[0:00:56 – 0:00:56] Erik: 41.
[0:00:56 – 0:00:57] Adam: EP 41.
[0:00:57 – 0:00:57] Adam: Yes.
[0:00:57 – 0:00:58] Adam: Yes.
[0:01:02 – 0:01:07] Erik: And we are, as always, sponsored by Clearwater Historic Lodge and Canoe Outfitters.
[0:01:07 – 0:01:09] Erik: And this week also sponsored by…
[0:01:13 – 0:01:14] Erik: Yes.
[0:01:14 – 0:01:16] Adam: I jumped the gun on that.
[0:01:16 – 0:01:17] Erik: A little bit, but we’re good.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:22] Erik: We are, in fact, sponsored by a friend of the show and listener, Paul.
[0:01:22 – 0:01:23] Adam: A patron of the show.
[0:01:24 – 0:01:29] Erik: And, yeah, he was kind enough to drop off some sponsored beers for us.
[0:01:29 – 0:01:32] Erik: This happens to be some…
[0:01:32 – 0:01:35] Erik: some Third Streets, Sampler, Tallboys.
[0:01:35 – 0:01:37] Erik: We’ve all got a different one here.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:38] Erik: So cheers, Paul.
[0:01:39 – 0:01:40] Erik: I’ve got a hoplift.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:44] Erik: I see some free speech, a honeydew.
[0:01:44 – 0:01:44] Erik: Nice.
[0:01:44 – 0:01:45] Erik: Cheers, Paul.
[0:01:45 – 0:01:46] Erik: Cheers, Paul.
[0:01:54 – 0:01:55] Adam: Nice.
[0:01:57 – 0:01:59] Cheyenne: This is my first honeydew of the season.
[0:01:59 – 0:02:00] Adam: Wow, it’s the perfect time for it.
[0:02:00 – 0:02:04] Adam: It is about 80 degrees and really nice and humid and sunny.
[0:02:04 – 0:02:07] Adam: After a foggy, kind of cold day in town at least.
[0:02:08 – 0:02:09] Adam: I’m sure it was nicer up the hill here.
[0:02:11 – 0:02:12] Adam: So yeah, we’re here at the landing.
[0:02:12 – 0:02:13] Adam: We’ve got the canoes loaded.
[0:02:14 – 0:02:15] Adam: The pup is ready.
[0:02:16 – 0:02:17] Adam: Pup Arrow is here with us.
[0:02:18 – 0:02:21] Adam: We also have two special guests on this journey.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:22] Adam: Natalie is here.
[0:02:23 – 0:02:23] Adam: You’ve met Natalie before.
[0:02:24 – 0:02:25] Cheyenne: Many times.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:25] Cheyenne: Hello.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:28] Cheyenne: And our good friend Cheyenne.
[0:02:28 – 0:02:28] Cheyenne: A.K.A.
[0:02:28 – 0:02:29] Cheyenne: Shea Bay.
[0:02:29 – 0:02:30] Adam: Shea Bay is here.
[0:02:31 – 0:02:39] Adam: So we got four humans and one dog and four delicious cold beers here at the landing at Brule Lake.
[0:02:39 – 0:02:41] Adam: And I’m really looking forward to this trip.
[0:02:41 – 0:02:43] Adam: I haven’t had a chance to get excited about this trip.
[0:02:43 – 0:02:44] Adam: Too busy.
[0:02:45 – 0:02:47] Adam: But on the drive up here, I was really getting quite amped.
[0:02:47 – 0:02:48] Cheyenne: Cheers.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:48] Cheyenne: Cheers.
[0:02:50 – 0:02:51] Erik: Cheers again.
[0:02:51 – 0:02:57] Erik: So yeah, the source of this beer is from friend Paul.
[0:02:58 – 0:02:59] Adam: He just dropped it off.
[0:02:59 – 0:02:59] Erik: Well, no.
[0:02:59 – 0:03:09] Erik: So I was walking into work, which is, you know, there’s a… From where I live to the main lodge is kind of like a gauntlet in the morning.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:10] Erik: Right.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:12] Erik: Where it’s like, I have to get to my coffee.
[0:03:12 – 0:03:13] Erik: And a lot of times it’s like…
[0:03:14 – 0:03:17] Erik: hacking through guests who are wanting early things.
[0:03:17 – 0:03:25] Erik: And it’s like 6.30, I’m bleary-eyed, and he’s kind of, you know, unpacking some stuff in his truck and flags me down.
[0:03:25 – 0:03:29] Erik: And I was just like, oh man, all I want is coffee.
[0:03:30 – 0:03:35] Erik: Whatever he has to say or do, I’m not going to have more than 5% of my brain working towards.
[0:03:36 – 0:03:40] Erik: And he opens with, you know, I love the podcast and just wanted to…
[0:03:41 – 0:03:42] Erik: Show my gratitude.
[0:03:42 – 0:03:52] Erik: I know you guys are quote-unquote sponsored by beers, but I wanted to show my official sponsorship with some beer for the show.
[0:03:52 – 0:03:53] Erik: And I was like, oh, awesome.
[0:03:53 – 0:03:54] Erik: Thanks for listening.
[0:03:55 – 0:03:55] Erik: That’s so cool.
[0:03:55 – 0:03:59] Erik: And it pulls out actually one of these Third Street samplers.
[0:04:00 – 0:04:02] Erik: I was like, oh, that’s totally great.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:02] Erik: Awesome.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:03] Erik: Thank you.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:05] Erik: More than appreciated.
[0:04:05 – 0:04:09] Erik: And then he drops the tailgate and pulls out another one.
[0:04:09 – 0:04:10] Erik: I’m like, oh, wow.
[0:04:10 – 0:04:12] Erik: He’s like, well, you know, you got to share with Adam.
[0:04:12 – 0:04:13] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:13] Erik: Thank you.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:14] Erik: I appreciate that.
[0:04:16 – 0:04:21] Erik: And then I’m like, okay, I’m going to start heading into the lodge and we’re going to, you know, get the day going.
[0:04:21 – 0:04:22] Erik: He’s like, no, there’s more.
[0:04:23 – 0:04:27] Erik: And he starts pulling out case after case of beer.
[0:04:27 – 0:04:34] Erik: And next thing I know, I am walking into the outfitting building at 640 in the morning, looking like I’m loading up the back of a liquor store.
[0:04:35 – 0:04:35] Erik: So…
[0:04:37 – 0:04:38] Erik: The beer has been greatly enjoyed.
[0:04:39 – 0:04:40] Erik: Thanks, Paul.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:43] Erik: But, yeah, heck of a way to start the day.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:45] Erik: Not anticipating that at all.
[0:04:45 – 0:04:48] Adam: And this is really a heck of a way to start a trip, too.
[0:04:49 – 0:04:56] Adam: So, you know, obviously we’re going to finish these, dispose of them in the vehicles, and then grab the puppy and we will hit the water.
[0:04:57 – 0:04:58] Adam: But, yeah, this is really nice.
[0:04:58 – 0:05:01] Adam: I got the feet in the water here a little bit, splashing around.
[0:05:02 – 0:05:03] Adam: Oh, it’s hot out.
[0:05:03 – 0:05:04] Adam: This is going to be a really nice summer trip.
[0:05:04 – 0:05:08] Adam: I have never been out on the 4th of July proper ever, I don’t think.
[0:05:08 – 0:05:08] Adam: Have you?
[0:05:09 – 0:05:10] Erik: Yes, I have.
[0:05:10 – 0:05:15] Erik: So that’s one of the things, the theme of this almost entirely field-recorded episode.
[0:05:16 – 0:05:21] Erik: We are going to be testing the theory that there is a bit of a lull over the 4th of July.
[0:05:21 – 0:05:23] Erik: It is, in fact, July 3rd.
[0:05:24 – 0:05:25] Erik: So we’ll be testing that.
[0:05:26 – 0:05:29] Erik: And we will also be testing a new pup in a canoe, seeing how that goes.
[0:05:30 – 0:05:38] Erik: And we will also have to start considering how many of these beer sponsorships need to go to Pete in Iowa in terms of royalties.
[0:05:39 – 0:06:01] Erik: yeah well there’s that you know to get to but we’ll we’ll let we’ll figure that out later um well we are getting a a tad bit of a late start but the days are long and we uh have about half of this beer to go and uh in the meantime we will uh i’m pretty amped this beer is going down really well and it’s hot so this hop lift is going right down the drain
[0:06:02 – 0:06:05] Erik: So we’re going to see if we can find a site here on Brule quick and then go from there.
[0:06:05 – 0:06:08] Adam: We’re going to take the first site that looks decent that we can get.
[0:06:09 – 0:06:14] Adam: But we do have probably three hours of good daylight left, so we don’t have to settle either.
[0:06:15 – 0:06:17] Adam: And we’re well prepared because we’re not portaging tonight.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:20] Adam: We have a little bit of kindling going on.
[0:06:20 – 0:06:21] Adam: A little bit.
[0:06:21 – 0:06:27] Adam: Just a bit of kindling, and we have some ice-cold beers and growlers for when we get to camp, too.
[0:06:27 – 0:06:36] Erik: Oh, yes, and we did take a note from the circus, and we have, if you can believe it, a full bag.
[0:06:37 – 0:06:40] Adam: A little embarrassed, but I’m pretty proud that we have chips in a bag.
[0:06:40 – 0:06:41] Adam: Full bag of kettle chips.
[0:06:41 – 0:06:43] Adam: Just sitting in the back of the canoe.
[0:06:43 – 0:06:44] Erik: Yep.
[0:06:44 – 0:06:46] Erik: Toss them in loose as they’re supposed to be.
[0:06:46 – 0:06:48] Adam: We are not really packed very well right now.
[0:06:48 – 0:06:51] Adam: We’re packed pretty manically and very circus-like.
[0:06:52 – 0:06:53] Adam: So the circus has come to Brule.
[0:06:53 – 0:06:56] Adam: So, you know, we’re going to win in Rome.
[0:06:57 – 0:06:59] Adam: When in Rome, no portages.
[0:06:59 – 0:07:02] Adam: When on Brule, you know, just throw everything you got in there.
[0:07:03 – 0:07:04] Adam: We have a screen tent, for crying out loud.
[0:07:05 – 0:07:06] Adam: A screen tent.
[0:07:06 – 0:07:13] Adam: I think that’s probably a good place to end it, and maybe we’ll check back once we’ve arrived at camp, and we’ll tell you a little bit about our campsite.
[0:07:13 – 0:07:15] Adam: So thank you for coming with us on this voyage.
[0:07:15 – 0:07:17] Adam: We’ll come home in the field.
[0:07:30 – 0:07:31] Erik: Alright.
[0:07:32 – 0:07:42] Erik: After an arduous grueling two and a half minute paddle we have arrived.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:43] Adam: Did we paddle?
[0:07:43 – 0:07:45] Adam: I think the wind just blew us here.
[0:07:46 – 0:07:47] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:47 – 0:07:48] Adam: Back to whence you came.
[0:07:49 – 0:07:50] Erik: We are out on
[0:07:51 – 0:08:01] Erik: Unnamed Island, I believe we’re going to go ahead and call it Jock Mock Island because it is directly across from Jock Mock Point.
[0:08:01 – 0:08:02] Adam: You can see the point.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:09] Erik: I don’t know if we necessarily deserve the wine, but we do.
[0:08:09 – 0:08:09] Adam: Yeah, we do.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:14] Erik: So, yeah, we maybe not quite.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:17] Adam: Four fingers of sunlight above the horizon here and it’s hot.
[0:08:17 – 0:08:18] Erik: It is hot.
[0:08:18 – 0:08:19] Erik: We have the swim trunks on.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:25] Adam: We’re gazing out to the west and blue skies and a beautiful sunset here on Brule.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:28] Adam: The Vesperian Hills in the distance.
[0:08:29 – 0:08:29] Adam: They’re calling.
[0:08:30 – 0:08:30] Adam: Oh, they call.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:34] Adam: They’re going to have to wait one more day.
[0:08:35 – 0:08:38] Erik: No, I think we maybe paddled.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:39] Erik: Maybe two miles.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:40] Erik: Maybe two miles.
[0:08:41 – 0:08:46] Erik: And first thoughts on July 4th lull.
[0:08:47 – 0:08:48] Adam: I’ve seen one other group.
[0:08:49 – 0:08:50] Erik: One other campsite was for sure taken.
[0:08:52 – 0:08:53] Adam: Who knows, though?
[0:08:53 – 0:08:53] Adam: Who knows?
[0:08:53 – 0:08:54] Adam: There could have been, but I doubt it.
[0:08:54 – 0:08:57] Adam: There’s not that many cars in the parking lot.
[0:08:57 – 0:09:01] Adam: And so I think the lull is there’s something to it, but we’ll see, you know.
[0:09:02 – 0:09:03] Adam: We’re just getting out of here.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:07] Adam: I think most people are probably in their camps, and we’ll see tomorrow, you know.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:08] Adam: But for now…
[0:09:09 – 0:09:11] Adam: We got this lake to ourselves, baby.
[0:09:12 – 0:09:12] Erik: Sounds good.
[0:09:13 – 0:09:19] Erik: I think the paddle down Cherokee will be the best determination of the July 4th lull.
[0:09:19 – 0:09:20] Erik: Absolutely.
[0:09:20 – 0:09:22] Erik: Because there’s about 20 campsites on that lake.
[0:09:23 – 0:09:33] Erik: We are out here on the precipice of Jock Mock Island, slapping the bag, looking down the massive length.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:33] Erik: Woo!
[0:09:35 – 0:09:42] Erik: of Brule Lake may very well be the best view from any campsite on the lake.
[0:09:43 – 0:09:48] Erik: I’ve camped at a few of them out here, paddled by a few of them.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:50] Erik: I think that this one has the best view.
[0:09:50 – 0:09:52] Erik: The actual campsite itself,
[0:09:52 – 0:10:04] Adam: Pretty weak, but then there’s this side area down on the point, which you can explore and maybe swim off of, possibly throw a slip bobber by the tiny island off the big island here.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:08] Adam: So I think it’s got a lot going for it.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:13] Adam: We’ll have to do an official campsite review maybe tomorrow, but I like this campsite a lot.
[0:10:14 – 0:10:15] Adam: Really can’t complain.
[0:10:15 – 0:10:18] Adam: And we’re about dead center on the middle of Brule here.
[0:10:18 – 0:10:20] Adam: So the possibilities…
[0:10:21 – 0:10:22] Adam: Old friend there, endless.
[0:10:23 – 0:10:34] Erik: Yeah, no, when you paddle up, the landing is kind of narrow, and the site is a little cramped and grassy, but there’s a trail leading out to the west side of the island, which is kind of on a nice point.
[0:10:34 – 0:10:39] Erik: We’re on about a 45-degree angle slab of ancient rock, I am sure.
[0:10:39 – 0:10:40] Adam: Ancient.
[0:10:41 – 0:10:50] Erik: Looking down the length of the lake, just preparing for an inevitable sunset, whether it will be, you know…
[0:10:51 – 0:11:13] Adam: providing a show or not remains to be seen there are some clouds in the sky i think it’s gonna there’s gonna be a show i feel it but i feel like we are meant to be on this site this site has chosen us once again second time on brule second time on this site i’m just drawn to it i guess naturally like the uh iron in your needle is drawn towards la tour de nord
[0:11:14 – 0:11:20] Erik: So how was the first experience with Arrow in the canoe?
[0:11:20 – 0:11:25] Adam: Yeah, I mean, it was you and I together, Cheyenne and Natalie in the other boat, and we had Arrow with us.
[0:11:25 – 0:11:28] Adam: And I don’t know, you really couldn’t tell.
[0:11:28 – 0:11:33] Adam: I mean, when we first got in, she was kind of jumpy on the gunnels, but I thought ahead.
[0:11:33 – 0:11:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:34 – 0:11:37] Adam: And I brought a bag of large chewing bones.
[0:11:38 – 0:11:41] Adam: And so I just gave her one of those, and she kind of calmed down and laid.
[0:11:41 – 0:11:44] Adam: She basically laid down for most of that paddle.
[0:11:44 – 0:11:50] Adam: Pretty well behaved, and I had her on the leash, and I’m determined to not let her off leash nor cable on this trip.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:54] Adam: Even though we were on an island, it’s a pretty good-sized island, and…
[0:11:55 – 0:12:24] Adam: i can lose her in the yard if she gets off the leash she can hide in the tall grass and i won’t find her until she moves or comes to me so i really don’t feel that we need to leave her off the leash for any reason on this trip but she is uh we’ve got her blanket out here we’re setting up the hammocks back here uh and uh she’s she seems pretty content and she’s a pretty chill dog so i think we’re okay you know just i’m excited to see how she does with multiple paddling and portaging tomorrow once we get up to you know vesper
[0:12:24 – 0:12:30] Erik: Yes, the portaging has not been tested, but I was in the front of the canoe for the first time in maybe years today.
[0:12:30 – 0:12:32] Erik: Yeah, that was weird.
[0:12:32 – 0:12:38] Erik: Very, very weird only seeing like two and a half feet of a canoe for the first time in a long time.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:39] Adam: Staring straight into the sun.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:41] Erik: Staring straight into a blazing sun.
[0:12:41 – 0:12:48] Erik: I did not feel any overly, you know, disconcerting shifts from the dog.
[0:12:48 – 0:12:52] Adam: Yeah, maybe once or twice she got a little to the right and kind of up on the gunnels, but…
[0:12:53 – 0:12:54] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:56] Adam: We’ve had her in the boat before, and that’s kind of her deal.
[0:12:56 – 0:13:01] Adam: She kind of looks around, but you can tell she’s definitely not interested in jumping in.
[0:13:01 – 0:13:05] Adam: It’s like somebody has been throwing her in a river against her will on her daily walks.
[0:13:06 – 0:13:08] Adam: She’s not totally cool with water.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:14] Adam: She’ll get in like, you know, she’ll wade, but she won’t really swim on her own accord.
[0:13:14 – 0:13:17] Adam: So I’m not really too worried about her jumping ship, but…
[0:13:17 – 0:13:36] Adam: yeah um yeah overall she did pretty good just laying down you know and so we got here she’s a good girl she got a treat we got her blanket out for her she’s tied up to a nice cedar tree back here on the point in the shade and she is she’s a very good girl good job arrow good job arrow and we’re about to test the waters here
[0:13:37 – 0:13:38] Adam: Yeah, it is July.
[0:13:38 – 0:13:40] Adam: I think we should probably get in.
[0:13:40 – 0:13:44] Erik: I think we probably should, so we’re going to go ahead, set the microphone down.
[0:13:44 – 0:13:48] Erik: If you hear shrieking, that means we’ve most likely split femurs.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:49] Adam: It looks deep.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:53] Erik: It looks deep, and we’re going to go ahead and just test it.
[0:13:53 – 0:13:54] Erik: I will be diving in head first.
[0:13:54 – 0:13:56] Adam: Yeah, that’s a smart move.
[0:13:56 – 0:13:58] Adam: Go in head first just to make sure it’s deep.
[0:13:58 – 0:14:03] Adam: I’ll come in after with a gentle, modified butt flop.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:09] Erik: I would suggest a straight pencil dive in with your toes pointed.
[0:14:09 – 0:14:10] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:14:10 – 0:14:12] Erik: Yeah, take your shoes off as well.
[0:14:12 – 0:14:13] Erik: Point the toes.
[0:14:13 – 0:14:15] Adam: Not able to point my toes anymore.
[0:14:15 – 0:14:16] Erik: Oh.
[0:14:16 – 0:14:20] Erik: That’s what age will do to you.
[0:14:20 – 0:14:22] Adam: Yeah, too bad.
[0:14:22 – 0:14:23] Erik: We’re going to jump in at the same time?
[0:14:23 – 0:14:24] Adam: Yeah, let’s go.
[0:14:24 – 0:14:24] Erik: All right.
[0:14:24 – 0:14:25] Erik: Ready?
[0:14:25 – 0:14:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:34 – 0:14:36] Adam: Yeah, it’s refreshing maybe.
[0:14:42 – 0:14:43] Erik: Oh, that’s the good stuff.
[0:14:45 – 0:14:46] Erik: So nice.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:53] Adam: Arrow is not happy about this.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:55] Adam: What are you guys doing?
[0:14:55 – 0:14:57] Adam: I don’t appreciate it.
[0:14:58 – 0:14:58] Adam: Woof.
[0:14:59 – 0:14:59] Adam: Woof.
[0:15:01 – 0:15:03] Adam: Getting out of here is going to be a challenge.
[0:15:04 – 0:15:06] Adam: Might have to go around into the marina.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:08] Adam: Yeah, this is okay over here.
[0:15:09 – 0:15:11] Adam: Jump off of that rock for days.
[0:15:12 – 0:15:12] Adam: All right.
[0:15:17 – 0:15:18] Adam: All right.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:22] Adam: So, yeah, Arrow wants in now.
[0:15:22 – 0:15:23] Adam: No, she doesn’t.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:25] Adam: So that was pretty good.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:27] Adam: Only one broken femur.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:29] Adam: Yeah, we’re still hobbling around.
[0:15:29 – 0:15:30] Adam: No problemo.
[0:15:30 – 0:15:31] Erik: You’re going to head back.
[0:15:32 – 0:15:33] Erik: Fun two hours out in the park.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:36] Erik: You have to respect it.
[0:15:37 – 0:15:41] Adam: Well.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:43] Adam: One for the lake and one for you.
[0:15:47 – 0:15:48] Adam: Arrivederci.
[0:16:03 – 0:16:04] SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
[0:16:38 – 0:16:39] Erik: All right, we are out here celebrating.
[0:16:41 – 0:16:43] Erik: Merganser’s overhead.
[0:16:43 – 0:16:45] Erik: Uncle Sam in our hearts.
[0:16:46 – 0:16:47] Erik: It is July 4th.
[0:16:49 – 0:16:51] Erik: It’s God’s birthday.
[0:16:52 – 0:16:54] Erik: And we’re celebrating.
[0:16:55 – 0:16:56] Erik: The only way we know how.
[0:16:56 – 0:16:58] Erik: Sitting around a smoldering log.
[0:16:59 – 0:17:05] Erik: with probably one of the worst smells known to man, which is burning eggshells.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:10] Erik: We have just finished a loaded frittata.
[0:17:11 – 0:17:15] Erik: I mean, I can’t think of something that wasn’t in that frittata.
[0:17:18 – 0:17:20] Erik: Parboiled, pre-shredded.
[0:17:20 – 0:17:24] Adam: Ah, yes.
[0:17:24 – 0:17:26] Erik: I am being fact-checked in the field.
[0:17:28 – 0:17:31] Erik: Par baked, shredded in the field.
[0:17:33 – 0:17:34] Erik: Yellow peppers.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:36] Erik: Onions.
[0:17:39 – 0:17:39] Erik: Love.
[0:17:40 – 0:17:44] Adam: Cubed ham.
[0:17:45 – 0:17:45] Erik: Ched.
[0:17:47 – 0:17:48] Erik: Shredded ched.
[0:17:50 – 0:17:51] Erik: Cherry tomatoes.
[0:17:52 – 0:17:53] Erik: Avocado.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:53] Erik: And 12 eggs.
[0:17:58 – 0:17:58] Adam: Fresh dill.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:00] Erik: Fresh dill.
[0:18:01 – 0:18:05] Erik: The fresh dill set the frittata over the edge.
[0:18:05 – 0:18:06] Erik: And it’s…
[0:18:08 – 0:18:08] Erik: Is that true?
[0:18:09 – 0:18:09] Erik: No.
[0:18:09 – 0:18:09] Erik: Oh.
[0:18:09 – 0:18:10] Adam: I just love dill.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:12] Erik: Well, we all love…
[0:18:12 – 0:18:12] Adam: I’ve never…
[0:18:13 – 0:18:13] Adam: It’s a true story.
[0:18:13 – 0:18:15] Adam: I’ve never put dill in a frittata, though.
[0:18:15 – 0:18:16] Adam: I think it’s a winner.
[0:18:16 – 0:18:17] Erik: I think it’s our first time.
[0:18:18 – 0:18:22] Erik: I don’t think there’s, honestly, anything that smells worse than burning eggshells.
[0:18:22 – 0:18:24] Erik: I mean, maybe tires and skunks?
[0:18:25 – 0:18:26] Adam: Smells like burning hair, really.
[0:18:26 – 0:18:28] Adam: I mean, so, yeah, not good company.
[0:18:28 – 0:18:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:18:30 – 0:18:40] Erik: So that breakfast in combination with the three cups of coffee and the smell of burning corpses is going to have me running towards the…
[0:18:40 – 0:18:41] Adam: The dumper.
[0:18:41 – 0:18:41] Adam: The dumper.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:42] Erik: Yes.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:52] Erik: Let’s take it easy on the swears this week to alleviate the necessary post-processing bleeping.
[0:18:53 – 0:18:55] Erik: It’s already going to be a challenge with the 30 tracks…
[0:18:57 – 0:19:00] Adam: Let’s keep it clean here on Uncle Sam Island, please.
[0:19:00 – 0:19:01] Adam: Yes.
[0:19:01 – 0:19:02] Adam: Out of respect.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:03] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:03 – 0:19:04] Erik: Fourth of July in the park.
[0:19:05 – 0:19:08] Erik: Camped directly across from Jacques Mach Point.
[0:19:10 – 0:19:12] Erik: This is Jacques Mach Island.
[0:19:14 – 0:19:14] Erik: And…
[0:19:16 – 0:19:21] Erik: Do we want to give our official campsite review at this point?
[0:19:21 – 0:19:22] Adam: Yeah, I think this would be a good time.
[0:19:22 – 0:19:23] Adam: Let me pull up a chair.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:23] Erik: Yes.
[0:19:24 – 0:19:25] Erik: Pull up a chair.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:28] Erik: We’ve got mildly overcast skies.
[0:19:29 – 0:19:34] Erik: It feels like it’s southeast winds, maybe 5 to 10.
[0:19:34 – 0:19:35] Erik: 5 to 10.
[0:19:37 – 0:19:47] Adam: We had some tall clouds moving in from the south this morning and a faint rumble or two of thunder at one point, but Natalie put on her rain gear and thus thwarted the clouds.
[0:19:47 – 0:19:49] Adam: They went around us to the west.
[0:19:50 – 0:19:51] Adam: Let’s start with the landing.
[0:19:52 – 0:19:54] Adam: It looks a little intimidating.
[0:19:54 – 0:19:57] Adam: The site itself doesn’t look that great from the water.
[0:19:58 – 0:20:00] Adam: You have a nice opening facing the south here.
[0:20:01 – 0:20:03] Adam: towards the Jacques Mach.
[0:20:03 – 0:20:10] Adam: The landing looks a little rocky and rough, but in truth, once you approach, there is a perfect marina for one canoe.
[0:20:11 – 0:20:13] Adam: So you just have to take turns unloading.
[0:20:13 – 0:20:20] Adam: So we pulled in, we got all our stuff out of Ghost, and then beached her up on the grassy knoll here.
[0:20:20 – 0:20:24] Adam: And then Natalie and Cheyenne were able to pull right into our spot.
[0:20:24 – 0:20:24] Adam: It’s perfect.
[0:20:24 – 0:20:25] Adam: It’s a nice little channel.
[0:20:26 – 0:20:27] Erik: It’s like a single slip.
[0:20:27 – 0:20:32] Adam: Yeah, so, I mean, it’s not a perfect landing by any means, but really easy to get in and out.
[0:20:32 – 0:20:37] Adam: I mean, we’re all wearing sandals, basically, so wet feet, no problem.
[0:20:37 – 0:20:39] Adam: Dog was able to get in and out pretty easy.
[0:20:39 – 0:20:41] Adam: Nobody really got injured on the landing, so I’m going to give it a B.
[0:20:42 – 0:20:43] Erik: Oh, you’re going B?
[0:20:43 – 0:20:44] Adam: Yeah, I mean, it’s not a beach.
[0:20:44 – 0:20:45] Adam: It’s not a sandy beach.
[0:20:45 – 0:20:47] Adam: That’s an A. I would give it a C+.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:48] Adam: Okay.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:49] Adam: I’m splitting hairs now.
[0:20:49 – 0:20:49] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:50 – 0:20:52] Adam: Okay, so the landing is adequate.
[0:20:53 – 0:20:54] Adam: We’re sitting here at the fire grate.
[0:20:55 – 0:20:57] Adam: There’s one bite of frittata left.
[0:20:57 – 0:20:59] Adam: Somebody needs to come here and help us finish this breakfast.
[0:21:00 – 0:21:02] Adam: We’re going to give it to the dog otherwise.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:05] Adam: So we had to dig it out a little.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:08] Adam: There’s a nice little rock wall behind here.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:10] Adam: There’s some terrible firewood.
[0:21:10 – 0:21:15] Adam: There’s some decent-looking stuff we might be able to throw on tonight, but we got better stuff.
[0:21:16 – 0:21:28] Erik: It’s not a Bonjuarez campsite without a pile of terrible birch, like punky birch, and basically trees that you could tell were cut down like a week ago.
[0:21:28 – 0:21:31] Adam: Yeah, like a large chunk of charred alder over here.
[0:21:31 – 0:21:32] Adam: Gross.
[0:21:32 – 0:21:32] Adam: Nasty.
[0:21:33 – 0:21:36] Adam: But the fire gray itself is an old model.
[0:21:36 – 0:21:37] Adam: It’s the wide bar.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:39] Adam: You’re not going to be able to throw pizza biters on this one.
[0:21:41 – 0:21:49] Adam: But it is marked U.S. Forest Service, and it’s got all its bars and is in intact shape with a decent backing of rock.
[0:21:49 – 0:21:53] Adam: Kind of sitting sideways to the lake, which is okay.
[0:21:53 – 0:21:56] Adam: So, I don’t know.
[0:21:56 – 0:21:57] Adam: It’s a little low.
[0:21:58 – 0:21:59] Adam: Yes.
[0:21:59 – 0:22:00] Adam: But it’s level.
[0:22:00 – 0:22:02] Adam: I mean, we poured the eggs in there.
[0:22:02 – 0:22:03] Adam: It’s basically level.
[0:22:03 – 0:22:04] Adam: It’s egg level.
[0:22:04 – 0:22:05] Adam: So, I don’t know.
[0:22:05 – 0:22:06] Adam: Give it a fair grade.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:07] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:07] Adam: A B.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:09] Adam: Maybe a C-plus on the fire grade, too.
[0:22:09 – 0:22:12] Erik: Yeah, I’m thinking fire grate’s probably in the sea range.
[0:22:12 – 0:22:16] Erik: Just the campsite around the fire grate is…
[0:22:17 – 0:22:23] Erik: I think if you were to paddle by and see this campsite from the water, it would look pretty unimpressive.
[0:22:24 – 0:22:29] Erik: There’s not really too much going for it, just right in the immediate fire grate area.
[0:22:31 – 0:22:33] Erik: I’m going to go ahead and give it a C. On the fire grate?
[0:22:33 – 0:22:33] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:22:34 – 0:22:39] Adam: Well, there is some Boy Scout carved out a little piece of the bench log over here.
[0:22:39 – 0:22:43] Adam: It’s a nice flat spot, which was perfect to place the cherry tomatoes.
[0:22:44 – 0:22:46] Adam: And the dill rested there nicely without falling.
[0:22:47 – 0:22:48] Adam: So that was nice.
[0:22:48 – 0:22:54] Adam: And there is a nice table rock, but it’s way back over beyond the first tent pad here for some reason.
[0:22:55 – 0:22:55] Adam: I don’t understand it.
[0:22:56 – 0:22:57] Adam: But, yeah, I don’t know.
[0:22:57 – 0:23:03] Adam: It’s a C. So the landing and the fire grade itself, not high marks, but we’ve saved the best for last.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:11] Erik: Yeah, so this is down on the southwest tip of Jacques Moc Island, across from Jacques Moc Point.
[0:23:12 – 0:23:19] Erik: And upon first inspection, probably, overall, a C, maybe a C+.
[0:23:20 – 0:23:21] Erik: Pretty average sight.
[0:23:22 – 0:23:30] Erik: There is a trail leading out to the very tip of the island, though, which offers spectacular views to the west.
[0:23:31 – 0:23:37] Erik: Amazing hammock potential and slip bobbering slash fishing rocks.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:43] Erik: which I would say skyrockets the site to a close to an A rating.
[0:23:44 – 0:23:45] Adam: It really does.
[0:23:45 – 0:23:47] Adam: It’s a huge difference maker.
[0:23:48 – 0:23:53] Adam: You know, we were able to immediately don the short shorts and jump in for a swim last night.
[0:23:53 – 0:23:55] Adam: It’s nice and deep right off those rocks on the point.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:59] Adam: We were able to enjoy a very majestic and patriotic sunset there.
[0:24:00 – 0:24:06] Adam: And, yeah, we’ve got our hammock set up down yonder on the point there, and it’s incredible.
[0:24:07 – 0:24:10] Adam: So it’s kind of a tale of two campsites here.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:11] Adam: You’ve got the actual setup here.
[0:24:12 – 0:24:15] Adam: There’s maybe one or two reasonable tent pads for sure.
[0:24:16 – 0:24:20] Adam: We’re in hammocks, though, but we’re down just a couple clicks that-a-way.
[0:24:21 – 0:24:25] Adam: A short hike to the west, and that’s the real area you want to hang out in.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:35] Adam: So, yeah, as soon as we kill this fire with the smoking eggshells, I think we’re going to relocate back down there again, and I might get back in the lake.
[0:24:36 – 0:24:37] Adam: It’s nice out here.
[0:24:37 – 0:24:38] Erik: It is nice.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:39] Erik: A little…
[0:24:40 – 0:24:41] Erik: cooling breeze.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:55] Erik: I’ve got chunks of egg and mayo debris from breakfast floating in my coffee, so you know you’re camping when you’re just drinking breakfast juice along with the coffee.
[0:24:56 – 0:24:57] Adam: Hashtag breakfast juice.
[0:24:58 – 0:24:59] Erik: Yes, let’s get that trending.
[0:25:00 – 0:25:01] Erik: Hashtag breakfast juice.
[0:25:02 – 0:25:07] Erik: Out here in the park, we saw two groups go by early this morning.
[0:25:07 – 0:25:07] Erik: I
[0:25:08 – 0:25:10] Adam: Yeah, they were early morning launchers.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:11] Adam: They’re riding a tailwind.
[0:25:11 – 0:25:13] Adam: They’re probably all going to Cherokee the way they were going.
[0:25:14 – 0:25:19] Adam: Neither of them waved to us or appreciated that we sang the national anthem to them at high volumes.
[0:25:20 – 0:25:22] Adam: We’ve become what we sort of hate on this trip.
[0:25:22 – 0:25:24] Adam: We’re packed like a circus.
[0:25:24 – 0:25:29] Adam: We got a little bit of the circus infecting us and our attitudes, but, you know, we’re on Brule.
[0:25:30 – 0:25:30] Adam: What are you going to do?
[0:25:30 – 0:25:31] Adam: We didn’t have to portage.
[0:25:32 – 0:25:34] Adam: So anyways, I think we should wrap this up on a grade.
[0:25:35 – 0:25:40] Adam: But I would like to point out too that there isn’t really, there’s some nice cedars down in Hammock Town.
[0:25:41 – 0:25:42] Adam: But there’s really no big pine.
[0:25:44 – 0:25:45] Adam: It’s looking pretty shabby overall.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:46] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:51] Adam: I’m torn on what to give the grade because this area we’re sitting in, not so hot.
[0:25:52 – 0:25:55] Adam: But down in the cedar grove on the point, it’s an A+.
[0:25:56 – 0:25:57] Adam: And it’s maybe a C over here.
[0:25:58 – 0:25:59] Adam: So what, did we split the difference?
[0:25:59 – 0:25:59] Adam: It’s a B?
[0:26:00 – 0:26:01] Adam: It’s on an island.
[0:26:01 – 0:26:04] Adam: It’s on a named island, basically, Jacques-Marc Island.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:06] Erik: Well, I think we gave the island the name.
[0:26:06 – 0:26:08] Adam: It’s across from Jacques-Marc Point.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:09] Adam: What else are we going to call it?
[0:26:09 – 0:26:32] Erik: pretty much should be named jock mock yeah i mean split the difference i kind of like that there is or is the is the is the sweet spot over there so great that it drags the the c plus spot over here up so far up that it gets to a i don’t think i would go full a but i would bring it up a full letter grade and go b plus i think that’s fair i think that’s fair
[0:26:33 – 0:26:34] Erik: Yeah.
[0:26:34 – 0:26:38] Erik: You know, it’s in the fire grid area.
[0:26:38 – 0:26:39] Erik: Yeah, a little scrubby.
[0:26:39 – 0:26:44] Erik: But that side point action for the swimming and fishing.
[0:26:44 – 0:26:45] Erik: The views.
[0:26:45 – 0:26:45] Erik: And the views.
[0:26:46 – 0:26:52] Erik: I don’t know if there’s a better set on the lake that has a better view down the vast, vast length of Brule.
[0:26:52 – 0:26:57] Adam: Yeah, we do have a nice look with the sunset last night and the Vesperian Hills in the distance.
[0:26:58 – 0:27:00] Adam: The clouds are kind of trickling across.
[0:27:00 – 0:27:01] Adam: It was really something.
[0:27:02 – 0:27:03] Adam: So, B+.
[0:27:04 – 0:27:05] Adam: It’s official.
[0:27:05 – 0:27:06] Adam: It’s in the books.
[0:27:06 – 0:27:07] Erik: It’s agreed.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:08] Erik: B+.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:11] Erik: The last eggshell is smoldering.
[0:27:11 – 0:27:16] Erik: The flecks of breakfast are being finished up in the cup of coffee.
[0:27:17 – 0:27:26] Erik: A few last-minute items will be packed up, and we will be on our way towards the Vesperian Hills, which are calling us.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:27] Adam: There, I can hear them.
[0:27:29 – 0:27:30] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:28:01 – 0:28:04] Adam: Well, we’re waylaid.
[0:28:05 – 0:28:06] Adam: Waylaid on brulee.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:13] Erik: Sitting under a canoe under the rain that seemed like it was going to be quickly passing.
[0:28:14 – 0:28:23] Erik: It seems to be settling in in a gray steady rain fashion.
[0:28:24 – 0:28:36] Erik: The wall cloud that was encroaching upon us seems to have misrepresented itself in the form of a quickly passing rainstorm.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:40] Erik: And now has, yeah, we are literally in the cloud.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:42] Adam: Yeah, it’s right on us.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:44] Adam: In the camp.
[0:28:45 – 0:29:03] Adam: we are camped under the canoe flipped upside down like for a makeshift shelter um we’re still getting wet but you know it’s better than standing out in it at least we’re sitting on shore and not out in the lake not as wet and i don’t know
[0:29:04 – 0:29:15] Erik: If I can say this for sure, but I would venture a guess that this may be the first podcast ever recorded under a canoe on this island.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:16] Adam: Probably.
[0:29:16 – 0:29:21] Adam: Chances are very good that this is the first talk show ever done on this campsite.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:32] Adam: But, I don’t know, you know, people are very creative and clever creatures, so we can’t say for certain, but history in the making.
[0:29:34 – 0:29:36] Adam: The dog doesn’t seem to care at all, by the way.
[0:29:36 – 0:29:38] Adam: She’s just chewing on an old birch log back here.
[0:29:39 – 0:29:41] Adam: Doesn’t even phase at her.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:46] Adam: She’s not really scared by lightning or thunder at all, so she’s totally fine with it.
[0:29:46 – 0:29:48] Adam: She’s having a good time, which is what’s most important here.
[0:29:49 – 0:29:57] Adam: I mean, a big part of going on this day trip out of our base camp was to get the dog some paddling experience and hopefully some good portaging experience as well.
[0:29:58 – 0:30:01] Adam: We have yet to make it to a portage, but, you know, she did pretty good in the canoe today.
[0:30:02 – 0:30:03] Adam: And she’s not really fazed by this.
[0:30:03 – 0:30:08] Adam: I just want to make sure she’s having a good time today and that we don’t get into something rough with her.
[0:30:08 – 0:30:11] Adam: But, you know, all we can do now is hunker down and wait it out.
[0:30:12 – 0:30:17] Erik: Yeah, she’s literally mulching a, like, 12-inch round birch log.
[0:30:17 – 0:30:19] Erik: Completely content.
[0:30:22 – 0:30:22] Erik: Wow.
[0:30:22 – 0:30:27] Erik: Well, we’ll post a picture of the damage she has done to this log.
[0:30:27 – 0:30:29] Erik: It is a downed dead tree, so no worries.
[0:30:30 – 0:30:36] Erik: Yeah, she’s shredding up that wood and peeling birch bark for future campers at this point.
[0:30:36 – 0:30:40] Adam: I knew she was a good dog, but very thoughtful.
[0:30:40 – 0:30:45] Erik: At this point, what else are you going to do besides leave a little bit of birch bark for your… Wow.
[0:30:45 – 0:30:47] Adam: Spinning it and peeling.
[0:30:47 – 0:30:48] Adam: Spin and peel.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:48] Adam: Bite, bite, bite.
[0:30:50 – 0:30:51] Adam: Get some biting action.
[0:30:51 – 0:30:52] Erik: Get some biting audio.
[0:30:57 – 0:31:01] Adam: No, bite.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:02] Adam: Shredding and sniffing.
[0:31:03 – 0:31:04] Adam: Very good dog.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:13] Erik: So, checking in from the potential day trip that may still occur.
[0:31:14 – 0:31:15] Erik: It may not.
[0:31:15 – 0:31:16] Erik: This rain is…
[0:31:18 – 0:31:18] Erik: Settling in.
[0:31:19 – 0:31:20] Erik: We’ve got two water bottles.
[0:31:22 – 0:31:24] Erik: Some snacks.
[0:31:24 – 0:31:25] Erik: I’ve got a full water bottle.
[0:31:26 – 0:31:27] Erik: Mine is full.
[0:31:27 – 0:31:29] Adam: We have a pretty decently full wine bag.
[0:31:29 – 0:31:30] Erik: Oh, yes.
[0:31:30 – 0:31:32] Erik: Worst case scenario, we can…
[0:31:32 – 0:31:36] Adam: I think the audio quality under here, this is a nice recording studio.
[0:31:36 – 0:31:36] Adam: Yeah.
[0:31:36 – 0:31:39] Adam: Studio C. Studio C under the canoe.
[0:31:39 – 0:31:40] Adam: W for Winona.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:41] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:31:41 – 0:31:42] Erik: We are under M1.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:45] Adam: M1, the classic clear water boat.
[0:31:46 – 0:31:50] Adam: Ask about it next time you book a trip at Clearwater Lodge.
[0:31:50 – 0:31:52] Erik: That’s 1-800-CLEARWATER.
[0:31:52 – 0:31:53] Erik: M1.
[0:31:54 – 0:31:55] Erik: Ask for M1.
[0:31:55 – 0:31:56] Adam: The famous brew boat.
[0:32:00 – 0:32:04] Adam: Years I’ve lived, I’ve loved, I’ve enriched others, I think.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:05] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:32:05 – 0:32:06] Adam: I’ve tried to do things and be creative.
[0:32:06 – 0:32:07] Adam: Like, that’s fine.
[0:32:07 – 0:32:10] Adam: But I really don’t want to die, like, just being struck by lightning.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:11] Adam: Although, I don’t know.
[0:32:11 – 0:32:14] Adam: What better way to go than just getting zapped?
[0:32:14 – 0:32:15] Adam: You would never know, right?
[0:32:16 – 0:32:17] Adam: all of a sudden you’d just be dead.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:21] Adam: Or would it be really painful?
[0:32:21 – 0:32:30] Adam: There are people who live through a lightning strike, so I guess you could just get zapped and then you feel like you got put in an oven for a couple hours and all your bones broken.
[0:32:30 – 0:32:31] Adam: I don’t know what happens.
[0:32:32 – 0:32:37] Erik: Yeah, no, I’ve heard of people that have gotten struck by lightning and survived and been fine.
[0:32:37 – 0:32:44] Erik: I’ve also heard of people that have gotten, like, struck by lightning and then have, like, lived a life of, like, basically constant agony.
[0:32:45 – 0:32:45] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[0:32:45 – 0:32:52] Erik: Like, it messed their nerves up so much or something that, like, tripped, like, all of their pain, like, receptors.
[0:32:52 – 0:32:52] Erik: Wow.
[0:32:53 – 0:32:57] Erik: Yeah, so then it would be like, yeah, I might as well just have that lightning bolt take me out.
[0:32:58 – 0:32:59] Erik: Like, I don’t even understand.
[0:32:59 – 0:33:01] Erik: How do you survive a lightning strike?
[0:33:01 – 0:33:03] Adam: I would think you would just explode, honestly.
[0:33:03 – 0:33:07] Adam: You’ve seen, like, videos of trees getting, like, struck and exploded.
[0:33:07 – 0:33:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:11] Adam: I would think the same would happen to a human, but I don’t know.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:12] Erik: Fact check us.
[0:33:13 – 0:33:14] Adam: Fact check us.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:15] Erik: What happens when you get struck by lightning?
[0:33:20 – 0:33:26] Adam: When you do the kinds of things we do, it’s always in the back of your mind when you’re on the water and you see that first flash of lightning.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:28] Adam: It’s get to shore.
[0:33:28 – 0:33:30] Adam: I’ve been in some really silly and dangerous situations.
[0:33:30 – 0:33:35] Adam: I really don’t want to do that anymore, you know, with the lightning or like big waves.
[0:33:35 – 0:33:36] Adam: It’s not worth it, you know?
[0:33:36 – 0:33:39] Adam: It’s like, well, it certainly seems to be lightning up here a little bit.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:44] Adam: The thunder’s kind of moved to our right and our east and north of us now.
[0:33:45 – 0:33:49] Adam: Meanwhile, I really wonder what is happening back in camp.
[0:33:50 – 0:33:52] Adam: I really hope they put the firewood away under the other canoe.
[0:33:53 – 0:33:59] Adam: And I hope they’ve got that screen tent up and that it actually has a roof and not just like a screen roof.
[0:33:59 – 0:34:00] Adam: I kind of think it’s got a real roof.
[0:34:02 – 0:34:02] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:34:02 – 0:34:06] Adam: They’re probably sitting there reading and gossiping and doing makeup.
[0:34:09 – 0:34:30] Adam: this is a sprawling audio track ranging from the you know the meaning of life have you lived a good long quality life to then yes that women just do their makeup and sit we’re gonna have to basically scrap this one due to my um blatant sexism blatant sexism
[0:34:31 – 0:34:42] Erik: And on another note, completely off tangent, I love that Arrow was blessed by her mother.
[0:34:43 – 0:35:05] Adam: doris with the white tipped tail yeah it’s always fun to watch that going through the woods yeah like the grass at home right now is really tall and so then she gets in that she loves to go in the grass when it’s dewy it cools her down she just runs through it like i can imagine when we get snow again this winter then she’ll that’s how she’ll run through deep snow but yeah you just see the little white tip of the tail
[0:35:06 – 0:35:07] Erik: And she sticks it up.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:08] Erik: Like straight up.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:08] Erik: Right.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:12] Adam: She kind of keeps it up, you know, like so and wags it when she’s running through the grass.
[0:35:12 – 0:35:18] Adam: So you just see nothing but the grass kind of moving and then the white tip of her tail and then the rest of her is black on top.
[0:35:19 – 0:35:20] Adam: So yeah, she’s got white feets.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:24] Adam: Ooh, yeah.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:26] Adam: That deserved a bark.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:28] Adam: How’d she know it was going to do that?
[0:35:28 – 0:35:30] Adam: She felt it before we even heard it somehow.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:31] Adam: Her lateral line.
[0:35:33 – 0:35:34] Adam: And she felt it in the tail.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:37] Adam: She’s got a thunder receptor.
[0:35:38 – 0:35:40] Erik: Too bad you made those sexist comments.
[0:35:40 – 0:35:42] Erik: We don’t get to play the sweet thunder track now.
[0:35:43 – 0:35:45] Adam: You can cut it.
[0:35:45 – 0:35:46] Erik: Just a 15 second bleep.
[0:35:46 – 0:35:47] Adam: Yeah, just cut it out.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:49] Erik: Yeah, no, I don’t know.
[0:35:49 – 0:35:51] Adam: We are just sitting around reading.
[0:35:51 – 0:35:53] Erik: What else would you be doing in the rain?
[0:35:53 – 0:35:55] Adam: If I had a book I’d be reading right now.
[0:35:55 – 0:35:59] Adam: If I had makeup, I’d be doing my makeup because I look like a train wreck.
[0:35:59 – 0:36:01] Erik: I mean, I’m painting my nails.
[0:36:01 – 0:36:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:36:02 – 0:36:04] Adam: I did do my nails before we came out.
[0:36:04 – 0:36:04] Adam: They’re nice.
[0:36:06 – 0:36:07] Adam: Both the toes and the fingers.
[0:36:08 – 0:36:16] Erik: No, like we were saying, the tail on Arrow with the white tip and the way that…
[0:36:17 – 0:36:19] Erik: She, like, sticks it up.
[0:36:20 – 0:36:23] Erik: It’s the same way that Doris does when she’s in the weeds like that.
[0:36:23 – 0:36:27] Erik: It makes me think that there’s, like, another breed in them.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:30] Erik: They don’t seem like straight Alaskan Husky.
[0:36:30 – 0:36:36] Erik: The way that their tails stick up like that, there’s, like, some kind of a hound in them at some point.
[0:36:36 – 0:36:39] Adam: I’ve had people ask if she’s got any, like, shepherd in her.
[0:36:39 – 0:36:47] Adam: And, you know, our friends have Maya, and we always joke that she was a shepherd-husky mix, like a Shepsky.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:53] Adam: She’s got a lot of shepherd look to her, and they do look pretty similar to Maya, both Doris and Arrow.
[0:36:53 – 0:36:57] Adam: And, you know, all the dogs in Cook County are related somehow.
[0:36:58 – 0:36:59] Adam: Who knows what got in them.
[0:36:59 – 0:37:03] Adam: But, yeah, they’re interesting little doggies.
[0:37:03 – 0:37:09] Adam: But it is really cool to see the similarities, these subtle similarities between mother and daughter.
[0:37:09 – 0:37:11] Adam: And even Grandma, you’re noting how they put their paw up.
[0:37:12 – 0:37:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:37:12 – 0:37:13] Adam: Like, hey.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:37] Adam: kind of it’s not a shake it’s more of like a wave yeah they’re trying to get your attention yeah the mini the dog yeah so ayla really does it the grandma and then doris also does it and now we’ve been noticing arrow does the same exact thing like when you come over by her she’ll be like hey yeah it’s funny it’s really a it’s really adorbs little dog salute yeah a little doggy salute well maybe you have to bleep this too it’s a little little doggy heil hitler
[0:37:41 – 0:38:03] Erik: we’re under a canoe way late on an island on Brule what do you want from us I’m not even 100% sure what this episode is going to be it’s going to be probably one of the more one of the more random ones we’ll just call this one this episode just call it the circus or God’s birthday God’s birthday I mean that’s what the 4th of July is celebrating right
[0:38:04 – 0:38:04] Erik: Or Jesus.
[0:38:05 – 0:38:05] Adam: Or Uncle Sam.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:06] Adam: I’m not sure.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:07] Erik: All of them.
[0:38:07 – 0:38:08] Erik: That’s the Trinity.
[0:38:08 – 0:38:09] Adam: Yeah, the Trinity.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:11] Adam: God, Jesus, Uncle Sam.
[0:38:12 – 0:38:13] Erik: Yep.
[0:38:13 – 0:38:15] Erik: It seems to be kind of lighting up.
[0:38:16 – 0:38:17] Adam: Still a lot of thunder here.
[0:38:21 – 0:38:22] Adam: It’s not a ton of lightning, though.
[0:38:22 – 0:38:23] Adam: It’s more of like a heat thunder.
[0:38:23 – 0:38:24] Erik: It’s up in the clouds.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:25] Adam: It’s just rolling.
[0:38:27 – 0:38:28] Adam: The clouds have lost all their definition.
[0:38:28 – 0:38:30] Adam: It’s just a gray blob above us now.
[0:38:31 – 0:38:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:38:32 – 0:38:33] Adam: The rain’s letting up.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:35] Adam: It does seem to be lighting up a little here.
[0:38:35 – 0:38:36] Adam: The light is coming up again.
[0:38:37 – 0:38:40] Adam: The darkest part of the day has passed, I think.
[0:38:40 – 0:38:41] Erik: It was dark for a little bit.
[0:38:41 – 0:38:43] Adam: Yeah, it was like scary dark.
[0:38:43 – 0:38:44] Erik: Scary dark.
[0:38:44 – 0:38:49] Adam: It looked like the kind of storm that could start ripping up trees, like that kind of troubling.
[0:38:49 – 0:38:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:38:50 – 0:38:53] Adam: There was a moment there where I thought we were really in for some trouble.
[0:38:53 – 0:38:56] Adam: But, yeah, so we pulled in.
[0:38:56 – 0:39:00] Adam: We did the smart play here, and it never really materialized in that way.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:00] Adam: No.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:03] Adam: But, I mean, it still could.
[0:39:03 – 0:39:04] Adam: I don’t know what’s coming.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:04] Adam: That’s the thing.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:05] Adam: You can’t tell now.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:06] Adam: We’re kind of in this cloud.
[0:39:07 – 0:39:08] Adam: You can’t see what it’s doing.
[0:39:08 – 0:39:09] Adam: It’s just gray.
[0:39:09 – 0:39:11] Adam: There’s not really any wind.
[0:39:11 – 0:39:15] Adam: It’s just hanging over us now, and you don’t know what’s around the corner.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:16] Erik: Right.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:20] Erik: The goal does still exist to get to town today.
[0:39:20 – 0:39:23] Adam: Yeah, that would be nice to at least get up to town and back.
[0:39:23 – 0:39:27] Erik: Yeah, the Cherokee Loop is maybe fading in…
[0:39:27 – 0:39:29] Adam: It’s probably off the map at this point.
[0:39:29 – 0:39:35] Erik: …in potential, considering the storm we are weathering right now.
[0:39:37 – 0:39:45] Erik: But regardless, a day spent, or even an hour spent, under the canoe in the woods…
[0:39:47 – 0:39:51] Erik: beats an hour spent pretty much anywhere else, if you ask me.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:53] Erik: Am I right?
[0:39:53 – 0:39:54] Erik: 100%.
[0:39:56 – 0:40:23] Adam: another beats a day a good a bad day in the woods beats the best day in the office am i right they used to say that about fishing right and now like i can’t catch fish anymore so i’m i’m starting to doubt that statement but just being out paddling and hanging out in the park is definitely true yeah getting to watch that storm roll in that was crazy getting disappointed with skunking after skunking for i i can’t even fathom how bad i’ve gotten at fishing but
[0:40:23 – 0:40:27] Adam: I’m not sure that a day spent fishing is better than anything else.
[0:40:31 – 0:40:33] Adam: Hanging out under a canoe, listening to the thunder go by.
[0:40:35 – 0:40:37] Adam: Wouldn’t trade that for anything.
[0:40:38 – 0:40:39] Erik: Not so bad.
[0:40:41 – 0:40:42] Erik: We’ll leave the rambling for now.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:44] Erik: Check back in.
[0:40:46 – 0:40:46] Erik: Town.
[0:40:49 – 0:40:49] Erik: Hopefully next.
[0:40:51 – 0:40:57] Erik: We might be checking in from Jockmock Point if the weather persists.
[0:40:58 – 0:41:03] Erik: I’m assuming that the thunder is being picked up on the microphone.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:08] Erik: It’d be a damn shame if it wasn’t, because…
[0:41:08 – 0:41:15] Adam: It’ll be interesting when we get back to camp to ask Natalie and Cheyenne how this went through over there.
[0:41:15 – 0:41:17] Adam: I mean, we’re quite a ways down the lake now.
[0:41:17 – 0:41:18] Adam: We’re probably four miles out.
[0:41:19 – 0:41:23] Adam: So it could be a whole different story down there, but it sure seemed like it was heading down the lake.
[0:41:23 – 0:41:27] Adam: So it probably would hit us is also then hitting them.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:27] Erik: Yeah.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:47] Adam: it’ll be interesting to see how our stories compare as to how this storm went because i know they were a little worried about chance of storms today when we left it looked like there maybe was something down there but yeah as we moved down the lake it became more and more apparent that we’re paddling right into something yeah we were paddling straight into it two canoes were going
[0:41:48 – 0:42:13] Erik: down the lake to the east and heading out into the big part of the lake i hope they were able to make i hope they got across or turned back or i don’t know got to at least close to shore although it’s only seemed like mostly a rain event with thunder in the clouds we did see some pretty like wind whipping across the lake though right when it was first coming in like we were both said like i’m glad we’re not out there now
[0:42:15 – 0:42:19] Adam: It looked like real extreme gusts coming out of the west as this moved in.
[0:42:19 – 0:42:23] Adam: I really hope they did get somewhere close to shore and got off the water.
[0:42:23 – 0:42:27] Erik: If you’re out there, group of five, we saw you.
[0:42:27 – 0:42:28] Adam: With the hefty boy in the back.
[0:42:30 – 0:42:34] Erik: That poor three-man canoe was like literally two inches above the water in the back.
[0:42:34 – 0:42:36] Adam: It was a real big feller in the back.
[0:42:37 – 0:42:38] Erik: Yeah, there was not much room.
[0:42:39 – 0:42:43] Erik: Any of the waves that we saw picked up, they were probably taking on a little bit of water in the back.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:44] Erik: But…
[0:42:46 – 0:42:50] Erik: Yeah, boy, it has really just settled into a rainy day.
[0:42:50 – 0:42:52] Erik: Yeah, wish I had a rain jacket.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:54] Erik: Dang.
[0:42:54 – 0:42:59] Erik: Adam and Eric, Boundary Waters experts, out here hunkered under a canoe.
[0:42:59 – 0:43:00] Adam: No rain gear.
[0:43:00 – 0:43:01] Erik: No rain gear.
[0:43:02 – 0:43:02] Erik: Bag of wine.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:05] Erik: Yeah, we got the most important thing.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:06 – 0:43:12] Erik: We had the most important piece of equipment episode, and it was established that it was a bag of wine.
[0:43:12 – 0:43:13] Adam: So there you go.
[0:43:13 – 0:43:13] Adam: Proof.
[0:43:13 – 0:43:15] Adam: The proof is in the bag of wine.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:16] Adam: Yep.
[0:43:17 – 0:43:19] Adam: That’s what they should be saying instead of pudding.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Adam: Like, who the hell eats pudding anymore?
[0:43:20 – 0:43:23] Adam: The last time I ate pudding was back when I was growing up.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:34] Adam: The Pizza Hut in Manitowoc, Wisconsin had a lunch buffet, so I’d get six plates of pizza, and then the seventh plate I’d go back and just load it full of chocolate pudding.
[0:43:34 – 0:43:35] Adam: And that was probably the last time I ate pudding.
[0:43:36 – 0:43:38] Adam: What kind of an adult eats pudding anyways?
[0:43:38 – 0:43:40] Adam: Why is there proof in the pudding?
[0:43:40 – 0:43:43] Adam: You’re not proofing it like a rising bread dough either.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:45] Adam: That statement makes no sense, in fact.
[0:43:46 – 0:43:48] Adam: We should really unpack this on future episodes.
[0:43:48 – 0:43:50] Adam: But really, let’s just change it from now on.
[0:43:50 – 0:43:52] Adam: The proof is not in the pudding.
[0:43:52 – 0:43:53] Adam: The proof is in the bag of wine.
[0:43:53 – 0:43:54] Adam: You don’t get the alliteration.
[0:43:55 – 0:43:57] Adam: But it’s truer.
[0:43:57 – 0:43:59] Adam: It rings truer, and it is truer.
[0:43:59 – 0:44:00] Adam: So I’m going with it.
[0:44:00 – 0:44:01] Erik: All right.
[0:44:01 – 0:44:01] Adam: The proof.
[0:44:02 – 0:44:03] Erik: Let’s change this, folks.
[0:44:03 – 0:44:04] Erik: It’s official.
[0:44:04 – 0:44:07] Erik: At least a few hundred people will start saying the proof is in the bag of wine.
[0:44:07 – 0:44:08] Adam: And we have it.
[0:44:08 – 0:44:08] Adam: Where is it?
[0:44:09 – 0:44:09] Adam: I see it.
[0:44:09 – 0:44:10] Adam: It’s right there.
[0:44:11 – 0:44:14] Erik: I’m surprised the bugs aren’t worse under here.
[0:44:14 – 0:44:17] Adam: Well, right when we pulled in, I mean, yeah, there’s not really wind.
[0:44:17 – 0:44:21] Adam: And right when we pulled in, all of a sudden we were in the mosquitoes pretty bad, but they’ve kind of peeled out.
[0:44:21 – 0:44:22] Adam: They went with the birds.
[0:44:23 – 0:44:26] Adam: Yeah, they flew with the birds towards the other end of the lake.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:35] Erik: Yeah, when we started recording, it was like literally like flocks of birds were like fleeing the area.
[0:44:35 – 0:44:36] Adam: That’s never a good sign.
[0:44:36 – 0:44:37] Adam: Come here.
[0:44:37 – 0:44:38] Adam: Jesus, what is she doing?
[0:44:38 – 0:44:47] Erik: That’s like always the first sign of like, you know, any movie, like a doomsday movie, always starts with like the animals and birds fleeing.
[0:44:50 – 0:44:55] Erik: Why did my dog just bounce up from a peaceful nap and run in the opposite direction?
[0:44:56 – 0:45:00] Erik: Have you ever seen that video of the dog?
[0:45:00 – 0:45:09] Erik: It was an office building, and it’s like an in-office recording security video.
[0:45:09 – 0:45:10] Erik: It’s a guy.
[0:45:10 – 0:45:11] Erik: He’s just sitting at a desk.
[0:45:12 – 0:45:13] Erik: And there’s a dog.
[0:45:14 – 0:45:15] Adam: In the office?
[0:45:15 – 0:45:16] Erik: Yeah, in the office with him.
[0:45:17 – 0:45:20] Erik: And it’s the video from…
[0:45:21 – 0:45:23] Erik: I think it was the earthquake in Japan.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:25] Erik: It might be one on the West Coast.
[0:45:26 – 0:45:27] Erik: I can’t say for sure.
[0:45:27 – 0:45:28] Erik: It’s an earthquake video.
[0:45:28 – 0:45:29] Erik: It’s an earthquake video.
[0:45:29 – 0:45:32] Erik: And this dog is just laying next to a desk.
[0:45:32 – 0:45:35] Erik: And, like, no joke, like…
[0:45:36 – 0:45:57] Erik: five like clear seconds before anything even happened this dog just bolted from a laying down position and sprinted out of the room and then the whole place just started like shaking wildly and like crazily and everything like things were toppling over and this dog like knew well in advance into a door frame
[0:45:58 – 0:45:59] Adam: or underneath a desk or something.
[0:45:59 – 0:46:01] Adam: That would be truly impressive.
[0:46:01 – 0:46:05] Erik: I don’t think it was heeding, like, you know, like, government warnings.
[0:46:06 – 0:46:06] Adam: Government knows best.
[0:46:06 – 0:46:07] Erik: Yeah.
[0:46:07 – 0:46:12] Erik: No, I think it just sensed it, and it was crazy, like, how fast it just, like, all right, I’m out.
[0:46:13 – 0:46:13] Erik: I don’t know where it went.
[0:46:14 – 0:46:15] Erik: It just bolted off screen.
[0:46:15 – 0:46:20] Erik: But it was, like, the guy was, like, the guy had enough time in the video to, like, look up and be like, what?
[0:46:21 – 0:46:24] Erik: And then, like, the earthquake started.
[0:46:24 – 0:46:25] Erik: So, like, what sense is that?
[0:46:26 – 0:46:29] Erik: Would you equate that to a sense that…
[0:46:29 – 0:46:30] Adam: Magnetic disturbance?
[0:46:31 – 0:46:31] Erik: Yeah.
[0:46:31 – 0:46:35] Adam: Some sort of super quiet…
[0:46:35 – 0:46:36] Adam: It’s probably something with hearing, right?
[0:46:37 – 0:46:38] Adam: Or is it a smell?
[0:46:38 – 0:46:38] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:46:38 – 0:46:40] Adam: Dogs have an incredible sense of smell.
[0:46:40 – 0:46:41] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:46:41 – 0:46:42] Adam: Do you smell an earthquake coming?
[0:46:42 – 0:46:45] Erik: So, like… Now she’s digging.
[0:46:46 – 0:46:48] Erik: Digging and throwing the dirt at us.
[0:46:48 – 0:46:48] Adam: Thanks.
[0:46:49 – 0:46:51] Erik: Yeah, like we’re already dirty enough.
[0:46:52 – 0:46:53] Erik: But along those lines, like Ayla…
[0:46:56 – 0:47:02] Erik: She will get freaked out, like, 20 to 30 minutes before a thunderstorm even arrives.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:06] Erik: Like, she would have been on edge this morning in camp.
[0:47:06 – 0:47:06] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[0:47:08 – 0:47:10] Erik: Is she under your porch right now, probably?
[0:47:10 – 0:47:10] Erik: Oh, I’m sure.
[0:47:11 – 0:47:13] Erik: Like, this is the worst kind of weather for her.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:15] Erik: She hates rain.
[0:47:16 – 0:47:22] Erik: And she hates, like, this kind of thunder where it’s just, like, it’s not, like, one big crack.
[0:47:22 – 0:47:26] Erik: It’s, like, just a constant, ominous rumbling from above.
[0:47:29 – 0:47:36] Erik: But we’ll be in the annex and she will just all of a sudden like be pacing and panting.
[0:47:37 – 0:47:39] Erik: And you’re like, oh, it’s going to rain in a little bit.
[0:47:40 – 0:47:41] Erik: Like, what is that?
[0:47:41 – 0:47:44] Erik: Like, I think that’s like the same thing that the earthquake.
[0:47:44 – 0:47:46] Adam: Yeah, we were talking about weather apps before.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:50] Adam: We just need to get an app that like, you know, hook them up to some dogs.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:52] Adam: And then when they start acting weird, it sends you an alert.
[0:47:53 – 0:47:54] Erik: Hey, alert.
[0:47:54 – 0:47:55] Erik: Dogs are acting weird.
[0:47:55 – 0:47:56] Erik: Seek shelter.
[0:47:57 – 0:47:58] Adam: That could work.
[0:47:59 – 0:47:59] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:47:59 – 0:48:01] Adam: I’m going to go with it’s probably a hearing thing.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:08] Adam: They can hear this subsonic rumble of plates about to snap, and then that’s what’s setting them off.
[0:48:08 – 0:48:15] Adam: It’s either hearing or smell, and I really doubt that earthquakes smell, unless there’s some sort of gas released from the earth.
[0:48:16 – 0:48:18] Adam: The earth just farts a little.
[0:48:18 – 0:48:21] Adam: Right before an earthquake, it just lets out a little…
[0:48:22 – 0:48:44] Adam: almost indiscernible detectable but only to a dog that they can smell that earthquake fart inside an office building yeah that’s pretty impressive i’m gonna go that’s definitely sound it’s gotta be like a pressure thing or it could be like yeah it’s like the lateral line on a fish like they can just sense like i don’t know this barometric shift yeah it’s like the uh the thermostat in the car
[0:48:45 – 0:48:51] Erik: which is like made of wax, and when it reaches a certain consistency, that’s how it adjusts the temperature.
[0:48:51 – 0:49:01] Erik: So for like a dog, they probably have things in their ear that kind of adjusts preemptively compared to…
[0:49:02 – 0:49:02] Erik: You know, a human.
[0:49:03 – 0:49:08] Erik: But, you know, we have radar, like literally internet radar that we can check.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:12] Adam: I wish we could see the radar of what just went over us or what’s on us right now.
[0:49:12 – 0:49:13] Adam: It would just be interesting to see it.
[0:49:13 – 0:49:19] Adam: But as, you know, the Fact Checker Hotline guy pointed out, Paul?
[0:49:20 – 0:49:20] Adam: Pete.
[0:49:21 – 0:49:21] Erik: Pete.
[0:49:21 – 0:49:21] Adam: Pete.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:27] Adam: As Pete pointed out, you know, when you’re in the Boundary Waters, you don’t have access to Google or Hindsight.
[0:49:28 – 0:49:30] Adam: And so best not to question it.
[0:49:31 – 0:49:33] Adam: Our best radar right now is our eyes and ears.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:38] Adam: And, yeah, it’s kind of not telling us anything right now.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:40] Adam: It just looks like it’s going to do this all day.
[0:49:40 – 0:49:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:43] Adam: It’s going to do this for the rest of my life, actually.
[0:49:43 – 0:49:44] Adam: I can tell right now.
[0:49:44 – 0:49:47] Adam: There’s just indiscernible gray in every direction.
[0:49:47 – 0:49:48] Adam: Plain gray.
[0:49:48 – 0:49:50] Adam: Plain, flat gray, no motion.
[0:49:51 – 0:49:51] Adam: Steady rain.
[0:49:51 – 0:49:54] Adam: Steady rain and thunder all around.
[0:49:54 – 0:49:56] Erik: And every 30 seconds it thunders.
[0:49:56 – 0:50:02] Erik: So it’s basically impossible to consider getting back in a canoe and doing anything.
[0:50:02 – 0:50:04] Adam: So we’re kind of just waylaid here.
[0:50:05 – 0:50:08] Erik: The majority of this episode is just going to be recorded under a canoe.
[0:50:10 – 0:50:10] Adam: That’s fine.
[0:50:11 – 0:50:20] Adam: As you said before, how many podcasts have ever been recorded under a canoe out on the west end of Brule by people who are just stuck in the rain?
[0:50:20 – 0:50:20] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:50:21 – 0:50:22] Adam: It’s a good thing we have the field recorder.
[0:50:23 – 0:50:26] Adam: We’re making podcasts while the rain flies.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:31] Adam: It’s the complete opposite of making hay when the sun shines.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:35] Erik: Making podcasts when the rain flies.
[0:50:35 – 0:50:37] Adam: You got to have the yang to your yang.
[0:50:38 – 0:50:39] Adam: You’re the yang.
[0:50:39 – 0:50:39] Adam: I’m the yang.
[0:50:40 – 0:50:42] Adam: The sun is the yang and the rain is the yang.
[0:50:42 – 0:50:45] Adam: It’s all connected and it’s all interwoven.
[0:50:45 – 0:50:46] Adam: Everything in nature is.
[0:50:46 – 0:50:51] Erik: So we’ve got make podcasts when the rain flies.
[0:50:51 – 0:50:52] Erik: Right.
[0:50:52 – 0:50:55] Erik: And write as a bag of wine.
[0:50:55 – 0:50:56] Erik: Oh, no.
[0:50:56 – 0:50:57] Erik: The proof is in the bag of wine.
[0:50:57 – 0:50:58] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:58 – 0:51:00] Adam: How about we can shorten that to just the proof is in the wine?
[0:51:00 – 0:51:01] Erik: Proof is in the wine.
[0:51:01 – 0:51:02] Erik: So we’ve got two things.
[0:51:02 – 0:51:14] Erik: By the end of this rain session, we should be able to have you all set up with at least two or three turns of phrase.
[0:51:14 – 0:51:15] Erik: What a lovely turn of phrase.
[0:51:16 – 0:51:18] Adam: People will say that to you all the time when you say it, then.
[0:51:18 – 0:51:19] Adam: You can introduce them.
[0:51:19 – 0:51:21] Adam: Let’s just take this thing global.
[0:51:21 – 0:51:22] Adam: Global?
[0:51:22 – 0:51:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:23 – 0:51:23] Adam: The proof.
[0:51:23 – 0:51:24] Adam: Global.
[0:51:25 – 0:51:28] Adam: The proof of the power of the podcast is really in the wine.
[0:51:37 – 0:51:43] Erik: Are you living a life of comfort and ease, sitting on the couch, watching TV?
[0:51:44 – 0:51:45] Erik: Have you never felt pain?
[0:51:46 – 0:51:52] Erik: Well, do we have the solution for you?
[0:51:52 – 0:51:55] Erik: If you would like to know what a broken ankle feels like,
[0:51:57 – 0:51:58] Erik: Head up to Town Lake.
[0:51:59 – 0:52:05] Erik: Just an easy four portages in off of Brule in the North Country.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:06] Erik: Come on down.
[0:52:06 – 0:52:08] Erik: We’re breaking ankles this weekend.
[0:52:08 – 0:52:11] Erik: 50% off, and we’ll see you.
[0:52:13 – 0:52:15] Erik: I slid on a bunch of mud and fell on my butt.
[0:52:16 – 0:52:16] Adam: It was great.
[0:52:17 – 0:52:18] Erik: That’s a guarantee.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:24] Erik: By one broken ankle, get the second free.
[0:52:29 – 0:52:29] Erik: All right.
[0:52:31 – 0:52:33] Erik: We made it up on town.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:40] Erik: Having a little midday break.
[0:52:41 – 0:52:41] UNKNOWN: Lunch.
[0:52:42 – 0:52:44] Erik: Got out of the waylay camp.
[0:52:45 – 0:52:49] Erik: Made our way up through Cam, Gasket, Vesper.
[0:52:49 – 0:52:52] Erik: We are now on the single campsite on town.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:54] Adam: Got the whole dang lake to ourselves.
[0:52:56 – 0:52:56] Erik: One word.
[0:52:56 – 0:53:01] Erik: How would you describe the portages between Brule and town?
[0:53:01 – 0:53:02] Erik: They’re lousy.
[0:53:03 – 0:53:04] Erik: Lousy.
[0:53:04 – 0:53:06] Adam: That’s a double entendre.
[0:53:06 – 0:53:06] Adam: They’re lousy as hell.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:09] Adam: They’re really slick and muddy and really poor footing.
[0:53:10 – 0:53:11] Adam: Also, they remind me of the Laos River.
[0:53:13 – 0:53:13] Adam: Double Laos.
[0:53:14 – 0:53:16] Erik: How would you describe the lakes?
[0:53:17 – 0:53:17] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:53:17 – 0:53:18] Adam: They’re gorgeous.
[0:53:18 – 0:53:22] Adam: They’re totally worth the lousy portaging to get to them.
[0:53:22 – 0:53:22] Adam: Really cool.
[0:53:22 – 0:53:23] Adam: Very small and…
[0:53:24 – 0:53:28] Adam: Real beautiful hills, rock structure.
[0:53:30 – 0:53:34] Adam: Pretty unusual to see that kind of like cliffs on such a small lake on all of them.
[0:53:36 – 0:53:39] Adam: Now we’re back on town here, and we’re looking a little bit more like a normal lake.
[0:53:40 – 0:53:41] Adam: But yeah, we’re going through there.
[0:53:41 – 0:53:44] Adam: It’s kind of a magical little ravine you’re traveling through.
[0:53:44 – 0:53:47] Adam: It was raining the whole time.
[0:53:47 – 0:53:53] Adam: The portages are really overgrown, so we went from wet to soaked immediately, and we’re still wet.
[0:53:53 – 0:53:54] Adam: I don’t think we ever will dry out today.
[0:53:55 – 0:53:56] Erik: No, not with the humidity.
[0:53:57 – 0:54:01] Adam: So we were originally talking when we were way late, maybe we’ll just go up to town and then back.
[0:54:02 – 0:54:06] Adam: But now that we’re up here, it’s like I don’t really want to go through those partridges again.
[0:54:07 – 0:54:09] Adam: I’ve seen it once, and I don’t like to just do out and backs.
[0:54:09 – 0:54:10] Adam: I like to do loops.
[0:54:10 – 0:54:13] Adam: So now we’re here, and it looks like it might be clearing out here.
[0:54:13 – 0:54:14] Adam: What do you think?
[0:54:14 – 0:54:16] Erik: It looks like some blue skies off to the west.
[0:54:17 – 0:54:21] Adam: North and west of us is looking a little blue, and the wind isn’t so bad.
[0:54:21 – 0:54:29] Adam: So I think at this point we’re going to just snack ourselves up here and push on around to Cherokee, and we’ll start heading our way back.
[0:54:29 – 0:54:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:54:30 – 0:54:33] Adam: Yeah, we got a ways to go back to camp.
[0:54:33 – 0:54:35] Adam: Be nice to get back and do a little fishing tonight.
[0:54:35 – 0:54:37] Adam: But yeah, I don’t know.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:39] Adam: I’m feeling pretty good about the day right now.
[0:54:39 – 0:54:43] Erik: Yeah, so am I. I think the morning started out quite ominous.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:50] Erik: Didn’t know what the day would bring after the wall cloud fell in on us like that.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:57] Erik: But we are about halfway, a little under halfway around the Cam Town Cherokee Temperance Loop.
[0:54:58 – 0:55:01] Adam: Yeah, but we’ve done the most difficult section, I feel.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:02] Erik: Oh, yeah, for sure.
[0:55:02 – 0:55:04] Erik: Those portages don’t get used.
[0:55:04 – 0:55:09] Adam: I saw one footprint on the Vesper to town, but who knows?
[0:55:09 – 0:55:11] Adam: It could have been a year old, honestly.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:19] Adam: I was expecting we were going to find moose sheds and maybe some treasure on those because we’re probably one of the only people through that one this year.
[0:55:19 – 0:55:26] Erik: I mean, there’s no campsites between Brule and town, so the only reason to do that would be just for seeing the lakes.
[0:55:26 – 0:55:27] Erik: The adventure of it.
[0:55:27 – 0:55:29] Erik: And the adventure of it is worth it.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:38] Erik: I think, besides the fact that we were basically portaging over wet, mini mountain ranges, slippery, angular…
[0:55:40 – 0:56:09] Adam: pools of water yeah and like you had the boat and the pack and i had the the husky pup and so she’s trying to pull me you know and going uphill is one thing but then trying to go down and then the footing’s real iffy so i only took one real spill but there were several other really close calls where i felt certain i was gonna go and there was one point where we’re coming into gasket and she like fell into a crevasse i thought i was gonna have to like go down there and get a crane and pull her out but she somehow jumped out of the crevasse by herself
[0:56:10 – 0:56:11] Adam: She handled it fine.
[0:56:11 – 0:56:12] Adam: She doesn’t know what we’re complaining about.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:15] Erik: There were some serious ankle breakers through there.
[0:56:15 – 0:56:20] Erik: Besides the rocks, then there were these pools where you’re like, I’ll just take a step in this pool.
[0:56:20 – 0:56:21] Erik: It looks all right.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:25] Erik: And then you’d go up to your knee in quicksand mud.
[0:56:25 – 0:56:27] Erik: And then there was a couple other spots where there was just like…
[0:56:28 – 0:56:52] Erik: logs down on the on the portage with like smaller other logs just beyond it and then in between the logs like huge holes down into the earth did you see a couple of those yes that was just insane if i had a headlamp you could you know probably look down into a gem mine or something there are trolls down there mining gems for sure what are you doing so we are uh
[0:56:53 – 0:56:55] Erik: We’re out here on the campsite on town.
[0:56:55 – 0:56:59] Erik: Arrow is mulching for future campers.
[0:56:59 – 0:57:00] Adam: Yeah, it’s really thoughtful of her.
[0:57:00 – 0:57:02] Adam: I didn’t know she was a mulching dog.
[0:57:02 – 0:57:03] Erik: Yep.
[0:57:03 – 0:57:05] Erik: So while we’re at it, let’s review this campsite.
[0:57:06 – 0:57:06] Adam: Yeah, why not?
[0:57:07 – 0:57:09] Adam: All right, so the landing is really rough.
[0:57:09 – 0:57:11] Adam: We were pulling in, and it’s just real bouldery.
[0:57:11 – 0:57:12] Adam: There’s no clear spot to land.
[0:57:14 – 0:57:15] Adam: We didn’t have really a hard time getting out.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:18] Adam: You know, the dog’s getting better at getting in and out of the boat.
[0:57:19 – 0:57:20] Adam: So that’s nice, but…
[0:57:21 – 0:57:22] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:57:22 – 0:57:27] Adam: If you actually had heavy packs in here and it was slick and wet like this right now, I wouldn’t want to be trying to do it, honestly.
[0:57:28 – 0:57:31] Adam: So I’m going to give it a C or maybe even a D. The landing’s not really good.
[0:57:31 – 0:57:31] UNKNOWN: No.
[0:57:32 – 0:57:34] Adam: But, you know, what are you going to do?
[0:57:34 – 0:57:38] Adam: It looks like there’s maybe a path down here, but I didn’t see anything obvious down that way either.
[0:57:38 – 0:57:40] Adam: So we’re going to go ahead and give it a D.
[0:57:41 – 0:57:42] Erik: I would agree with that.
[0:57:42 – 0:57:43] Erik: Pretty rough landing.
[0:57:44 – 0:57:52] Erik: It’s, I mean, you can clearly tell, you know, when we were coming up through those portages and where we are now, actually, I was saying it has a very Quetico-esque feel.
[0:57:53 – 0:57:53] Adam: Yeah, for sure.
[0:57:54 – 0:57:55] Erik: Real Canadian.
[0:57:55 – 0:57:59] Erik: Lightly used branches hanging over the portages.
[0:58:00 – 0:58:04] Erik: They didn’t really make much of an effort to avoid anything.
[0:58:04 – 0:58:08] Erik: It was just like, yeah, this is the shortest path between the two lakes, and it goes this way.
[0:58:09 – 0:58:19] Erik: Not like some of the boundary water portages that will go around things or try to avoid a hill or a river or a creek or whatever.
[0:58:20 – 0:58:22] Erik: But this seems like a pretty quiet campsite.
[0:58:23 – 0:58:23] Erik: Rough landing.
[0:58:24 – 0:58:27] Erik: Relatively unused.
[0:58:28 – 0:58:29] Erik: Campsite?
[0:58:29 – 0:58:32] Adam: The campsite is nice and open now that we’re sitting up here.
[0:58:33 – 0:58:34] Erik: Hammock potential forever.
[0:58:34 – 0:58:36] Adam: You’ve got a lot of jack pine in here.
[0:58:36 – 0:58:37] Adam: Holy moly.
[0:58:37 – 0:58:38] Adam: There’s a lot of jack pine.
[0:58:38 – 0:58:40] Adam: You’ve got a lot of openings.
[0:58:40 – 0:58:43] Adam: You could at least get a dozen hammocks, nine hammocks tops in here.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:46] Adam: And the fire grate.
[0:58:46 – 0:58:50] Erik: There’s a little L-shaped log set up here.
[0:58:50 – 0:58:52] Adam: This is a more modern looking fire grate.
[0:58:53 – 0:58:54] Adam: You could definitely do a pizza biter.
[0:58:54 – 0:58:56] Adam: This is pizza biter certified.
[0:58:57 – 0:58:57] Adam: Pizza biters.
[0:59:00 – 0:59:02] Adam: And we got a couple of decent benches here.
[0:59:02 – 0:59:03] Adam: I like this double bench I’m on.
[0:59:03 – 0:59:04] Adam: That’s pretty comfy.
[0:59:05 – 0:59:05] Adam: It’s a nice butt groove.
[0:59:05 – 0:59:10] Adam: I think the most distinctive feature is the two manicured tent pads back here.
[0:59:11 – 0:59:13] Adam: Somebody’s, like, placed rocks in a line.
[0:59:14 – 0:59:17] Adam: Well, it kind of levels out the land behind it.
[0:59:17 – 0:59:20] Adam: It’s almost like a little terraced tent pad.
[0:59:20 – 0:59:21] Adam: There’s two of them.
[0:59:22 – 0:59:22] Adam: One, two.
[0:59:22 – 0:59:26] Adam: One for a small tent, and you can get a really nice-sized tent back there, and it’s really nice and flat.
[0:59:26 – 0:59:27] Adam: Yeah.
[0:59:27 – 0:59:29] Adam: No arguments on the tent pads.
[0:59:29 – 0:59:30] Adam: The hammocks are great.
[0:59:30 – 0:59:33] Adam: So overall, the site is pretty nice.
[0:59:33 – 0:59:34] Adam: The landing’s rough.
[0:59:34 – 0:59:35] Adam: It’s tough to get here.
[0:59:35 – 0:59:43] Adam: But, you know, like Bologna or many other lakes you can name where you’re the only one on this lake.
[0:59:43 – 0:59:45] Adam: If you get this campsite, this is your town.
[0:59:45 – 0:59:47] Adam: You’re the mayor of this town.
[0:59:47 – 0:59:49] Erik: That’s great.
[0:59:49 – 0:59:50] Adam: I didn’t even think of that.
[0:59:52 – 0:59:54] Adam: Elected to a second term.
[0:59:54 – 0:59:56] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[0:59:56 – 0:59:57] Adam: So?
[0:59:58 – 1:00:00] Adam: Overall, what do you think, Arrow?
[1:00:01 – 1:00:02] Adam: Arrow?
[1:00:02 – 1:00:03] Adam: Got good logs for chewing on?
[1:00:05 – 1:00:05] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:00:05 – 1:00:07] Erik: It’ll be nicely mulched by the next time somebody gets here.
[1:00:07 – 1:00:08] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:09 – 1:00:09] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:00:09 – 1:00:10] Adam: I’ll give it a B.
[1:00:11 – 1:00:13] Erik: B. I would C. C plus?
[1:00:14 – 1:00:15] Adam: B.
[1:00:15 – 1:00:16] Adam: We’re going to go with a B.
[1:00:16 – 1:00:17] Adam: Generous B just due to the solitude.
[1:00:18 – 1:00:23] Adam: It’s like bologna, uncategorized potential for remoteness and seclusion.
[1:00:23 – 1:00:26] Adam: So that bumps it up a whole grade up from the C it should get.
[1:00:26 – 1:00:29] Adam: To a B, just because it’s the only one out here and it’s pretty tough to get here.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:30] Erik: Yeah, agreed.
[1:00:30 – 1:00:36] Erik: I would say if it was on any other lake where there was other campsites and easily accessible, probably closer to a C. Right.
[1:00:36 – 1:00:42] Erik: But the fact that you are the only one on the lake gives it that little added mystique.
[1:00:43 – 1:00:43] Adam: I like it too.
[1:00:43 – 1:00:43] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:00:44 – 1:00:48] Adam: I mean, how many podcasts you listen to, you get this kind of in-depth reviews of Town Lake.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:53] Adam: I pretty much guarantee you we’re the first people to ever do a live campsite review on Town Lake.
[1:00:53 – 1:00:56] Adam: So thank you for coming along on the journey with us.
[1:00:56 – 1:01:02] Adam: We’ll probably check in from Cherokee or one of the temperances before we hit Brule again.
[1:01:02 – 1:01:03] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:01:04 – 1:01:08] Adam: If the mood strikes us, we may stop again because I feel like we are now ahead of the clock.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:11] Adam: I feel like all day we were kind of chasing the clock because we got way late early.
[1:01:12 – 1:01:13] Adam: We didn’t really get out of camp all too early.
[1:01:14 – 1:01:16] Adam: The frittata breakfast really slowed us down.
[1:01:16 – 1:01:22] Adam: You know, we were just sitting here, and I just got, like, a nice, like, a retaste of the dill from the frittata this morning, so…
[1:01:23 – 1:01:27] Adam: You know, we’ve kind of, this is the high point of the trip.
[1:01:27 – 1:01:32] Adam: Uh, you know, we’re, we’re on our way, turning our way back now towards home, even though we kind of got to go around on Cherokee.
[1:01:33 – 1:01:35] Adam: It’s five more portages back to Brule.
[1:01:36 – 1:01:42] Adam: I feel like it’s going to be an easier run back to Brule going around through Cherokee than if we were to, you know, just go back through Vesper.
[1:01:42 – 1:01:44] Adam: I can’t imagine actually going back that way.
[1:01:44 – 1:01:50] Adam: I would literally go, I would go 10 more portages around than to go back on those last four.
[1:01:51 – 1:01:53] Adam: That’ll tell you something about how difficult those were.
[1:01:53 – 1:01:53] Adam: Cause I don’t,
[1:01:53 – 1:01:54] Adam: We don’t even really have packs.
[1:01:54 – 1:01:56] Adam: I mean, I just have a puppy and the canoe, and that’s it.
[1:01:57 – 1:02:07] Erik: Yeah, and we were wondering if we would be able to do it, but we will get the Cherokee feel, the 4th of July low.
[1:02:07 – 1:02:15] Erik: We should be able to make some assumptions, some suggestions on that based on… What we see out there.
[1:02:16 – 1:02:19] Erik: Yeah, there are a number of campsites.
[1:02:19 – 1:02:21] Erik: Just looking at it right now, I’m not even going to count.
[1:02:21 – 1:02:25] Erik: It looks like probably close to 20 campsites on that dang lake.
[1:02:25 – 1:02:26] Erik: At least.
[1:02:26 – 1:02:27] Erik: Jeez.
[1:02:27 – 1:02:31] Erik: And I’m glad we’ve got a campsite set up so we can just blast on through there.
[1:02:32 – 1:02:39] Erik: and wave at all the boy Scouts and, uh, hopefully, uh, not run into any headwinds on the way back.
[1:02:40 – 1:02:40] Erik: We’ll check in with you.
[1:02:41 – 1:02:41] Adam: Yeah, I know.
[1:02:41 – 1:02:42] Adam: It’s a wind.
[1:02:42 – 1:02:44] Adam: The wind’s pretty negligible right now.
[1:02:44 – 1:02:53] Adam: I would be surprised if wind becomes a factor at all today, but if it stays out of the South, once we get back to Brule, we can just hug the South shore until we get to back to the old Jacques and Mark.
[1:02:54 – 1:03:00] Adam: And, um, hopefully Natalie and Cheyenne are not too worried about the thunder and have those Cubans ready for us when we get back.
[1:03:00 – 1:03:01] Adam: And then, uh,
[1:03:02 – 1:03:04] Adam: Then we’re going to light up with a cribbage tournament when we get back, are we not?
[1:03:05 – 1:03:05] Erik: We are.
[1:03:05 – 1:03:12] Erik: We’ll keep you updated on our progress today, and we will most definitely keep you updated to the results of the cribbage tournament.
[1:03:12 – 1:03:14] Erik: That’s a hot ticket item.
[1:03:14 – 1:03:14] UNKNOWN: Woo!
[1:03:16 – 1:03:17] Erik: See ya.
[1:03:17 – 1:03:19] UNKNOWN: All right, well.
[1:03:29 – 1:03:35] Erik: We are mostly done with the loop out on the west end of Brule.
[1:03:37 – 1:03:43] Erik: Still 25, 30 fingers worth of light left in the day.
[1:03:43 – 1:03:46] Adam: It will be interesting to see what time it is when we get back.
[1:03:46 – 1:03:48] Adam: We didn’t bring any time piecing.
[1:03:48 – 1:03:49] Adam: We have no idea what time it is.
[1:03:50 – 1:03:55] Adam: But just based on the sun now being out, it looks like we still have a ridiculous amount of daylight.
[1:03:55 – 1:03:57] Adam: We think we left at 10 or 1030-ish.
[1:03:58 – 1:03:59] Adam: But yeah, we’re not really sure.
[1:03:59 – 1:04:00] Adam: This is the way to go.
[1:04:01 – 1:04:02] Adam: We’re totally disconnected.
[1:04:02 – 1:04:03] Erik: Totally disconnected.
[1:04:03 – 1:04:04] Adam: We’re tuned in.
[1:04:05 – 1:04:21] Erik: Yes, made the call at town to not backtrack and redo the treacherous four portages to continue on and do the five easies through Cherokee, North and South Temperance.
[1:04:21 – 1:04:23] Adam: This is a really nice spot right here.
[1:04:23 – 1:04:28] Adam: Way down on the west end here, a brulee, where it dumps into North Temperance.
[1:04:28 – 1:04:31] Adam: There’s a nice, maybe a 15-foot drop here.
[1:04:31 – 1:04:36] Adam: A beautiful little waterfall rapids that goes down and a nice rock shelf we’re sitting on.
[1:04:37 – 1:04:39] Adam: Just having a little wine picnic.
[1:04:39 – 1:04:43] Adam: before we tackle this last four or five miles of paddling we have.
[1:04:43 – 1:04:48] Adam: But the wind is in our favor right now, or it’s negligible at best.
[1:04:49 – 1:04:53] Adam: This is going to be a really nice paddle down to camp, and we’ve got Cubanos waiting for us.
[1:04:54 – 1:04:56] Adam: Going to get down the tubes and maybe get in the lake a little bit.
[1:04:56 – 1:04:57] Adam: It should be really nice.
[1:04:57 – 1:05:03] Adam: We might even have some cold beer left if the ladies haven’t drank at all while they’re doing their makeup tutorials.
[1:05:04 – 1:05:05] Adam: Yeah, so…
[1:05:07 – 1:05:16] Erik: One of the things that we were looking forward to experiencing out here and trying to draw a conclusion on was the number of visitors.
[1:05:17 – 1:05:21] Adam: Is there really a 4th of July lull or is that a total myth?
[1:05:21 – 1:05:23] Erik: I don’t know if I can draw any conclusions for sure.
[1:05:23 – 1:05:25] Adam: It seemed like there’s a lot of people out here still.
[1:05:25 – 1:05:29] Adam: I mean, Cherokee was jam-packed, and we ran into, like, a family on the porch.
[1:05:29 – 1:05:29] Adam: They were really cool.
[1:05:31 – 1:05:33] Adam: But, yeah, I mean, there’s a lot of people out here still.
[1:05:33 – 1:05:34] Adam: But it is July.
[1:05:34 – 1:05:35] Erik: Yeah, we didn’t…
[1:05:35 – 1:05:37] Adam: It’s not like every site is full.
[1:05:37 – 1:05:46] Erik: No, no, but, like, we didn’t see anybody going up through the cam, Vesper, gasket, town loop.
[1:05:46 – 1:05:50] Erik: But as soon as we got out to Cherokee, it was like, oh, there’s a group of four aluminum canoes.
[1:05:50 – 1:05:51] Erik: That campsite’s full.
[1:05:52 – 1:05:52] Erik: That campsite’s full.
[1:05:53 – 1:05:55] Erik: Oh, there’s four canoes at that portage.
[1:05:56 – 1:05:57] Erik: And it was just like, okay.
[1:05:57 – 1:05:58] Erik: Yeah, there’s…
[1:05:58 – 1:06:00] Adam: There was a couple of sites open, but…
[1:06:00 – 1:06:01] Erik: There were a couple.
[1:06:01 – 1:06:04] Adam: It was pretty busy in Cherokee, which we kind of expected, and you called it.
[1:06:04 – 1:06:06] Adam: I mean, it’s probably going to be a bozo show.
[1:06:06 – 1:06:07] Adam: Yeah.
[1:06:07 – 1:06:08] Adam: You know, welcome to the circus.
[1:06:08 – 1:06:09] Adam: We’re having a circus.
[1:06:09 – 1:06:10] Adam: You’re having a circus.
[1:06:10 – 1:06:11] Erik: But it wasn’t too bad.
[1:06:11 – 1:06:21] Erik: I mean, like you said, you re-ran into a family, and they were on the west end of the portage between, what was it?
[1:06:21 – 1:06:22] Erik: Not Snub.
[1:06:23 – 1:06:24] Erik: Sitka.
[1:06:24 – 1:06:25] SPEAKER_02: Sitka.
[1:06:25 – 1:06:26] Erik: Sitka.
[1:06:26 – 1:06:29] Erik: Yeah, the 140 from Sitka to Cherokee.
[1:06:29 – 1:06:32] Adam: We were like, oh, who are these bozos clogging up the portage?
[1:06:32 – 1:06:34] Adam: And we get up there, and it’s like a mother and her little daughter.
[1:06:34 – 1:06:37] Adam: They’re really sweet and nice, and we actually end up talking to them a little bit.
[1:06:37 – 1:06:38] Adam: They like the dog.
[1:06:38 – 1:06:41] Adam: The little girl noticed the Bark Ranger tag on her.
[1:06:41 – 1:06:42] Adam: It was really sweet.
[1:06:42 – 1:06:42] Adam: It was heartwarming.
[1:06:43 – 1:06:44] Adam: And it was really cool to see a family out.
[1:06:44 – 1:06:45] Adam: That’s pretty far in.
[1:06:45 – 1:06:46] Adam: Yes.
[1:06:46 – 1:06:48] Adam: So great job for them.
[1:06:48 – 1:06:52] Erik: Yeah, we were talking like, yeah, they have worked way harder than we have.
[1:06:52 – 1:06:52] Erik: We’re just day tripping.
[1:06:52 – 1:06:54] Erik: We’re just day tripping.
[1:06:54 – 1:06:56] Erik: They’re hauling gear up from Baker.
[1:06:57 – 1:07:07] Erik: There’s a 240 rod portage, a 100 rod portage, and a 140 rod portage between, and then multiple shorter ones between where they put in and Cherokee.
[1:07:08 – 1:07:08] Erik: So.
[1:07:08 – 1:07:08] Erik: Yeah.
[1:07:09 – 1:07:12] Erik: Bozies or not, you earned it to be in on Cherokee.
[1:07:12 – 1:07:15] Adam: No, there’s no easy way to get to Cherokee.
[1:07:15 – 1:07:17] Adam: It’s pretty, but I don’t know.
[1:07:17 – 1:07:20] Adam: I mean, not as pretty as town.
[1:07:20 – 1:07:22] Erik: No, not as pretty as town.
[1:07:22 – 1:07:30] Erik: So, yeah, I think, yeah, let’s put a pin in the 4th of July lull discussion.
[1:07:31 – 1:07:52] Adam: no i don’t think i could say one way or another yeah i mean there was definitely sites open on cherokee we’ve we easily found a site on brulee so you know there’s something to it probably because it’s july like it should be packed out here and it’s not totally packed no so it’s there’s something to it but i’m not sure there’s a total uh the total thing i’m not saying this right
[1:07:53 – 1:07:57] Erik: I’m not ready to completely say it’s a thing, but I think it is a thing.
[1:07:57 – 1:07:58] Adam: I’m really glad.
[1:07:58 – 1:08:02] Adam: This is the first time I’ve ever been out on a 4th of July trip, and I’m really enjoying it.
[1:08:02 – 1:08:03] Adam: This has been awesome.
[1:08:03 – 1:08:06] Adam: We had the rain earlier, and now it’s hot as hell.
[1:08:06 – 1:08:07] Adam: It’s hot as heck.
[1:08:07 – 1:08:15] Adam: I’m straight up going to take off my pants and my shoes and probably even my glasses and just blind paddle this thing down Brule.
[1:08:15 – 1:08:16] Erik: I mean, I’m naked.
[1:08:16 – 1:08:16] Adam: Yeah, well…
[1:08:17 – 1:08:19] Erik: You’re looking at my wiener right now.
[1:08:20 – 1:08:21] Adam: You’re a handsome man.
[1:08:21 – 1:08:22] Adam: I can’t deny that.
[1:08:23 – 1:08:25] Adam: We’re in the prime of our lives out here.
[1:08:26 – 1:08:28] Adam: Why are you going to hide it?
[1:08:28 – 1:08:29] Adam: Blunt it if you got it.
[1:08:29 – 1:08:31] Erik: Yeah, that’s one of the beauties of the park.
[1:08:31 – 1:08:38] Erik: The other thing that we were looking forward to experiencing and seeing how it went, which I can definitely say…
[1:08:39 – 1:08:50] Erik: I have an answer to is how the pup was going to experience and handle a day trip in and out of the canoe.
[1:08:51 – 1:08:51] Adam: 20-mile day.
[1:08:52 – 1:08:54] Erik: Currently is splayed out.
[1:08:54 – 1:08:56] Erik: Basically looks like a dead dog.
[1:08:56 – 1:08:57] Adam: We worked her hard.
[1:08:58 – 1:08:58] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:59 – 1:09:03] Erik: And it was amazing to watch over the course of…
[1:09:05 – 1:09:07] Erik: six, seven, eight hours, however long we’ve been out here.
[1:09:08 – 1:09:11] Erik: Basically go from not knowing what the heck was going on.
[1:09:11 – 1:09:14] Adam: Trying to like basically have to pick her up and place her in the canoe.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:16] Adam: And she’s still like, Ooh, I don’t know about this.
[1:09:17 – 1:09:19] Adam: I brought a pocket full of treats.
[1:09:19 – 1:09:21] Adam: And so then every time we got her in the canoe, okay, here’s the treat.
[1:09:22 – 1:09:28] Adam: And so, yeah, by like the last couple of portages, you basically get the canoe in the water and she’d be like following you down there.
[1:09:28 – 1:09:33] Adam: And then as soon as you got the canoe steady, she’d be like go and hop in her little compartment and then sit there.
[1:09:33 – 1:09:51] Adam: so yeah i mean she did great i couldn’t have been happier with the way even if everything else on the day would have been terrible the way that arrow handled the this trip was an absolute dream scenario she did great and then even a couple portages back i saw her just snatch a frog right a live frog right off the portage and just down wolfed it down
[1:09:51 – 1:09:54] Erik: Yeah, pretty nice to be able to snack on the run like that.
[1:09:54 – 1:09:56] Adam: Yeah, I wish there would have been two frogs.
[1:09:57 – 1:09:59] Adam: Natalie and Cheyenne packed us a little lunch.
[1:09:59 – 1:10:01] Adam: I could have went for a frog right now.
[1:10:01 – 1:10:01] Adam: I’m a little hungry.
[1:10:02 – 1:10:04] Adam: But we got Cubanos waiting for us.
[1:10:04 – 1:10:08] Adam: They’re going to be the little carrot on the stick as we go down these last couple miles of paddling.
[1:10:09 – 1:10:10] Adam: We’re just going to have to put it in medium.
[1:10:11 – 1:10:36] Adam: and just cruise i mean i felt like both of us were really hitting our stride on the paddling on cherokee and oh we smoked cherokee oh there’s people out there just doing the little dip with their sunglasses like whoa wow wow look at them guys they’re flying yeah perfect sink yeah that uh min 2 was slicing through the wind like a knife out there so yeah finishing up four more miles down broo
[1:10:37 – 1:10:38] Erik: Home free.
[1:10:38 – 1:10:39] Erik: No more portaging.
[1:10:39 – 1:10:40] Erik: That’s nice.
[1:10:40 – 1:10:41] Erik: Yeah, we’re done portaging.
[1:10:42 – 1:10:42] Erik: Can’t wait.
[1:10:43 – 1:10:43] Adam: Yep.
[1:10:43 – 1:10:50] Adam: Can’t wait to get back to camp at this point and have some din-din, get a little swimming in, maybe even get after some fish.
[1:10:50 – 1:10:51] Adam: We’ve got plenty of daylight.
[1:10:51 – 1:10:55] Adam: We’re going to get back in plenty of time to try for some slip bar walleye action for sure.
[1:10:56 – 1:11:00] Adam: But, you know, maybe Natalie and Cheyenne already got a mess of them cleaned up and ready for us.
[1:11:00 – 1:11:03] Adam: We did leave them all the fishing rods and the fillet knife.
[1:11:03 – 1:11:05] Adam: So it might be Cubanos and fish fry.
[1:11:05 – 1:11:05] Erik: Yeah.
[1:11:06 – 1:11:07] Adam: Well, let’s find out.
[1:11:08 – 1:11:08] Adam: All right.
[1:11:08 – 1:11:09] Adam: Arrivederci.
[1:11:09 – 1:11:09] Adam: Arrivederci.
[1:11:12 – 1:11:16] UNKNOWN: Arrivederci.
[1:11:26 – 1:11:44] Erik: Well, we’re here out on the tip of the auxiliary campsite out on the tip of Jock Mock Island looking out into the great gaping maw that is the majority of Brule.
[1:11:45 – 1:11:49] Erik: And it’s rolling pretty good out of the northwest.
[1:11:49 – 1:11:52] Erik: What do you say, two, three foot rollers?
[1:11:53 – 1:11:55] Adam: I’m seeing some probably threes out here.
[1:11:55 – 1:11:57] Adam: There’s some nice sized waves.
[1:11:57 – 1:12:03] Adam: But yeah, we got pretty much the largest expanse of the lake directly in front of us here.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:07] Adam: And all that wind and distance behind it, you’re going to get that.
[1:12:08 – 1:12:13] Adam: Now, on the backside of the island where we’ve been launching and landing,
[1:12:14 – 1:12:27] Adam: because it’s kind of in the shadow of the wind there, you got some stuff curling around, but it looks a lot more manageable going out the backside, which fortunately for us is the direction we’re headed.
[1:12:28 – 1:12:30] Erik: Yeah, there’s a couple going by right now that are…
[1:12:30 – 1:12:31] Adam: I wouldn’t want to be in these.
[1:12:31 – 1:12:38] Erik: No, I think if this was what we were having to contend with, I would be potentially not going out.
[1:12:38 – 1:12:48] Erik: But I think the small stretch that we have under a mile to get to pretty much guaranteed protection should be pretty manageable.
[1:12:48 – 1:12:50] Erik: It’s going to be a straight tailwind.
[1:12:50 – 1:13:01] Erik: It’s not going to be anything like off to the side with maybe one little spot where you’ll get a combination of some north and west kind of coming together and maybe a little bit of a mess, but I think we’re going to be fine.
[1:13:02 – 1:13:07] Adam: Yeah, the real danger zone getting out of here is when we get to that next point.
[1:13:07 – 1:13:10] Adam: And once we get around it, then we’re going to be fine.
[1:13:10 – 1:13:15] Adam: But where that point and the next big island kind of funnel it all down, we got to get through that narrows.
[1:13:16 – 1:13:20] Adam: And so that’s going to be pretty big waves in there just as a tailwind.
[1:13:20 – 1:13:28] Adam: And then what you get going through that scenario is you get these like bouncing side waves coming off the point and or the island and probably at the same time.
[1:13:29 – 1:13:31] Adam: We could see a lot of different rogue waves in there too.
[1:13:31 – 1:13:38] Adam: So you just got to really keep your hips fluid and keep your shoulders over your seat as best as possible.
[1:13:38 – 1:13:41] Adam: And just kind of, it’s a good core workout being in that kind of stuff.
[1:13:41 – 1:13:42] Adam: Yeah.
[1:13:42 – 1:13:43] Adam: Engage the core.
[1:13:43 – 1:13:45] Adam: Well, yeah, we’re going to get out of here.
[1:13:45 – 1:13:49] Adam: Even if we were to go in right now, it’s the water’s pretty dang nice.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:54] Adam: So worst case scenario, we’re just going for a bonus swim, but I, we’re all pretty good paddlers here.
[1:13:54 – 1:13:56] Adam: I don’t think that’s going to be the case.
[1:13:57 – 1:13:57] Adam: Um,
[1:13:57 – 1:14:11] Adam: yeah it’s always it always is a little disconcerting when you wake up at four in the morning just a howling wind after it was dead calm when i went to bed so kind of figured this is what we’re going to be dealing with and and that is what we were dealing with but
[1:14:12 – 1:14:34] Erik: been a good trip yeah solid we uh made a nice little day trip run yesterday which would have been pretty much impossible to try today uh it would have taken us four hours just to go down to the end of brulen back in this crap yeah it’s pretty brutal out here so glad we were able to get yesterday’s trip in the conditions that we did a little uh
[1:14:35 – 1:14:40] Erik: A little nerve-wracking paddle out this morning, but, you know, it is what it is.
[1:14:41 – 1:14:46] Erik: And we will hopefully check back in with you guys next week.
[1:14:46 – 1:14:48] Erik: I don’t know if we have anything planned, but…
[1:14:50 – 1:14:54] Adam: maybe some sort of lake review after this free-form, in-the-field episode.
[1:14:54 – 1:14:56] Adam: But I had fun doing it this way.
[1:14:56 – 1:14:59] Adam: I’m excited to hear the final product on this episode.
[1:15:00 – 1:15:02] Adam: But, yeah, it’s been a lot of fun kind of just doing one.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:06] Adam: This is what it’s like to be on a trip, and pretty neat change-up.
[1:15:06 – 1:15:08] Adam: So we’ll probably get back to the regular formula next week.
[1:15:08 – 1:15:18] Adam: But, yeah, until then, you can find some pictures from this trip on our Facebook page, Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast, or on Instagram, TumbleHomeCast.
[1:15:20 – 1:15:25] Erik: We are on Instagram as well, tumblehomecasts.
[1:15:27 – 1:15:29] Erik: at gmail.com if you want to send us an email.
[1:15:29 – 1:15:41] Erik: This is like the fourth week in a row that we don’t have the Fact Checker Hotline number with us, but it is in the show notes, and we’re going to start getting better at having that number right in front of us.
[1:15:41 – 1:15:44] Erik: 218-461, and then four numbers that I don’t know what they are.
[1:15:44 – 1:15:46] Erik: But love to hear from you on there.
[1:15:46 – 1:15:49] Erik: Still brainstorming maybe some different names for that.
[1:15:50 – 1:15:54] Erik: But, yeah, thanks for hanging out with us out here in the park, in the field.
[1:15:56 – 1:15:58] Erik: As it happens, I have been Eric.
[1:15:59 – 1:15:59] Erik: I’m Adam.
[1:16:00 – 1:16:01] Erik: Happy pedaling.
[1:17:00 – 1:17:00] UNKNOWN: Thank you.
[1:17:34 – 1:17:42] Erik: I think this cup of coffee, in combination with this morning’s slurry breakfast, is going to blow the lid off of that box.
[1:17:42 – 1:17:48] Erik: Good thing we got Continental butt wipes on here.
[1:17:48 – 1:17:51] Adam: Yeah, what’s our pooper technique?
[1:17:51 – 1:17:52] Adam: This is important.
[1:17:52 – 1:17:53] Erik: Yeah, fact check us.
[1:17:53 – 1:17:54] Erik: How do you wipe your butt?
[1:17:56 – 1:17:58] Erik: Front to back.
[1:17:58 – 1:17:58] Adam: Front to back.
