[0:00:33 – 0:00:42] Adam: Oh, welcome to Tumble Home, a Border Waters podcast coming to you live from the Tumble Shed tonight. [0:00:42 – 0:00:43] Adam: My name is Adam. [0:00:43 – 0:00:44] Adam: Join me here. [0:00:44 – 0:00:46] Adam: It’s my dear friend, Eric. [0:00:46 – 0:00:46] Adam: Hello, Eric. [0:00:47 – 0:00:47] Adam: Hi there. [0:00:48 – 0:00:49] Adam: Hey, how are you doing? [0:00:50 – 0:00:51] Erik: Doing fine. [0:00:51 – 0:00:52] Adam: Your hair’s looking great tonight, Eric. [0:00:53 – 0:00:54] Erik: Oh yeah, it is. [0:00:54 – 0:00:56] Erik: It’s nice and short and cut. [0:00:56 – 0:00:56] Adam: Pretty snazzy cut. [0:00:57 – 0:01:00] Erik: Got my hairs cut and the… [0:01:02 – 0:01:10] Erik: The week, the 10 days, the sweet, sweetest 10 days of the spring are maybe behind us. [0:01:11 – 0:01:13] Adam: Yeah, we did see a mosquito. [0:01:13 – 0:01:16] Erik: A couple of state birds out there tonight. [0:01:16 – 0:01:19] Adam: Just before we hopped in here and hit record. [0:01:19 – 0:01:21] Adam: So those are the first ones I’ve seen. [0:01:21 – 0:01:21] Adam: Yeah. [0:01:22 – 0:01:28] Adam: But boy, we had a pretty magical run there from snow being gone until that moment when you see the first mozzie. [0:01:29 – 0:01:29] Erik: Yep. [0:01:31 – 0:01:33] Adam: But this is the circle of life. [0:01:34 – 0:01:34] Adam: I guess. [0:01:35 – 0:01:36] Adam: Hello. [0:01:37 – 0:01:44] Adam: Tonight’s Ronald Schera outdoor calendar fact of the night for May 20th, 2023. [0:01:45 – 0:01:45] Adam: 520. [0:01:45 – 0:01:53] Adam: Crappies are spawning and Minnesota has become the 23rd state in the union to legalize recreational marijuana. [0:01:53 – 0:01:58] Adam: Sunset is at 840 p.m. That makes it officially Tomahome after dark. [0:01:58 – 0:02:00] Erik: Oh, my. [0:02:00 – 0:02:00] Adam: Yeah. [0:02:02 – 0:02:04] Erik: Yeah, we’re in the top half. [0:02:04 – 0:02:05] Erik: We made it. [0:02:05 – 0:02:07] Erik: Let’s go. [0:02:07 – 0:02:09] Erik: That means we’re progressive. [0:02:09 – 0:02:10] Erik: We’re doing things. [0:02:10 – 0:02:12] Erik: We’re one of the cool kids. [0:02:12 – 0:02:16] Adam: Yeah, there’s a lot of good that will come from that, so you’ll love to see it. [0:02:17 – 0:02:18] Adam: Proud of my state right now. [0:02:19 – 0:02:20] Adam: I’m getting a lot done. [0:02:21 – 0:02:23] Adam: Almost restores your faith in humanity. [0:02:24 – 0:02:25] Erik: Yeah, almost. [0:02:29 – 0:02:35] Adam: Join an arrow in the shed, of course, and our good friend, Pighart, Secretary of Defense. [0:02:35 – 0:02:36] Adam: He’s still here. [0:02:36 – 0:02:37] Adam: Secretary of State. [0:02:37 – 0:02:43] Erik: That is the shittiest eating grin I think I’ve ever seen. [0:02:43 – 0:02:45] Adam: Go eat shit, Dick Cheney. [0:02:45 – 0:02:47] Adam: Like he just, he knew. [0:02:47 – 0:02:50] Adam: Every week. [0:02:50 – 0:02:51] Adam: Just tell. [0:02:51 – 0:02:56] Adam: I’ll never get tired of cursing at this Topps Dick Cheney card we have here in the shed. [0:02:57 – 0:03:00] Erik: Yeah, he’s going to be our anti-mascot of the summer. [0:03:00 – 0:03:01] Erik: That is for sure. [0:03:02 – 0:03:04] Adam: Yeah, he’s definitely the anti-Gordy. [0:03:04 – 0:03:10] Erik: Yeah, we could bring him on the trip in a few weeks and leave him in a brown volcano somewhere. [0:03:10 – 0:03:12] Adam: Yes, there we go. [0:03:12 – 0:03:14] Adam: It’s a fate worse than being burned. [0:03:15 – 0:03:20] Erik: Find one that’s got a nice pyramid and just kind of sit him right on top and hope somebody peeks. [0:03:21 – 0:03:22] Adam: Wait, is that… [0:03:22 – 0:03:27] Adam: If you peeked and saw a Dick Cheney down at the bottom of the Brown Volcano… Is that Dick Cheney there? [0:03:28 – 0:03:29] Erik: It might ruin your whole year. [0:03:29 – 0:03:36] Erik: Well, it might for a second, but then it probably would feel pretty good to let a nice beefy blast go of some like four days in. [0:03:36 – 0:03:38] Adam: That actually would be very satisfying. [0:03:38 – 0:03:40] Erik: Some Camp Chow butt dropped right on that. [0:03:41 – 0:03:41] Erik: Oh, boy. [0:03:42 – 0:03:42] Adam: Yeah. [0:03:42 – 0:03:46] Adam: I was listening to some older episodes and the story of the… [0:03:47 – 0:04:10] Adam: the park ranger going up and then giving it the old like it’s cavernous thumbs up five stars yeah go to town on it that’s how you feel just let it go business put the gravy down uh we should do that just regardless of the size of the pile in the outhouse i mean i heard the the bring one of those grabber things yeah place it [0:04:10 – 0:04:23] Adam: yes strategically placed strategically placed put it on crab somewhere if anybody can find the dick cheney card that’s what we’re gonna do yeah crabs on crabs we’re also gonna hide dick cheney and goddamn shitter you will find the ultimate prize [0:04:25 – 0:04:29] Adam: Imagine being the person that found that if you were on the search for it. [0:04:29 – 0:04:31] Adam: Like, hey, you know what we should do next weekend? [0:04:31 – 0:04:36] Adam: I heard the boys were going to put out a Dick Cheney Topps card in one of the brown volcanoes on Crabbe. [0:04:36 – 0:04:36] Adam: What do you think? [0:04:36 – 0:04:38] Erik: Yeah, it’s not for you to take. [0:04:38 – 0:04:41] Erik: It’s for you to actually deposit something onto it. [0:04:43 – 0:04:53] Adam: Let’s get to the art sponsorship of the evening for this episode 219 of Tumble Home, a proud independent Boundary Waters podcast. [0:04:53 – 0:05:00] Adam: And got some really, really special and dear art supplies for tonight’s show sponsor. [0:05:00 – 0:05:01] Adam: It’s Mystery Bag 4. [0:05:02 – 0:05:03] Adam: Question of the summer. [0:05:03 – 0:05:05] Erik: How expired will it be? [0:05:07 – 0:05:13] Adam: This one, according to the whiteboard, came in July, I believe, mid-summer of 2022. [0:05:13 – 0:05:14] Adam: Okay. [0:05:15 – 0:05:17] Adam: It’s top of the order. [0:05:17 – 0:05:18] Adam: We’re going in order. [0:05:18 – 0:05:20] Adam: This is the whole point of the whiteboard, Eric. [0:05:20 – 0:05:20] Adam: Yeah. [0:05:20 – 0:05:22] Adam: It feels to me like two big cans. [0:05:22 – 0:05:26] Adam: This is a mystery bag, four labeled as art supplies. [0:05:26 – 0:05:27] Adam: Enjoy. [0:05:27 – 0:05:28] Erik: Okay. [0:05:28 – 0:05:34] Adam: From Acid Diarrhea, a true wonderful friend of the show. [0:05:34 – 0:05:35] Adam: True man of genius. [0:05:36 – 0:05:42] Erik: And it’s… Oh, those look dark. [0:05:43 – 0:05:45] Erik: You were like, we could do these stouts. [0:05:45 – 0:05:46] Erik: And I’m like, I’m not doing a stout. [0:05:46 – 0:05:47] Erik: I’m not doing a stout, Eric. [0:05:47 – 0:05:48] Erik: Let’s do a mystery beer. [0:05:48 – 0:05:52] Erik: And you’re like, well, the mystery beer could be an even worse stout. [0:05:52 – 0:05:55] Adam: No, I think you’re going to be happy with this one, Eric. [0:05:55 – 0:05:59] Adam: It’s a Town Hall Brewery from Minneapolis, Minnesota. [0:05:59 – 0:06:02] Adam: More than 20 years of award-winning Minnesota beer. [0:06:02 – 0:06:07] Adam: This is a black H2O oatmeal stout in a massive can. [0:06:07 – 0:06:10] Adam: This feels to be about a 14-pound beer each. [0:06:11 – 0:06:40] Adam: um we’re gonna start measuring the beers in poundage yeah i bought a 30 pound bucket of mayonnaise uh for the deli the other day and it was quite impressive i think i sent you a picture just yes oh yeah i like how they way i’m like i had to google like how many pounds or how many gallons of mayonnaise is in 30 pounds it depends is what google said you could clearly see the like the goober shoot that just like yeah the end of the uh swirly uh deposit uh anyways yeah [0:06:41 – 0:06:45] Adam: Town Hall Brewery, a black H2O oatmeal stout. [0:06:45 – 0:06:48] Adam: It appears to have been canned on 4-27. [0:06:48 – 0:06:49] Erik: Of last year? [0:06:50 – 0:06:50] Adam: Obviously. [0:06:51 – 0:06:51] Adam: Obviously. [0:06:51 – 0:06:53] Adam: It was canned last year. [0:06:53 – 0:06:55] Erik: Town Hall Brewery around for 20 years? [0:06:55 – 0:06:56] Erik: I’ve never even heard of it. [0:06:57 – 0:06:58] Adam: You’re about to find out. [0:06:59 – 0:07:00] Adam: Yeah, I guess. [0:07:00 – 0:07:04] Adam: This is what you get when you brew for 20 years and then you find out. [0:07:04 – 0:07:05] Adam: Beer to go. [0:07:06 – 0:07:06] Erik: Oh, God. [0:07:07 – 0:07:10] Adam: It’s a hefty tab. [0:07:10 – 0:07:14] Erik: Yeah, this is a barrel of beer here. [0:07:14 – 0:07:17] Adam: They’re on Washington Avenue. [0:07:17 – 0:07:17] Adam: Street? [0:07:18 – 0:07:19] Adam: Oh, Avenue. [0:07:19 – 0:07:20] Erik: Yeah, I think I’ve heard of it. [0:07:21 – 0:07:23] Adam: Nelson might have a bowling alley? [0:07:23 – 0:07:24] Adam: Hold up, hold up. [0:07:25 – 0:07:26] Adam: Town Hall Lanes? [0:07:27 – 0:07:30] Adam: If they have a bowling alley, anybody at Town Hall listening? [0:07:31 – 0:07:32] Adam: I used to be a pretty good bowler. [0:07:32 – 0:07:36] Adam: I had like a 175 average back in the day, and it’s been a while. [0:07:36 – 0:07:39] Adam: I miss bowling more than almost anything from living up here. [0:07:39 – 0:07:42] Erik: Oh, they have four different breweries in the cities. [0:07:42 – 0:07:45] Adam: Yeah, I think one of them appears to be a bowling alley, or it’s just a clever name. [0:07:46 – 0:07:47] Erik: Town Hall Lanes, yeah. [0:07:50 – 0:07:51] Adam: Oh, my. [0:07:52 – 0:07:53] Adam: ABV is six, it says. [0:07:55 – 0:08:07] Adam: ah that’s a stout it’s an oatmeal stout just we’re gonna pace ourselves on these they’re big but there’s uh there’s just the two of them no need to hurry i wish it was colder that’s all i’m gonna say [0:08:10 – 0:08:11] Adam: Yeah, the mini fridge was unplugged. [0:08:11 – 0:08:12] Adam: It got a little warm. [0:08:12 – 0:08:13] Adam: We forgot to plug the mini fridge in. [0:08:14 – 0:08:15] Adam: So you always have to unplug it. [0:08:15 – 0:08:18] Erik: Last week, because it makes a little too much noise. [0:08:18 – 0:08:20] Adam: I’m going to get a quieter mini fridge. [0:08:21 – 0:08:25] Adam: So, yeah, they’re not really cold. [0:08:25 – 0:08:28] Adam: It’s been a little too nice, but I’m not going to complain about that. [0:08:29 – 0:08:29] Adam: No. [0:08:29 – 0:08:30] Adam: I don’t want to be like that. [0:08:31 – 0:08:57] Adam: my no complaints no hollandaise although it is staring us straight in the eye like uh it’s still there it’s just threatening it’s gonna be good next week too and we’ll bring some on the trip yeah we’re closing in on our crab lake permit crabs on crabs has been acquired for early june so we’re in we always keep our promises and whatever the bingo deems to be our fate we will accept and uh [0:08:57 – 0:09:02] Adam: The bingo balls have chosen to send us to Crab, where we will have Crab. [0:09:02 – 0:09:03] Erik: A Promise Keepers podcast. [0:09:03 – 0:09:05] Adam: Then we’re heading up to Cummings for sure. [0:09:05 – 0:09:09] Adam: That’s where I think we’re going to do the turkey gravy poutine deluxe. [0:09:10 – 0:09:13] Erik: Yeah, that’s where we’re going to leave old pig heart. [0:09:14 – 0:09:15] Adam: Yeah, we’re going to put it up on Cummings. [0:09:15 – 0:09:16] Adam: You got to earn it. [0:09:16 – 0:09:18] Adam: You don’t want to shit on Dick Cheney’s face. [0:09:18 – 0:09:19] Adam: You’re not getting it on crabs. [0:09:19 – 0:09:20] Adam: It’s going all the way to Cummings. [0:09:21 – 0:09:21] Adam: Yeah. [0:09:21 – 0:09:25] Adam: And then who knows, but we got some ideas. [0:09:25 – 0:09:28] Adam: So it’s going to be a pretty exciting trip, but that’s coming up real soon. [0:09:29 – 0:09:33] Adam: But mainly we want to know, we’ve got to get deeper into the thread of where are you all going. [0:09:34 – 0:09:36] Adam: We’re continuing. [0:09:36 – 0:09:40] Adam: You ain’t all getting on a boxcar with the spindle. [0:09:40 – 0:09:40] Adam: What is it? [0:09:41 – 0:09:42] Adam: Stick and bindle? [0:09:42 – 0:09:42] Adam: Stick and bindle. [0:09:42 – 0:09:43] Adam: I can never get that right. [0:09:44 – 0:09:46] Erik: The old spindle. [0:09:46 – 0:09:54] Adam: Only 90 are going to make it onto the boxcar and to our eventual championship round on Wabakimi. [0:09:55 – 0:10:16] Erik: yeah the tumble turning is gonna be played live action this year with real tumble homies actually going to get the participants involved this year there’s actually going to be a real moose loons real northern lights if the northern lights don’t show up then yeah they’re out so yeah too bad for them too bad for them congratulations there were some northern lights last night i saw [0:10:17 – 0:10:18] Adam: I missed them, yeah. [0:10:18 – 0:10:19] Adam: Really bummed. [0:10:20 – 0:10:27] Adam: Went to bed quite early last night, and then, yeah, that’s a horrible feeling when you wake up, because I noticed, like, I took the dog out before bed. [0:10:28 – 0:10:30] Adam: Stars look very crispy and twinkly out there. [0:10:30 – 0:10:31] Adam: It’s a pretty nice night. [0:10:32 – 0:10:33] Adam: I got to get to bed, though. [0:10:33 – 0:10:34] Adam: I’m just too tired. [0:10:34 – 0:10:35] Adam: Then you wake up to all the pictures. [0:10:35 – 0:10:36] Adam: You’re like, shoot. [0:10:36 – 0:10:38] Erik: Yeah, that happens. [0:10:38 – 0:10:40] Erik: You know, that’s part of it, but. [0:10:41 – 0:10:48] Adam: Yeah, we had this thread posted by a dear friend of the show, Hopalicious, three months ago now. [0:10:48 – 0:10:52] Adam: And I think we got four or five comments into it last week. [0:10:52 – 0:10:55] Adam: So we’re going to try and do a better effort on making it down there. [0:10:56 – 0:10:57] Adam: Yeah, we’re going to buckle down. [0:10:58 – 0:11:05] Adam: We’re going to get it, you know, less time jabbering on about the desert storm. [0:11:05 – 0:11:07] Erik: There’s no gifts from… [0:11:08 – 0:11:10] Erik: The West. [0:11:10 – 0:11:12] Adam: Just these black H2Os from Minneapolis. [0:11:12 – 0:11:17] Adam: What are you giving these warm oatmeal stouts in the 12-pound can? [0:11:22 – 0:11:25] Erik: I’m going to give it 5 out of 10 O’Clocks. [0:11:27 – 0:11:27] Adam: All right. [0:11:27 – 0:11:39] Adam: Yeah, I’m going to give it slightly better at 6 out of 10 because I’m not sure whose fault it was that the fridge didn’t get plugged back in, but it’s probably my fault, so I’m going to take one for the team there. [0:11:39 – 0:11:42] Adam: It should have been a better score, but it was ill-kept. [0:11:45 – 0:11:46] Adam: I’m still going to drink it. [0:11:46 – 0:11:47] Adam: It’s still pretty good. [0:11:47 – 0:11:48] Adam: It’s a stout. [0:11:48 – 0:11:54] Adam: I’d rather drink a warmer stout than a Mick Golden or something. [0:11:54 – 0:11:55] Erik: I can’t taste it. [0:11:56 – 0:11:58] Adam: This has got some real character to it. [0:11:59 – 0:11:59] Adam: It can handle. [0:11:59 – 0:12:05] Erik: I can’t tell if it’s the character from the beer or the fact that it has just been left abandoned at room temperature for over a year. [0:12:05 – 0:12:09] Adam: We’re going to take the hint and start doing two episodes a week so we can get through these things. [0:12:09 – 0:12:12] Adam: They’re sending in the art supplies at a crazy rate. [0:12:12 – 0:12:25] Erik: Yeah, we probably should do that just so we can knock back down, beat back the beer sponsors so we can get back on a reasonable schedule so we’re not drinking beers from two years ago. [0:12:26 – 0:12:35] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know who was there, but I did meet a tumble homie yesterday at work, and then today I left just slightly early to try and get home. [0:12:36 – 0:12:40] Adam: And then I was texted immediately like, hey, somebody just dropped off a sixer. [0:12:40 – 0:12:41] Adam: I said, did you get a name? [0:12:42 – 0:12:44] Adam: And it just said Indiana. [0:12:45 – 0:12:47] Adam: So bless your Hoosier hearts. [0:12:47 – 0:12:49] Adam: I was actually wearing my Indiana hoodie today, so. [0:12:50 – 0:12:54] Erik: I ran into somebody at the gas station who recognized me and bought me a tube of Carmex and a chuck wagon. [0:12:55 – 0:12:57] Erik: So thank you to that tumble homie. [0:12:57 – 0:12:58] Erik: Man, chuck wagons. [0:12:59 – 0:13:00] Erik: See you, ladies and gentlemen. [0:13:00 – 0:13:04] Erik: Start a podcast and you get free sandwiches and Carmex. [0:13:04 – 0:13:08] Adam: Yeah, but we’re not, you know. [0:13:09 – 0:13:13] Adam: We’re semi-famous in Grand Marais, but we’re definitely not celebrities. [0:13:14 – 0:13:15] Erik: Yeah. [0:13:16 – 0:13:17] Adam: Somebody asked me, are you a celebrity? [0:13:17 – 0:13:18] Adam: I said, no. [0:13:19 – 0:13:21] Adam: But I mean, really, if I was, you would know who I was. [0:13:21 – 0:13:22] Adam: Then you wouldn’t have to ask. [0:13:23 – 0:13:25] Adam: Yeah, that question answers the question. [0:13:25 – 0:13:25] Adam: Exactly. [0:13:25 – 0:13:26] Adam: It’s one of those. [0:13:26 – 0:13:27] Adam: There’s probably a name for that. [0:13:28 – 0:13:28] Adam: Yeah. [0:13:28 – 0:13:30] Adam: I hope we’ll never reach that level. [0:13:30 – 0:13:30] Adam: That would be… [0:13:32 – 0:13:34] Adam: That would mean that I’m probably not working at the co-op anymore. [0:13:35 – 0:13:38] Erik: Yeah, I don’t mind it when it happens. [0:13:38 – 0:13:39] Erik: It’s always fun. [0:13:39 – 0:13:45] Erik: Every once in a while, but to be like an actual celebrity and be constantly recognized, that would be a huge pain in the ass. [0:13:46 – 0:13:46] Adam: Yeah. [0:13:47 – 0:13:52] Adam: I like taking a picture with somebody, but yeah, I wouldn’t want a paparazzi trying to sneak a peek. [0:13:52 – 0:13:53] Erik: Yeah, no. [0:13:53 – 0:13:55] Erik: I don’t need to get Princess Diana at any time soon. [0:13:55 – 0:13:56] Adam: No. [0:13:58 – 0:13:58] Adam: Uh… [0:14:01 – 0:14:02] Erik: You want to talk about satellite phones? [0:14:02 – 0:14:03] Erik: No. [0:14:03 – 0:14:04] Erik: Or… No, no, no, no, no. [0:14:05 – 0:14:06] Erik: Garmin inReaches? [0:14:06 – 0:14:07] Erik: No, no. [0:14:07 – 0:14:08] Erik: We don’t need to talk about that, do we? [0:14:09 – 0:14:10] Erik: We have so much to read. [0:14:10 – 0:14:17] Adam: We have so much… Maybe on a future episode, but I just want to say that the Discord channel had a pretty robust discussion going on about… [0:14:17 – 0:14:22] Erik: I definitely think that there is a conversation to be had about satellite phones. [0:14:26 – 0:14:31] Erik: I’m not sure what the best word for it would be, but just the… And here we are talking about it. [0:14:32 – 0:14:33] Adam: We’re not going to talk about it. [0:14:33 – 0:14:47] Erik: But the concept of having something like that with you and the feeling of security that it brings you, but then also the slight bit of connectivity that it adds to the trip that may take away from the feeling for some. [0:14:48 – 0:14:50] Adam: Yeah, it’s a bit of a tether. [0:14:51 – 0:14:53] Adam: Anyways, pretty good comments going on there. [0:14:54 – 0:14:58] Adam: A lot of people just asking basic questions like, how does the weather package work and all that? [0:14:58 – 0:15:04] Adam: Yeah, I looked into them a while back, and there’s a lot of research on those things. [0:15:04 – 0:15:05] Adam: There’s a lot of different options. [0:15:06 – 0:15:18] Adam: So I think this is a good topic for future discussion, but for sure, you know, as people get back into the, the paddling season and the water’s really cold, um, you know, uh, accidents will happen and, [0:15:19 – 0:15:21] Erik: We’ve had some accidents this spring, unfortunately. [0:15:21 – 0:15:29] Adam: You know, and it just gets people thinking about, you know, safety and peace of mind and how comfortable are you being really out there in the wilderness like that. [0:15:29 – 0:15:37] Adam: So, you know, when I moved up here, I was all gung-ho about, like, monkey-wrenching the cell phone towers if they ever tried to put those things up. [0:15:37 – 0:15:38] Adam: Still hasn’t happened. [0:15:38 – 0:15:40] Adam: Still hasn’t happened fully. [0:15:40 – 0:15:44] Adam: You know, there is cell phone coverage in a lot of the park these days, but… [0:15:44 – 0:15:51] Adam: And, yeah, nowadays I find myself thinking more and more like, you know, it would be nice to have at least the ability to text out or receive a text. [0:15:52 – 0:15:55] Erik: Well, I often wonder, like, what’s the incentive for these cell phone companies? [0:15:55 – 0:16:04] Erik: Is it just that they’re taking advantage of, like, grants or money that’s available to continue putting up cell phone towers? [0:16:04 – 0:16:07] Erik: Because it’s not like they’re serving a much larger community. [0:16:07 – 0:16:09] Adam: Yeah, it’s probably some sort of deal like that. [0:16:09 – 0:16:11] Adam: Like, you’ve got to cover these areas if you’re going to. [0:16:12 – 0:16:29] Adam: but i don’t know but it’s yeah future uh it’s future revenue or something like just getting the site secured who knows these capitalist pigs will take advantage of every penny if they can well you send an email over to pig heart there he probably i’m sure there’s money to be made by doing it they’re doing it from the kindness of their yeah the altruism of uh [0:16:31 – 0:16:56] Adam: yeah they’re not fighting tooth and nail to stick towers within eyesight of the boundary waters just to be good samaritans it’s because it’s for safety anyways hop on the discord if you have anything to say on this i think it’s in the camp gear sub thread on the discord which there’s a lot of sub threads i may have that wrong but just search around you’ll find it and or um you know hit us up on the subreddit as well we could talk about it there [0:16:56 – 0:17:17] Adam: could be a good future topic but something to think about this time of year uh something to think about this time of year right now that we can’t skip is the fiddleheads eric oh the ferns you clip them you throw them in a salad you fry them up beautiful yeah somebody told me it’s like a mix of a broccoli a bean and an asparagus what do you think about that [0:17:17 – 0:17:19] Erik: I mean, that sounds about right, I guess. [0:17:19 – 0:17:20] Adam: Yeah. [0:17:20 – 0:17:20] Adam: Yeah. [0:17:20 – 0:17:32] Adam: I haven’t really dabbled, and I found a nice patch of them and brought them home, and I was glad I looked up how to do it because apparently you’re supposed to parboil them a little bit before you saute them. [0:17:32 – 0:17:33] Erik: Kind of like a Brussels sprout, maybe? [0:17:34 – 0:17:37] Adam: I guess it probably doesn’t matter if you saute them enough, but yeah. [0:17:38 – 0:17:44] Adam: I guess it’s helpful to boil them in a little bit of salted water for seven minutes and then throw them in the frying pan. [0:17:44 – 0:17:45] Erik: Sure. [0:17:45 – 0:17:46] Adam: But damn, they were really good. [0:17:47 – 0:17:48] Adam: That was the first time I’ve had them. [0:17:49 – 0:17:51] Adam: I’ve been living here full time since 2011. [0:17:51 – 0:17:54] Adam: This is the first time I’ve had fiddleheads. [0:17:54 – 0:17:59] Adam: I doubt they’re all, they’re probably all over the Midwest if I’m thinking about this clearly. [0:17:59 – 0:18:00] Erik: Oh, surely. [0:18:00 – 0:18:00] Erik: Yeah. [0:18:01 – 0:18:09] Adam: But yeah, that one got me thinking about morels, you know, and how I’m really longing for the morel mushrooms since I moved up here. [0:18:10 – 0:18:10] Erik: Yeah. [0:18:10 – 0:18:14] Adam: Bowling and morel mushrooms is probably two of the things I miss the most. [0:18:14 – 0:18:36] Adam: can’t really find the morels up here all that much yeah you see the false morels and they’re very gnarly looking like nasty boys you’re always like oh uh oh no but uh yeah uh josh buddy josh found one over on the land a black morel you ever heard of this [0:18:36 – 0:18:37] Adam: A black morel? [0:18:37 – 0:18:38] Adam: Yeah. [0:18:38 – 0:18:38] Adam: Edible? [0:18:39 – 0:18:39] Adam: Apparently. [0:18:40 – 0:18:44] Adam: It’s a variant of the edible morel. [0:18:44 – 0:18:45] Adam: Okay. [0:18:45 – 0:18:49] Adam: I’ve heard of people finding morels up here ever since I moved here. [0:18:49 – 0:18:49] Adam: I’ve never seen one. [0:18:50 – 0:18:54] Adam: And I’ve never actually, you know, nobody’s ever shown me a picture of one. [0:18:54 – 0:18:57] Adam: Like, these morel hunters are very secretive weirdos. [0:18:57 – 0:18:57] Adam: Yeah. [0:18:58 – 0:18:58] Adam: And rightly so. [0:18:58 – 0:18:59] Adam: Yeah. [0:19:00 – 0:19:04] Adam: Yeah, this is the first time that somebody sent me a picture where I was like, damn, that might actually be a real morel. [0:19:05 – 0:19:11] Adam: I’d never seen them that color down in the Driftless when I was picking back in the day, but apparently that is a… [0:19:14 – 0:19:15] Adam: A good variant. [0:19:16 – 0:19:16] Adam: Okay. [0:19:16 – 0:19:17] Adam: So, anyways, there’s hope. [0:19:18 – 0:19:18] Erik: There’s hope. [0:19:18 – 0:19:27] Erik: There’s also hope for you Patreon subscribers, both past, present, and future. [0:19:28 – 0:19:30] Erik: Talking, uh… [0:19:31 – 0:19:32] Erik: Jennifer’s Body? [0:19:32 – 0:19:34] Erik: Yeah. [0:19:34 – 0:19:36] Erik: The Megan Fox classic. [0:19:37 – 0:19:38] Erik: It’s elevated horror. [0:19:38 – 0:19:39] Erik: 2009. [0:19:40 – 0:19:54] Erik: Some may say, based on grammar, some would be hard-pressed to argue against the influence on Judge Magny’s State Park and the Devil’s Kettle. [0:19:54 – 0:20:05] Erik: Based on the fact that the town is called Devil’s Kettle and there is literally a swirling pool of water that goes nowhere that a murder weapon is disposed into. [0:20:05 – 0:20:06] Erik: And ping pong balls. [0:20:06 – 0:20:07] Erik: And ping pong balls. [0:20:07 – 0:20:10] Adam: Their Devil’s Kettle looks way more impressive than ours. [0:20:11 – 0:20:13] Adam: They really played it up. [0:20:13 – 0:20:18] Adam: The whole waterfall goes into a whole goodbye like a toilet in the soil. [0:20:18 – 0:20:21] Erik: It’s like a whole swirling toilet. [0:20:21 – 0:20:25] Adam: That’s not what the real Devil’s Kettle looks like for any of you who have not hiked the… [0:20:26 – 0:20:29] Adam: It’s kind of a longer hike on Magni on the… Stairs. [0:20:29 – 0:20:29] Adam: On the east. [0:20:29 – 0:20:30] Adam: A lot of stairs. [0:20:32 – 0:20:49] Adam: gotta get your love that hike yeah that’s good hike but that’s not what it looks like at all if anybody hasn’t gone up there it’s worth the hike though for sure go check it out go try and throw something into it it’s kind of a heave yeah you really gotta get from the platform you’re not gonna get rid of a murder weapon that easily at judge magni [0:20:49 – 0:20:53] Erik: If you’ve got some beat-up old discs, you could maybe bring up there. [0:20:53 – 0:21:00] Adam: You might be able to need like a 7-speed, like an old beat-in Eagle or something. [0:21:00 – 0:21:00] Erik: Yeah. [0:21:01 – 0:21:05] Adam: Or you might be able, if you’ve got a good arm on you, pump like a classic rock in there. [0:21:06 – 0:21:06] Erik: Sure. [0:21:07 – 0:21:07] Erik: Straight in it. [0:21:07 – 0:21:08] Adam: There we go. [0:21:08 – 0:21:11] Adam: But anyways, yeah, we’re going to be talking about that later tonight. [0:21:11 – 0:21:12] Adam: It’s waterfall season. [0:21:12 – 0:21:20] Erik: We’ll be talking about how the devil’s kettle is all clogged up with muskets and all kinds of… Who knows what you’re going to find down there. [0:21:20 – 0:21:23] Adam: Yeah, you might find a portal to the island on Lost. [0:21:24 – 0:21:24] Adam: Nice. [0:21:24 – 0:21:25] Adam: Where does it go? [0:21:25 – 0:21:27] Adam: Nobody knows. [0:21:27 – 0:21:29] Erik: Well, where are you going? [0:21:29 – 0:21:31] Erik: We know where we’re going. [0:21:31 – 0:21:37] Erik: The old wheel of misfortune has been fortunate, and we’re going to crab in a few weeks. [0:21:37 – 0:21:38] Erik: Fortuna. [0:21:38 – 0:21:44] Erik: We’re probably going to read some responses here from people that maybe some of these trips have happened, currently happening. [0:21:46 – 0:21:50] Erik: It’s always a great time of year to discuss the future, the potential. [0:21:50 – 0:21:54] Adam: Yeah, unfortunately, the Garmin inReach, you can’t listen to Tomahawk live in the field. [0:21:54 – 0:21:55] Adam: Isn’t that a podcast feature? [0:21:55 – 0:21:56] Adam: That’s coming. [0:21:56 – 0:21:57] Adam: That’s a few years out, probably. [0:21:57 – 0:22:04] Erik: Yeah, we’re in talks with Garmin for us to be an exclusive podcast, so a feature of that. [0:22:04 – 0:22:05] Adam: Only on the Garmin inReach. [0:22:05 – 0:22:06] Adam: Yeah. [0:22:06 – 0:22:09] Erik: We’re only on Garmin, and it’s the only podcast on Garmin. [0:22:09 – 0:22:11] Erik: It just plays on repeat and at random. [0:22:12 – 0:22:13] Erik: Tumble Home Radio. [0:22:13 – 0:22:15] Adam: Yeah, you’re not allowed to turn it off. [0:22:15 – 0:22:18] Adam: It’s part of the terms and conditions. [0:22:18 – 0:22:19] Adam: Not allowed to turn it off. [0:22:19 – 0:22:20] Erik: Not allowed to turn the volume down. [0:22:21 – 0:22:24] Adam: They’re still yelling about Dick Cheney. [0:22:24 – 0:22:25] Erik: Buried in a pack somewhere. [0:22:25 – 0:22:30] Erik: Just a teeny little voice of us complaining about everything. [0:22:30 – 0:22:30] Erik: But… [0:22:32 – 0:22:36] Erik: Let’s get back into it on the subreddit. [0:22:37 – 0:22:43] Erik: R, tumblehomecasts at reddit and tumblehomecasts at gmail.com. [0:22:43 – 0:22:44] Adam: M, fair. [0:22:44 – 0:22:44] Adam: G, 12. [0:22:52 – 0:23:14] Erik: you’re first up my good person can’t tell by the uh what do they call them the reddit guys you never can tell the avatar your little avatar dongle there’s such the spectrum of avatar uh reddit avatars is vast it’s vast it could be any anything anybody any anywhere that’s the future [0:23:14 – 0:23:43] Erik: been on the list to do for a while now so heading in Stewart River end of July route TBD but thinking out Mudro taking two 13 year old boys along with my brother and maybe others the boys have been on three or four trips already and they’ve gotten stronger so you’ll see if they are up for the long walk to the stew the stew entry point 19 bang it [0:23:44 – 0:23:47] Erik: Common phrase now amongst the boys is, don’t be a Bobby. [0:23:48 – 0:23:48] Adam: There we go. [0:23:48 – 0:23:52] Erik: The influence Tumble Home has had on the world grows. [0:23:53 – 0:23:55] Adam: Yeah, I saw some stats the other day. [0:23:55 – 0:23:58] Adam: The name Bobby amongst new babies is way down. [0:23:58 – 0:23:59] Erik: I bet. [0:24:00 – 0:24:00] Adam: Yeah. [0:24:00 – 0:24:01] Adam: Probably because of us. [0:24:01 – 0:24:02] Adam: Probably. [0:24:02 – 0:24:03] Adam: We’re going to take credit for it. [0:24:03 – 0:24:06] Adam: I’m not going to say we did, but wink, we did. [0:24:07 – 0:24:08] Adam: Wink. [0:24:08 – 0:24:08] Adam: He’s winking. [0:24:09 – 0:24:10] Adam: Not a winking going on in the shed this season. [0:24:11 – 0:24:15] Erik: Yeah, the only time I’ve been up to Stewart is on a winter dog sled trip. [0:24:15 – 0:24:17] Erik: I don’t remember the river being quite long and windy. [0:24:18 – 0:24:18] Adam: Yeah. [0:24:20 – 0:24:23] Adam: Just south of the Sundial PMA up in there. [0:24:23 – 0:24:25] Adam: One of the better PMAs, I would think. [0:24:26 – 0:24:26] Erik: Oh, yeah. [0:24:26 – 0:24:27] Erik: It’s a premier PMA. [0:24:27 – 0:24:29] Adam: Yeah, 19 still on the bingo ball. [0:24:30 – 0:24:37] Adam: I haven’t been on that one myself, so that’ll be on the show for the bingo ball where you’ve never been episode. [0:24:37 – 0:24:38] Adam: Future ball potential. [0:24:39 – 0:24:42] Erik: I’ll read another one here, and then we’ll turn the computer. [0:24:43 – 0:24:43] Adam: Thank you. [0:24:43 – 0:24:44] Erik: Include me out, too. [0:24:45 – 0:24:48] Erik: I have a Missing Link in early August and a South Lake at the end of August. [0:24:49 – 0:24:52] Erik: Sorry, early August for Missing Link, South Lake at the end of August. [0:24:52 – 0:24:56] Erik: Really enjoying looking into and acquiring gear these days. [0:24:57 – 0:25:03] Erik: I will also be staying at the Sag Lodge with a group of 22. [0:25:03 – 0:25:08] Erik: These are our closest friends and our kids for the early August trip. [0:25:09 – 0:25:12] Erik: Big lodge stay up there on Sag. [0:25:12 – 0:25:18] Erik: Convinced a friend who I don’t get to see very often to join me on a six-day border route trip. [0:25:18 – 0:25:18] Erik: All right. [0:25:19 – 0:25:21] Erik: Which is the late August trip entering at South. [0:25:21 – 0:25:22] Erik: Border battle. [0:25:22 – 0:25:22] Erik: Here we come. [0:25:23 – 0:25:24] Erik: Humble brag moment. [0:25:24 – 0:25:27] Erik: Still without a drag of a cigarette since quitting. [0:25:27 – 0:25:28] Erik: Oh, yeah. [0:25:28 – 0:25:29] Adam: This is the… [0:25:29 – 0:25:30] Erik: Rib Lake. [0:25:30 – 0:25:32] Erik: Yes, the old solitude. [0:25:32 – 0:25:40] Erik: The best way to go ahead and get off the nicotine is just to plunge yourself into a wilderness where there are no gas stations. [0:25:41 – 0:25:42] Erik: Congrats on that still. [0:25:42 – 0:25:48] Erik: You can always pop back out after that week and just end up at your 7-Eleven and start from scratch. [0:25:48 – 0:25:49] Adam: But you won’t. [0:25:49 – 0:25:49] Erik: You won’t. [0:25:50 – 0:25:51] Erik: And you’re there. [0:25:51 – 0:25:52] Erik: And you’re doing it. [0:25:52 – 0:25:53] Erik: Happy paddling. [0:25:53 – 0:25:53] Erik: Include me out. [0:25:53 – 0:25:55] Erik: Have a good couple of trips. [0:25:55 – 0:25:57] Erik: You’ve got to wait a couple of months. [0:25:57 – 0:25:59] Adam: You’re going on the topper option there yourself, I assume? [0:25:59 – 0:26:02] Erik: No description in terms of details on the… [0:26:02 – 0:26:04] Adam: I’m paddling the whole length of Gunplant. [0:26:04 – 0:26:28] Adam: gunflint entry or the topper connoisseurs entry remains to be seen all right next up on the show good friend of the show exhausted horty three months ago seven boxes of franzia the husband and i scored a permit for liz swamp in late august i’m going to finally see the cliffs of winchy [0:26:29 – 0:26:37] Adam: We’re also hoping to see a moose over the horseshoe area since he’s seen moose over there, and we’ve heard a lot of other people report the same. [0:26:38 – 0:26:46] Adam: I have the trip spanning five days right now, and we talked about shortening it if need be, but I’m highly doubting we’re going to do that. [0:26:46 – 0:26:48] Adam: Work can live without us. [0:26:49 – 0:26:50] Adam: LOL. [0:26:51 – 0:26:53] Adam: And I might add, huzzah, huzzah. [0:26:53 – 0:26:54] Adam: Thank you for the comment. [0:26:55 – 0:26:58] Erik: Yeah, work can always find another way. [0:27:02 – 0:27:06] Adam: Yeah, you’re not going to regret calling in an extra day off of work, I would say. [0:27:06 – 0:27:08] Adam: Especially if it involves Winchell. [0:27:09 – 0:27:11] Adam: Spend an extra day on Winchell if you can. [0:27:11 – 0:27:12] Erik: That’d be amazing. [0:27:12 – 0:27:15] Erik: Nobody gets to the end wishing that they had worked more, that’s for sure. [0:27:17 – 0:27:40] Adam: but the money what do you think dick cheney bootstraps stop buying that what is it now it’s got a we’ve transitioned past avocado toast right that’s like a 10 year old yeah yeah it is i don’t know what the thing is now hollandaise liqueur yeah yeah i’ve [0:27:40 – 0:27:46] Erik: Hey, you goddamn kids, stop drinking all that Honda’s liqueur and fancy iPhones. [0:27:46 – 0:27:47] Adam: You bums. [0:27:47 – 0:27:48] Adam: The bums will always lose. [0:27:49 – 0:27:51] Adam: Is he in the Big Lebowski mixed with… [0:27:51 – 0:27:52] Erik: He does kind of look like the Big Lebowski. [0:27:53 – 0:27:55] Adam: Maybe the Big Lebowski was based on Dick Cheney. [0:27:55 – 0:27:57] Erik: I’ve never even put that together. [0:27:57 – 0:28:00] Erik: You’re not going looking for a job just like that on a weekday. [0:28:01 – 0:28:01] Adam: Wow. [0:28:02 – 0:28:02] Erik: What day is it? [0:28:04 – 0:28:08] Adam: Next up on the show, great friend of the show, Inglars, three months ago. [0:28:08 – 0:28:21] Adam: I’ve got a Mudro permit for mid-June aiming for fairy gun moose camp or gall thunder bear trap if my crew is feeling a little more ambitious. [0:28:21 – 0:28:22] Adam: I hope they are. [0:28:23 – 0:28:28] Adam: I’m still in planning stages on a trip with my 10-year-old, his friend, and the friend’s dad. [0:28:29 – 0:28:35] Adam: All three are first-timers, and I’m feeling the pressure to give them an experience they will want to repeat. [0:28:35 – 0:28:43] Adam: We’re going in mid-September, not sure the destination yet, thinking we will rent a three-person canoe and stick the boys in the middle. [0:28:43 – 0:28:44] Adam: That’s a good idea, yeah. [0:28:45 – 0:28:46] Adam: Simplify. [0:28:46 – 0:28:48] Adam: All one boat, if you can. [0:28:48 – 0:28:52] Adam: I’ve loved the trips where we pack a lot of people and dogs and gear into one big boat. [0:28:53 – 0:28:54] Erik: It’s a lot more fun. [0:28:54 – 0:28:59] Adam: Yeah, you might have a little bit of trouble on a narrow portage, but even that’s fun. [0:29:01 – 0:29:02] Adam: I love a huge boat. [0:29:02 – 0:29:10] Adam: I’ve always said a Min 3 would be, if I could buy my first canoe again, maybe just go for a Min 3. [0:29:10 – 0:29:12] Erik: They make Min 4s too now. [0:29:13 – 0:29:15] Adam: Yeah, you can do everything with those things. [0:29:16 – 0:29:16] Adam: Why not? [0:29:16 – 0:29:17] Erik: GD Yacht. [0:29:18 – 0:29:20] Adam: Yeah, the old personal yacht thing. [0:29:21 – 0:29:23] Adam: I just glanced at one of the replies in here. [0:29:24 – 0:29:25] Adam: I thought it was talking about Baghdad. [0:29:25 – 0:29:28] Adam: I’ve been transfixed, but it was talking about Baghdad. [0:29:28 – 0:29:30] Adam: So I scrolled up on you. [0:29:30 – 0:29:32] Adam: You’re all cute up there, Eric. [0:29:33 – 0:29:35] Erik: Pequod Seapod. [0:29:36 – 0:29:42] Erik: Little Gabby for a solo trip in early May maybe has already happened or maybe didn’t because of ice. [0:29:43 – 0:29:52] Erik: Depending on conditions, planning to attempt bushwhacking down Pagami Creek into Lake One, then curl back to Gabby via South Kawishawi. [0:29:53 – 0:30:01] Erik: If conditions are crap, I’m spending the week in and around the southern corner of the Kawishawi Triangle. [0:30:02 – 0:30:03] Adam: Yeah, I’m pointing at it there. [0:30:04 – 0:30:04] Adam: I seencha. [0:30:05 – 0:30:07] Adam: There he is, little Gabbro. [0:30:08 – 0:30:09] Adam: Never been in there. [0:30:10 – 0:30:11] Adam: It’s all new down there in the triangle. [0:30:12 – 0:30:14] Erik: It’s only ever been a winter exploration for me. [0:30:15 – 0:30:19] Erik: The old dog sled backyard there for me, but never open water. [0:30:21 – 0:30:28] Erik: Still a couple of balls in the hopper that could be future trips for us, but not the next one, that’s for sure. [0:30:28 – 0:30:31] Adam: I’m going to, like, illegally wait some of the balls so they never come out. [0:30:33 – 0:30:34] Adam: But which ones? [0:30:35 – 0:30:35] Adam: Hog. [0:30:35 – 0:30:36] Adam: I’ll never tell. [0:30:36 – 0:30:37] Erik: Not hog. [0:30:37 – 0:30:38] Adam: Bog and hog. [0:30:38 – 0:30:41] Erik: Yeah, bog’s just not even in there. [0:30:41 – 0:30:42] Adam: Yeah, what? [0:30:42 – 0:30:43] Adam: I’ve never heard of it. [0:30:43 – 0:30:45] Adam: I don’t think so. [0:30:45 – 0:30:46] Adam: Is that a thing? [0:30:46 – 0:30:47] Erik: It’s bog. [0:30:47 – 0:30:49] Erik: What are we going to do for four days on bog? [0:30:50 – 0:30:52] Erik: Got to bring some games. [0:30:52 – 0:30:54] Erik: Got to bring a lot of fishing equipment. [0:30:54 – 0:30:57] Adam: Got to read a lot of Cormac McCarthy novels for sure. [0:30:57 – 0:30:59] Adam: Just read Blood Meridian four times. [0:30:59 – 0:30:59] Erik: Yeah. [0:31:00 – 0:31:04] Erik: EMAC 1315. [0:31:05 – 0:31:09] Erik: First trip to the Big Q in June. [0:31:09 – 0:31:09] Erik: Yes. [0:31:10 – 0:31:10] Adam: Hell yeah. [0:31:10 – 0:31:11] Adam: Yes. [0:31:11 – 0:31:13] Erik: Ended up having a plan. [0:31:14 – 0:31:19] Erik: Having to plan a shorter trip than we had hoped, but we are getting a tow up to Prairie Portage. [0:31:20 – 0:31:24] Erik: Then five days, four nights in Agnes slash Louisa. [0:31:24 – 0:31:26] Erik: Ah, the whirlpool. [0:31:26 – 0:31:28] Erik: Hit that bathtub up, baby, for me. [0:31:29 – 0:31:35] Erik: Also going out of Little Indian Sioux River north in September, thinking of heading north and east towards some of the smaller lakes. [0:31:36 – 0:32:00] Erik: so excited to have two trips planned this year yeah the theme on the uh this time of year doing these posts thank you emac 1315 thank you for the comment but it’s always like we get to it hasn’t been apparent so far but it could become apparent but a lot of times we get to some of these comments and it’s like i got eight trips planned and it’s just like wow geez what what am i [0:32:00 – 0:32:01] Erik: What am I doing wrong? [0:32:02 – 0:32:03] Erik: Oh, that’s right. [0:32:03 – 0:32:05] Erik: I took five months off of life. [0:32:06 – 0:32:09] Erik: So that’s kind of why I don’t get to go on one, two trips. [0:32:12 – 0:32:13] Erik: Well, yeah. [0:32:13 – 0:32:15] Adam: Sometimes less is more. [0:32:15 – 0:32:16] Erik: Yeah, it’s a balance. [0:32:16 – 0:32:18] Adam: Somebody had said it maybe last week. [0:32:18 – 0:32:23] Adam: It was like, I’m trying to do a couple longer trips rather than three or four short trips, right? [0:32:25 – 0:32:26] Adam: I can appreciate that. [0:32:26 – 0:32:29] Adam: Where we live, it’s easier to do little short trips when you can fit them in. [0:32:29 – 0:32:34] Adam: But if you’ve got to travel a long ways, yeah, try and go for longer. [0:32:34 – 0:32:36] Adam: I mean, gosh, I wish I just had the whole summer off to paddle, though. [0:32:36 – 0:32:37] Adam: What could we do? [0:32:38 – 0:32:39] Adam: All the places we could see. [0:32:40 – 0:32:43] Erik: Yeah, I think… [0:32:45 – 0:32:46] Erik: I don’t know. [0:32:47 – 0:32:51] Erik: Something about another long trip in Quetico is… [0:32:52 – 0:32:59] Erik: Something that I definitely want to do before my body fully gives out. [0:33:00 – 0:33:02] Erik: So I got about 20 years to do that. [0:33:02 – 0:33:02] Erik: Maybe 10. [0:33:04 – 0:33:05] Erik: I keep drinking at this rate. [0:33:05 – 0:33:12] Erik: But it’s not as appealing to me to do a big, long Boundary Waters trip… [0:33:13 – 0:33:34] Erik: I feel like I do like the like five to 10 day trips in the Bajau waters, but like something about the Quetico offers up so much more in terms of feeling like 10 to 30 days is like where I come down on like, you just get chewed up in terms of like time up there. [0:33:34 – 0:33:40] Erik: We were talking last fall about that trip I did with our friends from Wisconsin and they came up and we had a week and [0:33:40 – 0:33:47] Erik: And we were still kind of only able to do a little out and back because of the wind and the weather. [0:33:47 – 0:33:52] Adam: And all of a sudden it’s like, man, you need, you like need as much time as possible to like. [0:33:52 – 0:33:57] Adam: Well, there’s similar acreage, you know, between the B-dub, the B and the Q. [0:33:57 – 0:33:58] Erik: The B and the Q, same acreage. [0:33:58 – 0:34:04] Adam: The Q is one big block, you know, whereas the B is fragmented. [0:34:04 – 0:34:10] Adam: You know, really four different sections with one main one and three little smaller satellite sections. [0:34:10 – 0:34:14] Erik: Yeah, and even the main one, you know, we did the Heart of the Park trip, and that was two days to get in there. [0:34:14 – 0:34:16] Adam: It’s one main and two satellite, all right? [0:34:16 – 0:34:16] Erik: Yeah. [0:34:17 – 0:34:21] Adam: The Weasel Lake PMA down by the triangle there, it seems like it’s its own little section. [0:34:21 – 0:34:21] Adam: Yeah. [0:34:21 – 0:34:32] Adam: And you got the underbelly, you got the west and the east, and you got those two, like, you got the Vento and then the, you know, the Dick Cheney Memorial. [0:34:32 – 0:34:33] Adam: Yeah. [0:34:34 – 0:34:59] Adam: can’t hook the old yeah the the cheney unit can’t hook western cheney forever let’s not uh you know i don’t want to do the can’t hook dirty like that or cummings but i think it’s all in good fun but i hope it’s not memorialized as like every time i think of cummings now i’m gonna think of dick cheney get you know duked on the face [0:35:00 – 0:35:00] Erik: I don’t know. [0:35:00 – 0:35:02] Adam: Shotgun blast of shit right to the face. [0:35:02 – 0:35:04] Adam: That’s not a bad thought. [0:35:04 – 0:35:09] Adam: For our worst vice president and probably the worst secretary of state we’ve ever seen as a nation. [0:35:09 – 0:35:10] Adam: That’s saying quite a bit. [0:35:10 – 0:35:15] Adam: There’s some real assholes who were secretary of state back during the 1856s. [0:35:15 – 0:35:16] Adam: Oh, sure. [0:35:16 – 0:35:21] Adam: Those guys were really pieces of work, but, you know, you put them up against old this guy. [0:35:22 – 0:35:23] Adam: Yikes. [0:35:23 – 0:35:27] Adam: Anyways, not to get sidetracked too much, but… [0:35:29 – 0:35:30] Adam: We just did, and that’s okay. [0:35:31 – 0:35:34] Adam: Time for another sip of this beautiful Town Hall Brewery. [0:35:34 – 0:35:35] Adam: Sip it up. [0:35:35 – 0:35:36] Adam: I’m going to read wilderness. [0:35:36 – 0:35:37] Adam: H2 black. [0:35:38 – 0:35:38] Adam: I screwed it up. [0:35:38 – 0:35:40] Adam: It’s black H2O. [0:35:40 – 0:35:40] Adam: What’s that even mean? [0:35:41 – 0:35:41] Adam: Black water? [0:35:42 – 0:35:42] Adam: Black water. [0:35:43 – 0:35:43] Adam: Oatmeal stout. [0:35:44 – 0:35:45] Adam: It’s a beautiful thing. [0:35:45 – 0:35:46] Erik: Yeah. [0:35:47 – 0:35:50] Erik: Mildly cooled after being at room temperature. [0:35:50 – 0:35:52] Adam: I think it’s getting colder, though, as the night goes on. [0:35:52 – 0:35:53] Erik: Wilderness coffee. [0:35:54 – 0:35:56] Erik: Don’t know if we’ve ever heard from wilderness coffee. [0:35:57 – 0:35:58] Erik: Oh, first timer. [0:35:59 – 0:36:07] Erik: We got an early August skipper to Long Island and back to Poplar via Liz’s four-day loop. [0:36:08 – 0:36:11] Adam: Oh, yeah, you’re going through the coral and the hungus over there. [0:36:12 – 0:36:19] Erik: Relatively familiar to, excuse me, the trip we did last year. [0:36:19 – 0:36:19] Adam: Mm-hmm. [0:36:21 – 0:36:28] Erik: It’s a skills building trip with my 16 year old and three of his friends to get them ready for a trip of their own in the future. [0:36:28 – 0:36:29] Erik: I love that. [0:36:30 – 0:36:31] Adam: It’s sort of like an internship. [0:36:31 – 0:36:32] Adam: That’s how Trevor got his start. [0:36:33 – 0:36:37] Erik: Yeah, new area for me as I always have done trips at the end of the trail for some reason. [0:36:38 – 0:36:39] Adam: Skill building trip. [0:36:39 – 0:36:40] Adam: I like that term a lot. [0:36:40 – 0:36:42] Adam: I’ve never heard it put that way. [0:36:42 – 0:37:00] Erik: There is something about the opportunity that I was given, and I don’t know if it was conscience, not conscience, but conscientious on my parents’ part to allow me to plan and then actually go on a Boundary Waters trip. [0:37:01 – 0:37:04] Erik: at the age that I did, when I did, but I feel like it was [0:37:06 – 0:37:10] Erik: It was a seminal moment in my teenage years. [0:37:11 – 0:37:22] Erik: And there’s a reason that a lot of the local Midwestern universities and colleges have these freshman trips into the Boundary Waters. [0:37:22 – 0:37:31] Erik: There’s a reason that there are outward bound schools, YMCA camps that are based around the Boundary Waters. [0:37:32 – 0:37:32] Erik: And… [0:37:33 – 0:37:39] Erik: all of the skills that one can take away from putting together serve. [0:37:40 – 0:37:41] Erik: It’s not a survival thing. [0:37:41 – 0:37:43] Erik: Like some of them push it a little bit more than others. [0:37:43 – 0:37:48] Erik: I know outward bound is a little bit more like you do these trips and then you have to spend like a day by yourself. [0:37:49 – 0:38:00] Erik: It’s just the, it’s just a great time for a person of that age to be allowed to take like, [0:38:01 – 0:38:21] Erik: authority over the decisions that they’re making and then can see them come to fruition in ways that not very many other things at that age you can really allow somebody to do you know so you get to plant you want to plan a trip you plan the trip and you can go and do it and if it goes well [0:38:23 – 0:38:26] Erik: you will see the results from that. [0:38:26 – 0:38:32] Erik: Or if things come up, you will have to adjust and plan accordingly. [0:38:32 – 0:38:34] Erik: And like, yeah, deal with the adversity. [0:38:35 – 0:38:41] Erik: And then if things really go like south, then yeah, you’re still dealing with it. [0:38:41 – 0:38:42] Erik: And then it… [0:38:44 – 0:38:46] Erik: for better or worse, can kind of show you what you’re capable of. [0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Erik: It can. [0:38:48 – 0:38:52] Adam: I do like the idea of… Where your planning worked well and where it didn’t. [0:38:52 – 0:38:55] Adam: There’s a lot of good lessons from something like that for a young person. [0:38:55 – 0:38:55] Adam: Yeah. [0:38:55 – 0:38:56] Adam: Project success. [0:38:57 – 0:38:57] Erik: Yeah, for sure. [0:38:57 – 0:38:58] Erik: And I like the idea of… [0:38:59 – 0:39:16] Erik: doing a trip like this with kids of that age or people of that age they’re kind of beyond kids 16 is probably the last year I don’t know everybody’s like kind of a kid to a certain extent to me yeah 20 year olds are kids now but yeah still no more than I knew when I was 20 probably [0:39:17 – 0:39:23] Erik: But yeah, you can give them a little bit of the, hey, this is how it should be done. [0:39:23 – 0:39:24] Erik: Don’t be a Bobby. [0:39:25 – 0:39:28] Erik: And then the next time you get the opportunity. [0:39:28 – 0:39:29] Erik: And sure, there’s going to be that. [0:39:30 – 0:39:34] Erik: Obviously, for myself speaking, it could be different for anybody. [0:39:34 – 0:39:41] Erik: But an 18-year-old who gets the opportunity to go and spend four days in the woods with their peers of that same age. [0:39:41 – 0:39:43] Erik: Yeah, there’s going to be some… [0:39:43 – 0:39:45] Erik: There’s going to be some tomfoolery. [0:39:45 – 0:39:45] Adam: Hijinks? [0:39:46 – 0:39:47] Adam: There might be a hijinks. [0:39:47 – 0:39:48] Adam: There might be a… A prank? [0:39:48 – 0:40:01] Erik: There might be a 1.75 of Captain Morgan’s that’s hopefully not in a glass bottle that cracks and leaks into a tome of Hemingway short stories. [0:40:01 – 0:40:02] Erik: A tome? [0:40:03 – 0:40:06] Erik: You know, that’s – I’ve learned since then. [0:40:06 – 0:40:08] Erik: And you can’t get better unless you do it. [0:40:09 – 0:40:18] Erik: So good luck to all involved in the future trips, obviously, for everybody, but specifically for the – There’s no better way to learn than by doing. [0:40:18 – 0:40:19] Adam: Yeah. [0:40:19 – 0:40:19] Adam: Right? [0:40:19 – 0:40:21] Adam: So that’s the best way to get them in there. [0:40:21 – 0:40:22] Erik: And it’s a pretty good loop. [0:40:22 – 0:40:23] Erik: It’s a pretty fun little loop there. [0:40:23 – 0:40:25] Adam: Yeah, that’s a really good plan. [0:40:25 – 0:40:25] Erik: Yeah. [0:40:29 – 0:40:35] Adam: Next up on the show, great friend of the show, Bob Ross Paddler, three months ago. [0:40:36 – 0:40:37] Adam: Edited three months ago. [0:40:37 – 0:40:38] Adam: What’s that all about? [0:40:40 – 0:40:41] Adam: It’s fine. [0:40:42 – 0:40:46] Adam: Sawbill entry the week before Memorial Day for my first solo. [0:40:47 – 0:40:48] Adam: Probably out there right now. [0:40:48 – 0:40:52] Erik: Doing the Laos River and returning via the lady chain. [0:40:52 – 0:40:52] Erik: All right. [0:40:52 – 0:40:53] Erik: I’m interested. [0:40:53 – 0:40:54] Adam: I’m interested. [0:40:55 – 0:41:03] Adam: Goal A, seclusion, exploration, challenge, safety, and not losing my mind. [0:41:04 – 0:41:06] Adam: Goal B, a northern or two on the line. [0:41:06 – 0:41:07] Adam: There we go. [0:41:07 – 0:41:09] Erik: Holy moly, hot dog goal. [0:41:10 – 0:41:13] Adam: The first recorded occurrence of a sloppy slam. [0:41:14 – 0:41:17] Adam: Oh, this is a whole new fishing category, Eric. [0:41:17 – 0:41:18] Adam: What’s on the sloppy slam? [0:41:18 – 0:41:21] Adam: A rock bass on Zenith, apparently. [0:41:21 – 0:41:23] Adam: Largemouth on Fisher. [0:41:23 – 0:41:24] Adam: You’re going to fish the plain. [0:41:24 – 0:41:28] Adam: Northern and bream on Koma. [0:41:28 – 0:41:28] Adam: Yes. [0:41:29 – 0:41:31] Adam: Koma is so filthy with bream. [0:41:31 – 0:41:34] Adam: I’m a bream weaver. [0:41:35 – 0:41:40] Adam: I believe you can get me through the night. [0:41:40 – 0:41:41] Adam: Thank you for the comment. [0:41:42 – 0:41:43] Adam: It’s a beautiful thing. [0:41:44 – 0:41:51] Adam: I’m going to award you an extra box of wine on Eric’s account. [0:41:51 – 0:41:51] Adam: Nice. [0:41:51 – 0:41:54] Adam: And well-deserved, obviously. [0:41:54 – 0:41:59] Adam: Next up on the show, Paddle Faster, three months ago. [0:41:59 – 0:42:02] Adam: Great friend of the show, Paddle Faster. [0:42:02 – 0:42:03] Adam: Paddle Faster. [0:42:04 – 0:42:06] Adam: I have a scout trip planned for this year. [0:42:06 – 0:42:14] Adam: 10 days starting at the base on Moose and heading up into central Quetico before looping home. [0:42:14 – 0:42:18] Adam: The hope is we accomplish 100 miler in 10 days. [0:42:19 – 0:42:19] Adam: They can do it. [0:42:20 – 0:42:21] Adam: You can do it. [0:42:22 – 0:42:30] Adam: A tumble homie trip does sound fun, sort of like group solos I see posted about occasionally over at bwca.com. [0:42:30 – 0:42:30] Adam: What? [0:42:30 – 0:42:32] Adam: No, we’re not all going in a solo boat. [0:42:32 – 0:42:43] Adam: We’re going 12 tumble homies, one bindle, one satchel, and we’re going to have one 10-person boat. [0:42:43 – 0:42:49] Adam: And if you don’t get on the boxcar, you’re not getting in the boat and vice versa and so forth and so forth and so on. [0:42:50 – 0:42:51] Adam: Everybody had a great time. [0:42:51 – 0:42:53] Erik: A bunch of beige lunatics up in Quantico. [0:42:53 – 0:42:54] Adam: Yeah, exactly. [0:42:54 – 0:42:56] Erik: Avoid central Quantico. [0:42:56 – 0:42:58] Adam: It didn’t give me a timeline for that one. [0:42:59 – 0:42:59] Adam: Oh, yeah. [0:42:59 – 0:43:03] Adam: Strategically left that information out of the post. [0:43:03 – 0:43:04] Adam: All right. [0:43:05 – 0:43:08] Adam: I want to take one more for you there. [0:43:08 – 0:43:11] Adam: These are very short, and they might be haikus, Eric. [0:43:11 – 0:43:12] Adam: I don’t know. [0:43:12 – 0:43:14] Adam: I’m not sure about the pentameter. [0:43:15 – 0:43:20] Adam: Next up on the show, dear friend of the show, Ghost of Ed Abbey. [0:43:20 – 0:43:24] Adam: Three months ago, I’m sensing a pattern here. [0:43:24 – 0:43:27] Adam: There are some comments that are way less than three months ago that I’m seeing. [0:43:29 – 0:43:33] Adam: Ghost of Ed Abbey says, Mudro entry early June. [0:43:33 – 0:43:37] Adam: Plan is to find a site somewhere beyond Fortown. [0:43:37 – 0:43:44] Adam: Also, New Year’s Eve lake trout trip did happen, so you got to jump on the start of 2023. [0:43:44 – 0:43:44] Adam: All right. [0:43:45 – 0:43:45] Adam: Yeah. [0:43:45 – 0:43:48] Adam: You get one New Year’s Eve weekend. [0:43:48 – 0:43:49] Adam: Did happen. [0:43:49 – 0:43:50] Adam: Yeah. [0:43:50 – 0:43:51] Adam: First fish caught in the year. [0:43:51 – 0:43:54] Adam: What do you think the earliest fish caught in the year would be? [0:43:54 – 0:43:56] Erik: Just some midnight New Year’s Eve revelers. [0:43:56 – 0:43:57] Erik: Yeah, anybody out there. [0:43:58 – 0:44:00] Adam: Anybody ever catch a fish at like- 1201? [0:44:01 – 0:44:01] Adam: Exactly. [0:44:01 – 0:44:02] Adam: Yeah. [0:44:03 – 0:44:06] Adam: The ball drops, and then the vexilar starts to hum, and- [0:44:09 – 0:44:13] Erik: You drop the jig with the ball. [0:44:13 – 0:44:13] Adam: There we go. [0:44:13 – 0:44:14] Adam: Oh, yeah. [0:44:15 – 0:44:17] Adam: The Swedish pimple drop at midnight. [0:44:18 – 0:44:20] Adam: I got you all queued up there, sir. [0:44:20 – 0:44:21] Adam: Admiral Gee. [0:44:23 – 0:44:24] Erik: Nothing planned yet. [0:44:24 – 0:44:25] Erik: Well, why are you responding? [0:44:26 – 0:44:26] Erik: Sorry. [0:44:26 – 0:44:32] Erik: Buddy is trying to get me to go on a few portages in from Snowbank. [0:44:33 – 0:44:34] Erik: Not sure if I will get there. [0:44:35 – 0:44:41] Erik: I want to paddle Pine, but the potential for big waves has me a bit anxious. [0:44:41 – 0:44:42] Adam: Yeah, I feel you. [0:44:43 – 0:44:45] Erik: Yeah, you don’t want to mess with Pine. [0:44:46 – 0:44:48] Erik: DirtyDadBot523 says, [0:44:50 – 0:44:58] Erik: Liz swamped for four days in mid-June and sights set on the west side of Winch E. That’s Big Winchell. [0:44:59 – 0:45:02] Erik: Another unofficial trip is in the works with Hopalicious. [0:45:02 – 0:45:02] Erik: Oh, look at this. [0:45:03 – 0:45:06] Erik: We’ve got some collaborations amongst the tumble homies. [0:45:06 – 0:45:07] Adam: They’re already doing it. [0:45:08 – 0:45:08] Adam: Love to see it. [0:45:08 – 0:45:09] Adam: It’s organically happening. [0:45:10 – 0:45:13] Erik: Yes, we are facilitating a culture of trip building. [0:45:13 – 0:45:14] Adam: And trust. [0:45:14 – 0:45:15] Erik: And trust. [0:45:16 – 0:45:16] Erik: You can trust us. [0:45:17 – 0:45:18] Adam: No boxcars involved at all. [0:45:19 – 0:45:20] Adam: Just take a regular car. [0:45:21 – 0:45:22] Adam: Yeah, yeah. [0:45:23 – 0:45:24] Adam: And you can have regular packs. [0:45:24 – 0:45:26] Adam: You don’t need to have the stick and bindle. [0:45:26 – 0:45:27] Adam: That’s fine. [0:45:27 – 0:45:29] Erik: Yeah, just an oval car with a Duluth pack. [0:45:30 – 0:45:31] Erik: with wheels. [0:45:31 – 0:45:36] Erik: Hoping to find some additional tumble homies to join us for a long weekend trip in September. [0:45:37 – 0:45:43] Erik: If you’re interested in joining us, feel free to reach out here or on the discord at tumble homies, friends.com. [0:45:43 – 0:45:43] Adam: Wow. [0:45:43 – 0:45:46] Adam: Yeah, we need those. [0:45:46 – 0:45:47] Adam: They have their own Discord going? [0:45:48 – 0:45:48] Adam: I guess. [0:45:48 – 0:45:49] Adam: Or the Discord. [0:45:49 – 0:45:50] Erik: I don’t know. [0:45:50 – 0:45:51] Adam: I can’t tell from the link. [0:45:51 – 0:45:51] Adam: I’m not on the Discord. [0:45:51 – 0:45:52] Adam: Don’t get Rickrolled. [0:45:52 – 0:45:53] Erik: I don’t understand how it works. [0:45:53 – 0:45:56] Erik: I mean, I know how it works, but I don’t have it on my phone. [0:45:56 – 0:45:58] Erik: And I rarely have a laptop. [0:45:58 – 0:45:59] Adam: I’ll send you the new link. [0:46:00 – 0:46:01] Adam: It refreshes every 24 hours. [0:46:02 – 0:46:02] Adam: Okay. [0:46:04 – 0:46:06] Erik: Oh, sponsor of the show, Acid Diarrhea. [0:46:06 – 0:46:07] Erik: There we go. [0:46:07 – 0:46:07] Erik: 612. [0:46:07 – 0:46:07] Erik: Vince. [0:46:10 – 0:46:12] Erik: I got a pine permit. [0:46:12 – 0:46:12] Erik: Pine. [0:46:12 – 0:46:13] Erik: There it is. [0:46:13 – 0:46:14] Erik: Big pine. [0:46:14 – 0:46:15] Erik: Mid-June. [0:46:15 – 0:46:16] Erik: Going with the kiddos for a few nights. [0:46:17 – 0:46:18] Erik: Oh, wait. [0:46:18 – 0:46:19] Erik: The kiddo. [0:46:19 – 0:46:19] Erik: Sorry. [0:46:19 – 0:46:20] Erik: One kiddo. [0:46:21 – 0:46:22] Erik: Not multiple kiddos. [0:46:22 – 0:46:23] Adam: Yeah, right now. [0:46:23 – 0:46:24] Adam: Don’t get them wet after midnight. [0:46:24 – 0:46:28] Erik: Yeah, we don’t need any kind of a gremlin situation on Pine. [0:46:28 – 0:46:30] Erik: It’s too close. [0:46:30 – 0:46:35] Adam: That’s how bobbies really get farmed is you get them wet after midnight and they just multiply and start hacking. [0:46:37 – 0:46:38] Adam: All right. [0:46:38 – 0:46:43] Adam: We got to get Zemeckis in on this and remake gremlins, but for camping. [0:46:44 – 0:46:44] Erik: Yeah. [0:46:45 – 0:46:46] Erik: All right. [0:46:47 – 0:46:48] Erik: The tables are turning. [0:46:49 – 0:46:49] Adam: We’re chugging. [0:46:49 – 0:46:50] Adam: We’re doing it. [0:46:50 – 0:46:51] Adam: It’s happening. [0:46:51 – 0:46:52] Adam: Where’s the cursor? [0:46:52 – 0:46:52] Adam: I see it. [0:46:52 – 0:46:53] Adam: We’re making it. [0:46:53 – 0:46:53] Adam: Brass band. [0:46:53 – 0:46:56] Adam: Next up on the show, Ropite34, first time caller. [0:46:56 – 0:46:59] Erik: We are entering entry point 47, Liz via Poplar on… [0:47:17 – 0:47:18] Adam: May 21st. [0:47:18 – 0:47:19] Adam: They’re out there. [0:47:19 – 0:47:19] Adam: Tomorrow. [0:47:19 – 0:47:20] Adam: They’re out there tomorrow. [0:47:20 – 0:47:21] Erik: They’re going in tomorrow. [0:47:21 – 0:47:22] Adam: Oh, my God. [0:47:22 – 0:47:23] Adam: Where are you? [0:47:23 – 0:47:25] Erik: They’re probably out there right now. [0:47:25 – 0:47:27] Adam: They’re going to probably tell us the plan here. [0:47:27 – 0:47:28] Adam: I should just keep reading. [0:47:28 – 0:47:28] Adam: Hello? [0:47:28 – 0:47:29] Adam: I’m here. [0:47:29 – 0:47:30] Adam: Rapite? [0:47:31 – 0:47:31] Erik: Rapite. [0:47:31 – 0:47:32] Erik: Rapite. [0:47:34 – 0:47:41] Adam: We’re planning on camping on Gaskin for two nights, Winchell for two nights, and then on up to Long Island for two nights. [0:47:41 – 0:47:42] Adam: This is a good plan. [0:47:42 – 0:47:43] Adam: Very solid foundation. [0:47:44 – 0:47:52] Adam: We will be existing entry point 50 on Memorial Weekend. [0:47:52 – 0:47:55] Adam: We will be fishing and looking for things to explore. [0:47:56 – 0:48:00] Adam: If you have any suggestions for that area, it would be much appreciated. [0:48:00 – 0:48:03] Adam: All right, you’re going to want to get your Garmin inReach device out. [0:48:03 – 0:48:05] Adam: Thank you for the comment, by the way. [0:48:05 – 0:48:07] Adam: That was worth five boxes of Franzia. [0:48:08 – 0:48:09] Adam: Download the Tumble Home radio app. [0:48:09 – 0:48:14] Adam: We’ll text you ideas for adventure in that region right now. [0:48:14 – 0:48:16] Erik: Direct contact with us. [0:48:16 – 0:48:18] Erik: It’s only a $99 a month subscription. [0:48:18 – 0:48:20] Adam: It’s like a digital stick and bindle. [0:48:21 – 0:48:24] Adam: It’s like a digital bent shaft paddle right in your pocket. [0:48:24 – 0:48:25] Adam: Digi bindle. [0:48:25 – 0:48:26] Adam: There you go. [0:48:27 – 0:48:31] Adam: What would you do in Gaskin, Winchell, and Long Island? [0:48:31 – 0:48:36] Adam: Definitely going to want to hang out on… Checks the notes. [0:48:37 – 0:48:38] Erik: Checks the notes. [0:48:39 – 0:48:40] Adam: Oh, Kiskadena, yeah. [0:48:40 – 0:48:44] Adam: You’re going to want to just really enjoy the hell out of Kiskadena in there. [0:48:44 – 0:48:47] Adam: Make sure you give yourself plenty of time. [0:48:47 – 0:49:04] Erik: It’s kind of one of those areas where it’s not like the Vento unit we always talk about has so many things to see and do outside of just getting up in the morning, packing up camp and paddling to another camp, maybe fishing along the way, going out at night and fishing. [0:49:04 – 0:49:07] Erik: Not that there’s anything wrong with doing any of that, but… [0:49:08 – 0:49:09] Erik: You’ve got the Border Rock Trail. [0:49:09 – 0:49:10] Erik: You’ve got falls. [0:49:10 – 0:49:13] Erik: You’ve got things like destinations. [0:49:14 – 0:49:21] Erik: And the loop in that area, like the Liz Winchell entry, like even over to Long Island, you know, it’s… [0:49:22 – 0:49:24] Erik: There’s no trails. [0:49:24 – 0:49:26] Erik: There’s not even really a ton of… [0:49:28 – 0:49:55] Adam: like you can there’s a couple of little waterfalls that come out and a couple of little like overlooks on winchell but they’re not like on the map you kind of just have to find your way so would you recommend they go to davis though on this one i can think you can do it because it seems like a pretty conservative i know you want to do two nights on winchell and two nights on gaskin here’s what i would do one night on gaskin two nights on winchell one night on davis and then two nights on long island [0:49:56 – 0:50:00] Adam: I would take one of the Gaskin nights out because you don’t want to sit still that early in the trip. [0:50:00 – 0:50:02] Adam: You’re going to get down to Winchell anyways. [0:50:02 – 0:50:03] Adam: Unless you’re fishing. [0:50:03 – 0:50:07] Adam: And then you can kind of take the longer route up to Long Island and hit up Davis. [0:50:08 – 0:50:09] Erik: Do what we couldn’t. [0:50:10 – 0:50:10] Erik: Gaskin. [0:50:10 – 0:50:11] Adam: Stay on Davis. [0:50:12 – 0:50:13] Erik: Gaskin’s good fishing. [0:50:14 – 0:50:16] Adam: You can’t really go wrong, though. [0:50:16 – 0:50:17] Adam: That’s the problem with that whole route. [0:50:17 – 0:50:19] Adam: It’s a beauty the whole way. [0:50:19 – 0:50:21] Adam: No matter what you do, it’s going to be amazing. [0:50:21 – 0:50:28] Erik: It seems like to me, if I were going to do that, and this is just also the way that I think it probably is. [0:50:28 – 0:50:36] Erik: Stands to reason that you feel the same way as we rather get up and move, even if it’s not far. [0:50:37 – 0:50:37] Erik: Yeah. [0:50:38 – 0:50:45] Erik: At least get up and kind of just get to another lake to cover a little bit more ground, especially if you’ve never been in that area. [0:50:47 – 0:50:53] Erik: But if you want to do a layover day and fish, then Gaspin’s a great spot to do it. [0:50:53 – 0:50:59] Erik: And Winchell’s not the worst, but it is just pike and trout, so you’re kind of… Just pike and trout. [0:51:00 – 0:51:01] Erik: Not just, but you know what I mean. [0:51:01 – 0:51:02] Erik: It’s a different kind of fishing. [0:51:02 – 0:51:04] Erik: It’s not just like, oh, we can just sit here. [0:51:04 – 0:51:05] Erik: It’s trophy pike and trout. [0:51:05 – 0:51:05] Erik: Yeah, big fish. [0:51:05 – 0:51:06] Erik: You’re not getting action. [0:51:06 – 0:51:09] Adam: If you get one, you win, but you may not get one. [0:51:09 – 0:51:09] Erik: You might not. [0:51:09 – 0:51:11] Erik: You probably won’t get one, but if you do, my gosh. [0:51:11 – 0:51:15] Erik: I’ve been stuck on Winchell just as many times as I’ve caught a 40-inch trout. [0:51:16 – 0:51:37] Adam: fish on that chunkers coming up to the boat next up on the show tasty chevelle new friend new friend entering at moose entry point 25 before memorial day and i’m hoping to make some big pokes and loops towards seagull and back all right pokes and loops it’s a big ass loop there [0:51:38 – 0:51:39] Adam: It’s hard to say pokes and loops. [0:51:39 – 0:51:43] Adam: You want to say like pooks and loops or pokes and lopes. [0:51:43 – 0:51:44] Adam: Pokes and lopes. [0:51:44 – 0:51:45] Adam: But I pulled it off. [0:51:45 – 0:51:46] Adam: Thanks for the comment. [0:51:46 – 0:51:49] Adam: That was worth five boxes of wine, and you burned them. [0:51:49 – 0:51:50] Adam: Enjoy that trip. [0:51:51 – 0:51:55] Adam: And next up, it’s before Memorial Day, so who knows. [0:51:55 – 0:51:56] Adam: Could be happening right now. [0:51:57 – 0:51:59] Adam: He could be out there poking and looping. [0:51:59 – 0:52:00] Adam: Tasty Chevelle. [0:52:01 – 0:52:02] Adam: Check back in. [0:52:02 – 0:52:03] Adam: Tell us how it went. [0:52:04 – 0:52:11] Adam: Next up on the show, greatest friend of the show, it’s Hopalicious, and the OP on this thread from three months ago. [0:52:11 – 0:52:14] Adam: Hello, thank you for the thread. [0:52:14 – 0:52:15] Adam: This is worth six boxes of wine. [0:52:15 – 0:52:17] Adam: I’ll go ahead and award an extra box of wine. [0:52:18 – 0:52:20] Adam: Karma, karma, karma. [0:52:20 – 0:52:31] Adam: I got a June 12th Entry Point 25 permit, planning to tow up Moose and head to Knife, South Arm of Knife, and obviously stop at Thunder Point for a… [0:52:37 – 0:52:42] Adam: And possibly a trip off to Eddie Falls, fingers crossed, for the old Grand Slammo. [0:52:42 – 0:52:42] Adam: I love it. [0:52:43 – 0:52:43] Erik: Rip Tipper. [0:52:44 – 0:52:44] Adam: Oh, yeah. [0:52:44 – 0:52:47] Adam: There are also some plans coming together for a September Tumble Homey trip. [0:52:48 – 0:52:49] Adam: More to come on that. [0:52:49 – 0:52:52] Adam: Wow, it’s exciting times. [0:52:53 – 0:52:56] Adam: And I don’t know, Eric, how are you feeling on the time right now? [0:52:57 – 0:53:03] Adam: I’ve scrolled her up for you there, but we may be coming to the time where it’s time to go stargazing. [0:53:05 – 0:53:12] Erik: Yeah, we can definitely read a few more here, but I for sure need to take a little… [0:53:12 – 0:53:17] Adam: This beer is 14 pounds of stout, and I’m damn near finished with it. [0:53:19 – 0:53:23] Adam: I’ve done good work here, and frankly, I’m starting to feel it. [0:53:25 – 0:53:48] Adam: it looks like i’ve also commented on this thread so we may want to be careful as so as to not send the laptop spiraling through a vortex into an alternate dimension yeah we’re just gonna skip you i think don’t read that comment out loud or it will send the shed into a tumult it does bring me back to the days because i see some comments uh below it remember printed reddit [0:53:49 – 0:53:50] Adam: Yeah, I love printed Reddit. [0:53:50 – 0:53:50] Adam: Printed Reddit. [0:53:51 – 0:53:52] Adam: Everybody loves printed Reddit. [0:53:53 – 0:53:54] Adam: We should do a printed Reddit rehash. [0:53:54 – 0:54:00] Adam: It’s like the thing with the little packs where you’re telling me about the snacks. [0:54:01 – 0:54:02] Erik: Oh, the old snack packs. [0:54:03 – 0:54:06] Adam: Yeah, it makes me feel that way, like Lick’em Sticks and Fun Dips. [0:54:07 – 0:54:09] Adam: And then you were talking about the… [0:54:10 – 0:54:13] Erik: The little cheesy… Well, yeah, that was the conversation I was having. [0:54:13 – 0:54:18] Erik: It was like, everybody gets all hot and bothered over the nostalgia of the Dunkaroos. [0:54:18 – 0:54:19] Adam: Dunkaroos are shit. [0:54:19 – 0:54:24] Erik: You don’t go a day without seeing an Our Nostalgia post about Dunkaroos. [0:54:24 – 0:54:27] Erik: I was like, there’s no love for the old… [0:54:27 – 0:54:28] Erik: I don’t even remember who made them. [0:54:29 – 0:54:33] Adam: I don’t either, but once you said it, I was like, man, I haven’t thought about those things in a long time. [0:54:33 – 0:54:34] Adam: Neither have I. [0:54:34 – 0:54:36] Adam: There was two different varieties. [0:54:36 – 0:54:39] Erik: There was the cheese bin, the little cheese dipper bin. [0:54:39 – 0:54:59] Erik: yeah and one side was mini breadsticks for dipping they would inevitably break off at the tip it was like yeah cheese would like dig them out it was like easy cheese but like in a tub yeah a little mini tub and then there was the other variety it would always break they would always break they were designed to break yeah actually it was part of there’s a feature not a bug [0:55:00 – 0:55:17] Erik: But then my theory is on the Texas sized plastic pollution that’s floating out in the Pacific is probably mostly the little red long rectangular sticks that came with the cracker variety. [0:55:17 – 0:55:17] Erik: Yeah. [0:55:18 – 0:55:22] Erik: where it would be like six crackers in a little tray next to a tub of cheese. [0:55:23 – 0:55:24] Adam: Those are so much better. [0:55:24 – 0:55:27] Adam: You could spread the cheese product on. [0:55:27 – 0:55:30] Erik: Yeah, you could be your own master, and you could choose. [0:55:31 – 0:55:34] Erik: Maybe this cracker is going to be a nice – you start out nice and thin. [0:55:35 – 0:55:36] Adam: It’s a skills-building snack. [0:55:36 – 0:55:44] Erik: Yeah, but inevitably you would get to the end of either your little mini breadsticks or your little cracker. [0:55:45 – 0:55:50] Erik: And there would always be a little bit more cheese in that little tub. [0:55:50 – 0:55:51] Erik: And you’d get in there dirty with it. [0:55:51 – 0:55:53] Adam: You would have to get in there dirty to get the rest of that cheese. [0:55:53 – 0:55:55] Adam: You’re not leaving that cheese behind. [0:55:55 – 0:55:56] Adam: You’d get dirty with the tub. [0:55:56 – 0:55:56] Adam: Cheese product. [0:55:57 – 0:55:58] Adam: Yeah. [0:55:59 – 0:56:04] Erik: There were some skills learned that the boys didn’t know that they had at the time that would be used in the future. [0:56:05 – 0:56:06] Adam: I know exactly what you’re talking about. [0:56:06 – 0:56:09] Adam: Digging out that cheese from the corners of those little cheese bins. [0:56:09 – 0:56:11] Erik: But it was all waste. [0:56:11 – 0:56:11] Erik: Everything. [0:56:12 – 0:56:13] Erik: I’m like, why don’t you see those things anymore? [0:56:13 – 0:56:13] Erik: All plastic. [0:56:14 – 0:56:16] Erik: It’s like, what’s probably a good thing we don’t see those things anymore? [0:56:16 – 0:56:18] Erik: Because it was like… Was that like number nine plastic? [0:56:18 – 0:56:22] Erik: Yeah, it was like step one, tear off a sheath of plastic. [0:56:22 – 0:56:25] Erik: Step two, eat the crap inside. [0:56:25 – 0:56:28] Erik: And then step three, throw away four more pieces of plastic. [0:56:29 – 0:56:30] Adam: And this plastic stick. [0:56:30 – 0:56:33] Adam: Also, the cheese and the crackers were also plastic. [0:56:33 – 0:56:34] Adam: Number nine plastic. [0:56:34 – 0:56:34] Erik: Yeah. [0:56:34 – 0:56:35] Erik: It’s the worst. [0:56:35 – 0:56:37] Erik: And then step five, poop out plastic. [0:56:38 – 0:56:39] Adam: Yeah. [0:56:39 – 0:56:40] Erik: Because that’s basically all you just ate. [0:56:40 – 0:56:41] Erik: And they say I’m crazy. [0:56:42 – 0:56:42] Erik: Yeah. [0:56:42 – 0:56:42] Erik: Hark! [0:56:42 – 0:56:43] Erik: Hark! [0:56:45 – 0:56:46] Erik: Was it Kraft? [0:56:46 – 0:56:47] Erik: I don’t even know. [0:56:47 – 0:56:48] Erik: It wasn’t Kraft. [0:56:48 – 0:56:51] Adam: I’m going to have to try and Google on this thing right now. [0:56:51 – 0:57:00] Erik: There’s probably some old school cheese and cracker packs from the 90s that are still on eBay that you could maybe find. [0:57:01 – 0:57:02] Erik: No expiration date. [0:57:04 – 0:57:06] Erik: But if I had the opportunity, I would… [0:57:08 – 0:57:15] Erik: I might just take a little tiny drill and drill a hole into one of those little red plastic sticks and wear it as a necklace. [0:57:16 – 0:57:20] Erik: Just as a symbol to American ingenuity. [0:57:23 – 0:57:23] Erik: LN. [0:57:24 – 0:57:25] Erik: Wait. [0:57:26 – 0:57:26] Erik: LV. [0:57:27 – 0:57:28] Erik: NV. [0:57:28 – 0:57:29] Erik: 1212. [0:57:31 – 0:57:34] Erik: Going to try Voyager’s National Park this year. [0:57:35 – 0:57:36] Erik: Hey. [0:57:36 – 0:57:36] Erik: Yeah. [0:57:37 – 0:57:38] Erik: Have campsites reserved. [0:57:38 – 0:57:40] Erik: Wow, what a concept. [0:57:40 – 0:57:42] Erik: Handysnacks. [0:57:42 – 0:57:43] Erik: Handysnacks. [0:57:43 – 0:57:44] Erik: I’m sorry to interrupt you. [0:57:45 – 0:57:48] Adam: I know I never do that on the show, but this was an urgent matter. [0:57:48 – 0:57:49] Erik: I had to interrupt you. [0:57:50 – 0:57:50] Erik: Handysnacks. [0:57:51 – 0:57:51] Erik: Oh, yeah. [0:57:52 – 0:57:52] Erik: Yeah. [0:58:24 – 0:58:25] Erik: That’s what I want. [0:58:25 – 0:58:27] Adam: I want to buy some fruit by the foot. [0:58:27 – 0:58:29] Erik: I want some fucking zebra cakes in my life. [0:58:29 – 0:58:31] Erik: Yeah, what’s up? [0:58:32 – 0:58:34] Erik: Some expired handy packs. [0:58:35 – 0:58:38] Adam: You can bring some handy snacks and some jolt on this next trip. [0:58:39 – 0:58:40] Erik: Some jolt. [0:58:40 – 0:58:42] Erik: Do you remember OK Soda? [0:58:42 – 0:58:43] Erik: No. [0:58:43 – 0:58:43] Erik: Wow. [0:58:44 – 0:58:46] Erik: It was like the labels were black and white. [0:58:46 – 0:58:47] Adam: Oh, this is like Dharma Soda. [0:58:48 – 0:58:53] Erik: Yeah, it was just like a picture of like a random black and white picture. [0:58:53 – 0:58:55] Erik: And it was literally just called OK Soda. [0:58:55 – 0:58:57] Erik: And I don’t even know what it tasted like. [0:58:57 – 0:58:59] Erik: It was like a mix between like Coke and root beer. [0:59:00 – 0:59:01] Erik: Oh, is that Dr. Pepper? [0:59:02 – 0:59:06] Erik: Well, Dr. Pepper has 23 secret spices. [0:59:06 – 0:59:06] Erik: Dr. Thunder. [0:59:07 – 0:59:09] Adam: Actually, my favorite is… Dr. Thunder. [0:59:09 – 0:59:10] Adam: Yeah. [0:59:11 – 0:59:12] Adam: Yeah, Dr. Thunder. [0:59:12 – 0:59:13] Adam: I don’t know about that. [0:59:13 – 0:59:14] Adam: Need a break? [0:59:14 – 0:59:15] Adam: Yeah, we got to have a break. [0:59:15 – 0:59:17] Adam: I can’t continue on. [0:59:17 – 0:59:20] Erik: Well, LVNV1212, we teased your comment. [0:59:20 – 0:59:23] Erik: You’re just going to have to… We can still do it. [0:59:23 – 0:59:23] Erik: Just hit pause. [0:59:23 – 0:59:24] Erik: Just wait a little bit longer. [0:59:24 – 0:59:26] Erik: We’ve got to go outside. [0:59:27 – 0:59:37] Erik: We are seconds away from winning this eBay bid on a lot of 100 handy snacks. [0:59:37 – 0:59:39] Erik: And we are prioritizing that right now. [0:59:39 – 0:59:39] Erik: I’m sorry. [0:59:39 – 0:59:44] Erik: LVNV1 to Las Vegas, Nevada. [0:59:45 – 0:59:46] Erik: 1212 is my best guess. [0:59:52 – 0:59:55] Erik: Going to try Voyagers National Park this year. [0:59:55 – 1:00:02] Erik: Have campsites reserved on Lake Cabotogama with a dock and boat. [1:00:03 – 1:00:03] Erik: We’ll see. [1:00:04 – 1:00:08] Erik: Lake Cab was our family vacation spot in the early 60s. [1:00:10 – 1:00:10] Erik: Yep. [1:00:11 – 1:00:11] Adam: I’m that old. [1:00:13 – 1:00:13] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [1:00:14 – 1:00:15] Erik: I’ve never been to Voyagers. [1:00:16 – 1:00:20] Erik: I don’t have anything to say on it, but I think at some point I should probably check it out. [1:00:20 – 1:00:22] Adam: Big water, you want a motor for those. [1:00:22 – 1:00:27] Erik: Yeah, no, I would feel exposed in a canoe, I feel. [1:00:27 – 1:00:34] Adam: Yeah, I mean, I feel like when you and I are in a min-2, we’re probably pushing like a 25 horse in there, no problem. [1:00:34 – 1:00:35] Erik: Basically a motorboat. [1:00:35 – 1:00:40] Adam: You’re going to want a 90 horse to 110 horse minimum if you want to go up the Voyager. [1:00:40 – 1:00:40] Erik: Yeah. [1:00:41 – 1:00:44] Adam: Even if you’re just in a regular boat that doesn’t even have a water slide. [1:00:45 – 1:00:46] Erik: They all come with water slides, though, don’t they? [1:00:46 – 1:00:47] Erik: I think they all have to now. [1:00:47 – 1:00:48] Adam: They must. [1:00:48 – 1:00:48] Adam: State law. [1:00:49 – 1:00:50] Erik: State law. [1:00:50 – 1:00:51] Adam: Thanks a lot, DFL. [1:00:51 – 1:00:51] Adam: Yeah. [1:00:52 – 1:00:54] Adam: We all need water slides. [1:00:54 – 1:00:54] Erik: Yeah. [1:00:54 – 1:01:04] Erik: I mean, you give the state of Minnesota the majority vote on the left throughout the Senate and the House, and you’re going to get water slides on all your boats. [1:01:04 – 1:01:06] Adam: Levitating at all times. [1:01:06 – 1:01:06] Adam: Yeah. [1:01:06 – 1:01:06] Adam: Yeah. [1:01:08 – 1:01:09] Erik: We’re living in a society. [1:01:09 – 1:01:11] Erik: J underscore dat. [1:01:12 – 1:01:12] Erik: End of May. [1:01:13 – 1:01:15] Erik: Two-night fishing trip on Ram. [1:01:15 – 1:01:16] Erik: That’s a good spot. [1:01:16 – 1:01:17] Erik: Just a little pop-in. [1:01:18 – 1:01:18] Adam: Great pop-in. [1:01:19 – 1:01:22] Adam: Don’t need to get into too much of a… [1:01:22 – 1:01:23] Adam: I don’t need to portage. [1:01:23 – 1:01:25] Adam: I don’t need to get a big route on hand. [1:01:25 – 1:01:29] Erik: I don’t need to facilitate and figure out routing, pickups, drop-offs. [1:01:29 – 1:01:31] Erik: Just want to go chill up on Ram for a couple of days. [1:01:31 – 1:01:32] Adam: It’s a destination. [1:01:33 – 1:01:35] Erik: Heck yeah, especially that time of year. [1:01:35 – 1:01:47] Erik: End of May, you might be out there right now, who knows, but I can’t imagine that the lake and rainbow trout fishing on that lake gets much better than it does this time of year. [1:01:48 – 1:01:55] Erik: Early June on Missing Link, hoping for a frost river loop if the water cooperates, and early August, skipper assault. [1:01:55 – 1:01:56] Adam: Skipper! [1:01:57 – 1:01:58] Erik: On Long Island and Big Winchy. [1:01:59 – 1:02:02] Erik: Man, Big Winchy is always getting the love. [1:02:02 – 1:02:03] Adam: Who’s talking this place up? [1:02:04 – 1:02:08] Erik: Yeah, we had a lot of knife talk last week, but Big Winchy. [1:02:08 – 1:02:09] Adam: I think we were talking about it last time, though. [1:02:09 – 1:02:14] Adam: It’s just beyond the realm where it doesn’t matter how much you talk it up, there’s always going to be plenty of room out there. [1:02:15 – 1:02:15] Erik: Big winchy? [1:02:16 – 1:02:16] Adam: Yeah. [1:02:16 – 1:02:16] Adam: Oh, yeah. [1:02:17 – 1:02:18] Adam: You’ve never seen it packed. [1:02:18 – 1:02:24] Erik: I don’t think we’re affecting any kind of numbers, noticeable numbers on big winchy, I don’t think. [1:02:24 – 1:02:25] Erik: I don’t know. [1:02:26 – 1:02:28] Erik: We’ve always had the whole lake to ourselves. [1:02:28 – 1:02:28] Adam: Always. [1:02:29 – 1:02:29] Adam: Yeah. [1:02:31 – 1:02:32] Erik: The White Pine. [1:02:33 – 1:02:36] Erik: I have a five-day solo trip planned for May. [1:02:37 – 1:02:38] Erik: I will be entering in through Liz. [1:02:39 – 1:02:41] Erik: The plan is to go to Big Winchy. [1:02:41 – 1:02:41] Erik: No. [1:02:42 – 1:02:43] Erik: And do a little fishing. [1:02:43 – 1:02:44] Erik: Maybe, yeah, maybe we’re wrong. [1:02:44 – 1:02:48] Erik: Everybody’s going to be out there just like, Jesus, I can’t find a damn site on this lake. [1:02:49 – 1:03:17] Erik: everybody’s out here chi-hooing and yeah swimming in their jean shorts oh it’s got tumble home jean shorts swimming on winchy that’s the way to do it probably end up making my way through davis connoisseurs loop all right now now we’re talking to long island then exiting through skipper these are all new lakes for me so i am excited to color them in on my map yeah it’s a good feeling the best [1:03:18 – 1:03:19] Erik: That is a good feeling. [1:03:21 – 1:03:23] Erik: I think we can probably do a couple more here. [1:03:23 – 1:03:24] Erik: Come on. [1:03:24 – 1:03:26] Erik: We’re just a little over an hour. [1:03:27 – 1:03:31] Erik: We got to start moving on. [1:03:33 – 1:03:36] Erik: The trip season, some of these are already happening. [1:03:36 – 1:03:36] Erik: That’s true. [1:03:36 – 1:03:37] Erik: Some of them have happened. [1:03:37 – 1:03:38] Erik: That’s true. [1:03:38 – 1:03:40] Erik: I see a lot of winchies still. [1:03:40 – 1:03:46] Adam: Anybody still out there listening, though, to this episode, we’re probably not going to finish this thread, so get in there. [1:03:46 – 1:03:49] Adam: Anything that’s listed as less than three months old, we will read next week. [1:03:50 – 1:03:52] Adam: Next up on the show, great friend. [1:03:52 – 1:03:55] Erik: Lots of mudro, too, for whatever reason this year. [1:03:55 – 1:03:55] Adam: Yeah, a lot of mudro. [1:03:58 – 1:03:58] Adam: Oh, my. [1:03:59 – 1:03:59] Adam: Oh. [1:04:00 – 1:04:08] Adam: Next up on the show, great friend of the show, Frayed Knot, three months ago, headed to Wine and Dent out of Sawbill in mid-May. [1:04:09 – 1:04:11] Adam: The group of six. [1:04:11 – 1:04:14] Erik: Probably going to be packed with antlers, moose sheds up there. [1:04:14 – 1:04:15] Adam: Take it easy on the sheds. [1:04:17 – 1:04:24] Adam: Then at the end of July, the wife and I will be celebrating our 10th anniversary on a trip out of Missing Link. [1:04:24 – 1:04:25] Adam: Congratulations. [1:04:26 – 1:04:30] Adam: That’s the 10th anniversary gift actually is a boundary waters permit. [1:04:30 – 1:04:30] Adam: Yeah. [1:04:31 – 1:04:34] Adam: That’s the, that’s the 10 year anniversary is a trip. [1:04:34 – 1:04:35] Adam: I think. [1:04:36 – 1:04:43] Erik: Yeah, it’s like paper, wood, leather, copper, nickel, and then boundary waters. [1:04:43 – 1:04:45] Adam: BWCA trip. [1:04:45 – 1:04:48] Erik: There’s a few in between there, like rubber and a hat. [1:04:49 – 1:04:49] Erik: Hat. [1:04:49 – 1:04:51] Erik: Yeah, it’s a hat anniversary. [1:04:52 – 1:04:54] Adam: I can’t believe you got me a tiny sombrero. [1:04:54 – 1:04:55] Adam: This marriage is over. [1:04:58 – 1:05:03] Adam: What would you do if you personally were given a tiny sombrero for your 10th wedding anniversary? [1:05:04 – 1:05:05] Adam: I mean, I think I would be thrilled. [1:05:05 – 1:05:06] Adam: Apropos of nothing? [1:05:07 – 1:05:09] Erik: It would be pretty funny. [1:05:09 – 1:05:13] Adam: But like 10 years and all I got was a tiny sombrero. [1:05:14 – 1:05:15] Adam: And then if it came with a shirt that said that? [1:05:16 – 1:05:16] Adam: Yeah. [1:05:17 – 1:05:18] Adam: 10 years of marriage. [1:05:18 – 1:05:19] Adam: You can’t really be mad then. [1:05:19 – 1:05:20] Adam: Yeah, that’d be funny. [1:05:21 – 1:05:21] Erik: That’d be good. [1:05:21 – 1:05:22] Erik: That’d be fine. [1:05:22 – 1:05:23] Erik: I would love that marriage. [1:05:23 – 1:05:24] Erik: I want that marriage. [1:05:25 – 1:05:25] Adam: Actually, yeah. [1:05:25 – 1:05:29] Adam: I think we could all do… We all could strive for that kind of marriage. [1:05:30 – 1:05:31] Erik: We could all do better. [1:05:32 – 1:05:33] Erik: For that kind of a marriage, yeah. [1:05:33 – 1:05:34] Erik: That kind of marriage. [1:05:34 – 1:05:35] Erik: You’re so wacky. [1:05:35 – 1:05:36] Erik: You never know what you’re going to get. [1:05:36 – 1:05:38] Erik: They’re probably going to wear pretty thin after a while, though. [1:05:38 – 1:05:41] Erik: It has to be like a once every 10 years you can do something. [1:05:41 – 1:06:09] Adam: something yeah you gotta you gotta time those kinds of jokes yeah you can’t just be constantly being a goofball about yeah you gotta have some serious gifts in there but jesus another tiny tiny little vest that only fits a spider monkey okay i’ve only ever overnighted on shoulder season so it’ll be good to experience the park in summer a little worried about the bugs though you know there’s no point in worrying about the bugs they’re gonna do what they’re gonna do worry all you want they’re still gonna be bugs [1:06:09 – 1:06:10] Adam: They are. [1:06:11 – 1:06:13] Adam: Take a lesson from Derzu or Zala. [1:06:13 – 1:06:17] Adam: It’s not going to ruin your trip. [1:06:17 – 1:06:18] Adam: It’s not going to make it either. [1:06:18 – 1:06:19] Adam: The bugs aren’t even there. [1:06:19 – 1:06:22] Adam: They’re just a figment of your imagination. [1:06:23 – 1:06:31] Adam: Next up on the show, a great friend of the show, a true dear friend of Tumble Home, Blueberry Bannock. [1:06:32 – 1:06:33] Adam: Wait, is this a new Bannock? [1:06:33 – 1:06:34] Adam: Hold on. [1:06:34 – 1:06:36] Adam: I don’t know if this is a true friend of the show. [1:06:36 – 1:06:37] Adam: I thought it was Barb’s Bannock. [1:06:37 – 1:06:39] Adam: Who the hell is Blueberry Bannock? [1:06:40 – 1:06:40] Adam: Hey. [1:06:42 – 1:06:44] Adam: I’m looking sideways at the laptop right now. [1:06:44 – 1:06:45] Adam: Squinting the eyes. [1:06:45 – 1:06:47] Adam: I don’t know about this, Bannock. [1:06:47 – 1:06:49] Adam: I don’t know who this is. [1:06:49 – 1:06:50] Adam: Maybe it’s a friend of the show. [1:06:51 – 1:06:54] Adam: Next up on the show, three, two, one. [1:06:54 – 1:07:00] Adam: Next up on the show, probable friend of the show, Blueberry Bannock three months ago. [1:07:01 – 1:07:08] Adam: Winchell is my… Winchell is next on my bucket list, but I haven’t grabbed a permit yet. [1:07:09 – 1:07:13] Adam: I’m leaning towards Horseshoe Gaskin, but what’s everyone’s favorite route in? [1:07:13 – 1:07:14] Adam: That’s it. [1:07:15 – 1:07:15] Adam: Horseshoe. [1:07:15 – 1:07:16] Adam: Yeah, go through Horseshoe. [1:07:16 – 1:07:17] Erik: Yeah, the easiest in… [1:07:18 – 1:07:20] Erik: I don’t even know if it’s the easiest, but I would say… Go through Brule. [1:07:21 – 1:07:30] Erik: The most popular route is in through your Liz Swamp kind of potentially meads you can get down in there. [1:07:30 – 1:07:35] Erik: But I think it’s just if you’re willing to roll the dice on the… [1:07:36 – 1:07:46] Erik: This maw that is Brule, especially this time of year, you can easily get up into Winchie from Brule, go up through the cones, go up and through grassy. [1:07:46 – 1:07:49] Adam: This person’s saying Bananadad to Long Island’s the best way in. [1:07:49 – 1:07:50] Adam: I don’t know about that. [1:07:50 – 1:07:51] Adam: That’s a hell of a way in. [1:07:51 – 1:07:52] Erik: That’s a way. [1:07:52 – 1:07:54] Erik: Totally a way in, but that’s, you know. [1:07:54 – 1:07:55] Adam: Done all now. [1:07:56 – 1:08:04] Erik: From Bananadad to Long Island, we’ve talked at length at multiple different times about the Quetico-ness of that stretch of Boundary Waters Lakes. [1:08:04 – 1:08:05] Erik: You’ve got your Ross. [1:08:05 – 1:08:06] Erik: You’ve got your Cave. [1:08:07 – 1:08:33] Erik: what else is in there sabica it’s it’s a rugged rugged stretch of lakes portages that don’t get used full waste deep mud i’ve seen it i’ve been in it yeah you might turn into a snapping turtle yeah in which uh if you don’t have the claws and the turtle and the shell yeah if you’re not willing to let the reptilian in you come out just a little bit you’re gonna struggle you will there you gotta you gotta thrash you gotta dig [1:08:35 – 1:08:39] Adam: Next up on the show, Bunyan Boy, first-time caller. [1:08:40 – 1:08:41] Adam: Paul’s son. [1:08:42 – 1:08:42] Adam: Welcome. [1:08:44 – 1:08:46] Adam: Welcome to the show, Bunyan Boy. [1:08:46 – 1:08:47] Adam: Three months ago. [1:08:47 – 1:08:49] Erik: Or just somebody with a foot problem. [1:08:49 – 1:08:50] Adam: Four boxes of wine. [1:08:50 – 1:08:56] Adam: Headed through Mudro up to Thunder and Bear Trap in early June. [1:08:56 – 1:08:59] Adam: Would definitely appreciate any connoisseur’s tips about the area. [1:09:01 – 1:09:05] Adam: Hoping to find some cool spots to check out and some walleye. [1:09:05 – 1:09:06] Adam: Wink, wink. [1:09:07 – 1:09:10] Adam: Well, we’ve never been in through there, so I can’t connoisseur you too much. [1:09:10 – 1:09:11] Adam: First time on the east side. [1:09:11 – 1:09:17] Adam: Would also appreciate some night before spots to grab some food, brews, and general good times. [1:09:18 – 1:09:19] Adam: I don’t think that’s the east side. [1:09:19 – 1:09:21] Erik: I think it was a typo. [1:09:22 – 1:09:24] Adam: Bunion Boy, get it together. [1:09:24 – 1:09:27] Adam: Go get a Bucky Burger. [1:09:27 – 1:09:27] Adam: It’s going to be fine. [1:09:28 – 1:09:35] Adam: We have a connoisseur’s reply on this one from OP Hopalicious, which I will read in full here. [1:09:36 – 1:09:40] Adam: Mudro is west of Basswood, so that is west side, not east side. [1:09:40 – 1:09:42] Adam: We ain’t got to rub it in there, Hopalicious. [1:09:42 – 1:09:45] Adam: Thunder and Bear Trap looks like an amazing trip. [1:09:45 – 1:09:48] Adam: Should be plenty of walleye in those lakes and very few people. [1:09:48 – 1:09:50] Adam: Those lakes are the gateway to iron. [1:09:51 – 1:09:53] Adam: Iron is a bucket list lake for me. [1:09:54 – 1:09:59] Adam: The podcast episode about post-trip meals is a great resource for Ely food spots. [1:09:59 – 1:10:01] Adam: I’m a fan of the Ely Steakhouse. [1:10:01 – 1:10:02] Adam: The Bucky Burger is great. [1:10:02 – 1:10:04] Adam: All right, we’re all on the same page here. [1:10:04 – 1:10:06] Adam: Everybody’s on the same page here. [1:10:07 – 1:10:15] Erik: Also depending on whether they still do it or not or whether the vibe is the same or if you even want to go down this line. [1:10:15 – 1:10:18] Erik: I don’t remember if I – maybe I brought it up on that episode. [1:10:18 – 1:10:21] Erik: I didn’t really realize we did an episode on post-trip food. [1:10:21 – 1:10:23] Erik: I don’t even know what is in our catalog anymore. [1:10:23 – 1:10:25] Erik: There’s too many episodes. [1:10:25 – 1:10:34] Erik: Like, low-key best place in town after the Ely Steakhouse is the Grand Ely Lodge, but not the restaurant side because the restaurant side, it’s good. [1:10:34 – 1:10:34] Erik: It’s fine. [1:10:34 – 1:10:35] Erik: It’s a little stuffy. [1:10:35 – 1:10:36] Erik: It’s a little stuffy. [1:10:36 – 1:10:37] Erik: It’s a little expensive. [1:10:38 – 1:10:38] Erik: The bar. [1:10:38 – 1:10:40] Erik: You got to go to the bar at the Grand Ely Lodge. [1:10:41 – 1:10:46] Erik: They have an excellent wing deal, I believe, on Tuesdays, maybe Wednesdays. [1:10:46 – 1:10:55] Erik: I don’t know if they still do it, 10 years removed from being in that community, but I do remember enjoying going to that little sidebar at the Grand Ely Lodge. [1:10:56 – 1:10:56] Erik: Nice. [1:10:56 – 1:11:00] Erik: You don’t have to be a guest, but you can sneak into the hot tub. [1:11:01 – 1:11:03] Adam: Yeah, they ain’t going to stop you, actually. [1:11:03 – 1:11:03] Adam: It’s encouraged. [1:11:04 – 1:11:05] Adam: I got you scrolled up there, sir. [1:11:05 – 1:11:06] Erik: Oh, I got a big one here. [1:11:07 – 1:11:08] Erik: What do you want to do? [1:11:09 – 1:11:14] Erik: Me read a couple more, and then you read a couple more, and then we GTFO? [1:11:15 – 1:11:16] Adam: That sounds like a plan. [1:11:17 – 1:11:18] Erik: All right. [1:11:18 – 1:11:20] Erik: I see a comment there from you 14 days ago. [1:11:21 – 1:11:23] Erik: Multiple comments from you. [1:11:23 – 1:11:24] Adam: I said I wasn’t even on this thread. [1:11:24 – 1:11:25] Adam: What are you doing? [1:11:26 – 1:11:27] Erik: Old canoe guy. [1:11:28 – 1:11:29] Erik: Three months ago. [1:11:30 – 1:11:31] Erik: Five boxes of wine. [1:11:32 – 1:11:34] Erik: Champion of karate. [1:11:34 – 1:11:36] Erik: Going in Kawishawi Lake in late July. [1:11:37 – 1:11:38] Erik: First time there. [1:11:39 – 1:11:41] Erik: Then up through Poly, Coma, Bream Country. [1:11:42 – 1:11:43] Erik: Bream. [1:11:44 – 1:11:45] Adam: Double Bream mentions tonight. [1:11:46 – 1:11:46] Erik: Yes. [1:11:46 – 1:11:49] Erik: And then a west turn to Fish Dance. [1:11:50 – 1:11:51] Erik: Up by Ashdick. [1:11:51 – 1:11:52] Erik: Yeah. [1:11:52 – 1:11:52] Erik: Up through Insula. [1:11:52 – 1:11:54] Erik: You’re going to go see the Orb? [1:11:54 – 1:11:55] Erik: The Orb. [1:11:55 – 1:11:56] Erik: Gordy and the Orb. [1:11:57 – 1:11:59] Erik: Up through Insula and up through the Numbers Chain. [1:12:00 – 1:12:01] Erik: Exiting at Lake One. [1:12:01 – 1:12:01] Erik: Six days. [1:12:02 – 1:12:03] Erik: Taking it slow and steady. [1:12:03 – 1:12:03] Erik: Sheesh. [1:12:04 – 1:12:09] Erik: South to North Lake will be new territory for me and my beautiful bride. [1:12:10 – 1:12:14] Erik: Fish Dance to Lake One will be a return trip to a familiar area. [1:12:14 – 1:12:17] Erik: No particular goals or things to check off. [1:12:18 – 1:12:21] Erik: Sometimes that’s totally fine. [1:12:22 – 1:12:23] Adam: Go with the flow. [1:12:23 – 1:12:24] Adam: Pictographs on fish dance. [1:12:25 – 1:12:25] Erik: Yes, sir. [1:12:26 – 1:12:27] Erik: Maybe catch a fish or two. [1:12:27 – 1:12:33] Erik: Relax and listen to waves lap against granite and wind sigh through pines. [1:12:33 – 1:12:34] Erik: That’s about it. [1:12:34 – 1:12:36] Erik: Wind sigh through pines. [1:12:36 – 1:12:37] Erik: Very nicely said. [1:12:37 – 1:12:38] Erik: I like it. [1:12:39 – 1:12:41] Erik: Indigo, windigo. [1:12:41 – 1:12:43] Erik: Just one trip reserved so far. [1:12:43 – 1:12:44] Erik: A late September trip. [1:12:45 – 1:12:49] Erik: With my wife, we’re entering at Cross Bay and heading into Long Island. [1:12:50 – 1:12:56] Erik: This is my first trip from the Gunflint side, so I’m finally earning my Eastside merit badge. [1:12:57 – 1:13:00] Erik: Definitely stopping at Poplar House for a burger and Manhattan on the way home. [1:13:01 – 1:13:02] Erik: See y’all out there. [1:13:03 – 1:13:03] Erik: Yes. [1:13:03 – 1:13:06] Erik: I was just up at the Poplar House last night. [1:13:08 – 1:13:09] Erik: Can’t recommend it enough. [1:13:09 – 1:13:10] Erik: Going strong. [1:13:10 – 1:13:11] Erik: Still going strong. [1:13:11 – 1:13:12] Erik: Still doing good things. [1:13:13 – 1:13:15] Erik: Best view in the county. [1:13:16 – 1:13:17] Adam: In the whole damn county. [1:13:17 – 1:13:18] Erik: The whole dang county. [1:13:20 – 1:13:21] Erik: Couple more and then… [1:13:23 – 1:13:29] Adam: It’s on to… Then we’re going to do some twin tower shots and talk about… One’s taller than the other though. [1:13:30 – 1:13:31] Adam: This is really throwing me off. [1:13:33 – 1:13:36] Adam: And we’ll be talking about the Devil’s Kettle. [1:13:36 – 1:13:40] Erik: And Melody Lane’s, the tragic fire at Melody Lane’s. [1:13:40 – 1:13:42] Adam: You were joking last week. [1:13:42 – 1:13:53] Adam: There better not be a, well, unless it, if it was to be a true Grand Marais, it would have to have a restaurant burned down on Easter while Jesus is eating a pineapple. [1:13:54 – 1:13:56] Adam: And it turns out Melody Lane’s burns to the ground. [1:13:56 – 1:13:58] Adam: I had no idea that was coming. [1:13:58 – 1:13:59] Adam: How did the fire start? [1:13:59 – 1:14:00] Adam: Nobody knows. [1:14:00 – 1:14:01] Adam: Was it on purpose? [1:14:01 – 1:14:02] Adam: Was it on purpose? [1:14:02 – 1:14:02] Adam: It may have been. [1:14:03 – 1:14:04] Adam: Looking at you, Adam Brody. [1:14:05 – 1:14:06] Adam: Looking at you. [1:14:06 – 1:14:07] Adam: What, the lead singer? [1:14:07 – 1:14:08] Adam: Yeah. [1:14:08 – 1:14:11] Adam: He was very, very shifty. [1:14:11 – 1:14:13] Adam: Next up on the show, Brother Bear. [1:14:13 – 1:14:17] Adam: I don’t think this is my brother, but it could be. [1:14:18 – 1:14:19] Adam: Brother, are you out there? [1:14:19 – 1:14:20] Adam: Are you listening? [1:14:22 – 1:14:23] Adam: Two months ago. [1:14:23 – 1:14:25] Adam: We’re making some progress here, Eric. [1:14:25 – 1:14:25] Adam: We’re doing it. [1:14:25 – 1:14:28] Adam: We’re cracking into the two-month-ago Brother Bear. [1:14:29 – 1:14:31] Adam: Next up, two permits are booked. [1:14:32 – 1:14:38] Adam: August, we’re going cross Bay Lake with the only for sure planning info being that I will be there. [1:14:38 – 1:14:39] Adam: That’s all you need. [1:14:39 – 1:14:39] Erik: I like that. [1:14:40 – 1:14:41] Adam: Yeah, that’s all you need. [1:14:42 – 1:14:47] Adam: September, we’re doing Stewart River with two brother-in-laws and newly retired father-in-law. [1:14:48 – 1:15:04] Adam: Two goals for this trip, staying on a certain island campsite, you know the one, and doing the Stewart Lake to Dahlgren River Portage, and not to paddle the Dahlgren, but to enjoy the pines and sights of the rapids and falls. [1:15:04 – 1:15:07] Adam: Definitely a top five scenic portage. [1:15:07 – 1:15:08] Adam: You know the one? [1:15:09 – 1:15:11] Adam: Dahlgren River Portage. [1:15:11 – 1:15:12] Adam: You have any idea what’s going on here? [1:15:12 – 1:15:13] Adam: No, I don’t. [1:15:13 – 1:15:16] Adam: Four boxes of wine have been earned, and I’m intrigued. [1:15:17 – 1:15:18] Adam: Off the Stewart River? [1:15:18 – 1:15:20] Adam: Up in… Dawgreen Portage. [1:15:21 – 1:15:22] Adam: Dawgreen. [1:15:22 – 1:15:23] Adam: I love it. [1:15:23 – 1:15:24] Adam: There’s a lot of river up in there. [1:15:24 – 1:15:25] Adam: Yeah. [1:15:25 – 1:15:32] Adam: Yeah, it’s definitely in the bingo hopper for us there, Brother Bear, and now you’ve really piqued my interest. [1:15:32 – 1:15:33] Adam: I’ve got to look more into this. [1:15:33 – 1:15:35] Adam: Two brothers. [1:15:35 – 1:15:43] Adam: Next up, some clown on here saying, anybody else want to hop in here and make a comment while there’s still ice on the lakes? [1:15:43 – 1:15:44] Adam: Gee-hoo. [1:15:44 – 1:15:46] Adam: Get a fucking life. [1:15:46 – 1:15:47] Adam: Get a life, you clown. [1:15:47 – 1:15:47] Erik: Unbelievable. [1:15:49 – 1:15:51] Adam: Somebody did reply to that. [1:15:51 – 1:15:52] Adam: I suppose I should read that. [1:15:54 – 1:15:55] Adam: Why would you reply to me? [1:15:55 – 1:15:56] Adam: Just post fresh. [1:15:57 – 1:15:58] Adam: Oh, God. [1:15:58 – 1:15:59] Adam: Then there’s a huge one under here. [1:15:59 – 1:16:08] Adam: We’re just going to end it here with a great friend of the show, 13 days ago, replying to me on here for some reason. [1:16:08 – 1:16:10] Adam: Why is anybody upvoting my comment? [1:16:10 – 1:16:10] Adam: This is ridiculous. [1:16:11 – 1:16:11] Adam: Write it. [1:16:12 – 1:16:12] Adam: Get your shit together. [1:16:13 – 1:16:17] Adam: Next up on the show, great friend of the show, Judé Bresson. [1:16:20 – 1:16:21] Adam: 13 days ago. [1:16:22 – 1:16:28] Adam: The wife and I took a weekend getaway to Lutzen and Grand Marais this past weekend. [1:16:29 – 1:16:30] Adam: Let’s do the math here. [1:16:30 – 1:16:31] Adam: 13 days ago this past weekend? [1:16:31 – 1:16:31] Erik: Yeah. [1:16:36 – 1:16:37] Adam: May? [1:16:37 – 1:16:37] Adam: I don’t want to do the math. [1:16:37 – 1:16:39] Adam: Well, it’s early May. [1:16:39 – 1:16:41] Adam: What a cold, rainy weekend it was. [1:16:42 – 1:16:48] Adam: Still plenty of snow on some of Luton’s slopes, although skiing has been done for a few weeks now. [1:16:48 – 1:16:53] Adam: Looks like a beautiful stretch of warm, sunny days is starting right now. [1:16:54 – 1:16:54] Adam: Two boxes of wine. [1:16:55 – 1:16:57] Adam: You should have gotten more boxes of wine for that comment. [1:16:58 – 1:17:01] Adam: And, uh, you’ve always been a great friend of the show. [1:17:01 – 1:17:05] Adam: I appreciate the comment and, uh, [1:17:05 – 1:17:10] Adam: I’m glad you got to visit Grand Marais even though it was cold and rainy at the beginning of May. [1:17:10 – 1:17:14] Erik: I’m pretty sure they’re from Thunder Bay. [1:17:14 – 1:17:14] Erik: Right on. [1:17:14 – 1:17:15] Erik: Got down. [1:17:15 – 1:17:17] Erik: What’s a Thunder Bay native called? [1:17:19 – 1:17:42] Erik: uh a sleeping uh a sleeping giant yeah i was gonna say sleeping giant but maybe a woke awoken uh no are they woke up there um probably yeah they’re from ontario they’re at least 10 years ahead of us here in slender bay like the the the new like portland of canada i’ve kind of heard from a few people that like they’re trying pretty hip make it into like [1:17:43 – 1:17:45] Erik: Because it’s cheap to move there. [1:17:45 – 1:17:46] Erik: Sure. [1:17:46 – 1:17:48] Erik: And that’s inevitably what’s going to happen. [1:17:48 – 1:17:51] Erik: There’s going to be… You wait like five years. [1:17:51 – 1:17:56] Erik: Des Moines is going to be the next place to be because it’s cheap. [1:17:56 – 1:17:57] Adam: Well, whatever. [1:17:57 – 1:17:59] Adam: Thunder Bay’s got a lot going for it. [1:17:59 – 1:18:04] Erik: But at least it’s got the natural resources, the natural wonders, outdoor. [1:18:04 – 1:18:06] Erik: People are into… Beautiful port. [1:18:06 – 1:18:08] Erik: It’s like an ice climbing mecca, apparently. [1:18:08 – 1:18:09] Erik: Yeah. [1:18:09 – 1:18:12] Adam: A lot of good cross-country skiing up there. [1:18:12 – 1:18:12] Adam: Yeah. [1:18:13 – 1:18:15] Adam: A lot to love about Thunder Bay. [1:18:15 – 1:18:15] Erik: Great airport. [1:18:16 – 1:18:22] Erik: Considering where it was even just 10, 15 years ago, some of my earliest visits up there, I was like… [1:18:23 – 1:18:29] Adam: Well, I listened to that podcast about the seedy underbelly of Thunder Bay. [1:18:29 – 1:18:36] Adam: Anybody can go search that out and find that podcast. [1:18:36 – 1:18:37] Adam: It’s kind of sad. [1:18:37 – 1:18:38] Adam: Serial? [1:18:38 – 1:18:40] Adam: No, it was just about Thunder Bay. [1:18:40 – 1:18:41] Adam: Just about Thunder Bay. [1:18:41 – 1:18:44] Adam: Yeah, it’s just a sad podcast. [1:18:44 – 1:18:45] Erik: I think it’s coming around, though. [1:18:45 – 1:18:47] Erik: I’ve gotten the sense from a few people that it might be. [1:18:47 – 1:18:49] Adam: I’ve always heard that, and I’ve always loved going to Thunder Bay. [1:18:50 – 1:18:52] Adam: This is a great place to visit. [1:18:53 – 1:19:19] Adam: yeah but i don’t know i think there’s a lot to like about it but people it’s horrible i don’t know compared to some of the towns in america it’s easy to to trash on it that’s for sure yeah there’s a lot going on there it’s unsavory for sure but you know i don’t know i i could see living in thunder bay someday yeah if you want to be in a place that’s a little bit larger you know not just uh yeah a tiny town it’s kind of like a it’s like a small big town [1:19:20 – 1:19:25] Adam: Yeah, for us, though, it’s a quicker drive to go to Thunder Bay than to go to Duluth. [1:19:27 – 1:19:30] Adam: There’s some advantages to going in either direction. [1:19:30 – 1:19:35] Adam: Anyways, I’d always wanted to get to Sleeping Giant, and I haven’t been there yet. [1:19:35 – 1:19:37] Adam: That’s on my bucket list. [1:19:37 – 1:19:38] Adam: Sure, yeah. [1:19:38 – 1:19:41] Adam: Anyways, everybody is welcome to listen to the podcast from either side of the border. [1:19:42 – 1:19:46] Adam: It’s just an imaginary line drawn on some lakes and rivers out there. [1:19:47 – 1:19:55] Adam: We’re all neighbors up here in the North Country here, and I think that’s a good place to leave this episode of Tumble Home, a Border Waters podcast. [1:19:55 – 1:19:57] Erik: Right in the wheelhouse, hour 20. [1:19:57 – 1:19:58] Erik: There we go. [1:19:58 – 1:19:59] Adam: This has been episode 219 of Tumble Home. [1:19:59 – 1:20:00] Adam: My name has been Adam. [1:20:05 – 1:20:07] Adam: With my dear friend Eric here in the shed. [1:20:07 – 1:20:08] Adam: Got the party lights going. [1:20:08 – 1:20:10] Adam: It’s been quite the evening here. [1:20:10 – 1:20:12] Adam: Beautiful night on the North Shore. [1:20:13 – 1:20:19] Adam: First of the mazis coming out, but been just kind of idyllic out here lately. [1:20:19 – 1:20:21] Adam: And Eric’s looking very tan. [1:20:21 – 1:20:23] Adam: How am I still looking tan? [1:20:23 – 1:20:24] Erik: I don’t understand it. [1:20:24 – 1:20:27] Erik: I haven’t been in Mexico for three months. [1:20:27 – 1:20:28] Adam: You got to glow about you, sir. [1:20:29 – 1:20:30] Adam: Probably all that gravy you had. [1:20:30 – 1:20:31] Erik: Deep bays. [1:20:32 – 1:20:32] Erik: Deep bays. [1:20:34 – 1:20:37] Adam: All right, for Tumble Home, it’s time to leave you there for the week. [1:20:37 – 1:20:39] Adam: We’ll catch you next Sunday. [1:20:39 – 1:20:40] Adam: Thanks for being here. [1:20:40 – 1:20:41] Adam: Shout out to all our Patreons. [1:20:42 – 1:20:47] Adam: You can catch us on the Gmail, on the Picture app, or send us a voicemail. [1:20:47 – 1:20:48] Adam: The thing is in the show notes. [1:20:48 – 1:20:49] Adam: You can call the thing. [1:20:49 – 1:20:50] Adam: Call the number up. [1:20:50 – 1:20:51] Adam: Try calling it. [1:20:51 – 1:20:52] Adam: I haven’t gotten any voicemails. [1:20:52 – 1:20:53] Adam: I don’t know if it still works, but maybe it’s broke. [1:20:53 – 1:20:54] Adam: Test it. [1:20:54 – 1:20:54] Adam: Test the waters. [1:20:54 – 1:20:55] Adam: Go ahead and try it. [1:20:56 – 1:21:07] Adam: We’ll be coming back next week with a comment from TheBigSag, and we’ll conclude this conversation and touch on some other ideas. [1:21:07 – 1:21:09] Erik: We’re going to kill it next week, no matter how long it takes. [1:21:09 – 1:21:10] Erik: Absolutely. [1:21:11 – 1:21:13] Erik: Too long, but whatever it takes. [1:21:13 – 1:21:13] Erik: We’ll do it. [1:21:14 – 1:21:14] Erik: It’s going to happen. [1:21:15 – 1:21:16] Erik: We don’t have anything in the hopper. [1:21:16 – 1:21:34] Erik: I don’t know if I’ve necessarily vocalized this to you, but I’d like to try and, for as long as we can, coincide episodes, weekly episodes, to make up for the disservice that we did to our patrons with weekly TCCs. [1:21:35 – 1:21:41] Adam: Yeah, I mean, I don’t know if it’s a disservice, but we even last year didn’t have that many TCCs. [1:21:41 – 1:21:50] Adam: There is a ton of episodes out there, including somebody just reminded me about the zombie survival guide episode that’s on the Patreon. [1:21:50 – 1:21:52] Adam: It’s not just Tumble Home Cinema Classics. [1:21:53 – 1:21:58] Adam: There’s a lot of stuff on the Tumble Home Patreon that people might enjoy. [1:21:58 – 1:21:59] Adam: For five bucks a month, you get it. [1:21:59 – 1:22:20] Adam: access to all of it as we outlined last week it is a goddamn screaming deal it’s a screaming deal we’re gonna get into jennifer’s jessica’s jennifer’s body coming up this week and then who knows we got a lot of action on the whiteboard uh had some suggestions on the discord and on the subreddit of of [1:22:20 – 1:22:23] Adam: other titles they’d like added. [1:22:23 – 1:22:25] Adam: So we’re always open to suggestions. [1:22:26 – 1:22:32] Adam: If you’re a patron, your suggestion does carry more weight than if you’re just some rando on Instagram. [1:22:32 – 1:22:34] Adam: So consider that. [1:22:34 – 1:22:43] Adam: If anybody really has a good idea of something that involves paddling, camping, or bad fishing, we’d love to watch it and make fun of it. [1:22:43 – 1:22:46] Adam: So that’s what Tumble Home Cinema Classics is always about. [1:22:46 – 1:22:52] Erik: It for sure is, but I feel like this summer I’m totally willing to go completely off the board. [1:22:52 – 1:22:55] Erik: I know at the beginning it was all about, like, it’s got to be fishing. [1:22:55 – 1:22:56] Erik: It’s got to be somewhere adjacent. [1:22:56 – 1:22:59] Erik: There’s only so many river wilds out there, you know. [1:22:59 – 1:23:03] Erik: And I would love to keep doing things, but there are only so many bloodhooks in the world. [1:23:03 – 1:23:07] Erik: Does anybody else know of a comparable bloodhook that I haven’t seen? [1:23:07 – 1:23:08] Erik: I would love to watch it. [1:23:09 – 1:23:15] Erik: But we might just have to go in a completely different direction and do some crazy things that might not be… [1:23:16 – 1:23:24] Erik: At the very least, we would have to really grasp at some straws to make a connection to anything camping or outdoors based. [1:23:24 – 1:23:25] Erik: But I’m fine with that. [1:23:25 – 1:23:28] Erik: I am fine talking about anything. [1:23:29 – 1:23:34] Erik: And I think we’re kind of crossing that threshold by talking about Jennifer’s body tonight. [1:23:35 – 1:23:36] Erik: It’s got a waterfall in it. [1:23:36 – 1:23:36] Erik: Barely. [1:23:37 – 1:23:44] Erik: It’s got a waterfall in it that is named after a waterfall feature of a state park that’s 20 minutes away from where we live. [1:23:44 – 1:23:49] Erik: That’s about it, which you could argue is maybe more of a connection than any other movie we’ve ever done. [1:23:50 – 1:23:51] Adam: Yeah, no doubt. [1:23:51 – 1:23:54] Erik: And a bar burns down, which, you know, that’s the thing that happens up here, too. [1:23:55 – 1:23:55] Adam: Absolutely. [1:23:57 – 1:24:00] Erik: Stay tuned to the TCC. [1:24:00 – 1:24:03] Erik: It’s going to be more regular than you have ever wanted. [1:24:04 – 1:24:05] Erik: Unbelievable. [1:24:05 – 1:24:06] Adam: Life is precious. [1:24:07 – 1:24:08] Adam: Every day is a miracle. [1:24:09 – 1:24:13] Adam: And remember, everyone, enjoy paddling.
