[0:01:10 – 0:01:11] Adam: That’s too intense.
[0:01:11 – 0:01:11] Adam: Is it Saturday?
[0:01:12 – 0:01:13] Adam: It is.
[0:01:13 – 0:01:13] Adam: It is Saturday.
[0:01:13 – 0:01:16] Adam: Welcome to Saturday night podcast.
[0:01:17 – 0:01:19] Adam: We’re here live in Studio K. I’m Adam.
[0:01:20 – 0:01:22] Adam: And with me as always is Eric.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:23] Adam: This is the one we’re going with.
[0:01:24 – 0:01:24] Erik: Hello, Eric.
[0:01:26 – 0:01:26] Erik: All right.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:28] Erik: Wow.
[0:01:29 – 0:01:30] Adam: I’ve been busy today.
[0:01:30 – 0:01:30] Adam: Yeah?
[0:01:30 – 0:01:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:31 – 0:01:40] Adam: Tumble Home is, of course, brought to you, as always, by Clearwater Historic Lodge and Outfitters on the Gumblin Trail.
[0:01:41 – 0:02:09] Adam: beautiful lodge i ran into some folks at work today or yesterday i guess and they were uh coming off a trip they were on clearwater six and then they made their way down to caribou and actually then after i was talking i was like yeah i talked to you before your trip actually too and they told me they were going to clearwater i was like oh boy god’s country say hi to eric for me did you really say that i did yeah and then i talked to him after the trip and they’re like we never saw eric i was like he’s a busy dude
[0:02:10 – 0:02:22] Erik: Yeah, you should consider yourself a lucky person if you get to run into me at Clearwater for more reasons than just the fact that I’m busy.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:24] Adam: You may ask yourself, why am I so jazzed?
[0:02:24 – 0:02:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:26] Adam: Besides it being a Saturday show.
[0:02:26 – 0:02:29] Erik: I think, yeah, we’re all wondering.
[0:02:29 – 0:02:31] Adam: I’ve been stacking wood in the fog all day.
[0:02:31 – 0:02:32] Adam: It’s hot.
[0:02:32 – 0:02:34] Adam: It’s unreasonably humid.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:36] Adam: But it’s not that hot.
[0:02:36 – 0:02:37] Adam: I don’t know what’s going on.
[0:02:37 – 0:02:38] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:02:38 – 0:02:40] Erik: I put pants on and then I was like, this is a mistake.
[0:02:40 – 0:02:41] Erik: I can’t get comfortable today.
[0:02:41 – 0:02:45] Erik: It’s like 67 degrees, but just super humid.
[0:02:45 – 0:02:46] Adam: I don’t know what’s going on.
[0:02:46 – 0:02:47] Adam: But I do know.
[0:02:49 – 0:02:50] Adam: the sponsor of the week.
[0:02:51 – 0:02:55] Adam: It’s an unusual one, and it’s a kickback to our PMA episode.
[0:02:56 – 0:03:01] Adam: We have some Medaglia D’Ore, espresso instant coffee.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:03] Erik: I think that’s Spanish.
[0:03:03 – 0:03:07] Erik: You really put a lot of Italian on that.
[0:03:07 – 0:03:08] Erik: Let me hear the music in it.
[0:03:08 – 0:03:10] Erik: Literally, there’s a Spanish flag.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:11] Erik: Oh, you say it.
[0:03:12 – 0:03:13] Adam: I don’t think I would.
[0:03:13 – 0:03:14] Adam: I think that’s an Italian flag.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:14] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:16] Adam: Is it Italian?
[0:03:16 – 0:03:17] Adam: It’s espresso.
[0:03:18 – 0:03:44] Adam: medaglia de oro what did i say you really turn that g into a j yeah it’s a soft g de oro the crystals and you didn’t roll your r enough i can’t do that yeah well i mean it’s from miami so that does not help us okay then but this is an espresso instant coffee in a nice little jar we did not have to strain the crystals out no it’s a very fancy instant coffee yeah and it is clearly doing the job
[0:03:45 – 0:04:02] Adam: Yeah, somehow I woke up today, and we didn’t have any coffee in Studio K. So when Eric got here with the Madaglio, I said, I’m going to go boil up five quarts of hot water, and we’re going to drink this whole can of crystals.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:03] Erik: Yes.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:03] Erik: Yes.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:08] Erik: It was gifted to us, again, by a friend of the show, Paul.
[0:04:09 – 0:04:11] Erik: Heard us talking about flavor crystals.
[0:04:11 – 0:04:13] Adam: Paul’s getting a lot of golden karma for that.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:14] Erik: Yeah, I’d say.
[0:04:15 – 0:04:16] Erik: And he dropped off some beer as well.
[0:04:17 – 0:04:17] Erik: Thanks again, Paul.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:18] Erik: Quite a few beers.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:22] Erik: I think we’re enjoying the instant coffee in studio.
[0:04:22 – 0:04:25] Erik: I can’t wait to get that out in the field.
[0:04:25 – 0:04:26] Erik: It’s delicious.
[0:04:26 – 0:04:30] Erik: It beats the heck out of that taster’s choice crap.
[0:04:32 – 0:04:32] Adam: Oh.
[0:04:33 – 0:04:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:33 – 0:04:35] Adam: That is reverse guffawed.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:04:38 – 0:04:39] Adam: Hey, how you doing?
[0:04:40 – 0:04:42] Erik: So, we’re drinking coffee.
[0:04:42 – 0:04:43] Erik: It’s really hot.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:45] Erik: It is nice and steamy.
[0:04:47 – 0:04:47] Erik: Yeah.
[0:04:47 – 0:04:47] Erik: So…
[0:04:49 – 0:04:50] Adam: That’s tasty stuff.
[0:04:51 – 0:04:54] Adam: Honestly, we might only need to drink instant coffee.
[0:04:54 – 0:04:56] Adam: What’s wrong with instant coffee?
[0:04:56 – 0:04:59] Adam: I was growing up with this impression that instant coffee is crap.
[0:04:59 – 0:05:00] Erik: It does get a bad rap.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:06] Adam: It does, but it’s really good, and you don’t have to deal with the whole coffee machine or even a press.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:07] Erik: It’s clean.
[0:05:07 – 0:05:07] Erik: It’s quick.
[0:05:07 – 0:05:07] Erik: It’s super easy.
[0:05:08 – 0:05:09] Erik: Super easy.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:11] Erik: You don’t even have to strain out the crystals.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:18] Adam: If I had a jar of DeGaulia Dioro in the house, I wouldn’t have been gone until four in the afternoon without coffee today.
[0:05:19 – 0:05:23] Erik: I can’t even imagine what the show would have been like if I had not.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:24] Erik: How fortuitous.
[0:05:24 – 0:05:28] Adam: I’m still wearing sweatpants and slippers, but I’m also wearing a blazer and a top hat today.
[0:05:28 – 0:05:31] Adam: This is how badly my day has been thrown off.
[0:05:32 – 0:05:34] Erik: You moved a bunch of wood and a top hat?
[0:05:34 – 0:05:35] Adam: I was.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:36] Adam: I was stacking wood and a top hat.
[0:05:37 – 0:05:38] Adam: That’s a rock fact.
[0:05:38 – 0:05:40] Erik: That’s a rock fact.
[0:05:40 – 0:05:44] Erik: We are going to talk about some of the reasons why.
[0:05:46 – 0:05:49] Erik: fellow paddlers, and ourselves visit the Boundary Waters.
[0:05:50 – 0:05:50] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:05:51 – 0:05:54] Erik: Last few episodes, it seems like it was kind of an underlying theme.
[0:05:55 – 0:05:55] Erik: Right, right.
[0:05:56 – 0:05:58] Erik: We’ll find out if it’s a good idea or a bad idea.
[0:05:58 – 0:06:04] Adam: Yeah, it’s kind of a big picture episode now, following the hyper-specific PMA episode.
[0:06:04 – 0:06:04] Adam: Yeah.
[0:06:05 – 0:06:08] Adam: We’re kind of stepping back from the telescope a little bit.
[0:06:09 – 0:06:11] Adam: We’re kind of thinking, we’re just looking at the whole sky tonight.
[0:06:12 – 0:06:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:06:12 – 0:06:15] Erik: I don’t know if like, this seems like it should have been like episode two or something.
[0:06:16 – 0:06:16] Erik: No, I think it’s all right.
[0:06:17 – 0:06:18] Erik: But it’s 31.
[0:06:18 – 0:06:24] Erik: If I haven’t mentioned that, I don’t know what, you know, at this point, I don’t know how many starts we’ve got under our belt if I said it or not, but.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:06:25 – 0:06:31] Adam: It looks like we have some pretty good feedback on this question, so I am excited to see what the people have to say on this.
[0:06:31 – 0:06:33] Erik: We’re going to hear from the people.
[0:06:33 – 0:06:36] Adam: I have some pretty good experience as to…
[0:06:36 – 0:06:48] Adam: I was like, I don’t know what I’m going to say about this, but I was down in the cities this week, and so I’ve got some reverse testimony as to why…
[0:06:49 – 0:07:08] Adam: i really love the boundary waters it’s because of what i just experienced down in the cities last couple days well we do we can wait before you you get into that we go a lot yeah we let everybody else speak first and then we just do uh wrap it up later yeah we’ll follow the boat show formula and uh and let and let y’all
[0:07:09 – 0:07:31] Adam: tease it out we got a story from the big city coming up story from adam and the big city yeah we’ll have to get the music we get uh how much do you think it would be to get the uh curb your enthusiasm you can just use that just adam walking around the mall of america listening to the smiths on my headphones just staring and gawking at people
[0:07:31 – 0:07:33] Erik: It seems like a horrible juxtaposition.
[0:07:33 – 0:07:36] Erik: The Smiths in your ears while you’re walking around the Mall of America.
[0:07:37 – 0:07:42] Adam: I purposely selected something I felt was the opposite of the Mall of America to listen to while I walked around.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:44] Adam: We’ll tell that story later.
[0:07:45 – 0:07:51] Erik: And a sweet Morrissey, Smiths, and Fugazi playlist put together for Camp Snoopy.
[0:07:52 – 0:07:53] Erik: It totally made sense.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:54] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:55 – 0:08:18] Erik: uh before we get to your comments on why why i mean seriously though why i want to know because i somebody just came in and asked me this question in the outfitting room and i it kind of threw me for a loop because i didn’t know how to answer the question um they were looking at the big map wall and
[0:08:18 – 0:08:18] Erik: Ooh.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:20] Erik: The big map wall.
[0:08:20 – 0:08:21] Erik: Who can resist?
[0:08:21 – 0:08:22] Erik: Oh, I love that map.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:28] Erik: I finally found- Took me 12 years to finally get the map wall of my dreams up, and it’s up, and I love it.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:30] Adam: The map wall of my dreams.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:36] Erik: And they were standing there for a little bit, and they’re like, so what does Quetico mean?
[0:08:36 – 0:08:39] Erik: And I was like, it’s the Canadian.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:40] Adam: It’s pronounced Quantico.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:43] Erik: Yeah, it’s pronounced Algonquin, actually.
[0:08:43 – 0:08:48] Erik: I was like, well, it’s the Canadian equivalent, essentially, of the Bajau waters.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:49] Erik: Like, yeah, no, I know.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:51] Erik: What does it mean?
[0:08:52 – 0:08:53] Erik: I was like, oh.
[0:08:53 – 0:08:55] Erik: The land of the great waters.
[0:08:56 – 0:08:58] Erik: It’s got to mean something.
[0:08:59 – 0:09:00] Adam: Do you know what it means?
[0:09:01 – 0:09:03] Adam: It’s the same thing as mile wake.
[0:09:05 – 0:09:06] Adam: I do not.
[0:09:06 – 0:09:10] Adam: I’m going to go ahead and assume it has something to do with water and rocks.
[0:09:11 – 0:09:14] Erik: Yeah, no, and that’s kind of what I said, but then while they were there, I’m like, well, let’s just quick.
[0:09:14 – 0:09:16] Adam: The highway of the canoe.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:18] Adam: Let’s quick kind of just do a little research.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:19] Adam: Or is that Lac La Croix?
[0:09:19 – 0:09:23] Adam: I think Lac La Croix is, LLC is the canoe highway.
[0:09:23 – 0:09:24] Erik: Yes.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:29] Erik: So before I read the, it’s not even an answer.
[0:09:31 – 0:09:33] Erik: This is just according to Wikipedia.
[0:09:34 – 0:09:37] Erik: And the origin of the park’s name is a mystery, which is cool.
[0:09:37 – 0:09:39] Erik: I kind of like when things are mystery.
[0:09:39 – 0:09:41] Erik: I’m intrigued.
[0:09:41 – 0:09:47] Erik: Locals say the park is named after the Quebec Timber Company.
[0:09:47 – 0:09:51] Erik: So Q-U-E-T-I-C-O.
[0:09:52 – 0:09:53] Erik: Quetico.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:57] Erik: And then it’s followed, however, no such company existed.
[0:09:58 – 0:09:58] Erik: Okay.
[0:09:58 – 0:10:00] Adam: Only in our hearts, Eric.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:01] Adam: I like that.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:05] Erik: When I saw that right away, I was like, ooh, that would have been a fun answer.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:07] Adam: If I owned a timber company, it would be Metico.
[0:10:07 – 0:10:08] Erik: Metico.
[0:10:09 – 0:10:09] Erik: Yeah.
[0:10:09 – 0:10:10] Adam: Metico.
[0:10:11 – 0:10:14] Adam: Also a crystal that you can stir into hot water.
[0:10:16 – 0:10:26] Erik: Also, the name may have derived from the French words, which means search for the coast.
[0:10:27 – 0:10:28] Adam: Oh, I think I’ve heard that one before.
[0:10:28 – 0:10:30] Erik: I like that as well.
[0:10:30 – 0:10:43] Erik: But I think the best one, which I think we’re just going to go ahead until we get fact-checked, and say that it’s an Ojibwe name for a benevolent spirit who resides in places of great beauty.
[0:10:45 – 0:10:46] Adam: So it’s like a nice Memogwazi.
[0:10:47 – 0:10:49] Erik: Yeah, your friendly Wendigo.
[0:10:50 – 0:10:51] Erik: Friendly Wendigo.
[0:10:51 – 0:10:57] Erik: So if anybody else has anything that they can add to that, I don’t know why, that just kind of caught me off guard.
[0:10:57 – 0:11:05] Erik: I thought I’d heard it all, but I don’t know where the name originated, and it doesn’t seem like anybody else does.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:09] Erik: So call us up.
[0:11:09 – 0:11:09] Erik: Let us know.
[0:11:10 – 0:11:12] Erik: Answering Machine, number at the end of the show.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:17] Erik: But in the meantime, we’re talking.
[0:11:18 – 0:11:19] Erik: Why?
[0:11:19 – 0:11:20] Erik: Why?
[0:11:21 – 0:11:23] Erik: Why do you visit the park?
[0:11:24 – 0:11:24] Erik: It’s there.
[0:11:25 – 0:11:26] Erik: You know, you could do anything.
[0:11:26 – 0:11:28] Erik: You could go to the Mall of America.
[0:11:28 – 0:11:28] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:29 – 0:11:33] Erik: You could go up to Itasca and jump across the Mississippi River.
[0:11:34 – 0:11:35] Adam: Go to our preseason football game.
[0:11:36 – 0:11:41] Erik: Stay up until 2 in the morning watching fourth stringers kick field goals in the wrong direction.
[0:11:42 – 0:11:46] Erik: You could fly to Amsterdam to go see the war on drugs just, you know, for a weekend.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:48] Erik: Or the Van Gogh Museum.
[0:11:50 – 0:11:53] Erik: But you choose to come up to the Boundary Waters.
[0:11:54 – 0:12:00] Erik: And let’s start with whatever this tab is, which is Facebook.
[0:12:00 – 0:12:01] Adam: Printed.
[0:12:01 – 0:12:03] Adam: No, it’s digital Facebook.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:04] Adam: We’re real time.
[0:12:04 – 0:12:05] Adam: We are live and real.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:08] Adam: High speed internet here at Studio K. Yes.
[0:12:08 – 0:12:10] Adam: We did have a power outage the other day.
[0:12:10 – 0:12:11] Adam: No internet.
[0:12:12 – 0:12:12] Adam: No lights.
[0:12:12 – 0:12:17] Adam: You curl up on the ground and just… Just lit the candle and read poetry.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:19] Adam: This is far better.
[0:12:19 – 0:12:21] Adam: This is digital Facebook.
[0:12:22 – 0:12:22] Erik: Yep.
[0:12:22 – 0:12:25] Erik: We are real and we are starting with Bill.
[0:12:26 – 0:12:31] Erik: The fishing, the wildlife, the views, and a sense of adventure.
[0:12:32 – 0:12:33] Erik: Pretty well summed up there.
[0:12:34 – 0:12:34] Adam: Yeah.
[0:12:34 – 0:12:37] Adam: I think that could be the episode title right there, Bill.
[0:12:37 – 0:12:37] Adam: We’re done.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:38] Adam: Thanks, Bill.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:39] Adam: Thanks, everybody else.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:40] Adam: Arrivederci.
[0:12:40 – 0:12:41] Adam: Bill’s the winner.
[0:12:41 – 0:12:42] Adam: Happy paddling.
[0:12:46 – 0:12:51] Adam: Josh, just returned from a fantastic four-night trip through Omega and Winchell.
[0:12:53 – 0:12:53] Adam: Nice route.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:55] Adam: Why go?
[0:12:55 – 0:12:56] Adam: In a word, disconnect.
[0:12:57 – 0:13:01] Adam: I sat with my dad and sons by a campfire without screens.
[0:13:01 – 0:13:05] Adam: We spent the day paddling and fishing without emails and text interruptions.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:08] Adam: Only stress was basic survival stuff.
[0:13:09 – 0:13:10] Adam: Wish I could live like that more.
[0:13:11 – 0:13:14] Adam: I don’t even know if the basic survival stuff is really stressful.
[0:13:15 – 0:13:17] Adam: It’s something you have to think about and kind of plan for.
[0:13:18 – 0:13:24] Adam: But, like, yeah, we’re so conditioned to, like, the everyday rigors of life being stressful that, like, are we going to find campfire wood?
[0:13:24 – 0:13:25] Erik: Yeah, right.
[0:13:25 – 0:13:26] Adam: What are we going to set up?
[0:13:26 – 0:13:27] Erik: There’s only one tent pad.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:29] Adam: Yeah, you don’t have to worry about that stuff.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:30] Adam: You’re always going to find something.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:32] Adam: But so true.
[0:13:33 – 0:13:34] Adam: No screens.
[0:13:34 – 0:13:35] Adam: Definitely no screens.
[0:13:35 – 0:13:38] Adam: Just the screen of your bug net.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:44] Adam: Keep those big bumblebees away from you, especially in the early morning.
[0:13:45 – 0:13:51] Erik: Yeah, screen off that latrine, too, to keep those big black jackets away from your butt hairs.
[0:13:51 – 0:13:52] Adam: Side question.
[0:13:52 – 0:13:55] Adam: Has anybody ever set up a screen tent around the box?
[0:13:56 – 0:13:56] Adam: I want to know.
[0:13:57 – 0:13:58] Adam: I want pictures if you have done it.
[0:13:59 – 0:14:01] Adam: Not of the… Just from far back.
[0:14:01 – 0:14:02] Erik: Yeah, right.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:02] Erik: Not too detailed.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:03] Adam: Don’t get too close.
[0:14:03 – 0:14:04] Erik: Feel free to blur anything out.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:05] Adam: I bet somebody’s done it.
[0:14:06 – 0:14:08] Adam: I would bet a large sum of money that somebody’s done this.
[0:14:09 – 0:14:15] Erik: I mean, does Coghlan’s have something that goes in the latrine to keep the bugs from getting at you?
[0:14:15 – 0:14:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:16 – 0:14:38] Adam: like a screen cone that you lay over the like a regular screen tent outside the of the realm oh like one of those little like like a like a changing hut that you used to see down in like yeah like jersey shore 1950 yeah oh okay or just any like you could have a huge screen tent set up down there i mean or up there usually
[0:14:39 – 0:14:44] Erik: I thought you were talking about something in the latrine to keep the bugs away from your butt.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:46] Adam: Yeah, like a colander.
[0:14:46 – 0:14:52] Adam: A screen colander to keep those spelunking critters away from your bum.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:57] Erik: That could not possibly get more than one use, I wouldn’t think.
[0:14:58 – 0:15:01] Adam: Hopefully they’re compostable.
[0:15:01 – 0:15:01] Erik: Yes.
[0:15:02 – 0:15:03] Adam: All right, moving on.
[0:15:04 – 0:15:09] Erik: Jesse, this sounds very personal, but we’ll shout it out anyway, to get our forest bath.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:11] Erik: Okay.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:12] Erik: Forest baths.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:16] Erik: We got some laughing heart emojis attached to that one.
[0:15:16 – 0:15:18] Adam: Tag the few people that like that one.
[0:15:18 – 0:15:18] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:15:20 – 0:15:23] Adam: Now, did any of the people that got tagged end up… Yeah, see?
[0:15:23 – 0:15:25] Adam: Somebody that got tagged there is the next response.
[0:15:26 – 0:15:26] Adam: Ooh, nice.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:31] Adam: Jessica got tagged at the forest baths comes back with simplicity.
[0:15:31 – 0:15:33] Adam: Every day is simple.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:36] Adam: Paddle, eat, swim, hammock, camp, repeat.
[0:15:37 – 0:15:41] Adam: The biggest decision to make is if we should take this campsite or paddle the next.
[0:15:41 – 0:15:44] Adam: Once we’re in the wilderness, life goes back to the basics.
[0:15:45 – 0:15:46] Adam: Indeed, it does.
[0:15:47 – 0:15:47] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:47 – 0:15:48] Adam: Nicely said.
[0:15:48 – 0:15:48] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:49 – 0:15:49] Erik: Well put.
[0:15:49 – 0:15:49] Erik: No, it’s…
[0:15:51 – 0:15:58] Erik: I think usually it takes about four or five days on those long Quetico trips that we would take where you just start really getting into the groove.
[0:15:59 – 0:15:59] Adam: Right, right.
[0:15:59 – 0:16:01] Erik: I mean… And it’s all you think about.
[0:16:02 – 0:16:06] Adam: Even these days, it takes me until like day two or three to really start to get into a rhythm.
[0:16:07 – 0:16:12] Adam: The first couple of days, I’m still sort of, you know, not my Boundary Waters self.
[0:16:12 – 0:16:12] Adam: Right.
[0:16:12 – 0:16:20] Adam: But by day two or three, usually by day three, then I’m really, ooh, totally immersed.
[0:16:21 – 0:16:29] Erik: I’m looking forward to some longer fall trips this year because I have loved the two-day outings that we’ve had and the long day trips for reasons that I have said before.
[0:16:30 – 0:16:39] Erik: But yeah, the repeat process, the more you can repeat, the better if you ask me.
[0:16:40 – 0:17:09] Erik: Carly to slow down the speed of life and drink in the surroundings and time with good friends yeah the socializing when you cut out everything else around is definitely huge for people and for me that was like one of the things that got me started in it the most I think was with friends out there in a place that was you know you’re on your own as a teenager especially so yeah
[0:17:10 – 0:17:11] Adam: I’ll just do another side note.
[0:17:12 – 0:17:19] Adam: Once you get away from the devices and the music, after especially like two days, you become your own Spotify.
[0:17:20 – 0:17:26] Adam: Does anybody else do this on trips where you just start like randomly singing little clips of songs you haven’t heard in five years?
[0:17:26 – 0:17:27] Erik: It’s amazing.
[0:17:27 – 0:17:33] Erik: We talked about this at length on our Quetico trip with Paige.
[0:17:33 – 0:17:37] Erik: We’re like, why all of a sudden did this song just pop into my head?
[0:17:37 – 0:17:37] Erik: Yeah.
[0:17:37 – 0:17:50] Erik: And then you attempt to sing it, and then for whatever reason, the lyrics, they turn into like, yeah, you’re singing that song, but they’re your own lyrics because you can’t remember them or look them up or actually listen to the song.
[0:17:51 – 0:17:52] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[0:17:52 – 0:18:01] Erik: I’m sure that happens, especially on longer trips where you’re like, I don’t know, but midnight oil, beds are burning, is stuck in my head right now, and I’m going to sing it.
[0:18:04 – 0:18:07] Adam: And then sing it again later and sing it again tomorrow.
[0:18:07 – 0:18:08] Adam: You just get stuck.
[0:18:08 – 0:18:08] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:09 – 0:18:10] Adam: Kind of develop the song.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:13] Adam: Again, it’s within your heart.
[0:18:14 – 0:18:15] Erik: All right, where are we at, Jerry?
[0:18:15 – 0:18:16] Erik: Jerry.
[0:18:16 – 0:18:17] Adam: Thanks for chiming in, Jerry.
[0:18:18 – 0:18:21] Adam: Nature and the excitement of the unknown.
[0:18:22 – 0:18:22] Adam: Ah, the unknown.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:26] Adam: Disconnect from the craziness of our environment.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:28] Adam: Plus, we love to canoe and camp.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:29] Adam: Well, that’s a plus.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:34] Adam: Yeah, if you love to canoe and camp, you found the right spot for sure.
[0:18:34 – 0:18:39] Adam: I like that you have to disconnect from the craziness of our environment.
[0:18:39 – 0:18:39] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:40 – 0:18:41] Adam: It’s a very interesting statement, Jerry.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:45] Adam: Yeah, no, it’s a very big picture statement.
[0:18:46 – 0:18:46] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:46 – 0:18:51] Erik: I mean, you, I think you could enjoy the bonjour waters without having to have a love for canoeing.
[0:18:52 – 0:19:00] Erik: Uh, that’s been, I think for me, uh, a journey that I’ve been on where I used to see it as, um,
[0:19:03 – 0:19:26] Erik: kind of the work in between the enjoyment when paddling like i it was painful and it was hard and all i want to do is just get to a campsite or get to a place where i can go and fish but i have definitely come around to actually enjoying the aspect of paddling it just feels good we’re getting some we’re getting some uh feedback from people like
[0:19:26 – 0:19:28] Adam: what do you mean you don’t bring fishing gear to the PMA?
[0:19:28 – 0:19:30] Adam: Nobody’s been to that lake in years.
[0:19:30 – 0:19:31] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:31 – 0:19:32] Adam: We don’t really fish anymore.
[0:19:32 – 0:19:32] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:32 – 0:19:39] Adam: I mean, A, who wants to carry, you would not want to carry a full size fishing gear through those bushwhack partridges.
[0:19:40 – 0:19:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:41 – 0:19:44] Adam: You sort of, everybody develops their own love of the place and,
[0:19:45 – 0:19:48] Adam: Yeah, I guess right now we’re in a state where we’re more about the travel, right?
[0:19:48 – 0:19:51] Erik: Yeah, it’s always changing for me.
[0:19:51 – 0:19:54] Adam: Than getting there and like, hey, let’s go out and catch some smallies.
[0:19:55 – 0:20:07] Erik: We were this morning just talking with Paul, actually, who donated the Medaglia d’Oro espresso instant coffee.
[0:20:07 – 0:20:12] Erik: And he had a request that the geologist’s wife be on soon to talk about the geology.
[0:20:12 – 0:20:14] Erik: And it kind of led to a conversation about…
[0:20:14 – 0:20:23] Erik: How you can almost take, you know, an endless number of things to enrich your experience even further when you’re out in the boudoirs.
[0:20:23 – 0:20:28] Erik: Whether that’s an interest in fishing, geology, the flora and fauna.
[0:20:28 – 0:20:35] Erik: And that’s kind of the way, you know, I’ve been able to, just outside of the whole backdrop of the wilderness…
[0:20:36 – 0:20:56] Erik: keep i’ve been able to keep myself fully entertained and enjoyed and looking forward to future trips by bringing in different aspects of it like oh i’m going to start paying attention to the rocks on this trip or i’m going to start looking at how the woods changes as we go up in elevation or whatever so yeah yeah like on the pma trip like oh
[0:20:57 – 0:21:24] Adam: yeah oh look at this there’s a nice white pine and oh some cedars now yeah and like look at these mosses what is with that weird lily pad or water uh grass things i would have noticed a couple years ago probably yeah paying a little more attention to it now i did a doodle in camp while we were on the pma this uh beautiful yellow flower and then like got home and like based on the doodle looked it up and figured out what it was oh nice posting that to the gram
[0:21:24 – 0:21:24] Erik: Yes.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:27] Adam: The doodle and the reveal of what it was.
[0:21:27 – 0:21:29] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:21:29 – 0:21:31] Adam: It’s an interesting… Something I totally wouldn’t have done.
[0:21:31 – 0:21:33] Adam: I would have been wasting too much time fishing before…
[0:21:33 – 0:21:37] Erik: Yeah, and it’s not to take away from fishing or whatever you get enjoyment out of.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:42] Erik: But I know that’s probably why I didn’t realize or notice some of those things in the past.
[0:21:42 – 0:21:44] Adam: They’re just all yellow flowers.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:50] Erik: Yeah, I was going to be with friends or I was going to fish or I was going for other reasons.
[0:21:51 – 0:21:57] Erik: And whatever it is, I think you need to bring something like that to the park.
[0:21:58 – 0:22:21] Erik: but we’re kind of getting off a little bit let’s get back to michael disconnect from everyday routine to spend quality time with my family also fishing fishing fishing fishing times three yep trace fishable jeremy spending time with my son it’s brought us very close and he isn’t looking at his phone smiley face
[0:22:23 – 0:22:25] Adam: Common theme, I think, yeah.
[0:22:25 – 0:22:29] Adam: People are excited to get away from the devices or these leashes we have.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:35] Adam: Once you get back to town, you know, you got to look at it again or put some pictures on it right away.
[0:22:35 – 0:22:37] Adam: But it sure is nice when you’re out there.
[0:22:37 – 0:22:39] Adam: I know a lot of people bring them out just to, like, take pictures now.
[0:22:40 – 0:22:45] Adam: A lot of people’s phones are their cameras, and they’re really nice cameras now.
[0:22:45 – 0:22:46] Adam: No need to have both.
[0:22:47 – 0:22:49] Adam: But if it’s not connected, it’s not the same.
[0:22:49 – 0:22:52] Adam: You’re not sitting there constantly, you know, twittering.
[0:22:53 – 0:22:57] Erik: When’s the last time you’ve ever heard anybody say, boy, I wish I had a camera.
[0:22:58 – 0:23:00] Erik: Where’s the camera when you need it?
[0:23:00 – 0:23:02] Erik: Where’s my 35 millimeter?
[0:23:02 – 0:23:07] Erik: Mac, it’s one of the few places my heart feels absolutely full.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:12] Erik: The lovely Danielson clan may have something to do with that as well.
[0:23:12 – 0:23:12] Erik: Wow.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:14] Erik: Thanks, Mac.
[0:23:14 – 0:23:15] Erik: It’s really nice.
[0:23:16 – 0:23:18] Adam: You want to take the next one?
[0:23:18 – 0:23:19] Adam: Sure.
[0:23:19 – 0:23:20] Adam: It’s one word from Aaron.
[0:23:20 – 0:23:21] Adam: Solitude.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:22] Adam: Yep.
[0:23:22 – 0:23:24] Adam: Aaron, have you heard about PMAs?
[0:23:25 – 0:23:26] Erik: Listen to episode 30.
[0:23:27 – 0:23:28] Erik: Solitude.
[0:23:28 – 0:23:29] Adam: Solitude.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:35] Adam: James, because it’s where I feel most at home and most at peace.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:39] Adam: Very good.
[0:23:39 – 0:23:42] Adam: You may want to consider just moving up here, James.
[0:23:42 – 0:23:46] Erik: Well, that can be a tricky option for a lot of people, but yeah.
[0:23:46 – 0:23:47] Adam: Yeah, no doubt.
[0:23:47 – 0:23:48] Adam: I understand.
[0:23:50 – 0:23:57] Adam: But yeah, it’s like, yeah, it’s really hard to go on a trip and then leave and go back to it, right?
[0:23:58 – 0:23:58] Adam: Like you’re in there.
[0:23:59 – 0:23:59] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:23:59 – 0:24:01] Adam: They’re never long enough, these trips.
[0:24:01 – 0:24:02] Erik: Trip hangover is real.
[0:24:03 – 0:24:06] Adam: You need a vacation from your vacation sometimes.
[0:24:06 – 0:24:08] Adam: Schedule an extra day in, like a buffer day.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:09] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:10] Erik: That’s tough.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:21] Erik: Cause you know, for me, the, the, the mid season peak season, two day trips where it’s like, you’re off the water next morning, you’re just right back at work.
[0:24:21 – 0:24:24] Erik: I haven’t even had an opportunity to like contemplate and like,
[0:24:25 – 0:24:27] Erik: You know, think about what I just did.
[0:24:27 – 0:24:28] Adam: Right back into the meat grinder.
[0:24:28 – 0:24:29] Erik: It’s like all of a sudden you’re right back in there.
[0:24:29 – 0:24:32] Erik: But, you know, it is what it is.
[0:24:32 – 0:24:40] Erik: Brian, the rejuvenating rest of a night in a lakeside campsite contrasted by my muscles aching from a full day’s work.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:41] Erik: Yes.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:42] Erik: Adventure.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:43] Erik: The exercise out there is.
[0:24:43 – 0:24:44] Erik: Huzzah.
[0:24:44 – 0:24:48] Erik: That is, those are the muscles that you use that are meant to be used.
[0:24:49 – 0:24:55] Erik: The adventure of discovering what is over the next hill contrasted with the immediate sense of place while I’m on a lake.
[0:24:56 – 0:25:00] Erik: Conversations and laughters with friends contrasted by the solitude of gazing at the stars.
[0:25:01 – 0:25:13] Erik: The sense of amazement that humans could find their way through this forest maze long before it was mapped, eclipsed by the amazement that God creatively built such a beautiful place where we can test our limits.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:14] Erik: Well, what, Brian?
[0:25:14 – 0:25:15] Erik: Wow.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:16] Adam: Very nicely said.
[0:25:16 – 0:25:17] Erik: Is there more than one thumbs up there?
[0:25:17 – 0:25:19] Adam: Yeah, give him an extra thumbs up, Brian.
[0:25:19 – 0:25:21] Adam: That was very eloquent.
[0:25:22 – 0:25:23] Adam: Brought it full circle.
[0:25:23 – 0:25:23] Adam: Yeah.
[0:25:24 – 0:25:31] Adam: testing your limits, being part of that continuous present of just living.
[0:25:31 – 0:25:39] Adam: If anybody stuck around to the very end of the PMA episode and you heard that Edward Abbey quote, it’s what Brian’s talking about right here.
[0:25:41 – 0:25:45] Adam: Last comment from the digital Facebook is from Jimmy.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:49] Adam: Thanks for chiming in to all of you and to Jimmy.
[0:25:50 – 0:25:56] Adam: The views, fishing, and experience are great, and in doing something most find intimidating.
[0:25:57 – 0:26:02] Adam: Bonus getting away from it all, no phone calls, emails, or bull…
[0:26:02 – 0:26:02] Adam: I’m sorry.
[0:26:03 – 0:26:04] Adam: It’s BS.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:07] Adam: You had the opportunity to keep me from using a second loon.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:08] Adam: Love the loon calls.
[0:26:09 – 0:26:09] Adam: BS.
[0:26:09 – 0:26:13] Erik: Yeah, they are fun, but… Yeah.
[0:26:15 – 0:26:19] Erik: So with that, let’s move on to digital.
[0:26:21 – 0:26:23] Adam: Question of the week.
[0:26:23 – 0:26:24] Erik: Digital Reddit.
[0:26:36 – 0:26:36] Adam: Moving on.
[0:26:37 – 0:26:40] Adam: That was a nice marimba or a rain stick.
[0:26:41 – 0:26:43] Erik: Rain stick, marimba, Morocco.
[0:26:44 – 0:26:45] Erik: It is what it is.
[0:26:46 – 0:26:50] Erik: We need more musical instruments in the studio.
[0:26:50 – 0:26:52] Erik: In studio musical instruments?
[0:26:53 – 0:26:53] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:26:53 – 0:27:00] Erik: We might have to ask Stovepipe Stevens if he can help us out on that one because I am not musically inclined whatsoever.
[0:27:01 – 0:27:03] Erik: I know it sounds good, but I cannot produce.
[0:27:03 – 0:27:05] Adam: Isn’t he coming up for a fall trip?
[0:27:05 – 0:27:06] Erik: Yeah, he is.
[0:27:06 – 0:27:09] Adam: All right, maybe we can have him live in studio for a trip.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:10] Adam: Just in the background?
[0:27:10 – 0:27:11] Adam: Yeah, future episode.
[0:27:11 – 0:27:12] Erik: Like…
[0:27:12 – 0:27:16] Adam: He can just be on the episode with us and then also play the music.
[0:27:17 – 0:27:24] Erik: He could be like the guy that does Portuguese David Bowie in the background of Steve Zissou.
[0:27:24 – 0:27:25] Erik: C’est Georges.
[0:27:25 – 0:27:30] Adam: C’est Georges, yeah.
[0:27:31 – 0:27:31] Erik: All right.
[0:27:31 – 0:27:36] Erik: We were just commenting how amazing this instant coffee is.
[0:27:37 – 0:27:41] Erik: I mean, it’s like kind of almost as good, if not better than…
[0:27:41 – 0:27:42] Adam: It’s way better than regular coffee.
[0:27:42 – 0:27:47] Adam: I haven’t had to do anything except for heat some water and then stir briefly.
[0:27:50 – 0:27:51] Erik: Thanks again, Paul.
[0:27:51 – 0:27:52] Adam: So, Paul.
[0:27:52 – 0:27:53] Adam: Can’t wait to have this out in the park.
[0:27:54 – 0:27:56] Adam: Maybe we got to have Paul on the show.
[0:27:56 – 0:27:57] Adam: He keeps gifting us up like this.
[0:27:58 – 0:28:01] Adam: He’s going to earn a seat in Studio K real soon.
[0:28:02 – 0:28:06] Adam: But, yeah, we had to go for cup number two of the DeGlagio.
[0:28:09 – 0:28:10] Adam: Yeah, that’s what it is.
[0:28:11 – 0:28:11] Erik: Moving on.
[0:28:12 – 0:28:14] Adam: Our BWCA.
[0:28:14 – 0:28:18] Erik: Got some nice comments on here from the fine Redditors.
[0:28:19 – 0:28:21] Erik: I will start because it’s a short one.
[0:28:22 – 0:28:27] Erik: I think appropriately upvoted to 15 points from MRRP.
[0:28:28 – 0:28:32] Erik: This is in the answer of, why do you visit the BWCA?
[0:28:32 – 0:28:32] Erik: Yeah.
[0:28:33 – 0:28:35] Erik: Because they won’t let me live there.
[0:28:36 – 0:28:36] Erik: Classic Reddit.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:38] Adam: Perfect.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:38] Adam: Love it.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:41] Adam: Basically.
[0:28:42 – 0:28:44] Adam: The temptation is real.
[0:28:45 – 0:28:46] Adam: The allure.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:48] Adam: That is a really good response.
[0:28:48 – 0:28:50] Adam: I can see why it got 15 points.
[0:28:50 – 0:28:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:28:51 – 0:28:55] Adam: Once again, I purposely avoided the question of the week once it was posted.
[0:28:55 – 0:28:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:28:56 – 0:28:57] Adam: I did not go and look at these.
[0:28:58 – 0:29:01] Adam: I didn’t want to taint the results or upvote things I liked.
[0:29:01 – 0:29:02] Adam: It’s nice for me.
[0:29:02 – 0:29:06] Adam: 15 points is well-deserved because they won’t let me live there.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:11] Erik: Getting a true first-time reading it response, I think, is nice, too.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:11] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:13] Adam: It’s very muy authentico.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:19] Adam: Strong contender for episode title, too, MRRP.com.
[0:29:20 – 0:29:23] Erik: We’ll have to contact him or her and see if it’s all right if we borrow.
[0:29:23 – 0:29:25] Adam: Our friend MRRP.
[0:29:26 – 0:29:30] Adam: Yeah, episode 32, because they won’t let me live there.
[0:29:30 – 0:29:30] Erik: 31, but yes.
[0:29:32 – 0:29:32] Adam: All right.
[0:29:33 – 0:29:37] Adam: Next up, moon ball winner, 11 points.
[0:29:38 – 0:29:40] Adam: The sound of the paddle on the water.
[0:29:40 – 0:29:41] Adam: The sun sets.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:44] Adam: No emails, no social media.
[0:29:45 – 0:29:45] Adam: The solitude.
[0:29:46 – 0:29:48] Adam: The lifelong friendships made out there.
[0:29:49 – 0:29:52] Adam: Dappled sunlight coming in through the trees on a portage.
[0:29:53 – 0:29:54] Adam: It’s a damn good workout.
[0:29:54 – 0:30:02] Adam: The planning, researching routes, making lists, shopping for the gear, remembering lessons learned from last year and figuring out solutions.
[0:30:03 – 0:30:06] Adam: That first cold beer and shower once you’re back in Ely.
[0:30:08 – 0:30:09] Adam: Or wherever you’re headed.
[0:30:09 – 0:30:10] Adam: Nice.
[0:30:10 – 0:30:11] Adam: Well said.
[0:30:11 – 0:30:13] Adam: I especially, boy.
[0:30:13 – 0:30:14] Erik: I like the sentence structure there.
[0:30:15 – 0:30:16] Erik: Short and sweet, baby.
[0:30:16 – 0:30:16] Erik: Short and sweet.
[0:30:17 – 0:30:24] Erik: And I love this because, I mean, you think we’re the quote unquote enthusiasts slash experts on this.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:30] Erik: The only thing that we’re experts on is the fact that we actually put together the show and put it out on YouTube.
[0:30:30 – 0:30:56] Adam: yeah i have a feeling most of the people commenting on the day on the questions of the week like if we went on a trip of them we’d be in awe yeah they’re clearly a lot of very talented people really out there doing their thing we’re not the first ones going out there we’re not the best ones going out there there’s a lot of other people that are doing it better than us and been doing it a way longer time yeah we just happen to be talking you happen to buy these microphones on new year’s eve
[0:30:56 – 0:31:20] Erik: yeah well upset well i mean what what made me think of that is the one of the aspects that i didn’t even consider is and it just really struck a chord with me because basically it is like the planning of it researching routes and i love it that’s like like almost as much fun as actually doing it like every day i work on that outfitting building across the street from the lodge
[0:31:21 – 0:31:32] Erik: And one of my favorite things to do is decompress and roll up sleeping pads because I get to do it on the map table.
[0:31:32 – 0:31:38] Erik: And so basically what I’m doing, I’m rolling them out, squeezing out the air, folding it.
[0:31:38 – 0:31:48] Erik: And the whole time, yeah, I’m working, but on the table that I’m doing it on is a bunch of Fisher maps put together of pretty much like the whole Eastern third of the park.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:49] Erik: And so I’m
[0:31:50 – 0:32:09] Adam: constantly looking at a map and i always see i always find something new yeah that’s those maps are super detailed yeah even if it’s just like well i never realized that hill was 2100 feet above sea level yeah neat so yeah the the planning of it great i love making lists yeah i love making a good list
[0:32:09 – 0:32:10] Erik: Thanks, MoonballWinner.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:14] Erik: Oh, and then, yes, the response, OMG, so much this.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:18] Erik: I’m voting that response because that’s how I feel.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:18] Erik: Yes.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:21] Erik: I was like, how did I not think of the planning aspect of it?
[0:32:21 – 0:32:22] Erik: I love it.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:24] Adam: Yeah, it’s like before you even get there.
[0:32:24 – 0:32:27] Adam: It’s already begun, the enjoyment.
[0:32:28 – 0:32:28] Erik: Do.
[0:32:28 – 0:32:28] Erik: 042-
[0:32:30 – 0:32:32] Erik: I’m not embarrassed to say it.
[0:32:32 – 0:32:36] Erik: There’s nothing better than a pit toilet with a view.
[0:32:36 – 0:32:39] Erik: Ooh, bonus mosquito bites on your ass.
[0:32:40 – 0:32:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:40 – 0:32:42] Erik: Or hornet bites.
[0:32:43 – 0:32:43] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:43 – 0:32:46] Erik: There are a few out there that have nice views for sure.
[0:32:46 – 0:32:47] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:32:47 – 0:32:51] Adam: Sometimes I’m even still planning on the latrine.
[0:32:53 – 0:32:58] Adam: I usually will bring a map up there just to enjoy looking at a little bit of the map.
[0:32:58 – 0:32:59] Adam: I can never stop looking at maps.
[0:33:00 – 0:33:05] Adam: I’m not going to just sit out here looking at warblers while I’m doing my morning business.
[0:33:06 – 0:33:27] Adam: yeah bringing up the map to the latrine in the uh i don’t know i may be the only one who brings a map to the latrine but it’s like a wilderness newspaper yeah i don’t have a newspaper i gotta look at oh look at that there’s a lake called swollen ankle lake i wonder why it’s called that yeah moving on before you get to the the next guy who does uh
[0:33:29 – 0:33:48] Erik: have some quotes this is definitely where i was going to end the show and i love to see that there are some other quotes from people out there because uh he quotes uh one of my favorites uh sig olsen but you can go ahead okay is two five points i don’t think i could say it any better than sig here we go
[0:33:50 – 0:33:58] Adam: In a wilderness, people can find the silence and the solitude and the non-civilized surroundings that can connect them once again to their evolutionary heritage.
[0:33:59 – 0:34:05] Adam: And through an experience of the eternal mystery can give them a sense of the sacredness of all creation.
[0:34:06 – 0:34:08] Adam: Wow, I have goosebumps.
[0:34:09 – 0:34:10] Adam: Can you see these?
[0:34:10 – 0:34:11] Adam: They’re big.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:14] Erik: You physically look larger now.
[0:34:15 – 0:34:17] Adam: Yeah, the scruff on the back of my neck is standing up.
[0:34:18 – 0:34:21] Erik: Yeah, it’s like you’d sense something off in the woods as a wild animal.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:24] Adam: That really touched a nerve.
[0:34:25 – 0:34:26] Adam: Thank you for that quote.
[0:34:26 – 0:34:27] Adam: And we get two.
[0:34:28 – 0:34:28] Adam: Second quote.
[0:34:30 – 0:34:32] Adam: Joys come from simple and natural things.
[0:34:33 – 0:34:39] Adam: Mists over meadows, sunlight on leaves, the path of the moon over water.
[0:34:40 – 0:34:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:41 – 0:34:42] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:34:42 – 0:34:46] Erik: I don’t know what it is about just people in general who…
[0:34:48 – 0:35:02] Erik: I mean, they’re on a different level where they can distill things and crystallize an idea that when you read it, it’s like you almost always knew it to be true, but there it is on paper.
[0:35:02 – 0:35:05] Adam: Yeah, when you read it, you know it to be true.
[0:35:05 – 0:35:12] Erik: Yeah, Sigurd Olsen is one of those guys who can do it just as good as anybody else.
[0:35:12 – 0:35:15] Adam: The park makes poets of us all, does it not?
[0:35:15 – 0:35:16] Adam: I feel like it really does.
[0:35:17 – 0:35:17] Adam: Yeah.
[0:35:17 – 0:35:18] Adam: In some way or the other.
[0:35:19 – 0:35:20] Adam: I like to draw.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:23] Adam: Some people go out there and they feel inspired to write.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:29] Erik: Yeah, it is a very inspirational place regardless of where that inspiration goes.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:33] Adam: Maybe that’s the core of my answer that I’m going to get at at the end of this episode.
[0:35:34 – 0:35:42] Adam: That it brings out the artistic beauty that humans can capture that in a way.
[0:35:43 – 0:35:47] Adam: I’m not sure that’s the most elegant way to say it, but I think you know what I’m getting at.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:50] Adam: We’re no Sigurd Olsen.
[0:35:50 – 0:35:52] Erik: No, it’s nice to have people like him.
[0:35:52 – 0:35:53] Adam: It certainly does evoke this.
[0:35:54 – 0:35:55] Adam: It brings it out in you.
[0:35:55 – 0:36:05] Erik: Yeah, no, it’s nice to have folks like Sigurd and Edward Abbey who can really, it’s not complicated.
[0:36:05 – 0:36:07] Erik: I mean, it’s right there.
[0:36:07 – 0:36:15] Erik: You know it, but they can put it into words that it’s tough to contextualize otherwise.
[0:36:15 – 0:36:18] Erik: So thanks for the quotes, OGES2.
[0:36:20 – 0:36:21] Erik: Total bogey.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:23] Erik: This is a long one.
[0:36:23 – 0:36:23] Erik: You ready?
[0:36:23 – 0:36:24] Erik: I’m ready.
[0:36:24 – 0:36:25] Erik: I’m ready.
[0:36:25 – 0:36:30] Erik: For me, it’s that sore feeling in my legs and back after a long first day of portaging and paddling.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:38] Erik: My butt hurts from sitting on the log bench but it’s preferable to trying to get up which would require moving.
[0:36:39 – 0:36:43] Erik: It’s a more accomplished workout feeling than any jog or lift set I do back home.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:49] Erik: As I watch the water in the pot just starting to simmer, my stomach is absolutely churning with anticipation.
[0:36:51 – 0:36:58] Erik: Even though my meal is just a Knorr pasta side with some canned chicken breast thrown in for protein, it’ll be one of the best tasting meals I eat all year.
[0:36:59 – 0:37:03] Erik: There’s always a post-dinner tea and hand-rolled cigarette my best friend just rolled for me.
[0:37:04 – 0:37:06] Erik: The only time I smoke is when I’m up north with him.
[0:37:07 – 0:37:15] Erik: The buzz creates a nice, slightly euphoric feeling, and I take the opportunity to look out at the lake with whatever light is left.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:27] Erik: We return to our other two campmates and start the D&D campaign that my friend has been dropping hints about since first getting on 35W North.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:29] Erik: We’re all 30, some with budding families.
[0:37:30 – 0:37:31] Erik: These moments are fleeting now.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:59] Erik: i’ll be the first one up the next morning and i’m the only angler in the group this is my opportunity i usually don’t catch anything since i’m not great at it but i still try every time the entry point changes every time but the basic formula is there i wouldn’t trade it for anything nice nicely put yeah the like the boundary waters makes everything gourmet oh yeah the the meal yeah
[0:37:59 – 0:38:01] Adam: You can be having dehydrated…
[0:38:01 – 0:38:01] Adam: Cheese.
[0:38:02 – 0:38:04] Adam: You know, casserole.
[0:38:04 – 0:38:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:38:05 – 0:38:06] Adam: It’s still gourmet.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:06] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:07 – 0:38:09] Erik: No, and I mean, I work out pretty regularly.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:11] Erik: I run and do whatever, but… You do?
[0:38:12 – 0:38:12] Adam: Nah.
[0:38:12 – 0:38:13] Adam: You are fit.
[0:38:14 – 0:38:17] Erik: But yes, the more accomplished workout…
[0:38:17 – 0:38:18] Adam: I really can’t.
[0:38:18 – 0:38:19] Adam: I cannot imagine jogging.
[0:38:19 – 0:38:21] Erik: The feeling I jogged today.
[0:38:21 – 0:38:25] Erik: Mostly to get my dog Doris a ride, a little bit of a ride.
[0:38:25 – 0:38:27] Erik: She seems like she’s just too much energy.
[0:38:28 – 0:38:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:28 – 0:38:32] Erik: Every time you walk by her, she’s just like got that like ready to.
[0:38:32 – 0:38:32] Erik: You want to go?
[0:38:32 – 0:38:33] Erik: Ready to.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:33] Erik: Let’s go.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:34] Erik: I’m ready to.
[0:38:34 – 0:38:37] Erik: So I was like, let’s just go for a run because you’re not going to just run yourself.
[0:38:38 – 0:38:40] Adam: You’re going to wreck your knees doing that.
[0:38:40 – 0:38:40] Adam: That workout.
[0:38:40 – 0:38:42] Adam: Just portage heavy things.
[0:38:42 – 0:38:43] Erik: Yeah, that’s what I’m saying.
[0:38:43 – 0:38:45] Erik: Like the workout of actually going out portaging and paddling.
[0:38:45 – 0:38:47] Adam: It’s a wholesome workout.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Erik: It’s a natural, like that’s a human workout.
[0:38:48 – 0:38:49] Adam: You’re not going to ruin your knees.
[0:38:49 – 0:38:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:38:50 – 0:38:55] Adam: You’re not going to ruin your back usually as long as you, if you have a heavy pack, have a friend to help you.
[0:38:56 – 0:38:59] Erik: But yeah, it’s a real organic workout.
[0:38:59 – 0:39:00] Erik: It’s a paleo workout.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:01] Adam: It’s a paleo workout.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:02] Adam: Yeah.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:04] Adam: Alrighty.
[0:39:06 – 0:39:07] Adam: Life worth stealing.
[0:39:08 – 0:39:08] Adam: Three points.
[0:39:10 – 0:39:16] Adam: The wilderness pilgrimage is a necessity to cleanse one’s self of banality of modern existence.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:17] Erik: Wow.
[0:39:18 – 0:39:23] Adam: Iron sharpeth iron, and the ore-veined rocks hone my mind and soul.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:31] Adam: Clear, cool lake water tightens my skin into goose pimples and squeezes my back into inner happiness and peace.
[0:39:32 – 0:39:40] Adam: Fresh, fried fish nourishes heart and head, companionship concentrates in the canoe, and bonds made there are seldom broken.
[0:39:40 – 0:39:44] Adam: The BWCA gives all one needs to be truly complete.
[0:39:45 – 0:39:45] Erik: Wow.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:47] Erik: Speaking of goose pimples.
[0:39:47 – 0:39:48] Adam: I got more goose pimples.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:51] Erik: Is Sigurd Olsen?
[0:39:51 – 0:39:52] Adam: Maybe the episode is just goose pimples.
[0:39:53 – 0:39:54] Adam: Sigurd Olsen out there.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:55] Erik: That was great.
[0:39:56 – 0:40:01] Erik: I kind of had a feeling that this episode was going to have a few moments of like, man.
[0:40:01 – 0:40:25] Erik: yeah this is great thank you life worth stealing um boy yeah you gotta now i’m kind of worrying that i didn’t write down something serious enough for the end of the episode like winging it is not going to be good enough at this point no don’t worry about it i mean yeah but life we’re stealing and if you’re if you’re not doing something that is involving um you know writing in some way
[0:40:26 – 0:40:51] Erik: maybe you should pursue that a little bit that was very well put but again it could just be the boundary waters it brings stuff out of people that makes us all artists yeah typically wouldn’t buck wild chuck to push ourselves and experience the beauty the solitude and frustrations that come with it which bring our group closer together yeah
[0:40:52 – 0:41:19] Adam: what’s this link the next one no this next one does have a link that says duh no it’s a beautiful photo it’s a picture of a couple in front of a nice backlit with a sunset sunset i assume looks like a sunset brad crc two points for that beautiful photo nicely done canoe 212 solitude yes boom it’s the first time we’ve had the exact same answer from both facebook and reddit
[0:41:19 – 0:41:19] Adam: I’m not surprised.
[0:41:20 – 0:41:21] Adam: It’s a good answer.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:21] Adam: It is.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:22] Adam: It’s a really good answer.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:25] Erik: Rye bread 26.
[0:41:25 – 0:41:28] Erik: No roads, no cars, no cell phones.
[0:41:29 – 0:41:30] Erik: Quiet fishing.
[0:41:31 – 0:41:32] Erik: Amazing scenery.
[0:41:36 – 0:41:37] Adam: Rono clock?
[0:41:39 – 0:41:39] Adam: Question mark?
[0:41:40 – 0:41:40] Adam: Two points.
[0:41:40 – 0:41:41] Erik: No, no.
[0:41:41 – 0:41:42] Erik: No question mark.
[0:41:42 – 0:41:43] Adam: Rono clock.
[0:41:43 – 0:41:44] Erik: Rono underscore clock.
[0:41:45 – 0:41:45] Adam: Yes.
[0:41:46 – 0:41:50] Adam: I go to find the humanity that gets lost in being an urban human.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:51] Erik: Ooh.
[0:41:52 – 0:41:52] Erik: Dang.
[0:41:53 – 0:41:54] Adam: This is good.
[0:41:54 – 0:41:55] Adam: This is really good.
[0:41:55 – 0:41:57] Adam: Thanks, Ronald Cluck.
[0:41:57 – 0:41:58] Adam: I can relate to that.
[0:42:00 – 0:42:04] Adam: What I just saw this week.
[0:42:04 – 0:42:05] Adam: We got another link here.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:07] Adam: Oh, no, it’s a video.
[0:42:07 – 0:42:09] Erik: I don’t know if we can watch a video.
[0:42:10 – 0:42:14] Erik: Well, let’s leave a little break here just in case we watch it and want to mention it.
[0:42:14 – 0:42:15] Adam: Hopefully we don’t get Rickrolled here.
[0:42:15 – 0:42:16] Adam: Click the link.
[0:42:16 – 0:42:17] Erik: Yeah, right.
[0:42:18 – 0:42:18] Erik: We’re clicking it now.
[0:42:19 – 0:42:20] Adam: Ooh, all right.
[0:42:20 – 0:42:22] Adam: So we did not get Rickrolled.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:25] Adam: We clicked on the video link from JFred17.
[0:42:25 – 0:42:32] Adam: It was a beautiful video of their trip, and it starts up, and we’re like, oh, it looks pretty Vento-esque.
[0:42:32 – 0:42:34] Erik: Yeah, there’s some cliffs.
[0:42:34 – 0:42:35] Erik: That looks very familiar.
[0:42:35 – 0:42:39] Adam: Yeah, and then the next shot is of Clearwater Lodge, and then a close-up of the outhouse.
[0:42:40 – 0:42:41] Adam: Oh, yeah, they held on that outhouse.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:43] Adam: Some really nice-looking Kevlar boats.
[0:42:45 – 0:42:48] Adam: A lot of good fishing for smallmouth.
[0:42:49 – 0:42:52] Adam: And, yeah, it looks like a really great trip.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:54] Adam: I like the way they ended the video.
[0:42:55 – 0:43:00] Adam: It’s just like a time lapse of the stars and then clouds moving over the stars.
[0:43:01 – 0:43:04] Adam: Did a little fly fishing down in the Brule River, it looked like.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:05] Adam: That was a…
[0:43:06 – 0:43:06] Adam: Pretty good trip.
[0:43:07 – 0:43:07] Adam: A little trout.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:12] Adam: Yeah, that’s another way to describe why you would go is in video form.
[0:43:12 – 0:43:13] Adam: Nicely done.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:21] Adam: And we would also have to say that we were looking at it and then the first comment on the video was from a user named Tumblehome.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:23] Adam: This video is from four years ago.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:25] Adam: Yeah, really weird.
[0:43:25 – 0:43:29] Adam: Who is the YouTube video, the YouTube user Tumblehome?
[0:43:29 – 0:43:30] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:43:30 – 0:43:31] Adam: It’s not one of us.
[0:43:31 – 0:43:33] Adam: We’ll go on the record and say that right now.
[0:43:34 – 0:43:38] Erik: There is also somebody on a message board that we won’t name.
[0:43:40 – 0:43:42] Erik: And their username is tumblehome.
[0:43:42 – 0:43:45] Adam: I mean, it’s a great name and a great word.
[0:43:45 – 0:43:49] Adam: So, yeah, we don’t have the market even cornered on that.
[0:43:49 – 0:43:49] Adam: No.
[0:43:50 – 0:43:51] Adam: But thanks for sharing the video.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:55] Adam: If you want to check out the whole video, go check out the question of the week.
[0:43:56 – 0:43:57] Adam: It’s on there on Reddit.
[0:43:58 – 0:43:58] Adam: Really nice.
[0:43:59 – 0:43:59] Adam: I like that.
[0:43:59 – 0:44:04] Adam: And it was set to trample like a really ââ¬â the whole video was set to a trample by Turtlesung.
[0:44:06 – 0:44:06] Adam: Awesome.
[0:44:07 – 0:44:07] Adam: What a combo.
[0:44:08 – 0:44:09] Adam: Looked like a really good trip.
[0:44:10 – 0:44:11] Erik: Hopalicious.
[0:44:11 – 0:44:13] Adam: Although I would say, I want to say one more thing.
[0:44:13 – 0:44:18] Adam: You cannot put a GoPro on the shaft of your paddle and then paddle like that.
[0:44:18 – 0:44:18] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:44:18 – 0:44:22] Adam: I almost fell off the couch in Studio K. Yeah, I kind of threw up in my mouth a little bit.
[0:44:22 – 0:44:25] Erik: It was a little disorienting.
[0:44:25 – 0:44:26] Adam: Other than that, I love the video.
[0:44:26 – 0:44:27] Adam: Yeah, it was good.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:29] Adam: But, you know, whatever.
[0:44:29 – 0:44:32] Adam: It’s a creative and interesting way to use your GoPro.
[0:44:33 – 0:44:36] Adam: But, yeah, a little disorienting.
[0:44:37 – 0:44:37] Erik: Yeah.
[0:44:38 – 0:44:39] Adam: That’s kind of what the Boundary Waters is too.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:40] Adam: Yeah, there you go.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:42] Adam: It helps to disorient the senses.
[0:44:42 – 0:44:44] Erik: It’s like putting a GoPro on a paddle.
[0:44:46 – 0:44:48] Adam: All right, Hopalicious, two points.
[0:44:48 – 0:44:48] Adam: Yes.
[0:44:48 – 0:44:51] Adam: I can’t add much that hasn’t already been said.
[0:44:51 – 0:44:54] Adam: The BWCA scratches an itch on a DNA level.
[0:44:54 – 0:44:59] Adam: It reminds me that we are not meant to be surrounded by concrete and 4G all day.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:01] Adam: That and fresh walleye.
[0:45:02 – 0:45:03] SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
[0:45:03 – 0:45:03] Adam: Yeah, yeah.
[0:45:04 – 0:45:05] Adam: Scratch that itch, Hopalicious.
[0:45:08 – 0:45:30] Erik: gosh paints with smegma i go to pan for gold to date i’ve pulled out just short of 5k old prospector yeah can’t tell you where but it’s near the gunflint yeah is it down on copper lake are you the one riding the old mines paints with smegma is john paulson
[0:45:34 – 0:45:39] Adam: Oh, I’ve been on the Frost River, see?
[0:45:39 – 0:45:42] Adam: Panning for gold since 49.
[0:45:42 – 0:45:43] Adam: Just short of 5K.
[0:45:43 – 0:45:45] Adam: Classic misdirection.
[0:45:45 – 0:45:45] Adam: Yeah.
[0:45:45 – 0:45:46] Adam: We reply, yeah.
[0:45:47 – 0:45:48] Adam: We know what you’re up to.
[0:45:49 – 0:45:50] Adam: It’s not gold.
[0:45:50 – 0:45:51] Adam: Just painting with smegma.
[0:45:51 – 0:45:52] Adam: All right.
[0:45:52 – 0:45:56] Adam: Final comment of the episode, on Reddit at least.
[0:45:57 – 0:45:59] Adam: Our good friend Rojo Ryder.
[0:46:01 – 0:46:04] Adam: Now with two points, Eric went with the click there.
[0:46:04 – 0:46:06] Adam: We got two points for Rojo Rider.
[0:46:06 – 0:46:10] Adam: It’s only been posted two days ago, though, so it’s not fair.
[0:46:10 – 0:46:14] Adam: This question’s been up for a while, so some of the ones with the bigger points have been on there for longer.
[0:46:14 – 0:46:15] Adam: That’s just the way it works.
[0:46:15 – 0:46:18] Adam: It doesn’t mean just because you have two points it’s not as valuable.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:21] Adam: You don’t have to explain Reddit to the Redditors.
[0:46:21 – 0:46:22] Adam: I think I kind of do.
[0:46:22 – 0:46:24] Adam: I’m still trying to get the handle on it.
[0:46:25 – 0:46:28] Erik: Well, it hasn’t even been up for a week, though.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:30] Adam: I go because it is so damn rewarding.
[0:46:31 – 0:46:33] Adam: you immediately reap the benefits of your hard work.
[0:46:34 – 0:46:37] Adam: It’s hard to remind yourself from behind the computer that work is rewarding.
[0:46:38 – 0:46:40] Adam: The BWCA changes that instantly.
[0:46:41 – 0:46:44] Adam: The first paddle dip in the lake rewards the planning and preparations.
[0:46:44 – 0:46:52] Adam: An hour spent gathering and processing good firewood is immediately rewarded with a crackling fire to cook your dinner and warm your soul.
[0:46:53 – 0:46:58] Adam: The work of the portage is rewarded when you set the canoe down and take your first glimpse of the next body of water to cross.
[0:46:59 – 0:47:03] Adam: A hard paddle is rewarded by covering more water and seeing more of the park.
[0:47:04 – 0:47:09] Adam: Then the whole thing is rewarded when you get to Ely or Grammaray or wherever and have an ice cold beer and burger.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:12] Adam: The best place in the world it is.
[0:47:12 – 0:47:13] Adam: Truly.
[0:47:13 – 0:47:14] Adam: P.S.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:16] Adam: My boat’s name is Advantages to Boat.
[0:47:18 – 0:47:19] Adam: I missed it in the boat show comment.
[0:47:20 – 0:47:23] Adam: Named after an LCD sound system song called Pow Pow.
[0:47:24 – 0:47:25] Adam: Keep up the good work, guys.
[0:47:25 – 0:47:25] Adam: Wow.
[0:47:25 – 0:47:26] Adam: All right.
[0:47:27 – 0:47:30] Adam: I can’t believe we made it to episode 31 without an LCD sound system.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:31] Adam: Shout out.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:32] Adam: Yeah, shout out.
[0:47:33 – 0:47:34] Adam: That’s a good way to name a boat.
[0:47:35 – 0:47:36] Erik: Advantages to boat.
[0:47:37 – 0:47:41] Erik: Yeah, and that paragraph before that was really well put as well.
[0:47:42 – 0:47:45] Erik: The benefits and the rewards that you get for the work.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:46] Erik: I like how that was all put.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:48] Adam: The best place in the world it is.
[0:47:49 – 0:47:49] Adam: It is.
[0:47:49 – 0:47:50] Adam: It is known.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:51] Adam: It is known.
[0:47:51 – 0:47:53] Adam: I’m reading the first Game of Thrones book right now.
[0:47:54 – 0:47:58] Adam: The first Dothraki mention of it is known was just had this morning.
[0:47:58 – 0:47:59] Adam: So it is known.
[0:48:00 – 0:48:00] Adam: Well said.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:06] Adam: Well, that concludes our commentary from Facebook and Reddit.
[0:48:07 – 0:48:10] Adam: And now we will attempt to wrap up the episode.
[0:48:10 – 0:48:13] Adam: That is the alarm for the end of the episode session.
[0:48:16 – 0:48:23] Adam: So the best way I can describe it, I mean, everybody has already said it more eloquently than I can ever say it.
[0:48:24 – 0:48:31] Adam: But I was just down in the Twin Cities for a conference at the Mall of America.
[0:48:31 – 0:48:35] Adam: I’ve never in my life been to the Mall of America.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:38] Adam: It’s just not what I’m about.
[0:48:38 – 0:48:41] Adam: I don’t think I need to explain that, but I’m there.
[0:48:41 – 0:48:45] Adam: And it’s like, okay, I might as well go check it out.
[0:48:47 – 0:48:49] Adam: Had a few breaks in the conference.
[0:48:49 – 0:48:51] Adam: It’s like, all right, be brave.
[0:48:51 – 0:48:54] Adam: I’m going to be brave and go take a walk around the Mall of America.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:58] Erik: So the conference center was immediately adjacent to the Mall of America?
[0:48:58 – 0:49:03] Adam: I didn’t even go outside for two whole days because it was connected by a sky bridge to the hotel.
[0:49:03 – 0:49:05] Erik: Sweet, sweet air conditioning.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:05] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:31] Adam: yeah for one it was like okay this conference was ironically connected to the like hub and heart of american consumerism which goes against everything i’m about and everything my job is really about it’s an odd choice um apparently they got a good deal on the place it’s all about the deals a beautiful hotel i don’t know yeah fine conference i i think i learned a lot it was a good experience um
[0:49:31 – 0:49:39] Adam: It was good to get out of Cook County and get south and interact with people who were in my field.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:41] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:44] Adam: The whole thing was odd to me just being in the middle of August.
[0:49:44 – 0:49:49] Adam: Most people in my job, they don’t have the spikes of tourism.
[0:49:49 – 0:49:50] Adam: This is the busiest time of year for us.
[0:49:51 – 0:49:57] Adam: To even be away from work, I felt a little guilty, let alone being away from home this time of year.
[0:49:58 – 0:49:59] Adam: We only get so much summer.
[0:50:00 – 0:50:01] Adam: Anyways, I’m down there.
[0:50:01 – 0:50:02] Adam: Going to make the most of it.
[0:50:03 – 0:50:10] Adam: But I’m literally walking around the Mall of America with my headphones in, listening to Tears for Fears.
[0:50:12 – 0:50:16] Adam: Just wandering around this maze of… Yeah, just…
[0:50:16 – 0:50:18] Adam: How many floors?
[0:50:18 – 0:50:21] Adam: It’s like four, at least four floors.
[0:50:21 – 0:50:22] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:22 – 0:50:27] Adam: I can say with confidence that the fourth floor has a number of bars where you can get beers.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:28] Adam: Yes.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:29] Adam: So I spent some time up there.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:34] Adam: Got to get some pints just to get the courage up to walk around, and I don’t even like escalators.
[0:50:35 – 0:50:36] Adam: So…
[0:50:36 – 0:50:37] Adam: Those things are death traps.
[0:50:37 – 0:50:38] Adam: Yeah, they are.
[0:50:39 – 0:50:39] Adam: It’s crazy.
[0:50:39 – 0:50:41] Adam: They let just children ride those things.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:43] Erik: Yeah, kids with like untied shoelaces.
[0:50:43 – 0:50:46] Adam: I didn’t go on any of the rides or anything.
[0:50:46 – 0:50:47] Adam: There’s rides.
[0:50:48 – 0:50:50] Adam: There’s like a million different restaurants.
[0:50:51 – 0:50:51] Adam: Ugh.
[0:50:51 – 0:50:53] Erik: How many times did you eat at Bubba Gump Shrimp?
[0:50:54 – 0:50:54] Adam: Zero.
[0:50:55 – 0:50:57] Erik: How many times did you go down the log flume?
[0:50:58 – 0:50:58] Adam: Zero.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:00] Adam: No.
[0:51:00 – 0:51:04] Adam: How many products did you buy from the As Seen on TV store?
[0:51:04 – 0:51:11] Adam: Literally, the only thing I bought, I saw a store just for my pillow, which I thought was just an infomercial.
[0:51:11 – 0:51:13] Adam: Yeah, that crazy guy from Minnesota.
[0:51:13 – 0:51:14] Erik: But it’s a whole store.
[0:51:15 – 0:51:15] Adam: Yeah.
[0:51:15 – 0:51:16] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:51:17 – 0:51:18] Adam: It was a horrendous experience.
[0:51:19 – 0:51:22] Adam: The conference was good, but the Mall of America was terrifying.
[0:51:23 – 0:51:24] Adam: I will never go back.
[0:51:24 – 0:51:25] Erik: It is terrifying.
[0:51:25 – 0:51:31] Erik: I hate that that’s like one of the first things people think of when they think of the Twin Cities and Minnesota.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:34] Adam: You got the light rail connection right to the MSP.
[0:51:35 – 0:51:36] Erik: The world’s biggest mall.
[0:51:36 – 0:51:44] Adam: Literally the only thing I bought in the Mall of America was like several pints of beers from the various fourth floor bars you could get to.
[0:51:45 – 0:51:47] Adam: You didn’t buy anything to bring home.
[0:51:47 – 0:51:48] Adam: No.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:48] Adam: Okay.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:49] Adam: I didn’t bring anything home.
[0:51:51 – 0:51:52] Adam: Uh, Natalie was with me.
[0:51:52 – 0:51:54] Adam: She got a few nice things.
[0:51:54 – 0:51:55] Adam: There’s a fall Raven store.
[0:51:56 – 0:51:56] Adam: Ooh.
[0:51:56 – 0:52:00] Adam: Um, they were playing Tim Heidecker apparently when she was in the Raven star.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:01] Adam: That’s awesome.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:02] Adam: That was the highlight of the mall for me.
[0:52:02 – 0:52:04] Adam: I didn’t even get to experience it, but I heard about it.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:06] Adam: So, um, um,
[0:52:07 – 0:52:13] Adam: Yeah, so anyways, that’s a long-winded way of saying, like, I’m really happy to be home.
[0:52:13 – 0:52:18] Adam: Like, it was great to get back to the North Shore and back home, back up here.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:25] Adam: But I think that’s just kind of the reverse way of saying what everybody else has been saying in this episode.
[0:52:25 – 0:52:26] Adam: Like, why do you like being up here?
[0:52:26 – 0:52:28] Adam: Because I don’t like being in the Mall of America.
[0:52:29 – 0:52:31] Adam: Yeah, why do you visit the Bonshu Hunters?
[0:52:31 – 0:52:32] Adam: That’s why I moved up here.
[0:52:33 – 0:52:35] Adam: I mean, that’s even a bigger question.
[0:52:35 – 0:52:36] Adam: Why do you visit the Boundary Waters?
[0:52:36 – 0:52:37] Adam: Why did I move up here?
[0:52:38 – 0:52:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:38 – 0:52:41] Adam: To get away from crap like the Mall of America.
[0:52:41 – 0:52:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:41 – 0:52:49] Adam: As much as it was kind of funny to walk around it for a few hours, it’s still, I’m glad to be back home.
[0:52:49 – 0:52:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:50] Adam: I’ll leave it at that.
[0:52:51 – 0:53:00] Erik: No, I think the reason that you visit the Bajoers and the reason that you live adjacent to it is because it’s not the Mall of America.
[0:53:00 – 0:53:03] Erik: There’s more than that.
[0:53:03 – 0:53:06] Adam: It’s not just that it’s not the Mall of America, right?
[0:53:07 – 0:53:07] Adam: It’s so much better.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:09] Adam: It’s what we all should be doing.
[0:53:09 – 0:53:14] Adam: And then somehow the Mall of America became a thing that people do for fun.
[0:53:16 – 0:53:18] Adam: That burns me up a little.
[0:53:19 – 0:53:21] Adam: That is the norm.
[0:53:21 – 0:53:24] Adam: The Boundary Waters is the thing you get away to do.
[0:53:24 – 0:53:26] Erik: We could really go off on a tangent here to talk about that.
[0:53:26 – 0:53:30] Adam: We could, and that’s kind of what this episode’s about, and I don’t want to get too deep into this, but… Yeah.
[0:53:31 – 0:53:37] Adam: The fact that, like, what most people’s lives are revolved around is, like, traffic and commerce.
[0:53:37 – 0:53:37] Adam: Yeah.
[0:53:38 – 0:53:41] Adam: And being trapped indoors for 40 hours straight.
[0:53:42 – 0:53:43] Adam: And sky bridges.
[0:53:44 – 0:53:44] Erik: Yeah.
[0:53:45 – 0:53:45] Erik: Ugh.
[0:53:45 – 0:53:46] Erik: Yeah.
[0:53:46 – 0:53:47] Erik: No, I don’t know.
[0:53:47 – 0:53:48] Erik: It’s…
[0:53:49 – 0:53:51] Adam: It opened my eyes a little bit, even though I knew about it, right?
[0:53:51 – 0:53:53] Erik: Well, yeah, you have to see it to believe it.
[0:53:54 – 0:53:59] Erik: And there are people that that’s on their list.
[0:54:00 – 0:54:02] Erik: That’s a destination.
[0:54:02 – 0:54:09] Erik: They will take time off work and fly to Minneapolis to go to the Mall of America.
[0:54:09 – 0:54:09] Erik: All right.
[0:54:09 – 0:54:10] Erik: Sure.
[0:54:10 – 0:54:10] Erik: I mean.
[0:54:10 – 0:54:13] Adam: I seriously was lost numerous times.
[0:54:13 – 0:54:16] Adam: If they didn’t have the little touch screen things where you’d be like, where am I?
[0:54:16 – 0:54:17] Adam: I have a really good sense of direction.
[0:54:18 – 0:54:19] Adam: This is what it gets to.
[0:54:20 – 0:54:21] Adam: I have a good sense of direction.
[0:54:21 – 0:54:28] Adam: If I’m in the Boundary Waters and I’m blindfolded, you could spin me around, Eric, which way is north, and I’d literally point at Polaris every single time.
[0:54:28 – 0:54:34] Adam: You put me in the Mall of America for five minutes, and now it’s like, Natalie, oh, God, where am I?
[0:54:34 – 0:54:35] Adam: Which way is the hotel?
[0:54:35 – 0:54:36] Adam: I got to get out of here.
[0:54:36 – 0:54:37] Erik: It’s very unnatural.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:39] Adam: Yeah, no, it’s really odd.
[0:54:39 – 0:54:46] Adam: Like, the angles that they built it at, too, the fact that you can’t see the stars or the sky at all, there’s no windows at all.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:49] Erik: There are windows in whatever it is now.
[0:54:49 – 0:54:50] Erik: It used to be Camp Snoopy.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:52] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:54:52 – 0:54:55] Adam: I never even made it to the other side of the mall.
[0:54:55 – 0:54:58] Adam: I kind of stayed on my safe side of the mall.
[0:54:58 – 0:54:59] Adam: I can’t believe I’m even saying that.
[0:55:00 – 0:55:01] Erik: The safe side of the mall.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:02] Adam: I stayed on my side of the mall.
[0:55:02 – 0:55:03] Adam: You didn’t go to…
[0:55:03 – 0:55:07] Adam: I should have tied a tether to myself or left breadcrumbs or something.
[0:55:08 – 0:55:23] Erik: underwater land or whatever the aquarium is i never even saw an aquarium there’s an aquarium there’s an aquarium jesus it’s actually it’s actually okay that’s fun actually because it’s you know i like the big lego things there’s some cool big lego sculptures i don’t know
[0:55:23 – 0:55:24] Adam: It was insane.
[0:55:24 – 0:55:26] Adam: I was just going to say, it’s insane.
[0:55:26 – 0:55:27] Adam: It’s way too much.
[0:55:27 – 0:55:29] Erik: It is insane, and it’s just growing.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:33] Erik: I mean, every time you drive by there to go to the airport, there is… We went in the L.L.
[0:55:33 – 0:55:33] Adam: Bean.
[0:55:34 – 0:55:38] Adam: They had a crappy, like, what do you call it?
[0:55:38 – 0:55:41] Adam: Not the gel coat, but the… Royal X.
[0:55:41 – 0:55:44] Adam: The Royal X canoe.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:46] Adam: $9.99 for a new Royal X canoe.
[0:55:47 – 0:55:49] Erik: Who’s buying a $1,000 canoe from a Mall of America L.L.
[0:55:49 – 0:55:50] Adam: Bean store?
[0:55:50 – 0:55:51] Adam: Yeah, I know.
[0:55:53 – 0:56:11] Adam: yeah this is me this is the sound of me pounding my head into the microphone right now thinking about that canoe in the mall of america that poor canoe has probably been there for five years yeah and then if anybody ever does buy it they’re probably gonna portage it with two people under it yeah you got portaged out to the parking garage yeah i don’t know it’s madness man it’s
[0:56:12 – 0:56:34] Adam: pure madness pure madness and uh yeah i think that’s you know i think that that is a your way of describing it and i think it’s a good way the normal should be the natural way the way we used to live you know i’m reading the game of thrones the dothraki say that every major act of importance should take place under a clear open sky
[0:56:34 – 0:56:41] Adam: The fact that I was stuck inside for that long and then didn’t even notice it until I was like, I haven’t been outside in two days.
[0:56:41 – 0:56:42] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:42] Adam: Starting to get an itch.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:43] Adam: That’s weird.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:44] Adam: Blinking a lot.
[0:56:44 – 0:56:46] Adam: I turned into some sort of weird mole person.
[0:56:47 – 0:56:47] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:56:47 – 0:56:50] Adam: I mean, yeah, I was able to get some sushi.
[0:56:50 – 0:56:51] Adam: That was great.
[0:56:51 – 0:56:52] Adam: I got sushi and beer.
[0:56:52 – 0:56:53] Adam: That’s the only thing I bought.
[0:56:54 – 0:56:55] Adam: I didn’t buy anything I took with me.
[0:56:55 – 0:56:57] Erik: There are some modern conveniences that are nice.
[0:56:58 – 0:57:07] Erik: Not to go again off on too much of a tangent, but it is nice to like visit the city.
[0:57:07 – 0:57:09] Erik: Not necessarily the mall of America.
[0:57:09 – 0:57:12] Erik: I think that’s a bad example of what a city can be.
[0:57:12 – 0:57:13] Adam: It’s the extreme.
[0:57:15 – 0:57:24] Erik: Like I just booked a trip to New York City because I feel like it’s on the opposite end of the spectrum for me in terms of like
[0:57:26 – 0:57:31] Erik: It’s one of the wildest urban places that you can go to.
[0:57:32 – 0:57:36] Erik: Some of the things that I love about the Boundary Waters exist in that city.
[0:57:37 – 0:57:44] Adam: And isn’t part of it, too, to really appreciate the Boundary Waters, you once in a while got to dip your toe in the big city, right?
[0:57:44 – 0:57:45] Erik: Exactly.
[0:57:45 – 0:57:46] Erik: That’s what I was getting to.
[0:57:46 – 0:57:50] Adam: You can’t have the enjoyment of winter unless you get too hot in the summer sometimes.
[0:57:51 – 0:57:52] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:57:52 – 0:58:00] Erik: And that’s, you know, it is a really fun city and I love, you know, eating and drinking and just exploring in general.
[0:58:01 – 0:58:02] Erik: So that’s there.
[0:58:02 – 0:58:04] Erik: But then, yeah, it is also the…
[0:58:06 – 0:58:09] Erik: Let’s not take this place for granted too much.
[0:58:10 – 0:58:14] Erik: If you just never leave, you know, you’d just be like, well, this is what it is.
[0:58:14 – 0:58:15] Erik: It’s no worry.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:18] Erik: It’s some woods, whatever.
[0:58:19 – 0:58:30] Erik: So, yeah, getting out and actually seeing what the majority of the population works with on a day-to-day basis and then coming home to it, you’re like, man.
[0:58:31 – 0:58:37] Adam: Yeah, like when you hit 61, coming up the shore again after a stint in the cities, it’s a real breath of fresh air.
[0:58:37 – 0:58:40] Adam: Even if you get behind some camper doing 45.
[0:58:40 – 0:58:41] Adam: Yeah.
[0:58:42 – 0:58:44] Adam: You’re like, ah, it’s good to be back.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:48] Erik: Yeah, every time you cross into Cook County right there at those red pines.
[0:58:48 – 0:58:51] Adam: Yeah, I always count it once you get through the second tunnel.
[0:58:51 – 0:58:53] Adam: You’re like, all right, I made it.
[0:58:54 – 0:58:55] Erik: After the second passing lane.
[0:58:55 – 0:58:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:58:56 – 0:58:56] Erik: Yeah.
[0:58:56 – 0:58:57] Adam: All right.
[0:58:58 – 0:58:59] Erik: Yeah, so…
[0:58:59 – 0:59:02] Adam: So that was a roundabout way of getting to the same question.
[0:59:02 – 0:59:05] Adam: I think you have a nicer way of saying it.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:07] Erik: I don’t know if it’s nicer.
[0:59:07 – 0:59:12] Erik: I think everybody, again, like you were talking about earlier, everybody has a different way of expressing themselves.
[0:59:12 – 0:59:26] Erik: And that’s, I think, the underlying beauty of the park is it pulls out the best parts in everybody and parts that you don’t necessarily know are always there.
[0:59:26 – 0:59:32] Erik: So it’s nice to be able to visit and talk with those parts of yourself.
[0:59:32 – 0:59:39] Erik: But yeah, so I did write a little blog just trying to understand some of these questions that I’ve been asking myself.
[0:59:40 – 0:59:50] Erik: I started with asking myself, you know, why just in general was this place and other wilderness areas ever set aside?
[0:59:50 – 0:59:51] Erik: you know, in general.
[0:59:51 – 0:59:55] Erik: And like, I think too often people just assume that they’ve always been around.
[0:59:56 – 1:00:00] Erik: They’re just, you know, it’s just because it’s a, it’s kind of a wild area.
[1:00:00 – 1:00:00] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:00:00 – 1:00:03] Erik: And they just decided to designate it as a wilderness.
[1:00:03 – 1:00:09] Erik: Like, you know, if you’ve never actually read the Wilderness Act of 1964, it’s actually pretty interesting.
[1:00:10 – 1:00:13] Erik: But it was a lot of work that
[1:00:13 – 1:00:36] Erik: had to go into protecting these areas and specifically to the barge waters um one of the previous commenters on reddit quoted sigurd olsen and they did yes he has a really good way of you know dude can write yeah dude has a way with the words for something as like vague and
[1:00:39 – 1:00:53] Erik: The woods and the water up here, the way that he can kind of crystallize those thoughts, and like we said before, boil it down into a quote that you just know has always been true.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:57] Erik: So there’s two whys I was asking myself, and one was the why…
[1:00:58 – 1:01:03] Erik: Why does it exist at all, and why do I keep going back?
[1:01:04 – 1:01:13] Erik: And so I’m going to read a quote from Sig as to why it exists, and then I’m going to read a quote from myself as to why I keep going back.
[1:01:13 – 1:01:15] Erik: So this is from Sigurd Olsson.
[1:01:16 – 1:01:21] Erik: And so when we talk about intangible values, remember that they cannot be separated from the others.
[1:01:22 – 1:01:32] Erik: The conversation, the conservation of waters, forests, soils, and wildlife are all involved with the conservation of the human spirit.
[1:01:33 – 1:01:40] Erik: The goal we all strive towards is happiness, contentment, the dignity of the individual, and the good life.
[1:01:41 – 1:01:46] Erik: The goal will elude us forever if we forget the importance of the intangibles.
[1:01:48 – 1:01:48] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:50] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:58] Erik: And the intangibles, which is, I think for me, you can’t point to one thing.
[1:01:58 – 1:01:59] Erik: It is the intangibles.
[1:01:59 – 1:02:07] Erik: It is the small things, the morning mists, the things you don’t expect to
[1:02:09 – 1:02:11] Erik: that will bring us all to happiness.
[1:02:11 – 1:02:17] Erik: So why it exists, that’s about as well as I could ever sum it up there.
[1:02:18 – 1:02:20] Erik: Why do I keep going back?
[1:02:21 – 1:02:24] Erik: It’s one of those things where it’s like, hey, I’ve been to San Francisco.
[1:02:25 – 1:02:27] Erik: Kind of saw that, did that.
[1:02:27 – 1:02:30] Erik: I’ve been to this state park.
[1:02:30 – 1:02:37] Erik: I’ve been to this place, you know, unless it’s like a regular thing where family, friends, you get together.
[1:02:37 – 1:02:42] Adam: There’s a lot of places where you’re like, hey, I’ve always wanted to see it.
[1:02:42 – 1:02:43] Adam: Yep, saw it.
[1:02:43 – 1:02:43] Adam: I’ve seen it.
[1:02:44 – 1:02:45] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:02:45 – 1:02:46] Adam: Probably never go back.
[1:02:46 – 1:02:47] Adam: Right, exactly.
[1:02:47 – 1:02:48] Adam: There’s so many other places to see it.
[1:02:48 – 1:02:49] Erik: It’s like, yeah, it was on the bucket list.
[1:02:50 – 1:02:50] Erik: Checked it off.
[1:02:50 – 1:02:51] Erik: Saw it.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:51] Erik: Done it.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:52] Erik: Dunt it.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:53] Erik: Took the Leaning Tower of Pisa or whatever.
[1:02:53 – 1:02:55] Erik: It’s like, yep, there it is.
[1:02:55 – 1:02:55] Erik: Okay, let’s go.
[1:02:55 – 1:02:57] Erik: That’s crazy.
[1:02:57 – 1:03:01] Erik: But, you know, and I’m somebody that I know at this point.
[1:03:01 – 1:03:02] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:03:02 – 1:03:03] Erik: You know, I’ve never sat down and…
[1:03:04 – 1:03:10] Erik: Completely figured myself out, but I know at the very least that I have a pretty short attention span with things.
[1:03:11 – 1:03:15] Erik: And part of the reason why I live and work up here is because of the work.
[1:03:15 – 1:03:17] Erik: It’s very unique.
[1:03:17 – 1:03:23] Erik: It doesn’t bore me quickly as, you know, your 40 hour a week kind of same thing.
[1:03:24 – 1:03:25] Erik: I’ve worked those kinds of jobs.
[1:03:26 – 1:03:37] Erik: And so to, to find a place that has continually drawn me back and almost every year excites me more really, I mean, it must mean something.
[1:03:38 – 1:03:38] Erik: Um,
[1:03:40 – 1:03:48] Erik: And from the beginning, just in terms of the why, it was high school, planning a trip with friends.
[1:03:49 – 1:04:00] Erik: It was almost one of those things where it’s like, well, it’s kind of an excuse to just be unsupervised and drink, which honestly is kind of what the main reason that drew me to it for the first few times.
[1:04:00 – 1:04:02] Erik: It was like, well, we don’t have to hide our drinking.
[1:04:02 – 1:04:03] Adam: Get out in the middle of the woods.
[1:04:04 – 1:04:06] Erik: Yeah, get out in the woods and drink with your friends.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:07] Erik: You’re 18, whatever.
[1:04:07 – 1:04:08] Adam: Jump in the lake naked if you want.
[1:04:09 – 1:04:09] Erik: Yeah.
[1:04:09 – 1:04:15] Erik: And then from that, which everybody needs an in, that was my in.
[1:04:17 – 1:04:20] Erik: But then over the years, there’s always been something else.
[1:04:21 – 1:04:25] Erik: Every time you think you’re like, well, yeah, I’ve been to that area.
[1:04:26 – 1:04:40] Erik: But I’ve always found something, you know, whether it was getting hardcore into fishing, paddling extreme distances, sacrificing my body to the limits of paddling for a month in October.
[1:04:41 – 1:04:50] Erik: There’s always been something, you know, and just recently the geology and the talk of dolmens, which is a little teaser.
[1:04:50 – 1:04:56] Erik: There are some folks coming up soon that are, they specialize in these things and
[1:04:57 – 1:04:57] Erik: Manerians?
[1:04:57 – 1:04:59] Erik: Yeah, Manerians.
[1:04:59 – 1:05:01] Adam: The Manerians are on their way.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:17] Erik: The geologist’s wife knows them, and we might be getting in touch to go do a little exploratory talk and walk about and maybe some work around the manure that is the dolmen, or not the dolmen, but the magnetic rock.
[1:05:17 – 1:05:18] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[1:05:18 – 1:05:20] Erik: We’ll keep you updated on that.
[1:05:20 – 1:05:22] Erik: Awesome.
[1:05:22 – 1:05:23] Adam: Yeah, there’s always something.
[1:05:23 – 1:05:24] Erik: There’s always something.
[1:05:24 – 1:05:25] Erik: There’s always something.
[1:05:26 – 1:05:30] Adam: And I was going through… Just out there on the horizon at the end of the lake.
[1:05:31 – 1:05:32] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:32 – 1:05:34] Erik: And I was going through some of my previous…
[1:05:35 – 1:05:47] Erik: I wasn’t actually going through it, but in this asking myself why, kind of a trip into Quetico the last time we were up there, a day, a journal entry that I made kind of came to mind.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:52] Erik: And it was just the last paragraph from that entry.
[1:05:52 – 1:06:05] Erik: We had been camped out on Darkie, now Darkwater Lake, and took a little day trip up to a lake north of there while we were kind of waiting out some weather and rain.
[1:06:06 – 1:06:08] Erik: And this is what I had to say at the end of that day.
[1:06:08 – 1:06:12] Erik: And this was almost five years ago now.
[1:06:13 – 1:06:16] Erik: And it almost seems like I had it pretty well figured out back then.
[1:06:16 – 1:06:18] Erik: So this is what I had to say after that day.
[1:06:19 – 1:06:24] Erik: As I lay in my tent, listening to the periods of heavy rain resume, I think about that mud hole.
[1:06:25 – 1:06:30] Erik: Maybe it doesn’t have to contain any fish or incredible campsites to still have something to offer.
[1:06:30 – 1:06:32] Erik: I realize we have been overthinking it.
[1:06:33 – 1:06:38] Erik: We ventured to an unnamed dead-end lake in hopes of fishing and maybe a neat campsite.
[1:06:39 – 1:06:44] Erik: But deep down, I know, we went up there for something bigger, yet simpler.
[1:06:45 – 1:06:46] Erik: It’s the same reason we’re on this trip.
[1:06:47 – 1:06:48] Erik: Because it’s there.
[1:06:49 – 1:06:51] Erik: And in experiencing it, we can better understand it.
[1:06:52 – 1:06:54] Erik: Staring at maps can only get you so far.
[1:06:55 – 1:07:00] Erik: This morning, I knew there was an unnamed lake separated by three portages north of Darkie Lake.
[1:07:01 – 1:07:02] Erik: Now I know what it looks like.
[1:07:03 – 1:07:05] Erik: So I think it’s the…
[1:07:07 – 1:07:23] Erik: I think it’s the exploring new territory and adding it to the list in my head of what it looks like that keeps bringing me back.
[1:07:25 – 1:07:33] Erik: That’s still always underlying, bringing something new to it, whether it’s spooky dolmens, PMAs.
[1:07:34 – 1:07:36] Erik: Adding it, coloring in the map as it were.
[1:07:36 – 1:07:40] Adam: It sounds a lot like why we went to Hairy Lake a couple weeks ago.
[1:07:40 – 1:07:40] Erik: Yeah.
[1:07:41 – 1:07:41] Adam: It’s out there.
[1:07:42 – 1:07:43] Adam: Nobody’s been up there.
[1:07:43 – 1:07:43] Erik: Yeah.
[1:07:44 – 1:07:44] Erik: Let’s go check it out.
[1:07:46 – 1:07:47] Adam: And we found it.
[1:07:47 – 1:07:48] Erik: Yeah, we did.
[1:07:48 – 1:07:53] Adam: With a little help from our GPS and whatnot, but still, we found it.
[1:07:54 – 1:07:57] Adam: And I feel like it’s like, why do you go out there?
[1:07:57 – 1:07:58] Adam: Because it’s out there.
[1:07:59 – 1:07:59] Adam: I want to see it.
[1:08:00 – 1:08:01] Erik: Because it’s there and I want to see it.
[1:08:01 – 1:08:01] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:01 – 1:08:02] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:03 – 1:08:03] Erik: That’s my answer.
[1:08:04 – 1:08:21] Adam: huh i like it so i think we’ve uh summed up as best we can the why this is maybe another uh the why i think this is gonna have to be an episode every season we’ll do this at the like around labor day every year why why are you going this year
[1:08:22 – 1:08:50] Adam: yeah maybe it doesn’t have to be as big picture going forward like what are you looking for this season yeah what’s your trip about like why are you going to this area but it’s always kind of the same uh the same question right and it’s like uh you know they said earlier the preparation looking at the map planning like where are we going to go next somebody just put a picture on our instagram i was looking at and it was like all their different routes labeled by year on a big fisher map that’s cool
[1:08:50 – 1:08:54] Adam: Yeah, it’s really cool to see the overlap and where they’ve gone over the years.
[1:08:55 – 1:08:56] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:08:56 – 1:08:57] Adam: There’s something to it.
[1:08:58 – 1:09:00] Adam: It’s, I think, in human nature to want to explore, right?
[1:09:01 – 1:09:02] Erik: I think so.
[1:09:03 – 1:09:03] Adam: The unknown.
[1:09:03 – 1:09:09] Adam: I think that was the first response on Facebook about the unknown.
[1:09:10 – 1:09:12] Erik: Let’s get to Mars.
[1:09:12 – 1:09:13] Erik: Absolutely.
[1:09:13 – 1:09:14] Adam: We’re going to get there.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:14] Adam: We will.
[1:09:15 – 1:09:16] Adam: We sent our robot.
[1:09:17 – 1:09:17] Adam: We’ll be there soon.
[1:09:18 – 1:09:23] Erik: Well, I think we did our best there between me and you and all the fellow listeners.
[1:09:23 – 1:09:24] Adam: Yeah, I’m pretty happy with it.
[1:09:24 – 1:09:27] Adam: I mean, it’s such a big question.
[1:09:27 – 1:09:28] Adam: Like, can you ever really do it justice?
[1:09:29 – 1:09:29] Adam: Probably not.
[1:09:29 – 1:09:35] Erik: I mean, I like that there was somebody else that had the Sigurd Olsson quotes.
[1:09:36 – 1:09:40] Erik: If you haven’t heard of him or haven’t read any of his works, highly recommended.
[1:09:41 – 1:09:43] Adam: Plenty of… Yeah, feels super appropriate.
[1:09:44 – 1:10:06] Erik: details out there to find him if you ever you mean he’s got a lot of books that he’s written but if you ever get the chance to read the biography on him it’s very good and it really well put together in terms of the what would seem boring you know the the fight to to protect the area back in the 60s and what you know what that all took um
[1:10:07 – 1:10:13] Erik: At one point they burned him in effigy in like main streets of, uh, Ely.
[1:10:14 – 1:10:24] Erik: His house had multiple bricks thrown through the windows because of local interests that didn’t want their logging resort fishing camps all taken away.
[1:10:24 – 1:10:29] Erik: So if you ever get the chance to read the biography on Sigurd Olsson, highly recommend that.
[1:10:29 – 1:10:30] Erik: But, um,
[1:10:31 – 1:10:35] Erik: With that in mind, that’s kind of a nice segue into just another shout out.
[1:10:36 – 1:10:36] Erik: Yeah.
[1:10:37 – 1:10:39] Erik: To the… People doing good work.
[1:10:39 – 1:10:45] Erik: People doing good work and not letting it just go slipping under the rug.
[1:10:45 – 1:10:51] Erik: The two guys at Seventh Generation Films.
[1:10:51 – 1:10:55] Erik: Their Kickstarter that I talked about a couple weeks ago was successful and
[1:10:56 – 1:10:56] Adam: All right.
[1:10:56 – 1:11:00] Erik: Yeah, they raised well over their goal of $50,000.
[1:11:00 – 1:11:01] Erik: I think they ended at $58,000.
[1:11:01 – 1:11:04] Adam: I’m sure some people listening to this have contributed.
[1:11:04 – 1:11:05] Adam: I know you did.
[1:11:06 – 1:11:07] Erik: I did, yes.
[1:11:07 – 1:11:12] Erik: Clearwater donated a few stays at the lodge and cabin, and I personally donated.
[1:11:12 – 1:11:13] Erik: It was a good cause.
[1:11:13 – 1:11:13] Erik: It seems like…
[1:11:14 – 1:11:16] Erik: I cannot wait to see this film.
[1:11:16 – 1:11:16] Erik: It looks good.
[1:11:16 – 1:11:26] Erik: I mean, that was blown away the first time I saw the YouTube video of some of the videography that they were putting out there, some of the time-lapse stuff overnight.
[1:11:27 – 1:11:29] Erik: I’d never seen the way they were doing it.
[1:11:29 – 1:11:29] Erik: Nice.
[1:11:30 – 1:11:30] Erik: Nice.
[1:11:30 – 1:11:30] Erik: Yeah.
[1:11:31 – 1:11:36] Erik: So just to let anybody know, if they hadn’t seen, that was successful.
[1:11:36 – 1:11:37] Erik: So that’s a great success.
[1:11:38 – 1:11:39] Erik: Great news.
[1:11:39 – 1:11:39] Erik: Great news.
[1:11:40 – 1:11:43] Erik: And do you have anything else before we get to our blinking red light?
[1:11:44 – 1:11:45] Adam: No.
[1:11:45 – 1:11:47] Adam: We should definitely check that out.
[1:11:47 – 1:11:47] Erik: All right.
[1:11:47 – 1:11:49] Erik: We have an answering machine message.
[1:11:50 – 1:11:50] Adam: All right.
[1:11:52 – 1:11:52] Brian: Hey, guys.
[1:11:52 – 1:11:53] Brian: My name is Brian.
[1:11:53 – 1:11:57] Brian: I thought I’d give you guys a quick call at the Fact Checker hotline because I got this idea.
[1:11:57 – 1:12:01] Brian: I just got off of my Grand Portage trip over the weekend.
[1:12:01 – 1:12:04] Brian: So I thought I’d call and give you a two-minute trip report.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:08] Brian: And I thought maybe that’s something that other people might do in the future if you want them to.
[1:12:10 – 1:12:18] Brian: Hopefully short enough so it doesn’t take over your podcast, but long enough that we can all live a little bit vicariously through the various trips people are taking.
[1:12:18 – 1:12:20] Brian: So before I give you that, just a couple quick preliminaries.
[1:12:21 – 1:12:25] Brian: We did the trip in a 17-foot Boundary Waters Edition Winona canoe.
[1:12:26 – 1:12:29] Brian: We had a backpack and a day pack, so we were traveling pretty light.
[1:12:29 – 1:12:30] Brian: It was just a weekend trip.
[1:12:30 – 1:12:35] Brian: So hit your stopwatch, and I’ll try to give you a quick rundown of what we did.
[1:12:36 – 1:12:46] Brian: So on Friday, we were on McFarland Lake at 1 p.m. We didn’t take the time to orient ourselves under the overcast skies, and we paddled in the wrong direction, making it almost all the way to Pine before we figured out what we were doing.
[1:12:47 – 1:12:50] Brian: Got ourselves turned around, made it to South Follow.
[1:12:50 – 1:12:52] Brian: We took the southernmost campsite there.
[1:12:52 – 1:12:53] Brian: It’s not a bad site.
[1:12:53 – 1:12:54] Brian: It’s got great views.
[1:12:54 – 1:12:55] Brian: Nice stargazing.
[1:12:55 – 1:12:57] Brian: Believe no trace ethic, however.
[1:12:57 – 1:12:58] Brian: Not in play.
[1:12:58 – 1:13:00] Brian: A lot of garbage there, unfortunately.
[1:13:01 – 1:13:04] Brian: Saturday, we were on the water again by 8.30 in the morning.
[1:13:04 – 1:13:07] Brian: We took the fall portage on the Canadian side.
[1:13:07 – 1:13:09] Brian: It’s uphill for about the first third.
[1:13:09 – 1:13:12] Brian: There’s fallen trees all over the second third of the portage.
[1:13:13 – 1:13:19] Brian: The back third could be pretty muddy under a lot of conditions, but we hit it during dry conditions, so it wasn’t too bad.
[1:13:19 – 1:13:21] Brian: The Pigeon River was pretty low.
[1:13:21 – 1:13:23] Brian: It was flowing at 83.6 cubic feet per second.
[1:13:24 – 1:13:30] Brian: But we still had a pretty beautiful, lazy paddle all day long, the exception to that being during the English Rapids section.
[1:13:30 – 1:13:36] Brian: We had two miles where we were in and out of the canoe over and over again, carrying it along as best as we could.
[1:13:37 – 1:13:41] Brian: Incidentally, there’s no portage marked at Partridge Falls on McKenzie map number 98.
[1:13:42 – 1:13:46] Brian: If you’re doing this trip, make sure you figure out where that is, because if you go over Partridge Falls, you’ll probably die.
[1:13:47 – 1:13:49] Brian: We made it to Fort Charlotte at 2.30.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:50] Brian: There’s two campsites there.
[1:13:50 – 1:13:51] Brian: We took the Riverside site.
[1:13:51 – 1:13:53] Brian: There’s three tent platforms.
[1:13:53 – 1:13:54] Brian: You’ve got to have ropes.
[1:13:54 – 1:13:56] Brian: Your stakes won’t work if they’re, like, raised platforms.
[1:13:57 – 1:14:00] Brian: But it’s a great place to take a soak in the shallows.
[1:14:00 – 1:14:02] Brian: We listened to the rapids as we fell asleep.
[1:14:03 – 1:14:03] Brian: Perfect.
[1:14:03 – 1:14:04] Brian: Great night.
[1:14:05 – 1:14:08] Brian: Sunday, we were packed up on the Grand Porch itself by 8 in the morning.
[1:14:09 – 1:14:09] Brian: It’s 8 1âÂâ2 miles.
[1:14:09 – 1:14:10] Brian: Honestly, it’s dry.
[1:14:10 – 1:14:11] Brian: It’s wide.
[1:14:11 – 1:14:15] Brian: There’s boardwalks, there’s steps, a lot of checkpoints along the way, like Old Highway 61.
[1:14:16 – 1:14:18] Brian: It’s actually pretty easy other than the length itself.
[1:14:19 – 1:14:20] Brian: So you totally can do this yourself.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:24] Brian: We finished by 1245, put our boats in Superior.
[1:14:24 – 1:14:25] Brian: Our boat in Superior, that is.
[1:14:26 – 1:14:30] Brian: Gave a big whoop and joined the Voyagers in a little spot in history.
[1:14:30 – 1:14:33] Brian: So key takeaways are we didn’t do buttless chaffs.
[1:14:33 – 1:14:35] Brian: I’m sorry, but you can easily do this.
[1:14:35 – 1:14:40] Brian: I highly recommend people go get a rental from Clearwater, drag it over the English Rapids for a couple of miles.
[1:14:40 – 1:14:41] Brian: I’m sure Eric won’t mind.
[1:14:41 – 1:14:49] Brian: And anyone that needs more information on planning a trip like this with questions on the Pigeon River can hit me at eagle98mn.hotmail.com.
[1:14:49 – 1:14:49] Brian: Thanks, guys.
[1:14:49 – 1:14:50] Brian: Hope you liked this.
[1:14:50 – 1:14:51] Brian: I’m a little bit over, but
[1:14:53 – 1:14:55] Erik: Well, thanks, Brian, on that trip report.
[1:14:56 – 1:14:56] Erik: Awesome.
[1:14:56 – 1:14:57] Erik: Sounds like a good time.
[1:14:57 – 1:15:00] Adam: It’s really unfortunate you didn’t have buttless chaps.
[1:15:00 – 1:15:02] Adam: I hope you had a temp line, though.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:03] Erik: At least a temp line.
[1:15:03 – 1:15:08] Erik: And, yeah, if you’re going to be renting canoes from Clearwater, we prefer you dragging them.
[1:15:08 – 1:15:09] Adam: Drag them through the English Rapids.
[1:15:09 – 1:15:12] Erik: Get some aluminum canoes we could maybe set you up with those.
[1:15:12 – 1:15:14] Adam: We have to do the Grand Portage now.
[1:15:14 – 1:15:15] Adam: Yeah.
[1:15:15 – 1:15:18] Erik: It’s been a weird off-and-on topic that has come up.
[1:15:18 – 1:15:19] Adam: Always wanted to do it.
[1:15:20 – 1:15:23] Adam: I still think doing it from Grand Portage up would be funny.
[1:15:23 – 1:15:24] Adam: Just starting a trip.
[1:15:24 – 1:15:25] Adam: It would be ridiculous.
[1:15:25 – 1:15:28] Adam: I think it’s probably too low water now to try and do it this year.
[1:15:29 – 1:15:31] Adam: We could get a deluge or something.
[1:15:31 – 1:15:32] Erik: It has been pretty dry.
[1:15:32 – 1:15:34] Erik: Lakes are really low.
[1:15:35 – 1:15:36] Adam: I love that trip report, though.
[1:15:36 – 1:15:39] Adam: I hope more people use the answering machine for trip reports like that.
[1:15:39 – 1:15:40] Adam: I love that.
[1:15:40 – 1:15:42] Erik: Yeah, and he kind of did get cut off.
[1:15:42 – 1:15:49] Erik: Just know that the Google phone slash voice thing, it limits you to three minutes.
[1:15:49 – 1:15:52] Erik: So he did say set the stopwatch.
[1:15:52 – 1:15:54] Erik: You’re going to have to set your own stopwatch if you do that in the future.
[1:15:54 – 1:15:55] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:15:55 – 1:15:58] Adam: He hit all the highlights on it, though.
[1:15:58 – 1:16:00] Adam: I didn’t know they had platforms at Fort Charlotte.
[1:16:01 – 1:16:02] Adam: I did not know about that at all.
[1:16:03 – 1:16:04] Adam: I’m really excited.
[1:16:04 – 1:16:04] Adam: I want to do that.
[1:16:05 – 1:16:06] Adam: I’m putting it high up on my list.
[1:16:06 – 1:16:08] Adam: Future trips for a tumble home.
[1:16:08 – 1:16:11] Adam: I think we’ve got to do field audio from Fort Charlotte.
[1:16:11 – 1:16:12] Erik: Color it in.
[1:16:12 – 1:16:13] Erik: And the English Rapids.
[1:16:13 – 1:16:15] Erik: Get that route penciled in.
[1:16:15 – 1:16:17] Adam: Who knows?
[1:16:17 – 1:16:19] Adam: We sure appreciate you calling that one in, though.
[1:16:19 – 1:16:19] Adam: Thanks, Brian.
[1:16:20 – 1:16:21] Erik: Yeah, thank you.
[1:16:23 – 1:16:31] Erik: She didn’t have enough time to do it, but I’m going to do it for her here and fact check ourselves, the geologist’s wife, Menear.
[1:16:31 – 1:16:34] Erik: We spelled it completely wrong in the last episode.
[1:16:35 – 1:16:35] Erik: I did.
[1:16:35 – 1:16:35] Erik: Wow.
[1:16:36 – 1:16:38] Erik: Well, you had never heard of it before, so you can’t be faulted.
[1:16:38 – 1:16:40] Adam: I couldn’t even say it on the last episode.
[1:16:41 – 1:16:41] Erik: Menear?
[1:16:42 – 1:16:45] Erik: Yeah, I spelled it M-E-N-E-A-R, but it is not that at all.
[1:16:45 – 1:16:46] Erik: It’s M-E-N-H-I-R.
[1:16:48 – 1:16:48] Adam: H-I-R?
[1:16:49 – 1:16:49] Adam: Yeah.
[1:16:49 – 1:16:50] Adam: Menhir.
[1:16:51 – 1:16:51] Adam: Yeah.
[1:16:51 – 1:16:52] Adam: Menhir.
[1:16:52 – 1:16:53] Adam: Menhir.
[1:16:54 – 1:16:55] Erik: All right.
[1:16:55 – 1:17:16] Erik: I look forward to following up on the potential visit with some… She sent me the message that this woman that she’s in contact with about it, who’s going to be up here next week, and she wanted to know what the elevation was where we saw our dolmens, which is extremely helpful, she said.
[1:17:16 – 1:17:16] Adam: Ooh.
[1:17:16 – 1:17:18] Adam: I never even thought of that.
[1:17:18 – 1:17:18] Erik: Yeah.
[1:17:18 – 1:17:21] Erik: And then she said… Give some estimates.
[1:17:22 – 1:17:22] Erik: Yeah.
[1:17:22 – 1:17:24] Erik: She said that that’s important.
[1:17:24 – 1:17:34] Erik: And then she said, if I wanted to come out and work around the manure with them, there’s going to be, I forget his name, Dr. Something.
[1:17:35 – 1:18:03] Adam: um that he’ll blow my mind apparently that was the quote it’s gonna happen i don’t know i asked her i’m like when is this muneer meetup happening because i want i definitely want i am extremely interested in this somebody came over to me at work and they’re like i heard about your fines oh yeah yeah zip it anymore no i don’t i don’t know words out yeah pretty cool stuff um i’m i’m happy to hear more
[1:18:04 – 1:18:05] Erik: Yeah, I can’t wait.
[1:18:05 – 1:18:12] Erik: Considering there is literally no information out on the web besides that Kelso Lake or Kelso River one.
[1:18:12 – 1:18:14] Adam: Kelso River one I feel like is known.
[1:18:14 – 1:18:15] Erik: It is known.
[1:18:15 – 1:18:16] Erik: Yeah, it is known.
[1:18:16 – 1:18:18] Erik: But some of the other ones, you know, depending.
[1:18:20 – 1:18:45] Adam: dolman coincidence i’m pretty sure that the key is wearing buttless chaps like you never would be able to levitate those rocks up to get the smaller rocks underneath it if you have your butt covered obviously your butt needs to breathe to be able to achieve that level of levitation and that’s probably a good spot to leave this episode oh it totally makes sense absolutely yeah why would you go to the boundary waters
[1:18:45 – 1:18:49] Adam: To wear buttless chaps and levitate car-sized boulders, obviously.
[1:18:49 – 1:18:49] Erik: Yeah.
[1:18:49 – 1:18:52] Erik: Why do you go to the Bongewaters to wear buttless chaps and make dolmens?
[1:18:54 – 1:18:55] Erik: Ding, ding, veneers.
[1:18:56 – 1:18:57] Erik: It’s the true magic time.
[1:18:58 – 1:19:02] Adam: All right, well, this has been a really fun episode of Tumble Home.
[1:19:02 – 1:19:03] Adam: Thanks for being here with us.
[1:19:04 – 1:19:06] Adam: Check us out on social media.
[1:19:06 – 1:19:06] Adam: Let’s connect.
[1:19:07 – 1:19:12] Adam: Big up to anybody who’s been touching base with us on the gram or on Facebook.
[1:19:13 – 1:19:16] Adam: You can also reach us on Gmail, tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[1:19:17 – 1:19:24] Adam: You know, call the hotline, numbers in the show notes, and go check those videos out on Reddit we were watching earlier.
[1:19:24 – 1:19:25] Adam: Those were fun.
[1:19:26 – 1:19:28] Erik: Before you completely happy paddle me.
[1:19:29 – 1:19:30] Erik: I was just about to.
[1:19:30 – 1:19:30] Erik: I know.
[1:19:30 – 1:19:32] Erik: And then it would have been really awkward.
[1:19:32 – 1:19:35] Adam: I was going down the English Rapids really fast there.
[1:19:35 – 1:19:38] Adam: I was about to go over Pigeon Falls and happy paddle that thing.
[1:19:38 – 1:19:39] Erik: Yeah.
[1:19:39 – 1:19:41] Erik: There’s still a mystery out there.
[1:19:41 – 1:19:41] Erik: Oh.
[1:19:42 – 1:19:44] Erik: John and Kara.
[1:19:44 – 1:19:44] Erik: Yeah.
[1:19:44 – 1:19:45] Erik: Do you exist?
[1:19:45 – 1:19:45] Erik: Are you real?
[1:19:45 – 1:19:46] Adam: Where are John and Kara?
[1:19:47 – 1:19:50] Adam: That beer is still in the Tumble Home Studios fridge.
[1:19:50 – 1:19:51] Adam: No.
[1:19:51 – 1:19:53] Adam: Awaiting proper acknowledgement.
[1:19:54 – 1:19:54] Adam: Yes.
[1:19:55 – 1:19:56] Adam: It’s microphone brewing.
[1:19:56 – 1:19:57] Adam: We’re going to hold out one more week.
[1:19:57 – 1:20:00] Erik: One more week and then we’re drinking the shit out of that beer.
[1:20:03 – 1:20:04] Adam: We’re going to drink it next week.
[1:20:05 – 1:20:08] Adam: If you don’t call it in, we’re just going to have to attribute it to John and Kara.
[1:20:09 – 1:20:12] Adam: And that’s probably good enough, but we would like to have more of a story than that.
[1:20:12 – 1:20:13] Adam: It’s such a beautiful looking beer.
[1:20:14 – 1:20:14] Adam: I can’t wait.
[1:20:15 – 1:20:15] Erik: I can’t wait either.
[1:20:15 – 1:20:18] Adam: So yeah, please let us know.
[1:20:19 – 1:20:19] Adam: Who are you?
[1:20:19 – 1:20:20] Adam: Who are you?
[1:20:21 – 1:20:21] Adam: All right.
[1:20:21 – 1:20:24] Adam: And with that.
[1:20:24 – 1:20:25] Adam: Happy paddling, friend.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:26] Adam: Stay safe.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:28] Erik: We really stumbled out of this one.
[1:20:29 – 1:20:29] Adam: Happy paddling.
[1:20:29 – 1:20:30] Adam: Bang.
[1:20:30 – 1:20:30] Adam: Good night.
[1:20:31 – 1:20:32] Erik: Yeah.
[1:20:37 – 1:20:38] UNKNOWN: Thanks for watching!
[1:21:08 – 1:21:08] UNKNOWN: Thank you.
[1:21:28 – 1:21:29] SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
[1:22:06 – 1:22:06] UNKNOWN: Thank you.
