Episode Transcript
[0:00:35 – 0:00:45] Erik: Welcome to the Round Lake parking lot and tumble home and in the field lake review episode.
[0:00:46 – 0:00:54] Erik: I am Eric, joined as always by my good friend Adam, wearing his sharp new Stolquist life jacket.
[0:00:54 – 0:00:55] Erik: Hello, Adam.
[0:00:56 – 0:00:56] Adam: Good morning.
[0:00:57 – 0:00:58] Adam: Yes, we’re matching now.
[0:00:58 – 0:01:00] Adam: I’m on team Stolquist as well.
[0:01:01 – 0:01:04] Adam: So thanks for Stolquist for sponsoring the show.
[0:01:04 – 0:01:04] Adam: We love you.
[0:01:06 – 0:01:06] Erik: We love you.
[0:01:06 – 0:01:10] Erik: What did you end up doing with that baby blue child’s life jacket that you always used to wear?
[0:01:11 – 0:01:14] Adam: It’s still hanging in Studio K as a remembrance to the good old days.
[0:01:16 – 0:01:18] Adam: But it shall never go out on another trip, hopefully.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:22] Adam: This thing’s a lot more comfortable, and all these pockets are quite wonderful.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:22] SPEAKER_01: Yep.
[0:01:25 – 0:01:30] Adam: We were saying as we were pulling in here, I said, how many cars do you think are going to be in the lot on May 12th?
[0:01:30 – 0:01:31] Adam: It’s a Tuesday.
[0:01:32 – 0:01:37] Adam: And currently no overnight paddling trips are allowed and no campfires.
[0:01:38 – 0:01:39] Adam: And Eric was right.
[0:01:39 – 0:01:40] Adam: There’s nobody else here.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:43] Adam: We’ve got the entire Round Lake parking lot to ourselves.
[0:01:44 – 0:01:53] Erik: So, yeah, the date on which this episode comes out may be after any kind of restrictions are lifted.
[0:01:53 – 0:01:54] Erik: We’re not sure.
[0:01:54 – 0:01:57] Erik: If you’re listening from the future, we sure hope the Boundary Waters is open.
[0:01:57 – 0:01:59] Erik: But as of today, it’s only open for day use.
[0:02:00 – 0:02:01] Erik: And that’s what we’re intending on doing.
[0:02:01 – 0:02:09] Erik: Taking advantage of that day use to go out and do a tumble home first, which is campsite reviews in the field.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:11] Erik: We’re going to review all 10 campsites.
[0:02:12 – 0:02:36] Erik: campsites on tuscarora lake and hopefully uh wet a line maybe find a lake trout um but in the past when we’ve done lake reviews it’s always been uh just my opinion that i’ve posted and had time to think about so it should be fun to go through and do this together and make kind of some observations and grades all at once in the field um
[0:02:38 – 0:02:47] Erik: I’m kind of looking forward to it because there’s only been a couple of campsites that I’ve ever stopped at on Tuscarora, so I’m looking forward to getting an idea on what the majority of those sites are like out there.
[0:02:47 – 0:02:49] SPEAKER_01: Have you ever camped on any of them?
[0:02:49 – 0:02:55] Adam: I’ve camped on one site on Tuscarora, and that was a fun story, and we’ll save that for at the campsite.
[0:02:56 – 0:02:59] Adam: But, yeah, I haven’t even really stopped at any of the other ones.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:01] Adam: I have been on a couple.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:03] Adam: I’ve done some campsite reviews for you, but you’re right.
[0:03:03 – 0:03:07] Adam: You always write them up afterwards when you get your pictures sorted out
[0:03:08 – 0:03:10] Adam: So it’ll be fun to just live review these things.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:19] Adam: We’ve done some live campsite reviews on the show before, like just on camping trips, but never attempted to do a whole lake in one day live.
[0:03:20 – 0:03:22] Adam: This should be a very exciting day on the water.
[0:03:23 – 0:03:30] Adam: The weather today is bright blue skies and supposed to get to 50 up here.
[0:03:30 – 0:03:36] Adam: I was looking at like the temp forecast for Ely and for Grand Marais and kind of splitting the difference.
[0:03:36 – 0:03:37] Adam: So I’m going to say we’re looking at maybe 50.
[0:03:38 – 0:03:44] Adam: with a pretty reasonable northwest wind, not too gusty, and that’s about right.
[0:03:44 – 0:03:45] Adam: It’s pretty calm right now.
[0:03:46 – 0:03:51] Erik: Yeah, it’s out of the last week, probably the most reasonable day to be on the water.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:52] Erik: It has been a windy spring.
[0:03:53 – 0:03:56] Erik: Dry, scary dry up here, actually.
[0:03:57 – 0:03:59] Erik: Looking forward to maybe some rain later this week.
[0:03:59 – 0:04:01] Adam: Yeah, looks like we’re going to get some.
[0:04:01 – 0:04:03] Erik: Yeah, so it should be fun.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:06] Erik: It may not all be in the field.
[0:04:06 – 0:04:21] Erik: We might end up supplementing some studio information on fishing specifically, and maybe even we’ll get some more Andy’s elocutions from Tuscarora and find out a little bit more if he’s got anything to say on the matter.
[0:04:22 – 0:04:23] Adam: What does Tuscarora even mean?
[0:04:23 – 0:04:23] Adam: Right?
[0:04:24 – 0:04:24] Adam: That’s the question.
[0:04:26 – 0:04:29] Erik: We are sponsored this week by a sponsored beer.
[0:04:29 – 0:04:32] Erik: This is a real fun can.
[0:04:33 – 0:04:37] Erik: Beaver Island Brewing Northstar Canoes, IPA.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:40] Erik: And we’re going to be sitting in a Northstar…
[0:04:42 – 0:04:44] Erik: 20, Northwind 20, three-seater.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:47] Erik: We’ll surprise you with the mystery guest later.
[0:04:48 – 0:05:00] Erik: These beers were dropped off by a good friend of the show and friend of Clearwater Bear at Northstar as he was delivering our 10 canoes for the season.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:02] Erik: I was unaware that this beer even existed.
[0:05:03 – 0:05:06] Adam: Yeah, it’s got the Kevlar weave on the can.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:07] Erik: Yeah, the can design is great.
[0:05:07 – 0:05:11] Erik: It’s got that dark black weave design.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:13] Erik: The high contrast Kevlar weave.
[0:05:13 – 0:05:13] Erik: Yep.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:17] Erik: So these are India pale ales.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:19] Erik: Damn fine canoes.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:26] Erik: It’s not the first time we’ve shared a beer pre-noon in the Round Lake parking lot.
[0:05:26 – 0:05:27] Erik: Cheers.
[0:05:27 – 0:05:29] Adam: It’s become my annual tradition, unlike any other.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:38] Erik: Can you remember what did we have before the Heart of the Park trip?
[0:05:38 – 0:05:40] Erik: What were we drinking in the parking lot?
[0:05:40 – 0:05:41] Erik: It doesn’t come to mind.
[0:05:42 – 0:05:42] Adam: Saga?
[0:05:43 – 0:05:44] Erik: Yeah, maybe.
[0:05:45 – 0:05:51] Erik: I think it was a sponsorship from Mike, the guy that I was out on the water with in May fishing for that one day.
[0:05:51 – 0:05:54] Erik: I think those are the beers that we had for whatever reason.
[0:05:54 – 0:05:56] Adam: Like a tumble, a wiki tumble.
[0:05:57 – 0:06:00] Adam: At this point, as we’re approaching 100, we got to.
[0:06:01 – 0:06:05] Adam: With that amount of episodes out there, it’s hard to keep track of everything.
[0:06:05 – 0:06:13] Adam: You know, we did start the beer app thing, which we got like a general list, but I don’t know what episodes, which beer goes to what, you know?
[0:06:14 – 0:06:14] Erik: Right, exactly.
[0:06:14 – 0:06:16] Erik: I think I’ve definitely neglected that.
[0:06:16 – 0:06:24] Erik: Things have gotten a little bit more diffused in the last couple of months with what’s a numbered episode, what’s not, what’s sponsored, what’s not.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:24] Erik: So…
[0:06:26 – 0:06:36] Erik: Maybe after 100 we’ll double down and get back into the beer sponsorship and maybe we’ll have enough patrons out there.
[0:06:37 – 0:06:39] Erik: Oh, also brought to you by our friends on Patreon.
[0:06:39 – 0:06:47] Erik: Maybe we’ll have enough patrons out there to pay like an assistant to put together our Wikipedia page.
[0:06:47 – 0:06:47] Adam: Search assistant.
[0:06:48 – 0:06:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:06:48 – 0:06:52] Erik: Go back through, listen to every show, and catalog it in its own wiki, tumble wiki.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:55] Erik: So, yeah, we’re going to get out on the water.
[0:06:55 – 0:06:59] Erik: My first day on the water in 2020.
[0:07:01 – 0:07:04] Erik: Probably the latest, I would say, in a canoe for me.
[0:07:04 – 0:07:06] Erik: But it’s been cold.
[0:07:07 – 0:07:09] Adam: Got to hear the Ron Shera’s fact of the day, Eric.
[0:07:09 – 0:07:12] Erik: Yes, Ron Shera’s fact of the day.
[0:07:12 – 0:07:13] Erik: We don’t have the calendar with us.
[0:07:14 – 0:07:15] Adam: I looked at it before we left.
[0:07:16 – 0:07:41] Adam: orioles are arriving from central americano wow i don’t think i saw one actually what we have orioles up here i don’t know if i did or not it looked like an oriole but you know i’m not very good with my birds my bird game is not strong i literally have a robin nesting in a spruce tree in the yard and i got a glimpse of it and i was like oh that looks like something weird and i got out the selfie stick and uh went up i didn’t want to i wanted a picture but i didn’t want to disturb the nest
[0:07:42 – 0:07:47] Adam: And I got the selfie stick out, and I got some pictures, and then I got my books out, and I was like, oh, it’s just a robin.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:49] Adam: Wow, a tortoise.
[0:07:49 – 0:07:51] Adam: I should have been able to ID that one from the ground probably.
[0:07:51 – 0:07:53] Erik: Yeah, tortoise migratorious.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:58] Erik: That’s a real fun adventure you had there with a very common bird.
[0:07:58 – 0:08:01] Adam: And, yeah, now you know that I have a selfie stick.
[0:08:01 – 0:08:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:02] Adam: Did you know that?
[0:08:02 – 0:08:03] Erik: I was not aware.
[0:08:04 – 0:08:04] Erik: Did you bring it today?
[0:08:05 – 0:08:05] Adam: No, I should have.
[0:08:05 – 0:08:06] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:09] Adam: All right, let’s get on the water, eh?
[0:08:09 – 0:08:09] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:09 – 0:08:11] Erik: Yeah, I’m looking forward to that Tuscarora portage.
[0:08:12 – 0:08:12] Erik: Oh, boy.
[0:08:12 – 0:08:13] Erik: It’s only a day trip, though.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:14] Erik: Just think about that.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:16] Erik: It’s just basically going to be a hike.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:17] Adam: I like that portage at this point.
[0:08:17 – 0:08:21] Adam: I mean, this has kind of become like our secondary home water.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:23] Adam: We go out around Lakemore and almost anywhere now.
[0:08:23 – 0:08:24] Erik: Yeah, we were talking about that, too.
[0:08:25 – 0:08:27] Erik: This is just the go-to for tumble home these days.
[0:08:28 – 0:08:35] Erik: But, yeah, we’ll check in from you, probably starting with campsite reviews for you in a matter of seconds.
[0:08:35 – 0:08:37] Erik: For us, it’s probably going to be about an hour.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:38] Adam: Which way are we going to go?
[0:08:39 – 0:08:40] Adam: Which campsite will be first?
[0:08:42 – 0:08:50] Erik: Probably number one, which won’t be the first one we go to, so it’ll be real weird for us to try to keep that in mind as we’re going through.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:53] Erik: Just have to lay off the margarita until we…
[0:08:53 – 0:09:01] Adam: I think we just got to present them in the order that we paddled to them so you can get it in real time, but then they’ll be numbered.
[0:09:01 – 0:09:03] Adam: You can go look at a map to see which one we’re at first.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:05] Adam: It doesn’t have to go in numerical order.
[0:09:05 – 0:09:09] Erik: Well, no, but then it won’t match up with the Danielson numbering system.
[0:09:10 – 0:09:15] Adam: Yeah, no, we’ll just say, like, even if we go to 12 first or 10 first, you know, we’ll say, all right, we’re here at number 10.
[0:09:15 – 0:09:16] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:16 – 0:09:18] Adam: But we’re here first, actually, early in the day.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:19] Erik: Oh, okay.
[0:09:19 – 0:09:19] Erik: There you go.
[0:09:19 – 0:09:20] Erik: That sounds better.
[0:09:20 – 0:09:21] Erik: Yeah, we’ll do that.
[0:09:21 – 0:09:23] Erik: We won’t try to cut it up so it goes 1 through 10.
[0:09:23 – 0:09:24] Adam: I was thinking about that, actually.
[0:09:24 – 0:09:24] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:27] Adam: So it’s good that we got that clarified.
[0:09:27 – 0:09:32] Erik: Yeah, so refer to the show notes to the map with the numbers of the campsites.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:48] Erik: And if we get real ambitious, we might bust out the GoPro, and there may even be a full first ever on Tumble Home, and probably first ever in any form in the world, a full YouTube video devoted to reviewing all campsites on one lake in a day.
[0:09:49 – 0:09:49] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:09:49 – 0:09:52] Adam: Eric, before we go on, are we going to catch a fish today?
[0:09:52 – 0:09:52] Adam: He has to know.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:56] Erik: Um, no, because… Ooh, no, we definitely are.
[0:09:56 – 0:09:58] Adam: I got a secret lure.
[0:09:58 – 0:09:58] Erik: All right.
[0:09:58 – 0:09:59] Erik: I forgot my tackle box.
[0:09:59 – 0:10:01] Erik: You have to spare me a lure.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:02] Erik: I got three lures.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:02] Adam: Nice.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:03] Adam: They’re all gems.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:04] Erik: Sweet.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:05] Erik: All right.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:06] Erik: Well, I’m going to say no.
[0:10:06 – 0:10:07] Adam: You’re going to say yes.
[0:10:07 – 0:10:07] Adam: I hope I’m wrong.
[0:10:07 – 0:10:08] Adam: They’re all rag.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:12] Adam: I got them individually wrapped in foil in my stolequist.
[0:10:12 – 0:10:12] Erik: Sweet.
[0:10:13 – 0:10:13] Erik: All right.
[0:10:14 – 0:10:18] Erik: Well, we’ll check in if we get a fish on the line or from the first campsite we come across.
[0:10:19 – 0:10:22] UNKNOWN: All right.
[0:10:31 – 0:10:33] Erik: All right, we’re out on Campsite 9.
[0:10:34 – 0:10:37] Erik: The video’s going.
[0:10:38 – 0:10:43] Erik: We are going to try to put the video together so that it’s kind of in order, 1 through 10.
[0:10:44 – 0:10:49] Erik: But the audio, this is the first campsite we’re reviewing, and it is Campsite 9.
[0:10:49 – 0:10:57] Erik: Haven’t gone up into the site yet, but I’ve always paddled by it, and I’ve always known it was an excellent site.
[0:10:58 – 0:10:59] Adam: Often people here.
[0:10:59 – 0:10:59] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:11:00 – 0:11:10] Adam: i wouldn’t even think of approaching this site in the summer you see people sunning themselves on the rock you just keep on going don’t crowd them don’t crowd them so yeah the first time i’ve set foot here
[0:11:10 – 0:11:11] Erik: Yeah, same for me.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:21] Erik: So 9, again, show notes for the map with the numbers, but 9 is the campsite directly south of the portage in from Missing Link, which we just came across.
[0:11:22 – 0:11:26] Erik: Surprised to experience and have to tread over some snow.
[0:11:26 – 0:11:29] Erik: I was a little shocked to still see that much snow.
[0:11:30 – 0:11:30] Erik: Frozen mud.
[0:11:30 – 0:11:33] Adam: Yeah, we had a couple frozen puddles.
[0:11:33 – 0:11:34] Adam: Yeah, it’s cold out here.
[0:11:34 – 0:11:35] Adam: It was a fast track, though.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:37] Adam: Pretty nice portaging conditions.
[0:11:37 – 0:11:38] Erik: Very fast.
[0:11:38 – 0:11:39] Adam: Not too much mud.
[0:11:39 – 0:11:41] Adam: What mud was there was pretty much froze.
[0:11:41 – 0:11:43] Erik: Exactly, yeah.
[0:11:43 – 0:11:44] Erik: But it’s beautiful out here.
[0:11:44 – 0:11:45] Erik: It feels great to be back in the park.
[0:11:46 – 0:11:57] Erik: It has been over half a year, and it’s almost like there’s some kind of an overbearing worldwide crisis right now that this really makes me feel much better.
[0:11:58 – 0:12:00] Erik: Just the first hour of being out here, I just feel…
[0:12:01 – 0:12:02] Erik: I feel great.
[0:12:02 – 0:12:03] Erik: So, Campsite 9.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:08] Erik: We’re going to go through and do our typical reviews, but we’re doing them on the fly.
[0:12:09 – 0:12:12] Erik: I haven’t gone up into this site, but hard to not give this landing.
[0:12:13 – 0:12:18] Erik: It’s a sweet, like, shallow-y, your classic Boundary Waters site.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:24] Erik: Shallow, gradual rock kind of going down into the lake, leading up into the camp.
[0:12:25 – 0:12:27] Erik: Hard not to give the landing just a solid A.
[0:12:28 – 0:12:30] Erik: Do you have any other comments on the landing?
[0:12:30 – 0:12:33] Erik: It’s like almost 360 degrees around.
[0:12:33 – 0:12:36] Adam: Yeah, you got multiple natural marinas here.
[0:12:37 – 0:12:40] Adam: And on approach, you notice some really good rock structure off the point.
[0:12:40 – 0:12:42] Adam: We can show some of the marina boom operator.
[0:12:42 – 0:12:45] Adam: So you could definitely swim here.
[0:12:45 – 0:12:47] Adam: Really nice swimming potential.
[0:12:47 – 0:12:49] Adam: And I would think casting potential.
[0:12:49 – 0:12:53] Adam: Some pretty good structure right off the tip of the point here.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:56] Adam: And deep water adjacent, so…
[0:12:57 – 0:12:58] Adam: Yeah, absolutely.
[0:12:58 – 0:13:00] Erik: Give this a solid A on the landing.
[0:13:00 – 0:13:03] Erik: Solid A. I’m excited to see what the main camp looks like up here.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:09] Erik: It’s got the very prominent rock-surrounded fire grate.
[0:13:10 – 0:13:12] Erik: Maybe a little bit of protection, but…
[0:13:13 – 0:13:20] Erik: quite exposed, I would say, if there’s anything right off the bat that might not be a good part of this site.
[0:13:20 – 0:13:27] Erik: You get a little bit of wind going through on a nasty day, but keeps the bugs down most of the year.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:28] Adam: Look at this nice cedar right here.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:33] Erik: A very nice, relatively lightly bobbed cedar.
[0:13:34 – 0:13:35] Adam: Several hatchet marks.
[0:13:35 – 0:13:37] Adam: Yeah, I like the fire grate.
[0:13:37 – 0:13:41] Adam: I mean, yeah, it’s kind of out here, but you got really good views and it’s almost a 270.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:43] Adam: Yeah, it’s a 270 view.
[0:13:44 – 0:13:44] Erik: Solid view.
[0:13:45 – 0:13:53] Erik: Not the greatest little corral, camp corral around the fire grate with the bench seats, but we bring camp chairs anyway.
[0:13:53 – 0:13:54] Erik: It doesn’t really affect me.
[0:13:55 – 0:14:01] Adam: Yeah, slightly monkey wrenched on the edge here, but this is a pretty good new age fire grate.
[0:14:01 – 0:14:05] Erik: Yeah, you could definitely put a pizza biter on that gauge and wouldn’t have it fall through.
[0:14:07 – 0:14:15] Erik: Yeah, generally, this is, again, on the fly review here, but hard not to give this a solid A as well.
[0:14:15 – 0:14:19] Erik: There’s nothing about this campsite so far that has surprised me because I’ve gone by it so many times you can just tell.
[0:14:20 – 0:14:21] Erik: It’s a nice site.
[0:14:21 – 0:14:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:23 – 0:14:24] Erik: We’ll take a walk out the back here.
[0:14:25 – 0:14:30] Erik: Haven’t really spied for sure any tent pads yet, but it looks pretty open back here.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:44] Erik: One large tent pad just beyond the back of the fire grate with a couple of small tents.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:44] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:47] Adam: You could get a wall tent in here.
[0:14:49 – 0:15:02] Erik: I think the one thing that’s coming out so far that is maybe not a good thing for me personally is it doesn’t really have anything that’s screaming out to me in terms of like a sexy hammock tree or hammock options.
[0:15:02 – 0:15:05] Adam: Yeah, you don’t want to really work off that main cedar.
[0:15:05 – 0:15:07] Adam: That’s the focal point of the camp.
[0:15:07 – 0:15:09] Adam: You don’t want to be that close in to the fire grate.
[0:15:09 – 0:15:11] Adam: But yeah, there’s no big pine in here.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:12] Erik: No, right.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:16] Adam: It’s all kind of scrubby balsam and alder, which…
[0:15:17 – 0:15:19] Adam: I’ve seen enough alder this spring already.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:20] Adam: I don’t need to see any more.
[0:15:21 – 0:15:22] Erik: You don’t want to clear some alder?
[0:15:22 – 0:15:23] Erik: You didn’t bring the loppers?
[0:15:24 – 0:15:25] Erik: No, I did bring my little saw, though.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:26] Erik: We’ve got to make a brush pile.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:28] Adam: Nice.
[0:15:28 – 0:15:31] Adam: So, yeah, I mean, maybe, yeah, one huge tent pad, but beyond that, not much else.
[0:15:31 – 0:15:34] Adam: You can easily make a hammock work in here, but you’re right.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:34] Adam: There’s not like a…
[0:15:35 – 0:15:38] Adam: there’s not a spot that looks like that needs a hammock in it.
[0:15:38 – 0:15:38] Erik: No.
[0:15:38 – 0:15:39] Erik: Right.
[0:15:39 – 0:15:42] Erik: And there’s nothing like down, you know, you’ve got that massive like rock point.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:45] Erik: That’s really nice, but, um, not much you can do with it.
[0:15:45 – 0:15:51] Erik: Like sleeping wise, it’s all kind of small Jack pine or that one cedar that you don’t want to just, that’s right in camp.
[0:15:52 – 0:15:56] Erik: So, um, yeah, I guess that would be the one thing I would take away from it.
[0:15:57 – 0:16:00] Erik: And I’m going with, uh, this is a solid a minus.
[0:16:01 – 0:16:03] Adam: Check out, is this a little beaver action here?
[0:16:03 – 0:16:04] Adam: Or is this a Bobby action?
[0:16:05 – 0:16:09] Adam: That looks, well, Bobby probably needs… Bobby was going at it with his teeth.
[0:16:10 – 0:16:13] Erik: I would say Bobby probably needs to get checked out if that’s a Bobby scenario.
[0:16:13 – 0:16:15] Erik: That definitely looks like a beaver activity.
[0:16:17 – 0:16:19] Adam: You think there’s anything else back there?
[0:16:19 – 0:16:20] Adam: There’s got to be one more tent spot.
[0:16:20 – 0:16:21] Erik: Yeah, maybe.
[0:16:21 – 0:16:23] Erik: I’m sure it’s just a latrine path.
[0:16:24 – 0:16:28] Erik: I don’t know if we’re going to review every latrine, but…
[0:16:30 – 0:16:35] Erik: Yeah, you could definitely call this another light tent pad here.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:37] Erik: Maybe.
[0:16:37 – 0:16:38] Erik: It’s a little lumpy, though.
[0:16:38 – 0:16:38] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:16:39 – 0:16:41] Adam: Yeah, this is the privacy sector.
[0:16:41 – 0:16:42] Adam: The privacy lumps.
[0:16:42 – 0:16:43] Erik: Yeah, this is the couples.
[0:16:44 – 0:16:44] Erik: This is…
[0:16:44 – 0:16:51] Adam: Yeah, the kids, you know, or the cousins stay down there, and then this is where you set up after everybody’s gone to bed for the night.
[0:16:51 – 0:16:54] SPEAKER_01: The cousins.
[0:16:54 – 0:16:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:16:55 – 0:16:55] Adam: Pretty good.
[0:16:55 – 0:16:57] Adam: Are you going, what’s your grade?
[0:16:57 – 0:16:58] Adam: Give it a good B+.
[0:16:58 – 0:17:01] Erik: B+, A-, Campsite 9, in the books.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:03] Erik: We’ll check in with you.
[0:17:03 – 0:17:09] Erik: We’re going to 10 next to hopefully avoid the northwest winds that are maybe coming in this afternoon.
[0:17:11 – 0:17:14] Erik: And we’re hoping we’re going to find a sand beach maybe.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:53] Erik: a bad boat be good boat campsite 10 the last campsite on we did it we got all 10 we’re done see ya um yeah so this is the second one we’ve been to um you can hear the boat
[0:17:54 – 0:18:13] Erik: being bad being bad getting jostled on the rocks like a real bad boy we’re probably being a treat be quiet we’re probably being bad to the boat ourselves uh this is down on the uh south east corner of the lake just basically you could probably walk through the woods and and go uh fish from shore on uh what was it augaday
[0:18:14 – 0:18:14] Adam: Agade.
[0:18:14 – 0:18:15] Erik: Agade.
[0:18:15 – 0:18:15] Erik: Agade.
[0:18:16 – 0:18:20] Erik: And if you really wanted to, you could take the 30 rod portage into Thelma.
[0:18:20 – 0:18:23] Erik: That’s where the green-eared sunfish are thick as thieves.
[0:18:25 – 0:18:26] Erik: Or it’s full of bream, Eric.
[0:18:27 – 0:18:29] Erik: Full of bream and green-eared sunfish.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:30] Erik: Oh, they exist.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:31] Erik: Uh, yeah.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:35] Erik: Landing C. Pretty small, kind of janky.
[0:18:35 – 0:18:37] Adam: Special kind of C though.
[0:18:37 – 0:18:41] Adam: Like in lower water, maybe this is a shelf for sitting or lounging in the water.
[0:18:41 – 0:18:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:43] Erik: Oh, that would be like a nice water couch.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:44] Erik: Aqua couch.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:45] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:45 – 0:18:46] Erik: Aqua couch is a potential.
[0:18:48 – 0:19:08] Erik: it’s an aqua davenport ah wow there you go throwback to pronto pub lodge uh but i mean it looks uh it looks interesting yeah it also looks small and uh kind of unused just off the out of the get-go uh never boring but never boring
[0:19:08 – 0:19:11] Erik: Never boring, but maybe not very amenable.
[0:19:12 – 0:19:18] Erik: There’s some very steep and tall-ish steps to get up to the campsite.
[0:19:19 – 0:19:22] Erik: We can maybe take a walk over here just to see.
[0:19:22 – 0:19:24] Erik: Maybe a little bit of an easier way up into camp.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:28] Erik: Maybe a little bit of a nicer marina right here.
[0:19:28 – 0:19:29] Adam: This is the chute.
[0:19:29 – 0:19:30] Adam: Yeah, this is where you want to unload.
[0:19:31 – 0:19:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:32 – 0:19:37] Erik: All right, I’ll bump it up to a C-plus now that I’ve located the side marina.
[0:19:39 – 0:19:40] Erik: We’ll take a walk up into camp.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:44] Erik: Nice big cedar.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:49] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know about this.
[0:19:52 – 0:19:53] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:19:53 – 0:19:55] SPEAKER_01: I love it.
[0:19:56 – 0:19:56] SPEAKER_01: Yeah?
[0:19:56 – 0:20:00] SPEAKER_01: You’ve never seen a fire grate like this.
[0:20:01 – 0:20:03] Erik: It’s basically on an angled rock.
[0:20:04 – 0:20:06] Erik: But it is way up above the lake.
[0:20:06 – 0:20:07] Erik: So you’ve got like…
[0:20:09 – 0:20:35] Erik: amazing views to the west but like i don’t know how do you sit next to this thing you’re not setting a camp chair up that’s for sure yeah lean right in here in this uh alleyway there is definitely a little uh groove there yeah i guess you could get real personal with it like that i don’t know about that maybe on that side
[0:20:36 – 0:20:38] Erik: Yeah, so, I don’t know.
[0:20:38 – 0:20:44] Erik: It’s, again, very unique, but I don’t know how I feel about giving it a solid grade.
[0:20:45 – 0:20:48] Erik: Maybe, there you go.
[0:20:49 – 0:20:50] Erik: This is a small campsite.
[0:20:50 – 0:20:51] Adam: Yeah, ride this one side saddle.
[0:20:52 – 0:20:54] Adam: This is an old-fashioned riding pit.
[0:20:56 – 0:20:58] Erik: Old-fashioned riding pit.
[0:21:00 – 0:21:04] Erik: Yeah, but the view, I mean, I think I’ll give it a C plus just because of the view.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:05] Adam: Yeah, sure.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:06] Erik: Up on this.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:08] Adam: You can figure it out.
[0:21:08 – 0:21:09] Erik: You can figure it out.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:10] Erik: It’s not a big campsite.
[0:21:10 – 0:21:12] Erik: I definitely wouldn’t suggest large groups.
[0:21:12 – 0:21:14] Erik: I don’t know how you get nine people around this thing.
[0:21:15 – 0:21:15] Erik: That’d be crazy.
[0:21:16 – 0:21:20] Erik: I don’t see anything that’s jumping out in terms of, like, hammocking over the water.
[0:21:20 – 0:21:23] Erik: It’s kind of a little bit of a scrubbier forest out the back here.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:26] Adam: It’s wild feeling, though.
[0:21:26 – 0:21:26] Erik: I like it.
[0:21:26 – 0:21:27] Erik: It is wild feeling.
[0:21:28 – 0:21:29] Erik: Maybe one…
[0:21:30 – 0:21:59] Erik: tent pad for sure there and maybe a second one i would say on the way back to the latrine this is a small campsite for maybe two to three or four people maybe um you know jumping off point for a bream trip yes you know for you and your you know your uncle just you and your uncle going fishing for bream yeah this is the perfect spot to get so what’s your grade
[0:22:00 – 0:22:01] Adam: Give it a C-plus overall.
[0:22:01 – 0:22:03] Erik: That’s exactly what I was thinking.
[0:22:03 – 0:22:06] Adam: It would be worse, but it’s interesting enough to get the C-plus.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:17] Erik: Yes, it gets the plus for the uniqueness, the view, which is quite grand, probably the biggest view on the lake, I would say, so far.
[0:22:17 – 0:22:19] Erik: Obviously, we’ve only been to one other campsite.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:27] Erik: But, yeah, it’s got a little bit of that unique flair that is bumping it up to a potential B-minus, but C-plus, I think, is still pushing it.
[0:22:29 – 0:22:36] Erik: So yeah, Campsite 10, we’re going to go hit Thelma for a trolling run for some bream and green-eared sunfish.
[0:22:36 – 0:22:40] Erik: I think we’re coming at you from the south side of the lake next.
[0:22:41 – 0:22:41] UNKNOWN: Namaste.
[0:22:56 – 0:22:57] Erik: Campsite 7.
[0:22:57 – 0:22:58] Erik: We’re paddling in.
[0:22:59 – 0:23:02] Erik: It’s on the south side of the big lake known as Tusk.
[0:23:02 – 0:23:04] Erik: We’re blowing up the mystery paddler now.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:05] Erik: There she is.
[0:23:05 – 0:23:05] Erik: Hi.
[0:23:08 – 0:23:09] Erik: It’s Natalie, by the way.
[0:23:11 – 0:23:19] Erik: So, yeah, as we were coming in here, I asked Adam if he thought it was going to be a nice campsite or a bad campsite, and he said it was going to be nice.
[0:23:19 – 0:23:20] Erik: What kind of a campsite is it?
[0:23:21 – 0:23:22] Adam: It doesn’t look promising.
[0:23:22 – 0:23:24] Adam: I was trying to be optimistic.
[0:23:24 – 0:23:28] Adam: You know, it’s in its own little private bay back here, and we’re kind of out of the wind, and it’s nice and sunny.
[0:23:29 – 0:23:32] Adam: So I was hoping we were going to come up on a hidden gem, but…
[0:23:33 – 0:23:37] Adam: The landing is actually not that bad, but it’s not pretty either.
[0:23:37 – 0:23:37] Adam: So I don’t know.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:40] Adam: The landing’s like a just average sea landing.
[0:23:41 – 0:23:41] Adam: It’s okay.
[0:23:42 – 0:23:43] Erik: Yeah, it’s okay.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:46] Erik: You kind of got to climb out from the back if you’re in the back of the canoe.
[0:23:46 – 0:23:48] Erik: There’s not like a nice broad landing.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:51] Adam: It’s kind of shallow out in front too and a lot of rocks.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:55] Adam: So like fishing from campsite, I would say is probably not going to happen.
[0:23:55 – 0:23:57] Erik: Odd of the question, I would say.
[0:23:57 – 0:24:00] Adam: Unless there’s something else out the backside we haven’t seen yet.
[0:24:00 – 0:24:07] Adam: The whole bay back here is kind of shallow looking from looking at the lake map and the G maps before we came out.
[0:24:08 – 0:24:10] Adam: The G maps.
[0:24:11 – 0:24:12] Adam: That’s the term.
[0:24:13 – 0:24:19] Adam: I don’t know why probably not that many people actually make it down here to this bay.
[0:24:20 – 0:24:24] Erik: Um, well, yeah, it’s one of those things you kind of see it on the map and you’re just like, why would anybody go back there?
[0:24:24 – 0:24:25] Erik: It’s probably not a great site.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:33] Adam: You know, when I was camping, the one time I was out here camping though, we did, we’re, we’re over at five, which we’re going to get to next.
[0:24:33 – 0:24:38] Adam: And we did come back here like to do a little fishing, uh, cause it was a nice spot to get out of the wind.
[0:24:38 – 0:25:01] Adam: essentially uh we didn’t catch anything back here though to my to my recollection of it maybe one pike small pike it seems pretty pikey back here a little weedy pikey shallow warm probably be a good place to fish right now this early season yeah this water is probably about as warm as it’s going to get in the lake right now so it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to put the rods together and maybe whip a couple spoons around in here after this one but
[0:25:02 – 0:25:02] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:25:03 – 0:25:05] Adam: Is the outlet go out farther down this way then?
[0:25:06 – 0:25:07] Adam: There is an outlet, I believe.
[0:25:07 – 0:25:13] Erik: Yes, there is a significant amount of water that flows out of this little back bay into, I don’t have the map right in front of me.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:16] Erik: I don’t remember what that little, there’s a lake that it kind of curls around into.
[0:25:17 – 0:25:21] Erik: So yeah, probably ices out in here relatively early.
[0:25:21 – 0:25:23] Erik: It’s probably pretty warm water.
[0:25:23 – 0:25:26] Erik: If you really wanted to come in here and catch some pike, that’d be…
[0:25:26 – 0:25:34] Adam: I bet there’s some monster pike in here just swimming around a bunch of East Sachs Lucius, just cruising the shallow bays, sunning themselves by the rocks.
[0:25:35 – 0:25:38] Erik: Yeah, I’m going to go ahead and say C- on the landing.
[0:25:38 – 0:25:39] Adam: That’s fair.
[0:25:39 – 0:25:44] Erik: Yeah, so… That’s fair with an E. Yeah, it’s not looking great.
[0:25:44 – 0:25:45] Erik: We’ll take a walk up in here.
[0:25:45 – 0:25:48] Erik: It looks a little shaggy.
[0:25:49 – 0:25:50] Erik: Is that the word?
[0:25:50 – 0:25:52] Erik: A little…
[0:25:54 – 0:25:57] Erik: Ah, yeah, boy, oh boy.
[0:25:57 – 0:25:59] Erik: We’re way up in the woods now.
[0:26:02 – 0:26:07] Adam: I mean, it’s not terrible, but… Look at this beautiful table, Rock.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:08] Adam: Got a nice prep area there.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:12] Adam: You’ve been left with some beautiful kindling.
[0:26:12 – 0:26:16] Adam: And it looks like there hasn’t been a fire in this grate in a year.
[0:26:16 – 0:26:17] UNKNOWN: Right.
[0:26:17 – 0:26:21] Adam: Or somebody, like, scooped it out at the end of last year, because there’s kind of…
[0:26:22 – 0:26:48] Erik: ash plume here but i mean there’s literally nothing in the fire grate yeah it’s just bare rock it doesn’t look like this site has been used oh yeah a little erratic off in the woods there possibly going to go investigate the dolman nope no dolman uh maybe a tent pad right over there yeah that’s a tent pad yeah that’s a tent pad i don’t see much in the way of like
[0:26:48 – 0:26:49] Adam: Crappy little trees.
[0:26:50 – 0:26:50] Erik: Kind of, yeah.
[0:26:50 – 0:26:53] Erik: No pine to speak of.
[0:26:53 – 0:26:54] Erik: Old Jack Pine Bay.
[0:26:54 – 0:26:54] Erik: Yep.
[0:26:56 – 0:26:57] Adam: Yeah, it’s dry in here, too.
[0:26:57 – 0:26:58] Adam: It’s just crazy.
[0:26:58 – 0:26:59] Erik: Oh, it’s so dry.
[0:26:59 – 0:27:00] Erik: God, it needs the rain.
[0:27:01 – 0:27:06] Erik: Yeah, I’m going D-plus on… That’s fair.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:09] Erik: I’m going… All right.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:09] Erik: The fire grate.
[0:27:10 – 0:27:13] Erik: The fire grate, actually, I can’t give much less than a C. It’s pretty standard.
[0:27:13 – 0:27:14] Adam: It’s a good fire grate.
[0:27:14 – 0:27:18] Erik: It’s the only thing holding it together, though, and keeping this from being worse.
[0:27:18 – 0:27:19] Erik: I’m going D-plus overall.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:21] Adam: You could make it work if you had to.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:23] Adam: I mean, I’ve camped in worse spots.
[0:27:23 – 0:27:29] Adam: There’s some cool boulders, but yeah, I don’t believe there’s an additional tent pad unless there’s one way up by the pooper.
[0:27:33 – 0:27:38] Adam: This is the current worst campsite on the lake right now.
[0:27:39 – 0:27:42] Erik: We know we’ve got other good ones out there that we’re going to be heading to.
[0:27:43 – 0:27:46] Erik: Going to five next, which you have stayed at.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:48] Adam: The only one I’ve stayed at was five.
[0:27:48 – 0:27:52] Adam: We came down here to fish, but there’s a reason we didn’t stay down here because this is a crappy site.
[0:27:53 – 0:27:56] Adam: But five is, I can tell you before we even get there, five is pretty nice.
[0:27:57 – 0:27:58] Adam: But it’ll be nice to get back there.
[0:27:58 – 0:28:00] Adam: We were kind of on the paddle over here.
[0:28:00 – 0:28:01] Adam: I was telling you guys a little bit about that.
[0:28:02 – 0:28:07] Adam: It was probably 2014 or 2015 that we did that trip.
[0:28:08 – 0:28:10] Adam: So it’s been a piece since I’ve been in there.
[0:28:10 – 0:28:11] Adam: So it’ll be fun to revisit that site.
[0:28:12 – 0:28:15] Erik: For sure, but Campsite 6, you can make it work.
[0:28:15 – 0:28:18] Erik: It’s not the worst site I’ve ever seen, but it’s just…
[0:28:18 – 0:28:19] Adam: It’s a strong D+.
[0:28:19 – 0:28:22] Erik: Strong, but it’s the strongest D-plus I’ve ever seen.
[0:28:23 – 0:28:26] Adam: I’d rather be a strong D-plus than a weak C-minus.
[0:28:27 – 0:28:29] Erik: Exactly, and that’s pretty much the motto of our show.
[0:28:35 – 0:28:36] Erik: Campsite 6 is…
[0:28:39 – 0:28:42] Erik: Very interesting, I would say, right off the bat.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:46] Adam: There’s a couple of reefs just to the east here.
[0:28:48 – 0:28:56] Adam: If you look at this spot on the satellite maps, you can see there’s a couple of interesting reef and shallow water structures nearby.
[0:28:58 – 0:29:02] Adam: And as you’re approaching, you kind of know it’s coming up, but you don’t really see it until you’re almost on it.
[0:29:02 – 0:29:07] Adam: And then it has its own little beautiful private sand beach landing here in May.
[0:29:08 – 0:29:10] Adam: It’s like water right up to the fire grate almost.
[0:29:10 – 0:29:15] Adam: But you can tell that later in the year you’d have a little more sand out in front.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:17] Adam: Plenty of room for multiple boats.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:25] Adam: And you park the boat and you’re immediately greeted with this somewhat shabby and shallow looking fire grate.
[0:29:25 – 0:29:27] Adam: But the location on it…
[0:29:28 – 0:29:30] Adam: Pretty unusual, and I really enjoy it.
[0:29:31 – 0:29:39] Erik: Yeah, I kind of was thinking right away it might be a little small, but you can, like, stand on the beach and then, like, still be, like, tending to the fire or be near it.
[0:29:40 – 0:29:50] Erik: So, like, sitting in, like, the corral, as it were, a little small, not much to work with, but actually, like, probably one of the more accessible fire grates I’ve seen out here.
[0:29:50 – 0:29:54] Erik: But, yeah, that sand beach landing kind of caught me by surprise.
[0:29:54 – 0:29:54] Erik: It is…
[0:29:55 – 0:29:56] Erik: It’s a thing of beauty.
[0:29:56 – 0:29:58] Adam: I have stayed here, and I don’t remember the sand beach.
[0:29:58 – 0:30:05] Adam: Like, that was not something that stood out to me in my memory of this site, but I don’t know how you could forget something like that.
[0:30:05 – 0:30:06] Adam: It’s pretty nice.
[0:30:07 – 0:30:11] Erik: Yeah, and then, so, yeah, everything, like, a clear A landing.
[0:30:11 – 0:30:12] Erik: That’s a…
[0:30:13 – 0:30:13] Erik: Tough to beat.
[0:30:14 – 0:30:15] Erik: Maybe even A+.
[0:30:15 – 0:30:23] Erik: I mean, anytime you get a sand beach landing right there with a gradual climb up into camp, tough to beat.
[0:30:24 – 0:30:28] Erik: Fire grade, yeah, I mean, B+, B+.
[0:30:28 – 0:30:34] Adam: Yeah, it’s not great on its own, but it’s just the location right here on the waterfront is pretty cool in this instance.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:35] Adam: I like it.
[0:30:35 – 0:30:35] Erik: Yeah, exactly.
[0:30:35 – 0:30:41] Erik: This seems like it would be a really fun summer site on a nice hot day with the water right there.
[0:30:42 – 0:30:50] Erik: do some swimming, maybe casting, not great right off of here, but I think there’s like some access points where you could kind of walk out to this point over here or out the back.
[0:30:50 – 0:30:58] Adam: There’s a big island off here to the north and west, and then you can kind of see water back that way and even off the backside of this little mini point we’re on.
[0:30:58 – 0:31:01] Adam: So you’re kind of surrounded by water and there’s lots of places to go.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:06] Adam: No matter what the wind’s doing, you can get out in the boat and have some reasonable fishing close by.
[0:31:06 – 0:31:16] Adam: Yeah, the one thing which I didn’t realize, I don’t remember the fire grate being this close down to the water, but it makes sense because the time I did camp here, I was going to meet some people out.
[0:31:16 – 0:31:21] Adam: Our friends were out here a couple nights and I was like, I’ll meet you out there on Sunday night.
[0:31:22 – 0:31:27] Adam: You know, if the Packers win, I’ll come out Sunday night, and if the Packers lose, then I’ll just come out in the morning.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:37] Adam: And so I worked all day, and then I went and watched the Packers at Hungry Jack, and they just barely squeaked out a win against the lowly Jets in week two of that season.
[0:31:38 – 0:31:39] Adam: And so I did.
[0:31:39 – 0:31:42] Adam: I quick went home, and I grabbed everything, and I came out here with my solo canoe.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:47] Adam: And I put in, I got down to the lake after a pretty rough portage in which my headlamp kind of died.
[0:31:48 – 0:31:49] Adam: It was very dark.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:52] Adam: And then I got down to the lake and I could just see one fire across the lake.
[0:31:53 – 0:31:55] Adam: I didn’t know where they were going to be, just they were going to be on Tuscarora.
[0:31:56 – 0:32:02] Adam: And so I just paddled towards this fire and I pulled up and as I got close, they’re like, Adam, is that you?
[0:32:02 – 0:32:03] Adam: And it’s like, yeah.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:07] Adam: And like half the people were already asleep and I stayed up quite late that night.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:09] Adam: I was excited to find them.
[0:32:09 – 0:32:15] Adam: It was just, I remember paddling across, it was like dead calm and just the stars, like the Milky Way was reflecting down into the water.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:20] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:20 – 0:32:21] Adam: So it was fun.
[0:32:21 – 0:32:21] Adam: We found them.
[0:32:22 – 0:32:28] Erik: It’s crazy that you came across that Tuscarora portage just in hopes of finding some friends out here.
[0:32:28 – 0:32:29] Erik: In hindsight, it wasn’t a very good plan.
[0:32:30 – 0:32:31] Erik: Right.
[0:32:31 – 0:32:32] Erik: You got extremely lucky.
[0:32:32 – 0:32:36] Adam: I got here and I was able to find a really nice spot for a hammock over here.
[0:32:36 – 0:32:38] Adam: There’s some really good hammock potential.
[0:32:38 – 0:32:39] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:39 – 0:32:41] Adam: And, yeah, a couple of nice flat spots for tents.
[0:32:41 – 0:32:52] Adam: We had six people in here once I got here, and I stayed for another day and did some fishing the next day, and it was a really nice, like, early, I guess, late fall trip, mid-fall trip.
[0:32:52 – 0:32:53] Erik: Mid-fall, yeah.
[0:32:53 – 0:33:03] Erik: And then out the back, like, it’s crazy that the fire grate’s just, like, right on the beach, and then there’s all kinds of room out the back here with, I don’t know, one, two, three…
[0:33:04 – 0:33:05] Adam: Yeah, there’s plenty of spots.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:12] Erik: Plenty of tent spots, plenty of hammock room, and yeah, it’s just a nice sight.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:14] Erik: Yeah, I like hammock point out there.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:15] Erik: Fish jaw in the tree over here.
[0:33:15 – 0:33:17] Erik: Fish jaw in the tree, nice.
[0:33:18 – 0:33:18] Erik: Pike jaw.
[0:33:20 – 0:33:20] Erik: Bobby.
[0:33:21 – 0:33:22] SPEAKER_01: Yikes.
[0:33:22 – 0:33:23] Erik: Bobby’s project.
[0:33:23 – 0:33:24] Erik: Yeah, that’s a little ominous.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:31] Erik: Yeah, so I would say, boy, this is up there with… Got one nice big pine here.
[0:33:33 – 0:33:53] Adam: campsite uh nine for nicest site running so far yeah and i had them you know i’ve actually stayed here so it’s going to get a little higher grade on my end it’s fun to be back it’s been like i said five or six years now since that trip and hell i barely remembered the sand beach but uh good times on that trip yeah so i’m gonna i’m gonna say
[0:33:54 – 0:34:15] Adam: a minus again maybe even a i’m gonna go ahead and say a minus just because the fire grate is just a little just a little weird yeah i don’t know i’ll give it a straight a all right and i like that it’s kind of like south central location on the lake so you pretty much can fish the whole lake from here and yeah you know it’s just a good location
[0:34:15 – 0:34:17] Erik: Northern Lights to the north, obviously.
[0:34:17 – 0:34:18] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:34:19 – 0:34:22] Erik: Yeah, it’s a little, again, still a little jack piney.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:27] Erik: You don’t get the big, big white pines, but there’s one that’s kind of in here starting.
[0:34:27 – 0:34:28] Erik: It’s kind of a young one.
[0:34:28 – 0:34:29] Erik: So now we’re just nitpicking.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:30] Erik: This is a great site.
[0:34:30 – 0:34:38] Erik: It would treat you well any time of year, but especially I could see this being a very fun one in the summer when you can get some water sports going.
[0:34:38 – 0:34:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:59 – 0:35:06] Erik: Welcome to Smooth Landing Camp, campsite number four in the middle of Tuscarora, the one island campsite.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:08] Adam: I guess it is.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:08] Adam: Dead center.
[0:35:09 – 0:35:10] Adam: Dead center.
[0:35:10 – 0:35:10] Adam: Here we are.
[0:35:10 – 0:35:11] Erik: Bullseye.
[0:35:11 – 0:35:13] Erik: Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
[0:35:13 – 0:35:14] Erik: You should have been doing that the whole time.
[0:35:15 – 0:35:19] Adam: You know, Tuscarora feels like a big lake when you’re looking at it on a map.
[0:35:19 – 0:35:21] Adam: You know, it’s like, that’s a big one when you’re out here.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:25] Adam: And it is big, but then it really doesn’t take long to get from one site to the other.
[0:35:25 – 0:35:26] Adam: It’s not that big.
[0:35:26 – 0:35:27] Adam: It’s only medium big.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:28] Adam: It’s not big, big.
[0:35:28 – 0:35:30] Erik: Not big, big.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:33] Erik: But before we get into the review of this…
[0:35:34 – 0:35:36] Erik: Pretty sweet island campsite on Tuscarora.
[0:35:36 – 0:35:40] Erik: I do have to make an addendum to Campsite 5.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:46] Erik: After we finished recording, we found there’s a little back exit that goes out to a sweet…
[0:35:46 – 0:35:48] Adam: I had a retrograde memory moment.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:49] Adam: I was like, I think there’s something over here.
[0:35:49 – 0:35:52] Adam: I wanted to go look at where I had hammock camped.
[0:35:52 – 0:35:57] Adam: And I kind of petted myself in the past.
[0:35:58 – 0:36:00] Adam: I wonder if I could feel that back in the day.
[0:36:00 – 0:36:01] Adam: And then we’re kind of back there.
[0:36:02 – 0:36:05] Adam: messing with myself in the past now.
[0:36:05 – 0:36:07] Adam: And then I saw there’s this big rock back there.
[0:36:08 – 0:36:09] SPEAKER_01: Very nice.
[0:36:09 – 0:36:12] Adam: It jarred a memory loose of drinking wine on a sunny rock.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:13] Adam: And we went back there.
[0:36:14 – 0:36:17] Adam: And it’s a really good spot for a sip or a jump.
[0:36:17 – 0:36:23] Erik: Yeah, both the drinking aspects, you can do that anywhere, but it was very nice and perched up over the lake.
[0:36:23 – 0:36:33] Erik: And specifically the jumping in off of the cliff there, I would say bumps five up, in my opinion, to an A and is now my favorite campsite on the lake.
[0:36:34 – 0:36:36] Erik: We’ll see if four gives it a run for its money.
[0:36:37 – 0:36:41] Erik: So you’ve got the island aspect, which is always that mystical feeling.
[0:36:41 – 0:36:42] Erik: You know, there’s that little…
[0:36:43 – 0:36:46] Adam: The island just amplifies all the scores by a little bit.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:47] Erik: Right, exactly.
[0:36:48 – 0:36:50] Erik: And so right off the bat, this is like…
[0:36:50 – 0:36:52] Erik: It looks like somebody was…
[0:36:53 – 0:37:18] Erik: setting up a basketball court is so smooth and flat this landing is just like i mean if it was sand beach would be the only way it could be better but this is a landing uh for the gods solid a plus landing in my opinion uh it’s huge lots of room for activities so many activities just don’t i mean i could set up badminton out here and play bocce ball at the same time yep
[0:37:19 – 0:37:20] Erik: Hopscotch, maybe?
[0:37:21 – 0:37:22] Erik: Well, you’d have to bring chalk.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:23] Erik: Don’t do that.
[0:37:23 – 0:37:25] Erik: Don’t do that.
[0:37:25 – 0:37:29] Erik: There’s a really sweet, like, mini sentinel pine kind of greeting you.
[0:37:29 – 0:37:30] Erik: Big white pine.
[0:37:31 – 0:37:32] Erik: Love that.
[0:37:33 – 0:37:35] Adam: And it’s Apprentice, the Apprentice Pine.
[0:37:36 – 0:37:38] Erik: Yes, actually the one that will take over.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:48] Erik: So, yeah, solid landing, huge, just open to the sky for laying on your back under the stars or under the sun.
[0:37:48 – 0:37:50] Adam: You could do some nice tanning here.
[0:37:50 – 0:37:54] Erik: Oh, yeah, bring out your banana boat oil, get sizzling.
[0:37:54 – 0:37:56] Erik: So let’s go check out the fire grate.
[0:37:56 – 0:38:00] Erik: It’s going to be a little bit of a walk because this campsite is just so massive.
[0:38:03 – 0:38:06] Erik: Some potential splitting logs.
[0:38:08 – 0:38:12] Erik: Two huge logs that are sitting upright for like,
[0:38:13 – 0:38:41] Adam: milling somebody’s clearly been like in here like milling and splitting wood that’s impressive yeah it’s decently wood gnomed here uh i think these are more intended to be seats but i i don’t know see some little hatchet marks on there maybe yeah somebody’s using it to split i like this nice flat square rock here that got the wood set up on yeah nicely done yeah yeah i can see unlimited tent spots it looks like
[0:38:42 – 0:38:46] Adam: Basically, multiple hammock arrays, good seating.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Adam: Ah, it’s an old school wide.
[0:38:49 – 0:38:50] Erik: Ooh, it is the wide grate.
[0:38:51 – 0:38:52] Adam: This bumps it up even farther.
[0:38:52 – 0:38:54] Adam: This is another amplification of its score.
[0:38:55 – 0:38:57] Adam: Call me old-fashioned, but I like the old grates, Eric.
[0:38:58 – 0:39:02] Erik: Wow, I thought you were a fan of the narrow grates for individually placing ling-lings or pizza biters.
[0:39:02 – 0:39:06] Adam: You know, they have that advantage, but I always have the cast iron with me anyways.
[0:39:07 – 0:39:09] Adam: These things just breathe better.
[0:39:09 – 0:39:11] Adam: I like how you can feed sticks in from the top on these.
[0:39:12 – 0:39:22] Adam: And it’s just something about, you know, I worship the old gods, and I also like the old Smith Foundry U.S. Forest Service edition fire grates.
[0:39:22 – 0:39:24] Erik: You’re Smith Foundry, not Nina?
[0:39:24 – 0:39:27] Adam: Yeah, you know, even though I’m from Wisconsin, I prefer the Smith Foundry.
[0:39:28 – 0:39:28] Erik: Nice.
[0:39:28 – 0:39:31] Erik: Yeah, I’ve never really noticed before, but it’s three different gauges.
[0:39:31 – 0:39:38] Erik: There’s wide on the outside, then like an in-between gauge, and then like, yeah, depending on what you need.
[0:39:38 – 0:39:39] Erik: Yeah, what you need.
[0:39:40 – 0:39:47] Adam: If you’ve got a big enough pizza biter, you could work it on the inside, or you just have to precariously balance them on the T-joints.
[0:39:47 – 0:39:49] Erik: Yeah.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:51] Erik: Or you could just bring out a Hot Pocket.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:53] Adam: Yeah, absolutely.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:55] Adam: A big old burrito.
[0:39:56 – 0:39:57] Erik: Pizza burrito.
[0:39:59 – 0:40:03] Erik: Yeah, unlimited tent pads, basically unlimited hammocking.
[0:40:04 – 0:40:04] Erik: What?
[0:40:06 – 0:40:07] Adam: We’ve discovered a nest.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:11] Erik: We’ve discovered a random robin’s egg within the fire grate.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:14] Erik: Refer to the YouTube video for proof.
[0:40:14 – 0:40:17] Adam: That’s probably not going to make it, I don’t think.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:19] Adam: We’re going to have to stop for lunch now.
[0:40:19 – 0:40:21] Adam: We’re going to have a little omelet.
[0:40:21 – 0:40:22] Erik: A little omelet.
[0:40:22 – 0:40:24] Adam: Just a little tiny omelet.
[0:40:25 – 0:40:25] Adam: Two chives.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:26] Adam: Two chives.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:28] Erik: You brought the fresh dill, right?
[0:40:28 – 0:40:29] Adam: I always have fresh dill.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:30] Adam: That’s what this pocket’s for.
[0:40:30 – 0:40:31] Adam: Nice.
[0:40:31 – 0:40:35] Erik: Yeah, so I think Stolquist dill den.
[0:40:35 – 0:40:36] Erik: Dill den.
[0:40:36 – 0:40:36] Erik: Wow.
[0:40:39 – 0:40:40] Erik: Hashtag Dilden.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:42] Adam: That’s how you do the hashtags.
[0:40:42 – 0:40:43] Erik: You did the hashtag wrong.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:45] Adam: That was the dirty hashtag.
[0:40:45 – 0:40:45] Erik: I don’t like that.
[0:40:45 – 0:40:46] Erik: That was dirty.
[0:40:47 – 0:40:54] Erik: Yeah, so I think the only thing that you could maybe say is, and I remember I’ve camped here, is it seems it’s very popular.
[0:40:55 – 0:40:56] Erik: Wood can be a challenge.
[0:40:57 – 0:41:01] Erik: So maybe plan your wood goblining in advance and stop on the mainland.
[0:41:02 – 0:41:03] Adam: Yeah, before you come on out.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:11] Erik: Yeah, because it’s an island and it is small and there’s a finite amount of wood and there’s really not that much on this island.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:14] Adam: Plenty of eggs, but not a lot of firewood.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:14] Adam: It’s a little picked over.
[0:41:15 – 0:41:17] Erik: No sources of heat to cook the egg.
[0:41:18 – 0:41:22] Erik: But yeah, I’m going another solid A campsite out here.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:26] Erik: This island is a real true beauty of Tuscarora.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:32] Erik: And the lake should be happy that it has this beautiful island, whether it had a campsite on it or not.
[0:41:33 – 0:41:37] Erik: You can tell this is just one that’s been used over the eons.
[0:41:39 – 0:41:40] Erik: What’s your grade?
[0:41:41 – 0:41:42] Adam: It’s a solid A.
[0:41:42 – 0:41:45] Adam: Solid A. Yeah, this is right up there with five and six.
[0:41:45 – 0:41:48] Adam: They go together like robin eggs and chives.
[0:41:48 – 0:41:49] Erik: Yeah.
[0:41:49 – 0:41:51] Erik: Well, six was kind of junky, but five.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:52] Adam: Four and five.
[0:41:52 – 0:41:52] Adam: Yes.
[0:41:52 – 0:41:53] Adam: Four and five go together.
[0:41:53 – 0:41:55] Erik: Four and five are very nice.
[0:41:56 – 0:41:57] Erik: I think we’re going to…
[0:41:57 – 0:41:59] Adam: These are the two best ones so far, back to back now.
[0:41:59 – 0:42:00] Erik: Yep.
[0:42:00 – 0:42:05] Erik: And we’re going to head over to the far west side of the lake, which will be campsite one.
[0:42:05 – 0:42:10] Erik: for a campsite review and also a little bit of a snack, lunch.
[0:42:10 – 0:42:12] Erik: Hopefully we can get out of the wind a little bit, get some sun going.
[0:42:13 – 0:42:14] Erik: That will be the halfway point.
[0:42:15 – 0:42:21] Erik: I am confident that we are going to find most of these campsites to be above board.
[0:42:21 – 0:42:22] Erik: I would think so.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:25] Erik: So catch you at 1.
[0:42:25 – 0:42:25] UNKNOWN: 1.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:48] Erik: Campsite number one on the far western shores of the mighty Tuscarora Lake.
[0:42:50 – 0:42:52] Erik: It’s beautiful now that we’re out of the wind.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:54] Adam: It sure makes a difference.
[0:42:54 – 0:43:00] Adam: There’s about a 35-degree difference between being in the sun and calm versus in the shade and wind today.
[0:43:00 – 0:43:00] Erik: Yep.
[0:43:01 – 0:43:04] Adam: They always tell you, you know, you hear it, but you don’t know until you’re out here.
[0:43:04 – 0:43:05] Adam: But it’s true.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:08] Adam: Tuscarora, it means air-conditioned lake.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:08] SPEAKER_01: Yes.
[0:43:09 – 0:43:10] Adam: It’s the air-conditioned lake.
[0:43:10 – 0:43:12] Erik: That’s an Iroquois term, I believe.
[0:43:12 – 0:43:12] Erik: It is, yeah.
[0:43:12 – 0:43:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:15] Adam: Five types of lakes.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:15] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:43:16 – 0:43:20] Erik: We’ll be covering the other four types next week.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:23] Erik: But for now, campsite number one.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:26] Adam: You can see the reef out there now.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:27] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:43:27 – 0:43:28] Erik: There is a nice big reef out there.
[0:43:28 – 0:43:29] Adam: Just like this?
[0:43:30 – 0:43:30] Erik: Yeah.
[0:43:31 – 0:43:32] Erik: Like that.
[0:43:32 – 0:43:33] Erik: Just like that.
[0:43:33 – 0:43:34] Erik: Right there.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:39] Erik: Yeah, so whenever I paddle Tuscarora, we were talking like we always kind of just move right through it.
[0:43:39 – 0:43:41] Erik: We don’t really camp at it that much.
[0:43:42 – 0:43:42] Erik: But…
[0:43:44 – 0:43:49] Erik: It seems like I’ve never really stopped at this end of the lake and looked back to the east.
[0:43:49 – 0:43:52] Erik: There are some nice, nice big hills after the east.
[0:43:52 – 0:43:54] Erik: There’s like a wall of rock.
[0:43:54 – 0:43:57] Adam: Imagine in a couple weeks how nice and green that hillside is going to look.
[0:43:58 – 0:43:59] Erik: Yeah.
[0:43:59 – 0:44:00] Erik: I hope it gets green.
[0:44:00 – 0:44:01] Erik: I hope it rains.
[0:44:01 – 0:44:03] Adam: It’s girly, dry, and dusty.
[0:44:04 – 0:44:04] Erik: So the landing.
[0:44:05 – 0:44:05] Adam: Dusty stuff.
[0:44:05 – 0:44:06] Adam: Dusty stuff.
[0:44:06 – 0:44:10] Erik: The landing is a little tough.
[0:44:11 – 0:44:12] Erik: It’s here, but it’s…
[0:44:12 – 0:44:13] Adam: So there’s one fine spot.
[0:44:13 – 0:44:16] Erik: One fine spot, but it’s very steep, like, right away.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:17] Adam: Steeper than Prime.
[0:44:17 – 0:44:20] Erik: Yeah, so this isn’t Grandpa’s last trip.
[0:44:20 – 0:44:22] Erik: I wouldn’t recommend this campsite.
[0:44:23 – 0:44:23] Erik: Um…
[0:44:24 – 0:44:35] Erik: We haven’t gone up to the site itself, but this massive slab of rock that you can see from space and a mile away, whenever you’re coming across the lake, this one always jumps out.
[0:44:35 – 0:44:37] Erik: Never actually been up in the site.
[0:44:37 – 0:44:38] Erik: I’ve always kind of seen it.
[0:44:39 – 0:44:40] Erik: So, yeah, I don’t know.
[0:44:41 – 0:44:43] Erik: It’s a fine landing, C+, whatever.
[0:44:44 – 0:44:45] Erik: It’s okay.
[0:44:45 – 0:44:47] Erik: It’s mostly the getting up and out.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:52] Adam: I think you could fish the heck out of this one, though, and you could swim off this.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:53] Adam: I don’t really care.
[0:44:53 – 0:44:56] Adam: The landing’s serviceable, but the shoreline itself is tempting.
[0:44:57 – 0:44:57] Erik: Right.
[0:44:57 – 0:45:04] Erik: The storage of canoes for overnight, you might have to portage them up into camp a little ways.
[0:45:04 – 0:45:06] Erik: Just throw them in these junipers.
[0:45:06 – 0:45:09] Erik: Yeah, those very healthy-looking junipers.
[0:45:09 – 0:45:14] Erik: Oh, my God, they’re just crispy tumbleweeds.
[0:45:14 – 0:45:19] Erik: So, yeah, let’s take a walk up into the site and see if the…
[0:45:20 – 0:45:43] Erik: campfire grade area can uh there is just some loose random wood on the rocks one looks like it was an attempted burn there’s a huge one in that bush over there what the heck oh yeah this is oh i haven’t lost my stringers hey we have to fish now
[0:45:46 – 0:45:46] Erik: See?
[0:45:46 – 0:45:47] Erik: Found a stringer.
[0:45:47 – 0:45:48] Erik: Everything you need.
[0:45:48 – 0:45:50] Adam: Everything you need is provided by the park, see?
[0:45:50 – 0:45:52] Adam: There’s a chipmunk.
[0:45:52 – 0:45:54] Erik: This is kind of weird.
[0:45:54 – 0:45:58] Erik: I think it’s mostly the debris that’s got me feeling a little odd.
[0:45:58 – 0:46:01] Adam: Looks like something happened here.
[0:46:01 – 0:46:03] Erik: Somebody was maybe here in the winter?
[0:46:03 – 0:46:04] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:46:05 – 0:46:06] Erik: It just seems kind of…
[0:46:08 – 0:46:10] Erik: Yeah, it’s wood hogged in a bad way.
[0:46:11 – 0:46:18] Erik: And the fire grate’s all crooked and bent, and there’s a hole in one of the… Yeah, this thing got monkey wrenched.
[0:46:19 – 0:46:19] Erik: Boy, oh boy.
[0:46:20 – 0:46:22] Adam: This doesn’t count as wood gnoming if you don’t stack it nice.
[0:46:22 – 0:46:24] Erik: No, if it’s just a pile of brush.
[0:46:25 – 0:46:26] Erik: This is more like a wood gremlin-ing.
[0:46:27 – 0:46:29] Erik: This might be one of the worst fire grates I’ve ever seen.
[0:46:29 – 0:46:32] Adam: Yeah, this isn’t good in so many ways.
[0:46:32 – 0:46:33] Erik: It’s angled like really weird.
[0:46:34 – 0:46:35] Erik: Ooh, it’s loose.
[0:46:35 – 0:46:38] Adam: There’s a tin of Kodiak down here.
[0:46:38 – 0:46:49] Adam: So this is the complete opposite of the last fire grate we reviewed over on site four, which had a beautiful grate and a Robin’s egg.
[0:46:49 – 0:46:59] Adam: This one is derelict to a high degree and is littered with Kodiak, but we did get a pretty cool old school stringer out of the deal.
[0:46:59 – 0:46:59] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:03] Adam: So the fire grate, you can barely call it one.
[0:47:04 – 0:47:06] Adam: It’s pretty much a D. Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:47:06 – 0:47:08] Adam: On the fire grate, but the view you’re sitting at.
[0:47:08 – 0:47:09] Adam: The fire grate itself.
[0:47:09 – 0:47:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:11] Adam: The grate itself is not great.
[0:47:11 – 0:47:16] Erik: But it’s getting aided very much so by the nice views to the east.
[0:47:17 – 0:47:19] Adam: Yeah, you don’t need it.
[0:47:19 – 0:47:20] Adam: You could still cook on it.
[0:47:20 – 0:47:22] Erik: Yeah, right.
[0:47:22 – 0:47:23] Adam: But I’ve never seen one this wiggly.
[0:47:23 – 0:47:26] Erik: That’s very wiggly, cracked in multiple places.
[0:47:26 – 0:47:27] Erik: Yeah, I wouldn’t feel comfortable.
[0:47:27 – 0:47:28] Adam: This is what you get with a Neenah product.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:32] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:47:33 – 0:47:34] Erik: Have you seen their sewer caps, though?
[0:47:34 – 0:47:35] Erik: I mean…
[0:47:35 – 0:47:38] Erik: Yeah, their manhole covers are sublime.
[0:47:39 – 0:47:41] Erik: The pile of wood out here is substantial, though.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:45] Erik: If you’re going to be out here in the next couple of weeks, there’s wood at Campsite 1.
[0:47:45 – 0:47:46] Erik: Let it be known.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:47] SPEAKER_01: We’re not stacking it.
[0:47:47 – 0:47:50] Erik: No, we’re not going to do any work on cleaning up the wood.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:52] Erik: We have been picking up litter along the way.
[0:47:52 – 0:47:54] Erik: There has been a lot of micro litter.
[0:47:54 – 0:47:55] Adam: A lot of this one.
[0:47:55 – 0:48:00] Adam: This one’s got covered in scraps of old aluminum foil and chaw cans.
[0:48:00 – 0:48:00] Adam: Yep.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:02] Erik: Chalk hands.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:04] Erik: I see a nice hammock tree or two.
[0:48:04 – 0:48:05] Erik: Yeah.
[0:48:05 – 0:48:08] Erik: So it would finish up on the fire grade here.
[0:48:08 – 0:48:08] Erik: C?
[0:48:08 – 0:48:09] Erik: C, yeah.
[0:48:09 – 0:48:12] Erik: Only because of the nice views and relatively…
[0:48:12 – 0:48:13] Adam: It would be worse if it didn’t have the view.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:48:15 – 0:48:16] Adam: There it is, chippy again.
[0:48:17 – 0:48:19] Adam: There’s a chipmunk, so that’s also an amplifier.
[0:48:19 – 0:48:22] Erik: Resident chipmunk.
[0:48:22 – 0:48:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:25] Erik: I don’t see any clear tent pads yet.
[0:48:25 – 0:48:27] Erik: It’s pretty…
[0:48:27 – 0:48:29] Adam: This is going to be one of them climbing.
[0:48:32 – 0:48:38] Erik: Geez, yeah, it is a massive hill here, but I don’t see anything flat, really, for camping.
[0:48:40 – 0:48:43] Erik: I think that’s just what the dirt does in the spring after the ice melts out of it.
[0:48:44 – 0:48:45] Adam: Mini glaciers?
[0:48:45 – 0:48:48] Adam: Yeah, mini glaciers.
[0:48:48 – 0:48:52] Erik: I don’t know what we’re going to find up here, but geez.
[0:48:53 – 0:48:56] Erik: It’s quite the sprawling rock here.
[0:48:57 – 0:48:59] Erik: There’s a grassy field.
[0:49:00 – 0:49:01] Erik: Maybe a tent pad there.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:02] Erik: That’s a tent pad.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:07 – 0:49:08] Erik: Maybe one right there.
[0:49:09 – 0:49:09] Erik: Weird.
[0:49:10 – 0:49:11] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:15] Erik: It’s a huge site, but nothing’s flat.
[0:49:19 – 0:49:19] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:20 – 0:49:21] Erik: I don’t know what to say about this.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:23] Erik: Seems like a nice lunch spot.
[0:49:25 – 0:49:26] Erik: which is exactly what we’re going to do with it.
[0:49:26 – 0:49:27] Adam: Shore luncheon.
[0:49:28 – 0:49:36] Erik: Um, but yeah, this would be a cool spot to just like, if you knew it was going to be really nice, just bring the thermo rest and just throw it in the grass here.
[0:49:36 – 0:49:37] Adam: Yeah, it would work.
[0:49:37 – 0:49:39] Erik: Yeah.
[0:49:39 – 0:49:43] Erik: And mega views for stars straight up above.
[0:49:44 – 0:49:47] Erik: You could very easily get star burned out here at night.
[0:49:47 – 0:49:47] Erik: Um,
[0:49:49 – 0:49:52] Erik: But I would say, I don’t know, this is a tough one to grade.
[0:49:53 – 0:49:54] Erik: It’s just a weird one.
[0:49:54 – 0:50:01] Erik: Nothing really comfy feeling about it, but it’s also kind of cool and just… Yeah, give it a solid B. Yeah.
[0:50:01 – 0:50:08] Adam: Nothing about it gets a B, but overall it’s somehow like the sum of all the C pluses adds up to a standard B. Yeah, that’s kind of…
[0:50:09 – 0:50:09] Adam: Somehow that works.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:10] Adam: It doesn’t, but it does.
[0:50:10 – 0:50:17] Erik: Yeah, the math doesn’t work out, but I’m feeling the same way where there’s nothing about it grade-wise, but there’s just a feeling that’s just like, eh.
[0:50:17 – 0:50:20] Adam: You’re on a prominent rock structure on a magnificent lake.
[0:50:20 – 0:50:22] Adam: With like huge, yeah.
[0:50:22 – 0:50:26] Erik: Massive views all around and you can just keep climbing farther and farther up.
[0:50:26 – 0:50:32] Erik: But the lack of tent pads and maybe even the lack of like, there was only one or two maybe solid looking hammock spots.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:46] Adam: I would note, too, that two of the best-looking fishing reefs that I saw from my initial research and looking at the maps is this little rock with the snuggly seagull out there.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:49] Adam: I would think you could fish and troll around that.
[0:50:49 – 0:50:53] Adam: And then there’s another complementary reef that’s just submerged.
[0:50:53 – 0:51:05] Adam: off to the right side here that you can see from the fire grade area with the polarizers you can definitely see yeah and i would think you know you know generally you’re gonna have a west wind so you’re gonna be out of the wind over here and makes fishing a little bit more manageable
[0:51:05 – 0:51:09] Erik: Oh, it felt like the gales of November blown in on that island campsite.
[0:51:09 – 0:51:12] Erik: Now it’s like feeling like we’re in summer over here.
[0:51:12 – 0:51:15] Adam: Well, like when I was looking at the maps, I circled those two reefs.
[0:51:15 – 0:51:17] Adam: I said those would be the ones I think I’d start with.
[0:51:18 – 0:51:26] Adam: So maybe after lunch we should take a little trolling run or at least do some casting near those two sites because it looks like it’s deep water right off of those two.
[0:51:26 – 0:51:28] Adam: So you would think that would hold them.
[0:51:28 – 0:51:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:51:30 – 0:51:31] Adam: Yeah, I give it a solid B.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:32] Adam: Solid B.
[0:51:32 – 0:51:37] Adam: We don’t know why, but it’s a solid B. I think we explained it well enough, but it doesn’t make sense.
[0:51:37 – 0:51:38] Erik: No, it doesn’t.
[0:51:38 – 0:51:40] Erik: All right, well, we’re going to have lunch.
[0:51:40 – 0:51:43] Erik: It’s a nonsensical B. Nonsensical B. I need some cheese.
[0:51:43 – 0:51:46] Erik: I need some cheese and some meat and some more wine.
[0:51:57 – 0:51:57] Erik: Oh, hi there.
[0:51:58 – 0:52:03] Erik: Hello and welcome to campsite number two.
[0:52:03 – 0:52:06] Erik: A real connoisseur’s site.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:12] Erik: Do we need to amend campsite one based on the events that occurred in between one and two?
[0:52:12 – 0:52:12] Erik: Absolutely.
[0:52:12 – 0:52:15] Adam: Before we get to this site, let’s go back to campsite number one.
[0:52:16 – 0:52:21] Adam: If you remember, we pointed out at a reef you could see and said, that’s the spot I want to fish first.
[0:52:22 – 0:52:26] Adam: So we rigged up everything before we left camp after our lovely lunch.
[0:52:27 – 0:52:33] Adam: And we went out and literally in like the fourth cast, I hooked into a really nice lake trout out there on a spoon.
[0:52:34 – 0:52:38] Adam: And yeah, we just cleaned it.
[0:52:38 – 0:52:38] Adam: So we kept it.
[0:52:40 – 0:52:43] Adam: It’s a perfect feeder size, 22 inches, give or take.
[0:52:44 – 0:52:47] Adam: And so we put it on that stringer we found also.
[0:52:47 – 0:52:51] Adam: I mean, it’s all just coming together here on Tuscarora today.
[0:52:52 – 0:52:54] Adam: And so I put the fish on the stringer.
[0:52:55 – 0:52:57] Adam: Tori netted it like an expert.
[0:52:58 – 0:52:58] Adam: Eric got video.
[0:52:59 – 0:53:09] Adam: We got over here to the, we tried fishing that seagull rock a little bit too, nothing going, but then we got over here and it’s like, well, there’s a nice flat rock at the landing.
[0:53:09 – 0:53:12] Adam: So we’re going to give the landing here a pretty decent grade.
[0:53:12 – 0:53:14] Adam: Although there’s some slippery rocks to contend with.
[0:53:15 – 0:53:16] Adam: Cleaned up the fish.
[0:53:16 – 0:53:19] Adam: So we have one nice lake trout in the bag.
[0:53:20 – 0:53:21] Adam: for dinner tonight.
[0:53:22 – 0:53:25] Adam: So, I don’t know, what was the grade on that one?
[0:53:25 – 0:53:26] Adam: We gave it like a solid B?
[0:53:26 – 0:53:33] Adam: Yeah, we gave it a mysterious B. I’m going to say it’s a B+, because there’s nothing about it that’s super great, but we had a great lunch there.
[0:53:34 – 0:53:35] Adam: It was really nice and warm.
[0:53:36 – 0:53:44] Adam: You could definitely make it work, and as we noted, there’s two really good-looking reef structures straight off of it, and one of them immediately produced.
[0:53:44 – 0:53:44] Erik: Yep.
[0:53:45 – 0:53:46] Adam: Pretty exciting, and you were correct.
[0:53:46 – 0:53:47] Erik: B+.
[0:53:47 – 0:53:47] Adam: Yes.
[0:53:48 – 0:53:48] Erik: You were correct.
[0:53:50 – 0:53:58] Erik: I was the naysayer and said no fish, and you proved me wrong with baby trout, little Cleo.
[0:53:58 – 0:54:02] Adam: Yeah, I was on the small little Cleo in the rainbow trout pattern.
[0:54:04 – 0:54:10] Adam: Somebody smart we know told us that the rainbow trout pattern of little Cleo was the best one.
[0:54:11 – 0:54:15] Adam: And I happened to find one that next night, and so I’ve had it tied on, and it was ready to go.
[0:54:15 – 0:54:17] Adam: We learned that from the Beaver House, sponsor of the show.
[0:54:18 – 0:54:19] Adam: Yeah, our good friend Tyson.
[0:54:20 – 0:54:20] Adam: He’s smart.
[0:54:20 – 0:54:22] Adam: He knows about the little Cleo.
[0:54:22 – 0:54:23] Adam: He said it’s the best lure ever made.
[0:54:23 – 0:54:26] Adam: My grandfather, Walter, would definitely agree.
[0:54:26 – 0:54:30] Adam: It’s the lure I learned to cast with, and I still love it to this day.
[0:54:30 – 0:54:36] Erik: And that’s the Beaver House at the corner of Broadway and Wisconsin Street in downtown Grand Marais.
[0:54:36 – 0:54:37] Erik: Just looking out at the roof.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:38] Erik: Just look for the walleye.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:44] Erik: They’ll point you in the right direction with any lure you can possibly imagine for any lake in the county.
[0:54:45 – 0:54:45] Adam: Now…
[0:54:46 – 0:54:46] Adam: So we moved it over here.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:47] Adam: We cleaned the fish.
[0:54:48 – 0:54:56] Adam: And now we’re ready to do the campsite review for site number two on Tuscarora on the northwest corner here by these lovely cliffs.
[0:54:56 – 0:54:57] Adam: Striped cliffs.
[0:54:58 – 0:54:59] Erik: Very nice cliffs.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:03] Adam: And it’s a pretty tranquil little bay in here.
[0:55:03 – 0:55:04] Adam: The landing, as you can see…
[0:55:05 – 0:55:10] Adam: If you’re on the video feed, you’d see it’s kind of a steep rock where the boat is parked.
[0:55:10 – 0:55:16] Adam: It’s a nice shallower pitch, but the part right in front of the fire grate here is kind of steep and
[0:55:17 – 0:55:19] Adam: There’s some sort of seepage going there on the steepage.
[0:55:20 – 0:55:25] Erik: There’s some steep seepage that causes a little bit of a precarious climb up in here.
[0:55:26 – 0:55:29] Erik: If you got the muck boots on, we found that they were pretty slippery on there.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:30] Adam: Yeah, it was definitely slick.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:32] Adam: You had to kind of go up through the juniper there.
[0:55:32 – 0:55:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:55:33 – 0:55:38] Adam: We made it up to this beautiful, wide, great, old-style Smith Foundry.
[0:55:39 – 0:55:40] Erik: Hashtag Smith Foundry.
[0:55:41 – 0:55:42] Erik: Check us out, Smith.
[0:55:42 – 0:55:43] SPEAKER_01: Hashtag Smith Foundry.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:45] Erik: That’s not how you do it.
[0:55:46 – 0:55:47] Erik: Again, like, this is…
[0:55:47 – 0:55:49] Adam: This is like wood gnomed with… What is this?
[0:55:49 – 0:55:50] Adam: Ash or birch?
[0:55:51 – 0:55:51] Erik: It’s some…
[0:55:51 – 0:55:52] Adam: It’s like a nice hardwood.
[0:55:53 – 0:55:55] Erik: Yeah, it looks like some aspen, actually.
[0:55:55 – 0:55:56] Erik: No, that’s not good.
[0:55:56 – 0:55:56] Erik: Not great, but…
[0:55:57 – 0:55:58] SPEAKER_01: But it’s split nice.
[0:55:58 – 0:55:59] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it’s dry.
[0:55:59 – 0:56:00] Erik: For sure dry.
[0:56:00 – 0:56:05] Adam: And that’s actually stacked in an appropriate manner, which would qualify it for a wood gnoming bonus.
[0:56:05 – 0:56:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:56:06 – 0:56:07] Adam: We have to factor that into it.
[0:56:08 – 0:56:13] Adam: I like this big main rock, too, in the middle of the two landing zones, which is kind of neat.
[0:56:13 – 0:56:14] Erik: Yeah, it’s all right.
[0:56:14 – 0:56:15] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:56:15 – 0:56:21] Adam: The view, you got the view of the cliffs, but you’re kind of pointed away from the general orientation of the lake.
[0:56:22 – 0:56:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:56:22 – 0:56:25] Adam: So not the best placement on the view either.
[0:56:25 – 0:56:27] Adam: I mean, but you can’t complain.
[0:56:27 – 0:56:28] Erik: The white cliffs of Dover.
[0:56:28 – 0:56:29] Erik: Striped cliffs.
[0:56:30 – 0:56:34] Adam: So I’d say the landing is a regular C.
[0:56:35 – 0:56:59] Adam: yeah plain old sea regular sea boring the good flat area for cleaning large lake trout although i didn’t do a very good job on the lake trout i give my i give my maybe we should grade the the cleaning of the trout i give the cleaning of the trout a regular sea as well okay it’s my first trout of the open water season and yeah i you know i i did okay there’s gonna be a lot of meat for dinner but i i left some meat on the bone
[0:57:01 – 0:57:02] Adam: Harsh but true.
[0:57:02 – 0:57:03] Erik: Harsh but true.
[0:57:03 – 0:57:06] Erik: You don’t come to Tumble Home for lies.
[0:57:06 – 0:57:08] Erik: It’s a pretty small site.
[0:57:08 – 0:57:09] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:57:09 – 0:57:10] Erik: Fire area is flat enough.
[0:57:10 – 0:57:12] Erik: It’s got some nice black dirt here.
[0:57:12 – 0:57:16] Erik: You could maybe plant some lettuces or something.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:16] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:57:17 – 0:57:21] Erik: Kind of just generally shabby.
[0:57:22 – 0:57:23] Erik: Another real shabby one.
[0:57:24 – 0:57:26] Erik: It’s not terrible, but it’s kind of small.
[0:57:27 – 0:57:30] Erik: I don’t see any tent sites really.
[0:57:30 – 0:57:31] Erik: Is that supposed to be one?
[0:57:31 – 0:57:33] Erik: I guess that might be one there behind those logs.
[0:57:34 – 0:57:34] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:57:35 – 0:57:36] Erik: Maybe.
[0:57:36 – 0:57:37] Adam: Did you go back farther?
[0:57:37 – 0:57:39] Erik: There’s nothing really back up in the site as well.
[0:57:40 – 0:57:42] Erik: Yeah, you could maybe throw a little two person right here in the grass.
[0:57:43 – 0:57:44] Erik: So, I don’t know.
[0:57:44 – 0:57:47] Erik: I’m giving this another, this is a solid D plus campsite for me.
[0:57:47 – 0:57:50] Adam: Would you rather stay here or at number six?
[0:57:51 – 0:57:52] Erik: I’d rather stay here.
[0:57:53 – 0:57:54] Erik: At least this is like on the water.
[0:57:55 – 0:57:58] Adam: Yeah, you’re actually on a big part of the lake here, I guess, so that’s nice.
[0:57:58 – 0:58:03] Erik: Yeah, those back bay sites where you can’t even… And then you can’t even really see the water all that much.
[0:58:03 – 0:58:04] Erik: You’re kind of up in the woods.
[0:58:05 – 0:58:07] Erik: This is way better than 6.
[0:58:07 – 0:58:10] Erik: 6 is by far the worst one so far, although they do share the same grade.
[0:58:10 – 0:58:11] Erik: D++.
[0:58:11 – 0:58:11] Erik: D++.
[0:58:11 – 0:58:14] Erik: All right.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:16] Erik: We’re going to…
[0:58:17 – 0:58:17] Erik: That’s all right.
[0:58:17 – 0:58:26] Erik: We’re going to go to campsite three at this point, which is another potential skunk because it’s one of those ones that’s like way up in the back corner.
[0:58:26 – 0:58:29] Adam: It’s up out of the way, but I think one of them has to pay off.
[0:58:29 – 0:58:31] Adam: So I’m going to say this one’s going to be good.
[0:58:31 – 0:58:32] Erik: You think three is going to be good?
[0:58:32 – 0:58:33] Erik: I’m excited for three.
[0:58:33 – 0:58:34] Erik: You’re doubling down?
[0:58:34 – 0:58:34] Erik: Yeah.
[0:58:34 – 0:58:34] Erik: Okay.
[0:58:34 – 0:58:36] Adam: I think three is going to be great.
[0:58:36 – 0:58:41] Erik: Well, we’re coming back with campsite three and potentially an interview with the bald eagle.
[0:58:50 – 0:58:52] Erik: All right, we found campsite three.
[0:58:52 – 0:58:52] Erik: It took us a little bit.
[0:58:52 – 0:58:58] Adam: If you hear three hoots, you know Eric’s found the fire grate.
[0:58:59 – 0:59:06] Adam: So we used a false landing on this one, but there’s a true landing down here, which isn’t so bad.
[0:59:07 – 0:59:12] Erik: Yeah, I mean, it’s not the worst campsite I’ve ever seen, but it’s the worst site I’ve seen on Tuscarora.
[0:59:12 – 0:59:39] Erik: absolutely this is the worst one for sure um yeah so there’s like a little sand beach kind of off to the side of where we thought the site was and i was just like well it kind of looks like a little path i’ll walk up there and see and then sure enough i saw the fire grate just like up on this little mound in the woods is let’s start at the fire grate because it’s charming yeah it looks rusty like there hasn’t been a fire under it in four or five years but charming’s one word for it
[0:59:39 – 1:00:06] Adam: you know it’s a nice it’s in good shape and it’s charming so probably the best thing about the site but i would never come here with more than two people you know i mean i wouldn’t come back here ever probably i’m honestly shocked the latrine isn’t like right next to the fire pit for some reason oh yeah the latrine path is underwater currently and the tent pad is like a half tent pad you could get a little two-person tent in there no problem
[1:00:07 – 1:00:12] Erik: I mean, yeah, maybe Dan Stevens could curl up in a log or something in this spot.
[1:00:13 – 1:00:16] Erik: The fire-grade area is like, I don’t even know, why is it here?
[1:00:16 – 1:00:17] Erik: Why is there a site here?
[1:00:18 – 1:00:21] Adam: They needed one up here in that sweet bay we just explored.
[1:00:21 – 1:00:21] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:21 – 1:00:22] Adam: Where the inlet comes in.
[1:00:23 – 1:00:26] Erik: Yeah, there’s no room in this fire-grade area for anything.
[1:00:26 – 1:00:30] Erik: It’s up on top of a knob, a hilly knob, with nothing around it.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:33] Erik: Yeah, it’s, I would say…
[1:00:35 – 1:00:37] Erik: The landing’s like the only thing that it’s got going for it.
[1:00:37 – 1:00:38] Adam: Let’s go check out the landing.
[1:00:39 – 1:00:41] Adam: We actually started up here because we came at it wrong.
[1:00:42 – 1:00:43] Erik: Well, we did come at it wrong.
[1:00:43 – 1:00:45] Erik: So it’s a little off on the map.
[1:00:45 – 1:00:50] Erik: It’s actually a little bit farther east than where it is labeled.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:53] Erik: And this landing’s not terrible.
[1:00:53 – 1:00:54] Adam: This landing’s fine.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:56] Adam: Now, you know, the only problem is our boat isn’t here.
[1:00:57 – 1:00:58] Erik: Our boat is not here.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:00] Adam: Well, you know, but we’ll get it later.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:03] Erik: Yeah, landing’s a…
[1:01:03 – 1:01:06] Adam: So you were right, three was not a gem.
[1:01:06 – 1:01:06] Erik: No.
[1:01:07 – 1:01:08] Adam: This is a disappointing spot.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:10] Adam: We paddled literally right by it going in.
[1:01:11 – 1:01:18] Adam: We went in up to this little super bay up into the northwest looking for some sort of action.
[1:01:19 – 1:01:20] Adam: No action.
[1:01:20 – 1:01:22] Adam: What we found was more valuable.
[1:01:22 – 1:01:23] Adam: It was friendship.
[1:01:23 – 1:01:25] Erik: Yeah, that’s what we’re still working on.
[1:01:27 – 1:01:28] Erik: This is a D landing.
[1:01:29 – 1:01:33] Erik: Fire grade’s an F, and I’m giving the campsite an overall grade of an F.
[1:01:34 – 1:01:35] Erik: I’m failing it.
[1:01:35 – 1:01:36] Erik: First failure.
[1:01:36 – 1:01:38] Adam: No, it’s not that bad.
[1:01:39 – 1:01:40] Adam: It’s not the James Bay.
[1:01:40 – 1:01:40] Adam: All right.
[1:01:41 – 1:01:41] Adam: It’s a straight up.
[1:01:42 – 1:01:43] Adam: It’s a strong F. Yeah.
[1:01:44 – 1:01:47] Erik: We never really, I don’t get any pleasure out of failing campsites.
[1:01:47 – 1:01:51] Erik: I want to see nice sights, but it is actually kind of fun to see the bad ones.
[1:01:51 – 1:01:51] Adam: It is kind of fun.
[1:01:51 – 1:01:55] Adam: What about all the plethora of dead standing birch surrounding?
[1:01:55 – 1:01:58] Erik: Yeah, the forest behind the site’s also not great.
[1:01:58 – 1:01:59] Erik: There’s not really good.
[1:01:59 – 1:02:00] Adam: This jack pine’s okay.
[1:02:01 – 1:02:02] Erik: Yeah, it’s all right.
[1:02:03 – 1:02:04] Erik: Now we’re just grasping at straws.
[1:02:04 – 1:02:05] Erik: Let’s get out of here.
[1:02:05 – 1:02:05] Erik: Let’s get out of here.
[1:02:05 – 1:02:07] Erik: Campsite three is a real bust.
[1:02:07 – 1:02:08] Erik: Don’t come up here.
[1:02:08 – 1:02:08] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[1:02:23 – 1:02:29] Erik: Well, Tuscarora, you’ve shown us the worst you have had to offer.
[1:02:30 – 1:02:40] Erik: And you immediately redeem yourself with, I would say, one of the nicest sights in the general area.
[1:02:40 – 1:02:44] Erik: If not, well, for sure the nicest sight on the lake, if you ask me.
[1:02:46 – 1:02:47] Erik: Yes.
[1:02:47 – 1:02:50] Erik: But, like, I can’t think of a better one in the immediate vicinity.
[1:02:51 – 1:02:52] Erik: This is primo.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:53] Erik: We’ll get into it.
[1:02:53 – 1:02:56] Erik: But we should say this is campsite seven.
[1:02:57 – 1:03:00] Erik: And we just got overflown.
[1:03:00 – 1:03:06] Erik: It’s not a trip into the Boundary Waters unless you get overflown by a god damn henny cub beaver.
[1:03:06 – 1:03:08] Adam: I think it was a de Havilland beaver.
[1:03:08 – 1:03:09] Adam: Yeah.
[1:03:09 – 1:03:10] Adam: Did we get buzzed?
[1:03:10 – 1:03:11] Erik: They didn’t just fly over.
[1:03:11 – 1:03:13] Adam: Not even a single flyover.
[1:03:13 – 1:03:16] Adam: They had to loop around and watch us for five minutes.
[1:03:16 – 1:03:17] Adam: Yeah, we got circled.
[1:03:18 – 1:03:19] Adam: Ugh, you idiots.
[1:03:20 – 1:03:22] Adam: You never saw this three years ago.
[1:03:22 – 1:03:30] Adam: Like, when did this become commonplace that they just have daily flights of morons just flying around, ruining a very nice campsite?
[1:03:30 – 1:03:34] Erik: Yeah, they run the same route, like, every day.
[1:03:35 – 1:03:42] Erik: From east to west, from Ely to who knows where, to go get poutine at Bucky’s Poutine Shack in Thunder Bay or whatever.
[1:03:44 – 1:03:46] Erik: And we’re here on the greatest side on the lake, too.
[1:03:46 – 1:03:47] Erik: It just sucks.
[1:03:47 – 1:03:52] Adam: Literally, as soon as we took a foot out of the boat, you could hear the dumb rumble of the plane coming over.
[1:03:53 – 1:03:54] Adam: I’m not even kidding.
[1:03:54 – 1:03:56] Adam: That’s like 14 straight trips, Eric.
[1:03:56 – 1:03:57] Erik: Yeah, it is.
[1:03:57 – 1:03:58] Adam: What’s going on out here?
[1:03:59 – 1:04:00] Erik: All right.
[1:04:00 – 1:04:01] Adam: The park’s not even open.
[1:04:02 – 1:04:04] Erik: Well, it’s open for day use, but I don’t know what.
[1:04:04 – 1:04:06] Erik: They don’t even care that the Boundary Waters is here.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:10] Erik: It just seems like a commute, a daily commute.
[1:04:11 – 1:04:11] Erik: Campsite 7.
[1:04:13 – 1:04:14] Erik: It’s a thing of beauty.
[1:04:16 – 1:04:16] Erik: Landing.
[1:04:17 – 1:04:19] Erik: Pan over to that landing.
[1:04:19 – 1:04:19] Adam: A plus beach landing.
[1:04:20 – 1:04:21] Adam: Boom operator.
[1:04:21 – 1:04:24] Adam: It’s the big beach.
[1:04:24 – 1:04:26] Adam: It’s a big ass beach.
[1:04:26 – 1:04:30] Adam: And then you got some really nice smooth rocks down there to the west.
[1:04:31 – 1:04:32] Adam: Oh, flat pancakes over there.
[1:04:32 – 1:04:33] Erik: Those are sweet.
[1:04:35 – 1:04:36] Erik: Glorious views.
[1:04:37 – 1:04:39] Erik: Amazing sand beach.
[1:04:40 – 1:04:42] Erik: It’s an A plus landing from…
[1:04:43 – 1:04:45] Erik: Dawn till dusk.
[1:04:46 – 1:04:53] Erik: The only thing you could really say is tough fishing, but you’re not coming to this site.
[1:04:53 – 1:04:58] Erik: Yeah, go out and get in the boat and go for a paddle and go for a cast out in the lake.
[1:04:58 – 1:05:00] Erik: This is a leisure delight out here.
[1:05:00 – 1:05:02] Erik: This is a real Captain Ron site.
[1:05:04 – 1:05:11] Erik: The fire grate is like 10 feet away from the water and beautifully set up with a nice rock.
[1:05:12 – 1:05:18] Erik: Surrounding it, the only thing that I could maybe say is kind of off about the grate is it’s a little low to the ground.
[1:05:19 – 1:05:20] Erik: Just a little.
[1:05:21 – 1:05:21] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:22 – 1:05:23] Adam: You can make it work.
[1:05:24 – 1:05:24] Adam: It’s fine.
[1:05:24 – 1:05:27] Adam: You can dig it out.
[1:05:27 – 1:05:29] Adam: I love the rock placement here around the grate.
[1:05:30 – 1:05:36] Adam: Look at the way they’re laid down here, like some serious mason work here.
[1:05:37 – 1:05:39] Erik: It’s been some serious work, yes.
[1:05:39 – 1:05:43] Adam: There’s some nice, like… A lot of thought put into this, and these rocks were curated and collected.
[1:05:43 – 1:05:48] Adam: I don’t think these were all just found laying on the beach here.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:49] Erik: No, I think that they…
[1:05:49 – 1:05:51] Adam: They brought these from elsewhere, possibly over here.
[1:05:51 – 1:05:56] Erik: They seem like they kind of have that same flat pancake feel to the rocks that are just to the north of the beach site.
[1:05:57 – 1:05:59] Erik: Very well put together.
[1:06:00 – 1:06:04] Erik: Not the greatest camp furniture, but whatever.
[1:06:04 – 1:06:04] Erik: You’re on a beach.
[1:06:05 – 1:06:05] Adam: Yeah, you’re going to need it.
[1:06:06 – 1:06:11] Erik: There’s even a flagpole for flying your pirate flag that somebody has notched into a log.
[1:06:11 – 1:06:18] Adam: Apparently this is the radio antenna to let the Forest Service know when somebody has made a landing at the beach and to send in the Air Force.
[1:06:19 – 1:06:22] Adam: But it’s like spindled down into this bottom log.
[1:06:23 – 1:06:29] Adam: I mean, I generally would say it’s almost like visual pollution.
[1:06:29 – 1:06:30] Erik: Yeah, kind of.
[1:06:30 – 1:06:33] Adam: I mean, how is this any different than a bobby stick, you know?
[1:06:33 – 1:06:35] Adam: But there’s something about it.
[1:06:35 – 1:06:39] Adam: It’s artistic, and it stood the test of time.
[1:06:39 – 1:06:41] Adam: Obviously, it made it through the entire winter like this.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:42] Adam: Yeah.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:44] Erik: Who knows how long it’s been here like this?
[1:06:44 – 1:06:45] Erik: And then you have its complimentary piece.
[1:06:46 – 1:06:47] Erik: Ah, the wine table.
[1:06:48 – 1:06:55] Adam: Yeah, and we haven’t had one of these in a while, but I’ve got to just go out of my way to give special points and commendations to this wine table.
[1:06:55 – 1:06:59] Erik: Whoever made this was very thoughtful and artfully done.
[1:06:59 – 1:07:05] Erik: You definitely will need to go to the YouTube video of this to be able to see exactly what it is.
[1:07:06 – 1:07:16] Erik: It’s a carved-out stick with a very flat-topped counter that is just like a foot and a half up off the main log.
[1:07:17 – 1:07:20] Erik: I don’t know who would ever have thought to make something like that.
[1:07:20 – 1:07:21] Erik: It’s so elegant.
[1:07:22 – 1:07:26] Adam: Actually, I can’t even remember when I was all worked up ago just a few minutes ago.
[1:07:26 – 1:07:27] Adam: I’m so at ease now.
[1:07:28 – 1:07:32] Adam: Just looking at this fine table and having a sip of that beautiful rosé.
[1:07:32 – 1:07:34] Adam: The perfect temperature of rosé.
[1:07:35 – 1:07:35] Erik: It is.
[1:07:35 – 1:07:36] Erik: It could be colder at this point.
[1:07:37 – 1:07:43] Adam: So I’d say the fire pit area with the accompanying, you know, I don’t know if it’s a sculpture.
[1:07:43 – 1:07:45] Adam: I guess this is more of a functional sculpture.
[1:07:47 – 1:07:48] Erik: A plus for the fire grate area.
[1:07:48 – 1:07:48] Adam: I love it.
[1:07:48 – 1:07:50] Adam: And it sticks with the theme of this lake.
[1:07:51 – 1:07:53] Adam: The fire grates are very close to the water.
[1:07:53 – 1:07:55] Adam: Maybe it’s just me talking here.
[1:07:55 – 1:08:01] Adam: But all the fire grates have been, I would say, unusually close to the water itself.
[1:08:01 – 1:08:06] Adam: I think you can probably hear the waves lapping in here on this beautiful beach.
[1:08:06 – 1:08:09] Adam: I wish I had brought my chubbies and could go for a dip right now.
[1:08:09 – 1:08:11] Erik: It’s going to be very hard to leave this one.
[1:08:11 – 1:08:12] Erik: I don’t know why.
[1:08:13 – 1:08:21] Erik: It’s the one site that, well, there’s a couple, but this one would be the top of the list that I would target for a summer trip now, knowing that this beach exists.
[1:08:21 – 1:08:22] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:08:23 – 1:08:28] Adam: I’d say this one goes to the top easy, and then probably five.
[1:08:29 – 1:08:33] Adam: For sentimental value, and it’s kind of the counterpart to this site.
[1:08:34 – 1:08:36] Adam: It’s over there, also with the beach landing.
[1:08:37 – 1:08:45] Adam: And then right in between kind of is the nice island campsite number 5-4 on the island.
[1:08:45 – 1:08:50] Adam: So these are my favorite three so far, and this one, I think, takes the cake.
[1:08:51 – 1:08:56] Adam: The campsite is complemented by probably one of the flattest,
[1:08:57 – 1:09:00] Adam: And most pristine tent pads I’ve ever seen.
[1:09:00 – 1:09:03] Adam: It’s like, it’s basically an extension of the beach.
[1:09:04 – 1:09:05] Adam: It’s essentially sand.
[1:09:05 – 1:09:09] Adam: And it’s somehow, somehow closer to the water than the fire grate.
[1:09:09 – 1:09:10] Erik: Yes.
[1:09:10 – 1:09:10] Erik: It’s great.
[1:09:11 – 1:09:14] Erik: This is, and then back off into the woods, unlimited.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:16] Erik: Super hammockery.
[1:09:16 – 1:09:16] Erik: Yeah.
[1:09:16 – 1:09:18] Erik: The hammocker’s dream back here.
[1:09:19 – 1:09:21] Adam: We could just move in, I would say.
[1:09:21 – 1:09:22] Adam: Let’s just stay here for maybe a month.
[1:09:24 – 1:09:28] Adam: And we got to get some anti-aircraft artillery.
[1:09:29 – 1:09:33] Adam: Maybe like a pumpkin gun we can fire at the, grow some gourds.
[1:09:33 – 1:09:34] Adam: Gourds.
[1:09:34 – 1:09:36] Erik: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[1:09:36 – 1:09:37] Erik: We can start growing some gourds.
[1:09:39 – 1:09:44] Erik: Yeah, this is a spot that, I mean, it’s the exact opposite of the last site we were at.
[1:09:44 – 1:09:44] Erik: Yeah.
[1:09:45 – 1:09:49] Erik: uh, three, which was like, I couldn’t imagine spending any amount of time here.
[1:09:50 – 1:09:52] Erik: This just doesn’t seem like a fun spot to be.
[1:09:52 – 1:09:53] Erik: This is the exact opposite.
[1:09:54 – 1:09:55] Erik: Like I want to stay here.
[1:09:55 – 1:09:59] Erik: I could see spending multiple days here and just having a grand old time.
[1:10:00 – 1:10:06] Erik: And unless eight’s got something, some real magic up its sleeve, I don’t feel like this, uh, campsite’s getting knocked off the podium.
[1:10:06 – 1:10:07] Erik: It’s probably going to go down.
[1:10:07 – 1:10:09] Adam: I would say this is the gold medal site right now.
[1:10:09 – 1:10:12] Adam: This is the gold standard for Tuscarora campsites.
[1:10:12 – 1:10:13] Erik: If not, uh,
[1:10:14 – 1:10:41] Adam: this section of the boundary waters in general isn’t it just the boundary waters though like the the whole story of the park you know it’s one site is an f minus and then you think these what’s going on with these sites and then you come around the corner and you find this thing yeah and it’s an a plus it’s like yeah why did they put a site there and then you come to this spot you’re like well if there wasn’t a campsite here i would be riding my congressman so yeah is there is there more 10 pads it looks like there’s plenty
[1:10:41 – 1:10:42] Erik: Unlimited.
[1:10:42 – 1:10:47] Adam: Unlimited tent pads, unlimited hammockry, including this divine sight.
[1:10:47 – 1:10:48] Erik: Yes.
[1:10:48 – 1:10:48] Erik: This is nice.
[1:10:48 – 1:10:51] Erik: This almost makes me want to get back on the ground and sleep again.
[1:10:51 – 1:10:52] Erik: Yeah.
[1:10:52 – 1:10:53] Erik: It’s like nice, soft sand.
[1:10:53 – 1:10:54] Erik: It’s perfectly flat.
[1:10:54 – 1:10:55] Erik: It’s right next to the water.
[1:10:56 – 1:10:58] Erik: But there are also some nice hammock trees right here, too.
[1:10:59 – 1:11:01] Erik: So I’m going A-plus overall.
[1:11:02 – 1:11:02] Erik: Number one sight.
[1:11:03 – 1:11:04] Erik: A-plus.
[1:11:05 – 1:11:05] Erik: Woo!
[1:11:05 – 1:11:05] Erik: Woo!
[1:11:09 – 1:11:11] Adam: Number one, gold medal site.
[1:11:11 – 1:11:13] Adam: All right, let’s go drink some wine.
[1:11:13 – 1:11:19] Adam: I don’t even know what was happening earlier, but…
[1:11:37 – 1:11:37] Adam: Let them see that.
[1:11:38 – 1:11:39] Adam: They need to see our faces.
[1:11:39 – 1:11:40] Adam: Also, not a boom mic.
[1:11:40 – 1:11:42] Adam: It’s actually a video recording.
[1:11:42 – 1:11:43] Adam: Hey, hey, hey, hey.
[1:11:44 – 1:11:45] Erik: Nobody said you get to talk.
[1:11:46 – 1:11:47] Erik: Who said you get to talk?
[1:11:47 – 1:11:49] Erik: I said if you come out, you can come out.
[1:11:49 – 1:11:51] Adam: Last one, I can do whatever the hell I want.
[1:11:51 – 1:11:54] Erik: I said if you come out, you have to keep your mouth shut.
[1:11:57 – 1:11:58] Erik: All right.
[1:11:58 – 1:12:00] Adam: Three, two, one.
[1:12:01 – 1:12:03] Erik: Welcome to Campsite 8.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:06] Erik: We’re out here having a good old time.
[1:12:07 – 1:12:10] Erik: And we’re going to review it, but man, it’s just, you can’t.
[1:12:11 – 1:12:16] Erik: After you’ve been to Campsite 7 on Tuscarora, it’s almost like nothing else matters in this world.
[1:12:16 – 1:12:16] Erik: True.
[1:12:17 – 1:12:20] Erik: And we’ll do our best, but… 7!
[1:12:22 – 1:12:23] Erik: Campsite 7.
[1:12:23 – 1:12:25] Erik: Hype, hype, hype.
[1:12:25 – 1:12:26] Erik: So, yeah.
[1:12:26 – 1:12:29] Erik: Actually, Campsite 8 here is right around the corner.
[1:12:29 – 1:12:30] Adam: Pretty impeccable landing.
[1:12:30 – 1:12:32] Adam: This is a very nice landing.
[1:12:32 – 1:12:33] Erik: Yeah.
[1:12:33 – 1:12:34] Adam: For starters.
[1:12:34 – 1:12:37] Erik: Right after you come in on the missing link portage.
[1:12:37 – 1:12:39] Erik: It’s probably the second closest campsite to that.
[1:12:39 – 1:12:41] Erik: Then Campsite 9.
[1:12:42 – 1:12:43] Erik: Which seems like a long time ago now.
[1:12:43 – 1:12:44] Erik: We’ve been out here all day.
[1:12:45 – 1:12:46] Erik: It’s late in the day.
[1:12:46 – 1:12:48] Erik: Well, later in the day.
[1:12:48 – 1:12:49] Erik: I guess that’s how time works.
[1:12:49 – 1:12:51] Erik: But, yeah.
[1:12:51 – 1:12:53] Erik: Can’t really say anything bad about this landing.
[1:12:54 – 1:12:59] Erik: There’s a nice little flat spot here, almost a perfect little canoe sliding spot.
[1:12:59 – 1:13:01] Erik: Easily maneuverable.
[1:13:03 – 1:13:04] Adam: B plus, A minus.
[1:13:04 – 1:13:08] Adam: I’m getting a lot of good vibes, a lot of chill vibes from this landing.
[1:13:08 – 1:13:09] Erik: A on the landing.
[1:13:09 – 1:13:09] Erik: A landing.
[1:13:10 – 1:13:10] Erik: All right.
[1:13:11 – 1:13:14] Erik: So we should move up into camp then.
[1:13:24 – 1:13:25] Erik: Hmm.
[1:13:26 – 1:13:27] Erik: Another wood gnome.
[1:13:28 – 1:13:29] Erik: What is happening out here?
[1:13:30 – 1:13:32] Erik: Is it just because of…
[1:13:32 – 1:13:34] Adam: I’m telling you, it’s those fall campers.
[1:13:34 – 1:13:38] Adam: They’re very considerate fall campers and they always leave wood.
[1:13:38 – 1:13:40] Erik: It’s a fall camper thing.
[1:13:40 – 1:13:41] Adam: It’s a classy thing to do.
[1:13:41 – 1:13:42] Adam: Probably nobody’s…
[1:13:42 – 1:13:46] Adam: I’m going to go ahead and say nobody’s camped here this spring because it’s not legal.
[1:13:46 – 1:13:47] Erik: Hasn’t been legal.
[1:13:48 – 1:13:52] Adam: Got ourselves a nice old style Smith foundry grate.
[1:13:53 – 1:13:54] Adam: Love it.
[1:13:54 – 1:13:55] Adam: Look at this thing.
[1:13:55 – 1:13:56] Erik: Hashtag Smith.
[1:13:57 – 1:14:01] Adam: Got a nice chunky log rock sitting next to it.
[1:14:01 – 1:14:04] Erik: Yeah, that is a nice chunky log rock.
[1:14:04 – 1:14:04] Erik: Rock log?
[1:14:04 – 1:14:06] Adam: It’s not a muffin top.
[1:14:06 – 1:14:08] Adam: It’s more of a muffin bottom rock.
[1:14:08 – 1:14:10] Erik: Yeah, somebody’s peeled the top off already.
[1:14:10 – 1:14:10] Erik: Ah.
[1:14:11 – 1:14:13] Adam: And the seeding is okay.
[1:14:13 – 1:14:13] Adam: Oh, dear.
[1:14:14 – 1:14:14] Adam: Oh, no, though.
[1:14:15 – 1:14:15] Adam: Oh, no.
[1:14:15 – 1:14:16] Adam: Oh, no.
[1:14:17 – 1:14:19] Adam: Oh, no.
[1:14:20 – 1:14:21] Erik: Oh, no.
[1:14:22 – 1:14:24] Erik: It’s a tiny, tiny.
[1:14:24 – 1:14:25] Erik: That’s not nearly enough fireball.
[1:14:25 – 1:14:28] Erik: If you’re going to bring fireball, bring out more than just the flask.
[1:14:29 – 1:14:29] Erik: Come on.
[1:14:30 – 1:14:30] Adam: What is this?
[1:14:31 – 1:14:32] Adam: It’s a half liter?
[1:14:32 – 1:14:33] Erik: Not even.
[1:14:33 – 1:14:34] Erik: That’s a flask.
[1:14:34 – 1:14:34] Adam: It’s a pint.
[1:14:34 – 1:14:36] Erik: And then don’t just… Ugh.
[1:14:36 – 1:14:38] Erik: All right, so we found a bottled fireball.
[1:14:38 – 1:14:39] Erik: It’s coming with us.
[1:14:39 – 1:14:42] Erik: We’ll post a picture of all the garbage we picked up today.
[1:14:42 – 1:14:45] Adam: So I don’t know if it’s winter campers and the stuff’s getting…
[1:14:46 – 1:14:54] Adam: Under the snow or, you know, if that de Havilland beaver is just throwing their bottles out the window as they fly over, that’s probably what’s happening.
[1:14:54 – 1:14:56] Erik: I wouldn’t be surprised.
[1:14:56 – 1:14:59] Erik: It’s a little scrappy when it comes to the wood gnoming.
[1:14:59 – 1:15:01] Erik: Somebody’s got to come in here and do some landscaping.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:04] Erik: It’s just a lot of old junk.
[1:15:04 – 1:15:05] Erik: What is this piece?
[1:15:06 – 1:15:06] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:15:06 – 1:15:07] Erik: Long splitter.
[1:15:07 – 1:15:14] Erik: That looks like the piece of wood that Kevin Costner or whatever Robert Redford made the Wonder Bat out of.
[1:15:15 – 1:15:16] Adam: Yeah, I was probably struck by lightning.
[1:15:16 – 1:15:17] Adam: That’s what it looks like.
[1:15:17 – 1:15:19] Erik: Just a splinter of wood.
[1:15:19 – 1:15:21] Adam: Just waiting to become a champion.
[1:15:21 – 1:15:29] Erik: Yeah, this is, besides the stuff that you can change, which is like just the general piles of brush.
[1:15:30 – 1:15:31] Erik: And look at all this.
[1:15:31 – 1:15:33] Erik: It looks like there’s been chainsaw work done here.
[1:15:34 – 1:15:35] Erik: There’s so much duff.
[1:15:35 – 1:15:36] Erik: Look at all this.
[1:15:37 – 1:15:37] Adam: It’s crazy.
[1:15:38 – 1:15:39] Adam: Someone went to town on this.
[1:15:39 – 1:15:40] Erik: It’s like mulched.
[1:15:41 – 1:15:48] Erik: Uh, it must’ve been, must’ve been winter camped at, but God, could you imagine coming out here in the winter with a portage?
[1:15:49 – 1:15:49] Erik: Um, yeah, I don’t know.
[1:15:50 – 1:15:53] Erik: I would say it’s a solid B. I like the fire grate area.
[1:15:53 – 1:15:54] Adam: B plus?
[1:15:54 – 1:15:54] Adam: Yeah.
[1:15:54 – 1:15:55] Erik: All right.
[1:15:55 – 1:15:55] Erik: B plus.
[1:15:55 – 1:16:00] Adam: I like that big rock and the old grate and the, uh, the complimentary rocks are…
[1:16:01 – 1:16:01] Erik: Impeccable.
[1:16:02 – 1:16:06] Erik: Yeah, somebody just needs to clean it up with like a rake and yeah somebody get a rake out here.
[1:16:06 – 1:16:17] Erik: Yeah Yeah, we just we’re not gonna be cleaning up the wood gnome fields We got one real decent fire or a tent spot over here.
[1:16:17 – 1:16:20] Erik: There’s one over there There’s one right there
[1:16:21 – 1:16:21] Erik: There’s definitely some…
[1:16:21 – 1:16:22] Adam: Plenty of room.
[1:16:22 – 1:16:23] Erik: Plenty of room for tents.
[1:16:23 – 1:16:25] Adam: Definitely a pretty nice setup here.
[1:16:25 – 1:16:29] Adam: And you could definitely figure out a way to get a bunch of hammocks going in here too.
[1:16:29 – 1:16:30] Adam: Yeah.
[1:16:30 – 1:16:30] Adam: No problemo.
[1:16:30 – 1:16:31] Erik: For sure.
[1:16:32 – 1:16:35] Erik: I would put this one up there with one of the nicer sites on the lake.
[1:16:35 – 1:16:36] Erik: Definitely in the top half.
[1:16:37 – 1:16:47] Adam: You know, I got to say, you know, that beach site seven had some real nice big birch, but none of these sites have really had, like, the real nice big pine tree to them.
[1:16:47 – 1:16:50] Adam: No, the only one that had one was that island site at four.
[1:16:50 – 1:16:51] Adam: The island site had that one.
[1:16:51 – 1:16:53] Adam: And that wasn’t that big, but it was very nice.
[1:16:53 – 1:16:53] Erik: Yeah.
[1:16:53 – 1:16:54] Erik: Very symmetrical.
[1:16:54 – 1:16:55] Erik: It’s future big.
[1:16:55 – 1:16:56] Erik: Future bigs.
[1:16:56 – 1:16:57] Erik: And it had an apprentice.
[1:16:57 – 1:16:58] Adam: Yes.
[1:16:59 – 1:17:01] Adam: Passing down that knowledge of the big tree.
[1:17:01 – 1:17:02] Adam: Root knowledge.
[1:17:02 – 1:17:03] Adam: Yeah.
[1:17:03 – 1:17:09] Erik: Yeah, so this is a nice site, but I think it’s still going to end up just off the podium.
[1:17:09 – 1:17:10] Erik: It’s a B.
[1:17:10 – 1:17:14] Erik: After we have some time to ruminate, we’ll come back probably from the studio.
[1:17:15 – 1:17:42] Erik: with our uh at least our top top three but it’s probably pretty obvious at this point which ones those are uh but yeah this is uh this is a nice spot but there’s definitely three nicer sites on the lake uh five four and obviously seven yeah the two like closest to the portage here on both sides of this bay are both i would say bb plus very nice sites but they’re definitely i don’t for me at least i don’t think they’re top three you know if you want to stay close to the portage
[1:17:43 – 1:17:44] Adam: These are fine.
[1:17:44 – 1:17:45] Adam: These are really good sites.
[1:17:45 – 1:17:46] Erik: Right, yeah.
[1:17:46 – 1:17:50] Erik: The first one we started at this morning, 9, was like right away.
[1:17:50 – 1:17:57] Erik: I think we gave it an A-, but now if you’re measuring that against all the other sites on the lake, it might take it down to a B+, but it’s still a really nice site.
[1:17:57 – 1:17:58] Adam: Yeah, no doubt.
[1:17:58 – 1:18:05] Erik: I would say overall, like Tuscarora, you know, you look at some lakes sometimes and it’s like, well, there’s one really nice one and then like, I don’t know.
[1:18:05 – 1:18:05] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:05 – 1:18:06] Adam: Kind of some.
[1:18:06 – 1:18:07] Adam: There’s really only one junker.
[1:18:08 – 1:18:08] Adam: Right.
[1:18:08 – 1:18:12] Adam: And there is one other that’s sort of bad and then an interesting one.
[1:18:12 – 1:18:13] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:13 – 1:18:17] Adam: And then there’s kind of a category of ones that are B, B plus, nice sites.
[1:18:18 – 1:18:18] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:18 – 1:18:21] Adam: And then there’s three that really I felt stood out.
[1:18:21 – 1:18:22] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:22 – 1:18:24] Adam: And so, and we caught a fish.
[1:18:24 – 1:18:25] Adam: And we got a fish.
[1:18:25 – 1:18:26] Adam: And we had a really nice picnic.
[1:18:26 – 1:18:27] Adam: Yeah.
[1:18:27 – 1:18:28] Erik: We had an amazing picnic.
[1:18:28 – 1:18:29] Erik: And we had a nice day.
[1:18:30 – 1:18:31] Erik: Generally, very nice day.
[1:18:31 – 1:18:36] Erik: I would kind of compare it to like Winchell, where it’s like you think of Winchell and you just think of like real nice sights.
[1:18:37 – 1:18:41] Erik: And like Tuscarora, I wasn’t 100% sure because I haven’t been to all of them, but now we have.
[1:18:42 – 1:18:50] Erik: And I would say above average, close to like well above average campsites when you compare them to like all of the sites in the Boundary Waters, I would say…
[1:18:51 – 1:19:01] Erik: When I think Tuscarora now, I’m going to be like, man, you paddle out there, it’s not one of those situations where you’re like, well, if we don’t get that one, we’re kind of screwed because all the rest of them are not really that great.
[1:19:01 – 1:19:11] Erik: You’ve got at least five options, half the lake of solid options with a couple that are just like, it’ll make probably your year if you get campsite seven, five, or four.
[1:19:13 – 1:19:13] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:19:13 – 1:19:16] Erik: Glowing reviews from Tumble Home.
[1:19:16 – 1:19:17] Erik: Bring a pinata.
[1:19:18 – 1:19:19] Erik: Multiple piñatas.
[1:19:42 – 1:19:43] Erik: Thanks for listening.
[1:19:43 – 1:19:44] Erik: This is Eric.
[1:19:44 – 1:19:51] Erik: We recorded these campsite reviews almost two months ago now.
[1:19:51 – 1:19:59] Erik: And at the time, we figured we’d get together and do a little outro session in the studio.
[1:20:00 – 1:20:03] Erik: Maybe some more in-depth fishing numbers.
[1:20:04 – 1:20:09] Erik: Some perspectives from Andy at Tuscarora Lodge.
[1:20:11 – 1:20:11] Erik: And…
[1:20:12 – 1:20:14] Erik: Boy, oh boy, wouldn’t you know it?
[1:20:16 – 1:20:17] Erik: Fourth of July is upon us.
[1:20:18 – 1:20:20] Erik: The heat of the summer is here.
[1:20:21 – 1:20:24] Erik: The crowds are about.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:30] Erik: And we just ran out of time to give this episode a proper ending.
[1:20:31 – 1:20:36] Erik: So, boy, yeah, a couple of real professionals coming at you here.
[1:20:37 – 1:20:40] Erik: I can say with certainty that we will be back soon.
[1:20:41 – 1:20:48] Erik: next week with Tuscarora part two, where we will give a little bit more of a typical lake review.
[1:20:49 – 1:20:51] Erik: We had some fun with the in the field aspects.
[1:20:51 – 1:20:58] Erik: I hope you enjoyed, I hope you enjoy the video, our plus video that accompanies it.
[1:20:59 – 1:21:04] Erik: Um, first of its kind, we’d love to continue trying to do things of that nature.
[1:21:05 – 1:21:06] Erik: Um, but yeah,
[1:21:07 – 1:21:16] Erik: just wanted to give a little bit of a round out because I think if it would have just ended with that last campsite review, uh, a tad, a tad jarring.
[1:21:17 – 1:21:25] Erik: Um, so, um, next week, part two of Tuscarora fishing generals, our thoughts on some of the routes that you can take from it.
[1:21:26 – 1:21:28] Erik: Um, some fun information from Andy from Tuscarora.
[1:21:29 – 1:21:30] Erik: He’s got some, uh,
[1:21:31 – 1:21:33] Erik: Some voicemails for us, essentially, on that.
[1:21:35 – 1:21:37] Erik: Probably a mid-season update.
[1:21:37 – 1:21:40] Erik: You know, fire bans, the…
[1:21:41 – 1:21:54] Erik: The news that the Bonjewaters is being overrun, I feel like I see articles and or posts on that topic being continually talked about.
[1:21:54 – 1:21:59] Erik: And my feelings on it, you know, as an outfitter, we’ll talk about it.
[1:22:01 – 1:22:02] Erik: Yeah, it’s been a crazy year.
[1:22:03 – 1:22:04] Erik: And so, yeah.
[1:22:04 – 1:22:06] Erik: and then that’ll be next week.
[1:22:06 – 1:22:08] Erik: After that, we are still doing question of the week.
[1:22:08 – 1:22:09] Erik: How do you sleep?
[1:22:10 – 1:22:11] Erik: It’s been two years.
[1:22:11 – 1:22:12] Erik: How are you sleeping?
[1:22:12 – 1:22:13] Erik: Are you a sky sleeper?
[1:22:14 – 1:22:16] Erik: Are you a dirty ground sleeper?
[1:22:16 – 1:22:18] Erik: I mean, no, that’s totally fine if you are.
[1:22:18 – 1:22:18] Erik: Um,
[1:22:20 – 1:22:26] Erik: And then even further beyond, we’re looking deep, deep into the shag of the hourglass.
[1:22:28 – 1:22:32] Erik: A few weeks out, this kind of created itself.
[1:22:32 – 1:22:38] Erik: If you’re not on our Tumble Home casts on Reddit, you are missing out because things are happening.
[1:22:38 – 1:22:40] Erik: Memes are being created.
[1:22:40 – 1:22:44] Erik: Questions of the week are being formed all on their own.
[1:22:44 – 1:22:49] Erik: It’s like its own organism that is just doing its own thing.
[1:22:50 – 1:22:52] Erik: And we love it for that.
[1:22:53 – 1:23:06] Erik: But one question that kind of came up on the subreddit that sort of took off, and it is an interesting question, is what do you drink while you’re out in the boundary waters?
[1:23:06 – 1:23:07] Erik: Alcohol?
[1:23:07 – 1:23:08] Erik: Not alcohol?
[1:23:09 – 1:23:11] Erik: A little of this, a little of that.
[1:23:12 – 1:23:15] Erik: What’s your drinking style?
[1:23:15 – 1:23:16] Erik: Coffee?
[1:23:16 – 1:23:16] Erik: Instant?
[1:23:16 – 1:23:17] Erik: Brewed?
[1:23:17 – 1:23:17] Erik: Pressed?
[1:23:18 – 1:23:19] Erik: Percolator?
[1:23:19 – 1:23:22] Erik: You’re a monster if you’re a percolator, I’ll tell you that.
[1:23:23 – 1:23:24] Erik: Crystal light?
[1:23:25 – 1:23:26] Erik: Kool-Aid?
[1:23:27 – 1:23:29] Erik: Palkahol?
[1:23:29 – 1:23:30] Erik: Remember Palkahol?
[1:23:30 – 1:23:31] Erik: The powdered…
[1:23:33 – 1:23:34] Erik: I mean, crap.
[1:23:35 – 1:23:39] Erik: But yeah, so going forward, we will post these questions.
[1:23:40 – 1:23:51] Erik: But if you are not on the social medias, which, boy, I envy you if you’re not on the social medias, send me an email.
[1:23:52 – 1:23:54] Erik: TumbleHomeCast at gmail.com.
[1:23:54 – 1:23:55] Erik: How are you sleeping?
[1:23:55 – 1:23:56] Erik: What are you drinking?
[1:23:56 – 1:23:58] Erik: What are your liquid drinks?
[1:23:59 – 1:24:09] Erik: methods on the water, on the portage, to your filter, you’re using iodine tablets, you’re boiling.
[1:24:11 – 1:24:14] Erik: And, you know, end of the day, sitting around the campfire, what’d you sip?
[1:24:15 – 1:24:15] Erik: Sipping on.
[1:24:16 – 1:24:25] Erik: Sipping on some wine, sipping on a cold growler of beer and one of those, you know, you know the name of them.
[1:24:25 – 1:24:27] Erik: They can keep things cold for a while.
[1:24:28 – 1:24:31] Erik: I believe they’re called hydro flasks.
[1:24:31 – 1:24:32] Erik: Yeah, wine.
[1:24:34 – 1:24:37] Erik: Obviously, number one seed in the tumble tourney.
[1:24:38 – 1:24:39] Erik: That might be a popular opinion.
[1:24:39 – 1:24:41] Erik: Out of the box, of course.
[1:24:42 – 1:24:43] Erik: And then beyond that, who knows?
[1:24:43 – 1:24:44] Erik: We’ll be into August by then.
[1:24:44 – 1:24:56] Erik: I will probably be so worn down by the heat and the mobs of people that we might just shutter in and call it a show.
[1:24:58 – 1:24:58] Erik: No, we won’t.
[1:24:59 – 1:25:01] Erik: Anyway, this has gone on for way too long.
[1:25:01 – 1:25:03] Erik: I intended on this being like a two-minute outro.
[1:25:04 – 1:25:11] Erik: But you can tell that I, you know, given the opportunity, will talk.
[1:25:11 – 1:25:15] Erik: So with that being said, thank you for joining us on this episode on Tuscarora.
[1:25:16 – 1:25:17] Erik: We’ll see you next week.
[1:25:17 – 1:25:24] Erik: We will wrap Tuscarora and keep you up to date on questions of the week.
[1:25:25 – 1:25:25] Erik: Happy paddling.
[1:25:26 – 1:25:27] Erik: Enjoy the rest of your Saturdays.
[1:25:28 – 1:25:28] Erik: I love you all.
[1:25:31 – 1:25:31] Erik: We’ll see you out there.
