Episode Transcript

[0:00:15 – 0:00:22] Erik: Welcome to 88 Double Home Boundary Writers Podcast.
[0:00:23 – 0:00:25] Erik: My name is Jim Sofa.
[0:00:26 – 0:00:33] Erik: Joined as always, at least for the last six weeks, by my fine friend and commentator, lure aficionado and expert, Terry.
[0:00:34 – 0:00:35] Adam: Terry.
[0:00:36 – 0:00:37] Adam: It’s very kind of you, Jim.
[0:00:37 – 0:00:38] Adam: Thank you.
[0:00:38 – 0:00:57] Adam: And it’s been a real pleasure to be here in Winnipeg for this last week, covering this tournament and celebrating all the progress you’ve made so far and getting hyped up for the championship matchup that’s about to conclude here this evening on Tumble Home Sports Network.
[0:00:57 – 0:00:58] Erik: Yes.
[0:00:58 – 0:00:59] Erik: Pew, pew, pew.
[0:00:59 – 0:01:02] Erik: Camped out down by the Gandhi statue by the river.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:07] Adam: Bufflin hooked us up with a propane vat of gravy.
[0:01:07 – 0:01:14] Adam: And we’ve just been down here by the confluence of the river stuffing our faces and camping out by Gandhi.
[0:01:14 – 0:01:15] Erik: Camping out by Gandhi.
[0:01:15 – 0:01:18] Adam: And yeah, it’s going to be pretty exciting this evening.
[0:01:19 – 0:01:24] Adam: Here in Winnipeg, we do have some art supplies to start this evening here in the park.
[0:01:24 – 0:01:31] Adam: And we got ourselves some California beers we’ve smuggled across the border from Lagunitas.
[0:01:32 – 0:01:36] Adam: This evening we have the Beast of Both Worlds by Coastal IPA.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:44] Adam: These are sponsored by two lures from the Little Cleo team, Mellow Yellow and Tequila Sunrise, pitched in.
[0:01:45 – 0:01:50] Adam: And Overnight Freight shipped these by air, I guess, Freight?
[0:01:50 – 0:01:51] Adam: Overnight Freight.
[0:01:52 – 0:01:59] Adam: And If The Sky, Mellow Yellow and Tequila Sunrise, thank you very much for these.
[0:01:59 – 0:02:02] Adam: They look a little scary.
[0:02:02 – 0:02:03] Adam: There’s like a beast…
[0:02:04 – 0:02:05] Adam: Destroying a bridge?
[0:02:05 – 0:02:06] Adam: Oh no.
[0:02:06 – 0:02:07] Adam: It is like a dog.
[0:02:07 – 0:02:09] Adam: A dog beast?
[0:02:12 – 0:02:12] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:12 – 0:02:40] Erik: there’s a helicopter in there is it it’s destroying the gotta be the golden gate no but it’s also destroying the brooklyn bridge too i was gonna say but he’s also got uh like the empire state building in one hand oh because it’s the bi-coastal it’s destroying two bridges and two buildings from both coasts well two bridges from the west coast a bridge and a building from the east coast is what it looks like you ever been to petaluma
[0:02:42 – 0:02:42] Erik: Nope.
[0:02:42 – 0:02:43] Erik: Would not recommend.
[0:02:43 – 0:02:43] Erik: Nope.
[0:02:43 – 0:02:44] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:02:44 – 0:02:45] Adam: Is that near Santa Barbara?
[0:02:45 – 0:02:46] Adam: Would not recommend.
[0:02:46 – 0:02:51] Erik: Except for the Lagunitas experience.
[0:02:51 – 0:02:52] Erik: Cheers, my good man.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:53] Adam: Cheers, Jim.
[0:02:57 – 0:03:08] Adam: As I said last week, I was definitely cheering for the Little Cleo team, both for sentimental value and just personally, I enjoy the Little Cleo.
[0:03:08 – 0:03:15] Adam: Those are two of my favorites, so really nice of them to send a sponsorship our way, even though they fell just short in the Final Four.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:24] Adam: Still a hell of a season for the Little Cleos, and they’ve won my heart, and now they’ve won my thirsty mouth.
[0:03:24 – 0:03:27] Adam: They’ve won your thirsty mouth.
[0:03:27 – 0:03:29] Adam: That’s a prize worth winning right there.
[0:03:30 – 0:03:32] Adam: We got another gift sent over.
[0:03:32 – 0:03:34] Adam: This was shipped to the co-op this week.
[0:03:35 – 0:03:38] Adam: It’s a strange tea box.
[0:03:39 – 0:03:39] Adam: Is this tea?
[0:03:40 – 0:03:41] Adam: We’re going to find out.
[0:03:41 – 0:03:42] Adam: It looks like tea.
[0:03:42 – 0:03:49] Erik: It looks like a tea-flavored something, whether it is a candy or actual tea.
[0:03:50 – 0:03:51] Erik: Oh, the back definitely explains it.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:53] Adam: It’s really from overseas there.
[0:03:54 – 0:03:57] Erik: You can tell by the letters.
[0:03:57 – 0:04:00] Adam: It does say and taped on the front, contains lure.
[0:04:00 – 0:04:01] Adam: Oh, it does say contains lure.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:04] Adam: This is from Admiral Gary, friend of the show.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:05] Erik: Oh, nice.
[0:04:06 – 0:04:07] Erik: Holy Christ.
[0:04:07 – 0:04:08] Adam: I really ripped it out of there.
[0:04:08 – 0:04:10] Adam: There’s real live troubles in here, guys.
[0:04:10 – 0:04:11] Adam: Lit fuse.
[0:04:11 – 0:04:12] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:04:12 – 0:04:13] Adam: Oh, no.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:13] Adam: TNT.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:18] Adam: It’s an actual stick of dynamite lure with a split ring on that thing.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:19] Erik: Damn.
[0:04:20 – 0:04:24] Adam: And it does come with a tasteful 4-inch wire leader.
[0:04:25 – 0:04:29] Adam: Just long enough so you can get that fuse lit and chuck it in the lake.
[0:04:29 – 0:04:30] Adam: Tasteful.
[0:04:30 – 0:04:31] Adam: Big red hook.
[0:04:31 – 0:04:31] Adam: What is that?
[0:04:31 – 0:04:34] Adam: A 9-aught treble?
[0:04:34 – 0:04:35] Adam: What’s this thing made out of?
[0:04:35 – 0:04:37] Adam: It looks like it was… Is this balsa?
[0:04:37 – 0:04:39] Erik: Old school Rappala balsa?
[0:04:39 – 0:04:44] Adam: It looks like he cut that by hand with a little miter saw.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:46] Adam: That TNT wick is mighty.
[0:04:47 – 0:04:48] Adam: That’s a chunky wick, Jim.
[0:04:48 – 0:04:49] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:50 – 0:05:19] Adam: that little pinch point there and this thing’s gonna snap and the fuse is even shorter my god that triple that this treble hook is insane oh boy let’s just take a quick walk down memory lane and remember the wild ride that was stick of dynamite making it all the way to the sweet 16 with that huge hook you never you know you don’t think about that as a stick of dynamite lure you just think the lure is the dynamite
[0:05:20 – 0:05:24] Adam: But a lot of people don’t know this, but it actually does come with a giant treble hook on there.
[0:05:25 – 0:05:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:05:25 – 0:05:28] Erik: And a janitor’s keychain.
[0:05:28 – 0:05:29] Adam: You really want to hook them.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:05:31 – 0:05:38] Adam: Stick of dynamite, of course, to get into that matchup against the jig and curly tail in the Sweet 16, which it ultimately lost pretty badly.
[0:05:39 – 0:05:48] Adam: To get there, of course, the famous explosive matchup in the second round, the Torpedo versus the Stick of Dynamite.
[0:05:48 – 0:05:56] Adam: That was a 5-13 seed, and they won 40-36 there, one of our closer matchups in a tournament filled with close matchups.
[0:05:57 – 0:06:04] Adam: And, of course, in the first round, that stick of dynamite took out my beloved FZ Slim 40-36 there as well.
[0:06:04 – 0:06:10] Adam: So two 40-36 wins to blast their way into the Sweet 16.
[0:06:11 – 0:06:20] Adam: And they’re falling there to the team that is now in the championship out of the East and was the champion in Cook, Minnesota.
[0:06:20 – 0:06:23] Adam: Cook, Minnesota, please stop.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:25] Erik: Please stop.
[0:06:25 – 0:06:26] Erik: Please.
[0:06:27 – 0:06:29] Erik: Please stop.
[0:06:29 – 0:06:34] Adam: Thank you, Admiral Gary, for this delightful, probably going to be a Christmas ornament piece.
[0:06:34 – 0:06:36] Adam: I don’t think I could bring myself to actually cast that.
[0:06:36 – 0:06:37] Adam: That’s too precious.
[0:06:38 – 0:06:39] Erik: That wick would break right off.
[0:06:39 – 0:06:44] Adam: We’ll put that under the Tumble Home Christmas tree next winter here.
[0:06:46 – 0:06:47] Adam: That was pretty special.
[0:06:47 – 0:06:49] Adam: This Lagunitas is pretty special, too.
[0:06:49 – 0:06:51] Adam: It’s been a thirsty day for me.
[0:06:51 – 0:06:51] Adam: It was pretty warm here.
[0:06:51 – 0:06:54] Adam: I feel like I got a touch of sun here in Winnipeg.
[0:06:54 – 0:06:59] Adam: The sun was out and got me thinking about summer.
[0:06:59 – 0:07:00] Adam: I did pick up a permit.
[0:07:01 – 0:07:07] Adam: We are going to get to, of course, the championship results, but with only one matchup, there’s a few other items on the agenda.
[0:07:07 – 0:07:11] Adam: We can just get it out of the way, and then we can do all the other things on the agenda.
[0:07:11 – 0:07:14] Adam: No, because it doesn’t flow right for my notes, Jim.
[0:07:14 – 0:07:14] Adam: All right.
[0:07:14 – 0:07:15] Adam: Throwing it out there.
[0:07:15 – 0:07:21] Adam: I was thinking about summer as I got all this sun today, and I was able to pick up a July permit for John Lake this week.
[0:07:22 – 0:07:26] Adam: And I’ve never had a John Lake permit, and I’m looking forward to that one.
[0:07:26 – 0:07:27] Adam: Three really nice sights.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:29] Adam: One a day?
[0:07:29 – 0:07:41] Adam: There’s only one a day, yeah, and I’ve been watching this three-week segment at the end of July, trying to just pluck a nice, easy permit to take the three-year-old on his first official Boundary Letters trip this summer.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:45] Adam: And John Lake’s going to suit us just fine.
[0:07:45 – 0:07:52] Adam: We can just ride our way down the riffles and pick off one of those nice sights on John Lake and swim and maybe catch a walleye.
[0:07:52 – 0:07:54] Adam: And it’s going to be glorious weather.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:56] Erik: Take a little day trip down the Royal River.
[0:07:56 – 0:07:57] Adam: Maybe we’ll go down the Royal.
[0:07:57 – 0:07:58] Adam: Who knows?
[0:07:59 – 0:08:04] Adam: Hopefully we get that site right by the portage down the Royal River and we can listen to the moving water all night.
[0:08:04 – 0:08:06] Adam: It’ll be really a nice treat.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:07] Adam: It’s a lovely spot there.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:16] Adam: Um, I was like then trying to find, there has to be an episode on the, uh, you know, on the John Lake entry point or John Lake or something.
[0:08:16 – 0:08:17] Adam: I know we’ve gone through there.
[0:08:17 – 0:08:22] Adam: I’ve never actually had a John Lake permit and I also have never camped on John Lake.
[0:08:23 – 0:08:24] Adam: Um, but, uh.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:26] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:30] Adam: I was going back to look for an episode then to just, I know we’ve talked about it.
[0:08:30 – 0:08:31] Adam: I know we reviewed those.
[0:08:31 – 0:08:36] Adam: I’m sure you have an article on the internet with pictures of all those campsites.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:38] Adam: And I couldn’t find it.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:43] Adam: And then you were speculating that maybe it had gotten pulled down for a copyright violation or something, but
[0:08:43 – 0:08:45] Erik: There’s a bunch of episodes that that has happened to.
[0:08:45 – 0:08:47] Adam: I didn’t know that we were missing episodes.
[0:08:47 – 0:08:48] Erik: We are.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:48] Erik: And we have.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:49] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:52] Erik: For the longest time was adamant that I didn’t care.
[0:08:52 – 0:08:53] Erik: And I guess I still don’t.
[0:08:54 – 0:08:54] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:54 – 0:09:00] Erik: But I don’t think I will put in a whole 16 minute versions of songs anymore.
[0:09:00 – 0:09:02] Erik: You know, I’ll probably try and not, you know.
[0:09:02 – 0:09:04] Adam: Have our work go to waste.
[0:09:04 – 0:09:08] Adam: So does Spotify just pull it off of Spotify, but it’s still on our server?
[0:09:08 – 0:09:09] Erik: Spotify pulls it off of Spotify, yeah.
[0:09:09 – 0:09:13] Adam: But if you just go to our actual website, you can still find those episodes.
[0:09:13 – 0:09:14] Adam: We don’t have a website anymore.
[0:09:14 – 0:09:17] Adam: It’s been two years since we’ve had a website.
[0:09:17 – 0:09:20] Adam: Do you not understand how RSS works still to this day?
[0:09:20 – 0:09:22] Erik: Those episodes are gone.
[0:09:22 – 0:09:23] Erik: No way.
[0:09:23 – 0:09:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:09:24 – 0:09:25] Erik: Sands of time.
[0:09:25 – 0:09:32] Adam: According to Spotify, they don’t deserve to exist because we played three minutes of a fucking Warren Zevon song.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:32] Adam: Wow.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:33] Adam: I didn’t know that.
[0:09:33 – 0:09:34] Adam: No.
[0:09:34 – 0:09:36] Adam: Anyways, this one does exist.
[0:09:36 – 0:09:40] Adam: And thank you to The White Pine for finding the John Lake episode.
[0:09:40 – 0:09:44] Adam: It was 015 Roca de Cinco Mias.
[0:09:44 – 0:09:46] Adam: What’s that mean there, Jim?
[0:09:46 – 0:09:47] Adam: It’s five mile rock.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:51] Erik: That was the episode that we paddled out to Five Mile Rock.
[0:09:51 – 0:09:53] Adam: I did download it, but I haven’t listened to it yet.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:53] Adam: Instant classic.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:55] Erik: We also reviewed John Lake.
[0:09:55 – 0:09:56] Erik: What?
[0:09:56 – 0:09:56] Erik: Really?
[0:09:56 – 0:10:03] Adam: Apparently, it just says we talk about the John Lake campsites and we dip a paddle is what the synopsis said.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:05] Adam: Well, we definitely dipped a paddle.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:05] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:06] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:07 – 0:10:09] Adam: That was the episode we paddled out to Five Mile Rock.
[0:10:09 – 0:10:10] Adam: No way.
[0:10:11 – 0:10:12] Adam: Interesting combo there.
[0:10:12 – 0:10:17] Adam: So I’m going to definitely listen to that one again for the first time in seven years.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:21] Adam: I’ll listen to it this week in preparation for that trip that’s coming up in July.
[0:10:21 – 0:10:22] Adam: That one’s still up.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:23] Adam: I love it.
[0:10:23 – 0:10:31] Erik: I just love the way that the world works where it’s like, hey, five years in the future, you’re getting audited.
[0:10:33 – 0:10:33] Erik: Or…
[0:10:34 – 0:10:46] Erik: Five years in the future, we’re going to take down some random episodes of a podcast that a thousand people listen to because you had too long of a stretch of a Van Morrison song at the back end of it.
[0:10:47 – 0:10:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:47 – 0:10:48] Adam: Cool, thanks.
[0:10:48 – 0:10:49] Adam: Don’t use those popular artists.
[0:10:49 – 0:10:49] Adam: Cool.
[0:10:49 – 0:10:49] Adam: All right.
[0:10:50 – 0:10:52] Adam: So, yeah, there’s a bunch of lost episodes now.
[0:10:52 – 0:10:53] Erik: How many do you think are lost?
[0:10:53 – 0:10:54] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:10:54 – 0:10:54] Erik: 20?
[0:10:54 – 0:10:55] Erik: No way.
[0:10:55 – 0:10:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:10:56 – 0:10:56] Erik: Huh.
[0:10:57 – 0:10:58] Adam: Well, anyways, this one’s still there.
[0:10:58 – 0:11:04] Adam: And there is another one that’s specifically about East Pike and West Pike, I believe.
[0:11:04 – 0:11:05] Erik: I mean, I can’t be that bad.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:13] Erik: For the longest time, I was just straight up flaunting the rules and playing straight up mainstream music, pretty much.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:19] Adam: But it’s also kind of funny which ones they decided to remove and which ones are like…
[0:11:19 – 0:11:20] Erik: It’s all an algorithm thing.
[0:11:20 – 0:11:21] Erik: It’s all just straight up bullshit.
[0:11:21 – 0:11:23] Erik: It’s like, hey, slow it down a little bit.
[0:11:24 – 0:11:26] Erik: Put a little two second break in it.
[0:11:26 – 0:11:28] Erik: It’s all AI looking for it.
[0:11:28 – 0:11:29] Erik: That’s why it is.
[0:11:29 – 0:11:37] Erik: Spotify has hired an AI entity to go through and scrub out all of the podcasts that they weren’t able to do with humans before.
[0:11:38 – 0:11:40] Erik: They’ve now been able to do with AI.
[0:11:41 – 0:11:43] Erik: And no matter the size of the podcasts,
[0:11:44 – 0:11:52] Erik: I guess Stevie Wonder and Jethro Tull and all these hard up artists.
[0:11:53 – 0:12:03] Erik: They really do need their full shrift for the incredible artisanal craftsmanship that went into those songs that they created 45 years ago.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:07] Erik: They still need to get their 12 cents off that.
[0:12:08 – 0:12:09] Erik: So, sorry.
[0:12:09 – 0:12:11] Erik: I knew what I was doing was wrong.
[0:12:11 – 0:12:17] Erik: And if one of the 20 episodes that got taken down was one of your favorites, send me an email.
[0:12:17 – 0:12:18] Erik: We’ll re-record it.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:19] Erik: Verbatim.
[0:12:20 – 0:12:25] Adam: See, I mean, I was just under the impression that when we record an episode, you upload it to our server.
[0:12:25 – 0:12:27] Erik: Oh, those are still there.
[0:12:27 – 0:12:29] Erik: I mean, I still have access to them.
[0:12:29 – 0:12:35] Erik: I can go back in and delete the music from them, but if I re-upload them, they will show up.
[0:12:35 – 0:12:36] Adam: And they’ll be out of order.
[0:12:36 – 0:12:37] Adam: Yeah, I mean, that’s the whole thing.
[0:12:37 – 0:12:38] Adam: Re-release them that way.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:39] Adam: Clean them up and re-release.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:41] Adam: No, probably not going to happen, but…
[0:12:42 – 0:13:04] Adam: yeah i just figured so it’s just that spotify removed the link backwards to our original file it’s not that they actually got deleted they’re still available somehow well they’re available to me they can’t just go in and delete stuff off our server that’s not how this works no they can’t do that but they can remove it from theirs yeah i’m fine with that that’s where we’re at right now we could re-release those uh just directly to the patreon
[0:13:05 – 0:13:21] Adam: sure we could do whatever we want the hidden files just play entire the entire led zeppelin 4 album on the patreon if we want it we’re gonna press them onto vinyl and re-release them only on vinyl the illegal episodes hell yeah we should do that now we’re talking jim
[0:13:22 – 0:13:40] Erik: the entire tumble home uh what would you even call it like a library it’s not a discography but just press the catalog catalog onto vinyl there we go and then seal it in a cement tomb somewhere in the woods in the vento unit
[0:13:42 – 0:13:46] Adam: Just put it down a couple of brown volcanoes.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:49] Erik: It’s going to be a lot harder to find than Dick Cheney.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:49] Erik: I can assure you that.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:52] Erik: We’re going to hide that one real good.
[0:13:52 – 0:13:56] Erik: That’s going to be cheap dancers, great, great, great grandkids who find that one.
[0:13:57 – 0:14:04] Adam: I was briefly panicked that we actually had just completely missing episodes, but they’re still out there and we can retrieve them somehow.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:05] Erik: No, they’re not out there.
[0:14:05 – 0:14:10] Adam: They’re just not out there right now to freely download onto any of your podcasting services.
[0:14:10 – 0:14:11] Erik: No, they’re gone.
[0:14:11 – 0:14:14] Erik: They’re not ever going to come back to the light of day.
[0:14:14 – 0:14:18] Erik: I feel like I will find out which one specifically.
[0:14:18 – 0:14:20] Erik: I mean, it’s not that hard.
[0:14:20 – 0:14:22] Erik: You can go back, scroll through, see what the numbers are missing.
[0:14:22 – 0:14:27] Adam: We need a list on the Tumble Home Wikipedia of the blacklisted episodes.
[0:14:27 – 0:14:28] Erik: Yeah, we’ll just re-record all of them.
[0:14:28 – 0:14:30] Adam: There we go.
[0:14:30 – 0:14:30] Adam: We are going to re-record.
[0:14:30 – 0:14:31] Erik: This has all been planned.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:39] Erik: We didn’t really have a great idea of what we were going to do for summer 2025, so I was like, we’ll just re-record the 20 episodes that Spotify took down.
[0:14:40 – 0:14:41] Adam: Perfect.
[0:14:41 – 0:14:46] Adam: Well, I did want to re-do the Clearwater episodes, and we should re-do episode one so I can be on it.
[0:14:46 – 0:14:50] Erik: That was going to be the 300th episode spectacular.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:52] Erik: It was like, redo the Clearwater episodes.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:53] Adam: Episode one.
[0:14:53 – 0:14:54] Adam: Slash episode one.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:56] Adam: But somewhere along those lines.
[0:14:56 – 0:14:57] Adam: We’re still doing that for sure.
[0:14:57 – 0:14:59] Adam: So yeah, maybe this gives us new ideas.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:08] Adam: Anyhow, I selected my permit to be picked up at Northern Goods, which is the old Stone Harbor area.
[0:15:08 – 0:15:10] Erik: Because you can’t go to the Forest Service.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:16] Adam: Well, I was debating because Northern Goods is new in town and they haven’t really been open all that much this winter.
[0:15:16 – 0:15:17] Adam: I mean, I can’t blame them.
[0:15:18 – 0:15:19] Adam: It’s not that busy.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:24] Adam: But they’re just one of them classic businesses in Grand Marais where it’s like, are they going to be open or not?
[0:15:25 – 0:15:27] Adam: You can’t count on them being open when they’re supposed to be.
[0:15:27 – 0:15:29] Adam: And yeah, it’s winter.
[0:15:29 – 0:15:33] Adam: I suppose in summer I shouldn’t have to worry about it, especially if they’re a cooperator.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:35] Adam: During permit season, they’ll pretty much have to be open, I think.
[0:15:36 – 0:15:57] Adam: but and they’re right next to the co-op so i just selected them on whatever that was wednesday morning at 8 a.m when i saw that somebody had foolishly dropped a john lake permit for july i immediately pounced on it and um yeah i selected northern goods i was like i don’t know maybe i’ll just do the forest service office now i’ll just now i’m gonna do northern goods and
[0:15:58 – 0:15:58] Adam: Hit send.
[0:15:58 – 0:15:58] Adam: All right.
[0:15:58 – 0:15:59] Adam: Got it.
[0:16:00 – 0:16:01] Adam: Email confirmed.
[0:16:02 – 0:16:07] Adam: And then it was like 12 minutes later that it was announced that the Forest Service is no longer doing permits at the Forest Service office.
[0:16:08 – 0:16:15] Adam: And at least the Kawishui and Gunplant ones, like Toftee still will issue permits.
[0:16:15 – 0:16:19] Erik: Well, Ely and Toftee, I think, are the two that are still remaining open.
[0:16:19 – 0:16:20] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:16:20 – 0:16:20] Adam: Yeah.
[0:16:21 – 0:16:24] Erik: It’s just a great system for the government.
[0:16:24 – 0:16:28] Erik: Keep kicking it to the private sector for everything.
[0:16:28 – 0:16:32] Adam: We would normally just brutalize the Forest Service for a clownish maneuver here.
[0:16:32 – 0:16:35] Adam: I don’t think the Forest Service had the call on this.
[0:16:35 – 0:16:37] Adam: I don’t think that we can really be too harsh on them this time.
[0:16:37 – 0:16:42] Adam: They basically just had their funding ripped unconstitutionally, and there’s not a whole lot they can do about it.
[0:16:43 – 0:16:46] Adam: I guess I’d also heard that they’re going to still have…
[0:16:47 – 0:17:01] Adam: six people maybe in the field on this side and i don’t know how many are going to be over on the ely side but they’re going to still have people in the field as of right now and i guess if they have to make some cuts uh then through no choice of their own um you know
[0:17:02 – 0:17:26] Adam: we’ll leave it at that but i’m glad they’re leaving i’m guess i’d choose to leave the people in the field to try and you know maintain some semblance of rule following and keeping people from totally bobbing and rexing every campsite and portage out there again like we had going on in 2020 when people were just printing their own permits and there was zero enforcement out there and it was total mayhem so right well i mean in whatever you want to say about
[0:17:28 – 0:17:55] Erik: whatever the state of the forest service and the funding and who’s out there checking to make sure people aren’t getting away with whatever people want to get away with anymore i don’t know at least it’s not it isn’t coinciding with the huge influx in numbers that was like the covid year i feel like we’re back down to like yeah we’re back down to like the normal levels
[0:17:55 – 0:18:24] Adam: they knocked down the number of permits since then too so it’s not gonna be it’s gonna be nuts like yeah there’s only one there’s a lot of them now where it’s like only one permit every other day or whatever so yeah but still i’d be nice if there was more than six people out there checking yeah i know i don’t know i mean enjoy it well alas people that’s all make sure you bring yourself a good saw that’s all we can say bring a nice saw for those portages and uh oh i thought you meant for just making like huge bonfires yeah just burn the whole thing baby
[0:18:25 – 0:18:25] Adam: No, I don’t know.
[0:18:25 – 0:18:30] Adam: Like I said, we’re going to have to all be our own force.
[0:18:30 – 0:18:33] Adam: I’m going to deputize all of you listening right now.
[0:18:34 – 0:18:40] Adam: Not that you have to step in and stop a maniac or something, but keep an eye out there.
[0:18:40 – 0:18:45] Adam: You can just do citizen’s arrest on anybody who’s being a scofflaw or not.
[0:18:45 – 0:18:47] Adam: Choose your own adventure out there.
[0:18:48 – 0:18:50] Adam: But anyways, yeah, you can’t go to the Forest Service office.
[0:18:50 – 0:18:55] Adam: So Northern Goods, I look forward to getting our permit from you.
[0:18:55 – 0:18:57] Adam: And I hope you’re open.
[0:18:58 – 0:19:01] Adam: I hope you’re ready for the, like, how many, I meant to go in there this week.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:08] Adam: I’m like Friday and just ask them, do you have any idea of how many people have switched their permits over to you since the announcement?
[0:19:09 – 0:19:12] Adam: You’re the only person in Grand Marais now issuing license.
[0:19:13 – 0:19:15] Adam: And or like anybody going up the Arrowhead.
[0:19:15 – 0:19:20] Adam: I mean, some may point out that like, yeah, most of the people coming up to hit those permits can just stop in Tofty.
[0:19:21 – 0:19:21] Adam: It’s right on your route.
[0:19:22 – 0:19:23] Erik: It’s right on your way.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:23] Erik: It’s right on your way.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:25] Erik: But like for… Not for you.
[0:19:25 – 0:19:26] Adam: Not for me.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:30] Adam: And, you know, it’s just nice to have a location or two in Grand Marais.
[0:19:30 – 0:19:32] Adam: It’s a hub of the Boundary Waters.
[0:19:32 – 0:19:34] Adam: And now it’s all falling to one community.
[0:19:35 – 0:19:51] Adam: cooperator i did make the mistake of reading like an awful facebook thread about this and of course there’s a bunch of heathens and pebble chewers on there like claiming it’s great for small business and it’s about time and all this nonsense they’ll just say anything like oh yeah no this is great too anything all this horrible shit that’s happening it’s great
[0:19:52 – 0:19:53] Adam: Everything’s great.
[0:19:53 – 0:19:54] Adam: It’s great for small business.
[0:19:54 – 0:19:56] Adam: And then immediately on there was like East Bearskin.
[0:19:56 – 0:19:58] Adam: And they’re like, we’re the first one up the Gunman Trail.
[0:19:58 – 0:20:10] Adam: And we’re like, we guarantee we’re going to be like swamped with people just showing up randomly, like demanding, like in an angry tone that we switch their permit for them and blaming us for the Forest Service budget cuts that we had nothing to do with.
[0:20:10 – 0:20:12] Adam: This is going to be a nightmare.
[0:20:12 – 0:20:20] Adam: And that was being downvoted, and then all these idiots who have probably never even paddled before are up there on the top comments about how great this is for small business.
[0:20:21 – 0:20:22] Erik: Just shut up.
[0:20:22 – 0:20:26] Erik: It probably won’t be a nightmare, but it’s not like, in my experience, I have no idea.
[0:20:27 – 0:20:28] Erik: I’m five years removed from the game.
[0:20:29 – 0:20:30] Erik: I couldn’t be happier to be out of it.
[0:20:31 – 0:20:32] Erik: Praise be.
[0:20:32 – 0:20:33] Erik: But…
[0:20:33 – 0:20:36] Erik: It’s not going to be a boon for small businesses.
[0:20:36 – 0:20:42] Erik: If these people who have had their permits set up at ranger stations now have to pick it up at an outfitter.
[0:20:42 – 0:20:44] Erik: They’re probably not doing outfitting.
[0:20:44 – 0:20:45] Erik: All they’re going to do is pick up the permit.
[0:20:45 – 0:20:47] Erik: You’re just taking up time.
[0:20:47 – 0:20:48] Adam: Exactly.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:50] Adam: Oh, they’re going to buy a lot of supplies.
[0:20:50 – 0:20:54] Erik: They’ll buy a Bungie Dealey Bob because they forgot it.
[0:20:54 – 0:20:58] Erik: They’re going to ask you where they can fill up their water bottles.
[0:20:58 – 0:21:23] Adam: yeah it’s a huge boon big boon where’s your small business owners where’s your outhouse i can defile yeah where can i fill your septic thank you yeah so i mean that’s part i mean part of the deal i’m being a cooperator i suppose but like they probably didn’t see this coming so i don’t know it’s gonna it’s not great uh you can still get a permit as of right now the boundary doors is still open i’m still waiting for that shoe to drop it’s like i’m real excited to
[0:21:24 – 0:21:34] Adam: For the Tumble Homey trip in September, Eric and I are going to do something early in the season, undetermined yet, and I’m taking my son and my wife on a first-ever trip for the little guy.
[0:21:35 – 0:21:39] Adam: And if they somehow close the park, I’ll probably have a complete nervous breakdown.
[0:21:41 – 0:21:43] Adam: Who knows what’s going to happen then?
[0:21:43 – 0:21:44] Adam: I can’t be held liable.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:47] Erik: We went into the park when they closed it during COVID.
[0:21:47 – 0:21:49] Erik: Yeah, well, for day tripping.
[0:21:49 – 0:21:51] Adam: We didn’t wink.
[0:21:52 – 0:21:54] Adam: We came out every… We didn’t stay in there.
[0:21:56 – 0:21:58] Adam: Just had to bring camouflage to hide from the planes.
[0:21:58 – 0:21:59] Adam: It’s going to be fine.
[0:22:01 – 0:22:28] Adam: but it’s not I’m pretty excited for that though for that trip in July so I’m glad I’ve been scoping for that for a long time like just checking it twice a day which is fun in it’s own way just watching the permits and seeing what’s being picked up what’s dropping what’s available and then after a while I was like I gotta give this a break like I’m just gonna not look for a week and then it was like the next week that Wednesday morning I was up before everybody else in the house and I was like you know what I’m gonna look
[0:22:29 – 0:22:35] Adam: And then there, with a ray of sunshine, came through the window and hit that spot right on my phone as I scrolled up.
[0:22:37 – 0:22:38] Erik: Ah…
[0:22:38 – 0:22:41] Adam: John Lake, where the dreams come true.
[0:22:41 – 0:22:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:22:43 – 0:22:49] Adam: Some really pretty big palisades over in that section, too.
[0:22:49 – 0:22:50] Adam: Very sweet area.
[0:22:50 – 0:22:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:22:51 – 0:22:57] Adam: And I’m looking forward to just a nice, easy, pretty much a portage-free trip into John Lake and back.
[0:22:57 – 0:22:58] Adam: It’s a good area.
[0:22:58 – 0:23:01] Adam: Thank you to whoever had plans changed and had to drop it.
[0:23:02 – 0:23:04] Adam: I was right there and ready, so got it.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:06] Erik: Least favorite lake name in the whole Vento, though.
[0:23:07 – 0:23:07] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:23:07 – 0:23:12] Adam: Yeah, there was always one back in the way back days when I was living in Wisconsin.
[0:23:13 – 0:23:18] Adam: We’d always try and do an annual trip to the Nicolet National Forest in northeast Wisconsin.
[0:23:18 – 0:23:23] Adam: And there was a series of little lakes over that area where you can just drive into them.
[0:23:23 – 0:23:27] Adam: And there’s one little campsite on each lake by the access.
[0:23:27 – 0:23:32] Adam: And it’s this sort of first-come, first-served, free campsites, 14-day minimum or maximum camp.
[0:23:33 – 0:23:36] Adam: And there was always this one lake over there called Three Johns Lake.
[0:23:37 – 0:23:37] Erik: Three Johns?
[0:23:37 – 0:23:38] Adam: I’m putting you on the map.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:40] Adam: Three Johns Lake was over there.
[0:23:40 – 0:23:45] Adam: If you guys want to go look it up, it’s, I assume, still the same setup over there near Butternut.
[0:23:45 – 0:23:49] Adam: There’s multiple Butternut Lakes, but that’s the biggest lake in that sector.
[0:23:50 – 0:23:56] Adam: It’s just like a gravel road down a gravel road down a gravel road, kind of east of Eagle River over there.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:57] Adam: So, yeah.
[0:23:57 – 0:23:58] Erik: Not one.
[0:23:58 – 0:23:59] Adam: Good luck getting it.
[0:23:59 – 0:23:59] Erik: Not two.
[0:24:00 – 0:24:01] Adam: All three of them Johnnies.
[0:24:01 – 0:24:01] Adam: Three.
[0:24:02 – 0:24:05] Adam: Yeah, every year we’re like, don’t go where the Johnnies go.
[0:24:05 – 0:24:06] Adam: Ha, ha, ha, ha.
[0:24:07 – 0:24:13] Adam: We’d, like, drag some cornhole boards back in the woods and try and always get it, but we never once got that campsite.
[0:24:13 – 0:24:14] Adam: It was always occupied.
[0:24:15 – 0:24:17] Adam: Three Johns was unattainable.
[0:24:18 – 0:24:19] Adam: So, yeah, I don’t know.
[0:24:20 – 0:24:21] Adam: Something special about that John Lake.
[0:24:21 – 0:24:22] Adam: You get Little John.
[0:24:22 – 0:24:23] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:24:23 – 0:24:25] Adam: There’s no campsites in Little John, though.
[0:24:25 – 0:24:29] Adam: You just get to enjoy Little John as you make your way to John, so…
[0:24:29 – 0:24:38] Erik: The distant smell of creosote from the Arrowhead Bridge going over the whole narrows between Little John and McFarland.
[0:24:38 – 0:24:45] Adam: The last time I was through that neck of the woods was the Grand Portage trip, which was also in July a couple years ago now.
[0:24:45 – 0:25:11] Adam: just a couple just a couple years back when we two years ago when we hoofed it over there to the goose rock and then three years ago bumped our way down the river and did the big portage so yeah we always stayed the night at that mcfarland primitive campsite right there at the landing which is a sweet option uh if you wanted to like overnight there the day before a permanent entry it’s always it’s kind of a wild west little campsite campground area and yeah we stayed there and then stayed uh
[0:25:12 – 0:25:15] Adam: at the falls and then do the Grand Portage the next day.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:17] Adam: So that was a sweet trip through there.
[0:25:19 – 0:25:23] Adam: But yeah, we won’t be doing anything like that, but we’re going to enjoy John in its own way.
[0:25:23 – 0:25:25] Erik: You’re going to do the Grand Portage with Boy?
[0:25:25 – 0:25:26] Adam: Yeah, he’ll love it.
[0:25:26 – 0:25:29] Adam: I’m going to really endear him to the park with that move.
[0:25:29 – 0:25:36] Erik: Just bludgeon his memories for never wanting to go back out into the park ever again by starting with the Grand Portage march.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:37] Erik: Daddy!
[0:25:40 – 0:25:45] Adam: One of my favorite things he says as a three-year-old is you can ask him pretty much anything, and he’ll just
[0:25:46 – 0:25:53] Adam: exasperated just be like people like why would you take me on the grand portage i’m only three people
[0:25:54 – 0:25:55] Adam: Yeah, I agree.
[0:25:55 – 0:25:58] Adam: People.
[0:25:58 – 0:26:00] Adam: I wanted to give a self-shoutout.
[0:26:00 – 0:26:08] Adam: Eric knows I have no problem self-bragging, and I wanted to give a quick self-shoutout to my new art project I’m doing on Blue Sky called Wave Station.
[0:26:09 – 0:26:11] Adam: Anybody that’s on the Discord, I’m sure, has seen this.
[0:26:12 – 0:26:17] Adam: Probably most of you are not on Blue Sky or don’t follow me on Blue Sky, and that’s acceptable.
[0:26:18 – 0:26:22] Adam: I don’t think you need a blue sky account to go see it, but I also post links to it on the discord.
[0:26:23 – 0:26:27] Adam: Uh, anytime I post new content there, uh, it’s basically a short form video.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:31] Adam: I got cap cut on my phone and I take video while I’m fishing.
[0:26:32 – 0:26:42] Adam: I’ve been bombing casts with a little Clio into the East Bay artist point and various, uh, rivers in my continued failing attempt to catch a steelhead, uh,
[0:26:43 – 0:27:06] Adam: and i’m chronicling that it’s not a fishing show um but it involves a lot of casting and a lot of waves and a bunch of other nonsense in there so i’m having fun with it uh eric what do you think of my project so far have you enjoyed it i’ve been loving it edge of my seat the whole you can put uh it’s been just about as exciting as the enemy below
[0:27:07 – 0:27:15] Adam: Yeah, the nice thing with Capco is you get one-minute song clips that are available to you, so you can just use up to one minute of most popular songs.
[0:27:15 – 0:27:22] Adam: So I’m having fun picking some music to go over the sped-up tracks of me just fishing away, catching nothing.
[0:27:23 – 0:27:27] Adam: And I know it sounds probably too exciting for most of you, but…
[0:27:27 – 0:27:44] Adam: you know check it out it’s a minute uh here and there i’m doing like three four episodes a week right now so i’m gonna keep going my goal is to get 2,222 cast in um lake trout season officially closes on lake superior on october 5th i want to say and 2,225
[0:27:47 – 0:27:52] Adam: I probably will get to 2025 or 2225.
[0:27:53 – 0:27:53] Adam: Sure.
[0:27:54 – 0:27:55] Adam: I just like all twos.
[0:27:55 – 0:28:00] Adam: But either way, if I get that many casts in by October 5th, not October fish.
[0:28:02 – 0:28:15] Adam: Um, you know, I’ll consider it a success even if I don’t catch anything, but I assume if I bombed 2000 casts into the big lake on my lunch breaks and, or like before work all summer long, I’ll eventually catch a lake trout.
[0:28:15 – 0:28:18] Adam: Maybe I’ll get a coaster coasters open on April 12th.
[0:28:18 – 0:28:20] Adam: And that’s about when I started the project and.
[0:28:20 – 0:28:23] Adam: I know people catch Steelhead just casting East Bay.
[0:28:23 – 0:28:24] Adam: It can happen.
[0:28:25 – 0:28:30] Adam: So I’m just going to keep casting, and it’s a good way to force myself to take my breaks.
[0:28:31 – 0:28:36] Adam: And it’s been having fun trying out a new form, video art.
[0:28:36 – 0:28:37] Adam: Sure, yeah.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:38] Adam: I am a video artist.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:40] Adam: I’m like the Knox Harrington of the North Shore.
[0:28:41 – 0:28:42] Erik: Wait four years.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:52] Erik: Somebody will come knocking for those music credits and rip it all out from under you for no reason at a random point in time.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:53] Erik: That makes no sense.
[0:28:53 – 0:28:58] Adam: Like Tumble Home, I’m not going to make any money on Wave Station either.
[0:28:58 – 0:29:01] Adam: I’m only doing it for the love of the art.
[0:29:01 – 0:29:04] Adam: That’s why we’re doing it.
[0:29:04 – 0:29:09] Adam: That’s why we do it, for the love of it and for the enjoyment of getting together every week to chat.
[0:29:10 – 0:29:12] Adam: But yeah, we’re going to be chatting about this tournament.
[0:29:12 – 0:29:22] Adam: But after that, of course, as you just mentioned, Tomahawk Cinema Classics sub-season continues with Eric’s choice, The Enemy Below, 1957.
[0:29:23 – 0:29:24] Adam: Robert Mitchum is back.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:26] Adam: We can’t get enough Mitchum.
[0:29:26 – 0:29:27] Adam: Mitchum plus subs.
[0:29:28 – 0:29:33] Erik: You’d think it would be a match made in heaven, but… What’s the German Capitan’s name?
[0:29:33 – 0:29:34] Erik: He’s not German.
[0:29:34 – 0:29:35] Erik: He’s continental.
[0:29:35 – 0:29:36] Erik: He’s a European star.
[0:29:37 – 0:29:38] Adam: Kurt Juergens.
[0:29:38 – 0:29:39] Adam: Juergens.
[0:29:39 – 0:29:40] Adam: That’s the name I’m looking for.
[0:29:40 – 0:29:41] Adam: How dare you ever.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:42] Adam: What?
[0:29:42 – 0:29:43] Adam: What did you just say?
[0:29:44 – 0:29:44] Adam: German?
[0:29:44 – 0:29:44] Adam: No.
[0:29:45 – 0:29:46] Erik: He’s a continental star.
[0:29:48 – 0:29:50] Erik: World famous actor.
[0:29:51 – 0:29:53] Erik: I’m just talking about the role he’s playing.
[0:29:53 – 0:29:54] Erik: He’s not German.
[0:29:55 – 0:29:56] Erik: He’s not German.
[0:29:56 – 0:29:57] Erik: He’s not even German in the movie?
[0:29:57 – 0:29:57] Erik: No.
[0:29:58 – 0:29:59] Erik: He’s continental.
[0:29:59 – 0:29:59] Erik: He hates this war.
[0:29:59 – 0:30:00] Erik: He’s European.
[0:30:01 – 0:30:02] Adam: I guess I missed that part.
[0:30:03 – 0:30:05] Erik: Well, I just watched the trailer.
[0:30:05 – 0:30:07] Adam: They call him Capitan the whole time.
[0:30:08 – 0:30:11] Adam: He does give that guy reading Mein Kampf a real menacing glare.
[0:30:12 – 0:30:13] Erik: With Robert Mitchum.
[0:30:13 – 0:30:14] Erik: And continental star.
[0:30:15 – 0:30:18] Erik: It’s like, you’re just trying as hard.
[0:30:18 – 0:30:20] Erik: It was like 1957.
[0:30:20 – 0:30:21] Erik: Continental.
[0:30:21 – 0:30:23] Erik: You couldn’t really say German quite yet.
[0:30:23 – 0:30:23] Erik: Oh.
[0:30:23 – 0:30:29] Erik: So they had to call him like a continental star or a European star or whatever.
[0:30:29 – 0:30:31] Adam: He’s part of the intelligentsia.
[0:30:31 – 0:30:32] Adam: Yeah, at the time.
[0:30:33 – 0:30:35] Erik: But like, of course he’s German.
[0:30:36 – 0:30:39] Erik: He’s on a German U-boat and his name’s Kurt Juergens.
[0:30:39 – 0:30:42] Erik: He looks German as hell.
[0:30:42 – 0:30:43] Erik: No, he’s a continental star.
[0:30:43 – 0:30:44] Erik: Yeah, no.
[0:30:44 – 0:30:45] Erik: He’s from Belgium.
[0:30:45 – 0:30:48] Adam: He will make you breakfast.
[0:30:49 – 0:30:51] Adam: Oh, continental.
[0:30:51 – 0:30:51] Adam: Yeah.
[0:30:52 – 0:30:53] Adam: I don’t mind if I do.
[0:30:53 – 0:30:55] Adam: I will have this little yogurt.
[0:30:55 – 0:30:58] Erik: We do get a unique perspective in the enemy below.
[0:30:58 – 0:31:01] Erik: We got a destroyer captain and a sub-captain.
[0:31:01 – 0:31:02] Adam: I like the… Head.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:02] Erik: Two.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:03] Erik: Head.
[0:31:03 – 0:31:07] Erik: Just like today’s final showdown in the Lurnament.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:08] Erik: How appropriate.
[0:31:09 – 0:31:17] Erik: The sub-month has been so good to us in terms of its commensurate meanings.
[0:31:17 – 0:31:18] Erik: Yeah.
[0:31:18 – 0:31:22] Erik: And somehow lining up with exactly what’s been going on in the Lurnament.
[0:31:22 – 0:31:34] Erik: And that might just be a product of us coercing and bending to our wills what actually the movies that we’ve been watching mean.
[0:31:34 – 0:31:36] Erik: But it seems like they’ve all made sense.
[0:31:36 – 0:31:36] Erik: Yeah.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:37] Adam: They have.
[0:31:38 – 0:31:40] Adam: I like that in this movie they call torpedoes fish.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:43] Adam: They might turn around and put a couple fish into us.
[0:31:44 – 0:31:45] Adam: Four of them all at once.
[0:31:45 – 0:31:48] Adam: Shoot them all forward at odd angles.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:50] Adam: One of them sure to strike hull.
[0:31:51 – 0:31:53] Erik: Light a bunch of mattresses on fire.
[0:31:53 – 0:31:54] Erik: Make it look like we got hit.
[0:31:55 – 0:31:57] Adam: Some real tricky maneuvering between these two captains.
[0:31:58 – 0:31:59] Adam: It’s a lot of mirror imagery.
[0:32:01 – 0:32:06] Adam: They’re always one step ahead and behind each other at all times.
[0:32:06 – 0:32:08] Erik: I did learn the hard way last night.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:14] Erik: I tried to take a screenshot of my computer while watching this movie, and it was just like… Nope.
[0:32:14 – 0:32:15] Erik: Just turned to gray.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:16 – 0:32:16] Erik: I hate this world.
[0:32:17 – 0:32:18] Adam: I fucking hate it.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:23] Adam: You gotta take your phone and just take video of your laptop screen while watching it.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:25] Adam: That’s how you get all these sweet…
[0:32:25 – 0:32:26] Adam: So, yeah.
[0:32:26 – 0:32:29] Erik: What are they… What is the… Who is in charge of the…
[0:32:31 – 0:32:51] Adam: studio of an enemy below right now i’m sure it’s just a i’m sure it’s a blanket technology yes it is what could possibly be the video player it’s not the movie itself but what could possibly be gained by taking a screenshot yeah on your computer because then somebody might put it in their weird blue sky fishing show
[0:32:52 – 0:32:53] Erik: What, in the background?
[0:32:53 – 0:32:57] Adam: Oh, I’m definitely using a lot of copyright material that way for sure.
[0:32:58 – 0:33:12] Erik: Hey, if anybody is out there listening in the future, if it’s 2500 or if it’s 1849, whatever year it is, here it is, episode 288, free.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:17] Erik: Take anything that we’ve ever said, anything that we’ve ever done, create it.
[0:33:17 – 0:33:18] Erik: Sample it.
[0:33:18 – 0:33:18] Erik: Sample it.
[0:33:18 – 0:33:20] Erik: Do whatever you want with it.
[0:33:20 – 0:33:20] Erik: I don’t care.
[0:33:20 – 0:33:21] Erik: Auto-tune us up.
[0:33:22 – 0:33:23] Erik: If that’s still a thing.
[0:33:23 – 0:33:25] Adam: Why does everybody care so much?
[0:33:25 – 0:33:26] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:31] Adam: By the year 17,776, nobody will care and they will be sampling and tuning us up.
[0:33:31 – 0:33:32] Adam: Tuning us up?
[0:33:32 – 0:33:36] Adam: Yeah, they’ll be like, those Tumble Home Sports Network episodes are the best thing.
[0:33:36 – 0:33:39] Erik: A couple thousand years ago, they had it figured out.
[0:33:39 – 0:33:40] Adam: They did.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:47] Adam: The future, like the great, great, great grandchildren of the Avalanches will be making an album using us in the background.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:47] Adam: Hell yeah.
[0:33:48 – 0:33:51] Adam: And we won’t sue them, and we won’t even ask for it to be taken.
[0:33:51 – 0:33:52] Adam: You leave it up, kids.
[0:33:52 – 0:33:53] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:53 – 0:33:53] Adam: We approve.
[0:33:54 – 0:33:58] Erik: The internet is a wasteland, and we are no better for having it.
[0:34:02 – 0:34:28] Adam: uh i mean it’s got a couple things going for it but i mean mostly not that we get to do this show together all right so that’s one fair enough uh that’s all we’ve got uh for the pre-game show um wasn’t it fun that was pretty good pre-game show i mean uh thank you for these lagunitas beasts of both worlds uh these are pretty good so thank you to the little cleo team for uh
[0:34:28 – 0:34:32] Adam: Sending these over in a gift basket, and thank you for Admiral Gary.
[0:34:32 – 0:34:38] Adam: I hope that TNT doesn’t actually detonate and breach our hull in the middle of this episode.
[0:34:38 – 0:34:39] Adam: That would be a real shame.
[0:34:40 – 0:34:42] Adam: There’ll be oil and debris everywhere.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:44] Adam: Is it real oil, though?
[0:34:45 – 0:34:45] Adam: Diesel.
[0:34:46 – 0:34:46] Erik: Fake oil?
[0:34:47 – 0:34:47] Adam: Fake oil?
[0:34:48 – 0:34:50] Adam: There’s a lot of new sub-tricks I learned from this movie.
[0:34:50 – 0:34:52] Adam: I can’t wait to talk about it tonight in the mezzanine.
[0:34:52 – 0:34:53] Erik: A lot of new sub-tricks.
[0:34:53 – 0:34:57] Erik: Some, I feel like, were stolen from this movie.
[0:34:57 – 0:34:58] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:58 – 0:35:04] Adam: Oh, there’s a lot of things in this movie that I’ve seen in other movies, and that was one of the reasons I wanted to watch it, because it was a trendsetter.
[0:35:04 – 0:35:05] Adam: Do we need to go back?
[0:35:05 – 0:35:06] Erik: Can we go back farther?
[0:35:07 – 0:35:08] Adam: What’s the first sub-movie?
[0:35:08 – 0:35:09] Adam: What’s the first sub-movie?
[0:35:09 – 0:35:11] Adam: I may have to look into this.
[0:35:11 – 0:35:17] Adam: I’m pretty sure that this one and Run Silent and Run Deep are the ones that all other sub-movies are based on.
[0:35:17 – 0:35:17] Adam: Seems like it.
[0:35:18 – 0:35:24] Adam: But yeah, there’s a lot of the classic sub-movie elements here that are at play that you do see elsewhere.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:26] Adam: And I was like, well, this is very well done.
[0:35:26 – 0:35:31] Adam: There’s a couple of shots that are super unique that I can’t wait to talk about later.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:33] Erik: Yeah, there’s a couple of moments.
[0:35:33 – 0:35:41] Erik: One of your favorite, and it’s a classic and it makes the most sense, but you’re Leo sitting on the couch pointing.
[0:35:42 – 0:36:08] Adam: yes multiple moments last night while watching this movie where i was like that’s the thing that’s the i was like oh they stole that from oh wait this is from 1957 yeah they did it they nobody stole this from them yeah at all so yeah we are uh looking forward to that conversation up in the mezzanine later but we are of course currently sitting in the booth here and uh
[0:36:10 – 0:36:13] Adam: I can’t wait any longer to announce this, though.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:22] Adam: Our booth has been moved onto the steamship Wolverine, and we have moved out of Winnipeg onto Lake Winnipeg itself for the finals.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:26] Adam: We’re out of the tank, and we’re into a live environment for the championship here.
[0:36:27 – 0:36:37] Adam: And the steamship Wolverine is our base of operations tonight as we are out here breaking ice and watching these two amazing teams –
[0:36:38 – 0:36:42] Adam: fish it up, and they’re still going at it right now as we speak.
[0:36:42 – 0:36:46] Adam: So we’re going to definitely get to those results soon.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:56] Adam: I did want to make sure we gave a special shout-out to Dustin Bufflin, Dustin Bufflin, Big Buff, in the fishing hole in Winnipeg for hosting those final Fleur games last weekend.
[0:36:57 – 0:37:02] Adam: And for hosting us here on the riverbank and keeping us well provisioned with gravy this entire time.
[0:37:04 – 0:37:08] Adam: Yeah, this week has been a real treat to be back in Winnipeg with you, Jim.
[0:37:08 – 0:37:10] Erik: Constant gravy rations.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:16] Adam: You know, Dustin Bufflin and the team there at the Fish and Hole have been very gracious hosts.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:17] Adam: So thank you very much.
[0:37:18 – 0:37:24] Adam: We did receive a dire warning from the Lonesome Lighthouse Keeper as we moved out onto Lake Winnipeg.
[0:37:24 – 0:37:25] Adam: He said, please don’t go.
[0:37:26 – 0:37:27] Adam: It’s dangerous.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:28] Adam: Please stay.
[0:37:28 – 0:37:29] Adam: Please stay and chat with me.
[0:37:30 – 0:37:31] Adam: But we said, no way.
[0:37:31 – 0:37:32] Adam: We’re going to keep going.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:36] Adam: We got business to attend to, and we’re heading out onto the big lake.
[0:37:37 – 0:37:42] Adam: We do have a massive crowd on hand here for the championship finals matchup.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:48] Adam: The Ghosts of Eric Severide and Walter Porter are also here to make the ceremonial first cast.
[0:37:48 – 0:37:53] Adam: They have dug up the San Susi from York Factory and brought it back down here
[0:37:54 – 0:37:56] Adam: For the ceremonial cast, and there it goes.
[0:37:56 – 0:37:57] Adam: There it goes.
[0:37:57 – 0:38:03] Adam: They appear to be trolling a suic musky thriller, and they are just paddling away from us now.
[0:38:03 – 0:38:04] Adam: There they go.
[0:38:04 – 0:38:07] Adam: They’re paddling just down a perfect course north.
[0:38:07 – 0:38:09] Adam: They’re heading for Norway House, it looks like.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:10] Erik: They’re heading back out.
[0:38:10 – 0:38:12] Erik: So long, boys.
[0:38:13 – 0:38:15] Erik: Save some of those canned pineapple for the champs, boys.
[0:38:19 – 0:38:28] Adam: Yeah, we’ve got the grandstand set up here on the steamship Wolverine, and the entire Winnipeg Canoe Club is in attendance as well, including the skipper himself, Sam Southern.
[0:38:28 – 0:38:29] Erik: Oh, God, yes.
[0:38:29 – 0:38:37] Adam: And they are also eager to be of polite assistance should anyone else need additional provisions here during the championship finals.
[0:38:39 – 0:38:44] Adam: I also see a few of our favorite lures on board here on the ship, Jim.
[0:38:44 – 0:38:46] Adam: I see the two-tone crappie tubes are back.
[0:38:46 – 0:38:49] Adam: They’re still holding that glittered sign that says feels good.
[0:38:50 – 0:38:52] Adam: We can just announce this now.
[0:38:52 – 0:38:55] Adam: The crappie tubes have won the sportsmanship award.
[0:38:55 – 0:38:56] Adam: Oh, nice.
[0:38:56 – 0:39:05] Adam: They’ve been ever since getting knocked out in the second round, they fell down to the MEPS Aglia 3s up there in the Atacocan Braddock.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:12] Adam: And ever since they’ve been knocked out, they’ve been going to as many games as they can get to reasonably.
[0:39:12 – 0:39:16] Adam: And they keep bringing this glittered sign that just says, feels good.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:20] Adam: Those two-tone crappie tubes.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:22] Adam: Really a treat to have them here.
[0:39:22 – 0:39:24] Adam: They just cheer for sport.
[0:39:25 – 0:39:31] Adam: They don’t really cheer for either team at this point, although they technically are part of the soft plastics conference.
[0:39:32 – 0:39:43] Adam: You see that a lot where somebody is in the same conference with somebody, and it’s almost like the rivalry is too strong where you don’t want to cheer for them to win it all because then you have to hear about it every year after there.
[0:39:44 – 0:39:47] Erik: They’re like the Zendaya of competitor viewing.
[0:39:48 – 0:39:48] Adam: Exactly.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:49] Adam: Just like that.
[0:39:50 – 0:39:51] Adam: Just like that.
[0:39:51 – 0:39:53] Adam: This is like a challenger situation, but for fishing.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:54] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:39:55 – 0:39:58] Adam: It’s a mental game and a physical game.
[0:39:58 – 0:40:00] Erik: Oh, very physical.
[0:40:01 – 0:40:07] Adam: The touch, the feel, the mentality of those crappy tubes, though.
[0:40:08 – 0:40:10] Adam: They transcend all that.
[0:40:10 – 0:40:16] Adam: They’ve set ego aside, and they just love sport, and they just want to feel good.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:19] Adam: So they’re here again, and big shout-out to…
[0:40:20 – 0:40:23] Adam: Sadiq and Wiggins from Crappie Tubes.
[0:40:24 – 0:40:31] Adam: They’re two of my favorites, and I wasn’t really familiar with their work coming into the tournament, but I’m impressed.
[0:40:32 – 0:40:41] Adam: Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Carrie Ooles, and Philip Seymour Hoffman are all grilling steaks on the steam pipes of the ship, and they’re just keeping us well-supplied.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:48] Adam: There is such a thing as having too much gravy, so you do have to add some steak into your diet usually every day.
[0:40:48 – 0:40:49] Adam: There’s a cast of Twister?
[0:40:49 – 0:40:54] Adam: Oh, everybody from Twister’s here to cheer on the jig and the Twister tail combo.
[0:40:54 – 0:40:56] Adam: And they did graciously.
[0:40:56 – 0:40:59] Adam: They slaughtered several head of cattle.
[0:41:00 – 0:41:02] Adam: And they’re just frying up steaks nonstop out here.
[0:41:02 – 0:41:05] Adam: There’s, like I said, a lot of people on this steamship.
[0:41:05 – 0:41:06] Adam: And they’re all getting steak.
[0:41:07 – 0:41:08] Erik: Scousy grammar?
[0:41:08 – 0:41:08] Erik: Chipping?
[0:41:08 – 0:41:08] Erik: Yeah.
[0:41:09 – 0:41:11] Erik: Kelsey Grammer’s chipping back towards the lighthouse.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:13] Erik: Oh, he’s chipping back onto the sub.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:15] Adam: Yeah.
[0:41:15 – 0:41:17] Adam: The lighthouse keeper does not appreciate that.
[0:41:18 – 0:41:22] Adam: And we just keep yelling back to him in the lighthouse, welcome aboard.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:25] Adam: What does that do?
[0:41:26 – 0:41:27] Adam: All aboard.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:28] Adam: All aboard.
[0:41:28 – 0:41:30] Adam: I don’t think that’s it either.
[0:41:30 – 0:41:33] Adam: I think it is welcome aboard.
[0:41:33 – 0:41:38] Adam: But that does not seem like it could… We’re not going to go there.
[0:41:38 – 0:41:40] Adam: We got John and Dave Tesh.
[0:41:40 – 0:41:43] Adam: They’re just here playing live music on the…
[0:41:43 – 0:41:46] Adam: They’re just playing their own live rendition of Round Ball Rock.
[0:41:46 – 0:41:47] Adam: The Teshes are here.
[0:41:47 – 0:42:11] Adam: both tashes and they’re wearing their very glamorous uh very glamorous vests and playing their uh their hit single which has been the anthem of this tournament they don’t have small hammers and gasoline do they they do and they did see this coming oh no um but it is as everybody only for celebratory use though absolutely and they are ready to celebrate big time they’re gonna light it up
[0:42:11 – 0:42:13] Erik: We’re going to light mini hammers on fire?
[0:42:13 – 0:42:19] Adam: Yeah, and they got a bunch of fireworks, and those vests are flammable, very flammable, so be careful there, boys.
[0:42:21 – 0:42:23] Erik: Those vests do look flammable.
[0:42:23 – 0:42:25] Adam: They look extremely flammable.
[0:42:25 – 0:42:26] Adam: That would melt some skin.
[0:42:26 – 0:42:28] Adam: It’s not going to be great, so everybody be careful.
[0:42:28 – 0:42:31] Erik: They look like pure solid puddles of oil.
[0:42:31 – 0:42:34] Erik: They’re just ready to start on fire.
[0:42:34 – 0:42:43] Adam: It looks like the surface of the ocean after a U-boat has been sunk, except for if you turn that into a garment and then jazzed it up a little bit.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:48] Erik: What is that, a snapshot of the Exxon Valdez leak you’re wearing there on your shirt?
[0:42:49 – 0:42:51] Erik: No, it’s my fancy Tesh vest.
[0:42:51 – 0:42:53] Adam: They got some really nice speakers out here, too.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:55] Adam: Everybody knows it’s a lyrics-forward song.
[0:42:57 – 0:42:59] Adam: So they’re going to dunk it, I can tell.
[0:42:59 – 0:43:03] Adam: They’re going to dunk it and continue to dunk it during the entirety of this finale.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:12] Adam: I don’t know where he went now, but I did earlier see Steve Zulu working his Shad Z rig on the poop deck.
[0:43:12 – 0:43:16] Adam: He was twitching that redbone pattern with the glitter once, and he just twitched it once.
[0:43:16 – 0:43:19] Adam: He caught two smallies and a jumbo jet dog somehow.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Adam: He reeled in.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:23] Adam: Susan Sanko is also here working the worm over this reef.
[0:43:24 – 0:43:27] Adam: I saw her land a really nice pike earlier in the pregame show.
[0:43:27 – 0:43:33] Adam: So a lot of strength coming from the soft plastics division here on the steamship Wolverine.
[0:43:34 – 0:43:43] Adam: There is a massive display of support from the Rapala Conference, of course, though, coming out here in support of the X-Wraps today on Lake Winnipeg.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:46] Adam: Spendy Shades is here from the Shad Wraps.
[0:43:47 – 0:43:48] Adam: I did see Silver and Black.
[0:43:48 – 0:43:59] Adam: OG and OGF seven silver and black was down there waving a sign that just said balsam boys heart boats, which is my favorite sign I’ve seen all week.
[0:43:59 – 0:44:00] Adam: And I’ve seen some good ones.
[0:44:00 – 0:44:03] Adam: I don’t know about you just this week or in general.
[0:44:03 – 0:44:05] Adam: Just this week, but, I mean, in general as well.
[0:44:05 – 0:44:07] Adam: I mean, hard to beat a sign like that.
[0:44:07 – 0:44:08] Erik: Yeah, that’s a good sign.
[0:44:09 – 0:44:20] Adam: League scoring leader SilverblueHJ6 is here on the Wolverine wearing a big festive floral hat that just says, Bite me and your wildest dreams will come true.
[0:44:21 – 0:44:26] Adam: That’s mostly a promise and maybe a bit of a threat.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:27] Adam: I like it.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:28] Adam: I like the energy.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:29 – 0:44:34] Adam: Yeah, the Rapala team is here in full force, and they’re pretty boisterous down there.
[0:44:35 – 0:44:43] Adam: Finally, I’d like to give a shout-out to our four primary bait shop hosts that held each region of this tournament.
[0:44:43 – 0:44:47] Adam: Of course, the Ugly Baby did not host any, unfortunately.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:48] Adam: Maybe next year for you guys.
[0:44:48 – 0:44:58] Adam: But we had the Beaver House in Grand Marais, Scoobies in Ely, Voyager Bait and Tackle in Atikokan, and Northwoods Bait and Tackle in Cook, Minnesota.
[0:44:58 – 0:44:59] Adam: Please visit.
[0:45:00 – 0:45:02] Adam: That’s what it says on their sign.
[0:45:03 – 0:45:11] Adam: And we could review a basic path to the championship bracket for our two finalists and then possibly get into it.
[0:45:11 – 0:45:12] Adam: What do you think, Jim?
[0:45:12 – 0:45:15] Adam: We’re coming down to the wire here and this looks like it’s a real close score right now.
[0:45:18 – 0:45:23] Adam: Ooh, it looks like the Jiggies just lost a fish perhaps.
[0:45:23 – 0:45:24] Adam: That looked like they maybe had a bite there.
[0:45:24 – 0:45:25] Adam: This one’s coming down to the wire.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:27] Adam: We got to get over to the scores here.
[0:45:28 – 0:45:33] Adam: Last minute of the game, and yeah, we got to get over to pole tab.
[0:45:34 – 0:45:37] Adam: And find out what the final votes were here.
[0:45:38 – 0:45:40] Adam: The fishing has been impressive this entire tournament.
[0:45:40 – 0:45:43] Adam: And, damn, this has been a great finals.
[0:45:43 – 0:45:43] Adam: Two one seeds.
[0:45:44 – 0:45:45] Adam: Two one seeds.
[0:45:45 – 0:45:47] Adam: Just going to town out there.
[0:45:47 – 0:45:48] Adam: It’s great.
[0:45:48 – 0:45:54] Erik: First in a tumble tournament in any way, shape, or form history, I believe.
[0:45:54 – 0:45:55] Erik: Or a 1v1 in the finale.
[0:45:56 – 0:45:58] Erik: X-Rap going up against the…
[0:46:00 – 0:46:24] Adam: jig slash curly tail combo doesn’t roll off the tongue but they’ve made it here doesn’t matter it’s the jig and soft plastic it’s so many different combinations it’s great everybody’s got their favorites and uh jim’s clicking it in there thank you to everybody i went and voted oh my god oh my god oh my god what kind of a world are we living in i’m quitting the podcast
[0:46:27 – 0:46:28] Adam: Woo-hoo-hoo!
[0:46:30 – 0:46:35] Adam: It’s a close one, and it looks like they got a couple fish at the very end.
[0:46:36 – 0:46:41] Adam: The jig and curly tail combo are our tumble ornament champions.
[0:46:42 – 0:46:43] Adam: Insane.
[0:46:43 – 0:46:49] Adam: 2025, they got it 40 to 36 in a certified slobber knocker.
[0:46:49 – 0:46:51] Erik: Not what I was expecting at all.
[0:46:52 – 0:46:58] Erik: The lore of this whole podcast is based around the X-Rap.
[0:46:58 – 0:46:59] Adam: I thought it was going to be there.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:04] Adam: It was close enough where I don’t think you can be mad if you’re a fan of either team here.
[0:47:04 – 0:47:07] Adam: They’re clearly two amazing lures with two very different approaches.
[0:47:08 – 0:47:10] Adam: It just so happens here, it’s still early season.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:16] Adam: As I mentioned earlier, we had to use the steamship Wolverine to break ice from the lighthouse out here.
[0:47:17 – 0:47:28] Adam: Just open up water and that early season jig approach with the vertical twitch pattern, it just maybe with the colder water temps, that was the slight difference here.
[0:47:29 – 0:47:31] Adam: But with excellent lures, you can’t go wrong with them.
[0:47:32 – 0:47:38] Adam: But yeah, the jig and soft plastic combo is your champion.
[0:47:38 – 0:47:41] Adam: It’s the number one lure for boundary waters fishing out of a canoe.
[0:47:41 – 0:47:46] Erik: Buy your stock in curly tail soft plastics, ladies and gentlemen.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:50] Erik: These scouts down in Indiana are going to be clamoring.
[0:47:50 – 0:48:00] Adam: I got to say, I didn’t vote in this one, and I don’t think you did either, but I was buying some little Cleos this week, and I did go and look at what’s an XRAP cost.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:21] Adam: x-raps go for like 13 14 bucks brand new no matter what size even for the small ones and and that’s online i don’t know what they would cost trying to buy them an actual sporting goods store um so that’s pretty pricey trying to outfit a whole boy scout troop if you think of it that way you can buy for what one x-rap would cost you can buy like a whole week’s worth of jig heads
[0:48:22 – 0:48:23] Adam: So it’s a more affordable option.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:26] Adam: It makes a lot more sense for a Boy Scout troop.
[0:48:27 – 0:48:30] Adam: And you’re going to catch a ton of fish going that way.
[0:48:31 – 0:48:33] Adam: Jim, what’s your favorite color for a jighead?
[0:48:34 – 0:48:36] Erik: It depends on where I’m at.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:39] Erik: Color of the water, clarity matters.
[0:48:40 – 0:48:48] Erik: I like a black gumball jig head with a yellow eye and a white curly tail.
[0:48:49 – 0:48:49] Erik: That’s nice.
[0:48:49 – 0:48:53] Erik: A little curly tail on top of that.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:55] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:48:55 – 0:48:57] Erik: I can’t remember any of the weights, but like here.
[0:48:58 – 0:48:58] Erik: Quarter ounce.
[0:48:58 – 0:48:59] Adam: Three-eighths ounce.
[0:49:00 – 0:49:01] Adam: Three-eighths, quarter ounce.
[0:49:01 – 0:49:02] Adam: Yeah, those are all pretty good.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:03] Erik: Somewhere in that mid-range.
[0:49:03 – 0:49:05] Erik: Nothing huge, but not those tiny ones.
[0:49:05 – 0:49:06] Erik: I can’t do those tiny ones.
[0:49:06 – 0:49:12] Adam: No, you got to have some weight, especially in the canoe, because as we mentioned earlier, I think last week we were talking about that and how much the canoe moves around.
[0:49:12 – 0:49:16] Adam: It just makes the jighead approach a little bit trickier if you’re in any kind of wind.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:23] Adam: So you’ve got to have that heavier jighead, I think, to counterbalance that if you’re in a light boat.
[0:49:24 – 0:49:34] Erik: There’s just something not nearly as satisfying about casting those tiny little pinhead jigs where it’s just like, eh, eh.
[0:49:35 – 0:49:36] Erik: And it’s something that I can kind of feel.
[0:49:36 – 0:49:40] Erik: And then also when it’s under the water, it’s way easier.
[0:49:40 – 0:49:42] Erik: You can feel it bouncing on the rocks.
[0:49:42 – 0:49:44] Erik: That is a fun way to fish, honestly.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:47] Erik: But you almost need to be anchored.
[0:49:47 – 0:49:47] Erik: That’s the thing.
[0:49:48 – 0:49:53] Erik: I honestly don’t think the jig-curly-tail combo is a great Boundary Waters lure.
[0:49:54 – 0:49:54] Erik: It’s tougher.
[0:49:55 – 0:49:57] Erik: It’s a tough lure from a canoe.
[0:49:57 – 0:50:00] Erik: This isn’t a great Boy Scout option.
[0:50:01 – 0:50:02] Adam: They’ll make it work, though.
[0:50:02 – 0:50:03] Erik: There’s going to be a lot of snags.
[0:50:03 – 0:50:04] Erik: You’re going to get a guy in the stern.
[0:50:04 – 0:50:05] Erik: You’re going to get a guy in the bow.
[0:50:05 – 0:50:06] Erik: They’re cheaper.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:06] Erik: You’re both snagged.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:07] Adam: Now you’re screwed.
[0:50:07 – 0:50:09] Adam: You’re going to lose a bunch of snags for sure.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:11] Adam: I mean, the X-Rap is a more simplified approach.
[0:50:11 – 0:50:15] Adam: You can just paddle around with it behind you, and you’re going to catch fish that way, too.
[0:50:15 – 0:50:17] Adam: It’s also a toss-up because it’s like, yeah, cut the line.
[0:50:18 – 0:50:22] Erik: It’s $0.65 a lead in those J-Heads versus $14 in a balsa wood, hand-carved, Finnish…
[0:50:28 – 0:50:30] Erik: I’m sure not at this point, but you know what I’m saying.
[0:50:31 – 0:50:33] Erik: Those Rappalas are exorbitant.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:33] Erik: They come in those.
[0:50:34 – 0:50:41] Adam: We said last week we’d go full on breathing liquid water to go down in scuba to retrieve those if we end up snagging into a log.
[0:50:41 – 0:50:46] Erik: Yeah, you snag a jig head, it’s like, well, pull out another 40 that you got.
[0:50:46 – 0:50:47] Erik: It’s not a big deal.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:53] Adam: You know, we’re wealthy podcasters, wealthy independent podcasters, so we can afford those X-Raps, though.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:54] Adam: Podcasting fat cats?
[0:50:54 – 0:50:56] Adam: Yeah, living that life of luxury.
[0:50:57 – 0:51:02] Adam: But I understand that, you know, yeah, you’re going to lose more of the jig heads, but it’s way more affordable that way.
[0:51:02 – 0:51:04] Adam: You got all sorts of different options, too.
[0:51:05 – 0:51:13] Adam: What’s nice about that, which I don’t think has been mentioned, is you can keep, like, I like a nice bright pink jig head, but then you can either go with, like, a black twisty tail or white.
[0:51:14 – 0:51:17] Adam: You can always, like, switch up the soft plastic element without re-tying.
[0:51:17 – 0:51:19] Adam: So it gives you, like, way more versatility that way too.
[0:51:19 – 0:51:20] Erik: Yeah, that’s true.
[0:51:20 – 0:51:24] Adam: And, yeah, you don’t want to be out there in the middle of the day when there’s whitecaps going on trying to fish it that way.
[0:51:24 – 0:51:35] Adam: But, like, for that evening bite or, like, first morning bite when it’s nice and calm on the lake, when you got those dead calm reflections out there, just being out there first light in the morning, like, come on, nothing’s going to beat that.
[0:51:36 – 0:51:38] Adam: Get out there, have your cup of coffee, and go take a couple –
[0:51:39 – 0:51:41] Adam: Go take a couple casts out in front of camp.
[0:51:42 – 0:51:43] Adam: You’re probably going to have success with that.
[0:51:44 – 0:51:48] Adam: I appreciate anybody who voted in this tournament.
[0:51:49 – 0:51:51] Adam: There were so many close matchups in this tournament.
[0:51:52 – 0:51:53] Erik: It was the closest tournament, I think.
[0:51:54 – 0:51:55] Adam: Yeah, like multiple one-point.
[0:51:56 – 0:51:59] Adam: The Rad El Trap famously had multiple one-point victories.
[0:51:59 – 0:52:01] Adam: We had several that were within five.
[0:52:02 – 0:52:13] Adam: I don’t know, probably seven or eight matchups that came down to a couple votes there, including most of the Final Fours and, of course, the finals here tonight in Winnipeg.
[0:52:14 – 0:52:16] Adam: So amazing tournament.
[0:52:16 – 0:52:22] Adam: I have the full bracket here, and we’ll fill it out and complete it here.
[0:52:22 – 0:52:26] Adam: I’ll probably draw a big twisty tail on there tonight after I get home.
[0:52:27 – 0:52:30] Adam: And we’ll, of course, hang this on the wall of the Tumble Shed.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:33] Adam: I’ll probably go hang it out there tomorrow morning before this episode even posts.
[0:52:34 – 0:52:38] Adam: Next to the other in the Tumble Home Sports Network Hall of Fame.
[0:52:38 – 0:52:43] Adam: You know, Eric and I had gone to the Hall of Fame of Hockey in Toronto this year.
[0:52:43 – 0:52:53] Adam: And the Tumble Home Sports Network Hall of Fame in the Tumble Shed is starting to amass quite the collection of memorabilia and history out there, which is fun to see.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:54] Erik: It’s becoming a real shrine.
[0:52:54 – 0:52:58] Adam: It is a shrine to sport and paddling.
[0:52:58 – 0:53:00] Adam: So that one’s going up there.
[0:53:00 – 0:53:04] Adam: We do have to make a physical copy of the Coggins Cup at some point to hang there too in the hall.
[0:53:05 – 0:53:07] Adam: But this one’s on a big piece of tagboard.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:08] Adam: So I’ll fill it out tonight.
[0:53:08 – 0:53:13] Adam: I’ll take a picture and I’ll post this on the subreddit and the Discord like tomorrow night.
[0:53:13 – 0:53:17] Adam: I don’t want to accidentally spoil anybody who hasn’t had a chance to listen to the show first.
[0:53:18 – 0:53:22] Adam: But I’ll post it up there for anybody that wants to review the full bracket and, you know,
[0:53:22 – 0:53:43] Adam: throw some shade or send us any ransom notes or uh or praise would take either i’m fine with that but i thought the voting was all pretty close and fair on this one and uh yeah a lot of excitement and hey boy scouts if you’re listening out there or boy scout leader khaki scout leader out there if you’re listening uh i hope this answers your question
[0:53:44 – 0:53:47] Erik: Was this worth it, or did we just confuse the situation?
[0:53:47 – 0:53:54] Adam: No, I think you take anything out of the Sweet 16 and on and up and play to your strengths and work the weather.
[0:53:54 – 0:53:58] Adam: As we always say on the show, go with the flow because that’s how you’re going to get your best results.
[0:53:59 – 0:54:04] Adam: We got a couple of awards I wanted to commemorate here.
[0:54:05 – 0:54:07] Adam: Got to pull it up here.
[0:54:07 – 0:54:12] Adam: Dear friend of the show, Cheap Dancer has been all over the slobber knockers.
[0:54:13 – 0:54:21] Adam: And I’m not sure we’re all on the same page on what a slobber knocker is, but we all know what it feels like when you’re watching a slobber knocker.
[0:54:22 – 0:54:24] Adam: But I don’t know if we have the parameters quite set.
[0:54:24 – 0:54:29] Adam: But Cheap Dancer has been also running the locks.
[0:54:30 – 0:54:31] Adam: The locks of the week.
[0:54:32 – 0:54:37] Adam: And I got out when Shadraps went down in the Elite 8 there.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:38] Adam: And that was my last lock of the week.
[0:54:39 – 0:54:43] Adam: And I didn’t feel like it was appropriate to continue locking in more winners after I got one wrong.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:43] Adam: But…
[0:54:44 – 0:54:49] Adam: I got a message from Cheap Dancer after the polls closed here on Discord.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:56] Adam: Ghost of Ed Abbey has won the Greggs Rock Lock Trophy for the 2025 Learnament.
[0:54:56 – 0:54:57] Adam: Congrats.
[0:54:58 – 0:55:00] Adam: He locked up four out of the six rounds, apparently.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:07] Adam: And that is pretty impressive from a dear, dear friend of the show, Ghost of Ed Abbey.
[0:55:07 – 0:55:11] Adam: Been with us a long time there, and we always appreciate your contributions and
[0:55:12 – 0:55:16] Adam: That’s a pretty big prize there, winning the Greg’s Rock Lock Trophy.
[0:55:17 – 0:55:24] Adam: Second place is a tie between Pequod Seapod and Squarejaw77, who each locked up three out of the six rounds.
[0:55:25 – 0:55:32] Adam: And in third place, there’s a four-way tie between Hopalicious, Gobi in My Pants, Mamagwayze, Musk Eater.
[0:55:32 – 0:55:33] Adam: There we go.
[0:55:34 – 0:55:35] Adam: Two out of the six locks completed.
[0:55:35 – 0:55:39] Adam: So I called two shad wraps correctly in there somehow.
[0:55:40 – 0:55:41] Adam: So I got on the list.
[0:55:41 – 0:55:42] Adam: You’re in there.
[0:55:42 – 0:55:52] Adam: I don’t think that we necessarily need to put the third place four-way tie in there, but thank you for the shout-out, and thank you to anybody who is brave enough to submit a lock of the week.
[0:55:52 – 0:55:53] Adam: Chunk, chunk.
[0:55:54 – 0:56:00] Adam: It’s been a staple of Tumulam Sports Network tournaments for a while now, the big lock sound effects, so a lot of fun.
[0:56:02 – 0:56:03] Adam: We got another message here.
[0:56:04 – 0:56:11] Adam: Eight homies had only one locked up correctly, and most of them were because they weren’t putting in a prediction for all the weeks.
[0:56:11 – 0:56:12] Adam: We got a bunch of people in there.
[0:56:14 – 0:56:16] Adam: Betty’s Flies, The Creek Chub, HD Mayo.
[0:56:16 – 0:56:18] Adam: You did get one locked up, Jim.
[0:56:19 – 0:56:21] Adam: Admiral Gary, J-Dat, Aldi won.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:22] Adam: Jouer des Pessoins.
[0:56:23 – 0:56:29] Adam: And I have no excuse, but Cheap Dancer himself did make a prediction every round.
[0:56:30 – 0:56:32] Adam: More than everyone else, and I only correctly locked up one.
[0:56:33 – 0:56:36] Adam: In the final, did call the jighead twisty tail combo.
[0:56:36 – 0:56:37] Adam: Finally, Cheap Dancer, you did it.
[0:56:37 – 0:56:40] Adam: You keep locking them up, eventually that lock will hold.
[0:56:40 – 0:56:41] Erik: That’s a hell of a pick.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:43] Erik: That was bold.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:44] Erik: Not one I would have made.
[0:56:44 – 0:57:02] Adam: I don’t know that I actually tried to lock him in because, like I said, I failed on the Shad Wrap, so I don’t think I actually called it, but I made a few comments on the subreddit indicating that I felt the advantage was with the soft plastic there over the very expensive X-Wrap just because of the price factor.
[0:57:02 – 0:57:05] Adam: I don’t know how many people were considering that when they were making their votes.
[0:57:06 – 0:57:12] Adam: And I doubt the fish were considering that out here on Lake Winnipeg today when those last couple of fish were caught right before the buzzer.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:15] Adam: Don’t think they’re thinking about that at all.
[0:57:16 – 0:57:17] Adam: Both lures caught a lot of fish, though.
[0:57:17 – 0:57:19] Adam: It was at 40 to 36.
[0:57:19 – 0:57:21] Adam: We had over 75 fish caught out here today.
[0:57:21 – 0:57:24] Adam: Very impressive considering the conditions.
[0:57:25 – 0:57:31] Adam: Apparently, Ghost of Ed Abbey can contact Cheap Dancer for a trophy and prize pack.
[0:57:31 – 0:57:32] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:57:32 – 0:57:32] Adam: All right.
[0:57:32 – 0:57:33] Adam: Wow.
[0:57:33 – 0:57:39] Adam: Also, we have a Most Valuable Pattern competition going on with people voting on the subreddit.
[0:57:40 – 0:57:40] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:57:40 – 0:57:48] Adam: There wasn’t that much time for people to vote on it, but we did get some nominees from the two championship teams.
[0:57:49 – 0:57:54] Adam: And it looks here like the X-Wraps… Well, why don’t I…
[0:57:54 – 0:57:55] Adam: I’ll go through…
[0:57:55 – 0:57:59] Adam: So we have nominees for each side, Jim, and then I’ll tell you the winners.
[0:57:59 – 0:58:00] Adam: Does that sound good to you?
[0:58:00 – 0:58:01] Adam: Sure.
[0:58:01 – 0:58:05] Adam: We’ll start with the X-Wrap side, just for that side of the bracket.
[0:58:06 – 0:58:08] Adam: The Little Cleo Tequila Sunrise…
[0:58:08 – 0:58:12] Adam: Did get awarded the Rookie of the Year award, which is nice.
[0:58:12 – 0:58:15] Adam: And they’re also the show sponsor tonight, so that was nice.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:16] Adam: It is nice.
[0:58:16 – 0:58:26] Adam: We had X-Wrap in olive green, X-Wrap with hot steel, and Shadwrap Spendy Shades did get in as a nominee but did not receive any votes.
[0:58:29 – 0:58:35] Adam: And X-Wrap Hot Mustard Muddler was also in there.
[0:58:35 – 0:58:36] Erik: That’s a good one.
[0:58:36 – 0:58:37] Adam: Yeah.
[0:58:39 – 0:58:39] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:58:39 – 0:58:43] Adam: Apparently, they’re saying the little Cleo got five MVP votes over there.
[0:58:43 – 0:58:44] Adam: I don’t know about that.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:48] Adam: It looks like the hot steel was the highest vote getter for the X-Raps, though.
[0:58:50 – 0:58:57] Adam: On the soft plastic sides, we had the curly tail jig with a chartreuse glitter combo, which is nice.
[0:58:59 – 0:59:02] Adam: The Berkeley power bait twisty tail grub pumpkin seed combo.
[0:59:03 – 0:59:05] Adam: That’s a mouthful for both me and the fish.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:09] Adam: A curly-tailed motor oil red flake jig.
[0:59:10 – 0:59:20] Adam: And your winner, and I think we’re going to call this the MVP of the tournament, was the Mr. Twister and Milk Truce curly-tailed jig combo.
[0:59:21 – 0:59:22] Adam: Milk Truce, you ever heard of that one?
[0:59:22 – 0:59:23] Adam: Yeah, makes sense.
[0:59:24 – 0:59:26] Adam: This team is sponsored by milk and cookies.
[0:59:27 – 0:59:32] Erik: Yeah, the championship team, the MVP has to go to a player on the team.
[0:59:33 – 0:59:34] Adam: There we go.
[0:59:34 – 0:59:38] Adam: So yeah, Mr. Twister, Milk Truce got four MVP votes.
[0:59:38 – 0:59:41] Adam: So that was only up for like a day and a half.
[0:59:41 – 0:59:44] Adam: So there’s not very many votes in there, but I think that one’s accurate.
[0:59:44 – 0:59:45] Adam: You know, we’re going to go with that.
[0:59:46 – 0:59:51] Adam: So congratulations to Milk Truce on that most valuable pattern on the championship team.
[0:59:54 – 0:59:54] Adam: There we go.
[0:59:54 – 0:59:57] Adam: So, yeah, I don’t know.
[0:59:57 – 1:00:00] Adam: Apparently Ghost of Ed Abbey is going to win some sort of bootleg merch over there.
[1:00:00 – 1:00:01] Adam: It looks pretty good.
[1:00:01 – 1:00:07] Adam: Thank you, Cheap Dancer, for organizing the competition and for compiling those results for us on such short notice tonight.
[1:00:07 – 1:00:08] Adam: We really appreciate you.
[1:00:10 – 1:00:11] Adam: I think that about wraps it up for us.
[1:00:11 – 1:00:23] Adam: The steamship Wolverine is running out of coal and gravy, and we’re going to have to turn this thing back around and head back towards the Winnipeg Canoe Club headquarters for the gala.
[1:00:23 – 1:00:26] Adam: There’s a dance, I think, and a gala going on tonight.
[1:00:28 – 1:00:32] Adam: We’re both wearing our blazers, of course, as members of Tumble Home Sports Network.
[1:00:32 – 1:00:37] Adam: So we’re going to look real dapper there in the big city lights tonight.
[1:00:38 – 1:00:40] Adam: Do you have anything else to add, Jim, before we get out of here?
[1:00:41 – 1:00:41] Adam: No.
[1:00:41 – 1:00:42] Adam: All right.
[1:00:42 – 1:00:48] Adam: As we always say on Tumble Home, such and such and such and such.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:49] Adam: I can’t say this quote.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:51] Adam: I’ve messed up this quote every single time.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:54] Adam: But we always say it, though, and that’s because it’s so easy and catchy.
[1:00:55 – 1:00:57] Erik: 300 episodes, almost 300.
[1:00:57 – 1:00:59] Erik: 300 straight, we’ve been saying this.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:06] Adam: As we always say on Tomahawk Home, such sights as this are reserved for those who will suffer to behold them.
[1:01:07 – 1:01:08] Adam: Good evening and good night.
[1:01:37 – 1:01:38] UNKNOWN: Thank you.
