[0:02:25 – 0:02:26] Erik: Yeah, this week… And Jens.
[0:02:27 – 0:02:27] Erik: And Jens.
[0:02:27 – 0:02:38] Erik: I don’t know how many listeners we have from the Delphia, the Sylvania East region, but if you’re out there, Jens know who you are.
[0:02:38 – 0:02:39] Erik: Appreciate Jens.
[0:02:39 – 0:02:40] Erik: Appreciate Jens.
[0:02:41 – 0:02:45] Erik: Yeah, we’re talking tunes after this episode on the Patreon.
[0:02:45 – 0:02:50] Erik: Basically, the albums that got me by on my week plus…
[0:02:52 – 0:02:54] Erik: Just a little bit over a week on the road.
[0:02:54 – 0:02:56] Erik: Some of the albums that kept me going.
[0:02:58 – 0:03:00] Erik: And next week, the big one.
[0:03:01 – 0:03:02] Erik: Last of the Mohicans.
[0:03:04 – 0:03:05] Adam: I’m on the edge of my seat.
[0:03:06 – 0:03:07] Adam: Already?
[0:03:07 – 0:03:10] Adam: I haven’t seen this film in at least 15 years.
[0:03:10 – 0:03:11] Erik: I’ve never seen it.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:12] Erik: Wow.
[0:03:12 – 0:03:14] Erik: I can’t wait.
[0:03:15 – 0:03:16] Erik: Hardly wait.
[0:03:17 – 0:03:18] Adam: It’s going to be a banger.
[0:03:18 – 0:03:20] Adam: It’s for sure going to be a banger.
[0:03:20 – 0:03:33] Erik: Yeah, I mean, if you want to hear us talk about basically first-time experiences on Last of the Mohicans, which I believe has something to do with First Nations people and Daniel Day-Lewis.
[0:03:34 – 0:03:35] Adam: Daniel Day-Lewis is in there.
[0:03:36 – 0:03:37] Adam: I think he throws a…
[0:03:38 – 0:03:58] Adam: tomahawk just checks notes yeah one tomahawk is hurled right at the camera right at the waterfall that was yeah right at the camera that was taking the picture for the movie poster that camera has since been destroyed um but yes thank you patrons
[0:03:58 – 0:04:01] Adam: I’ll also be giving out my fantasy football rankings.
[0:04:01 – 0:04:04] Adam: Patreon’s only $5 a month.
[0:04:04 – 0:04:08] Adam: Gives you my premium access fantasy football rankings.
[0:04:08 – 0:04:10] Erik: Well, I’ll go ahead and leave the field mic for that one.
[0:04:10 – 0:04:12] Erik: You can do that on your own.
[0:04:12 – 0:04:16] Adam: I should start my own fantasy side podcast for free on Patreon.
[0:04:16 – 0:04:18] Adam: We won’t charge for that because it’s worthless.
[0:04:19 – 0:04:19] Adam: Just put it out.
[0:04:19 – 0:04:20] Erik: Yeah, you can put anything you want.
[0:04:21 – 0:04:25] Adam: I’ve won multiple fantasy championships in my 20 years of playing fantasy sport.
[0:04:26 – 0:04:28] Adam: And so I think I have a little something to say.
[0:04:28 – 0:04:28] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:04:29 – 0:04:33] Adam: There’s got to be at least 10 to 12 listeners out there of Tumble Home who also play fantasy sports.
[0:04:34 – 0:04:36] Adam: The Zen, it’s barely touching.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:38] Adam: But there’s a few of you out there.
[0:04:38 – 0:04:40] Erik: I’m sure that there’s more than you would think.
[0:04:40 – 0:04:42] Erik: I think I’m in the minority.
[0:04:42 – 0:04:46] Adam: I’ve always dreamed of having a fantasy sports podcast, so maybe I’ll start that up.
[0:04:46 – 0:04:47] Erik: No, don’t dream.
[0:04:47 – 0:04:50] Erik: See, you’ve got to dream bigger than everybody else.
[0:04:50 – 0:04:53] Erik: Everybody’s got a fantasy sports podcast.
[0:04:53 – 0:04:55] Erik: What’s your angle?
[0:04:55 – 0:04:56] Erik: Yeah, you’ve got to have an angle.
[0:04:57 – 0:05:00] Erik: See, the beauty of our podcast is there’s nobody else around, so we don’t have an angle.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:01] Adam: You don’t need one.
[0:05:01 – 0:05:02] Adam: We don’t need an angle.
[0:05:02 – 0:05:04] Adam: We just say whatever the heck we want.
[0:05:04 – 0:05:05] Adam: Nonsense.
[0:05:05 – 0:05:06] Adam: That’s not really an angle.
[0:05:06 – 0:05:07] Adam: Well, it is now.
[0:05:07 – 0:05:08] Adam: Because you don’t need an angle.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:11] Erik: It’s just a flat line here.
[0:05:12 – 0:05:13] Erik: No, it is not a flat line.
[0:05:13 – 0:05:19] Adam: Today is Ron’s share out to our calendar fact of the day for September 10th, 2021.
[0:05:20 – 0:05:22] Adam: Fall warblers are migrating.
[0:05:22 – 0:05:26] Adam: Sunset’s at 7.32 p.m. Aye, aye, aye.
[0:05:27 – 0:05:28] Adam: That’s right around the corner.
[0:05:29 – 0:05:34] Adam: Not going to get you a tumble home after dark tonight, unfortunately, but we are coming to you live from the tumble shed.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:35] Adam: Eric’s here.
[0:05:35 – 0:05:36] Adam: I’m here.
[0:05:36 – 0:05:39] Adam: Arrow the dog is here in their bed of straw.
[0:05:39 – 0:05:40] Erik: Hair of the dog.
[0:05:41 – 0:05:44] Adam: And we got a couple extra donations into the hopper today.
[0:05:44 – 0:05:48] Adam: I haven’t even been able to catalog them, but they are inbound.
[0:05:48 – 0:05:53] Adam: We did get an anonymous donation from Iowa in a red bag.
[0:05:53 – 0:05:53] Adam: Are you out there?
[0:05:54 – 0:05:54] Adam: Are you listening?
[0:05:55 – 0:05:55] Adam: No name.
[0:05:56 – 0:05:56] Adam: There’s no name.
[0:05:57 – 0:06:02] Adam: I wasn’t there to receive it personally, and they just left it on the front stoop.
[0:06:03 – 0:06:05] Adam: Actually, maybe this wasn’t a donation.
[0:06:06 – 0:06:13] Adam: Somebody just forgot their bag of beer on the front stoop because they just found beer and assumed it was for the podcast.
[0:06:13 – 0:06:19] Adam: Now, this is how the hardworking people at the co-op, they are good folks and they just gave us beer.
[0:06:19 – 0:06:24] Erik: Or maybe just enough people have heard that we will give beer a good home that they’re just like knocking.
[0:06:24 – 0:06:31] Adam: This is like a stork stopped by and dropped off a red sack of beer and t-shirts from Iowa.
[0:06:31 – 0:06:32] Erik: I’m not ready.
[0:06:32 – 0:06:35] Adam: It’s like a mango IPA with some t-shirts and a red bag.
[0:06:35 – 0:06:40] Adam: If you are the person who dropped this off at the club, we need to know your name.
[0:06:40 – 0:06:43] Adam: Marnie, God bless you, Marnie, but you didn’t get their name.
[0:06:44 – 0:06:46] Adam: And they fled the scene before I could get out there.
[0:06:46 – 0:06:48] Adam: I wasn’t there at the time of donation.
[0:06:49 – 0:06:51] Adam: This is your friendly weekly reminder.
[0:06:51 – 0:06:57] Adam: If you are dropping off art supplies at Cook County Whole Foods Co-op, make sure you attach your name to it so we can give you your shout-out.
[0:06:58 – 0:07:05] Adam: And that brings us to this week’s beer sponsorship of the week for episode 0161.
[0:07:05 – 0:07:08] Erik: That it is, the episode 0161.
[0:07:08 – 0:07:16] Erik: Before we get to that beer, just let me say, it’s very possible that the beer sponsorship has made themselves known
[0:07:18 – 0:07:35] Erik: available and clear as to their intentions but i have been relatively um let’s just say off-grid for the last almost 10 days now so some of those emails that are out there if you’re looking for a response my apologies
[0:07:36 – 0:07:40] Erik: If they were timely, I will try to respond as necessary.
[0:07:40 – 0:07:44] Erik: But there very well could be a message out there on the tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:44] Erik: I’m back.
[0:07:45 – 0:07:45] Erik: I am here.
[0:07:46 – 0:07:46] Erik: Don’t worry.
[0:07:46 – 0:07:51] Erik: You can start sending emails and know that they will be responded to in a timely manner.
[0:07:51 – 0:07:56] Erik: But if you are the red bag beer bandit and you did send an email, apologies.
[0:07:56 – 0:07:57] Erik: We will retroactively…
[0:07:59 – 0:08:00] Adam: Oh, we’ll get to… Yeah, we’ll make sure.
[0:08:00 – 0:08:02] Adam: We’re going to do a little research phase right now.
[0:08:02 – 0:08:07] Adam: It’s going to be a while until Red Bag Beer Bandit gets to the top of the list.
[0:08:08 – 0:08:09] Adam: It’s like Packer season tickets over here.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:20] Adam: You’re going to want to donate a beer in the name of your firstborn child the day they’re born, and then the beer might get onto the show in their lifetime is how it’s going to work right now.
[0:08:20 – 0:08:20] Adam: So…
[0:08:21 – 0:08:35] Adam: Perhaps, Eric, the name of the donator of the beers was written on a piece of fabric sewn to the inside of the t-shirt, like in the Daniel Day-Lewis movie, Phantom Thread.
[0:08:35 – 0:08:37] Adam: Shut up about that movie.
[0:08:37 – 0:08:39] Adam: So that’s going to be my pick for September.
[0:08:39 – 0:08:39] Adam: No, are you serious?
[0:08:39 – 0:08:42] Adam: We’re going to have Daniel Day-Lewis double feature.
[0:08:43 – 0:08:46] Adam: Just announced it, and we’re watching Phantom Thread.
[0:08:46 – 0:08:48] Adam: It’s a 98 on Metacritic, Eric.
[0:08:48 – 0:08:49] Adam: It’s going to be a banger.
[0:08:50 – 0:08:51] Adam: You’re going to love it.
[0:08:52 – 0:08:58] Adam: We’re going from Daniel Day-Lewis’ first movie to, I believe it’s his last.
[0:09:00 – 0:09:06] Erik: So what is it going to take for you to accept me quitting this podcast?
[0:09:08 – 0:09:09] Adam: No, you would never.
[0:09:10 – 0:09:13] Erik: Well, in the last week, I have quit drinking coffee.
[0:09:13 – 0:09:13] Erik: What?
[0:09:14 – 0:09:14] Adam Scat: Mm-hmm.
[0:09:15 – 0:09:36] Adam: well you know maybe if we find out who donated the red bag of beer then i’ll change my mind but otherwise i’ll do it we’re gonna have to watch phantom thread to figure out how to find the clues to figure out the mystery of the t-shirt red bag and uh mango ipa mystery i really don’t see how those all play into each other but i’ll do it i will you know i’ve been wanting to watch this movie
[0:09:36 – 0:09:39] Erik: Yeah, no, you’ve been subtly hinting at it for the last three months.
[0:09:39 – 0:09:40] Adam: I think the time is now.
[0:09:40 – 0:09:42] Adam: Yeah, well, it’s going to happen.
[0:09:42 – 0:09:44] Adam: So that’s your second one for September.
[0:09:44 – 0:09:45] Adam: We’ll have that one in there too.
[0:09:45 – 0:09:45] Adam: Yeah.
[0:09:46 – 0:09:47] Adam: Maybe in three weeks’ time.
[0:09:48 – 0:09:49] Erik: Well, for sure.
[0:09:49 – 0:09:50] Erik: And then it’s spooky time.
[0:09:50 – 0:09:51] Erik: Oh, for sure.
[0:09:51 – 0:09:52] Erik: And who knows what’s going to happen then.
[0:09:52 – 0:09:53] Adam: I can’t wait for October.
[0:09:54 – 0:09:55] Adam: See, I got to get it in now.
[0:09:55 – 0:09:56] Adam: Otherwise, it’s going to be like November.
[0:09:56 – 0:09:58] Adam: And then November is something else.
[0:09:58 – 0:10:00] Erik: And then it’s all Christmas movies.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:02] Adam: Yeah, then it’s February by the time we watch Phantom Thread.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:03] Adam: Come on.
[0:10:03 – 0:10:04] Erik: It’s your last opportunity.
[0:10:05 – 0:10:09] Adam: Also, I’ve still lost the list for all the Tumble Home Cinema Classic ideas.
[0:10:09 – 0:10:13] Erik: Yeah, does anybody have a transcript from one of the last times we’ve read the list?
[0:10:14 – 0:10:17] Adam: I have all the ones we talked about last episode, so at least those are on the list.
[0:10:18 – 0:10:22] Adam: I started a new list, but we need a whiteboard, and we need some better Christmas lights in the studio.
[0:10:22 – 0:10:24] Erik: You need a whiteboard, and you need one now.
[0:10:24 – 0:10:27] Adam: Jeffrey Bezos.
[0:10:27 – 0:10:30] Adam: Jeffrey Bezos.
[0:10:30 – 0:10:32] Adam: Congratulations.
[0:10:32 – 0:10:35] Erik: Does Tumble Home need a whiteboard purchased?
[0:10:36 – 0:10:37] Adam: Yeah, and party lights.
[0:10:37 – 0:10:38] Adam: More party lights for sure.
[0:10:38 – 0:10:44] Erik: I’ll pull some funds out of the not-yet-been-touched…
[0:10:46 – 0:11:14] Erik: uh patreon just uh that’s what we’re gonna first use it for a little whiteboard fund you better tell the irs buddy you better tell the irs i swear it was for a whiteboard sir for the llc uh it’s a certified business expense certified see we’ve got the shed here nope it doesn’t have a permanent floor so it can be moved we don’t need to have a building permit for this either
[0:11:15 – 0:11:17] Erik: Wait, you’re a building permit checker and the tax man?
[0:11:18 – 0:11:22] Erik: We’ve got some Mankato Brewing Organ Grinders.
[0:11:23 – 0:11:23] Erik: Amber Ale.
[0:11:24 – 0:11:25] Erik: These are from Derek.
[0:11:26 – 0:11:27] Erik: God knows.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:29] Erik: Only Lord knows.
[0:11:30 – 0:11:31] Erik: Both Lord and God.
[0:11:31 – 0:11:34] Erik: When these beers came in, but thank you, Derek.
[0:11:35 – 0:11:37] Erik: Adam already broke one opening the fridge.
[0:11:37 – 0:11:38] Erik: It fell out and sprayed everywhere.
[0:11:40 – 0:11:41] Adam: The fridge broke it.
[0:11:41 – 0:11:42] Erik: Okay.
[0:11:43 – 0:12:03] Erik: Oh, and anybody that works at Mankato Brewery or knows somebody that does, or just generally, if you’ve ever had a Mankato beer in the Lowboy cans, you can’t open them without getting all kinds of beer all up in your grill and or lower grill.
[0:12:03 – 0:12:08] Adam: We’re not saying your cans are defective, but mine exploded and Eric could barely open it.
[0:12:08 – 0:12:10] Erik: Well, they’re just filled too much.
[0:12:11 – 0:12:11] Erik: Too full.
[0:12:12 – 0:12:12] Erik: Too much.
[0:12:13 – 0:12:13] Adam: Well, that’s a good thing.
[0:12:13 – 0:12:15] Adam: That’s a good problem to have then.
[0:12:16 – 0:12:18] Adam: So anyways, I recovered most of mine.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:23] Adam: I was quick on my feet, and well within the five-second rule, I recovered mine.
[0:12:23 – 0:12:26] Adam: I poured it into my ash pottery chalice.
[0:12:27 – 0:12:29] Adam: I still have at least 85% of this one.
[0:12:29 – 0:12:30] Adam: Cheers, Eric.
[0:12:30 – 0:12:32] Adam: Cheers.
[0:12:32 – 0:12:33] Erik: Toasty.
[0:12:34 – 0:12:38] Erik: With a touch of sweetness and a slight noble hop presence.
[0:12:39 – 0:12:43] Erik: Sipping on an organ grinder is like a gentle melody for the tongue.
[0:12:44 – 0:12:48] Erik: Don’t feed his monkey, though, or he’ll pilfer your wallet and your hat.
[0:12:49 – 0:12:50] Erik: Trust us on that one.
[0:12:53 – 0:12:53] Erik: All right.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:58] Erik: Yeah, it’s an amber ale, all right.
[0:13:00 – 0:13:03] Adam: Yeah, it’s pretty sturdy, I would say.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:04] Erik: Hmm.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:09] Adam: Pretty sturdy, despite the fact that the can exploded.
[0:13:09 – 0:13:12] Adam: I’m going to give this a four out of five mmms.
[0:13:13 – 0:13:20] Erik: I’m going to give mine a two out of four sturdies, because it’s like a two by four.
[0:13:22 – 0:13:29] Adam: Yeah, no idea when this one came in, but it’s a miracle we still know that Derek bestowed upon us this fine art supply.
[0:13:29 – 0:13:30] Adam: Thank you, Derek.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:31] Erik: Yeah, none of this is written down.
[0:13:31 – 0:13:33] Erik: It’s all up here, baby.
[0:13:33 – 0:13:34] Adam: Good thing Eric remembered.
[0:13:35 – 0:13:40] Adam: My system is a little bit more pen and paper, but to each their own, you know.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:43] Erik: Yeah, we get that whiteboard.
[0:13:43 – 0:13:45] Erik: It’s like a flat brain.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:48] Adam: We could maybe use a couple whiteboards, I would think.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:49] Erik: Okay, so it’s a two-dimensional brain.
[0:13:49 – 0:13:52] Adam: We got multiple lists that we need to be keeping track of anyhow.
[0:13:52 – 0:14:00] Adam: And yeah, I mean, we got the fridge, we got the cabinets, and now we got the cot holding some reserve beers at this point.
[0:14:00 – 0:14:01] Adam: Yeah, and my bed.
[0:14:01 – 0:14:02] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:02 – 0:14:03] Adam: We’re in too deep.
[0:14:03 – 0:14:07] Adam: How do you keep beer from freezing inside of a shed that’s not heated?
[0:14:08 – 0:14:13] Adam: Is there a small miniature heater we can get to keep like a sous vide fridge?
[0:14:13 – 0:14:14] Adam: Perfect equilibrium.
[0:14:14 – 0:14:14] Adam: Sous vide.
[0:14:15 – 0:14:17] Adam: And then just keep that fridge at 41.
[0:14:18 – 0:14:18] Adam: Perfecto.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:19] Adam: 33.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:19] Adam: 41.
[0:14:19 – 0:14:23] Adam: 41 would be fine.
[0:14:23 – 0:14:29] Adam: You don’t want to mess around trying to keep her at, you know, 41 is fine.
[0:14:29 – 0:14:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:30 – 0:14:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:14:30 – 0:14:31] Adam: Right in the danger zone.
[0:14:31 – 0:14:32] Adam: Right in the danger zone.
[0:14:32 – 0:14:34] Adam: Are you a certified kitchen manager or not?
[0:14:34 – 0:14:35] Adam: You don’t want to keep it at 41.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:35] Adam: No.
[0:14:38 – 0:14:47] Erik: So we’re talking non… We’re still adjacent even though the Boundary Waters has opened back up for the most part besides the end of the Gunflint Trail and its entry points.
[0:14:48 – 0:14:51] Erik: Basically starting at like Cross Bay, I believe.
[0:14:51 – 0:14:59] Erik: Cross Bay, Brandt, and Northward are all still closed because of the John Eck fire.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:04] Erik: Which still doesn’t really seem to be doing much over the course of the week that I have been gone.
[0:15:05 – 0:15:09] Erik: It rained like two inches the morning I left and that helped.
[0:15:09 – 0:15:16] Erik: And then it’s rained not substantially throughout, but some spots have gotten a lot of rain.
[0:15:17 – 0:15:19] Erik: So things are improving.
[0:15:19 – 0:15:20] Erik: The nights are growing longer.
[0:15:21 – 0:15:24] Erik: Every morning, like everything is just covered in dew.
[0:15:24 – 0:15:30] Erik: So I think that we are, I think we’re past the point of like, it’s all going to burn.
[0:15:30 – 0:15:32] Erik: Like, I don’t know.
[0:15:32 – 0:15:41] Erik: There could maybe be like a light run or two here yet, but it seems to me like we are past, we’re over the hill on dangerous conditions.
[0:15:42 – 0:15:43] Adam: Yeah, I concur.
[0:15:43 – 0:15:45] Adam: It was nice and crispy this morning.
[0:15:46 – 0:15:46] Erik: Crispy in a good way.
[0:15:47 – 0:15:48] Adam: Yeah, like brr.
[0:15:49 – 0:15:50] Erik: Yeah, brr.
[0:15:50 – 0:15:50] Erik: Crispy.
[0:15:51 – 0:15:52] Adam: I need a hood.
[0:15:52 – 0:15:53] Erik: And like super dewy.
[0:15:54 – 0:15:54] Adam: Yes.
[0:15:55 – 0:15:55] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:55 – 0:16:00] Adam: Yeah, like I actually started the car up and like ran the heater a little bit before work today.
[0:16:00 – 0:16:01] Adam: Oh, wow.
[0:16:01 – 0:16:02] Adam: That’s the first time of the year for that.
[0:16:02 – 0:16:04] Adam: So that’s how crispy it was.
[0:16:09 – 0:16:10] Adam Scat: What’s he doing?
[0:16:10 – 0:16:11] Adam Scat: Oh, God.
[0:16:12 – 0:16:20] Adam: Yeah, the question of the week, as far as I understood it, was if you can’t go in the Boundary Waters, though, where are you going?
[0:16:21 – 0:16:32] Adam: What’s your alternative trips and areas of nature you like to visit that are sort of like the Boundary Waters but not quite the Boundary Waters?
[0:16:33 – 0:16:34] Adam: What comes to mind for me?
[0:16:34 – 0:16:35] Adam: Namakagan River.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:39] Erik: Oh, I bet you thought that’s the only one time it’s going to be mentioned.
[0:16:39 – 0:16:40] Adam: Timber Free Air.
[0:16:41 – 0:16:47] Adam: Actually, Namakagan River is part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, which is what you want to call that.
[0:16:48 – 0:16:52] Adam: But, yeah, the Namakagan is the best part of that whole park in my estimation.
[0:16:53 – 0:16:54] Adam: Been on there a lot.
[0:16:54 – 0:16:55] Adam: I’m sure a lot of people will mention it.
[0:16:56 – 0:16:57] Adam: It’s a wonderful spot.
[0:16:58 – 0:17:00] Adam: Sylvania, yeah.
[0:17:00 – 0:17:01] Adam: Timber Free Air, stuff like that.
[0:17:01 – 0:17:04] Erik: Timber Free Air isn’t really like its own park, though.
[0:17:04 – 0:17:07] Adam: No, but it’s its own little loop that you could do.
[0:17:07 – 0:17:26] Adam: yeah that’s hyper specific that’s superior national forests yeah you’re gonna say that you could say like the west twin east twin chemo you know trestle pine loop you know which is slightly smaller same kind of deal yeah more cabins easier to get to though timur ferrer is kind of out there you know um
[0:17:28 – 0:17:29] Adam Scat: I don’t know.
[0:17:29 – 0:17:32] Adam: Yeah, there’s lots of other spots you can just go paddle a canoe and camp.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:38] Adam: I know there’s a couple spots like north central Wisconsin too, flowage.
[0:17:39 – 0:17:41] Erik: How about non-paddling in your opinion?
[0:17:42 – 0:17:49] Adam: Non-paddling, yeah, like why, you know, if you can’t paddle the BWCA and you can’t get up to the big parks in Canada.
[0:17:49 – 0:17:50] Erik: Foot parks.
[0:17:50 – 0:17:52] Adam: Yeah, foot park.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:57] Adam: Yeah, I mean, Grand Canyon trip would always be something I’d want to do again.
[0:17:59 – 0:18:08] Adam: Can’t ever do enough Grand Canyon trips, I guess, if you can get the backcountry permits, which I’ve never had a hard time getting if you go in there like the right times of year, I guess.
[0:18:09 – 0:18:30] Adam: yeah canyon land stuff like that if you’re willing to drive out west like a wackadoodle like this guy and uh i don’t know then you got like the big like i guess the next one i would do having done those two would be like i don’t know do an appalachian trail like multiple multi-night trip there or the the pacific crest or something
[0:18:31 – 0:18:55] Adam: well i’m sure if you could if travel was like no deal and you could just go you know anywhere in north america i guess sure not you know i guess in the lower 48 yeah well those would be those would be top targets for me that i’ve not done that come to mind right away i’m sure there’s like a lot of other like neat stuff you could do just on foot though that’s not like kind of that grand i don’t know you’ve just been to yellowstone is there any hiking out there
[0:18:55 – 0:18:57] Erik: No.
[0:18:57 – 0:18:58] Erik: Snowmobiling?
[0:18:59 – 0:19:01] Erik: No, I don’t want to spoil my thoughts on Yellowstone.
[0:19:02 – 0:19:05] Erik: There’s going to be some future material on that disaster of a national park.
[0:19:05 – 0:19:06] Adam: I don’t know what happened.
[0:19:07 – 0:19:07] Adam: Just tell me.
[0:19:08 – 0:19:08] Erik: No.
[0:19:08 – 0:19:12] Erik: I can tell you off mic, but I’m not.
[0:19:13 – 0:19:15] Adam: Save it for the ride to golf after.
[0:19:15 – 0:19:15] Erik: It’s not good.
[0:19:17 – 0:19:24] Erik: Um, yeah, no, I don’t, I mean, I kind of had a bit of a discovery of like how amazing the bulk of Idaho is though.
[0:19:25 – 0:19:26] Adam: Sure.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:27] Adam: I didn’t expect you to end up there.
[0:19:28 – 0:19:28] Erik: I didn’t really either.
[0:19:29 – 0:19:35] Erik: I ended up sort of, I think, two weeks ago, the night before I left, I said I was just going out to the desert.
[0:19:36 – 0:19:37] Erik: Going out to the desert.
[0:19:37 – 0:19:38] Erik: Because I do love the desert.
[0:19:38 – 0:19:42] Erik: But I was tracking the smoke, more or less.
[0:19:43 – 0:19:45] Erik: And kind of wanted to get away from it.
[0:19:45 – 0:19:48] Erik: So I veered away from Nevada at the last second.
[0:19:48 – 0:19:49] Erik: And also the…
[0:19:49 – 0:19:50] Erik: Smoke tracker.
[0:19:50 – 0:19:54] Erik: The trauma that occurred in Yellowstone to me.
[0:19:55 – 0:19:57] Erik: I veered away and I veered off of the interstate.
[0:19:58 – 0:20:04] Erik: The one like hour on the interstate that I was on was just outside of Yellowstone because I was trying to flee so hard.
[0:20:04 – 0:20:07] Erik: But then the interstate was just as stressful.
[0:20:08 – 0:20:16] Erik: So then I fled yet again and found myself in like the clearest of clear skies I have seen in a long time.
[0:20:17 – 0:20:17] Erik: And the…
[0:20:18 – 0:20:27] Erik: The Sawtooth National Recreation Area seems like I was only there for two days, but it seems like you could spend weeks there.
[0:20:28 – 0:20:32] Erik: Basically, anything that you like to do outside, it’s available to you.
[0:20:33 – 0:20:37] Erik: And I think I did see probably the best night of stars in my life as well.
[0:20:38 – 0:20:39] Erik: Wow.
[0:20:39 – 0:20:40] Erik: On that trip.
[0:20:40 – 0:20:43] Erik: It was like you couldn’t even see the Milky Way.
[0:20:43 – 0:20:45] Erik: Like the whole sky was.
[0:20:45 – 0:20:46] Adam: It’s all milky.
[0:20:46 – 0:20:49] Erik: It was like almost as much stars as darkness.
[0:20:50 – 0:20:51] Erik: It was wild.
[0:20:51 – 0:20:54] Erik: I’ve never seen the sky so filled with stars.
[0:20:54 – 0:20:55] Erik: Now that’s crispy.
[0:20:55 – 0:20:55] Erik: Yes.
[0:20:56 – 0:20:58] Erik: I was almost at like 7,000 feet elevation.
[0:20:59 – 0:20:59] Erik: Oh.
[0:20:59 – 0:21:00] Erik: So like that helps.
[0:21:01 – 0:21:02] Erik: And it was no moon.
[0:21:02 – 0:21:03] Erik: There was nothing.
[0:21:03 – 0:21:05] Adam: I always forget about the elevation.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:05] Adam: I like that.
[0:21:06 – 0:21:08] Adam: What would you call it?
[0:21:08 – 0:21:09] Adam: It’s not a plateau.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:11] Erik: Well, the atmosphere gets in the way.
[0:21:11 – 0:21:11] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:21:12 – 0:21:14] Adam: Is it the Colorado River Plateau?
[0:21:14 – 0:21:18] Adam: There’s a name for that whole western slope that’s all super high up.
[0:21:19 – 0:21:21] Adam: Basically, it goes all the way down to the Grand Canyon.
[0:21:21 – 0:21:24] Erik: That was basically on top of the Continental Divide.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:26] Erik: Yeah, that’s freaky high up there.
[0:21:26 – 0:21:30] Erik: Yeah, just south of Glacier National Park.
[0:21:31 – 0:21:38] Erik: And, yeah, I got up in the middle of the night, and, yeah, it turned into a very much extended relief break.
[0:21:39 – 0:21:42] Erik: I was just chin to the sky gawking.
[0:21:44 – 0:21:48] Erik: That’s just a random, not necessarily a favorite park of mine.
[0:21:48 – 0:21:53] Erik: I think mine still to this point is a very desert-based one, and that is Death Valley.
[0:21:53 – 0:21:56] Erik: That is a foot park, very much so.
[0:21:57 – 0:22:02] Erik: I don’t know if I have too many other ones that come to mind in terms of water parks, though.
[0:22:03 – 0:22:06] Adam: Yeah, Noah’s Ark and Wisconsin Dells, of course.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:07] Adam: Yeah, I mean, of course.
[0:22:07 – 0:22:07] Adam: That’s pretty good.
[0:22:09 – 0:22:10] Adam: Anybody done the plunge?
[0:22:11 – 0:22:11] Adam: Yeah.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:13] Adam: Any of you brave ones out there done the plunge?
[0:22:14 – 0:22:18] Erik: The Tommy Bartlett experience, when that was a thing, unfortunately.
[0:22:18 – 0:22:19] Erik: R.I.P.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:20] Erik: Tommy.
[0:22:20 – 0:22:21] Adam: And the water skis.
[0:22:22 – 0:22:23] Adam: And the water skis, yeah.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:24] Erik: All them water skis.
[0:22:24 – 0:22:25] Erik: They’re in splinters at this point.
[0:22:26 – 0:22:32] Erik: And then, I mean, it doesn’t really count, but like, I mean, Quetico, kind of.
[0:22:32 – 0:22:34] Adam: Yeah, but right now we can’t go.
[0:22:34 – 0:22:35] Adam: Well, can we?
[0:22:35 – 0:22:38] Adam: We can go across, but only through by car.
[0:22:38 – 0:22:40] Erik: You could drive through.
[0:22:40 – 0:22:43] Adam: Yeah, you got to go up to Atacocan by car.
[0:22:43 – 0:22:49] Erik: Yeah, and then basically paddle like the northeast corner because the southwest part of the park is all on fire.
[0:22:49 – 0:22:50] SPEAKER_02: Pickerel.
[0:22:51 – 0:22:51] SPEAKER_02: Pickerel.
[0:22:52 – 0:22:53] Erik: Yeah, pick a roll.
[0:22:53 – 0:22:54] Erik: Go up there on Watassi.
[0:22:54 – 0:22:56] Erik: Go up to Watassi.
[0:22:59 – 0:23:00] Erik: Shabandawan.
[0:23:00 – 0:23:01] Adam: Yep.
[0:23:01 – 0:23:03] Adam: Shabandawan’s got some nice lakes.
[0:23:05 – 0:23:05] Erik: Yeah.
[0:23:06 – 0:23:07] Erik: So, I mean…
[0:23:09 – 0:23:17] Erik: I don’t know if you’re necessarily prepared for or if it really warrants a wildfire update at this point.
[0:23:17 – 0:23:18] Erik: I don’t have anything.
[0:23:18 – 0:23:20] Erik: How thorough you were the last time.
[0:23:20 – 0:23:21] Adam: I’m done.
[0:23:21 – 0:23:24] Adam: That segment, Eric, that segment’s done.
[0:23:24 – 0:23:25] Erik: It’s a summer segment only.
[0:23:26 – 0:23:27] Adam: Yeah, only for August.
[0:23:27 – 0:23:28] Adam: We flipped the calendar.
[0:23:28 – 0:23:30] Adam: We flipped the Ron Sharer to September.
[0:23:30 – 0:23:31] Adam: Fire update.
[0:23:31 – 0:23:32] Adam: That one’s dead.
[0:23:32 – 0:23:34] Adam: We’re not bringing that one back ever again.
[0:23:34 – 0:23:35] Erik: That one’s at a monitor status.
[0:23:38 – 0:23:41] Erik: I don’t think we still have any…
[0:23:41 – 0:23:42] Adam: They’re all contained.
[0:23:43 – 0:23:47] Erik: Yeah, we don’t really have any questions of the week going forward at this point.
[0:23:47 – 0:23:53] Erik: We will, but let’s do this one first.
[0:23:56 – 0:23:56] Adam: Are you ready?
[0:23:58 – 0:23:59] Adam: Hit it, maestro.
[0:24:02 – 0:24:03] Erik: Top upvoted.
[0:24:03 – 0:24:08] Erik: Here’s another box of Franzia for you, my good man.
[0:24:09 – 0:24:11] Erik: Fazmata.
[0:24:11 – 0:24:11] Erik: Mata?
[0:24:12 – 0:24:21] Erik: I’m still only just beginning to check places off of my bucket list after nearly a decade of being prevented from living life due to my work.
[0:24:22 – 0:24:25] Erik: Well, I’m glad that that sentence ended the way it did.
[0:24:26 – 0:24:31] Erik: The BWCAW was the beginning of this process, but it hasn’t
[0:24:33 – 0:24:36] Erik: but it isn’t the last wilderness I plan to visit.
[0:24:37 – 0:24:45] Erik: I have been getting myself very excited to visit Wabakimi Park in Ontario sooner than later, though I’m not sure which part I’d like to visit first.
[0:24:46 – 0:24:52] Erik: The Kopka River route looks amazing, but I’m also drawn to the odd story of Wendell Beckwith,
[0:24:52 – 0:25:00] Erik: who was a scientist that lived the last 20 years of his life alone in a cabin there, calling it the center of the universe.
[0:25:01 – 0:25:05] Erik: I’ve read that his cabin is an oddity itself and can be visited.
[0:25:05 – 0:25:09] Adam: Is that that weird mansion tower thing?
[0:25:10 – 0:25:11] Erik: Uh, no.
[0:25:11 – 0:25:13] Erik: That’s in White Otter or whatever.
[0:25:14 – 0:25:15] Erik: North of Atikokan.
[0:25:15 – 0:25:16] Erik: There’s the White Otter Castle.
[0:25:17 – 0:25:17] Adam: That’s what I’m thinking of.
[0:25:17 – 0:25:18] Adam: The castle.
[0:25:18 – 0:25:19] Erik: Uh-huh.
[0:25:19 – 0:25:20] Erik: Yeah.
[0:25:20 – 0:25:24] Erik: We saw notes and signs for that when we were in Atikokan.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:31] Erik: That was another one of those ones that’s like built by hand just over the years by scraps of lumber that some crazy person found.
[0:25:32 – 0:25:34] Erik: Or maybe it’s much more than that.
[0:25:34 – 0:25:34] Erik: Genius.
[0:25:34 – 0:25:35] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:25:35 – 0:25:36] Erik: Or maybe it’s genius.
[0:25:36 – 0:25:39] Adam: Genius level driftwood construction.
[0:25:40 – 0:25:47] Adam: driftwood construction wendell beckwith never knew a driftwood construction eric
[0:25:47 – 0:25:50] Erik: A coffee table made out of driftwood.
[0:25:50 – 0:25:58] Erik: Also high on the list is a winter canoe trip in Georgia’s Okefenokee.
[0:25:59 – 0:25:59] Adam: Nailed it.
[0:25:59 – 0:26:00] Adam: Butchered it.
[0:26:02 – 0:26:04] Erik: Okefenokee Swamp.
[0:26:04 – 0:26:06] Adam: Okefenokee.
[0:26:06 – 0:26:08] Erik: Too many Fs, not enough Ks.
[0:26:08 – 0:26:16] Erik: A great contrast to the Northwoods and something to do to escape Wisconsin’s dreary winter.
[0:26:17 – 0:26:17] SPEAKER_02: What?
[0:26:17 – 0:26:19] Adam: Cheery.
[0:26:19 – 0:26:19] Adam: Cheery?
[0:26:20 – 0:26:20] Adam: No.
[0:26:20 – 0:26:23] Adam: That’s what Fleischmann’s is for there, bud.
[0:26:23 – 0:26:24] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:26] Adam: A little bit of sunshine in your cup.
[0:26:26 – 0:26:29] Erik: Brighten any day with some Fleischmann’s gin.
[0:26:30 – 0:26:31] Erik: Come on.
[0:26:31 – 0:26:32] Erik: Pour a little orange juice in there.
[0:26:34 – 0:26:42] Erik: It’s like you’re down on the beaches of… Closer to home, the Porkies in Upper Michigan are on the list as I’ve never been.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:45] Erik: And so is Isle Royale.
[0:26:45 – 0:26:52] Erik: Specifically on Isle Royale, my attraction to curiosities has me wanting to visit Ryan Island.
[0:26:53 – 0:27:00] Erik: The largest island in the largest lake on the largest island of the world’s largest lake.
[0:27:01 – 0:27:02] Erik: That’s by volume, though.
[0:27:03 – 0:27:04] Adam: Or is it surface area?
[0:27:04 – 0:27:06] Adam: And it’s called Ryan Island.
[0:27:06 – 0:27:06] Adam: Yeah, come on.
[0:27:06 – 0:27:07] Adam: That’s what they came up with?
[0:27:07 – 0:27:07] Adam: Really?
[0:27:08 – 0:27:15] Adam: We just had the words Wabakimi, Okafanoki, Porky’s, and Aroyal on the show, and now it’s Ryan Island.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:16] Adam: Yeah.
[0:27:16 – 0:27:18] Adam: Are you sure it’s not Ryan Island?
[0:27:18 – 0:27:19] Adam: Rian.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:19] Adam: Rian.
[0:27:20 – 0:27:20] Adam: Rian.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:23] Adam: It should be called, it should rename it for Rihanna.
[0:27:24 – 0:27:25] Adam Scat: Rihanna Island?
[0:27:26 – 0:27:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:28] Erik: Yeah, I mean, that would make sense considering her career.
[0:27:30 – 0:27:32] Adam: And love of Valle Royale.
[0:27:32 – 0:27:32] Erik: And islands.
[0:27:34 – 0:27:38] Erik: Superior is the largest lake in the world by its surface area, though, right?
[0:27:40 – 0:27:42] Adam: I’m going to fact check that on the fly.
[0:27:42 – 0:27:42] Adam: It’s true.
[0:27:42 – 0:27:44] Adam: Yeah.
[0:27:44 – 0:27:44] Adam: Ding.
[0:27:44 – 0:27:45] Adam: Ding.
[0:27:45 – 0:27:45] Adam: Nailed it.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:46] Adam: Surface area.
[0:27:46 – 0:27:46] Adam: Yeah.
[0:27:48 – 0:27:50] Erik: This is made even more intriguing.
[0:27:50 – 0:27:51] Adam: Not by volume.
[0:27:51 – 0:27:53] Erik: No, by call as volume.
[0:27:54 – 0:27:54] Adam: Yeah, Baikal.
[0:27:54 – 0:27:55] Adam: We all know Baikal.
[0:27:56 – 0:27:59] Adam: And they have more merpeople per square meter, too.
[0:28:00 – 0:28:00] Adam: Yes.
[0:28:00 – 0:28:00] Adam: And Baikal.
[0:28:01 – 0:28:01] Adam: Of course.
[0:28:01 – 0:28:02] Adam: Compared to Superior.
[0:28:03 – 0:28:06] Adam: Just set the record straight on that right away while we’re talking about these two.
[0:28:06 – 0:28:07] Erik: Before we move on.
[0:28:07 – 0:28:08] Erik: Set the record straight.
[0:28:08 – 0:28:14] Adam: Can the merpeople get from the Big Lake into the Little Lake by this Ryan Island?
[0:28:14 – 0:28:15] Adam: Ryan, you say?
[0:28:15 – 0:28:16] Adam: Is that how it works?
[0:28:16 – 0:28:19] Adam: There must be some sort of undersea tunnels.
[0:28:19 – 0:28:22] Erik: You know what they call islands on Isle Royale?
[0:28:23 – 0:28:24] Erik: Ryans.
[0:28:24 – 0:28:24] Erik: Ryans.
[0:28:27 – 0:28:36] Erik: This is made even more intriguing to me by the story of a moose boulder and how it is likely a weird internet hoax.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:37] Erik: A great story.
[0:28:37 – 0:28:40] Erik: I feel like you guys might get a kick out of it.
[0:28:40 – 0:28:41] Adam: Definitely click the link.
[0:28:41 – 0:28:42] Adam: Do it.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:43] Adam: Click the link.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:44] Adam: I believe him.
[0:28:44 – 0:28:45] Adam: Click it.
[0:28:46 – 0:28:47] Adam: And he’s got a virus.
[0:28:48 – 0:28:49] Adam: That’s the end of that episode.
[0:28:53 – 0:28:54] Erik: It seems like a lot of reading.
[0:28:55 – 0:28:59] Adam: Anybody been to Chambers Island off of Door County in Green Bay?
[0:28:59 – 0:29:00] Adam: Oh, I’m sure.
[0:29:00 – 0:29:00] Adam: Lake Michigan.
[0:29:01 – 0:29:02] Adam: I’m sure a number of people have.
[0:29:02 – 0:29:03] Adam: United States of America.
[0:29:03 – 0:29:04] Adam: Planet Earth.
[0:29:04 – 0:29:05] Adam: USA.
[0:29:05 – 0:29:08] Adam: They got a lake within an island with an island.
[0:29:08 – 0:29:10] Adam: I can’t remember the name of that island.
[0:29:10 – 0:29:14] Adam: I believe it was something like Tyler Island.
[0:29:14 – 0:29:15] Adam: I think it was called Tyler.
[0:29:15 – 0:29:16] Erik: Oh, geez.
[0:29:16 – 0:29:17] Erik: That’s worse than Ryan.
[0:29:18 – 0:29:19] Adam: Gale Island.
[0:29:20 – 0:29:21] Erik: Well, I’m all safe.
[0:29:21 – 0:29:24] Adam: That’s actually kind of good, actually, a lake within a lake.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:25] Adam Scat: Gale.
[0:29:25 – 0:29:27] Erik: Okay.
[0:29:27 – 0:29:31] Erik: Well, I will save the link here, Phasmata, and maybe we’ll come back.
[0:29:32 – 0:29:35] Adam: Phasmata just filled up the whole first half of the page on the notebook here.
[0:29:35 – 0:29:38] Erik: Links on Moose Boulders.
[0:29:39 – 0:29:41] Erik: I could keep going forever.
[0:29:41 – 0:29:41] Erik: Forever ever?
[0:29:42 – 0:29:47] Erik: But we’ll leave it there since much of my list is probably shared with fellow Tumble homies.
[0:29:48 – 0:29:51] Erik: I’m also looking forward to hearing about some new places from PB.
[0:29:52 – 0:29:52] Erik: Nice shit.
[0:29:56 – 0:30:02] Erik: Yeah, the intrepid mother and son who unraveled a geographic hoax.
[0:30:04 – 0:30:12] Adam: Next up on Tumble Home Cinema Classics TV, TCC TV, Boulder Moose.
[0:30:13 – 0:30:14] Erik: Was it a hoax?
[0:30:15 – 0:30:16] Erik: Was it real?
[0:30:16 – 0:30:21] Erik: I think that article basically in the title says that they revealed it to be a hoax.
[0:30:22 – 0:30:23] Adam: We’ll see about that.
[0:30:23 – 0:30:24] Erik: We’ll see about that.
[0:30:24 – 0:30:25] Adam: We’ll see about that.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:32] Adam: Next up on the show, friend of the show, Gobi In My Pants, 12 Boxes of Franzia.
[0:30:32 – 0:30:34] Adam: There we go.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:38] Adam: I like the turtle flambeau flowage in northern Wisconsin.
[0:30:38 – 0:30:40] Adam: It’s kind of like a diet, BWCA.
[0:30:41 – 0:30:47] Adam: It has canoe camping and first-come, first-served sites, but not so much of a wilderness feel since there are powerboats.
[0:30:48 – 0:30:54] Adam: Bobby and Uncle Rex are pretty much guaranteed to be at the next site over, so be prepared to hear a party.
[0:30:56 – 0:30:57] Adam: There’s a Chrome Crappers.
[0:30:57 – 0:30:59] Adam: Oh, this is where the Chrome Crappers are.
[0:30:59 – 0:31:01] Adam: There’s Chrome Crappers there, too.
[0:31:02 – 0:31:03] Adam: So you do feel a little fancy.
[0:31:05 – 0:31:07] Adam: I remember seeing the pictures of those on the subreddit.
[0:31:07 – 0:31:08] Adam: They seem hot.
[0:31:08 – 0:31:09] Adam: That’s where it came from.
[0:31:10 – 0:31:18] Adam: I’ve been trying to put together a trip to Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in Ontario, but none of my usual tripmates have any interest.
[0:31:18 – 0:31:20] Adam: It seems to be like Quetico Plus.
[0:31:21 – 0:31:24] Adam: Fewer people than the queue and more remote.
[0:31:24 – 0:31:27] Adam: Other than that, anywhere I can paddle and camp, I’m pretty happy.
[0:31:28 – 0:31:30] Adam: I’ve heard good things about the Wisconsin River as well.
[0:31:30 – 0:31:31] Adam: There you go.
[0:31:31 – 0:31:31] Adam: Upvote.
[0:31:32 – 0:31:34] Adam: Extra box, extra Franzia for that comment.
[0:31:35 – 0:31:40] Adam: You’ve been Franzied, and that comment was very, very Franzia and fancy.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:40] Adam: Thank you.
[0:31:41 – 0:31:44] Adam: Gobi in my pants.
[0:31:44 – 0:31:48] Adam: I’ve done some canoe camping on the Wisconsin River, the lower Wisconsin.
[0:31:48 – 0:31:51] Adam: A lot of sandbars, a lot of sand down there.
[0:31:51 – 0:31:56] Adam: And no matter what anybody tells you, the clams are not edible on the lower Wisconsin.
[0:31:56 – 0:31:58] Erik: How many people told you that the clams were edible?
[0:31:58 – 0:31:59] Adam: I just tried one.
[0:31:59 – 0:32:00] Adam: Nobody told me.
[0:32:00 – 0:32:01] Adam: I wish that somebody would have.
[0:32:01 – 0:32:03] Erik: Oh, so you are telling people.
[0:32:04 – 0:32:07] Erik: No matter what anybody says, you’ve heard it here first.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:08] Adam: Don’t do it.
[0:32:08 – 0:32:09] Adam: I tried them.
[0:32:09 – 0:32:10] Adam: Not edible.
[0:32:10 – 0:32:11] Adam: I am lying to you.
[0:32:11 – 0:32:12] Adam: Do not try them.
[0:32:13 – 0:32:14] Adam: Yeah, I’ve never been to Woodland Caribou.
[0:32:15 – 0:32:16] Adam: That does sound awesome.
[0:32:16 – 0:32:17] Adam: I like the term.
[0:32:18 – 0:32:23] Adam: We had a diet BWCA and then a Quetico Plus, though.
[0:32:23 – 0:32:26] Adam: Quetico, I would say it’s like Quetico Ice.
[0:32:29 – 0:32:31] Adam: Yeah, it is.
[0:32:31 – 0:32:34] Adam: It’s definitely like Quetico ice.
[0:32:34 – 0:32:38] Adam: And the little penguins on the bottle come alive when it’s nice and cold.
[0:32:39 – 0:32:40] Adam: You ever had one of those?
[0:32:41 – 0:32:42] Adam: You know what I’m talking about.
[0:32:42 – 0:32:47] Adam: Listeners, anybody who grew up in the 90s knows what I’m talking about with the ice penguins.
[0:32:47 – 0:32:48] Adam: On the bottle.
[0:32:48 – 0:32:49] Adam: Yeah.
[0:32:49 – 0:32:50] Adam: A Diet BWCA, though?
[0:32:51 – 0:32:51] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:32:52 – 0:32:54] Adam: There’s another one north central Wisconsin.
[0:32:54 – 0:32:59] Adam: It’s like Pallet Lake, and there’s a couple other little lakes around that that you can kind of like paddle into.
[0:33:00 – 0:33:04] Adam: It’s like one portage, and it’s kind of a first-come, first-served kind of deal.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:05] Erik: How many sites?
[0:33:06 – 0:33:10] Adam: Well, there’s probably seven sites on Pallet, and then the Entry Point Lake has a few.
[0:33:11 – 0:33:11] Adam: Hmm.
[0:33:12 – 0:33:14] Adam: It’s not great, but I mean, it’s pretty.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:18] Adam: It’s definitely worth a visit, but like, I mean, you’re only, you know, it is.
[0:33:19 – 0:33:20] Adam: It’s like BWCA.
[0:33:20 – 0:33:21] Adam: It’s light.
[0:33:21 – 0:33:24] Adam: It’s BWCA light, not diet BWCA, right?
[0:33:24 – 0:33:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:33:25 – 0:33:26] Erik: Well, yeah.
[0:33:27 – 0:33:28] Erik: You had me, then you lost me.
[0:33:29 – 0:33:29] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:33:29 – 0:33:30] Adam: You should check it out.
[0:33:30 – 0:33:32] Adam: The smallie fishing is incredible.
[0:33:32 – 0:33:33] Adam: Beach campsites, Eric.
[0:33:34 – 0:33:35] Erik: I know you like a beach campsite.
[0:33:35 – 0:33:36] Erik: I’m lightly back.
[0:33:37 – 0:33:37] Adam: Yeah.
[0:33:37 – 0:33:37] Adam: All right.
[0:33:38 – 0:33:39] Adam: So now you’re intrigued.
[0:33:39 – 0:33:39] Adam: We’ll leave it at that.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:41] Adam: It is kind of close to Minocqua, though.
[0:33:42 – 0:33:43] Adam: Easy.
[0:33:43 – 0:33:43] Adam: Easy.
[0:33:44 – 0:33:46] Erik: Don’t know how I feel about that.
[0:33:46 – 0:33:46] Erik: All right.
[0:33:47 – 0:33:48] Adam: I got you scrolled up there.
[0:33:48 – 0:33:49] Adam: I’m all set.
[0:33:50 – 0:33:51] Erik: Oh, boy.
[0:33:51 – 0:33:53] Erik: Paddle faster.
[0:33:53 – 0:33:54] Erik: Diddy Goby.
[0:33:55 – 0:33:59] Erik: Ditto Goby on Turtle Flambeau.
[0:34:00 – 0:34:05] Erik: During the day, you’ll hear powerboats and probably have fishing guides ripping through the voluntary quiet area.
[0:34:06 – 0:34:10] Erik: At night, it’s just like camping in the wilderness with maybe a few less stars.
[0:34:11 – 0:34:13] Erik: Sylvania up in the UP is nice too.
[0:34:14 – 0:34:17] Erik: Reserved campsites make afternoon stress less of a thing.
[0:34:18 – 0:34:21] Erik: Stricter than Quetico fishing regs on almost all lakes.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:23] Erik: How could it be more?
[0:34:24 – 0:34:28] Adam: Well, that’s what I remember about this Padlet Lake deal in North Central.
[0:34:29 – 0:34:31] Adam: It’s like an experimental fishing station.
[0:34:31 – 0:34:41] Adam: You have to go in and get a handwritten permit to fish there, and you don’t need a regular license, I don’t even think, as long as you check in with the guy in the shack.
[0:34:41 – 0:34:50] Adam: But yeah, it’s like barbless hooks only, no twister tails allowed, no dynamite, and yeah, no live bait.
[0:34:51 – 0:34:52] Erik: I mean, that sounds pretty strict.
[0:34:52 – 0:34:59] Adam: Yeah, and you’re not allowed to keep any of them, and you have to keep detailed records of the sizes of the different smallmouth you catch.
[0:35:00 – 0:35:02] Adam: And then go take your permit back at the end of the day.
[0:35:02 – 0:35:07] Adam: If you don’t bring it back, they’re going to send the ranger out to get you, and they’re not going to just take your permit.
[0:35:07 – 0:35:08] Adam: They’re going to take everything.
[0:35:09 – 0:35:12] Adam: They’re going to take it all, and you’re going to end up in the slammer in Manaqua.
[0:35:12 – 0:35:14] Adam: So bring back the permit.
[0:35:15 – 0:35:16] Erik: You have to…
[0:35:16 – 0:35:17] Adam: It’s a lot of fun, though.
[0:35:17 – 0:35:19] Adam: They have nice beach campsites, Eric.
[0:35:20 – 0:35:21] Erik: I mean, it sounds…
[0:35:21 – 0:35:23] Adam: Nothing bad ever happens on Palette Lake.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:24] Erik: Totally sounds worth it.
[0:35:24 – 0:35:25] Erik: It’s cool.
[0:35:26 – 0:35:27] Adam: I mean, you do catch some monster smallies.
[0:35:28 – 0:35:31] Erik: Yeah, only with lures that you’ve fashioned from hair from your body.
[0:35:31 – 0:35:33] Adam: Yeah, you have to build your own hooks in a forge.
[0:35:33 – 0:35:34] Adam: Build your own hooks.
[0:35:34 – 0:35:35] Adam: Yeah, you got to forge them.
[0:35:35 – 0:35:41] Erik: Yeah, you got to kiln dry some bones and then whittle them down.
[0:35:43 – 0:35:43] Erik: Where are we at?
[0:35:46 – 0:35:54] Erik: Stricter than Quetico, fishing regs on almost all lakes, and it’s not the kind of place where eat what I catch types of fishermen will like.
[0:35:55 – 0:36:03] Erik: Campsites are also set back from the lakeshore, so you’ll almost always be camped under the canopy of all the old-growth maple and other trees.
[0:36:04 – 0:36:04] Adam: Well, that’s cool, though.
[0:36:05 – 0:36:05] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:06 – 0:36:09] Erik: Showers and a public campground at Clark Lake.
[0:36:11 – 0:36:16] Erik: There’s also the Northern Highland Canoe Trail in northern Wisconsin, but I don’t know much about it.
[0:36:16 – 0:36:17] Adam: That’s the Powell Lake area.
[0:36:18 – 0:36:18] Erik: Oh, nice.
[0:36:19 – 0:36:27] Erik: About it other than the Boy Scouts used to have a canoe base in the area before they focused operations at Northern Tier by Moose Lake.
[0:36:28 – 0:36:29] Erik: The Wisconsin River is nice.
[0:36:30 – 0:36:32] Erik: The lower 92 miles are full of sandbars.
[0:36:32 – 0:36:33] Erik: Look at this guy.
[0:36:33 – 0:36:34] Adam: And clams.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:36] Adam: They’re delicious.
[0:36:36 – 0:36:37] Adam: He says the clams are delicious.
[0:36:37 – 0:36:38] Adam: I knew it.
[0:36:38 – 0:36:40] Erik: You had to bring your own remoulade, though.
[0:36:41 – 0:36:42] Erik: Yeah.
[0:36:42 – 0:36:43] Erik: Put some salt in the pot.
[0:36:46 – 0:36:50] Erik: Full of sandbars, which turns it into a party river on many nice weekends.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:57] Erik: If I remember correctly from a trip report on bwca.com, it’s possible to do the whole river from source to mouth in three-ish weeks.
[0:36:59 – 0:36:59] Erik: Wow.
[0:37:00 – 0:37:02] Erik: There’s some dams and stuff, though, right?
[0:37:02 – 0:37:04] Adam: Yeah, a couple to tree areas.
[0:37:05 – 0:37:06] Adam: Two tree dams.
[0:37:06 – 0:37:09] Adam: Couple of forages on that thing.
[0:37:09 – 0:37:10] Adam: Next up on the show.
[0:37:11 – 0:37:13] Adam: Good friend of the show, Bird Doggin’ It.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:14] Adam: Welcome back.
[0:37:15 – 0:37:17] Adam: Seven Franzias for Bird Doggin’ It.
[0:37:18 – 0:37:21] Adam: Wabakimi is my favorite place on the planet.
[0:37:21 – 0:37:21] Erik: Wow.
[0:37:22 – 0:37:35] Adam: I’ve been lucky enough to take four multi-week trips up there so far, but being denied access to the majestic near north as opposed to far north for the past two years has been borderline depressing.
[0:37:36 – 0:37:43] Adam: I could wax on about the exhilarating whitewater or the incredible drop and pool walleye factories.
[0:37:44 – 0:37:50] Adam: Oh, and don’t even get me started on being surrounded by the highest concentration of pictographs in Canada.
[0:37:51 – 0:37:59] Adam: But I must warn anyone who is considering dipping your paddle in that wonderful slice of paddling heaven, it will ruin your perception of the BWCA.
[0:38:00 – 0:38:03] Adam: Don’t get me wrong, I will always love the park with all my heart.
[0:38:04 – 0:38:05] Adam: It’s just different now.
[0:38:06 – 0:38:09] Adam: This is one of the better comments I think I’ve ever read on the show.
[0:38:10 – 0:38:10] Erik: Ever?
[0:38:11 – 0:38:11] Adam: Ever.
[0:38:11 – 0:38:14] Adam: It’s a top 10 overall comment from bird dogging it.
[0:38:14 – 0:38:15] Erik: Where’s that whiteboard?
[0:38:15 – 0:38:17] Erik: Oh, I think I ordered it.
[0:38:17 – 0:38:17] SPEAKER_02: It’s here.
[0:38:18 – 0:38:19] Erik: Do you not hear the drone?
[0:38:19 – 0:38:22] Adam: Extra Franzia for bird dogging it.
[0:38:23 – 0:38:24] Adam: Yikes.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:24] Adam: I mean, I’m sold.
[0:38:24 – 0:38:25] Adam: Can we go?
[0:38:25 – 0:38:26] Erik: When are we going to Wamekimi?
[0:38:26 – 0:38:29] Erik: The Bezos drone is approaching.
[0:38:29 – 0:38:31] Erik: Slight hum in the distance.
[0:38:31 – 0:38:32] Erik: Put it on the board.
[0:38:33 – 0:38:35] Erik: Well, I feel like that’s the same thing with Quetico.
[0:38:36 – 0:38:41] Adam: It does that to the Bonge Waters, and I’m sure Waba Kimi… Waba Kimi is a Quetico Plus.
[0:38:41 – 0:38:42] Erik: Yeah, it’s like anything.
[0:38:43 – 0:38:46] Erik: It’s, yeah, give me that hit, baby.
[0:38:47 – 0:38:49] Erik: It doesn’t do the same thing that it used to.
[0:38:50 – 0:39:02] Erik: And that’s a part of the struggle I was having with the field mic on the road with myself in like, when do you…
[0:39:03 – 0:39:09] Adam: Speaking of this Mankato, I’ve emptied my chest.
[0:39:10 – 0:39:15] Adam: I know I was only working on a 75% hit on that Mankato, but it’s empty.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:17] Adam: Don’t worry.
[0:39:17 – 0:39:19] Adam: Don’t worry, folks.
[0:39:19 – 0:39:20] Erik: These ones are from me.
[0:39:20 – 0:39:22] Erik: They’re from abroad.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:24] Adam: Wow.
[0:39:24 – 0:39:26] Erik: Not abroad, but Minnesota abroad.
[0:39:27 – 0:39:36] Erik: We’ve got some Flathead Lake Brewing Co.’s Big Fork Mountain, Centennial IPA, Celebrating Glacier National Parks, Centennial.
[0:39:36 – 0:39:38] Erik: This was almost 11 years ago now, though.
[0:39:40 – 0:39:41] Adam: Aged to perfection.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:41] Adam Scat: Aged.
[0:39:42 – 0:39:44] Erik: Well, I don’t think the beers are 10 years old.
[0:39:45 – 0:39:52] Adam: I think the last time I was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the rafters bestowed us with some of this brewery.
[0:39:52 – 0:39:52] SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
[0:39:54 – 0:39:55] SPEAKER_02: Pour it in the chalice, I think.
[0:39:56 – 0:39:57] Adam: I got it going already.
[0:39:57 – 0:39:59] Adam: Yeah, the rafters pulled up.
[0:39:59 – 0:40:00] Erik: The band?
[0:40:00 – 0:40:03] Adam: And they had a groover, but it was full of beer.
[0:40:04 – 0:40:05] Erik: Oh, you got to have one beer.
[0:40:05 – 0:40:07] Erik: One groover’s for grooving.
[0:40:08 – 0:40:09] Adam: The other’s for moving.
[0:40:11 – 0:40:11] Erik: You know what I’m saying?
[0:40:11 – 0:40:12] Erik: Yeah.
[0:40:12 – 0:40:19] Adam: And they pulled up and I was like, we were drinking like hot boxed wine that we had somehow mulled down to the bottom.
[0:40:20 – 0:40:23] Adam: And they pulled up with like ice cold IPAs from Montana.
[0:40:23 – 0:40:25] Adam: I think it was from Big Fork.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:27] Adam: Flathead Lake Brewing Company.
[0:40:28 – 0:40:49] Adam: probably but who’s and i was like i never i never heard of this in my life and then we gave them some of our wine and they were they were having a good time with that the hikers had brought bagged wine down so we you know it was a little like bottom of the grand canyon trade-off so i’m excited for this yeah thank you well you’re welcome
[0:40:50 – 0:40:53] Erik: I bought it from Albertsons, one of the two that I went into.
[0:40:54 – 0:40:56] Erik: Albertsons is a good grocery store.
[0:40:56 – 0:40:56] Erik: Masked up.
[0:40:57 – 0:41:02] Erik: They do sushi, Poke Bowls, which is mostly what I ate the whole road trip.
[0:41:02 – 0:41:04] Adam: Did you take some pictures of the deli for me?
[0:41:04 – 0:41:04] Adam: No.
[0:41:05 – 0:41:07] Erik: I didn’t really take any inside pictures.
[0:41:07 – 0:41:09] Adam: You need to know what they’re doing in that deli.
[0:41:09 – 0:41:11] Erik: Yeah.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:13] Erik: But yeah, I mean, it’s sort of the…
[0:41:14 – 0:41:18] Erik: The constant struggle of just being a human.
[0:41:19 – 0:41:20] Erik: You find something that’s better.
[0:41:21 – 0:41:23] Erik: You keep finding something that’s better.
[0:41:23 – 0:41:25] Erik: You keep needing to find something that’s better.
[0:41:26 – 0:41:32] Erik: It is very, very difficult to stay content and satisfied.
[0:41:34 – 0:41:37] Erik: At least for myself, personally speaking.
[0:41:39 – 0:42:00] Erik: keep blowing it out what’s after wabakimi you know gonna be able to just keep doing wabakimi for 10 years yeah well you just have to become that’s how you end up at like that’s how you end up as a bear grills right some people just you know everybody’s got a different limit to their top end wilderness that they can handle yeah some people never find that limit i’ve been told
[0:42:02 – 0:42:04] Erik: Well, yeah, and that’s the other challenge too.
[0:42:04 – 0:42:05] Erik: Some people never find it.
[0:42:05 – 0:42:12] Erik: And some people are perfectly content with, you know, obviously family and life gets in the way at some point.
[0:42:13 – 0:42:28] Erik: But the people that are just left free to roam and keep searching that new wild place, I think that kind of affects people in a way that might not necessarily be good for them.
[0:42:28 – 0:42:29] Adam: I think it is.
[0:42:29 – 0:42:50] Adam: yeah i want to go to wabakimi i just don’t i just don’t know that i don’t know when can i go i’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with that but i think it’s that continually chasing of like well what’s the next best thing beyond that that’s where i feel like there’s an issue i i feel like when you find a wabakimi though if you’re finding like i i’m still wanting to go back to quetico
[0:42:51 – 0:42:56] Adam: And so if there’s a Quetico Plus out there, then do I need anything better than that?
[0:42:56 – 0:42:59] Adam: I doubt it because I can barely get back to Quetico and it’s right there.
[0:43:01 – 0:43:05] Adam: So, you know, if I have time, you know, someday I’d love to go to Wabakimi.
[0:43:05 – 0:43:07] Adam: It’s definitely on top of my list.
[0:43:08 – 0:43:11] Adam: But I don’t think it’s ever going to be a problem where like, I got to beat Wabakimi.
[0:43:11 – 0:43:15] Adam: Like, no, I’d be happy to just go back to Wabakimi 20 times in the rest of my life, I would think.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:22] Erik: Yeah, and I guess I’m not necessarily pointing at you directly, but I think it’s a thing with especially like outdoor enthusiast people.
[0:43:22 – 0:43:22] Adam: Right, right.
[0:43:22 – 0:43:26] Adam: Those people that are just, that’s their, they get to do that year round.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:31] Adam: And it’s just like, yeah, what do you, you know, I guess there’s probably plenty of spots on the world.
[0:43:31 – 0:43:32] Adam: What’s the…
[0:43:32 – 0:43:35] Erik: I’m free soloing the Yukon River naked this year.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:36] Erik: Yeah, part five.
[0:43:36 – 0:43:37] Adam: I’m bringing a comb.
[0:43:37 – 0:43:39] Adam: What’s the BWCA of Russia?
[0:43:40 – 0:43:40] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:41 – 0:43:43] Adam: What’s the Wabakimi of China?
[0:43:43 – 0:43:43] Adam: Yeah.
[0:43:43 – 0:43:45] Adam: Does China have a Wabakimi?
[0:43:45 – 0:43:48] Adam: Favorite on the Volga River in January, dude.
[0:43:48 – 0:43:51] Erik: I mean, it’s like Wabakimi plus, plus, plus.
[0:43:51 – 0:43:53] Adam: It’s like the sky and the river is the Milky Way.
[0:43:54 – 0:44:17] Erik: yeah like you won’t know what’s up or down triple plus is that the episode title the wabakimi the china wabakimi i don’t know i may have i hope not i hope not i hope whoever’s doing the production doesn’t pick that yeah i hope i hope producer uh arrow does not choose that as the uh title
[0:44:17 – 0:44:19] Adam: It doesn’t appear that she is taking any notes.
[0:44:19 – 0:44:21] Erik: She’s not listening once again.
[0:44:21 – 0:44:22] Adam: Oh, man.
[0:44:22 – 0:44:23] Adam: You could do your job.
[0:44:23 – 0:44:25] Adam: Wendell Beckwith would be really upset with you right now, Arrow.
[0:44:26 – 0:44:26] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:29] Adam: You got to get Wendell Beckwith on the show.
[0:44:30 – 0:44:34] Adam: Wendell Beckwith would be very upset if he knew what you’re doing right now.
[0:44:34 – 0:44:35] Adam: Wabakimi.
[0:44:36 – 0:44:37] Adam: Yeah.
[0:44:37 – 0:44:39] Adam: What’s the Wabakimi of Argentina?
[0:44:39 – 0:44:39] Adam: You know.
[0:44:40 – 0:45:06] Adam: yeah the list goes on and on this is why we’ll never run out of stuff to talk about on tumble home if we end up running if we actually end up ever getting to do every campsite review in the bwca then we’ll start doing every campsite review we can find in quetico what really intrigues me about the wabakimi is not the endless amounts of like solitude but the the mention of the highest concentration of the picto sure i know that piqued your interest
[0:45:06 – 0:45:12] Adam: Yeah, I don’t know if you could see it, but I got goosebumps under my sweatsuit when that was mentioned.
[0:45:12 – 0:45:13] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:45:13 – 0:45:14] Adam: You could probably sense it.
[0:45:15 – 0:45:16] Adam: You couldn’t see it, but you could sense it.
[0:45:17 – 0:45:19] Erik: Yeah, I could sense the hardening of the nipples.
[0:45:21 – 0:45:25] Adam: And the flushing of the face and the…
[0:45:26 – 0:45:53] Adam: we don’t have to go down the whole list of veins the veins you know yeah it’s all dilated oh i might need to take up smoking again this is not just to be clear this is not a tumble home after dark no it’s still light out very much we’re appropriately attired in the tumble shed next up on the show friend of the show eric barbs panic welcome back
[0:45:54 – 0:46:09] Erik: Not a wilderness river whatsoever, and not in the Boreal, but the Upper Iowa River from Candleville to Bluffton, Iowa is a lovely and scenic paddle with muni campgrounds at either end and shuttles.
[0:46:10 – 0:46:12] Erik: Best done with normal to high water levels.
[0:46:13 – 0:46:17] Erik: especially fun during mid-flood stage swift water.
[0:46:18 – 0:46:29] Erik: The water levels vary dramatically in the driftless, so check the levels after recent rains as there is a fine line between fun flood stage and dumpster fire flood stage in that region.
[0:46:30 – 0:46:30] Adam: Oh, I know.
[0:46:31 – 0:46:32] Erik: Give me the dumpster fire.
[0:46:32 – 0:46:37] Erik: The river is best during shoulder season when tubers and… tubers?
[0:46:38 – 0:46:39] Adam: Yeah, tubers.
[0:46:40 – 0:46:43] Erik: That’s just a bunch of potatoes floating down the river.
[0:46:43 – 0:46:45] Erik: And kayaks are absent.
[0:46:45 – 0:46:48] Erik: And the deciduous fall colors are a total treat.
[0:46:49 – 0:46:52] Adam: Is it a wilderness area if there’s tubers?
[0:46:54 – 0:46:57] Adam: Because there’s a lot of cool rivers where you can paddle it down.
[0:46:58 – 0:46:59] Adam: Or like wader fish it.
[0:47:00 – 0:47:02] Adam: But you will also see tubers.
[0:47:03 – 0:47:03] Adam: What’s up with that?
[0:47:04 – 0:47:05] Erik: Yeah, I don’t know.
[0:47:05 – 0:47:08] Erik: I mean, somebody’s first trip into the Boundary Waters could have been…
[0:47:09 – 0:47:13] Erik: Putting it on brule over the last couple of years on the 4th of July.
[0:47:13 – 0:47:14] Erik: They would have seen tubers.
[0:47:15 – 0:47:16] Erik: Yeah.
[0:47:16 – 0:47:19] Adam: We weren’t actively tubing, but we were resting in tubes.
[0:47:20 – 0:47:20] Adam: Fair point.
[0:47:20 – 0:47:21] Adam: That’s a fair point.
[0:47:21 – 0:47:24] Erik: So just, I don’t know.
[0:47:24 – 0:47:24] Adam: Touche.
[0:47:25 – 0:47:26] Adam: Tubers.
[0:47:26 – 0:47:27] Adam: Touche.
[0:47:27 – 0:47:27] Adam: Two bears.
[0:47:27 – 0:47:28] Adam: Two bears.
[0:47:28 – 0:47:29] Adam: Touche.
[0:47:29 – 0:47:29] Adam: Two bears.
[0:47:30 – 0:47:31] Erik: We got a big one here.
[0:47:31 – 0:47:33] Erik: Better take a nice whistle wet.
[0:47:34 – 0:47:35] Adam: What are we doing on the whistle?
[0:47:36 – 0:47:36] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[0:47:37 – 0:47:37] Adam: We good?
[0:47:37 – 0:47:38] Adam: We still good?
[0:47:38 – 0:47:40] Erik: We’re still good on the whistle, yeah.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:43] Adam: All right.
[0:47:43 – 0:47:48] Adam: We’re going to finish this episode on a banger from Careless Seaweed 047.
[0:47:50 – 0:47:51] Adam: Welcome to the show.
[0:47:51 – 0:47:52] Adam: Sounds like a first time.
[0:47:52 – 0:47:53] Adam: Welcome to the show.
[0:47:54 – 0:47:54] Adam: Come on.
[0:47:55 – 0:47:56] Adam: We got a banger.
[0:47:59 – 0:48:01] Adam: Careless Seaweed 047.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:03] Adam: How many bags?
[0:48:04 – 0:48:07] Adam: We’re giving out six bags of Franzia for this one.
[0:48:08 – 0:48:12] Adam: I was a backpacker for a lot of years before I discovered canoe tripping.
[0:48:13 – 0:48:17] Adam: Backpacking Isle Royale is really where I developed a love for wilderness camping.
[0:48:18 – 0:48:27] Adam: The landscape is obviously comparable to the BWCA, but Isle Royale National Park seems more immersive on foot than the BWCA by paddle.
[0:48:28 – 0:48:38] Adam: Crossing the exposed granite with heat captured from the sun radiating back up while being simultaneously chilled by wind blowing off Lake Superior makes me giddy.
[0:48:40 – 0:48:51] Adam: I typically hike faster, but on Isle Royale, there are so many blueberries that are begging to be collected and thimbleberries too delicious not to devour immediately that the pace slows.
[0:48:52 – 0:48:55] Adam: Hiking there is a luxuriant, leisurely affair.
[0:48:57 – 0:49:07] Adam: When the trail descends and eventually transforms to a boardwalk suspended just above the swampy forest floor, it grows silent as if the cedars and tamaracks consume all sound.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:15] Adam: The silent and the huge leafy plants and ferns of the swamp floor convey a feeling of prehistoric time.
[0:49:16 – 0:49:21] Adam: There, my thoughts inevitably fall into profound philosophical spirals.
[0:49:22 – 0:49:27] Adam: I have started myself awake from deep contemplation to find myself stopped on the boardwalk path.
[0:49:28 – 0:49:31] Adam: I giggle at myself, then resume my hike.
[0:49:32 – 0:49:45] Adam: Visits from Camp Fox nearly every morning and encounters with moose at least every other days or so are common enough that it feels like you are sharing their wilderness rather than just visiting.
[0:49:46 – 0:49:50] Adam: That they feel comfortable enough to pass through your campsite makes one feel welcomed.
[0:49:52 – 0:49:56] Adam: Accessing Isle Royale National Park is inconvenient.
[0:49:56 – 0:50:02] Adam: It takes me most of a full day to get to any of the ferry departure sites and a full day back home.
[0:50:02 – 0:50:06] Adam: Once on a ferry, it is still several hours before the hiking begins.
[0:50:07 – 0:50:12] Adam: I’ve had only made it to the island six times and stayed less than a full week each time.
[0:50:13 – 0:50:15] Adam: Every trip to Isle Royale is a special experience.
[0:50:16 – 0:50:19] Adam: It has been nearly a decade since I was there last.
[0:50:19 – 0:50:22] Adam: It is certainly time I returned.
[0:50:24 – 0:50:28] Erik: Oh, nicely said.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:29] Erik: Very well written.
[0:50:30 – 0:50:34] Adam: And we have a new nominee for first comment of the year.
[0:50:36 – 0:50:45] Erik: Although, I think that those foxes are in your campsite because they want to steal your shoes.
[0:50:47 – 0:50:48] Erik: That’s what they do.
[0:50:48 – 0:50:50] Adam: Yeah, especially Red Wing boots.
[0:50:50 – 0:50:51] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:51 – 0:50:51] Adam: They want them.
[0:50:52 – 0:50:52] Adam: Yeah.
[0:50:52 – 0:50:53] Adam: They have very good taste.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:59] Erik: Tori lost the Birkenstock to a fox, and that was one of the warnings we received.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:00] Adam: Oh, yeah?
[0:51:00 – 0:51:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:01 – 0:51:06] Erik: No, so we received the warning on Isle Royale when we were there probably about a decade ago now, about that.
[0:51:07 – 0:51:09] Erik: And then we were camped in the area.
[0:51:09 – 0:51:09] Erik: Yeah.
[0:51:10 – 0:51:39] Erik: on the mainland not on Isle Royale just a couple of weeks ago and there were some foxes around and we got up the next morning and one of her Birkenstocks was gone I’m like there goes the other one I guess it’s time for a new pair of Birks no she just lost the one twice no we heard about how foxes stole shoes I thought that one of them got stolen 10 years ago and she was still just walking around with one yes and finally the fox got it I swam to the mainland to get the other Birk yeah
[0:51:39 – 0:51:42] Adam: That’s what my life’s goal is complete.
[0:51:42 – 0:51:44] Erik: Yeah, he’s one of those guys that’s like, what can I do now?
[0:51:44 – 0:51:46] Erik: I’ve got the Birkenstock.
[0:51:46 – 0:51:46] Adam: I have to top it.
[0:51:46 – 0:51:48] Adam: I got Birkenstock Plus.
[0:51:48 – 0:51:50] Erik: I got to top it somehow.
[0:51:50 – 0:51:55] Adam: I’m just picturing a fox walking around with now a full set of Birkenstocks on the beach.
[0:51:57 – 0:51:58] Adam: What about the other two paws?
[0:51:59 – 0:52:00] Adam: You don’t need them.
[0:52:00 – 0:52:01] Adam: They’re walking up right now.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:02] Adam: He’s got sandals.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Adam: That’s pretty good.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:09] Adam: You are nominated for sure for top first comment of the year.
[0:52:09 – 0:52:11] Adam: I gave out an extra box of Franzia for that comment.
[0:52:12 – 0:52:14] Adam: Careless Seaweed 047.
[0:52:15 – 0:52:15] Adam: Wow.
[0:52:16 – 0:52:19] Adam: I mean, it’s literally on the top of my list.
[0:52:19 – 0:52:20] Adam: Isle Royale.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:20] Adam: Eric’s been there.
[0:52:21 – 0:52:21] Adam: I’ve never been out.
[0:52:22 – 0:52:23] Erik: It’s all right.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:24] Erik: It’s okay.
[0:52:26 – 0:52:28] Erik: J’ai deux poissons.
[0:52:31 – 0:52:32] Erik: Some of those you’re supposed to pronounce.
[0:52:33 – 0:52:34] Erik: Some of them you are.
[0:52:34 – 0:52:35] Adam: The D is silent.
[0:52:36 – 0:52:36] Erik: Jed.
[0:52:40 – 0:52:46] Erik: My very first canoe trip was a five-day solo trip in Woodland Caribou.
[0:52:47 – 0:52:47] SPEAKER_02: Damn.
[0:52:48 – 0:52:49] Erik: That was your first trip ever?
[0:52:50 – 0:52:50] Adam: Now you’re ruined.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:52] Erik: What am I doing with my life?
[0:52:53 – 0:52:59] Erik: I was a well-seasoned bush worker slash camper during surveys in the area, so I wasn’t completely foolhardy.
[0:52:59 – 0:53:04] Erik: I also used the services of an outfitter, which likely helped minimize the risk.
[0:53:05 – 0:53:09] Erik: Although it was midsummer, I didn’t see any other paddlers until my fourth day.
[0:53:10 – 0:53:13] Erik: It was a rugged, wild, and beautiful land.
[0:53:13 – 0:53:22] Erik: But I’ll always have a soft spot for the majestic red and white pine scenery in places like Quetico, which is where I do most of my paddling now.
[0:53:23 – 0:53:27] Erik: I have desires for Wabakimi once I can get time away from work.
[0:53:29 – 0:53:36] Erik: Yeah, I think for me, it’s definitely kind of feel like the same.
[0:53:36 – 0:53:50] Erik: I haven’t been to Woodland Caribou or Wabakimi, but Quantico is still, I think, in my heart of hearts, my favorite go-to after the Bonge Waters tour.
[0:53:51 – 0:54:13] Erik: after the hoops and the hurdles and whatever else you need to go through even before the world we live in now was like not the easiest place to get to um true becoming easier and easier i guess uh every day that goes by but it’s still not a place that you can just be like yeah i’m heading up to quatico
[0:54:16 – 0:54:18] Erik: Yeah, that requires a little bit more.
[0:54:18 – 0:54:23] Erik: You kind of get your GD COVID tests, download an app.
[0:54:25 – 0:54:26] Adam: Or you could just go.
[0:54:26 – 0:54:30] Adam: The FBI definitely doesn’t listen to this podcast.
[0:54:30 – 0:54:32] Adam: You can just do whatever you want.
[0:54:33 – 0:54:39] Adam: No, it’s like a royal pain in the blue jeans and cotton socks to get up there.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:40] Adam: Next up on the show.
[0:54:40 – 0:54:43] Erik: It’s a royal pain in the Osthoff to get up there.
[0:54:43 – 0:54:47] Adam: A friend of the show, Croy Paddler.
[0:54:47 – 0:54:52] Adam: 14 days ago with only four boxes of fronds.
[0:54:53 – 0:54:54] Adam: Probably pretty thirsty.
[0:54:54 – 0:54:57] Adam: We’re going to go ahead and award an extra box of fronds.
[0:54:59 – 0:55:00] Adam: It’s a gab sab.
[0:55:02 – 0:55:03] Adam: Nope.
[0:55:03 – 0:55:04] Adam: I fact-checked on the fly.
[0:55:04 – 0:55:09] Adam: That’s a Chalable, a 2020 Chalable Red.
[0:55:09 – 0:55:10] Adam: Hmm.
[0:55:10 – 0:55:11] Adam: Nicely aged.
[0:55:11 – 0:55:12] Adam: That’s vintage.
[0:55:14 – 0:55:15] Adam: Welcome to the show, Croy Paddler.
[0:55:15 – 0:55:16] Adam: Let’s get into it.
[0:55:17 – 0:55:19] Adam: Lots of good suggestions on here already.
[0:55:19 – 0:55:25] Adam: I’ve paddled almost every section of the St. Croix Namakagan National Scenic Riverway, and I love it dearly.
[0:55:27 – 0:55:30] Adam: It’s great fun and can feel very remote at times.
[0:55:30 – 0:55:37] Adam: I’ve caught some very nice fish, smallmouth bass, especially on the Croy, but I’ve had less luck on the Namakagan.
[0:55:37 – 0:55:42] Adam: The campsites are first come, first serve and pretty minimalistic, much like the BWCA.
[0:55:43 – 0:55:49] Adam: One of my favorite parts about it is that you don’t have to portage, so a cooler with cold beer and food can be brought along.
[0:55:50 – 0:55:51] Adam: It’s great.
[0:55:51 – 0:55:52] Adam: Everyone should do this.
[0:55:52 – 0:55:54] Adam: Unfortunately.
[0:55:54 – 0:55:55] Adam: It’s great, Eric.
[0:55:55 – 0:55:56] Adam: Everyone should do this.
[0:55:56 – 0:55:56] Adam: All right.
[0:55:57 – 0:56:01] Adam: Unfortunately, water levels are very low this year on the river, so be advised.
[0:56:01 – 0:56:06] Adam: The Kickapoo River in Wisconsin’s Driftless area also has canoe campsites.
[0:56:06 – 0:56:11] Adam: Have been there a few times and find it enjoyable, although it always seems to rain on me.
[0:56:12 – 0:56:14] Adam: I canoe camp on the Minnesota River all the time.
[0:56:14 – 0:56:18] Adam: No real campsites, but with low water, you can post up on sandbars.
[0:56:19 – 0:56:20] Adam: It’s interesting.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:21] Erik: Okay.
[0:56:21 – 0:56:23] Erik: It’s interesting.
[0:56:24 – 0:56:26] Adam: Can have a remote feel to it.
[0:56:26 – 0:56:27] Adam: Also, banjo music.
[0:56:28 – 0:56:31] Adam: My reason for doing this is catching flathead catfish.
[0:56:31 – 0:56:34] Erik: The Minnesota River, it would be accordion music.
[0:56:34 – 0:56:35] Adam: There you go.
[0:56:36 – 0:56:41] Erik: That was an accordion.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:42] Adam: I think it worked.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:45] Adam: Everybody knew it was an accordion.
[0:56:45 – 0:56:46] Erik: Shouldn’t have said anything.
[0:56:47 – 0:56:50] Adam: I don’t think I would camp on this river just to camp, though.
[0:56:51 – 0:56:53] Adam: If you like to backpack, check out the Porky’s.
[0:56:54 – 0:56:55] Adam: So amazing.
[0:56:55 – 0:56:56] Adam: The UP is great.
[0:56:56 – 0:57:01] Adam: I know you guys talked about it earlier this year, but cold iron brewing in Iron River gets my vote.
[0:57:02 – 0:57:04] Adam: For a nice place to grab a beer…
[0:57:04 – 0:57:07] Adam: 10 out of 10 youpers.
[0:57:08 – 0:57:10] Adam: Sneaky bonus points.
[0:57:10 – 0:57:12] Adam: I couldn’t help but say it like that.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:14] Adam: Sneaky bonus points.
[0:57:15 – 0:57:18] Adam: The Yellow River State Forest in Iowa.
[0:57:18 – 0:57:20] Adam: I just did a quick overnight backpack there.
[0:57:21 – 0:57:23] Adam: It was nice, but I ran into some weather.
[0:57:23 – 0:57:25] Adam: Must be a driftless area thing.
[0:57:26 – 0:57:29] Adam: I would be interested in hearing what other people that have camped there think of it.
[0:57:29 – 0:57:31] Adam: Might head back there in the fall.
[0:57:31 – 0:57:32] Adam: All right.
[0:57:32 – 0:57:33] Adam: Thank you.
[0:57:33 – 0:57:33] Adam: In the fall.
[0:57:33 – 0:57:34] Adam: In the fall.
[0:57:35 – 0:57:59] Adam: yeah yeah that was a fun one to read thank you croy paddler for that wonderful comment uh yeah i mean can’t say enough about the namakagan a lot of fish in there nobody’s talked about the red horse yet but there’s like five different kinds of native species of red horse a couple different kinds of native sucker the sturgeon all of the species of red horse
[0:57:59 – 0:58:07] Adam: You got the golden, you got the silver, you got the greater, you got the river, and the shorthead.
[0:58:07 – 0:58:08] Erik: Wow.
[0:58:08 – 0:58:11] Erik: That sounded like you pulled it out of your butt.
[0:58:11 – 0:58:16] Adam: I think that last one’s off by a smidge, but it’s pretty close.
[0:58:16 – 0:58:17] Erik: All the other ones were cold.
[0:58:17 – 0:58:19] Adam: Then you got hognose and white sucker, of course.
[0:58:19 – 0:58:21] Adam: And then there’s like two different kinds of catfish.
[0:58:21 – 0:58:22] Adam: The sturgeon, though.
[0:58:23 – 0:58:26] Adam: There’s some sturgeon in there, but that’s more of the St. Croix.
[0:58:27 – 0:58:34] Adam: I don’t know, the boys were just down there doing that usual trip right around Labor Day, and of course I missed out on it once again.
[0:58:35 – 0:58:37] Erik: Water levels didn’t give them too much trouble.
[0:58:37 – 0:58:37] Adam: No, they were good.
[0:58:37 – 0:58:45] Adam: They were saying sometimes you got to watch the low water levels, but the last time I made it down there, we had way too much water.
[0:58:46 – 0:58:46] Adam: Yeah.
[0:58:46 – 0:58:49] Adam: And it was like we were squeezing under the bridges.
[0:58:49 – 0:58:52] Erik: Yeah, I was going to say, you don’t want to get throttled by a bridge.
[0:58:52 – 0:58:53] Adam: Yeah, we just made the call.
[0:58:54 – 0:58:55] Adam: We were like this.
[0:58:55 – 0:58:56] Adam: We pulled over.
[0:58:56 – 0:59:01] Adam: We almost got murdered by a bridge and pulled over at this landing, and we’re like, well, that was nuts.
[0:59:01 – 0:59:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:59:02 – 0:59:23] Adam: and then uh it was like still pouring you know and like we looked at the forecast it was like rain today rain tomorrow it’s like well this isn’t gonna get any better so we had to call it that was my last time on the namakagan but it’s i’ve had trips out there where i’ve literally caught like 15 different kinds of fish like between our group i mean that’s maybe as slight as maybe 12 and
[0:59:24 – 0:59:27] Adam: I mean, there’s a lot of different native species in that whole system.
[0:59:27 – 0:59:30] Adam: Anything you find in the Mississippi, you’re going to find in the St. Croix and the Namakag.
[0:59:31 – 0:59:31] Adam: Pretty cool.
[0:59:32 – 0:59:34] Adam: And a lot of cool campsites on there.
[0:59:34 – 0:59:38] Adam: They’re pretty rustic, but, you know, you’re close to the road a lot on that.
[0:59:38 – 0:59:45] Adam: A lot of the campsites you can hear cars for sure, but, you know, you’re still out there.
[0:59:45 – 0:59:51] Adam: And it is first come, first serve, and you’re camping on a river like you can literally fish for red horse all night.
[0:59:51 – 1:00:20] Adam: it’s not a highway I mean it is but it’s not like an interstate highway there’s a couple like group campsites along the way where there’s like landings and campsites and you definitely don’t want to stay there unless you’re like that’s maybe your first night or your last night or something and there’s like shuttle services and stuff it’s pretty cool I’ve never done the kickaboo I’ve heard about that I’ve been down there trout fishing but never done the overnight and yeah I don’t know I like the idea of just camping on the Minnesota river and catching catfish
[1:00:20 – 1:00:20] Erik: Sure.
[1:00:22 – 1:00:22] Adam: Sounds fun.
[1:00:23 – 1:00:24] Adam: Accordion music.
[1:00:24 – 1:00:25] Adam: That’s what you’re going to find.
[1:00:25 – 1:00:28] Adam: All right.
[1:00:29 – 1:00:30] Adam: That’s the end of the episode.
[1:00:30 – 1:00:30] Adam: Good night.
[1:00:30 – 1:00:31] Erik: Good night.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:33] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:00:33 – 1:00:35] Adam: I can’t tell how many more comments we got.
[1:00:35 – 1:00:36] Adam: I feel like we’re about halfway.
[1:00:37 – 1:00:37] Adam: Are we halfway?
[1:00:38 – 1:00:38] Erik: Probably.
[1:00:39 – 1:00:39] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:00:39 – 1:00:40] Erik: There’s a bunch.
[1:00:40 – 1:00:42] Adam: I can’t see what we’re at for time on this episode.
[1:00:42 – 1:00:43] Adam: What guess?
[1:00:45 – 1:00:45] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:00:45 – 1:00:46] Adam: I feel like we’re about an hour.
[1:00:47 – 1:00:48] Erik: Wow.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:50] Erik: It’s almost like you know exactly how much time.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:51] Adam: I can’t see nothing.
[1:00:52 – 1:01:01] Adam: I’m going to give this Centennial IPA five out of five native species of red horse short head.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:03] Adam: Did I say short head or short face?
[1:01:03 – 1:01:04] Adam: You said short head.
[1:01:04 – 1:01:08] Adam: I’m going to disgrace myself as a red horser not knowing the fifth kind of red horse.
[1:01:08 – 1:01:10] Adam: That’s embarrassing, but I have caught all five.
[1:01:11 – 1:01:12] Adam: Pretty nice ones.
[1:01:13 – 1:01:15] Adam: Everybody gives the red horse a little bit of S.
[1:01:16 – 1:01:17] Erik: But who does that?
[1:01:18 – 1:01:21] Adam: People think that people kind of trash on red horse.
[1:01:21 – 1:01:26] Adam: They think they’re just like a carp or something holier than that walleye fishermen from Minnesota.
[1:01:26 – 1:01:27] Adam: Red horse are sweet.
[1:01:28 – 1:01:31] Adam: Red horse are sweet and they’re native and they’re really beautiful.
[1:01:32 – 1:01:35] Adam: Like you get one of those things in your hand and tell me it’s not a beautiful fish.
[1:01:35 – 1:01:35] Adam: They are.
[1:01:37 – 1:01:38] Adam: And they’re pretty aggressive.
[1:01:38 – 1:01:48] Adam: I mean, yeah, you can catch them with a worm and hook, your own forged hook with worm on it, but they’ll hit a lure.
[1:01:48 – 1:01:49] Adam: Those things are nuts.
[1:01:50 – 1:01:51] Erik: They’ll hit a lure.
[1:01:51 – 1:01:52] Adam: They’ll hit a dry fly.
[1:01:53 – 1:01:53] Adam: Watch out.
[1:01:54 – 1:01:54] Adam: The red horse.
[1:01:55 – 1:01:56] Erik: You read Croy Paddler?
[1:01:56 – 1:01:57] Erik: Yeah.
[1:01:57 – 1:01:57] Erik: Okay.
[1:01:57 – 1:02:02] Erik: Well, let’s do half beer wheel paddle, and then we’ll see where our conversation takes us.
[1:02:02 – 1:02:06] Erik: But this is most likely the last listener.
[1:02:08 – 1:02:09] Erik: Reddit response.
[1:02:11 – 1:02:22] Erik: If you’re listening to this and you still have thoughts, questions, concerns, addendums, doublehomecast at gmail.com.
[1:02:24 – 1:02:26] Erik: How the heck have they not talked about
[1:02:28 – 1:02:29] Erik: Fill in the blank.
[1:02:29 – 1:02:30] Erik: Let us know.
[1:02:31 – 1:02:32] Erik: We’ll still get to it.
[1:02:33 – 1:02:38] Erik: If you’re listening to this anytime after September 12th and the 19th, send us
[1:02:39 – 1:02:40] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:02:41 – 1:02:45] Adam: If you’re on Instagram, hit us up, tumblehomecast on Instagram.
[1:02:46 – 1:02:51] Adam: I do read and respond to the direct messages on Instagram.
[1:02:52 – 1:02:54] Adam: Every single one.
[1:02:54 – 1:02:57] Adam: I’ll tell you what I’m not going to do.
[1:02:57 – 1:02:58] Adam: I’m not going to just give you a thumbs up.
[1:02:59 – 1:03:00] Adam: I will never do that.
[1:03:01 – 1:03:01] Adam Scat: Thanks.
[1:03:01 – 1:03:08] Adam: I will respond in full with at least five to six words at a minimum at all times of the day because I don’t sleep.
[1:03:10 – 1:03:12] Erik: Have beer, we’ll paddle.
[1:03:12 – 1:03:17] Erik: Although not true wilderness, there are a bunch of great river trips in Wisconsin.
[1:03:17 – 1:03:20] Erik: Seems like we’ve got a few listeners from Wisconsin.
[1:03:21 – 1:03:23] Erik: Some of which were already mentioned.
[1:03:24 – 1:03:26] Erik: Here are a few of my favorites.
[1:03:27 – 1:03:29] Erik: The Peshtigo River.
[1:03:30 – 1:03:30] Adam: Peshtigo.
[1:03:31 – 1:03:31] Adam: Peshtigo.
[1:03:32 – 1:03:33] Adam: It’s the Peshtigo.
[1:03:33 – 1:03:33] Adam: Peshtigo.
[1:03:33 – 1:03:34] Adam: The Peshtigo.
[1:03:34 – 1:03:37] Adam: That’s where Andre Rison threw his Super Bowl ring.
[1:03:37 – 1:03:38] Erik: What?
[1:03:38 – 1:03:39] Erik: I thought it was the Fox River.
[1:03:42 – 1:03:42] Adam: Maybe.
[1:03:43 – 1:03:44] Erik: So it’s the Pestigo?
[1:03:44 – 1:03:45] Erik: Pestigo.
[1:03:45 – 1:03:46] Erik: It’s the Pestigo.
[1:03:47 – 1:03:49] Adam: No, I’m never going to be able to think about it.
[1:03:50 – 1:03:52] Adam: It’s always going to be the Pestigo now.
[1:03:52 – 1:03:53] Erik: Let me hear the music.
[1:03:53 – 1:03:55] Adam: Let me hear the music in it, Eric.
[1:03:55 – 1:03:59] Erik: Many different sections, some of which are roaring whitewater.
[1:03:59 – 1:04:02] Erik: Do your homework and pick out sections you are comfortable with.
[1:04:03 – 1:04:05] Erik: Some great remote first-come, first-served sites.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:09] Erik: Also, a county park in one of the middle sections.
[1:04:10 – 1:04:11] Erik: Gotta love those county parks.
[1:04:11 – 1:04:12] Erik: Pastigo.
[1:04:14 – 1:04:17] Erik: Pine and Poplar Rivers in northeast Wisconsin.
[1:04:17 – 1:04:21] Erik: These rivers have a very remote feel to large parts of them.
[1:04:21 – 1:04:24] Erik: There are Class III rapids and falls that you have to be aware of.
[1:04:25 – 1:04:28] Erik: Some sections are better for kayaks.
[1:04:29 – 1:04:31] Erik: But there are awesome canoeable stretches.
[1:04:32 – 1:04:33] Erik: The Black River.
[1:04:34 – 1:04:39] Erik: Most of it below the dam is easy paddling with a gentle current and hardly any rapids.
[1:04:40 – 1:04:42] Erik: Sandbars around for beer breaks.
[1:04:43 – 1:04:47] Erik: We would camp right on the sandbars, but some are private property.
[1:04:47 – 1:04:50] Adam: You ever been to Black River Falls in July?
[1:04:50 – 1:04:52] Adam: Better bring some fireworks.
[1:04:52 – 1:04:54] Erik: Better bring some fireworks and extra beers.
[1:04:55 – 1:04:57] Adam: There’s pretty nice musky in them waters.
[1:04:58 – 1:04:59] Erik: In the Black River.
[1:04:59 – 1:05:01] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:01 – 1:05:05] Adam: I’ve been over in that neck of the woods for sure.
[1:05:05 – 1:05:06] Adam: Neck of the woods.
[1:05:06 – 1:05:07] Adam: Way back in the day, Eric.
[1:05:09 – 1:05:12] Adam: They got a couple two-tree quick trips up there.
[1:05:13 – 1:05:15] Erik: Is that where the original quick trip is?
[1:05:15 – 1:05:17] Adam: That’s where the original, that’s where quick trips started.
[1:05:18 – 1:05:19] Adam: Black River Falls, Wisconsin.
[1:05:19 – 1:05:22] Erik: Yeah, that’s where Jedediah Tripp was born.
[1:05:24 – 1:05:26] Erik: White River by Ashland.
[1:05:26 – 1:05:31] Erik: This is an awesome paddle if you can handle class one and maybe low level two rapids.
[1:05:32 – 1:05:33] Adam: I think I can.
[1:05:34 – 1:05:36] Erik: I mean, what’s a class one?
[1:05:37 – 1:05:39] Adam: That’s like a four to six foot drop.
[1:05:40 – 1:05:41] Erik: Jesus.
[1:05:41 – 1:05:41] Erik: It’s not.
[1:05:42 – 1:05:44] Adam: No, I think that’s a class six, actually.
[1:05:44 – 1:05:48] Erik: We should do an episode that’s just detailing the river classes.
[1:05:48 – 1:05:48] Adam: Yeah.
[1:05:49 – 1:05:50] Adam: I’ll put it on the list.
[1:05:50 – 1:05:50] Adam: There you go.
[1:05:50 – 1:05:51] Adam: Put it on the whiteboard, Eric.
[1:06:00 – 1:06:01] Adam: What is he writing?
[1:06:01 – 1:06:02] Adam: All right, we got it.
[1:06:02 – 1:06:04] Erik: It is almost wilderness for most of it.
[1:06:04 – 1:06:10] Erik: The one thing you have to be careful of is that the hydro plant downstream isn’t doing a drawdown.
[1:06:10 – 1:06:13] Adam: I’ll suck you right in the turbine otherwise.
[1:06:13 – 1:06:15] Adam Scat: Make sure you’re not doing a drawdown.
[1:06:15 – 1:06:16] Adam: I got you.
[1:06:16 – 1:06:18] Erik: You’re never going to get out of that turbine.
[1:06:18 – 1:06:23] Erik: If they are, you can encounter a very dangerous situation at dam slash takeout.
[1:06:24 – 1:06:25] Erik: Happened to my buddies.
[1:06:26 – 1:06:26] UNKNOWN: What?
[1:06:27 – 1:06:29] Adam: Rest in peace, buddies.
[1:06:30 – 1:06:31] Adam: RIP, buds.
[1:06:31 – 1:06:32] Erik: RIP, buddies.
[1:06:33 – 1:06:39] Adam: No, they, by all accounts, do seem like they’re up in heaven with Leroy Butler and Reggie White.
[1:06:40 – 1:06:41] Adam Scat: I don’t think Leroy Butler’s dead, Eric.
[1:06:41 – 1:06:43] Adam Scat: Why do you say that about number 36?
[1:06:43 – 1:06:45] Erik: I don’t know anything about football, but something tells me…
[1:06:45 – 1:06:47] Adam: He should be in the Hall of Fame.
[1:06:47 – 1:06:48] Adam: This is a bunch of baloney.
[1:06:48 – 1:06:49] Adam: He’s in the…
[1:06:50 – 1:06:52] Adam: He’s in the Packers Hall of Fame, which is the only one that matters.
[1:06:54 – 1:06:55] Erik: That’s the only one that matters.
[1:06:55 – 1:06:58] Erik: Next to the Don Hudson’s ever heard of, Eric?
[1:06:59 – 1:07:02] Adam: Really bringing out the eastern Wisconsin to me tonight with this Peshtigo stuff.
[1:07:02 – 1:07:04] Erik: Peshtigo.
[1:07:04 – 1:07:04] Adam: Quick trip.
[1:07:04 – 1:07:06] Adam: Talking about quick trips in Peshtigos now.
[1:07:07 – 1:07:09] Adam: Oh, we’re going to talk about Red Dogs next.
[1:07:10 – 1:07:11] Adam: Red Dog Ice, too.
[1:07:12 – 1:07:12] Erik: Yep.
[1:07:13 – 1:07:13] Adam: 6.6%.
[1:07:15 – 1:07:17] Erik: St. Croix, and now McKagan.
[1:07:17 – 1:07:21] Erik: Others commented on these, so I’ll leave it at that, but they are beautiful and awesome.
[1:07:22 – 1:07:23] Erik: Many others.
[1:07:23 – 1:07:29] Erik: Buy the books by Mike Svob called Paddling Northern Wisconsin and Paddling Southern Wisconsin.
[1:07:30 – 1:07:32] Erik: I love that that was broken up into two.
[1:07:32 – 1:07:34] Erik: If you want more details, two different books.
[1:07:34 – 1:07:34] Adam: I have those books.
[1:07:35 – 1:07:35] Adam: Well.
[1:07:35 – 1:07:36] Adam: They’re good books.
[1:07:36 – 1:07:37] Adam: They are good books.
[1:07:37 – 1:07:38] Adam: By Mike Svob.
[1:07:39 – 1:07:43] Erik: Oh, you pronounce it S-V-O-B as a fob?
[1:07:44 – 1:07:44] Erik: What did you say?
[1:07:45 – 1:07:46] Erik: Svob.
[1:07:46 – 1:07:46] Erik: Svob.
[1:07:47 – 1:07:48] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:07:48 – 1:08:04] Erik: It could be S-V in Wisconsin is pronounced as an F. I’m sure there’s a YouTube channel out there, but somebody does need to put together a full mini dictionary translator for how to pronounce half of the crap that Wisconsin people say.
[1:08:04 – 1:08:06] Adam: He’s from Kiwani, you know.
[1:08:06 – 1:08:06] Erik: Yeah.
[1:08:08 – 1:08:09] Erik: He’s from Kiwani, you know.
[1:08:09 – 1:08:13] Adam: All right, well.
[1:08:13 – 1:08:13] Erik: I don’t know.
[1:08:13 – 1:08:14] Erik: I think we could probably end it there.
[1:08:15 – 1:08:16] Adam: I’m ready.
[1:08:16 – 1:08:17] Adam: Yeah, we got to get some fresh air.
[1:08:17 – 1:08:22] Adam: There’s still a little bit of sunshine left, and we don’t want to make this an after dark episode.
[1:08:22 – 1:08:26] Adam: It’s been pretty clean and family friendly so far, so I think we better safely end it there.
[1:08:27 – 1:08:31] Adam: I got three recommendations with a star.
[1:08:31 – 1:08:43] Adam: Wabakimi, home of Wendell Beckwith, that freak, Isle Royale, and the fabulous first-time comment of the year from Careless Seawood.
[1:08:43 – 1:08:44] Adam: Seaweed?
[1:08:44 – 1:08:45] Adam: Seawood.
[1:08:45 – 1:08:46] Adam: Seawood.
[1:08:46 – 1:08:47] Adam: Careless Seawood.
[1:08:47 – 1:08:49] Adam: Careless Driftwood.
[1:08:50 – 1:08:51] Adam: All Driftwood construction on that thing.
[1:08:52 – 1:08:54] Adam: And then Woodland Caribou.
[1:08:54 – 1:08:55] Adam: Those are the three that got stars.
[1:08:56 – 1:08:57] Adam: And a couple other ones mentioned there.
[1:08:57 – 1:09:00] Adam: A lot of good ideas.
[1:09:00 – 1:09:03] Adam: Namakaga River got a couple bonus stars, I guess, at the end.
[1:09:04 – 1:09:05] Adam: And well-deserved.
[1:09:05 – 1:09:08] Adam: So I’m excited to see what part two has to offer.
[1:09:08 – 1:09:12] Adam: But I think we do have to leave it there for tonight.
[1:09:12 – 1:09:14] Erik: I think we probably should.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:16] Erik: There’s definitely half the comments to go.
[1:09:16 – 1:09:20] Erik: We’re going to start with Trout Fishing Papa.
[1:09:20 – 1:09:26] Adam: Yeah, get your comments in there if you are listening to this on Sunday or Monday, and we’ll add them in.
[1:09:27 – 1:09:30] Adam: And I think we do have to put Wabakimi on the list.
[1:09:30 – 1:09:31] Adam: I don’t know which one’s closer.
[1:09:31 – 1:09:34] Adam: Do you have to fly to both of them, Eric, Wabakimi and Woodland Caribou?
[1:09:35 – 1:09:37] Erik: Take a train to one of them?
[1:09:37 – 1:09:39] Erik: Well, you can fly to both of them.
[1:09:39 – 1:09:41] Adam: Can you take a train to one, though, I thought?
[1:09:41 – 1:09:43] Erik: You can train to both of them.
[1:09:44 – 1:09:45] Erik: There’s only one that you can drive to.
[1:09:45 – 1:09:51] Erik: I think you can drive to parts of Woodland Caribou, but no parts of Wabakimi you can drive directly to.
[1:09:51 – 1:09:52] Adam: Holy smokes.
[1:09:52 – 1:09:53] Adam: We got to get there.
[1:09:53 – 1:09:55] Adam: So put it on the long-term list.
[1:09:55 – 1:09:55] Adam: We’ll put that on that.
[1:09:55 – 1:09:58] Adam: That’s the other whiteboard over there by Gordy.
[1:09:58 – 1:09:59] Adam: The Holy Smokes board?
[1:09:59 – 1:10:02] Adam: Yeah, Holy Smokes board curated by Gordy.
[1:10:03 – 1:10:04] Adam: Welcome, Gordy, also to the shed.
[1:10:05 – 1:10:07] Adam: Gordy’s still here rocking the beautiful sombrero.
[1:10:08 – 1:10:09] Adam: And with that…
[1:10:10 – 1:10:21] Adam: I think we have reached the dessert of the episode, which is we finished these Centennial IPAs you’ve so generously brought to us from Albertsons in Idaho.
[1:10:21 – 1:10:24] Erik: I still have a third of mine left, but yeah, more or less.
[1:10:25 – 1:10:26] Adam: Absolutely.
[1:10:28 – 1:10:30] Adam: So thank you for the comments on the thread.
[1:10:31 – 1:10:33] Adam: It’s good to be back talking paddling and camping.
[1:10:33 – 1:10:36] Adam: We have a trip kind of in the works, I think.
[1:10:37 – 1:10:39] Adam: I feel like it’s going to happen at this point.
[1:10:40 – 1:10:44] Adam: Don’t want to say too much and jinx it, but we have a solid plan going.
[1:10:45 – 1:10:49] Adam: It is a Boundary Waters adjacent trip of its own kind.
[1:10:50 – 1:11:19] Adam: uh perhaps might happen here in a couple weeks it looks like so it’s good to it’s good to have that feeling again of like paddling perhaps happening in the future because for the last couple months uh the canoe has been hung up here in the shed doesn’t feel like there’s any water in my future sometimes we had that drought i mean the park got closed life is happening eric is in idaho i drove to our pets heads are falling off
[1:11:20 – 1:11:22] Erik: I quit drinking coffee.
[1:11:22 – 1:11:23] Erik: Start a poll.
[1:11:23 – 1:11:28] Erik: Is the podcast better or worse since I’ve quit caffeine?
[1:11:28 – 1:11:29] Adam: I can’t tell the difference.
[1:11:29 – 1:11:31] Adam: You seem like the same old Eric to me.
[1:11:31 – 1:11:40] Erik: Well, that’s good because I feel like I was drinking a pot of coffee every morning and it was making my insides go kind of, I don’t know, crazy.
[1:11:41 – 1:11:44] Erik: And so that needed to at least have a little bit of a break.
[1:11:45 – 1:11:48] Erik: I don’t know if the jitters, they suck.
[1:11:50 – 1:11:50] Erik: Yeah.
[1:11:51 – 1:11:54] Erik: Hey, if the podcast was not as good, let me know.
[1:11:55 – 1:11:56] Erik: I’ll start drinking coffee again.
[1:11:57 – 1:11:59] Adam: We’ll get a coffee pod in this shed.
[1:11:59 – 1:12:03] Erik: I will sacrifice my health if it means that the podcast will improve.
[1:12:04 – 1:12:09] Adam: I think it’s right where it needs to be for September 10th, 2021, Eric.
[1:12:10 – 1:12:11] Erik: Okay.
[1:12:11 – 1:12:12] Adam: We’re having a good time here in the shed.
[1:12:12 – 1:12:14] Adam: Thanks for being here with us again.
[1:12:14 – 1:12:16] Adam: Thank you to all the tumble homies out there.
[1:12:17 – 1:12:19] Adam: And thank you.
[1:12:19 – 1:12:21] Adam: Shout out, big shout out to the Patreons.
[1:12:23 – 1:12:24] Adam: Proud independent podcast.
[1:12:24 – 1:12:28] Adam: And you’re helping to keep this way, helping to keep the servers on.
[1:12:28 – 1:12:30] Adam: And we’re buying a couple whiteboards.
[1:12:30 – 1:12:31] Adam: So thank you.
[1:12:31 – 1:12:34] Adam: Thank you for all that generous support over the years.
[1:12:34 – 1:12:37] Adam: We’re finally going to invest in a couple whiteboards.
[1:12:37 – 1:12:43] Adam: And remember to watch out for those fall migrating warblers out there this time of year, folks.
[1:12:43 – 1:12:50] Erik: I am seriously going to look up what is the largest whiteboard that you can buy that can be shipped.
[1:12:50 – 1:12:51] Adam: Yeah, I love it.
[1:12:51 – 1:12:53] Adam: Can we get one like door-sized?
[1:12:53 – 1:12:54] Adam: Maybe as big as this map?
[1:12:55 – 1:12:57] Adam: There’s plenty of wall space in here in the shed.
[1:12:57 – 1:12:58] Erik: That’s what I’m saying.
[1:12:58 – 1:13:00] Erik: One that fills up a whole wall.
[1:13:00 – 1:13:03] Adam: Yeah, you’ve got a multiple list just going on one whiteboard.
[1:13:04 – 1:13:06] Adam: Not have to have five different small whiteboards.
[1:13:06 – 1:13:07] Adam: That’s ridiculous.
[1:13:07 – 1:13:08] Erik: No, yeah, you just draw a line.
[1:13:10 – 1:13:10] Adam: All righty.
[1:13:11 – 1:13:14] Adam: I am ready to go for a walk.
[1:13:14 – 1:13:16] Erik: Yeah, I should stretch the legs.
[1:13:17 – 1:13:21] Erik: I’ve been standing all day, but not actually moving the legs.
[1:13:21 – 1:13:22] Erik: Let’s move them.
[1:13:22 – 1:13:23] Adam: That’s how it happens.
[1:13:23 – 1:13:26] Adam: All right, for Tomahome, a Boundary Wanderers podcast.
[1:13:26 – 1:13:31] Adam: This has been episode 0161, and thank you for being here.
[1:13:32 – 1:13:36] Adam: We’ll bookmark it, and we’re going to come back to this one next week.
[1:13:36 – 1:13:51] Adam: Additional comments on where you’re going, how’s she going by, and obviously the park’s open, so then we’re going right back into actual BWCA True North content.
[1:13:52 – 1:13:56] Adam: As we always say, Eric, life is precious, and every day is a miracle.
[1:13:56 – 1:13:58] Adam: Happy paddling.
[1:14:04 – 1:14:14] Adam: Tonight’s Ron Schera outdoor calendar fact of the day for July 23rd, 2021 is cats are bad.
[1:14:18 – 1:14:22] Adam: My cat got sprayed by a skunk this week.
[1:14:23 – 1:14:25] Adam: I’m telling you, this week’s been testing me, Eric.
[1:16:08 – 1:16:12] Adam: We got a cat, a generalized cat ban on the house now.
[1:16:12 – 1:16:13] Adam: No cats allowed.
