Episode Transcript
[0:00:00 – 0:00:00] UNKNOWN: Oh!
[0:00:39 – 0:00:43] Adam: Welcome to the Tumble Home Boundary Waters Podcast.
[0:00:44 – 0:00:47] Adam: My name is Adam, and with me, as always, is my good friend Eric.
[0:00:48 – 0:00:49] Adam: Hello!
[0:00:50 – 0:00:55] Adam: We’re coming to you live in the field from Little Sag.
[0:00:57 – 0:01:01] Adam: And today’s episode is What’s in Your Bag?
[0:01:02 – 0:01:02] Adam: on Little Sag.
[0:01:03 – 0:01:05] Erik: In the field, what’s in your bag?
[0:01:05 – 0:01:05] Erik: I mean…
[0:01:07 – 0:01:17] Erik: We were thinking about maybe doing it just in the house, in outfitting, but what a better, I can’t think of a better place to do it than actually out in the field.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:18] Erik: This is what we packed.
[0:01:18 – 0:01:27] Erik: We’re going to go through it from top to bottom as detailed as we can possibly be because it sounds like that might be what people want.
[0:01:27 – 0:01:30] Erik: I’m trying to manage a video at the same time here.
[0:01:30 – 0:01:34] Erik: So again, at the very least, we’re going to have solid audio.
[0:01:36 – 0:01:40] Erik: So let’s just give a quick little, you know, where we are, how we got here.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:41] Erik: Not too much because…
[0:01:41 – 0:01:42] Adam: This is Mui Authentico.
[0:01:42 – 0:01:46] Adam: Like, we did just get up early and paddle right to this campsite.
[0:01:46 – 0:01:49] Adam: And we went by it and saw the ledge here.
[0:01:50 – 0:01:52] Adam: And it’s a beautiful overlook.
[0:01:52 – 0:01:56] Adam: We should have wind blowing in here, but not going to get, like, wind locked in here.
[0:01:57 – 0:01:58] Adam: So it just spoke to us.
[0:01:58 – 0:02:00] Adam: We kind of had a region of little sag we were looking at.
[0:02:00 – 0:02:02] Adam: And this was the first one we came by, and it was…
[0:02:04 – 0:02:05] Adam: Mmm, tre-tasty ammo.
[0:02:05 – 0:02:11] Erik: Yeah, well, there’s a campsite review out there of it somewhere, but it’s not on this episode.
[0:02:11 – 0:02:17] Adam: No, no, we will have that later for you, but we’re going to get into our pack, and so we’ve literally just paddled here.
[0:02:18 – 0:02:19] Adam: My feet are still wet.
[0:02:21 – 0:02:31] Adam: We’ve just had a few sips of wine, and I guess we’ll go ahead and say that Tumble Home Boundary Waters podcast is, of course, sponsored by Clearwater Historic Lodge and Outfitters.
[0:02:32 – 0:02:40] Adam: And this week, by refreshing white wine from our good friends at Franzia Vinre.
[0:02:41 – 0:02:43] Adam: Is it Franzia or it’s not Peter Vela?
[0:02:43 – 0:02:44] Adam: No, I’m not.
[0:02:44 – 0:02:45] Adam: We upgraded.
[0:02:45 – 0:02:46] Adam: We went with Franzia this week.
[0:02:47 – 0:02:48] Adam: Refreshing white.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:52] Adam: I bought it at the Muni and I said, I slapped her on the counter.
[0:02:52 – 0:02:55] Adam: I said, I’m buying this refreshing white wine.
[0:02:55 – 0:02:56] Adam: It’s officially summer.
[0:02:57 – 0:02:57] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:58 – 0:02:58] Adam: Very nice.
[0:02:58 – 0:03:00] Adam: I’m sure you scared the poor women.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:03] Adam: They were enthusiastic and frightened by that statement.
[0:03:04 – 0:03:05] Adam: So we’ve just arrived.
[0:03:05 – 0:03:08] Adam: I think we’re going to start by just going over what we’re currently wearing.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:12] Adam: What have we chosen to outfit our bodies with first?
[0:03:12 – 0:03:16] Adam: That’s like a pre-packed pack, our body packs.
[0:03:16 – 0:03:17] Erik: This is the pack.
[0:03:17 – 0:03:19] Erik: We haven’t even opened it yet.
[0:03:19 – 0:03:21] Adam: No, it’s still wide open.
[0:03:22 – 0:03:25] Adam: We did pull the bag of wine out of there when we got to Little Sag.
[0:03:25 – 0:03:27] Adam: The bag of wine was on top of that.
[0:03:28 – 0:03:31] Erik: What kind of pack is that?
[0:03:31 – 0:03:36] Erik: The pack, that is a granite gear number four, all black, super sexy.
[0:03:37 – 0:03:41] Erik: That’s your largest pack I think you can legally buy in the States at least.
[0:03:41 – 0:03:44] Adam: Yeah, at least on the regular market.
[0:03:45 – 0:03:51] Adam: But we don’t even have that thing maxed out, but I can tell you from the last seven portages, it’s pretty heavy.
[0:03:51 – 0:03:53] Adam: I don’t know that it’s as heavy as the food barrel.
[0:03:54 – 0:03:56] Adam: This maniac is doing the food barrel and the canoe.
[0:03:58 – 0:04:01] Adam: Soloed it through the Tuscarora portage to get out here.
[0:04:02 – 0:04:03] Adam: I don’t know if you can hear that.
[0:04:03 – 0:04:04] Adam: The wind is kind of picking up.
[0:04:05 – 0:04:11] Erik: Yes, which I think was the main reason we got the 4 a.m. sunrise start was for this wind.
[0:04:12 – 0:04:15] Erik: We’ll keep at it out here on this.
[0:04:15 – 0:04:18] Erik: This is like a promontory.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:18] Erik: Is that a word?
[0:04:19 – 0:04:20] Erik: It’s a promontory.
[0:04:20 – 0:04:20] Erik: Promontory.
[0:04:20 – 0:04:21] Erik: There you go.
[0:04:21 – 0:04:23] Erik: That’s kind of like what we’re on up here.
[0:04:23 – 0:04:26] Erik: It’s like big over the lake, but I think it’s going to keep the bugs down.
[0:04:32 – 0:04:34] Erik: Slapping the bag with the field mic.
[0:04:34 – 0:04:34] Erik: That’s right.
[0:04:34 – 0:04:35] Erik: Did you get that?
[0:04:35 – 0:04:36] Erik: I think we got it.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:38] Erik: We got it on multiple things.
[0:04:38 – 0:04:40] Adam: So let’s start with you.
[0:04:41 – 0:04:47] Adam: First off, though, we should also thank our main sponsors, our good friends on Patreon.
[0:04:47 – 0:04:48] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:04:48 – 0:04:49] Adam: Thanks, guys.
[0:04:49 – 0:04:49] Erik: Don’t want to leave you out.
[0:04:50 – 0:04:51] Adam: We’re out here for you.
[0:04:51 – 0:04:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:04:53 – 0:04:54] Erik: They’re paying for parts of this trip.
[0:04:54 – 0:05:03] Adam: We’re trying to do something new here, which is not necessarily the field audio part, but just live recording and doing the what’s in our pack thing.
[0:05:04 – 0:05:05] Adam: Literally, we just came off the water.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:11] Adam: Humped the packs up here, having a little wine in the afternoon.
[0:05:11 – 0:05:13] Adam: I don’t think it’s quite afternoon, honestly.
[0:05:13 – 0:05:14] Adam: It’s still morning wine.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:15] UNKNOWN: I think it is morning wine.
[0:05:15 – 0:05:16] UNKNOWN: That’s why it’s white wine.
[0:05:16 – 0:05:21] Erik: Well, we also did have a, like, 6.45 beer from Mike, but that’s another story.
[0:05:21 – 0:05:22] Adam: True enough.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:23] Adam: So, all right.
[0:05:23 – 0:05:29] Adam: So, well, let’s just start with, like, what we’re outfitted with personally here, and then we’ll get into the packs.
[0:05:30 – 0:05:49] Erik: packs are we going to get into the food pack too or just the we might take a look a little bit but um disturb the bag of frozen meats no maybe take a look at uh a tackle box or something but um for sure the packs and what we’re currently wearing and you can let us know who is uh who’s looking better because we will have who wore it best
[0:05:50 – 0:06:00] Erik: We’ve got a child-grade life jacket and then like a Navy SEAL Team 6 life jacket on my side here.
[0:06:00 – 0:06:02] Adam: Let’s start with the life jackets.
[0:06:02 – 0:06:04] Adam: Personal flotation devices are important.
[0:06:05 – 0:06:08] Adam: The older I get, the more I wear it, and the water is still…
[0:06:09 – 0:06:14] Adam: Although we had noted the water is a lot warmer than I thought it was going to be, it’s still pretty cold, and you wouldn’t want to take a swim there.
[0:06:15 – 0:06:19] Adam: We both wore our PFDs out, so I’m going to start…
[0:06:19 – 0:06:24] Adam: I’ve got this beautiful Steve Zizou-colored child’s life jacket.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:28] Adam: It’s Natalie’s life jacket, actually, and I normally wear a green one.
[0:06:28 – 0:06:29] Adam: That’s not any better.
[0:06:31 – 0:06:34] Adam: This thing probably costs $5 retail, MSRP.
[0:06:35 – 0:06:37] Adam: I don’t know where it came from.
[0:06:37 – 0:06:38] Adam: It just came into our lives.
[0:06:39 – 0:06:40] Adam: It’s a found life jacket.
[0:06:41 – 0:06:45] Adam: It’s a beautiful color, and I’ve got it kind of cinched down here with a couple ââ¬â
[0:06:46 – 0:06:49] Adam: Little clippies on here for water bottles for the portages.
[0:06:49 – 0:06:50] Adam: I’m the water mule on this trip.
[0:06:52 – 0:06:55] Adam: And, uh, I may, I would have went and gotten the green one.
[0:06:55 – 0:07:00] Adam: Um, that fits me a little better, but we left at four, four 30 or five in the morning.
[0:07:00 – 0:07:06] Adam: I was kind of getting everything together and I didn’t want to go up in the garage and disturb our, uh, our, uh, friends up there.
[0:07:06 – 0:07:13] Adam: So I just, uh, our friend has a new dog and I didn’t want to go in there and get the dog barking on the garage apartment.
[0:07:14 – 0:07:17] Adam: So I just took this Steve Zizou one, um,
[0:07:17 – 0:07:19] Adam: Yeah, it’s very fashionable.
[0:07:19 – 0:07:21] Adam: It fits pretty good.
[0:07:21 – 0:07:22] Adam: I’ve got it kind of cinched down.
[0:07:22 – 0:07:28] Adam: I was joking earlier that maybe it was child-sized, but I think it’s not.
[0:07:28 – 0:07:29] Adam: I think it’s actually an adult’s.
[0:07:30 – 0:07:34] Adam: But typically the one Natalie would wear, so I borrowed this from Natalie for the trip.
[0:07:35 – 0:07:38] Adam: On the complete other end of the spectrum, we got a Stolquist.
[0:07:40 – 0:07:44] Erik: Yeah, it’s a Stolquist water wear, I think is what it’s called.
[0:07:45 – 0:07:55] Erik: And the main reason I like it is because it’s got fun little pockets so I don’t get, you know, Dan Stevens-ed if I crack my head on a rock.
[0:07:55 – 0:07:57] Erik: I’ve got all your important supplies here.
[0:07:58 – 0:08:00] Erik: I’ve got extra supplies in the pockets.
[0:08:01 – 0:08:06] Erik: Specifically, the field recorder and the camera that’s also recording.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:07] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:11] Erik: And, yeah, it’s nice and light and it paddles great.
[0:08:11 – 0:08:12] Erik: It really does look good.
[0:08:13 – 0:08:14] Adam: And it just looks good.
[0:08:14 – 0:08:15] Adam: It’s a little too bulky over here.
[0:08:15 – 0:08:18] Adam: I’m pretty jealous of that fine Stolquist.
[0:08:18 – 0:08:20] Adam: I’ve never even heard of it, but now I want one.
[0:08:20 – 0:08:47] Erik: yeah it’s nice it’s actually one of the first times i’ve had it out and it’s kind of one of those things too with like yeah especially the field recorder it’s like yeah not the strongest plastic and you don’t want to just like throw it in the gear bag that’s getting slammed against rocks all day long and then what happens if we need a quick field record some on the water audio can whip it out of the pocket and it’s ready to go more pockets the better honestly i love it
[0:08:47 – 0:08:48] Adam: I want one now.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:50] Adam: It’s kind of on my gear list for sure.
[0:08:51 – 0:08:56] Adam: Um, you know, much as I love this thing, I, I’m not even sure this would help me float if I actually went in the drink.
[0:08:57 – 0:08:58] Erik: We were talking about that.
[0:08:58 – 0:09:00] Adam: It may be just to fill up with water and sink.
[0:09:01 – 0:09:02] Adam: So I’m going to lose that.
[0:09:03 – 0:09:11] Adam: I’ve been a little, um, it’s actually a little warm, you know, I don’t know what the highest, maybe 60, 65, a little windy, but we got a good sun here.
[0:09:11 – 0:09:16] Adam: Um, so moving on, we’ll start maybe move.
[0:09:18 – 0:09:41] Adam: sure let’s move her back all right let me grab this i think we’ll take a break before we get into the gear we can move it back okay um i think let’s get into next is just our personal um fashion outfits let’s start with the hats start with the hats um you you’ve got a classic here it’s uh
[0:09:43 – 0:09:45] Erik: The brand name has worn off in the sweat.
[0:09:46 – 0:09:49] Erik: And there it’s your classic trucker’s hat.
[0:09:50 – 0:09:51] Adam: And it just says Canada on it.
[0:09:52 – 0:09:53] Adam: It’s really nice.
[0:09:54 – 0:10:00] Adam: We always, especially if we’re traveling a border route, we like to represent both sides of the border.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:01] Adam: So you’ve got Canada covered.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:07] Adam: And I’ve got this America hat on that also has Natalie’s.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:10] Adam: I’m basically just wearing all of Natalie’s gear now, I guess.
[0:10:10 – 0:10:11] Adam: This is what happens.
[0:10:12 – 0:10:15] Adam: Happily married and sharing gear.
[0:10:15 – 0:10:18] Adam: So when I first went down and visited her family…
[0:10:18 – 0:10:25] Adam: In Indiana, we were standing there, and we were kind of looking through her closet of old stuff, and I found this hat up on the top shelf.
[0:10:25 – 0:10:26] Adam: I go, what is this?
[0:10:26 – 0:10:27] Adam: Oh, my old hat.
[0:10:27 – 0:10:28] Adam: America.
[0:10:28 – 0:10:30] Adam: Yeah, that’s all it says.
[0:10:30 – 0:10:31] Adam: It’s just a trucker hat.
[0:10:32 – 0:10:45] Adam: And so it’s been in a lot of pictures for Clearwater’s social media, which Eric has thoughtfully cropped just enough out to make it palatable for social media.
[0:10:46 – 0:10:47] Adam: There it is.
[0:10:48 – 0:10:50] Adam: When I put it on this morning, it was fitting very tight.
[0:10:51 – 0:10:59] Adam: And then as the day went on, I guess my head deflated or the volume of my hair deflated or something because I had to cincher down.
[0:10:59 – 0:11:00] Adam: We’re getting into a little wind here.
[0:11:01 – 0:11:02] Adam: So got that.
[0:11:02 – 0:11:07] Adam: I’ve got a new pair of polarized glasses I’m sporting over my big glasses.
[0:11:07 – 0:11:08] Erik: Those look very nice.
[0:11:08 – 0:11:09] Adam: What are they?
[0:11:09 – 0:11:11] Adam: That’s a cocoons brand.
[0:11:12 – 0:11:12] Adam: Top of the line.
[0:11:13 – 0:11:14] Adam: Over X Aviators.
[0:11:15 – 0:11:16] Adam: It’s a C202G.
[0:11:17 – 0:11:18] SPEAKER_00: In case anybody’s wanting to look that up.
[0:11:19 – 0:11:22] Adam: Yeah, with a blue tint, it really helps me identify those reefs.
[0:11:22 – 0:11:31] Adam: And actually, we were coming in and seeing a few nice reefs, and it gave us the idea maybe in the future we’ll do a reef ranker episode.
[0:11:32 – 0:11:35] Adam: You got to have these C202Gs if you want to really see the reefs.
[0:11:36 – 0:11:36] Adam: Yeah.
[0:11:36 – 0:11:38] Adam: So that’s kind of what’s going on on the top end.
[0:11:38 – 0:11:41] Adam: Of course I’m wearing, I don’t wear contacts in the field anymore.
[0:11:42 – 0:11:45] Adam: I got these sweet, sweet birth control glasses.
[0:11:45 – 0:11:50] Adam: When I first got these, my buddy who is in the Marines, they call those birth control.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:51] Adam: They’re really huge.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:55] Adam: I got them for 10 bucks and they keep everything out of my eyes except for black flies.
[0:11:56 – 0:11:56] Erik: Oh yeah.
[0:11:56 – 0:11:57] Erik: Those will get in anything.
[0:11:57 – 0:11:58] Adam: They will.
[0:11:58 – 0:11:59] Adam: They’ll go right through them.
[0:11:59 – 0:12:02] Adam: So that’s kind of what I got going on top end.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:04] Adam: You got some nice looking shades there.
[0:12:05 – 0:12:06] Adam: What do they say they are?
[0:12:06 – 0:12:06] Adam: You tell me.
[0:12:06 – 0:12:07] Adam: One.
[0:12:07 – 0:12:07] Adam: One.
[0:12:08 – 0:12:09] Adam: One polarized.
[0:12:09 – 0:12:12] Adam: These are Kingfish 17022.
[0:12:12 – 0:12:16] Erik: You can get them straight from the manufacturer with that information.
[0:12:16 – 0:12:17] Adam: Beautiful.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:20] Adam: And here, can you hold this?
[0:12:20 – 0:12:21] Adam: I’m a little thirsty.
[0:12:22 – 0:12:27] Erik: Yeah, it looks like you’ve got a, I don’t know what mine is, and I’m not going to take it off and tell you what it is.
[0:12:27 – 0:12:33] Erik: I think it’s probably just a thrift store brand shirt, lightweight kind of flannel-y thing.
[0:12:33 – 0:12:35] Erik: But that looks like a legit Pendleton there, if I were to guess.
[0:12:36 – 0:12:36] Adam: This is, yeah.
[0:12:36 – 0:12:37] Adam: I have a Pendleton.
[0:12:38 – 0:12:42] Adam: It’s a little oversized, and so I don’t normally wear it in, like, everyday life.
[0:12:42 – 0:12:45] Adam: But it’s a camp shirt, unrivaled quality.
[0:12:45 – 0:12:49] Adam: It’s nice and light, keeps you warm no matter if it’s wet or dry.
[0:12:50 – 0:12:52] Adam: And you can roll the sleeves up if you want.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:57] Adam: Beautiful blue and green pattern.
[0:12:57 – 0:12:58] Adam: I love it.
[0:12:58 – 0:13:03] Adam: It goes really nice with the hat and with the pants, which we’ll get to next.
[0:13:03 – 0:13:03] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:13:03 – 0:13:06] Erik: You’re going to show your Obama shirt off, aren’t you?
[0:13:06 – 0:13:07] Erik: Oh, heck yeah, we are.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:09] Erik: That’s a classic camping shirt.
[0:13:10 – 0:13:16] Adam: Anybody following the podcast or Clearwater social media, I’m sure has seen this Obama shirt.
[0:13:17 – 0:13:19] Adam: I almost wear it exclusively now for camping.
[0:13:20 – 0:13:21] Adam: It’s a black shirt.
[0:13:22 – 0:13:23] Adam: Getting a little sun faded.
[0:13:24 – 0:13:25] Adam: Barack.
[0:13:26 – 0:13:27] Adam: Barack and roll.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:28] Erik: Obama in 08.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:31] Erik: That’s almost a 12-year-old shirt now.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:32] Erik: Isn’t that insane?
[0:13:32 – 0:13:39] Adam: I found it at Savers in Duluth, and I wear it pretty much on all camping trips now.
[0:13:39 – 0:13:47] Adam: I did bring one extra T-shirt, which we’ll get to in the pack later maybe, but I’m going to basically just wear this T-shirt and this wool shirt the entire trip.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:50] Adam: I will probably not sleep in the wool, but…
[0:13:50 – 0:13:54] Adam: I don’t think I’ll take this Obama shirt off unless it gets really wet for some reason.
[0:13:54 – 0:13:56] Adam: But forecast is looking good.
[0:13:56 – 0:13:58] Adam: I don’t think we’re going to get a ton of rain on this trip.
[0:13:58 – 0:14:01] Adam: Maybe on Tuesday morning or Tuesday afternoon on the way out.
[0:14:03 – 0:14:04] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:14:04 – 0:14:05] Adam: Overall, I’m feeling pretty good.
[0:14:05 – 0:14:06] Adam: You got the Loon shirt on?
[0:14:06 – 0:14:07] Erik: Of course.
[0:14:07 – 0:14:08] Adam: Give me that thing.
[0:14:09 – 0:14:12] Adam: So Eric’s got a shirt he’s been wearing on camping trips even longer than I have.
[0:14:12 – 0:14:15] Erik: I think this has gone on every Quetico trip.
[0:14:15 – 0:14:17] Adam: I don’t think I’ve not camped in this shirt.
[0:14:18 – 0:14:19] Adam: Holy sh**.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:19] Adam: Look at that thing.
[0:14:21 – 0:14:22] Adam: Timberlands.
[0:14:24 – 0:14:26] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:14:26 – 0:14:28] Adam: Lake of the Woods, Timberlands Resort.
[0:14:29 – 0:14:32] Adam: Got a big burn mark right through the beak of that thing.
[0:14:34 – 0:14:35] Adam: Oh, look at that.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:36] Adam: Is that wicking?
[0:14:36 – 0:14:37] UNKNOWN: No, it’s not.
[0:14:37 – 0:14:38] UNKNOWN: It’s actually too warm sometimes.
[0:14:39 – 0:14:42] Adam: Yeah, he’s wearing two shirts underneath his flannel here.
[0:14:43 – 0:14:44] Adam: Very nice.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:50] Adam: You were wearing that red loon shirt on trips back when I still had the zebra shirt from our Quetico trip.
[0:14:50 – 0:14:52] Adam: I think you were still wearing that loon.
[0:14:52 – 0:14:54] Adam: Yes.
[0:14:54 – 0:14:59] Adam: You know, there’s a couple pictures on the Clearwater website of me wearing that fabulous zebra shirt.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:01] Adam: I do miss that shirt, but…
[0:15:02 – 0:15:05] Adam: But Obama’s with me forever and always.
[0:15:06 – 0:15:09] Adam: And so that’s what we’re wearing up top.
[0:15:10 – 0:15:11] Adam: We’re making our way.
[0:15:11 – 0:15:13] Adam: Are people interested in this?
[0:15:13 – 0:15:14] Adam: I think they will be.
[0:15:14 – 0:15:14] Adam: I think they are.
[0:15:15 – 0:15:16] Adam: I mean, this is real.
[0:15:16 – 0:15:18] Adam: This isn’t staged in any way.
[0:15:20 – 0:15:24] Adam: We literally just got here, and this is what it looks like when you’re camping with us.
[0:15:24 – 0:15:30] Adam: We’re just giving it to you straight, the straight facts, folks, and I hope you appreciate it.
[0:15:31 – 0:15:32] Adam: If you don’t, that’s fine.
[0:15:33 – 0:15:33] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:36] Adam: I just saw a thing on Reddit the other day.
[0:15:36 – 0:15:39] Adam: Somebody’s going into the Boundary Waters for the first time.
[0:15:39 – 0:15:41] Adam: He said, what kind of pants should I go with?
[0:15:41 – 0:15:45] Adam: I need something that dries quick, lots of pockets.
[0:15:45 – 0:16:00] Adam: rugged yes and the first comment the first comment was fall ravens go for following because they’re like oh we tried these other ones they’re a little too light tried these other ones they didn’t quite uh stand up and then yeah fall raven so i’m wearing the fall raven blues
[0:16:03 – 0:16:04] Erik: What does the fox have to say?
[0:16:04 – 0:16:06] Adam: G1000, baby.
[0:16:06 – 0:16:07] Adam: G1000.
[0:16:07 – 0:16:11] Adam: This stuff, it’s the best pants I’ve ever worn in the Boundary Waters.
[0:16:11 – 0:16:12] Adam: I’ve got a couple pairs.
[0:16:12 – 0:16:13] Erik: You just, like, work in those.
[0:16:14 – 0:16:16] Adam: I wear them in the deli at work, yeah.
[0:16:16 – 0:16:17] Adam: I wear them in the kitchen.
[0:16:18 – 0:16:21] Adam: I basically wear Fall Raven pants year-round at this point.
[0:16:21 – 0:16:26] Adam: I’ll wear them back to work after the trip as long as I don’t put too many burn holes in them.
[0:16:26 – 0:16:27] Adam: Yeah.
[0:16:27 – 0:16:28] Adam: They’re amazing.
[0:16:28 – 0:16:30] Adam: I didn’t even know.
[0:16:30 – 0:16:31] Adam: Plenty of good pockets.
[0:16:32 – 0:16:36] Adam: I got my Galaxy S6 Active, this thing you can take underwater pictures with.
[0:16:37 – 0:16:38] Erik: Ooh, you’re going through your pockets.
[0:16:38 – 0:16:40] Adam: Yeah, well, we’re going through the pockets, what’s in every pocket.
[0:16:41 – 0:16:45] Adam: And so I’m bringing, that’s my old phone now, but I just keep it around for boundary water trips.
[0:16:46 – 0:16:47] Adam: It’s got a really good camera.
[0:16:47 – 0:16:50] Adam: It’s waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about it too much.
[0:16:50 – 0:16:52] Adam: And what else do you need?
[0:16:52 – 0:16:54] Adam: I mean, pretty good battery life.
[0:16:54 – 0:16:57] Adam: I don’t know if it’ll last until Tuesday, but you don’t need to.
[0:16:57 – 0:16:59] Erik: You don’t have Terry Folds downloaded.
[0:16:59 – 0:17:01] Adam: No, we’re not going to be really playing too much music.
[0:17:01 – 0:17:06] Adam: I was playing a little music on the car on the way up just through the Bluetooth.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:07] Erik: Craft work.
[0:17:07 – 0:17:29] Adam: yeah mr roboto i have a uh the black flies were looking a little nasty the last couple days so i did bring a whole head net i have that right in the pocket they don’t seem too bad yet no they really don’t and we’re in the advantage of this spot with the wind is uh yeah hopefully that’ll keep the bugs at bay i got my uh my wallet in here so we can go get beer
[0:17:30 – 0:17:31] Erik: On Adams?
[0:17:31 – 0:17:33] Adam: Yeah.
[0:17:34 – 0:17:35] Adam: That’s it.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:36] Adam: That’s all I have in my pockets.
[0:17:36 – 0:17:37] Adam: All right.
[0:17:37 – 0:17:41] Adam: And then on the feet, I’ve got the Astrels.
[0:17:42 – 0:17:43] Erik: Nice.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:44] Erik: I’m jealous.
[0:17:45 – 0:17:46] Adam: And wool socks.
[0:17:46 – 0:17:49] Adam: Darn tough wool socks with Astrels, just one pair.
[0:17:50 – 0:17:51] Adam: And I’ve got them kind of cinched down.
[0:17:51 – 0:17:55] Adam: I was telling Eric on drive across Round Lake this morning, I got one.
[0:17:56 – 0:17:58] Adam: My big toe on my left is a little sore.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:04] Adam: I’ve been kind of giving it Epsom salt baths and making sure I’m trimming up the nail nice.
[0:18:04 – 0:18:05] Erik: It’s not the dead toe, though.
[0:18:05 – 0:18:05] Adam: It’s not dead.
[0:18:05 – 0:18:06] Adam: It’s just sore.
[0:18:06 – 0:18:08] Adam: And so I’ve got to take care.
[0:18:08 – 0:18:11] Adam: It’s honestly worse than the camp slippers, which we will get to.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:13] Adam: These you can lace them up really nice.
[0:18:13 – 0:18:15] Adam: And they’re snug as a bug.
[0:18:17 – 0:18:18] Adam: Let’s look at the grips.
[0:18:20 – 0:18:21] Erik: Hot grip video there.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:27] Adam: I mean, everything’s pretty dry right now, but you get me on a wet root, wet rocks.
[0:18:27 – 0:18:28] Adam: You’re going to eat up those roots.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:29] Adam: I don’t slip.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:31] Adam: I don’t slip at all.
[0:18:31 – 0:18:37] Adam: Went through a bunch of mud, wet footing it, and, yeah, it’s nice and warm.
[0:18:37 – 0:18:39] Adam: So I’m feeling pretty good right now.
[0:18:42 – 0:18:51] Adam: That’s all I think I need to share as far as what I’m wearing, except for my sexy underwear, which, sorry, folks, that’s only for the Patreons.
[0:18:52 – 0:18:52] Erik: Yeah, pop.
[0:18:52 – 0:18:54] Adam: We’ll get to see that, whether they like it or not.
[0:18:56 – 0:18:58] Erik: I didn’t sign up for this.
[0:18:58 – 0:19:03] Adam: All right, so Eric’s got, what do you got for pants?
[0:19:03 – 0:19:03] Adam: What are these?
[0:19:04 – 0:19:07] Adam: Random camp pants.
[0:19:07 – 0:19:08] Adam: Seven to eight burn holes in them.
[0:19:09 – 0:19:10] Adam: These I’ve seen a few trips.
[0:19:11 – 0:19:17] Adam: The real highlight of this lower end tour is going to be the Acelo boots, though.
[0:19:18 – 0:19:20] Erik: Honestly, I don’t know what these are.
[0:19:20 – 0:19:21] Erik: They might be like cools or something.
[0:19:21 – 0:19:22] Erik: I have no idea.
[0:19:22 – 0:19:24] Erik: I’d have to look at a tag, and I’m not going to do that.
[0:19:24 – 0:19:25] Adam: I don’t think they are.
[0:19:25 – 0:19:26] SPEAKER_00: I don’t know what they are.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:27] Adam: They’re fine.
[0:19:27 – 0:19:29] SPEAKER_00: But, yes, the foot.
[0:19:29 – 0:19:37] Erik: Those are your classic A-Solo, which are probably best for dry hiking.
[0:19:37 – 0:19:43] Adam: Yeah, I wear mine at work sometimes, and I’ve worn them on two different Grand Canyon trips.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:49] Adam: I’ve never worn my A-Solo on a Boundary Waters trip, but you really prefer them to each their own.
[0:19:49 – 0:19:50] Adam: Really great support.
[0:19:50 – 0:19:51] Adam: You can’t argue with that.
[0:19:51 – 0:19:52] Erik: No, not at all.
[0:19:52 – 0:19:56] Erik: I don’t know if they have a specific name, but that’s just…
[0:19:56 – 0:19:58] Erik: I don’t think they make any other kind of boot.
[0:19:58 – 0:20:00] Erik: It’s an ASL boot.
[0:20:00 – 0:20:00] Erik: Yeah.
[0:20:00 – 0:20:01] Adam: Men’s boot.
[0:20:01 – 0:20:02] Erik: Yes.
[0:20:03 – 0:20:04] Erik: Champion Ones or something.
[0:20:04 – 0:20:05] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:20:05 – 0:20:07] Erik: I also have on my belt…
[0:20:08 – 0:20:15] Erik: a special little Leatherman wave for grabbing fish and cutting stuff.
[0:20:15 – 0:20:17] Erik: You know, you know what those things are.
[0:20:17 – 0:20:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:18 – 0:20:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:20:18 – 0:20:20] Erik: I don’t know what else I got in my pocket.
[0:20:20 – 0:20:21] Erik: I have a, I have a bunch of random stuff.
[0:20:21 – 0:20:26] Erik: I have a bungee dealy Bob that didn’t end up getting used, but ended up in my pocket.
[0:20:27 – 0:20:28] Erik: I have a,
[0:20:29 – 0:20:30] Erik: Little thing of Carmex.
[0:20:30 – 0:20:32] Erik: This is riveting.
[0:20:32 – 0:20:39] Erik: I’ve got my, I don’t have to pull out the licenses and the permits, but those, I can assure you, Forest Service, we know you listen.
[0:20:39 – 0:20:40] Adam: They’re in my pocket.
[0:20:40 – 0:20:46] Adam: He’s got the permit, and I’m pretty sure I don’t have a copy of my actual fishing license, but I have a screen grab on my phone.
[0:20:47 – 0:20:51] Adam: I have to stand by that statement and tell them, ask to actually produce evidence.
[0:20:52 – 0:20:56] Adam: And then a Bic lighter in red.
[0:20:57 – 0:20:57] Adam: In red.
[0:20:58 – 0:20:58] Adam: Perfect.
[0:20:58 – 0:20:59] Erik: Yes.
[0:20:59 – 0:20:59] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:20:59 – 0:21:04] Adam: I mean, I think there’s something to be said for just the detail of like, this is what we’re actually out in the park with.
[0:21:04 – 0:21:05] Adam: Yeah.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:10] Adam: You know, a lot of talk, a lot of conjecture on the show, like, yeah, yeah, it’s this and this.
[0:21:10 – 0:21:17] Adam: But we actually just paddled from Round Lake out to Little Sag, and this is what we have on us.
[0:21:17 – 0:21:18] Adam: Everything else is in the packs.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:23] Adam: I think we were talking when we were leaving the landing how what a clean operation we got.
[0:21:23 – 0:21:24] Adam: Everything’s in two packs.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:28] Adam: Literally the only thing that’s loose on the portages is the two paddles.
[0:21:29 – 0:21:31] Adam: And the two water bottles that you just clipped to your life jacket.
[0:21:31 – 0:21:33] Adam: Yeah, I’m mulling those things.
[0:21:34 – 0:21:35] Adam: That’s what we’re wearing.
[0:21:35 – 0:21:40] Adam: We’re going to hop into the big Granite Gear pack next, and maybe we’ll talk about our paddles as well.
[0:21:40 – 0:21:44] Adam: But let’s just get a quick pause and check on the battery levels.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:45] Adam: Let’s do that.
[0:21:45 – 0:21:47] Adam: And we’ll get into the second act shortly.
[0:21:47 – 0:21:48] Adam: Thank you.
[0:21:48 – 0:21:51] Adam: Yeah, just in case.
[0:21:52 – 0:21:54] Adam: This is the end of track one.
[0:21:56 – 0:21:58] Adam: Okay, and we’re back from break.
[0:21:59 – 0:22:03] Adam: We’re ready to get into this beautiful Granite Gear pack.
[0:22:04 – 0:22:05] Adam: We kind of talked about it already, right?
[0:22:05 – 0:22:06] Erik: Yeah, we did.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:08] Adam: It’s the biggest Granite Gear you can get.
[0:22:09 – 0:22:10] Adam: It’s all in black.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:12] Adam: I love this pack.
[0:22:13 – 0:22:14] Adam: Do you have a bunch of these?
[0:22:14 – 0:22:14] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:22:14 – 0:22:18] Adam: I’ve never seen one in all black until we started taking them on trips out of the outfitting room.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:22] Adam: When you’re outfitted by Clearwater Lodge, you’re getting only the finest stuff.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:23] Erik: Look at this thing.
[0:22:25 – 0:22:29] Adam: So it can hold a metric load of things.
[0:22:30 – 0:22:32] Adam: We have maybe three quarters full.
[0:22:33 – 0:22:35] Erik: Maybe a little bit more, like 80%.
[0:22:36 – 0:22:43] Erik: I think you could easily, like a normal American, well, no, maybe like a normal European man, you could fit in it.
[0:22:44 – 0:22:44] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:22:45 – 0:22:47] Adam: Sure, yeah.
[0:22:47 – 0:22:53] Adam: You know, we had the full bag of white wine on the top of this, and it was pretty heavy.
[0:22:53 – 0:22:54] Adam: Oh, look at that.
[0:22:54 – 0:22:58] Adam: We got an old yak wool from Nepal.
[0:22:59 – 0:23:03] Adam: This is a product of a hand-knit wool from Nepal.
[0:23:04 – 0:23:24] Adam: wearing that and you’ve got a nice saint jean’s bay wool ah yes this is uh kind of like close to the same color that yours is but a little bit thicker and those just got thrown in after the first portage because we got too hot yeah we wore those um basically up to missing link and then we’re like okay that’s enough of that you got a liner in here it looks like always a quality move
[0:23:25 – 0:23:26] Adam: Going to have a little liner.
[0:23:26 – 0:23:27] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:23:27 – 0:23:31] Adam: First things first, the big, big, big old Helinox.
[0:23:31 – 0:23:33] Adam: I don’t know what the name of this thing is.
[0:23:33 – 0:23:37] Adam: It’s like the ultra deluxe super Barka lounger Helinox.
[0:23:37 – 0:23:39] Erik: It’s like I’m surprised it doesn’t rock.
[0:23:40 – 0:23:40] Adam: It should.
[0:23:40 – 0:23:42] Adam: It weighs, I don’t know, a couple pounds.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:44] Adam: Well worth the weight.
[0:23:44 – 0:23:45] Adam: It’s pretty big.
[0:23:46 – 0:23:49] Adam: But when we set this thing up later, we’ll get some pictures.
[0:23:49 – 0:23:52] Adam: It’s got really, really sturdy poles.
[0:23:54 – 0:23:55] Adam: This is the old classic.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:57] Adam: Is that a Coglins brand?
[0:23:57 – 0:23:58] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:23:58 – 0:23:59] Erik: It might be, honestly.
[0:23:59 – 0:24:00] Erik: It seems too nice.
[0:24:00 – 0:24:07] Adam: It’s a little too nice to be Coglins, but just the classic green hooks with a yellow rope stringer.
[0:24:08 – 0:24:09] Adam: You see these everywhere.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:09] Adam: Yeah.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:10] Adam: They’re really nice.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:12] Adam: You can lock down a fish on them.
[0:24:12 – 0:24:17] Adam: I’ve always preferred this kind of stringer to just a regular old string stringer.
[0:24:18 – 0:24:21] Adam: Well, it’s a slightly upgraded stringer, let’s just say that.
[0:24:21 – 0:24:24] Erik: It’s just a string with a metal poker on the edge?
[0:24:24 – 0:24:24] Adam: Yeah, yeah.
[0:24:24 – 0:24:25] Adam: I mean, come on.
[0:24:26 – 0:24:30] Erik: This is, I think, the same stringer we’ve talked about when the walleye kind of got away on caribou.
[0:24:30 – 0:24:31] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:24:31 – 0:24:32] Adam: It’s the exact same stringer.
[0:24:32 – 0:24:33] Erik: Nice.
[0:24:33 – 0:24:34] Adam: So I found it last night.
[0:24:34 – 0:24:35] Adam: I was going through all this stuff.
[0:24:35 – 0:24:36] Adam: I said, do you have a stringer?
[0:24:37 – 0:24:37] Adam: I’m not sure.
[0:24:37 – 0:24:39] Adam: I know I have one somewhere, and it appeared.
[0:24:39 – 0:24:41] Adam: So it made it in the pack.
[0:24:41 – 0:24:41] Erik: Nice.
[0:24:42 – 0:24:43] Adam: Hopefully we’ll put some fish on there.
[0:24:45 – 0:24:45] Adam: Water pump.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:49] Adam: Got the Catadine drinking water pump.
[0:24:49 – 0:24:50] Erik: Hiker Pro, I believe.
[0:24:50 – 0:24:51] Adam: Hiker Pro.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:56] Adam: Always got a nice… Got to have a new filter in there.
[0:24:56 – 0:25:00] Erik: Almost always try to put in a new one, but depends on the lakes that you go out on.
[0:25:00 – 0:25:09] Erik: A lot of times you can get away with using one for a whole season if you’re not pumping inches thick pollen off the lakes, which is…
[0:25:09 – 0:25:35] Adam: what we’re dealing with right now got a little bit of the yellow stuff on top right now the old pollen milk on the lake surface but i think my first one of these i i had it for two seasons before i replaced the filter on it pretty nice uh real quick if you’re on a portage uh need some water quick and just don’t trust it or just in camp want a quick one uh we have another filter with us we’ll get to later but this one’s good for just on the fly keep it on the top of the pack
[0:25:37 – 0:25:39] Erik: This is all just coming out kind of randomly.
[0:25:39 – 0:25:40] Erik: No, this is how we stuffed it in there.
[0:25:40 – 0:25:41] Adam: A lot of my stuff is on the top.
[0:25:42 – 0:25:52] Adam: This is my ENO double nest with the super slap straps and the classic baby blue and cobalt blue, I guess.
[0:25:53 – 0:25:56] Adam: I’ve had this particular hammock.
[0:25:57 – 0:26:02] Adam: Ever since I started hammocking, I think this is the first hammock I ever slept in and the only hammock I’ve ever slept in.
[0:26:03 – 0:26:04] Adam: That’s probably not true, but…
[0:26:04 – 0:26:05] Erik: The one that you writhed.
[0:26:05 – 0:26:06] Adam: I writhed.
[0:26:07 – 0:26:10] Adam: Yeah, that was on the Clearwater Loop trip I first took this one out.
[0:26:10 – 0:26:13] Adam: So this one’s been with me for a long time.
[0:26:13 – 0:26:15] Adam: How much of that do you want to go through?
[0:26:15 – 0:26:18] Adam: Oh, let’s open it up.
[0:26:18 – 0:26:19] Adam: Here, grab this.
[0:26:19 – 0:26:20] Adam: All right.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:20] Adam: All right, so hold on.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:21] Adam: Just set the stage.
[0:26:21 – 0:26:22] Erik: It’s a…
[0:26:23 – 0:26:52] Adam: the heck is this anyways it’s just a it’s it’s a dry bag it’s like a 35 liter blue dry bag it’s pretty much socks and underwear um i have no art supplies on this trip i have one extra t-shirt in here i have a uh like a level three lower unit like wool long underwear and then uh like a level two top in green i have a pair of slippers let’s check these out here i’ll
[0:26:59 – 0:27:03] Adam: Yeah, this is just mainly stuff that I’m only going to use in camp at night.
[0:27:03 – 0:27:05] Erik: Those look like they’ve got some usage on them.
[0:27:05 – 0:27:08] Adam: Got some Keens camp slippers.
[0:27:09 – 0:27:10] Adam: These have been on a few trips.
[0:27:10 – 0:27:11] Adam: They look like it.
[0:27:11 – 0:27:12] Adam: You can’t tell.
[0:27:12 – 0:27:13] Adam: I also wear these around the house still.
[0:27:13 – 0:27:14] Adam: They’re still my house slippers.
[0:27:15 – 0:27:17] Erik: I shouldn’t get the camera too close to them.
[0:27:17 – 0:27:18] Adam: You ever seen somebody do this to an old slipper?
[0:27:19 – 0:27:20] Adam: They’re made out of bamboo.
[0:27:20 – 0:27:21] Adam: They have bamboo lining.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:22] Adam: They still don’t stink.
[0:27:22 – 0:27:23] Adam: It’s amazing.
[0:27:23 – 0:27:24] Adam: I’ve had these on so many trips.
[0:27:24 – 0:27:33] Adam: I usually keep the heel down like this, but because of the aforementioned toe issue, I will actually probably be propping up that left heel just to keep them on there a little more snug.
[0:27:33 – 0:27:35] Adam: Look at that toe guard on these things.
[0:27:35 – 0:27:39] Erik: That’s like the stuff that you spray the back of truck beds with.
[0:27:39 – 0:27:39] Adam: Yeah, it is.
[0:27:40 – 0:28:07] Adam: uh good grip um basically once i get the wet feet off and i’m settled in for camp for the night i put these babies on good cushion i mean honestly i could portage in these if i had to you absolutely had hardcore got a nat geo my nat geo not just any nat geo this is my eastern section of the boundary waters nat geo a lot of secrets in this map we’re not going to open this up on camera but i’ll be taking notes on this the whole trip
[0:28:07 – 0:28:13] Adam: Adding to the blank space that we are currently in, this is all new water for me and for this Nat Geo.
[0:28:13 – 0:28:17] Erik: Maybe you could take a picture and just have that shared for the poppin’ wheelers only.
[0:28:17 – 0:28:18] Adam: Yeah, maybe.
[0:28:18 – 0:28:29] Adam: I did put a picture on the Instagram before we left last night just of our target for tomorrow, which is Thomas, or I’m sorry, Boulder and Adams, my lake.
[0:28:30 – 0:28:30] Erik: Adams Lake.
[0:28:31 – 0:28:33] Adam: I got some 30% deet.
[0:28:35 – 0:28:40] Adam: I got a little bit of 30 SPF suntan lotion.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:49] Adam: And this is the real good stuff, the Deep Woods Sportsman 98.25 Deet.
[0:28:49 – 0:28:52] Adam: Don’t spray this on your skin, folks.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:53] Adam: That’s why it’s in a separate bag.
[0:28:54 – 0:28:57] Adam: Yeah, if it gets loose, it’ll melt through plastic.
[0:28:57 – 0:28:59] Adam: It’ll melt right through this dry bag.
[0:29:00 – 0:29:05] Adam: Uh, we got a random waterproof thing with some sort of horse tranquilizer pills.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:06] Adam: I got fishing.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:08] Adam: I got my three fishing lures in here.
[0:29:08 – 0:29:09] Adam: We should open this up.
[0:29:09 – 0:29:10] Adam: Oh, you only brought three fishing lures?
[0:29:11 – 0:29:11] Erik: I only have three fishing lures.
[0:29:11 – 0:29:12] Erik: That’s all you need.
[0:29:12 – 0:29:14] Erik: Yeah, it’s probably true.
[0:29:14 – 0:29:15] Erik: Makes me look like I’m loaded.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:17] Adam: Yeah, no, you got six.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:21] Adam: I got some sweet prescription drugs here in case of any injuries.
[0:29:22 – 0:29:29] Adam: I actually brought hand warmers for the sometimes in my hammock sets when it’s going to be down in the high 30s tonight, I think.
[0:29:29 – 0:29:29] Erik: Yeah.
[0:29:30 – 0:29:34] Adam: And sometimes it’s nice to have one just down by the feet, especially if you’re in a hammock with a little wind.
[0:29:35 – 0:29:39] Adam: I got a brand new lime green chartreuse Bic lighter.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:43] Adam: I have a husky jerk.
[0:29:46 – 0:30:00] Adam: uh what color is that that’s the navy with chartreuse i i can’t remember the actual name of that a tiny little scissors some moleskin an f-set slim and a one it’s a 16 gram f f-set slim
[0:30:01 – 0:30:03] Adam: And that’s a good all-around spoon.
[0:30:03 – 0:30:06] Adam: And then the dimpled little Clio with blue to silver.
[0:30:08 – 0:30:10] Adam: And I got a couple extra little snap swivels in here.
[0:30:10 – 0:30:15] Adam: And then real important, if you got a f***ed up toe, you want to have a nice pair of tweezers.
[0:30:15 – 0:30:18] Adam: Or if we get any, like, bugs or anything, we have to remove.
[0:30:18 – 0:30:19] Adam: So this is kind of a…
[0:30:20 – 0:30:36] Adam: fishing tackle and med kit that’s my med kit at least i think you have some other stuff yeah i’ve got a good lord yeah uh there’s a there’s a first aid kit in there somewhere all right and then yeah like i said i got a toothbrush
[0:30:38 – 0:31:04] Adam: and just generally a couple extra pair of underwear and socks i have specific socks just for in camp and then i have lighter so i have like some heavier wool socks for just in camp with the slippers and then i have a couple pairs of lighter socks that are just designated for wet footing so that’s generally what’s in that pack all right is that yours see the summit i’ve had this uh
[0:31:06 – 0:31:23] Adam: from whence you came see the summit 20 liter 15 liter dry bag and hint is that what it’s called I guess inside it’s a mountain hardware synthetic
[0:31:24 – 0:31:27] Adam: I think it’s rated to 20 or 15 degrees.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:30] Adam: It’s definitely not good to 15 degrees anymore.
[0:31:30 – 0:31:31] Adam: I’ve had this for a long time.
[0:31:32 – 0:31:33] Erik: You had that in Quetico.
[0:31:33 – 0:31:34] Adam: I’ve had this since 2011.
[0:31:34 – 0:31:39] Adam: I bought this new for our Quetico trip, and it’s still a really good all-around bag.
[0:31:39 – 0:31:40] Adam: I use this all seasons.
[0:31:41 – 0:31:48] Adam: In the winter, I’d maybe double it up with a bigger bag, but not going to take it out, but it packs down really nice and small.
[0:31:48 – 0:31:49] Erik: Yes.
[0:31:49 – 0:31:50] Adam: Slightly bigger than a hammock.
[0:31:52 – 0:31:53] Erik: What’s next in the pack?
[0:31:55 – 0:31:57] Adam: We got paper towels.
[0:31:58 – 0:32:06] Adam: It’s always handy in a nice double plastic bag here with a little… Micro litter, twist tie.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:09] Adam: Yeah, first aid kit.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:11] Erik: Ah, that is a nice first aid kit.
[0:32:11 – 0:32:13] Adam: The official first aid kit.
[0:32:13 – 0:32:15] Erik: By Adventure Medical Kits.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:16] Adam: It’s good for one to four people.
[0:32:16 – 0:32:17] Adam: Be safe.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:18] Adam: Be safe.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:19] Adam: This is so funny.
[0:32:20 – 0:32:20] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:20 – 0:32:21] Adam: Never really looked at this thing.
[0:32:21 – 0:32:22] Erik: Yeah.
[0:32:22 – 0:32:22] Erik: What’s this guy doing?
[0:32:22 – 0:32:23] Erik: Is he birding?
[0:32:23 – 0:32:25] Erik: He’s birding with a big backpack.
[0:32:25 – 0:32:25] Adam: 2.0?
[0:32:26 – 0:32:26] Erik: What was in 1.0?
[0:32:27 – 0:32:28] Erik: What have they improved?
[0:32:28 – 0:32:29] Erik: It’s just a smaller one.
[0:32:29 – 0:32:30] Adam: Okay.
[0:32:30 – 0:32:32] Adam: Well, we’ll open it up quick and just take a peek.
[0:32:32 – 0:32:33] Erik: No, you can’t open it up.
[0:32:33 – 0:32:35] Adam: It’s zip-tied shut.
[0:32:35 – 0:32:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:35 – 0:32:36] Adam: All right.
[0:32:36 – 0:32:37] Adam: We won’t open it up unless we need to.
[0:32:37 – 0:32:38] Erik: You can look on the back.
[0:32:39 – 0:32:40] Adam: Oh, there you go.
[0:32:40 – 0:32:41] Adam: There’s a whole list.
[0:32:41 – 0:32:42] Erik: You got survival tools.
[0:32:42 – 0:32:45] Erik: There’s a slim rescue howler TM that’s trademarked.
[0:32:45 – 0:32:46] Erik: Whistle?
[0:32:49 – 0:32:49] Adam: No.
[0:32:50 – 0:32:51] Adam: There’s a howler whistle?
[0:32:51 – 0:32:52] Adam: Howl.
[0:32:52 – 0:32:52] Adam: Woo.
[0:32:54 – 0:32:55] Erik: What?
[0:32:55 – 0:32:57] Erik: I’ve never noticed that that’s trademarked.
[0:32:57 – 0:32:57] Erik: For what reason?
[0:32:57 – 0:32:58] Erik: We have moleskins.
[0:32:59 – 0:32:59] Adam: That’s nice.
[0:32:59 – 0:33:00] Erik: A cold pack.
[0:33:01 – 0:33:01] Erik: Safety pins.
[0:33:02 – 0:33:03] Erik: Oh, we have a splinter picker.
[0:33:04 – 0:33:05] Erik: Well, mine’s better.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:06] Erik: I’m sure.
[0:33:06 – 0:33:08] Adam: Mine’s a 3.0 splinter pecker.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:11] Erik: I’ve never heard of it called a splinter pecker.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:14] Adam: What do we got for drugs besides the horse pills I brought?
[0:33:14 – 0:33:18] Adam: We have antibiotic ointment, sting and itch relief wipes.
[0:33:19 – 0:33:24] Adam: We got some 200 milligram ibuprofens, some 500 milligram acetaminophen.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:28] Adam: And we have a little antihistamine and some aspirin.
[0:33:28 – 0:33:31] Adam: So we got a lot of things covered if we get our aches and pains.
[0:33:32 – 0:33:36] Erik: You need some help falling asleep, you can pop a couple of those diphenhydramines and you’ll really get zonked.
[0:33:36 – 0:33:41] Adam: That’s the next level of our Patreon is the popping the diphenhydramines.
[0:33:42 – 0:33:46] Adam: Pro tip, you pop a couple of those before a long flight and you’ll be out.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:50] Adam: We found this in Eric’s vehicle right before we left.
[0:33:50 – 0:33:53] Adam: It’s a, what is this, from a quick trip?
[0:33:54 – 0:33:55] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:33:55 – 0:33:56] Adam: It’s a little plastic bag.
[0:33:56 – 0:33:57] Adam: It’s our garbage bag.
[0:33:58 – 0:33:58] Adam: Fun.
[0:33:58 – 0:34:00] SPEAKER_00: It’s important.
[0:34:00 – 0:34:01] Erik: You’ve got to have a garbage bag.
[0:34:01 – 0:34:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:34:02 – 0:34:03] Erik: What are we on to next here?
[0:34:04 – 0:34:07] Erik: Oh, yeah, that looks like the cook kit.
[0:34:07 – 0:34:08] Erik: Oh, boy, all right.
[0:34:08 – 0:34:11] Erik: We’re going to find something that we’re missing and it’s going to be caught live in action.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:12] Adam: Two plates.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:13] Adam: We only need two plates.
[0:34:14 – 0:34:14] Adam: We’ve got red and blue.
[0:34:15 – 0:34:16] Adam: You can guess whose is who.
[0:34:18 – 0:34:20] SPEAKER_00: We’ll just set it here for now.
[0:34:21 – 0:34:22] Adam: Got a big water boiler.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:24] Erik: That matches our water bottle system.
[0:34:24 – 0:34:26] Adam: Yeah, everything’s red and blue.
[0:34:26 – 0:34:27] Adam: Ooh, look at this thing.
[0:34:27 – 0:34:27] Erik: Look at that.
[0:34:28 – 0:34:28] Erik: There’s two of them in there.
[0:34:28 – 0:34:29] Erik: There’s two of them.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:30] Erik: You should open it up.
[0:34:30 – 0:34:32] Erik: The stove and fuel is in there.
[0:34:32 – 0:34:33] Adam: Oh, okay.
[0:34:33 – 0:34:34] Erik: I hope to God it’s in there.
[0:34:34 – 0:34:35] Adam: It better be.
[0:34:36 – 0:34:37] Erik: We could survive without a stove and fuel.
[0:34:37 – 0:34:38] Adam: A little bungee pack.
[0:34:40 – 0:34:43] Adam: Two lids, two fuels, we got a bunch of matches, another lighter.
[0:34:43 – 0:34:44] Erik: Diamond brand.
[0:34:44 – 0:34:46] Erik: Holy moly, look at that thing.
[0:34:47 – 0:34:48] Adam: Pramus power gas.
[0:34:50 – 0:34:52] Erik: And Optimus stove.
[0:34:52 – 0:34:56] Erik: It’s one of those little screw-on types that sit on the ground.
[0:34:56 – 0:34:57] Adam: And a pot grabber, obviously.
[0:34:57 – 0:34:58] Adam: You’re going to need that.
[0:34:58 – 0:34:59] Erik: You need the grabber.
[0:35:03 – 0:35:03] Erik: What else?
[0:35:03 – 0:35:04] Adam: The plate’s back in there.
[0:35:04 – 0:35:04] Adam: Wait.
[0:35:05 – 0:35:05] Adam: Wait.
[0:35:06 – 0:35:07] Adam: Oh.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:08] Adam: And red and blue.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:09] Erik: Very important.
[0:35:09 – 0:35:10] Erik: Camp troughs.
[0:35:11 – 0:35:12] Adam: We can have coffee in these.
[0:35:12 – 0:35:13] Adam: We can have granola in these.
[0:35:14 – 0:35:16] Adam: We can make rum and tangs later.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:16] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:35:16 – 0:35:20] Erik: I can’t wait to go look at your Costa Rican tang that you brought.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:21] Adam: I didn’t.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:22] Adam: Natalie brought those.
[0:35:22 – 0:35:23] Adam: And shout out to Natalie.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:24] Adam: We’ll get to that later.
[0:35:25 – 0:35:27] Adam: We have Costa Rican tang.
[0:35:27 – 0:35:28] Adam: We’re multinational.
[0:35:29 – 0:35:30] Adam: We’re in the food.
[0:35:31 – 0:35:32] Adam: Got the rollie.
[0:35:32 – 0:35:38] Erik: There’s two knives, two spoons, obviously, two forks, and a…
[0:35:38 – 0:35:39] Adam: I’ve never used one of these before.
[0:35:39 – 0:35:42] Erik: Yeah, you’re really… Hey, there it is.
[0:35:42 – 0:35:45] Erik: There’s a ladle and a little fillet knife for all those…
[0:35:46 – 0:35:47] Erik: I don’t have any idea.
[0:35:47 – 0:35:48] Erik: Metal.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:48] Erik: It’s made of metal.
[0:35:48 – 0:35:49] Erik: It’s a metal one.
[0:35:49 – 0:35:54] Erik: Probably some Coghlan’s subsidiary.
[0:35:55 – 0:35:55] Adam: All right.
[0:35:57 – 0:35:58] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:35:58 – 0:35:59] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:35:59 – 0:36:00] Adam: Look at that.
[0:36:00 – 0:36:00] Adam: Oh, man.
[0:36:05 – 0:36:07] Adam: This old thing’s been around a while.
[0:36:07 – 0:36:08] Adam: This bag is older than me.
[0:36:09 – 0:36:12] Adam: And let’s just bring her out.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:16] Adam: So, yeah, we decided we’re going to bring just the lid of the cast iron set.
[0:36:16 – 0:36:18] Adam: We’re not bringing the whole Dutch oven.
[0:36:18 – 0:36:24] Adam: I have a special bag for it just because this thing is filthy and it gets filthy.
[0:36:26 – 0:36:29] Adam: Um, it’s not even really that clean.
[0:36:29 – 0:36:31] Adam: Let’s be honest, but we’re going on a camping trip.
[0:36:31 – 0:36:31] Adam: Who cares?
[0:36:32 – 0:36:34] Adam: I literally just cooked something in this the other day.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:37] Erik: That spatula is like…
[0:36:37 – 0:36:37] Adam: It’s a 12-inch.
[0:36:38 – 0:36:39] Adam: It’s the lid from a set.
[0:36:39 – 0:36:42] Adam: It’s a Cabela’s 12-inch cast-iron skillet.
[0:36:43 – 0:36:46] Adam: This has been on almost as many trips as Eric’s loon shirt.
[0:36:47 – 0:36:49] Adam: It’s a real workhorse for us.
[0:36:49 – 0:36:52] Adam: We’re going to have many meals in here on this trip.
[0:36:53 – 0:36:56] Adam: I’m looking forward to the frittata breakfast on Sunday morning in here.
[0:36:56 – 0:36:57] Adam: Ah, yes.
[0:36:57 – 0:36:59] Adam: We’re going to fry eggs in it tomorrow morning.
[0:36:59 – 0:37:01] Adam: It’s going to pretty much do every meal for us.
[0:37:01 – 0:37:02] Adam: We can fry fish in it.
[0:37:03 – 0:37:04] Adam: It’s a little heavy.
[0:37:04 – 0:37:05] Adam: Yeah, it’s a little heavy.
[0:37:05 – 0:37:06] Adam: It is cast iron.
[0:37:06 – 0:37:09] Adam: Just the lid maybe is 12 pounds, 10 pounds.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:10] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:37:10 – 0:37:10] Adam: It’s heavy.
[0:37:11 – 0:37:11] Erik: 10 maybe, yeah.
[0:37:11 – 0:37:13] Erik: But that bottom section is like.
[0:37:14 – 0:37:15] Adam: So the full set’s ridiculous.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:17] Adam: It also fits in that bag if we want the whole set.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:20] Adam: But just with the mileage we’re trying to do on that.
[0:37:21 – 0:37:23] Adam: Not going to be feasible for this trip.
[0:37:23 – 0:37:26] Adam: So that’s plenty for what we need to do for two people.
[0:37:26 – 0:37:28] Adam: Just the lid, it’s really handy to have.
[0:37:29 – 0:37:36] Adam: When we do the campsite review later, we will note that the fire grate here is really looking good, and we can do all sorts of things just on that as needed.
[0:37:37 – 0:37:39] Adam: This thing really has a place in my heart.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:40] Adam: It’s my Russell.
[0:37:41 – 0:37:42] Adam: Can we get a video of the spin here?
[0:37:42 – 0:37:44] Erik: I’ve got to get back there.
[0:37:44 – 0:37:45] Erik: Wow.
[0:37:45 – 0:37:45] Adam: Hold on.
[0:37:46 – 0:37:46] Erik: In the light.
[0:37:47 – 0:37:48] Adam: Look at that.
[0:37:48 – 0:37:48] Adam: Can you maybe…
[0:37:50 – 0:37:51] Adam: Look at this.
[0:37:52 – 0:37:54] Adam: It’s a Russell 2386H6.
[0:37:54 – 0:37:58] Adam: Oh, the 2300 series.
[0:37:58 – 0:38:00] Adam: Yeah, it’s a 2300 Russell.
[0:38:01 – 0:38:02] Adam: I think somebody else bought them out.
[0:38:02 – 0:38:04] Adam: Now, you can buy these new.
[0:38:04 – 0:38:05] Adam: It’s a pancake flipper.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:07] Adam: It’s a…
[0:38:08 – 0:38:11] Adam: I guess it’s a five or a six-inch pancake flipper from Russell.
[0:38:12 – 0:38:15] Adam: I think it’s Russell Webster now is the name of the company.
[0:38:15 – 0:38:19] Adam: But you can see, like, the seasoning on his handle.
[0:38:19 – 0:38:20] Adam: Yes.
[0:38:20 – 0:38:21] Adam: It’s been on a few trips, folks.
[0:38:22 – 0:38:33] Adam: And we pillaged this from an old, like, CCC camp or something on the Mekan River in Wisconsin, back down where I used to trout fish a bunch.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:34] Adam: There’s this old camp.
[0:38:35 – 0:38:37] Adam: And, man, it’s perfectly weighted.
[0:38:38 – 0:38:46] Adam: As somebody who’s done a lot of breakfast cooking, both in my life and as a professional, honestly, it’s the finest spatula slash pancake flipper I’ve ever found.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:48] Adam: You’ve got to get one of these.
[0:38:48 – 0:38:50] Adam: If you ever find something this sturdy, go ahead and get it.
[0:38:50 – 0:38:52] Adam: I wish I knew what kind of wood this was.
[0:38:53 – 0:38:58] Adam: I’m sure we’d do a little research and find out, but really, really nice piece of equipment.
[0:38:58 – 0:39:00] Adam: The thing is just incredible.
[0:39:00 – 0:39:01] Adam: Should go one more flip.
[0:39:01 – 0:39:02] Adam: I can see if I can get it spinning.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:04] Erik: Ooh.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:05] Erik: I think we got that.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:06] Erik: All right.
[0:39:06 – 0:39:07] Adam: Moving on.
[0:39:07 – 0:39:08] Adam: We’re out of the cook kit.
[0:39:08 – 0:39:08] Adam: All right.
[0:39:08 – 0:39:09] Adam: Ooh, another water filter.
[0:39:10 – 0:39:13] Adam: This is an MSR gravity filter system, five liters.
[0:39:14 – 0:39:15] Adam: Really nice when you’re in camp.
[0:39:15 – 0:39:19] Adam: Obviously, the hand pump is all you really need.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:25] Adam: I like that the bag they gave me for this thing is actually big enough to hold the thing.
[0:39:25 – 0:39:28] Adam: It’s funny how some places don’t consider…
[0:39:29 – 0:39:30] Adam: Let’s just pull it out of here.
[0:39:30 – 0:39:31] Adam: We’re going to need it anyways.
[0:39:32 – 0:39:34] Erik: Yeah, it’s been a spell since I’ve had any fresh water.
[0:39:34 – 0:39:36] Adam: Could use a drink other than white wine.
[0:39:37 – 0:39:37] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:39:39 – 0:39:41] Adam: So you kind of roll it up and it’s…
[0:39:45 – 0:39:45] Adam: Woo!
[0:39:47 – 0:39:49] Adam: The trees.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:51] Adam: So yeah, you just go down, you dip it.
[0:39:53 – 0:39:56] Adam: Hang it in a tree and let the little filter here do its job.
[0:39:56 – 0:39:57] Adam: This is the second filter I’ve had on it.
[0:39:57 – 0:39:59] Adam: Make sure the flow is going the right way.
[0:40:00 – 0:40:03] Erik: There is a large arrow indicating the flow direction.
[0:40:03 – 0:40:03] Adam: You can’t mess it up.
[0:40:04 – 0:40:05] Adam: And then just don’t lose the cap.
[0:40:06 – 0:40:06] Adam: No.
[0:40:06 – 0:40:07] Adam: Easy peasy.
[0:40:07 – 0:40:09] Adam: And rinse it out when you get home.
[0:40:10 – 0:40:12] Adam: So these are really nice.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:13] Adam: Really a game changer.
[0:40:14 – 0:40:20] Adam: Who wants to go down to the waterfront and kind of hunch and squat and pump at the end of a long day?
[0:40:20 – 0:40:22] Adam: Just go and fill this sucker up.
[0:40:22 – 0:40:24] Adam: You can set your water bottle to it.
[0:40:24 – 0:40:26] Adam: Go take care of some other camp chores.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:27] Adam: You come back, you got a full water bottle.
[0:40:28 – 0:40:29] Adam: Doesn’t matter what kind of lake you’re on.
[0:40:29 – 0:40:30] Adam: These things are amazing.
[0:40:30 – 0:40:31] Adam: Highly recommended.
[0:40:34 – 0:40:36] Adam: All right, you want to take a turn at pulling?
[0:40:37 – 0:40:37] Adam: Sure.
[0:40:37 – 0:40:39] Adam: All right, let’s change the camera over here.
[0:40:40 – 0:40:42] Adam: We’re about halfway through the pack here.
[0:40:42 – 0:40:51] Erik: We might get a battery change here in a second, but obviously the smaller version makes my chair the Helinox chair.
[0:40:51 – 0:40:53] Erik: Regular Helinox.
[0:40:53 – 0:40:58] Erik: Regular Helinox compared to yours look like a toy, but it’s the same chair.
[0:40:58 – 0:40:59] Erik: Same chair.
[0:40:59 – 0:41:00] Adam: Very nice chairs, though.
[0:41:00 – 0:41:02] Adam: Can’t say enough about the Helinox.
[0:41:02 – 0:41:04] Adam: We both have one for a good reason.
[0:41:04 – 0:41:05] Erik: Oh, look at that.
[0:41:05 – 0:41:07] Erik: It’s a cleaning kit.
[0:41:07 – 0:41:13] Erik: I couldn’t find the big, like, welding gloves, so I just had to grab a regular old hot pad mitt.
[0:41:13 – 0:41:14] Adam: Oh, I was going to ask.
[0:41:14 – 0:41:18] Adam: I figured you had the welding glove packed, but I didn’t bring a hot mitt.
[0:41:19 – 0:41:22] Erik: I think they’re, like, in the wood stove for the wall tent.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:22] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:41:22 – 0:41:24] Adam: Oh, that’s where they are for sure.
[0:41:24 – 0:41:29] Erik: Yeah, but we’ve got a hot mitt nonetheless and a little scrub pad and some camp soap.
[0:41:31 – 0:41:31] Adam: Okay.
[0:41:33 – 0:41:36] Erik: Three rolls of TP for wiping our butts.
[0:41:36 – 0:41:37] Erik: One for each.
[0:41:39 – 0:41:40] Erik: One for each day.
[0:41:41 – 0:41:41] Adam: One for each day, yeah.
[0:41:42 – 0:41:45] Adam: I was going to say it’s one for us, one for you, one for me, and then one for the canoe.
[0:41:47 – 0:41:48] Erik: Oh, look at this thing.
[0:41:48 – 0:41:53] Erik: I’ve disparaged these in the past, but I also didn’t want to bring the full axe.
[0:41:54 – 0:42:13] Erik: So I’ve got a shin splitter, and it’s a Gerber little handheld hatchet, which, again, I don’t necessarily condone using, but I didn’t want to bring out the full Gransford Brux Axe maul that I have.
[0:42:13 – 0:42:14] Erik: That thing’s heavy.
[0:42:14 – 0:42:36] Adam: yeah and honestly just go for smaller wood you don’t need to be going for the nine nine inch diameter wood we’re not yeah we’re not preparing for winter out here yeah it’s pretty nice we don’t need anything more than small small dead branch oh yeah svenspan svensa you know this sound if you’ve ever dealt with a svensa
[0:42:37 – 0:42:39] Erik: That just brings you out to a campsite, doesn’t it?
[0:42:40 – 0:42:41] Erik: It’s got the wing nut.
[0:42:41 – 0:42:42] Erik: This thing’s brand new.
[0:42:42 – 0:42:47] Erik: You can still feel the oil on the blade from Duluth, Minnesota.
[0:42:48 – 0:42:50] Adam: By Swen Products.
[0:42:50 – 0:42:51] Adam: Very nice.
[0:42:53 – 0:42:54] Erik: This, I believe, is your rain fly?
[0:42:54 – 0:42:55] Adam: It is.
[0:42:55 – 0:42:56] Adam: That’s my CCS.
[0:42:57 – 0:43:04] Adam: It’s a 10×10, and got a bunch of P-cord attached to all the corners and sides, so real easy setup.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:08] Adam: I believe I will not be setting it up tonight.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:13] Adam: It’s a 0% chance of rain, so that means it’ll probably rain, but I’m still not going to set it up.
[0:43:13 – 0:43:13] Erik: Right.
[0:43:14 – 0:43:16] Adam: Just bringing that along for the last couple days of the trip.
[0:43:16 – 0:43:17] Adam: It looks like we may get some.
[0:43:18 – 0:43:19] Adam: That’s a nice one.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:20] Adam: Fits perfect over the hammock.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:25] Erik: So I also have the Sea to Summit compression bag.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:33] Erik: And if you guys promise not to say anything, I’m going to show you what bag it is.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:35] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:36] Erik: It’s a secret.
[0:43:36 – 0:43:37] Erik: Top secret.
[0:43:37 – 0:43:38] Adam: Don’t say.
[0:43:38 – 0:43:39] Erik: Don’t tell Tori.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:43] Adam: No, you took our Seahawks bag.
[0:43:44 – 0:43:45] Adam: Gross.
[0:43:45 – 0:43:45] Adam: Gross.
[0:43:47 – 0:43:50] Adam: This is Russell Wilson’s actual skin.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:52] Adam: Made it from Russell Wilson.
[0:43:52 – 0:44:01] Erik: So this is a Sierra Designs Zissou High, rated to zero.
[0:44:01 – 0:44:07] Erik: It’s a dry down, like synthetic down, so you can kind of get it wet and you’re not completely up a creek.
[0:44:08 – 0:44:12] Adam: It’s a much nicer sleeping bag than I’m currently packing, for sure.
[0:44:12 – 0:44:14] Erik: But, yes, this is Tori’s sleeping bag.
[0:44:15 – 0:44:18] Erik: The jealous wife is listening right now and probably… What?
[0:44:19 – 0:44:19] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:21] Adam: I’m going to get it all stinky.
[0:44:21 – 0:44:21] Adam: I’m sorry.
[0:44:22 – 0:44:23] Adam: I can verify.
[0:44:23 – 0:44:26] Adam: He stinks like a real dirty butt today.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:29] Erik: I had a Reuben from Poplar House last night.
[0:44:29 – 0:44:30] Adam: Oh, my God.
[0:44:30 – 0:44:33] Adam: Something’s wrong with your insides today, for sure.
[0:44:33 – 0:44:34] Adam: I’m glad I’ve been in the front of the canoe.
[0:44:35 – 0:44:42] Erik: The main reason I wanted to bring this one is because my negative 20 North Face bag is, like, very heavy.
[0:44:42 – 0:44:44] Erik: And I was just, like, comparing the two.
[0:44:44 – 0:44:45] Erik: I’m like, ah.
[0:44:45 – 0:44:46] Erik: And it’s super bulky.
[0:44:47 – 0:44:49] Erik: And, like, a negative 20 bag is kind of insane.
[0:44:50 – 0:44:51] Adam: It’s a little overkill for this.
[0:44:51 – 0:44:52] Adam: This is June now.
[0:44:52 – 0:44:54] Erik: But I do sleep cold.
[0:44:54 – 0:44:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:56 – 0:44:58] Adam: That’s to be, you know, in a hammock, too.
[0:44:58 – 0:45:02] Adam: You got to kind of sleep and bag up a little bit if you’re going to be in the hammock, for sure.
[0:45:03 – 0:45:04] Adam: Another Sea to Summit.
[0:45:04 – 0:45:12] Erik: Another Sea to Summit bag with socks, underwear, and not as many fun drugs as Adam.
[0:45:13 – 0:45:13] Adam: Too bad.
[0:45:13 – 0:45:15] Adam: We can’t all have the horse pills.
[0:45:15 – 0:45:19] Erik: I’ve got some Tums and some poop pills in the form of psyllium husk.
[0:45:20 – 0:45:21] Adam: Wow, we’re set.
[0:45:21 – 0:45:23] Adam: I mean, no matter what happens out here, we’re going to be healthy.
[0:45:25 – 0:45:27] Adam: Getting to the bottom of the pack here.
[0:45:27 – 0:45:30] Adam: Oh, that’s my hammock bug net.
[0:45:33 – 0:45:36] Adam: Super important to have one of these in June.
[0:45:36 – 0:45:38] Adam: I’ve been on some trips where I didn’t have them.
[0:45:39 – 0:45:40] Adam: Really regretted it.
[0:45:40 – 0:45:46] Adam: And so I used it on the trip to Din Din last year, and it came in really handy.
[0:45:46 – 0:45:48] Adam: We had a lot of mosquitoes on that trip.
[0:45:48 – 0:45:53] Adam: I think we’re going to be dealing more with the black flies here, and who knows.
[0:45:53 – 0:45:55] Adam: But it’s good to have just in case.
[0:45:55 – 0:45:58] Adam: It weighs almost nothing and really packs into the ink corner of the pack you need.
[0:45:59 – 0:46:00] Erik: Yeah.
[0:46:00 – 0:46:09] Erik: So you don’t do this, but I bring a Therm-a-Rest slash sleeping pad to put in my hammock for added warmth and spreads the edges of the hammock out a little bit.
[0:46:09 – 0:46:15] Erik: And I like Sea to Summit for everything that they do, except like if you’re listening down in Perth.
[0:46:15 – 0:46:21] Erik: you should make a larger stuff sack because this thing is like hydraulically pressed into this stuff sack.
[0:46:21 – 0:46:24] Adam: Yeah, once you take it out, it’s never going back.
[0:46:24 – 0:46:27] Erik: This is the closest I’ve ever gotten to actually getting it all the way back in.
[0:46:28 – 0:46:34] Erik: Most of the ones that I send out in outfitting, when they come back, I just have to start sending out with P-cord tighter on it because you can’t get them back in.
[0:46:34 – 0:46:34] Adam: Sure.
[0:46:35 – 0:46:35] Erik: Especially in the field.
[0:46:35 – 0:46:39] Erik: If you’ve got a flat table to work with, they can sometimes get back in.
[0:46:39 – 0:46:41] Erik: This one’s like 90% of the way back in.
[0:46:42 – 0:46:43] Adam: Yeah, it’s almost vacuum sealed in there.
[0:46:44 – 0:46:44] Adam: Yeah.
[0:46:44 – 0:46:49] Adam: We do have some nice flat rocks in this campsite, though, so maybe you can do a job on it tomorrow.
[0:46:49 – 0:46:53] Erik: Yeah, so it’s Sea to Summit Comfort Light, self-inflating.
[0:46:54 – 0:46:54] Adam: Oh, boy.
[0:46:54 – 0:46:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:46:55 – 0:46:55] Adam: Real nice.
[0:46:57 – 0:46:57] UNKNOWN: Getting down there.
[0:46:59 – 0:47:01] Erik: Oh, I’ve got my Marty McFly vest.
[0:47:01 – 0:47:02] Erik: I can’t wait to put it on.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:03] Erik: Wow.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:09] Adam: So this is just a straight-up stuff sack, and on top is my pillow slash layer, which is a…
[0:47:10 – 0:47:12] Erik: I mean, I’m going to say probably the…
[0:47:13 – 0:47:38] Erik: dopest piece of equipment that i own it really is nice this is a uh vintage north face down vest that i found it made in the usa back when they used to make it in the united states found it at a that’s really nice it is literally the uh the marty mcfly vest yeah a friend of mine nate wore this for a halloween costume when he went as marty mcfly yeah i could see it it really fits
[0:47:38 – 0:47:43] Erik: It’s great for around the campfire at night, and then you just roll it up and throw it in as a pillow.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:44] Adam: Absolutely, yeah.
[0:47:44 – 0:47:46] Adam: It goes with your color scheme, too.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:46] Adam: Nicely done.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:56] Erik: Yeah, so that’s on top of my kind of, like, basically what I would call, like, the tent bag, which is a bug net to go along with my hammock.
[0:47:57 – 0:47:59] Erik: That’s a Eno Guardian bug net.
[0:48:00 – 0:48:01] Adam: I think that’s the same one I got.
[0:48:01 – 0:48:05] Erik: I don’t know why yours doesn’t say that it’s a Guardian bug net.
[0:48:05 – 0:48:06] Adam: They ripped that label off.
[0:48:06 – 0:48:07] Erik: Probably.
[0:48:07 – 0:48:13] Erik: They got a Pro Fly XL, also by Eno, specifically designed for the hammock.
[0:48:13 – 0:48:17] Adam: Yeah, that one fits a little nicer than the old 10×10, but gets the job done.
[0:48:18 – 0:48:18] Erik: I’m excited to…
[0:48:20 – 0:48:26] Erik: display this Eno Double Nest Leave No Trace style.
[0:48:27 – 0:48:29] Erik: I have not actually opened this up yet.
[0:48:29 – 0:48:32] Erik: I’ll be interested to see if it says like Leave No Trace on the hammock itself.
[0:48:33 – 0:48:36] Erik: And it comes with some Atlas suspension straps.
[0:48:36 – 0:48:36] Adam: Nice.
[0:48:37 – 0:48:44] Erik: And then on the bottom is a large selection of P-cord, stakes, and
[0:48:46 – 0:48:50] Erik: Clearwater Historic Lodge and Canoe Outfitters playing cards.
[0:48:50 – 0:48:50] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:48:51 – 0:48:51] Adam: Yeah.
[0:48:52 – 0:48:53] Adam: Play a little gin rummy later.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:54] Adam: Yeah, right?
[0:48:55 – 0:49:02] Erik: That’s everything that’s in the bag except for… Oh, yeah.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:02] Erik: Chacos.
[0:49:04 – 0:49:07] Erik: That were pressure washed yesterday down at the waterfront.
[0:49:07 – 0:49:14] Erik: So I got, there was like a half inch grease ball in the middle that had formed because I’d been wearing them for like a week straight and mud and stuff.
[0:49:14 – 0:49:15] Erik: Yeah, yeah.
[0:49:15 – 0:49:17] Erik: So they’re pressure washed and actually still wet.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:21] Adam: And then you got to have some duct tape.
[0:49:21 – 0:49:21] Erik: Got to have the duct tape.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:25] Erik: And here, oh God, those smell terrible.
[0:49:25 – 0:49:27] Adam: Yeah, they should make those from bamboo, honestly.
[0:49:27 – 0:49:28] Adam: That’d be way better.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:32] Adam: So that is what’s in the pack.
[0:49:33 – 0:49:36] Erik: That’s what’s in the pack, and the battery on the video is dying.
[0:49:38 – 0:49:39] Adam: We didn’t get to our paddles, though.
[0:49:39 – 0:49:50] Erik: No, we can stop, get a new battery, and do the paddles, and then my tackle box, and maybe just show you what the top of the food bag looks like.
[0:49:50 – 0:49:50] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:49:51 – 0:49:55] Erik: We can maybe involve that more in just the trip report episodes.
[0:49:55 – 0:49:56] Adam: Yeah, I think so.
[0:49:56 – 0:49:59] Adam: We’ll just give people an idea of what we have for a food pack, too.
[0:49:59 – 0:50:01] Adam: All right, we’ll be back in just a minute.
[0:50:11 – 0:50:17] Adam: Okay, this is part three of the in the bag, in the field episode.
[0:50:18 – 0:50:25] Erik: There’s so many things to do with the in the bag, like half in the bag, all the way in the bag.
[0:50:25 – 0:50:28] Erik: So we have some fun options for an episode title.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:28] Adam: We sure do.
[0:50:29 – 0:50:40] Erik: So this isn’t necessarily in the bag, but I think it is appropriate that we show you and talk about the implements of our success strategy.
[0:50:40 – 0:50:43] Adam: Yeah, M1, we have the M1, Min 2, Kevlar boat.
[0:50:44 – 0:50:46] Adam: Down over there, just show the marina.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:47] Erik: Here he goes!
[0:50:51 – 0:50:52] Adam: In the camp.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:54] Adam: Oh, God, the pollen.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:56] Erik: We can talk about the yellow gunk.
[0:50:56 – 0:50:57] Erik: What the hell is going on with this pollen?
[0:50:57 – 0:50:59] Adam: See that gunk down there?
[0:50:59 – 0:51:02] Adam: Yeah, there’s like a stream of it coming around this island over here.
[0:51:04 – 0:51:05] Erik: The pollen is really bad right now.
[0:51:05 – 0:51:05] Erik: Yes.
[0:51:06 – 0:51:10] Erik: So you can’t really even see it from here, but it’s a Minnesota 2, famous M1 boat.
[0:51:10 – 0:51:11] Erik: We’ve talked about it before.
[0:51:11 – 0:51:14] Adam: We take it on almost every trip if we can.
[0:51:15 – 0:51:20] Adam: It’s a real fine boat, and no complaints on that boat.
[0:51:21 – 0:51:22] Adam: It’s just a rock star.
[0:51:23 – 0:51:27] Adam: So moving back into camp here, we’re going to go over our paddles.
[0:51:30 – 0:51:30] Erik: We’ve got a couple of beauties.
[0:51:32 – 0:51:36] Adam: This here is my Zavril.
[0:51:37 – 0:51:39] Adam: I believe it’s a 48.
[0:51:39 – 0:51:43] Adam: It weighs about 12 ounces.
[0:51:44 – 0:51:46] Adam: It’s all carbon fiber.
[0:51:47 – 0:51:50] Adam: I bought this in town at Stone Harbor.
[0:51:50 – 0:51:52] Adam: They don’t carry them anymore.
[0:51:52 – 0:51:57] Adam: I’m not sure if Zavril is still making them, but this is a hell of a paddle.
[0:51:57 – 0:51:58] Adam: I’ve had a lot of miles on here.
[0:51:58 – 0:52:01] Adam: I wish we had some sort of stroke counter on it.
[0:52:02 – 0:52:03] Erik: Oh, that would be like a pedometer.
[0:52:03 – 0:52:04] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:11] Adam: Like how many, I mean, I’ve had this since 2012, 2013.
[0:52:11 – 0:52:13] Adam: I bought it kind of right when I moved back up here.
[0:52:13 – 0:52:17] Adam: So got a beautiful GoFamily Farms sticker on here.
[0:52:18 – 0:52:19] Adam: Somehow it’s hung on.
[0:52:19 – 0:52:20] Adam: I can’t believe that sticker’s still on there.
[0:52:21 – 0:52:22] Adam: It’s in amazing shape.
[0:52:22 – 0:52:23] Adam: It’s on the push side too.
[0:52:23 – 0:52:26] Adam: Like I was just ridiculous hauling that and it’s still nice and bright green.
[0:52:26 – 0:52:27] Adam: Yeah.
[0:52:27 – 0:52:28] Erik: Hasn’t faded at all.
[0:52:28 – 0:52:29] Erik: The paddle looks like it’s faded more than the sticker.
[0:52:31 – 0:52:35] Adam: Yeah, this thing, if you can find one, I highly recommend it.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:38] Adam: It’s, like, guaranteed for life, too.
[0:52:38 – 0:52:44] Adam: I don’t know if the companies are not around anymore, who’s going to honor that, but I’ve never had any issues with it, not one.
[0:52:44 – 0:52:46] Erik: Are they related in any way to the bar in Ely?
[0:52:47 – 0:52:47] Adam: Maybe.
[0:52:48 – 0:52:48] Erik: Zavarl?
[0:52:48 – 0:52:49] Erik: Oh, that’s Zavarls.
[0:52:49 – 0:52:50] Adam: Zavarls.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:51] Adam: Maybe that’s how you’re supposed to say it.
[0:52:52 – 0:52:53] Erik: Isn’t that Zavaral?
[0:52:53 – 0:52:54] Erik: Zavaral, yeah.
[0:52:54 – 0:52:56] Erik: It’s supposed to be a racing pedal, but…
[0:52:57 – 0:52:59] Adam: Jesus, this thing, it’s just amazing.
[0:52:59 – 0:53:03] Adam: It glides in your hand and you never feel it.
[0:53:03 – 0:53:15] Adam: I mean, my elbow is a little sore right now just because first trip of the year, but you can paddle this thing all day on like a number four level of power, hell, even a five or a six.
[0:53:16 – 0:53:17] Adam: You can really give it, too.
[0:53:17 – 0:53:20] Adam: If you really got to go, this thing’s got some serious juice, so…
[0:53:21 – 0:53:47] Adam: i love it i you know i was just paddling like plastic crap paddles my whole life and then i finally got like an old like kind of beaver tail style wooden paddle that i took on our aquatico trip that i had like drawn a lake trout on yeah and that was a nice one but it literally weighed four times what this paddle weighs it was a little bit longer i don’t know everybody says you know there’s sizing techniques you can see it comes up
[0:53:49 – 0:53:52] Adam: Not even about the base of the sternum.
[0:53:53 – 0:53:55] Adam: I think you’re supposed to get it, like, up in your armpit.
[0:53:55 – 0:54:01] Erik: I think you’re supposed to sit down, put it in between your legs, and the bend is supposed to come between your eyes.
[0:54:01 – 0:54:04] Adam: Well, either way, any way you measure it, this thing’s too short for me.
[0:54:05 – 0:54:06] Adam: But I love it no matter what.
[0:54:06 – 0:54:12] Adam: I mean, I sit in the front seat on our trips most of the time, and if I’m paddling with Natalie, I’m in the back.
[0:54:12 – 0:54:16] Adam: But either way, I tend to just, like, have a lower, like…
[0:54:17 – 0:54:20] Adam: uh, arm swing or I don’t know what it is, but this is the size for me.
[0:54:21 – 0:54:25] Adam: And so don’t let anybody tell you otherwise, when you’re sizing up a paddle, like take it out and paddle.
[0:54:26 – 0:54:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:54:26 – 0:54:32] Adam: And I’ve always enjoyed, like, there’s a slightly long, like shorter paddle than I should for my height.
[0:54:32 – 0:54:36] Adam: Cause I have a pretty good wingspan and I’m six, six, three.
[0:54:36 – 0:54:40] Adam: So I’m, you know, I should be probably paddling a 52 or a 54 and this is a 48.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:40] Adam: So.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:44] Erik: I am not 6’3″.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:46] Erik: I’m just on a rock right now, and Adam’s in a low spot.
[0:54:46 – 0:54:49] Erik: So for the video watchers, we look like we’re the same height right now.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:50] Adam: We are.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:51] Adam: We’re the same person.
[0:54:52 – 0:54:53] Adam: So that’s my paddle.
[0:54:54 – 0:54:55] Adam: Can’t say enough about it.
[0:54:55 – 0:54:58] Adam: It’s not really in the pack, but I wanted to get it on the video.
[0:54:58 – 0:55:07] Adam: This thing is one of my prized possessions, and every trip I’ve been on since I bought it, it’s come with me and never let me down.
[0:55:07 – 0:55:11] Adam: This thing’s a real champ, and I highly recommend it if you can find one.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:13] Adam: Either way, though, 12 ounces.
[0:55:13 – 0:55:14] Adam: You can really go a long way with that thing.
[0:55:14 – 0:55:15] Erik: Can’t beat that.
[0:55:15 – 0:55:18] Adam: Yours is a little heavier, but it’s got a lot of art to it.
[0:55:18 – 0:55:20] Erik: Yeah, you’re not going to be able to find one of these.
[0:55:20 – 0:55:24] Erik: This was made by a friend of the show and I think listener?
[0:55:24 – 0:55:25] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:55:25 – 0:55:25] Erik: Let me know.
[0:55:25 – 0:55:26] Erik: Are you listening, Paige?
[0:55:27 – 0:55:27] Erik: Are you out there?
[0:55:28 – 0:55:28] Erik: Ed, hello.
[0:55:29 – 0:55:29] Erik: How are you doing?
[0:55:30 – 0:55:34] Erik: Yeah, so we did a trip, I don’t know, seven years ago now?
[0:55:36 – 0:55:37] Erik: Five, six years ago?
[0:55:37 – 0:55:44] Erik: The last big Quetico trip that I did with Tori, her sister, and Paige.
[0:55:46 – 0:55:51] Erik: And in advance of that trip, he made me and Tori paddles as wedding gifts.
[0:55:52 – 0:55:54] Erik: And so this is a handmade paddle.
[0:55:55 – 0:55:57] Erik: And it’s kind of got like a guitar-shaped blade.
[0:55:57 – 0:56:00] Adam: Yeah, it’s an unusual shape.
[0:56:00 – 0:56:05] Adam: I just like the way that this like top ridge kind of comes off of it.
[0:56:05 – 0:56:05] Erik: Mm-hmm.
[0:56:06 – 0:56:08] Adam: You could flip some pancakes with that thing for sure.
[0:56:09 – 0:56:12] Adam: I like the inlaid designs too.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:13] Adam: For one, you got an agate up top.
[0:56:14 – 0:56:20] Erik: Yeah, so in the handle, there’s like a drilled out hole, and he put an agate in it and then filled it back in with epoxy.
[0:56:20 – 0:56:24] Erik: So it’s got like that chakra thing going on.
[0:56:24 – 0:56:25] Adam: You have a real power spot there.
[0:56:26 – 0:56:30] Erik: Yeah, and then on the back of the blade, he…
[0:56:30 – 0:56:31] Erik: It’s a legit maple leaf.
[0:56:32 – 0:56:44] Erik: Managed to get a maple leaf in primo red as it was turning colors, and it is still preserved in the shellac, the same red as the day that it came off the tree.
[0:56:44 – 0:56:46] Adam: Have you had to re-shellac this at all?
[0:56:47 – 0:56:49] Adam: I mean, it’s still smooth to the touch.
[0:56:50 – 0:56:53] Adam: I mean, you got a little tip damage, which is to be expected from a paddle that age, but…
[0:56:54 – 0:57:05] Erik: Well, see, the thing is that this paddle was in mint condition until the second to the last day of our Quetico trip, and we had to break through ice to get out.
[0:57:05 – 0:57:06] Adam: Oh, no.
[0:57:06 – 0:57:08] Erik: So that’s why my… That’s what the damage is.
[0:57:08 – 0:57:19] Erik: Yeah, I got this for the Quetico trip, and almost the entire rock guard tip is now worn off, and the edges are a little, you can see there, worn down to the wood.
[0:57:20 – 0:57:22] Erik: Just from that day of breaking through the ice.
[0:57:22 – 0:57:28] Erik: So I saw it and I was like, for what we’re doing on this trip, cause I kind of had it in retirement a little bit.
[0:57:28 – 0:57:29] Erik: Cause I’m like, I just kind of get it refinished.
[0:57:30 – 0:57:32] Erik: I don’t want to paddle with it regularly.
[0:57:32 – 0:57:33] Erik: Otherwise it’s just going to get rotten.
[0:57:34 – 0:57:37] Erik: So I figured it’d be a good time to bring it out and.
[0:57:37 – 0:57:44] Erik: And then it’s a good reminder to get that rock tip refinished and clean it up a little bit.
[0:57:44 – 0:57:45] Erik: But still a beautiful paddle.
[0:57:46 – 0:57:47] Erik: I love it.
[0:57:47 – 0:57:49] Erik: And it’s nice and sturdy.
[0:57:49 – 0:57:59] Erik: I don’t feel like some of the ones that you get now that are just kind of like the cheaper wooden bent shafts, they feel like that blade just seems like it wants to like crack.
[0:57:59 – 0:58:02] Erik: And it always like kind of breaks a little bit along the edge.
[0:58:02 – 0:58:03] Erik: Yeah.
[0:58:03 – 0:58:05] Erik: Like these little panels will come off sometimes.
[0:58:05 – 0:58:06] Erik: But this is like…
[0:58:07 – 0:58:28] Erik: that thing’s solid look at the shaft on this thing i mean that’s that’s beefy yeah yeah i don’t and even sometimes when you’re paddling with them you feel it like kind of bending this thing is like yeah it’s a little heavier but it’s still not terrible i think it’s still lighter than that massive beaver tail you had oh yeah no doubt it’s made out of like maple
[0:58:30 – 0:58:59] Adam: ash what’s the bat that uh kevin costner makes or whatever i think it’s ash uh wonder boy oh yeah the one that got struck by the tree that got struck by lightning yeah robert redford himself struck the tree with lightning and then made wonder boy yeah yeah so that’s the paddle situation i’m glad i got this back out on the water i forgot how much i like to paddle it so right on all right and then we’re gonna finally just wrap it up with our bear barrel uh
[0:59:00 – 0:59:04] Adam: And Eric’s got some other gear here he wants to go through.
[0:59:04 – 0:59:06] Erik: Oh, yeah, just a little random electronic bag.
[0:59:07 – 0:59:11] Erik: So we’ve got the GoPro that is right there.
[0:59:12 – 0:59:22] Erik: It’s super wide-angle, so I dropped the wide-angle lens because the wide-angle lens is like dense glass, very heavy, and just brought the zoom lens on the Canon D90.
[0:59:24 – 0:59:25] Adam: Did you have this in the food pack?
[0:59:25 – 0:59:27] Adam: Yeah, it was right on top of the food pack.
[0:59:27 – 0:59:31] Adam: Yeah, you usually have it in its own waterproof protective case.
[0:59:31 – 0:59:31] Adam: Yeah.
[0:59:31 – 0:59:36] Erik: But when you have a bear barrel… Yeah, it sits on the top of that in a waterproof case.
[0:59:36 – 0:59:39] Erik: And then if we’re on the water, it’s a little bit easier to get to.
[0:59:39 – 0:59:43] Erik: Because those Pelican cases to hold these things are like twice as heavy as the camera.
[0:59:43 – 0:59:46] Erik: I mean, they’re super sturdy and nice, but they’re heavy.
[0:59:48 – 1:00:00] Erik: So, and then I’ve got, this is a 35mm prime lens and a 55-200 zoom Canon D90 for, you know, a little bit more, I don’t know.
[1:00:01 – 1:00:04] Erik: The GoPro is fine for taking pictures, but you can’t do as much with it.
[1:00:05 – 1:00:11] Erik: And then just a headlamp and a little charging battery for the camera and camera.
[1:00:12 – 1:00:39] Erik: that video camera there so you because we’ve already burned through one apparently give a review of that gopro one of these days that’ll be in a future episode 20 minutes of recording and then it gets super hot gopro hey it is hot i just kissed it geez burn your lips all right well lastly we got blue and red are the themes here we just uh we know our brands yeah
[1:00:39 – 1:00:41] Adam: And we’re going to stick with it.
[1:00:41 – 1:00:44] Adam: You got a brand new, it looks like, red Nalgene.
[1:00:44 – 1:00:45] Erik: The sticker’s still on it, yeah.
[1:00:47 – 1:00:52] Erik: Classic Nalgene with the tiger mounting some kind of a rock promontory.
[1:00:52 – 1:00:53] Erik: Sure, sure.
[1:00:54 – 1:00:57] Erik: I’ve got an older Nalgene in blue, of course.
[1:00:57 – 1:00:59] Adam: I’ve got a Clearwater Historic Lodge.
[1:00:59 – 1:01:01] Adam: I’ve got a Vexilar sticker.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:04] Adam: I have a Tumble Home podcast sticker on there, of course.
[1:01:04 – 1:01:07] Adam: Season 2, that’s an old hot dog.
[1:01:07 – 1:01:10] Adam: I think it was actually a vegan hot dog sticker that I got from work.
[1:01:10 – 1:01:13] Adam: And then what’s the other one back there?
[1:01:14 – 1:01:23] Adam: Uh, Oh, I have an Appalachian trail from, uh, when brother and I were hiking the Appalachian trail, I was kind of looking, needed one to commemorate that.
[1:01:23 – 1:01:23] Adam: So,
[1:01:24 – 1:01:48] Adam: and then a custom ink.com t-shirt sticker that’s a fun little guy who knows yeah so the only other thing i was gonna look at is i know my tackle box is here we don’t do we just show them here we’ll just see we got a couple oh what’s that i don’t know it looks like 50 pizza biters maybe it’s a 50 pizza biter bag maybe it isn’t but uh i have my headlamp on the top we just kind of threw
[1:01:49 – 1:01:52] Adam: threw some random things on top of the barrel because it’s just good storage.
[1:01:53 – 1:01:55] Adam: Eric’s got a little bit more impressive of a tackle box.
[1:01:56 – 1:01:59] Adam: I’ll probably end up having to borrow a lure after I lose my three.
[1:02:00 – 1:02:01] Adam: What do we got in here?
[1:02:01 – 1:02:02] Erik: I have four.
[1:02:02 – 1:02:08] Erik: Well, I have three X-Wraps, two in cold steel, one in like classic blue and white.
[1:02:09 – 1:02:10] Erik: And then I think I found this one.
[1:02:11 – 1:02:14] Erik: It’s like a shadow wrap, deep, slow sinking kind of thing.
[1:02:14 – 1:02:15] Adam: Oh, baby.
[1:02:15 – 1:02:16] Adam: That’s nice.
[1:02:16 – 1:02:17] Erik: Yeah.
[1:02:17 – 1:02:18] Adam: We got a sparkle top on that thing.
[1:02:18 – 1:02:19] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[1:02:19 – 1:02:20] Erik: I guess I didn’t notice that.
[1:02:20 – 1:02:22] Erik: I found this like last summer.
[1:02:23 – 1:02:26] Adam: And it had three treble hooks on it, and I removed the middle one.
[1:02:26 – 1:02:28] Adam: I’m like, that’s an insane amount.
[1:02:28 – 1:02:28] Adam: Too many.
[1:02:28 – 1:02:31] Erik: And they’re all crimped, for what it’s worth.
[1:02:31 – 1:02:34] Erik: Mostly for myself.
[1:02:35 – 1:02:38] Erik: If I get hooked, it’s going to be an easy fish hook removal.
[1:02:39 – 1:02:45] Erik: And then I’ve got Mepps Cyclops II, a three-quarter ounce little Cleo, straight gold.
[1:02:45 – 1:02:47] Adam: Oh, that straight gold is hot, baby.
[1:02:47 – 1:02:48] Adam: That’s a big one.
