[0:00:37 – 0:00:38] Adam: This is episode 110.
[0:00:40 – 0:00:42] Adam: Coming to you live from Studio K. My name is Adam.
[0:00:42 – 0:00:45] Adam: Joining me here in the studio is my good pal Eric.
[0:00:45 – 0:00:46] Adam: Hello, Eric.
[0:00:46 – 0:00:47] Adam: Hello, Adam.
[0:00:47 – 0:00:49] Erik: It’s a morning record.
[0:00:49 – 0:00:56] Erik: We’re still working on the leftover champagnes from our Tumble Home Cinema Classics record.
[0:00:57 – 0:01:02] Adam: It’s a great day when you’re drinking mimosas in the morning and it’s a weekday.
[0:01:02 – 0:01:07] Erik: Yeah, it’s Tuesday and I started drinking at 9.45.
[0:01:07 – 0:01:08] Adam: Tuesday is my Sunday, to be fair.
[0:01:09 – 0:01:09] Adam: To be fair, it is.
[0:01:09 – 0:01:10] Adam: So this is my church.
[0:01:11 – 0:01:11] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:11 – 0:01:11] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:01:11 – 0:01:16] Erik: It is also my, you know, easy like Sunday morning, as they say.
[0:01:16 – 0:01:16] Adam: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[0:01:17 – 0:01:20] Adam: The raspberries in the yard are looking great.
[0:01:20 – 0:01:23] Adam: There’s some blueberries out still, definitely.
[0:01:23 – 0:01:23] Adam: Yep.
[0:01:24 – 0:01:28] Adam: It’s the middle of summer and we’re going to go on a boat later today.
[0:01:28 – 0:01:29] Erik: Yeah, we’re going on a boat.
[0:01:29 – 0:01:30] Erik: We’re going to do some boating.
[0:01:31 – 0:01:32] Erik: We have a pontoon reserved.
[0:01:33 – 0:01:34] Erik: It’s a real wild card Sunday.
[0:01:34 – 0:01:35] Adam: I don’t even know what’s going on anymore.
[0:01:36 – 0:01:37] Erik: That’s great.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:40] Erik: We’re just going to be up front with you right away here.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:46] Erik: If Bonassa Umbelas is one of your favorite episodes, you are in for a treat.
[0:01:46 – 0:01:48] Erik: Because we’ve got nothing planned.
[0:01:48 – 0:01:50] Adam: There’s nothing on the agenda.
[0:01:50 – 0:02:13] Erik: nothing on the agenda there’s not your i can see your notes it’s blank like the movie surviving cricket lake this is uh this episode’s completely devoid of any script story or planning yeah you will be left uh probably mostly disappointed frustrated and then within a half hour have completely forgot that this episode i’m sure there will be memorable moments like
[0:02:13 – 0:02:26] Erik: I’m sure the amount of effort we put into the next however long this episode lasts is vastly superior to anything that surviving Crooked Lake provided us in terms of a resonant feeling of any kind.
[0:02:26 – 0:02:29] Adam: If you are a Patreon subscriber, you’ll know what we’re talking about.
[0:02:29 – 0:02:30] Adam: And we’re sorry.
[0:02:31 – 0:02:37] Adam: This episode is sponsored by our wonderful friends on Patreon who put up with our nonsense on a weekly basis.
[0:02:37 – 0:02:38] Adam: Thank you very much.
[0:02:38 – 0:02:40] Erik: We’ll do a good one next week, we promise.
[0:02:40 – 0:02:44] Erik: There’s another trauma movie that we’re thinking of doing, Decapitated.
[0:02:44 – 0:02:46] Adam: I want to do…
[0:02:47 – 0:02:49] Erik: I want to do Stand By Me because I’ve never seen it.
[0:02:49 – 0:02:50] Erik: Somebody suggested that.
[0:02:50 – 0:02:52] Adam: I want to do One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest next.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:53] Erik: Sure.
[0:02:53 – 0:02:57] Erik: For the one scene where they leave the hospital and go fishing.
[0:02:57 – 0:02:57] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[0:02:58 – 0:02:59] SPEAKER_02: It’s an outdoors movie.
[0:02:59 – 0:03:00] Erik: Yeah, for sure.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:01] Adam: That takes place in a mental ward.
[0:03:02 – 0:03:02] Erik: Yep.
[0:03:03 – 0:03:07] Erik: So, yeah, Patreon, thank you guys for letting us do what we do.
[0:03:07 – 0:03:09] Erik: And I did throw it out there.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:14] Erik: If anybody wants me to ship them the copy of Surviving Crooked Lake, let me know.
[0:03:14 – 0:03:15] Erik: I’d be happy to get rid of it.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:19] Erik: Otherwise, we are going to be destroying it with the back of a dull hatchet.
[0:03:23 – 0:03:27] Erik: We are legitimately sponsored this week by a couple of big boy beers.
[0:03:28 – 0:03:30] Erik: I believe they call these Crowlers beers.
[0:03:32 – 0:03:57] Erik: they’re big they are big we’ve had these uh this brewery in the past but we have not had these kinds and these are from josh and siri they dropped these off a couple months back with a very nice letter um and we appreciate that shout out um i’m sorry that your beers are involved in an episode that has so far basically just been trashing a
[0:03:57 – 0:04:25] Adam: think about this though this these beers probably will be the highlight of this episode that’s the thing about that how many times can you say that yep so this is a ager ager ager ager it’s the one that has jason momoa on the cover holding the horn of horn of plenty and i like a beer where they just write in the name with a sharpie yep it really speaks to my i love it big 750 millimeter crawlers these are from elk river you’ve got a i got a smoking hot
[0:04:26 – 0:04:27] Adam: A Chipotle Blonde.
[0:04:27 – 0:04:29] Adam: That’s a Chipotle Blonde 5’2 ABV.
[0:04:29 – 0:04:30] Adam: What do you got?
[0:04:30 – 0:04:31] Erik: All Fathers.
[0:04:32 – 0:04:33] Erik: Oh, 7% porter here.
[0:04:34 – 0:04:34] Erik: Let’s go ahead.
[0:04:35 – 0:04:36] Erik: It’s like night and day.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:37] Erik: Yeah.
[0:04:38 – 0:04:40] Erik: I can do a morning porter.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:42] Adam: All right.
[0:04:42 – 0:04:43] Adam: Ooh, yeah.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:44] Adam: That’s dark looking.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:45] Adam: I love these jumbo cans.
[0:04:45 – 0:04:46] Erik: Yeah, it makes me feel…
[0:04:47 – 0:04:48] Adam: Anybody else know?
[0:04:48 – 0:04:48] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:04:48 – 0:04:54] Adam: Up here, we got usually the tall mingolds, but now all of a sudden they can’t get tall cans.
[0:04:54 – 0:05:00] Adam: That’s another like bar and chain oil and tall cans are now in limited supply due to the pandemic.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:04] Adam: So now I’ve got little tiny 12 ounce mingolds floating around town.
[0:05:04 – 0:05:06] Adam: Yeah, they look ridiculous.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:10] Adam: I keep drinking them way too fast because my mind’s calibrated to a tall boy.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:12] Adam: But this is my kind of beer.
[0:05:12 – 0:05:18] Adam: This egg here is 750 milliliters in one can.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:18] Adam: Yep.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:20] Adam: And it’s not even close to noon yet.
[0:05:21 – 0:05:22] Erik: Nope.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:23] Erik: Not even close.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:24] Adam: How’s that porter treating you?
[0:05:25 – 0:05:27] Erik: I mean, it tastes like a porter.
[0:05:27 – 0:05:28] Adam: This is smoky a little.
[0:05:28 – 0:05:28] Adam: Yeah?
[0:05:28 – 0:05:29] Adam: Let me try that.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:35] Adam: Yeah, because it says chipotle, but yeah, I was expecting it to be more peppery, but it’s like a smoked pepper.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:37] Adam: Interesting.
[0:05:37 – 0:05:37] Adam: Interesting.
[0:05:38 – 0:05:38] Erik: Hmm.
[0:05:39 – 0:05:39] Adam: Wow.
[0:05:39 – 0:05:40] Adam: Yeah, I mean…
[0:05:40 – 0:05:42] Adam: It’s not so hot, but definitely smoky.
[0:05:42 – 0:05:42] Adam: I love it.
[0:05:43 – 0:05:46] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know if I necessarily like it.
[0:05:46 – 0:05:47] Adam: You can have the porter.
[0:05:47 – 0:05:49] Adam: I will do… You know, you’re not a…
[0:05:50 – 0:05:53] Adam: You’re not a peppers and beer kind of guy, I don’t think.
[0:05:53 – 0:05:53] Erik: No, no.
[0:05:54 – 0:05:57] Erik: I think that it’s a trend that’s kind of happening with beer.
[0:05:58 – 0:06:00] Erik: Peppers are so hot right now.
[0:06:00 – 0:06:02] Erik: Chipotle is so hot right now.
[0:06:03 – 0:06:04] Erik: But they’re like, I mean, I don’t know.
[0:06:06 – 0:06:10] Erik: I guess I wouldn’t necessarily say that IPAs are like super refreshing.
[0:06:11 – 0:06:11] Erik: I would.
[0:06:11 – 0:06:16] Erik: But it’s like kind of the point still is that it’s supposed to be like…
[0:06:16 – 0:06:18] Adam: That’s what mingolds are for, if you need something refreshing.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:28] Erik: But the beers, now they’re like, some of these Chipotle, these smoked wheat things, it tastes like a meal.
[0:06:28 – 0:06:30] Adam: You never got to try the beef fizz.
[0:06:30 – 0:06:31] Adam: No.
[0:06:31 – 0:06:35] Adam: So I made beef fizz on, I don’t know, 4th of July, I think, at work.
[0:06:35 – 0:06:40] Adam: It was about 90 degrees out, so it was about 120 in the kitchen, and made beef fizz for the whole group.
[0:06:41 – 0:06:42] Adam: What is beef fizz again?
[0:06:42 – 0:06:43] Adam: It’s beef broth.
[0:06:44 – 0:06:47] Adam: lemon juice, and ginger ale.
[0:06:48 – 0:06:52] Adam: Oh, served over, stirred vigorously and served over on the rocks.
[0:06:53 – 0:06:59] Erik: It sounds like the kind of drink that they had to make during World War II when all of the supplies had to go over to Europe.
[0:06:59 – 0:07:02] Adam: I used, like, Virgil’s, like, really too nice a ginger ale.
[0:07:02 – 0:07:05] Adam: I should have used the cheapest ginger ale possible.
[0:07:05 – 0:07:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:07:06 – 0:07:08] Adam: So it didn’t have enough ginger to it, I thought.
[0:07:08 – 0:07:10] Adam: It was a little too beefy, not enough fizz.
[0:07:10 – 0:07:16] Erik: It sounds like… Did you find that recipe in the back of, like, an old, like, 50s jello recipe book?
[0:07:16 – 0:07:19] Adam: It’s kind of like, yeah, it’s definitely from an old-timey cookbook.
[0:07:19 – 0:07:20] Adam: Serve with…
[0:07:21 – 0:07:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:21 – 0:07:23] Erik: It’s like, ugh.
[0:07:23 – 0:07:24] Erik: And mincemeat.
[0:07:24 – 0:07:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:25 – 0:07:27] Erik: Serve with chipped beef.
[0:07:30 – 0:07:30] Erik: Yuck.
[0:07:31 – 0:07:31] Adam: Yeah.
[0:07:31 – 0:07:46] Adam: A friend of the show, Josh, had tagged onto his Facebook at some point in the last year, and I saw it, and so I kind of took a screen grab of the recipe, thinking it sounded hilarious, and then I finally made it, and I took a picture of it and put it back on that same thread.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:48] Adam: Stirred it back up.
[0:07:48 – 0:07:48] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:49 – 0:07:50] Adam: Hey, there’s more fizz here.
[0:07:51 – 0:07:54] Adam: So, yeah, that’s a, that’s pretty good.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:57] Adam: It goes, it’s an interesting mix with the mimosas.
[0:07:57 – 0:07:57] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:57 – 0:08:01] Erik: It’s just too, like, I don’t, it’s too salty, too savory.
[0:08:01 – 0:08:02] Adam: Can I try the porter?
[0:08:02 – 0:08:02] Erik: Yes.
[0:08:03 – 0:08:04] Erik: It’s a solid porter.
[0:08:05 – 0:08:06] Erik: I mean, it is what it is.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:11] Erik: Nothing, you know, not every beer has to be like crazy.
[0:08:12 – 0:08:16] Erik: You know, everything at this point is like, we got to keep pushing, pushing the ingredients.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:18] Erik: What else can we put in here?
[0:08:18 – 0:08:21] Adam: Yeah, I’m not much of a porter guy, but that’s pretty smooth.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:22] Erik: I can do a porter every once in a while.
[0:08:22 – 0:08:24] Adam: Put anything in a can this size, I’m going to love it.
[0:08:24 – 0:08:30] Adam: So thank you for the show sponsorship, Josh and Siri?
[0:08:31 – 0:08:32] Erik: Yeah, I like that name, Siri.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:33] Erik: Or is it Kyrie?
[0:08:33 – 0:08:38] Erik: Spelled with a C. I would believe it’s pronounced Siri.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:41] Adam: So yeah, we’re in the… Kyrie Eleison?
[0:08:41 – 0:08:42] Adam: Kyrie Eleison.
[0:08:42 – 0:09:11] Erik: yes exactly we had an episode uh i think it was about this time last year we forced an episode uh a lake review episode and when we were both just duncan brain dead poor duncan yeah it’s like yeah it’s a good feeling very brain dead though i mean no no i’m not actually but i just was like with everything else if we would have tried to put together like a plan for it it would have just like i don’t know i it is summer it’s fine to have episodes that don’t have a plan
[0:09:12 – 0:09:15] Erik: Yeah, we have things to talk about that are definitely boundary waters involved.
[0:09:15 – 0:09:18] Erik: The madness of this season is incredible.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:21] Adam: I have things that are not boundary waters involved to talk about as well.
[0:09:21 – 0:09:28] Erik: Yeah, so let’s start with just how crazy the permits are and what’s available and what’s not.
[0:09:28 – 0:09:32] Erik: And maybe a story that’s associated with that.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:33] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:54] Adam: um so i pulled it up this morning and just um so you’re all aware we should uh pull out the ron share a calendar and see where we’re at here what day it is yeah all right so we get to move it on from july oh we got a musky chasing a double-bladed meps it looks like that’s nice who painted that one you see no oh that’s very lifelike
[0:09:54 – 0:09:56] Adam: Giant Killer Muskie.
[0:09:57 – 0:09:57] Erik: That’s a great name.
[0:09:57 – 0:09:59] Adam: I guess they spelled muskie correctly.
[0:09:59 – 0:10:00] Adam: Not with a Y?
[0:10:00 – 0:10:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:01] Adam: I-E.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:02] Adam: Please.
[0:10:03 – 0:10:04] Adam: Same for whiskey.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:05] Adam: Whiskey and muskie both should be I-E.
[0:10:06 – 0:10:09] Erik: There’s a difference, I think, between whiskeys spelled differently, though.
[0:10:09 – 0:10:10] Erik: Oh.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:11] Erik: It has a meaning.
[0:10:11 – 0:10:13] Adam: August of 2020.
[0:10:13 – 0:10:14] Adam: We are currently on the 4th.
[0:10:16 – 0:10:17] Adam: One day after the full moon.
[0:10:19 – 0:10:20] Adam: August 4th, the fact of the day.
[0:10:21 – 0:10:23] Adam: Keep pets watered on hot days.
[0:10:23 – 0:10:24] Adam: Sunset is at 835.
[0:10:27 – 0:10:29] Adam: Ron, you’re getting desperate.
[0:10:29 – 0:10:30] Adam: 8.35, baby.
[0:10:30 – 0:10:33] Adam: We’re losing a minute a day now.
[0:10:33 – 0:10:40] Adam: We officially passed Llamas on August 1st, so we’re now on our way to the autumnal equinox.
[0:10:40 – 0:10:41] Adam: Losing a minute a day.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:43] Adam: Keep those pets watered on a hot day.
[0:10:43 – 0:10:44] Adam: It’s actually not that hot today.
[0:10:44 – 0:10:57] Erik: No, it’s not, but it’s also like, I love the Ron Sherritt calendar because it’s like, right away, I felt like, especially the first few months, it was like, ooh, crappies are feeding in the beds or something like interesting.
[0:10:57 – 0:10:59] Adam: We’re kind of not in the shoulder season now, though.
[0:10:59 – 0:11:01] Adam: Not much is really happening in the middle of summer, to be honest.
[0:11:01 – 0:11:01] Erik: Well, I know.
[0:11:01 – 0:11:06] Erik: You have to fill a whole calendar, but it’s just like a tip, like a general tip.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:07] Adam: It’s a fact.
[0:11:07 – 0:11:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:08 – 0:11:10] Erik: Like, hey, keep the bowl filled.
[0:11:10 – 0:11:13] Erik: Don’t roll the windows all the way up on Poochie.
[0:11:13 – 0:11:14] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:11:15 – 0:11:17] Erik: That’s not an outdoor tip at all.
[0:11:17 – 0:11:19] Adam: It’s just a general good way to live.
[0:11:19 – 0:11:21] Adam: Smile at your neighbors.
[0:11:21 – 0:11:23] Adam: What the hell, Ron?
[0:11:23 – 0:11:26] Adam: Must be the middle of… See, even Ron’s mailing today in the middle of August.
[0:11:26 – 0:11:27] Erik: Yeah, see?
[0:11:27 – 0:11:27] Erik: Perfect.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:30] Erik: That’s a great…
[0:11:30 – 0:11:35] Adam: So there was no fisherman’s picnic this year, although they still only half canceled it.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:37] Erik: Well, they were still doing the fish burgers.
[0:11:37 – 0:11:39] Adam: They did the fish burgers.
[0:11:39 – 0:11:39] Adam: What did I say?
[0:11:39 – 0:11:40] Adam: They’re not great.
[0:11:40 – 0:11:41] Adam: No, they’re not great.
[0:11:42 – 0:11:44] Adam: I don’t want to say they’re terrible, but they’re not good.
[0:11:45 – 0:11:47] Adam: The fish burger stand was there.
[0:11:47 – 0:11:48] Adam: They were still selling the 50-50 raffle.
[0:11:49 – 0:11:50] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:11:50 – 0:11:51] Adam: They had the minnow races, I heard.
[0:11:52 – 0:11:54] Adam: There was a couple other food trucks that showed up.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:57] Adam: None of them were decent.
[0:11:58 – 0:11:59] Adam: My two favorite food trucks didn’t make it.
[0:12:00 – 0:12:01] Erik: Which ones were your favorite?
[0:12:01 – 0:12:01] Erik: The Mexican one?
[0:12:01 – 0:12:07] Adam: I like the one that’s, yeah, the super tortoise sandwich slash taco one.
[0:12:08 – 0:12:10] Adam: And then I can’t remember where they’re from, actually.
[0:12:10 – 0:12:13] Adam: And then the Taste of Saigon with the Chinese food.
[0:12:14 – 0:12:15] Adam: So they weren’t there.
[0:12:15 – 0:12:18] Adam: And then there’s rumors that they were going to do the fireworks anyways.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:23] Adam: And then people got all in a hissy because they were in, you know, it’s like, is it a canceled or not?
[0:12:24 – 0:12:26] Adam: So then they, I don’t know.
[0:12:26 – 0:12:27] Adam: Then they did cancel it.
[0:12:28 – 0:12:32] Adam: So I, I guess there was no fireworks and really no live music, no parade.
[0:12:32 – 0:12:35] Adam: And worst of all, they canceled the bingo.
[0:12:36 – 0:12:36] Erik: Bingo.
[0:12:36 – 0:12:37] Erik: The bingo tent was always a fun.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:40] Adam: That’s the only part I liked that in the Chinese food.
[0:12:41 – 0:12:44] Erik: I always used to like the book sale.
[0:12:45 – 0:12:46] Erik: Oh, yeah, the book sale.
[0:12:46 – 0:12:47] Erik: Do they have that this year?
[0:12:47 – 0:12:47] Adam: Probably not.
[0:12:47 – 0:12:48] Adam: Probably not.
[0:12:48 – 0:12:48] Adam: No.
[0:12:49 – 0:12:51] Adam: Yeah, the library is not even open to the public right now.
[0:12:52 – 0:12:52] Adam: Still.
[0:12:52 – 0:12:53] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:12:53 – 0:12:54] Erik: I mean, what are you going to do?
[0:12:54 – 0:12:56] Erik: Here’s a bunch of books that everybody’s shared.
[0:12:57 – 0:12:57] Adam: Get an e-book.
[0:12:58 – 0:13:00] Adam: Yeah, no, so it’s…
[0:13:00 – 0:13:03] Adam: So no fish pick this year.
[0:13:03 – 0:13:04] Adam: No fish pick.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:07] Adam: But there was still, you know, like anybody’s giving up those reservations.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:10] Adam: No, there’s still so many people around.
[0:13:10 – 0:13:18] Adam: After Memorial Day, I realized that just because you cancel things, you’re still going to have the same amount of people up here because nobody cancels their reservations.
[0:13:18 – 0:13:20] Adam: Who cares if it’s a pandemic?
[0:13:20 – 0:13:21] Adam: We’re still coming.
[0:13:21 – 0:13:23] Adam: Every bed in town was filled last weekend.
[0:13:23 – 0:13:24] Adam: I can guarantee you that.
[0:13:24 – 0:13:25] Adam: And it was a zoo.
[0:13:26 – 0:13:27] Adam: I went and walked around on Friday and
[0:13:28 – 0:13:40] Adam: the site of the former Crooked Spoon, there was a truck there, and I had heard a rumor that Crooked Spoon was going to do a truck, so I excitedly ran up to it, only to find that this truck sold two things, fried dough and sloppy joes.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:43] Adam: What the heck kind of combination is that?
[0:13:43 – 0:13:44] Erik: With the fried dough?
[0:13:45 – 0:13:45] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:13:45 – 0:13:47] Adam: You could probably get both put together.
[0:13:47 – 0:13:49] Adam: I didn’t stick around to ask questions.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:53] Adam: I just disappointingly moped away because it wasn’t the crooked spoon.
[0:13:53 – 0:13:59] Adam: What a disgrace to that site to put a fried dough stand right where that great restaurant once stood.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:03] Adam: So that very much summed up Fisherman’s Picnic for me this year.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:13] Erik: Yeah, well, I mean, I usually don’t get myself too involved in fish pick, but it is still absolutely insane.
[0:14:14 – 0:14:17] Erik: The Boundary Waters, Grand Marais, the shore…
[0:14:17 – 0:14:20] Adam: Yeah, it’s just typical summer busyness.
[0:14:20 – 0:14:22] Adam: So I ran a… Like nothing’s going on.
[0:14:23 – 0:14:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:24 – 0:14:29] Erik: So yeah, like nothing, like there’s not a pandemic on, no.
[0:14:30 – 0:14:30] Adam: You couldn’t tell.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:33] Adam: You really couldn’t tell other than there’s a few clues.
[0:14:34 – 0:14:37] Adam: But I mean, when you just look at the amount of people around, couldn’t tell.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:49] Erik: Well, you’d have to do some serious explaining if you looked at what I saw this morning on the, you know, as a cooperator, I can run a report and see what permits are available.
[0:14:49 – 0:14:51] Erik: Across the whole boundary waters, I can do different districts.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:52] Erik: Sure.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:55] Erik: And I ran a report this morning, Tuesday, August 4th.
[0:14:56 – 0:15:03] Erik: For the next 11 days, guess how many permits are available in the Gunflint District?
[0:15:03 – 0:15:04] Erik: Does North Fowl count?
[0:15:05 – 0:15:05] Adam: Yep.
[0:15:05 – 0:15:06] Adam: Two.
[0:15:07 – 0:15:11] Erik: There’s one permit available, and it’s today for John Lake.
[0:15:11 – 0:15:12] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:13] Adam: That’s a pretty good one.
[0:15:13 – 0:15:13] Adam: Yeah.
[0:15:13 – 0:15:14] Adam: Somebody canceled?
[0:15:14 – 0:15:15] Erik: It must have been a late cancellation.
[0:15:15 – 0:15:16] Adam: Come on.
[0:15:16 – 0:15:16] Adam: Yeah.
[0:15:16 – 0:15:27] Adam: I was going to say, I looked just for as a normal citizen, I ran a report and I just went and looked at like the next couple Sundays because generally Sunday is my Friday.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:30] Adam: Go in Sunday night, Monday night, you can sneak a little trip in there.
[0:15:30 – 0:15:34] Adam: I just wanted, you know, curious what’s available and pretty much nothing.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:39] Erik: If I wasn’t clear, that’s starting today through August 15th.
[0:15:39 – 0:15:40] Erik: No permits.
[0:15:40 – 0:15:41] Erik: Zeroes from top to bottom.
[0:15:41 – 0:15:42] Adam: Does that count arrive from Canada?
[0:15:43 – 0:15:45] Erik: I don’t even know what the from Canada permit is.
[0:15:45 – 0:15:50] Adam: If you arrive on SAG from Canada, then I assume that’s gunflint side.
[0:15:50 – 0:15:50] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:15:50 – 0:15:56] Erik: Anybody that works for the Forest Service, if you’re listening, send us a message.
[0:15:56 – 0:15:57] Erik: What’s the From Canada permit?
[0:15:57 – 0:15:59] Adam: I don’t believe you can even cross the border right now.
[0:15:59 – 0:16:00] Adam: Well, there’s that.
[0:16:00 – 0:16:02] Adam: Maybe that’s why that one’s always available.
[0:16:02 – 0:16:03] Erik: There’s always three of them every day.
[0:16:03 – 0:16:05] Adam: If you try and sign up for it, you get immediately to jail.
[0:16:06 – 0:16:08] Adam: Turns out, go right to jail.
[0:16:08 – 0:16:13] Erik: To tell you just how crazy it is, I saw one of them was actually taken.
[0:16:13 – 0:16:15] Adam: Somebody tried to buy one.
[0:16:15 – 0:16:20] Erik: Every day there’s three, but I saw next week there’s one day where there’s two only available.
[0:16:20 – 0:16:23] Erik: Who is this getting the From Canada permit?
[0:16:23 – 0:16:25] Adam: It was Steph from Surviving Crooked Lake.
[0:16:25 – 0:16:25] Erik: Oh, God.
[0:16:26 – 0:16:27] Adam: Jonah!
[0:16:27 – 0:16:27] SPEAKER_02: Jonah!
[0:16:29 – 0:16:31] Erik: So it’s absolutely insane.
[0:16:31 – 0:16:36] Erik: Even any other year, one permit today for the next 11 days.
[0:16:37 – 0:16:39] Adam: John Lake’s a desirable permit.
[0:16:39 – 0:16:47] Erik: And people are still calling and trying to put together trips, and it’s just like, I can’t do anything for you.
[0:16:47 – 0:16:49] Adam: I’d love to go to John Lake.
[0:16:49 – 0:16:52] Adam: I hear there’s some really good live white pine I can hack down over there.
[0:16:53 – 0:16:54] Erik: Well, that’s a whole other…
[0:16:54 – 0:16:55] Erik: Story, yeah.
[0:16:55 – 0:16:56] Adam: It’s a good area to go hacking.
[0:16:57 – 0:17:03] Erik: So, yeah, usually people just kind of think, well, all the Clearwater permits are gone, and then I can’t really do anything through Clearwater.
[0:17:03 – 0:17:09] Erik: But there’s a number of, I mean, we can service a ton of entry points, but there are literally no permits.
[0:17:09 – 0:17:11] Adam: I’ve never seen a full week of zeros.
[0:17:12 – 0:17:13] Adam: Almost always.
[0:17:13 – 0:17:14] Adam: This is probably.
[0:17:14 – 0:17:15] Erik: Even this time of year.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:18] Adam: This is the busiest, busiest time of year.
[0:17:18 – 0:17:18] Adam: Yeah, it is.
[0:17:18 – 0:17:19] Adam: We’re in the meat of it.
[0:17:19 – 0:17:22] Erik: Still almost always find a Southlake permit.
[0:17:23 – 0:17:24] Erik: Almost always.
[0:17:24 – 0:17:24] Erik: Sometimes a Morgan.
[0:17:24 – 0:17:25] Erik: A magnetic lake permit.
[0:17:26 – 0:17:26] Erik: Morgan.
[0:17:26 – 0:17:27] Adam: Maybe a Brandt.
[0:17:27 – 0:17:28] Adam: Somebody I work with.
[0:17:28 – 0:17:30] Erik: All of the Brandt permits are gone.
[0:17:31 – 0:17:32] Adam: All of them.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:32] Adam: Yeah.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:32] Adam: No.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:35] Adam: Somebody I work with is like, hey, I’m going on a trip.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:37] Adam: I got a Brandt permit.
[0:17:37 – 0:17:37] Adam: I just go, whoo.
[0:17:39 – 0:17:41] Adam: They’re like, how are the sights on Brandt?
[0:17:41 – 0:17:47] Adam: I’m like, suboptimal, but I would just take one if you see one open, I guess.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:48] Erik: Suboptimal.
[0:17:48 – 0:17:50] Adam: Because they were just doing like a one-nighter off of Brandt.
[0:17:50 – 0:17:55] Adam: I was like, yeah, I guess just take one on Brandt if you can get one and then do a day trip down to Gillis.
[0:17:57 – 0:17:57] Adam: That’d be fun.
[0:17:58 – 0:17:59] Adam: They didn’t want to like go too hard.
[0:17:59 – 0:17:59] Erik: Yeah.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:02] Erik: And then I did the whole full boundary waters.
[0:18:03 – 0:18:15] Erik: And for the next 11 days, it’s like, yeah, from Canada, Lac La Croix only, like Trout Lake, which is one, 3.1, which is basically like a motor lake north of Vermilion.
[0:18:15 – 0:18:15] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:15 – 0:18:16] Erik: And Bog Lake.
[0:18:16 – 0:18:17] Erik: Bog.
[0:18:17 – 0:18:18] Erik: Oh, good old Bog.
[0:18:18 – 0:18:20] Erik: Which even that was kind of going away.
[0:18:20 – 0:18:21] Erik: What happens on Bog Lake?
[0:18:21 – 0:18:29] Erik: It’s a 200-run portage into a single lake the size of Round Lake on the Gunflint with three campsites.
[0:18:30 – 0:18:32] Adam: I’d rather go to Timber Freer than to do Bog.
[0:18:33 – 0:18:36] Erik: Would you just sit there and camp and look at your neighbors the whole time?
[0:18:36 – 0:18:36] Adam: Whittle.
[0:18:37 – 0:18:38] Erik: We’re in the Boundary Waters.
[0:18:38 – 0:18:40] Adam: You want to play a game of Pass the Pigs?
[0:18:40 – 0:18:43] Erik: Yeah, and then somebody decides to go out there, I’m going to base camp for a week.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:46] Erik: Okay, now there’s one site gone.
[0:18:46 – 0:18:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:47 – 0:18:53] Erik: I’m so happy that I got my guided trip over with at the end of July the way that I did because it was stressing me out.
[0:18:53 – 0:18:59] Erik: And not because of just permits not being available, but also just because I…
[0:19:00 – 0:19:03] Erik: There’s a certain level of stress that goes into…
[0:19:05 – 0:19:13] Erik: knowing that you have a trip planned and on the books and then you can see what the permits look like and just the availability of campsites.
[0:19:14 – 0:19:23] Adam: Even if you told me there was a Clearwater permit available today and I had the next five days off, I wouldn’t want to take it, honestly, right now because you know what’s out there waiting for you.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:24] Erik: I know, and it’s kind of like…
[0:19:24 – 0:19:25] Adam: It’s a horde of people.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:32] Erik: Obviously, yeah, we’re a Boundary Waters podcast, and I don’t want to sit here and, like, slag on, like, the existence of people in the park.
[0:19:33 – 0:19:38] Erik: But, man, oh, man, it is – it’s beyond busy out there.
[0:19:39 – 0:19:42] Erik: But I should say my guided trip went very well.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:47] Erik: And I don’t know, as soon as I say this, I’m sure things will flip and it’ll be the opposite.
[0:19:47 – 0:19:52] Erik: But I would say based on what I saw and what I have typically seen –
[0:19:55 – 0:20:02] Erik: Clearwater Lake, if you get a Clearwater permit and it’s this time of year, just camp on Clearwater.
[0:20:02 – 0:20:04] Erik: There’s always sites open on Clearwater.
[0:20:04 – 0:20:05] Adam: Everybody feels the need.
[0:20:05 – 0:20:06] Adam: I got to push one in.
[0:20:06 – 0:20:07] Adam: I got to get one portage in.
[0:20:07 – 0:20:10] Adam: That came out wrong.
[0:20:10 – 0:20:11] Erik: One lake.
[0:20:11 – 0:20:11] Erik: Yeah.
[0:20:12 – 0:20:15] Erik: So I got the Mountain Lake campsite.
[0:20:16 – 0:20:17] Erik: We just paddled to the Mountain Lake campsite.
[0:20:17 – 0:20:18] Erik: It was open.
[0:20:18 – 0:20:23] Erik: The whole time we were there, which was only three days, but there was nobody else down there.
[0:20:23 – 0:20:25] Erik: That’s an ideal spot to be base camped.
[0:20:25 – 0:20:27] Erik: One boat went by the whole time.
[0:20:28 – 0:20:29] Erik: Because that’s the thing.
[0:20:29 – 0:20:31] Erik: Everybody thinks Clearwater Lake, motorboats.
[0:20:32 – 0:20:33] Erik: I want to go to the Boundary Waters.
[0:20:33 – 0:20:34] Erik: I don’t want to be seeing motorboats.
[0:20:35 – 0:20:37] Erik: It’s so quiet.
[0:20:37 – 0:20:44] Erik: And the only times that it would really bother me would be right away in the morning and then in the evening slash night.
[0:20:44 – 0:20:46] Erik: There’s no boats riding around at night.
[0:20:46 – 0:20:48] Adam: Those four strokes are so whisper quiet.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:50] Adam: They just lullaby me right to sleep.
[0:20:50 – 0:20:54] Erik: Yeah, and we did a day trip over to Johnson Falls.
[0:20:54 – 0:20:54] Erik: Perfect.
[0:20:54 – 0:20:55] Adam: How many people were there?
[0:20:56 – 0:20:58] Erik: Johnson Falls, we were in between two groups.
[0:20:58 – 0:21:00] Erik: We had the whole place to ourselves for like an hour.
[0:21:00 – 0:21:01] Erik: Oh, really?
[0:21:01 – 0:21:02] Erik: We were going in.
[0:21:02 – 0:21:04] Erik: A big group was coming out.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:05] Erik: Did you see anybody masked up?
[0:21:06 – 0:21:07] Erik: No, nobody was masked up.
[0:21:08 – 0:21:11] Erik: I did find one of the weirdest things I’ve ever found in the Boundary Waters.
[0:21:12 – 0:21:18] Erik: But before I get to that, the two sites in the back bay on Caribou were occupied.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:25] Erik: And so I was going across two threes and a solo, which is one of the other things I’m going to talk about.
[0:21:26 – 0:21:28] Erik: I’m taking a solo trip this fall.
[0:21:29 – 0:21:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:29 – 0:21:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:32] Erik: But so we were heading across.
[0:21:32 – 0:21:34] Erik: Can I come?
[0:21:34 – 0:21:34] Erik: Sure.
[0:21:34 – 0:21:35] Erik: Let’s take two magics.
[0:21:35 – 0:21:36] Erik: Those things.
[0:21:36 – 0:21:36] Erik: All right.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:38] Erik: I don’t want to get too far along down that story.
[0:21:38 – 0:21:43] Erik: But anyway, we’re going across the far east portage from Clearwater into Caribou.
[0:21:43 – 0:21:48] Erik: And I ran across a gal, a woman portaging towards Clearwater.
[0:21:49 – 0:21:51] Erik: And she had a pack and a solo canoe.
[0:21:51 – 0:21:52] Erik: I was like, oh, we’re coming over.
[0:21:52 – 0:21:56] Erik: And we got to the Caribou side.
[0:21:57 – 0:22:00] Erik: And there was a little tent set up on the portage landing.
[0:22:01 – 0:22:01] Adam: Oh.
[0:22:02 – 0:22:02] Erik: Yeah.
[0:22:02 – 0:22:06] Erik: And then the two sites on that side of Caribou were also taken.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:07] Erik: Yes.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:21] Erik: So I couldn’t tell if it was because it was that busy on Caribou or because of horrible McKenzie maps that show that campsite starting…
[0:22:23 – 0:22:41] Erik: like not starting but existing where that portage starts uh-huh so that portage and a campsite are mislabeled on those mckenzie’s so it looks like it’s at the same spot yeah but there’s not clearly not a campsite there well i know but i’m just saying like what time of day was this it was like noon
[0:22:41 – 0:23:04] Adam: okay so that wasn’t it wasn’t like an emergency thing wasn’t yeah she was like going out day tripping or something uh-huh so like i was like oh well it looked like she had a pack and a canoe so i thought she was traveling and then we got down there and there was just a tent yeah and then when we came back from johnson falls she was coming back to her campsite quote-unquote it’s a sweet campsite
[0:23:05 – 0:23:14] Erik: Well, I think it’s like one of those things that’s like the problem with campsites being mislabeled like that and why that company needs to get…
[0:23:14 – 0:23:16] Adam: I’m going to blame the paddler, I think.
[0:23:16 – 0:23:27] Erik: I mean, yeah, the paddler is, I would say, definitely a decision that you should know if there isn’t a fire grate or a latrine, you’re not at a campsite.
[0:23:28 – 0:23:30] Erik: But there is a dot there on some maps.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:35] Erik: So there is a part of me that can’t necessarily fully blame that person.
[0:23:35 – 0:23:36] Adam: Just do a little PMA style camp.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:39] Erik: But it does give you an idea.
[0:23:39 – 0:23:41] Erik: Like people are camping on portages right now.
[0:23:41 – 0:23:43] Erik: It’s kind of stupid.
[0:23:44 – 0:23:51] Erik: Um, so yeah, we, we, uh, it was this family of six that I had take, I had taken out two, three person North stars.
[0:23:51 – 0:24:04] Erik: And, uh, the first trip I sent out this spring from Clearwater in, uh, one of the Winona, uh, encounters that we have, uh, seat just ripped right out of the bottom.
[0:24:05 – 0:24:05] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:05 – 0:24:05] Erik: All right.
[0:24:05 – 0:24:07] Erik: Well, I guess we’re down to solo.
[0:24:07 – 0:24:10] Erik: So I sent a message to bear at North star, uh,
[0:24:11 – 0:24:13] Erik: and said, hey, can I get a couple of your magics?
[0:24:13 – 0:24:19] Erik: I’ve always wanted to paddle them, and I just know I’m going to end up needing these solos since I’m down one.
[0:24:19 – 0:24:22] Erik: I only have two, and the other one’s getting pretty ratty.
[0:24:22 – 0:24:23] Erik: And those finally came.
[0:24:24 – 0:24:24] Erik: Not finally.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:27] Erik: We ordered them in May, and they came at the end of July.
[0:24:27 – 0:24:28] Erik: Pretty decent turnaround.
[0:24:29 – 0:24:32] Erik: And so it was two, three persons, and I was in the solo.
[0:24:32 – 0:24:34] Erik: North Star Magic, previously Bell.
[0:24:35 – 0:24:35] Erik: Yes.
[0:24:35 – 0:24:39] Erik: And is one of the sexiest canoes I’ve ever paddled.
[0:24:39 – 0:24:41] Erik: It was so incredible.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:48] Erik: I remember on that Quetico trip, we were always so surprised at how well Paige could keep up.
[0:24:48 – 0:24:48] Adam: In the wildfire.
[0:24:49 – 0:24:49] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:49 – 0:24:54] Erik: And I was like, if I wanted to, like, kind of just drop the hammer and paddle, I was blowing.
[0:24:54 – 0:25:00] Erik: Yes, they were people that hadn’t really ever paddled three persons before, but there’s still three paddles in the water.
[0:25:00 – 0:25:01] Adam: Yeah, you should be able to haul in a three.
[0:25:01 – 0:25:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:25:02 – 0:25:05] Erik: And I could just do like a three on one side, three on the other.
[0:25:05 – 0:25:10] Erik: And I was like the water displacement on those magics.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:15] Erik: Like, yeah, you can’t screw around too much with the moving around.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:20] Erik: But if you get into a nice groove, you track so well in those things.
[0:25:20 – 0:25:23] Erik: And there’s like so little canoe in the water.
[0:25:23 – 0:25:24] Erik: They are so fast.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:49] Erik: and literally weigh like 25 pounds yeah uh between caribou and little caribou i just like carried it under an arm yeah i didn’t even bother putting on because it comes with the yoke that you screw on for sure i just walked it under my arm i mean i like the whole time i’m like i need to take a solo trip and just spend some time in this thing it was amazing and i’ve paddled those winonas but they don’t
[0:25:50 – 0:25:58] Adam: Yeah, back when I had my old Solo Mad River, that thing weighed more than a Min 2, but it was still faster than a Min 2.
[0:25:58 – 0:26:04] Adam: I could easily out-paddle two strong paddlers in a Min 2 with that thing because it was needle thin.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:05] Erik: Yeah.
[0:26:05 – 0:26:07] Adam: Unfortunately, it was a little tippy.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:09] Adam: Well, and that’s… You got to be a little careful on them.
[0:26:09 – 0:26:15] Adam: But yeah, it’s like two or three or four on each side, just… Yeah.
[0:26:15 – 0:26:17] Adam: Like a hummingbird stroke.
[0:26:17 – 0:26:17] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:18 – 0:26:20] Adam: You just become a hummingbird when you’re in a solo canoe.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:20] Erik: Yeah, basically.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:23] Erik: And so one of the kids in the group that I was…
[0:26:24 – 0:26:46] Erik: um out there with decided to take it out one night he’s like oh i want to just go out and paddle mess around and he was out there and i he like i was the only one that saw it but he was like getting like kind of into it like that too but he wasn’t expecting that it was gonna roll so hard on him one time yeah and he like dipped the like dipped the gunnel in the lake and like kind of like sipped up some water and i was like oh
[0:26:47 – 0:26:48] Erik: I thought he was going to capsize the canoe.
[0:26:49 – 0:26:52] Erik: It was a calm, obviously like really nice afternoon on Clearwater.
[0:26:52 – 0:27:05] Erik: It wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world, but yeah, they, they, they’re, they’re slippery little buggers, but if you’re, you know, uh, a halfway decent paddler, Oh, I cannot recommend the, the magic enough.
[0:27:05 – 0:27:07] Erik: It is a fine, fine solo.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:08] Erik: And I, you got two of them now.
[0:27:08 – 0:27:09] Erik: We have two of them.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:16] Adam: Maybe we should do, uh, someday we, the both of us should take one each and do the, uh, the boost from classic route.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:16] Adam: Oh,
[0:27:16 – 0:27:17] Adam: Wow.
[0:27:17 – 0:27:17] Adam: Double solo.
[0:27:17 – 0:27:20] Erik: You want to become one of those kinds of groups?
[0:27:20 – 0:27:29] Erik: You see those guys in the fall where it’s like three old grizzled vets and they all have their own canoes and they’re just like tricked out with fishing rigs.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:31 – 0:27:32] Erik: I just want to…
[0:27:32 – 0:27:37] Erik: They just, like, rent all of the solos I have, even though it’s the same trip.
[0:27:37 – 0:27:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:38 – 0:27:39] Erik: And I kind of get it now.
[0:27:40 – 0:27:41] Erik: It’s kind of nice to be in your own canoe.
[0:27:41 – 0:27:45] Adam: I wouldn’t do it for a camping trip, but, like, on a long day trip like that, why not?
[0:27:45 – 0:27:45] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:46] Erik: It’d be fun.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:47] Erik: I definitely…
[0:27:47 – 0:27:52] Erik: I think it was about this time last year we had started talking about, you know, doing an episode on solo camping.
[0:27:52 – 0:27:52] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:27:53 – 0:27:57] Erik: And I was like, well, I haven’t really officially ever done a solo trip overnight.
[0:27:58 – 0:27:59] Erik: I’ve paddled a lot in a solo.
[0:27:59 – 0:28:03] Erik: And that has definitely incentivized me to do that now this fall.
[0:28:03 – 0:28:05] Erik: Taking a trip, who knows how long.
[0:28:05 – 0:28:13] Erik: But that will, I think, be a fun episode that I can maybe lend a little bit more of a discussion on.
[0:28:13 – 0:28:15] Erik: Because I know you’ve solo camped.
[0:28:16 – 0:28:19] Erik: But it’s not the same if you’re out there with a bunch of people in solos.
[0:28:19 – 0:28:20] Adam: No, I know.
[0:28:20 – 0:28:22] Adam: Yeah, it’s a little spooky.
[0:28:22 – 0:28:23] Adam: Yeah.
[0:28:23 – 0:28:25] Adam: Yeah, I’m looking forward to it.
[0:28:25 – 0:28:25] Adam: We’ll see.
[0:28:25 – 0:28:28] Adam: Last time I solo camped, I ended up talking to a spruce tree.
[0:28:29 – 0:28:31] Erik: Oh, wasn’t that down on the land?
[0:28:31 – 0:28:33] Adam: Yeah, I just camped by myself on the land.
[0:28:33 – 0:28:33] Adam: Bruce the spruce?
[0:28:33 – 0:28:34] Erik: Bruce the spruce!
[0:28:34 – 0:28:36] Erik: Shout out to Bruce the spruce!
[0:28:37 – 0:28:40] Adam: He’s like above waist high now.
[0:28:41 – 0:28:42] Adam: That was a couple years ago.
[0:28:42 – 0:28:43] Erik: Every day he’s growing.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:45] Adam: He was just a little guy at the time.
[0:28:45 – 0:28:47] Adam: I was chatting him up and giggling a lot.
[0:28:49 – 0:28:51] Erik: He’s a little spruce.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:54] Erik: He had the night giggles.
[0:28:54 – 0:29:00] Erik: So on the way to Johnson Falls, I found a 13 millimeter wrench just sitting on a rock.
[0:29:00 – 0:29:02] Erik: Like a ratchet or like a monkey wrench?
[0:29:03 – 0:29:04] Erik: Just an old wrench.
[0:29:04 – 0:29:05] Erik: Not adjustable.
[0:29:05 – 0:29:08] Erik: Except for putting a portage yoke on it or what?
[0:29:08 – 0:29:09] Erik: I have no idea.
[0:29:09 – 0:29:10] Erik: It was just sitting there.
[0:29:10 – 0:29:10] Erik: I grabbed it.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:13] Erik: It’s currently in the Stolquist pocket.
[0:29:14 – 0:29:14] Adam: Oh.
[0:29:14 – 0:29:14] Adam: Yeah.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:15] Adam: Fits in a Stolquist.
[0:29:16 – 0:29:16] Adam: Yep.
[0:29:16 – 0:29:17] Adam: In the wrench den.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:17] Adam: Yep.
[0:29:18 – 0:29:43] Erik: it’s in there yeah wrench den that’s the hashtag wrench den taking up precious dill space all the tumble homies know what to do with that hashtag i have no idea why there would be a wrench out there but it was just nicely propped on the trail to johnson falls so i’m surprised you didn’t somehow need it then later on the trip usually when you find something like that yeah it comes in useful yeah oh boy i sure need to equip this wrench
[0:29:45 – 0:30:05] Adam: 13 millimeter perfect what is that most equivalent to three quarters you’re not changing oil with a 13 millimeter yeah i don’t know what a 13 it’s probably it’s like a bolt from a snowblower you gotta adjust the auger so yeah bondage waters is mobbed um
[0:30:06 – 0:30:09] Adam: Yeah, but you had a beautiful site and got to do a day trip to Johnson Falls.
[0:30:09 – 0:30:10] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:30:10 – 0:30:14] Adam: Did you go up and paddle around on a mountain at all or do the overlook?
[0:30:14 – 0:30:23] Erik: So we got out on day one, paddled over to the Mountain Lake Portage, then to the Border Route Trail, and did the nice overlook.
[0:30:23 – 0:30:25] Erik: And there were some nice blueberries up there.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:35] Erik: They were kind of few and far between on the back end, clearly, and there was enough of them to have a little bit of a snack, but we weren’t picking for breakfast or anything.
[0:30:36 – 0:30:44] Erik: And then, yeah, third day, we basically, they had to be back for things.
[0:30:44 – 0:30:53] Erik: So really all we did on the way out was stop at the cliff jumping spot across from the, well, in between the two palisades on the North Shore.
[0:30:54 – 0:30:54] Erik: Stop there.
[0:30:55 – 0:30:57] Erik: And then, yeah, that was that.
[0:30:57 – 0:30:58] Adam: Did you go for the top deck?
[0:30:59 – 0:31:12] Erik: I didn’t go all the way top deck because I hate it when I get water in my ear, and that’s all that that top deck makes me do is it shoots water in my ear, and then I sit there like Kramer.
[0:31:12 – 0:31:13] Adam: That’s why I don’t go off that one.
[0:31:14 – 0:31:14] Erik: That’s why?
[0:31:14 – 0:31:15] Erik: Yeah.
[0:31:15 – 0:31:16] Adam: Sure.
[0:31:16 – 0:31:19] Adam: I only go off the low one, which is also 30 feet high.
[0:31:20 – 0:31:35] Erik: yeah um so yeah the only other thing like 10 meters though the tall tall one is yeah i would say probably 10 meters i bet the tall one’s 20 i’m saying 20 meters i’m saying the mid boy is a 10 meter tall boy is like a
[0:31:36 – 0:31:37] Erik: Oh, the tall one.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:40] Erik: There’s the tall, tall one where you have to jump out over.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:42] Erik: Yeah, no, that one’s nuts.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:44] Erik: I’ve done that one once.
[0:31:44 – 0:31:45] Erik: That’s what I was talking about.
[0:31:45 – 0:31:46] Erik: No, yeah, I’ve done that one once.
[0:31:47 – 0:31:49] Erik: There’s a couple different ones.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:50] Adam: I don’t go to the mid-boy.
[0:31:50 – 0:31:51] Adam: I just go low-boy.
[0:31:51 – 0:31:55] Erik: Yeah, you just go with the one that’s not even as tall as you are.
[0:31:57 – 0:32:03] Adam: It’s like, if you’re going to do a cannonball, it’s like, can splash.
[0:32:03 – 0:32:03] Adam: Got it.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:07] Adam: Did you see I did a triple SoCo backflip off that thing?
[0:32:10 – 0:32:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:11 – 0:32:11] Erik: I don’t even know.
[0:32:11 – 0:32:13] Erik: What do you want to call this episode?
[0:32:14 – 0:32:15] Erik: Chipotle blonde?
[0:32:15 – 0:32:18] Adam: No, we’ll have to find the Latin for blueberries.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:19] Adam: Okay.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:21] Erik: Sure, yeah.
[0:32:21 – 0:32:22] Adam: Or Latin for solo canoe.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:24] Erik: That was the…
[0:32:25 – 0:32:45] Erik: episode that we recorded in front of the bonassa umbellas yeah out in front of the library i think it was around fish pick because then we went over and played bingo yeah wow all right we always just do a real fun we’re real loose yeah no agenda i would say free for all because it’s not like our other episodes aren’t fun
[0:32:46 – 0:32:47] Adam: We’re always having fun.
[0:32:47 – 0:32:48] Erik: Always having fun.
[0:32:49 – 0:32:50] Erik: We should definitely talk.
[0:32:50 – 0:32:52] Erik: I’m sure everybody…
[0:32:52 – 0:32:56] Erik: I think everybody that listens to this podcast is pretty well aware of that story.
[0:32:56 – 0:33:00] Erik: But if you’re not… And I think it kind of speaks to the…
[0:33:00 – 0:33:02] Erik: I think this probably could have happened any year.
[0:33:02 – 0:33:07] Erik: But it seems like if it was going to happen, this was the year where you get a crazy story.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:09] Erik: And if you’re not familiar…
[0:33:10 – 0:33:11] Erik: We’ll put it in the show notes.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:12] Erik: We’ll put it in the show notes.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:16] Erik: Yeah, if you’re on bwca.com, it’s been talked about there.
[0:33:16 – 0:33:25] Adam: I’ve seen it on Facebook like 12 different times already, so I don’t know how you have avoided this story if you’ve made it to this episode without hearing about the bozos of Fortown.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:33] Erik: A rescue operation that was like not necessary and not a rescue operation that…
[0:33:33 – 0:33:36] Adam: This is what’s going to happen if you have cell phone coverage in the park.
[0:33:36 – 0:33:36] Adam: Guarantee it.
[0:33:36 – 0:33:38] Adam: It’s going to happen all the time.
[0:33:38 – 0:34:02] Erik: well and the problem was it wasn’t like an emergency so then it was like it was an inconvenience it was on the outfitter then like and that’s going to have to be yeah if it increases something that outfitters start building into their services as in terms of like recovery they can recover gear so basically it was become a gear recovery expert yeah i’ll go out there and find your canoes for you
[0:34:02 – 0:34:10] Erik: So this family was out on four-town, took a day trip down the Bear Trap River, which is not… Not recommended.
[0:34:10 – 0:34:11] Adam: Not really ever recommended.
[0:34:11 – 0:34:13] Adam: Is that better or worse than the Lower Oyster River?
[0:34:14 – 0:34:16] Erik: I don’t know, but I mean, I think it’s one of those…
[0:34:17 – 0:34:22] Erik: It’s kind of like you look at a map and you see a blue line and you’re like, well, can we paddle that?
[0:34:24 – 0:34:25] Erik: Not really.
[0:34:25 – 0:34:26] Erik: It’s there, but who knows?
[0:34:27 – 0:34:28] Erik: It’s not really traveled.
[0:34:28 – 0:34:32] Erik: In the spring, you can definitely take the bear trap and be just fine, but…
[0:34:33 – 0:34:38] Erik: In August, I think it gets pretty low and weeded out, muddy, beaver dammy.
[0:34:39 – 0:34:46] Erik: And so they went down this river and got to a point where they couldn’t go forward anymore.
[0:34:46 – 0:34:53] Erik: And the details were kind of hard to understand at points where like, how did they get back to the…
[0:34:53 – 0:35:02] Erik: But essentially what they did was abandon their canoes in this river and then hitchhiked back to their site and then got dropped off
[0:35:02 – 0:35:08] Adam: Can you imagine being a paddler out there during a pandemic and some bozos trying to hitchhike in your canoe with you?
[0:35:08 – 0:35:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:12] Adam: Granted, you are in open air, but not ideal.
[0:35:12 – 0:35:14] Erik: Drop them off at their campsite and then they’re just there.
[0:35:14 – 0:35:16] Adam: I can’t believe somebody picked them up.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:16] Adam: Right.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:19] Adam: I mean, I can because people are kind at heart generally.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:21] Adam: But I wouldn’t, I don’t know.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:24] Adam: I would have thought twice before picking up some bozos out of the woods.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:27] Adam: They’re all covered in mud, river mud.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:28] Erik: What’s your story?
[0:35:28 – 0:35:29] Erik: Where are your canoes?
[0:35:29 – 0:35:31] Adam: Especially if that’s what they told me.
[0:35:31 – 0:35:32] Adam: Well, he left them.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:34] Adam: No, then go back and get them.
[0:35:34 – 0:35:34] Adam: That’s what I would have said.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:35] Erik: Yeah, you left them.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:40] Adam: As I paddle away in my bell magic at 48 knots.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:41] Adam: Sorry.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:41] Adam: Hummingbird.
[0:35:41 – 0:35:42] Adam: North wind.
[0:35:43 – 0:35:43] Erik: Yeah.
[0:35:43 – 0:35:50] Erik: So then they, like, the next day realized, oh, like, we need help or something.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:51] Erik: And so.
[0:35:52 – 0:35:54] Erik: I can’t believe they waited until the next day to call.
[0:35:54 – 0:36:19] Erik: yeah and then they they so they called the this is fine and they came out there and they ditched their also their pfds so that was a whole part of the the rescue operation that the they couldn’t have more people in their canoes to go back and get them because there wasn’t enough pfds for everybody and then like this is like an entire group of karens or what’s going on out here well i think probably i want to speak to your manager
[0:36:20 – 0:36:21] Erik: Well, I’ll tell you this.
[0:36:24 – 0:36:24] Adam: My mom…
[0:36:24 – 0:36:28] Adam: I’m picturing one of them having a small dog in a large bag.
[0:36:29 – 0:36:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:29 – 0:36:37] Erik: Well, I mean, I can always tell, and I love my mom, obviously, but you can always tell when memes have peaked, when she starts asking me about them.
[0:36:37 – 0:36:38] Erik: The other day, she goes…
[0:36:38 – 0:36:40] Erik: How did they ever decide on Karen?
[0:36:40 – 0:36:41] Erik: Where did that come from?
[0:36:41 – 0:36:43] Erik: Why did Karen be the one?
[0:36:44 – 0:36:51] Erik: And I was like, well, it’s kind of the person that’s always asking to speak to the manager or complaining.
[0:36:51 – 0:36:52] Erik: She goes, oh, I get that.
[0:36:52 – 0:36:54] Erik: But why did they ever choose Karen?
[0:36:54 – 0:36:54] Erik: Who knows?
[0:36:54 – 0:36:55] Adam: That’s the magic of the internet.
[0:36:55 – 0:36:57] Erik: And I was like, have you ever met a Karen?
[0:36:57 – 0:36:58] Adam: And she goes, oh, yeah.
[0:36:58 – 0:37:01] Adam: Now we’re going to lose all our Karen subscribers.
[0:37:02 – 0:37:02] Erik: Yeah.
[0:37:03 – 0:37:04] SPEAKER_02: I don’t agree with this.
[0:37:05 – 0:37:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:37:07 – 0:37:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:37:08 – 0:37:09] Adam: I would love to see a mug shot of this group.
[0:37:11 – 0:37:12] Adam: I can picture them.
[0:37:12 – 0:37:22] Erik: Yeah, and then so it almost ended up sounding like, because they rented through Paragus, they ended up having to go out and rescue the majority of their canoes and gear on their own time.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:33] Adam: I heard of this happening on the gun fund side once where there was a medical emergency and one canoe got left behind and somebody had to go paddle out with a solo and get their canoe back.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:34] Adam: That’s a whole different story.
[0:37:34 – 0:37:38] Adam: This was just a voluntary abandonment of gear.
[0:37:38 – 0:37:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:37:40 – 0:37:41] Erik: It’s crazy.
[0:37:41 – 0:37:42] Erik: Wow.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:49] Erik: It’s happened at Clearwater one time where some people, it was so windy out on Duncan, they were doing the Rose Falls day trip.
[0:37:49 – 0:37:59] Erik: They got blown into shore, capsized, and ditched the canoe, walked the shoreline, hooked into the portage, and then walked the Caribou Rock Trail back to Hungry Jack and then called us.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:07] Erik: And then me and Deke had to paddle out the next day and rescue the aluminum canoe that was just up on the rocks on the side of the lake.
[0:38:07 – 0:38:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:08 – 0:38:09] Adam: Great.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:10] Erik: Marvelous.
[0:38:10 – 0:38:11] Erik: That’s marvelous.
[0:38:11 – 0:38:24] Erik: It’s happened, but to have a huge group like that just abandon canoes and instead of going back from where they came, just press on forward and then stick a thumb out.
[0:38:25 – 0:38:28] Erik: Just to go back to your campsite, which is still miles away from…
[0:38:29 – 0:38:30] Erik: I just don’t get it.
[0:38:30 – 0:38:31] Erik: I mean, there’s got to be…
[0:38:32 – 0:38:34] Erik: There’s so many different takes on the story.
[0:38:34 – 0:38:38] Adam: Can we get the Freedom of Information request in to get that 911 call?
[0:38:39 – 0:38:43] Adam: We can probably get the transcripts on that, at least, if not the actual audio.
[0:38:43 – 0:38:43] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:44 – 0:38:45] Erik: Yeah, maybe.
[0:38:45 – 0:38:45] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:46 – 0:38:47] Erik: What lake were they in?
[0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Adam: Oh, Fortown.
[0:38:48 – 0:38:50] Adam: This is Karen on Fortown.
[0:38:50 – 0:38:52] Adam: We need to be a pick-up right now.
[0:38:52 – 0:38:52] Adam: Pick-up?
[0:38:55 – 0:38:55] Adam: Right now.
[0:38:55 – 0:38:57] Erik: Oh, my God.
[0:38:57 – 0:39:00] Adam: We lost our… Our canoes left.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:00] Erik: Yeah.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:09] Erik: I don’t know how you explain that without like, how do you even comprehend like explaining that without realizing in your own head how dumb you are?
[0:39:10 – 0:39:11] Erik: And there is a potential.
[0:39:11 – 0:39:14] Adam: Have you been paying attention to this country for the last year, Eric?
[0:39:14 – 0:39:19] Erik: There are pieces of this story that there could be something that exists that I’m not fully aware of.
[0:39:19 – 0:39:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:39:20 – 0:39:27] Adam: Full credit to this group, but by all accounts… Yeah, Paragus and the Forest Service are just really just like, we’re going to get these guys.
[0:39:27 – 0:39:29] Adam: We’re going to send out a press release on this.
[0:39:29 – 0:39:31] Adam: We’re going to make an example of these four-town bozos.
[0:39:31 – 0:39:34] Erik: No, I guess I’m more thinking… Maybe I’m thinking that there could be…
[0:39:35 – 0:39:52] Erik: a little bit of a better reason as to why they just left the canoes you know some something happened like maybe jimmy like had to poop or something and like it’s just like i don’t know some family dynamic that you can’t fully like understand i’m sure it wasn’t like the easiest day for them like
[0:39:53 – 0:39:58] Adam: We’re just saying, let’s leave them and we’re walking back to our campsite to go have a latte.
[0:39:58 – 0:40:02] Adam: I’m sure it was a rough day if they ended up abandoning three canoes in a muddy river.
[0:40:03 – 0:40:07] Adam: Probably not having a great time, but still.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:10] Erik: I’m sure it’s so foreign for them considering…
[0:40:11 – 0:40:18] Erik: Every other form of outdoor activities that people get themselves involved in, hiking, whatever, wherever you are, yeah, all right.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:21] Erik: Let’s just leave, go, we’ll start from scratch.
[0:40:21 – 0:40:31] Erik: But there’s just that piece, if it’s your first time in the boundary water, is that you don’t necessarily make that connection of like, oh, wait.
[0:40:31 – 0:40:33] Adam: Anything you get yourself into, you got to get yourself out of.
[0:40:34 – 0:40:35] Adam: Yeah, which doesn’t typically…
[0:40:35 – 0:40:38] Adam: It’s just basic self-reliance that people just don’t seem to grasp anymore.
[0:40:38 – 0:40:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:40:38 – 0:40:44] Erik: Well, they don’t – it doesn’t exist in any – even if you are saying, yeah, I’m going camping this weekend.
[0:40:45 – 0:40:46] Erik: I’m going hiking for the day.
[0:40:47 – 0:40:50] Erik: Like, yeah, the phone call is always there.
[0:40:50 – 0:40:53] Erik: The bail, like the parachute always exists.
[0:40:54 – 0:40:59] Erik: The Boundary Waters is not really one of those places where it exists and people are so used to that.
[0:40:59 – 0:41:01] Erik: Just like, oh, things got hard.
[0:41:02 – 0:41:04] Erik: Let’s just quit mentality.
[0:41:04 – 0:41:04] Erik: Yeah.
[0:41:05 – 0:41:10] Erik: It probably just carries over into an area where that’s not an option to just quit.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:16] Erik: I mean, it is, but you’re going to get written up about in the newspaper and then talked about a bunch because it’s…
[0:41:17 – 0:41:20] Adam: What’s the policy at Clearwater if somebody abandons the canoe?
[0:41:20 – 0:41:23] Adam: Does that count as, like, a completely destroyed canoe?
[0:41:23 – 0:41:28] Adam: If you have to spend, like, three days of your staff’s time to go recover gear?
[0:41:28 – 0:41:30] Erik: I mean, we don’t really have a policy in place.
[0:41:30 – 0:41:33] Erik: It doesn’t happen enough for it to be, but I don’t… Yeah, but they, like, sign…
[0:41:33 – 0:41:38] Adam: Anybody who’s renting a canoe from you, like, signs something saying, like, they’re responsible for the canoe, right?
[0:41:38 – 0:41:40] Erik: Well, yes, in terms of it being, like, destroyed.
[0:41:40 – 0:41:41] Adam: You have their credit card on file?
[0:41:41 – 0:41:42] Erik: Yeah, but not…
[0:41:43 – 0:41:45] Erik: If it just gets left somewhere, there’s not that language in there.
[0:41:45 – 0:41:50] Adam: Well, I mean, say it takes two of your staff two full days to recover all the gear.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:53] Adam: What’s your labor cost on that?
[0:41:53 – 0:41:55] Adam: Does that just transfer immediately to them then?
[0:41:55 – 0:41:57] Adam: I mean, I would think that would be fair.
[0:41:57 – 0:41:58] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:41:58 – 0:41:58] Adam: I mean.
[0:41:58 – 0:42:02] Adam: I don’t think they could really probably fight that too hard.
[0:42:03 – 0:42:04] Adam: Well, we got to get our canoes back.
[0:42:04 – 0:42:05] Adam: You’re the one who left them out there.
[0:42:05 – 0:42:06] Erik: Yeah.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:06] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:12] Adam: I would tend to, if I was the outfitter, just say, yeah, that’s three completely wrecked canoes.
[0:42:12 – 0:42:13] Adam: You’re paying for them all.
[0:42:14 – 0:42:17] Erik: Well, in that case, then that’s thousands and thousands of dollars.
[0:42:17 – 0:42:17] Adam: Yeah.
[0:42:17 – 0:42:17] Adam: What are you going to do?
[0:42:17 – 0:42:18] Adam: Take me to court?
[0:42:18 – 0:42:19] Adam: You’re in the timber, Jay.
[0:42:20 – 0:42:24] Adam: Basically just saying, yeah, we abandoned them on purpose because we were uncomfortable.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:24] Adam: Yeah.
[0:42:24 – 0:42:25] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:42:25 – 0:42:34] Erik: I mean, I think it’s still at the point where it’s going to be an anomaly, where if it happens, it’s going to get talked about in this fashion.
[0:42:35 – 0:42:42] Erik: It’s not happening so often that people and or outfitters are writing that into their rental policies.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:42] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:42:43 – 0:42:53] Erik: But it was an interesting thought when you’re reading about like, well, it’s not an emergency to enough of an extent that search and rescue is going to go and do anything about it.
[0:42:53 – 0:43:04] Erik: So it’s up to the outfitter to rescue their canoes, which then it’s like, okay, well then, yeah, how do you get compensated for that time, effort?
[0:43:05 – 0:43:07] Erik: And it happens to us occasionally.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:10] Erik: We had just a couple of weeks ago,
[0:43:10 – 0:43:14] Adam: Yeah, what’s not getting done because these staff have to be out rescuing the gear.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:15] Adam: Well, there’s that for sure.
[0:43:16 – 0:43:19] Erik: Yeah, but just as an example, we had a phone call.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:27] Erik: There was a day two, three weeks ago on Clearwater and just generally in the area, just horrible northeast winds.
[0:43:27 – 0:43:30] Erik: We rescued 11 canoes off of Clearwater with a towboat.
[0:43:31 – 0:43:39] Erik: And over the course of that whole day, we were getting phone calls from the family of this group that was supposed to be off the water.
[0:43:40 – 0:43:41] Erik: And they weren’t back yet.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:43] Erik: And I was telling them, like, it’s… Super windy.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:45] Erik: Very windy.
[0:43:45 – 0:43:46] Erik: They’re on…
[0:43:46 – 0:43:49] Erik: They were down on East Bearskin.
[0:43:49 – 0:43:50] Erik: At least that’s where they put in at.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:54] Erik: Their vehicle is at the public access on East Bearskin.
[0:43:55 – 0:43:58] Erik: So there’s really nothing we can do…
[0:43:59 – 0:44:06] Erik: As an outfitter, I can’t, in good faith, put our staff out on a search and rescue mission.
[0:44:07 – 0:44:11] Erik: I don’t want to necessarily say that you should call 911 or search and rescue, but…
[0:44:13 – 0:44:15] Erik: I’m telling you that I’m doing as much as I can right now.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:16] Erik: They’re hunkered down.
[0:44:17 – 0:44:26] Erik: And that’s what we basically said, was if they’re smart, which it sounds like they’ve been canoeing before, they’re probably just not moving.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:29] Erik: And if you’re concerned enough…
[0:44:30 – 0:44:37] Erik: The next step would be calling search and rescue, but I think it would be a bit of an overstep in terms of like a response here.
[0:44:37 – 0:44:40] Erik: Give them like, they might not be out until tomorrow morning.
[0:44:40 – 0:44:43] Erik: Obviously, honestly, if it was me, I wouldn’t be paddling in this.
[0:44:44 – 0:44:47] Erik: I could barely manage the John boat out on Clearwater.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:48] Erik: The waves were insane.
[0:44:48 – 0:44:52] Erik: It felt like deadliest catch the way that that water was spraying.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:57] Erik: I almost lost a canoe first time ever on the John boat because two of my knots like completely got jarred loose.
[0:44:58 – 0:44:58] Erik: It was crazy.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:02] Erik: And so, yeah, at a certain point, I can’t put more staff out.
[0:45:03 – 0:45:20] Erik: And I don’t know if where Paragus is at with who they have working for them in terms of do you want to, not that it’s a dangerous situation, but there’s always an increased chance if you’re sending anybody out into the woods to rescue gear in a crazy low river.
[0:45:21 – 0:45:23] Erik: Like, how do you, I don’t even know how you would manage that.
[0:45:23 – 0:45:25] Erik: You got to get the canoes somehow.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:26] Erik: You can’t just leave them out there.
[0:45:27 – 0:45:44] Erik: and I mean I wonder if the Forest Service can do anything in terms of like a I don’t know a leave no trace thing yeah is that considered littering is there a fine that you can get for just like abandoning gear like you clearly didn’t have any intentions on going and getting those again
[0:45:44 – 0:46:12] Adam: yeah like it’s you’ve left a trace they wouldn’t have left them there if they were their own canoes maybe they would have yeah so i don’t know if there’s really any more to say on that but it’s a it’s these are like the jet skiers of this year the the jet skier at isle royale of 2020 is the four town bozos yeah hey if you’re listening four town bozos you can reach us at tumblehomecast at gmail yeah tell us your story what’s your side of the story
[0:46:12 – 0:46:16] Adam: Or you can hit me up on Instagram at tumblehomecast.
[0:46:16 – 0:46:18] Adam: Send us pictures of the site you left the canoes at.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:19] Adam: How muddy was it?
[0:46:22 – 0:46:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:46:24 – 0:46:27] Erik: Also, one thing I wanted to just shout out.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:29] Erik: It’s getting to be that time of year.
[0:46:30 – 0:46:32] Erik: We’re losing our staff.
[0:46:33 – 0:46:35] Erik: And she’s probably driving home right now listening.
[0:46:37 – 0:46:43] Erik: I told her that I was going to make this comment so that if she wasn’t crying, she’s going to start crying.
[0:46:44 – 0:46:44] Adam: Yeah.
[0:46:44 – 0:46:46] Erik: So it’s been a good season.
[0:46:47 – 0:46:49] Erik: We appreciate everything that you did for us.
[0:46:50 – 0:46:53] Erik: And maybe we’ll see you sometime in the future, Jamie.
[0:46:54 – 0:46:59] Adam: Every time I have to drive down 61, I cry until at least I get to Silver Bay.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:02] Adam: And still, to this day, I…
[0:47:02 – 0:47:03] Erik: Oh, you have a home up here now.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:06] Erik: I remember leaving when it was a seasonal job for me.
[0:47:06 – 0:47:07] Adam: No, I was a joke.
[0:47:07 – 0:47:10] Adam: But when I left my first summer, I did.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:12] Adam: I cried the entire way to Duluth.
[0:47:12 – 0:47:12] Adam: I just cried.
[0:47:12 – 0:47:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:15] Erik: Well, it was also a joke.
[0:47:15 – 0:47:17] Erik: Her name’s actually Janeathan.
[0:47:18 – 0:47:18] Adam: Oh.
[0:47:21 – 0:47:23] Adam: Well, there’s always next summer.
[0:47:24 – 0:47:30] Erik: Yep, and there’s no guarantees that being a teacher is reliable work anymore.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:31] Adam: Crazy enough.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:32] Adam: I know.
[0:47:33 – 0:47:36] Erik: So, any final thoughts on…
[0:47:37 – 0:47:38] Adam: I got one question for you.
[0:47:38 – 0:47:41] Adam: Have you listened to the new Taylor Swift album?
[0:47:41 – 0:47:41] Adam: Yes.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:42] Adam: Have you?
[0:47:42 – 0:47:42] Adam: Yes.
[0:47:42 – 0:47:43] Adam: Folklore is amazing.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:44] Erik: It is very good.
[0:47:44 – 0:47:52] Erik: I think there was a comment on our Tumble Home cast about that album, and they said, it’s the first Taylor Swift album I’ve enjoyed.
[0:47:53 – 0:47:53] Adam: Wow.
[0:47:54 – 0:47:55] Adam: 89 is awesome.
[0:47:55 – 0:47:56] Adam: You should definitely check out 89.
[0:47:56 – 0:47:58] Erik: No, I’ve listened to them.
[0:47:59 – 0:48:00] Erik: The first one I’ve ever enjoyed.
[0:48:00 – 0:48:01] Adam: This one’s pretty good, though.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:01] Adam: It is.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:03] Adam: I’ve been listening to it on repeat for the last week.
[0:48:04 – 0:48:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:48:05 – 0:48:08] Adam: Every drive and pretty much every waking moment.
[0:48:08 – 0:48:08] Adam: It’s really great.
[0:48:09 – 0:48:11] Erik: Oh, we’re shouting out albums then right now?
[0:48:12 – 0:48:13] Adam: Yeah, what do you got?
[0:48:13 – 0:48:15] Adam: What’s your jam of your summer?
[0:48:16 – 0:48:17] Erik: Jam of my summer?
[0:48:18 – 0:48:21] Adam: Mine’s Tears Ricochet by Taylor Swift.
[0:48:21 – 0:48:28] Adam: I love that reverberating drum beat set over her beautiful vocals.
[0:48:29 – 0:48:49] Erik: well last year was the vampire weekend album for sure uh this year is probably charlie xcx is how i’m feeling now uh the new hame album is very good but i gotta get to that yeah most recently i have been rocking the uh dead album d e h d flower of devotion that’s been a good one um
[0:48:52 – 0:48:57] Erik: And obviously, the Run the Jewels 4 has been pretty regularly.
[0:48:57 – 0:49:06] Adam: Anytime I really need to get jacked up or I’m feeling a little salty, just throw that on and go full blast, max volume in the little car.
[0:49:07 – 0:49:09] Erik: Did you ever watch that Strokes music video I sent you?
[0:49:09 – 0:49:10] Erik: No.
[0:49:10 – 0:49:12] Erik: We watched that last night with Jane.
[0:49:12 – 0:49:12] Erik: It’s so good.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:15] Erik: Ode to the Mets music video.
[0:49:15 – 0:49:19] Erik: If you haven’t watched that, if you’re listening, that is an incredible music video.
[0:49:19 – 0:49:20] Erik: It’s so well done.
[0:49:20 – 0:49:22] Erik: We’ll watch it as soon as we’re done.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:24] Erik: It zooms out for like the whole…
[0:49:24 – 0:49:25] Erik: It’s just crazy.
[0:49:25 – 0:49:26] Erik: It’s like a time thing.
[0:49:28 – 0:49:30] Adam: I still haven’t listened to the new Abnormal quite a bit.
[0:49:30 – 0:49:32] Adam: That’s one where I’ve not gotten sick of it yet.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:35] Erik: Yeah, that one’s like, I totally even forgot about that.
[0:49:35 – 0:49:37] Erik: Because that kind of came out like early to mid-winter.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:39 – 0:49:40] Erik: And yeah, I’m still listening to that.
[0:49:40 – 0:49:40] Erik: Still there.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:42] Adam: Still going strong.
[0:49:42 – 0:49:44] Erik: The Tame Impala comes and goes.
[0:49:44 – 0:49:45] Erik: It’s still out there as well.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:50] Erik: But those are my most recent listens.
[0:49:50 – 0:49:51] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:49:51 – 0:49:56] Adam: The new My Morning Jacket, Waterfall 2, is pretty good.
[0:49:57 – 0:49:59] Adam: The first listen, I was just like, I don’t know.
[0:49:59 – 0:50:05] Adam: It’s just a lot of gimmicky nonsense, but no, it’s solid.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:08] Adam: That one took three listens to get into, but that one’s pretty good, too.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:10] Adam: Actually, I should probably get back on that one today.
[0:50:11 – 0:50:18] Adam: Give Folklore a break, because I’ve been, yeah, like I said, just pretty much every time I get in the car, put on Folklore.
[0:50:19 – 0:50:19] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:19 – 0:50:22] Erik: Well, let’s watch Ode to the Mets.
[0:50:22 – 0:50:22] Erik: All right.
[0:50:22 – 0:50:30] Erik: And then I got to run home and pick up my ladies, and I got a pontoon reservation.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:31] Adam: Meet you on the pontoon.
[0:50:31 – 0:50:32] Adam: Catch you on the tune, Eric.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:34] Adam: Catch you on the tune.
[0:50:34 – 0:50:56] Erik: all right for episode 110 oh of tumble home 110 we should say next week uh for sure lake review we’re gonna give away all of our tricks tips and secrets of uh the sneaky uh entry point slash lake that is south south and then i think after that we’re doing uh based on uh again based on
[0:50:58 – 0:50:59] Erik: are Tumble Homecast.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:02] Erik: If you’re not on there, things are happening.
[0:51:02 – 0:51:06] Erik: We’ve discussed portages in the past, but I love the idea of talking about them again.
[0:51:06 – 0:51:12] Erik: We did, like, how you portagen, kind of, but we’re going to just strictly talk bad portages.
[0:51:12 – 0:51:13] Adam: Oh, cool.
[0:51:13 – 0:51:13] Adam: B-b-b-b-b-b-bad.
[0:51:15 – 0:51:17] Erik: Maybe we can do a reverse ranker.
[0:51:18 – 0:51:18] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:18 – 0:51:20] Erik: Top five worst portages.
[0:51:20 – 0:51:20] Adam: Worst portages.
[0:51:21 – 0:51:22] Erik: So if you have…
[0:51:22 – 0:51:23] Erik: This is two weeks out.
[0:51:23 – 0:51:25] Erik: We’ll post this on all the places.
[0:51:25 – 0:51:30] Erik: But if you’ve got opinions and you want to send us an email at tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:32] Erik: Worst portage…
[0:51:33 – 0:51:35] Erik: It doesn’t necessarily have to be the portage.
[0:51:35 – 0:51:38] Erik: It could be a horrible experience on a portage.
[0:51:38 – 0:51:39] Erik: Absolutely.
[0:51:39 – 0:51:42] Erik: We’re talking bad stuff in a couple of weeks, bad portages.
[0:51:42 – 0:51:57] Erik: Yeah, there’s some out there that are just inherently bad, but there’s some that if the conditions were really bad or maybe like there was that one time where we forgot the fishing rods going down the magnetic river where we had to bushwhack with a four-person.
[0:51:57 – 0:51:58] Adam: That was bad.
[0:51:58 – 0:52:00] Adam: That was bad.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:00] Adam: That fits the bill.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:06] Adam: Or like every time I’ve ever done the Poplar to Meads one, that one’s terrible.
[0:52:06 – 0:52:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:13] Erik: So maybe we’ll come at it with a little ranker, maybe top like three worst, and then we’ll read your responses.
[0:52:15 – 0:52:16] Erik: And then after that, who knows?
[0:52:17 – 0:52:17] Adam: Portage rankers.
[0:52:18 – 0:52:20] Erik: Portage rankers and the Lake Review is coming up.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:22] Erik: Thank you for listening.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:32] Erik: You can continue on where you were starting all of the 10 sign-offs that we have now.
[0:52:32 – 0:52:34] Adam: Enjoy the rest of your Saturdays, Eric.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:38] Erik: Zonk, zonks, pass me another.
[0:52:39 – 0:52:42] Adam: As we always say, life is precious and every day is a miracle.
[0:52:42 – 0:52:43] Adam: Thank you for listening.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:50] Adam: This has been episode 110 of Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast coming to you live from Studio K here with the mimosas and the big beers.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:53] Adam: Shout out again to our beer sponsors, Josh and Siri.
[0:52:54 – 0:52:54] Adam: Did I get that right?
[0:52:54 – 0:52:56] Adam: Well, you still got a lot of porter left over here.
[0:52:56 – 0:52:58] Adam: Take a slug of that porter.
[0:52:58 – 0:52:58] Adam: Holy moly.
[0:52:58 – 0:53:05] Adam: I already finished my smoking hot Chipotle blonde and crushed that Ager Brewing Company.
[0:53:05 – 0:53:05] Adam: Cue the chiptunes.
[0:53:05 – 0:53:06] Erik: Yours is 5%.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:07] Erik: My porter is 7%.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:08] Erik: All right.
[0:53:08 – 0:53:12] Adam: I’m going to help Eric finish this porter, and we’re going to watch some music videos, and then we’re going tuning.
[0:53:12 – 0:53:12] Adam: All right, folks.
[0:53:12 – 0:53:13] Erik: I’m going to operate a tune later.
[0:53:15 – 0:53:18] Adam: Remember to stay safe and use that SPF 50.
[0:53:19 – 0:53:19] Adam: You’re thick.
[0:53:19 – 0:53:20] Adam: Slather it on.
[0:53:21 – 0:53:22] Adam: Just put it on and then put more on.
[0:53:22 – 0:53:25] Adam: You can never have enough of that sweet SPF 50.
[0:53:25 – 0:53:25] Adam: Good night.
[0:53:25 – 0:53:28] Erik: The first episode under an hour we’ve had in a long time.
[0:53:28 – 0:53:29] Adam: It’s still before noon.
[0:53:29 – 0:53:32] Erik: We’ll just let her run for seven minutes just of silence.
[0:53:33 – 0:53:34] Erik: Maybe we’ll come back.
[0:53:34 – 0:53:34] Erik: Maybe we won’t.
[0:53:37 – 0:53:42] Adam: It had a marvelous time ruining everything.
