Episode Transcript

[0:00:33 – 0:00:34] Erik: To the shed.
[0:00:37 – 0:00:38] Erik: My name is Eric.
[0:00:39 – 0:00:46] Erik: Joined as always by my shed partner, Adam.
[0:00:46 – 0:00:46] Erik: Hello.
[0:00:47 – 0:00:48] Adam: Good evening.
[0:00:49 – 0:00:49] Erik: Good evening.
[0:00:49 – 0:00:50] Adam: Friend in the shed.
[0:00:50 – 0:00:52] Erik: Friend in the shed.
[0:00:52 – 0:00:55] Erik: And the friend in the shed and the silver spoon.
[0:00:55 – 0:00:58] Adam: I’m the friend you need.
[0:01:05 – 0:01:26] Erik: episode zero one six nine of tumble home a boundary waters podcast this is a uh a fall intro into something that i am definitely interested in learning more about you’ve been out in the field
[0:01:26 – 0:01:27] Erik: Tending nets.
[0:01:28 – 0:01:29] Adam: Happy netting, folks.
[0:01:30 – 0:01:30] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:30 – 0:01:31] Adam: Happy netting.
[0:01:31 – 0:01:34] Adam: You’re going to hear that phrase a few times in the episode.
[0:01:35 – 0:01:35] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:36 – 0:01:38] Adam: Finally tried whitefish netting.
[0:01:39 – 0:01:39] Erik: That’s crazy.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:01:40 – 0:01:42] Erik: I mean, it is so foreign to me.
[0:01:43 – 0:01:45] Erik: Like the seasons, where you can do it.
[0:01:46 – 0:01:48] Adam: It still doesn’t even seem like you should be able to do this.
[0:01:48 – 0:01:48] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:49 – 0:01:50] Adam: It doesn’t seem legal, but it is.
[0:01:51 – 0:01:51] Erik: Netting?
[0:01:51 – 0:01:51] Adam: Yeah.
[0:01:52 – 0:02:01] Adam: It’s very ancient and like there’s something very, yeah, like it just feels very ancient and good, but also a little naughty.
[0:02:01 – 0:02:01] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:01 – 0:02:04] Adam: Because it’s just a little too easy to catch those whitefish.
[0:02:04 – 0:02:05] Adam: Too easy.
[0:02:06 – 0:02:07] Adam: But, yeah, I don’t know.
[0:02:07 – 0:02:08] Adam: I don’t think a lot of people do this.
[0:02:09 – 0:02:15] Adam: And, you know, this is the first time I’ve ever gotten to try it and something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.
[0:02:16 – 0:02:17] Adam: I’ve caught whitefish before.
[0:02:17 – 0:02:17] Adam: Yeah.
[0:02:17 – 0:02:18] Adam: Ice fishing.
[0:02:19 – 0:02:22] Adam: I don’t think I’ve ever gotten one in the open water season.
[0:02:22 – 0:02:23] Adam: So it’s been a blast.
[0:02:24 – 0:02:28] Adam: We’ve been out for the last four days just without checking the nets a couple hours ago.
[0:02:29 – 0:02:37] Adam: And the original plan was to just go for like a weekend, you know, but we’re instantly hooked as you’re about to hear.
[0:02:38 – 0:02:43] Adam: And so we have a lot of field audio, a lot of strange field audio coming at you.
[0:02:43 – 0:02:43] Adam: Wait, what?
[0:02:44 – 0:02:44] Erik: What?
[0:02:44 – 0:02:46] Erik: The field audio is a little strange?
[0:02:46 – 0:02:47] Adam: It’s going to be weird.
[0:02:48 – 0:02:53] Adam: A warning, you know, this episode is labeled explicit.
[0:02:53 – 0:02:54] Adam: Some things happened.
[0:02:55 – 0:03:00] Erik: There’s a little W in a square instead of an E, just for weird.
[0:03:00 – 0:03:01] Adam: It’s weird and explicit.
[0:03:02 – 0:03:09] Adam: Yeah, there’s going to be a few things that aren’t going to be able to be caught by the loon bleep, unfortunately, I don’t think, because there’s no notes.
[0:03:09 – 0:03:10] Adam: Too fast, too furious.
[0:03:11 – 0:03:16] Adam: It’s a little bit of a flurry of curses hit our nets on Sunday.
[0:03:16 – 0:03:17] Adam: Yeah.
[0:03:17 – 0:03:41] Adam: it was a fun time though it’s a happiness of curses yeah so my apologies for that it’s uh we like to keep it clean and uh we are a proud independent podcast and sometimes you know we just get a little too excited as you’ll see um so yeah i you know i lived on poplar which is another lake that you can do this on we happen to be working devil’s track this week because it’s just closer and um
[0:03:43 – 0:03:46] Adam: Yeah, but I lived on Poplar for seven years where you can whitefish net.
[0:03:46 – 0:03:47] Adam: Never even tried it.
[0:03:47 – 0:03:47] Erik: No netting?
[0:03:47 – 0:03:48] Adam: No nets.
[0:03:48 – 0:03:50] Adam: It’s hard to come up with a net.
[0:03:50 – 0:03:51] Adam: Nets are not cheap.
[0:03:52 – 0:03:53] Adam: They get tangled.
[0:03:53 – 0:03:55] Adam: Hard to find a net to borrow.
[0:03:55 – 0:03:57] Adam: Nobody’s borrowing out a net.
[0:03:57 – 0:04:01] Erik: There’s no ISO on Grand Marais sell and swap that you can just throw out.
[0:04:01 – 0:04:06] Adam: You would be laughed off the sell and swap trying to acquire a net on borrowed terms.
[0:04:06 – 0:04:12] Adam: But we actually got one this year, and Josh acquired a net to borrow.
[0:04:13 – 0:04:17] Adam: And so, yeah, Josh and I have been tending this net.
[0:04:18 – 0:04:21] Adam: So, yeah, you set it, and then every day you just go out, and you’ve got to check it once a day.
[0:04:22 – 0:04:22] Adam: That’s the rule.
[0:04:23 – 0:04:30] Adam: So once a day we’ve been like finding a time where it works for both of us to meet at the stashed boat and then go out to check the net.
[0:04:31 – 0:04:36] Adam: And then you pull a bunch of fish out of the net and then clean them and then go to work or whatever.
[0:04:36 – 0:04:37] Adam: So it’s been fun.
[0:04:37 – 0:04:38] Adam: Nice.
[0:04:38 – 0:04:39] Adam: So the weather’s been really nice.
[0:04:39 – 0:04:42] Adam: Weather’s about to turn, I think, a little bit here to the nasty side.
[0:04:43 – 0:04:44] Erik: A little bit, yeah.
[0:04:44 – 0:04:45] Adam: What you think of when you think of…
[0:04:45 – 0:04:50] Adam: This is why I probably never did it, because it just sounds like, why would you want to be in a boat in the early November winds?
[0:04:51 – 0:04:58] Adam: But it’s been calm and beautiful all week, so we’re about to get a taste of that cold and wind, so maybe it’s not going to be as fun anymore.
[0:04:59 – 0:05:00] Adam: But it’s been a blast so far.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:00] Erik: Nice.
[0:05:00 – 0:05:02] Erik: Well, we’ll talk a little bit more about it.
[0:05:02 – 0:05:09] Erik: In the meantime, we should say that we are sponsored, as always, by a chewing dog in the background.
[0:05:09 – 0:05:10] Adam: What is she doing?
[0:05:10 – 0:05:12] Adam: Harold, please calm down.
[0:05:14 – 0:05:16] Erik: I’m just going to chew on this shingle real loud.
[0:05:17 – 0:05:18] Adam: Where’d you find a shingle?
[0:05:20 – 0:05:23] Erik: It’s all those cedar shingles that you’ve got on top of your shed.
[0:05:24 – 0:05:26] Erik: Only the finest in the tumble shed.
[0:05:27 – 0:05:30] Erik: We are sponsored as always by our fine friends on Patreon.
[0:05:31 – 0:05:32] Erik: American Psycho.
[0:05:32 – 0:05:35] Erik: We’re talking in mere minutes.
[0:05:36 – 0:05:45] Erik: Maybe one of the more, I wouldn’t say most, but it’s up there in terms of an underrated movie, I think.
[0:05:46 – 0:06:10] Erik: yeah i mean escanaba in the moonlight there are some problematic parts of the movie but it’s pretty still pretty funny and interesting yeah very funny it’s weird and sort of scary even very hype yeah definitely way scarier than the last two uh spooky movies quote unquote that we watched way scarier than american psycho and way scarier than army of darkness for sure absolutely
[0:06:10 – 0:06:17] Erik: But yeah, definitely some parts that I would say, yeah, big question marks as to decision making.
[0:06:17 – 0:06:18] Adam: It’s a problem.
[0:06:20 – 0:06:20] Adam: At the time.
[0:06:20 – 0:06:23] Erik: Holy wow.
[0:06:23 – 0:06:36] Erik: Anytime you can get like hyper specific to a region and seemingly kind of nail some of the terminology, the phraseology.
[0:06:36 – 0:06:39] Adam: The euchre is spot on.
[0:06:40 – 0:06:56] Erik: ting just like they were for sure playing euchre they weren’t just filming a euchre scene yeah they probably did play 100 games of euchre yeah you know for cash you know things get spooky when a bunch of twos threes and fours turned up in a game of euchre that’s not good no
[0:06:57 – 0:07:04] Erik: So, yeah, if you’re interested in listening to our conversation on Tumble Home Cinema Classics, $5 a month on Patreon.
[0:07:05 – 0:07:22] Erik: Also, before we get to our beer sponsor, a new development in the public relations department, arts and sciences, whatever you want to call the t-shirt department.
[0:07:23 – 0:07:23] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:07:24 – 0:07:28] Erik: Is coming down the pipe.
[0:07:29 – 0:07:29] Erik: The pike?
[0:07:30 – 0:07:31] Adam: Yeah, the pike.
[0:07:32 – 0:07:34] Adam: Coming down the pike.
[0:07:34 – 0:07:35] Adam: Coming down the pike there.
[0:07:36 – 0:07:41] Erik: Yeah, we are updating the t-shirt for any $10 a month patrons.
[0:07:41 – 0:07:42] Adam: That’s the popping of wheelers.
[0:07:42 – 0:07:43] Erik: Popping of wheelers.
[0:07:44 – 0:07:51] Erik: Yeah, that… Man, you asked me, like, what’s the level of patrons that get t-shirts?
[0:07:51 – 0:07:51] Erik: And I was like…
[0:07:51 – 0:07:54] Adam: I thought it was The Happy Paddlers, but I guess it’s not.
[0:07:54 – 0:07:59] Erik: The Happy Paddlers are like the $3 level, which if you’re going to go $3, you might as well go $5.
[0:07:59 – 0:08:04] Erik: You want to listen to a couple of guys ramble about essentially random movies at this point.
[0:08:04 – 0:08:07] Adam: Escanaba in the Moonlight is a real hunting movie.
[0:08:07 – 0:08:10] Erik: Yeah, Escanaba in the Moonlight seems like a movie we should have done long ago.
[0:08:10 – 0:08:12] Adam: Yeah, that’s a camp, like, I don’t know, just the cabin.
[0:08:12 – 0:08:14] Adam: It’s mostly a cabin life movie.
[0:08:15 – 0:08:18] Adam: And by extension, just a camp life movie.
[0:08:18 – 0:08:18] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:19 – 0:08:21] Adam: It’s like a bunch of dudes camping out in a shack.
[0:08:21 – 0:08:23] Adam: Yeah.
[0:08:23 – 0:08:25] Adam: There’s a lot to like there, a lot to relate to.
[0:08:25 – 0:08:26] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:26 – 0:08:28] Erik: And also sort of like oddly…
[0:08:30 – 0:08:31] Erik: I don’t know.
[0:08:31 – 0:08:39] Erik: It’s like, it almost seems like if you could do anything and you would draw conclusions between the movies, the themes and the conversations that we have.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:40] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:40 – 0:08:57] Erik: But you know, for whatever reason, it seems like these last three actually do have odd like connections actually going back all the way to evil dead too, which is like the cabin in the woods, the idea in like what’s real and what’s not.
[0:08:57 – 0:08:57] Erik: Yeah.
[0:08:57 – 0:08:59] Erik: And like an American psycho factor, uh,
[0:08:59 – 0:09:06] Adam: Yeah, yeah, we were talking about this as like a triple, but now I think with Escanaba in there, these all four of them go together really well.
[0:09:06 – 0:09:06] Adam: I think so.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:07] Adam: Yeah, you’re right.
[0:09:07 – 0:09:15] Erik: Yeah, where it’s like, man, I sort of unintentionally…
[0:09:17 – 0:09:46] Erik: scheduled myself poorly where I didn’t actually know if I was going to be able to view this movie in time for our conversation but I had seen it a number of times and I was like well I can probably just I can probably just wing it based on my previous viewings but I’m so glad that I sat down with a computer because there are so many incredible lines in this movie and so many little details that I’m glad that I was able to get the chance to sit down and view it on the day that we’re going to talk about it I’m looking forward to it
[0:09:47 – 0:09:53] Erik: And usually when we do movies that we’ve seen before, I’m kind of like, well, I’ve seen it.
[0:09:53 – 0:09:54] Erik: There’s not going to be.
[0:09:54 – 0:09:59] Erik: I’m not as excited about them, but I’m definitely excited about this because I feel like in the past I’ve just watched it.
[0:09:59 – 0:10:00] Erik: Like, whatever.
[0:10:00 – 0:10:02] Erik: Yeah, it’s a goofy Northwoods.
[0:10:02 – 0:10:04] Erik: They got accents, whatever.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:04] Erik: But I don’t know.
[0:10:04 – 0:10:08] Erik: There’s something about this movie that I’m glad I paid attention to for an hour and a half.
[0:10:08 – 0:10:16] Erik: I also am shocked that I forgot about the fact that I actually own this movie on DVD.
[0:10:17 – 0:10:19] Adam: Do you have any special features on it?
[0:10:19 – 0:10:20] Erik: No.
[0:10:20 – 0:10:21] Erik: None.
[0:10:21 – 0:10:26] Erik: I should have taken a picture of it, but the opening menu of the movie is hilarious.
[0:10:26 – 0:10:31] Erik: It’s just Jeff Daniels kind of goofily at an angle, and then a big buck also at an angle.
[0:10:32 – 0:10:36] Erik: And the two options on the main menu page are play movie and chapters.
[0:10:37 – 0:10:39] SPEAKER_02: I was like, there’s no special features?
[0:10:39 – 0:10:40] SPEAKER_02: I get nothing.
[0:10:41 – 0:11:04] Erik: i got nothing i want a trailer i want to know more about is the play that this was based on oh yeah oh my god we gotta find tickets to go is he from michigan must be he’s gotta be well we’ll do some we’ll do some further research between now you better be and when we talk about it uh yeah it was a it’s a real doozy i’ve seen it like once before and that was a long time ago so it was a lot of fun to watch that last night uh for me
[0:11:05 – 0:11:05] Erik: It’s very fun.
[0:11:06 – 0:11:08] Erik: And if you haven’t seen it, Escanaba in the Moonlight.
[0:11:08 – 0:11:10] Erik: If you’re not a patron, I just highly recommend it.
[0:11:10 – 0:11:11] Erik: Give it a watch.
[0:11:11 – 0:11:14] Erik: But if you want to hear us talk about it, yeah, five bucks.
[0:11:14 – 0:11:24] Erik: And you can listen to all 30 plus movies that we’ve rambled on about in ways that are kind of associated with camping and being outdoors.
[0:11:25 – 0:11:27] Adam: It’s coming at it from the camping angle always.
[0:11:27 – 0:11:28] Erik: Yeah.
[0:11:28 – 0:11:31] Erik: And we are getting towards the Tumbly season.
[0:11:31 – 0:11:32] Adam: Absolutely.
[0:11:32 – 0:11:37] Erik: Which was a subreddit, I believe, post from Aldi1.
[0:11:37 – 0:11:39] Adam: Was a suggestion from Aldi1 on the subreddit.
[0:11:40 – 0:11:49] Erik: So we’re doing the Tumbly Awards, which is going to be essentially the awards for movies that we watched on Tumble Home Cinema Classics in the year 2021.
[0:11:50 – 0:11:51] Adam: Yeah, this year.
[0:11:51 – 0:11:53] Adam: We had to have watched it this year, not come out this year.
[0:11:54 – 0:11:56] Erik: Yeah, and there’s still two months of potential.
[0:11:57 – 0:11:58] Adam: So we’re going to load the docket.
[0:11:58 – 0:12:04] Adam: We’re going to load the docket up with some serious Meryl Streep films coming out next.
[0:12:04 – 0:12:05] Adam: What are you picking next?
[0:12:05 – 0:12:06] Adam: You have a lot of pressure.
[0:12:06 – 0:12:07] Erik: I do have a lot of pressure.
[0:12:07 – 0:12:12] Erik: I feel like it’s got to be something that’s heavily towards tumbly bait.
[0:12:12 – 0:12:17] Adam: Yeah, if Harv Presnell doesn’t win some awards at the Tumblies, I’m going to be very upset.
[0:12:17 – 0:12:17] Erik: Yeah.
[0:12:18 – 0:12:20] Adam: I’m going to be perturbed, Harv.
[0:12:20 – 0:12:38] Erik: Yeah, I’m not going to necessarily give it away right now, but it’s probably something leaning towards Fargo or The Revenant, which neither of which I think… Did The Revenant win Best Picture or did Leo just win Best Actor for that movie?
[0:12:38 – 0:12:39] Erik: I don’t think it won Best Picture.
[0:12:40 – 0:12:40] Adam: No.
[0:12:40 – 0:12:42] Adam: Best cinematography, though, for sure.
[0:12:42 – 0:12:43] Adam: Okay.
[0:12:43 – 0:12:43] Erik: Well.
[0:12:43 – 0:12:47] Adam: So there you got that going for you, which is nice.
[0:12:47 – 0:12:48] Erik: Did Fargo lose out to Titanic?
[0:12:49 – 0:12:50] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:12:50 – 0:12:50] Adam: Probably.
[0:12:50 – 0:12:51] Adam: Yeah.
[0:12:51 – 0:12:52] Adam: That sounds right.
[0:12:52 – 0:12:54] Erik: God help any movie that came out that year.
[0:12:54 – 0:12:55] Adam: Yeah.
[0:12:55 – 0:12:55] Adam: Mowed.
[0:12:55 – 0:12:56] Adam: Yeah.
[0:12:56 – 0:12:57] Adam: Got mowed down like an iceberg.
[0:12:58 – 0:13:00] Erik: Mowed down just like an iceberg.
[0:13:00 – 0:13:00] Erik: That’s what they do.
[0:13:00 – 0:13:01] Erik: Yeah.
[0:13:01 – 0:13:02] Adam: You got calved.
[0:13:04 – 0:13:04] Erik: Like a Berg.
[0:13:05 – 0:13:05] Erik: Like a Berg.
[0:13:08 – 0:13:09] Erik: Well, let’s do…
[0:13:09 – 0:13:12] Adam: Wait, we got to… Yeah, we should get this going, but we got to circle back.
[0:13:13 – 0:13:14] Erik: We’ll circle back.
[0:13:14 – 0:13:17] Erik: We’re not getting into field audio yet, but we do have some beer sponsors.
[0:13:17 – 0:13:18] Adam: We do, and I’m actually pretty thirsty.
[0:13:18 – 0:13:23] Adam: We got to get to these beautiful art supplies came delivered in a paper bag.
[0:13:24 – 0:13:25] Adam: I’ll just read off what we got here.
[0:13:25 – 0:13:27] Adam: Last time they were Polish.
[0:13:27 – 0:13:30] Adam: This time we’re going with a German variety.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:30] Adam: Enjoy.
[0:13:30 – 0:13:35] Adam: Thank you, James, for this German variety from Ursa Minor.
[0:13:36 – 0:13:37] Erik: Ursa Minor.
[0:13:38 – 0:13:39] Erik: Oktoberfest’s.
[0:13:41 – 0:13:42] Erik: 3.2%.
[0:13:42 – 0:13:46] Erik: This might be the lowest ABV we’ve ever experienced.
[0:13:46 – 0:13:47] Erik: Trust.
[0:13:47 – 0:13:48] Erik: I’m going to chug it.
[0:13:48 – 0:13:49] Erik: Here we go.
[0:13:50 – 0:13:58] Erik: Actually, we should go up on the roof and you can assist me in a shotgun maneuver a la Remnar and Jimmer.
[0:13:58 – 0:13:59] Adam: Whiskey!
[0:13:59 – 0:14:00] Adam: Whiskey chaser!
[0:14:01 – 0:14:02] Adam: That’s a pretty good Jimmer.
[0:14:05 – 0:14:06] Erik: Just call me White Belly.
[0:14:07 – 0:14:10] Adam: This is better than a line in Google, that’s for sure.
[0:14:10 – 0:14:12] Adam: It’s an Oktoberfest, so we missed it, all right?
[0:14:12 – 0:14:13] Adam: But it was in a paper bag.
[0:14:14 – 0:14:14] Erik: Well, it was.
[0:14:14 – 0:14:21] Erik: And every day we move forward beyond this point would make the Oktoberfest beer even crazier to drink.
[0:14:21 – 0:14:26] Adam: Yeah, it would be embarrassing if we had an Oktoberfest in February or something.
[0:14:26 – 0:14:28] Adam: So glad we found it when we did.
[0:14:28 – 0:14:29] Adam: It called to us.
[0:14:29 – 0:14:31] Erik: So again, another loophole for you donators.
[0:14:32 – 0:14:35] Erik: If you want to get in earlier, give us a seasonal one.
[0:14:35 – 0:14:37] Erik: One that has a name of a month.
[0:14:38 – 0:14:42] Erik: We’re forced to pull out that beer for that specific time.
[0:14:44 – 0:14:45] Adam: That’s a pretty neat maneuver.
[0:14:46 – 0:14:51] Adam: But, yeah, remember, though, the popping of wheelers is where you want to be.
[0:14:51 – 0:14:56] Adam: Eric was getting everyone excited for the happy paddlers, which are fine.
[0:14:56 – 0:14:58] Adam: They are fine folks, those happy paddlers.
[0:14:58 – 0:15:00] Adam: They are fine folks.
[0:15:00 – 0:15:02] Adam: Everybody likes the happy paddlers.
[0:15:02 – 0:15:08] Adam: But them popping of wheelers, you know, that’s the level you want to be at because then you’re going to get the brand-new Tumble Home shirt.
[0:15:08 – 0:15:13] Adam: What’s it been, two and a half years since we’ve had the last, when the last T-shirt design came out?
[0:15:14 – 0:15:15] Adam: Roughly, yeah, I would say.
[0:15:15 – 0:15:18] Adam: How many of those do you think are in circulation, the original T-shirt now?
[0:15:18 – 0:15:23] Erik: The original, I mean, I would say 40, 50 of those things out there.
[0:15:23 – 0:15:25] Adam: Do you still have some in stock?
[0:15:25 – 0:15:25] Erik: I do.
[0:15:25 – 0:15:28] Erik: I am running out of sizes, though, so it’s a good thing.
[0:15:28 – 0:15:30] Adam: See, so we’ve got to do a restock, so we’re going to a new shirt.
[0:15:30 – 0:15:34] Adam: So now by going to the new shirt, it’s exciting because it’s a brand-new design.
[0:15:34 – 0:15:36] Adam: I think you guys are going to really like it.
[0:15:36 – 0:15:36] Erik: Nice.
[0:15:37 – 0:15:37] Adam: Teaser.
[0:15:37 – 0:15:43] Adam: But it also just ensures those original edition shirts are super rare, so you don’t want to hang on to those.
[0:15:44 – 0:15:45] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:45 – 0:15:54] Erik: The next fleet of shirts that come out, I’m just going to take a big permanent marker and write like one of 70 or two of however many there are.
[0:15:54 – 0:15:54] Erik: Yeah.
[0:15:54 – 0:15:55] Erik: Just right on the back.
[0:15:56 – 0:16:00] Adam: So anyways, the shirt design is in its finalized state.
[0:16:00 – 0:16:06] Adam: So I guess anybody signing up from this point forward will be getting the new shirt.
[0:16:06 – 0:16:07] Adam: Congratulations.
[0:16:07 – 0:16:10] Erik: And you know, if we’re making promises on this podcast.
[0:16:10 – 0:16:11] Adam: We always follow through.
[0:16:11 – 0:16:12] Adam: We always follow through.
[0:16:12 – 0:16:17] Adam: Just like our good friend Ron Cher on tonight’s Ron Cher Outdoor Calendar Fact of the Day.
[0:16:17 – 0:16:17] Erik: He’s still around.
[0:16:17 – 0:16:19] Erik: He said goodbye on the last one.
[0:16:20 – 0:16:21] Adam: He came back.
[0:16:21 – 0:16:22] Adam: Love, Ron.
[0:16:25 – 0:16:26] Adam: I’m going to Florida for the rest of the year.
[0:16:26 – 0:16:28] Adam: See you next year, love, Ron.
[0:16:28 – 0:16:29] Adam: Ghostwriter.
[0:16:29 – 0:16:32] Adam: There’s not even a picture for November or December.
[0:16:33 – 0:16:34] Adam: Just blank pages.
[0:16:34 – 0:16:35] Adam: This is ridiculous.
[0:16:35 – 0:16:36] Erik: It’s just a calendar at this point.
[0:16:36 – 0:16:39] Adam: No, they don’t even have the numbers.
[0:16:40 – 0:16:41] Adam: Or the moon phases.
[0:16:41 – 0:16:45] Erik: It’s a 9 by 11 grid of squares.
[0:16:46 – 0:16:47] Adam: Ron’s down in Orlando.
[0:16:48 – 0:16:49] Adam: Of all places to go.
[0:16:50 – 0:16:50] Adam: Of all places.
[0:16:50 – 0:16:51] Adam: Why Orlando?
[0:16:52 – 0:16:52] Erik: Yeah.
[0:16:52 – 0:16:53] Adam: I hate the ocean.
[0:16:53 – 0:16:54] Adam: It’s not even near the ocean.
[0:16:54 – 0:16:55] Adam: That’s the fact of the day.
[0:16:56 – 0:16:57] Adam: No, it’s not.
[0:16:57 – 0:17:01] Adam: Today is November 9th, 2021.
[0:17:02 – 0:17:06] Adam: Your fact of the day is snapping turtles are hibernating.
[0:17:06 – 0:17:11] Adam: Sunset’s at 4.50 p.m. No!
[0:17:13 – 0:17:14] Erik: Yeah, we did go through the…
[0:17:17 – 0:17:22] Erik: universally hated weekend that is daylight savings.
[0:17:23 – 0:17:29] Erik: Anybody happy out there to lose an hour of daylight in the afternoon to get an hour of daylight?
[0:17:29 – 0:17:32] Adam: I don’t like walking the dog in the dark in the morning, though.
[0:17:32 – 0:17:34] Erik: So that’s nice.
[0:17:34 – 0:17:35] Erik: Yeah, I guess.
[0:17:35 – 0:17:37] Erik: There’s probably some people that don’t mind it.
[0:17:37 – 0:17:38] Adam: It’s going to be dark when I get off work either way.
[0:17:39 – 0:17:44] Adam: So at least I get that nice sunrise walk with the pup.
[0:17:44 – 0:17:48] Erik: I’d much rather have it be light at 715 than 350.
[0:17:48 – 0:17:51] Adam: Yeah, either way, we live too far north.
[0:17:51 – 0:17:52] Adam: Too much daylight in the summer.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:53] Adam: Not enough.
[0:17:53 – 0:17:54] Adam: Not nearly enough.
[0:17:54 – 0:17:59] Erik: Yeah, we are right in the groove of the most affected when it comes to daylight savings.
[0:18:00 – 0:18:01] Adam: It’s one of the worst parts about living up here.
[0:18:01 – 0:18:04] Adam: They don’t tell you about that episode 38, why you should move up north.
[0:18:04 – 0:18:07] Adam: They tell you all the good things about it.
[0:18:07 – 0:18:11] Erik: That was a great wild guess at the number of the episode that that one was.
[0:18:11 – 0:18:12] Adam: No, that’s a rock fact.
[0:18:12 – 0:18:13] Adam: That’s what it was.
[0:18:13 – 0:18:14] Erik: What was episode 38?
[0:18:14 – 0:18:16] Erik: I don’t think it was that.
[0:18:16 – 0:18:20] Erik: I think episode 38 was closer to the boat show, maybe.
[0:18:21 – 0:18:21] Erik: Who knows?
[0:18:21 – 0:18:23] Erik: Not going to look it up.
[0:18:23 – 0:18:24] Erik: Not going to look it up.
[0:18:25 – 0:18:29] Adam: Anyhow, I don’t mind the darkness.
[0:18:29 – 0:18:32] Adam: I do mind the 22 hours of daylight in June.
[0:18:32 – 0:18:34] Erik: I would much rather have this time of year and this…
[0:18:41 – 0:19:03] Adam: whatever time to work and go check the nets that’s all you need yeah this guy’s a dog this guy’s a net boy now walk the dog work and then go check the nets that’s the and then darkness that’s perfect day go check the nets yeah we’re getting a net i think uh we’re gonna you we get three of three nets going next year you know one per person
[0:19:04 – 0:19:06] Adam: Yeah, every person can have a net.
[0:19:06 – 0:19:11] Adam: You have to be a resident of Minnesota, licensed fisher, licensed angler.
[0:19:11 – 0:19:13] Erik: You can’t be an out-of-state netter?
[0:19:14 – 0:19:17] Adam: No, out-of-state netting allowed.
[0:19:18 – 0:19:24] Erik: Is it just lakes that happen to have whitefish in them that get deemed nettable?
[0:19:24 – 0:19:25] Erik: I guess so.
[0:19:25 – 0:19:25] Erik: I don’t, yeah.
[0:19:26 – 0:19:27] Erik: And when does the season actually start?
[0:19:28 – 0:19:32] Erik: It was like a couple weeks ago, give or take.
[0:19:32 – 0:19:35] Adam: It’s based on water, like assumed water temperature.
[0:19:36 – 0:19:37] Erik: Oh, so it fluctuates?
[0:19:37 – 0:19:46] Adam: Yeah, but they kind of have a set date, but I guess they could amend that and post it at the boat launches or something if they really wanted to adjust it on the fly, but I don’t know.
[0:19:46 – 0:19:51] Adam: It was like a couple weekends ago they opened it, but the water temperatures are still pretty warm.
[0:19:51 – 0:19:52] Erik: Is there a limit?
[0:19:52 – 0:19:53] Adam: A limit of what?
[0:19:56 – 0:19:57] Erik: A limit of what, Eric?
[0:19:57 – 0:19:59] Erik: A limit of what you can take out in your net.
[0:19:59 – 0:20:03] Erik: I suppose once it’s in the net, it’s kind of hard to be like, well, we’re going to release that guy.
[0:20:04 – 0:20:06] Adam: It’s just a time frame.
[0:20:06 – 0:20:09] Adam: You can catch as many of them as you can get your hands on.
[0:20:09 – 0:20:11] Erik: What happens if you net something that’s not a whitefish?
[0:20:12 – 0:20:13] Adam: You got to put that back.
[0:20:13 – 0:20:14] Adam: That ain’t legal.
[0:20:15 – 0:20:20] Erik: What’s your favorite thing to do with a fresh netted whitefish?
[0:20:20 – 0:20:31] Adam: Well, I mean, the first day we picked them, I filleted a bunch up and cut them up into smaller pieces and then panko breaded, fried them in butter.
[0:20:32 – 0:20:56] Adam: just general uh salt and pepper just general fish preparation yeah i didn’t do anything fancy with them i just made a little like panko breaded fish nuggets with them like literally a you know hour and a half out of the net perfect oof you know they get they do have a little bit of a tricky bone structure i was gonna say how do they clean they call it a pin bone you know whitefish it’s a lot like the y bone in a pike you know i’m familiar with this
[0:20:56 – 0:20:58] Erik: So you kind of fillet him, but then you have to pick that.
[0:20:58 – 0:21:04] Adam: Yeah, you can either just fillet him out like normal and then back fillet that out or whatever, or you can go around it.
[0:21:05 – 0:21:06] Erik: Or you can get real fancy with the tip of the knife.
[0:21:07 – 0:21:09] Adam: Yeah, I just do like an angle cut around it.
[0:21:09 – 0:21:14] Adam: I’ll sacrifice a little just to make a little meat just to make sure it’s clean if I want to fillet it out and like eat it.
[0:21:14 – 0:21:17] Adam: But then the rest of them, I’m just going to pickle.
[0:21:17 – 0:21:21] Adam: So then you don’t have to be as careful if you’re going to pickle them.
[0:21:21 – 0:21:24] Adam: The brine will take care of the little tips of the bones for you.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:24] Erik: Sure.
[0:21:24 – 0:21:25] Erik: Yeah.
[0:21:25 – 0:21:27] Erik: Is there anything that isn’t good pickled?
[0:21:28 – 0:21:29] Erik: No.
[0:21:29 – 0:21:30] Erik: Right.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:30] Erik: Everything’s good pickled.
[0:21:30 – 0:21:31] Erik: I think that’s the right answer.
[0:21:31 – 0:21:35] Adam: Yeah, I got a couple new fermenters I’m just dying to try out.
[0:21:37 – 0:21:38] Erik: Fermented is different than pickled.
[0:21:38 – 0:21:40] Adam: Yeah, you know, it’s the same vessel.
[0:21:40 – 0:21:41] Adam: You can pickle or ferment.
[0:21:41 – 0:21:48] Erik: Yeah, there’s definitely things that are really bad fermented, but really I don’t think there’s too many things that I can’t eat once pickled.
[0:21:49 – 0:21:50] Adam: Yeah, I’m excited to see what happens.
[0:21:50 – 0:21:56] Adam: I guess I’m going to use the old family pike pickling recipe on the whitefish.
[0:21:56 – 0:21:58] Erik: It’s a family recipe.
[0:21:58 – 0:21:59] Adam: Yes.
[0:21:59 – 0:22:00] Adam: Very nice.
[0:22:00 – 0:22:00] Adam: I need it.
[0:22:00 – 0:22:01] Adam: Brother Andrew, are you listening?
[0:22:02 – 0:22:02] Adam: I need that recipe.
[0:22:02 – 0:22:04] Adam: Please send it immediately, post haste.
[0:22:04 – 0:22:06] Adam: Tumblehomecast at gmail.com.
[0:22:06 – 0:22:10] Adam: Send us your family secret pickling recipes.
[0:22:11 – 0:22:12] Erik: Fish, eggs.
[0:22:14 – 0:22:14] Erik: Vinegar.
[0:22:14 – 0:22:15] Erik: What else do you pickle?
[0:22:16 – 0:22:16] Erik: Vegetables.
[0:22:17 – 0:22:18] Adam: That’s everything, I think.
[0:22:19 – 0:22:20] Adam: That’s all of them, yeah.
[0:22:20 – 0:22:21] Adam: You don’t want feet.
[0:22:22 – 0:22:23] Erik: Well, pig’s feet.
[0:22:23 – 0:22:24] Adam: And chicken feet.
[0:22:26 – 0:22:27] Erik: You want to deep fry the chicken feet.
[0:22:28 – 0:22:29] Adam: I’m not doing the whole egg.
[0:22:32 – 0:22:34] Adam: Whole pickled eggs?
[0:22:34 – 0:22:34] Adam: Yeah.
[0:22:34 – 0:22:35] Adam: Actually…
[0:22:35 – 0:22:36] Adam: I’m not in my 20s anymore.
[0:22:36 – 0:22:37] Adam: I can’t handle that.
[0:22:37 – 0:22:49] Erik: Yeah, not too bad generally, but my experience with pickled eggs is I received a bit of the food poisoning…
[0:22:51 – 0:22:59] Erik: Hours after consuming pickled eggs and drinking some Laphroaig scotch.
[0:23:01 – 0:23:05] Erik: And both of those came back up through my nose.
[0:23:06 – 0:23:08] Erik: So I can’t really enjoy either of those anymore.
[0:23:09 – 0:23:11] Erik: And that’s no fault of either of those products.
[0:23:11 – 0:23:19] Erik: It’s just the association that they have with a, I think, probably a bad salad bar that I was at earlier in that day.
[0:23:19 – 0:23:45] Erik: you’re gonna blame it on the quick trip salad bar i’m not gonna name the place but it wasn’t quick trip it wasn’t quick trip you don’t need a salad bar for that at quick trip you can get yourself a pickled egg and a scotch i think there’s a specific yeah there’s probably a specific section in quick trip where you can just decide to get food poisoning in a bag in a bag yeah it’s right next to the milk in a bag
[0:23:45 – 0:23:51] Adam: Also, shout out to the question of the year on the Tumble Home subreddit.
[0:23:51 – 0:23:57] Adam: Make sure you get out there and get on that question of the year thread.
[0:23:58 – 0:23:59] Erik: Yeah, where’d you go?
[0:23:59 – 0:23:59] Erik: What did you see?
[0:24:00 – 0:24:02] Adam: Yeah, it’s where all the best stories are being told.
[0:24:03 – 0:24:05] Erik: Tell your best story.
[0:24:06 – 0:24:07] Erik: We’ve told ours.
[0:24:07 – 0:24:08] Erik: We want to hear yours.
[0:24:10 – 0:24:13] Erik: I’ve seen just a couple of first sentences from a couple of them so far.
[0:24:13 – 0:24:14] Adam: Oh, you have?
[0:24:14 – 0:24:15] Adam: I’ve avoided it so far.
[0:24:15 – 0:24:23] Erik: Well, I get the alerts on the phone, and I just kind of have to quickly flick that away so I don’t read more than necessary.
[0:24:24 – 0:24:29] Erik: A surprising number of responses from people who actually didn’t get out on trips this year.
[0:24:30 – 0:24:39] Erik: And also even more egregious were a couple of Canadians that I saw that did not take advantage of a almost vacant Quetico Provincial Park.
[0:24:40 – 0:24:43] Adam: I bet the fishing up there is so good right now.
[0:24:43 – 0:24:44] Erik: I know.
[0:24:44 – 0:24:51] Erik: I think early, early, early teaser on potential for next spring.
[0:24:51 – 0:24:53] Erik: I think we need to get back to Quetico.
[0:24:54 – 0:24:55] SPEAKER_02: I think we should do a trip there.
[0:24:56 – 0:24:57] Erik: Work on our RBCs.
[0:24:57 – 0:24:59] Erik: We’ll get our booster shots.
[0:24:59 – 0:25:00] Erik: We’ll download the app.
[0:25:00 – 0:25:02] Adam: I’m getting my booster in like a week.
[0:25:03 – 0:25:03] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:25:04 – 0:25:04] Erik: I’m scheduled.
[0:25:04 – 0:25:09] Erik: My house is filled right now with people that have just gotten the boosters, and they can’t lift their arms.
[0:25:10 – 0:25:12] Adam: How are they feeling?
[0:25:12 – 0:25:13] Erik: Not great.
[0:25:13 – 0:25:16] Adam: Well, I’m getting it, and I’m getting my RABC renewed.
[0:25:17 – 0:25:19] Adam: And, yeah, we’ll take the baby.
[0:25:19 – 0:25:20] Adam: Go out to…
[0:25:22 – 0:25:24] Adam: We’ve got to show the baby Agnes Lake.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:25] Erik: Oh, yeah.
[0:25:25 – 0:25:29] Erik: We could just knock at our ABCs and drive up through Canada and put in on the north side.
[0:25:30 – 0:25:31] Erik: We’ve never done that.
[0:25:31 – 0:25:31] Adam: There you go.
[0:25:32 – 0:25:33] Adam: We’ve got to show the baby out of Koken.
[0:25:33 – 0:25:34] Erik: Yeah, spend a night in…
[0:25:34 – 0:25:36] Adam: Does a baby need a passport?
[0:25:37 – 0:25:37] Adam: Yes.
[0:25:37 – 0:25:39] Adam: Does a baby need an RBC?
[0:25:41 – 0:25:44] Erik: I would imagine so, yeah.
[0:25:45 – 0:25:48] Erik: If that hurts pumping blood, you probably need to be documented.
[0:25:49 – 0:26:14] Erik: regardless of age i don’t know i think you can actually sign somebody up on your rb rabc if they’re a dependent yeah that makes sense yeah all right all right got that figured out well that’s uh we’re in that’s about it do you have anything else to say before we get into your field recordings on your new found um your newfound hobby i’m excited i just the schedule didn’t work out i wanted to get out there and
[0:26:14 – 0:26:15] Adam: Well, we’re not done.
[0:26:15 – 0:26:16] Adam: I will say that.
[0:26:16 – 0:26:17] Adam: We’re not done.
[0:26:17 – 0:26:21] Adam: There’s still a time for you to make it out to see the nets.
[0:26:21 – 0:26:22] Erik: See the nets.
[0:26:22 – 0:26:23] Erik: Look at that net.
[0:26:23 – 0:26:24] Erik: See the nets.
[0:26:24 – 0:26:25] Erik: That’s a beautiful net there.
[0:26:26 – 0:26:27] Adam: Devil’s Track Lake.
[0:26:28 – 0:26:38] Adam: Yeah, we’re in Devil’s Track, but there are, and I think I emphasized this enough on the field audio, but there’s a couple lakes entirely within the boundary waters with a netting season as well.
[0:26:38 – 0:26:41] Adam: Anybody out there that is doing that, hit us up.
[0:26:42 – 0:26:43] Adam: I want to hear about that for sure.
[0:26:43 – 0:26:45] Erik: Deep wilderness netting.
[0:26:45 – 0:26:46] Adam: Yeah.
[0:26:46 – 0:26:48] Adam: Brule, for instance.
[0:26:48 – 0:26:49] Adam: You can go cisco netting on Brule.
[0:26:51 – 0:26:56] Adam: Anybody out there doing a wall tent cisco netting camp in November out on Brule?
[0:26:57 – 0:26:58] Adam: I would like to hear about that.
[0:26:58 – 0:27:00] Erik: This would be the year to do it.
[0:27:00 – 0:27:02] Adam: I’d be interested to hear about that for sure.
[0:27:02 – 0:27:08] Erik: We are nowhere near any semblance of ice in at this point.
[0:27:08 – 0:27:19] Erik: You could probably, I would say arguably, definitely since we’ve started this podcast and probably since I’ve been up here, might be one of the latest ice ins up here.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:19] Adam: Oh, for sure.
[0:27:19 – 0:27:21] Adam: My father-in-law just texted me.
[0:27:21 – 0:27:23] Adam: He’s like, I think we were out ice fishing on this day last year.
[0:27:24 – 0:27:24] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:27:24 – 0:27:25] Adam: Like a few days ago.
[0:27:26 – 0:27:26] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:27 – 0:27:30] Adam: I’ve been out ice fishing on Thanksgiving, most Thanksgivings.
[0:27:31 – 0:27:39] Erik: We are a month past when we typically, over the course of the last decade, have received a first measurable snowfall.
[0:27:39 – 0:27:45] Erik: And there was like maybe a half an inch to an inch that came down last week up the trail or whatever.
[0:27:45 – 0:27:47] Erik: But that is long gone.
[0:27:48 – 0:27:52] Erik: And it’s, I mean, it’s still, today was what?
[0:27:53 – 0:27:54] Erik: 60 degrees in the sun?
[0:27:54 – 0:27:54] Erik: Yeah.
[0:27:54 – 0:28:15] Adam: yeah uh devil’s water temps are still at like 44 and a half low 40 little 44s right now um so it’s got a ways to go i think like once i’ve been told that once we get into like the 30s then the big white fish start moving in the real jagundos big white fish we got a few nice ones uh already you know
[0:28:16 – 0:28:37] Adam: so yeah my first impression on this though is that i’m having a lot of fun with it and i cannot wait to get back and check the nets tomorrow that’s exciting and it’s like big big ice fishing yeah where you’re like yeah i’ve always liked ice fishing the most you know so this is like the most like ice fishing when open water it’s more like trapping which is what you know tip-up fishing is yeah
[0:28:37 – 0:28:39] Adam: Which is why I think I like it so much.
[0:28:39 – 0:28:42] Erik: But you don’t just have to sit there and stand and wait for the flag to go up.
[0:28:42 – 0:28:43] Erik: Right.
[0:28:43 – 0:28:47] Erik: You just go and check the net and almost guarantee there’s going to be different sizes of fish.
[0:28:47 – 0:28:49] Adam: And it’s helped that we’ve been doing pretty good.
[0:28:49 – 0:28:52] Adam: So it’s been a real hoot.
[0:28:52 – 0:28:53] Adam: So I don’t know.
[0:28:53 – 0:28:59] Adam: I mean, if anybody out there, I think I kind of say this in the last track I was recording driving back home today.
[0:28:59 – 0:29:05] Adam: But yeah, if anybody out there has the opportunity to borrow a net and do this or tag along with somebody that’s doing it,
[0:29:06 – 0:29:06] Adam: Highly recommend it.
[0:29:06 – 0:29:17] Adam: I’ll just say that, and I’ll let the field audio speak for itself from here on out, but I’m having a lot of fun with it, and it was planned to just be a few days, but the net is still in, so that’s how much fun we’re having.
[0:29:17 – 0:29:20] Erik: How long can you keep the net in until the ice comes in?
[0:29:20 – 0:29:24] Adam: There are people that run nets under the ice somehow, which is really nuts to me.
[0:29:24 – 0:29:25] Adam: I don’t think we’re going to pull that off, but…
[0:29:26 – 0:29:52] Adam: yeah basically until ice comes in i think the season there is like a season end date i recommend you look that up and it does change yearly yeah it does change yearly they’re not gonna like change the dns now but there’s no way like there will be ice before the season closes and we’re not going to continue fishing under the ice but there are people that run the nets under the ice even for this so yeah pretty neat it’s pretty neat and fun thing so highly recommended um so yes uh
[0:29:54 – 0:29:57] Adam: I guess we’ll kick it to our field correspondent now, I’m being told.
[0:29:58 – 0:30:02] Adam: Coming to you live from the road on the way to Devil’s Track Lake.
[0:30:17 – 0:30:18] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:30:18 – 0:30:19] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:30:21 – 0:30:25] Adam: Welcome to Whitefish Netting 2021.
[0:30:25 – 0:30:30] Adam: Coming to you live from the North Shore.
[0:30:30 – 0:30:34] Adam: Hello, thank you.
[0:30:34 – 0:30:39] Adam: You guys are sounding well in the tumble shed.
[0:30:40 – 0:30:51] Adam: This is Adam, coming to you live in the field, still on the pavement, and I will be for the entirety, until we hit the water at least.
[0:30:53 – 0:31:03] Adam: I’m heading along the north shore here of Devil’s Track Lake, one of three lakes in Cook County open to whitefish netting.
[0:31:06 – 0:31:08] Adam: Got a couple lakes where you can net for the Cisco, too.
[0:31:08 – 0:31:09] Adam: It’s a different…
[0:31:09 – 0:31:18] Adam: It’s a smaller gauge net, but we got a big gauge net currently deployed on Devil’s Track Lake.
[0:31:18 – 0:31:24] Adam: Joining me today on the water is the net master himself, Josh.
[0:31:25 – 0:31:26] Adam: This…
[0:31:27 – 0:31:40] Adam: For both of us, though, really the first attempt at whitefishing, at least for netting whitefish, something I’ve been wanting to try to do for a long time now.
[0:31:40 – 0:31:42] Adam: I’ve mentioned before in the show, I used to live on Poplar.
[0:31:45 – 0:31:48] Adam: That’s one of the other lakes you can whitefish net on.
[0:31:50 – 0:31:52] Adam: Never tried it there when I lived right on the dang lake.
[0:31:54 – 0:32:02] Adam: Those nets are not cheap, though, and, you know, kind of hard to come by because usually people who have them are using them.
[0:32:03 – 0:32:05] Adam: Season opened a week ago, I guess.
[0:32:07 – 0:32:10] Adam: Usually water temperatures would be a bit colder.
[0:32:12 – 0:32:13] Adam: It’s a warm one out here today.
[0:32:13 – 0:32:18] Adam: Current conditions here in the Pontiac Vibe says it’s 56 out.
[0:32:19 – 0:32:19] Adam: It’s sunny.
[0:32:21 – 0:32:26] Adam: And it’s a warm one for sure, light west wind it looks like.
[0:32:27 – 0:32:31] Adam: Tomorrow, today is Sunday, I should note.
[0:32:32 – 0:32:33] Adam: Jeez, holy moly.
[0:32:35 – 0:32:37] Adam: Saturday, November 5th?
[0:32:38 – 0:32:38] Adam: No, 6th.
[0:32:39 – 0:32:42] Adam: November 6th, coming to you live here on Tumble Home.
[0:32:43 – 0:32:45] Adam: Some early November whitefish netting.
[0:32:47 – 0:32:51] Adam: Yeah, water temperatures are reportedly in the mid to high 40s still.
[0:32:51 – 0:32:52] Adam: We didn’t actually check that.
[0:32:54 – 0:32:57] Adam: You’re allowed one net per license or whatever.
[0:32:58 – 0:32:59] Adam: You’ve got to pay a net fee.
[0:32:59 – 0:33:04] Adam: So Josh has the net fee paid, and the permit’s attached right to the darn net.
[0:33:05 – 0:33:06] Adam: It’s currently out there.
[0:33:08 – 0:33:10] Adam: It might be a decent west wind.
[0:33:10 – 0:33:12] Adam: Just got a pretty good look at the lake over there.
[0:33:14 – 0:33:19] Adam: but we’re kind of like not, we’re in the North shore, uh, nestled into a bit of a bay.
[0:33:20 – 0:33:28] Adam: And so I don’t think the wind is going to be much of a factor, but you got two of us, uh, should be pretty reasonable for like handling the boat and the net.
[0:33:29 – 0:33:31] Adam: Uh, anyways, we got one net out.
[0:33:31 – 0:33:32] Adam: Uh, Josh has a permit on that.
[0:33:32 – 0:33:32] Adam: We’re
[0:33:38 – 0:33:40] Adam: I think that’s all the requirements.
[0:33:40 – 0:33:41] Adam: The net can be 100 feet long.
[0:33:42 – 0:33:44] Adam: You can’t have two nets next to each other, though.
[0:33:45 – 0:33:48] Adam: If we had a second net out, we’d have to have it somewhere else on the lake, I guess.
[0:33:48 – 0:33:51] Adam: You’ve got to be in six feet of water or less.
[0:33:52 – 0:33:53] Adam: And so we had the depth finder out yesterday.
[0:33:53 – 0:33:59] Adam: We’re kind of in a graveled flat, which I guess is a good spot for them to spawn, which is the whole idea here.
[0:34:00 – 0:34:12] Adam: And, uh, so our net is essentially running from, uh, in towards shore at four feet of water out, out straight out away from the shrine all the way out to six feet of water.
[0:34:12 – 0:34:19] Adam: A lot of people out here on a beautiful Saturday, uh, Cook County.
[0:34:20 – 0:34:22] Adam: It is, I believe deer hunting opener as well.
[0:34:22 – 0:34:29] Adam: Seen a lot of trucks, uh, in unusual parking spots on the drive over and, uh,
[0:34:31 – 0:34:34] Adam: I didn’t hear any gunshots at the house this morning, though.
[0:34:35 – 0:34:40] Adam: So we’re not really in a real big… We’re a little too far inland for the deer hunting prime time zone.
[0:34:41 – 0:34:42] Adam: But I don’t know.
[0:34:42 – 0:34:46] Adam: I’ve heard gunshots around the house in the past during deer season.
[0:34:46 – 0:34:47] Adam: And we see deer.
[0:34:49 – 0:34:55] Adam: Anyhow, I’m making my way here to the landing for the rendezvous for day one check.
[0:34:55 – 0:34:55] Adam: Here’s the plan.
[0:34:55 – 0:34:56] Adam: I’ll lay it out for you.
[0:34:56 – 0:35:00] Adam: Last night we dropped the net in near sunset.
[0:35:00 – 0:35:04] Adam: You’re not allowed to jostle or lift these nets after dark.
[0:35:04 – 0:35:05] Adam: After dark.
[0:35:06 – 0:35:07] Adam: Oh, that’s naughty.
[0:35:08 – 0:35:13] Adam: Got to only tinker with the nets during daylight hours if you want to be legal.
[0:35:14 – 0:35:20] Adam: You need a big buoy with a flag, essentially, on one side, and that’s where the permit is attached, and then another little mini buoy marking the other end of the net.
[0:35:21 – 0:35:22] Adam: Anchor on both sides.
[0:35:23 – 0:35:28] Adam: And, yeah, like I said, it’s kind of running like a gate along the shoreline here.
[0:35:30 – 0:35:42] Adam: So, yeah, we put it out last night, had a beer, a few laughs, good times, and coming back at the allotted time this afternoon to check this net.
[0:35:43 – 0:35:44] Adam: Neither of us have ever checked a net.
[0:35:45 – 0:35:51] Adam: This should be comical and entertaining and, I would say, dare I say, educational.
[0:35:53 – 0:35:54] Adam: But, uh…
[0:35:55 – 0:36:01] Adam: Yeah, I’m not going to tell you exactly where we’re on on Devil’s Track, but Devil’s Track, it’s no secret, pretty good whitefish netting area.
[0:36:01 – 0:36:08] Adam: So we’re set in what appears to be a good spot on the North Shore where we can kind of access.
[0:36:08 – 0:36:11] Adam: And, yeah, we’re going to pull the net today, throw it back out.
[0:36:11 – 0:36:13] Adam: If we get any fish, that’s great.
[0:36:13 – 0:36:21] Adam: It’s probably a week too early, but this will be good practice in reasonable weather conditions just to get a feel for how to work these nets.
[0:36:22 – 0:36:23] Adam: I wouldn’t be surprised if we get one.
[0:36:24 – 0:36:30] SPEAKER_02: But I wouldn’t be surprised if we get nothing.
[0:36:33 – 0:36:35] Adam: This dude just walking right down the middle of the road.
[0:36:35 – 0:36:35] Adam: Hey-o.
[0:36:37 – 0:36:38] Adam: He’s wearing blaze orange.
[0:36:39 – 0:36:47] Adam: And, yeah, and then come back on Sunday, and it’s supposed to be even nicer tomorrow and even a little warmer, I think, tomorrow.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:50] Adam: That’s the report.
[0:36:50 – 0:36:51] Adam: Less wind, too.
[0:36:51 – 0:36:53] Adam: It’s going to be a gorgeous day on Sunday.
[0:36:53 – 0:36:56] Adam: You’re not allowed to have any other fishing tackle with you while netting.
[0:36:57 – 0:37:02] Adam: And there’s some pretty… Like I said, the season is set.
[0:37:02 – 0:37:06] Adam: Not always the same dates from what I can gather, but I don’t know.
[0:37:06 – 0:37:08] Adam: It’s open for like three or four weeks here, I guess.
[0:37:08 – 0:37:08] Adam: But…
[0:37:09 – 0:37:11] Adam: So we’ll see, you know, how this weekend goes.
[0:37:11 – 0:37:13] Adam: Maybe next week when we throw the net back in.
[0:37:13 – 0:37:14] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:37:14 – 0:37:17] Adam: I don’t really want to deal with it on the weekday.
[0:37:17 – 0:37:19] Adam: But it’s really not too far of a drive from town.
[0:37:19 – 0:37:27] Adam: So, I mean, if this ends up being successful, we might end up, you know, keeping it in longer.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:27] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:37:27 – 0:37:30] Adam: As long as you check it every day, you know, that’s the deal.
[0:37:32 – 0:37:38] Adam: We got a little, Josh has a nice little, like, 14-foot aluminum, I think it’s alumina craft.
[0:37:39 – 0:37:40] Adam: Alumina craft.
[0:37:40 – 0:37:41] Adam: Alumina craft.
[0:37:42 – 0:37:44] Adam: With a nice little five-horse on it.
[0:37:44 – 0:37:48] Adam: So we’re not even, we got some oars with us for tech paddling.
[0:37:48 – 0:37:55] Adam: But, you know, I’m about to get here, so I’m going to end this track and play us out with a little more Larna.
[0:37:55 – 0:37:57] Adam: Larna Del Rio.
[0:37:57 – 0:37:58] Adam: Larna Del Rio.
[0:38:02 – 0:38:05] Adam: But, yeah, we’ll, okay, I lied.
[0:38:05 – 0:38:07] Adam: We are off the pavement finally.
[0:38:09 – 0:38:14] Adam: Check back later after this session with day one results.
[0:38:16 – 0:38:17] Adam: Happy netting.
[0:38:17 – 0:38:19] Adam: Happy netting, everyone.
[0:38:20 – 0:38:23] SPEAKER_02: Get your jacket on, gentlemen.
[0:38:23 – 0:38:25] SPEAKER_02: Get into your truck and pick me up.
[0:38:49 – 0:38:55] Adam: All right, all right, all right, all right.
[0:38:55 – 0:39:02] Adam: This is your 2021 whitefish day one netting report.
[0:39:04 – 0:39:05] Adam: This is Adam.
[0:39:05 – 0:39:13] Adam: I’m coming to you live in the field from the Pontiac Vibe on my way home from day one out on Devil’s Track Lake.
[0:39:16 – 0:39:18] Adam: Pretty darn nice day out there.
[0:39:18 – 0:39:20] Adam: Still 56 degrees Fahrenheit here.
[0:39:21 – 0:39:28] Adam: And the actual process of checking the nets took about a half hour.
[0:39:28 – 0:39:34] Adam: There was some pretty decent west wind after all, but we’re in this little notch and it wasn’t too bad by the net.
[0:39:35 – 0:39:40] Adam: Able to pretty much control the boat by hanging onto the net is the idea there.
[0:39:41 – 0:39:44] Adam: And we got four.
[0:39:44 – 0:39:45] Adam: We got four whitefish.
[0:39:49 – 0:39:50] SPEAKER_02: Ow!
[0:39:51 – 0:40:01] Adam: I don’t want to live without whitefish.
[0:40:01 – 0:40:04] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:40:04 – 0:40:07] Adam: Whitefish netting is maybe my new favorite thing to do.
[0:40:09 – 0:40:14] Adam: And I think Josh and I just decided we’re not going to just be borrowing nets.
[0:40:14 – 0:40:18] Adam: I think we’re going to both get some nets because you can each have a net.
[0:40:19 – 0:40:21] Adam: So I think next year maybe we’ll be up to two nets.
[0:40:21 – 0:40:21] Adam: I’m in.
[0:40:22 – 0:40:24] Adam: Took one day of whitefish netting.
[0:40:25 – 0:40:26] Adam: I’m in.
[0:40:26 – 0:40:27] Adam: It’s a big timer.
[0:40:27 – 0:40:29] Adam: And I watched some videos last night on YouTube.
[0:40:30 – 0:40:31] Adam: Go check those out.
[0:40:34 – 0:40:35] Adam: Whitefish netting out of a canoe.
[0:40:36 – 0:40:36] Adam: It can be done.
[0:40:39 – 0:40:43] Adam: So I don’t think I mentioned the third lake, but it’s the Caribou by Clearwater.
[0:40:43 – 0:40:45] Adam: Apparently that’s open for whitefish netting.
[0:40:46 – 0:40:48] Adam: Poplar, of course, and Devil’s Track.
[0:40:48 – 0:40:55] Adam: If anybody wants to try whitefish netting in Cook County, those are the three that I, when I was reading the regs, you can check those out.
[0:40:55 – 0:40:57] Adam: But we got four today.
[0:40:57 – 0:40:57] Adam: I’m hooked.
[0:40:57 – 0:40:58] Adam: We’re going to each get a net.
[0:40:59 – 0:41:00] Adam: Some more blaze orange.
[0:41:00 – 0:41:02] Adam: There’s a lot of blaze orange out here.
[0:41:06 – 0:41:08] Adam: Yeah, we’re going to each get a net, I think, next year.
[0:41:09 – 0:41:10] Adam: And then we’ll really be in them.
[0:41:11 – 0:41:17] Adam: But we got four today, so I got a box with two whitefish behind me in the trunk.
[0:41:18 – 0:41:22] Adam: And I think I’m going to try and pickle them.
[0:41:23 – 0:41:24] Adam: Anybody ever done this?
[0:41:24 – 0:41:25] Adam: Anybody heard of this?
[0:41:25 – 0:41:26] Adam: Pickled fish.
[0:41:27 – 0:41:28] Adam: Brother, are you listening?
[0:41:28 – 0:41:29] Adam: I need the recipe.
[0:41:29 – 0:41:31] Adam: I need Grandma’s pickled fish recipe.
[0:41:31 – 0:41:34] Adam: Please send it via post.
[0:41:47 – 0:41:49] Adam: So, I mean, I’d say that’s a pretty good success.
[0:41:49 – 0:41:51] Adam: It was sunny out there.
[0:41:51 – 0:41:53] Adam: I got to work on my tan a little bit.
[0:41:53 – 0:41:57] Adam: I didn’t have to use the worst garden gloves I could find.
[0:41:57 – 0:41:58] Adam: That’s what I brought with.
[0:41:59 – 0:42:00] Adam: Didn’t even have to use the gloves.
[0:42:01 – 0:42:03] Adam: Here’s the trick and tip of the day.
[0:42:03 – 0:42:06] Adam: Because we’re going to be doing this a few more days, it turns out.
[0:42:06 – 0:42:08] Adam: So I don’t want to overdo it on this day one.
[0:42:08 – 0:42:11] Adam: But here’s the trick and tip of the day from the netters.
[0:42:11 – 0:42:12] Adam: Netter boys!
[0:42:14 – 0:42:18] Adam: Josh suggested this, but he’s like, bring the regular net.
[0:42:18 – 0:42:20] Adam: So I brought my regular fishing net.
[0:42:20 – 0:42:33] Adam: And so I would, like, whoever, we took turns with the fish or whatever, but whoever, you know, you’d hold the net under the, you’d pull the big net up, hold the little net under the fish, and then the other guy would work it out of the net into the other net.
[0:42:33 – 0:42:42] Adam: So you didn’t really have to, like, bring them fully into the boat the whole way, like mess up the net too bad or risk getting slimed.
[0:42:43 – 0:42:43] Adam: Whitefish.
[0:42:44 – 0:42:44] Adam: Very slimy.
[0:42:46 – 0:42:47] Adam: They’re a slimy one.
[0:42:48 – 0:42:50] Adam: But they’re a damn tasty fish.
[0:42:50 – 0:42:52] Adam: So, fresh whitefish.
[0:42:54 – 0:42:56] Adam: November open water fishing.
[0:42:57 – 0:43:00] Adam: You love to find new things to try.
[0:43:00 – 0:43:02] Adam: And it’s amazing how many different ways you can fish.
[0:43:03 – 0:43:05] Adam: But this is a new one for me at age 40 now.
[0:43:06 – 0:43:07] Adam: Whitefish netting.
[0:43:07 – 0:43:08] Adam: Who would have thunk?
[0:43:09 – 0:43:11] Adam: But anyways, that was a pretty good time.
[0:43:11 – 0:43:15] Adam: Tomorrow’s weather forecast looks even better than today’s somehow.
[0:43:15 – 0:43:18] Adam: The fish are definitely in the spot where we have the net set here.
[0:43:19 – 0:43:21] Adam: Apparently there’s a lot of other nets out, though.
[0:43:21 – 0:43:24] Adam: Reports are on the lake that a lot of people have nets out right now.
[0:43:26 – 0:43:28] Adam: So, you know, they must be going.
[0:43:28 – 0:43:33] Adam: I’m going to try and remember to bring a thermometer of some sort to actually get a water temperature reading tomorrow.
[0:43:35 – 0:43:43] Adam: It’s still been getting pretty chilly at night, and we’ve heard mid-40s, but I’d like to get an actual reading on that lake temp tomorrow.
[0:43:50 – 0:43:57] Adam: But, yeah, I will leave it there for now.
[0:43:58 – 0:43:59] Adam: Thank you for joining us here.
[0:44:01 – 0:44:03] Adam: I don’t know what this is going to become at this point.
[0:44:03 – 0:44:11] Adam: I was thinking this is going to be maybe a couple one-minute tracks for a short little white fishing, you know, mini episode.
[0:44:11 – 0:44:12] Adam: Maybe this is more.
[0:44:12 – 0:44:13] Adam: We will see.
[0:44:13 – 0:44:15] Adam: My gears are turning.
[0:44:16 – 0:44:17] Adam: Thank you for listening.
[0:44:18 – 0:44:20] Adam: As always, life is precious.
[0:44:21 – 0:44:22] Adam: Happy netting.
[0:44:27 – 0:44:52] Adam: okay welcome to the evening whitefish cleaning report coming to you live from the the fish cleaning board outside got two really nice looking 16 inch whitefish and i did watch a video on youtube on how to avoid the pin bone
[0:44:54 – 0:44:56] Adam: So we’re going to try that out.
[0:44:57 – 0:44:59] Adam: Got a sharp fillet knife here.
[0:45:01 – 0:45:05] Adam: Got a nice bowl of fresh water for the fillets.
[0:45:05 – 0:45:09] Adam: Probably am going to pan fry some tonight.
[0:45:09 – 0:45:11] Adam: I just can’t wait.
[0:45:11 – 0:45:12] Adam: I got to eat some tonight.
[0:45:13 – 0:45:18] Adam: But save some, eat some, and hopefully get a few more tomorrow for the pickling pile.
[0:45:19 – 0:45:23] Adam: But I’m going to set the mic down here and try and start on this one here.
[0:45:29 – 0:45:33] Adam: The guy in the video I watched just cut the whitefish head right off.
[0:45:34 – 0:45:36] Adam: I’m not going to do that.
[0:45:37 – 0:45:41] Adam: They’re quite slimy, so I ran them under the garden hose.
[0:45:44 – 0:45:46] Adam: Well, there’s no hose, just the spigot.
[0:45:48 – 0:46:10] Adam: didn’t really seem to do a whole lot for us so first cuts complete and now you want to angle up does that make sense you’re gonna angle up and avoid this pin bone so he’s making some noise
[0:46:12 – 0:46:20] Adam: Um, you know, it should be pretty obvious if I haven’t achieved my goal here that we can come back and get any of those out.
[0:46:22 – 0:46:27] Adam: Because, uh, I haven’t cleaned a whitefish in probably seven, eight years at this point.
[0:46:27 – 0:46:34] Adam: I just don’t get after them a lot and, uh, hate to say it, but I don’t have a lot of experience with a whitefish.
[0:46:36 – 0:46:39] Adam: Um, but I’d have, they’re damn tasty though.
[0:46:40 – 0:46:42] Adam: So I’m pretty excited to eat one of these tonight.
[0:46:45 – 0:46:46] Adam: It is still very nice out here.
[0:46:47 – 0:46:50] Adam: We’re almost at sunset back at home here cleaning these.
[0:46:50 – 0:46:53] Adam: And there we go.
[0:46:54 – 0:47:05] Adam: So I don’t know if we’ve actually achieved what we set out to do with the pin bone, but I think I was probably, I do think I was a little like,
[0:47:06 – 0:47:08] Adam: too aggressive on that first angle cut.
[0:47:09 – 0:47:10] Adam: I don’t detect any bone there.
[0:47:10 – 0:47:14] Adam: Yeah, there it is.
[0:47:14 – 0:47:15] Adam: You can feel it on the fish itself.
[0:47:15 – 0:47:16] Adam: Let’s see if we can hear this.
[0:47:22 – 0:47:23] Adam: Over the barking of the neighbor dog.
[0:47:23 – 0:47:25] Adam: So there’s your pin bone.
[0:47:28 – 0:47:32] Adam: And got a pretty nice fly off this 16 inch fish here.
[0:47:34 – 0:47:35] Adam: We’re going to conclude the night
[0:47:36 – 0:47:37] Adam: cleaning report here and
[0:47:38 – 0:47:39] Adam: We’ll check back tomorrow.
[0:47:39 – 0:47:45] Adam: I’ve got a few things noted down that I would like to mention tomorrow as we head out for day two.
[0:47:46 – 0:47:57] Adam: But I will tomorrow give you the report on how the frying of the fish went and were there any bones in the fish that you ate.
[0:47:58 – 0:48:01] Adam: Also, talking about the other kind of fish you can net for.
[0:48:02 – 0:48:06] Adam: And, of course, I made a note to remember to grab the thermometer, so…
[0:48:07 – 0:48:12] Adam: We’ll check back with you on Sunday for day two of White Fishing Camp 2021.
[0:48:12 – 0:48:16] Adam: This has been Francois Lacastore, out on the deck.
[0:48:26 – 0:48:33] UNKNOWN: Sailor, how will you fly?
[0:48:33 – 0:48:35] UNKNOWN: Maybe untie me.
[0:48:44 – 0:48:53] Adam: Welcome, welcome friends to day two of my new favorite hobby, whitefish netting.
[0:48:54 – 0:48:55] Adam: Day two of whitefish camp.
[0:48:56 – 0:49:02] Adam: We’re not really camping, but we’re not deer hunting either, so I don’t know what you call this November stuff.
[0:49:02 – 0:49:04] Adam: I think it’s whitefish camp.
[0:49:08 – 0:49:11] Adam: We’re moseying our way on over to where we have the boat stashed.
[0:49:14 – 0:49:15] Adam: It is Sunday.
[0:49:18 – 0:49:18] Adam: Take it easy.
[0:49:19 – 0:49:23] Adam: It is Sunday, November 7th, 2021.
[0:49:25 – 0:49:27] Adam: Your Ron Schara Outdoor Calendar fact of the day.
[0:49:29 – 0:49:30] Adam: All you need is love.
[0:49:31 – 0:49:31] Adam: That’s the fact.
[0:49:35 – 0:49:38] Adam: Packers are playing in Kansas City later today.
[0:49:39 – 0:49:41] Adam: We should be done with the netting operation and
[0:49:43 – 0:49:50] Adam: I think we’re going to find ourselves a pint of cold beer and a large television and see what Jordan Love can do.
[0:49:51 – 0:49:54] Adam: Josh and I are both Packers fans, of course.
[0:49:56 – 0:50:06] Adam: And not the matchup I thought we were going to get this beautiful Sunday here on the North Shore, but excited to see what Jordan Love can do.
[0:50:07 – 0:50:09] Adam: Not going to delve into the fact that
[0:50:11 – 0:50:16] Adam: Rogers is taking horse paste on the advice of Joe Rogan.
[0:50:16 – 0:50:19] Adam: We’re not going to discuss that any further.
[0:50:21 – 0:50:22] Adam: But we are excited for Jordan Love.
[0:50:23 – 0:50:25] Adam: All you need is love, tumble homies.
[0:50:28 – 0:50:30] Adam: And as I mentioned, another beautiful day.
[0:50:33 – 0:50:35] Adam: I think, you know what, no, I’m not done.
[0:50:36 – 0:50:38] Adam: I think Love’s going to throw for three.
[0:50:39 – 0:50:40] Adam: No, throw for two and run one in.
[0:50:42 – 0:50:44] Adam: And I traded Rodgers off my fantasy team.
[0:50:45 – 0:50:48] Adam: I’m very disappointed, and I traded him off the team.
[0:50:48 – 0:50:50] Adam: I don’t think it’s being a very good leader.
[0:50:51 – 0:50:53] Adam: All right, I’ll leave it at that.
[0:50:53 – 0:50:54] Adam: But I am excited.
[0:50:54 – 0:50:56] Adam: I picked up Jordan Love, and I traded away Rodgers.
[0:50:57 – 0:50:58] Adam: Traded Rodgers off.
[0:50:59 – 0:51:05] Adam: God loves starting, and I’m playing against the Chiefs fan, so it’s going to be a pretty exciting game.
[0:51:07 – 0:51:10] Adam: Are we talking about whitefish, or are we talking about fantasy football?
[0:51:12 – 0:51:18] Adam: But Josh and I are going to watch the game later, but first things first, how many fish are in that net?
[0:51:19 – 0:51:27] Adam: I fried up some of the whitefish last night, fresh whitefish, fried in butter with panko breading.
[0:51:28 – 0:51:29] Adam: Increable.
[0:51:31 – 0:51:34] Adam: High marks.
[0:51:35 – 0:51:38] Adam: I’d say we fried up like maybe one.
[0:51:39 – 0:51:41] Adam: One of the whitefish got fried up.
[0:51:41 – 0:51:45] Adam: The other one got cleaned up the same way and is just waiting in the fridge.
[0:51:45 – 0:51:49] Adam: Maybe we get a few more and we do a batch of pickled fish or maybe not.
[0:51:49 – 0:51:50] Adam: We just fry that one up too.
[0:51:50 – 0:51:51] Adam: We’ll see.
[0:51:51 – 0:51:52] Adam: It’s pretty warm.
[0:51:52 – 0:51:53] Adam: 56 degrees here again.
[0:51:55 – 0:51:55] Adam: We’ve arrived at
[0:51:57 – 0:51:58] Adam: Well, not quite.
[0:51:58 – 0:51:58] Adam: We’re almost there.
[0:51:59 – 0:52:01] Adam: We’ve just peeled off the pavement.
[0:52:01 – 0:52:02] Adam: Turn that music down.
[0:52:04 – 0:52:05] Adam: Josh may or may not be here.
[0:52:05 – 0:52:07] Adam: I’m actually on time today.
[0:52:07 – 0:52:08] Adam: I’m a little early.
[0:52:11 – 0:52:12] Adam: Cruising on in here.
[0:52:12 – 0:52:13] Adam: Yeah, we got the boat stashed.
[0:52:13 – 0:52:15] Adam: It’s 56 degrees and sunny.
[0:52:15 – 0:52:18] Adam: It looks like the wind’s about a zero out of the variable.
[0:52:20 – 0:52:23] Adam: I couldn’t imagine more ideal conditions.
[0:52:24 – 0:52:25] Adam: to be checking a white vegetation net.
[0:52:26 – 0:52:29] Adam: Although I’m guessing the like warm temps is not helping our water temperatures.
[0:52:30 – 0:52:34] Adam: I guess people want them a little colder, more action the colder the water gets, I guess.
[0:52:34 – 0:52:37] Adam: But I don’t know, we caught some yesterday, it was 56.
[0:52:38 – 0:52:41] Adam: But I’m guessing it’s gonna be a pleasant afternoon in the boat.
[0:52:44 – 0:52:47] Adam: And Cisco, remember them?
[0:52:47 – 0:52:49] Adam: So that’s the other thing you can net.
[0:52:49 – 0:52:50] Adam: I’ve never done any of this, this is all new.
[0:52:50 – 0:52:53] Adam: You get a smaller gauge net, you can go for Cisco, East Pike.
[0:52:55 – 0:52:59] Adam: and even Brulee.
[0:52:59 – 0:53:00] Adam: Brulee is…
[0:53:00 – 0:53:01] Adam: So there’s a couple.
[0:53:01 – 0:53:07] Adam: You can whitefish and caribou over by Clearwater, and you can cisco net out of Brulee.
[0:53:07 – 0:53:09] Adam: So there’s some, like, Boundary Waters options here.
[0:53:09 – 0:53:10] Adam: Anybody listening?
[0:53:10 – 0:53:11] Adam: Hey, you done this?
[0:53:12 – 0:53:13] Adam: Is this something people do?
[0:53:13 – 0:53:15] Adam: I’ve heard of people deer hunting.
[0:53:15 – 0:53:21] Adam: I’d believe deer hunting in the Boundary Waters before I believe this is something people, like, go paddle into Brule and net cisco, but…
[0:53:22 – 0:53:25] Adam: If there’s a season, I’m sure there’s a will and a way.
[0:53:25 – 0:53:29] Adam: Somebody out there’s doing it.
[0:53:29 – 0:53:33] Adam: So yeah, there’s the other thing you can net.
[0:53:33 – 0:53:35] Adam: This whole thing is bizarre to me.
[0:53:35 – 0:53:36] Adam: Oh, he’s here already.
[0:53:36 – 0:53:37] Adam: Josh is always early for fishing.
[0:53:40 – 0:53:41] Adam: We’re gonna roll right in here.
[0:53:42 – 0:53:44] Adam: There’s a little more wind on the lake than I thought.
[0:53:53 – 0:53:56] Adam: Yeah, I’d say it’s nicer today than yesterday.
[0:53:59 – 0:53:59] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[0:54:01 – 0:54:03] Adam: Do whitefish have good eyesight, Josh?
[0:54:04 – 0:54:05] SPEAKER_02: I think so.
[0:54:05 – 0:54:09] Adam: They sure look like they’ve got big eyes in relation to their heads.
[0:54:09 – 0:54:11] Adam: And they’re kind of like they’re on the sides and they’re big.
[0:54:11 – 0:54:19] Adam: But when you look at them head on, like I was rinsing one off in the hose last night before I cleaned them, it looks like they can see forward too.
[0:54:19 – 0:54:22] Adam: It looks like they’d have an amazing range of vision.
[0:54:22 – 0:54:23] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
[0:54:24 – 0:54:25] Adam: However, they do swim in the nets.
[0:54:26 – 0:54:29] Adam: Well, they’re horny and just, you know, doing.
[0:54:31 – 0:54:34] Adam: Got to spread the eggs and the milk.
[0:54:35 – 0:54:35] SPEAKER_02: Yep.
[0:54:36 – 0:54:37] Adam: So, yeah, they’re cruising.
[0:54:37 – 0:54:38] Adam: They don’t care if they can see it.
[0:54:38 – 0:54:41] Adam: But, I don’t know, we do have the monofilament net out there.
[0:54:42 – 0:54:44] Adam: I was looking at nets, and you can get them with, like, a fiber.
[0:54:44 – 0:54:50] Adam: Like you were saying, you know, somebody that’s using, like, a braided line, but it seems like they can maybe see that.
[0:54:50 – 0:54:55] Adam: That appears to be from reports, yeah.
[0:54:56 – 0:54:59] Adam: Yeah, that mono net worked pretty good, though, yesterday.
[0:54:59 – 0:55:03] Adam: So how many fish do you think are going to be in the net today, Josh?
[0:55:03 – 0:55:03] SPEAKER_02: 25.
[0:55:03 – 0:55:04] SPEAKER_02: Wow.
[0:55:04 – 0:55:09] Adam: We might be late for kickoff if that happens.
[0:55:09 – 0:55:11] Adam: Did you eat any of the fish last night?
[0:55:12 – 0:55:12] Adam: No.
[0:55:12 – 0:55:14] Adam: I did clean them, but I didn’t eat any.
[0:55:15 – 0:55:15] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:55:16 – 0:55:17] SPEAKER_02: They’re very tasty.
[0:55:17 – 0:55:18] SPEAKER_02: You had one?
[0:55:18 – 0:55:18] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[0:55:18 – 0:55:18] UNKNOWN: Nice.
[0:55:19 – 0:55:19] Adam: Yeah.
[0:55:20 – 0:55:21] Adam: Pretty good.
[0:55:21 – 0:55:22] Adam: All right.
[0:55:22 – 0:55:24] Adam: Well, we’re going to get our stuff together and get out on the water.
[0:55:25 – 0:55:27] Adam: We’ll check back with you once we arrive at the net.
[0:55:31 – 0:55:32] SPEAKER_02: All right.
[0:55:33 – 0:55:35] Adam: Cruising up to the buoy here.
[0:55:37 – 0:55:39] Adam: There’s something for sure in that net way down there.
[0:55:39 – 0:55:41] Adam: It looks like something nice.
[0:55:42 – 0:55:44] Adam: Maybe a pike kind of tangled in there.
[0:55:44 – 0:55:44] Adam: It looks big.
[0:55:46 – 0:55:48] Adam: We’re going to take the water temp reading.
[0:55:50 – 0:55:52] Adam: Sorry, Josh.
[0:55:52 – 0:55:53] Adam: Grab the buoy.
[0:55:53 – 0:55:54] Adam: What are you doing?
[0:55:55 – 0:56:03] Adam: Yeah, there’s something tangled up in there.
[0:56:07 – 0:56:09] Adam: Looking like 46, 45.
[0:56:10 – 0:56:11] Adam: Okay.
[0:56:11 – 0:56:20] Adam: According to the DNR page, that’s when they’re starting to… 44.7?
[0:56:20 – 0:56:24] Adam: That looks about right.
[0:56:26 – 0:56:27] Adam: All right, I’m satisfied with that.
[0:56:27 – 0:56:30] Adam: 44.7 is the water temp.
[0:56:31 – 0:56:32] Adam: We for sure got something down there.
[0:56:34 – 0:56:37] Adam: I was hoping we weren’t ever going to have to deal with the pike in the net.
[0:56:37 – 0:56:38] Adam: Oh, gosh.
[0:56:38 – 0:56:40] SPEAKER_02: That looked pretty redfin to me.
[0:56:41 – 0:56:41] Adam: Maybe it’s a big old.
[0:56:42 – 0:56:43] SPEAKER_02: I think it’s a big old whitefish.
[0:56:43 – 0:56:44] SPEAKER_02: It might be a big old whitefish.
[0:56:44 – 0:56:46] Adam: All right, well, I’m going to put this in my pocket and get to work here.
[0:56:46 – 0:56:56] Adam: I’m just going to leave that on while we pull this net up.
[0:56:58 – 0:56:58] Adam: You got one?
[0:57:00 – 0:57:00] Adam: Oh, sure.
[0:57:01 – 0:57:03] Adam: Oh, yeah, there’s one right here right away.
[0:57:04 – 0:57:05] Adam: Which way does he want to go?
[0:57:05 – 0:57:13] Adam: I think this side.
[0:57:13 – 0:57:14] Adam: Okay.
[0:57:14 – 0:57:16] Adam: I think this side is the pole.
[0:57:17 – 0:57:28] Adam: So Josh has got the net under him already because he’s just got to basically get him out of the gill part and then push him through as best he can.
[0:57:28 – 0:57:29] Adam: Uh-oh.
[0:57:34 – 0:57:37] Adam: All right, so he’s pretty tangled, this one.
[0:57:39 – 0:57:41] Adam: Yeah, it gets in the gill.
[0:57:41 – 0:57:42] Adam: I mean, it’s a gill net, right?
[0:57:42 – 0:57:44] Adam: So that’s the whole point, but…
[0:57:46 – 0:57:48] Adam: Boy, this guy’s probably the worst one so far.
[0:57:49 – 0:57:51] Adam: He’s a real serial offender, this one.
[0:57:51 – 0:57:54] Adam: I think I gotta clear him out of this part here.
[0:57:54 – 0:57:58] Adam: There we go, oh yeah.
[0:57:58 – 0:58:00] Adam: Then they wanna slide that direction.
[0:58:01 – 0:58:03] Adam: There we go, he’s in the net.
[0:58:04 – 0:58:06] Adam: I’ll hold on to this.
[0:58:08 – 0:58:12] Adam: Oh yeah, give him the thump.
[0:58:12 – 0:58:14] Adam: You got the quiver going, that’s one.
[0:58:15 – 0:58:18] Adam: That’s an authentic thump on the bench there, listeners.
[0:58:20 – 0:58:21] Adam: How did we get this far down already?
[0:58:23 – 0:58:23] Erik: I guess so.
[0:58:25 – 0:58:26] Adam: What’s the size of this net?
[0:58:26 – 0:58:28] Adam: I think it’s 100 foot.
[0:58:28 – 0:58:30] Adam: It’s 100 foot by three, but what’s the gauge?
[0:58:30 – 0:58:31] Adam: We got one here.
[0:58:32 – 0:58:33] Adam: What’s the gauge?
[0:58:33 – 0:58:34] Adam: I think it’s two and a half.
[0:58:35 – 0:58:35] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:58:35 – 0:58:36] Adam: Two inch, two and a half.
[0:58:36 – 0:58:37] Adam: Uh-oh.
[0:58:37 – 0:58:38] Adam: Oh, God.
[0:58:38 – 0:58:40] Adam: He’s… Oh, God.
[0:58:40 – 0:58:41] Adam: This guy’s going nuts.
[0:58:42 – 0:58:43] Adam: I’m kind of sideways here.
[0:58:44 – 0:58:45] Adam: Sorry, bud.
[0:58:46 – 0:58:47] Adam: I’m doing my best.
[0:58:47 – 0:58:49] Adam: So you’re just kind of like grabbing the net and going along.
[0:58:49 – 0:58:50] Adam: Each end is anchored.
[0:58:52 – 0:58:56] Adam: But the wind’s kind of blowing us down the net today instead of across it.
[0:58:57 – 0:58:57] Adam: I don’t know.
[0:58:57 – 0:58:58] Adam: Which side do you think?
[0:58:59 – 0:58:59] Adam: Let’s get him there.
[0:58:59 – 0:59:01] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:59:03 – 0:59:03] Adam: He’s barely…
[0:59:04 – 0:59:06] SPEAKER_02: This guy’s… Yeah, he’s almost getting through the net.
[0:59:06 – 0:59:07] Adam: Yeah.
[0:59:07 – 0:59:09] Adam: This guy almost slid right through.
[0:59:09 – 0:59:09] Adam: Oh, yeah.
[0:59:10 – 0:59:10] Adam: Free.
[0:59:11 – 0:59:12] Adam: Freedom ain’t free, buddy.
[0:59:12 – 0:59:12] Adam: That’s two.
[0:59:13 – 0:59:14] Adam: That’s two.
[0:59:16 – 0:59:19] Adam: Um… Good night, sweet prince.
[0:59:19 – 0:59:22] Adam: Good… Well… Well, good night.
[0:59:23 – 0:59:23] Adam: Okay.
[0:59:25 – 0:59:25] Adam: Good job, Josh.
[0:59:28 – 0:59:28] Adam: Um…
[0:59:29 – 0:59:29] Adam: Yeah.
[0:59:29 – 0:59:36] Adam: And there’s, you know, so you’re allowed this bigger gauge for the white fish, but I was looking at nets and then you can get them in bigger gauges than this.
[0:59:36 – 0:59:39] Adam: Even, I think it’s like two is the minimum or something.
[0:59:39 – 0:59:40] Adam: We’ll have to look that up.
[0:59:41 – 0:59:42] Adam: Make sure we fact check ourselves on the fly.
[0:59:42 – 0:59:47] Adam: I’m at coming up to maybe a Jagundo.
[0:59:50 – 0:59:51] Adam: Did he escape?
[0:59:51 – 0:59:52] SPEAKER_02: I don’t know.
[0:59:53 – 0:59:54] SPEAKER_02: The way he was at the very top.
[0:59:54 – 0:59:55] Adam: He was thrashing.
[0:59:55 – 0:59:56] Adam: Where did he go?
[0:59:56 – 0:59:57] SPEAKER_02: I don’t know.
[0:59:57 – 0:59:57] Adam: What?
[0:59:58 – 0:59:59] SPEAKER_02: Might have jumped out.
[1:00:00 – 1:00:01] Adam: That’s crazy.
[1:00:01 – 1:00:02] Adam: Oh, no.
[1:00:02 – 1:00:02] Adam: There he is.
[1:00:02 – 1:00:02] Adam: No, no.
[1:00:03 – 1:00:04] Adam: Oh, gosh.
[1:00:05 – 1:00:08] Adam: I think it is a big old pike, dude.
[1:00:09 – 1:00:09] Adam: Oh, God.
[1:00:10 – 1:00:11] Adam: Let’s get a…
[1:00:11 – 1:00:12] Adam: It’s a big goddamn pike.
[1:00:13 – 1:00:14] Adam: Bleep that.
[1:00:14 – 1:00:17] Adam: What do you want to do about this?
[1:00:17 – 1:00:19] Adam: You’re going to have to… Deal with him?
[1:00:19 – 1:00:20] SPEAKER_02: Deal with him.
[1:00:20 – 1:00:22] Adam: You want to try and net him right away?
[1:00:22 – 1:00:23] Adam: Oh, God.
[1:00:23 – 1:00:26] Adam: He’s got like the black cable like under his gills.
[1:00:27 – 1:00:27] Adam: Oh, dear.
[1:00:28 – 1:00:29] Adam: Oh, God.
[1:00:30 – 1:00:31] Adam: He’s a pretty nice one.
[1:00:31 – 1:00:31] SPEAKER_02: He is.
[1:00:33 – 1:00:34] Adam: Boy, he’s really stuck.
[1:00:35 – 1:00:39] Adam: Holy crap.
[1:00:40 – 1:00:40] SPEAKER_02: Hold on.
[1:00:43 – 1:00:44] Adam: Holy crap, man.
[1:00:45 – 1:00:46] Adam: We’re not…
[1:00:46 – 1:00:48] Adam: Okay, he’s got the net under him.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:48] Adam: Hold on.
[1:00:48 – 1:00:50] Adam: I’m going to pull this net over to him.
[1:00:51 – 1:00:56] Adam: No, but you’re not… Just to be clear, this ain’t legal.
[1:00:57 – 1:00:58] Adam: Holy shit.
[1:00:58 – 1:00:59] Adam: Bleep that.
[1:00:59 – 1:00:59] Adam: Sorry.
[1:01:01 – 1:01:01] Adam: Explicit.
[1:01:03 – 1:01:05] Adam: That is one of the nicer pike I’ve seen.
[1:01:05 – 1:01:10] Adam: I mean, that’s a wow.
[1:01:12 – 1:01:14] Adam: Yeah, I thought that was a pike from a distance.
[1:01:14 – 1:01:16] Adam: It looked too big, but…
[1:01:17 – 1:01:20] Adam: Josh is sort of lurking them backwards, it looks like.
[1:01:20 – 1:01:21] Adam: He’s very caught in his gillies.
[1:01:21 – 1:01:26] Adam: But, yeah, legally you’ve got to let these guys go, and he looks to be feisty and okay.
[1:01:27 – 1:01:29] Adam: Josh has just done an expert maneuver.
[1:01:29 – 1:01:29] Adam: I’ve got the net.
[1:01:30 – 1:01:32] Adam: Oh, my God, he’s gotten by like one tooth still.
[1:01:33 – 1:01:35] Adam: He hasn’t even had to touch the gill plate.
[1:01:35 – 1:01:36] Adam: You want to get a picture with this one?
[1:01:36 – 1:01:41] Adam: I’m going to let the net just go, and we should drift away from it for a sec here.
[1:01:41 – 1:01:42] Adam: I want to get a picture of this.
[1:01:45 – 1:01:47] Adam: Maybe we should tighten it up, though, and we’ll check that end.
[1:01:47 – 1:01:49] Adam: But, yeah, we’ve got to get a picture of this.
[1:01:49 – 1:01:50] Adam: Hold up.
[1:01:51 – 1:01:52] Adam: This is a beaut, folks.
[1:01:53 – 1:01:54] Adam: All righty, I’m ready.
[1:01:57 – 1:02:00] SPEAKER_02: That is… Holy fuck, man.
[1:02:01 – 1:02:01] Adam: Wow.
[1:02:07 – 1:02:08] Adam: Wowee.
[1:02:09 – 1:02:09] Adam: Alrighty.
[1:02:09 – 1:02:11] Adam: That’s 30.
[1:02:12 – 1:02:13] Adam: You got to sort of get them on the tape.
[1:02:14 – 1:02:15] Adam: I mean, that’s 36 all day.
[1:02:15 – 1:02:16] Adam: Is it 38?
[1:02:16 – 1:02:18] SPEAKER_02: This goes to 32.
[1:02:18 – 1:02:21] SPEAKER_02: I would say it’s a little, maybe like 34.
[1:02:21 – 1:02:23] Adam: He’s so fat though.
[1:02:23 – 1:02:24] Adam: It looks like he’s been eating nothing but white fish.
[1:02:29 – 1:02:29] Adam: Wow.
[1:02:30 – 1:02:31] Adam: There you go.
[1:02:31 – 1:02:32] Adam: And, yeah, and he’s gone.
[1:02:33 – 1:02:33] Adam: Stay out of our net.
[1:02:33 – 1:02:34] Adam: Stay out of the net.
[1:02:34 – 1:02:43] Adam: Maybe we should have, this is like when you get a, this is like when you get a squirrel and like you gotta like, we should have, yeah we should have motored him over across the, away from our net.
[1:02:45 – 1:03:09] Adam: pretty funny all right so uh that’s how you do it that’s the professional method uh so that’s if you’re counting at home scoring at home that was two looks to be about the same size as yesterday a white fish 16 16 inch white fish give or take an inch and then uh a big yeah he’s gonna put him on the tape right now i i had 16 on him that’s almost 17 almost
[1:03:13 – 1:03:21] Adam: And then like a 33-inch pike, what is fat is a can of beans, or the big one.
[1:03:21 – 1:03:24] Adam: I’m talking fat is the big food service can of beans.
[1:03:25 – 1:03:26] Adam: You know the one.
[1:03:26 – 1:03:30] Adam: Feeds a whole regiment of netters at night in camp.
[1:03:32 – 1:03:36] Adam: All right, well, we’re going to go back and see what happens when you’re pulling yourself along this thing.
[1:03:36 – 1:03:37] Adam: So it’s each end’s anchored.
[1:03:39 – 1:03:46] Adam: So, but like us just pulling ourselves along in the, in the little 14 foot boat here, it kind of like bows it out.
[1:03:46 – 1:03:51] Adam: So I think we’re going to grab the one end here and then kind of motor it back in towards the shallows.
[1:03:52 – 1:03:55] Adam: And this is the end we had the pike on was on the shallow end.
[1:03:56 – 1:03:57] Adam: Man, that was a beaut.
[1:03:58 – 1:04:05] Adam: And then, yeah, the two whitefish were over on the, over by the buoy out, out towards about six feet is the limit you’re allowed.
[1:04:05 – 1:04:05] Adam: So.
[1:04:06 – 1:04:12] Adam: We did use electronics on the first day to set it, just to make sure we didn’t exceed six feet.
[1:04:14 – 1:04:16] Adam: But wow, that was pretty cool.
[1:04:16 – 1:04:23] Adam: All right, we’re gonna pull these nets and fix them up here, and then we’ll meet you back on shore for celebratory beer, I think.
[1:04:24 – 1:04:25] SPEAKER_02: Hoosah, hoosah!
[1:04:28 – 1:04:29] Adam: Instant addendum.
[1:04:31 – 1:04:33] Adam: So we were joking we should have motored that pike away.
[1:04:33 – 1:04:34] Adam: Not even kidding.
[1:04:34 – 1:04:41] Adam: Like in the minute it took us to get back over here and to pull up this end of the net.
[1:04:41 – 1:04:45] Adam: Sure enough, he’s literally in the like literally the same spot in the net somehow.
[1:04:46 – 1:04:47] Adam: He’s got it caught on a tooth.
[1:04:48 – 1:04:50] Adam: I didn’t even bring my pliers with me either.
[1:04:50 – 1:04:53] Adam: I had a pliers yesterday and I was like, I don’t need this pliers.
[1:04:56 – 1:04:59] Adam: Okay, he’s got him unhooked again.
[1:04:59 – 1:05:04] Adam: So we are legit, this is the same fish almost for sure.
[1:05:04 – 1:05:05] Adam: Do you want me to hold him like in the water?
[1:05:06 – 1:05:07] SPEAKER_02: Wow, that’s fat.
[1:05:08 – 1:05:10] Adam: And then you want to just, you just want to kind of motor troll us?
[1:05:12 – 1:05:13] Adam: Oh, that’s a big one.
[1:05:14 – 1:05:14] Adam: You idiot.
[1:05:15 – 1:05:17] Adam: All right, we’re going to go release this same fish twice.
[1:05:18 – 1:05:19] Adam: Does that mean we each got it?
[1:05:19 – 1:05:21] Adam: Well, Josh unhooked it twice.
[1:05:21 – 1:05:26] Adam: You just had the best day of pike fishing I’ve seen all year.
[1:05:26 – 1:05:26] Adam: Yep.
[1:05:26 – 1:05:28] Adam: Two 33-inch pike within a minute.
[1:05:29 – 1:05:30] Adam: It may or may not be the same fish.
[1:05:31 – 1:05:33] Adam: Oh, I got it.
[1:05:33 – 1:05:34] SPEAKER_02: This is silly.
[1:05:42 – 1:05:45] SPEAKER_02: Were we too sure of a sign?
[1:05:50 – 1:05:56] SPEAKER_02: If you need to, you can keep time on me.
[1:05:59 – 1:06:00] Adam: Good morning.
[1:06:02 – 1:06:02] Adam: Tumble homies.
[1:06:03 – 1:06:03] Adam: Good morning.
[1:06:06 – 1:06:07] Adam: Day three.
[1:06:08 – 1:06:10] Adam: Whitefish camp.
[1:06:11 – 1:06:11] Adam: Reporting.
[1:06:12 – 1:06:19] Adam: Brought to you by a large mug of piping hot coffee.
[1:06:22 – 1:06:25] Adam: We’re departing the fishing grounds this morning.
[1:06:26 – 1:06:33] Adam: It is 840ish or so.
[1:06:33 – 1:06:37] Adam: 44 degrees and still sunny and still calm.
[1:06:37 – 1:06:38] Adam: It was a beautiful morning on the lake.
[1:06:43 – 1:06:49] Adam: Got four nice whitefish today on the morning check.
[1:06:50 – 1:06:55] Adam: We’re both working all day, and it’s going to be dark by the time we get done with work, so we had to check them before work today.
[1:06:56 – 1:06:58] Adam: Josh is off to work on some plumbing.
[1:06:59 – 1:07:08] Adam: I got to get on down to the office and order up some scallions and probably some mixed greens.
[1:07:09 – 1:07:10] Adam: A few other things.
[1:07:12 – 1:07:13] Adam: So the morning check.
[1:07:14 – 1:07:14] Adam: How’s it going to go?
[1:07:14 – 1:07:18] Adam: The net was just barely checked not too long ago, but there was four in there.
[1:07:19 – 1:07:22] Adam: And then we started on the deep end like usual.
[1:07:25 – 1:07:34] Adam: And there was like three of them right in a clump, like right next to the buoy in the deep side today, which is the first time we’ve had that happen.
[1:07:37 – 1:07:44] Adam: And then we made our way down, and then there was one more nice one down on the shallow end too.
[1:07:44 – 1:07:45] Adam: Zero pike today.
[1:07:45 – 1:07:47] Adam: The net was in pretty good shape.
[1:07:49 – 1:07:51] Adam: No buoys tangled or anything.
[1:07:55 – 1:07:57] Adam: There’s always people walking on this road.
[1:07:58 – 1:07:58] Adam: You got to watch it.
[1:08:00 – 1:08:01] Adam: So, yeah, it’s Monday morning.
[1:08:02 – 1:08:04] Adam: Three days in now we’ve had 10.
[1:08:05 – 1:08:06] Adam: That’s 10.
[1:08:06 – 1:08:08] Adam: That puts us up to 10 whitefish on the trip.
[1:08:08 – 1:08:09] Adam: Is this right?
[1:08:09 – 1:08:13] Adam: Four, two, and another four.
[1:08:14 – 1:08:16] Adam: Plus that big pike on the Sunday.
[1:08:16 – 1:08:17] Adam: Pretty neat.
[1:08:18 – 1:08:21] Adam: So we’re hauling them.
[1:08:21 – 1:08:22] Adam: We’re going to leave it in.
[1:08:22 – 1:08:23] Adam: The net’s still in.
[1:08:23 – 1:08:24] Adam: We’re going to come back.
[1:08:24 – 1:08:30] Adam: So tomorrow I don’t have to work as late, so I think we’re going to be able to get back here and check them
[1:08:31 – 1:08:34] Adam: at the end of the day, closer to sunset on Tuesday is the plan.
[1:08:36 – 1:08:36] Adam: So that’s nice.
[1:08:37 – 1:08:40] Adam: So it’s gonna have a nice long soak here on this next day.
[1:08:41 – 1:08:43] Adam: And then, it looks like it’s gonna be nice tomorrow.
[1:08:47 – 1:08:47] Adam: Is this thing on?
[1:08:49 – 1:08:53] Adam: Looks like it’s gonna be nice tomorrow, but then like Wednesday looks like it’s 110% chance of sleet.
[1:08:56 – 1:09:01] Adam: Like a bunch of rain, and then mixing the… What the hell is this?
[1:09:02 – 1:09:03] Adam: It’s a wild lab.
[1:09:04 – 1:09:05] Adam: Go home.
[1:09:05 – 1:09:07] Adam: It’s just a big, fat lab.
[1:09:07 – 1:09:08] Adam: You idiot.
[1:09:08 – 1:09:09] Adam: Get out of the road.
[1:09:12 – 1:09:14] Adam: Yeah, we’re in a residential neighborhood.
[1:09:14 – 1:09:17] Adam: I mean, Devil’s Track Lake is pretty much entirely in a residential neighborhood.
[1:09:17 – 1:09:18] Adam: Here’s some more people.
[1:09:18 – 1:09:19] Adam: Here’s a jogger.
[1:09:23 – 1:09:27] Adam: I’ve lost my entire train of thought to that wild Labrador.
[1:09:31 – 1:09:36] Adam: Yeah, I remember.
[1:09:36 – 1:09:37] Adam: We were talking about the weather.
[1:09:38 – 1:09:39] Adam: It’s been beautiful.
[1:09:39 – 1:09:40] Adam: This is just a dream ride.
[1:09:40 – 1:09:44] Adam: A lot of times this happens up here, and I feel like this happens more Novembers than not.
[1:09:45 – 1:09:47] Adam: You get like a week of just bliss.
[1:09:48 – 1:09:48] Adam: No wind.
[1:09:49 – 1:09:49] Adam: Nice sun.
[1:09:49 – 1:09:52] Adam: You know, it’s like it’s 50, but it still feels amazing.
[1:09:54 – 1:09:57] Adam: Anyways, Wednesday, though, looks like it’s going to rain a couple buckets worth of rain.
[1:09:57 – 1:10:01] Adam: And then switch over to sleet and, like, kind of snow.
[1:10:02 – 1:10:03] Adam: There’s a big system moving.
[1:10:03 – 1:10:05] Adam: It looks like it’s going to snow at some point here.
[1:10:06 – 1:10:12] Adam: I did, yesterday, before we checked out, change the oil on the John Deere 1032 snowblower.
[1:10:15 – 1:10:18] Adam: And I adjusted the tension on the auger drive belt.
[1:10:19 – 1:10:20] Adam: That thing’s ready to go.
[1:10:20 – 1:10:20] Adam: That’s a beast.
[1:10:20 – 1:10:21] Adam: I’m ready for the snow.
[1:10:23 – 1:10:24] Adam: We haven’t really seen much.
[1:10:24 – 1:10:29] Adam: I’ve seen it dusting so far, and it’s, what now, the 9th?
[1:10:31 – 1:10:32] Adam: I never know what day it is.
[1:10:32 – 1:10:36] Adam: It’s Monday, but it’s either the 8th or the 9th of November.
[1:10:36 – 1:10:37] Adam: Still haven’t really gotten any snow.
[1:10:37 – 1:10:42] Adam: I could have been out there in a t-shirt today.
[1:10:47 – 1:11:04] Adam: anyhow never a lot of fun to go from fishing to i’m going to work uh so i guess we’re gonna leave it at that i gotta get myself into work mode here disengage tumble home mode engage co-op mode
[1:11:05 – 1:11:06] Adam: All right.
[1:11:07 – 1:11:13] Adam: For Live in the Field, this has been Adam on Monday, day three of Whitefish Camp 2021.
[1:11:13 – 1:11:16] Adam: Definitely going to check back with you on Tuesday.
[1:11:16 – 1:11:23] Adam: And then I believe we’re getting together for another Tumble Home Cinema Classics on Tuesday night.
[1:11:23 – 1:11:28] Adam: So I’ll probably hand off the field mic at that point and call it good for our first ever Whitefish Camp.
[1:11:29 – 1:11:33] Adam: You guys enjoying this hot netting field audio?
[1:11:33 – 1:11:33] Adam: Yeah.
[1:11:34 – 1:11:37] Adam: I mean, I’ve only really brought the mic in the boat with us the one time.
[1:11:37 – 1:11:41] Adam: So, all right, I promise I’ll bring no more Pontiac Vibe tracks.
[1:11:42 – 1:11:50] Adam: We’re going to, going forward tomorrow, we will bring the field mic back out on the boat for the final day of Whitefish Camp 2021.
[1:11:52 – 1:11:53] Adam: Happy netting.
[1:12:23 – 1:12:24] Adam: Hello, tumble homies.
[1:12:26 – 1:12:30] Adam: Welcome to day four of Whitefish Camp.
[1:12:30 – 1:12:36] Adam: Coming to you live from the world famous Sodi Whitefish Camp here on Devil Track Lake.
[1:12:38 – 1:12:40] Adam: Congratulations!
[1:12:41 – 1:12:42] Adam: You made it to day four.
[1:12:45 – 1:12:55] Adam: Just finished up a short nine-hour shift at the co-op.
[1:12:56 – 1:13:07] Adam: And today’s unofficial beer sponsor of the week is a big old can of Foster’s, the green and gold can.
[1:13:10 – 1:13:20] Adam: Yeah, I got out of work reasonably early, though, and I made it up here to the lake, and I don’t think Josh is going to be here for a bit.
[1:13:21 – 1:13:26] Adam: We’re going to be pushing to the sunset today, day four here at the camp, Sodi Whitefish Camp.
[1:13:28 – 1:13:37] Adam: Coming up this week or next week on Tumwum Cinema Classics, of course, Escanaba in the Moonlight, the all-time classic, Jeff Daniels,
[1:13:39 – 1:13:44] Adam: The grandpa from Fargo wearing his pants all the way up to his nipples.
[1:13:45 – 1:13:48] Adam: A lot of good stuff in Escanaba and the Moonlight.
[1:13:49 – 1:13:52] Adam: Including one of my favorite phrases, holy wah.
[1:13:55 – 1:13:56] Adam: Turn this music down.
[1:13:56 – 1:13:56] Adam: Jesus.
[1:13:59 – 1:14:00] Adam: Just turn it off.
[1:14:01 – 1:14:02] Adam: I can’t hear nothing.
[1:14:02 – 1:14:04] Adam: I can’t hear myself think.
[1:14:08 – 1:14:09] Adam: Yeah, day four.
[1:14:09 – 1:14:15] Adam: So we’ve got ten whitefish on the board and one big old pike.
[1:14:15 – 1:14:16] Adam: What does today hold?
[1:14:17 – 1:14:19] Adam: This has been a long soak for the net.
[1:14:21 – 1:14:29] Adam: I’m going to bring the mic out with us for this poll because this net’s been in the water now for quite a while without being checked.
[1:14:29 – 1:14:32] Adam: We’re pushing the legal limits today on that one.
[1:14:32 – 1:14:36] Adam: But hopefully we’re going to see a couple big whitefish in there
[1:14:37 – 1:14:39] Adam: But, yeah, the nets.
[1:14:39 – 1:14:43] Adam: What do you need to go white fishing in the netting season?
[1:14:45 – 1:14:48] Adam: Let’s talk about the gear while we wait for the rest of the crew to arrive.
[1:14:50 – 1:14:56] Adam: You can call your friend Bezos on the old internet and order some stuff, but…
[1:14:56 – 1:14:59] Adam: There’s a place out of Duluth I found their website.
[1:14:59 – 1:15:02] Adam: I’m not going to give them a solid plug because I don’t remember the name.
[1:15:02 – 1:15:05] Adam: It was like Duluth Net Company or something ridiculous like that.
[1:15:05 – 1:15:07] Adam: It’s a beautiful name.
[1:15:07 – 1:15:08] Adam: They have the nicest nets, I think.
[1:15:09 – 1:15:21] Adam: That’s like $115 for the net, and then you’ve got to get a buoy or two plus your netting license and a couple big anchors.
[1:15:23 – 1:15:25] Adam: So just your net setup, I’d say $150.
[1:15:25 – 1:15:28] Adam: I don’t know if that includes free shipping or not.
[1:15:29 – 1:15:31] Adam: You have to ask Bezos on that one.
[1:15:33 – 1:15:34] Adam: So I think I’m going to get one.
[1:15:34 – 1:15:39] Adam: I’m going to ask around, though, because I bet I can find one used for a little bit cheaper and it’s all set up with the buoys and everything.
[1:15:40 – 1:15:42] Adam: So, yeah, we’re using a borrow net this year.
[1:15:43 – 1:15:47] Adam: Shout out to Corey at Skyport.
[1:15:48 – 1:15:50] Adam: I believe that’s whose net this is.
[1:15:50 – 1:15:52] Adam: If not, shout out to Corey anyways.
[1:15:52 – 1:15:53] Adam: He’s a cool dude.
[1:15:54 – 1:15:55] Adam: And he’s a pretty good fisherman.
[1:15:56 – 1:15:57] Adam: So this is a lucky net, I’ve been told.
[1:15:57 – 1:15:59] Adam: But I want my own, you know.
[1:15:59 – 1:16:00] Adam: I at least want to have two nets for next year.
[1:16:01 – 1:16:02] Adam: So that’s what you need net-wise.
[1:16:04 – 1:16:09] Adam: Either get one used for under 100, hopefully, or, you know, new one, 150.
[1:16:10 – 1:16:11] Adam: Set that thing up.
[1:16:11 – 1:16:12] Adam: You could do this in a canoe.
[1:16:13 – 1:16:18] Adam: So, you know, asking around, is anybody actually going into Brule for the Cisco netting, you know,
[1:16:20 – 1:16:29] Adam: And by going into caribou and putting some whitefish nets in the narrows there, camping out would be pretty neat.
[1:16:29 – 1:16:37] Adam: But, you know, you could definitely get everything you need into a canoe and, like, handle the net, both placement and, like, checking of the net, I would think.
[1:16:37 – 1:16:43] Adam: What we have found handy is having the secondary smaller normal fishing net, and you can kind of, like, scoop under them.
[1:16:44 – 1:16:52] Adam: And then at least with these, like, 17-inchers, 16-inchers we’ve mainly been getting here, you know, you can basically just kind of, like, squeeze them right through.
[1:16:52 – 1:16:55] Adam: It’s a two-and-a-half-inch, I believe, two-and-a-half-inch net.
[1:16:56 – 1:16:57] Adam: I have to fact-check that.
[1:17:00 – 1:17:04] Adam: Another big thing, which is I’m standing outside the vehicle right now.
[1:17:07 – 1:17:08] Adam: Weather check.
[1:17:09 – 1:17:11] Adam: Hold on, we’ve got to get the weather check in here.
[1:17:11 – 1:17:14] Adam: It was 47 degrees and clear skies.
[1:17:16 – 1:17:18] Adam: Looks like a mild west wind.
[1:17:19 – 1:17:21] Adam: That concludes your weather check.
[1:17:23 – 1:17:24] Adam: Time for a sip of Foster’s.
[1:17:29 – 1:17:29] Adam: Pretty good.
[1:17:30 – 1:17:36] Adam: I made a great autumnal harvest salad today at work.
[1:17:37 – 1:17:37] Adam: It’s marvelous.
[1:17:37 – 1:17:40] Adam: It’s one of the most co-op-y things I think I’ve ever made at the co-op.
[1:17:41 – 1:17:43] Adam: Shout out to Abby Zach for finding that recipe.
[1:17:44 – 1:17:45] Adam: It’s a good one.
[1:17:47 – 1:17:48] Adam: It’s got kale in it, for sure.
[1:17:50 – 1:17:51] Adam: And wheat berries.
[1:17:51 – 1:17:53] Adam: You’ve got to soak the wheat berries overnight.
[1:17:53 – 1:17:55] Adam: There’s your pro tip.
[1:17:55 – 1:17:59] Adam: Secondary, besides the net and the boat, having a little motorboat is nice.
[1:18:01 – 1:18:02] Adam: But you could definitely do it in a canoe.
[1:18:03 – 1:18:11] Adam: But secondary to all that, the number one thing I found is you don’t want to wear, you want to wear the grossest, nastiest clothes you have at your disposal.
[1:18:11 – 1:18:19] Adam: So I’ve been like going here and then going to work from here and then like today working all day and then coming out here right before sunset to check them.
[1:18:19 – 1:18:24] Adam: So I got like just, I’ve been keeping like a change of whitefish clothing outfit.
[1:18:24 – 1:18:27] Adam: I just have like a whitefish netting outfit now that I keep only in the car.
[1:18:28 – 1:18:30] Adam: You wouldn’t want to bring this in the house.
[1:18:30 – 1:18:44] Adam: If you’ve heard the previous audio, when you, like, give them the old, you know, goodnight sweet prince on the metal bench, you know, it does tend to, like, spray whitefish sauce everywhere in the boat.
[1:18:44 – 1:18:51] Adam: And so, yeah, I have, I’m going to, basically what I’m doing right now is getting myself changed.
[1:18:52 – 1:18:56] Adam: And then, you know, kind of untie the boat and get that down into the water.
[1:18:56 – 1:19:01] Adam: So that’s your general setup and what you would want if you were getting into whitefishing.
[1:19:02 – 1:19:06] Adam: We’ve been blessed with warm temperatures, too, for the first four days of whitefish camp.
[1:19:08 – 1:19:16] Adam: But, you know, I’ve seen guys, like, in these full, like, Alaskan crab fishermen rubber, you know, suits.
[1:19:18 – 1:19:21] Adam: You know, if it gets later in the season and you’re still in water,
[1:19:22 – 1:19:26] Adam: That’s the real trick when it’s, like, water temp at, like, 36.
[1:19:26 – 1:19:28] Adam: Everything’s cold and windy and you’re in a boat.
[1:19:28 – 1:19:31] Adam: Like, I’ve heard that’s really tough on the hands, and I ice fish a lot.
[1:19:31 – 1:19:37] Adam: And even people that ice fish say, like, no, it’s not the same as, like, checking nets right before the first ice.
[1:19:38 – 1:19:51] Adam: So I would like to think we’re going to keep trying because Josh has assured me that, like, last year when he was helping tend a net with a guy, that they, like, the right before ice up, like, the colder the water the temps were, the bigger the whitefish were getting.
[1:19:52 – 1:20:02] Adam: So, I mean, I’ve alluded to this earlier in this episode, but, you know, we’ve been blessed with really nice weather, but it looks like it’s going to turn kind of nasty starting tomorrow night.
[1:20:03 – 1:20:14] Adam: So we might have, like, one more good day here of, like, primo weather, and then it’s going to go back to, like, what it should be for early November, starting, like, kind of tomorrow afternoon, it looks like.
[1:20:16 – 1:20:18] Adam: And there’s a good chance of snow, like, Friday, so…
[1:20:18 – 1:20:21] Adam: But that, you know, maybe that’ll bring in some bigger whitefish.
[1:20:21 – 1:20:23] Adam: I mean, the size we’re getting is fine with me.
[1:20:23 – 1:20:25] Adam: We’re getting some really nice fillets off these things.
[1:20:26 – 1:20:33] Adam: But, you know, it’d be kind of fun to get into some of those real, like, jagundo whitefish.
[1:20:33 – 1:20:34] Adam: Probably the biggest one we’ve had so far.
[1:20:34 – 1:20:40] Adam: I think the last one we pulled yesterday morning that was in the shallows, that one was pretty good size.
[1:20:41 – 1:20:43] Adam: Maybe pushed a 20-incher on that one.
[1:20:44 – 1:20:45] Adam: And I don’t think I’ve mentioned either.
[1:20:46 – 1:20:48] Adam: The one of them I’ve cleaned so far definitely had eggs.
[1:20:49 – 1:20:51] Adam: But the rest of them have all been males, it looks like.
[1:20:51 – 1:20:53] Adam: So that was the other thing.
[1:20:53 – 1:20:57] Adam: Later you may get more big ones with the eggs coming in, the ladies.
[1:20:59 – 1:21:05] Adam: Right now it’s just a bunch of dumb teen boy whitefish in here getting trapped in the nets.
[1:21:07 – 1:21:12] Adam: I would like to hopefully get a couple more out here this evening.
[1:21:13 – 1:21:15] Adam: I’m guessing Josh will try and talk me into leaving the net in.
[1:21:16 – 1:21:19] Adam: I could probably make it work tomorrow morning to check it.
[1:21:20 – 1:21:23] Adam: But then, yeah, like Thursday and Friday looked real nasty.
[1:21:23 – 1:21:26] Adam: But this is the way of the whitefish netting.
[1:21:26 – 1:21:28] Adam: You know, you got to stick with it and be tough.
[1:21:29 – 1:21:35] Adam: You know, it’s not going to be all 50-degree calm, dead calm reflections in the beginning of November.
[1:21:35 – 1:21:37] Adam: You know, we’ve lucked out already, as is.
[1:21:37 – 1:21:42] Adam: I’m just happy we’re getting something.
[1:21:42 – 1:21:48] Adam: So, I don’t know if you guys can tell, but I’m, like, working this entire episode basically off with no notes.
[1:21:49 – 1:21:52] Adam: I’m just kind of riffing here, trying to give you the general lay of the land.
[1:21:52 – 1:21:57] Adam: One more thing, I guess, before I stop this track and get into my outfit.
[1:22:05 – 1:22:08] Adam: What do the whitefish look like?
[1:22:08 – 1:22:10] Adam: We did mention their eyes are quite stunning.
[1:22:11 – 1:22:13] Adam: I got some nice pictures of close-ups of their eyes.
[1:22:14 – 1:22:15] Adam: Fish eyes.
[1:22:16 – 1:22:18] Adam: Have you ever really looked into a fish’s eye?
[1:22:18 – 1:22:19] Adam: They’re very strange.
[1:22:21 – 1:22:23] Adam: Whitefish have real big eyes for the size of their heads.
[1:22:25 – 1:22:29] Adam: I’m going to go ahead and guess that they have pretty good eyesight.
[1:22:30 – 1:22:35] Adam: And Devil Trek Lake is not, like, super clear water, but when you’re pulling those up, you can see them from quite a ways.
[1:22:35 – 1:22:36] Adam: I mean, it’s pretty clear water.
[1:22:38 – 1:22:39] Adam: All things considered.
[1:22:39 – 1:22:45] Adam: But yeah, they do have a beautiful reddish streak on their tail.
[1:22:46 – 1:22:49] Adam: Like the lower part of their flappy tail.
[1:22:50 – 1:22:51] Adam: Which is pretty nice.
[1:22:51 – 1:22:53] Adam: And then yeah, they’re just these big scales.
[1:22:54 – 1:23:00] Adam: And they change color on you based on the angle of the sun and your state of mind.
[1:23:01 – 1:23:09] Adam: So they’re kind of like they can be any color there almost look like a hologram fish if that makes any sense but
[1:23:10 – 1:23:15] Adam: Yeah, they’re a very interesting, like, kind of prehistoric-looking fish, and they’re delicious.
[1:23:16 – 1:23:23] Adam: So I don’t know if I’m doing a good job of selling whitefish netting as a fun thing to do, but I’m having a great time with it.
[1:23:24 – 1:23:26] Adam: Been a lot of fun getting into this.
[1:23:27 – 1:23:39] Adam: I’m already looking forward to next year and, like, having my own setup and, you know, just, like, getting a year into it and, like, maybe starting to figure some things out.
[1:23:39 – 1:24:02] Adam: one more addendum uh you’re not using any bait obviously it’s just a net it’s very ancient way of fishing i guess it’s a little strange to me it kind of feels like cheating but uh you know it’s uh it’s the olden ways i think you know it’s a it’s a fun way to fish and i’m really glad we got into it
[1:24:03 – 1:24:15] Adam: Uh, no bait though, but like when we were setting the net out the first day, like a piece of birch bark had become like stuck in the net and it kind of hung in there for like a good first whole day and a half, at least it was stuck in the net and then it got away on us.
[1:24:16 – 1:24:23] Adam: But I was kind of joking that that was our bait, but, uh, you know, they come in to investigate like what the, what the heck is this?
[1:24:25 – 1:24:28] Adam: Oh, it looks like a real tasty piece of birch bark there, Dodd.
[1:24:29 – 1:24:30] Adam: Yeah, go on and get it.
[1:24:30 – 1:24:31] Adam: Oh, I’m stuck.
[1:24:31 – 1:24:36] Adam: Oh, I’m bamboozled by them boat humans.
[1:24:37 – 1:24:38] Adam: Oh, the boat humans dub.
[1:24:40 – 1:24:41] Adam: All right, well, I got to get dressed.
[1:24:42 – 1:24:45] Adam: Josh should be here, I’d guess, in five minutes.
[1:24:46 – 1:24:51] Adam: And I think we might have a special guest for day four here at Whitefish Camp.
[1:24:52 – 1:24:52] Adam: We shall see.
[1:24:52 – 1:24:55] Adam: There’s room for at least one more person in the boat, so…
[1:24:57 – 1:25:03] Adam: Got all the stuff, too, and if there’s enough daylight, we might hang out after for a little bit.
[1:25:04 – 1:25:05] Adam: It’s a pretty nice night.
[1:25:06 – 1:25:09] Adam: We’ll do some audio in the boat coming up next, I think.
[1:25:11 – 1:25:14] Adam: Yeah, day four here at Whitey Camp.
[1:25:14 – 1:25:15] Adam: Whitefish Camp?
[1:25:16 – 1:25:17] Adam: None of these have a great ring to it.
[1:25:19 – 1:25:23] Adam: All right, as we always say here on Tumulum, happy netting.
[1:25:47 – 1:25:47] Adam: Oh, there’s the sun.
[1:25:49 – 1:25:50] Adam: I should have brought the sunglasses.
[1:25:50 – 1:25:52] SPEAKER_02: Wow, that’s awesome.
[1:25:53 – 1:25:57] Adam: It’s a beautiful night here on world-famous Devil’s Track Lake.
[1:26:01 – 1:26:01] Adam: Adrian is here.
[1:26:02 – 1:26:03] Adam: Hello, Adrian.
[1:26:03 – 1:26:05] SPEAKER_02: Howdy.
[1:26:05 – 1:26:07] Adam: You ever been whitefish netting before?
[1:26:07 – 1:26:08] SPEAKER_02: I have not.
[1:26:08 – 1:26:08] SPEAKER_02: First time.
[1:26:12 – 1:26:13] Adam: So we got a crew of three tonight.
[1:26:17 – 1:26:17] Adam: Maybe I should move back.
[1:26:18 – 1:26:20] Adam: I’m sitting up in the nose of the boat.
[1:26:22 – 1:26:24] Adam: It’s a short ride over the net, though.
[1:26:24 – 1:26:26] Adam: We’re just gonna stay live, I think, here.
[1:26:44 – 1:26:46] Adam: As always, we’re starting on the deep end.
[1:26:47 – 1:26:49] Adam: Going for the buoy out in six feet.
[1:27:08 – 1:27:10] Adam: Coming in hot, I’m not grabbing that.
[1:27:11 – 1:27:12] Adam: Coming in a little hot.
[1:27:12 – 1:27:16] Adam: Josh has got us positioned perfectly here on the buoy.
[1:27:26 – 1:27:27] Adam: This craft’s unwieldy.
[1:27:29 – 1:27:34] SPEAKER_02: It’s unruly.
[1:27:38 – 1:27:38] Adam: Oh, man.
[1:27:38 – 1:27:40] Adam: Nah, we’re good, we’re good.
[1:27:46 – 1:27:46] Adam: Draw!
[1:27:48 – 1:27:48] Adam: I got her.
[1:27:49 – 1:27:52] Adam: Yeah, the paddling skills came in handy tonight.
[1:27:55 – 1:27:56] Adam: Got it, we got it.
[1:27:57 – 1:27:58] Adam: Buoy in hand.
[1:27:58 – 1:27:58] Adam: Buoy in hand!
[1:28:00 – 1:28:06] Adam: All right.
[1:28:06 – 1:28:07] Adam: We got the net line.
[1:28:08 – 1:28:09] Adam: We’re making our way down the net.
[1:28:09 – 1:28:11] SPEAKER_02: So it goes all the way over to the other boot?
[1:28:11 – 1:28:12] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[1:28:17 – 1:28:18] Adam: Oh, I feel one.
[1:28:18 – 1:28:21] Adam: I feel something.
[1:28:25 – 1:28:28] Adam: Like a good hole there, huh?
[1:28:29 – 1:28:30] Adam: There wasn’t something back there, was there?
[1:28:36 – 1:28:47] Adam: This is a little darker than I’m used to for daylight.
[1:28:48 – 1:28:48] Erik: Yeah.
[1:29:10 – 1:29:12] Adam: Yeah, so that bottom rope is like lead core.
[1:29:13 – 1:29:14] Adam: Keeps it down.
[1:29:14 – 1:29:16] SPEAKER_02: That’s weird.
[1:29:16 – 1:29:18] Adam: I swear I felt like a wiggle right away.
[1:29:20 – 1:29:23] Adam: Oh yeah, we got one here.
[1:29:24 – 1:29:25] Adam: That’s a good looking one.
[1:29:26 – 1:29:31] Adam: Alright Adrian, you want to get that net and just wear one of them on that side.
[1:29:31 – 1:29:33] Adam: There we go.
[1:29:33 – 1:29:36] Adam: Alright, just keep the net under him.
[1:29:37 – 1:29:38] Adam: You can bring it up.
[1:29:39 – 1:29:42] Adam: We can actually, yeah, we can bring him like right up like that.
[1:29:43 – 1:29:43] Adam: There we go.
[1:29:44 – 1:29:45] Adam: So it’s a nice looking one.
[1:29:45 – 1:29:46] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:29:46 – 1:29:47] Adam: Is he going to go that way or this way?
[1:29:48 – 1:29:52] Adam: He’s kind of like an, geez, he’s, yeah.
[1:29:54 – 1:29:55] Adam: So that’s a good one.
[1:29:55 – 1:29:58] Adam: Oh, it’s a beast.
[1:29:58 – 1:30:01] Adam: Oh, Josh, I’m going to have to try and like work this one backwards.
[1:30:01 – 1:30:01] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:30:02 – 1:30:03] Adam: God is like old tails in there.
[1:30:06 – 1:30:10] Adam: This one’s, this is the most stuck whitefish of the season so far.
[1:30:11 – 1:30:11] Adam: I’m gonna declare it.
[1:30:12 – 1:30:14] Adam: This one’s got the most net.
[1:30:15 – 1:30:16] Adam: Geez, he’s really in there.
[1:30:20 – 1:30:22] Adam: Yeah, I think I can get him through there.
[1:30:22 – 1:30:25] Adam: Look at them layered lips.
[1:30:27 – 1:30:30] SPEAKER_02: Well, I think we can, yeah, I think he’s gonna go.
[1:30:34 – 1:30:35] Adam: Boy, oh boy.
[1:30:39 – 1:30:40] Adam: Josh, this one’s pretty big.
[1:30:40 – 1:30:42] Adam: I think this one’s going to have to, like, get backed out.
[1:30:43 – 1:30:45] Adam: Yeah, those scales are huge.
[1:30:45 – 1:30:45] Adam: Wow.
[1:30:47 – 1:30:50] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that, usually with the bigger ones, you do got to kind of…
[1:30:51 – 1:30:51] Adam: Boy.
[1:30:51 – 1:30:53] Adam: I don’t know.
[1:30:53 – 1:30:55] Adam: He’s, like, so… Wow.
[1:30:56 – 1:30:56] Adam: Yeah.
[1:30:57 – 1:30:58] Adam: Hmm.
[1:30:58 – 1:30:58] SPEAKER_02: Is that all right?
[1:31:00 – 1:31:00] Adam: No.
[1:31:00 – 1:31:01] Adam: Better keep it up.
[1:31:01 – 1:31:03] Adam: I feel better having it under.
[1:31:03 – 1:31:05] Adam: I don’t even know what to… That helps.
[1:31:06 – 1:31:07] Adam: Yeah, there we go.
[1:31:08 – 1:31:09] Adam: That’s what Trang is.
[1:31:11 – 1:31:11] Adam: Boy, he’s like…
[1:31:12 – 1:31:13] Adam: I’ve never seen one so stuck.
[1:31:15 – 1:31:17] Adam: This is the…
[1:31:17 – 1:31:17] Adam: Sorry.
[1:31:19 – 1:31:21] Adam: He’s still very feisty and lively.
[1:31:21 – 1:31:23] Adam: Okay, okay.
[1:31:24 – 1:31:25] Adam: This is looking better.
[1:31:27 – 1:31:28] Adam: He’s a beast.
[1:31:30 – 1:31:30] Adam: Or she’s a beast.
[1:31:31 – 1:31:35] Adam: Okay, well… Get that out of there, bud.
[1:31:39 – 1:31:41] Adam: No, I think I want him on that side.
[1:31:46 – 1:31:48] SPEAKER_02: What is going on right now?
[1:31:49 – 1:31:51] Adam: Okay, no, I think this is good here, yeah.
[1:31:52 – 1:31:54] Adam: I just want to get him loose.
[1:31:55 – 1:31:56] Adam: I can see where your hands could get cold doing this.
[1:31:58 – 1:31:59] Adam: Oh my God, dude.
[1:32:00 – 1:32:04] SPEAKER_02: Seriously, it’s like inside the net.
[1:32:08 – 1:32:08] Adam: Josh, help.
[1:32:09 – 1:32:10] Adam: What are you doing?
[1:32:10 – 1:32:11] SPEAKER_02: Hold on.
[1:32:11 – 1:32:14] Adam: Yeah, here.
[1:32:16 – 1:32:19] Adam: This is a real conundrum here, Josh.
[1:32:21 – 1:32:22] Adam: Oh, dear.
[1:32:29 – 1:32:30] SPEAKER_02: Back its head out.
[1:32:32 – 1:32:33] SPEAKER_02: Clear the fins.
[1:32:36 – 1:32:37] Adam: He’s not having a good time right now.
[1:32:46 – 1:32:47] Adam: Yikes.
[1:32:47 – 1:32:48] Adam: Okay, wait.
[1:32:48 – 1:32:50] Adam: I think he’s gone.
[1:32:54 – 1:32:57] Adam: Like, I just don’t even understand how he got into this position.
[1:32:57 – 1:33:05] SPEAKER_02: This thing is insane.
[1:33:05 – 1:33:10] Adam: Yeah, I don’t think that’s going to be a real issue if he gets his head loose.
[1:33:10 – 1:33:14] Adam: Oh, this one’s nasty, Josh.
[1:33:16 – 1:33:17] SPEAKER_02: Doing all the hard work.
[1:33:18 – 1:33:23] Adam: Get this little paw out of there.
[1:33:26 – 1:33:34] Adam: This guy, he wins the award for… How did you pull this off, sir?
[1:33:35 – 1:33:35] Adam: Okay.
[1:33:37 – 1:33:38] Adam: Okay, a major breakthrough.
[1:33:38 – 1:33:42] Adam: Okay.
[1:33:42 – 1:33:42] Adam: Jeez.
[1:33:44 – 1:33:44] Adam: Jeez.
[1:33:45 – 1:33:47] SPEAKER_02: We have an opening right here.
[1:33:47 – 1:33:57] Adam: Oh, there we go.
[1:33:59 – 1:34:01] Adam: Jesus Christ.
[1:34:01 – 1:34:02] UNKNOWN: Sorry.
[1:34:02 – 1:34:03] Adam: No, we’re good.
[1:34:04 – 1:34:09] Adam: Okay.
[1:34:09 – 1:34:14] SPEAKER_02: Where is the opening?
[1:34:14 – 1:34:14] SPEAKER_02: Here we go.
[1:34:15 – 1:34:15] SPEAKER_02: Found it?
[1:34:16 – 1:34:17] Adam: Yeah, but I just hooked him.
[1:34:18 – 1:34:19] Adam: I thought I had a good window here.
[1:34:21 – 1:34:25] SPEAKER_02: There’s kind of a white spot in that there, but it’s not the actual…
[1:34:25 – 1:34:26] Adam: He’s ready!
[1:34:28 – 1:34:29] Adam: Come here, you little son of a bitch.
[1:34:31 – 1:34:31] Adam: It’s a beast!
[1:34:32 – 1:34:32] Adam: Oh, God.
[1:34:35 – 1:34:35] Adam: Good night, sweet prince.
[1:34:38 – 1:34:39] Adam: I don’t think that was adequate.
[1:34:39 – 1:34:40] Adam: He’s too big.
[1:34:45 – 1:34:45] Adam: Good night.
[1:34:47 – 1:34:47] Adam: Okay.
[1:34:47 – 1:34:51] Adam: Well, uh, how entangled is this net in this thing now?
[1:34:55 – 1:34:58] Adam: That is okay.
[1:34:59 – 1:35:00] Adam: Holy shit.
[1:35:07 – 1:35:10] Adam: I don’t need a minute.
[1:35:11 – 1:35:11] Adam: We made it.
[1:35:11 – 1:35:12] Adam: All right.
[1:35:12 – 1:35:13] Adam: Okay.
[1:35:14 – 1:35:14] Adam: Can I see the bucket?
[1:35:16 – 1:35:19] Adam: That’s the biggest one yet, I think.
[1:35:19 – 1:35:21] Adam: That’s what happens when they’re big.
[1:35:22 – 1:35:23] Adam: That’s the price you gotta pay.
[1:35:24 – 1:35:25] Adam: All right, we’re a little more than halfway.
[1:35:25 – 1:35:27] Adam: Is this thing still rolling?
[1:35:28 – 1:35:29] Adam: This is exciting content.
[1:35:31 – 1:35:32] Adam: We’re a little more than halfway down the net.
[1:35:34 – 1:35:37] Adam: I’ve collected myself and I continue on down the net.
[1:36:22 – 1:36:25] Adam: Wow, that’s it, huh?
[1:36:26 – 1:36:26] Adam: That was too nice.
[1:36:26 – 1:36:29] SPEAKER_02: That’s a good sign.
[1:36:44 – 1:36:45] Adam: Let’s see.
[1:36:45 – 1:36:47] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is.
[1:36:47 – 1:36:52] Adam: Yeah, I think we should.
[1:36:52 – 1:36:53] Adam: All right, so hold on.
[1:36:53 – 1:36:54] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so
[1:37:14 – 1:37:16] Adam: Yeah, I think we should stretch it out a little.
[1:37:18 – 1:37:21] Adam: Okay, so one, but it’s a big one.
[1:37:21 – 1:37:23] Adam: And boy, you could hear the struggle.
[1:37:23 – 1:37:25] Adam: That thing was really, I’ve never seen a fish so tangled in a net.
[1:37:26 – 1:37:27] Adam: You ever see anything like this?
[1:37:28 – 1:37:28] SPEAKER_02: Never.
[1:37:29 – 1:37:29] SPEAKER_02: It was incredible.
[1:37:31 – 1:37:33] Adam: So what we’re doing now is…
[1:37:35 – 1:37:45] Adam: Because the net, you know, when you’re pulling on it, as you pull yourself and the boat down it, and the wind just works on them all day, it kind of like will take the stretch out of the net and kind of turn it into a big arc.
[1:37:46 – 1:37:51] Adam: So we’re going to pick up this far anchor in here and then run it into shore just a bit.
[1:37:51 – 1:37:52] Adam: All right, you good?
[1:37:53 – 1:37:54] Adam: Anchor up.
[1:37:54 – 1:37:58] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sure.
[1:38:01 – 1:38:02] Adam: The net’s right there.
[1:38:02 – 1:38:11] Adam: Yeah, you can hang on to that and kind of pull it until it’s tight, and then we’ll… All right.
[1:38:13 – 1:38:14] Adam: You want that one go?
[1:38:22 – 1:38:24] Adam: You like trolling?
[1:38:26 – 1:38:27] SPEAKER_02: Just start trolling the link.
[1:38:27 – 1:38:29] Adam: That ain’t legal.
[1:38:29 – 1:38:30] Adam: Two boats.
[1:38:34 – 1:38:35] Adam: They’re moving, right?
[1:38:36 – 1:38:38] Adam: All right, well, he’s not kill it.
[1:38:38 – 1:38:39] Adam: I’ll just drop it.
[1:38:39 – 1:38:41] Adam: I guess we’re I think we’re just pulling that one.
[1:38:41 – 1:38:51] Adam: So All right there reallocated our position These want to make sure the little end buoy is kind of clear.
[1:38:51 – 1:38:52] Adam: That looks good.
[1:38:53 – 1:38:57] Adam: All right, so One but it was a segundo
[1:38:59 – 1:39:18] Adam: and uh my hands are a little cold but they’re not that cold but we gotta we gotta go get a beer i think all right that’s the whitefish camp day four report coming to you live from devil’s track lake my name has been adam and i’m joined here in the boat adrian and josh hello
[1:40:16 – 1:40:17] Adam: Hello, tumble homies.
[1:40:17 – 1:40:23] Adam: This is Whitefish Camp coming to you live from the Saudi Whitefish Camp on the north shore of Devil’s Track Lake.
[1:40:44 – 1:40:51] Adam: Afraid of the empty, but too safe on the shore.
[1:40:54 – 1:40:56] Adam: This is the end of day four at Whitefish Camp.
[1:40:57 – 1:40:58] Adam: Sorry for the serenades.
[1:40:59 – 1:41:00] Adam: Serenades.
[1:41:02 – 1:41:03] Adam: One jagundo.
[1:41:04 – 1:41:07] Adam: The big jagundo of the season is on the board.
[1:41:10 – 1:41:19] Adam: I don’t know how much of the struggle will be used on the final audio, but we captured it all in its entirety with the field audio mic.
[1:41:20 – 1:41:24] Adam: The toughest untangle of my adult life.
[1:41:24 – 1:41:26] Adam: We got that Jagundo in the bucket, though.
[1:41:28 – 1:41:30] Adam: And it’s cleaned up and is riding home with me right now.
[1:41:30 – 1:41:32] Adam: And destined for the pickling jar.
[1:41:35 – 1:41:40] Adam: Going to have a nice batch of pickled whitefish after these last couple days.
[1:41:40 – 1:41:43] Adam: That puts us up to 11 whitefish through four days.
[1:41:45 – 1:41:54] Adam: Pretty good start to the season, but what at first I think began as like, maybe we’ll put a net out for a weekend.
[1:41:57 – 1:42:00] Adam: You know, maybe we’ll just put it out for a couple days and see what happens.
[1:42:01 – 1:42:02] Adam: Borrow a net and all.
[1:42:04 – 1:42:06] Adam: But a funny thing happened.
[1:42:08 – 1:42:10] Adam: Eric, install aft track here.
[1:42:12 – 1:42:13] Adam: Funny thing happened.
[1:42:13 – 1:42:17] Adam: I love whitefish netting and I can’t get enough.
[1:42:18 – 1:42:20] Adam: And it’s still pretty nice weather out here.
[1:42:21 – 1:42:26] Adam: I think it’s going to rain tomorrow, but I think the plan is to recheck these things in the morning.
[1:42:28 – 1:42:55] Adam: maybe recheck the water temperature in the morning but uh don’t worry don’t worry anybody listening this far into the episodes like no more no more netting audio please don’t worry uh my the producer needs the field audio mic and uh this is where this track is where we’re going to leave you and whitefish netting for the for this season at least you know who’s to say maybe we’ll end up cisco netting before the end of november you never know
[1:42:56 – 1:43:01] Adam: Unlikely, but you never know.
[1:43:01 – 1:43:14] Adam: I’m heading back towards the shed right now and we’re going to talk about Escanaba in the moonlight and probably record the front end of this episode.
[1:43:14 – 1:43:14] Adam: Whoa!
[1:43:16 – 1:43:17] Adam: We’re messing with the timelines.
[1:43:17 – 1:43:27] Adam: We’re probably going to record the front end of this episode, the intro, and then, you know, let the producer do his magic and ship it, you know.
[1:43:29 – 1:43:34] Adam: I can’t keep bringing you along out to the net every day, you know.
[1:43:35 – 1:43:37] Adam: I mean, how much could we really learn together?
[1:43:39 – 1:43:48] Adam: But I am excited to see what I can learn with the remaining days of whitefish netting season this year.
[1:43:48 – 1:43:52] Adam: What can we figure out and then add to our arsenal for next year’s camp?
[1:43:52 – 1:43:54] Adam: I’m already excited for next year, for sure.
[1:43:55 – 1:44:01] Adam: But thank you for anybody out there who actually listened through to the end of this.
[1:44:02 – 1:44:11] Adam: There’s probably a lot of long sections of just like fish stuck in net and motor running gently.
[1:44:14 – 1:44:18] Adam: It’s probably not terribly exciting audio, but I had a lot of fun recording it.
[1:44:19 – 1:44:24] Adam: And I hope you can sense the fun and maybe also had some fun listening to it.
[1:44:24 – 1:44:29] Adam: So anyways, thanks to anybody who actually listened to this episode all the way to the end.
[1:44:30 – 1:44:36] Adam: I like to say that we have some special edition Whitefish chiptunes or something, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.
[1:44:37 – 1:44:41] Adam: We’ll see what happens, but even I don’t know what’s going to happen next.
[1:44:41 – 1:44:42] Adam: That’s the beauty of it all.
[1:44:43 – 1:44:43] Adam: We record it.
[1:44:45 – 1:44:46] Adam: That’s how we’ve always done it.
[1:44:48 – 1:44:51] Adam: You know, this is just the beginning of Whitefish Camp, though.
[1:44:52 – 1:44:53] Adam: I want to make that clear.
[1:44:53 – 1:45:00] Adam: What I originally thought was going to be a weekend project has turned into a new favorite hobby for sure.
[1:45:00 – 1:45:06] Adam: I recommend anybody with the resources or the opportunity to try this, get out and try it.
[1:45:06 – 1:45:11] Adam: It’s a lot of fun, you know, and I’ve had some pretty amicable… That’s not right.
[1:45:12 – 1:45:13] Adam: Pretty good weather.
[1:45:13 – 1:45:14] Adam: Amicable?
[1:45:14 – 1:45:14] Adam: Amicable?
[1:45:16 – 1:45:18] Adam: The weather’s been pretty dang decent.
[1:45:18 – 1:45:21] Adam: I do apologize for the cursing in this episode.
[1:45:22 – 1:45:23] Adam: It couldn’t be helped.
[1:45:24 – 1:45:26] Adam: Pretty exciting stuff out there.
[1:45:26 – 1:45:31] Adam: But, yeah, anyways, thanks again for listening.
[1:45:32 – 1:45:35] Adam: If you’ve got a net or you can borrow a net or whatever, get after them.
[1:45:35 – 1:45:36] Adam: It’s a lot of fun.
[1:45:37 – 1:45:40] Adam: Fun way to spend some time in the boat at the end of the season.
[1:45:42 – 1:45:43] Adam: Pretty much everything else is closed, I think.
[1:45:44 – 1:45:48] Adam: Maybe it could be like fishing a big bobber with a sucker for northern or something.
[1:45:50 – 1:45:52] Adam: That’s probably not a bad idea, actually.
[1:45:52 – 1:45:53] Adam: All right.
[1:45:54 – 1:45:55] Adam: Anyways, thank you.
[1:45:55 – 1:45:59] Adam: And as we always say on Tumble Home, life is precious.
[1:46:00 – 1:46:01] Adam: Every day is a miracle.
[1:46:02 – 1:46:04] Adam: Happy netting.
[1:46:15 – 1:46:15] UNKNOWN: Thank you.
