[0:02:05 – 0:02:06] Adam: Pretty nice out here.
[0:02:06 – 0:02:07] Adam: 50 maybe?
[0:02:07 – 0:02:08] Adam: Pretty nice here.
[0:02:08 – 0:02:09] Adam: We’re hibernating in the shed.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:11] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:11 – 0:02:12] Adam: But we’re awake also.
[0:02:14 – 0:02:17] Adam: It’s a waking nightmare here in the tumble shed.
[0:02:17 – 0:02:17] Adam: Just like…
[0:02:18 – 0:02:20] Adam: You know, black bears sleep most of their life.
[0:02:21 – 0:02:27] Adam: And today it’s Ronald’s share outdoor calendar fact of the night for October 11th, 2023.
[0:02:27 – 0:02:30] Adam: Let me check this here.
[0:02:30 – 0:02:31] Adam: Tumbleweed tumbles.
[0:02:32 – 0:02:33] Adam: Sunsets at 635 p.m.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:39] Erik: It seems like it would be more appropriate for some kind of an outdoorsman of the West.
[0:02:39 – 0:02:40] Adam: Are there tumbleweeds in Minnesota?
[0:02:41 – 0:02:42] Adam: Am I unaware?
[0:02:42 – 0:02:45] Erik: Maybe down in Worthington or Albert Lee.
[0:02:45 – 0:02:47] Adam: Out there, huh?
[0:02:47 – 0:02:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:47 – 0:02:49] Adam: He’s pointing up there.
[0:02:49 – 0:02:52] Erik: He’s nodding towards the West.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:54] Erik: Somehow he’s got the directions figured out.
[0:02:54 – 0:02:56] Adam: I know where West is at all times.
[0:02:56 – 0:03:00] Adam: My internal compass, like a black bear’s, is impeccable.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:01] Erik: And how.
[0:03:03 – 0:03:03] Erik: And true.
[0:03:04 – 0:03:04] Erik: Yep.
[0:03:05 – 0:03:08] Adam: And we got…
[0:03:08 – 0:03:10] Adam: I’m going to go ahead and admonish the Tumble Homies.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:17] Adam: Quit downvoting and upvoting stuff in part two of a series because we pulled up the feed and, of course, everything’s all screwed up again.
[0:03:18 – 0:03:21] Adam: So Ape Adventure isn’t next up, I guess, on the show.
[0:03:21 – 0:03:23] Adam: Like we had promised last week.
[0:03:23 – 0:03:28] Adam: We always keep our promises and Tumble Homies need to get their ass together and stop screwing with the feed.
[0:03:29 – 0:03:33] Adam: After part one is recorded, please stop voting.
[0:03:33 – 0:03:34] Erik: We got to freeze.
[0:03:34 – 0:03:34] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:03:34 – 0:03:36] Erik: There’s got to be a subreddit freeze.
[0:03:36 – 0:03:38] Adam: This is ridiculous.
[0:03:38 – 0:03:39] Adam: This is outrageous.
[0:03:40 – 0:03:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:03:40 – 0:03:44] Erik: Well, we tried to keep up our end of the promise, and you all let us down.
[0:03:45 – 0:03:45] Erik: Once again.
[0:03:46 – 0:03:47] Erik: Once again.
[0:03:47 – 0:03:49] Erik: What are you guys doing?
[0:03:50 – 0:03:50] Erik: We’ll be all right.
[0:03:50 – 0:03:51] Erik: We’ll be fine.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:52] Erik: What?
[0:03:52 – 0:03:52] Adam: All right.
[0:03:53 – 0:03:56] Adam: Tonight’s art supplies are started off with some hot plastic.
[0:03:57 – 0:03:57] Erik: Dang.
[0:03:57 – 0:04:00] Adam: From a dear friend of the show, Isle of Pine.
[0:04:00 – 0:04:01] Adam: Is that right, Eric?
[0:04:01 – 0:04:02] Adam: Can you check the whiteboard on that one?
[0:04:02 – 0:04:03] Adam: I can’t see that far.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:06] Adam: Isle of Pines or Isle of Pines?
[0:04:06 – 0:04:09] Erik: Is this a Wes Anderson sequel here?
[0:04:09 – 0:04:34] Adam: i like these wow yes sir i think one of them has a bear on it doesn’t that yes this is crazy how this works out this is literally we’re not messing we don’t mess with the feed we have a couple the art supplies come in we put them on the whiteboard this is how we’ve always done it eric yeah and uh then we open them up in due time some west side discs here a stag and a bear oh boy ursus chonkus
[0:04:34 – 0:04:38] Erik: Wow, what are these, some mid-range slash drivers here?
[0:04:38 – 0:04:40] Adam: Looks like some 9-speeds to me.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:44] Adam: It looks like some Primo plastic from Westside.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:46] Erik: Some 8-speeds, yeah.
[0:04:46 – 0:04:49] Erik: 8-speed, you got a 2 on the fade, 6 on the glide.
[0:04:50 – 0:04:51] Erik: Negative one turn.
[0:04:52 – 0:04:53] Erik: Does it really matter?
[0:04:53 – 0:05:02] Adam: This one was identified as bag is ripped in the whiteboard, and the bag is ripped, but we didn’t drop them because we’re pros.
[0:05:03 – 0:05:08] Adam: We got some Portage Brewing Company Lakefellow Juicy IPAs.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:11] Adam: As long as it’s not any more figgy pudding.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:12] Adam: Hops Nelson.
[0:05:13 – 0:05:14] Adam: Nelson Hops?
[0:05:14 – 0:05:37] Adam: nelson hops nelson’s citra nelson’s and cashmere cairo nelson’s these are all made up hops i think so they’re just doing whatever they want now we got four biggins here print whatever you want on those things you can say whatever you want if you were giving us west side discs with a bear on them you can literally say whatever you want yep all right hold on where are those from
[0:05:38 – 0:05:41] Adam: I think it’s from, oh, where is the brewery?
[0:05:41 – 0:05:43] Erik: Portage Brewing Company.
[0:05:44 – 0:05:45] Erik: Let’s see if we can figure that one out for you.
[0:05:45 – 0:05:48] Erik: All these gifts are just so applicable.
[0:05:48 – 0:05:49] Adam: They are, aren’t they nice?
[0:05:50 – 0:05:50] Erik: Applicable.
[0:05:50 – 0:05:53] Adam: Oh, it’s, oh, okay.
[0:05:53 – 0:05:59] Adam: Brewed at Fair State Brewing Cooperative in St. Paulet.
[0:06:00 – 0:06:02] Adam: Juicy, soft, tropical.
[0:06:03 – 0:06:05] Adam: Never heard of an IPA described as soft tropical.
[0:06:06 – 0:06:06] Adam: No.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:10] Adam: They add extra softness into the cashmere.
[0:06:11 – 0:06:14] Adam: That must be where the cashmere comes in on the Lakefellow here.
[0:06:14 – 0:06:14] Erik: I guess.
[0:06:14 – 0:06:19] Erik: So the Ferris State just let them brew at their brewery?
[0:06:19 – 0:06:21] Adam: They rent them out a couple kettles.
[0:06:22 – 0:06:47] Erik: nelson that’s your nelson hop there that’s a real nice soft hop it’s a beaut 6.0 that’s right in your wheelhouse so juicy night uh hazy no juicy it’s a soft and juicy night dream over here gross beauty um so soft
[0:06:48 – 0:06:49] Adam: It does taste soft.
[0:06:50 – 0:06:50] Adam: I’ll give it a…
[0:06:50 – 0:06:54] Erik: So like extra fizzy or… You have to describe this to me.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:56] Erik: I’ve completely forgotten what beer tastes like.
[0:06:56 – 0:06:59] Adam: Yeah, this guy doesn’t know anything about beer.
[0:06:59 – 0:07:00] Adam: Pass it over here.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:01] Adam: Don’t let him taste this.
[0:07:02 – 0:07:04] Adam: What does a soft IPA taste like?
[0:07:04 – 0:07:08] Adam: Well, it tastes like you’re drinking it while laying on a pillow.
[0:07:09 – 0:07:09] Adam: Oh.
[0:07:09 – 0:07:09] Adam: Um…
[0:07:11 – 0:07:12] Adam: Nutmeg?
[0:07:13 – 0:07:13] Erik: Nutmeg?
[0:07:13 – 0:07:14] Adam: Nutmeg.
[0:07:14 – 0:07:15] Adam: That’s the Nelson hops.
[0:07:15 – 0:07:17] Adam: That must be the Nelson Cairo’s.
[0:07:17 – 0:07:18] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:07:18 – 0:07:20] Adam: I’m completely making it up at this point.
[0:07:20 – 0:07:22] Erik: Oh, you should have just continued on with Old Face Confidence.
[0:07:22 – 0:07:23] Erik: It tastes so soft.
[0:07:23 – 0:07:24] Adam: Yeah.
[0:07:24 – 0:07:28] Adam: Well, you can pretty much baloney your way through any old Shazam.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:30] Adam: 238 episodes in.
[0:07:30 – 0:07:32] Adam: That’s what we’re doing.
[0:07:32 – 0:07:33] Adam: 238 here on Tomahome.
[0:07:34 – 0:07:34] Adam: Confidence.
[0:07:35 – 0:07:36] Adam: It’s all about the confidence.
[0:07:36 – 0:07:36] Adam: Yeah.
[0:07:37 – 0:07:38] Adam: And this one’s real soft.
[0:07:38 – 0:07:39] Adam: Soft Confidence.
[0:07:39 – 0:07:39] Adam: Soft Confidence.
[0:07:39 – 0:07:40] Erik: Soft Confidence.
[0:07:41 – 0:07:43] Adam: Walk tall and carry a soft beer.
[0:07:43 – 0:07:46] Adam: That’s what Teddy Marks always said.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:48] Erik: Classic.
[0:07:48 – 0:07:51] Adam: My favorite politician and American hero, Teddy Marks.
[0:07:52 – 0:07:54] Adam: Teddy Marks.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:55] Adam: I’m so confused right now.
[0:07:55 – 0:07:57] Adam: I don’t even know what I’m talking about.
[0:07:58 – 0:07:58] Erik: I’m there with you.
[0:07:59 – 0:08:00] Erik: I got it all figured out.
[0:08:00 – 0:08:01] Adam: What is going on right now?
[0:08:01 – 0:08:02] Adam: I like the color green.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:04] Adam: I like the simplicity of the can.
[0:08:04 – 0:08:06] Adam: There’s some waving going on here at the Lakefellow.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:07] Erik: Some dark waving.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:08] Adam: So I don’t understand, though.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:15] Adam: Portage Brewing Company is not Ferris State, so it’s a subsidiary, or this is just a kettle rental kind of scenario.
[0:08:15 – 0:08:22] Erik: I don’t know if it’s like the Ferris State is a co-op, so that means you can come in and brew and use their facilities.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:22] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:23] Erik: What is the…
[0:08:23 – 0:08:24] Erik: You tell me.
[0:08:24 – 0:08:25] Erik: What does it mean?
[0:08:25 – 0:08:26] Erik: Yeah, I’m in a co-op.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:27] Erik: I don’t even know.
[0:08:27 – 0:08:29] Adam: I don’t understand the governance.
[0:08:29 – 0:08:31] Adam: I don’t understand how the board of directors is elected.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:37] Erik: Well, I’ve been to a fair state, and I believe you can buy into the co-op, and then you get cheaper beer, maybe.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:41] Adam: And you’re allowed to get in on the fermentation, maybe.
[0:08:41 – 0:08:43] Erik: Yeah, taking advantage of the apparatus.
[0:08:43 – 0:08:43] Adam: Let me see these discs.
[0:08:44 – 0:08:45] Erik: They’re hard.
[0:08:45 – 0:08:45] Erik: They’re sharp.
[0:08:45 – 0:08:50] Adam: We got ourselves a Stag, 8-speed Stag, which looks like a moose.
[0:08:51 – 0:08:53] Erik: Yeah, Stag, moose, you know, same thing.
[0:08:54 – 0:08:54] Adam: Nice pink.
[0:08:55 – 0:08:55] Adam: Nice pink.
[0:08:56 – 0:08:59] Adam: I don’t know anything about Westside Discs at all.
[0:09:00 – 0:09:05] Erik: I had a Westside disc in that… What was that phone game we were playing for a while?
[0:09:05 – 0:09:07] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:08] Erik: The little app game.
[0:09:08 – 0:09:09] Erik: Discall Valley.
[0:09:09 – 0:09:10] Erik: Discall Valley, yeah.
[0:09:10 – 0:09:12] Erik: I had a Westside.
[0:09:12 – 0:09:13] Erik: There was like a…
[0:09:13 – 0:09:14] Erik: This one’s also Domi.
[0:09:14 – 0:09:16] Erik: Like a kid, like a prince-ish kid on it.
[0:09:17 – 0:09:19] Erik: Don’t they have like medieval-themed discs?
[0:09:19 – 0:09:22] Erik: That’s what I always associate with the Westside discs.
[0:09:23 – 0:09:27] Erik: Well, these are probably, I’m assuming… Ballista Pro, maybe, is what you had.
[0:09:27 – 0:09:29] Erik: Animal series, but…
[0:09:29 – 0:09:33] Adam: This is a tournament series orbit plastic bear.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:38] Adam: This is a very attractive color scheme of like… That is nice.
[0:09:38 – 0:09:39] Adam: Fuchsia and…
[0:09:42 – 0:10:08] Adam: cerulean cerulean nailed it azul another eight speed this is i can’t believe it though what are the chances because i i actually did open this up this is not why the bag was ripped either the bear um this was dropped off at the co-op and i opened them up when i got to work they were in the cooler and i looked i was like wow there’s discs in here and sure enough i was like wow i’ve never seen these either of these molds a bear and a stag look at that thing
[0:10:08 – 0:10:09] Erik: It’s a heck of a bear.
[0:10:09 – 0:10:10] Erik: I like it.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:14] Adam: I completely forgot that these were in there until just now.
[0:10:14 – 0:10:16] Adam: And then, of course, there’s one with a bear on it.
[0:10:16 – 0:10:17] Adam: It’s ridiculous.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:18] Adam: Dang fat bear.
[0:10:18 – 0:10:19] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:19 – 0:10:21] Adam: Welcome to fat bear month here on Tumble Home.
[0:10:21 – 0:10:22] Adam: What is that?
[0:10:22 – 0:10:23] Adam: An Indiana grizzly?
[0:10:24 – 0:10:26] Adam: Yeah, this doesn’t look like a black bear.
[0:10:26 – 0:10:27] Adam: I’ll say that.
[0:10:27 – 0:10:28] Adam: That thing is real chonky.
[0:10:29 – 0:10:31] Erik: Yeah, that’s a shoulder blade on that thing.
[0:10:31 – 0:10:32] Erik: That thing’s half camel.
[0:10:32 – 0:10:33] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:10:34 – 0:10:36] Adam: Anyways, we each get one of these.
[0:10:39 – 0:10:42] Adam: We’ll maybe play around after midnight round.
[0:10:42 – 0:10:43] Adam: We’ll just zing them into the darkness.
[0:10:44 – 0:10:45] Adam: They’re on glow discs, so we’ll find them.
[0:10:46 – 0:10:49] Adam: They’re not going to go too far, but it looks like you could really wing one of these.
[0:10:49 – 0:10:49] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:10:50 – 0:10:51] Erik: I wouldn’t want to get hit with one of those.
[0:10:51 – 0:10:51] Erik: No.
[0:10:53 – 0:10:53] Erik: I got some points.
[0:10:53 – 0:10:54] Adam: Got some pretty sweet.
[0:10:57 – 0:11:05] Adam: It’s like a colorful blue rim with a nice dark pink inside on this bear with a shiny blue stamp on it.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:06] Adam: Beautiful.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:09] Adam: A bit of a tie-dye kind of effect going on there with a halo.
[0:11:09 – 0:11:11] Adam: I like it a lot.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:15] Adam: And then the pink one’s also got that tie-dye effect going on there too.
[0:11:15 – 0:11:19] Erik: That one looks like it could potentially be glowy, but I don’t think it is.
[0:11:20 – 0:11:20] Adam: I don’t get calling it.
[0:11:20 – 0:11:23] Adam: I’ve never heard anybody call a big bull moose a stag though.
[0:11:23 – 0:11:23] Erik: No.
[0:11:23 – 0:11:23] Erik: No.
[0:11:25 – 0:11:49] Adam: anyways thank you isle of pines i’m making sure i have that right you got it these came in in july i believe thank you for the donations i’m gonna give the beers uh eight out of eight eight out of eight i don’t think we’ve ever given a beer that score chunky super chunk bear score soft so soft soft underbelly
[0:11:50 – 0:11:50] Adam: It is really good.
[0:11:50 – 0:11:56] Adam: I don’t really understand how to describe a soft beer to people, but kind of like soft water.
[0:11:57 – 0:12:01] Adam: I’ve never had soft water in my life, but if you’ve ever been in a
[0:12:02 – 0:12:08] Erik: You’re not running down to the Home Depot bi-monthly to get your sack of pellets to get the water softener all filled up?
[0:12:08 – 0:12:10] Adam: Make sure my laundry feels real nice.
[0:12:11 – 0:12:15] Adam: Yeah, no, I’m not living that kind of life of luxury out here in the sticks.
[0:12:15 – 0:12:20] Adam: But that’s kind of, I don’t know, maybe these beers have been softened by salt pellet.
[0:12:20 – 0:12:20] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:12:21 – 0:12:24] Erik: Do you still buy water softener pellets places?
[0:12:24 – 0:12:27] Erik: I remember as a youth hauling sacks of those things out of the basement.
[0:12:27 – 0:12:30] Adam: The only good use for that up here is to break ice dams.
[0:12:30 – 0:12:31] Adam: Jesus.
[0:12:31 – 0:12:32] Adam: You got to get your pellets up there.
[0:12:32 – 0:12:33] Erik: That’s what my parents do.
[0:12:35 – 0:12:39] Erik: Speaking of Indiana and Grizzlies.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:40] Erik: Right.
[0:12:40 – 0:12:42] Erik: We are unfortunately talking about…
[0:12:42 – 0:12:43] Erik: Unfortunately?
[0:12:43 – 0:12:51] Erik: One of the atrocity on the eyes, Tumble Home Cinema Classics this week, Zom Beavers.
[0:12:51 – 0:12:51] Erik: What do you mean?
[0:12:52 – 0:12:54] Adam: I thought that was pretty pleasing on the eyes.
[0:12:56 – 0:13:21] Adam: white milky eyes yeah yeah that’s all you need to for a zombiever is to go get um something that looks like my son like my son has a more realistic looking beaver um stuffed beaver than the beavers used in this film yeah you just put a little milky eye on it and make him go milky eye yeah the best part about this movie is it was literally only an hour and 10 minutes long
[0:13:23 – 0:13:41] Erik: they couldn’t even get an hour and a half on a zombie it said an hour and 21 I was like wow that’s kind of short but it literally ended at an hour and 10 and they filled the extra time with bleeping outtakes this is the hackiest move ever class projects in 6th grade outtakes not even funny outtakes
[0:13:42 – 0:13:42] Adam: Really?
[0:13:43 – 0:13:44] Adam: You know, they’re funny.
[0:13:45 – 0:13:46] Adam: Compared to the movie, they were funny.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:47] Erik: I guess.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:50] Adam: If you’re in that realm.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:53] Adam: I kind of enjoyed this movie, sad to say.
[0:13:53 – 0:13:58] Erik: Well, we’re going to have a long and robust discussion about why you’re wrong.
[0:13:59 – 0:14:00] Adam: I’ll tell you why.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:03] Adam: If you’re being attacked by a zombie, you don’t want to be in a wooden cabin.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:32] Erik: or live next to neighbors who are somehow spoiler quick spoiler here and then we will get to bear chat harboring the zombievers themselves oh are they the ones who let them loose maybe I don’t know I doubt it there’s one point where he’s literally petting one of the zombievers and it’s like a little kitty on the floor and he helps one chew a tree down
[0:14:34 – 0:14:34] Adam: You know.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:36] Erik: Trash.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:41] Erik: Lowest tier movies I think we’ve ever done on Tumblr Cinema Classics.
[0:14:41 – 0:14:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:42 – 0:14:47] Adam: It’s been a memorable year of critter features on Tumblr Cinema Classics.
[0:14:47 – 0:14:51] Erik: Peak critters of like TCC years.
[0:14:51 – 0:14:51] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:51 – 0:14:53] Erik: Most critter films ever discussed.
[0:14:53 – 0:14:54] Adam: Creature feature.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:55] Erik: Creature feature.
[0:14:55 – 0:15:00] Erik: We got to find something else to redeem ourselves in the creature realm.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:10] Adam: We got to get a bear movie next, obviously, for Fat Bear Month because there was a bear, a surprise bear that befriends the beavers and is helpful.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:12] Erik: Well, everybody just turns into a zombie at the end.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:14] Adam: Even the bear gets the beaver fever.
[0:15:15 – 0:15:15] Adam: Yeah.
[0:15:16 – 0:15:19] Adam: Enough with the beaver jokes, please, guys.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:21] Adam: Yeah, that’s the basis of the whole…
[0:15:21 – 0:15:22] Adam: Pretty much the whole movie right there.
[0:15:22 – 0:15:24] Erik: What was Bill Burr doing in this?
[0:15:24 – 0:15:30] Erik: What size of the dump truck did they have to drive up to his house to get filled with cash?
[0:15:30 – 0:15:34] Adam: They just let him have a couple of those containers of medical bio-waste.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:38] Erik: He probably just filmed for like two hours in that truck just riffing.
[0:15:38 – 0:15:40] Adam: Clearly that’s all… Oh, that wasn’t… Yeah, unscripted.
[0:15:40 – 0:15:41] Adam: It’s just like Tumble Home.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:44] Adam: Completely independent, unscripted, and hilarious.
[0:15:45 – 0:15:48] Adam: Bill Burr, do you know who the other person in the truck was?
[0:15:49 – 0:15:52] Erik: He kind of seemed like a knockoff Dusty Slay sort.
[0:15:52 – 0:15:53] Erik: We’re having a good time.
[0:15:53 – 0:15:54] Erik: That guy?
[0:15:54 – 0:15:55] Erik: It was John Mayer.
[0:15:56 – 0:15:56] Erik: What?
[0:15:56 – 0:15:57] Erik: Yes.
[0:15:57 – 0:15:59] Adam: How much makeup did he have on?
[0:15:59 – 0:16:00] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:16:00 – 0:16:05] Adam: Unrecognizable John Mayer as the co-pilot in the medical bio-waste truck.
[0:16:05 – 0:16:09] Adam: And this is literally only the 10th best part of Zombievers.
[0:16:09 – 0:16:10] Erik: That’s more shocking than Bill Burr.
[0:16:10 – 0:16:11] Adam: I know.
[0:16:11 – 0:16:13] Adam: Bill Burr is obviously Bill Burr.
[0:16:13 – 0:16:13] Erik: The musician?
[0:16:13 – 0:16:14] Erik: The guitarist?
[0:16:14 – 0:16:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:16:16 – 0:16:19] Adam: The lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead now, I think?
[0:16:19 – 0:16:21] Erik: Yeah, that’s how I always will remember him.
[0:16:22 – 0:16:22] Adam: Uh-huh.
[0:16:24 – 0:16:31] Adam: Dark star crashes, beaver in the ashes.
[0:16:31 – 0:16:34] Erik: Yeah, well, if you want to listen to us continue this conversation.
[0:16:34 – 0:16:36] Adam: You have to jump on over to the Patreon.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:37] Erik: Jump on Patreon.
[0:16:37 – 0:16:39] Adam: Shout out to our Patreons.
[0:16:39 – 0:16:40] Adam: We love you very much.
[0:16:40 – 0:16:41] Erik: Wet, wet teaser of…
[0:16:42 – 0:16:48] Erik: continued amazing content coming your way on the cinema classics, Zombievers.
[0:16:48 – 0:16:49] Adam: It’s great.
[0:16:49 – 0:16:50] Adam: Yeah, it’s great.
[0:16:51 – 0:16:54] Adam: That was a request and I think I promised on the…
[0:16:55 – 0:17:00] Erik: It was an almost immediate successful completion on that request request.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:01] Adam: Yeah, I got it right in there.
[0:17:01 – 0:17:03] Adam: See, it’s really unfair how that one works.
[0:17:03 – 0:17:06] Erik: Yeah, there’s people out there that have been clamoring for things for years.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:10] Adam: The person who requested the beach three years ago is still waiting patiently.
[0:17:10 – 0:17:12] Adam: So, you know, but watch out.
[0:17:13 – 0:17:14] Adam: You never know what’s going to happen.
[0:17:14 – 0:17:14] Erik: Look out.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:23] Adam: But we do need to probably hop on the whiteboard and clean it up a little bit because there’s a bunch of crap on there that nobody requested that’s been on there for three years.
[0:17:23 – 0:17:29] Adam: So maybe we need to revamp the whiteboard in the coming weeks here on Fat Bear Week here on Tumble Home.
[0:17:31 – 0:17:32] Adam: But it’s time to get to the bears.
[0:17:33 – 0:17:37] Erik: Oh, I forgot.
[0:17:38 – 0:17:39] Adam: Bears don’t actually growl.
[0:17:39 – 0:17:40] Adam: That’s only in the movies.
[0:17:41 – 0:17:43] Adam: They sort of just snuff and breathe funny.
[0:17:43 – 0:17:43] Adam: Snuff.
[0:17:45 – 0:17:46] Adam: They might clack their teeth at you.
[0:17:48 – 0:17:49] Adam: That’s what bears do.
[0:17:49 – 0:17:49] Adam: There it is.
[0:17:50 – 0:17:50] Adam: There we go.
[0:17:50 – 0:17:51] Adam: Clackers.
[0:17:51 – 0:17:54] Erik: All right, well, we’re not starting with AperVenture.
[0:17:54 – 0:17:55] Erik: Unfortunately.
[0:17:56 – 0:17:57] Adam: We always keep our promises.
[0:17:57 – 0:17:58] Erik: It’s not our fault.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:00] Erik: It’s nobody’s fault.
[0:18:00 – 0:18:02] Erik: Let’s just blame the algorithm.
[0:18:03 – 0:18:04] Erik: Thanks a lot, Reddit.
[0:18:04 – 0:18:10] Erik: Thanks a lot, Reddit, for your free platform that we’ve garnished years of content from.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:12] Erik: Beautiful.
[0:18:12 – 0:18:13] Erik: Ridiculous Finn.
[0:18:14 – 0:18:18] Erik: Starting off the bear chat.
[0:18:19 – 0:18:20] Erik: Conversation.
[0:18:20 – 0:18:21] Erik: Prepare for banter.
[0:18:22 – 0:18:25] Erik: Me and my buddy just came out of a loop through Gaskin on Monday.
[0:18:25 – 0:18:30] Erik: Afterwards, we stopped by the co-op to drop off our first ever sponsorship.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:31] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:18:32 – 0:18:38] Erik: In our discussion with Adam, I admitted to being a long-time consumer of the podcast, but not a contributor into the subreddit.
[0:18:38 – 0:18:43] Erik: So I guess now I can finally say long-time first-time.
[0:18:43 – 0:18:44] Erik: Huzzah.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:45] Erik: Huzzah, huzzah.
[0:18:46 – 0:18:50] Erik: No run-ins with Bear on this last wet and windy trip south of the Gunflint.
[0:18:50 – 0:18:53] Erik: Closest animal encounter was with a couple grouse.
[0:18:53 – 0:18:54] Erik: It’s always those grouse.
[0:18:54 – 0:19:01] Erik: Strutting through camp upon emerging from our tent, probably looking for refuge as a couple shotgun blasts were heard bright and early.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:02] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:19:03 – 0:19:06] Erik: Been coming up to the Bajuar since I was a tot in the early 70s.
[0:19:07 – 0:19:09] Erik: I turn 55 next week.
[0:19:09 – 0:19:09] Erik: Wow.
[0:19:10 – 0:19:13] Adam: That’s a long B-dub run.
[0:19:14 – 0:19:17] Adam: You are looking good for 55, gentlemen.
[0:19:17 – 0:19:18] Adam: Gentleman.
[0:19:18 – 0:19:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:19 – 0:19:25] Erik: The only run-in I’ve experienced with a bear came on a trip in July of 1984 when I was 15.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:37] Erik: I can pinpoint the month and year because the big news when we hit Ely coming out of the B-Dub was that Mondale had chosen Geraldine Ferraro as the first ever female vice presidential candidate.
[0:19:37 – 0:19:38] Adam: How’d that work out for him?
[0:19:39 – 0:19:39] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:43] Adam: God damn, Mondale, you beautiful bastard.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:52] Erik: On that trip, it was me, my dad, and my 23-year-old cousin doing a loop out of Moose Lake, heading over to Kakakabic via Ensign.
[0:19:53 – 0:19:54] Erik: That’s bear country.
[0:19:54 – 0:19:55] Erik: And then back down Knife.
[0:19:56 – 0:20:03] Erik: It was early in the trip, and from what I recall, we were camped on Fraser with my cousin and I sleeping in one tent and my dad in another.
[0:20:04 – 0:20:13] Erik: Early that morning, my cousin and I woke up to some rustling around the site, and all of a sudden, a nose pressed against the wall just inches from our heads.
[0:20:14 – 0:20:16] Erik: Detecting no food there, he sauntered away.
[0:20:17 – 0:20:23] Erik: Then he zeroed in on our food source as we soon heard some scratching in the distance.
[0:20:24 – 0:20:29] Erik: We poked our heads out of the tent to see a somewhat scrawny bear climbing up the tree holding our food pack.
[0:20:30 – 0:20:35] Erik: I yelled for my dad as the bear was reaching out from the trunk with his paw to try to snag his breakfast.
[0:20:36 – 0:20:41] Erik: My dad boldly emerged from his tent in his tighty-whities, picked up a rock the size of a grapefruit, and launched it at the bear.
[0:20:42 – 0:20:43] Adam: Yes.
[0:20:43 – 0:20:45] Erik: That’s classic dad move.
[0:20:45 – 0:20:45] Erik: Dad.
[0:20:46 – 0:20:46] Erik: Dad.
[0:20:47 – 0:20:47] Erik: Dad.
[0:20:47 – 0:20:56] Erik: He hit him square in the ribs, causing the little guy to let out a moan as he scrambled down the tree and rambled back into the woods.
[0:20:57 – 0:20:58] Erik: Oh, beautiful.
[0:20:58 – 0:20:58] Erik: Oh, God, yeah.
[0:20:59 – 0:21:04] Erik: About 10 minutes later, you can hear pots banging in the next campsite as the bear continues his rounds to score an easy meal.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:07] Adam: Yeah, sounds like your dad had a gun on him.
[0:21:08 – 0:21:09] Erik: Yeah, right.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:14] Erik: Over the years, I’ve exclusively hung our packs with multiple bags inside to keep the odor down.
[0:21:15 – 0:21:20] Erik: Keeping a clean camp and packing in mostly freeze-dried meals is the usual routine.
[0:21:21 – 0:21:22] Erik: And I use a two pulley system.
[0:21:23 – 0:21:24] Adam: We deal with these people with the pulleys.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:25] Erik: Pulleys, yeah.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:28] Erik: Walk and tackle systems and their chains and their assembly lines.
[0:21:28 – 0:21:30] Erik: We got to rethink some stuff, Eric.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:33] Erik: We’re just out here, just footloose, fancy free.
[0:21:34 – 0:21:35] Erik: Just kind of over there in the bushes.
[0:21:35 – 0:21:38] Adam: Yeah, tie the barrel to the tree with a twine.
[0:21:38 – 0:21:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:40 – 0:21:42] Erik: Is twine a simple machine?
[0:21:42 – 0:21:43] Erik: I don’t think so.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:50] Erik: Yeah, we got some two pulley systems and we’ll string between two trees if a hefty branch on a single tree is unavailable.
[0:21:50 – 0:21:55] Erik: However, this topic has me now researching the age-old debate between hanging and canisters.
[0:21:56 – 0:22:04] Erik: It’s those times when we get too focused on the bag of wine and ended up hanging the pack in the dark when I wish I was on the other side of the debate.
[0:22:05 – 0:22:10] Erik: Maybe a bear vault or ursack is in my future, especially when you come across videos like this.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:12] Adam: Oh, it’s a link, Eric.
[0:22:13 – 0:22:14] Erik: I’m not clicking that link.
[0:22:14 – 0:22:17] Erik: It’s going to try and get you to update your Adobe.
[0:22:17 – 0:22:18] Erik: I know it’s all it’s going to be.
[0:22:18 – 0:22:18] Erik: Yeah.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:22] Adam: Well, thank you for the comment.
[0:22:22 – 0:22:23] Adam: Thanks for stopping by.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:25] Adam: And damn, you don’t look a day over 42, sir.
[0:22:28 – 0:22:29] Adam: Way to keep it together.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:31] Adam: You’re looking like you’re in real good shape.
[0:22:32 – 0:22:37] Adam: I love the story about your dad smacking a bear in the ribs with a grapefruit-sized boulder.
[0:22:37 – 0:22:39] Erik: What a cannon on that dad.
[0:22:40 – 0:22:42] Erik: Standing like Hal from Malcolm in the Middle.
[0:22:43 – 0:22:45] Adam: And don’t even think about coming back.
[0:22:47 – 0:22:53] Adam: Next up on the show, a dear friend of the show, Include Me Out 2, 15 days ago.
[0:22:53 – 0:22:55] Adam: And it’s quite the comment.
[0:22:55 – 0:22:57] Adam: I can’t even see the wine count.
[0:22:57 – 0:22:58] Adam: That’s three.
[0:22:58 – 0:22:59] Adam: That’s three bags of wine.
[0:23:00 – 0:23:02] Adam: Three Ursa bags of wine on this one.
[0:23:02 – 0:23:03] Erik: Three Ursax.
[0:23:03 – 0:23:04] Adam: Ursax of wine.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:07] Adam: That’s worth two Franzias.
[0:23:08 – 0:23:09] Adam: If you’re counting at home.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:12] Erik: Three Ursax of wine is worth two Franzias in the bush?
[0:23:12 – 0:23:13] Adam: That’s the conversion.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:13] Adam: That’s right.
[0:23:14 – 0:23:16] Adam: Depends on if it’s a white or a blush wine.
[0:23:17 – 0:23:18] Erik: Or a buttery Chardonnay.
[0:23:18 – 0:23:20] Erik: Buttery Chardonnay.
[0:23:20 – 0:23:21] Adam: That’s the one the bear would go for.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:23] Adam: That one smells real good.
[0:23:23 – 0:23:26] Adam: Next up on the show, include me out to 15 days ago.
[0:23:28 – 0:23:34] Adam: A few weeks ago was the first time I’ve had bearish encounters, with this last trip being my seventh in total.
[0:23:34 – 0:23:37] Adam: We were on the border route from Gunflint to Bearskin.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:38] Adam: Bearskin.
[0:23:40 – 0:23:40] Erik: Bearskin.
[0:23:41 – 0:23:43] Adam: And spent two nights on Rose.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:47] Adam: The first night on Rose, we were at the furthest east campsite along the south shore.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:51] Adam: We heard some insane sounds right around dusk.
[0:23:52 – 0:23:57] Adam: Thought maybe it was a dying animal, but couldn’t pinpoint the sound location or animal to be honest.
[0:23:58 – 0:24:06] Adam: The next morning, we had planned to find a better site on Rose because we weren’t digging the massive downed trees that were blocking our lakeside view.
[0:24:06 – 0:24:11] Adam: So we packed up and then scoped out the rest of the campsites on that same shoreline.
[0:24:12 – 0:24:17] Adam: The site two doors down to the west had a whole story written on paper and placed on the fire grate.
[0:24:18 – 0:24:21] Adam: It told the tale of Brutus the Gerald.
[0:24:22 – 0:24:23] Adam: What?
[0:24:23 – 0:24:27] Adam: It told the tale of Brutus and Gerald.
[0:24:28 – 0:24:28] Adam: Sorry.
[0:24:29 – 0:24:31] Adam: Is it Gerald or Gerald, Eric?
[0:24:31 – 0:24:31] Adam: Gerald?
[0:24:32 – 0:24:33] Adam: Brutus and Gerald.
[0:24:33 – 0:24:33] Adam: What?
[0:24:35 – 0:24:37] Adam: The Neighborhood Bear and Camp Mouse.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:38] Adam: Oh, no.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:39] Adam: Hold on.
[0:24:39 – 0:24:40] Erik: What was the mouse’s name?
[0:24:40 – 0:24:46] Adam: It mentioned multiple night encounters of a bear in camp and a mouse that was terrorizing tents and backpacks.
[0:24:47 – 0:24:48] Adam: Brutus and Gerald.
[0:24:50 – 0:24:57] Adam: The note included multiple different groups’ run-ins and provided updates for potential campers, such as ourselves.
[0:24:58 – 0:25:04] Adam: For example, quote, no sign of Brutus last night, but Gerald tried sneaking into our tent.
[0:25:05 – 0:25:07] Erik: Is this supposed to be like Tom and Jerry?
[0:25:07 – 0:25:10] Adam: Tom was the cat and Jerry was the mouse.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:10] Adam: Right, yeah.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:16] Adam: One’s big and one’s small, and they’re both the real scallywags.
[0:25:18 – 0:25:22] Erik: I like this concept of having a running log of the bear and mouse activity.
[0:25:22 – 0:25:24] Adam: You get this in cabins you might rent.
[0:25:24 – 0:25:25] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:28] Adam: And it’s like, oh, let’s check the little cabin notebook here.
[0:25:28 – 0:25:31] Adam: And it’s like, oh, somebody from Pakistan stayed here.
[0:25:31 – 0:25:32] Adam: Interesting.
[0:25:32 – 0:25:33] Erik: They saw the Northern Lights.
[0:25:34 – 0:25:35] Erik: They saw the Northern Lights.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:59] Adam: christian berkland the campers from the previous night must not have had a writing utensil with them and decided their best alternative was writing barren camp last night 8 31 with ash from the fire on the camp furniture log god we saw this this was uh posted we decided not to stay there and pushed west mostly after reading about gerald the mouse
[0:26:00 – 0:26:06] Adam: who sounded like a real nuisance, and who wants to stare at a finger-painted bobby log with ominous messages.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:07] Adam: Not me.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:22] Adam: We ended up choosing the site closest to the stairway portage, also on the south shore, accepting our fate that this campsite must also get a visit from Brutus, but at least wouldn’t have Gerald rummaging around.
[0:26:23 – 0:26:27] Adam: We spent the day on the border route trail exploring the stairway portage, falls, and overlooks.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:36] Adam: Every group we encountered was either telling us about other groups’ bear encounters from the previous night or asking if we had any run-ins.
[0:26:36 – 0:26:44] Adam: The people we encountered were clearly day trippers who felt wanted to be happy about their decisions not to be camping out there in the woods with the bears.
[0:26:45 – 0:26:53] Adam: It sounded from the day tripper’s secondhand stories that three different groups and rows had their food packs stolen and pillaged by bears.
[0:26:54 – 0:26:54] Adam: Jesus.
[0:26:55 – 0:27:02] Adam: One tale mentioned the group had hung their food packs perfectly and that the bear just decided to simply knock the entire tree over at its trunk.
[0:27:02 – 0:27:03] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:27:03 – 0:27:04] Adam: Brutus.
[0:27:05 – 0:27:06] Adam: Brutus.
[0:27:06 – 0:27:06] Erik: Brutus.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:10] Erik: I feel like a party horn is warranted here.
[0:27:11 – 0:27:12] Erik: And Gerald.
[0:27:12 – 0:27:13] Erik: Don’t forget him by Gerald.
[0:27:14 – 0:27:16] Adam: Gerald’s such a sweetheart, though.
[0:27:17 – 0:27:18] Erik: I just want to go in your tent.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:27] Adam: Another tale spoke of a group double portaging stairway and having their pack stolen by a bear at the Duncan Landing while heading towards Rose.
[0:27:28 – 0:27:36] Adam: We later decided that we wished we didn’t have any of these conversations about the past 24 hours worth of bear stories by proxy.
[0:27:38 – 0:27:48] Adam: After our day of exploring the area, we returned to camp and decided to eat an early dinner, mainly so that we had some daylight left over and could make sure that we had cleaned up properly.
[0:27:48 – 0:27:57] Adam: We used ursacks with Ziploc liners and put them about eye level on a tree a few hundred feet in the woods, fully expecting them to be somewhere else the next morning.
[0:27:59 – 0:28:09] Adam: The next morning we were shocked to see our ursax untouched and then left the park by way of the stairway portage and gave no warnings about bears to any of the people we passed heading the opposite direction.
[0:28:09 – 0:28:10] Adam: Poor suckers.
[0:28:11 – 0:28:27] Adam: Coming full circle on the noises we heard the previous night, I believe they were the cubs moaning for their mother bear while she was off messing with everyone else’s campsites and potentially getting threatened with fire wizard tales or other insults about their mom.
[0:28:27 – 0:28:28] Adam: The end.
[0:28:29 – 0:28:29] Adam: Wow.
[0:28:29 – 0:28:30] Adam: Wow, what a story.
[0:28:30 – 0:28:31] Adam: What a tale.
[0:28:31 – 0:28:32] Adam: Brutus and Gerald.
[0:28:32 – 0:28:34] Erik: Brutus and Gerald.
[0:28:35 – 0:28:37] Adam: That’s not the episode title.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:38] Adam: I don’t even know what we’re doing here.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:41] Erik: There’s a theme song to be written and a cartoon to be drawn there.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:44] Adam: Brutus and Geralt.
[0:28:44 – 0:28:45] Adam: I’m sorry.
[0:28:45 – 0:28:46] Adam: Geralt.
[0:28:46 – 0:28:47] Adam: Definitely Gerald.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:49] Adam: I definitely screwed that up very badly.
[0:28:50 – 0:28:52] Adam: Oh, Aperventure is coming up here, I can see.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:52] Adam: There we go.
[0:28:53 – 0:28:57] Adam: I scrolled up for you, but we got a couple before Aperventure somehow.
[0:28:57 – 0:29:01] Adam: I don’t understand how any of this works, but that was an excellent story.
[0:29:02 – 0:29:07] Adam: And I do remember somebody posted the picture of the bobby log with the message in ash.
[0:29:08 – 0:29:09] Adam: Bear in camp last night.
[0:29:09 – 0:29:10] Adam: Beware.
[0:29:12 – 0:29:12] Adam: 831.
[0:29:16 – 0:29:18] Erik: No ghosts in the machine.
[0:29:18 – 0:29:22] Adam: No, the demons are at bay, just like Brutus that night.
[0:29:23 – 0:29:24] Adam: And, uh…
[0:29:24 – 0:29:29] Adam: While we were checking for the demons, I was rummaging around in the ursack over here.
[0:29:29 – 0:29:30] Adam: And, uh…
[0:29:31 – 0:29:39] Adam: There’s a note also with the beautiful frisbees and delicious beers.
[0:29:39 – 0:29:41] Adam: Thank you, gents, for the great show.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:43] Adam: Please enjoy some discs and beer.
[0:29:44 – 0:29:46] Adam: You can decide who gets what disc.
[0:29:46 – 0:29:49] Adam: If you’re ever out for a round in the cities, hit me up.
[0:29:50 – 0:29:50] Adam: Isle of Pines.
[0:29:51 – 0:29:55] Adam: And there’s some nice pines on aisles doodled there on the bottom.
[0:29:55 – 0:29:56] Erik: Isles of Pines.
[0:29:56 – 0:29:58] Adam: Thank you, Isle of Pine.
[0:29:58 – 0:30:00] Adam: And, yeah, we…
[0:30:01 – 0:30:03] Adam: We played around with Isle of Pines.
[0:30:04 – 0:30:05] Adam: That’s right.
[0:30:05 – 0:30:07] Adam: I can’t think of the name of the course.
[0:30:07 – 0:30:07] Adam: It was a beautiful course.
[0:30:07 – 0:30:10] Adam: You ran into them randomly, though.
[0:30:10 – 0:30:10] Adam: Randomly.
[0:30:10 – 0:30:12] Adam: Like, are you Adam from Dumble Home?
[0:30:12 – 0:30:14] Adam: Yeah, that’s so weird.
[0:30:14 – 0:30:15] Adam: And yeah, watch me make this putt.
[0:30:16 – 0:30:17] Adam: You’re darn tootin’.
[0:30:17 – 0:30:21] Erik: Yeah, just watch me make this putt, and then I’ll tell you.
[0:30:21 – 0:30:22] Adam: Yeah, all right.
[0:30:22 – 0:30:22] Adam: I am.
[0:30:23 – 0:30:24] Erik: Now it’s in the pond.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:28] Adam: It looks like there might be some northern lights out there right now, too.
[0:30:28 – 0:30:31] Adam: I just took a peek out the shed, and there’s a glow to the north.
[0:30:31 – 0:30:33] Erik: There’s no Pakistanis out there, are there?
[0:30:34 – 0:30:34] Erik: It might be.
[0:30:35 – 0:30:36] Erik: It’s all connected.
[0:30:38 – 0:30:39] Erik: I’m going to read a couple here.
[0:30:39 – 0:30:40] Erik: Short one, long one.
[0:30:41 – 0:30:42] Erik: Amateur camper.
[0:30:43 – 0:30:45] Erik: I’ve never had a yogi in camp.
[0:30:45 – 0:30:46] Erik: We use bear vaults.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:49] Erik: Gives me more peace of mind.
[0:30:50 – 0:30:54] Erik: I was using the PCT, that’s the Pacific Crest Trail if I am not mistaken.
[0:30:54 – 0:30:55] Erik: You got it, I think, yeah.
[0:30:55 – 0:31:01] Erik: Method of hanging for a while, but I had always struggled to find a good empty branch to do it properly.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:03] Erik: And it was the last thing I’d want to do at night.
[0:31:04 – 0:31:06] Erik: Plus, very few options to hang in burn areas.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:10] Erik: Our barrels are packed like Russian nesting dolls.
[0:31:10 – 0:31:15] Erik: Ziplocs inside of Ziplocs inside of… More Ziplocs.
[0:31:17 – 0:31:18] Adam: Aimed by using spells.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:22] Erik: Inside of a confounding spell.
[0:31:22 – 0:31:25] Adam: How dare you use my own spell against me?
[0:31:26 – 0:31:27] Adam: Snape’s not happy.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:31] Erik: All right.
[0:31:32 – 0:31:35] Erik: From bears to apes, it’s Ape-R Venture.
[0:31:36 – 0:31:38] Erik: Yes, he starts.
[0:31:38 – 0:31:39] Erik: Or they.
[0:31:39 – 0:31:40] Adam: They start.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:41] Erik: Yes, comma.
[0:31:42 – 0:31:45] Erik: Food was hung from a barrel and was fine.
[0:31:46 – 0:31:48] Erik: Stove was on rocks by the fire.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:55] Erik: It’s its filet frying spot and got injured the first time.
[0:31:57 – 0:31:57] Erik: Okay.
[0:31:58 – 0:31:59] Erik: I’m following along.
[0:32:00 – 0:32:00] Erik: I see.
[0:32:02 – 0:32:04] Erik: No stove injuries the second time.
[0:32:06 – 0:32:12] Erik: Bear was in camp twice, and it is uncertain if said bear will ever return to a campsite again.
[0:32:12 – 0:32:14] Erik: That’s cryptic.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:21] Erik: I don’t know exactly what happened, but it sounded like maybe a bear was involved in some kind of a stove accident and was injured.
[0:32:21 – 0:32:23] Adam: Maybe they pulled your trick.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:24] Adam: Laid the stove in charge.
[0:32:24 – 0:32:28] Erik: At which the bear will never end up in a campsite ever again.
[0:32:29 – 0:32:30] Adam: Send him to the nether.
[0:32:30 – 0:32:34] Erik: While this story continues, we had another successful day of fishing on Ensign.
[0:32:36 – 0:32:38] Erik: Is this you from the past, Eric?
[0:32:39 – 0:32:43] Erik: Yeah, this is all the twists and turns, some interesting narrative.
[0:32:43 – 0:32:44] Erik: I’m on the edge of my seat.
[0:32:45 – 0:32:46] Erik: Another successful day of fishing.
[0:32:46 – 0:32:47] Adam: We didn’t hear about the first one.
[0:32:48 – 0:32:49] Erik: I’m so intrigued.
[0:32:49 – 0:32:53] Erik: As you know, it’s one of the least known fishing gems of the BWCA.
[0:32:53 – 0:32:59] Erik: And the lengthy journey to arrive was increased by the white caps on moose for the tow-in.
[0:33:00 – 0:33:06] Erik: First day of fishing success after the grueling paddling in, comma, we slept like belly full.
[0:33:06 – 0:33:07] Erik: With belly full.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:11] Adam: No S. Is this a David Foster Wallace novel?
[0:33:11 – 0:33:12] Adam: What’s going on right now?
[0:33:13 – 0:33:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:19] Erik: The next morning, a breakfast of stick-to-your-throat tube oatmeal sprinkled with M&Ms.
[0:33:19 – 0:33:21] Erik: Okay, now you’re speaking my language.
[0:33:21 – 0:33:23] Adam: Now it’s all making sense.
[0:33:23 – 0:33:27] Erik: It was only made palatable by drips of the leftover boxed wine.
[0:33:27 – 0:33:28] Erik: Yes.
[0:33:28 – 0:33:30] Erik: Groggy, we paddled for another day of fishing.
[0:33:34 – 0:33:44] Erik: We came back to camp at night with stringers bulging and stomachs growling, only to find a strange, the metal grate strewn about the landing.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:47] Erik: Are you okay?
[0:33:48 – 0:33:50] Erik: Am I having a stroke?
[0:33:52 – 0:33:53] Erik: What could this be?
[0:33:54 – 0:33:58] Erik: Had someone come to our camp and left their cooking grate while they cooked lunch in our camp?
[0:33:59 – 0:34:01] Erik: Okay, so I guess I’m piecing it together now.
[0:34:01 – 0:34:07] Erik: Only to find a strange metal grate strewn about the landing.
[0:34:07 – 0:34:09] Erik: So like, yeah, one of those loose ones that you can pack.
[0:34:10 – 0:34:11] Erik: Strange grate.
[0:34:11 – 0:34:15] Erik: A strange grate strewn about the landing.
[0:34:16 – 0:34:18] Erik: Then we saw a devastating sight.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:25] Erik: I can’t tell if I am loving this or…
[0:34:25 – 0:34:25] Erik: I love it.
[0:34:26 – 0:34:27] Erik: I love it.
[0:34:27 – 0:34:30] Erik: My father’s… My father in his underwear.
[0:34:32 – 0:34:33] Erik: Grapefruit-sized rock.
[0:34:33 – 0:34:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:34 – 0:34:40] Erik: My father’s antique white gas Coleman stove was thrown to the ground and its faded green frame slightly bent.
[0:34:42 – 0:34:48] Erik: As we saw the red fuel bleeding across the dirt, we considered asking Exxon how best to clean up.
[0:34:49 – 0:34:58] Erik: However, our bellies were growling and we forgot as we searched for the missing side panel only to found it bent into a taco towards the woods.
[0:34:59 – 0:35:00] Erik: The likely getaway route.
[0:35:03 – 0:35:04] Erik: Brain’s foggy.
[0:35:05 – 0:35:12] Erik: It all began to make sense as my dad inspected his heirloom, only to find it clean as new.
[0:35:13 – 0:35:13] Erik: The bear.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:20] Erik: Punctuation and capitalization is slowly fading.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:28] Erik: We put the stove back together and finally deep fried more fillets, and after more boxed wine, it became clear what to do.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:35] Erik: The old-timers told us that once bears are habituated, they only return to do the same.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:36] Adam: That’s true.
[0:35:36 – 0:35:37] Adam: They have great memories.
[0:35:37 – 0:35:40] Erik: They believed that we needed to rehabilitate this bear.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:41] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:43] Erik: And get it back to clean living.
[0:35:44 – 0:35:46] Erik: Who are we to argue with experience?
[0:35:47 – 0:35:51] Erik: Another of the experienced sort was having the time living in Louisiana.
[0:35:53 – 0:35:59] Erik: Was at the time living in Louisiana and had bumper year of hot peppers.
[0:36:03 – 0:36:06] Erik: Whataburger Invitational.
[0:36:06 – 0:36:06] Erik: Was this typed up?
[0:36:07 – 0:36:12] Erik: Well groggy on wine from some device in the Boundary Waters.
[0:36:12 – 0:36:16] Erik: Enjoying Story M. We put the scope back.
[0:36:16 – 0:36:17] Adam: Okay.
[0:36:18 – 0:36:30] Erik: Another of the experienced sort was at the time living in Louisiana and had bumper year of hot peppers that were grown below the lollipop pine trees in his backyard.
[0:36:30 – 0:36:31] Erik: Yeah, of course.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:32 – 0:36:39] Erik: He had so many if filled a gallon Ziploc bag for seizing over the weekend, the week long trip.
[0:36:40 – 0:36:41] Erik: We eviscerated every pepper.
[0:36:42 – 0:36:45] Erik: I love that there’s just like the words.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:48] Erik: We eviscerated every pepper.
[0:36:48 – 0:36:49] Erik: This is high art.
[0:36:49 – 0:36:56] Erik: Put the seeds in the leftover fry oil and placed it with a few pepper.
[0:36:56 – 0:37:00] Erik: I’ve never been so confounded by reading in my life.
[0:37:01 – 0:37:08] Erik: And placed it with a few pepper morsels and some crackers in an easy to access tin cup in the middle of camp.
[0:37:08 – 0:37:09] Erik: Trying to do like a hot one or something?
[0:37:09 – 0:37:28] Erik: this bear yeah i guess they’re hot wanting this bear they got them yeah jennifer lawrence is crying in the morning the oil was gone but not what now in the morning the oil was gone but not all the peppers i never did have bear troubles for the rest of the week
[0:37:30 – 0:37:31] Erik: Capsicames.
[0:37:31 – 0:37:33] Erik: The heirloom stove is still in use.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:34] Erik: All right.
[0:37:34 – 0:37:36] Erik: Bent side panel and all.
[0:37:36 – 0:37:40] Adam: Yeah, for, you know, white gas.
[0:37:40 – 0:37:41] Adam: The end.
[0:37:41 – 0:37:42] Adam: The end of that one.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:44] Adam: Then that’s the end of that story, Eric.
[0:37:45 – 0:37:46] Adam: You made it.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:50] Adam: How do you pronounce the active ingredient in the dog blaster?
[0:37:51 – 0:37:51] Erik: Capuchin.
[0:37:52 – 0:37:53] Adam: I apparently screwed it up.
[0:37:54 – 0:37:57] Adam: Hopalicious called me on it, and I said, Capation?
[0:37:57 – 0:37:58] Adam: It’s Capsicum.
[0:37:58 – 0:37:59] Erik: Capsicum.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:00] Adam: Screwed up bad.
[0:38:01 – 0:38:09] Erik: I own my mistake, but they did like a severe hot ones Capsicum, the homemade dog blaster in a can.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:22] Erik: Homemade dog blaster in a can with a bumper crop of eviscerated heirloom peppers grown under the old lol blolly pine trees in the backyard in Louisiana.
[0:38:22 – 0:38:24] Adam: Don’t mess with my old starve.
[0:38:25 – 0:38:26] Adam: Starves don’t appreciate.
[0:38:26 – 0:38:31] Erik: I can’t tell if I want you to write more or give it up forever.
[0:38:31 – 0:38:32] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:33] Adam: I got a taste.
[0:38:34 – 0:38:34] Adam: I need more.
[0:38:35 – 0:38:37] Erik: I think I want more, actually.
[0:38:37 – 0:38:46] Adam: Maybe that’s why the Tomahomies sunk that one down to the middle of the show on purpose, just to make sure we were ready for it.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:49] Adam: Can you imagine starting the show with that?
[0:38:49 – 0:38:55] Erik: Yeah, I can’t tell if people would tune in or, again, want more.
[0:38:55 – 0:38:59] Erik: I’m on the fence, but leaning towards… Yeah, I’m visibly excited.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:04] Erik: Aper Venture, we need more comments from you in the future, I think.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:07] Adam: Yeah, I’m thinking you got a bright future.
[0:39:11 – 0:39:14] Adam: You got a bright future just like these soft lake fellows.
[0:39:15 – 0:39:16] Adam: Soft lake fellows.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:16] Adam: Softest.
[0:39:18 – 0:39:20] Adam: It’s all coming together, juicy and soft.
[0:39:20 – 0:39:21] Adam: Nelson.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:21] Erik: Nelson.
[0:39:22 – 0:39:29] Adam: You got the stove dented and sideways and the peppers of the hibernaculum trees.
[0:39:29 – 0:39:33] Erik: What was the information about the randomly strewn grate that somebody left?
[0:39:33 – 0:39:34] Erik: That’s just a mystery?
[0:39:34 – 0:39:35] Adam: Well, maybe the bear brought it.
[0:39:35 – 0:39:36] Adam: Just a buried mystery?
[0:39:37 – 0:39:40] Adam: Bear brought it down before they just…
[0:39:40 – 0:39:42] Adam: It’s a leave a grate, destroy a grate kind of scenario.
[0:39:42 – 0:39:44] Erik: It’s all red herring if this is a mystery.
[0:39:44 – 0:39:44] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:39:45 – 0:39:48] Adam: I’m excited and I want to know more.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:52] Adam: Once again, Ensign, where the memories are made.
[0:39:53 – 0:39:53] Erik: I guess.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:56] Erik: The old lollipop pine tree.
[0:39:56 – 0:39:57] Adam: I never heard of that kind of pine.
[0:39:59 – 0:40:00] Adam: We need to diversify our forests.
[0:40:01 – 0:40:03] Adam: We need some wild lollies coming up here.
[0:40:03 – 0:40:06] Erik: I’m going to start planting some lollipop lollies to eviscerate some peppers underneath.
[0:40:06 – 0:40:07] Erik: Absolutely, yeah.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:09] Erik: In the full moonlight of the bayou.
[0:40:10 – 0:40:12] Adam: In the full moonlight.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:15] Adam: Next up on the show, the white pine.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:16] Adam: Wow.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:17] Adam: 13 days ago.
[0:40:17 – 0:40:18] Adam: Not lolly bolly pines.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:20] Adam: This is the white pine.
[0:40:22 – 0:40:27] Adam: First time I went into the BWCA, we entered in at Sawbill and stayed at Beth Lake.
[0:40:28 – 0:40:34] Adam: The first full day, we had a ranger stop in the camp to check permits and if our campsite was being kept clean and tidy.
[0:40:35 – 0:40:37] Adam: The ranger had received word that
[0:40:38 – 0:40:44] Adam: That the day prior, a group had encountered a bear while paddling toward the campsite across the bay from our site.
[0:40:44 – 0:40:51] Adam: The bear could see the iconic tasty blue barrel in the canoe and proceeded to swim up to the canoe to get it.
[0:40:52 – 0:40:52] Adam: Wow.
[0:40:53 – 0:40:56] Adam: From what I remember, they eventually scared it away.
[0:40:56 – 0:41:01] Adam: I’m guessing they threw insults at its mother and then decided to exit the park that evening.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:10] Adam: We never had an encounter with the troublemaker, although on our way out, we did find where the bear had stolen a pack at the end of the portage.
[0:41:10 – 0:41:14] Adam: We found food wrappers scattered leading back into the woods.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:19] Adam: We cleaned it up, including finding the shredded pack a little ways back in the woods.
[0:41:20 – 0:41:21] Adam: Five boxes of wine.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:21] Adam: Thank you.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:22] Adam: 1863.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:22] Adam: White pine, 1863.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:23] Erik: Thank you.
[0:41:23 – 0:41:24] Erik: I’m going to keep going.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:25] Adam: You do it.
[0:41:31 – 0:41:40] Adam: Got one coming up here from dearest friend and fellow Wabakimi future paddler of the show, Hopalicious.
[0:41:40 – 0:41:41] Adam: Oh, Hopalicious.
[0:41:41 – 0:41:42] Adam: 13 days ago.
[0:41:44 – 0:41:46] Adam: Eight trips, five trips to Ensign.
[0:41:46 – 0:41:47] Adam: I’ve never had a barren camp.
[0:41:47 – 0:41:54] Adam: Perhaps I am lucky, but I hang my food about 30 paces outside camp on the best tree I can find.
[0:41:54 – 0:41:58] Adam: Other times, I just walk the pack 30 paces outside of camp and left it there.
[0:41:59 – 0:42:02] Erik: Is that a Louisiana pace or a Minnesota pace?
[0:42:02 – 0:42:05] Adam: That’s a lollygaggity pine pace.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:09] Adam: My last trip was my first trip with a blue bear barrel.
[0:42:10 – 0:42:13] Adam: I also brought one of those curly wire bike locks.
[0:42:14 – 0:42:14] Erik: Okay.
[0:42:15 – 0:42:15] Adam: Yes.
[0:42:16 – 0:42:21] Adam: I walked the barrel 30 paces outside the camp and bike locked it to a thick tree.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:23] Adam: So far, so good.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:24] Adam: The end.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:27] Adam: Curly bike locks.
[0:42:28 – 0:42:33] Adam: And not enough people, Eric, are describing distances and paces.
[0:42:33 – 0:42:34] Erik: I love it.
[0:42:34 – 0:42:36] Erik: And bike locks is curly and white.
[0:42:36 – 0:42:36] Adam: Curly.
[0:42:36 – 0:42:39] Adam: I know exactly what you’re talking about, though.
[0:42:39 – 0:42:40] Adam: This one makes a lot of sense.
[0:42:41 – 0:42:41] Erik: Clear as day.
[0:42:41 – 0:42:42] Erik: Cape Venture.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:44] Erik: You got to get together with the Hopalicious here.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:44] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:42:45 – 0:42:47] Erik: No, actually, you keep doing you.
[0:42:48 – 0:42:48] Adam: Both of you.
[0:42:49 – 0:42:50] Adam: Thank you for the comment, Hopalicious.
[0:42:51 – 0:42:52] Adam: We love you dearly.
[0:42:52 – 0:42:55] Adam: And I’m going to start describing things more often in paces.
[0:42:56 – 0:42:57] Adam: I like stepping it off.
[0:42:57 – 0:42:58] Adam: I love stepping it off.
[0:42:59 – 0:43:00] Adam: Step off.
[0:43:00 – 0:43:01] Adam: Stepping it off.
[0:43:01 – 0:43:03] Adam: 30 paces is the key, though.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:03] Adam: That’s what we found.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:04] Adam: 30 paces.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:07] Adam: That’s 10 meters.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:08] Erik: Yeah.
[0:43:09 – 0:43:10] Erik: Depends on how long your legs are.
[0:43:11 – 0:43:15] Adam: It’s the paces are in the length of the stride.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:15] Erik: Is that metric?
[0:43:16 – 0:43:17] Erik: I think so.
[0:43:17 – 0:43:22] Erik: We got Highway J, H, Way, H, Y, H, W, Y, J.
[0:43:22 – 0:43:23] Erik: All right.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:23] Erik: I’m jangled.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:24] Erik: I’m rattled.
[0:43:24 – 0:43:25] Erik: Let’s see if I can come back.
[0:43:25 – 0:43:26] Adam: Get it.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:27] Adam: He’s got it.
[0:43:27 – 0:43:28] Adam: You got it in you.
[0:43:28 – 0:43:29] Adam: He got it.
[0:43:30 – 0:43:33] Erik: Short answer is no bears have been in my own camp.
[0:43:33 – 0:43:34] Erik: All right, moving on.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:39] Erik: But I have had a handful of encounters with the Duncan slash Rose Bear.
[0:43:40 – 0:43:40] Erik: Uh-oh.
[0:43:40 – 0:43:41] Erik: Gerald the mouse.
[0:43:42 – 0:43:44] Adam: Brutus strikes back.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:45] Erik: Brutus.
[0:43:46 – 0:43:54] Erik: The summer of 2021, my family of four was camped with our friends and their two kids on Duncan just before the BWCA was closed.
[0:43:54 – 0:43:56] Erik: 2021.
[0:43:56 – 0:43:57] Adam: Because of the fires?
[0:43:58 – 0:43:58] Adam: Because of the fires.
[0:43:58 – 0:43:59] Adam: Because of the fires.
[0:44:00 – 0:44:01] Adam: Oh, I thought that was for the virus.
[0:44:02 – 0:44:03] Adam: Because of the virus.
[0:44:03 – 0:44:04] Erik: Because of the virus.
[0:44:04 – 0:44:05] Erik: They didn’t close the Bajor because of the virus.
[0:44:06 – 0:44:07] Erik: Because of the virus.
[0:44:07 – 0:44:07] Erik: Because of the virus.
[0:44:08 – 0:44:15] Erik: I knew it was a bear-prone area, but our friends are a bit less experienced, and Duncan offers a lot of day trip greatness.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:16] Erik: It does.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:18] Erik: With not too much effort to get in.
[0:44:18 – 0:44:19] Erik: So, it fit the bill.
[0:44:20 – 0:44:26] Erik: We made sure to stay as far south as possible and ended up on a site that’s out on the West Point.
[0:44:26 – 0:44:27] Erik: Oh, that one.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:28] Erik: Oh, that one.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:29] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:44:30 – 0:44:30] Adam: Oh, no.
[0:44:31 – 0:44:34] Adam: That’s Gerald’s favorite.
[0:44:35 – 0:44:37] Erik: I typically use a bare barrel and a bike lock.
[0:44:37 – 0:44:38] Erik: The curly kind.
[0:44:38 – 0:45:05] Erik: oh no what is going on right now lock it to a tree well outside camp but with a habituated bear in the area i decided to hang it on that trip should have rubbed a little pepper juice on it yeah just do everything capsications we got some parentheticals here which was awful when there’s an entire family stash of food inside but somehow i got that beast up in the air and could have used a pulley maybe
[0:45:05 – 0:45:07] Erik: Yeah, get your block and tackle systems going.
[0:45:08 – 0:45:15] Erik: On our day trip to the falls, we saw the bear walking the shoreline from the portage towards the site, first site nearby.
[0:45:16 – 0:45:21] Erik: There was a family having lunch there, so I paddled back and shouted to them, there’s a critter of concern headed your way.
[0:45:22 – 0:45:23] Erik: Critter of concern.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:25] Erik: Critter of concern.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:26] Adam: Point of law.
[0:45:26 – 0:45:26] Adam: Point of law.
[0:45:26 – 0:45:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:45:30 – 0:45:31] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:45:31 – 0:45:32] Erik: I disagree, attorney.
[0:45:33 – 0:45:33] Erik: Counselor.
[0:45:34 – 0:45:35] Erik: I didn’t want to freak out their kids.
[0:45:35 – 0:45:36] Adam: Yeah, there we go.
[0:45:36 – 0:45:37] Erik: That’s nice.
[0:45:37 – 0:45:38] Erik: It’s a critter of concern.
[0:45:38 – 0:45:39] Adam: Critter of concern.
[0:45:39 – 0:45:42] Erik: You might want to, you know, tally-ho.
[0:45:42 – 0:45:43] Erik: Tally-ho.
[0:45:43 – 0:45:43] Erik: Tut-tut.
[0:45:46 – 0:45:47] Erik: We talked to a couple on Rose.
[0:45:47 – 0:45:52] Erik: They said they could hear the pot banging sounds from camp to camp the previous night.
[0:45:53 – 0:45:53] Erik: Not good.
[0:45:54 – 0:45:58] Erik: That evening, I heard shouting and pots banging at the site north of our camp.
[0:45:58 – 0:46:02] Erik: I sat on our shoreline to watch and see how it was going.
[0:46:03 – 0:46:07] Erik: After putting up some resistance, the campers finally pushed off in their canoes.
[0:46:07 – 0:46:07] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:46:07 – 0:46:08] Erik: Night leave.
[0:46:08 – 0:46:09] Erik: I watched the bear chase them.
[0:46:09 – 0:46:10] Erik: What?
[0:46:10 – 0:46:11] Erik: Right up to the shoreline.
[0:46:12 – 0:46:20] Erik: They were pretty freaked out, so we allowed them to join us in our camp, but I told them they had to put their food on the island to the south.
[0:46:20 – 0:46:21] Adam: Unless they got a good bike lock.
[0:46:21 – 0:46:26] Erik: Yeah, curly bike lock, because it was getting dark and there wouldn’t be time to get it properly hung.
[0:46:27 – 0:46:31] Erik: Last week, I was back in the area, this time through hiking the border route.
[0:46:31 – 0:46:36] Erik: Lots of bear sign above Clearwater on the trail, but no Bruno to be seen.
[0:46:37 – 0:46:38] Erik: Brutus.
[0:46:38 – 0:46:39] Erik: Bruntos.
[0:46:39 – 0:46:40] Erik: Bruto.
[0:46:40 – 0:46:40] Erik: Bruto.
[0:46:41 – 0:46:44] Erik: I planned our mileage to assure we wouldn’t be camped on rows.
[0:46:45 – 0:46:54] Erik: We had planned to stay on the west’s Clearwater site, but it was occupied when we got there around 6 p.m., and they showed no interest in sharing with a couple of worn-out backpackers.
[0:46:55 – 0:46:56] Adam: Boo.
[0:46:57 – 0:47:02] Erik: So, with little daylight left, we filled water and went up into the woods and camped off the trail.
[0:47:02 – 0:47:03] Erik: No critter issues.
[0:47:04 – 0:47:06] Erik: We ran into our kid’s bus driver, who was head…
[0:47:10 – 0:47:13] Erik: We ran into our kid’s bus driver who was heading the opposite direction of us.
[0:47:13 – 0:47:14] Adam: Sounds like CIA.
[0:47:15 – 0:47:16] Adam: Small world, right?
[0:47:16 – 0:47:16] Adam: Yeah.
[0:47:16 – 0:47:16] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:47:16 – 0:47:18] Adam: Kid’s bus driver.
[0:47:18 – 0:47:19] Adam: Is that code?
[0:47:20 – 0:47:23] Erik: He had camped on Rose West the night before.
[0:47:24 – 0:47:29] Erik: Sure enough, they found a bear ripping away at their ersacker on 10 p.m. after they had turned in for the night.
[0:47:30 – 0:47:37] Erik: On their way east the next morning, the campers in the neighboring Rose Lake east site said that they had a bear come into camp during breakfast that day.
[0:47:38 – 0:47:44] Erik: So it would seem this bear continues to be quite active in the sites around Duncan and Rose day and night.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:57] Erik: I have no trouble camping in bear country where it doesn’t take much to startle a bear away from camp, but I’m not too interested in camping at a site where a habituated bear visits on a daily basis or even multiple times a night.
[0:47:57 – 0:47:58] Adam: Is this bear wearing like a hat?
[0:47:59 – 0:48:04] Adam: And I’m thinking like Gerald the mouse is like inside the hat, kind of like a Ratatouille situation.
[0:48:04 – 0:48:05] Erik: Controlling the bear?
[0:48:05 – 0:48:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:48:06 – 0:48:09] Adam: Let’s go down there and see if they got any biters.
[0:48:09 – 0:48:12] Erik: Grabbing the hairs to move the arms and stuff.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:17] Adam: Maybe if we roast the eggplant just so, we’ll have fond memories.
[0:48:17 – 0:48:18] Erik: Fond memories.
[0:48:18 – 0:48:20] Adam: Fond memories, Brutus.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:23] Adam: Brutus is like, mm-hmm, I agree.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:27] Erik: Yeah, I definitely can echo the sentiment.
[0:48:27 – 0:48:30] Erik: All these, this rose, Duncan, Clearwater,
[0:48:30 – 0:48:36] Erik: They were not nearly as prevalent as they were my last few years at Clearwater.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:37] Erik: Getting pretty bold.
[0:48:37 – 0:48:41] Erik: I’m not that interested in camping in any of these bogus Brutus and Gerald scenes.
[0:48:41 – 0:48:43] Erik: This sounds terrible.
[0:48:43 – 0:48:50] Erik: I’m going to head on over to Arrow or avoid the area completely at this point.
[0:48:50 – 0:48:51] Erik: There we go.
[0:48:51 – 0:48:51] Adam: Go to Baker.
[0:48:51 – 0:48:53] Erik: It’s an infestation.
[0:48:55 – 0:48:59] Erik: Where’s these guys back in the 80s that were blasting scalps off of them with buckshot?
[0:48:59 – 0:49:01] Erik: We need these guys out there again.
[0:49:01 – 0:49:02] Erik: We need the buckshot crew.
[0:49:03 – 0:49:09] Erik: Or we need the old capsaicin lollipop boys to get over and hot ones them.
[0:49:10 – 0:49:12] Adam: Gotta give them the hot ones.
[0:49:12 – 0:49:14] Erik: Why would you do this to me?
[0:49:14 – 0:49:15] Erik: This is terrible.
[0:49:16 – 0:49:21] Adam: Yeah, I’m liking the idea of pulling a prank and pulling the hot ones on these bears.
[0:49:21 – 0:49:22] Adam: Bear pranks.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:26] Adam: Yeah, just coat your ursack in habaneros.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:29] Adam: Eh?
[0:49:30 – 0:49:30] Erik: Eh?
[0:49:30 – 0:49:31] Erik: I think so.
[0:49:32 – 0:49:33] Erik: Um… Gotcha.
[0:49:34 – 0:49:35] Erik: I’m going to read this one.
[0:49:35 – 0:49:37] Erik: We didn’t do Do Now 634, did we?
[0:49:37 – 0:49:40] Erik: Oh, dear friend of the show, Do Now 6439.
[0:49:40 – 0:49:41] Erik: 634.
[0:49:42 – 0:49:44] Adam: Oh, that’s the other Do Now.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:46] Adam: Not confirmed.
[0:49:47 – 0:49:51] Erik: First trip the weekend after our grad parties back in 2000.
[0:49:51 – 0:49:55] Erik: We went East Bearskin Alder Canoe to a base camp on Crystal.
[0:49:56 – 0:50:00] Erik: Got to see a cow moose swim past our terribly angled camp at the second sight on Crystal.
[0:50:00 – 0:50:01] Adam: Oh, I know that camp.
[0:50:01 – 0:50:02] Adam: It was very steep.
[0:50:03 – 0:50:03] Adam: They are angled.
[0:50:03 – 0:50:04] Adam: Dangerous.
[0:50:04 – 0:50:06] Erik: First night, we were three deep.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:06] Erik: Exciting.
[0:50:07 – 0:50:10] Erik: In our Loonbleep Coleman three man.
[0:50:11 – 0:50:12] Erik: Tent or camp?
[0:50:12 – 0:50:13] Erik: Canoe?
[0:50:13 – 0:50:36] Erik: uh sleeping bag oh three-person sleeping bag yeah we’re anchoring yeah on that angled rock like yeah when uh alex honnold camped out overnight yeah cliff what are you those this is a free solo scenario here on crystal yeah well el capi this is the el capitan of minnesota over there on crystal yeah
[0:50:37 – 0:50:41] Erik: And then they heard some huffing and some snuffing.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:42] Adam: No growling, though.
[0:50:42 – 0:50:43] Adam: No.
[0:50:43 – 0:50:49] Erik: On the tent and something pushing sort of gently against the roof, maybe sniffing for food.
[0:50:50 – 0:50:53] Erik: We just laid there silently and after a few moments, back to silence.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:58] Erik: It was a dry early June, so there were no prints or anything.
[0:50:59 – 0:50:59] UNKNOWN: Hmm.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:02] Erik: Yeah, I guess starting the story off with not confirmed.
[0:51:02 – 0:51:08] Erik: It sounds pretty confirmed that that would be some kind of a bear or some horrible crystal menace of some sort.
[0:51:08 – 0:51:09] Erik: Crystal Lake.
[0:51:10 – 0:51:10] Erik: Maybe it was…
[0:51:11 – 0:51:11] Adam: Damn Crystal Lake.
[0:51:11 – 0:51:12] Adam: It was Jason.
[0:51:12 – 0:51:13] Erik: Was it Jason?
[0:51:13 – 0:51:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:13 – 0:51:14] Adam: That was his name?
[0:51:14 – 0:51:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:15 – 0:51:16] Erik: My mother never loved me.
[0:51:16 – 0:51:18] Erik: Maybe you should have saved the drowning man.
[0:51:19 – 0:51:20] Erik: Our backpacks were our food packs.
[0:51:20 – 0:51:22] Erik: We all had some of the food.
[0:51:23 – 0:51:28] Erik: We were just hung up at eye level, and the only thing that bothered us is one buddy got a mouse in his bag.
[0:51:29 – 0:51:30] Erik: Gerald.
[0:51:30 – 0:51:31] Erik: Gerald.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:32] Erik: Son of a bitch.
[0:51:32 – 0:51:39] Erik: Mine was safe because I thought we would be slaying fish because I’m an idiot and just brought ramen.
[0:51:39 – 0:51:42] Erik: Nobody, not even Boo Boo, wants ramen.
[0:51:43 – 0:51:46] Erik: I ate 17 that weekend and not another for at least a decade.
[0:51:47 – 0:51:49] Erik: 17 ramens.
[0:51:49 – 0:51:51] Erik: That’s a hungry lad.
[0:51:51 – 0:51:52] Erik: Mama.
[0:51:53 – 0:51:54] Erik: All right.
[0:51:55 – 0:52:01] Erik: The old angled three-man Coleman sleeping bag set up on crystal.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:02] Adam: Classic.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Adam: It’s an instant classic.
[0:52:08 – 0:52:16] Adam: Next up on the show, dear friend of the show, Admiral Gary, 15 days ago with five box of wine.
[0:52:16 – 0:52:17] Adam: See, the thing’s all screwed up, Eric.
[0:52:18 – 0:52:20] Adam: The one earlier only had four box of wine.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:23] Erik: Now, shouldn’t it be organized by box of wine?
[0:52:23 – 0:52:24] Erik: It should be.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:25] Adam: Disregard.
[0:52:25 – 0:52:30] Adam: One Franzia equals doesn’t always equal.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:31] Adam: He’s doing the thing with his hands.
[0:52:31 – 0:52:34] Erik: It’s the ERSAC conversion that’s got us all thrown off.
[0:52:34 – 0:52:36] Adam: We’re not really up to date on our conversions, I guess.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:39] Adam: I might have to go get recertified.
[0:52:39 – 0:52:41] Erik: Maybe I need to finally update Adobe.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:44] Adam: That’ll be the day.
[0:52:44 – 0:52:45] Adam: That’ll be the day.
[0:52:45 – 0:52:48] Adam: Next up on the show, Admiral Gary.
[0:52:48 – 0:52:49] Adam: Gary.
[0:52:49 – 0:52:49] Adam: Gary?
[0:52:50 – 0:52:51] Adam: Admiral Gary.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:54] Adam: Five boxes of wine.
[0:52:54 – 0:53:03] Adam: The closest thing I’ve had to having a bear encounter in the BWCA is camping at one of the walk-in campsites at Flower Lake Campground.
[0:53:04 – 0:53:14] Adam: Camping with the whole family one night in June 2021, we heard some splashing in the lake and some rustling of the brush at about 1 a.m.
[0:53:15 – 0:53:20] Adam: We were camping in the tent with the rain fly pulled back and I sat up when I heard the rustling.
[0:53:21 – 0:53:22] Adam: It was about to lay back down.
[0:53:23 – 0:53:29] Adam: Then more rustling started and the yearling bear was moving pretty quickly towards the tent.
[0:53:29 – 0:53:30] Erik: So much rustling.
[0:53:33 – 0:53:41] Adam: I don’t think the bear realized we were camping there and the bear came within 18 inches of me before I connected the dots and started screaming.
[0:53:41 – 0:53:50] Adam: My screaming startled him and I heard more rustling of brush and then eventually more splashing in the lake.
[0:53:50 – 0:53:50] Adam: The end.
[0:53:52 – 0:53:54] Adam: I don’t know why I keep adding the end to these.
[0:53:54 – 0:53:58] Adam: It’s so much more fun if you just say the end at the end of the comment.
[0:53:58 – 0:54:04] Adam: There’s so much rustling and splashing in this comment, Admiral Gary.
[0:54:04 – 0:54:05] Adam: You win.
[0:54:06 – 0:54:09] Erik: I’m going to award you an extra box of wine.
[0:54:09 – 0:54:10] Erik: This is such a good comment.
[0:54:11 – 0:54:12] Adam: This is such a good comment.
[0:54:12 – 0:54:14] Adam: Thank you, and very well written.
[0:54:14 – 0:54:15] Adam: I appreciate that one a lot.
[0:54:16 – 0:54:17] Adam: Wow, that was a fun one to read.
[0:54:19 – 0:54:20] Adam: Oh, boy, we got a doozy.
[0:54:20 – 0:54:23] Adam: I’m going to tackle the doozy if you’re okay with that one, Eric.
[0:54:23 – 0:54:24] Adam: I’m going to go for it.
[0:54:24 – 0:54:26] Erik: Just a lousy deucer over there.
[0:54:26 – 0:54:28] Adam: I’m feeling like a real deucer here.
[0:54:28 – 0:54:32] Adam: Why don’t you go mop up my comment for me, you lousy old deucer?
[0:54:33 – 0:54:37] Adam: If people haven’t seen Only the Brave, they’re like, what are they talking about?
[0:54:37 – 0:54:37] Adam: Deucer.
[0:54:38 – 0:54:44] Adam: I think Deucer is both an insult and a badge of honor when it comes to hot shotting.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:45] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:54:45 – 0:54:46] Adam: Just a level two.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:48] Adam: You’re just a level two.
[0:54:48 – 0:54:48] Adam: Deucer.
[0:54:48 – 0:54:49] Adam: You sick Deucer.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:53] Adam: Next up on the show, DirtyDodBod523.
[0:54:54 – 0:54:56] Adam: He’s a uno, not a deucer.
[0:54:57 – 0:54:58] Adam: DirtyDodBod.
[0:54:58 – 0:55:03] Adam: First and only bear encounter was in 2022 on Cherokee, site number 7.
[0:55:03 – 0:55:09] Erik: On BWCA.com, site 891 on Paddle Planner.
[0:55:10 – 0:55:12] Adam: I can go with the paddle planter one on that one for you.
[0:55:13 – 0:55:17] Adam: That’s how they mark the brown volcanoes, by the way.
[0:55:17 – 0:55:20] Erik: That’s how they count them, just for future reference.
[0:55:21 – 0:55:28] Adam: Our group was eight strong, and we needed a large site, so this one worked for the first stop of our six-night trip.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:38] Adam: However, when doing a first pass through camp, I found a large semi-fresh bear patty on the ground less than 100 feet from the main camp.
[0:55:39 – 0:55:43] Adam: I didn’t tell our group because we had spent all day getting up here from Sawbill.
[0:55:43 – 0:55:46] Adam: The group was gassed, and the site was too good to pass up.
[0:55:47 – 0:55:48] Adam: It’s just too good.
[0:55:48 – 0:55:49] Adam: It’s just a patty.
[0:55:49 – 0:55:49] Adam: Who cares?
[0:55:51 – 0:55:52] Adam: We had a ridiculous amount of food.
[0:55:53 – 0:55:57] Adam: Two 60 liter barrels and a 40 can backpack cooler.
[0:55:58 – 0:55:58] Adam: What?
[0:55:59 – 0:56:01] Adam: A 40-can backpack cooler.
[0:56:01 – 0:56:02] Adam: I don’t know what that means.
[0:56:02 – 0:56:04] Erik: Not filled with cans, surely.
[0:56:04 – 0:56:06] Adam: I think it’s just a unit of measurement.
[0:56:06 – 0:56:08] Adam: This is some sort of metric situation.
[0:56:08 – 0:56:10] Adam: Measuring by cans.
[0:56:10 – 0:56:13] Erik: Silver bullets or grenades or what size can?
[0:56:13 – 0:56:15] Adam: We only had one pulley system.
[0:56:15 – 0:56:18] Adam: There were no trees that could hold all that weight.
[0:56:18 – 0:56:25] Adam: So we decided to tie all vessels up at the base of a white pine about 50 to 60 feet behind my hammock spot.
[0:56:26 – 0:56:31] Adam: No problems night one, so we figured we were going to be okay using the same spot again the next night.
[0:56:33 – 0:56:41] Adam: Got into my hammock around 11.30 that night and within 10 minutes of camp going silent, I heard noises coming from behind me.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:50] Adam: After the third loud sniff and grunt, I realized we had a bear near the food and we quickly mobilized and scared it off.
[0:56:52 – 0:56:59] Adam: After doing our forensics, we found a fresh patty right next to the barrels and cooler that confirmed our visitor.
[0:57:00 – 0:57:05] Adam: But we then heard a loud splash right near the shore, indicating the bear had left the island.
[0:57:05 – 0:57:06] Adam: Oh, no.
[0:57:07 – 0:57:08] Erik: Oh, it was an island site, too?
[0:57:08 – 0:57:09] Adam: I guess so.
[0:57:09 – 0:57:12] Adam: We didn’t consult the map before we read this.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:13] Adam: Cherokee 7.
[0:57:14 – 0:57:15] Adam: Island site.
[0:57:15 – 0:57:16] Adam: Island site.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:22] Adam: Although our rations were saved, our loud and quick mobilization had scared one of our trip mates terribly.
[0:57:23 – 0:57:29] Adam: It was their first backcountry camping trip ever, and they had been worried about bears the whole time.
[0:57:29 – 0:57:35] Adam: For the rest of the trip, they slept maybe a total of four hours and would wake up in a panic at almost any noise.
[0:57:36 – 0:57:37] Erik: Not again!
[0:57:39 – 0:57:47] Adam: A pretty intense thunderstorm the next night made it even worse, and they and their significant other were completely sleep-deprived by the fourth night.
[0:57:49 – 0:57:50] Erik: That sounds terrible.
[0:57:51 – 0:58:01] Adam: I end up feeling pretty terrible about not saying something immediately about the scat I saw when we first found the campsite, as finding another site may have saved us from the encounter.
[0:58:02 – 0:58:08] Adam: With everyone struggling to sleep soundly the rest of the trip and a couple of brutal travel days that would follow…
[0:58:09 – 0:58:10] Adam: We decided to cut it one night short.
[0:58:11 – 0:58:18] Adam: The biggest takeaway from that trip was that feeding eight mid-20s individuals for six days is too much food to lug around.
[0:58:18 – 0:58:25] Adam: It makes hanging almost impossible for the first few nights and significantly increases the risk of food catastrophe.
[0:58:26 – 0:58:31] Adam: So I don’t plan on doing another long trip with a large group like that again anytime soon.
[0:58:33 – 0:58:37] Adam: The second takeaway is not to ignore fresh scat in camp.
[0:58:37 – 0:58:39] Adam: And take it as a more serious warning.
[0:58:41 – 0:58:42] Adam: Three boxes of wine.
[0:58:42 – 0:58:43] Adam: End of story.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:47] Adam: And so there, and then that’s how you end it.
[0:58:48 – 0:58:53] Erik: Yeah, that sounds like an insane amount of food to try to haul in.
[0:58:53 – 0:58:55] Erik: Eight people’s worth of food.
[0:58:55 – 0:58:56] Adam: Being eight 20-year-olds?
[0:58:56 – 0:58:57] Adam: God.
[0:58:57 – 0:59:01] Adam: I mean, that’s like a whole pack of bacon per person each day.
[0:59:02 – 0:59:05] Erik: Yeah, I mean, at that point, I would just be like, you’re all on your own.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:06] Erik: Pack in.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:10] Erik: If you want to eat, you have to pack in your own food, whatever you want.
[0:59:11 – 0:59:14] Adam: Hey, on the other hand, consider yourself lucky you have eight friends.
[0:59:15 – 0:59:16] Erik: Wow, yeah, that’s the other thing.
[0:59:16 – 0:59:18] Adam: That’s pretty neat.
[0:59:18 – 0:59:19] Adam: I haven’t thought of that.
[0:59:20 – 0:59:22] Adam: I mean, so you got that going for you.
[0:59:22 – 0:59:23] Adam: I couldn’t even imagine.
[0:59:23 – 0:59:23] Erik: Which is nice.
[0:59:23 – 0:59:26] Erik: What a trip would look like with eight people that.
[0:59:27 – 0:59:29] Erik: Eight hungry 20-year-olds.
[0:59:29 – 0:59:31] Erik: Well, I’m just thinking about people that I know.
[0:59:31 – 0:59:32] Erik: I don’t know who.
[0:59:32 – 0:59:35] Adam: You’d probably end up with a bunch of zombie beavers.
[0:59:36 – 0:59:36] Adam: Basically.
[0:59:37 – 0:59:41] Adam: Coming up on your raft, right from the middle of the raft, Eric.
[0:59:41 – 0:59:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:59:41 – 0:59:43] Erik: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[0:59:44 – 0:59:47] Erik: Those days are well… Might bite you right in the foot.
[0:59:47 – 0:59:54] Erik: Well, in my rearview mirror at this point where I was going on trips with just like random acquaintances, friend of a friend.
[0:59:54 – 0:59:56] Erik: I don’t know who this guy is.
[0:59:56 – 0:59:57] Erik: We’re going on a bourgeois trip.
[0:59:57 – 0:59:58] Erik: I’m 23.
[0:59:58 – 0:59:59] Erik: Seems pretty cool.
[0:59:59 – 0:59:59] Erik: What do I care?
[1:00:00 – 1:00:01] Erik: Seems like a nice fellow.
[1:00:02 – 1:00:03] Erik: Yeah, the thought of the…
[1:00:03 – 1:00:05] Erik: Seems like a lake fellow.
[1:00:05 – 1:00:07] Erik: The terrible… Soft.
[1:00:07 – 1:00:08] Erik: The terribly…
[1:00:08 – 1:00:09] Erik: Gentle and citrusy.
[1:00:10 – 1:00:11] Erik: Yes, exactly.
[1:00:11 – 1:00:19] Erik: The terribly sleep deprived and scared couple is… Yeah, I’m sure the time was… What was that?
[1:00:19 – 1:00:22] Erik: Was terrible, but in retrospect is pretty hilarious.
[1:00:22 – 1:00:23] Erik: I think it’s funny.
[1:00:23 – 1:00:28] Erik: The thunderstorm, I feel like, would be a great opportunity to finally get some sleep.
[1:00:28 – 1:00:28] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:28 – 1:00:31] Erik: That would be… Because I sleep through that stuff.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:33] Adam: I sleep so good during a thunderstorm.
[1:00:33 – 1:00:34] Erik: Yeah, exactly.
[1:00:34 – 1:00:42] Erik: I’d be like, all right, now I can’t hear what’s happening because one of these is just dead quiet and you’re just laying there waiting to hear that horrible creature come back.
[1:00:42 – 1:00:44] Adam: The worst part is too much silence.
[1:00:45 – 1:00:45] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:00:45 – 1:00:46] Erik: Where it’s just that like…
[1:00:47 – 1:00:48] Adam: I got a baby in the house.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:51] Adam: I can’t sleep now without a sound machine anymore.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:52] Erik: I’m ruined.
[1:00:52 – 1:00:53] Erik: We got waves.
[1:00:53 – 1:00:55] Erik: We got cityscape, white noise.
[1:00:55 – 1:00:56] Erik: What are you working with?
[1:00:57 – 1:00:57] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:00:57 – 1:00:58] Erik: I like seascape.
[1:00:59 – 1:00:59] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:00] Erik: The Homer Simpson style?
[1:01:01 – 1:01:02] Erik: The seagulls come in?
[1:01:02 – 1:01:06] Erik: That one, the whoosh.
[1:01:06 – 1:01:09] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:09 – 1:01:10] Adam: Wow, that’s a good one.
[1:01:10 – 1:01:10] Adam: Yeah.
[1:01:12 – 1:01:14] Adam: How Aero is very upset you did that.
[1:01:14 – 1:01:15] Adam: I can’t believe you did that.
[1:01:16 – 1:01:17] Erik: All right.
[1:01:17 – 1:01:19] Erik: Strangebrew0105.
[1:01:20 – 1:01:21] Erik: What does it all mean?
[1:01:21 – 1:01:25] Erik: Lake Pauly on my first ever Boundary Waters trip 20 years ago.
[1:01:26 – 1:01:27] Erik: Bear strolled in or on suppertime.
[1:01:28 – 1:01:29] Erik: We banged some pots and pans.
[1:01:30 – 1:01:33] Erik: It took its sweet time leaving, but never saw it again.
[1:01:33 – 1:01:43] Erik: A few years later, did a fly-in fishing trip near, oh, oh, I was going to say Ogish, but it is Ogoki Lake Provincial Park.
[1:01:43 – 1:01:45] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:01:45 – 1:01:46] Erik: Ogoki.
[1:01:46 – 1:01:47] Erik: Never heard of it.
[1:01:48 – 1:01:48] Erik: Ogoki.
[1:01:49 – 1:01:50] Adam: That’s a Crownland deal.
[1:01:51 – 1:01:52] Erik: That’s a Crownland deal.
[1:01:52 – 1:01:53] Erik: That’s a Crownland deal.
[1:01:53 – 1:01:57] Erik: Different type of trip with an outpost cabin and 12-foot motorboats.
[1:01:57 – 1:02:00] Erik: We made the mistake of forgetting the fish oil pot out.
[1:02:01 – 1:02:08] Erik: In the morning, we woke up to a bear peeking its face in the cabin window and its snout covered in fish oil and hundreds of mosquitoes.
[1:02:08 – 1:02:09] Erik: Gross.
[1:02:09 – 1:02:11] Erik: That sounds like a nasty scene.
[1:02:13 – 1:02:14] Erik: It’s heinous.
[1:02:15 – 1:02:25] Erik: Have I told you that I know who the old bear video, the couple that scares off the bear and the one guy jacks that bear in the hind quarter with a rock?
[1:02:26 – 1:02:26] Adam: From the original.
[1:02:27 – 1:02:29] Erik: From the original Bon Jovi’s video.
[1:02:29 – 1:02:31] Erik: Have I told you that I know who that is now?
[1:02:32 – 1:02:32] Adam: No.
[1:02:32 – 1:02:33] Erik: Yeah.
[1:02:34 – 1:02:36] Erik: A person that I work with, that’s his dad.
[1:02:37 – 1:02:37] Erik: Ah.
[1:02:37 – 1:02:37] Erik: Yeah.
[1:02:37 – 1:02:40] Erik: They both worked for the Forest Service and they were in that video with the bear.
[1:02:40 – 1:02:40] Erik: Famous.
[1:02:40 – 1:02:40] Erik: Yeah.
[1:02:41 – 1:02:41] Erik: Yeah.
[1:02:42 – 1:02:43] Adam: Is that the kid then?
[1:02:44 – 1:02:45] Erik: No, I don’t think so.
[1:02:46 – 1:02:48] Erik: I don’t know who the child was in that.
[1:02:50 – 1:02:50] Erik: It was John Stamos.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:52] Erik: Fun fact.
[1:02:53 – 1:02:54] Erik: Not John Mayer.
[1:02:54 – 1:02:54] Adam: No.
[1:02:55 – 1:02:56] Adam: You get Cheap Dancer.
[1:02:56 – 1:03:01] Erik: I’m sure it’s going to be riddled with puns and jokes and see a few emojis.
[1:03:01 – 1:03:02] Adam: I love it.
[1:03:02 – 1:03:03] Adam: Hopefully there’s some wrestling.
[1:03:03 – 1:03:14] Adam: Dear friend of the show, Cheap Dancer, artist, poet, and philosopher, and true gentleman.
[1:03:15 – 1:03:17] Adam: Five days ago with two boxes of wine.
[1:03:17 – 1:03:19] Adam: What the hell is going on around here?
[1:03:20 – 1:03:26] Adam: The closest I’ve ever came to having a beer in camp was on a trip a couple years ago on the Kawishui River.
[1:03:27 – 1:03:35] Adam: First thing in the morning, we were lowering the blue barrel for our ration of Coghlan’s Instant Regret Coffee Flavored Beverage Mix.
[1:03:36 – 1:03:42] Adam: And I opened the breakfast Ziploc to reveal a box of Kodiak cakes with eight grams of protein per serving.
[1:03:42 – 1:03:42] Adam: Pew, pew, pew.
[1:03:44 – 1:03:50] Adam: I believe the reason I’ve never had a bear in camp is due to keeping a meticulously messy campsite.
[1:03:50 – 1:03:55] Adam: Sometimes I can’t even find Thursday’s lunch, so how can we expect a bear to?
[1:03:56 – 1:03:57] Erik: That’s a good point.
[1:03:58 – 1:03:59] Erik: Well, as long as you’ve got your protein.
[1:04:01 – 1:04:05] Erik: The closest thing he’s ever had to bears in camp is Kodiak cakes.
[1:04:05 – 1:04:06] Erik: Too much protein.
[1:04:07 – 1:04:12] Adam: Thank you for the comment, and bless your heart, Cheap Dancer.
[1:04:13 – 1:04:15] Adam: Next up on the show, paddling partner.
[1:04:15 – 1:04:16] Adam: 15 days ago?
[1:04:17 – 1:04:18] Adam: Four boxes of wine.
[1:04:19 – 1:04:21] Adam: This one’s got a link in it, Eric.
[1:04:21 – 1:04:21] Adam: I don’t think so.
[1:04:22 – 1:04:23] Adam: You stay away from that link.
[1:04:23 – 1:04:26] Adam: I am clicking on it with all nine of my fingers.
[1:04:27 – 1:04:29] Erik: What happened to the other finger?
[1:04:30 – 1:04:32] Adam: God damn you, Gerald.
[1:04:32 – 1:04:33] Adam: You son of a bitch.
[1:04:34 – 1:04:35] Adam: Next up on the show.
[1:04:35 – 1:04:35] Adam: Shush.
[1:04:36 – 1:04:37] Adam: Next up on the show.
[1:04:37 – 1:04:40] Adam: Paddling partner 15 days ago.
[1:04:40 – 1:04:43] Adam: On 75 trips, I’ve had only one.
[1:04:43 – 1:04:44] Adam: Holy smokes.
[1:04:44 – 1:04:45] Adam: That’s a lot of trips.
[1:04:45 – 1:04:46] Adam: On 75 trips.
[1:04:47 – 1:04:49] Adam: Three, two, one.
[1:04:50 – 1:04:51] Adam: Next up on the show.
[1:04:51 – 1:04:53] Adam: You’re going backwards.
[1:04:55 – 1:04:58] Adam: Next up on the show, paddling partner, 15 days ago.
[1:04:58 – 1:05:03] Adam: On 75 trips, I’ve had only one bear in camp, and it was the oddest encounter.
[1:05:03 – 1:05:10] Adam: I was sitting in my hammock when a tiny bear comes running into camp, looking a little scared.
[1:05:11 – 1:05:13] Adam: It could not have been bigger than a large dog.
[1:05:14 – 1:05:18] Adam: I just watched it while I went over to a bush and stripped it clean of berries.
[1:05:19 – 1:05:23] Adam: I went about my business in camp and it didn’t seem to care that I was there.
[1:05:23 – 1:05:26] Adam: As long as it was just eating berries, I decided to let it be.
[1:05:27 – 1:05:31] Adam: I set up my camera to record it and it also did not mind that.
[1:05:32 – 1:05:34] Adam: After eating all the berries, it wandered down to the shore…
[1:05:35 – 1:05:37] Adam: But it eventually circled back to camp.
[1:05:38 – 1:05:46] Adam: I watched it go towards my day pack where I had a couple of granola bars, and I thought I couldn’t let it get into that, so I said, Hey!
[1:05:47 – 1:05:49] Adam: It looked up and took off into the brush.
[1:05:49 – 1:05:50] Adam: I didn’t see it again.
[1:05:52 – 1:05:56] Adam: Later, I went to my tent and found out that the pole had snapped and the rain fly was torn.
[1:05:57 – 1:06:08] Adam: It took me a little while to piece it together in my head, but I figured the bear had been curious, leaned on the tent, and the pole snapped, startled it, and that’s why I had seen it running scared into the main part of camp.
[1:06:09 – 1:06:17] Adam: I never have any food or smellables in my tent, so it just might have been curious.
[1:06:17 – 1:06:18] Adam: Video of the bear.
[1:06:19 – 1:06:24] Adam: It is a YouTube link, Eric, and I am definitely clicking on it, and that’s the click, click.
[1:06:24 – 1:06:25] Adam: I’m not clicking on it.
[1:06:26 – 1:06:27] Adam: We’ll watch it later.
[1:06:28 – 1:06:29] Erik: Oh, no.
[1:06:29 – 1:06:30] Adam: Now our heater went out.
[1:06:31 – 1:06:45] Adam: The heater’s out, and we’re to the final comment of the show, and we’re going to take this opportunity to thank a dear friend of the show, Isle of Pine, one more time for the beautiful Frisbees and delicious soft IPAs.
[1:06:47 – 1:06:49] Adam: This has been a real treat here tonight.
[1:06:51 – 1:06:52] Erik: Wow, this is a great way to end.
[1:06:53 – 1:06:54] Erik: From Muskie Eater.
[1:06:54 – 1:06:57] Erik: I’ll preface this by saying I have nothing to contribute.
[1:06:58 – 1:07:05] Erik: I’ve heard stories from my parents and their friends of persistent bears back in the 70s, and I’ve never given it much thought.
[1:07:06 – 1:07:10] Erik: Usually hang our food or put it by the fire pit with pots and pans on it.
[1:07:11 – 1:07:14] Erik: And since I listened to Eric’s story from his youth, I try to rip my youth.
[1:07:15 – 1:07:17] Erik: This was just yesterday.
[1:07:17 – 1:07:20] Erik: You old ass.
[1:07:20 – 1:07:25] Erik: I try to remember to place my camp stove on a hose attached to gas under my hammock with a lighter.
[1:07:26 – 1:07:27] Adam: You’re not the only one.
[1:07:27 – 1:07:30] Erik: Get that old wizard flame going.
[1:07:34 – 1:07:35] Erik: Brutus is no match.
[1:07:36 – 1:07:36] Erik: Nor Gerald.
[1:07:37 – 1:07:38] Erik: Nor Gerald.
[1:07:38 – 1:07:43] Erik: Nor Gerald is no match for the fire glove that I’m going to whip at him the next time I see his beady little eyes.
[1:07:47 – 1:07:49] Erik: Well, that’s it.
[1:07:49 – 1:07:49] Erik: That’s all of them.
[1:07:49 – 1:07:50] Erik: We did it.
[1:07:50 – 1:07:51] Erik: We did it in two.
[1:07:51 – 1:07:52] Erik: Bear month is over.
[1:07:52 – 1:07:54] Erik: Bear month cut in half.
[1:07:55 – 1:07:55] Erik: Cut in half.
[1:07:56 – 1:07:57] Adam: Thank you for your comments.
[1:07:57 – 1:07:58] Adam: It was a lot of fun.
[1:07:58 – 1:08:02] Adam: And I hope we all learned something from this.
[1:08:03 – 1:08:03] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:03 – 1:08:05] Erik: We all can learn and we all can grow.
[1:08:05 – 1:08:08] Adam: So lesson one, keep a clean camp.
[1:08:09 – 1:08:11] Adam: Lesson two, keep a real messy camp.
[1:08:12 – 1:08:14] Adam: Lesson three, curly bike locks.
[1:08:15 – 1:08:15] Erik: Curly bike locks.
[1:08:16 – 1:08:19] Adam: Got to get yourself a bike lock and 30 paces out.
[1:08:19 – 1:08:19] Adam: Yeah.
[1:08:19 – 1:08:20] Adam: No problemo.
[1:08:20 – 1:08:26] Erik: And hope to God for a bumper crop of some lolly blolly jalapeno poppers.
[1:08:26 – 1:08:27] Erik: Lolly blends.
[1:08:27 – 1:08:27] Adam: Yeah.
[1:08:27 – 1:08:29] Adam: And then also hot ones them.
[1:08:29 – 1:08:30] Adam: Hot ones them.
[1:08:30 – 1:08:33] Adam: If you win in doubt, rub hot sauce all over your gear.
[1:08:33 – 1:08:33] Adam: Yeah.
[1:08:34 – 1:08:37] Adam: And you’ll really teach the bear a lesson that way.
[1:08:39 – 1:08:39] Adam: All right.
[1:08:40 – 1:08:46] Adam: Well, I hope everybody out there knows is avoid Brutus, but don’t be too harsh on Gerald.
[1:08:46 – 1:08:47] Adam: No.
[1:08:47 – 1:08:52] Adam: Gerald is out there doing his thing, trying to live under a little chef hat, making a beautiful ratatouille.
[1:08:52 – 1:08:53] Erik: He’s still finding his way.
[1:08:54 – 1:08:55] Adam: It’s the key.
[1:08:55 – 1:09:06] Adam: The key is a good eggplant, a beautiful aubergine, and also the memories of your family’s old recipes.
[1:09:06 – 1:09:06] Erik: Yep.
[1:09:08 – 1:09:10] Adam: Thank you for everybody that commented.
[1:09:10 – 1:09:11] Adam: Shout out to the Patreons.
[1:09:11 – 1:09:14] Adam: We’re about to get you some extra goodies out here.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:17] Adam: It’s not going to be hot sauce.
[1:09:17 – 1:09:19] Adam: It’s going to be zombievers.
[1:09:20 – 1:09:22] Adam: Sweet, sweet beaver piss.
[1:09:22 – 1:09:24] Adam: Oh, my God.
[1:09:25 – 1:09:26] Adam: Electric green beaver piss.
[1:09:27 – 1:09:30] Adam: They spared no expenses on the practical effects in this one.
[1:09:30 – 1:09:31] Adam: They did not.
[1:09:32 – 1:09:34] Erik: All the money went towards the talent.
[1:09:34 – 1:09:35] Adam: That’s right.
[1:09:35 – 1:09:36] Adam: Yeah.
[1:09:37 – 1:09:43] Adam: All those people went on to successful careers in soap operas and talk shows.
[1:09:43 – 1:09:44] Adam: Yeah.
[1:09:44 – 1:09:45] Adam: Oh, what was that?
[1:09:45 – 1:09:46] Adam: I think both.
[1:09:46 – 1:09:47] Adam: Yes.
