[0:00:39 – 0:00:43] Adam: My name is Francois Le Castor and I’ll have a biscuit too as well.
[0:00:47 – 0:00:48] Adam: We’re coming to you live from the snow globe.
[0:00:49 – 0:00:55] Adam: This is the snow log for January 24th, 2023.
[0:00:55 – 0:00:57] Adam: We have six inches of fresh snow.
[0:00:58 – 0:01:01] Adam: Brings us to 76 inches for the season here.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:06] Adam: Starting the show off with Sisters by Marie Champagne.
[0:01:06 – 0:01:12] Adam: of the greatest album of all time, Shoe Dog and Friends, 2016.
[0:01:12 – 0:01:13] Adam: Go ahead and check it out.
[0:01:15 – 0:01:15] Adam: It’s wonderful.
[0:01:16 – 0:01:17] Adam: It’s a real delight.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:27] Adam: Got myself a new Belgian accumulation here in a regular-sized can.
[0:01:32 – 0:01:34] Adam: The accumulation has been pretty steady lately.
[0:01:39 – 0:01:49] Adam: I could listen to this album just on repeat.
[0:01:51 – 0:01:54] Adam: There are no big boats left on the big lake.
[0:01:56 – 0:01:57] Adam: The big lake is empty.
[0:01:58 – 0:01:59] Adam: No big boats out there.
[0:02:01 – 0:02:05] Adam: We got a ski jour report with Terry Davenport for you tonight.
[0:02:07 – 0:02:12] Adam: Did finally get in a really nice long ski jour last week with Arrow.
[0:02:13 – 0:02:14] Adam: The champ.
[0:02:15 – 0:02:16] Adam: Pushed over 12K.
[0:02:18 – 0:02:19] Adam: Could have kept going.
[0:02:19 – 0:02:22] Adam: We were just cruising on the home trails.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:23] Adam: They were mint.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:27] Adam: The footing was excellent.
[0:02:27 – 0:02:28] Adam: The control was superb.
[0:02:29 – 0:02:32] Adam: Shout out to the local mushers for the impeccable lopping job.
[0:02:33 – 0:02:33] Adam: You know who you are.
[0:02:35 – 0:02:38] Adam: Got a bunch of local mushers here in the historic mushing district.
[0:02:39 – 0:02:42] Adam: And, yeah, there’s some really nice trails out there.
[0:02:42 – 0:02:45] Adam: But often for ski jorts, it’s like they’re too icy or whatever.
[0:02:46 – 0:02:50] Adam: But the other day, we had gotten some fresh snow.
[0:02:50 – 0:02:53] Adam: And, yeah, they had run their machine through there.
[0:02:53 – 0:02:58] Adam: And then I was basically just following, like, one set of tracks.
[0:02:59 – 0:03:02] Adam: A team of dogs had run through there with somebody.
[0:03:05 – 0:03:08] Adam: And, yeah, it was just perfect flat.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:11] Adam: Going downhill wasn’t too fast.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:12] Adam: Going uphill wasn’t too hard.
[0:03:13 – 0:03:15] Adam: You know, real dream scenario.
[0:03:16 – 0:03:21] Adam: But it was probably the longest, like, in the woods ski jour aro and I have done.
[0:03:21 – 0:03:25] Adam: Done longer out on the flat lake, but…
[0:03:26 – 0:03:55] Adam: um that’s a real fun track we did uh we’ll we’ll do that again before the end of the season that’s for sure but um yeah neighbor uh matt schmidt uh aaron ultimus they’re running the bear grease and i’m pretty sure i was following one of them on that run i don’t know who but uh there’s some other people that could have been up there too but based on where the track started i’m almost certain it was one of them out on a training run so that was pretty neat too
[0:03:56 – 0:04:20] Adam: pretty neat um now let’s lead us into our fantasy bear grease um slash bear grease preview um race is less than a week away and unfortunately it was confirmed today that there is not going to be any fantasy bear grease um so we’re i broke the news of that on the discord this morning but
[0:04:21 – 0:04:26] Adam: Anybody listening to this before the race starts, sad news, no fantasy barriers.
[0:04:26 – 0:04:27] Adam: What are we going to do?
[0:04:28 – 0:04:30] Adam: We can just pick, like, who we think is going to be in the top three.
[0:04:31 – 0:04:35] Adam: Put that, you know, in your safe space and lock that one in your heart.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:37] Adam: And we’ll all know.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:43] Adam: It’s fun to just watch the race and keep track of the tracker and cheer for a few people.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:48] Adam: But who are the true contenders?
[0:04:49 – 0:04:50] Adam: I think we got 17 people in the race.
[0:04:52 – 0:04:56] Adam: and 17 teams in the race.
[0:04:57 – 0:05:03] Adam: And how many will make it to Otter Lake on day three out of that?
[0:05:04 – 0:05:11] Adam: Um, you know, my experience, if there’s 17 teams starting, you know, 12 making it to Otter Lake would be good.
[0:05:12 – 0:05:18] Adam: Um, Ryan Anderson, you know, won it last year and was back with
[0:05:18 – 0:05:47] Adam: presumably a strong team probably a lot of the same dogs from last year but who’s to say but uh could get his fifth which would be a record i’m pretty sure there’s a bunch of mushers that have four um but yeah ryan anderson could get a fifth title at the bear grease um and i’d have to say he’s the favorite to win it based on who’s in but and and what his team looked like last season uh
[0:05:47 – 0:05:51] Adam: The only other former champion in the race this year is Keith Ely.
[0:05:53 – 0:05:58] Adam: He’s back, and I would guess top three for sure for Keith.
[0:05:58 – 0:06:07] Adam: Probably the only person out there that can realistically give Ryan Anderson a real run going into Mineral Center.
[0:06:07 – 0:06:08] Adam: We shall see.
[0:06:09 – 0:06:12] Adam: We’ve seen Keith come through early in the morning before.
[0:06:14 – 0:06:15] Adam: He has what it takes.
[0:06:15 – 0:06:16] Adam: The trail’s going to be fast.
[0:06:17 – 0:06:20] Adam: It’s been a warm winter, I think I said it on a previous episode.
[0:06:20 – 0:06:21] Adam: It’s been 33 degrees way too often.
[0:06:22 – 0:06:25] Adam: Looking ahead at the Bear Grease weather forecast, this is going to be big too.
[0:06:26 – 0:06:31] Adam: It’s supposed to be down high at one degree, low in the negative teens.
[0:06:31 – 0:06:35] Adam: We just haven’t seen a continued snap of that kind of cold this winter.
[0:06:36 – 0:06:38] Adam: That’s going to be the first one perfectly timed up for the race.
[0:06:40 – 0:07:05] Adam: um so that’s pretty sweet uh be good for the dogs um be nice for standing around the fire on the side of the trail and um most importantly though good for the dogs but fast trail it’s like you gotta you gotta have a musher that will know how to hold that team back a little bit more when the trail is going to be fast like that um so that’s why you know you’d think there’d have to be an experienced musher
[0:07:07 – 0:07:09] Adam: But there is an experienced musher out there.
[0:07:10 – 0:07:10] Adam: That is not one yet.
[0:07:11 – 0:07:15] Adam: That’s my neighbor, Matthew Carl Schmidt, which I didn’t know his middle name was Carl.
[0:07:16 – 0:07:18] Adam: But according to the Bear Grease website, it is.
[0:07:19 – 0:07:24] Adam: And him and his partner Aaron have been running the race as long as I’ve been living up here, I feel like.
[0:07:24 – 0:07:30] Adam: And they’ve always been kind of the local favorite, but now they’ve moved closer to where we live here.
[0:07:31 – 0:07:32] Adam: out east, uh, town.
[0:07:34 – 0:07:37] Adam: And so I don’t know, I’m really pulling for him, you know?
[0:07:37 – 0:07:41] Adam: Um, I don’t know, he’s, they’re a neighbor, but I don’t really know him all that well.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:45] Adam: Um, but you know, I’m still pulling for him.
[0:07:45 – 0:07:46] Adam: I’d love to see him win it.
[0:07:46 – 0:07:54] Adam: And they, uh, he won the 12 dog at the mail run and Aaron won the eight dog team, uh, at the mail run this year.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:54] Adam: Um,
[0:07:56 – 0:08:00] Adam: they’ve always done well at the mail run and, but that’s a really nice result.
[0:08:01 – 0:08:07] Adam: So you gotta think they got a strong team and maybe they, maybe this is the year, you know, uh, will this be the year?
[0:08:08 – 0:08:10] Adam: Sawtooth mountain racing.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:11] Adam: This could be the year.
[0:08:11 – 0:08:17] Adam: Most certainly they’ve run enough times to know the right strategy for that kind of trail condition.
[0:08:17 – 0:08:18] Adam: I’m, I’m certain of that.
[0:08:20 – 0:08:21] Adam: Uh, so that’s probably the top three.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:23] Adam: Um,
[0:08:23 – 0:08:25] Adam: you know, who else were we rooting for?
[0:08:25 – 0:08:25] Adam: Of course.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:35] Adam: Um, somebody I was really hoping to see last year, Jesse Terry, uh, ultimately didn’t make it to Otter Lake last year after starting.
[0:08:35 – 0:08:43] Adam: But, um, I think, I think we’ll see Jesse Terry this year and I could see a top five, uh, for that team.
[0:08:44 – 0:08:48] Adam: Uh, Errol Wallen, no doubt.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:50] Adam: I think this could be a year for Errol Wallen.
[0:08:51 – 0:08:51] Adam: Um,
[0:08:52 – 0:08:53] Adam: Always like to see him.
[0:08:54 – 0:08:56] Adam: I’ve seen him a few times now at Pronto, I believe.
[0:08:58 – 0:09:01] Adam: He’s a fun character, that one.
[0:09:02 – 0:09:10] Adam: And then, of course, another personal favorite of mine is Martin Mazikot, the Frenchman.
[0:09:12 – 0:09:13] Adam: Will they want more burger meat?
[0:09:15 – 0:09:15] Adam: One can hope.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:20] Adam: And with that, we will give a final update on the corndogs themselves.
[0:09:21 – 0:09:26] Adam: We’ll be heading out there, of course, for the Pronto Hospitality stop on Tuesday out at Outer Lake.
[0:09:28 – 0:09:31] Adam: If you’re hearing this and you’re in the neighborhood, feel free to stop on by.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:49] Adam: I got 10 breakfast corndogs, made a run down to the Twin Ports today, in fact, and got them at, I didn’t see any corndogs at Costco, surprisingly.
[0:09:50 – 0:09:52] Adam: So ended up getting them at Aldi, though.
[0:09:52 – 0:09:57] Adam: I got 10 breakfast corndog and then a dozen regular standard corndog
[0:09:58 – 0:10:02] Adam: So we will have those warming before the sun comes up on Tuesday.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:05] Adam: You never know when the first team will be through, especially with a fast trail.
[0:10:06 – 0:10:08] Adam: So really getting excited about this.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:17] Adam: It’s a couple days out now, it feels like, until the race start, and then only a couple more days until it’s time to head out to Otter Lake.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:21] Adam: So it’s going to be a real hoot.
[0:10:21 – 0:10:26] Adam: No Eric this year, which I’m trying to at least get a text to Eric of like,
[0:10:27 – 0:10:52] Adam: who do you think’s a favorite you know i gotta get a sense for who eric’s cheering for but we’ll miss them out there but we’ll have a couple people out there they’re still gonna come i won’t be standing around the trail side by myself no doubt but yeah bear grease is always a real treat in the middle of winter and um you know i’m starting to get the excitement even if there’s no fancy bear grease we’re gonna be out there and we’re gonna see it live with our own eyes
[0:10:53 – 0:10:55] Adam: That’ll conclude tonight’s snow log.
[0:10:56 – 0:10:59] Adam: Remember, snow takes many forms.
[0:11:00 – 0:11:00] Adam: Oh, wait, wait, wait.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:02] Adam: Just kidding.
[0:11:03 – 0:11:05] Adam: We’re not done because I have one more thing to tell you.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:09] Adam: According to the Bear Grease website itself,
[0:11:10 – 0:11:16] Adam: The lead dogs for Matthew Carl Schmidt in this year’s Bear Grease are as follows.
[0:11:17 – 0:11:22] Adam: Temper, Itsy, Chicken, Keith, and Pinto.
[0:11:23 – 0:11:26] Adam: All right, now that is a proper spot to leave it.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:27] Adam: Good night.
