Episode Transcript

[0:00:27 – 0:00:36] Adam: Welcome to the season finale of Tumble Home, a Boundary Waters podcast coming to you live from Studio K on the Caydance River.
[0:00:36 – 0:00:41] Adam: This here is Adam, and with me as always is Eric.
[0:00:41 – 0:00:41] Adam: Hello, Eric.
[0:00:41 – 0:00:42] Adam: Welcome.
[0:00:42 – 0:00:44] Adam: Thank you for welcoming me.
[0:00:44 – 0:00:47] Adam: It looks like you’re reading off of a script over there.
[0:00:47 – 0:00:48] Adam: Party horn!
[0:00:48 – 0:00:50] Adam: Can you believe it?
[0:00:50 – 0:00:51] Adam: The season finale is here.
[0:00:53 – 0:00:54] Adam: On Tumble Home, episode 040.
[0:00:55 – 0:00:55] Adam: 040?
[0:00:56 – 0:00:59] Erik: I mean, seriously, did you think we’d make it to 40?
[0:00:59 – 0:01:00] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:01:00 – 0:01:02] Adam: All right, I did too.
[0:01:02 – 0:01:03] Adam: We’re going to 999.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:04] Adam: There’s no question about it.
[0:01:04 – 0:01:07] Erik: It’s going to be like Y2K when we get to 999.
[0:01:07 – 0:01:11] Erik: We’re going to break the internet when we won’t be able to figure out how to do four numbers.
[0:01:12 – 0:01:14] Adam: Yeah, well, we wouldn’t have been prepared for that.
[0:01:14 – 0:01:15] Erik: No, we’re not.
[0:01:16 – 0:01:19] Erik: So at this rate, we do maybe like 40, 50 a year.
[0:01:19 – 0:01:21] Erik: Yeah, what’s the math on that?
[0:01:21 – 0:01:23] Adam: How long would it take to get to 1,000?
[0:01:24 – 0:01:24] Adam: Two years.
[0:01:24 – 0:01:26] Adam: 20 years, minimum.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:28] Adam: 25 years on the long end.
[0:01:28 – 0:01:29] Erik: Yep.
[0:01:29 – 0:01:32] Erik: 20 years from now, we’ll be looking back.
[0:01:32 – 0:01:32] Adam: 2048.
[0:01:32 – 0:01:37] Adam: Maybe we’ll just call it by 2050, we’ll get to 999.
[0:01:37 – 0:01:39] Erik: 2048 is 30 years from now.
[0:01:39 – 0:01:42] Adam: Oh, well, for sure by then.
[0:01:42 – 0:01:42] Adam: 2038.
[0:01:43 – 0:01:43] Erik: Okay.
[0:01:44 – 0:01:49] Erik: We’ll have to come back after your first child’s graduation and record episode 1000.
[0:01:50 – 0:01:50] Adam: Wow.
[0:01:51 – 0:01:51] Adam: Boom.
[0:01:52 – 0:01:52] Adam: It’s going to happen.
[0:01:53 – 0:01:54] Adam: I can feel it.
[0:01:54 – 0:01:54] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:54 – 0:01:59] Adam: This is a very special episode of Tumble Home, and we have some special guests in the studio with us.
[0:02:01 – 0:02:01] Adam: Hi.
[0:02:02 – 0:02:04] Adam: Two wives.
[0:02:07 – 0:02:10] Erik: Two giggling wives.
[0:02:10 – 0:02:11] Erik: Which, you know, we should talk about that.
[0:02:11 – 0:02:13] Adam: You’ve already contributed more than Brother Andrew.
[0:02:13 – 0:02:14] Erik: Wives.
[0:02:14 – 0:02:14] Erik: Wives.
[0:02:16 – 0:02:16] Erik: Wives.
[0:02:17 – 0:02:18] Erik: Yeah.
[0:02:18 – 0:02:24] Erik: Last time we did back-to-back episodes, so for two weeks you were a bachelor boy.
[0:02:24 – 0:02:25] Adam: That’s right.
[0:02:25 – 0:02:27] Erik: Now you are a husband man.
[0:02:27 – 0:02:28] Adam: I’m a husband man.
[0:02:28 – 0:02:29] Erik: How does that feel?
[0:02:29 – 0:02:30] Adam: Feels good.
[0:02:30 – 0:02:30] Adam: Yeah?
[0:02:31 – 0:02:31] Adam: No regrets?
[0:02:32 – 0:02:32] Adam: No.
[0:02:32 – 0:02:33] Adam: Oh, absolutely not.
[0:02:33 – 0:02:36] Adam: We’re many miles of paddling ahead of us.
[0:02:36 – 0:02:36] Erik: Cool.
[0:02:37 – 0:02:37] Erik: Yeah.
[0:02:37 – 0:02:44] Erik: I love how many times you were pointing out on your wedding day, why is everybody trying to tell me that I can still back out?
[0:02:45 – 0:02:45] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:46 – 0:02:48] Erik: Just like a sick joke on a wedding day.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:48] Erik: It’s a terrible joke.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:49] Erik: Still back out.
[0:02:50 – 0:02:52] Erik: I’ve been married for five years happily.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:54] Erik: You didn’t hear me make that comment once.
[0:02:54 – 0:02:55] Adam: You didn’t.
[0:02:55 – 0:02:56] Adam: I did not.
[0:02:56 – 0:02:56] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:56 – 0:03:00] Adam: I didn’t get that joke at all, but numerous people are saying that.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:00] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:01] Erik: There’s still time.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:04] Adam: They’re also saying stuff like, you’ve got to eat herring on your wedding day.
[0:03:04 – 0:03:06] Adam: It’s good luck.
[0:03:06 – 0:03:06] Adam: You did.
[0:03:07 – 0:03:08] Adam: I did eat the herring, though.
[0:03:08 – 0:03:08] Adam: That made sense.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:10] Erik: So far, so good.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:11] Erik: Yeah.
[0:03:13 – 0:03:16] Erik: So, yes, you have been married since the last time we’ve been here.
[0:03:17 – 0:03:19] Erik: Yeah, she put her ring on it.
[0:03:20 – 0:03:21] Erik: You put a ring on it.
[0:03:21 – 0:03:22] Adam: Wait, is that how that works?
[0:03:23 – 0:03:23] Adam: I’m wearing a ring.
[0:03:24 – 0:03:24] Erik: Yeah.
[0:03:25 – 0:03:25] Erik: Is that your ring?
[0:03:25 – 0:03:28] Adam: Yeah, it’s a silicone ring.
[0:03:29 – 0:03:33] Erik: Oh, I swear I was… Oh, did I have her ring?
[0:03:33 – 0:03:35] Erik: Because the one I had was not silver.
[0:03:35 – 0:03:37] Adam: Yeah, the one for the ceremony was the gold ring.
[0:03:37 – 0:03:41] Adam: That’s Natalie’s great-grandfather’s ring.
[0:03:41 – 0:03:41] Erik: Oh, wow.
[0:03:41 – 0:03:43] Adam: And she’s got the great-grandmother’s ring.
[0:03:44 – 0:03:45] Adam: It’s a matching set.
[0:03:45 – 0:03:49] Adam: They’re beautiful rings, but mine just is a little loose, and I will not wear it in the kitchen.
[0:03:49 – 0:03:53] Adam: I was going to say, that’s your day-to-day… Or out paddling, so…
[0:03:53 – 0:03:56] Erik: You don’t want to get that Jimmy Fallon ring avulsion.
[0:03:56 – 0:03:57] Erik: Or that, yeah.
[0:03:58 – 0:03:58] Erik: My gosh.
[0:03:58 – 0:04:01] Erik: I really like the skin on my ring finger.
[0:04:01 – 0:04:05] Erik: I’d prefer it if it didn’t get removed in a foul kitchen accident.
[0:04:05 – 0:04:05] Erik: Foul.
[0:04:07 – 0:04:14] Erik: With that, we are also, not also, but to begin with, sponsored by Clearwater Historic Lodge and Outfitters.
[0:04:15 – 0:04:18] Erik: And, I mean, boy, oh, boy, this is just luck of the draw.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:33] Erik: But just think how fortunate this person is going to feel that their beer sponsorship occurred on episode 40, the ultimate, not penultimate, ultimate season finale.
[0:04:33 – 0:04:35] Adam: Pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew.
[0:04:35 – 0:04:36] Adam: Season one.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:48] Erik: We’ve got some Incarnation India Pale Ale from St. Louis, Missouri, which is also where Jake’s from.
[0:04:49 – 0:04:49] Erik: Thanks, Jake.
[0:04:49 – 0:04:56] Erik: We’re going to go for maybe the best stereo cracking of a beer.
[0:04:56 – 0:04:57] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:04:57 – 0:04:58] Adam: Cheers.
[0:05:01 – 0:05:02] Erik: Oh, maybe the worst.
[0:05:03 – 0:05:06] Erik: But it is brought to you by Jake from St. Louis.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:09] Erik: This is a four-hands brewing company.
[0:05:10 – 0:05:12] Erik: This looks like something special.
[0:05:18 – 0:05:20] Adam: Holy moly, hot dog.
[0:05:21 – 0:05:21] Adam: Yeah.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:23] Adam: That is something special.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:24] Erik: That is something special.
[0:05:24 – 0:05:27] Adam: That’s season finale-esque right there.
[0:05:27 – 0:05:31] Erik: It’s suggested that we pair this with a spicy food or grilled beef.
[0:05:32 – 0:05:32] Erik: All right.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:38] Adam: We don’t have either of those, but it is in fact… Not yet.
[0:05:38 – 0:05:38] Adam: The night is young.
[0:05:38 – 0:05:39] Adam: A delicious IPA.
[0:05:41 – 0:05:42] Adam: Thanks, Jake.
[0:05:43 – 0:05:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:05:43 – 0:05:46] Erik: Well done, Jake.
[0:05:46 – 0:05:47] Erik: He sent me an email.
[0:05:47 – 0:05:47] Erik: Oh, boy.
[0:05:48 – 0:05:53] Erik: And also in advance of sending the beer to let me know to keep my eyes out for it.
[0:05:54 – 0:05:56] Erik: I think he’s been the first one who’s actually shipped beer.
[0:05:57 – 0:05:58] Adam: Just straight up.
[0:05:58 – 0:05:58] Erik: Yeah.
[0:05:58 – 0:06:01] Erik: Just wanted to let me know to keep my eyes out for that.
[0:06:01 – 0:06:02] Erik: Do we have the email?
[0:06:03 – 0:06:04] Erik: Yeah.
[0:06:04 – 0:06:09] Erik: I don’t want to necessarily read the whole thing, but there was one part of it that he came up…
[0:06:11 – 0:06:16] Erik: I think we’ve kind of talked about it before, but it did resonate with me because this has happened before.
[0:06:16 – 0:06:24] Erik: And this happened up on the monument portage between Otter Track and Swamp, I believe.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:06:26 – 0:06:53] Erik: border swamp lake not uh mid gunflint trail swamp there’s many swamps many swamps although it is not a swamp and uh so they were double portaging hauled over um gear and then went back for the canoe and upon returning to the canoe found it it was gone oh yeah and uh could you imagine that’s like literally one of my worst nightmares yeah and it’s happened
[0:06:54 – 0:06:54] Erik: Oh, it has.
[0:06:54 – 0:07:02] Erik: And he eventually, by doing a little bit of bushwhacking along the shoreline, was able to kind of get at the boat.
[0:07:02 – 0:07:10] Erik: But it sounded like the shoreline was pretty treacherous and mucky and pretty much ended up going almost all the way in to get at the boat.
[0:07:10 – 0:07:14] Erik: But chest deep in muck is the quote there.
[0:07:15 – 0:07:19] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know what else you would do if you were just to lose a boat.
[0:07:20 – 0:07:26] Erik: But yeah, we lost a boat up in Quantico and fortunately we had a solo to go and retrieve it.
[0:07:26 – 0:07:29] Adam: Yeah, the rescue boat to go get the other boat.
[0:07:29 – 0:07:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:07:29 – 0:07:32] Erik: Just always travel with a rescue boat.
[0:07:33 – 0:07:35] Erik: Even if you don’t need it, just trail one behind.
[0:07:35 – 0:07:39] Erik: Or you can just pull your canoe up on the portage far enough.
[0:07:39 – 0:07:44] Adam: Or just, yeah, here’s what you want to do is make sure you pull that boat all the way up out of the water.
[0:07:45 – 0:07:45] Adam: Yeah.
[0:07:46 – 0:07:52] Adam: If even a little inch of the hull is touching the water, somehow the waves will rocket free from whatever it’s sitting on.
[0:07:53 – 0:07:53] Erik: Yes.
[0:07:53 – 0:07:54] Adam: It will happen sooner or later.
[0:07:55 – 0:08:05] Erik: I almost always just tie a canoe off in camp now, too, because I’m, like, deathly afraid of waking up to no canoes on an island in the middle of Brule.
[0:08:06 – 0:08:07] Adam: Yeah, what would you do?
[0:08:08 – 0:08:09] Erik: Hang out and wait.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:12] Adam: Start rationing your pizza biters, that’s for sure.
[0:08:12 – 0:08:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:13 – 0:08:14] Erik: Yell at a passerby.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:16] Erik: Help!
[0:08:17 – 0:08:17] Erik: Jeez.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:19] Adam: All right.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:20] Adam: Should capture that and loop it.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:21] Adam: Help!
[0:08:21 – 0:08:22] Adam: Help!
[0:08:23 – 0:08:23] Adam: All right.
[0:08:23 – 0:08:32] Adam: Well, coming up on tonight’s season finale episode, we’re talking your, obviously, the big question of the year.
[0:08:32 – 0:08:33] Adam: Q-O-T-Y.
[0:08:34 – 0:08:35] Adam: What’s the highlight of your season?
[0:08:36 – 0:08:37] Adam: 2018 recap.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:38] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:38 – 0:08:39] Adam: Tell us about your season.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:48] Adam: So we’re going to let you know what we thought was the highlights of our season, trip-wise, gear-wise, thought-wise.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:54] Adam: Also, talking shutdown season, we had the canoe moving party last night.
[0:08:54 – 0:08:57] Adam: It’s a big annual event on the Gunflint Trail.
[0:08:57 – 0:09:02] Adam: There’s always a landmark that kind of signals the end of one season and the beginning of another.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:04] Adam: It’s a transitional period.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:07] Adam: We’re talking…
[0:09:10 – 0:09:11] Adam: 40 years of the Boundary Waters.
[0:09:11 – 0:09:11] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:11 – 0:09:12] Adam: On episode 40.
[0:09:13 – 0:09:16] Erik: We did not plan that, but it really did… Yeah, we did.
[0:09:17 – 0:09:17] Erik: Yeah, we did.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:24] Erik: Last January, when we were brainstorming, we figured we had to start it by this certain day so we could end as close… We did the math.
[0:09:24 – 0:09:26] Erik: …to the 40th anniversary.
[0:09:26 – 0:09:27] Adam: So, yeah, maybe we start there.
[0:09:28 – 0:09:28] Adam: What do you think?
[0:09:28 – 0:09:31] Adam: October 21st, 1978.
[0:09:31 – 0:09:31] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:32 – 0:09:39] Erik: On the way back when… Jimmy Carter signed into law the Boundary Waters…
[0:09:40 – 0:10:00] Erik: Act and essentially turned the 1968 Wilderness Act into an even more protective act in terms of designating the lines, keeping out motors from certain areas, snowmobiles, just making it more clean cut because there were still some things that were up in the air.
[0:10:01 – 0:10:02] Erik: So, yeah, we’re…
[0:10:02 – 0:10:05] Erik: I mean, I had seen that kind of over the course of this summer.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:07] Adam: Within three days, we are doing this recording within…
[0:10:08 – 0:10:08] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:14] Adam: 40 years and three days from the formation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
[0:10:14 – 0:10:14] Erik: Yeah.
[0:10:14 – 0:10:22] Erik: And I was out today paddling for… We’ll talk about this a little bit too, just how crummy this fall has been.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:22] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:24] Erik: But we were out just…
[0:10:25 – 0:10:28] Erik: Five hours ago, I was out on Duncan Lake just paddling.
[0:10:29 – 0:10:39] Erik: And yeah, it’s, I mean, just getting back to basics, it’s pretty amazing to have something like that just available to you, especially in our backyard, but to everybody.
[0:10:39 – 0:10:46] Adam: It seems like 40 years is like, to me, it always seemed like the Boundary Waters was around a lot longer than that.
[0:10:46 – 0:10:50] Adam: But really, 40 years is not that long of a time frame at all.
[0:10:51 – 0:10:52] Adam: It’s still a new park.
[0:10:52 – 0:10:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:10:53 – 0:10:54] Adam: You even messed up what 30 years was.
[0:10:55 – 0:10:56] Adam: Yeah, I’m not good at math.
[0:10:56 – 0:10:57] Adam: I’ve never been good at the numbers.
[0:10:58 – 0:10:59] Erik: 40 years from now.
[0:10:59 – 0:10:59] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:00 – 0:11:02] Erik: We’ll be on episode 2000.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:03] Adam: Yeah, see?
[0:11:03 – 0:11:03] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:11:04 – 0:11:07] Adam: So we’re kind of getting in on the ground floor on this park, honestly.
[0:11:08 – 0:11:11] Erik: That’s what it’s all about, getting in on the ground floor.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:14] Erik: Taking the most advantage of this park as possible.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:19] Adam: When I first took a trip up here, it felt like an ancient park that had always been there.
[0:11:19 – 0:11:21] Adam: And in a lot of ways, it was.
[0:11:21 – 0:11:23] Adam: It was just not in its current form, you know.
[0:11:24 – 0:11:48] Erik: yeah so episode 40 celebrating the 40th anniversary congratulations bwca wilderness for turning 40 you made it to 40 you made it to 40 not over the hill yet i believe that’s like a 50 thing right i don’t know yeah no 50 is the new 40 when do you get the over the hill cards with the schlocky jokes um 60 now 60 what do you think
[0:11:49 – 0:11:50] Erik: Peanut hot?
[0:11:51 – 0:11:52] Adam: 50 is the over the hill now?
[0:11:54 – 0:11:55] Erik: Holy moly.
[0:11:55 – 0:11:56] Erik: Boundary Waters is still young.
[0:11:57 – 0:12:00] Adam: Yeah, I mean, honestly, I’m almost as old as the Boundary Waters.
[0:12:01 – 0:12:02] Adam: That seems crazy.
[0:12:02 – 0:12:03] SPEAKER_00: Wow.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:03] Erik: Yeah.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:08] Erik: Well, once the one in the BWCA has its midlife crisis, you’ll know.
[0:12:08 – 0:12:11] Erik: It’s time for yours.
[0:12:11 – 0:12:17] Adam: I’m going to buy some of those pontoons for a boat and then get a fly rod.
[0:12:17 – 0:12:18] Adam: Yeah, there you go.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:19] Adam: So I can stand up and fish.
[0:12:19 – 0:12:21] Adam: I’m going to catch smallies on the fly.
[0:12:22 – 0:12:26] Erik: Yeah, so 40 years, pretty awesome.
[0:12:27 – 0:12:37] Erik: Talking about how we were out on the water today, we’ve talked about this in the past, how it’s really cool that you can just throw down and be like, hey, let’s go paddle because it’s nice.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:38] Erik: Yeah.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:47] Erik: And this fall has been definitely one of the worst that I can remember in terms of paddling quality and accessibility.
[0:12:47 – 0:12:47] Adam: Yeah.
[0:12:48 – 0:13:11] Adam: i love to curse at the wind but i’ve been cursing at the wind a lot lately it’s been so windy like you know windy to the point where it takes your hat off your head in a parking lot you’re like or take a look around or takes a tree down or a hundred a third of the a third of the trees up here were knocked down you know reference episode 37 for that uh for that fact that’s a tree fact
[0:13:12 – 0:13:22] Erik: Yeah, so I’ve been up here almost 10 years, and it was by far the worst fall, just weather-wise.
[0:13:22 – 0:13:25] Erik: Colors were amazing, but weather, there wasn’t really much you could do on the water.
[0:13:25 – 0:13:26] Erik: Yeah, the tamaracks were great.
[0:13:26 – 0:13:28] Erik: There’s still some nice tammy colors out there.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:30] Adam: Yeah, you can peep some needles.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:32] Erik: Hashtag tammy hunters.
[0:13:32 – 0:13:33] Adam: Hashtag needle peepers.
[0:13:35 – 0:13:46] Erik: But I don’t understand, like, how did we go from what I would say was one of the most exceptionally sunny and dry summers to just, like, the third week of September, it just flipped.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:47] Erik: The pendulum.
[0:13:47 – 0:13:48] Erik: And it was a month.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:50] Erik: The pendulum swings.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:54] Erik: Maybe on one hand, I can count the number of like just sunny, nice, calm days.
[0:13:55 – 0:13:57] Erik: We were always kind of like teetering.
[0:13:57 – 0:14:01] Erik: There was like a week where every morning you’d wake up and there’d be like an inch of snow on the ground.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:02] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:04] Erik: And it would slowly melt over the course of the day.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:06] Erik: I forgot who.
[0:14:07 – 0:14:15] Erik: I think it was a friend of ours up on the trail who had some folks from out of state visiting and they were around during that and they were like, so…
[0:14:16 – 0:14:18] Erik: Is there always snow on the ground like every morning up here?
[0:14:18 – 0:14:19] Erik: Is that just what it does?
[0:14:20 – 0:14:21] Erik: Well, it’s a little early, but…
[0:14:21 – 0:14:22] Erik: Pretty much.
[0:14:22 – 0:14:24] Erik: Yeah, it was like, it wasn’t ever snowing to accumulate.
[0:14:25 – 0:14:26] Erik: It was just kind of always snowing.
[0:14:26 – 0:14:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:27 – 0:14:31] Adam: And at night it would… We had a little, you know, nephew built a little tiny snowman on the porch.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:36] Adam: And then even like the last bit of its thorax survived for like a week.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:37] Erik: Yeah.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:40] Erik: How many total snowmen did he build?
[0:14:40 – 0:14:47] Adam: Just the little one here, but then he had one up at Poplar House at the wedding, too, and that one’s probably still there.
[0:14:47 – 0:14:48] Adam: It was enormous.
[0:14:48 – 0:14:49] Adam: He was making snow angels.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:51] Adam: He got his dream.
[0:14:51 – 0:14:56] Adam: He got the snow angels, the sledding, and going on a canoe trip with the uncles.
[0:14:56 – 0:14:56] Erik: Yep.
[0:14:57 – 0:14:57] Adam: Pretty exciting.
[0:14:58 – 0:15:00] Adam: That’s really the only paddling I’ve been doing lately.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:02] Adam: We took Chester out on a little canoe ride.
[0:15:03 – 0:15:05] Adam: So just really a photo op.
[0:15:05 – 0:15:06] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:08] Erik: So yeah, it was a crummy fall.
[0:15:08 – 0:15:23] Erik: I mean, we’ve been talking about how there might be this late fall paddling excursion that we go out on, but I think based on the amount of ice I’ve been seeing on some of the, not even ponds, but like smallish lakes up here.
[0:15:23 – 0:15:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:32] Erik: And the fact that I was out on Duncan Lake today and found ice on a pretty large lake.
[0:15:32 – 0:15:35] Adam: Yeah, that’s concerning that he saw it on Duncan.
[0:15:35 – 0:15:44] Adam: It’s one thing to see it on Wampus or on the little pond over on our land, which usually doesn’t have water in the fall, but it’s got water that’s frozen right now.
[0:15:44 – 0:15:51] Erik: Yeah, it’s been raining a lot, so that’s good for water levels, but there’s a little… Good for potential pond hockey, but not good for paddling.
[0:15:52 – 0:15:55] Erik: We’ll get some sweet field audio if we get some ice skating in.
[0:15:56 – 0:16:07] Erik: So, yeah, I mean, unfortunately, it’s been, second year in a row, a really brief fall, basically bordering on winter here, but we’re here to talk about…
[0:16:08 – 0:16:11] Erik: The open water season that everybody else has had.
[0:16:11 – 0:16:16] Erik: Do we want to start with some of their comments about the question of the year?
[0:16:16 – 0:16:18] Erik: Or is there something that I skipped?
[0:16:21 – 0:16:23] Adam: Well, we were going to, yeah, I don’t know.
[0:16:23 – 0:16:30] Adam: We could talk about the, you know, from the Man Chain trip, you’d posted those nice videos, the time-lapse videos of us paddling.
[0:16:30 – 0:16:31] Erik: Oh, those quick videos, yes.
[0:16:31 – 0:16:35] Adam: Yeah, I want to get into those quick videos before we get into the big topic of this week’s show.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:36] Adam: Okay.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:38] Adam: So I love those videos.
[0:16:38 – 0:16:40] Adam: I was really happy to see you had reposted them.
[0:16:40 – 0:16:46] Adam: If anybody hasn’t seen them, you’ve got to get on the Facebook page, I believe, and check those time-lapse videos out.
[0:16:47 – 0:16:54] Adam: Eric sets up his fancy camera in the back of the boat and then sets it to take a picture every one second.
[0:16:55 – 0:16:56] Adam: Or is it three seconds?
[0:16:56 – 0:16:57] Erik: I don’t remember exactly.
[0:16:57 – 0:16:59] Erik: It’s between one and three.
[0:16:59 – 0:17:00] Erik: But yeah, it’s like on a tripod.
[0:17:01 – 0:17:03] Adam: Right in front of my face, like at canoe level.
[0:17:03 – 0:17:06] Adam: Yeah, it’s got to be relatively calm, but it’ll smooth itself out.
[0:17:07 – 0:17:08] Erik: Yeah, you can’t do it on a windy day.
[0:17:09 – 0:17:10] Erik: That’s a little too stressful.
[0:17:10 – 0:17:15] Erik: Because even if you paddle a little too hard off to one side, the tripod will kind of tip a little bit.
[0:17:15 – 0:17:38] Adam: yeah you don’t want that tripod moving no so he had a really good one from the man chain that you’d posted and one of my favorite videos of all time is of you and brother andrew paddling down this man very cool video and then somebody on social media was commenting how you don’t switch sides the entire yeah i believe that lake is i don’t know six miles long
[0:17:39 – 0:17:43] Erik: Yeah, I think that was… Four, six, something like that.
[0:17:43 – 0:17:44] Adam: It’s a long lake.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:49] Adam: And like, yeah, you guys don’t switch sides the entire time, which is exactly how we paddle.
[0:17:49 – 0:17:50] Adam: I don’t know what other people are doing.
[0:17:51 – 0:17:51] Erik: I think they’re switching.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:53] Erik: I guess, yeah.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:54] Erik: Clearly, people are switching.
[0:17:54 – 0:17:55] Adam: Yeah, but you shouldn’t.
[0:17:56 – 0:17:59] Adam: Well, that’s… Find your side and stick to it.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:02] Adam: Well, yeah, I mean… And then you got to find a paddling partner in life.
[0:18:03 – 0:18:06] Adam: And they have to obviously paddle on the other side of you.
[0:18:06 – 0:18:07] Adam: Otherwise, it’s not going to work out.
[0:18:07 – 0:18:15] Adam: Like first date, I think one of the first times I met Natalie, we went for a little paddle and you’re chasing us with the drone or with the drone boys out.
[0:18:16 – 0:18:19] Adam: And obviously, I like to paddle on the left.
[0:18:19 – 0:18:23] Adam: And Natalie, I waited and Natalie started paddling on the right.
[0:18:24 – 0:18:28] Adam: And so I knew like this is going to be a good match in life because she’s a right side paddler.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:33] Adam: I’m a left, and you’re a right, so then you and me can paddle together.
[0:18:33 – 0:18:34] Erik: That’s how you can tell.
[0:18:34 – 0:18:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:35 – 0:18:43] Erik: I did two whole months in Quetico without ever switching sides, and I think maybe we switched sides for like a minute once, and it was just like, ugh.
[0:18:44 – 0:18:46] Adam: Yeah, it was coming off of Agnes Lake.
[0:18:47 – 0:18:50] Adam: We got into the final band, Agnes, which is where we lost the canoe.
[0:18:51 – 0:18:52] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:18:52 – 0:18:54] Adam: That was the little portage landing coming up.
[0:18:54 – 0:18:56] Adam: And that’s why, probably, because we had switched sides.
[0:18:56 – 0:18:57] Adam: Yeah.
[0:18:57 – 0:18:58] Adam: Because I was like, oh, I’m a little sore.
[0:18:58 – 0:18:59] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:18:59 – 0:19:00] Adam: I didn’t sleep well or something.
[0:19:00 – 0:19:01] Adam: I’m like, let’s try switching.
[0:19:01 – 0:19:02] Adam: Yeah.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:06] Adam: And I went to the right side, and it kind of felt like I was paddling upside down.
[0:19:06 – 0:19:08] Adam: It feels like you’re riding left-handed.
[0:19:08 – 0:19:08] Adam: Right.
[0:19:08 – 0:19:10] Erik: It’s almost worse than that.
[0:19:10 – 0:19:10] Erik: It’s because it’s more of your body.
[0:19:10 – 0:19:13] Adam: Yeah, because I can ride left-handed, but I cannot paddle on the right side.
[0:19:15 – 0:19:15] Adam: I cannot.
[0:19:16 – 0:19:17] Adam: I’m like paddling.
[0:19:18 – 0:19:19] Adam: I’m not doing a C-stroke.
[0:19:19 – 0:19:23] Adam: It’s more like a Z-stroke or a Y-stroke or something.
[0:19:23 – 0:19:24] Adam: It’s totally wrong.
[0:19:24 – 0:19:27] Erik: Yeah, it’s two people both riding with their feet.
[0:19:27 – 0:19:28] Erik: Their wrong hands.
[0:19:28 – 0:19:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:19:28 – 0:19:29] Adam: With their feet.
[0:19:29 – 0:19:30] Adam: Their left foot.
[0:19:30 – 0:19:32] Erik: And you’re with somebody else who’s just as awkward.
[0:19:33 – 0:19:40] Adam: And I thought, and Josh, our buddy Josh had brought this up too, talking about, do you like being in the front of the boat or the back of the boat?
[0:19:40 – 0:19:43] Adam: Do you like to pedal on the right or the left?
[0:19:44 – 0:19:48] Adam: And so it was a topic we had been kind of kicking around all season that we really never got to.
[0:19:48 – 0:19:51] Adam: So I just feel like we should bring this up before we really…
[0:19:52 – 0:19:56] Adam: Get to the main stuff because once we get to the main stuff, we’re not going back to the appetizers.
[0:19:56 – 0:19:57] Adam: We got to get these aperitifs out.
[0:19:57 – 0:19:57] Adam: We can go back next year.
[0:19:57 – 0:19:59] Erik: We can talk about front or back.
[0:19:59 – 0:20:06] Erik: We’re going to really have to plumb the depths of the minutiae of paddling if we want to have 20 seasons of us recording on our deathbeds.
[0:20:08 – 0:20:09] Erik: Front or back?
[0:20:09 – 0:20:11] Erik: White canoe or red canoe?
[0:20:12 – 0:20:12] Erik: What’s your call?
[0:20:13 – 0:20:14] Erik: But you can talk about it.
[0:20:14 – 0:20:15] Erik: That’s fine.
[0:20:15 – 0:20:31] Adam: Yeah, but anyways, where I come down, sure, it’s good to be an all-around paddler, but really to truly reach your full potential as a distance paddler, you need to focus on one side and get all your muscles configured for that one side.
[0:20:31 – 0:20:32] Adam: Am I wrong?
[0:20:32 – 0:20:34] Erik: No, that’s how I do it.
[0:20:34 – 0:20:34] Adam: You agree.
[0:20:34 – 0:20:34] Adam: I know it.
[0:20:35 – 0:20:36] Erik: Yes, I would.
[0:20:36 – 0:20:44] Erik: But I also, if it works for somebody else to switch so that they can stay fresh and that’s the way that they’re used to it.
[0:20:44 – 0:20:48] Erik: My argument for the person that was questioning me was that I just got used to paddling on the right side.
[0:20:48 – 0:20:49] Erik: Right.
[0:20:49 – 0:20:51] Adam: And now the left feels super weird.
[0:20:51 – 0:20:58] Adam: And if I paddle a solo canoe, I do like three or four quick on each side and then I’m constantly switching in a solo.
[0:20:58 – 0:20:59] Adam: I don’t try and J stroke.
[0:20:59 – 0:21:01] Adam: You can, but you’re going really slow then.
[0:21:01 – 0:21:06] Erik: I had Jay struck in a solo still, but that’s a topic of conversation for the solo episode.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:09] Adam: All right, so we’re getting off topic a little bit, but I just wanted to bring that up briefly.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:16] Adam: So I think it’s time for us to get into the big question of the year on Tumble Home.
[0:21:16 – 0:21:19] Erik: Q-O-T-Y.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:22] Erik: I almost said W. We’ve done those.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:35] Erik: So we’re going to get into the final theme song for Digital Facebook.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:40] Adam: Digital Facebook.
[0:21:40 – 0:21:41] Adam: Wow.
[0:21:42 – 0:21:44] Erik: That was pretty incredible.
[0:21:45 – 0:21:47] Adam: Special edition Digital Facebook.
[0:21:48 – 0:21:50] Erik: Extended version director’s cut there.
[0:21:51 – 0:21:54] Erik: So yeah, if you’re still here and you…
[0:21:54 – 0:21:57] Erik: are still wondering what the question of the year was.
[0:21:58 – 0:22:01] Erik: It was basically just how was your trip out on the water this year?
[0:22:02 – 0:22:06] Erik: And these are the responses that we had from the folks out on Facebook.
[0:22:08 – 0:22:09] Erik: I’ll start out with Alan.
[0:22:10 – 0:22:13] Erik: Mid-August, looped seagull to sag via Red Rock.
[0:22:14 – 0:22:17] Erik: Great trip with two of my kids, 13 and 6.
[0:22:18 – 0:22:23] Erik: Highlights were spending time with them and finding a great blueberry patch on Alpine.
[0:22:24 – 0:22:29] Erik: Low light was coming down with a cold slash fever towards the end of the trip.
[0:22:29 – 0:22:30] Erik: Yeah, blueberry fever.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:31] Erik: Blueberry fever.
[0:22:32 – 0:22:33] Erik: It was a pretty good blueberry year.
[0:22:33 – 0:22:35] Adam: I bet there’s a lot of blueberries out there.
[0:22:35 – 0:22:36] Adam: Not anymore.
[0:22:36 – 0:22:38] Adam: Probably ate so much your poop is blue.
[0:22:39 – 0:23:01] Erik: i learned that camping with little kids means dad has to do all the work yeah can’t wait for future adventures yeah you gotta get a harness for the kids yeah you gotta get a blueberry picking harness for them make them carry their own weight and blueberries that’s a nice solid loop with like two or three if i’m remembering correctly like really pretty straightforward and short portages
[0:23:01 – 0:23:02] Erik: Lots of paddling.
[0:23:03 – 0:23:04] Erik: A lot of moonscape.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:06] Erik: Yeah, a little bit of moonscape out there on Alpine.
[0:23:07 – 0:23:09] Erik: That stuff gets me turned around.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:10] Erik: It’s coming back.
[0:23:10 – 0:23:10] Adam: Yeah.
[0:23:12 – 0:23:22] Adam: Kurt’s Inn took my wife and daughter to the southeast corner of IMA, the first site I ever visited in the BWCA 22 years ago before I knew either of them.
[0:23:22 – 0:23:23] Adam: Well, that’s special, though.
[0:23:24 – 0:23:25] Adam: I’m going to share those favorite sites.
[0:23:26 – 0:23:33] Erik: Yeah, I was thinking about that today as I was portaging out of Duncan with my wife, who I had gotten done paddling with.
[0:23:34 – 0:23:37] Erik: That was the first portage I had ever taken on an overnight trip.
[0:23:37 – 0:23:43] Adam: We’re truly lucky to have these beautiful and smart and heroic wives.
[0:23:44 – 0:23:48] Erik: Oh, heroic, I think might be the best word that you could have used.
[0:23:50 – 0:23:51] Adam: They’re such strong paddlers, too.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:53] Erik: And just strong women in general.
[0:23:53 – 0:23:53] Adam: Yeah.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:58] Erik: Nick, I want you to get back to us.
[0:23:59 – 0:24:08] Erik: We probably won’t get back to you until we resume recording in December, but he really teased us here.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:10] Erik: One final trip tomorrow.
[0:24:11 – 0:24:14] Adam: It’s got the little dot, dot, dots that are moving like he’s still typing.
[0:24:15 – 0:24:15] Erik: What’s he doing?
[0:24:16 – 0:24:19] Erik: He’s typing on a… One final trip of the year, I hope.
[0:24:20 – 0:24:22] Adam: Maybe he’s going all year.
[0:24:23 – 0:24:24] Adam: One final trip.
[0:24:24 – 0:24:26] Adam: We’ll hear back from Nick next May.
[0:24:26 – 0:24:26] Erik: Yeah.
[0:24:28 – 0:24:28] Adam: Travis.
[0:24:29 – 0:24:32] Adam: First trip to the BWCA was in August.
[0:24:33 – 0:24:36] Adam: I can’t believe it took me 38 years to find this beautiful place.
[0:24:36 – 0:24:41] Adam: I’ve gone three times now, and I already plan on planning the first trip next season.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:43] Adam: Last trip was last week.
[0:24:44 – 0:24:45] Adam: Poplar to Gaskin.
[0:24:45 – 0:24:46] Adam: What a trip.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:47] Adam: Did you get Gaskin 038?
[0:24:49 – 0:24:51] Erik: I don’t know any of the numbers.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:51] Erik: We were talking about that.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:53] Adam: Or is it Gaskin 046, I think.
[0:24:54 – 0:24:56] Adam: The poor weather kept us from going to Winchell.
[0:24:57 – 0:24:57] Erik: Oh.
[0:24:58 – 0:25:00] Adam: But I will make it there at some point.
[0:25:00 – 0:25:00] Adam: There you go.
[0:25:01 – 0:25:03] Adam: It doesn’t matter if you made it there on this trip or not.
[0:25:04 – 0:25:05] Adam: You will make it there, Travis.
[0:25:05 – 0:25:06] Adam: We believe in you.
[0:25:06 – 0:25:07] Erik: Travis, that’s pretty amazing.
[0:25:07 – 0:25:10] Erik: First trip was in August, and he’s been three times now already.
[0:25:11 – 0:25:11] Adam: Yeah.
[0:25:11 – 0:25:12] Erik: That’s awesome.
[0:25:12 – 0:25:13] Adam: He’s got the itch.
[0:25:14 – 0:25:14] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:17] Adam: That happens when you swim in Gaskin.
[0:25:18 – 0:25:20] Erik: That’s just a Gaskin thing.
[0:25:20 – 0:25:20] Adam: Yeah.
[0:25:20 – 0:25:21] Adam: The Gaskin itch.
[0:25:22 – 0:25:24] Erik: Josh got in two and a half trips.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:28] Erik: Trip with my daughters on Kawishawi was rained out after a night.
[0:25:29 – 0:25:30] Erik: Yeah, that can happen.
[0:25:30 – 0:25:32] Erik: They were disappointed we never got to portage.
[0:25:33 – 0:25:36] Erik: That’s, yeah, keep them interested in that portaging.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:41] Erik: Trip with eldest son through 14 to Ferry was a great short trip.
[0:25:42 – 0:25:46] Erik: Long trip with both sons and my pop was through Winchell and Omega.
[0:25:46 – 0:25:47] Erik: That was the highlight lesson.
[0:25:48 – 0:25:50] Erik: Never undervalue layover days.
[0:25:51 – 0:25:57] Erik: Our layover on Omega was filled with great fishing, lazy swimming, lots of fun, and an epic nap.
[0:25:57 – 0:25:58] Erik: Ooh, yeah.
[0:25:58 – 0:25:58] Erik: I like that.
[0:25:59 – 0:26:00] Erik: Epic napping.
[0:26:00 – 0:26:01] Adam: Hopefully some reading, too.
[0:26:02 – 0:26:05] Erik: Yeah, that could be a conversation for next season.
[0:26:05 – 0:26:07] Adam: Yeah, that would be a good future conversation.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:10] Erik: Layover days, lazy layover days and swimming.
[0:26:11 – 0:26:11] Adam: Reading.
[0:26:11 – 0:26:12] Erik: Reading.
[0:26:12 – 0:26:14] Erik: What are you reading in camp this year?
[0:26:14 – 0:26:15] Adam: Yeah, what’s your camp book?
[0:26:16 – 0:26:19] Adam: Andy, early August, snowbank to lake one.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:25] Adam: After my last few trips being sunny and perfect, we got to experience a little of everything this year.
[0:26:25 – 0:26:33] Adam: The sunny, nice day ending with a thunderstorm that lasted all night, a cold, misty day, another nice day, then more rain and wind.
[0:26:34 – 0:26:35] Adam: It was fun.
[0:26:35 – 0:26:38] Adam: It’s a different strategy than when the weather is unpredictable.
[0:26:39 – 0:26:40] Adam: Things I learned.
[0:26:41 – 0:26:44] Adam: I already knew this, but a fire is not out until you can touch it.
[0:26:45 – 0:26:49] Adam: We pulled into a campsite and the wind picked up, blowing what we thought was a dead fire to life.
[0:26:50 – 0:26:50] Adam: Hmm.
[0:26:51 – 0:26:55] Adam: My dog does not like thunder and prefers my sleeping pad over hers.
[0:26:56 – 0:26:58] Adam: That’s probably true.
[0:26:58 – 0:27:01] Adam: Yeah, old doggies like their soft sleeping pads.
[0:27:02 – 0:27:04] Adam: Campsites of my youth are growing.
[0:27:04 – 0:27:06] Adam: Please go back into the woods for firewood.
[0:27:07 – 0:27:13] Adam: Lastly, I need to find a way to extend this loop for a few more lakes to get a few more days on the water.
[0:27:14 – 0:27:14] Adam: All right.
[0:27:15 – 0:27:20] Erik: Yeah, those campsites are getting a little big with everybody cutting down these saplings.
[0:27:20 – 0:27:22] Adam: Yeah, every year they grow by a little bit.
[0:27:24 – 0:27:26] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know what the deal was this summer.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:30] Erik: There was a ton of reports of unattended campfires.
[0:27:32 – 0:27:33] Erik: Yeah, cold to the touch.
[0:27:34 – 0:27:36] Erik: You actually have to touch it, people.
[0:27:37 – 0:27:38] Erik: Touch that log.
[0:27:38 – 0:27:39] Erik: Touch that log.
[0:27:42 – 0:27:44] Erik: Brian, two trips, the Grand Portage trip.
[0:27:44 – 0:27:47] Erik: Oh, yeah, Brian, phone that in on the…
[0:27:48 – 0:27:49] Erik: The answering machine.
[0:27:49 – 0:27:49] Adam: Answering machine.
[0:27:49 – 0:27:55] Adam: One of the few people who has their answering machine sash from season one.
[0:27:55 – 0:27:57] Adam: That’s going to be a special sash.
[0:27:57 – 0:27:58] Adam: You’re going to value that.
[0:27:58 – 0:28:00] Erik: We will be sending out sashes and pins.
[0:28:01 – 0:28:01] Adam: Yes.
[0:28:02 – 0:28:05] Erik: To phone calls and people who called in twice.
[0:28:06 – 0:28:08] Erik: And then a September trip to Lynx Lake.
[0:28:10 – 0:28:11] Erik: Do you know where Lynx is?
[0:28:12 – 0:28:12] Erik: Nope.
[0:28:13 – 0:28:15] Erik: Yeah, well, we should have done our research.
[0:28:15 – 0:28:16] Erik: Better look that one up.
[0:28:16 – 0:28:21] Erik: Highlights, completing the Grand Portage with a quick paddle on the Big Lake.
[0:28:21 – 0:28:22] Erik: That’s cool.
[0:28:22 – 0:28:24] Erik: That’s, yeah, I mean, I don’t even have that under my belt.
[0:28:25 – 0:28:25] Erik: I don’t have that sash.
[0:28:26 – 0:28:27] Erik: I don’t have that sash.
[0:28:27 – 0:28:33] Erik: Also, completing first bushwhack from Lynx to Yodeler and the fishing rewards that yielded.
[0:28:33 – 0:28:38] Erik: One more, watching a buddy who previously vowed never to return to the BWCA enjoy a trip.
[0:28:38 – 0:28:39] Erik: Man.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:43] Erik: All of those sentences are very interesting.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:46] Adam: All worthy of the highlights paragraph for sure.
[0:28:46 – 0:28:51] Erik: Yeah, I want to know more about the, well, we’ve heard about the Grand Portage.
[0:28:51 – 0:28:54] Erik: I didn’t realize that you guys quick put a dip in on the Big Lake.
[0:28:55 – 0:28:57] Erik: Or we’re bushwhacking.
[0:28:57 – 0:28:59] Erik: I need to find out where Lynx and Yodeler are.
[0:28:59 – 0:29:00] Adam: Is that PMA stuff?
[0:29:01 – 0:29:02] Erik: It sounds pretty PMA-ish.
[0:29:02 – 0:29:03] Adam: It does sound like a PMA.
[0:29:03 – 0:29:05] Adam: Did you have bushwhacking juice?
[0:29:05 – 0:29:06] Adam: You must have.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:06] Adam: I have so many questions.
[0:29:07 – 0:29:10] Erik: I also want to know who vows never to return to the Boundary Waters.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:13] Erik: And then you convince them to come back.
[0:29:13 – 0:29:14] Erik: We need to know more, Brian.
[0:29:14 – 0:29:15] Adam: This is a redemption arc.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:17] Adam: Yes, it is.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:21] Adam: We could do a whole episode just on that first paragraph.
[0:29:21 – 0:29:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:24] Erik: He’s still got low lights to go here.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:28] Erik: Losing seven fish on Lynx Lake after we tried to live well them overnight.
[0:29:29 – 0:29:29] Erik: That happens.
[0:29:29 – 0:29:30] Erik: We’ve all been there.
[0:29:30 – 0:29:34] Erik: Wind shifted and blew the water up and over the rocks that were containing them.
[0:29:34 – 0:29:40] Erik: Also paddling over four miles out of our way on McFarland at the beginning of our Grand Portage trip.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:42] Erik: See the map pictured below.
[0:29:42 – 0:29:44] Adam: Yeah, McFarland is not a fun paddle to begin with.
[0:29:45 – 0:29:46] Erik: I have no explanation.
[0:29:46 – 0:29:47] Erik: We felt pretty foolish.
[0:29:47 – 0:29:50] Erik: Yeah, you can see the out and back.
[0:29:51 – 0:29:52] Adam: Is that MS Paint?
[0:29:53 – 0:29:53] Adam: Or is that…
[0:29:54 – 0:29:55] Erik: Depends.
[0:29:55 – 0:29:56] Erik: There might be…
[0:29:56 – 0:29:57] Erik: There’s all kinds of things these days.
[0:29:57 – 0:29:58] Adam: I shouldn’t laugh.
[0:29:58 – 0:30:01] Adam: The map is accurate and I can tell exactly what happened.
[0:30:01 – 0:30:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:30:01 – 0:30:03] Adam: So, yeah, that happens.
[0:30:04 – 0:30:04] Erik: All right.
[0:30:05 – 0:30:06] Erik: And then lessons learned.
[0:30:06 – 0:30:10] Erik: Always stop to get your bearings if your gut says something doesn’t feel quite right.
[0:30:11 – 0:30:12] Adam: Easier said than done, though.
[0:30:12 – 0:30:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:30:13 – 0:30:16] Erik: Check the satellite pictures before a trip where you intend to bushwhack.
[0:30:17 – 0:30:23] Erik: We made it across a beaver pond slash bog slash marsh on our bushwhack to yodeler from Lynx.
[0:30:24 – 0:30:28] Erik: The red line in the photo below shows our track on the way there and back.
[0:30:28 – 0:30:28] Erik: Oh.
[0:30:29 – 0:30:30] Erik: Oh, dear.
[0:30:30 – 0:30:33] Erik: We got all kinds of bushwhacking photography down here.
[0:30:33 – 0:30:35] Adam: Looks like us trying to get an Asura.
[0:30:35 – 0:30:37] Erik: Yeah, basically.
[0:30:38 – 0:30:43] Erik: Yeah, so a nice little response there from Brian.
[0:30:44 – 0:30:45] Adam: Yeah, that’s A+.
[0:30:45 – 0:30:46] Erik: A-plus response.
[0:30:46 – 0:30:47] Adam: Definitely get the sash.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:49] Erik: He’s getting a sash.
[0:30:49 – 0:30:51] Adam: You’re darn tootin’.
[0:30:51 – 0:30:54] Erik: Ooh, we got a nice big response here from Jerry.
[0:30:54 – 0:30:54] Erik: Are you ready for this?
[0:30:56 – 0:30:56] Adam: Yeah, hold on.
[0:30:56 – 0:30:58] Adam: I had to wet my whistle for this one.
[0:30:58 – 0:30:59] Adam: Jerry’s in.
[0:31:00 – 0:31:02] Adam: Tripping June with a bunch of scouts.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:03] Adam: Oh, my.
[0:31:03 – 0:31:05] Adam: In parentheses and an exclamation point.
[0:31:06 – 0:31:08] Adam: Actually, they did very well.
[0:31:08 – 0:31:09] Adam: Obeyed the rules and learned a lot.
[0:31:10 – 0:31:15] Adam: The coolest part for me was seeing the change happen from total newbie to someone experienced in a week.
[0:31:16 – 0:31:18] Adam: By the exit, the boys were setting pace and navigating.
[0:31:18 – 0:31:22] Adam: We had sunny, perfect weather and lightning and thunderstorms.
[0:31:22 – 0:31:26] Adam: Got to experience both extremes and they really took some great memories home.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:32] Adam: It’s amazing to see the younger generation actually work hard for something and love it as much as I do.
[0:31:33 – 0:31:37] Adam: There is a ready chance of Boundary Waters 2020 in the troop.
[0:31:37 – 0:31:38] Adam: Huzzah!
[0:31:39 – 0:31:42] Adam: It’s definitely a different trip than taking my boys or other experienced people.
[0:31:43 – 0:31:49] Adam: But if we don’t share this area and adventure with the younger guys and girls, we aren’t really being good stewards.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:52] Adam: Anyway, any time in the BWCA is awesome.
[0:31:53 – 0:31:56] Adam: And thanks for the time you guys put into the podcast.
[0:31:56 – 0:31:57] Adam: Yada, yada.
[0:31:57 – 0:31:58] Adam: Look forward to each one.
[0:31:58 – 0:31:59] Adam: Wow, that’s nice.
[0:31:59 – 0:31:59] Adam: Thanks.
[0:31:59 – 0:32:00] Adam: Yada, yada.
[0:32:00 – 0:32:03] Adam: Thank you for the comment, Jerry, and thank you for being a good steward.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:04] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:09] Adam: It is truly the thing that we really all need to do more of, I think.
[0:32:09 – 0:32:10] Adam: That’s what we’re trying to do.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:13] Erik: Yeah, introducing more people to it, especially younger people.
[0:32:13 – 0:32:18] Erik: It should be said that you put a yada yada in in place of nothing, though.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:19] Adam: Right, right.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:22] Erik: You were just self-conscious of him complimenting the podcast.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:23] Erik: True, yeah.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:25] Erik: You didn’t replace any of his words with yada yada.
[0:32:25 – 0:32:27] Adam: No, I would never.
[0:32:27 – 0:32:32] Adam: I do add a lot to people’s comments, but I never replace or ad lib or paraphrase.
[0:32:33 – 0:32:33] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:34 – 0:32:37] Erik: Yeah, I can’t imagine being out there with scouts on a first-time trip like that.
[0:32:38 – 0:32:39] Erik: I mean, I’ve seen them out there.
[0:32:40 – 0:32:42] Erik: They seem like they can be a bit of a handful.
[0:32:42 – 0:32:46] Adam: Maybe we should bring some scouts out, put our money where our mouths are.
[0:32:48 – 0:32:50] Adam: Any scout troop out there need a leader?
[0:32:50 – 0:32:52] Adam: You better edit this part out.
[0:32:53 – 0:32:53] Adam: They don’t.
[0:32:53 – 0:32:56] Adam: We don’t want to let us lose with some scouts.
[0:32:56 – 0:33:00] Erik: If this is the first time you’re listening, just listen back over the course of the last 40 episodes.
[0:33:00 – 0:33:02] Adam: Those poor scouts.
[0:33:02 – 0:33:02] Erik: You will know.
[0:33:03 – 0:33:06] Erik: Neither of us are scout master worthy.
[0:33:06 – 0:33:07] Adam: We are definitely not.
[0:33:07 – 0:33:08] Erik: Not at this point.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:12] Adam: Not yet, but anyways, it’s good to get them out there.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:13] Adam: So thank you, Jerry.
[0:33:13 – 0:33:13] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:17] Erik: Thanks, Jerry, for the response and for taking out the youth.
[0:33:18 – 0:33:25] Erik: Rick, wife, daughter, and her friend did the Mudrow Horse River LBWF.
[0:33:26 – 0:33:26] Erik: What’s that?
[0:33:28 – 0:33:29] Erik: You think about that while I keep reading.
[0:33:30 – 0:33:32] Erik: Return through gun for town starting July 2.
[0:33:34 – 0:33:37] Erik: Might have been too much for a first trip, but we had a great trip.
[0:33:38 – 0:33:40] Erik: Two days before starting was a major storm.
[0:33:41 – 0:33:42] Erik: Great LBWF.
[0:33:43 – 0:33:45] Erik: Second camp below falls was magical.
[0:33:46 – 0:33:49] Erik: Last two days on ferry after worrying we wouldn’t get a sight.
[0:33:49 – 0:33:51] Erik: Gun was full late in the day.
[0:33:51 – 0:33:53] Erik: Had some major chop on crooked and four town.
[0:33:54 – 0:33:56] Erik: Too much gear and learned a lot from your podcast.
[0:33:57 – 0:33:58] Erik: Is it Basswood?
[0:33:59 – 0:34:01] Erik: Lower Basswood Falls?
[0:34:02 – 0:34:03] Adam: I believe that’s what we’re talking about.
[0:34:03 – 0:34:04] Adam: Yeah.
[0:34:04 – 0:34:05] Adam: More acronyms.
[0:34:05 – 0:34:07] Adam: The iconic LBWF.
[0:34:07 – 0:34:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:34:07 – 0:34:09] Erik: Last one here from Antonio.
[0:34:09 – 0:34:10] Adam: Antonio is in.
[0:34:11 – 0:34:13] Adam: End of May trip this year.
[0:34:14 – 0:34:18] Adam: Started on Kawishui and headed toward Makwak for some Lakers.
[0:34:18 – 0:34:20] Adam: Day one temps reached 95.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:25] Adam: And when we exited eight days later, the high was 42.
[0:34:25 – 0:34:25] Adam: Hmm.
[0:34:26 – 0:34:29] Adam: Our packs were heavy, and we were sweaty on that first day.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:33] Adam: By the eighth day, our packs were light, and we were wet from four days of rain towards the end.
[0:34:34 – 0:34:39] Adam: Moral of the story, you never truly stay dry in the BWCA.
[0:34:40 – 0:34:41] Adam: Yeah, I remember them 90s.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:43] Erik: Yeah, Mukwa.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:44] Adam: Oh, my gosh.
[0:34:44 – 0:34:45] Erik: Mukwa.
[0:34:45 – 0:34:46] Erik: Not Mukwalk.
[0:34:47 – 0:34:47] Adam: Mukwa.
[0:34:48 – 0:34:48] Adam: That’s what I said.
[0:34:48 – 0:34:49] Erik: Mukwa.
[0:34:49 – 0:34:50] Adam: Yeah, that’s what I said.
[0:34:50 – 0:34:50] Erik: You added a CK.
[0:34:52 – 0:34:53] Adam: Go back and check the tape.
[0:34:53 – 0:34:54] Adam: Fact check that.
[0:34:54 – 0:34:55] Adam: All right.
[0:34:55 – 0:34:56] Adam: Let’s do it right now.
[0:34:56 – 0:34:58] Adam: Fact check on the fly.
[0:34:58 – 0:34:59] Adam: Do, do, do, do, do.
[0:35:00 – 0:35:00] Adam: Yeah, all right.
[0:35:00 – 0:35:02] Adam: I said Mack-whack.
[0:35:03 – 0:35:04] Adam: Mack-whack.
[0:35:04 – 0:35:05] Adam: What is it?
[0:35:05 – 0:35:06] Adam: Mack-whack.
[0:35:06 – 0:35:06] Adam: Mack-whack.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:07] Erik: Mack-whack.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:10] Erik: It’s Anishinaabe for bear.
[0:35:12 – 0:35:13] Adam: Anin Mack-whack.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:17] Erik: So we’re going to move on.
[0:35:17 – 0:35:19] Adam: Yeah, and hello beer.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:21] Erik: And yes, hello beer.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:23] Erik: Moving on to Reddit before we get there.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:25] Erik: Let’s hello some beers.
[0:35:26 – 0:35:28] Adam: Yeah, well, it’s the season finale.
[0:35:28 – 0:35:32] Adam: So, you know, obviously we have to have two beer sponsors, not just one.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:35] Adam: It’s a special edition of Tumble Home.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:36] Adam: That’s what it’s going to take.
[0:35:36 – 0:35:44] Adam: And so this one comes to us from Ty and Kath in Indianapolis, California.
[0:35:45 – 0:35:48] Adam: Mom, Dad, can I call you that now?
[0:35:48 – 0:35:52] Adam: My no longer future in-laws, they’re my in-laws.
[0:35:52 – 0:35:54] Adam: You’re stuck with me now, Ty and Kath.
[0:35:55 – 0:35:55] Adam: Here you go.
[0:35:55 – 0:36:02] Adam: And they do tune into the show, and they’ve brought us some Sly Boogie Session IPAs.
[0:36:03 – 0:36:09] Adam: And it was a four-pack, and the day after the wedding, the four-pack fell out the side of the vibe, and two of them punctured.
[0:36:10 – 0:36:13] Adam: And Ty and I are very quick on our feet.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:14] Adam: We’re cat quick.
[0:36:14 – 0:36:20] Adam: And we quick each grabbed one and polished it off just to make sure no beer was wasted.
[0:36:20 – 0:36:26] Adam: But we salvaged the last two and stuck them in the fridge so they’re ready for this episode.
[0:36:27 – 0:36:33] Adam: So this is from Triton Brewing in Indianapolis.
[0:36:33 – 0:36:34] Adam: Is that right?
[0:36:34 – 0:36:34] Adam: That is right.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:35] Adam: Correct.
[0:36:36 – 0:36:36] Adam: So…
[0:36:37 – 0:36:44] Adam: Anyways, thank you for welcoming me into your family, and also thank you for these beers.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:44] Adam: They’re very nice.
[0:36:44 – 0:36:47] Adam: So let’s get into this.
[0:36:51 – 0:36:51] Adam: Damn it.
[0:36:52 – 0:36:53] Adam: Oh, my goodness.
[0:36:56 – 0:36:58] SPEAKER_00: Oh, they’re still shaking up.
[0:36:58 – 0:37:00] Adam: Wow, these things are just unruly.
[0:37:00 – 0:37:04] SPEAKER_00: It’s a beard-tastrophe.
[0:37:05 – 0:37:06] Adam: That was definitely a stereo.
[0:37:07 – 0:37:07] Adam: Was it?
[0:37:07 – 0:37:08] Adam: Yeah, that was good.
[0:37:09 – 0:37:09] Adam: Okay.
[0:37:09 – 0:37:10] SPEAKER_00: It was good and epic.
[0:37:11 – 0:37:12] SPEAKER_00: We were everywhere.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:13] Adam: Wow.
[0:37:16 – 0:37:17] Adam: All right.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:18] Adam: Well, that was pretty wild.
[0:37:19 – 0:37:26] Adam: So anyways, we’ve avoided any real catastrophe here, but thank you for the Sly Boogie IPA.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:27] Adam: What did you think of them?
[0:37:27 – 0:37:28] Adam: They’re pretty tasty.
[0:37:28 – 0:37:29] Erik: They are pretty tasty.
[0:37:29 – 0:37:32] Erik: They Sly Boogied a little too fast on that can.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:34] Adam: I got quite a bit of it in my mustache here.
[0:37:34 – 0:37:34] Adam: Yeah.
[0:37:35 – 0:37:36] Adam: But, yeah, very good.
[0:37:37 – 0:37:37] Adam: All right.
[0:37:37 – 0:37:46] Adam: Well, it is time to get into the final digital Reddit of the season.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:48] Adam: Do, do, do, do, do.
[0:37:49 – 0:37:51] Adam: Digital Reddit.
[0:37:54 – 0:37:56] Erik: I’m going to do a super cut of all of your songs.
[0:37:57 – 0:38:03] Erik: If we post anything in November, it’s just going to be a five-minute podcast of you singing.
[0:38:04 – 0:38:10] Adam: And it’s going to be… Total boogies in with nine points.
[0:38:11 – 0:38:12] Adam: That’s a hell of a lot of points.
[0:38:13 – 0:38:16] Adam: I did the Brule Cherokee loop in early June.
[0:38:17 – 0:38:19] Adam: We probably saw you on Cherokee.
[0:38:20 – 0:38:23] Adam: although I did it in the opposite direction you guys did.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:28] Adam: I learned two things, but both were a lot of reflection upon returning home.
[0:38:29 – 0:38:33] Adam: The first is that I need to up my game in terms of dropping unnecessary gear weight.
[0:38:34 – 0:38:38] Adam: Nothing groundbreaking stuff, but when you’re thinking about after your very first trip.
[0:38:39 – 0:38:40] Adam: Hammocks over tents.
[0:38:40 – 0:38:43] Adam: Meal prep and planning to lighten the food bag.
[0:38:43 – 0:38:45] Adam: Upgrading from entry-level gear.
[0:38:46 – 0:38:50] Adam: E. Coleman camp stove to lighter, smaller stuff.
[0:38:50 – 0:38:52] Adam: Air MSR pocket rocket.
[0:38:53 – 0:38:53] Erik: Wait, wait, wait.
[0:38:54 – 0:38:55] Erik: You’re adding in a bunch of letters here.
[0:38:56 – 0:38:56] Erik: E.G.
[0:38:57 – 0:38:58] Erik: Coleman stove and E.G.
[0:38:58 – 0:38:59] Erik: MSR pocket rocket.
[0:38:59 – 0:39:00] Adam: That’s how you pronounce E.G.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:01] Adam: is air.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:02] Erik: Is E.R.?
[0:39:02 – 0:39:03] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:39:03 – 0:39:05] Adam: I think it’s Latin.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:08] Adam: Do you want me to pronounce et cetera?
[0:39:08 – 0:39:10] Erik: No, ETC is fine.
[0:39:10 – 0:39:11] Erik: Okay.
[0:39:11 – 0:39:13] Erik: But ER Coleman stuff.
[0:39:14 – 0:39:16] Adam: I was kind of doing like days of your.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:17] Erik: Oh, the days of your.
[0:39:18 – 0:39:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:39:18 – 0:39:19] Adam: Days of ear.
[0:39:19 – 0:39:21] Adam: All right.
[0:39:22 – 0:39:22] Adam: Anyways.
[0:39:22 – 0:39:24] Adam: So yeah, I think we get the gist.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:25] Adam: Yeah.
[0:39:26 – 0:39:34] Adam: In conclusion, the vastly more important thing I learned after doing the trip in early summer was that an annual trip is simply not enough.
[0:39:35 – 0:39:37] Adam: I want to go multiple times next year.
[0:39:37 – 0:39:39] Adam: I want to go on solo trips.
[0:39:39 – 0:39:40] Adam: I want to bring a crew of first timers.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:43] Adam: And yeah, I still want to do my buddy trips.
[0:39:44 – 0:39:45] Adam: I want to try winter camping.
[0:39:46 – 0:39:47] Adam: I want to go really deep in the park.
[0:39:48 – 0:39:49] Adam: South arm of knife.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:49] Adam: Nice.
[0:39:50 – 0:39:50] Adam: Hey, hey.
[0:39:51 – 0:39:53] Adam: I learned that I’m addicted to the BWCA.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:54] Adam: Nice.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:58] Adam: That is the lesson that you really need to take away from all of this.
[0:39:58 – 0:39:59] Adam: Yes.
[0:39:59 – 0:39:59] Adam: Total bogey.
[0:39:59 – 0:40:01] Adam: I think that’s why you got nine points.
[0:40:02 – 0:40:03] Erik: Yeah, you really did sum it up there.
[0:40:03 – 0:40:04] Erik: I like all of that.
[0:40:04 – 0:40:07] Adam: I like the comment, welcome to the cult.
[0:40:08 – 0:40:09] Erik: Yeah, it is a cult.
[0:40:09 – 0:40:10] Adam: Yeah.
[0:40:10 – 0:40:10] Erik: Yeah.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:12] Erik: You’re one of us now.
[0:40:14 – 0:40:15] Erik: Thanks, Total Bogey.
[0:40:16 – 0:40:17] Erik: Or Boogie.
[0:40:17 – 0:40:18] Erik: I like Bogey.
[0:40:18 – 0:40:19] Erik: Total Bogey.
[0:40:20 – 0:40:23] Erik: But, yeah, South Arm of Knife.
[0:40:24 – 0:40:25] Erik: Love that place.
[0:40:25 – 0:40:26] Erik: Deep Park.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:27] Erik: That is Deep Park.
[0:40:28 – 0:40:39] Erik: And just the winter camping, that’s going to probably be one of the first few topics of conversation when we come back after our month-long hiatus is some winter camping chat.
[0:40:39 – 0:40:39] Erik: Yeah.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:42] Erik: And… Wall tents.
[0:40:42 – 0:40:43] Erik: Wall tents, layers.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:44] Erik: I know we had… Toboggans.
[0:40:45 – 0:40:50] Erik: We had somebody send us an email maybe like a month ago on like, you know, how to kind of dress for like late fall.
[0:40:51 – 0:40:56] Erik: Didn’t really get too much into it, but we’ll definitely be talking about that over the course of the long…
[0:40:57 – 0:40:59] Erik: Long, long winter.
[0:41:01 – 0:41:03] Adam: Thanks, Total Bogey.
[0:41:03 – 0:41:06] Erik: Glad you were one of the cult and addicted now.
[0:41:08 – 0:41:10] Erik: Ah, Jarlik.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:11] Erik: Jarlik.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:12] Erik: Jarlik.
[0:41:12 – 0:41:13] Erik: Jarlik.
[0:41:13 – 0:41:16] Erik: I think he’s, or she, again.
[0:41:16 – 0:41:17] Erik: Our good friend, Jarlik.
[0:41:17 – 0:41:18] Adam: Our good friend, Jarlik.
[0:41:20 – 0:41:23] Erik: Only managed to get one trip in this year as I had a baby on the way.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:27] Erik: Snowbank to Thomas and back in mid-May.
[0:41:28 – 0:41:32] Erik: Highlight was reading The Singing Wilderness in my hammock for hours.
[0:41:32 – 0:41:38] Erik: Without a care in the world, occasionally looking up at my fishing pole to see if I needed to reel in another laker.
[0:41:40 – 0:41:41] Erik: Gotta love that cigarette out in the park.
[0:41:42 – 0:41:43] Erik: Without a care in the world.
[0:41:44 – 0:41:45] Erik: Trying out my new CCS thwart bags.
[0:41:46 – 0:41:47] Erik: Waterfall on Gibson.
[0:41:47 – 0:41:49] Erik: Catching light trout from shore.
[0:41:49 – 0:41:50] Erik: That’s always fun.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:55] Erik: The sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I get from my trips into the BWCA.
[0:41:56 – 0:42:00] Erik: As an IT nerd office worker knowing that I have the skills with a Z.
[0:42:00 – 0:42:01] Erik: Skills.
[0:42:01 – 0:42:03] Erik: To survive and enjoy the wilderness.
[0:42:03 – 0:42:05] Adam: Wilderness skills.
[0:42:09 – 0:42:13] Erik: You got to make sure that those skills still stay relevant.
[0:42:13 – 0:42:20] Erik: Low lights, the weeks of anxiety leading up to our trip with the late ice out, watching webcams all day, hoping for a miracle.
[0:42:21 – 0:42:22] Erik: Yeah, I remember that this year.
[0:42:22 – 0:42:27] Erik: This spring was kind of like, I thought it was going to be a much later ice out, and then it just kind of.
[0:42:27 – 0:42:35] Adam: Yeah, I thought for a long time, I thought our Frost River trip was in real doubt due to the amount of ice, but we ended up getting black flies.
[0:42:35 – 0:42:36] Adam: So it was just fine.
[0:42:37 – 0:42:43] Erik: Ice went out a couple of days before our trip, losing six of the eight in our group because of the uncertainty of ice.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:44] Erik: What?
[0:42:44 – 0:42:46] Erik: You got to cut those people out of your life.
[0:42:46 – 0:42:48] Adam: Yeah, those people are real shabby.
[0:42:48 – 0:42:52] Erik: The wind on disappointment, the wind on Ima, the wind on Thomas.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:54] Erik: In short, the wind.
[0:42:54 – 0:42:54] Erik: That’s great.
[0:42:54 – 0:42:56] Erik: I love how you put that.
[0:42:56 – 0:42:58] Erik: Our wind out across Snowbank.
[0:42:58 – 0:43:01] Erik: Was the most shaken I’ve ever been in a canoe.
[0:43:01 – 0:43:01] Erik: Dang.
[0:43:02 – 0:43:14] Erik: Also showing pictures of my trip to my kids when I got home, only then realizing that my friend forgot to use the filter in our gravity system and instead just directly connected the dirty bag to the clean bag.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:20] Adam: Well, that kind of defeats the purpose of the gravity water filter system, but…
[0:43:21 – 0:43:22] Adam: You’re probably fine, right?
[0:43:23 – 0:43:23] Erik: Yeah.
[0:43:23 – 0:43:24] Adam: You’re on Snowbank.
[0:43:24 – 0:43:24] Erik: Seems all right.
[0:43:25 – 0:43:25] Erik: It’s clean.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:27] Erik: Lessons learned.
[0:43:27 – 0:43:30] Erik: The pool noodle trick to cover the metal gunnels is genius.
[0:43:31 – 0:43:35] Erik: Two, early May trips are not good for my anxiety level.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:37] Erik: Probably won’t schedule another this early.
[0:43:38 – 0:43:40] Erik: And three, new favorite adjectives.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:44] Erik: Portagee, campsitey, moosey.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:47] Erik: For example, that looks portagee to me over there.
[0:43:47 – 0:43:48] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:43:49 – 0:43:49] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:43:50 – 0:43:51] Adam: Yes.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:53] Adam: I love creative English.
[0:43:53 – 0:43:55] Adam: I’m a big fan of creative English.
[0:43:55 – 0:44:05] Erik: What was the picture, a drone photo that I showed you the other day and you said it was unapologetically Vento-esque?
[0:44:05 – 0:44:08] Adam: Yes, it was unapologetically Vento-esque.
[0:44:08 – 0:44:10] Erik: Nobody has ever said Vento-esque before.
[0:44:11 – 0:44:13] Erik: That’s the first time in the history of mankind.
[0:44:13 – 0:44:21] Adam: You know, when we first realized it was the Vento unit, we were kind of like, well, it was named for some politician, blah, blah, blah, whatever.
[0:44:22 – 0:44:25] Adam: It’s a fun word to say, and it really describes the area we’re in here.
[0:44:25 – 0:44:28] Adam: I’ve kind of embraced Vento at this point.
[0:44:28 – 0:44:32] Adam: And Vento-esque is the natural progression in the Vento language.
[0:44:32 – 0:44:33] Adam: So, yes.
[0:44:33 – 0:44:34] Erik: Bruce Vento.
[0:44:34 – 0:44:38] Adam: He kept snowmobiles out of the eastern portion of the mountain.
[0:44:38 – 0:44:39] Erik: He was pretty good.
[0:44:39 – 0:44:41] Adam: He was like the Jimmy Carter of Minnesota.
[0:44:41 – 0:44:44] Erik: It wasn’t one of those things where it was just like, yeah, whatever.
[0:44:44 – 0:44:45] Erik: We got to fill in a blank here.
[0:44:45 – 0:44:47] Erik: Let’s just name it the Vento unit.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:53] Erik: I don’t know why I went Boston there, but he actually did work.
[0:44:53 – 0:44:54] Adam: Say hi to your mom.
[0:44:54 – 0:44:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:55 – 0:44:56] Adam: Hey, say hi to your mom for me.
[0:44:56 – 0:44:58] Erik: Keep the snowmobiles out of this unit.
[0:44:58 – 0:45:02] Erik: I’m Vento.
[0:45:02 – 0:45:03] Adam: Crying out loud.
[0:45:04 – 0:45:18] Erik: One of my favorite things about this post on Reddit was not necessarily this last sentence, but the response was, thanks, Eric and Adam, for taking the time to do this podcast and giving me another outlet for my BWC obsession.
[0:45:18 – 0:45:21] Erik: One of the responses was, what podcast?
[0:45:21 – 0:45:21] Erik: Yeah.
[0:45:22 – 0:45:25] Adam: Yeah, what’s this post on Reddit all about?
[0:45:25 – 0:45:28] Adam: Just talking about the question.
[0:45:28 – 0:45:29] Erik: Question of the year.
[0:45:29 – 0:45:32] Erik: Somebody’s in here reading and not knowing that there’s a podcast.
[0:45:32 – 0:45:32] Erik: Sorry.
[0:45:32 – 0:45:33] Erik: That’s cool.
[0:45:33 – 0:45:34] Erik: I’m not trying to make fun of you.
[0:45:34 – 0:45:35] Erik: Welcome.
[0:45:35 – 0:45:36] Erik: Yeah, welcome.
[0:45:36 – 0:45:38] Erik: It made me funny.
[0:45:38 – 0:45:39] Adam: Welcome, Icarus.
[0:45:39 – 0:45:40] Erik: It made me laugh.
[0:45:40 – 0:45:42] Adam: You’re part of the cult now too, Icarus.
[0:45:42 – 0:45:43] Adam: You don’t even know.
[0:45:43 – 0:45:44] Erik: Whether you like it or not.
[0:45:45 – 0:45:47] Adam: And I like that I got three points.
[0:45:47 – 0:45:48] Adam: What podcast?
[0:45:48 – 0:45:49] Adam: Three points.
[0:45:49 – 0:45:50] Erik: Two other people wanted to know.
[0:45:50 – 0:45:51] Adam: I’m surprised he didn’t get gold.
[0:45:53 – 0:45:58] Adam: Rojo Riders, our next commenter with four points.
[0:45:59 – 0:46:06] Adam: My highlight was a day trip down the Moose Camp River, going from Moose Camp Lake to Four Town Lake with a group of six.
[0:46:07 – 0:46:16] Adam: It was a beautiful, sunny spring day in late May, so the river was high enough that we need not portage over most of the many beaver dams.
[0:46:16 – 0:46:25] Adam: We took our time and had a nice, quiet, meandering trip through a beautiful area where we could really see firsthand what the hard-working beaver can accomplish.
[0:46:26 – 0:46:28] Adam: Looking forward to next year already.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:34] Erik: Yeah, those hardworking beavers truly can accomplish a lot, especially on a river like that.
[0:46:34 – 0:46:40] Erik: There is a whole host of responses to this and definitely some good information for people heading down.
[0:46:40 – 0:46:41] Adam: Is this all beaver talk here?
[0:46:41 – 0:46:41] Adam: What’s going on?
[0:46:41 – 0:46:43] Erik: I think it’s mostly moose camp river chat.
[0:46:43 – 0:46:44] Erik: Oh, boy.
[0:46:44 – 0:46:45] Erik: There’s a, yeah.
[0:46:45 – 0:46:47] Erik: Moose camp river chatter.
[0:46:47 – 0:46:47] Erik: Moose camp.
[0:46:47 – 0:46:51] Adam: Yeah, those river folk are really a whole different kind of paddler.
[0:46:51 – 0:46:52] Adam: The river folk.
[0:46:54 – 0:46:55] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:46:55 – 0:46:57] Adam: Do I see a Laos River?
[0:46:57 – 0:46:58] Erik: I see Frost River.
[0:46:58 – 0:46:59] Erik: This is going to be good.
[0:46:59 – 0:47:00] Erik: This is interesting.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:00] Erik: Acts.
[0:47:01 – 0:47:02] Erik: No, no, sorry.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:04] Erik: Acts of kindness.
[0:47:04 – 0:47:09] Erik: A highlight of my summer trips happened at the end of the Laos River.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:21] Erik: The itinerary initially has us running the Laos and Frost Rivers before swinging back west via knife, but we shortened the trip once we got out there, which made it much more enjoyable.
[0:47:21 – 0:47:30] Erik: Coming from Lake 1 entry point, we explored the numbers chain before shooting over to Alice Lake, which was absolutely breathtaking.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:39] Erik: After Alice, we had an absolute haul of a day searching for portages and getting past beaver dams, working our way to Dent Lake.
[0:47:40 – 0:47:42] Erik: We were graced with a massive moose shed at our campsite.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:43] Erik: Wow.
[0:47:44 – 0:47:50] Erik: At this point in the trip, we hadn’t seen another group for two days, and it would be another day and a half before we would.
[0:47:51 – 0:48:00] Erik: And to top off the phenomenal isolation of the area, at the end of our next day, as the sun was setting and we were pulling into camp, a moose cow and her calf appeared.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:11] Erik: The calf popped out of the undergrowth in the bank of the lake, stood there, and then retreated back into the forest as the mother huffed at it from a distance.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:14] Erik: It’s a memory that will stay with me for a long time.
[0:48:14 – 0:48:15] Adam: Wow.
[0:48:16 – 0:48:17] Adam: I love the way that was written.
[0:48:17 – 0:48:19] Adam: Sounds like a heck of a trip.
[0:48:19 – 0:48:20] Adam: Jeez.
[0:48:20 – 0:48:23] Adam: As the mother huffed at it from a distance.
[0:48:23 – 0:48:24] Erik: Huffing mothers.
[0:48:25 – 0:48:25] Adam: Wow.
[0:48:26 – 0:48:27] Adam: That’s really nicely written.
[0:48:28 – 0:48:28] Adam: Beautiful trip.
[0:48:30 – 0:48:31] Adam: Well, how the heck?
[0:48:31 – 0:48:33] Adam: Now, that one had five points.
[0:48:33 – 0:48:34] Adam: Now, the next one has six points.
[0:48:34 – 0:48:36] Adam: I thought they were organized by points, no?
[0:48:37 – 0:48:39] Adam: Reddit is a mysterious thing.
[0:48:39 – 0:48:40] Erik: It is.
[0:48:40 – 0:48:44] Adam: Next up is Northbound Paddler with six points.
[0:48:44 – 0:48:46] Adam: I had three trips planned this year.
[0:48:47 – 0:48:51] Adam: Well, was going to do the first two back-to-back.
[0:48:51 – 0:48:53] Adam: The plan was four days on Lake Agnes.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:55] Adam: Agnes, shut up.
[0:48:55 – 0:48:55] Adam: Agnes.
[0:48:59 – 0:49:07] Adam: The plan was to do four days on Lake Agnes with my parents, come out to Ely, and head back in another week with my girlfriend up to Crooked.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:14] Adam: I slipped with a freshly sharpened Leatherman in my hand on Nina Moose Lake on day one of the first trip.
[0:49:14 – 0:49:17] Adam: Severe laceration to three of my fingers.
[0:49:17 – 0:49:20] Adam: Had to get canoed out by my parents to the ER.
[0:49:21 – 0:49:27] Adam: I considered myself a seasoned BWCA voyager and was guiding my parents for this trip.
[0:49:27 – 0:49:28] Adam: But some things never change.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:31] Adam: My mom still ended up having to take care of me.
[0:49:31 – 0:49:36] Adam: The trip I had planned immediately thereafter with a girlfriend was canceled due to my lack of functioning digits.
[0:49:37 – 0:49:40] Adam: Just got my bill a few weeks ago from the Ely Hospital.
[0:49:40 – 0:49:41] Adam: Ouch.
[0:49:41 – 0:49:43] Adam: Almost hurt more than the stitches.
[0:49:45 – 0:49:48] Adam: Anyways, the third trip I had planned worked out well.
[0:49:48 – 0:49:50] Adam: Back to the Agnes area to explore.
[0:49:50 – 0:49:54] Adam: I felt like I had to go back and conquer the region that had left me with a scar.
[0:49:55 – 0:49:59] Adam: The trip went well, but my trip partner and I now share a common bond.
[0:50:00 – 0:50:06] Adam: He hooked himself on the Nina Moose Lake through his thumb and treble hook with a treble hook.
[0:50:06 – 0:50:08] Adam: We are now Nina Moose blood brothers.
[0:50:09 – 0:50:09] Adam: It is known.
[0:50:10 – 0:50:10] Adam: It is known.
[0:50:10 – 0:50:11] Adam: It is known.
[0:50:11 – 0:50:12] Adam: That it is.
[0:50:12 – 0:50:12] Adam: Mm-hmm.
[0:50:14 – 0:50:14] Adam: Great year.
[0:50:14 – 0:50:19] Adam: The ultimate takeaway is know your first date.
[0:50:19 – 0:50:22] Adam: Already have four trips planned for next year.
[0:50:23 – 0:50:26] Adam: Side note, awesome show, guys.
[0:50:26 – 0:50:27] Adam: Yada, yada, yada.
[0:50:27 – 0:50:30] Adam: You’re too modest.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:31] Adam: Thank you.
[0:50:31 – 0:50:32] Adam: That’s nice of you to say that.
[0:50:32 – 0:50:34] Erik: Well, he or she?
[0:50:35 – 0:50:35] Adam: Our friend.
[0:50:35 – 0:50:37] Erik: Or was it very clear that he was a he?
[0:50:38 – 0:50:43] Erik: Either way, they did say that it will be a long winter until you get things rolling again.
[0:50:44 – 0:50:45] Erik: We are planning on doing some winter shows.
[0:50:45 – 0:50:47] Adam: Yeah, we’re not going to just leave y’all hanging.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:49] Adam: We can’t quit it either.
[0:50:49 – 0:50:53] Adam: We just need a little break, and then we’ll be doing shows all winter.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:54] Adam: Just not every week.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:55] Adam: Not every week.
[0:50:55 – 0:50:56] Adam: You know, it’s winter.
[0:50:56 – 0:50:57] Adam: Yeah, it’s winter.
[0:50:57 – 0:50:58] Adam: But thank you.
[0:50:58 – 0:50:59] Adam: It’s kind of you to say it.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:01] Erik: Very, very kind, Northbound Paddler.
[0:51:01 – 0:51:01] Erik: Thank you.
[0:51:01 – 0:51:02] Erik: Glad you enjoyed the show.
[0:51:03 – 0:51:05] Adam: I hope those digits recover.
[0:51:05 – 0:51:05] Adam: They will.
[0:51:05 – 0:51:07] Adam: You’re going to be just fine.
[0:51:07 – 0:51:08] Adam: You’ll be better for it, honestly.
[0:51:08 – 0:51:09] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:09 – 0:51:10] Adam: I got a blown knee.
[0:51:10 – 0:51:11] Adam: That thing’s stronger than the other one now.
[0:51:12 – 0:51:13] Adam: It’s got titanium bolts in it.
[0:51:13 – 0:51:15] Adam: I can portage like a crazy person on that right knee.
[0:51:16 – 0:51:17] Erik: Just on the right knee, though.
[0:51:19 – 0:51:21] Adam: Yeah, just like a regular person on the left knee now.
[0:51:22 – 0:51:25] Erik: Just a plain old normie over there on the left knee.
[0:51:26 – 0:51:26] Erik: Where are we at here?
[0:51:26 – 0:51:27] Erik: Smoke chaser.
[0:51:28 – 0:51:29] Erik: No trip for me this year.
[0:51:29 – 0:51:34] Erik: Just lots of dreaming about future trips with my daughter while rocking her to sleep this summer.
[0:51:36 – 0:51:38] Erik: She may have consumed… Natalie’s crying.
[0:51:38 – 0:51:40] Adam: Natalie literally just started crying over here.
[0:51:40 – 0:51:42] Erik: I think she’s pregnant now.
[0:51:42 – 0:51:43] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:51:43 – 0:51:45] Adam: Tori’s also crying.
[0:51:45 – 0:51:47] Adam: I’m sort of crying.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:58] Erik: She may have consumed a lot of my time by nature of being an infant, but what little free time I had, I spent reading the BWCA.com… Do I have to bleep that?
[0:51:58 – 0:51:59] Erik: I probably should bleep that.
[0:51:59 – 0:52:04] Erik: …message boards and carving a laminate paddle for her first trip in a year or two.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Erik: Oh, man.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:06] Erik: Oh, man.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:15] Adam: I can share that my nephew, Chester, when we took him out for a photo shoot paddle, he had a little, like, sprig of cedar that he was paddling with.
[0:52:15 – 0:52:16] Adam: He was really helping.
[0:52:17 – 0:52:18] Adam: It was adorable.
[0:52:18 – 0:52:24] Erik: I like this last couple of sentences, and the sentiment here is also very touching.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:28] Erik: Some seasons are for tripping, and some are just for planning and dreaming.
[0:52:29 – 0:52:30] Erik: This was one of those seasons.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:31] Erik: That was quite poetic.
[0:52:32 – 0:52:33] Erik: Very nice, Smoke Chaser.
[0:52:33 – 0:52:39] Erik: I am anxious to hear about your future trips and how the panel goes.
[0:52:41 – 0:52:46] Adam: We all here award you an extra point, so you’re all the way up to nine points now.
[0:52:46 – 0:52:47] Adam: You get to five points.
[0:52:47 – 0:52:48] Erik: Is there a sash involved?
[0:52:48 – 0:52:50] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:53] Erik: We send them a little sash to go along with the paddle.
[0:52:53 – 0:52:54] Adam: Future paddler sash.
[0:52:54 – 0:52:55] Erik: Yes.
[0:53:00 – 0:53:04] Adam: And, yeah, we’ll give you all of our Reddit gold, too, which I’m sorry is zero.
[0:53:04 – 0:53:05] Erik: We have accumulated nothing.
[0:53:05 – 0:53:07] Adam: Both ways won three points.
[0:53:08 – 0:53:11] Adam: I was a first-time BWCA visitor this year.
[0:53:12 – 0:53:24] Adam: Two friends and I did a loop in and out of Mudro, counterclockwise through, in order, Sandpit, Tin Can Mike, Camp Deer, Horse, Basswood River, Camp Near the Falls,
[0:53:24 – 0:53:28] Adam: More Basswood River to Crooked, camped on an island we dubbed Grundle.
[0:53:29 – 0:53:34] Adam: Down through Pampoose, Chippewa, Nicky, Wagoosh, Gunn, camped.
[0:53:35 – 0:53:37] Adam: Ferry, Boot, camped.
[0:53:38 – 0:53:40] Adam: And Fortown, where we camped for our final night.
[0:53:41 – 0:53:42] Adam: That’s a hell of a trip.
[0:53:42 – 0:53:45] Adam: That’s a nice paragraph there that you read excellently, I must say.
[0:53:45 – 0:53:49] Adam: So many memories from letting the canoe poorly at entry.
[0:53:49 – 0:53:57] Adam: So try to go in circles all the way across Mudro and not quite being prepared for the grueling nature of the portages or the number of them.
[0:53:57 – 0:54:02] Adam: to floating in our PFDs on our first evening in on Tin Can Mike.
[0:54:03 – 0:54:14] Adam: There was the shore lunch at Table Rock on Crooked Lake, and the sense of the vastness when we didn’t see another soul for a day and a half, even though we were paddling a fairly popular route.
[0:54:15 – 0:54:26] Adam: The walleyes were biting on gun and the sunnies on boot, and Otter ate our lunch on the stringer and proceeded to hang around our campsite, his home we were just visiting, for the day.
[0:54:27 – 0:54:30] Adam: The berries were ripe at our campsite on Fortown on our last morning.
[0:54:31 – 0:54:35] Adam: Loon called to us and took off heading south, leading us home.
[0:54:36 – 0:54:42] Adam: All in all, it was a life-affirming trip, and it strengthened the bonds of friendship between myself and my two friends.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:48] Adam: There are so many more stories, but they are always better when told in person.
[0:54:48 – 0:54:48] Erik: You’re here.
[0:54:49 – 0:54:49] Adam: Hey, hey.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:52] Adam: And that was really nice.
[0:54:53 – 0:54:55] Adam: That was very nicely written.
[0:54:55 – 0:54:56] Adam: Thank you for that.
[0:54:57 – 0:54:59] Erik: Yeah, I think you’ve gotten… Table Rock.
[0:54:59 – 0:55:00] Erik: Yes, Table Rock.
[0:55:01 – 0:55:03] Erik: We’ve got some good experiences out there.
[0:55:04 – 0:55:09] Erik: Also, question to the fact… You should probably do an EVP session out at Table Rock.
[0:55:09 – 0:55:10] Adam: That’s all I’m going to say.
[0:55:10 – 0:55:12] Erik: Whether or not that’s a Dolman or not…
[0:55:12 – 0:55:13] Adam: I think that is a Dolman.
[0:55:13 – 0:55:14] Erik: I vote against that.
[0:55:16 – 0:55:17] Adam: Just because it’s big and flat.
[0:55:17 – 0:55:18] Erik: It’s easier to move.
[0:55:18 – 0:55:20] Erik: You can lift up one corner at a time.
[0:55:20 – 0:55:22] Adam: It’s still very heavy.
[0:55:23 – 0:55:25] Erik: It is also a huge flat rock.
[0:55:25 – 0:55:26] Erik: That’s cool enough.
[0:55:27 – 0:55:27] Erik: Huzzah.
[0:55:28 – 0:55:28] Erik: Huzzah.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:31] Erik: Why don’t you read this next one?
[0:55:31 – 0:55:33] Erik: You’ve gotten like five long ones in a row.
[0:55:34 – 0:55:36] Adam: Next up is Blue Zephyre.
[0:55:37 – 0:55:38] Adam: Three points.
[0:55:39 – 0:55:42] Adam: Taking a newbie out and my first time to Johnson Falls.
[0:55:42 – 0:55:43] Adam: Hold on.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:44] Adam: Hold on.
[0:55:45 – 0:55:47] Erik: Here we go.
[0:55:47 – 0:55:48] Erik: I don’t know what’s happening.
[0:55:52 – 0:55:54] Adam: Johnson Falls.
[0:55:54 – 0:55:56] Adam: Got to go swimming in Johnson Falls.
[0:55:57 – 0:55:57] Erik: Wow.
[0:55:57 – 0:55:58] Erik: I was not expecting that.
[0:55:58 – 0:56:00] Adam: Love the podcast, guys.
[0:56:00 – 0:56:01] Adam: Yada, yada, yada.
[0:56:01 – 0:56:02] Adam: It’s pretty good.
[0:56:02 – 0:56:02] Adam: Nice comment.
[0:56:02 – 0:56:04] Adam: Thank you, Blue Zephyr.
[0:56:05 – 0:56:08] Adam: And thank you for swimming in Johnson Falls.
[0:56:09 – 0:56:10] Erik: Thank you for swimming in Johnson Falls.
[0:56:10 – 0:56:11] Adam: I hope you had a bag of wine.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:13] Erik: Blow underscore Zephyr.
[0:56:14 – 0:56:16] Adam: Is that how you say that?
[0:56:18 – 0:56:20] Adam: C’est l’art de la blues.
[0:56:23 – 0:56:31] Erik: I got back to the BWCA after my first trip 13 years ago.
[0:56:32 – 0:56:35] Erik: This year I did two trips through Moose Lake.
[0:56:35 – 0:56:40] Erik: One was nine days in June, staying on Knife Keck, Fraser, Ima, Ensign.
[0:56:40 – 0:56:47] Erik: And the other was planned to be eight days in September, but shortened to six due to weather on the South Ima Knife.
[0:56:48 – 0:56:49] Erik: Cherry.
[0:56:49 – 0:56:49] Erik: And knife.
[0:56:49 – 0:56:50] Erik: Oh, you don’t say.
[0:56:50 – 0:56:52] Erik: The weather in September kind of shortened the trip.
[0:56:53 – 0:56:53] Erik: Weird.
[0:56:53 – 0:56:56] Erik: I think you might be the only one that that happened to.
[0:56:56 – 0:56:58] Adam: Did you hit Lake of the Clouds on that one?
[0:56:58 – 0:56:59] Erik: Yeah.
[0:56:59 – 0:56:59] Erik: I thought you did.
[0:57:00 – 0:57:01] Erik: Hit us back, Yoken.
[0:57:01 – 0:57:03] Erik: Did you get lost up on Lake of the Clouds like you did?
[0:57:04 – 0:57:11] Erik: The June trip was fantastic despite lots of wind as we had good fishing and the water was so clear and cold.
[0:57:12 – 0:57:17] Erik: We had a lot of isolation on Keck and honestly had our gear and food situation pretty well planned.
[0:57:18 – 0:57:21] Erik: And we’ll do another long early June trip for sure.
[0:57:21 – 0:57:33] Erik: In September, we had an amazingly calm, amazing calm, clear nights on Cherry, but pushed ourselves hard on the first day to sack South Arm of Knife.
[0:57:33 – 0:57:35] Adam: Sack, sack, sack, sack, sack, sack.
[0:57:35 – 0:57:58] Erik: lessons learned go with people who will pull their weight and go fishing more highlights from june trip was catching first lake trout and just being out there highlight from september was definitely the beauty of cherry and paddling little knife and upper knife and seeing the burn on the canada side and catching the only fish of the trip a big 18 inch smallie while trolling
[0:57:59 – 0:58:02] Erik: I’m already planning a trip next year and can’t wait to get out there again.
[0:58:03 – 0:58:08] Erik: I have like 400 gigabytes of GoPro footage still unedited between both trips.
[0:58:08 – 0:58:12] Adam: Post that stuff on the YouTube, please, and send a link.
[0:58:12 – 0:58:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:58:13 – 0:58:19] Erik: And that’s the last comment, the last comment of the last episode of season one on rbwca.com.
[0:58:20 – 0:58:48] Adam: rbwca thanks good subreddit all year and and also the facebook people have been pretty good everybody’s been good no the instagram people have been pretty uh pretty shabby you need to pick it up over on instagram hey you get sorry to say it you give you get what you give maybe you need to work harder as a content provider on the platform i will take that into consideration and resolve myself to do better yeah it’s just the first season
[0:58:50 – 0:58:52] Adam: I don’t know about these hashtags.
[0:58:53 – 0:58:53] Adam: I’m still learning.
[0:58:54 – 0:58:56] Erik: What are these hashtags?
[0:58:57 – 0:59:02] Erik: So that’s it for the responses, the trips of the year.
[0:59:03 – 0:59:09] Erik: We really did come full circle asking what everybody was doing for the year and then how did those trips go.
[0:59:11 – 0:59:16] Erik: Let’s try to keep RBWCA alive throughout the course of the winter.
[0:59:17 – 0:59:19] Erik: It could use more, honestly.
[0:59:19 – 0:59:32] Erik: I’m not saying I had or we had anything to do with this, but it definitely seems like it’s a little bit more of a vibrant online community now with good content.
[0:59:32 – 0:59:33] Erik: Post more pictures on there.
[0:59:33 – 0:59:35] Erik: I want to see more of those dance party vids.
[0:59:35 – 0:59:38] Erik: Let’s see some of those 400 gigabytes of video.
[0:59:38 – 0:59:56] Erik: yeah absolutely you’re taking them yeah share them yeah I mean I don’t think there’s any nobody’s like taking advantage of the park at all by doing this it’s just expanding it’s part of the it’s part of the experience of being in the park is to bring these like memories home we all have this ability now to
[0:59:57 – 1:00:17] Adam: grab great photos and videos and maybe a little field audio yeah so it’s pretty neat um i’m really looking forward to the off season because i a lot of times avoid the reddit posts and the facebook posts that i can like read them for the first time on the show so it’s gonna be nice being in the off season i can maybe participate a little bit more
[1:00:18 – 1:00:20] Adam: Maybe have a little more time to do it as well.
[1:00:20 – 1:00:21] Adam: So that’s going to be nice too.
[1:00:21 – 1:00:29] Erik: Definitely something that we, I think, get a little bit more of that first true response by just reading it for the first time.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:31] Adam: I think there’s something to it for sure.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:34] Erik: Yeah.
[1:00:35 – 1:00:44] Erik: So that is the responses from our fine, fine listeners out there in, I don’t know, what do they call it these days?
[1:00:45 – 1:00:45] Erik: Cyberspace?
[1:00:46 – 1:00:47] Adam: Yes.
[1:00:47 – 1:00:49] Adam: Yeah, that’s absolutely it.
[1:00:49 – 1:00:50] Adam: The cyberspace.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:53] Erik: Do you have an answer to that question?
[1:00:53 – 1:00:54] Adam: I do.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:54] Adam: Yeah?
[1:00:55 – 1:00:58] Adam: I have a three-pronged approach to this answer.
[1:00:58 – 1:00:59] Erik: A trident, if you will.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:00] Adam: Yeah.
[1:01:00 – 1:01:07] Adam: So the trip of the year for me was Natalie and I got to do the Frost River.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:15] Adam: It’s been on our list of routes to take for three years now since we met, really.
[1:01:15 – 1:01:20] Adam: We’ve been trying to do this trip, and it just never worked out with our work schedules or…
[1:01:20 – 1:01:24] Adam: You need to block off a good amount of time to make this trip happen.
[1:01:24 – 1:01:24] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:25 – 1:01:28] Adam: And it’s got to hopefully happen early in the season.
[1:01:29 – 1:01:35] Adam: Earlier in the episode, I mentioned how I remember the 95-degree heat around Memorial Day because that’s when we were out there.
[1:01:35 – 1:01:36] Adam: That’s when he got zapped.
[1:01:36 – 1:01:41] Adam: And we don’t need to go into too much detail on this because you can go back to episode 22 and listen to the whole thing.
[1:01:43 – 1:01:46] Adam: We’ll have to edit that out and replace it with the correct episode title.
[1:01:46 – 1:01:47] Erik: 19.
[1:01:47 – 1:01:50] Adam: Anyways, it was an amazing trip.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:51] Adam: It was a lot of work.
[1:01:51 – 1:01:54] Adam: It was definitely the longest mileage trip we were able to do this year.
[1:01:56 – 1:02:23] Adam: and uh there’s a pretty special thing you know getting a camp on baloney obviously so obviously that was the uh that was the trip of the year and uh yeah i really enjoy i highly recommend that route to anybody that has the time to make that happen uh the the gear of the year is helinox camp chairs hit us up helinox boom uh
[1:02:24 – 1:02:29] Adam: We love your product on the show here, so we’re just going to leave it at that.
[1:02:29 – 1:02:35] Adam: They’re not paying us to say that either, so anybody listening to this can tell that these are legit pieces of gear.
[1:02:35 – 1:02:37] Adam: These chairs are amazing.
[1:02:37 – 1:02:40] Adam: I used to have a Crazy Creek that I got from a garage sale.
[1:02:40 – 1:02:42] Erik: You mean two flaps of foam connected by duct tape?
[1:02:42 – 1:02:45] Adam: It was two flaps of foam being held together by some duct tape.
[1:02:45 – 1:02:49] Adam: That’s what I used to use as a camp chair for literally six or seven seasons.
[1:02:49 – 1:02:50] Adam: It was a terrible camp chair.
[1:02:51 – 1:03:17] Adam: now the one good thing about that is you could kind of put it in the back of your Duluth pack and it would kind of stabilize the pack a little maybe act as a little extra padding on your back but it still wasn’t worth it things sucked as a camp chair so Natalie bought me this beautiful Helinox 1XL thing is a thing is a beast it’s literally bigger than the chair I’m sitting in in my own living room right now yeah it makes the chair that weighs four ounces
[1:03:17 – 1:03:22] Erik: It makes the ones that, the one that I have and the ones that we send out in outfitting look like miniature.
[1:03:23 – 1:03:24] Erik: And I should say.
[1:03:25 – 1:03:25] Erik: Right.
[1:03:26 – 1:03:33] Erik: As an outfitter, I have had 20 or so of those chairs over the last three summers.
[1:03:33 – 1:03:36] Erik: I still have the same amount.
[1:03:37 – 1:03:38] Erik: I haven’t had any break.
[1:03:39 – 1:03:43] Erik: The only thing that’s happened is the spark that jumps into the seat.
[1:03:43 – 1:03:44] Adam: So you get a little burn hole.
[1:03:44 – 1:03:46] Adam: So it’s just extra ventilation.
[1:03:46 – 1:03:47] Adam: Ventilation.
[1:03:48 – 1:04:11] Adam: yeah keeps that uh paint dry i’ve only gotten to take it on like two trips so far i mean it’s brand new so but obviously hands down the newest and best piece of gear i’ve gotten durable super super uh chair really comfy super super super super it’s a special special chair this is the best chair you’ll ever find
[1:04:11 – 1:04:19] Adam: Got to sit on it on the uneven campsite at Din Din in the PMA, and it really soothed my back.
[1:04:20 – 1:04:22] Erik: If you can find a chair that soothes your back on Din Din…
[1:04:23 – 1:04:23] Adam: Yes.
[1:04:24 – 1:04:25] Adam: You found a real thing.
[1:04:25 – 1:04:26] Adam: You found a chair for life.
[1:04:26 – 1:04:27] Adam: Oh, boy.
[1:04:28 – 1:04:37] Adam: And that kind of leads me into the idea of the year, which was a high contender for trip of the year was our PMA trip into Din Din.
[1:04:38 – 1:04:45] Adam: And just the idea of looking at a map differently and seeing those primitive management areas out there.
[1:04:45 – 1:04:46] Adam: There’s 12 of them.
[1:04:47 – 1:05:13] Adam: i believe and they are close to wherever you like to go in the boundary waters i know we are very vento-esque but there is a lot of pmas on the west side this is ely the ely side’s got us beat big time on pma advantage because there’s a ton of them over there i was just looking over at lakla kroy and there’s like three of them right around there and they actually have some portages kind of marked out on the big map you got me for outfitting so yeah
[1:05:14 – 1:05:29] Adam: That’s the thing that really tilted my mind the most as far as Boundary Waters theory and canoe camping theory is these PMAs because it’s a whole new thing going into those.
[1:05:30 – 1:05:40] Adam: And I think you’re going to maybe talk a little bit more about the trip itself, but just the idea of these PMAs being out there, something that I had really not even considered before this year.
[1:05:40 – 1:05:40] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:41 – 1:05:48] Adam: That was really the new thing as far as how we’re going to attack the park and kind of see new things going forward.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:51] Adam: I think it’s going to be a big part of our future plans.
[1:05:51 – 1:05:51] Erik: Yeah.
[1:05:51 – 1:05:55] Erik: No, I’m not necessarily going to talk much about the trip.
[1:05:55 – 1:05:57] Adam: We already had a whole episode about it.
[1:05:57 – 1:06:03] Erik: But like you said, it definitely does change the way that you look at a map in terms of what you can put together for a route.
[1:06:04 – 1:06:10] Erik: Or, you know, one of the things that we came away from that was like, was that like mid-August?
[1:06:11 – 1:06:11] Adam: Right.
[1:06:11 – 1:06:12] Adam: It was mid-August.
[1:06:12 – 1:06:16] Erik: We weren’t worried about trying to find a campsite.
[1:06:17 – 1:06:23] Erik: And one of the things that’s the most exciting about that is going back out to either that spot or maybe a new one.
[1:06:23 – 1:06:28] Erik: Because what took us the longest was navigating those portages.
[1:06:29 – 1:06:31] Erik: And then on the way out, we knew right where they were.
[1:06:32 – 1:06:32] Erik: Right.
[1:06:32 – 1:06:35] Adam: It took us four hours to get in, but like an hour to get out.
[1:06:35 – 1:06:39] Erik: Yeah, and if you can get like a PMA just like locked down in terms of travel.
[1:06:39 – 1:06:42] Adam: Yeah, find the PMA that’s close to where you like to go.
[1:06:43 – 1:06:44] Adam: Learn it a little bit more.
[1:06:44 – 1:06:47] Erik: Learn it, add those portages to the map.
[1:06:48 – 1:06:52] Erik: Click on the privacy policy for that map.
[1:06:52 – 1:07:01] Erik: And so the concept of basically the way that the permitting system works to allow yourself to have guaranteed access to these lakes without anybody else.
[1:07:03 – 1:07:14] Erik: that’s for me, I think from the, the summer that was like, Oh, well now these July and August paddling excursions seem a little bit more attainable where I’m not worried.
[1:07:14 – 1:07:31] Erik: Like you can like guarantee you’ve got your own little section of the park with those PMAs and the, you know, every year getting to a point where something else needs to excite you to kind of keep going to a certain extent and,
[1:07:33 – 1:07:35] Erik: continuing to explore and map
[1:07:36 – 1:08:05] Erik: local pmas is i think what i’m most excited about and what was probably the most notable thing from this year although i’m sure as soon as i’m done talking something else will come to mind that’s just the way that that works but yeah i mean we’re always just spending eight months of winter standing around looking at maps really yeah basically then you get a couple months of open water and you can try and explore as much of that map as you can and until the next season so
[1:08:06 – 1:08:08] Erik: Yeah, as it allows, it’s just crazy.
[1:08:08 – 1:08:17] Erik: We had all these big plans for this fall to go out and paddle and camp, and every time I turned around, there was ice, skim ice on a local lake.
[1:08:17 – 1:08:23] Adam: Maybe what we need to do is mount a blowtorch on the front of a Min-2, and you can always paddle.
[1:08:24 – 1:08:33] Erik: Yeah, we were paddling through skim ice today, and it was the thinnest ice, and even that was kind of dangerous today.
[1:08:33 – 1:08:34] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:34 – 1:08:35] Adam: No, that’s not good.
[1:08:35 – 1:08:38] Erik: Turning was dicey.
[1:08:39 – 1:08:44] Erik: As soon as you get into that ice, it just feels wrong.
[1:08:44 – 1:08:45] Erik: It doesn’t feel safe.
[1:08:46 – 1:08:58] Erik: And so, you know, I think we’ve talked about this in the past, but the last big month in Quetico, me and Tori were coming across those hated Bud, Bisc, and Bell lakes.
[1:08:59 – 1:09:02] Erik: And those were like, that was like maybe a half inch of ice.
[1:09:02 – 1:09:03] Erik: Bisque is a real piece of shit lake.
[1:09:06 – 1:09:11] Erik: And we had to load everything into the back of the canoe to try to like, I mean.
[1:09:11 – 1:09:12] Erik: Yeah.
[1:09:12 – 1:09:14] Erik: Those Kevlar canoes, they.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:15] Erik: They’re not meant for ice breaking.
[1:09:15 – 1:09:16] Erik: They’re definitely not.
[1:09:16 – 1:09:19] Erik: Any kind of skim, just the tiniest bit of ice.
[1:09:19 – 1:09:20] Adam: Really shuts the season down.
[1:09:20 – 1:09:21] Adam: Yeah.
[1:09:21 – 1:09:22] Adam: Not a whole lot you can do there.
[1:09:23 – 1:09:25] Adam: You guys could take a Grumman all the way to Ely.
[1:09:26 – 1:09:27] Adam: Get an ice cream cone at Dairy Queen.
[1:09:27 – 1:09:31] Erik: Take a Grumman trip.
[1:09:32 – 1:09:32] Erik: Yeah.
[1:09:33 – 1:09:41] Erik: There’s been years in the past where… Take a Grumman and a shotgun and a blowtorch, and you’re going to get to that Dairy Queen.
[1:09:42 – 1:09:46] Erik: See how late you can paddle into the year with just shotgunning ice.
[1:09:46 – 1:09:48] Adam: Might want to bring an auger and some tip-ups.
[1:09:49 – 1:09:52] Erik: Yeah, and just a big ice saw in general.
[1:09:54 – 1:09:56] Erik: So, yeah, I don’t know.
[1:09:56 – 1:10:04] Erik: I think, yeah, the PMA, the Brule trip was, that was a good trip.
[1:10:04 – 1:10:05] Adam: The Brule trip was fun, yeah.
[1:10:05 – 1:10:06] Erik: It was different, but.
[1:10:06 – 1:10:10] Adam: It was the first trip with the pup, so that was always special too, you know, getting the pup out.
[1:10:10 – 1:10:10] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:10 – 1:10:12] Adam: Having her eat some frogs on a portage.
[1:10:12 – 1:10:13] Adam: Yes.
[1:10:13 – 1:10:16] Adam: Getting up to see the old Vesper, the Vesperian Hills.
[1:10:17 – 1:10:17] Adam: That was special.
[1:10:18 – 1:10:22] Adam: Big storms, the crazy storms we had to travel through.
[1:10:22 – 1:10:23] Adam: That was fun.
[1:10:23 – 1:10:23] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:24 – 1:10:28] Erik: So, I don’t know, 40 episodes, man.
[1:10:28 – 1:10:29] Erik: Yeah.
[1:10:29 – 1:10:33] Erik: There’s a lot of our lives and experiences down in the…
[1:10:34 – 1:10:37] Adam: I’m sure these are going in the Library of Congress someday.
[1:10:37 – 1:10:37] Adam: Probably.
[1:10:38 – 1:10:39] Adam: They probably already are.
[1:10:39 – 1:10:40] Adam: Yeah, they’re in the ether.
[1:10:40 – 1:10:43] Adam: They’re in the Library of Google, at least, so…
[1:10:43 – 1:10:43] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:44 – 1:10:46] Adam: Somebody will be able to find them at some point.
[1:10:46 – 1:10:48] Adam: But, yeah, I mean, that’s pretty cool, too.
[1:10:48 – 1:10:52] Adam: Just, wow, one day you’re like, let’s start a podcast about the Boundary Waters.
[1:10:52 – 1:10:54] Adam: And now we’re 40 episodes in.
[1:10:54 – 1:10:54] Adam: Yeah.
[1:10:55 – 1:10:57] Adam: And, yeah, it’s been a lot of fun.
[1:10:57 – 1:10:58] Erik: Sick of doing it.
[1:10:58 – 1:10:58] Erik: Hate it.
[1:10:58 – 1:11:00] Erik: Pretty much hate the Boundary Waters now.
[1:11:01 – 1:11:02] Erik: That’s what I take away from this podcast.
[1:11:02 – 1:11:03] Adam: Ruined it.
[1:11:03 – 1:11:04] Adam: It ruined it for me.
[1:11:04 – 1:11:06] Erik: Sucked the soul out of my, no.
[1:11:07 – 1:11:08] Erik: No, it was good.
[1:11:08 – 1:11:08] Erik: It was fun.
[1:11:08 – 1:11:11] Erik: I think every, like, I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun.
[1:11:11 – 1:11:13] Erik: And it’s not, it doesn’t seem like work.
[1:11:13 – 1:11:14] Erik: I really hope.
[1:11:14 – 1:11:18] Erik: Talking about our trips and talking with other people about the trips that they’ve taken.
[1:11:19 – 1:11:22] Erik: And yeah, I still love doing it.
[1:11:22 – 1:11:24] Erik: I really have liked doing it from day one.
[1:11:25 – 1:11:29] Adam: I hope and believe that people can sense how much fun we’re having doing these.
[1:11:30 – 1:11:36] Adam: It might be the random party horns or the… Sweet songs.
[1:11:36 – 1:11:37] Adam: We could do a whole clip show of just laughter.
[1:11:38 – 1:11:39] Adam: Yes, just laugh.
[1:11:39 – 1:11:41] Erik: An hour of clips of us laughing.
[1:11:42 – 1:11:43] Adam: Anyways.
[1:11:45 – 1:11:45] Adam: That was laughter.
[1:11:46 – 1:11:47] Adam: That was laughter.
[1:11:48 – 1:11:49] Adam: Genuine laughter.
[1:11:49 – 1:11:49] Erik: Genuine laughter.
[1:11:49 – 1:11:51] Erik: You would know nothing about it.
[1:11:52 – 1:11:53] Adam: Cheers.
[1:11:53 – 1:11:54] Adam: Cheers to you.
[1:11:54 – 1:11:56] Adam: The first season’s been a lot of fun.
[1:11:56 – 1:11:57] Adam: So cheers to you, Eric.
[1:11:58 – 1:11:59] Adam: Cheers.
[1:11:59 – 1:12:01] Adam: And also cheers to…
[1:12:03 – 1:12:03] Adam: Yes.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:07] Erik: Cheers to the geologist and…
[1:12:07 – 1:12:08] Erik: Zoo archaeologist wives.
[1:12:09 – 1:12:09] Erik: Yes!
[1:12:10 – 1:12:11] Erik: They will be on.
[1:12:11 – 1:12:11] Erik: Woo!
[1:12:13 – 1:12:15] Erik: It’s eight months of winter coming at us.
[1:12:15 – 1:12:21] Adam: Cheers to all our special guests, especially Brother Andrew for all his contributions to the show.
[1:12:21 – 1:12:22] Erik: Cheers to Brother Andrew.
[1:12:22 – 1:12:23] Erik: Who else has been on?
[1:12:23 – 1:12:24] Erik: Cheers to Josh.
[1:12:24 – 1:12:25] Erik: Joshipoo.
[1:12:25 – 1:12:27] Adam: Joshipoo is on a few episodes.
[1:12:27 – 1:12:28] Erik: He has been on a few times.
[1:12:29 – 1:12:34] Adam: And cheers to everybody, especially to everybody on digital Facebook and digital Reddit.
[1:12:35 – 1:12:42] Adam: And most importantly to the people, the five people who left us a voicemail on the Tumble Home answering machine.
[1:12:43 – 1:12:52] Erik: Importantly, but most importantly, I think, are the fine, fine folks who have spent their own hard-earned cash to send us beer sponsorships.
[1:12:52 – 1:12:53] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:12:53 – 1:12:53] Adam: We saved this.
[1:12:53 – 1:12:57] Adam: The best for last is the people who sent us beer or dropped it off.
[1:12:58 – 1:12:58] Adam: Or mailed it.
[1:12:58 – 1:12:59] Adam: Or mailed it.
[1:12:59 – 1:13:00] Adam: Yeah.
[1:13:00 – 1:13:02] Erik: Or mysteriously made it appear somehow.
[1:13:03 – 1:13:04] Adam: Yeah, through dark black magic.
[1:13:07 – 1:13:13] Adam: Obviously, you are the all-stars, and the people who really keep us going is our beer sponsors.
[1:13:14 – 1:13:21] Adam: So, in closing, make sure you keep sending that beer up here.
[1:13:24 – 1:13:25] Erik: The most important…
[1:13:27 – 1:13:31] Erik: But in closing, the most important people are the listeners.
[1:13:31 – 1:13:32] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:13:32 – 1:13:33] Adam: The whole reason we’re doing this.
[1:13:33 – 1:13:39] Adam: And there are many of you, a shockingly large amount of people listening to this podcast.
[1:13:39 – 1:13:40] Adam: Yes.
[1:13:41 – 1:13:43] Erik: And don’t feel obligated to send in beers, honestly.
[1:13:43 – 1:13:44] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:13:44 – 1:13:44] Adam: Yeah.
[1:13:44 – 1:13:45] Adam: We’re joking, obviously.
[1:13:46 – 1:13:47] Adam: about the beers.
[1:13:47 – 1:13:49] Adam: But seriously, if you’re up here, bring us some beers.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:53] Erik: Now, if you happen to be heading on up from Wisconsin, uh, yeah, the new Glarus.
[1:13:53 – 1:13:57] Adam: We’re trying to stay independent, but through your help, we’re going to, we’re going to keep doing that.
[1:13:57 – 1:13:58] Adam: And, uh,
[1:14:00 – 1:14:05] Adam: Yeah, it’s been a really great experience.
[1:14:05 – 1:14:06] Erik: It’s been a lot of fun.
[1:14:07 – 1:14:21] Erik: And over the course of the next month, if you feel so inclined, you can still send us an email at tumblehomecasts at gmail.com, Facebook, tumblehomecasts on Facebook, tumblehomecasts on Instagram.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:22] Adam: On the gram.
[1:14:22 – 1:14:23] Adam: We’re definitely on the gram.
[1:14:23 – 1:14:26] Erik: There is a number that you can call.
[1:14:26 – 1:14:27] Erik: It’s in the show notes.
[1:14:27 – 1:14:28] Adam: It’s in the show notes.
[1:14:28 – 1:14:32] Erik: Maybe you just want to let us know, hey, you went through a whole season.
[1:14:32 – 1:14:34] Erik: You didn’t talk about this.
[1:14:34 – 1:14:35] Erik: Is there a topic?
[1:14:35 – 1:14:36] Erik: Is there a thing?
[1:14:36 – 1:14:37] Erik: Especially maybe now we’re heading into the winter season.
[1:14:42 – 1:14:46] Erik: Lots to do in the Bajau water still, even after the lakes freeze.
[1:14:46 – 1:14:47] Erik: We’ve got a wall tent.
[1:14:48 – 1:14:51] Erik: We’ve got ways to get out and still explore the park.
[1:14:51 – 1:14:52] Erik: Do you?
[1:14:52 – 1:14:53] Erik: Do you have any questions about those?
[1:14:54 – 1:14:56] Adam: Winter is eight months of the year up here.
[1:14:57 – 1:14:58] Erik: Yeah, we really should.
[1:14:58 – 1:15:00] Erik: Our main season should be the winter season.
[1:15:00 – 1:15:00] Adam: Right.
[1:15:00 – 1:15:02] Erik: Not the summer paddling season.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:04] Adam: It is goofy how we focus on the open water.
[1:15:05 – 1:15:09] Adam: It’s like the best season to be up here, but really it’s only a very small sliver of the season.
[1:15:09 – 1:15:11] Erik: Yep.
[1:15:11 – 1:15:15] Erik: Or is there things just completely off the radar that we haven’t done?
[1:15:15 – 1:15:20] Erik: Maybe you want to hear us talk to somebody else besides our wives.
[1:15:20 – 1:15:21] Erik: Yes.
[1:15:21 – 1:15:22] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:15:22 – 1:15:24] Erik: Adam’s already skeptical.
[1:15:24 – 1:15:25] Erik: I don’t like other people.
[1:15:25 – 1:15:28] Erik: I think it would be maybe fun to talk to some people.
[1:15:28 – 1:15:29] Erik: Talk to the folks someplace.
[1:15:30 – 1:15:33] Erik: Ask them like, you know, hey, you’re more familiar with this lake than we are.
[1:15:34 – 1:15:34] Erik: Sure.
[1:15:34 – 1:15:35] Erik: How did it get its name?
[1:15:35 – 1:15:36] Erik: What’s the fishing like?
[1:15:37 – 1:15:37] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:15:37 – 1:15:38] Erik: Maybe I’m wrong.
[1:15:38 – 1:15:40] Adam: No, you’re not.
[1:15:40 – 1:15:41] Adam: You’re totally correct.
