’s from the cities, she might show up.
[1:05:33 – 1:05:33] Erik: No such luck.
[1:05:34 – 1:05:42] Erik: But yeah, I mean, they are bangers for sure from front to back.
[1:05:43 – 1:05:43] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:05:43 – 1:05:47] Erik: I think in comparison to her previous two, I think I prefer those a little bit more.
[1:05:47 – 1:05:51] Adam: Roll the windows all the way down, get your hands out, and drive fast.
[1:05:51 – 1:05:52] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:52 – 1:05:53] Adam: Take chances.
[1:05:53 – 1:05:56] Erik: Do you have any off of that album that you want to listen to, or should I?
[1:05:57 – 1:05:58] Adam: No, what do you think?
[1:05:58 – 1:06:00] Adam: I don’t have notes on that.
[1:06:00 – 1:06:05] Erik: Good Ones is if you’re at home and you want to put one on, Good Ones is a great place to start.
[1:06:05 – 1:06:13] Erik: But I think there is something about the buildup and the way that lightning plays that is where I’m going to start.
[1:06:14 – 1:06:14] Erik: All right.
[1:06:21 – 1:06:31] Erik: And then we can maybe go into any of the other questionnaires responses that you have.
[1:06:31 – 1:06:33] Erik: Otherwise, I just have some honorable mentions.
[1:06:33 – 1:06:35] Adam: Yeah, I have a couple other ones I want to shout out.
[1:06:35 – 1:06:35] Adam: Okay.
[1:06:37 – 1:06:39] Music: So lifted, got me reaching for grace.
[1:06:39 – 1:06:42] Music: Body off the ground.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:44] Music: Call me by surprise.
[1:06:45 – 1:06:48] Music: Like seeing, showing stars in the sky.
[1:06:49 – 1:07:08] Music: There’s danger in the dark of your eyes But something about your breathing’s alive Got me here and now Heartbreak already hit me once They say that it won’t happen twice You struck me down like lightning
[1:07:37 – 1:07:39] Adam: Yeah, that’s the one I would have picked, I think, actually.
[1:07:39 – 1:07:45] Adam: Like I said, I just listened to it last night for the first time all the way through.
[1:07:46 – 1:07:57] Adam: Kirsten was emphatic to listen to the deluxe version, which I’m not sure how that varies from the original, but I usually go with the deluxe version if it’s available.
[1:07:57 – 1:07:57] Adam: Sure.
[1:07:58 – 1:08:20] Erik: yeah um i’m just gonna rattle off three here i don’t think i’m gonna play anything from them okay but it is worth noting there is something about these three in particular that harken back to my like late college not even college but like college age yeah that
[1:08:22 – 1:08:27] Erik: I wouldn’t think would have come out with albums of such caliber.
[1:08:28 – 1:08:35] Erik: But the new Beach House, Animal Collective, and Spoon albums are all worth a listen.
[1:08:35 – 1:08:36] Erik: I haven’t listened to a new Spoon album.
[1:08:37 – 1:08:45] Erik: And those are all artists that I remember listening to and going hard in on in my early 20s.
[1:08:45 – 1:08:47] Erik: And those were like… That was…
[1:08:47 – 1:08:48] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:48 – 1:08:50] Erik: Those were the albums that were on at the house parties.
[1:08:51 – 1:08:51] Adam: Yeah.
[1:08:51 – 1:09:06] Erik: Anybody, you remember back in the day when it would be like, it would be like a light battle over who would have access to the iPod with the aux cable to play the song that you thought nobody else had heard before?
[1:09:06 – 1:09:06] Erik: Right.
[1:09:07 – 1:09:11] Erik: And it was always, like, in those, like, yeah, Spoon.
[1:09:12 – 1:09:13] Erik: I went to a Spoon concert.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:17] Erik: Lightly disappointed because they literally just played, like, the album from front to back.
[1:09:19 – 1:09:23] Erik: Beach House didn’t think they were still capable of, like, surprising me.
[1:09:24 – 1:09:26] Erik: And especially Animal Collective.
[1:09:26 – 1:09:30] Erik: I thought they just kind of, like, struck a certain…
[1:09:31 – 1:09:44] Erik: a certain temperature of iron at the time with the music that they came out with with like sung tongs and strawberry jam or whatever that one.
[1:09:44 – 1:09:45] Erik: I can picture the album cover.
[1:09:45 – 1:09:46] Adam: Yeah, I think you’re close enough.
[1:09:46 – 1:09:47] Adam: We all know what you’re talking about.
[1:09:47 – 1:09:49] Erik: But this last one, I think they kind of…
[1:09:50 – 1:09:51] Erik: It’s not…
[1:09:52 – 1:09:53] Erik: I haven’t listened to that one either.
[1:09:53 – 1:10:07] Erik: Yeah, it’s not like a breath of fresh air, but it’s not just like rehashed animal collective music either, where it’s like, wow, this is kind of just, you guys are trying too hard, which is sort of where they got.
[1:10:07 – 1:10:10] Erik: I got a little lost with them for a while in the teens, let’s say.
[1:10:12 – 1:10:21] Erik: But yeah, the last album that they came out with, Time Skiffs, is totally worth a listen, even if you just listen to Prestor John.
[1:10:21 – 1:10:23] Erik: That song has been…
[1:10:24 – 1:10:27] Erik: There’s a few that I’ve just selected off of albums.
[1:10:27 – 1:10:29] Erik: I listen to that whole album.
[1:10:29 – 1:10:33] Erik: But that one, if I ever just need to get a song in, that’s the one I go with.
[1:10:33 – 1:10:36] Adam: Can we listen to some Japanese Breakfast?
[1:10:36 – 1:10:42] Adam: And then maybe I’ll run through some of the other honorable mentions I gathered from various folk of the town.
[1:10:42 – 1:10:43] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:44 – 1:10:45] Adam: Anything off of Jubilee would be great.
[1:10:46 – 1:10:48] Adam: This was Natalie’s pick for album of the summer.
[1:10:48 – 1:10:49] Adam: It was Japanese Breakfast.
[1:10:50 – 1:10:56] Adam: I don’t know the full story on this one, but they were going to play some venue in Minnesota.
[1:10:57 – 1:11:02] Adam: And I guess they were also going to host some MAGA Proud Boys rally or whatever.
[1:11:02 – 1:11:04] Adam: And they were like, no, no, no, we’re canceling it.
[1:11:04 – 1:11:05] Adam: And then it came out.
[1:11:05 – 1:11:08] Adam: They just delayed it and pushed it back.
[1:11:09 – 1:11:13] Adam: And Japanese Breakfast was like, nah, we’re not playing there anymore.
[1:11:13 – 1:11:14] Adam: We’re out.
[1:11:14 – 1:11:16] Adam: Do you know the story on this one?
[1:11:16 – 1:11:18] Erik: I don’t know that story, but I know that…
[1:11:18 – 1:11:19] Erik: It’s on the internet.
[1:11:20 – 1:11:49] Erik: uh japanese breakfast stand up was uh featured prominently on the end of the year yeah i know this is uh this is a very good album though and it is i love the still listen to it a lot for sure yeah i love the music video for be sweet uh coco indiana kokomo indiana was yeah i think that’s what you should go with here and uh paprika the lead off track is great but yeah let’s slide tackle i mean i could just list them all off they’re all great but let’s play kokomo indiana and we’ll sneak a uh
[1:11:50 – 1:11:50] Adam: There we go.
[1:11:50 – 1:11:52] Adam: So this was Natalie’s pick.
[1:11:53 – 1:11:53] Adam: Great album.
[1:11:54 – 1:11:55] Adam: Yeah, this is…
[1:11:56 – 1:12:03] Adam: I can’t imagine there’s somebody out here who listens to Tumble Home that doesn’t listen to Japanese Breakfast, but I’m sure there’s got to be somebody out there.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:08] Adam: So hopefully we’ve reached you here in the 58th minute of this show.
[1:12:09 – 1:12:11] Erik: Yeah, the 60… Are we close?
[1:12:12 – 1:12:12] Adam: 72nd minute.
[1:12:12 – 1:12:14] Adam: All right, we’re pretty close.
[1:12:14 – 1:12:17] Adam: I’m going to rattle off a couple other honorable mentions here.
[1:12:17 – 1:12:19] Adam: Yes.
[1:12:19 – 1:12:21] Adam: With attribution…
[1:12:24 – 1:12:26] Derek from STL: Abby Zach, are you listening?
[1:12:26 – 1:12:27] Adam: Are you out there?
[1:12:27 – 1:12:34] Adam: A couple good ones from Abby Zach, who is part of the group Ginger Bones.
[1:12:35 – 1:12:37] Adam: Didn’t pick Ginger Bones.
[1:12:37 – 1:12:38] Adam: Went with The A’s.
[1:12:39 – 1:12:40] Adam: Anybody out there listening to The A’s?
[1:12:40 – 1:12:43] Adam: Incredible yodeling on their album Fruit.
[1:12:46 – 1:12:49] Adam: That one just, like, literally dropped, I think, last week.
[1:12:49 – 1:12:50] Adam: Pretty good album.
[1:12:51 – 1:12:56] Adam: Especially if you like the vocal arrangements of a yodeling-specific group.
[1:12:56 – 1:12:57] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:12:57 – 1:12:58] Adam: Is that fair?
[1:12:58 – 1:13:03] Adam: I’m not sure if that’s a fair assessment of the A’s, but that’s a duo.
[1:13:03 – 1:13:04] Adam: Pretty good.
[1:13:05 – 1:13:05] Adam: Also…
[1:13:07 – 1:13:24] Adam: why not all capitalized why not and the album is why not um to be fair i haven’t listened to that one yet but uh was shouted out so i’m gonna give it a full shout out here on the show check it out
[1:13:27 – 1:13:31] Adam: And finally, Randy Travis.
[1:13:32 – 1:13:34] Adam: I said, which Randy Travis?
[1:13:35 – 1:13:36] Adam: The country singer, you know.
[1:13:38 – 1:13:46] Adam: And Abuzak goes, it’s the one where he’s wearing the blue jeans on the cover.
[1:13:46 – 1:13:48] Adam: I said, they didn’t really narrow it down, probably.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:52] Adam: And at the time, I even knew that wasn’t going to narrow it down.
[1:13:52 – 1:13:53] Adam: I went and looked.
[1:13:53 – 1:13:56] Adam: And it sure does not narrow it down at all.
[1:13:56 – 1:14:03] Adam: Every other Randy Travis album from the early 80s onward is featuring a lot of denim.
[1:14:04 – 1:14:10] Adam: So I’m going to go ahead and pick No Holdin’ Back from 1989 by Randy Travis as the album of the summer?
[1:14:11 – 1:14:12] Adam: If you want to get into some country…
[1:14:13 – 1:14:14] Adam: I said, what about Travis Tritt?
[1:14:15 – 1:14:17] Adam: And that was met with a hearty hell no.
[1:14:17 – 1:14:20] Adam: I don’t know what Travis Tritt did.
[1:14:20 – 1:14:23] Adam: I’m not familiar with either Randy Travis or Travis Tritt.
[1:14:23 – 1:14:24] Adam: Are you, Eric?
[1:14:24 – 1:14:24] Erik: No.
[1:14:25 – 1:14:25] Adam: I’m not either.
[1:14:25 – 1:14:27] Adam: I got nothing more to say on these.
[1:14:28 – 1:14:36] Adam: Adrian at work went with David Byrne’s American Utopia live version.
[1:14:37 – 1:14:37] Erik: Oh.
[1:14:38 – 1:14:39] Adam: Which I also haven’t gotten to yet.
[1:14:40 – 1:14:42] Adam: I’ve heard good things about that.
[1:14:42 – 1:14:42] Adam: I have too.
[1:14:42 – 1:14:43] Erik: I can’t wait.
[1:14:43 – 1:14:47] Erik: I tried to get tickets to that show in New York when we were out there.
[1:14:47 – 1:14:49] Adam: Dan and Produce went with Turnstile.
[1:14:50 – 1:14:52] Adam: Are you familiar with Turnstile?
[1:14:52 – 1:14:53] Erik: Of course I am.
[1:14:53 – 1:14:54] Erik: It was my number three album.
[1:14:54 – 1:14:55] Erik: Glow On.
[1:14:55 – 1:14:59] Adam: Yeah, Glow On from Turnstile, which I do have to put on the list.
[1:14:59 – 1:15:01] Adam: I haven’t listened to that one at all.
[1:15:01 – 1:15:02] Erik: You won’t like it.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:03] Erik: I’ve played it for you before.
[1:15:03 – 1:15:04] Erik: You don’t think so?
[1:15:04 – 1:15:06] Adam: You’ve given me the crinkled nose.
[1:15:06 – 1:15:09] Adam: I don’t know about that.
[1:15:09 – 1:15:11] Adam: Approach it with an open mind, I suppose.
[1:15:12 – 1:15:30] Adam: yeah um old sam old sam who used to work in the produce or he used to old sam who’s really young you ever does that make sense somebody that’s very young but you call him old sam um used to work way back in the day at the co-op and just happened to see him in the store the other day i said sam
[1:15:32 – 1:15:32] Adam: What are you up to?
[1:15:33 – 1:15:33] Adam: He said, he’s painting.
[1:15:34 – 1:15:35] Adam: He’s painting.
[1:15:35 – 1:15:38] Adam: I was like, have you ever considered a career as a weekend baker?
[1:15:40 – 1:15:40] Adam: This is turnstile.
[1:15:41 – 1:15:41] Adam: Yeah.
[1:15:41 – 1:15:42] Adam: Yeah, see, it’s not my cup of tea.
[1:15:43 – 1:15:45] Adam: But I could see why this would be the album of the summer.
[1:15:45 – 1:15:49] Erik: This is a good F. Like, you just got slammed in a kitchen.
[1:15:49 – 1:15:54] Adam: Yeah, this is the one where you’ve seen an old lady wash her hands in the drinking fountain.
[1:15:55 – 1:15:58] Adam: You know, you want to listen to this as you’re driving out of town, probably.
[1:15:59 – 1:16:01] Adam: Was it Randy Travis or Travis Tripp?
[1:16:01 – 1:16:02] Adam: Randy Travis.
[1:16:02 – 1:16:02] Erik: Okay.
[1:16:02 – 1:16:03] Adam: From 89?
[1:16:03 – 1:16:03] Adam: No Holdin’ Back.
[1:16:03 – 1:16:04] Adam: 1989 was the album.
[1:16:09 – 1:16:10] Adam: Yeah, I just got to hear…
[1:16:10 – 1:16:14] Adam: I mean, Randy Travis, honestly, when I went to look it up, not who I was picturing.
[1:16:14 – 1:16:15] Adam: I think I was picturing…
[1:16:16 – 1:16:18] Adam: I was in my mind thinking of Travis Tritt.
[1:16:19 – 1:16:23] Adam: But Randy Travis is far superior for old classic country.
[1:16:25 – 1:16:26] Erik: There’s the album cover.
[1:16:27 – 1:16:27] Adam: That’s the one, yeah.
[1:16:28 – 1:16:31] Adam: Definitely wearing some denim there and a nice tight tank top.
[1:16:32 – 1:16:33] Adam: Um…
[1:16:35 – 1:16:55] Adam: yeah i don’t know i have no like song titles off this one but uh randy travis some mining for coal good old randy travis what an amazing album cover yeah that doesn’t scream 80s i don’t know what i’m hoping that’s the one that abby zach was thinking of but uh
[1:16:56 – 1:16:59] Adam: Anyways, yeah.
[1:16:59 – 1:17:05] Adam: Old Sam, who’s very young, went with a rap album, I believe.
[1:17:05 – 1:17:05] Adam: Oh.
[1:17:06 – 1:17:08] Adam: Blade, with two E’s on the end.
[1:17:09 – 1:17:10] Adam: The Fool.
[1:17:10 – 1:17:17] Adam: Has there ever been a podcast that went from a Randy Travis song to a Blade song?
[1:17:18 – 1:17:19] Adam: Probably not.
[1:17:20 – 1:17:21] Adam: It ain’t legal.
[1:17:21 – 1:17:22] Adam: You’re not allowed to do that.
[1:17:24 – 1:17:33] Adam: And then right before we started recording, neighbor Yandri was shouting out Lana Del Rey.
[1:17:33 – 1:17:36] Adam: Lana.
[1:17:37 – 1:17:43] Adam: Hard Mountain Dew was the name of the song from off the old, the original Lana Del Rey, Born to Die Deluxe.
[1:17:43 – 1:17:44] Adam: Did she invent Hard Mountain Dew?
[1:17:44 – 1:17:44] Erik: Yeah.
[1:17:45 – 1:17:49] Adam: Yeah, Lorna Del Rey actually is the origin of Hard Mountain Dew, actually.
[1:17:49 – 1:17:51] Adam: So there you go.
[1:17:52 – 1:17:54] Adam: That’s the end of my shout-outs I had.
[1:17:54 – 1:17:56] Adam: Do you have anybody else on your list you have to get to?
[1:17:56 – 1:18:02] Erik: I don’t know if I necessarily have anybody that I would be disappointed about not getting off my chest.
[1:18:02 – 1:18:04] Adam: I can’t believe we’re listening to Randy Travis right now.
[1:18:04 – 1:18:05] Adam: This is incredible.
[1:18:07 – 1:18:07] Erik: All right.
[1:18:07 – 1:18:11] Erik: Well, let’s throw this Blady on quick.
[1:18:11 – 1:18:12] Erik: Blady.
[1:18:13 – 1:18:14] Erik: It’s a good time to put it on.
[1:18:14 – 1:18:18] Erik: It could very easily kill the episode.
[1:18:18 – 1:18:20] Adam: I’ve never listened to Blady.
[1:18:20 – 1:18:20] Adam: Neither have I.
[1:18:22 – 1:18:25] Erik: Maybe it’s going to be our new album of the summer, though.
[1:18:25 – 1:18:26] Adam: That’s why you ask around.
[1:18:27 – 1:18:32] Adam: I’ve found some of my favorite music this way, just randomly asking people what they’re listening to.
[1:18:34 – 1:18:37] Erik: Yeah, no, I don’t think I have any other specific albums to shout out.
[1:18:38 – 1:18:38] Adam: Well, that’s okay.
[1:18:38 – 1:18:41] Adam: It’s time to go out and play in the woods.
[1:18:42 – 1:18:44] Adam: Okay.
[1:18:45 – 1:18:46] Adam: I get the vibe.
[1:18:46 – 1:18:46] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:46 – 1:18:47] Adam: Almost immediately.
[1:18:47 – 1:18:48] Adam: I can put this on.
[1:18:48 – 1:18:50] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:50 – 1:18:51] Adam: All right.
[1:18:52 – 1:18:56] Adam: Thank you to Henry and Paul once again.
[1:18:57 – 1:18:58] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:18:58 – 1:19:02] Adam: I’m sorry I missed you when you dropped off this early at the co-op.
[1:19:03 – 1:19:07] Adam: But it made it safely here to the shed and we’ve enjoyed it thoroughly.
[1:19:08 – 1:19:14] Adam: And, you know, thanks for sticking with us despite our loon button being broken.
[1:19:14 – 1:19:14] Adam: Yes.
[1:19:15 – 1:19:15] Adam: Tragically.
[1:19:17 – 1:19:19] Adam: Thank you to everybody on Patreon.
[1:19:19 – 1:19:20] Erik: Thank you.
[1:19:20 – 1:19:23] Adam: 201 episodes and everybody that stuck with us.
[1:19:23 – 1:19:34] Adam: Everybody on the Tumble Home subreddit, it was briefly up to like 810 people and for some reason dropped weirdly down to like 801 right before we started this episode.
[1:19:34 – 1:19:39] Adam: So hope to not have too many more people just stop following the subreddit.
[1:19:39 – 1:19:39] Adam: What did we do?
[1:19:39 – 1:19:40] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:19:40 – 1:19:41] Adam: Was it something we did?
[1:19:42 – 1:19:42] Adam: Was it something we said?
[1:19:42 – 1:19:46] Adam: I hope we can win you back both your hearts and minds.
[1:19:46 – 1:19:53] Erik: Well, we’re going to go out on friends of the show that definitely don’t listen, but this is the only song I’ve heard them play for the last week.
[1:19:54 – 1:19:57] Erik: And it is On a Mountain by Danny L. Harl.
[1:19:57 – 1:19:58] Erik: DJ Danny.
[1:19:59 – 1:20:00] Adam: DJ Danny.
[1:20:00 – 1:20:02] Erik: Good night.
